Even when the Mets are good, they’re still the Mets.
Despite injuries to aces Jacob deGrom and Max Scherzer, New York has raced out to a 35-19 record and sits atop the National League East, 8.5 games up over the reigning World Series champion Braves.
Pete Alonso is raking, Taijuan Walker is making batters chase and relievers Edwin Diaz (16.6 K/9), Adam Ottavino (13.0 K/9) and Drew Smith (10.7 K’s/9) are missing bats at impressive rates.
Still, things are never that easy in Flushing. And although Scherzer has yet to make his return to the mound from a left oblique strain, the three-time Cy Young winner still found a way to hurt himself in the most unusual of circumstances while rehabbing.

What new injury did Max Scherzer suffer?
Scherzer suffered a slight wound on his throwing hand after being bitten by his dog. He won’t need stitches and the bite shouldn’t impede Scherzer’s recovery from the oblique strain, according to the New York Daily News and other publications.
On Saturday, Scherzer tweeted the details of how he suffered the wound.

“My dog Rafi hurt her leg on a run,” he tweeted. “She was howling in pain and I went to calm her down by putting my hands on her. When I did that she bit my right hand. Fortunately it wasn’t a bad bite. I took one day off from throwing and was able to long toss the next day. This will have no effect on my rehab and this is literally a non story.”

Scherzer wasn’t the first Met to suffer an injury under unusual circumstances this week. Shortstop Francisco Lindor was kept out of New York’s clash with the Dodgers on Thursday after injuring his finger earlier in the day. How’d he do that, you ask?
