Former world No. 1 Serena Williams has signed up to play the National Bank Open in Toronto, the tournament announced on Friday. Williams, 40, is set to play at the National Bank Open for the first time since 2019.

Last year, the National Bank Open was held in Montreal.

This year, it’s Toronto’s turn to host the National Bank Open. In Toronto, Williams is a four-time finalist and a three-time champion. In her last National Bank Open appearance – which came in 2019 – Williams reached the final before she was forced to retire to Bianca Andreescu.

Williams appears to be set to play the US Open

After being sidelined for 12 months, Williams returned to action at Wimbledon. Williams lost to Harmony Tan in the first round and afterward confirmed she’d like to compete at the US Open.

“When you’re at home, especially in New York, and the US Open, that being the first place I’ve won a Grand Slam, is something that’s always super special,” Williams said. “Your first time is always special.

There’s definitely lots of motivation to get better and to play at home.” In her first singles match in 12 months, Williams competed hard but in the end fell just short as Tan upset the American 7-5 1-6 7-6 (7).

“It definitely makes me want to hit the practice courts because you’re playing not bad and you’re so close,” Williams told reporters after the match. “Any other opponent probably would have suited my game better.

So, yeah, I feel like that it’s actually kind of like, ‘OK, Serena, you can do this if you want.’ ” The National Bank Open in Toronto is scheduled to kick off on August 8. It remains to be seen how far can Williams go in Toronto this year.
