Canelo’s trainer Reynoso says they wanted Bivol rematch

By Dan Ambrose: Canelo Alvarez’s trainer Eddy Reynoso says they wanted the rematch with Dmitry Bivol, but because of the company they work with, they’re now taking the trilogy with Gennadiy Golovkin on September 17th.

What’s interesting is Reynoso is calling the Golovkin trilogy “personal” but not saying the same about the Bivol fight being personal. Why isn’t it personal with Bivol? He’s the one that beat Canelo like a drum and made him look like a rank amateur last May.

Reynoso isn’t saying which company told them that Canelo (57-2-2, 39 KOs) must face 40-year-old Golovkin next, but he may be talking about Matchroom Boxing.

It’s good for Reynoso & Canelo that they have someone to blame for not taking a rematch with Bivol because it takes some of the heat off.

Whoever told Canelo that he needs to face Golovkin (42-1-1, 37 KOs) instead of WBA light heavyweight champion Bivol (20-0, 11 KOs), they arguably did him a big favor.

The way that Bivol dominated a tired-looking Canelo, outboxing him with easy last May, it’s predictable that the same thing would happen in a rematch.

Eddie Hearn of Matchroom is talking about Canelo facing Bivol next May if the two fighters win their interim fights this year.

Canelo will need to defeat Golovkin in September and possibly a defense against his WBA mandatory John Ryder in December in the UK.

Unless Canelo’s self-confidence has taken a hike from his loss to Bivol, he should beat Golovkin and Ryder without too many problems.

This isn’t the Golovkin from 2017 & 2018 that Canelo is fighting on September 17th. Golovkin has gotten old and looked every bit his age in his last fight against Ryota Murata last April in Tokyo, Japan.

“We feel good, but like everybody, nobody likes to have a loss, right?” said Eddy Reynoso to Behind The Gloves when asked about Canelo Alvarez’s loss to Dmitry Bivol in his previous fight.

“We are trying to learn from this, and sometimes in life, you need to lose in order to grow. It’s a fight that everybody wants, and, of course, we want the fight, but it wasn’t our fault,” said Reynoso about why Canelo didn’t take the immediate rematch with Bivol.

It’s because of the other company that we work with, but now GGG stays at 160. There are a lot of factors, but we want the fight.

“Abel Sanchez has nothing to do now, but at that time, yes, of course. But now, it’s a fight that we want [with Golovkin].

“When they’re talking about personal, it could be because we already fought 24 rounds. Something is personal now,  but I could see it’s a great fight and everybody, but it’s a fight. Like I told you, Abel Sanchez has nothing to do now.
