Emmanuel Nii Ashie Moore is the Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the NDC Emmanuel Nii Ashie Moore is the Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the NDC

The Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Emmanuel Nii Ashie Moore, has been sued by a Singaporean businessman, Toh You Kang, over an alleged $800,000 payment for failed Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) contracts.

Toh You Kang, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Director of NSG Group, in an application filed at the High Court in Accra, accused the NDC regional chairman of taking $800,000 for a cable-supply contract with the Electricity Company of Ghana that never materialised.

In the writ, sighted by GhanaWeb, the Singaporean businessman stated that he paid Ashie Moore $800,000 between 2023 and 2024 as part of an arrangement for an ECG contract allegedly secured by Moore, which was valued at millions of dollars.

You Kang also accused the NDC chairman of human rights abuses.

He claimed that he traveled to Ghana at the invitation of Ashie  Moore but was subjected to abuse, threats, and blackmail upon arrival.

According to him, the chairman deprived him of his liberty by using armed men and allegedly demanded $3 million for his release.

You Kang is therefore asking the court to declare that Ashie  Moore violated his rights and to order the repayment of the $800,000 made toward the ECG contract.

Below are the reliefs the businessman is seeking from the court:

a.  A declaration that the Respondent has violated the fundamental human rights of the Applicant.

b.  An order for the recovery of the sum of Eight Hundred Thousand Dollars (US$800,000) being the total sum paid by the Applicant to the Respondent towards the performance of ECG contracts purportedly secured by the Respondent for NSG Innovation Limited.

c.  An order directing the Respondent to pay to the Applicant the sum of Twenty Million Ghana Cedis (GH¢20,000,000) as compensation for the threats, physical assaults, humiliation, psychological distress, and the violation of the Applicant’s dignity occasioned by the unlawful, oppressive, and degrading conduct of the Respondent.

d.  General damages against the Respondent for violating the fundamental human rights of the Applicant.

e.  Costs, including legal fees.

f.  Any other relief(s) as this Honourable Court deems fit.

The court document also contains pictures of supposed correspondence between the two men.

“Ah, Edudzi, Where Did You Do Your Law Training?” – Lawyer Mocks CJ’s Legal Argument

0

Legal practitioner Edudzi Tamakloe has urged calm and respect for due process in the ongoing impeachment proceedings involving suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo as per reports from Myjoyonline on Saturday, June 28, 2025.

He emphasized the importance of maintaining the sanctity of the constitutional process, as tensions rise following public commentary on the matter.

Speaking on Joy News’ Newsfile, Tamakloe addressed growing misconceptions surrounding the impeachment procedures.

He explained that the Chief Justice was given an opportunity to respond to the petition, countering claims that the process was unfair. Tamakloe added that it is not mandatory for the petition itself to be tendered as evidence during the proceedings.

Drawing on his legal experience, he clarified that the petition’s role is merely to invoke jurisdiction, not serve as evidence.

“If I had made such proposition before her leadership while she was sitting [as CJ], she would have said, ‘Ah, Edudzi, where did you do your law training?’” he remarked.

His comments come in response to Justice Torkornoo’s recent press conference, where she criticized certain aspects of the process.

Tamakloe, however, believes that raising such concerns publicly could compromise the integrity of the proceedings.

He urged all parties to allow the process to take its full constitutional course.

According to him, President John Mahama also remains committed to upholding the constitutional path in such sensitive national matters.

While acknowledging the concerns expressed by the suspended Chief Justice, Tamakloe maintained that many of the procedures being questioned are, in fact, standard legal practices.

He reiterated the need for all stakeholders to allow the legal framework to function without external interference.

Ayariga defends 2.45% electricity tariff hike as necessary to save ECG

0

Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga has defended the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission’s (PURC) approval of a 2.45% increase in electricity tariffs, calling it a critical measure to address the rising debt of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

Speaking in Parliament on Friday, June 27, Mahama Ayariga explained that although economic indicators such as inflation, fuel prices, and exchange rate levels have remained relatively stable, ECG’s growing financial challenges make the tariff adjustment unavoidable.

“Last year, there was an attempt to block the PURC from adjusting tariffs, so no adjustments were made during that period. Now, ECG is burdened with significant debt. If we don’t act by adjusting tariffs, ECG will collapse. They won’t have the funds to procure inputs needed to keep generators running, and this will lead to power outages,” he cautioned.

His remarks were in response to concerns from the Minority Caucus, who questioned the justification for the tariff hike amidst perceived economic improvements.

Mahama Ayariga emphasized that consumers must bear part of the cost of electricity production.

“The bills must be paid. Improved macroeconomic indicators don’t erase ECG’s debt. The PURC is only doing its job, and part of the burden must be shouldered by consumers,” he stated.

He also announced that the Minister for Energy and Green Transition will appear before Parliament next week to provide further explanation on the tariff review and its implications.

The new tariff is set to take effect on July 1, 2025.

GHS Warns Public as Cases Hit 119 in Ghana

0

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has announced two new cases of Mpox, increasing the total number of recorded cases to 119 as of June 22, 2025 in Ghana.

GHS indicated in an update shared on its X page on Friday, June 27, 2025, that no deaths or hospital admissions have been reported in connection with the latest cases.

“2 new Mpox cases recorded, bringing the total to 119. No deaths or admissions have been reported,” the post read.

The GHS urged the public to minimise physical interactions with anyone showing Mpox symptoms.

“Symptoms of Mpox include fever, rash, headache and swollen glands. Protect yourself by avoiding close contact with anyone who has a rash,” it added.

Mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, is a viral infection caused by the monkeypox virus. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), the disease spreads primarily through close physical contact with someone who is infected. Transmission can occur through direct skin contact — including during sexual activity — as well as through mouth-to-mouth or mouth-to-skin contact, such as kissing.

The virus may also spread when individuals are in close proximity for extended periods, for example during conversations or when sharing enclosed spaces.

Kwame Poku seals QPR deal after a successful medicals

0

English EFL Championship side QPR have announced the arrival of Ghanaian forward Kwame Poku, who has joined the club from Peterborough United for an undisclosed fee.

The 23-year-old winger turned down numerous options to sign for the R’s, and he explained: “I feel like the project they’re building here excites me and I want to be part of taking QPR to that next level.

“There’s good players here and I think it’s exciting times for the club.”

Poku spoke with new head coach Julien Stéphan ahead of putting pen to paper, and he admitted: “When I was speaking to him he was talking about where he sees me fitting in and where he thinks I can influence the game.

“That’s what really attracted me. Being 23 turning 24, I’m not quite young anymore so I want to come in and make my mark from the jump.”

Poku spent two years with Colchester United in League Two between 2019 and 2021, and he believes his time there, as well as his four years with the Posh, were crucial to his development.

“I think it was a journey that needed to happen to get me to this stage right now,” he said. “It was about being resilient and trying to be in a position where I can just showcase my talent every day and be the best version of myself.”

During his time with Peterborough, Kwame developed a reputation for being an exciting prospect and now he wants to take the next step in his development.

He has already amassed more than 220 professional appearances despite his young age, something he is rightly proud of.

“I think that’s a big part of my journey, being so young and playing a lot of games,” he said.

“Going into this level, it’s just about learning about this level, getting used to it and then expressing myself.”

The Ghana international made 20 Championship appearances for Peterborough in 2019/20 so he knows what to expect – but he is demanding more from himself four years on.

“I think I had some good performances, good on the ball, I just think what separated then from now was the statistical side of it,” he said.

“Coming into this team where there’s a lot of good attacking players and good all-rounded players as well, I think I’ll create more chances, be at the end of a lot of chances and get more numbers.”

As he prepares for life with QPR, Poku added: “It’s a new experience and I’m looking forward to it.

“I just want to get as many numbers individually as possible, and with the team improve on where we were last season.

“That’s the main thing – carry on improving and see where it takes us.”

CEO Christian Nourry said: “Kwame is a player that the QPR recruitment department have been interested in for over four years.

