USFL schedule Week 5: What football games are on today? TV channels, times, scores

We are motoring toward the midpoint of the new USFL’s inaugural season. As Week 5 arrives, there remains one undefeated team: the Birmingham Stallions.

The Stallions won their fourth consecutive game to start the season last week against the Tampa Bay Bandits. Birmingham won 16-10 and once again was able to perform better in the second half than it did in the first. The Stallions will look to improve to 5-0 in Week 5 as they take on the 2-2 Philadelphia Stars, coached by Bart Andrus.

Elsewhere, Kirby Wilson’s Pittsburgh Maulers remain winless and appear frustrated with their quarterback play. They signed former James Madison star Vad Lee ahead of Week 5, so perhaps he will eventually be an option at the position. This week, they will take on the Houston Gamblers (1-3) in a battle between last-place teams in each division.

The other games this weekend will be a Friday night battle between the 2-2 Bandits and 1-3 Michigan Panthers and clash of 3-1 teams on Saturday in the New Jersey Generals vs. New Orleans Breakers game. The Generals-Breakers game is this week’s marquee matchup and could be a preview of the USFL championship game.

Friday USFL game TV channel, live stream

Here’s how to watch Week 5’s USFL game on Friday:

Bandits vs. Panthers

The Bandits and the Panthers are both coming off close losses with the Panthers’ defeat being the more painful of the two. Michigan lost in the waning seconds against Philadelphia after Michael Carrizosa missed a potential game-winning 21-yard field goal. The kick doinked off the left upright and led the Panthers to release the former San Jose State punter, who found little success as a kicker in the USFL.

Now, Shea Patterson and the Panthers will look to bounce back against the Bandits, who lost by six to the undefeated Stallions in Week 4. Jordan Ta’amu has been one of the USFL’s most effective quarterbacks while the Bandits’ defense has been solid throughout the season. They just need to put together another full, 60-minute effort to get back on the winning track.

Saturday USFL game TV channel, live stream

Here’s how to watch Week 5’s USFL game on Saturday:

Generals vs. Breakers

The Generals vs. Breakers game is the marquee matchup of the week, as it features two of the league’s 3-1 teams in what could be a USFL championship game preview. The Generals are one of the best running teams in the USFL and have averaged 178.3 rushing yards per game this season. Meanwhile, the Breakers are first in the league in passing yards per game at 259.3, so this will be a battle of two effective offenses.

This game may come down to which team can best limit the strength of its opponent. Considering that the Breakers limited Mark Thompson against the Gamblers last week, New Orleans should have the advantage. The Generals will have a tough time slowing down quarterback Kyle Sloter, who has been a dynamic playmaker through the air despite dealing with a groin injury. Sloter just has to avoid turnovers, which have proven problematic for him in weeks past.

Sunday USFL games TV channels, live streams

Here’s how to watch the two USFL games that will be played on Sunday.

Stars vs. Stallions

The Stallions are the lone undefeated team remaining in the USFL, and they will look to continue that on Sunday against the Stars. Alex McGough is back at quarterback for Birmingham and the Stallions continue to be one of the best second-half teams in the USFL. They should only get better on offense as they add former Alabama star Bo Scarbrough to their backfield ahead of Week 5.

The Stars, meanwhile, enter their second game with Case Cookus as their primary starting quarterback. He replaced Bryan Scott, who suffered a leg injury, in Week 3 and led Philly to a one-point win over Michigan last week. The Stars have a high-powered passing attack, but their defense has been shaky, particularly against the run. They will need to have a big game to knock off the Stallions.

Gamblers vs. Maulers

Both the Gamblers and Maulers are desperate for wins as we enter Week 5 of the USFL season. The Gamblers (1-3) were tied with the Breakers with less than a minute left in their Week 4 game despite being outgained 523-155 during the contest. Their defense has generated a lot of turnovers, including four against the Breakers, while Mark Thompson has proven to be one of the best running backs in the league.

The Maulers are built similarly to the Gamblers in that they would like to rely on their defense and running game to carry them. However, Kirby Wilson’s squad has yet to win, as quarterbacks Kyle Lauletta and Josh Love (who has since been released) have struggled while the Garrett Groshek and Madre London tag team hasn’t been as productive as they had hoped at running back. Maybe going against Clayton Thorson and a weaker passing offense will help the Maulers, but there’s a reason that they remain the USFL’s lone winless team.
