Seek bail review in court, not public space – Sukparu tells Wahab’s Lawyers

0

Member of Parliament for Sissala West, Mohammed Adams Sukparu, has urged the legal team of former National Food Buffer Stock Company CEO, Abdul Hannan Wahab, to avoid politicising the bail conditions set by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), and instead seek redress through the courts.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Tuesday, July 1, Sukparu emphasised that suspects who consider bail terms excessive have the legal right to apply for a variation.

“When you are detained and granted bail, and you think the bail condition is too much for you to provide, you can go to court for it to vary,” he explained.

He cautioned against turning the matter into a political debate, stressing the need to allow EOCO to carry out its investigations without interference.

“I will use this opportunity to urge the lawyers that we should not do politics with it. They should use the right thing, which is the court, to seek the variation so that they can grant them bail for EOCO to also continue with its investigation,” he said.

His comments come in the wake of the arrest of Abdul Hannan Wahab and his wife during a coordinated EOCO operation in Accra and Tamale on Wednesday, June 25, 2025.

The two are being investigated for alleged offences including tax evasion, money laundering, and causing financial loss to the state.

Mr. Wahab was granted bail of GHS 50 million with two sureties, both to be justified, while his wife received a GHS 30 million bail under similar terms.

Government launches national secretariat to oversee all anti-galamsey operations

The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources has inaugurated a new intelligence-led secretariat to serve as the central coordinating body for all anti-illegal mining operations nationwide.

The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) is a product of inter-agency collaboration aimed at addressing the environmental devastation caused by illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.

In a statement issued by the Ministry’s Director of Communications, Ama Mawusi Mawuenyefia, it was noted that the Secretariat’s core function is to initiate, coordinate, and supervise all activities geared toward combating illegal mining and its associated harms.

“The objective of NAIMOS is to create a well-coordinated framework to guide the nationwide crackdown on illegal mining,” the statement read.

The Ministry also stressed that no individual or group—formal or informal—will be permitted to embark on any anti-illegal mining operation without prior consultation and approval from the Secretariat.

“For the avoidance of doubt, all anti-galamsey operations, swoops, and raids conducted without the express authorisation of NAIMOS are strongly discouraged,” Ms Mawuenyefia added.

The Ministry believes this centralised approach will ensure consistency, accountability, and efficiency in the fight against illegal mining, which continues to pose a significant threat to Ghana’s natural resources and water bodies.

‘Nobody will harass you under NDC’

0

A private legal practitioner and member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) communications team, Hamza Sayibu Suhuyini, has praised the NDC for fostering an environment that protects and encourages dissent, press freedom, and civic expression.

Addressing recent criticisms from the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) on TV3’s “New Day” on Tuesday, July 1, Suhuyini asserted that such open criticisms are indicative of the NDC’s tolerance for opposing views.

“It is exciting because it shows that during the reign of a particular political party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), dissenting views, which is a fundamental pillar of democratic governance, is encouraged,” he stated.

He argued that under the NDC’s leadership, citizens can voice their criticisms of the government without fear of political retaliation or state harassment.

“There is no way you speak your mind and find it difficult to go home,” Suhuyini declared.

“Even if your views go against the government, you are rest assured that nobody will use state power to harass you,” he said.

Referring to recent attacks on journalists in the country, Suhuyini drew a veiled comparison between political regimes, suggesting the NDC upholds civil liberties more consistently than its opponents.

“I’m pretty much convinced that you have come to accept that your freedoms were meddled on the streets in broad daylight like we witnessed in the past. May the soul of Ahmed Suale rest in peace,” he stated.

Suhuyini urged institutions like the GBA to appreciate the democratic space they operate within, attributing it to the NDC’s steadfast commitment to Ghana’s constitutional freedoms.

“These freedoms we represent simply constitute a manifestation of our commitment to the fundamental laws of this country,” he said.