“His decision to join the football club today in the face of interest from Europe-competing teams abroad and Championship teams with significantly bigger budgets than us is a fantastic validation of the direction we are moving in, including a specialised focus on individual player development.

“I wish Kwame all the very best success at QPR.

Inclusive, consultative appointment process will curb political animosity – Senyo Hosi on Asiedu Nketia’s criticism of EC

0

Senyo K. Hosi

Senyo Hosi, Convener of the One Ghana Movement, has echoed concerns raised by National Democratic Congress (NDC) Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia regarding the Electoral Commission (EC).

According to him, a more inclusive and consultative appointment process will curb political animosity.

Speaking JoyNews’ Newsfile, Hosi highlighted that the appointment of former EC Chairperson Charlotte Osei lacked consultation and inclusiveness, a factor he believes contributed significantly to the tension leading to her removal.

“I maintained that Charlotte was not consultatively appointed, it was not an inclusive process, and that also fed into the kind of animosity that led to her removal,” he said.

He further warned that similar issues are evident in the appointment of Justice Getrude Torkonoo and cautioned that the same challenges could arise with the imminent appointment of Electoral Chairperson, Jean Mensah to the commission.

“We need to find a way to solve this problem,” Hosi stressed.

Hosi emphasised that all relevant stakeholders should be involved in the appointment process to ensure collective ownership and bolster public confidence.

“I have recommended that we have an inclusive process which has all the relevant parties making contribution to it so that we own our EC together, so that we own our Chief Justice together.”

Black Queens head coach Kim Lars Bjorkegren says Sunday, June 29, 2025, high-profile friendly against Nigeria will provide his team with the perfect test as they finalize preparations for the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

The Ghanaian side will face their West African rivals in the last of three preparatory matches lined up before they depart for Morocco, where the tournament kicks off on July 5.

Ghana is drawn in Group C alongside defending champions South Africa, Mali, and Tanzania.

Speaking to the Ghana FA’s media team after back-to-back wins over Malawi and Benin, Bjorkegren welcomed the challenge posed by Nigeria’s Super Falcons.

“With full respect to Malawi and Benin, which we have played against, Nigeria is one step up, one of the best teams in Africa; they have good players in almost every position, so it’s going to be a very tough game, but that’s also what we need now,” he said.

The Queens recorded a 3-1 win over Malawi and followed it up with a 4-2 victory against Benin, with Bjorkegren rotating his squad to give several players minutes ahead of the final selection.

Museveni to extend tenure past 40 years in 2026

0

President Museveni on Saturday personally collected nomination forms from the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party headquarters in Kampala, in the clearest signal of his intent to seek a seventh five-year term as party chairman and presidential flagbearer, aiming to extend his uninterrupted rule beyond 40 years.

Draped in the party’s signature yellow, thousands of NRM supporters gathered in and around Plot 13 in Kampala by midday, merrymaking as Museveni ambled into Kyadondo past 1 pm with First Lady Janet for the first formal step in a process widely seen as reaffirming his grip on power.

Anything other than a fresh bid—launched in battleground Kampala by Museveni himself, who will be 81 by voting day in early 2026—would mark a major political realignment in Uganda’s post-independence landscape.

“When I was doing my PDM tours, everywhere in public meetings, there have been resolutions passed, and petitions signed requesting me to offer myself to be chairman of NRM again and also the party presidential flagbearer.” he said, adding that: “I’ve been saying we shall decide that at the right time… Now this is the right time when I’ve come to pick nomination forms.”

Since seizing power in 1986, Museveni has earned praise from supporters for revolutionising Uganda. But as he unveiled his Shs20 million bid to extend his rule into a fourth decade, the capital was under heavy military and police deployment.

Museveni now seeks a fresh mandate despite deep-rooted crises — including endemic corruption, soaring unemployment, widespread poverty, stalled progress, institutional decay, constitutional concerns, crime and mounting speculation over a looming succession battle that threatens to unsettle the meticulously maintained political equilibrium.

UPDF soldiers remain on guard in Kampala on June 28, 2025, as President Museveni moved to pick nomination forms for his bid to contest a seventh presidential term.

In the run-up to Saturday, Museveni also attacked the opposition for lacking the experience to govern and accused them of colluding with Western powers to destabilise Uganda. Opposition leaders dismiss these claims as political smears.

Uganda’s post-colonial history features just nine presidencies since independence from Britain in 1962. With a population approaching 46 million, per government data, most Ugandans have only ever known one leader, Museveni.

The January 2026 general election is quite expected to reaffirm the former guerrilla fighter’s dominance in a political environment where dissent is routinely suppressed violently, and electoral processes are frequently marred by accusations of irregularities and court challenges.

Leading the opposition is Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, a former pop star turned politician who came second in 2021 and has already declared his intention to run again.

Bobi Wine has repeatedly denounced the last election as fraudulent, citing ballot stuffing, voter intimidation, and a security apparatus hostile to his campaign.

“Museveni our Messi…Maradona”

According to NRM electoral commission chairperson Dr Tanga Odoi, the party had originally scheduled the presidential nomination for July 3, but due to anticipated commotion, July 5 has now been specifically reserved for Museveni to formally return for nomination.

This will pave the way for Museveni’s already decreed endorsement as NRM frontrunner and national chairman. The nomination of the presidential flag bearer, set by NRM for October 2–3, is a process that has traditionally tilted in his favour, effectively setting the stage for a pre-World Cup 2026 poll clash of generations, ideology, and vision with few others that have expressed interest.

On Saturday, Tororo Municipality MP Yeri Apollo Ofwono, also the district’s NRM party chairperson, voiced staunch support for Museveni saying: “We’re waiting for the delegates’ conference then we clear him fully as sole candidate. We cannot change the player because he is Uganda’s Maradona. He is the guy who can score all the goals like Messi, like Diego Maradona, so why change him?”

Rosemary Nansubuga Seninde, NRM Director for Mobilization, called for party unity. “This is the time to stop the infighting and improve while the opposition grapples with its own challenges. In 2021, we didn’t perform well in central Uganda and the Busoga sub-region, but we are optimistic about 2026. The government’s programmes like PDM have helped many out of poverty.”

Alongside the presidential vote, Ugandans will also elect members of parliament in January, setting the stage for a highly charged and consequential political contest.

Bobi Wine has already declared the 2026 poll a “Protest Vote” against systemic failures of Museveni’s government.

But Museveni concluded his Saturday remarks saying: “I thank the NRM fraternity for the support they have showed me and this is what has encouraged me to come forward to escort the party members, especially the Bazzukulu for five more years and then we see what happens.”

Bobi Wine came second but rejected the 2021 election results, saying his victory was stolen.

‘Deleting just 10 seconds is an insult’ – Group lead fires back

The issue arose when Medikal released a track titled Welcome to Africa, which, according to Alabaster Box, used a portion of their song Akwaaba in the first 10 seconds without permission.

On April 8, 2025, the group’s legal team served a copyright infringement notice to Medikal and his team, demanding that the song be removed from all streaming platforms and that all business activity linked to the song cease immediately.

Torkornoo’s press conference an ‘act of indiscretion and unfortunate’ – Senyo Hosi

0

Convener of the One Ghana Movement, has described suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo’s recent press conference as an act of indiscretion and unfortunate.

Senyo Hosi argued that her public statements undermined judicial processes.

Mr Hosi made these remarks during a heated discussion on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, where he questioned the appropriateness of Justice Torkornoo’s decision to address her impeachment proceedings in the “court of public opinion” rather than through constitutional channels.

The galamsey code word familiar to Wassa Akropong residents

The term “Poley” might be unfamiliar to many Ghanaians or may sound like an unusual nickname, but in the town of Wassa Akropong in the Western Region of Ghana, it carries deep and gritty meaning.

While it may sound new to outsiders, for residents entrenched in the gold-fueled hustle of the area, it’s a way of life.

In a revealing documentary by GhanaWeb titled “The Gold Market That Fuels Ghana’s Galamsey,” the story delves into the heart of Wassa Akropong, where mining isn’t just an occupation, it’s a lifeline.

