Emmanuel Gyan and Rose Akushe yesterday emerged winners of the 2019 Warri/Effurun Peace Marathon held in Warri, Delta State.
The 10km race, which was under a very harsh weather for the athletes, did not stop them from competing for the N300,000 available to the winners.
In the men’s race, the battle, which was between Adamu Mau’zu and Gyan, later saw Gyan pulled away with 500 metres left to finish the race, as he breezed into the Warri Township Stadium in a time of 31:31 seconds. Mau’zu then finished in second position with a fight in 31:50, as Gideon Gyei in 32:37 seconds settled for the third. Stephen Apochi, however, was the first Delta athlete to come in.
In the women’s race, Rose Akushe, who was the clear leader from the start of the race, displayed some awesome endurance as she cross the line with her belly in 38:26 seconds to win the N300,000 at stake. Elizabeth Nuhu came second in 39:12 seconds, while Monica Ezekiel Mandung placed third in 40:39 seconds.
