Liverpool’s 2022-23 Premier League fixtures

Liverpool will start what promises to be another season to remember with a trip to Fulham in the Premier League.

The Reds came so close to top-flight glory last season, but their fast finish could only get them to within a point of eventual champions Manchester City. With that in mind, manager Jurgen Klopp will be desperate for his side to fly out of the traps.

With new £85 million forward Darwin Nunez in their ranks, there is an excellent opportunity for the Reds to set a fierce early pace.

Liverpool’s opening day sequence

The Reds have become well accustomed to playing newly-promoted sides on the opening day, with their draw against Fulham on Matchday One making it a record four years in succession.

Liverpool have played Norwich twice in the season opener – in 2018-19 and last season – as well as Leeds United in 2020-21.

Former Everton manager Marco Silva will be man across from Klopp in the dugout at Craven Cottage, as he steered Fulham to the Championship title last season in thrilling style. It will also be an intriguing occasion for new Liverpool signing Fabio Carvalho, who joined from Fulham this summer.

While Liverpool will be heavy favourites to win, newly-promoted teams are renowned for being dangerous in the early throes of a campaign.

Collymore compares Nunez and Haaland

Former Liverpool forward Stan Collymore doesn’t believe Darwin Nunez arrives in the Premier League with the same surety of goalscoring when compared to Manchester City’s new frontman Erling Haaland.

The Reds have signed Nunez from Benfica in a deal that could reach £85 million, making him potentially the most expensive signing in the club’s history. There will no doubt be comparisons between the two forwards both before and during the season. Collymore thinks that while City and Liverpool have both landed fine players, City may have the better finisher.

“Nunez is not as guaranteed as Haaland, who at international level and at Borussia Dortmund has had a proper grounding and learned to deal with expectations at a level Nunez has not,” he said.

“That’s not to say Nunez hasn’t had a great season at Benfica, because he has — he’s a proper centre-forward but someone who can drift around and come off the left, run with the ball, and I like that.

“But he’s still way more of a risk and a gamble than Haaland, even though for Liverpool it’s a risk that’s worth taking.”

Bellingham plan

After landing Nunez, Carvalho and edging closer to the signing of Calvin Ramsay, it would appear Liverpool are close to having their transfer business done for the summer.

According to David Maddock, the three acquisitions will likely conclude the Reds’ business in this window. However, it would appear plans are already being put in place for the following summer, with England and Borussia Dortmund midfielder Jude Bellingham on the club’s radar.

“Interest in Borussia Dortmund teenager Jude Bellingham remains, with Klopp remaining as a long-term admirer, but with the German side having already been forced to accept Erling Haaland ’s switch to Manchester City, they do not intend on letting another key player depart the Westfalenstadion this summer,” it’s said.

“Unless the situation changes dramatically, that would see Liverpool be forced to rely on their remaining midfield options for the 2022/23 campaign ahead of a potential push for Bellingham next summer.”