According to the exposé, nearly every household in this gold-rich town is involved in illegal small-scale mining, locally known as galamsey.

The term “Poley” surfaced during an interview conducted by GhanaWeb’s Etsey Atisu with some local women who appeared to be involved in the activity.

They explained that “Poley” is simply another name for galamsey, used informally among locals.

According to them, they turn to this trade as a means to earn a living.

“We are going to do galamsey; to do what we call ‘Poley’ to get something small into our pockets. Poley is the same as galamsey,” one of the women said, amid laughter.

Zoomlion deploys 200 new trucks to tackle waste management nationwide

0

Zoomlion Ghana Limited has deployed 100 out of 200 new state-of-the-art waste management trucks nationwide, with the remaining 100 trucks expected to arrive soon.

This initiative aims to boost Ghana’s waste management infrastructure, promoting cleaner and healthier communities across all 16 regions.

The nationwide deployment, covering all 16 regions, significantly boosts Ghana’s waste management infrastructure, paving the way for cleaner and healthier communities.

At the official launch of the new fleet for the Eastern Region, the New Juaben South Municipal Sanitation Chairman, Enoch Boahene, representing the Eastern Regional Minister, highlighted that the trucks will boost operational efficiency and enhance waste collection capacity in the districts.

According to him, Zoomlion’s intervention has been a relief for Ghana, as its innovative waste management strategies have prevented waste from overwhelming the country.

“If not for their innovative waste management, waste would have engulfed the country, but due to their waste collection and haulage to centralised centres to recycle waste, the situation is different,” he noted.

“I visited some areas within New Juaben and saw many places where waste was piled up, but because of the innovations brought in by Zoomlion and the collaboration with the assembly, we were able to collect all the waste, which averted the sanitation issues that were emanating within the assembly. This was due to the good work by Zoomlion,” he added.

He further called on all relevant stakeholders, chiefs, and individuals who can help the company grow to come on board, as they are doing a great job for the country in terms of sanitation.

The General Manager of 360 Waste Limited, a subsidiary of Zoomlion Ghana Limited, Emil Amoah, explained that the initiative forms part of the company’s strategic investment in modern equipment and improved service delivery.

“This fleet expansion is a reflection of our deep commitment to environmental protection, public health, and sustainable urban development,” he stated.

The 200 trucks are equipped with modern features to handle waste collection under varying conditions, ensuring faster and more reliable waste collection, extended coverage to previously underserved communities, increased readiness to respond to emergencies, and high-demand periods.

The goal is not just to collect waste but to provide timely, reliable, and community-focused sanitation services across the country.

Each region is receiving a share of the fleet, allowing local teams to strengthen waste management activities in their jurisdictions.

The initiative aims to reduce sanitation-related health risks, improve the overall cleanliness of towns and cities, and ensure equitable access to quality waste collection services.

Zoomlion continues to work closely with Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to align local needs with national sanitation goals.

The company believes that strong partnerships are crucial to achieving lasting change in Ghana’s environmental health landscape.

“Our collaboration with local authorities is grounded in mutual respect and a shared vision of providing exceptional service delivery to all Ghanaians,” he noted.

The deployment also reinforces Zoomlion’s commitment to sustainability. The company remains focused on environmentally responsible practices, economically viable operations, and long-term social impact.

The move has been widely welcomed by local authorities and sanitation stakeholders as a timely intervention to improve waste management nationwide, especially as Ghana continues to battle urbanisation-related challenges.

Ignore Recycled Lies – Dr Razak opoku Fires Back at Smear Attempt

0

Bryan Acheampong And Dr Bawumia
Bryan Acheampong

A leading figure in the Bryan Acheampong for President 2028 campaign, Dr. Razak Kojo Opoku, is urging members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to rise above internal divisions and misinformation, following a resurgence of a decade-old publication aimed at discrediting the presidential hopeful.

The article in question, first published on January 31, 2014, by the now-defunct Al-Hajj newspaper and later circulated on GhanaWeb, has recently resurfaced on social media. Dr. Opoku argues the piece, originally written by a pro-National Democratic Congress (NDC) outlet under the leadership of the late Alhaji Bature, is being weaponized by elements within the NPP seeking to sow discord.

Without naming names, Dr. Opoku said it was “unfortunate” that some within the party were attempting to associate Dr. Acheampong with statements and sentiments he has never endorsed.

“Bryan Acheampong has never commented on Ken Agyapong’s remarks following the 2024 general elections,” Dr. Opoku stressed. “To try and link him to an NDC propaganda piece from 2014 is both dishonest and desperate.”

He added that such tactics serve only to derail the party’s momentum as it eyes a strong comeback in the 2028 elections.

The Bryan Acheampong campaign, which has steadily gained grassroots support in recent months, has faced growing internal scrutiny as NPP jockeying for the flagbearer position intensifies. Dr. Opoku believes this is partly why old, irrelevant content is being unearthed and shared without context.

He appealed to party members to prioritize unity and policy over petty rivalry and misinformation.

“Our campaign stands on integrity and vision for the future,” he said. “We will not be distracted by recycled lies or internal sabotage.”

Dr. Opoku concluded with a call for discipline within the party ranks, urging NPP supporters to avoid tactics that mirror the opposition’s playbook.

“As we prepare for 2028, let us focus on what unites us, not what divides us,” he said. “Let’s campaign on ideas, not on vendettas.”

Victoria Bright urges truth and accountability following Asiedu Nketia’s criticism of EC

0

Legal expert Victoria Bright has called for truth and accountability in Ghana’s electoral processes, in the wake of critique of the Electoral Commission (EC) by National Democratic Congress (NDC) Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia.

Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, Victoria Bright emphasised the importance of confronting uncomfortable truths to safeguard democracy.

“The law is the law, and I think we have to speak truth to ourselves,” Bright said.

“I believe that if things have not gone as they should, we should have a conviction to actually come out and speak the truth basically.”

Bright expressed her dissatisfaction with the fact that some people have been left unrepresented for four years, an issue that has fueled public frustration and undermined confidence in the electoral system.

“I have not been happy with the fact that people have been left unrepresented for four years,” she stressed.

“And I don’t believe that anybody can be happy about that,” she continued.

She also recalled the violent events of the 2019 Ayawaso-West Wuogon by-election, which resulted in an unrest and raised questions about electoral fairness and security.

“We all saw the violence in Ayawaso-West Wuogon as well. That was terrible,” Bright added.

Johnson Asiedu Nketia on Wednesday, June 25 launched a scathing attack on the EC, declaring its entire leadership unfit for purpose and calling for their removal.

Davido scolds fan for bringing baby to concert

Davido is a Nigerian musician Davido is a Nigerian musician

Nigerian musician Davido has scolded a fan for bringing a baby to one of his concerts, calling the act irresponsible and dangerous.

The incident happened during an outdoor performance where Davido was on stage performing the hit song Ogechi, which features BoyPee, Brown Joel, and Hyce.

While entertaining the crowd, Davido spotted a fan holding a baby in the large crowd.

Davido, upset by what he saw, paused his performance and called out the fan.

The Nigerian singer questioned the fan for bringing a baby to the concert, asking if the person was crazy and labelled the fan as wicked for exposing the child to such a crowded environment.

“Who is carrying a baby? Are you crazy? Take your baby away. You are a wicked person,” he said.

His reaction was caught on video and has since gone viral on social media, sparking a range of comments.

Many users have shown support for Davido’s outburst, agreeing that bringing a baby to such a crowded environment was highly unsafe.

One user commented, “Why would a person bring a baby to this kind of place? Women with wahala.”

Another questioned how security or event protocol allowed it in the first place, writing, “Why did they allow the person bring a baby in? Misplaced priorities.”

Others also backed Davido’s reaction, saying it was necessary.

“Common sense should’ve told them a concert environment isn’t safe for a baby. Davido had every right to speak up,” one comment read.

