Lagos badminton plans more international tourneys

Oba Alayeluwa Saheed Ademola Elegushi, Kusenla III believes Nigeria’s athletes in the ongoing Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games have the potential to make the nation proud. He also believes the athletes need Nigerians’ support through prayers to excel.

Speaking when a delegation of the Lagos State Badminton Association, led by its chairman, John Duru, came to thank him for his support to the sport at the weekend, the monarch prayed for Team Nigeria’s success, saying that the country’s youths need to be encouraged to take to the sector to curb societal vices.

Oba Elegushi also advised the Olympics team against using performance-enhancing drugs at the games.

Earlier, Duru had thanked the monarch for his support for badminton in Lagos State, saying the association would continue working with him to grow the sport.

“As we are planning to organise more domestic and international championships for our players, the association is looking ahead to have a competition in honour of the Oba. Our target is to discover more badminton talents for the country, as two of our top players discovered in Lagos State are currently representing the nation in Japan.

“The association will host a world recognised badminton tournament later this year christened the Lagos Badminton classics and we look forward to assembling Nigeria’s best men and women players to battle other teams coming from all parts of the world.

“We will continue to meet with major stakeholders and seek more sponsors to develop badminton in Lagos State,” he said.