I woke up to people trolling me and my marriage over my tired face

Highlife musician, Akwaboah Jnr Highlife musician, Akwaboah Jnr

Ghanaian highlife musician Akwaboah Jnr has opened up about the emotional toll of online trolling, recounting how he felt hurt when he got attacked over a picture he took earlier in the year.

The “I Do Love You” hitmaker shared his ordeal during an interview on Okay FM on June 30, 2025.

Explaining his appearance in the photo that sparked the trolling, Akwaboah recounted a stressful workday in which he performed at a show outside Accra and had to travel to and from the city overnight.

“I had a show at Kwahu. I had to leave Accra at 8:30 in the evening, got there at midnight, did my show and a little meet and greet, and then had to get back to Accra. I got back at 7 am and still had to go to church because I can’t miss church.

“So, I didn’t sleep throughout that night. And I was so tired. After church, my wife insisted on taking a picture and decided to share on social media. Then I went to sleep. Only to wake up and some people had zoomed into my tired face and were saying things on social media about me and my marriage,” he recounted.

Despite the harsh comments, Akwaboah stated that he and his wife were not bothered by the comments.

“People mocked my looks, claimed marriage aged me, and even dragged my wife. But their trolling doesn’t pay my bills,” he said.

The musician lamented the general attitude of Ghanaians toward celebrities, stating, “I don’t know why we have reduced the industry to this. Because it is only in Ghana that we do this. But there is a wise saying that you are what you say. So, if you say bad things about people, the same will happen to you.”

GoldBod to crack down on illegal gold trading after GhanaWeb’s illegal gold market documentary

0

The Ghana Gold Board has issued a stern warning to individuals trading gold without a license, following GhanaWeb’s recent documentary, which uncovered numerous shops in Wassa-Akropong operating without the necessary permits.

The documentary, titled “The Gold Market That Fuels Galamsey,” highlighted the proliferation of unlicensed gold shops in the Western Region town, where the lucrative nature of gold trading has driven widespread illegal small-scale mining.

Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board, Sammy Gyamfi, has warned that anyone trading gold without a valid GoldBod license will be arrested and prosecuted.

Addressing journalists on June 30, 2025, Gyamfi stated, “If you are not licensed by the Ghana Gold Board, you are committing a crime if you buy gold or engage in any form of gold trading.”

He emphasised that traders holding licenses under the now-defunct Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC) regime can no longer operate unless they reapply under the new GoldBod system.

“We will no longer continue to recognize licenses issued under the old regime,” he added.

On compliance, Gyamfi noted that President John Dramani Mahama is set to inaugurate the GoldBod Taskforce to clamp down on illegal gold trading, gold smuggling, and price distortions in the gold market.

“With the establishment of the Gold Board and the integration of the task force under the direction of President Mahama and the Minister of Finance, we hope to intensify the fight against smuggling. The approach so far has been ad hoc. We have been relying on national security personnel on a temporary basis.

“So, you realise that anytime we deploy national security, the market becomes disciplined. But when they are withdrawn, illegal activities quickly resume,” he said.

Sammy Gyamfi stressed that the new task force will be permanent and will serve as a constant enforcement presence in the gold market.

“This time around, we are not going to recall them. We will have a permanent, standby force protecting the national interest, ensuring that everyone trading in gold is licensed.

“To have a license means we have your data, we’ve conducted the necessary due diligence on you, we know the source of the funds you’re using to trade in gold, and we can confirm that it’s clean money, not connected to money laundering or terrorism financing,” he explained.

According to Gyamfi, these initiatives form part of the government’s broader agenda to combat illegal mining and safeguard the environment.

Gold coin is a strategic measure to discourage the hoarding of US dollars Gold coin is a strategic measure to discourage the hoarding of US dollars

Prices of the Bank of Ghana’s (BoG) gold coins have increased slightly in response to the performance of the cedi against the dollar on the interbank foreign exchange market.

The Central Bank introduced the gold coins as a strategic measure to discourage the hoarding of US dollars.

As of Tuesday, July 1, 2025, the bank reported the following updated prices:

– The 0.25 oz coin is now selling at GH¢9,427.45, up from GH¢9,386.83 on June 30, 2025.