King Mswati III tours Manhyia Palace Museum, learns history of the Asante Kingdom

The King of Eswatini, King Mswati III, his wife, and his entourage were given a guided tour of the Manhyia Palace Museum in Kumasi as part of their visit to Ghana.

The tour, which took place on June 25, 2025, offered the Eswatini monarch an up-close look at the cultural and historical treasures of the Asante Kingdom.

In a video shared on social media, King Mswati III was seen walking through the museum, engaged as a museum guide, clad in traditional Kente cloth, explaining the meanings and origins behind various artefacts and symbols that tell the story of the Asante people.

One of the standout moments of the tour was an explanation of the talking drums, a communication tool in the Asante Kingdom.

“The talking drums, these drums, anytime they are beaten, they convey messages from the king to the people,” the guide said.

The monarch and his wife were also introduced to the Asantehemaa’s (Queenmother’s) palanquin, a ceremonial seat that shows the queen mother’s important role in the Asante Kingdom.

The guide explained the way the palanquin is carried and its meaning in Asante governance.

“The Asantehemaa sits on the chair and is carried by four strong men, two in front and two behind. At times, she is even carried on the head. If she is carried on the head, it tells so many things. It shows that the queen mother controls everything. The king seeks her advice on matters of governance. Our Asantehemaa is powerful when it comes to the kingdom of Asante,” he noted.

The tour also featured a framed coloured painting of the 14th Asante King, the first of its kind in Asanteman.

The guide explained the painting’s history, noting that it was done by a Hungarian woman who had visited Kumasi.

“This is the first coloured painting of the Asante Nation. This is the fourteenth King of Asante. It was painted by a Hungarian woman whose husband was in Kumasi. They were guests of the king. Seeing how beautifully he was dressed, and since there were no cameras at the time, she decided to paint him,” the guide explained.

Another key part of the tour included a breakdown of the Asante flag and its symbolism.

The guide emphasised that Asante was already a sovereign nation before Ghana’s independence and that the colours of the flag carried meaning.

“The yellow in the flag represents wealth, rich in gold. The black stands for the strength of the people. The green symbolises the virginity of the land. Together, we say the rich black man in the forest. That’s the meaning of our flag,” he stated.

The tour also showcased a wide range of historical items, including statues of former queen mothers, ceremonial swords, traditional stools, old television sets, and other relics that reflect the evolution of the Asante Kingdom.

Afreximbank President Benedict Oramah announces departure after transformative decade

0

Professor Benedict Oramah bid farewell to the bank at the 32nd Annual Meetings in Abuja Professor Benedict Oramah bid farewell to the bank at the 32nd Annual Meetings in Abuja

Professor Benedict Oramah, the President and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank), on Friday bid farewell to the bank at the 32nd Annual Meetings in Abuja, where he delivered his final address.

This marks the end of a transformative decade-long tenure that reshaped African development finance.

Speaking at the Transcorp Congress Hall where his journey with Afreximbank began in 1993, Professor Oramah reflected on unprecedented growth during his leadership since 2015.

The emotional address came full circle at the Hall, the venue where he first witnessed the signing of the Afreximbank Charter in October 1993, some 32 years ago.

Under his stewardship, the bank’s total assets and guarantees grew more than eight-fold, reaching US$43.5 billion by April 2025, while total revenues rose seven-fold to US$3.24 billion from US$408 million in 2015.

“I stand before you most pleased and fulfilled that I kept my promises,” Prof Oramah told the gathering of African Heads of State, government officials and other stakeholders, clearly stating that he gave the job the best of his energy, intellect, courage and determination.

The outgoing president highlighted the bank’s investment footprint, with approximately US$120bn invested in Africa and the Caribbean between 2020 and May 2025, and US$155bn during the entire decade.

Net income surged by 700 percent from US$125 million in 2015 to about US$1 billion in 2024, while shareholders’ funds increased from US$1 billion to US$7.5 billion over the same period.

During his tenure, Professor Oramah positioned Afreximbank as Africa’s crisis response institution, leading interventions during major economic shocks, including the disbursement of US$10 billion during the 2015-2016 commodity price crisis to Ghana, Nigeria, and Egypt.

Also, during the COVID-19 pandemic, it provided US$8 billion in support and facilitated the procurement of 400 million Johnson & Johnson vaccine doses through a US$2 billion facility for African countries.

The Ukraine crisis response saw Afreximbank disbursing US$50bn between 2022 and 2023, helping African economies diversify sourcing and develop internal capacities.

The bank fast-tracked petroleum refineries and fertilizer production projects to reduce dependence on Black Sea supplies, while expanding payment services to countries that lost international credit lines.

Professor Oramah said the bank’s leadership philosophy centered on what he termed; ‘African Best Practice,’ which made “each great nation shape its own destiny, rejecting externally defined international standards that had kept Africa stagnant for 60 years.”

This approach enabled landmark deals that traditional institutions avoided, including over US$4 billion in support for Nigeria’s Dangote Refinery and Petrochemical complex, now operational and cutting petroleum imports by US$10-12 billion annually.

The bank also arranged a $2.9 billion credit facility entirely from within Africa for Tanzania’s Rufiji dam and hydropower plant project.

Under his leadership, Afreximbank became the primary architect of African financial integration through initiatives like the Pan-African Payment and Settlement System (PAPSS), which has processed US$68 billion in trade payments across 16 countries.

The bank also championed the African Continental Free Trade Agreement implementation, raising intra-African trade finance from three per cent to 32 per cent of its total loan portfolio.

The institution expanded beyond traditional trade finance into industrial development, healthcare, and creative industries as partnerships saw investment in Special Industrial Zones across nine countries, including Africa’s first Medical Centre of Excellence.

A US$2 billion commitment supported the creative industries, while the recently established Concessional Finance Window aims to raise US$5bn for development assistance.

Professor Oramah acknowledged the foundation laid by his predecessors; Christopher Edordu, the pioneer president, and Jean-Louis Ekra, the second president , while expressing confidence in the bank’s future trajectory.

He lauded the Board of Directors’ rigorous selection process and urged continued strong support for the bank’s new leadership, emphasising that the institution’s success depended on unwavering shareholder commitment and protection.

He projected that his successor would lead the institution to US$250bn in total assets within the next decade, stating that the scale was necessary for Africa to “escape from the shame of poverty and underdevelopment.”

Shareholders are expected to vote on a new president later this week, with Abuja set to make history as the city where three of the bank’s four presidents would have been appointed.

Mohammed Kudus is expected to move to top Premier League club this season Mohammed Kudus is expected to move to top Premier League club this season

Ghanaian forward Mohammed Kudus aims to play in the 2025/2026 UEFA Champions League, with top European clubs chasing his signature.

According to Flashscore, the Ghanaian player is willing to join any club that offers him the opportunity to compete in the elite club competition at the highest level.

The contract offers from the clubs will also influence his decision on where to play next season as he seeks to rejuvenate his career.

Meanwhile, West Ham United are reportedly demanding that his release clause, around €85 million, be triggered before considering negotiations.

Premier League clubs like Tottenham, Chelsea, Newcastle United, and Arsenal are reportedly exploring the option of signing the player to strengthen their squads.

However, the price tag has been a stumbling block for these teams in striking a deal with West Ham, which would allow them to begin pre-season training with the attacker.

Kudus’ future will be decided when the 2025 summer transfer window opens, following his underwhelming performances this season.

“Don’t Risk a Constitutional Crisis” – Ansa Asare Warns Mahama on CJ Petition Response

0

Former Director of the Ghana School of Law, Kwaku Ansa Asare, has advised President John Dramani Mahama and Attorney General Dr. Dominic Ayine to refrain from reacting to the Minority’s demands over recent statements made by Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo as reported by Citinewsroom.

Chief Justice Torkornoo, currently facing investigations on three separate petitions for her removal, recently broke her silence, alleging procedural breaches and violations of her rights, and hinting at a broader conspiracy against her.

In response, the Minority demanded a public explanation from the President and Attorney General, criticizing their silence.

However, Ansa Asare believes their demands are misplaced, describing them as “misguided and unconstitutional.”

