‘They try to provoke me, but I have turned a deaf ear’

Outspoken politician and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, Kennedy Agyapong, has assured Ghanaians that he will no longer allow provocations to derail his focus.

He stated emphatically that his political maturity and leadership vision are now firmly rooted in calmness and strategic thinking.

Addressing a group of party members—reportedly delegates—in a video shared on social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter), the former Assin Central Member of Parliament said that while his political opponents often make it their mission to provoke him into anger, he is no longer falling for such tactics.

“They deliberately speak to provoke me to anger so that I will go ballistic, but that will not happen,” he asserted. “We now know how to cure their mischief. They don’t have anything to say to bring me down. All they ever say is that ‘as for Ken Agyapong, he easily gets angry,’ but I will not be provoked.”

Known for his fiery personality and blunt rhetoric, Agyapong acknowledged that he has previously been criticized for his temper, but insists those days are behind him.

“You will not hear me throwing tantrums. That will not happen. Even if someone speaks ill of me deliberately to provoke me, I will not respond—because I have turned a deaf ear.”

The maverick politician, who has built a successful business empire in media, real estate, and agriculture, redirected the focus of his comments toward national development and economic empowerment.

He emphasized that what the country needs now is not mere talk, but actionable ideas that will translate into jobs and economic stability.

“What we are looking for is someone who has ideas,” Agyapong said. “If I can create employment as a private individual, imagine what I can do as president.”

Agyapong’s remarks have sparked conversations among political watchers, many of whom view his recent posture as a strategic recalibration aimed at positioning himself for future national leadership.

Tema Oil Refinery to resume operations in October – MD

Tema Oil Refinery was shut down in 2021 due to a lack of crude oil Tema Oil Refinery was shut down in 2021 due to a lack of crude oil

The Acting Managing Director of the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR), Edmund Kombat, has disclosed that the facility will resume operations in October 2025.

According to him, the move is aimed at reducing Ghana’s dependence on imported refined petroleum products.

Appearing before Parliament’s Energy Committee, Kombat pointed out that the country currently spends approximately US$400 million monthly on fuel imports, and the revival of TOR could lead to substantial savings.

“We spend $400 million every month importing refined petroleum products. When TOR is running, we will need less than 60% of that money to import refined petroleum products,” he said.

He added that; “Based on the timeline we are working with, between September and October, we should have the CDU [Crude Distillation Unit] back on stream.”

TOR was shut down in 2021 due to a lack of crude oil, the key raw material for refining.

Kombat noted that the refinery now has the capacity to process up to 60,000 barrels daily, which could meet between 45% and 60% of the country’s local fuel demand.

Meanwhile, a Turnaround Maintenance Committee supervised by the Deputy Managing Director, has been established to oversee and ensure the full restoration of the refinery.

Joseph Sackey was clad in blue shorts adorned with the pastor’s image Joseph Sackey was clad in blue shorts adorned with the pastor’s image

Founder and General Overseer of Believers Worship Center, Stephen Adom Kyei-Duah, has finally met Ghanaian boxer Joseph Sackey, who wore shorts bearing the image of the church leader during his bout against a Pakistani boxer.

Joseph Sackey became the talk of social media on June 14, 2025, after losing his bout against Abdul Khan at the “Battle of the Beasts” boxing event.

However, it wasn’t just his defeat that got people talking- it had a lot to do with what he was wearing.

Sackey stepped into the ring wearing blue shorts with a sticker showing the face of Adom Kyei-Duah, the General Overseer of Believers Worship Center.

In a video that has since gone viral, Adom Kyei-Duah said to his congregation that “He’s not a member of the Philadelphia family but he has massive love for me, that is why he placed my sticker on his shorts.”

He noted that because of the gesture of the boxer towards him, he also loves him.

Sackey’s decision to wear Adom Kyei-Duah’s sticker on his shorts was seen as a show of spiritual preparedness for the match but did not reflect in the outcome of the bout.

Sackey blamed the referee for his defeat, claiming he tripped and the fight was stopped prematurely.

The incident has since sparked mixed reactions online with some praising Adom Kyei-Duah’s gesture while others questioned his motives.

Bawumia dominates but NDC supporters back Ken Agyapong in NPP race – Survey

0

A recent analysis by Africa Policy Lens has unveiled significant insights regarding the preferences of supporters within the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) and their views on potential flagbearers for the next general elections in 2028.

The report, released today, indicates that former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia remains the frontrunner among NPP supporters for the party’s presidential candidacy in 2028.

The survey revealed that a remarkable 70.6% of NPP respondents expressed their support for Dr Bawumia, showcasing a strong loyalty from the party’s base.

In stark contrast, NPP party stalwart Kennedy Agyapong trails behind with 21.4% of the same group indicating their preference for him as the party’s candidate.

Figure 1: Preferred NPP flagbearer by respondent’s party affiliation (APL survey). Among NPP supporters, 70.6% favour Bawumia and 21.4% favour Agyapong; among NDC supporters, 48.4% favour Agyapong and 35.3% favour Bawumia (others/undecided omitted).

Additionally, the report provides a fascinating look at the opinions of members of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Surprisingly, Kennedy Agyapong enjoys considerable popularity among NDC supporters, with nearly 48.4% backing him, while Dr Bawumia receives support from 35.3% of NDC respondents.

The remaining participants remain undecided, illustrating a unique cross-party dynamic in the next elections.

Reasons for Bawumia’s popularity

Supporters of Dr Bawumia cited several compelling factors for their preference.

Many believe he represents the NPP’s best chance to regain power in the 2028 election.

His northern heritage is viewed as a “strategic electoral asset” for two primary reasons: it could enhance the NPP’s competitiveness in traditionally NDC-dominant regions and further project the party’s image as an inclusive, national entity.

The report emphasises, “Bawumia’s broad national appeal—evident in his lead across 12 out of 16 regions—reinforces his image as a unifying candidate with cross-regional support.”

Regional support breakdown

Dr Bawumia’s support spans a substantial portion of the nation, with his popularity particularly pronounced in NPP strongholds such as the Ashanti and Eastern Regions, as well as competitive areas like Greater Accra.

Conversely, Kennedy Agyapong leads in three regions: Central, Volta, and Western North, with the Ahafo region showing an even divide in preferences.

The survey highlights Dr Bawumia’s dominance in northern Ghana, where he is expected to secure significant support even among NDC voters.

“He would carry the Northern, North East, Upper West, Upper East, and Savannah regions, showcasing his cross-party appeal,” the report noted.

However, the findings also indicate that Dr Bawumia faces challenges in traditional NDC strongholds such as Volta and certain parts of Western North, areas that will require strategic campaigning to ensure a nationwide victory in the upcoming elections.

As the political landscape continues to evolve, the NPP’s internal dynamics, along with the sentiments of NDC supporters, will play a critical role in shaping the strategies of the party leading up to the January elections.

Fire guts part of Afigya Kwabre South DCE’s official residence

A fire outbreak on Saturday night, June 21, gutted a section of the official residence of the District Chief Executive (DCE) for Afigya Kwabre South, Pearl Ankrah.

The blaze, which started around 10:00 pm at the DCE’s bungalow in Kodie, affected a portion of the building currently undergoing renovation.

According to Solomon Kwaku Adomako, spokesperson for the DCE, the structure had not yet been occupied by Madam Ankrah.

Personnel from the Mamponteng Division of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) responded swiftly to the emergency and managed to bring the fire under control, preventing it from spreading to other sections of the property.

