Former world No. 1 Angelique Kerber said she was happy to see Serena Williams compete at Wimbledon and added she is anxious to see where the American plays next. On Tuesday, Williams played her first singles match in 12 months.

Unfortunatly for Williams and all of her fans, she sustained a tight loss as Harmony Tan edged out the American 7-5 1-6 7-6 (7). “I take all my hats off to her that she has come back. It shows that she is a champion and still does everything she can to play on Centre Court.

I’m very excited to see where and when we’ll see her again,” Kerber said.

Kerber could see Williams in action at the US Open

When asked about her next plans, WIlliams revealed she would like to compete at the US Open.

“When you’re at home, especially in New York, and the US Open, that being the first place I’ve won a Grand Slam, is something that’s always super special,” Williams said. “Your first time is always special.

There’s definitely lots of motivation to get better and to play at home.” Meanwhile, 2018 Wimbledon champion Kerber is making a strong progress at The All England Club. On Wednesday, Kerber saw off Magda Linette 6-3 6-3 to progress into the Wimbledon third round.

Kerber knows very well what it takes to make a strong run at Wimbledon, and even though she is seemingly past her prime, she can’t be counted at Wimbledon. “Wimbledon is really a special place, especially for me where I won this tournament once, playing [semifinals] so many times as well,” Kerber said.

“Coming back here, seeing the crowd, seeing family, faces, it feels so good to be back here. It’s always a tough tournament where you have to play your best. I don’t know, I think I can play always like a few percent better [here] than in other tournaments.” Kerber plays Elise Mertens in the Wimbledon third round.