He cited Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution, which outlines the process for removing a Chief Justice, emphasizing that once the President sets up a committee to probe such matters, his role becomes limited until the report is presented.

“The President and the Attorney General have a constitutional obligation to remain silent,” he stated, arguing that any deviation could amount to interference in a constitutional process.

He further criticized the Minority’s approach, attributing their actions to internal instability within the New Patriotic Party.

“There is a leadership crisis in the NPP,” he stated, suggesting the Minority’s behavior aims to create an illusion of political relevance.

Describing the calls for presidential response as “a desperate and ill-advised move,” Ansa Asare said it risks plunging the country into a constitutional crisis.

He urged them to focus on resolving internal issues instead of escalating tensions on national matters.

Madam Montrat made the statement at an event to commemorate the 158th Anniversary of Canada’s Confederation.

She praised Ghanaian students studying in Canada and acknowledged the role of academic exchanges in enriching both societies.

“Across Canada, Ghanaians, Canadians are helping to shape our society as educators, entrepreneurs, artists, engineers and leaders.

Mr Iddrisu quoted Lester B. Pearson, Canada’s Nobel Peace Prize-winning diplomat and former Prime Minister, stating:

“Of all our dreams today, there is none more important or so hard to realise than that of peace in the world.”

“As we reflect on our shared achievements, we must remain alert to the complexities of today’s interconnected world and respond proactively to emerging challenges.”

Calls for removal of EC boss, deputies justified – Franklin Cudjoe

0

President of IMANI Africa, Franklin Cudjoe, has asserted that calls for the removal of the Electoral Commission (EC) Chairperson, Jean Mensa and her Deputies, Dr Bossman Asare and Samuel Tettey, are justified.

This comes in the wake of calls from the Chairman of the National Democratic Congress, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, urging the EC chairpersons to resign.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s “The Big Issue” on Saturday, June 28, he argued that the EC, under its current leadership, has failed to uphold transparency and accountability, especially in its handling of recent elections.

He criticised the Commission for overspending in past electoral exercises and took particular issue with the disenfranchisement of residents in the Santrokofi, Akpafu, Lolobi, and Likpe (SALL) areas, who were denied what he describes as their right to vote in the 2020 parliamentary elections.

While clarifying that he would not personally file a petition seeking their removal, Cudjoe revealed that IMANI has already petitioned the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) over the EC’s conduct.

He emphasised that the issues go beyond partisan politics and touch on the integrity of Ghana’s democratic institutions.

“Everybody knows my position on this. I am not talking about the high-handedness of SALL, as for that one, if I add it, their sins will be worse. I will not cry for them, but I hope that it is done properly and that there are no faceless petitioners.

“I will never petition because everybody knows my position. We have petitioned the CHRAJ already on this matter, and I think they are working on it to see what they can do concerning some of these things, not necessarily their removal but to just prove that they were high-handed, evasive and somehow complicit in our financial woes,” he said.

Ghanaian Sports Journalist Urges Arsenal To Let Thomas Partey Leave

0

  • A Ghanaian sports journalist has recommended for Arsenal to release Ghanaian midfielder Thomas Partey
  • The sports reporter has explained his opinion in a viral video which is provided in this article
  • Thomas Partey’s contract with Arsenal officially ends on June 30, 2025 and no agreemnt has been reached between the two parties

Arsenal’s decision regarding Thomas Partey’s future has become one of the most talked-about subjects in the English Premier League.

The Ghanaian midfielder’s contract with the Gunners is set to expire at the end of June 2025, and despite recent talks over a potential extension, there has been no agreement reached as of Saturday, June 28.

This has sparked debate, with a Ghanaian sports journalist urging the club to offload the 31-year-old and not offer him a new deal.

The Ghanaian reporter’s comments have caused a stir in the media, with his assertion that Partey has not been consistent enough during his five seasons at Arsenal and that his frequent injuries are a liability for the club.

Has Thomas Partey been consistent at Arsenal?

According to Daniel Koranteng of Multimedia Group, Thomas Partey has been inconsistent at Arsenal and his overall impact since his arrival from Atletico Madrid in 2020 is minimal.

Despite his undeniable talent and experience, the 31-year-old has been criticized for not maintaining the level of dependability expected from a player of his caliber.

In a video that has gone viral on social media, Koranteng argued that Partey’s performances have been far from stellar over the past five seasons.

According to the Ghanaian journalist, this lack of consistency, particularly in crucial matches, makes it difficult to justify offering Partey a new contract.

“Partey has shown flashes of brilliance, but there’s no denying that he has struggled with consistency. For a club like Arsenal, consistency is key, and in terms of business decisions, the club should seriously consider moving on from him.”

What is Thomas Partey’s injury history at Arsenal?

According to Transfermarkt, Thomas Partey has suffered eight different types of injuries since joining Arsenal in 2020, including hamstring, groin, and hip setbacks.

Therefore, Koranteng highlighted the midfielder’s persistent injury troubles as a major factor in the debate over his future at Arsenal.

The Multimedia presenter pointed out that Arsenal cannot afford to keep a player who is frequently unavailable for selection, especially as they aim for the Premier League next season.

“Arsenal cannot continue to carry a player who is so often sidelined. It’s time for them to make a decision that prioritizes the club’s long-term future.” Koranteng said.

Koranteng’s argument seems to aligns with the business side of football, where clubs must weigh the costs of keeping injury-prone and inconsistent players on their books against the benefits they bring to the squad.

Given Partey’s his age, contract situation, and injury history, his market value may decline significantly over the next 12 months.

Watch the video of Daniel Koranteng’s ruthless opinion below.

Which clubs are interested in Thomas Partey?

Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, and several Saudi Pro League teams are reportedly interested in signing the Thomas Partey despite his age and weak injury record midfielder.

This interest from top clubs reflects his quality when fit and his experience at the highest level of European football.

While Barcelona and Atletico Madrid may offer a familiar destination for the Black Stars player, the lure of the Saudi Pro League also offers an intriguing possibility, with the league’s financial muscle allowing them to make competitive offers.

Brad Pitt’s Los Angeles home ‘ransacked’

Actor Brad Pitt's home in Los Angeles has been ransacked by a trio of thieves Actor Brad Pitt’s home in Los Angeles has been ransacked by a trio of thieves

Three suspects broke into the home in the Los Feliz late on Wednesday through a front window and “ransacked the location,” according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

Police did not confirm the home belonged to the Oscar-winning actor, but the address matched that of a home Mr Pitt purchased in 2023.

Authorities said the suspects fled with stolen items, though it’s unclear what was taken. The actor was reportedly not home at the time of the burglary.

Mr Pitt was in the UK earlier this week for the London premier of his new film F1, which is released on Friday. He was accompanied by fellow Hollywood star Tom Cruise and Lewis Hamilton, who has seven Formula One World Drivers’ Championship titles.

US media reported he was not home at the time of the burglary, which authorities said happened around 22:30 local time on Wednesday.

LA police would not confirm whether Mr Pitt was home or the value of items stolen. The BBC also contacted representatives for the actor.

The large three-bedroom home sits just outside Griffith Park – which is home to the famous Hollywood Sign. It is surrounded by a large fence and greenery that shields the home from public view.

The burglary follows others reported in the city targeting other celebrities, including Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban.

Last month, a man was also arrested on stalking and vandalism charges after he allegedly rammed his vehicle into the gate of the home of Pitt’s ex-wife, Jennifer Aniston.

Woman sues Synlab for GH¢10 million after false HIV-positive test result cost her job in Kuwait

Synlab has been accused of issuing a client with a false HIV-positive test result Synlab has been accused of issuing a client with a false HIV-positive test result

A resident of Damongo, Rahinatu Amissah, has sued Accra-based medical laboratory company Synlab for allegedly producing a false HIV-positive test result.

In her writ, filed at the High Court in Accra and shared by The Law Platform, Rahinatu Amissah, through her lawyers, said the false test result brought her shame and led to the loss of her job in Kuwait.