– The 0.50 oz coin is priced at GH¢18,139.84, down from GH¢18,058.60.

– The 1.00 oz coin is selling for GH¢35,606.98, down from GH¢35,444.48.

According to the Central Bank, the initiative is designed to absorb excess liquidity in the market and help strengthen the Ghana cedi against major foreign currencies.

The Ghana gold coin is available in three denominations: one-ounce, half-ounce, and quarter-ounce, and it is being sold through commercial banks.

The Mayor has pledged to reward Kotoko players with $200 for every goal they score against their arch-rivals, with an extra incentive to hit five goals and pocket a total of $1,000.

Speaking at the team’s training grounds on Monday, June 30, where he was accompanied by Ashanti Regional Minister Frank Amoakohene, Ofori Agyemang urged the players to make the Ashanti Region proud by putting Hearts to the sword.

“We want you to give us five goals. Every goal you score, you will earn $200. We will bring the money to the stadium. If you can score the five goals, you will earn $1,000. So, on Sunday, just make sure you beat Hearts of Oak for us,” he told the squad.

The Porcupine Warriors will lock horns with their old rivals on Sunday, July 6, at the Accra Sports Stadium, with kick-off at 4 pm.

President John Dramani Mahama is expected to be in the stands for the much-anticipated clash between the country’s two most decorated clubs.

US to deny visas to Ugandans seeking ‘Birth Tourism’

US to deny visas to Ugandans seeking 'Birth Tourism' US to deny visas to Ugandans seeking ‘Birth Tourism’

The US Mission in Uganda has issued a statement warning Ugandans planning to travel to the United States for the primary purpose of giving birth, stating that such practices are considered “birth tourism” and are not permitted under US immigration policy.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter) shared on July 1, 2025, the US Mission Uganda said consular officers will deny visa applications if they have reason to believe the applicant intends to travel for childbirth to secure U.S. citizenship for their child.

“Using your visa to travel for the primary purpose of giving birth in the United States so that your child will have U.S. citizenship is not permitted,” the post reads. “Consular officers will deny your visa application if they have reason to believe this is your intent.”

The Mission further noted that many Ugandan parents holding tourist visas have traveled to the United States with the aim of delivering children, often relying on American government assistance to cover medical costs.

“These costs are passed on to the American taxpayer,” the Mission added, saying that such parents “may not be eligible to renew their visas in the future.”

The message comes at a time of growing scrutiny by US immigration authorities, particularly in cases where visitors appear to exploit visa categories meant for temporary stays.

“Birth tourism” has long drawn criticism from US policymakers who argue that it strains public resources and undermines immigration integrity.

The Trump administration continues to tighten access to the US for immigrants from specific countries to protect their interests. Visa overstays and immigration fraud have also been cited as reasons for considering travel bans for countries like Uganda, Nigeria, Tanzania, and Sudan.

In June, the Department of State was considering travel restrictions for Ugandans as concerns about immigration misuse remain high, especially where birthright citizenship is involved.

The US Embassy requires visa applicants to be transparent about the purpose of their travel, warning that misrepresentation can result in future ineligibility for US visas.

The announcement by the mission in Uganda is part of a broader effort by the US Department of State to curb birth tourism and maintain the integrity of its visa system.

There are an estimated more than 30,000 Ugandan immigrants in the US, contributing the highest remittances among the diaspora community. Most Ugandans travel to the US to seek better education and healthcare.

Okyeame Kwame Hints At Government Collaboration

Okyeame Kwame

Celebrated Ghanaian musician and entrepreneur, Okyeame Kwame, has revealed plans to embark on a landmark project with the government before the end of the current administration.

In an interview with George Quaye on Joy Prime television’s PrimeTime, the award-winning rapper said his academic commitments had delayed his engagements with state institutions, but discussions are ongoing.

“Because of school, I have been a little busy. Research and literature review. I have been a little busy so I have not had the time to pay courtesy calls on [the right institutions],” he said.

