French Open runner-up Cori Gauff described Rafael Nadal as “a great representation of tennis” and revealed it was inspiring to her to see the Spaniard refusing to quit while in pain versus Denis Shapovalov. In the Rome Masters last-16, Nadal made a strong start to his match versus Shapovalov but then started experiencing foot pain.

Even though Nadal was clearly in major pain and discomfort, he refused to retire as Shapovalov won 1-6 7-5 6-2. Reflecting on that match, Gauff thought Nadal’s level of competitiveness was off the charts. “What inspired me most about him was in Rome, even though he was limping he still stayed out there & finished the match.

That’s something I really respect because he’s thinking about the fans. He’s a great competitor, great person, a great representation of tennis,” Gauff said of Nadal, per Reem Abulleil.

Nadal praised Gauff

Gauff wasn’t the only that talked positive about Nadal as the Spaniard returned the favor and shared a couple of nice words about the 18-year-old American.

Gauff is one of the brightest names of the game and Nadal reveals he admires the 18-year-old for the way she behaves on and off the court. “I like the way that she talks to the crowd and to the press at the end of the matches.

She’s fresh. She’s natural. Looks very mature in her thoughts. I think she is a fighter. I like the way that she plays. She fights for every ball. Even sometimes when she’s not playing that well, she keeps fighting till the end, running for every ball.
