I’ve been threatened to resign or suffer harm – Torkornoo

0

Suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo has revealed that she has received threats aimed at forcing her to step down from office, amid an ongoing inquiry into petitions seeking her removal.

In an address to journalists in Accra on Wednesday June 25, Justice Torkornoo disclosed that some individuals have attempted to coerce her into resigning or retiring voluntarily by threatening her with personal harm.

“I have also received threats to the effect that if I failed to resign or retire voluntarily, I will be made to suffer some harm or the other,” she said.

Torkornoo also criticised the ongoing proceedings by the committee of inquiry probing petitions seeking her removal, suggesting the process is being handled more like adversarial courtroom litigation instead of a neutral fact-finding exercise.

She expressed concerns about the manner in which evidence is being presented and indicated that the legal representatives for the petitioners are exercising undue control over the information shared before the committee.

This, she contends, undermines the neutrality required in such inquiries and violates established protocols.

Torkornoo noted “The proceedings are being conducted as if it is a normal litigation between the petitioners and myself. Their lawyers now choose and pick which part of the evidence that public officials present to put on the table.”

Adding “This is also in violation of known rules regarding the proceedings of a committee of enquiry.”

Resigning is not an option – Chief Justice Torkornoo on removal proceedings

0

Suspended Chief Justice, Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo, has declared that she will not resign despite ongoing removal proceedings, which she described as unconstitutional and fundamentally flawed.

Speaking in a public address on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, Justice Torkornoo dismissed suggestions that stepping down would be the most prudent course of action, insisting that doing so would legitimise what she views as a dangerous abuse of the Constitution.

“Resigning or retiring during Article 146 proceedings is not an option for any judge or public official,” she said.

She argued that such a move would compromise the independence of the judiciary and embolden unlawful efforts to remove constitutionally protected officeholders.

“If I resign under these circumstances, I would be endorsing this flawed, opaque, and unlawful process. It is not acceptable,” she stated.

Justice Torkornoo also revealed that she had come under considerable pressure from both personal and external sources, including threats and veiled warnings, urging her to step down.

“I have heard from loved ones, concerned individuals, and others… Many suggest that, since these proceedings appear orchestrated to result in my removal as Chief Justice, I should retire or resign rather than endure an ill-motivated process,” she noted.

“I have also received threats and veiled warnings that, if I do not resign or retire voluntarily, I will suffer harm.”

She made it clear that her decision to remain in office was not motivated by a desire to cling to power, but rather by a duty to uphold judicial independence and defend the constitutional order.

“I am not clinging to a title or position. If I resign, I would be subjecting myself to two injustices: a judgment based on false claims, and the loss of earned entitlements,” she explained.

Justice Torkornoo warned that allowing her removal to proceed unchallenged would set a dangerous precedent for all judges and constitutional officeholders protected under Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution.

“Behind me stands every judge in the country. Behind me stand every commissioner or head of an independent constitutional body. If this process succeeds, it could be used against anyone,” she cautioned.

She cited a Supreme Court decision (J6/02/2019), which held that public officials subject to Article 146 investigations cannot abandon proceedings midway.

“No one can walk away from proceedings initiated by the state, as judgment can be entered against you for failing to defend yourself,” she said.

The removal process was triggered by petitions submitted to the President, leading to the formation of a committee in accordance with Article 146. Justice Torkornoo, however, stated that the process has lacked transparency and has been marred by intimidation.

“The situation I face has exposed a model of injustice I would never have thought possible had I not experienced it,” she said.

“It may be that these efforts are designed to frustrate me into resigning… As Chief Justice… I cannot flee when I know the implications of not defending false and unwarranted charges.”

Justice Torkornoo concluded that her decision to stay and fight the proceedings is not for personal gain, but to defend the credibility of Ghana’s democratic institutions.

“If the nation is willing to accept these developments… it must be understood that I sounded a warning, and the nation chose to remain passive,” she stated.

‘I am not seeking to claim to a title or a position’

Suspended Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkornoo, has said her decision to speak out is not born out of a desire to hold onto her position, but from a deep responsibility to defend justice and the rule of law in Ghana.

Addressing the press on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, she clarified that her actions are not motivated by personal ambition or a fear of losing her office, but by her constitutional duty as a legal professional to call out grave violations with regards to her suspension.

“I am not seeking to claim to a title or a position, however, as a lawyer of 38 years, a judge of 21 years, and Chief Justice who has served the rule of law all my working life, since I was 25, it is my duty and obligation to speak up concerning anything that is extremely wrong with the administration of justice in this country,” she noted.

Justice Torkornoo described the process for her removal as one rooted in a stated political agenda.

“This process was born out of a stated political agenda to remove me and control the judiciary,” she said, stressing that it is “a political effort that can only result in an outcome that was decided long before it started.”

She thanked all those who have shown concern for her safety and well-being but maintained that her stance is not personal.

“The situation I have been confronted with has shown me a model of injustice that I would never have thought possible if I had not been exposed to it, this is why, despite great personal discomfort, I have decided to marshal every effort in law and leadership to answer to the situation,” she remarked.

Justice Torkornoo further clarified that resigning or retiring while Article 146 proceedings are underway is not an option for her or any judge, citing a Supreme Court ruling with suit number J6/02/2019.

“Again, resigning or retiring while Article 146 proceedings are being conducted to remove a judge is not an option any judge or public official can even have. There is a decided case on the matter by the Supreme Court. The suit number is J6/02/2019. Again, no one has the authority to walk away from proceedings,” she noted.

Justice Torkornoo has insisted that her challenge is not just about her, but about protecting judicial independence and ensuring that future justices and heads of independent institutions can serve without fear of political retribution.

Her statement comes in the wake of a prima facie determination on three petitions filed for her removal, following which President John Dramani Mahama suspended her and appointed a five-member committee to investigate her conduct.

The Supreme Court has since unanimously dismissed her application for an interlocutory injunction against the committee.

It also struck out a supplementary affidavit she filed, citing disclosure of confidential information in violation of Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution, which governs the removal process for superior court justices.

Messi Set For PSG Reunion As Inter Miami Progress In Club World Cup

Lionel Messi

Lionel Messi will face former club Paris St-Germain at the Fifa Club World Cup as Inter Miami drew 2-2 with Palmeiras to reach the knockout stages.

A point was sufficient for both sides to progress and Tadeo Allende and Luis Suarez had Inter cruising at 2-0 in front of 60,914 fans at Hard Rock Stadium.

However, the Brazilian club scored two goals in the final 10 minutes – from Paulinho and Mauricio – to ensure they went through as winners of Group A on goal difference.

Inter finished second to set up the meeting with PSG, where Argentina forward Messi played from 2021 to 2023.

Elsewhere in Group A, Egyptian side Al Ahly conceded an 89th-minute equaliser to draw 4-4 with Porto.

Wessam Ali’s hat-trick for Al Ahly was cancelled out by goals from Rodrigo Mora, William and Samu Aghehowa before Mohamed Romdhane put Al Ahly 4-3 up in the 64th minute.

However, Brazilian winger Pepe’s dramatic late equaliser at Metlife Stadium ensured both sides exited the group phase with two points apiece.

Fifa opted to give the one qualifying spot available for the host nation of the Club World Cup to Inter Miami.

It was a decision interpreted by many as an attempt to ensure Messi, one of football’s most iconic figures, took part in the tournament.

However, they have proved their worth, becoming the only team from the United States to reach the knockout phase – with both Los Angeles FC and the Seattle Sounders eliminated.

Did you have any experience before becoming MP? – Nana B questions Adomako Kissi [Audio]

0

The National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye, has criticised former Anyaa-Sowutuom MP, Dr Dickson Adomako Kissi, over his comments regarding the composition of the party’s national executives.