She indicated that she had gone to the company for an HIV test as part of her application for permanent residency in Kuwait, where she had been working as a hairdresser, in compliance with the country’s immigration requirements.

She said the Kuwaiti immigration officials were informed of the incorrect test result, which indicated she was HIV-positive.

The immigration authorities then relayed the information to her employer, which resulted in her dismissal.

Rahinatu said she was forced to return to Ghana, only to discover that her friends and family had also been informed that she was HIV-positive.

According to her, this led to severe social stigma and rejection, further worsening her situation.

The court documents revealed that Rahinatu Amissah only discovered she was not HIV-positive after undergoing further HIV tests during her pregnancy, aimed at preventing mother-to-child transmission.

Several tests, including one conducted at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, confirmed that she was not HIV-positive.

Following these results, she confronted Synlab and subsequently filed a lawsuit against the company.

She is asking the court to order the company to pay GH¢10 million in compensation, along with other claims.

Below are the reliefs she is seeking:

i. An order directing the Defendant to pay the Plaintiff the sum of Ten Million Ghana Cedis (GH¢10,000,000.00) for loss of earnings and emotional trauma caused by the Defendant’s negligence.

ii. An order directing the Defendant to pay the Plaintiff special damages assessed at Thirty-Eight Thousand Two Hundred Ghana Cedis (GH¢38,200.00).

iii. An order directing the Defendant to publish an unqualified apology to the Plaintiff in the national dailies.

iv. An order directing the Defendant to notify the Kuwaiti authorities and her former Kuwaiti employer of her HIV-negative status.

v. Costs, including legal fees.

How Dr Orleans‑Lindsay fell victim to a $1.3 million land scam

0

Executive Chairman of JL Holdings, Dr James Orleans‑Lindsay Executive Chairman of JL Holdings, Dr James Orleans‑Lindsay

Executive Chairman of JL Holdings, Dr James Orleans‑Lindsay, has recounted a devastating experience that cost him $1.3 million in a fraudulent land deal a decade ago.

In an interview with Bola Ray on GHOne TV, Dr Orleans‑Lindsay shared how he was lured into what appeared to be a prime real estate acquisition in Accra in 2014.

Despite conducting extensive due diligence, including working with a reputable agent and verifying land titles, the seasoned businessman later discovered that the land he thought he had purchased belonged to someone else entirely.

“I did everything. I went through an agent, a realtor, a solid guy. The guy was a known person and all that. Not knowing the scammer had cloned the land title,” he said.

“When I did a search on the land title, it all came out as if everything was correct. He [the scammer] had done passports in the names of his brothers, his siblings, and all that. He had driving licenses and double IDs for every person. It was well crafted. I never suspected a thing. I only found out when I went onto the land,” he recounted.

He added, “I was so shocked that this thing would happen to me.”

Rather than shifting the financial burden to his company, Dr Orleans‑Lindsay chose to personally bear the cost and has since been repaying the amount through monthly deductions from his own salary.

“Up to today, I’m still paying because I didn’t want to pay from my company’s funds,” he explained.

Ironically, Dr Orleans‑Lindsay is regarded as an authority on Accra’s land history, which made his experience even more sobering.

“I pride myself among the people who would be called if you wanted five or ten people to talk about the history of land in Accra. So I fell on a sword that I shouldn’t have,” he admitted.

Though the emotional and financial toll has been significant, he believes sharing his story can serve as a valuable cautionary tale.

“Every time I tell people; when it’s too good to be true, then it’s not true,” he said.

Raphinha slammed on social media over disrespectful Club World Cup comment

Raphinha has criticised the scheduling of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup Raphinha has criticised the scheduling of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup

Barcelona attacker Raphael Dias Belloli, well-known as Raphinha, has faced backlash on social media over a controversial remark he made about the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.

Speaking at an event, the Brazilian forward asserted that it is embarrassing for players to be coerced by football authorities into participating in the inaugural tournament.

He stated that the fact players are giving up their holidays to participate shows a lack of seriousness, and players would not agree to the schedule if consulted earlier.

“Club World Cup? It’s a shame to give up my holiday to play something you’re forced to play. At no point were the players asked about the dates if they wanted to play,” he said, as shared by Barca Universal on X on June 27, 2025.

This comment has sparked a wave of criticism from football fans and pundits worldwide, who believe his comments are derogatory and should be condemned.

They argued that the player is speaking out of jealousy since his club was not selected to participate due to their poor performance in the UEFA Champions League over the past seasons.

Some football pundits rejected his claim, noting that football officials prepare competition schedules and get approval from players and clubs before implementation.

Meanwhile, the FIFA Club World Cup is taking place in the United States, featuring 32 clubs.

There is a significant amount of money allocated to teams for participation, winning games, and the overall champions.

‘CJ Torkornoo’s uncle took money from CIA to betray Nkrumah’ – Historian Anokye Frimpong alleges

0

Anokye Frimpong (L) says Nkrumah’s foreign minister Quaison-Sackey (R) is Justice Torkornoo’s uncle

Lawyer and historian Yaw Anokye Frimpong has said that suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo undermined herself by publicly disclosing that she is the niece of Major Sam Acquah, the soldier who was murdered alongside three judges on June 30, 1982.

Speaking in an interview on TV3 on June 26, 2025, the historian argued that Justice Torkornoo’s revelation has drawn public attention to her family ties with Dr Alex Quaison-Sackey, whom he claims played a key role in the betrayal that led to the overthrow of Ghana’s first President, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, in 1966.

Anokye Frimpong explained that the disclosure by the embattled Chief Justice effectively made it known that her father was the brother of Dr Alex Quaison-Sackey, who served as Nkrumah’s Foreign Affairs Minister.

He alleged that Major Acquah, whom Nkrumah deeply trusted, accepted money from the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) of the United States and betrayed Ghana’s first president.

“Until she disclosed that, I didn’t even know that her direct uncle, her father’s brother, was the same man who betrayed Kwame Nkrumah: Dr Alex Quaison-Sackey.

“He (Quaison-Sackey) took money from the CIA. He was Nkrumah’s most trusted confidant. He assured Nkrumah that he could travel safely, that there would be no coup because the CIA had promised to make him the next president of Ghana,” Anokye Frimpong alleged.

He added, “That man’s niece is this woman. Until all of this came out, I wouldn’t have known. So she should let sleeping dogs lie. Whether she likes it or not, she will not be the Chief Justice of Ghana forever.”

Background:

Suspend Chief Justice Torkornoo, at a press conference in Accra on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, claimed the choice of the venue for the hearing of the three petitions for her removal, the Adu Lodge, was deliberately selected to intimidate her.

According to her, the Adu Lodge featured very prominently in the planning of the murder of three High Court Judges, and her uncle, Major Sam Acquah, on June 30, 1981, and was chosen for her ‘trial’ to make her “feel insecure”.

“Was Adu Lodge chosen for this inquiry to make me feel insecure? I think so. And I continue to hold the view that there is no reason to hold a quasi-judicial hearing behind the high walls of Adu Lodge,” she said.

President John Dramani Mahama disclosed that the CIA was responsible for the removal of Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah.

Speaking at the 68th Independence Day celebration at the Jubilee House on March 6, 2025, the president disclosed that declassified US intelligence documents show that the CIA was behind the coup that removed Nkrumah while he was out of the country.

“The verdict of history is now loud and clear. Declassified documents from the United States archives reveal that this was a coup inspired and engineered by the CIA,” he said.

Suspended CJ has gone rogue – Hamza Suhuyini fires Torkornoo over presser

0

Hamza Suhuyini, a member of the Communications Team of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has sharply criticised suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, accusing her of abandoning constitutional norms following her recent press conference.

Speaking on The Big Issue on Channel One TV on Saturday, June 28, 2025, Suhuyini expressed deep concern over what he described as a blatant disregard for constitutional order and judicial ethics by the Chief Justice.