No casualties were reported. The cause of the fire remains unknown, and police have launched an investigation into the incident.

Muslim Group Demands Apology from Agyapong Over Ally’s Remarks

Kennedy Agyapong Is Member Of Parliament For Assin Central

The Zongo Youth Movement has issued a warning to New Patriotic Party flagbearer hopeful Kennedy Agyapong following controversial comments attributed to his ally, Dr. Stephen Amoah.

The Muslim advocacy group stated Agyapong should avoid campaigning in Zongo and Muslim communities unless he apologizes for remarks allegedly suggesting the NPP’s 2024 election loss stemmed from former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s Islamic faith.

Abdullai Ali, Public Relations Officer of the Zongo Youth Movement, stated in a Citi News interview that Agyapong’s silence implies endorsement of the narrative. “It is not unfair to associate these remarks with Kennedy Agyapong’s camp. After the comments were made, no one from his team came forward to disown or condemn them. In fact, some members defended the claim on TV and radio using misleading data,” Ali stated. He emphasized the remarks threaten Ghana’s religious harmony.

Ali further clarified the group’s position: “If Kennedy Agyapong had issued a statement distancing himself from the remarks, we would have focused only on Dr. Amoah. But the silence from his camp speaks volumes.” The movement demands an unqualified apology to Ghana’s Muslim community and all citizens, warning that failure to address the matter could damage the NPP’s standing in Zongo communities.

Dr. Amoah, popularly known as “Sticka,” reportedly implied Bawumia’s religion contributed to the NPP’s electoral defeat, sparking backlash. The controversy emerges as political parties prepare for future elections, with the Zongo Youth Movement urging all actors to prioritize tolerant and inclusive campaigning to maintain national cohesion.

Newmont gives medical equipment to enhance healthcare delivery in Tano North

0

Duayaw Nkwanta (A/R), June 23, GNA – Healthcare delivery in the Tano North Municipality has received a boost following the donation of medical equipment and consumables valued at GH₵3.4 million by Newmont Ghana Gold Limited and Project C.U.R.E.

According to a press release issued by Newmont to the Ghana News Agency, the donation is expected to improve access to quality care and enhance service delivery at three beneficiary facilities: the Yamfo Health Centre, Susuanso CHPS Compound, and the St. John of God Hospital at Duayaw Nkwanta.

The medical supplies include surgical instrument kits, birthing supplies, thermometers, portable power transformers, and wheelchairs, all targeted at improving maternal care, emergency response, and general outpatient services.

At a brief handover ceremony, the Acting Head of the Duayaw Nkwanta Traditional Council, Nana Boakye Bonsu, commended the gesture and said it would greatly enhance patient care and restore confidence in the health system.

“The support will go a long way in improving the quality of care our people receive. We commend Newmont and Project C.U.R.E. (an international NGO) for this excellent gesture,” he said.

The Ahafo Regional Minister, Madam Charity Gardiner, also praised the donation, describing Newmont as a trusted partner in the region’s development efforts.

She expressed hope that such collaborations would be sustained to address gaps in critical sectors such as healthcare.

The release said the donation formed part of a broader partnership between Newmont and Project C.U.R.E. aimed at improving health outcomes in host communities.

In 2024, the two institutions jointly supported more than  2,000 residents in Ahafo and Akyem with health screening and treatment services.

They also facilitated a ‘Helping Babies Survive’ training programme for frontline health workers.

Community members have already begun to experience the impact.

A resident of Susuanso, who did not want to be identified, said the newly supplied items had reduced waiting time and improved service delivery at the local CHPS compound.

The release stated that the initiative aligned with Newmont’s commitment to creating shared value and improving lives through responsible and sustainable mining practices.

Why the NDC is afraid of NPP’s early presidential primaries – Paul Adom-Otchere opines

0

Paul Adom-Otchere claims NDC has been shaken by NPP's decision to elect flagbearer in January 2026 Paul Adom-Otchere claims NDC has been shaken by NPP’s decision to elect flagbearer in January 2026

Broadcaster, Paul Adom-Otchere, has asserted that the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) has been shaken by the decision of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to elect its flagbearer prior to organising internal elections for grassroots and national executives.

Speaking on his Good Evening Ghana programme on June 20, 2025, Adom-Otchere said that the NDC members are afraid of the NPP’s early presidential election because they are aware that it is a master stroke that will ensure they have no chance in the 2028 presidential election.

He indicated that the first reason why the NDC are worried about the move by the leadership of the NPP is that it would afford the party the needed resources to reorganise its grassroots and its election machinery ahead of the 2028 polls.

He also indicated that the NPP having its flagbearer in January 2026, will be a big blow to the NDC because the person would have more time to win the hearts of Ghanaians than the NDC candidate, who he said would be voted for possibly in December 2027.

“The NDC is worried because if any of these gentlemen emerge on 31 January as the NPP’s presidential candidate, he is the only one on the ballot in 2028. He’s the only one. The NDC don’t have anybody on the ballot yet. Now, the Supreme Court judges have confirmed to Parliament that John Dramani Mahama cannot and is ineligible to contest the 2028 election. So, the NDC doesn’t have a candidate,” he argued.

Adom-Otchere pointed out that the NDC won the 2024 election because of the same reason, hence they are afraid that it would happen to them in 2028.

OSP Rejects Vendetta Claims in Ofori-Atta Corruption Probe

0

Office Of The Special Prosecutor (OSP)
Office Of The Special Prosecutor (OSP)

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has firmly denied allegations of personal animosity driving its investigation into former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, directly countering recent remarks by Prof. Ransford Gyampo, Acting CEO of the Ghana Shippers’ Authority.

The OSP described Gyampo’s suggestion that the probe might be motivated by vendetta as “misleading and potentially harmful to the integrity of its operations.”

Prof. Gyampo, speaking on TV3’s Keypoints programme, had stated, “I hope the OSP is not motivated by vendetta,” while calling for fairness and transparency in the Ofori-Atta case. The OSP, responding via a 22 June Facebook statement, emphasized its investigation focuses solely on “stated allegations of corruption and corruption-related offences,” specifically the alleged abuse of office for personal gain related to a multi-year contract awarded to Strategic Mobilisation Limited (SML).

The OSP disclosed a significant detail: Prof. Gyampo contacted the Office while OSP and National Security officers were conducting a lawful search of SML’s premises. While not accusing Gyampo of wrongdoing, the OSP stated that “the timing and nature of this contact raise questions,” warning that “such actions have the potential to undermine the fight against corruption.” The Office reiterated its openness to public scrutiny and constructive criticism but cautioned public officials against attempts to interfere with ongoing investigations.

The statement also addressed Gyampo’s concerns regarding the OSP’s rejection of proposals by Ofori-Atta’s legal team for video conferencing interviews, citing the former minister’s reported ill health. The OSP clarified that Ofori-Atta has not been formally charged but must comply with lawful investigative procedures in person. It dismissed suggestions that officials should travel abroad to meet him, citing public expenditure concerns.

Prof. Gyampo had further questioned the OSP’s overall effectiveness, referencing unresolved high-profile cases like the Cecilia Dapaah investigation, remarking, “They have in the past started so dramatically but, in the end, we saw nothing.” The OSP’s rebuttal underscores the tension between its mandate for independent anti-corruption probes and public perceptions shaped by unresolved cases and external commentary.

Unposted environmental health officers appeal for immediate recruitment

0

A group of trained but unposted Environmental Health Officers and Assistants is appealing to the government for immediate financial clearance and recruitment to support Ghana’s ongoing sanitation efforts.