Dr Kissi had argued that, unlike the National Democratic Congress (NDC), the NPP’s national executives lack parliamentary experience — a shortcoming he believes weakens the party’s strategic direction.

But Nana Boakye, popularly known as Nana B, described the remarks as misplaced during an interview on Adom FM’s .

While acknowledging that the current executives may not have parliamentary backgrounds, he argued that they possess expertise from diverse professional fields, which makes them competent and capable.

“If Dr Kissi’s argument is anything to go by, was he ever an MP before his election in 2020?” he questioned.

“We need to be measured in our language. These same ‘experienced’ people he’s referring to have also lost elections before, so what exactly is his point?

“I was Deputy Director of the National Service Scheme, so I have experience in corporate governance. The General Secretary managed a huge institution like the Youth Employment Agency. John Boadu, for instance, was never an MP but served successfully as General Secretary — with a wealth of experience across various party roles. We in the NPP have our own unique strengths too.”

Court fines two fish mongers for receiving stolen tilapia

0

By Gifty Amofa

Accra, June 25, GNA – The Amasaman Circuit Court has fined two fish mongers, Lady Ayawah and Faustina Kattah, 100 penalty units each, equivalent to GH¢1,200.00, for dishonestly receiving stolen tilapia, valued at GH¢100,000.00.

The two women pleaded guilty and were convicted on their own plea.

Their respective lawyers pleaded for mitigation before the court handed down the fines.

The court is presided over by Justice Enid Marful-Sau, a High Court Judge with additional responsibilities at the Circuit Court.

Felix Banini, a fisherman alleged to have stolen the fish, is currently on the run and a bench warrant has been issued for his arrest.

Presenting the case, Police Chief Inspector Frederick Awuah-Ansah told the court that the complainant, Mr Joseph Alobuia, is a commercial tilapia farmer with fish cages on a section of the Densu River at Joma in the Ga Central Municipality.

Banini, along with Ayawah and Kattah, were residents of Ablekuma-Agape Down and were known as fishermen and fish mongers.

According to Chief Inspector Awuah-Ansah, on May 25, 2025, at around 0100 hours, Banini took his canoe to the Densu River at Joma and stole a quantity of fish from Mr Alobuia’s cages.

The next day, Mr Alobuia discovered the theft, estimating the value of the stolen tilapia at GH¢100,000.00. He returned home and began a search for the perpetrators.

During his search, he identified some of his stolen tilapia in the possession of Lady Ayawah and confronted her.

Lady Ayawah, prosecution said; “in the process mentioned Banini as the person who sold same to her during the previous night.”

On June 2, 2025, with the help of other fishermen in Agape Down, Mr Alobuia apprehended Banini and handed him over to the police.

Banini admitted to the theft in his caution statement, stating that he sold GH¢850.00 worth of tilapia to Lady Ayawah and another GH¢1,200.00 worth to Faustina Kattah.

Both Ayawah and Kattah admitted the offence during police investigations and were subsequently charged and brought before the court.

Banini, however, failed to appear in court and currently being sought by police, prosecution said.

Commodity dependence threatens Ghana’s economic future

Professor Bokpin criticises Ghana's economic framework on primary commodities Professor Bokpin criticises Ghana’s economic framework on primary commodities

Professor Godfred Bokpin, a distinguished economist and finance professor at the University of Ghana, has strongly criticised the country’s economic framework, pinpointing its overwhelming reliance on primary commodities.

At the Joy Business Economic Forum, he disclosed that Ghana’s export earnings remain heavily skewed towards unprocessed commodities, with gold, cocoa, and crude oil accounting for over 70%, a pattern remarkably consistent since 1957.

“Since independence, the sustainability of our economy is still based on primary commodities,” he said.

He noted that the country’s over-reliance on primary commodities is a major impediment to sustainable growth and development.

He asserted that Ghana’s economy is not resilient, suggesting that short-term gains are largely driven by global factors rather than meaningful changes within the domestic economy.

He mentioned the economy’s high exposure to external shocks and underscored the pressing necessity for diversification to ensure long-term stability and growth

‘I had no hand in Bishop Osei Bonsu’s death’ – Pastor Love

0

Pastor Love Hammond (pictured) has debunked claims that he killed Bishop Osei Bonsu play videoPastor Love Hammond (pictured) has debunked claims that he killed Bishop Osei Bonsu

Controversial Ghanaian cleric, Pastor Love, has addressed long-standing allegations linking him to the death of the late gospel musician, Bishop Osei Bonsu.

In an interview with Kwaku Manu, shared on social media on June 23, 2025, Pastor Love, reflected on his past friendship with the late musician while recounting a dispute between them that reportedly ended in the trade of curses.

He explained that the misunderstanding arose from a controversy surrounding a song he had composed for the late musician.

Recalling the incident, Pastor Love said it all started when Bishop Osei Bonsu approached him after being diagnosed with a brain tumour and asked for a song to help raise funds for surgery.

“He came to me and said he had been diagnosed with a brain tumour. He asked me to compose a song so he could generate income from it to fund his surgery. I wrote the song and invested money in the recordings,” Pastor Love narrated.

He added, “He told me the song could bring in GH¢1 billion, so I gave him the master copy. I asked that he return GH¢200,000 to me and use the rest for his medical treatment.”

However, Pastor Love alleged that Bishop Osei Mensah Bonsu sold the song to a third party, Osewus, for GH¢700,000 without his knowledge or any form of payment.

“I was at Osewus one day when I heard the song playing. I asked about it and was told Bishop Osei Mensah Bonsu had sold it to them. When I confronted him, it led to a heated argument. I told him that if he didn’t pay me back, an angel without forgiveness would deal with him,”

Pastor Love said that despite his side of the story, the media massively sided with the late Bishop, portraying him (Love), as the villain.

“He started bleeding from the nose and went on several radio stations claiming I had cursed him. But the media never asked him what he did to provoke that reaction. I explained that he had duped me and I needed my money, but no one listened,” he added.

Pastor Love strongly denied any involvement in the gospel musician’s death and expressed disappointment in the media reports.

“Instead of advising him to return my money so I could pray for him, people spread rumours that I killed him. I had no hand in his death whatsoever,” he said.

Suspended Chief Justice Torkornoo addresses Ghanaians

0

Gertrude Torkornoo has been suspended from office as the Chief Justice play videoGertrude Torkornoo has been suspended from office as the Chief Justice

The stage is set for the much-anticipated address by suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo.

Torkornoo, who is being investigated by a five-member committee following the establishment of a prima facie case based on petitions alleging misconduct, is making history as the first suspended Chief Justice to address the nation while under investigation.

Present at the event, which is taking place at the Holiday Inn Hotel, is her husband, Francis Torkornoo, who is there to show his support.

Her address comes on the back of the Supreme Court’s dismissal of her supplementary affidavit.

The court, in a unanimous decision on May 28, 2025, ruled that the supplementary affidavit disclosed information that, under Article 146 of the Constitution, is required to be kept in camera.

Accordingly, the court struck out the affidavit.

In her supplementary affidavit filed on May 26, 2025, Torkornoo alleged that her fundamental rights were being violated.

According to her, the committee ignored the pending court case and continued to schedule hearings.

She also claimed she was subjected to distressing conditions during her appearance before the committee, including being searched, having her electronic devices confiscated, and being denied entry alongside her spouse and children.

“Other developments, like the denial of access into the hearing room for my husband and children, searches on my body, denial of access to telephones and laptops for myself and my lawyers (even though counsel for petitioners have access to their phones and laptops), and the conduct of the hearing itself in a high-security zone at the premises of the Castle, Osu, show a deliberate effort to subject me to mental torture and degrading treatment in violation of my fundamental rights,” she stated.

Additionally, she raised concerns about the committee’s decision to permit third parties to testify on behalf of the petitioners rather than requiring the petitioners to present their own evidence.

