Liverpool transfer round-up: Marco Asensio price tag set while Jurgen Klopp ‘turned down’ trio

Liverpool are one of a number of clubs who returned to pre-season training this week as they get preparations underway for the upcoming 2022/23 Premier League campaign, but there remain questions over whether or not any more new additions will join the current crop of players.

Amid all the gossip, Real Madrid have set their asking price for Marco Asensio this summer, with the Reds now knowing how much they would need to pay for his services after being linked with him since the end of the season. Elsewhere, it has been revealed which three midfielders Jurgen Klopp passed up the opportunity of signing.

Mirror Football takes a look at all the latest transfer stories coming out of Anfield…

Asensio price tag set

Supposed Liverpool target Marco Asensio has had his price tag revealed by Real Madrid as the Spaniard looks for a potential move away from the Santiago Bernabeu this summer, with the La Liga champions willing to cash in on him before his contract runs out next year.

And according to Tuttomercatoweb, Los Blancos have set a price tag range of a very specific £21.6m to £25.8m for the winger, which is a very reasonable deal for a player of his quality, while Asensio is also willing to take a pay cut in order to join a ‘convincing project’.

Asensio is said to be after more regular game time after falling down the pecking order in the Spanish capital, but with Liverpool’s forward options already at their disposal, it would be up to him to decide should the Reds come in with an offer.

Klopp ‘turned down’ midfield trio

With Liverpool said to be happy with their midfield options for another year and postpone signing anyone else until the summer of 2023, the chances of a new arrival for that area of the pitch are remarkably slim but there have been plenty of opportunities to add to their ranks, according to reports.

SportBible, as per National News Sport, have revealed that Jurgen Klopp ‘turned down the chance’ to sign Kalvin Phillips this summer, before he joined Manchester City, while the German also passed up the opportunity to sign both Yves Bissouma from Brighton and Leicester’s Youri Tielemans.

Bissouma has since moved onto Tottenham Hotspur, while Tielemans is increasingly likely to join Arsenal. It has also been noted that this was prior to Mohamed Salah signing a new contract at Anfield, which suggests the budget was being saved for his contract demands.

Bournemouth ‘open talks’ for Phillips return

Liverpool defender Nat Phillips will be fondly remembered for his role in Liverpool’s 2020-21 campaign in which he appeared out of nowhere to become a focal point in his side’s defence, following injuries to a number of those above him in the pecking order.

But following the returns of Virgil Van Dijk and Joel Matip, along with the signing of Ibrahima Konate, Phillips found himself short of game time last season and was allowed to join Bournemouth on loan for the remainder of the campaign in the January transfer window.

Now, the Dorset Daily Echo (via Football Insider) have said that the Cherries are exploring the possibility of re-signing Phillips for the upcoming season, upon their return to the top flight. The 25-year-old made 17 Championship appearances last term, helping them to gain promotion back to the Premier League.
