Arsenal’s pre-season schedule as Gunners head to USA

Mikel Arteta is still hoping to make additions to his Arsenal squad this summer despite the pending arrival of Manchester City forward Gabriel Jesus.

The Brazilian has been one of the Gunners main targets this summer to help replace former captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who left for Barcelona in January, and Alexandre Lacazette who has moved back to Lyon after his contract in north London expired. The deal is now in its final stages with a £45million fee having been agreed with City, and the Arsenal will now move on to landing their other targets.

It comes up to five players could leave the Gunners to help raise £67million for Arteta’s transfer kitty. And there are good signs for Stan Kroenke’s ownership of the club as he celebrates a third major triumph of 2022.

Here are Mirror Football’s latest Arsenal headlines.

Arteta’s remaining transfer targets

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta will look to move for Leeds United star Raphinha and Ajax defender Lisandro Martinez once the club finalises the signing of Manchester City forward Gabriel Jesus.

The 25-year-old was made Arteta’s top target heading into the summer transfer window and the deal finally looks set to go through after a £45million fee was agreed with his current club City. The move could also have repercussions for current members of Arteta’s squad, with Raphinha’s arrival set to signal the end of Nicolas Pepe’s Arsenal career.

There will also be huge competition for places next season, with Martinez and Saliba due to put pressure on Ben White and Gabriel Magalhaes at the heart of the defence. It appears Arteta’s masterplan is finally coming to fruition and the Gunners may well go into the new season with a squad capable of challenging for silverware.

Five players who could leave

Gabriel Jesus is set to join Brazilian wonderkid Marquinhos, Portuguese playmaker Fabio Vieira and American goalkeeper Matt Turner in signing for Arsenal this summer.

But to offset the incomings, some departures may also be needed. With Turner arriving to challenge Aaron Ramsdale in goal, Bernd Leno could depart. The German has just a year left on his contract at the club and the Gunners will be hoping they can cash in now rather than lose him for nothing in a year’s time.

Record signing Nicolas Pepe has never hit the heights expected of him and with the club targeting Raphinha, the Ivory Coast international could leave. Rob Holding is also facing increased competition for a first-team place with William Saliba returning from his loan spell with Marseille and the Gunners still hoping to beat Manchester United to the signing of Lisandro Martinez.

While Lucas Torreira and Ainsley Maitland-Niles are also returning from loan spells, with the club hoping they can raise some funds by securing their departures permanently.

Kroenke celebrates another major success

Arsenal owner Stan Kroenke is celebrating his third major success of the year after his NHL side Colorado Avalanche won the Stanley Cup.

It follows his lacrosse side Colorado Mammoth winning the title and his Los Angeles Rams franchise claiming NFL Super Bowl victory in February. The victories could be a good sign for Arsenal fans, with Kroenke obviously aware of how to build successful teams with his other sides.

And with the Gunners set to spend big once again in the summer transfer window, it may just be a matter of time before that success is replicated in north London.