Justice Torkornoo’s suspension was announced on April 22, 2025, following the establishment of a prima facie case based on three separate petitions alleging misconduct.

President John Dramani Mahama, acting in accordance with Article 146(6) of the 1992 Constitution and after consultations with the Council of State, constituted a five-member committee to investigate the matter.

Big loss – Piers Morgan reacts to Thomas Partey’s exit from Arsenal

0

Thomas Partey will leave Arsenal at the end of June 2025 Thomas Partey will leave Arsenal at the end of June 2025

Arsenal fan and British broadcaster Piers Morgan has expressed disappointment over Thomas Partey’s impending departure from the club, branding it a “big loss” in what he described as an “underwhelming” transfer window so far for the Gunners.

The outspoken media personality took to X to voice his concerns following reports that Partey will leave the North London club at the end of June after failing to agree on a contract extension.

“Big loss. This is a very underwhelming transfer window so far for Arsenal,” Morgan wrote.

The Ghanaian midfielder, who joined Arsenal from Atlético Madrid in 2020 for £45 million, will now depart as a free agent after four seasons in North London.

While injuries hampered parts of his time at the Emirates, Partey’s technical quality, strength, and control in midfield were widely appreciated, especially in high-stakes matches.

According to multiple sources, talks between the player’s camp and Arsenal stalled in recent months, with no breakthrough in sight.

As a result, Partey is now on the verge of sealing a move away, with Saudi Arabian clubs reportedly circling with attractive offers.

His exit comes amid a broader reshuffle at Arsenal, who are preparing for the 2025/26 season with renewed ambitions after falling just short in the Premier League title race last term.

Manager Mikel Arteta and sporting director Edu are believed to be targeting replacements, with Brentford’s Christian Nørgaard emerging as a top candidate.

Partey’s departure, however, has drawn mixed reactions from fans. While some believe it’s time to move on from the injury-plagued midfielder, others, like Morgan, see the loss of the Ghanaian as a blow to the team’s core strength and experience.

The consummate CJ that I know is not likely to resign, but… – Tuah-Yeboah

0

Former Deputy Attorney General, Mr. Alfred Tuah-Yeboah has described suspended Chief Justice, Gertrude Araba Esaaba Torkornoo, as a consummate law practitioner prepared to see processes through.

He therefore expects her to fight to the end, the processes seeking to remove her from office, particularly so since she has denied all the allegations made against her.

Tuah-Yeboah was speaking in an interview with JoyNews moments before the CJ addressed the nation in what she says are abuses she is going through in the hearing of the petitions against her.

“As to the issues that she is going to address we do not know, but definitely it is my expectation that she will touch on the removal proceedings pending against her. As to whether she will resign, I think I know the suspended CJ, she is a consummate jurist, and she understands due process, and I do not think, I may be wrong, that she may want to tread along that line. But who knows, let’s wait and see.”

NSA Awaiting Funds To Complete Accra Sports Stadium Stand – DG

0

Yaw Ampofo Ankrah

DIRECTOR-GENERAL of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, says the Authority is still awaiting funds to complete renovation works on the closed Independence Square Stand at the Accra Sports Stadium.

The stand was shut in March ahead of Ghana’s 2026 World Cup qualifier against Chad due to safety concerns and ongoing maintenance. Despite initial hopes of completing the repairs shortly after the match, the stand remains inaccessible to fans.

“There are challenges here that we must address. We are still waiting for the release of funds to complete one of the stands to allow it to be at its capacity,” Ampofo Ankrah said.

He added that several contracts were awarded under the previous administration for stadium maintenance, but the necessary audits are yet to be finalised. “It would be premature to conclude anything now, but from what myself and my team have seen, the situation at some of our venues is not looking good.”

The Accra Sports Stadium is likely to host the Black Stars again in September when the World Cup qualifiers resume. The NSA hopes the pending funds will be released in time to complete the repairs before the next international fixture.

The Authority is also awaiting a full report from the Ministry of Sports and Recreation to determine what work was done and what remains outstanding.

A.M.A clamps vehicles for violating revised street loading hours

0

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (A.M.A.) has begun clamping vehicles found flouting the newly revised loading and offloading hours within the city, as part of ongoing measures to ease congestion and enforce discipline in the capital.

This follows the Assembly’s recent directive, which limits all street loading and offloading activities to the hours between 6:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. daily.

The new time regulation forms part of the A.M.A.’s intensified decongestion enforcement efforts across major trading and business zones.

Head of the Public Affairs Unit at the A.M.A., Gilbert Nii Ankrah, said before the enforcement, the Assembly had cautioned that any vehicle found contravening the directive would be towed at the owner’s expense and the offenders prosecuted at the A.M.A. Sanitation Court.

“We introduced this time restriction to reduce daytime congestion and safeguard both pedestrians and traders during peak hours,” he explained.

He noted that the Assembly had taken proactive steps to ensure public awareness of the new policy before implementation, adding that the Information Services Department (ISD) of the A.M.A. had deployed a mobile public address system across the metropolis to announce the changes in both English and local languages.

“We are not just enforcing, we’re informing. Our ISD officers are broadcasting the new directive daily to ensure everyone understands the rules,” he stressed.

The Head of Public Affairs emphasised that the clampdown forms part of a broader strategy to consolidate the progress made in the ongoing decongestion exercise and to reinforce a culture of order, discipline, and urban cleanliness in Accra.

He disclosed that since the directive took effect, vehicles found offloading goods outside the approved timeframe in areas such as the Central Business District and parts of Makola had been fined, reiterating that the operation would be sustained and extended to other hotspots in a bid to restore full control over urban space usage during working hours.

He urged all drivers, delivery vans, and commercial transport operators to strictly adhere to the designated street loading hours and to make use of approved terminals, off-street loading bays (car parks), as well as designated delivery zones provided across the metropolis, especially within high-traffic areas such as the Central Business District (CBD) to avoid any inconvenience.

BudgIT Ghana to launch report on informal sector tax compliance June 26

0

BudgIT Ghana, in partnership with the International Budget Partnership (IBP) and the Society for Women in Taxation (SWIT) Ghana, is set to unveil a landmark research report that probes into the tax compliance behaviours of informal sector workers in the Greater Accra Region.

The report, titled “Ghana’s Untapped Economy: Analysis of Tax Compliance Behaviour of Informal Sector Workers in the Greater Accra Region,” will be launched on Thursday, June 26, 2025, at The Signature in Shiashie, Accra.

The event is expected to bring together stakeholders from the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), Ministry of Finance, local government authorities (MMDAs), development partners, academia, civil society, and representatives of the informal sector.

Despite accounting for over 70% of Ghana’s workforce, the informal sector contributes less than 2% to national tax revenue, according to figures from the GRA — a disparity the report describes as indicative of deep systemic issues.

The research, conducted using a mixed-methods approach, highlights several challenges facing the sector, including:

* Limited understanding of tax obligations and rights
* A culture of enforcement rooted more in fear than in civic responsibility
* Gender disparities in compliance and tax administration
* Widespread mistrust in public financial management and government accountability

According to the report, these factors have created a disconnect between tax policy and the day-to-day realities of informal sector workers — a gap that must be closed to achieve a fairer and more inclusive tax system.

Jennifer Moffatt, Country Manager for BudgIT Ghana, described the report as “a call to action for evidence-based reform that acknowledges the crucial role of the informal economy in Ghana’s development.”

“The informal sector is not invisible. It is vibrant, resilient, and central to Ghana’s economic life.

“Our research offers actionable recommendations to policymakers on how to build trust, improve compliance, and create a tax system that truly reflects the realities of all Ghanaians,” she said.

The launch will include panel discussions, data presentations, and dialogue among government officials, civil society leaders, and informal sector representatives. Organisers hope the event will serve as a catalyst for policy reforms that support fiscal justice and promote shared responsibility in national development.