The call follows President John Dramani Mahama’s recent directive to Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) to establish district sanitation task forces and mobilise communities for the enforcement of sanitation laws and the organisation of clean-up campaigns.

In a statement, the group commended the President’s renewed focus on sanitation but raised concerns about the effectiveness of these initiatives amid the continued unemployment of more than 3,600 graduates from the country’s three Schools of Hygiene — Accra, Ho, and Tamale — since 2021.

“These directives are commendable, but without adequate staffing, they cannot be effectively implemented,” the group noted.

They emphasised that Environmental Health Officers are the only licensed professionals mandated to enforce sanitation regulations, yet four cohorts of trained officers have remained unemployed for over four years.

The group is urging key stakeholders — including the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralisation and Rural Development; the Ministry of Health; the Ministry of Finance; and Parliament’s Select Committee on Water and Sanitation — to urgently prioritise their recruitment.

They also called on regional ministers, MMDCEs, traditional leaders, and faith-based institutions to support their plea, stressing the essential role Environmental Health Officers play in disease prevention and public health promotion.

“We stand ready to serve and help prevent sanitation-related disease outbreaks,” the statement said.

“All we need is the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to building a cleaner, safer Ghana.”

Emerging African Economies in the Global World: Ghana’s strategic position

0

By Louis Gyimah

Global Economic Transformation

In the mid-2020s, the world economy continues to demonstrate unprecedented complexity, interdependency, and velocity. The fragility of global economic systems was highlighted by the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent supply chain disruptions, which disproportionately affected emerging economies. While developed nations deployed massive stimulus packages, African nations had limited fiscal space to respond. Ghana’s pandemic response required a $1 billion IMF Rapid Credit Facility in 2020, illustrating the interconnected challenges facing emerging economies.

The existing multilateral institutions still struggle to adapt to rapidly shifting power dynamics. The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), headquartered in Accra, Ghana, represents a direct response to the limitations of global trade governance. As WTO negotiations remain stalled, Africa has taken regional integration into its own hands, creating the world’s largest free trade area by number of participating countries.

The pace of economic transformation in Africa also mirrors historical patterns seen in Asia. While the UK took 154 years to double its GDP from $1,300 (PPP), China accomplished this in just 12 years. Ghana’s economy, following oil discoveries and production beginning in 2010, doubled its GDP per capita in 16 years (2006-2022), demonstrating a similar acceleration pattern.

The Rising Importance of African Markets

Africa’s economic prospects have evolved dramatically since the original “Africa Rising” narrative of the early 2010s. While developed economies face structural challenges including aging populations and high debt levels, several African economies continue to demonstrate resilience. According to the African Development Bank’s 2024 African Economic Outlook, East Africa remains the continent’s fastest-growing region, though West Africa (including Ghana) has shown impressive recovery from recent global shocks.

Ghana exemplifies both the opportunities and challenges facing African economies. Following its 2022 debt crisis and subsequent IMF program, Ghana has implemented significant fiscal and monetary reforms. Despite these difficulties, Ghana’s long-term economic fundamentals remain strong, with the World Bank projecting 4.8% growth in 2025 as inflation moderates and macroeconomic stability returns.

Africa’s common challenges persist: uneven regional development (Ghana’s northern regions remain significantly poorer than coastal areas); inequality (Ghana’s Gini coefficient stands at 43.5%); infrastructure gaps (Ghana faces an annual infrastructure financing gap of approximately $1.5 billion); and weak public governance (though Ghana ranks higher than regional averages in transparency indexes). However, these challenges increasingly coexist with vibrant innovation ecosystems and digital transformation.

Business Opportunities in Africa: Ghana’s Position

Africa’s diversity remains its defining characteristic, with 54 countries at varying development stages. Ghana occupies a strategic middle ground – neither the continent’s largest economy (Nigeria) nor its most advanced (South Africa, Mauritius), but a stable democracy with relatively strong institutions that has positioned itself as West Africa’s business and diplomatic hub.

The perception of Africa as primarily resource-driven is becoming outdated. While natural resources and agriculture contribute significantly to Ghana’s economy (gold, cocoa, and oil account for over 80% of export revenues), the services sector now constitutes approximately 47% of Ghana’s GDP. Financial services, telecommunications, and retail have shown particular dynamism, with mobile money transactions in Ghana reaching 978.3 billion cedis (approximately $71.4 billion) in 2023 according to Bank of Ghana data.

Africa’s consumer market continues to evolve rapidly. Ghana’s middle class has expanded to approximately 29% of the population according to AfDB definitions, though recent economic challenges have placed pressure on household purchasing power. The digital transformation has accelerated dramatically, with Ghana’s mobile penetration exceeding 140% (multiple SIM ownership is common) and internet penetration reaching 59% in 2023 according to the Ghana Statistical Service.

The payment landscape exemplifies Africa’s technological leapfrogging. Ghana’s interoperability framework, which allows seamless transfers between mobile money providers and traditional bank accounts, processes over 5 million daily transactions. The Ghana.gov payment platform has digitized 90% of government services payments, reducing corruption opportunities and improving efficiency.

Navigating Business Challenges in Ghana and Africa

The business environment in Ghana and broader Africa remains complex though significantly improved. Contract enforcement challenges persist, with commercial cases in Ghana’s courts taking an average of 710 days according to World Bank data. Infrastructure gaps, particularly in electricity reliability and transportation networks, increase operating costs. The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Secretariat’s presence in Accra symbolizes Ghana’s commitment to addressing these regional challenges through integration.

Workforce development shows mixed progress. Ghana’s education system produces over 100,000 tertiary graduates annually, but employers report skills mismatches. The government’s “Year of Skills” initiative in 2023 and TVET (Technical and Vocational Education and Training) investments aim to address these gaps, particularly in sectors like manufacturing and information technology.

For entrepreneurs, access to finance remains challenging with lending rates in Ghana exceeding 30% in 2023 despite policy efforts. However, the venture capital ecosystem has developed significantly, with Ghanaian startups raising $40 million in 2023 according to Africa: The Big Deal, a platform tracking African VC investments.

Despite these challenges, success stories abound. Fan Milk (part of Danone) has operated profitably in Ghana for over 60 years, with a nationwide distribution network reaching the smallest communities. Ghana’s indigenous Kasapreko Company has transformed from a small spirits producer to a beverage conglomerate competing effectively against multinationals across West Africa.

Understanding local consumer preferences remains crucial. Jumia, often described as “Africa’s Amazon,” struggled until it adapted its business model to local payment preferences, integrating mobile money and cash-on-delivery options. Similarly, Max.ng, a Nigerian mobility company that expanded to Ghana, modified its offering to accommodate local transportation patterns and regulatory requirements.

Strategic Approaches for Emerging Markets

Ghana’s position between larger markets (Nigeria) and smaller neighbors (Togo, Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire) offers strategic advantages. Many companies use Ghana as a regional hub, taking advantage of its relative political stability, stronger institutions, and English-language advantage. For example, Google established its first Africa AI research center in Accra, reflecting this strategic positioning.

Companies succeeding in Ghana often adopt tiered approaches that recognize income disparities. Fan Milk offers products at multiple price points, from premium ice cream in urban supermarkets to small single-serve frozen yogurt sachets sold by street vendors. Similarly, telecommunications provider MTN offers service packages ranging from basic USSD feature-phone offerings to advanced smartphone plans.

