By Craig Daly: Canelo Alvarez says Gennadiy Golovkin has just been waiting the last four years for his final payday against him without fighting anybody good.
Canelo and Golovkin fight their trilogy match on September 17th at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The fight will be streamed on DAZN PPV.
Golovkin (42-1-1, 37 KOs) has avoided losing to anybody since the last time he fought Canelo (57-2-2, 39 KOs) in 2018, but he’s arguably achieved that feat by not taking risky fights.
Canelo doesn’t think much of Golovkin’s play-it-safe strategy to ensure he got his third payday against him because he himself has taken risky fights in the last four years.
One example of Canelo taking a high-caliber opponent was his last fight against WBA light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol on May 7th, a contest in which the Mexican star lost.
Canelo says he intends to fight Bivol again, and he’s going to do it at 175, not 168. He won’t drag Bivol down in weight to try and gain an edge against him.
“Knockout is what I see,” said Canelo when asked how he sees his fight with Golovkin on September 17th. “Not now but you listen to him in the other country.
“He talks a lot of s***,” said Canelo when told that Golovkin didn’t have much to say about him on Friday during their roundtable with the media. “Not now because he has me in front of the team. You call the lion when you see he’s coming, and I’m coming.
“He always pretends he’s a nice guy in front of the people. He’s an a**hole. That’s what he is. He’s an a**hole person. I’m not pretending to be nice. This is the way I am. I’m not pretending to be another person.
“He’s always pretending in front of you and the people. ‘Oh, I’m a nice guy.’ He’s not. Like always, everybody wants the Mexican fans, because they think the Mexican people buy the pay-per-view, and they do,” said Canelo when asked about Golovkin saying he uses the ‘Mexican style’ in the way he fights.
“They use Mexican colors, but it’s just business. I’m not. I’m real Mexican, and I fight for the people. Every fight is important for my legacy, every single fight. He wants his last payday. That’s what he wants,” said Canelo when told that Golovkin seems like he’s just been waiting all these years for the trilogy fight against him without fighting anyone of note.
“You look at my fights after GGG, and then look at who he fights,” said Canelo.
The youth advantage is on the 31-year-old Canelo’s side in this fight, and it’s going to be difficult for the 40-year-old Golovkin unless he can find the fountain of youth and drink from its restorative waters.