BudgIT Ghana is a civic technology organisation that uses data storytelling and digital innovation to simplify public finance and encourage active citizenship. This new report underscores its commitment to driving transparency, accountability, and inclusive governance in Ghana.

Choose problem-solvers, not religious and tribal bigots – Kufuor warns NPP

0

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has cautioned members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to rise above religious and tribal sentiments as the party prepares to elect its flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.

Speaking at the launch of the party’s new think tank, the Patriotic Institute, on Wednesday, 25 June, Mr Kufuor urged the NPP to remain committed to democratic values and choose a leader who can offer real solutions to the country’s problems.

His comments come in the wake of internal tensions and personal attacks against some potential aspirants following the party’s announcement that its flagbearer election will be held on 31 January, 2026.

With early jostling for leadership heating up, Mr Kufuor’s words were a timely reminder for party members to focus on substance over sectarianism.

“We are a democratic party and we uphold common humanity,” the former President said.

“In a democracy, we don’t go for tribe or religion or gender but the individual. It is one man, one vote, and if we want power, we have to present a person who will be convincing to the generality of the electorate.”

He stressed that the party’s choice must be guided by the candidate’s ability to tackle the pressing issues facing Ghanaians.

Mr Kufuor warned that perpetuating identity politics only reinforces negative stereotypes.

“We’ve been brushed by our opponents as a tribal party — and these days, we are even adding religion. If these things come from our own mouths, then I tell you, we are perpetuating it ourselves,” he lamented.

He urged the party to “tell the truth to ourselves” and focus on selecting a leader who can unify the country and “help solve the problems of the community at large, so it benefits and spreads across the board for all.”

The ruler of Eswatini, King Mswati III, landed in Kumasi on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, ahead of his much-anticipated visit to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

The rich culture of the African continent was on display to the world when Asanteman received King Mswati III at the Prempeh I International Airport, in Kumasi.

Dressed in a beautiful emahiya, the traditional attire of Eswatini, Mswati III was warmly welcomed by a delegation from the Manhyia Palace, led by the Paramount Chief of the Juaben Traditional Area, Nana Otuo Siriboe II, who were all clothed in beautiful kente.

Before the king could exchange pleasantries with the delegation, the chief linguist of the Asantehene, Otumfoɔ Akyeamehene Nana Nsuase Poku, poured a libation to welcome him to Asanteman.

Afterwards, Nana Otuo Siriboe II and the other members of the delegation were captured greeting Mswati III and his entourage.

Among the entourage of the King of Eswatini were royals, including his wives, whom the people of Ghana have been cautioned not to look at directly.

The beautiful traditional clothing, the singing, drumming and dancing that met the king were indeed a sight to behold.

Ghana’s showbiz people only get active during elections – Kojo Akoto Boateng

0

Kojo Akoto Boateng, co-host of Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, has bemoaned the lack of unity and strategic planning within Ghana’s creative sector, attributing much of its stagnation to individualism and short-term political interests.

Speaking on Hitz FM’s Daybreak Hitz with Doreen Avio, Kojo observed that the sector’s most noticeable activity often aligns with election seasons, where personal political alignment takes precedence over long-term development.

“What I’ve noticed about the showbiz space is that we get active during elections and people largely follow their stomachs and we are so divided,” he said, comparing the fragmented approach of creative industry players to that of stakeholders in the agricultural sector, who he believes are more concerned with collective welfare than political affiliation.

His comments came as the United Kingdom announced a £30 million investment package for its music and wider creative industries, forming part of a broader 10-year strategy aimed at unlocking economic growth, nurturing talent and supporting innovation across sectors like fashion, film, gaming, and design. The plan is expected to generate an additional one million jobs and boost the UK economy by £50 billion by 2030.

By contrast, Ghana’s creative industry continues to battle with structural issues such as inadequate funding, weak policy implementation, and limited infrastructure. Despite its wealth of talent, the country has no clear long-term development blueprint for its cultural and creative economy. Attempts to support the sector have often been piecemeal, politicised or short-lived.

Stakeholders have frequently lamented the lack of a national creative fund, minimal training opportunities, poor enforcement of intellectual property laws, and the absence of platforms that allow local talent to scale globally. Major government-led initiatives are rare, and private sector partnerships remain underdeveloped due to high risk and limited incentives.

Kojo Akoto Boateng’s remarks reflect growing frustration among industry insiders who feel the sector is being neglected despite its potential to contribute significantly to national development. He called for creatives to rise above partisanship and work towards a united front that prioritises institutional development, policy engagement and long-term advocacy.

As countries like the UK invest heavily in their creative economies, many believe Ghana risks falling further behind if deliberate action is not taken to professionalise and support its own cultural sectors.

How Mr Ibu’s daughter, 14 other women were defrauded in fake romance scheme

0

A new documentary released by Nigerian media personality Chude Jideonwo has exposed a shocking romance scam in which about 15 Nigerian women, including the daughter of the late actor Mr Ibu, shared experiences about how they were defrauded through TikTok by a man posing as an American suitor.

The documentary, which gained traction on social media on June 25, 2025, saw Jasmine Okafor, daughter of the late Nollywood star Mr Ibu, in particular, recounting how she was scammed out of approximately $13,000 by a man she believed was a genuine romantic partner.

It may be recalled that Jasmine went viral in November 2022 after abruptly ending her marriage of just nine months.

Speaking on this, she explained that the relationship was based on lies and deception, under the guise of love and marriage.

According to Jasmine, the scam began in December 2021 during a TikTok live game, where Jay Love appeared as a generous viewer.

“I was live with someone I met on TikTok, and we were playing a game. Jay Love started sending her gifts to win against me. After the game, he messaged me, and we exchanged numbers. That’s how it all started. We spoke every day. What got me attached was the attention he gave me,” Jasmine shared.

Despite noticing red flags early on, Jasmine said she ignored them because she believed the man’s American identity made him trustworthy.

Jasmine said as their virtual relationship grew, she began entrusting him with her earnings from TikTok, especially funds she needed help withdrawing from PayPal.

She said the trust developed gradually, starting with $100 and eventually growing to $13,000, all of which she saved with him.

“I told him instead of transferring the money, he should bring it in cash when visiting Nigeria,” she explained.

Jasmine further revealed that she even paid for his flight from the U.S. to Nigeria. Upon his arrival, Jay Love presented her with cheap, fake jewellery and chocolates.

She said items she had asked him to purchase, including an iPhone 13 and cosmetics, were never delivered, and he offered excuses for each missing item.

“He said he wanted to propose and even asked to use some of the money I’d given him to buy a ring. But nothing was genuine,” she said.

Nana B rejects early endorsements within NPP, calls for unity ahead of 2028 polls

Henry Nana Boakye is the National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party Henry Nana Boakye is the National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party

The National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye, popularly known as Nana B, has expressed disapproval over the increasing trend of internal endorsements for presidential hopefuls within the party.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s on June 25, 2025, Nana B warned that such endorsements, especially from organised groups, risk dividing the party as it prepares for the 2028 general elections.

“We all want party cohesion. When former MMDCEs endorse one candidate and another group supports a different one, it creates unnecessary tension. That is why I don’t support such endorsements,” he said.

His comments come in the wake of recent declarations by some former Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) backing specific flagbearer hopefuls.

Nana B described the public declarations as premature and cautioned that they could derail ongoing efforts to maintain unity within the party.

He revealed that the party leadership has scheduled a meeting with all presidential aspirants on July 3, 2025, to address the situation.

“This is one of the reasons the leadership of the party has called a for meeting with all presidential aspirants. We want to talk to them about the guidelines the National Council has approved and advise them to speak to their followers so that we can maintain some sanity before the elections,” he explained.