“Glocalization” is increasingly essential. KFC has expanded to over 20 locations in Ghana by balancing its global brand with local adaptations, including jollof rice sides and chili pepper options calibrated to Ghanaian tastes. Guinness produces locally-inspired variations like its Ghana-specific Guinness Smooth, which is tailored to local preferences while maintaining brand recognition.

Innovation increasingly flows from Africa to global markets. Ghana’s fintech innovations in mobile money have influenced global payment systems. M-KOPA, which pioneered the pay-as-you-go solar model in Kenya, has successfully expanded to Ghana by adapting its offering to local energy needs and payment behaviors, and its model is now being studied globally for financing climate-friendly technologies.

Ghana’s Strategic Sectors

Several sectors demonstrate particular promise in Ghana’s economy:

Digital Economy: Ghana’s digital ecosystem has matured significantly, with the government’s Digital Ghana Agenda driving transformation. Mobile money users exceed 19 million, creating opportunities for embedded financial services. Indigenous fintechs like Zeepay and IT Consortium have expanded regionally, while international players like Flutterwave have established significant operations in Ghana.

Agriculture and Food Processing: Ghana’s cocoa sector remains strategically important, with the Ghana Cocoa Board implementing a $600 million productivity enhancement program. However, value addition is increasingly emphasized, with local processing by both multinationals (Barry Callebaut) and local companies (Niche Cocoa). Beyond cocoa, commercial agriculture has expanded in Ghana’s northern regions, with companies like Wienco and RMG Concept developing integrated models including financing, inputs, and guaranteed markets for smallholders.

Renewable Energy: Ghana aims to achieve 10% renewable energy in its mix by 2030. The Bui Power Authority has complemented its hydroelectric dam with Ghana’s largest solar installation (50MW), with plans to expand to 250MW. Private developers like Axcon Energy and electricity distributor ECG have partnered on additional solar projects, while companies like PEG Africa have developed successful pay-as-you-go solar home systems for off-grid communities.

Manufacturing: Ghana’s ambition to become a manufacturing hub faces challenges from high electricity costs and regional competition, but strategic subsectors are emerging. Volkswagen established an assembly operation in 2020, while pharmaceutical manufacturing has grown with companies like Ernest Chemists and Tobinco expanding production capacity to serve both domestic and regional markets under AfCFTA.

Conclusion

Ghana exemplifies Africa’s complex but promising economic landscape. While challenges remain in infrastructure, governance, and economic stability, significant opportunities exist for companies that develop nuanced, market-specific strategies. Success requires understanding local contexts, leveraging Ghana’s increasingly educated workforce and growing digital ecosystem, and positioning for regional opportunities through AfCFTA.

Companies entering Ghana benefit from a relatively stable political environment and improving business climate, with the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre serving as a one-stop shop for investors. As President Akufo-Addo’s “Ghana Beyond Aid” vision indicates, the country seeks partners rather than patrons, emphasizing mutually beneficial relationships over traditional aid models.

The opportunities in Ghana and broader Africa demand approaches that balance short-term adaptability with long-term commitment. Those who engage meaningfully with local partners, develop Ghana-specific strategies while leveraging regional opportunities, and embrace the continent’s dynamic transformation will find substantial returns on their investments in what remains the world’s last major growth frontier.

I cook with menstrual blood to make my husband love me, but he’s getting worse

File photo of a worried woman File photo of a worried woman

Dear GhanaWeb,

I’ve been married for four years, and throughout this time, my husband has consistently been unfaithful. I do everything I can to fulfill my role as a wife, but nothing seems to make a difference.

He doesn’t listen to me, and he acts as though he no longer loves me, even though he chose to marry me out of his own free will.

I’ve been trying so hard since the beginning of this year to make my husband listen to me, so every month I cook with my menses for him to eat, yet there’s no result.

I’ve tried repeatedly, almost every month from last year until now, but nothing seems to be working. I don’t want to resort to any fetish or spiritual practices; I just wanted to try using my menses, but even that hasn’t worked.

My husband is still constantly cheating, and it’s made him completely irresponsible. I’m left struggling to take care of our child on my own.

He has the means to support our family comfortably, so much so that I wouldn’t even need to work, but instead, he spends all his money on other women.

I know this might not be the right way, but what else can I do? I’m truly suffering. My husband has everything it takes to make me and our daughter happy, yet he chooses to spend it all on other women.

I have to beg him just to leave a little money at home. On weekends, once he moves his car, he doesn’t come back until midnight, and he’s always drunk.

People even send me calls and videos showing him out with different women. It’s humiliating and heartbreaking.

This whole situation is exhausting. I just want to humble him, to bring him back to his senses so I can finally enjoy my marriage.

I don’t want a divorce; I’m still trying and hoping this “menses” method will work for me too, but so far, it hasn’t.

Is there anything else I can do?

I’ve heard that some women use their menses to cook for their husbands to get them to listen or become more submissive, how exactly do they do it?

In my case, it seems to have backfired. Instead of drawing him closer, he has become even more arrogant and continues to cheat.

What am I doing wrong? Why am I the one suffering like this? I’m desperate and I really need help.

The growing trade of gold buying shops at Wassa Akropong is fuelling the galamsey menace play videoThe growing trade of gold buying shops at Wassa Akropong is fuelling the galamsey menace

Conversations surrounding Ghana’s illegal mining (galamsey) menace have, for the longest periods, been centered around the destruction of the land, and very recently, on how the introduction of heavy equipment like excavators have led to major water bodies being desecrated.

But GhanaWeb found out something even more disturbing at Wassa Akropong, one of the communities well-known for galamsey activities in the Western Region.

Far more disturbing than the destruction of land and water bodies, is what is a market that appears to be fuelling the continuous, bold moves of young men and women to repeatedly return to the earth to dig it up for gold.

The story of the over 100 gold buying shops alone at Wassa Akropong that is silently fuelling this growing menace has been unearthed and GhanaWeb will premiere the full details of this investigative documentary on Tuesday, June 24, 2025.

You will also hear about the intricate parts that women – both young and old, play in this worrying environmental terrorism.

The historic Osu Castle in Accra became the vibrant backdrop for a special celebration of peace, unity, and wellness as Ghana and India came together to mark the 11th International Day of Yoga.

Dignitaries, yoga practitioners, and citizens gathered to honor the ancient practice, reinforcing its timeless role in fostering physical, mental, and emotional well-being.

The event featured a series of speeches, performances, and yoga sessions, all aimed at highlighting the universal relevance of yoga.

India’s High Commissioner to Ghana, Manish Gupta, kicked off the proceedings with a heartfelt message on yoga’s global significance.

He explained that yoga transcends physical exercise; it is a journey of self-discovery and balance. Drawing a comparison to a finely tuned musical instrument, he emphasised that the body, like such instruments, requires precision and harmony to perform at its best.

Gupta also expressed his appreciation for the overwhelming support from the Ghanaian community, regional authorities, and local yoga organizations.

He highlighted the nationwide yoga events that took place over the past month in cities such as Cape Coast, Kumasi, Tamale, and Ho, thanks to collaboration with key yoga institutions.

In her keynote address, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts, shared a deeply personal story about her late father, whose devotion to yoga she believes contributed to his remarkable longevity of 106 years.

“Maybe yoga gave him those extra years,” she said, reflecting on her father’s practice. With humor, she added, “I used to enjoy watching him stand on his head… and now I’ve just seen it happen here too,” drawing laughter from the audience.

