Former world No. 1 Garbine Muguruza has apologized to her fans as she admitted that this season hasn’t been easy. Muguruza, 28, finished her 2021 season on a high note, winning the WTA Finals. Muguruza was expected to be a major factor in 2022 but instead it has been a very disappointing season for her.

This week at Wimbledon, Muguruza suffered a shock first round loss as Greetje Minnen beat the Spaniard 6-4 6-0. Muguruza didn’t enjoy great runs at the Australian Open and French Open either. Muguruza picked up a second round loss at the Australian Open, before she lost in the French Open first round.

“These last six months have been very easy. Dealing with defeats, frustration and pressure. Competing at Roland Garros and Wimbledon, tournaments that I love, with all the preparation and effort that my whole team has made, not finding my tennis has been emotionally, a very hard blow.

To my followers and those who place their expectations on me, just to say that I’m sorry and I hope that the remaining six months of 2022 are more bearable and I can at least find those good feelings again,” Muguruza said in a message posted on her Twitter.

Muguruza ousted by Minnen

Muguruza got off to a slow start to the match as Minnen claimed an early break and led 3-0 after the opening three games of the match.

In the seventh game, Muguruza missed out on a break point as Minnen opened a 5-2 lead. Muguruza maybe didn’t get a break in the seventh game but she broke back Minnen in the ninth game to cut the deficit to 4-5. Just when it seemed Muguruza was finding her game, she got broken again in the 10th game – when she was serving to stay in the first set.

Muguruza’s game fell apart after losing the first set as Minnen claimed a bagel in the second set to complete a straight-set win.