When asked whether he personally supports any of the aspirants, Nana B responded emphatically, that national executives are expected to remain neutral.

“I don’t have a choice. We, as national officers, do not have a preferred candidate. Whoever the party elects to lead us, we will fully support,” he stated.

He also clarified that no disciplinary action has been taken against the former MMDCEs involved, adding that the party hopes to resolve the matter through dialogue.

“We are not punishing anyone. This meeting is to help provide guidance so that everyone will be on the same page moving forward,” he indicated.

Solomon Adjetey is the Chief Director at the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition Solomon Adjetey is the Chief Director at the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition

Ghana has reaffirmed its strong support for regional energy integration efforts, as stakeholders gathered in Accra for a high-level meeting on the future of West Africa’s power integration.

Speaking on behalf of the Minister of Energy and Green Transition at WAPP 330kV Double Circuit Côte d’Ivoire–Ghana Interconnection Reinforcement Project in Accra, the Chief Director at the ministry, Solomon Adjetey stressed the importance of the project to fostering sustainable energy development in Ghana.

According to him, Ghana’s energy sector has lagged for the last decade, with the country now experiencing an average output in terms of electricity generation.

“We are truly delighted to host you today as we take a decisive step forward in our shared vision for regional energy integration. This study represents the outcome of rigorous analysis and collective technical effort. Its findings will shape our decisions as we move toward realising this critical infrastructure,” he stated.

The study, developed through months of technical collaboration, is expected to guide the next steps toward implementation of the project seen as a cornerstone for future regional energy trade.

Adjetey further reaffirmed the government’s commitment to fully support the functioning of the framework and execution of the project to boost Ghana’s energy generation mix.

“This framework will not only facilitate the implementation of the project but also ensure that our collaboration is grounded in mutual trust, transparency, and shared responsibility. As the host institution, I wish to reaffirm the full availability and commitment of the Hon. Minister to actively support the functioning of this cooperation framework. We are ready to contribute our expertise, resources, and institutional support to ensure the timely and successful execution of this project,” he added.

Why Olympique Lyon have been relegated to Ligue 2

0

Olympique Lyonnais have been relegated to the Ligue 2 Olympique Lyonnais have been relegated to the Ligue 2

For the first time in over three decades, Olympique Lyonnais, one of France’s most iconic football clubs, face the prospect of playing in Ligue 2.

On Tuesday, June 24, 2025, the French football authorities confirmed the club’s administrative relegation due to long-standing financial difficulties and failure to meet regulatory requirements.

But how did a club of such stature and history get here?

The financial collapse

Lyon’s troubles began last autumn when they reported a staggering debt of €505 million, including over €160 million in short-term liabilities, a sharp €61 million increase from the previous year.

This financial instability triggered alarm bells at the Direction Nationale du Contrôle de Gestion (DNCG), French football’s financial watchdog.

The DNCG provisionally relegated Lyon in November 2024, pending efforts to resolve their fiscal issues.

Since then, club officials, including President John Textor and sporting director Michael Gerlinger, have scrambled to convince the authorities otherwise, without success.

Failed efforts to reverse the decision

Despite selling their American NWSL side OL Reign and even parting with their shares in the Groupama Stadium (OL Vallée Arena), Lyon’s financial fixes weren’t enough, or perhaps came too late.

A final plea to the DNCG earlier this week reportedly failed to sway the panel, despite Textor’s optimism.

“We’ve made various investments in recent weeks. Everything is good financially,” he told L’Équipe just days before the ruling.

Those investments included Textor selling his 45% stake in Premier League side Crystal Palace for €200 million, and the €42 million transfer of Rayan Cherki to Manchester City.

Still, the DNCG was not persuaded. Their decision to uphold the relegation means Lyon will now drop to Ligue 2, unless a final appeal, which the club intends to lodge, proves successful.

What now for Lyon?

Lyon’s fate currently hangs in the balance. If the appeal fails, the club must begin life in Ligue 2 next season.

That will likely trigger a summer of tough decisions, balancing the books while trying to maintain a squad competitive enough to secure immediate promotion.

The sale of Rayan Cherki may help financially, but weakens the team. Further exits could follow, with big earners like Alexandre Lacazette, Nemanja Matic, and Corentin Tolisso reportedly among those who could be moved to ease financial strain.

Adding to the uncertainty, Lyon’s spot in next season’s UEFA Europa League is now under review. The UEFA Club Financial Control Board has yet to assess their eligibility, and if denied, their place could go to RC Strasbourg.

A fall from grace

From a dominant side that once won seven consecutive Ligue 1 titles in the 2000s, Olympique Lyonnais now find themselves on the brink of crisis.

The road to redemption will require not just financial restructuring but also a reimagining of the club’s identity and long-term vision.

For now, Lyon must wait and hope that their appeal can turn the tide. If not, next season’s journey through the second tier of French football will be as humbling as it is historic.

Patriotic Institute is a powerful reminder the NPP is a movement of ideas – Afenyo-Markin

0

Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has described the newly launched Patriotic Institute as “a true call for loyalty” and urged members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to be firmly rooted in the party’s values and ideological tradition.

Speaking on behalf of the minority caucus in Parliament at the launch of the institute held at the NPP headquarters, Afenyo-Markin said the centre would help the party sharpen its message and prepare its leaders to meet Ghana’s changing political realities.

“This institute marks a new chapter in the intellectual and ideological life of the NPP,” he said.

“It is the clearest institutional expression of our party’s enduring commitment to development in freedom, to principled leadership, and to the constant renewal of the values that have defined the NPP since its inception.”

He called attention to the party’s record over the past three decades, highlighting its role in democratic governance and policy innovation.

“Our liberal democratic foundations are not just philosophical concepts,” he said. “They have produced results from the NHIS and school feeding programme under former President Kufuor, to Free SHS and Agenda 111 under former President Akufo-Addo.”

However, Afenyo-Markin cautioned that past achievements alone were not enough.

“In a world that is growing more urban, more complex and competitive, how do we ensure that we remain relevant?” he asked. “Conviction alone is not enough. We must be able to articulate our beliefs with clarity, depth and confidence to the people of Ghana.”

He said the Patriotic Institute was created as a direct response to that challenge.

“It will serve as a living archive of our party’s journey, a centre of ideological formation, policy innovation, and a training ground for the next generation of NPP leaders,” he said.

“It will empower our communicators with history and strategic clarity, and equip every member to not only defend our record but to articulate with confidence the visions and values that make our tradition distinct.”

The minority leader also stressed the importance of the institute to Parliament itself, saying it would help guide MPs in their legislative roles.

“As your leader in parliament with my colleagues supporting the calls of our party, let me emphasise how critical this initiative is, not just for the party but for parliament itself. The patriotic institute should be the fulcrum through which the NPP nurtures its leaders and shapes our policy conversations in Parliament.”

“With this institute, NPP Members of Parliament will no longer enter the chamber as individuals alone, but as custodians of an intellectual tradition, men and women grounded in our constitution, policies and the philosophy of the Danquah-Busia-Dombo tradition,” he said.

He underscored the political edge the institute could provide in shaping national conversations.

“This, I believe, will lead to a tougher, value-driven scrutiny of our opponent’s policies. It will allow us to propose better, bolder and more visionary solutions to the challenges facing Ghanaians, alternatives that are not just populist responses but principles grounded in our beliefs and reflective of our long-standing commitment to inclusive development. That is true leadership.”

“This institute is a powerful reminder that the NPP is not merely a political party, it is a movement of ideas,” he added.

Firefighters contain blaze at Accra Arts Centre despite lack of hydrants

0

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has successfully contained a fierce fire outbreak that engulfed multiple wooden structures at the Arts Centre in Accra on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, despite battling critical challenges, including the absence of functional fire hydrants.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, June 25, the GNFS confirmed that the fire, which involved more than 50 wooden structures used for both commercial and residential purposes, was brought under control without any injuries or fatalities. Investigations are currently underway to determine the exact cause of the blaze.