Gomashie also celebrated the shared cultural values between Ghana and India, noting how both nations are committed to spiritual growth, cultural richness, and the pursuit of peace and progress.

“As we gather today to celebrate this ancient Indian practice, let us reflect on the deep values we share with India—values that have shaped our cultures and continue to guide us toward a future of unity,” she said.

The event was also attended by Kofi Iddie Adams, Minister of Sports and Recreation and Member of Parliament for the Buem Constituency in the Oti Region, alongside yoga enthusiasts from across the country.

Sylvester Mensah Turns EximBank into Family Property – NPP PK Sarpong Alleges

0

On Monday, June 23, 2025, prominent NPP-affiliated political commentator and writer, P.K. Sarpong, made a startling post on his official Facebook page, alleging that Sylvester Mensah, the current Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Export-Import Bank (Ghana EximBank), is managing the institution as though it were his personal or family property.

According to Sarpong, one of the most shocking revelations is that cooked meals prepared for the staff of Ghana EximBank are reportedly being diverted to the home of Mr. Mensah’s daughter-in-law. “How on earth can a public official in such a sensitive position behave in this manner, and nobody is holding him accountable?” Sarpong questioned, expressing frustration over what he sees as growing impunity.

The outspoken commentator did not mince words in his criticism. He alleged that Sylvester Mensah has transformed the state institution into a playground for his family and cronies, a trend he described as dangerous and unacceptable in a functioning democracy. “Is EximBank now a family kitchen?” he asked rhetorically, insisting that such behavior reflects a gross abuse of public office and resources.

Sarpong’s post has since gone viral, sparking heated discussions across various social media platforms. While some have called for immediate investigations into the allegations, others argue that such issues highlight a broader trend of political appointees placing their personal interests above national development goals.

Many are now calling on civil society groups, the media, and Parliament to probe the matter thoroughly and hold those involved accountable. The silence from oversight bodies, Sarpong noted, is deafening and only encourages further abuse of power.

As public trust in state institutions continues to erode, these allegations—if true—could further damage the credibility of Ghana EximBank and the government’s anti-corruption posture.

Israel-Iran war: Fuel prices likely to rise in July

0

The Chamber of Petroleum Consumers (COPEC) has warned that rising tensions in the Middle East could lead to an increase in fuel prices during the first pricing window of July.

According to COPEC, the ongoing conflict between Iran and Israel — intensified by recent U.S. airstrikes on three Iranian nuclear sites — is likely to have severe implications for global oil supply and, by extension, for fuel-importing countries like Ghana.

The possibility of Iran closing the Strait of Hormuz, a critical passage through which about 20% of the world’s oil and gas is transported, has raised concerns of further disruptions in supply and price volatility.

Speaking to Citi Business News, Executive Secretary of COPEC, Duncan Amoah, expressed concern over the potential ripple effects on crude oil prices.

COPEC is urging consumers to brace for possible increases and is calling on policymakers to monitor global developments closely and adopt mitigation strategies to cushion the effects on Ghanaians.

“This week is likely to see a lot of activity on the international front as far as fuel pricing or petroleum pricing is concerned and Ghana clearly cannot be excused that possibility of paying more for fuel. What I see happening locally is that the BDCs may take a cue knowing well that it is riskier landing cargo than it was a week before due to the tensions on the strait and so I will not be surprised that in the course of the week some BDCs will adjust their prices upwards and once that happens some of the OMCs will clearly have to follow because they buy directly from the BDCs,” he said.

While the second pricing window of June provided relief for consumers, Duncan Amoah, does not expect the trend to continue into the first pricing window of July.

“Anytime crude oil prices go up, the net effect on prices of finished petroleum products is usually felt between 5-7 days and I am sure this new week prices globally as far as Platt is concerned would not come funny and so whatever the oil marketing companies should decide for the first window July to do…will probably need to be justified but I do think that clearly Ghanaians should expect upward adjustment in fuel prices due to the geopolitical across the Middle East,” he added.

He has also commended government for the decision to suspend the proposed GH¢1 increment under the Energy Sector Shortfall and Debt Repayment Levy (ESSDRL).

The executive secretary of COPEC is also asking government to get the Tema Oil refinery back on its feet even as management of TOR says it is on track to resume full operations by October 2025.

Religious Politics Is Dangerous For NPP …Bawumia Tells Opponents

0

Former Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has sounded a strong caution to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) against what he described as the dangerous infiltration of tribal and religious politics in the party’s internal campaigns.

His comments come in the wake of increasing intra-party tensions ahead of the selection of the NPP’s 2028 Presidential Candidate, expected early next year.

Iran cannot unilaterally shut Strait of Hormuz – NPA boss

0

National Petroleum Authority (NPA) Chief Executive Officer Godwin Edudzi Tamakloe has offered a calming perspective amidst escalating Middle East tensions, asserting that Iran would face overwhelming international opposition if it attempted to close the vital Strait of Hormuz unilaterally.

Mr Tamakloe emphasised the significant geopolitical and economic interests at stake, suggesting a full-scale closure is highly improbable.

Iran vowed a decisive response, with its parliament backing a measure to close the critical shipping route in response to U.S. airstrikes on nuclear sites in Iran over the weekend.

The Strait of Hormuz, located between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, is particularly important because it provides the only sea passage from the Persian Gulf to the open ocean for the supply of huge volumes of oil produced in that region to several parts of the world.

The Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime chokepoint, is geographically bordered by Iran on one side and Oman on the other.

READ ALSO: NPP race: I’m not here to test the waters; I’m here for power – Bryan Acheampong

Nearly 20 million barrels of oil, about one-fifth of daily global production, flow through the strait every day, according to the US Energy Information Administration (EIA).

For Mr Tamakloe, there are too many interests at stake, and he believes Iran cannot solely decide to block the passage.

“Notice that Oman is on one side, and Iran is on the other side. So Oman will not permit it because it is income to those countries because the ships and others pay for the use of that end,” he explained to TV3 on Monday, June 23.

This financial incentive for passage, derived from tolls and services, aligns Oman’s interests with global trade flow.

Oman’s foreign policy is generally characterised by neutrality and mediation, further reducing the likelihood of its cooperation in any blockade.

Beyond regional players, Mr Tamakloe pointed to the immense global stakes, particularly for major economic powers.

“And so what is going to happen is that Oman is not going to allow for a unilateral decision to just close that end completely again, like I pointed out, the Chinese had a lot of interest in terms of movements of goods and other services, or, eh, movements of goods more or less to the Chinese and other South Asian countries. And so they also have an interest in ensuring that the passage is not closed,” he said during a discussion on TV3 on Monday, June 23.

China, as the world’s largest crude oil importer, relies heavily on this route, with roughly one-third of its oil imports originating from Gulf producers and 80% of flows through Hormuz destined for Asian markets.

“More importantly, the Europeans as well, because then beyond crude it’s easier for you to move liquefied natural gas and others into Europe to power households and others around our corridor, so completely; having it closed will be quite uninteresting,” Mr Tamakloe added.

Following sanctions on Russian energy, Europe significantly increased its reliance on Middle Eastern diesel, with approximately 850,000 barrels per day now transiting through the Strait of Hormuz to the continent. This shift makes Europe highly vulnerable to any disruption.

Mr Tamakloe also revealed that he closely monitored an emergency UN Security Council meeting held on Saturday evening.

“On Saturday evening, there was an emergency UN Security Council meeting; that’s right, I observed it because my mind is on these matters in recent times. From the US security council meeting, it does appear that there’s a greater call for diplomatic intervention than a full-blown, full-scale war within the region.”