When asked whether he had political affiliations, Okyeame Kwame clarified: “You know I am ‘Made in Ghana’.”

“But I have visited KOD, we have had conversations, and hopefully, I will go and water those conversations, and I think something amazing will come out. Before the end of this four years, I will do something with government and it will be historic,” he stated.

Though he did not disclose details, the announcement has sparked public interest in what the collaboration may entail, especially considering his longstanding involvement in national campaigns.

Okyeame Kwame, known in showbiz circles as ‘the Rap Dacta’, has consistently used his influence to promote Ghanaian identity, culture and responsible citizenship. He served as the face of the Ministry of Trade and Industry’s Made in Ghana campaign and has been a key advocate for health and environmental awareness initiatives, including hepatitis B screenings and climate action.

He has also been actively engaged in arts education, creative industry policy advocacy, and sustainability campaigns, earning him both national and international recognition.

If realised, the proposed project could further strengthen ties between Ghana’s creative sector and state institutions, adding to Okyeame Kwame’s legacy as one of the country’s most socially engaged creatives.

Ghana lacks coordinated policy to tackle growing slum crisis – Urban Governance Expert

0

Urban governance and sustainable development expert, Farouk Braimah, has criticised Ghana’s failure to adopt a clear, coordinated national strategy to address the country’s growing slum crisis, despite years of political pledges and scattered interventions.

Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show with Bernard Avle on Tuesday, July 1, Mr. Braimah noted that Ghana continues to grapple with the challenge of informal settlements due to the absence of a concrete slum development or prevention policy.

His remarks follow the release of a new Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) report, Slum and Informal Settlements in Ghana, which revealed that 30.8% of the country’s urban population—about 4.8 million people—live in slums. This figure surpasses the global average of 24.7%, though it remains below the Sub-Saharan African average of 53.9%.

“One of the key points I want to raise, even though it is getting better, is that we do not have any planned policy,” Braimah stated.

“As a country, we’ve been battling issues of urban poverty since the late ’90s and early 2000s, but we still do not have an operational slum plan or policy that guides government interventions.”

He acknowledged that the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Ministry of Local Government had previously developed a draft national slum prevention policy. However, he lamented its lack of implementation.

“I think that document must be given some oxygen to be implemented at the district level,” he stressed.

Mr. Braimah also blamed poor investment planning and fragmented institutional responsibilities for the deepening crisis.

“As a country, we’ve not invested in key areas in a coordinated way. Issues of drainage, transport, sanitation, and housing are all interconnected. When efforts are compartmentalised, the impact is lost,” he noted.

He further argued that spatial plans created by many city authorities fall short of real infrastructure transformation due to the absence of actionable, physical designs.

“This again tells you that our local government system is not functioning as it should,” he said.

Mr. Braimah called for immediate cross-sector collaboration and the empowerment of local authorities to implement comprehensive, long-term solutions to slum development.

Dr Kofi Amoah calls for establishment of National Rescue Fund

0

Ghanaian businessman and philanthropist, Dr Kofi Amoah, has called for the creation of a National Rescue Fund (NRF) aimed at supporting vulnerable citizens.

He said the NRF had become necessary to provide support to Ghanaians facing immense hardship, particularly in sectors like healthcare and education.

Dr Amoah in the appeal for the Fund posted on the X Platform, said he was ready to donate GH¢100,000 to the yet-to-be-established NRF as soon as it was set up by the Ministry of Finance.

The Philanthropist stated that the NRF would help the country and its younger generation, indicating that “If implemented, the NRF would serve as a powerful symbol of civic unity, responsibility, and hope in a time of national distress.”

Dr Amoah entreated the Minister of Finance, Dr Ato Forson, to consider his proposal and spearhead the establishment of the Fund, ensuring it was easily accessible to contributors through MoMo, bank transfers, cheques and other secure channels.

