Inter Miami forward Gonzalo Higuain has issued a warning to Luis Suarez over a potential MLS move in the future, insisting the American league is far from easy.
The Argentine forward is currently struggling to maintain a starting position on Phil Neville’s roster, and was named on the bench for the Herons’ recent victory over Atlanta United.
And speaking to Christian Vieri recently on Twitch, Higuain admitted that MLS had proved to be more of a challenge that he expected.
“I thought that I would come here with a cigar in my mouth, but it is difficult. It is a hard league. I learnt that it is similar to Serie A,” he said.
Higuain first joined the South Florida expansion side in 2020, and has since recorded 15 goals and 12 assists in 45 matches. But the numbers are deceiving.
With the Argentine forward on the roster, Inter Miami ranked 10th in the league during his first year, and 11th in 2021. He has yet to lead the team into the Major League Soccer postseason. He has also seen several injury spells that kept him on the sidelines for weeks at a time, most recently a knee lesion in April that forced him out for almost a month.
After weeks of speculation around the arrival of Suarez to the United States, Higuain’s caution may be timely.
It was first reported that Suarez would make his move in the summer, when his contract with Atletico Madrid ends. He sparked further conversation after admitting playing in the American league wouldn’t be a ‘bad option’.
“The other day I was walking through San Francisco and people did not know me,” he told ESPN Deportes. “The country is very big, football isn’t the main sport and you can be more relaxed. It is not a bad option.”
This wouldn’t be the first time the La Liga forward is linked to Major League Soccer. Inter Miami previously expressed interest in Suarez during the 2022 offseason, after the departure of Blaise Matuidi.
While it’s looking like Wolves loanee Leonardo Campana will stay on permanently, anything can happen with David Beckham in charge.