“Listening to her, for the first time, I think she has taken a conscious decision to go rogue as far as this matter is concerned, and consciously chose to desecrate the constitution of Ghana and the judicial architecture and finally dared the presidency of Ghana, which is also another constitutional creation,” he stated.

Suhuyini’s comments were in response to Justice Torkornoo’s public address on the ongoing proceedings regarding her possible removal from office. The press conference has drawn criticism, particularly because Article 146 of the Constitution mandates that such proceedings be held in camera and prohibits public commentary on them.

“You questioned the motive behind holding the proceedings in camera and proceeded on that basis to file an application at the Supreme Court demanding that the proceedings be made public. In addition to that, you claimed your human rights were under threat and were being violated by the committee,” Suhuyini said.

He argued that, as a sitting Justice of the Supreme Court, the Chief Justice should have known that the Court’s decision to dismiss her application had legal precedent—and that her subsequent decision to speak publicly on the matter violated constitutional norms.

“The court handled your matter and decided there was no constitutional basis for your request and threw it out. Then you proceed to discuss the petition one after the other in the press conference, which is the very objective the Supreme Court sought to prevent. You described the bench, of which you are a part, and contradicted Article 146(8), which mandates that such proceedings be held in camera. So clearly, she went rogue and is ready for all the consequences. Because she knew what she was doing,” he emphasised.

Suhuyini further questioned Justice Torkornoo’s continued stay in office, insisting her conduct meets the constitutional threshold for removal.

“If this conduct does not constitute stated misbehaviour, which is enough basis to remove the Chief Justice from office, what else will qualify as stated misbehaviour?” he asked.

Body of young woman found in gutter near Barracks Road — families urged to check if they know her

0

Photo: TwitterThe early hours of Thursday brought heartbreak to Udok Street in Uyo. A young woman’s body was discovered abandoned in a shallow gutter, just off Barracks Road. Her identity is still unknown, and police are appealing to the public for help.

Local residents were left shaken by the scene. Some passing by on their way to work stopped in silence. One woman whispered, “I couldn’t believe it… she looked so young. Someone out there must be looking for her.”

She was dressed in jeans and a black top, with no visible ID on her. Police believe she may have been dumped there overnight. No injuries were confirmed by officials yet, but a full investigation is underway.

Students from nearby campuses have taken to social media to share the photo in hopes that her family will come forward. “She looks like someone I’ve seen around UniUyo,” posted a user named Itoro. “Please, if you know her, say something. Her people deserve to know.”

For many, this is more than just a tragic discovery. It’s another reminder of how unsafe the streets can be for women. In 2025 alone, South Africa and surrounding regions have recorded over 12,000 female homicide cases, according to civil society reports. Many remain unsolved.

“I don’t know her name,” said a vendor near the scene, “but she looked like someone who had a future. And now we’re standing here, talking about a body.”

Police have asked anyone with information to contact the nearest station. They’ve also asked families with missing loved ones to visit the morgue at Uyo General Hospital. A case docket has been opened, and investigators are looking into possible leads from CCTV in the area.

As the sun went down, a few candles were placed near the gutter. Some young women stood there quietly, heads bowed, not knowing who she was — only knowing she didn’t deserve to be found like that.

If you know anyone who’s gone missing recently in Uyo or nearby towns, please check in with them. One phone call could help bring peace to a grieving family.

What do you think should be done to make our streets safer for young women?

An aspirant for the National Organising Secretary of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Suleiman Mustapha has appealed to journalists to vote for him in the upcoming June 30 elections. He promises to make the association more vibrant and prioritise the welfare of its members.

If elected, Mr Mustapha vows to establish a standing committee comprising lawyers, police, doctors, and psychologists to protect journalists’ rights.
“It must be an expensive enterprise to attack journalists,” he emphasized, underscoring his commitment to making it costly for individuals or organizations to assault or intimidate media practitioners.

As Editor of Graphic Business, Mr Mustapha asserts that he understands the challenges and triumphs of journalists in Ghana. He pledges to rejuvenate the welfare of GJA members, uphold the highest ideals of the profession, and create a safer, more supportive environment for all.

“I’m deeply concerned about the difficult working conditions many journalists face, often at great personal risk,” he said. “I’ll work tirelessly to restore the dignity and glory of our profession and promote the values of journalism that we hold dear.”

With his vision for a more effective and beneficial GJA, Mr Mustapha seeks the support of journalists to make a positive impact on the association and the profession as a whole.

Hassan Tampuli urges NDC to commend EC’s role in 2024 election

0

Member of Parliament for Gushegu, Hassan Tampuli, has called on the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to publicly acknowledge and commend the Electoral Commission (EC) for its role in conducting the last general elections.

Chairman of the NDC, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, on JoyNews’ PM Express, June 25, launched a scathing attack on the EC, declaring its entire leadership unfit for purpose and calling for their removal.

“There has to be a change,” he insisted. “The three top leadership must all go. They have managed the commission so badly.”

Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, June 28, Mr. Tampuli argued that the NDC, as the main beneficiary of the 2024 electoral outcome, had every reason to be the first to appreciate the work of the EC and its leadership, despite their previous criticisms.

“In any event, the NDC should be the first to even commend this Electoral Commissioner. In spite of whatever happened, you were able to get an emphatic mandate,” Tampuli said.

The NDC won a decisive parliamentary majority and secured the presidency in the December 2024 polls an outcome that, according to Mr Tampuli, underlines the credibility of the process despite the opposition’s earlier concerns over voter registration, collation processes, and alleged bias by the EC.

Tampuli reinforced his point by citing a widely accepted axiom in Ghana’s electoral politics:

“The former Electoral Commissioner even told us that ‘elections are won at the polling stations’. So what is the issue? No matter what the chairperson of the Electoral Commission does at her head office, the elections will be determined at the polling station,” he stated.

According to the Gushegu MP, this highlights the strength of Ghana’s electoral architecture, which empowers polling station results as the basis of national outcomes.

Ablakwa flags procurement breaches in contract signed by Former US Ambassador Alima Mahama

0

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has cited serious breaches of Ghana’s public procurement laws in a contract signed by former Ambassador to the United States, Hajia Alima Mahama, during her tenure at the Ghana Embassy in Washington, D.C.

Addressing a press briefing in Accra, Minister for Foreign Affairs Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa revealed that the Ministry found no evidence of procurement approval or legal clearance for a 2023 contract between the Embassy and a private company operated by a locally recruited staff member, Fred Kwarteng.

The contract, which covered courier and visa application services, was allegedly executed by the former Ambassador without authorization from the Ministry or the Public Procurement Authority.

“We have combed through all our records at both the headquarters and the mission, and there is absolutely no documentation indicating that this contract received ministerial or legal clearance,” Mr. Ablakwa stated.

He described the deal as a “flagrant violation of Ghana’s procurement laws and diplomatic service protocols.”

The revelation forms part of ongoing investigations into what the Minister described as a “sophisticated fraudulent scheme.”

Earlier, Mr. Ablakwa disclosed that a special audit had uncovered widespread malpractice at the Embassy, leading to disciplinary actions—including the immediate dismissal of Fred Kwarteng, who joined the Embassy’s IT Department on August 11, 2017.

According to the audit report and Kwarteng’s own admission, he created an unauthorized link on the Embassy’s website, diverting passport and visa applicants to a private platform he owned, where unapproved fees were charged.

The matter has since been referred to the Attorney-General for possible prosecution and the recovery of state funds.

In response to the findings, the Ministry has recalled all Foreign Affairs staff posted to the Embassy, dissolved the entire IT department, and suspended all locally recruited staff pending further investigations.

The controversial contract was signed with a company called Travel Ghana Secure Data Center, represented by Mr. Kwarteng, the former IT officer. The agreement granted him sweeping powers to operate courier services for visa and passport processing—without any regulatory oversight.

“Most troubling,” Mr. Ablakwa noted, “is that the contract contained no termination clause, no fixed duration, and no pricing controls—effectively allowing the service provider to charge applicants arbitrary fees indefinitely.”