He expressed optimism that regional actors are leaning towards de-escalation rather than military confrontation.

“Thankfully, Oman, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and co., within the region appear to have adopted a strategy for less military intervention.”

The NPA boss cautioned that the real danger to global oil supplies would arise if the entire Gulf region were to be engulfed in war, thereby affecting oil production itself.

“The danger is if the whole Gulf region is engulfed in war, then production itself will be affected. Now, if production itself is affected, that is when the problem will become much more serious.”

Despite the underlying risks, Mr Tamakloe remains confident that diplomacy will prevail.

“So at this point, all we can pray for is the key leaders within the region to come together to de-escalate the current conflict and more or less find a more diplomatic solution to it. And I’m very confident that this one, there’s a higher possibility of it coming closer or down than what we are seeing, say, like Russia, Ukraine.”

Ghana, as a net oil importer, is particularly sensitive to global oil price fluctuations.

However, Mr Tamakloe previously assured the nation that Ghana maintains robust fuel reserves, with over 200 million litres of petrol and 150 million litres of diesel, sufficient to last beyond two months and mitigate immediate supply disruptions.

Dr. Likee Defends Team Amidst Fraud Allegations: “Even Children in My Camp Earn $1,000 Monthly on YT

Popular Ghanaian comedian and actor Dr. Likee, known for his transition from Kumawood “villain” roles to viral YouTube skits, has spoken out following widespread allegations linking members of his team to fraudulent activities.

These accusations surfaced in the wake of the recent FBI arrest of Ghanaian businessman Kofi Boat, sparking online speculation that some individuals from Breman UGC — reportedly associated with Dr. Likee — might also be involved in scams.

However, speaking during an appearance on UTV, Dr. Likee categorically denied any wrongdoing by his team. He emphasized that neither he nor anyone from his camp engages in fraudulent practices.

“There’s no truth in those rumors. We do honest work,” he asserted.

“Even a child from my camp earns no less than $1,000 monthly from YouTube,” he disclosed.

Dr. Likee also expressed confidence in the integrity of Kofi Boat, saying, “I know Kofi Boat personally. He’s not a scammer,” while calling on Ghanaians to avoid jumping to conclusions.

Abronye Reacts To NPP NEC Warning, Drops A Major Truth Bomb

0

Tensions within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have escalated as Kennedy Agyapong, a prominent Member of Parliament, publicly criticized the party’s approach to its upcoming presidential primary scheduled for January 31, 2026. Agyapong’s outspoken remarks have drawn sharp reactions, including a rebuke from Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye, the NPP Bono Regional Chairman, and a stern warning from the National Executive Committee (NEC).

Agyapong, speaking at a recent event, expressed frustration with what he perceives as an unfair process in selecting the party’s presidential candidate. He accused the NPP leadership of making decisions that favor a select few, warning that such actions could alienate voters and jeopardize the party’s chances in the 2028 general elections. “The power belongs to all of us, not one person’s ambition,” Agyapong stated, urging for fairness and unity. He referenced Plato’s philosophy, cautioning against a system where “justice is in the interest of the strongest,” and called for democratic principles to guide the party’s actions. The MP highlighted voter apathy in past elections, noting that over 1.7 million people in NPP strongholds, particularly in five or six key regions, did not vote in previous polls. Agyapong suggested that internal decisions, including the selection of candidates, contributed to this turnout issue. He also raised concerns about religious dynamics, pointing out that some Christian voters were reluctant to support Muslim candidates, a factor he believes affected the party’s performance in Muslim-dominated areas like the Zongo communities.

Abronye, in response, criticized Agyapong for his comments, accusing him of undermining party unity. The NEC issued a final warning to Agyapong, urging him to refrain from divisive rhetoric. Despite the warning, Agyapong remained defiant, stating, “Nobody can stop me,” and emphasized the need for transparent leadership selection processes.

The controversy comes as the NPP prepares for its national delegate conference, where constituency and polling station executives, alongside electoral area coordinators, will play a critical role in shaping the party’s strategy. Political analysts warn that unresolved internal conflicts could weaken the NPP’s cohesion, potentially impacting its performance in the 2028 elections.

Ghana’s KOKA Petitions US Embassy Over Rapper Chris Waddle’s Wealth

Koka And Criss Waddle

Ghanaian personality Kwaku Osei Korankye Asiedu, known as KOKA, has formally requested the United States Embassy in Accra to investigate the source of rapper Chris Waddle’s wealth.

KOKA announced his intention to petition US authorities, specifically suggesting the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) examine Waddle’s finances and business dealings, questioning the sustainability of his lifestyle through music earnings alone.

KOKA made these statements during an appearance on Starr FM’s “Starr Showbiz with Feeling Daddy” on June 21. He attributed his actions to what he described as repeated, unwarranted social media attacks by Waddle directed at both himself and former Ghanaian President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. “Chris Waddle has become a social commentator. He publicly ridiculed Nana Addo and his governance. Early this year, twice, Chris Waddle attacked and insulted me on Twitter (X),” KOKA stated during the broadcast. He directly challenged the rapper’s finances, adding, “I am questioning your wealth because you did music. The music cannot give you the amount of money you have and the cars you drive.”

KOKA vowed to maintain pressure on the issue. “I’m saying, till I rest, I will make noise. I’m going to write to the American Embassy. I will make noise till they get to his turn,” he declared. He further justified his stance by questioning the fairness of investigations, implying that Waddle should not be exempt from scrutiny given his criticisms: “Wherever the FBI is – if they don’t arrest him – then the ones they’ve arrested, I question it. Was he fair to my government? Was he fair to my personality? No. So nobody should question me about it.”

Chris Waddle, recognized for his musical work including the song “Ayi” and various business activities, has not publicly responded to KOKA’s allegations or the threatened petition. This development coincides with confirmed collaborations between US and Ghanaian authorities on ongoing financial and cybercrime investigations within the country.

Keep your campaign away from Zongo Communities – Youth group tells Ken Agyapong

0

The Zongo Youth Movement, a Muslim advocacy group, has issued a strong caution to New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful Kennedy Agyapong, urging him to keep his campaign away from Zongo and Muslim communities following controversial remarks attributed to a member of his campaign team.

The group is calling for a formal apology to the Muslim community and Ghanaians at large, emphasising that political campaigns must not undermine national unity or religious coexistence.

The concern stems from comments allegedly made by Dr. Stephen Amoah, popularly known as Sticka, suggesting that the NPP lost the 2024 elections due to the Islamic faith of former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

Speaking to Citi News, Public Relations Officer of the Zongo Youth Movement, Abdullai Ali, condemned the remarks as divisive and contrary to Ghana’s legacy of religious tolerance. He demanded a public apology from both Dr. Amoah and Kennedy Agyapong.

“It is not unfair to associate these remarks with Kennedy Agyapong’s camp. After the comments were made, no one from his team came forward to disown or condemn them. In fact, some members defended the claim on TV and radio using misleading data,” he stated.

Ali added that a clear dissociation by Agyapong from Dr. Amoah’s comments would have shifted accountability. “If Kennedy Agyapong had issued a statement distancing himself from the remarks, we would have focused only on Dr. Amoah. But the silence from his camp speaks volumes.”

Ghana’s Tema Oil Refinery Targets October 2025 Restart to Cut Imports

Tema Oil Refinery

Ghana’s state-owned Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) aims to resume full operations by October 2025, according to its Acting Managing Director, Edmund Kombat.

