Carlos Alcaraz gives verdict on his grass potential

Carlos Alcaraz, 19, failed to lift his maiden Grand Slam title at Wimbledon but says he is confident now he can become a great grass player in the future. On Sunday, Alcaraz exited Wimbledon in the last-16 after Jannik Sinner handed him a 6-1 6-4 6-7 (8) 6-3 loss.

Alcaraz played only two exhibition matches on grass leading up to Wimbledon, and when he arrived to The Championships, he didn’t want to put too many pressure on himself as he said there were many other players with more experience on grass.

“I felt really good here at Wimbledon playing on grass,” Alcaraz told reporters, per Tennishead. “I got a lot of experience playing on grass. Now I’m thinking that I could be a great player on grass.

“Next year I hope to play some tournaments before Wimbledon to adapt my game to get more used to playing here. But I would say I’m going to be a great player here on grass. I hope to play more tournaments. I hope to play more matches on grass before Wimbledon next year to prepare well this Grand Slam, this beautiful Grand Slam.

Even if I didn’t play this year a tournament before, I felt really well. I felt that I had chances to do well here in Wimbledon.”

Alcaraz: I cannot allow slow starts

In the French Open quarterfinal, Alexander Zverev started with a two-set lead before closing out the Alcaraz match in four sets.

At Wimbledon, Alcaraz found himself down by two sets to Sinner and in the end lost in four sets. “Obviously start two sets to love in a Grand Slam is a handicap,” Alcaraz said. “Is tough to come back. I tried to get better in the third and the fourth, but obviously Jannik was better than me.

I didn’t take my chances in the fourth. A lot of break points. Starting like this, as I said in Roland Garros, starting like this against one of the best player in the world here in a Grand Slam, it’s tough to come back then. I’m trying to improve that for the next Grand Slams, to start better the matches”.
