Rob Page discusses Gareth Bale’s role at Wales

Wales are on the brink of securing just their second ever FIFA World Cup final’s appearance this weekend as they prepare to face Ukraine in their European Qualifying playoff final, which would mark their first appearance at the tournament since 1958.

The Dragons overcame Austria 2-1 in their semi-final play-off back in March thanks to a double from national hero Gareth Bale, and must now face Ukraine who comfortably dispatched Scotland 3-1 just four days ago, after having their original date postponed due to Russia ’s invasion.

The winner of this tie will secure their place in Qatar later this year and will be drawn into Group B alongside England, Iran and the United States.

When is Wales vs Ukraine?

Wales vs Ukraine will kick-off at 5pm on Sunday, June 5 at the Cardiff City Stadium.

The last meeting between these two sides came back in March 2016 during an international friendly, in which Andriy Yarmolenko scored the only goal of the game to give the hosts victory in Kiev.

The only other two meetings between these nations came during qualification for the 2002 World Cup, when both games ended 1-1 in March and June, 2001.

Gareth Bale’s double helped Wales to see off Austria in their semi-final back in March, and now they will look for the same again against Ukraine on Sunday

As for Ukraine, Oleksandr Petrakov is likely to name an unchanged side from the one that saw off Scotland in midweek to reach this stage, as he looks to avoid shaking up a winning formula that worked so well at Hampden Park.

The Euro 2012 co-hosts picked up no fresh injury concerns from that victory, while the likes of Everton’s Vitaliy Mykolenko, Manchester City’s Oleksandr Zinchenko, who will be making his 50th cap, and West Ham United’s Andriy Yarmolenko will all be on show once again here.