“I suggest that the Minister of Finance establishes an account in the name of ‘National Rescue Fund’ that can receive contributions large and small,” he wrote. “Please, fellow citizens, let’s do this as a sign of unity and togetherness.”

Dr Amoah appealed to well-to-do in society and philanthropic institutions, including the East Legon Executive Fitness Club, traditional authorities, churches, diaspora associations, and professional bodies such as the Ghana Bar Association, Ghana Medical Association, and the Association of Ghana Industries to contribute generously to the Fund.

He proposed that individuals and organisations could contribute between GH¢2.00 and GH¢1,000 to raise money for the Fund.

Dr Amoah called for unity among the citizens, saying “There comes a time when we heed a certain call, when we must come together as one. There are people dying Oh, and it’s time to lend a hand to life, the greatest gift of all.”

The Philanthropist’s advocacy for a NRF is deeply rooted in his long-standing belief in self-reliant African leadership; one that moves away from excessive dependence on external aid and focuses instead on mobilising local resources, skills, and patriotism for national development

Pampering corrupt suspects dignifies criminality

Mohammed Adams Sukparu is Member of Parliament for Sissala West Mohammed Adams Sukparu is Member of Parliament for Sissala West

The Member of Parliament for Sissala West, Mohammed Adams Sukparu, has urged the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) to adopt a more stringent approach in combating corruption.

He warned that the current practice of politely inviting suspects risks shielding and dignifying criminality.

Reacting to the recent arrest of former GIHOC Distilleries Managing Director, Maxwell Kofi Jumah, in an interview on Channel One TV’s “Breakfast Daily” on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, and monitored by GhanaWeb, Sukparu asserted that Ghana’s fight against corruption will remain ineffective if suspects are handled with “kid gloves” simply due to their political exposure or connections.

“If you sit and invite them to come at their own time, with their lawyers, it’s as if we’re trying to dignify corruption. Yet, the same system has no problem sentencing someone who stole GH¢500 or a goat to 10 years in prison,” Sukparu stated.

The lawmaker stressed that Ghana’s current justice system disproportionately punishes the poor for minor crimes, while the rich and powerful often evade true accountability.

He called for equal treatment under the law, arguing that public officials who embezzle state resources must be viewed as enemies of development.

“These are people who are supposed to manage public resources for our collective benefit. When they allegedly divert millions of cedis, they don’t just steal money—they steal roads, schools, and hospitals from the people,” he said.

The MP cited the deplorable condition of the Wa–Tumu road as a stark symbol of the cost of corruption. This vital route, connecting the Upper West and Upper East Regions, has remained in terrible disrepair for decades, making travel frustrating and dangerous.

“That road has never been fixed since I was born. It should take just one hour and 30 minutes to drive from Wa to Tumu, but now we spend nearly three hours—especially when it rains. Funds lost to corruption could have transformed that road and many others,” he lamented.

Sukparu maintained that the political affiliation of suspects should never interfere with investigations or prosecution.

“Even if it’s an NDC appointee, the same treatment should apply. This fight must be principled, not selective. Anyone who steals from the state is an enemy to our progress,” he remarked.

He urged the public to support anti-corruption efforts and called on institutions like EOCO to remain bold and independent in pursuing justice.

Fidelity Bank commits to 24-Hour Economy; Ghana-China business ties

0

Accra, July 1, GNA – Fidelity Bank Ghana has pledged to back the Government’s ambition to build a 24-hour economy, while it supports economic growth by promoting trade and investment between Ghana and China.

Mr John-Paul Taabavi, Director of the Public Sector Group at Fidelity Bank, stated this at the just ended summit, in Accra, to strengthen trade and business between Ghanaian and Chinese business and trade partners.

He said the Bank was providing real-time, practical solutions to support businesses and drive long-term growth.

“Trade relationships don’t run on goodwill alone,” Mr Taabavi said. “They need banking infrastructure that works across time zones, understands cultural nuances, and provides consistent, inclusive access to capital.”

The summit, held at the Labadi Beach Hotel, brought together government officials, business leaders and development partners from Ghana and China.