The incident, reported at 6:20 p.m., had already escalated by the time the initial firefighting team from the Ministries Fire Station, led by ADO I Tahiru, arrived at 6:26 p.m. With the fire in an advanced stage and no working hydrants in the vicinity, four additional fire engines were quickly dispatched from the Electoral Commission, Accra City, Parliament, and the Greater Accra Regional Headquarters Substation to reinforce the firefighting efforts.According to them, the Firefighters managed to bring the situation under control by 7:00 p.m., and the fire was completely extinguished by 8:44 p.m. While the blaze destroyed over 50 wooden structures and their contents, the swift and coordinated response from the fire teams prevented it from spreading further, successfully salvaging several nearby structures.
The GNFS emphasised the importance of functional firefighting infrastructure and reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property. The Service has urged city authorities and property owners to prioritise fire safety measures, particularly in high-risk, densely packed areas like the Arts Centre.
Tuesday’s fire left several traders and residents devastated, with many counting heavy financial losses. As investigations continue, victims are calling on the government for urgent support to rebuild their livelihoods.

Electricity tariffs go up by 2.45% effective July 1

0

The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has announced that, effective July 1, electricity tariffs will increase by 2.45% across the board.

There will be no increase in water tariffs. The adjustmentshave been carried out in line with the Commission’s Quarterly Tariff Review Mechanism, tracks and incorporates movements in key factors which are beyond the control of the Utility ServiceProviders (USPs), namely the exchange rate between the US$ and the Ghana Cedi, domestic inflation rate, the electricity generation mix, and the cost of fuel, mainly natural gas.

Waylead’s Willow Lane project targets comfortable living for Ghana’s elderly

Willow Lane is designed for retirees, elderly homeowners, and multi-generational families play videoWillow Lane is designed for retirees, elderly homeowners, and multi-generational families

An innovative housing development, Willow Lane, spearheaded by Waylead Properties, is set to redefine residential living for Ghana’s aging population by prioritising accessibility, dignity, and long-term comfort.

Located in a serene and secure enclave at Lashibi, Willow Lane is purposefully designed for retirees, elderly homeowners, and multi-generational families seeking age-friendly living options.

The development features modern two-storey, four-bedroom townhouses equipped with private elevators that provide direct access to the master bedroom, a first of its kind in Ghana’s residential real estate market.

Managing Director of Waylead Properties, Keegan Wang speaking with GhanaWeb Business on June 21, 2025, said the project was inspired by the evolving needs of homeowners, particularly the elderly, who require comfort without compromising on independence or luxury.

“We are building for people who value convenience and dignity, especially in their golden years,” Wang said.

“At Waylead, we listen closely to our clients. One thing that kept coming up was the difficulty elderly people face climbing stairs to access their master bedrooms. That’s why every Willow Lane townhouse comes with a built-in elevator that goes straight to the master suite,” he added.

Wang emphasised that Willow Lane is not just a housing project, but a lifestyle shift, one that blends thoughtful architecture with compassionate design.

“This is more than a home. It’s a safe, elegant space where elderly residents can live with confidence and families can plan for a future of comfort,” he added.

Each unit also offers customizable design options tailored to residents’ needs, such as mobility-friendly bathrooms, emergency response systems, and non-slip flooring.

The development includes landscaped gardens, walking trails, and community recreation spaces, all designed to foster wellness and a sense of belonging.

Kwasi Appiah arrives in South Africa to finalize Kotoko’s pre-season plans

0

Interim Management Committee (IMC) member of Asante Kotoko, Kwasi Appiah, has arrived in South Africa to engage in high-level discussions regarding the club’s upcoming pre-season tour.

The former Ghana national team coach and influential Kotoko figure is in the country to finalize arrangements concerning the training base for the team as well as possible pre-season friendly matches ahead of the 2025/26 Ghana Premier League season.

Sources close to the club indicate that Appiah’s visit includes meetings with potential host facilities, sports complexes, and representatives of South African clubs for possible friendly encounters during the team’s stay.

The move forms part of Kotoko’s broader plan to ensure a well-structured and competitive pre-season to prepare the squad physically and tactically under a new technical leadership, as the club undergoes a major rebuild.

Kotoko are expected to spend part of their pre-season outside Ghana, a strategy designed to improve team cohesion, expose the players to higher-level opposition, and enhance brand visibility.

An official announcement regarding the team’s exact base and pre-season schedule is expected once Appiah concludes his mission in South Africa.

TAEF condemns Kenya news blackout directive over live coverage of Gen-Z protests

0

The African Editors Forum (TAEF) has condemned unreservedly the directive issued by Kenya authorities to TV stations not to give live coverage to the country’s Gen-Z protestors.

In a statement issued by the continental group of editors and signed by its President, Churchill Otieno, and copied to Ghana Business News, TAEF strongly condemns the directive issued by the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) instructing television broadcasters to cease live coverage of the ongoing Gen-Z demonstrations.

The CA has issued a directive ordering TV and radio stations to desist from doing live coverage of the protests happening today, June 25, 2025, failing which regulatory action would be taken against them.

“This move represents a serious affront to media freedom, the public’s right to information, and the constitutional guarantees that underpin Kenya’s democracy,” the statement said.

TAEF states that live broadcasting is a legitimate journalistic practice that allows citizens to witness events as they unfold, fostering transparency and enabling accountability. By attempting to silence live coverage, the CA undermines not only the independence of the media but also the democratic right of Kenyans, especially young people, to express themselves and be heard.

“We are particularly concerned that this directive comes at a time when trust between citizens and institutions is strained. In an age of synthetic reality, deepfakes, and digitally manipulated narratives, a news blackout is dangerously counterproductive. When mainstream media is gagged, misinformation and conspiracy theories thrive. Authorities must not create conditions that hamper information integrity by driving citizens to rely solely on unverified, and often misleading, sources of information,” the statement added.

TAEF urges that instead of suppressing coverage, authorities should focus on ensuring that law enforcement upholds the rights of protesters and respects the freedoms enshrined in Kenya’s Constitution, including the freedom of expression, freedom of the press, and the right to peaceful assembly.

The organization further expressed solidarity with Kenyan journalists and media houses committed to telling the story of this pivotal moment with professionalism, accuracy, and courage, urging the Communications Authority to immediately rescind this directive and reaffirm its commitment to media independence and constitutional order.

“We further call on all regulatory agencies to act within the confines of the law, uphold international standards on freedom of expression, and engage constructively with the media sector rather than resorting to censorship.

The future of democracy in Africa, and indeed the legitimacy of public institutions, depends on an informed citizenry, not on the concealment of public dissent..

Journalism is not a crime. It is a vital pillar of democracy and public accountability. The safety, independence, and dignity of journalists must be upheld at all times,” TAEF said.

NPP 1st Vice Chair apologises after demanding dismissal of all national executives

0

First National Vice Chairman of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dankwa Smith Butey, has apologised after calling for a complete overhaul of the party’s current leadership.

The NPP National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye, popularly known as Nana B, disclosed this in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem.

“Chairman has apologised to the National Council for his statement. It was wrong and unfortunate, and I don’t want to go into it because he has apologised unreservedly. He was not forced to apologise, but we sometimes say things and we realise they were wrong,” he stated.

Chairman Butey had stated that the current national executives failed to deliver on their mandate and must be replaced ahead of the 2028 general elections.

He made these comments in an earlier interview on Dwaso Nsem in May 2025, citing the NPP’s defeat in the 2024 general elections as a major setback that warrants change.

When asked if he shared Chairman Butey’s views, Nana B disagreed, stating that political party organisation is a different matter altogether.