Appearing before Parliament’s Energy Committee, Kombat stated this restart could significantly reduce the nation’s reliance on imported refined petroleum products, potentially saving Ghana up to $400 million monthly.

Kombat informed lawmakers that the refinery, dormant since 2021 due to a lack of crude oil supply, is being revived through strategic interventions. He said TOR is targeting the capacity to refine up to 60% of the country’s crude oil needs upon its full return to operation.

However, Kombat acknowledged a significant governance lapse, confirming that TOR’s financial accounts have not been audited since 2019. He assured the committee that the audit process is now actively underway, with reports expected to be submitted to Parliament by the end of July 2025.

TOR has historically been viewed as a crucial asset within Ghana’s energy infrastructure. Its operations over recent years, however, have been consistently hampered by severe financial difficulties, recurring equipment breakdowns, and persistent governance concerns, challenges that the planned restart must now overcome to achieve its stated goals of import reduction and cost savings.

‘That was when I realized I was in opposition’ – Omari Wadie on vehicle seizure brouhaha

Michael Omari Wadie, a former NPP National Vice Chairman Michael Omari Wadie, a former NPP National Vice Chairman

Michael Omari Wadie, a former National Vice Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has spoken out about the seizure of his Lexus 507 vehicle by the Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) task force in January 2025.

According to Omari Wadie, the incident served as a personal eye-opener, making him realize that he was now in opposition.

He noted that when one’s party is in power and things are done right, certain benefits and privileges are enjoyed—but those vanish when power changes hands.

Speaking in an interview on Asaase PA on June 19, 2025, he recounted how the vehicle was taken into custody by the ORAL team.

He explained that following the seizure, he decided to voluntarily take another newly acquired vehicle directly to the police station for inspection, without even driving it home.

“I had just gotten another car, and after what happened with the first one, I decided not to take any chances. I took it directly to the police station for them to conduct their checks,” he said.

However, days later, when he returned to retrieve the vehicle, he was informed that it was still under investigation and could not be released.

“I thought they would have completed all the necessary checks, but they told me the car I brought in voluntarily was still being investigated. That was when it really dawned on me that I was in opposition,” he remarked.

Omari Wadie admitted that the experience frustrated him to the point that he avoided the station for about three weeks. Eventually, he received a call from the police informing him that he could come for the vehicle, as it was occupying space at the station.

“I was so upset. I told them to bring the car to me instead,” he added.

The ORAL team returned the first vehicle just a few days after it had been taken into custody.

I Am Not Politically Neutral; I Voted for Akufo-Addo in 2016 – Manasseh Azure Awuni

News Hub Creator17min

Investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni has revealed that he is not politically neutral, disclosing that he voted for Akufo-Addo in the 2016 elections.

According to Manasseh Azure, he had also voted for John Dramani Mahama in the 2012 election, but he believe —and still believe today —that he did not deserve his vote in 2016. Manasseh Azure was quick to add that John Mahama appears to have learnt some great lessons in the wilderness of opposition.

The Investigative journalist revealed that , he started in his book called The President Ghana Never Got, that he will not vote in the 2024 election.

He continued that he explained in that same book that an NPP victory in 2024 would send a dangerous signal about our democracy, that a party could kill and still be retained in office to continue killing with impunity. An NPP defeat could ensure some semblance of accountability. Thankfully, many Ghanaians agreed with him.

Until a better and serious alternative emerges in 2028, I may have to choose between the NPP and the NDC. If what John Mahama has done so far as president continues, and if he were to contest again, I wouldn’t have a difficulty choosing who to vote for in 2028.

But John Mahama will not contest. And high are the chances that the government will mess up at some point. Besides, the rumours I hear from the NDC’s camp about Mahama’s possible successor don’t inspire hope.” Mannaseh Azure added.

He also explained that he prefers Dr. Bawumia to lead the NPP because he is the best candidate among all the contestants who have emerged in the party.

Agriculture in Focus: A call for sector-wide revitalisation

0

The agricultural sector took centre stage in Ghana’s economic and policy discourse through two key public events, the Citi Business Forum and Channel One TV’s AgriFair and a significant international investment announcement supporting the cocoa sector.

From upstream production to downstream processing and market access, there was a shift from narrow interventions to full value chain thinking. The Citi Business Forum and Channel One TV’s AgriFair both provided platforms for multi-stakeholder discussions around agriculture, conversations centred on boosting productivity through better inputs, mechanization, and extension services, improving credit access by de-risking the sector for financial institutions, increasing public and private financing, particularly for agribusinesses and post-harvest infrastructure, promoting agro-processing and value addition, to reduce post-harvest losses and enhance export potential, strengthening agriculture research and extension, which remain weak links in Ghana’s productivity challenge and facilitating better marketing and distribution systems.

Collectively, these discussions reflected a shift: agriculture was being treated less as a rural welfare issue and more as a strategic sector for job creation, industrialisation, and trade competitiveness. Despite agriculture’s importance to Ghana’s GDP, the sector continues to receive less than 5% of formal banking sector credit. Even more striking, from 2018 to 2024, agriculture attracted an average of less than 2% of total Foreign Direct Investment (FDI). These numbers highlight a structural underinvestment in the sector, despite years of policy pronouncements. The Citi Forum and AgriFair was right in framing the issue holistically, from input supply and research through processing, marketing, and exports. That’s the thinking Ghana needs if the sector is to become both commercially viable and socially transformative. But these ideas must move beyond forum panels. They need to be codified into sustained national policy with cross-ministerial coordination, better budget prioritization, and active support for agro-industrial ecosystems.

Alongside the broader policy conversations on agriculture, there was a significant development in Ghana’s cocoa sector. The International Finance Corporation (IFC) and Societe Generale Ghana (SG Ghana) announced a $40 million facility aimed at expanding access to finance within the cocoa value chain. The risk-sharing facility is expected to unlock up to $80 million in financing for Licensed Buying Companies (LBCs) to purchase cocoa directly from farmers, with the overall target of reaching 75,000 smallholder farmers and facilitating more sustainable, traceable cocoa trade over the next four years.

This is a positive intervention. One of the recurring challenges raised in Ghana’s agricultural sector is the difficulty of accessing finance, especially for actors along the value chain. Support of this nature can ease seasonal liquidity constraints, strengthen LBCs, and potentially improve cashflow to farmers. However, financing alone won’t be enough. The state of Ghana’s cocoa sector today reflects multiple, overlapping challenges that must also be addressed. Farmer morale is low, the average cocoa farmer is over 45 years old, and only 4% of farmers are under 35. Many younger people are unwilling to go into cocoa farming due to low returns, high input costs, and growing competition from illegal mining and urban alternatives. Farming lands are under threat. The steady encroachment of illegal mining (galamsey) is shrinking the land available for cocoa cultivation and degrading its productivity. Without stronger land governance and community protections, the production base of Ghana’s cocoa sector will continue to erode. Local processors are struggling to get beans.

As Bright Simons has highlighted , Ghana’s processing capacity is underutilized; some factories operate at just 10–40% of capacity, and others have had to import cocoa just to stay running. This is due to the fact that cocoa supplies are tightly controlled, with COCOBOD prioritizing forward exports to earn foreign exchange. While understandable, this trade model often leaves local processors and chocolate makers without access to raw materials, undermining Ghana’s goal of boosting domestic value addition. These challenges are not separate from the financing agenda, they are what shape whether financing will be impactful or not. If farmers are leaving the sector, lands are being lost to mining, and processors can’t get reliable supply, then improving access to credit, while necessary, will only treat one piece of a much larger puzzle.