It was held under the theme: “Synergising Opportunities: Strengthening the Ghana-China Business Relationship and Fostering a 24-Hour Economy.”

Mr Taabavi spoke about Fidelity Bank’s record in financing major industrial and infrastructure projects.

“The 24-hour economy we envision is not just about staying open longer. It’s about building systems that work around the clock – systems that enable a Ghanaian SME to ship to Guangzhou at midnight, and a Chinese manufacturer to settle payments in real-time,” he said.

“Ghana is ready. Fidelity Bank is ready. And with our friends from China, the opportunities are endless,” he added.

He said Fidelity Bank was aligning its services with national priorities.

These include offering pre-approved credit lines to high-performing Ghanaian businesses and trade finance for companies that import solar products and telecom equipment.

Mr Taabavi noted that building a 24-hour economy would require more than just financing.

He called for strong systems  would make trade predictable, support cold-chain logistics, and reward sustainability with better access and pricing.

“We must build solid systems – ones that support cross-border trade predictability, prioritise cold-chain logistics, and reward sustainability not just in principle, but in pricing and access,” he said.

He added that Fidelity Bank would soon introduce new measures to support business.

These include deeper engagement with Chinese and Indian chambers of commerce and new green finance products for industrial clients.

The Bank also plans to use predictive analytics to support SMEs that lack traditional credit histories.

“Local banks matter,” he said. “Because we know the terrain, we know the players, and we are invested in the long-term success of Ghana.”

He described the Bank as a reliable partner that “supports businesses to operate efficiently at any time of day or night.”

Highlighting its commitment to the Chinese partnership, he mentioned the Bank’s role as a major syndicate partner in the Sentuo Oil Refinery project, which is now the largest privately-owned refinery in Ghana.

He also referred to the Bank’s support for the Triton OCH pulp-to-paper project and its long-term partnerships with the Sunda Group.

These projects, he said, showed Fidelity’s strong commitment to Ghana’s industrial development through international partnerships.

To serve its growing Asian business clients, Fidelity Bank has set up a Local Corporate and Asian Business Desk.

This desk is part of its Corporate and Institutional Banking Division. It is staffed with relationship managers who speak Mandarin and Hindi.

This helps the Bank engage clients in a more culturally intelligent and effective way.

Mr Taabavi said the Bank had also improved its corporate internet banking platform. The platform now offers multilingual features, which allow clients who speak Mandarin to use the system with ease.

“Finance is about trust and trust grows in understanding,” he said. “Whether you’re a Ghanaian SME exporting cocoa nibs or a Chinese EPC contractor building in Tema, you deserve a banking partner that speaks your language – literally and operationally.”

Kurt Okraku has overachieved as GFA president – Esme Mends claims

0

Esme Mends, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) Club Licensing Manager and former Hearts of Oak midfielder, has offered glowing praise for Ghana football’s progress under GFA President Kurt Okraku, giving his administration a strong 8 out of 10 rating.

Speaking in an interview with GhanaSportspage, Mends admitted that his perspective changed significantly after becoming actively involved in football administration.

“I didn’t really understand it from afar, but it’s different after getting involved,” he said.

Highlighting several of President Okraku’s key achievements, Mends pointed to the distribution of pickups to all Regional Football Associations (RFAs) and buses to Division One League clubs as evidence of tangible support and investment.

“He is delivering his promises and I think he is overachieving. He has done a lot of things he promised.”

Mends also noted that the competitive nature of the Ghana Premier League has improved under the current leadership, moving away from the traditional dominance of Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko.

“The league has been very competitive under his tenure. It is not the usual Hearts and Kotoko.”
Despite acknowledging that challenges still remain, Mends emphasized that steady progress is being made:

“So we keep improving despite all the challenges, so I’ll rate 8/10.”

His comments come at a time when the GFA face backlash over the just ended 2024/2025 Ghana Premier League which was eclipsed by several hooliganism incidents.