He argued that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) suffered significant electoral defeats in the past with President John Mahama as candidate and Johnson Asiedu Nketia as General Secretary.

“We never thought Mahama would even become President again because he suffered a defeat badly, but he was repackaged and brought back. The NDC also rewarded Asiedu Nketia by voting him as Chairman,” he explained.

Otoobour Gyan Kwasi II commissioning the facility

The Chief of Aburi, Otoobour Gyan Kwasi II has commissioned an Information Communication Technology (ICT) laboratory for Nsaakye Basic School in the Akuapem South District of the Eastern Region.

The facility, funded by the Otoobour Foundation, is expected to boost digital skills as well as facilitate teaching and learning at the school.

Speaking at a ceremony to commission the ICT lab, the Chief of Aburi, who also doubles as the Adontenhene of the Akuapem Traditional Area, said the development of communities thrives on education.

According to him, it was therefore imperative for him to support the people of Aburi and surrounding communities, especially in the area of education, which will go a long way to augment the efforts of government in the provision of education infrastructure.

The chief also mentioned that apart from Nsaakye, the rest of the communities will also be provided with ICT laboratory to  equip  most students in the Akuapem district with the  requisite knowledge in ICT,  given the evolving  technological landscape.

He said, “Our children have dreams, goals to pursue, and these can only be realised if all stakeholders including you and I support them. Government cannot do it all alone; that is why it’s important we support the young ones to acquire the necessary skills in ICT, especially at a time when digital skills are crucial for teaching and learning.”

Headmaster of Nsaakye MA Basic School, Mr. Joy Kretsi, for his part, said the gesture does not only mark a transformative step in the education of young people in  ICT, but will also prepare learners for the world of work.

He also urged the teachers to utilise the ICT facility to explore new teaching methods, to integrate digital learning and inspire the students to think critically to solve problems through technology.

Mrs. Esther Keddey, Human Resource Manager at the Akuapem South Education Directorate, who thanked management of Otoobour Foundation, also promised to collaborate with the teachers to help maintain the ICT lab.

Post-election sentiments swing in favour of Kennedy Agyapong – Rocky Obeng

0

Former Western North Regional Minister, Joojo Rocky Obeng, has asserted that post-2024 political developments within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) now strongly favour former Assin Central MP, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, over former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia in the party’s race for the 2028 flagbearer slot.

Speaking on Channel One TV on Tuesday, June 24, Mr Obeng acknowledged that the 2024 presidential election, in which Dr Bawumia led the NPP, initially gave the former Vice President a compelling edge. However, he believes internal dynamics have since shifted.

“Election 2024 made a stronger case for Dr Alhaji Bawumia,” Obeng noted. “But post-election 2024, the party base and elections that are ahead of us, in my considered view, are making a much, much stronger case for Kennedy Ohene Agyapong.”

His comments come at a time when the NPP is witnessing intense early jockeying ahead of its January 2026 presidential primary. Several prominent figures, including Dr Bawumia, Mr Agyapong, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, and Dr Bryan Acheampong, are all positioning themselves as viable successors to lead the party into the 2028 general elections.

In recent months, Dr Bawumia has received high-profile endorsements from groups such as the Forum of Former MMDCEs and a coalition of 60 sitting Members of Parliament.

These endorsements have bolstered his image as the frontrunner. However, Kennedy Agyapong also commands a significant following at the grassroots level and remains popular among party loyalists who view him as an outspoken and independent-minded alternative.

The party’s leadership has cautioned against open endorsements, with National Organiser Henry Nana Boakye (Nana B) recently criticising such public declarations as divisive and counterproductive.

The NPP has since summoned all flagbearer aspirants to a crucial meeting on July 3 to reinforce internal cohesion ahead of the primary.

Rocky Obeng’s remarks reflect a broader sentiment that the race remains open, with both internal party dynamics and public sentiment continuing to evolve.

As the NPP gears up for a pivotal decision on its future leadership, aspirants are intensifying engagement, building strategic alliances, and deepening their presence within the party’s rank and file.

‘Ken Agyapong shouldn’t be allowed near the presidency’- Suhuyini

0

A photo collage of Hamza Suhuyini and Kennedy Agyapong A photo collage of Hamza Suhuyini and Kennedy Agyapong

A member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) communication team, Hamza Suhuyini, has stated that former Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, lacks the temperament to be the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

He argued that the NPP flagbearer hopeful has consistently shown a pattern of behaviour that undermines democratic discourse, incites division, and erodes the values of civility and tolerance that Ghana’s political system is built on.

According to him, Kennedy Agyapong does not inspire confidence in his ability to unite the country, manage dissent, or conduct himself with the decorum expected of a President.

“We cannot afford to let someone like Kennedy Agyapong get close to the presidency. It’s too risky for the NPP, for the NDC, and for the entire country.

“This is a man who, on live TV, called for violence. He thrives on chaos. Even within the NPP, he injects toxic energy. We saw his reckless behavior when President Mills was in power. He doesn’t belong anywhere near the Flagstaff House,” he remarked.

Suhuyini stressed that Ghana’s democracy cannot be handed over to “a rogue element” like Agyapong.

“As Ghanaians, we must draw the line. Characters like him must be kept far away from leadership. The NDC will not be part of any process that risks Ghana’s peace and stability,” he added.

In his view, the former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia remains the NPP’s best candidate for now, despite internal opposition.

“I think that Dr Mahamudu Bawumia still stands tall,” he noted.

Meanwhile, the party’s National Executive Committee and National Council made the decision to hold the presidential primary on Saturday, January 31, 2026, after a crucial meeting on June 17, 2025.

Nominations for the primary are expected to open from December 2 to 6, 2025.

Filmmaker arrested for threatening to shoot police officers

Israel Agbo Forson is a filmmaker Israel Agbo Forson is a filmmaker

Ghanaian filmmaker, Israel Agbo Forson, has been arrested by the police following the circulation of a viral video in which he was captured making some disturbing remarks.

Forson, a 32-year-old resident of North Legon, was seen in the viral video, believed to have been self-recorded and posted on his social media handles, threatening to open fire on law enforcement officers without hesitation.

The video reportedly followed an incident in which he was stopped by police for a search of his vehicle.

In the footage, Forson appealed to the Inspector General of Police, COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno, urging him to enroll officers in workshops aimed at improving their conduct, particularly during roadside duties.

“I’m sending this message to IGP. If you don’t sit down with your police people and school them on how they attend to people on the street, see, next time when I strap, I will shoot somebody and it will be a case. This is the third time this thing is happening. This is a warning. I swear to God, this is a warning. IGP just do your work. If I’m strapped and I see anything that’s misconduct, I won’t bring it to court. I will shoot,” he warned.

However, his remarks sparked public outcries, leading to his arrest by the Accra Regional Police Command through an intelligence-led operation at his residence on June 23, 2025.

According to a police statement dated June 24, 2025, the suspect has been granted police enquiry bail and is assisting with investigations.

“On Monday, 23rd June 2025, an intelligence-led operation resulted in the arrest of the individual identified in the video as Israel Agbo Forson, a 32-year-old filmmaker residing in North Legon,” the police statement said.

The statement added, “The suspect is currently on police enquiry bail and is assisting with ongoing investigations.”

The police service strongly condemned the suspect’s actions, describing them as unlawful.

It reiterated its commitment to carrying out its duties, maintaining law and order, and apprehending individuals who break the law.

“The Ghana Police Service once again condemns in the strongest terms acts of incitement, threats, and obstruction against law enforcement officers. Such conduct is not only unlawful but also undermines public peace and the authority of the Police. The Command assures the public that it remains committed to maintaining law and order and will take the necessary steps to bring persons who engage in criminal acts to justice,” it added.

