World No. 2 Anett Kontaveit has accepted a main draw wildcard into Hamburg, the tournament announced on Friday. Kontaveit, 26, is set to make her debut on the clay courts of Hamburg.

Kontaveit hasn’t really played much tennis over the last three months and it a positive sign to see her accepting a wildcard into Hamburg.

Kontaveit, who contracted COVID-19 in early spring, has played just four tournaments since April. After finishing her clay season with three consecutive losses, Kontaveit ended her losing streak at Wimbledon after beating Bernarda Pera in the first round.

Kontaveit maybe managed to get through her Wimbledon opener but then suffered a surprise loss to Jule Niemeier in the second round.

Kontaveit on battling the after effects of COVID-19

Battling the after effects of COVID-19 was the reason why Kontaveit was forced to miss a good portion of the clay season and why she was limited to only one tournament during the grass season.

“Well, I had it two months ago, I think, or something like that. Then I tried to come back very quickly. I started training. It was low intensity, but I was still training every day. I think that was what I did wrong. Just thinking back at it, I probably should have given myself more time to recover,” Kontaveit said.

“Then I tried to play Rome. I mean, it was very difficult physically. I remember it was very, very tough. Also, at the French Open, I really struggled. I had like really big energy dips, and I was tired all the time. It was tough to wake up.

I slept a lot all the time. Then after the French Open, I tried to start training more, and it just got worse. I started feeling more and more tired. Then I decided to take a complete break for a couple of weeks, I think, and I felt like my energy was starting to come back.” It remains to be seen how will Kontaveit play in her Hamburg debut next week.
