World No. 1 Novak Djokovic said he was glad with his performance versus Alex Molcan as he noted that the Slovak can be a tricky opponent on clay. On Wednesday, Djokovic saw off Molcan 6-2 6-3 7-6 (4) to progress into the French Open third round.

One of the reasons why the match between Djokovic and Molcan was interesting was because Djokovic met his ex-coach Marian Vajda. Vajda, whose split with Djokovic was announced in early March, now works with Molcan. “I’m pleased with the way I’m feeling on the court [and] the way I’ve been striking the ball,” Djokovic said, per the ATP website.

“I think today was also under challenging conditions and playing against a specialist on clay, someone that is a tricky opponent and coming off from the [Lyon] final last week. It was never going to be an easy match, but I thought I performed very well”.

Djokovic handled the business on Wednesday

Djokovic made a good start to the match, claiming the first break of the match in the fourth game to take a 3-1 lead. In the eighth game, when Molcan was serving to stay in the first set, Djokovic claimed his second break to seal the opener.

After winning the first set, Djokovic earned the first break of the second set in the sixth game to open a 4-2 lead. Djokovic then routinely held on to his serve the rest of the set to take a two-set lead. Up by two sets, Djokovic claimed the first break of the third set in the third game to open a 2-1 lead.

Molcan responded in the following game, breaking back Djokovic to level the third set to two games apiece. As no more breaks were seen, the third set went into a tie-break. The key moment of the tie-break was Djokovic winning three consecutive points to open a 5-2 lead.

Molcan saved the first match point but couldn’t save the second match point as Djokovic completed a straight-set win.