Suspended Chief Justice Torkornoo to address Ghanaians on June 25

0

Gertrude Torkornoo has been suspended from office as the Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo has been suspended from office as the Chief Justice

Suspended Chief Justice, Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo, is set to address the nation today, Wednesday, June 25, 2025.

According to a report by Law Platform, Justice Torkornoo’s address is expected to focus on her suspension and the petitions filed by some Ghanaians seeking her removal from office.

The report adds that her address will take place at the Holiday Inn Hotel, with the media expected to cover and broadcast the event.

Gas Processing Plant II committee presents report to energy minister Gas Processing Plant II committee presents report to energy minister

The Implementation Committee for the Second Gas Processing Plant (GPP II) has presented its final report to the Steering Committee at the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition.

This marks a significant milestone in Ghana’s efforts to enhance domestic gas processing capabilities and strengthen energy security to support industrial and power sector development.

The gas plant is expected to save Ghana up to $1 billion annually by reducing reliance on liquid fuel imports.

It is also projected to recover Natural Gas Liquids (NGLs) valued at approximately $151 million per year and to generate over 2,500 direct and indirect jobs during both the construction and operational phases.

Additionally, the plant is set to position Ghana as a regional hub for gas processing and energy exports.

The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, stated that the gas processing initiative is part of the government’s strategy to secure energy independence.

“Today’s submission reflects our commitment to advancing Ghana’s gas future. GPP II is not merely a project; it is a crucial tool for achieving energy independence, fostering job creation, and driving industrial transformation. We commend the Committee for its dedication and clarity, and we are determined to act swiftly on its recommendations,” he said after receiving the report from the committee.

The Minister also extended sincere gratitude to the Chairman of the Core Technical Committee, Richard Gyan-Mensah (MP) and Deputy Minister for Energy & Green Transition, the Project Development Coordinator, Guure Brown Guure, and all Implementation Committee members for their relentless efforts, strategic insights, and unwavering dedication to the national interest.

The Ministry reaffirmed the government’s full commitment to ensuring that the GPP II project progresses smoothly into execution, unlocking Ghana’s gas potential for long-term value and inclusive growth.

Paul Pogba signs 2-year deal with AS Monaco

0

French international, Paul Pogba French international, Paul Pogba

Paul Pogba is poised to revive his career with a two-year deal at AS Monaco.

The 32-year-old has been a free agent since parting ways with Juventus in November 2024 and has now accepted a significant pay cut to join the Ligue 1 club.

Pogba had offers from clubs in the Middle East and Major League Soccer, but opted for a return to French football.

According to French outlets Le Parisien and Foot Mercato, Pogba reached an agreement with Monaco on Sunday, June 22, 2025, following several days of negotiations.

The midfielder had travelled to the region in early June to meet club officials and assess off-pitch logistics, including accommodation and security arrangements.

His last professional appearance came in September 2023 for Juventus against Empoli, shortly before he tested positive for DHEA, a banned substance.

Initially suspended for four years, Pogba’s ban was reduced to 18 months by the Court of Arbitration for Sport, and he became eligible to play again in March 2025.

AS Monaco, who finished third in Ligue 1 last season and qualified for the Champions League, wasted no time in pouncing on the opportunity to sign the France international.

Monaco’s interest in Pogba dates back to the winter transfer window but the move was put on hold due to financial limitations and concerns about his fitness.

With Pogba eager to return to action and open to a salary reduction, Monaco seized the opportunity as talks between him and other potential suitors stalled.

A highly experienced player with 91 France caps, including being part of the 2018 World Cup-winning squad, his signing is a major coup for Monaco and Ligue 1.

At least 120 children have been abducted by insurgents in Mozambique, rights group says

0

At least 120 children have been kidnapped by jihadist rebels in northern Mozambique in recent days At least 120 children have been kidnapped by jihadist rebels in northern Mozambique in recent days

At least 120 children have been kidnapped by jihadist insurgents in northern Mozambique in recent days, Human Rights Watch (HRW) said Tuesday, warning of a rise in abductions in the country’s troubled Cabo Delgado province.

The children are reportedly being used by an Islamic State–linked group known locally as al-Shabab to transport looted goods, perform forced labor, and in some cases serve as child soldiers or be forced into marriage.

Mozambique has been battling the Islamist insurgency in Cabo Delgado since 2017. Government forces have struggled to contain the violence, relying on support from troops sent by Rwanda, South Africa, and other regional partners.

In 2020, the insurgents carried out a wave of attacks in which they beheaded dozens of people, including children. Witnesses have said that children abducted from towns and villages have been used as fighters in subsequent attacks.

The violence has displaced more than 600,000 people and spilled into neighboring provinces, according to the United Nations. HRW said there had been a resurgence of attacks and child kidnappings in the last two months and called on Mozambique’s government to do more to find the children and prevent further abductions.

The problems in Cabo Delgado were largely overshadowed by Mozambique’s deadly and long-running post-election protests last year. Cabo Delgado has also been battered by several recent cyclones and hurt by US President Donald Trump’s cuts to foreign aid.

The secretary general of the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC), Jan Egeland, visited Cabo Delgado this month and described the situation in northern Mozambique as a neglected crisis.

“Climate shocks, increasing violence and spiraling hunger are having a terrible impact on the population,” Egeland said.

The NRC said more than 5 million people faced critical levels of hunger and more than 900,000 people faced emergency hunger conditions.

Musicians shouldn’t be boxed into one genre – Maya Blu on Highlife debate

0

Ghanaian artiste Maya Blu has shared her thoughts on ongoing calls for musicians to prioritise highlife music as a way of preserving Ghana’s cultural identity.

Speaking in an interview on , a YouTube series hosted by JoyNews’ Jacquline Ansomah Yeboah, Maya Blu said the music industry is evolving and artistes should not be limited to a single genre.

“The world has evolved, and people are just doing what audiences love,” she said.

According to her, the move away from highlife by younger artistes should not be seen as a rejection of tradition but rather an expression of creative freedom.

“Everyone is doing what they do best, and we have to respect that,” she added.

Her comments come amid growing concern from veteran musicians and cultural commentators over the perceived neglect of highlife music by today’s artistes.

Once Ghana’s dominant genre, highlife is known for its rich guitar rhythms, brass instrumentation, and lyrical storytelling. It played a foundational role in shaping Ghana’s popular music and influenced modern genres like hiplife, Afrobeat, and more recently, Afropop.

However, critics argue that contemporary musicians are shifting focus to Afrobeats, amapiano, and other global trends, raising fears about the gradual erosion of Ghana’s musical heritage.

As the debate over preserving highlife continues, Maya Blu’s remarks highlight the tension between cultural legacy and artistic evolution — a dilemma many young musicians are grappling with today.

It’s better to be a messenger of a ruling party than a General Secretary in opposition – Kufour reminds NPP members

0

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has issued a reminder to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) about the realities of political power.

According to the statesman, “it is better to be a messenger of a party in power than the general secretary of a party in opposition.”

He reechoed this sentiment during the launch of the NPP’s newly established Patriotic Institute, a certificate-awarding institution designed to deepen ideological education, build leadership capacity, and strengthen the party’s readiness for governance.

The event, held today in Accra, saw key party figures in attendance, including General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong, who stressed the institute’s role in reshaping the NPP’s future.

Addressing the NPP members, Mr Kufour insisted that the objective of every political party is to win power, adding that all resources and deliberation must have that as the central idea.

The former President’s statement comes at a critical juncture for the NPP, which has been grappling with internal divisions and early jostling for the 2028 flagbearership just months after its defeat in the 2024 general elections to the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

His concerns echo recent revelations by Okaikwei Central MP Patrick Boamah, who disclosed that Kufuor has been deeply troubled by the NPP’s waning internal cohesion and lack of strong leadership since its electoral loss.