This is why the cocoa sector must be considered within the larger vision of agricultural revitalisation that was echoed throughout the Citi Business Foru. Improvingg production is not enough. The entire agricultural value chain, from research and inputs to finance, processing, marketing, and export must be strengthened in an integrated way. The $40 million partnership with IFC and SG Ghana can support that effort. But it must be matched by policy reforms that make local cocoa sourcing more predictable, pricing and contract mechanisms that allow both farmers and processors to benefit from high global prices, and youth strategies that protect cocoa-growing areas and attract new farmers into the sector.

Crowd left stunned after bare knuckle fighter kisses opponent during face off

0

Former UFC fighter Mariya Apagova kissed her opponent Jessica Eye during their BKFC 76 pre-fight face off.

Eye, a 27-fight MMA veteran, is making her bare-knuckle debut against fellow octagon veteran Agapova in Fort Worth, Texas, this evening.

Former UFC title contender Eye retired from competition back in 2022 after suffering her fourth consecutive defeat, but is set to take on Apagova in a bare knuckle bout.

And during their face off Apagova planted a non-consensual kiss on the lips of her opponent, that saw a stunned Eye retort with: “That was f***ing weird.”

After the incident Apagova vented her frustration on Instagram.

“So now that I’ve got to bleach my lips from those nasty f*cking lips that touched me, I mean, ew, ew,” Eye said in her Instagram story. “It’s f*cking weird. I mean, we’re fighters.

“We’re supposed to face off like that. But you don’t kiss me, weirdo. You’re weird. It ain’t going to take me out of my game. It’s just going to make me beat your ass more.”

The No.1 ranked Tony Soto headlines the evening against unranked Ben ‘The Bomber’ Bonner in a non-title lightweight clash.

Due to visa issues, Franco Tenaglia was unable to travel to the United States and defend his BKFC Lightweight World Title against Soto, which was the previously announced main event.

While it may not be a title fight Soto will have hoped for at the end of 2024, it’s a chance for Soto to cement his status as a top lightweight challenger.

Bonner most recently dispatched Lewis Keen in a first round stoppage that went viral.

Customs cautions public against bringing vehicles without manifest to Ghana

0

The Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), Tema Sector, has issued a strong warning to importers to desist from bringing unmanifested vehicles into the country through the port.

Assistant Commissioner Theresa Potakey, Customs Tema Sector Commander, described the practice as unacceptable and warned that offenders would face penalties.

Speaking during the Division’s first Joint Consultative Committee meeting—held to deliberate on sector concerns and review port operations from the previous year—Assistant Commissioner Potakey noted a troubling trend, particularly at the Meridian Ports Services (MPS) Terminal Three.

“We’ve observed that some importers are bringing in unmanifested vehicles—vehicles not listed on the manifest or the bill of lading. They are hidden; and when we open the containers, it is clear the intention is to evade taxes. This is unacceptable,” she stated.

She revealed that Customs had been seizing such vehicles and cautioned the public that scanners at the port would detect them.

“Importers found guilty are currently made to pay a penalty for restoration. However, I intend to recommend to the Commissioner of Customs and the Commissioner-General of the GRA that these penalties be doubled to serve as a stronger deterrent,” she added.

Assistant Commissioner Potakey further questioned the legitimacy of such imports, suggesting they may be stolen vehicles. “Why are you bringing in a vehicle and refusing to declare it on the bill of lading? How do you intend to register it once it gets out?” she asked.

A manifest is a detailed document listing all cargo on board a vessel for a specific voyage. Customs rely on it to verify shipments, assess duties, and ensure compliance with import and export regulations.

The Customs Division has reaffirmed its commitment to clamping down on tax evasion and ensuring transparency and accountability at Ghana’s ports.

Every baby in the UK to receive DNA testing

0

Every baby in the UK will have their DNA tested under a new 10-year plan for the NHS.

The whole-genome sequencing will screen for hundreds of diseases and allow people to “leapfrog” killer illnesses, according to the Health Secretary, Wes Streeting.

Speaking to the Telegraph, he revealed plans to move the NHS towards a model of sickness prevention rather than treatment.

Personalised medicine, made possible through things like DNA testing, will form a big part of that plan, with £650m pledged to genomics research by the government.

“The revolution in medical science means that we can transform the NHS over the coming decade, from a service which diagnoses and treats ill health to one that predicts and prevents it,” said Mr Streeting in a statement.

“Genomics presents us with the opportunity to leapfrog disease, so we’re in front of it rather than reacting to it.”

The upcoming Life Sciences Sector Plan will be published in early July.

Newborns are currently offered a blood test when they are around five days old to check for nine rare but serious conditions.

In those blood spot tests, the baby’s heel is pricked to collect a few drops of blood on a card, but with whole genome sequencing, blood samples are typically taken from the umbilical cord shortly after birth.

In the past, Mr Streeting has spoken about his desire to make the NHS more preventative, in order to reduce rates of serious illness and save money.

Technologies like artificial intelligence will be used by the health service to predict illness and allow treatment or medication to be offered much earlier.

“With the power of this new technology, patients will be able to receive personalised healthcare to prevent ill health before symptoms begin, reducing the pressure on NHS services and helping people live longer, healthier lives,” said Mr Streeting.

Along with a greater focus on prevention, the Government’s 10-year plan is expected to include Mr Streeting’s two other “shifts” in the NHS: moving care away from hospitals to communities, and from analogue to digital services.

It follows Chancellor Rachel Reeves’ announcement that the Government would increase NHS funding by £29 billion per year in real terms over the next three years as it tries to cut waiting lists in line with its election promises.

Sampamanhene’s Gazette Process Endorsed by Bono House of Chiefs, Moves to National Stage

0

The Sampamanhene’s title was officially recognised by the National House of Chiefs, which was a big step in history. It had already been approved by the Bono Regional House of Chiefs. The High Court’s support for this development has made it even stronger. This shows legitimacy, authority, and long-awaited acceptance within Ghana’s traditional governance framework.

The steps that led to this point included careful legal research and paperwork, as well as months of discussions and meetings with stakeholders. After a careful examination of the Sampamanhene’s historical lineage and traditional validity, the Bono Regional House of Chiefs confirmed that the claim was valid and in line with Ghana’s Chieftaincy Act.

Clearing up the law has not only ended long-running disagreements in the community, but it has also created new chances for growth, unity, and traditional pride in the Sampaman Traditional Area. The fact that the High Court backed the process adds to the legitimacy of the decision and gives the traditional and customary ceremonies that created the chieftaincy an important legal seal.

The approval by the Bono House gives the Sampamanhene a say and a seat at the National House of Chiefs. This is an important group for running Ghana’s government, settling disputes, and preserving culture. People in charge of traditional affairs and public opinion all over the region have praised the move, saying it shows that traditional institutions are still important in modern law and government.

People in the area are happy and hopeful, and many of them think that this step will bring more development projects and attention to Sampaman. In some places, celebrations and thanksgiving events are already being planned because people see this as a win for the community’s history as a whole, not just for the present chief.

As the process goes on, and the National House of Chiefs is expected to make its final entry, all eyes will be on how the Sampamanhene’s leadership will lead the country to new heights of growth, unity, and participation in state organisations. Analysts say that this recognition could make it easier for traditional leaders and government agencies to work together, which would be good for peace and progress in the area for everyone.