“This is not just irregular; it is illegal. No public officer—certainly not an Ambassador—has the authority to enter into a financial agreement of this nature without adhering to Ghana’s procurement rules,” he added.

Mr. Ablakwa emphasized that under Ghana’s Public Procurement Act, all government entities must seek approval from the Public Procurement Authority for sole-sourced or restricted tenders. There was no evidence that such procedures were followed in this case.

“This contract would not survive even the most basic legal scrutiny. The lack of competitive bidding, the blatant conflict of interest, and the absence of cost controls are glaring red flags,” he said.

He also refuted recent public comments by the former Ambassador defending the contract, accusing her of attempting to mislead the public about the Ministry’s authority and procedures.

“She claims that ambassadors can independently sign such agreements. That is absolutely false. Even when contracts are initiated at the mission level, they must go through legal and procurement review by the Ministry. That process was completely ignored,” he said.

Mr. Ablakwa clarified that under the Ministry’s operational guidelines, contracts involving financial commitments are to be signed by the Head of Chancery—not the Ambassador—after receiving clearance from the Ministry.

“This control mechanism exists precisely to prevent the kind of abuse we are now confronting,” he said.

He contrasted the Washington contract with similar service agreements in other missions such as London and Beijing, which underwent proper procurement processes and included transparent fee structures and revenue-sharing terms.

“In the UK, applicants pay £45 for certain expedited services, with £7 remitted to the state. In the US and China, the standard fee is $55, with $7 going to the government. But the Washington contract allowed Mr. Kwarteng to charge arbitrary fees with no benefit to the state,” he said.

The Minister confirmed that the Ministry had submitted its full report to oversight bodies, including the Economic and Organised Office (EOCO) and the Office of the Attorney-General, for possible prosecution.

“We will not tolerate impunity or allow procurement infractions to be concealed under the guise of diplomacy. The law must apply to all—whether at home or abroad,” he asserted.

Mr. Ablakwa reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to protecting public funds and ensuring accountability in Ghana’s diplomatic missions.

“Our embassies must reflect the values of integrity, transparency, and good governance. This is not merely about a bad contract—it’s about safeguarding Ghana’s international reputation,” he concluded.

World Vision Ghana holds EWV adaptation training programme for Accra missions

0

Accra, June 28, GNA – World Vision Ghana (WVG) has held a training workshop for Christian faith leaders in Accra to sensitise them about its Empowered World View (EWV) model.

The EWV programme aims to empower church leaders to lead in environmental reform and preservation as well as improving the economic wellbeing of its members.

Pastors, church elders, and women’s ministry leaders attended the three-day training programme in Accra, where they learnt about the many forms of EWV and how they may benefit society.

Speaking at the training programme, Mr Benjamin Sarbah, the Faith and Development Manager at WVG, underlined the vital role faith leaders play in changing societal behaviours.

“As part of our role as the Faith and Development Unit at WVG, we ensure that we partner with churches so that they respond and pay special attention to the social needs of their members.

“So through this EWV programme, we look to shift and enhance the world view of pastors so that they can transform the hearts and minds of their members while equipping them with skills for their own economic empowerment,” he said.

Mr Sarbah added that the implementation of the EVW programme would sensitise the populace as to how they can benefit from the environment while preserving and conserving nature.

Pastor Bogobiri Seidu Abdul Latif, a participant at the workshop, said the event was very fruitful, as it has sensitised them on how to make their members better and to economically empower them.

“When we go back to our communities, we have to ensure that we become change makers with what we have learnt. Every community has its unique resources, and it is on us to identify them and utilise them to make the community better.

“One thing I learnt is that it is not only the gospel that can help the community but also teaching them the modern techniques and best practices for them to succeed in whatever they may be doing,” he said.

He further stated that the church could not do it alone, as they would need the help of all relevant environmental agencies to make this sensitisation drive on EWV, a success.

Ghanaian man opens up about how his wife denies him sex due to size of his manhood

A married man worried over unstable marriage due to his penis size A married man worried over unstable marriage due to his penis size

A Ghanaian man has revealed that his wife denies him sex because of the unusually large size of his penis.

Speaking on the Joy Prime Morning Show, the man, who called in anonymously, disclosed that his wife had been unhappy with the size of his manhood since the beginning of their marriage and frequently complained about it.

In an effort to save his marriage, he decided to purchase a penis enlargement product in the form of an ointment, which he applied regularly.

“Some time ago, when I was still married, I was boarding a bus from Kintampo to Kumasi. A man entered the bus advertising a penis enlargement product. It was an ointment that I had to rub on myself. I decided to buy it because my wife kept complaining,” he explained.

He said the product worked, significantly increasing the size of his penis.

However, this led to further complaints from his wife, who said she experienced pain during sex.

The man shared that, due to his wife’s discomfort, she now refuses to engage in sexual activity with him.

This has since compelled him to stop using the ointment, hoping the size might reduce over time.

“But now, she says it’s too big. Whenever I try to initiate sex, she turns me down, saying it hurts. So, I’ve stopped using it,” he said.

Donald Trump cuts off US trade talks with Canada

0

US President, Donald Trump US President, Donald Trump

US President Donald Trump has said he is cutting off trade talks with Canada “immediately” as the country looks to start enforcing a tax policy targeting big tech companies.

The latest move, which he announced on social media, comes as the neighbouring nations had been working to agree a trade deal by mid-July.

Both countries have imposed tariffs on each other’s goods after Trump sparked a trade war earlier this year and threatened to annex Canada using “economic force”.

On Friday, the US president said he was ending talks due to what he called an “egregious tax” on tech companies and added he would announce new tariffs on goods crossing the border within the next week.

“We are hereby terminating ALL discussions on Trade with Canada, effective immediately,” he wrote on social media.

“We will let Canada know the Tariff that they will be paying to do business with the United States of America within the next seven day period.”

In brief comments to reporters, Prime Minister Mark Carney suggested that talks would continue.

“We will continue to conduct these complex negotiations in the best interest of Canadians,” he said.

Canada’s 3% digital services tax has been a sticking point in its relationship with the US since the law was enacted last year. The first payments are due on Monday.

Business groups estimate it will cost American companies, such as Amazon, Apple and Google, more than $2bn a year.

Canadian officials had said they expected to address the issue as part of trade talks with the US.

There were hopes that the relatively warm relationship that newly-elected Carney has forged with Trump might help those negotiations.

The president’s latest move casts doubt on a future deal, though Trump has often used social media threats to try to gain leverage in talks or speed up negotiations he sees as stalling.

Last month, for example, he threatened to ramp up tariffs on goods arriving to US shores from the European Union, only to climb down a few days later.

Candace Laing, chief executive of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce which has been critical of the digital services tax, said that “last-minute surprises should be expected” as the deadline for a deal approaches.

“The tone and tenor of talks has improved in recent months, and we hope to see progress continue,” she added.

During Trump’s first term, the White House fought hard as many countries began considering taxes on digital services.

But Inu Malak, fellow for trade policy at the Council on Foreign Relations, noted that the issue was left unresolved in the trade deal the US and the UK reached earlier this year, suggesting some flexibility.

She said Trump’s threat seemed like a move to ramp up pressure out of his typical negotiating “playbook – but was also a sign the president had refocused on Canada, which could open the way for a deal.

“It does provide a bit of an opening – maybe not the one that Prime Minister Carney wanted … but it does provide some space for them to hasten those talks,” she said.

The US is Canada’s top trade partner, buying more than $400bn in goods last year under a longstanding free trade agreement.

But Trump hit that trade with a new 25% tariff earlier this year, citing concerns about drug trafficking at the border.

New US tariffs on cars, steel and aluminium have also scrambled relations. Car parts, for example, cross US, Mexican and Canadian borders multiple times before a vehicle is completely assembled and such import taxes threaten supply chains.

Trump later carved out exemptions for some goods in the face of widespread alarm from businesses in both the US and Canada, which has hit back with tariffs of its own on some US products.

Shares in the US fell on Friday after Trump said he was cutting off talks, but later bounced back with the S&P 500 closing at a record high.
