Canelo Alvarez “desperate to avenge” loss to Bivol in 2023 says Eddie Hearn

By Sean Jones: Eddie Hearn insists that Canelo Alvarez is absolutely “desperate” to gain revenge for his loss to Dmitry Bivol despite his decision to bypass it in favor of fighting Gennadiy Golovkin next on September 17th.

Canelo (57-2-2, 39 KOs) will have 12 months to try and figure out how to make the adjustments needed when he faces Bivol (20-0, 11 KOs) next year on the Cinco de Mayo holiday weekend in May 2023.

Hearn wants Bivol to stay busy around the same time, defending his WBA light heavyweight title against possibly his fighter Joshua Buatsi.

In the meantime, Canelo will fight 40-year-old Golovkin (42-1-1, 37 KOs) in the trilogy fight on September 17th. Hearn isn’t saying what he’ll do if Canelo loses this fight.

Is it game over, or will he run it back against GGG for a fourth fight, perhaps in September 2023? Losing to Golovkin would be a clear sign that Canelo is past it.

All that golfing that he’s been doing has eroded his game where even past his best Golovkin can beat him. Of course, many fans feel that Golovkin has already defeated Canelo twice.

“We spoke to Bivol and his team; we’re working toward the rematch for that fight on Cinco De Mayo next year,” said Eddie Hearn to DAZN Boxing Show. “There was really only one time to fight GGG and it was in September.

He’s desperate to avenge, but the original plan remains. GGG against Canelo Alvarez for the undisputed super middleweight championship of the world on September 17th,” said Hearn.

Boxing fans will wonder why Canelo is fighting Golovkin if he is so desperate for a rematch with Bivol? It doesn’t make a lot of sense.

“Going into the Bivol fight, the belief was that Canelo was invincible and couldn’t be beaten,” said Hearn. “As good as the first two Canelo-GGG fights were, can GGG beat Canelo Alvarez?

“Obviously, the defeat makes things a little more believable for fight fans that GGG can pull it off. There’s plenty of bad blood between them.

“It’s probably the only mix of people I’ve seen these guys talk badly about in any stage in their career, and I’m really looking forward to being a part of a huge promotion,” Hearn said of the Canelo vs. GGG 3 event.

“I think it is bigger,” Hearn said about the Canelo-Golovkin III trilogy match being bigger after Canelo’s loss to Bivol. “Canelo comes back to defend his championships against GGG. He has to win this fight.

“The toughest thing for Canelo in this fight [Golovkin] is to bounce back from that defeat. He was devasted to lose to Bivol.

“We sat down with Bivol’s team and said, ‘The plan is for you to defend your championship around September, and then you’re going to rematch Canelo Alvarez in May,’” said Hearn.
