Newcastle plan to carry on spending after splashing out £94million in January to begin the Saudi revolution at St James’ Park.
Magpies boss Eddie Howe has tried to manage the fans’ expectations by saying they need to be “smart” in the transfer market rather than just throw money at players – but Newcastle still intend to be busy as they continue to strengthen their squad with a striker and centre-half among their top priorities.
Howe may plead for patience, but he will be expected to build a squad capable of challenging for Europe next season as Newcastle and their Saudi owners take the second step in their development. Mirror Sport has the round-up of the latest transfer news and rumours.
Newcastle in the hunt for Traore
Adama Traore is set to leave Wolves this summer after Barcelona did not take up the opportunity to sign him permanently following his loan spell. Tottenham remain keen on Traore, having tried to sign him in January, and now 90mins claim Newcastle are interested.
Newcastle want to strengthen all areas of their team and Traore is one of the quickest and most devastating wingers in the Premier League. The Spaniard would also be available for a reduced fee because he is entering the final 12 months of his contract at Molineux and has rejected Wolves’ offer of new terms.

Botman says yes to Milan move
Corriere dello Sport claims Lille defender Sven Botman has given the thumbs up to a move to AC Milan instead of Newcastle. The Magpies wanted Botman in January and have maintained their interest, but the centre-half has reportedly “given Milan his word” and is now waiting for them to sign him.
Lille want €30million (£25.5m) for Botman and Milan have the cash after US RedBird Capital Partners completed their £1billion takeover of the club on Wednesday.
Wolves make transfer spending case
Wolves chairman Jeff Shi has told the Birmingham Mail that Newcastle should only have a little more spending power than Wolves if the FFP rules are being properly applied. Shi claims Newcastle are not as big as the Premier League’s Big Six and only marginally larger than Wolves.
Shi said: “If the Premier League, or if Europe, are clear about the (FFP) rules, the regulations, the ceiling is always there. Newcastle United is a good club, a big club, and maybe if you’re talking about the stadium capacity, maybe commercially, just about the club itself, maybe they have slightly higher potential than us, but not too much, so still not comparable to the Big Six.
“So maybe they have a little bit higher ceiling there, but not too much, so I don’t see a difference between us too much. Yes, they can spend more, but also they will reach a ceiling sooner or later, so they will face the same challenges as we are facing now.”