‘I won’t model for any Ghanaian brand if the money isn’t good’

Ghanaian international model Rodney Osei Ghanaian international model Rodney Osei

Ghanaian international model Rodney Osei has firmly established that he would not work with any Ghanaian brand if he is not paid well.

In an interview with GhanaWeb’s Joseph Henry Mensah on June 30, 2025, Rodney Osei who modelled in the just-ended 2025 Paris Fashion Week noted that most Ghanaian brands do not pay models what they deserve.

“To be honest if it comes to fashion in the Ghanaian brands, I do not really know much of them. But if they are ready to pay the rate I am going to do it because that is all matters. In Europe, we don’t do anything fully for the clout. I don’t do magazines because they don’t pay.

“But if it’s a friend’s brand I am not going to charge him. It all bores down to the relationship with the person… In Europe anytime they put a picture of you on a website they pay you… You’re an image and if you are a selling point of something you have to make money out of it,” he said.

Rodney Osei also pointed out that modelling isn’t as financially rewarding as people often assume.

“It can be really lucrative but the same time like a regular 9 to 5 job. With modelling you can make crazy money in a month and no money in three to four months. And you have to feed off what you have saved. But if you have a side job that is paying your bills then it is good,” he added.

‘Set the agenda to reset the economy and this nation’

Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams is the General Overseer of Action Chapel Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams is the General Overseer of Action Chapel

The Presiding Archbishop and General Overseer of Action Chapel International, Nicholas Duncan-Williams, has called on President John Dramani Mahama to make a profound and lasting impact during his current four-year tenure.

Leading a delegation of religious leaders at the maiden National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving at the State House Forecourt on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, Archbishop Duncan-Williams emphasised that the mandate given to the government serves as a bold reminder of its developmental promise, one intended to benefit all citizens and future generations.

“Mr President, your presidency this time around and this mandate is not for you nor us. It’s for our children’s children. It’s for generations yet unborn. So, Mr President, make a difference, set the agenda, reset the economy and this nation,” he declared.

The Archbishop urged President Mahama, under his “Resetting Ghana Agenda,” to implement policies that will develop the country in a way that creates a lasting legacy for future generations.

He further advocated for the establishment of a comprehensive national development agenda to drive Ghana’s long-term progress.

He posited that such a plan would help streamline the country’s resources and revenue toward a unified national goal.

Duncan-Williams lamented Ghana’s apparent lack of consistent progress, attributing it to the absence of a long-term national development plan.

He drew comparisons to developed nations like China and Dubai, noting their steady economic growth stems from deliberate efforts to implement long-term national plans with clear visions and goals.

“National development agenda and a national vision. China, Dubai, India all have hundred years vision. Ghana, our motherland where is our vision? Where is our agenda?” he questioned.

“Under the leadership of President John Dramani Mahama, a national agenda and a developed plan should be established that compels all stakeholders—irrespective of your tribe, religion, background, and political party—by constitution to follow that agenda, so that our money, cocoa, oil, and all the resources will be channeled towards one common goal: the development of Ghana,” he added.

The inaugural National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving was held under the theme “Reset, Reflect, and Renew for National Prosperity.”

Former Chelsea prodigy Charly Musonda retires from football at 28

0

Former Chelsea player, Charly Musonda Former Chelsea player, Charly Musonda

Former Chelsea and Belgium highly-rated prospect, Charly Musonda, has announced his retirement from football at just 28 years old.

Musonda joined Chelsea’s academy from Anderlecht in 2012, arriving with a lot of hype and quickly shining in the Blues’ trophy-laden youth teams.

However, his senior career at Stamford Bridge was hampered by injuries, limiting him to just seven first-team appearances.

During his time at Chelsea, he had loan spells at Real Betis, Celtic, and Vitesse.

Injuries severely impacted the Belgian’s trajectory, particularly a serious knee issue sustained during his loan at Vitesse, which led doctors to believe he might never play professionally again.

Despite defying those predictions and returning to play for Chelsea’s Under-23 team, he ultimately left the club in 2022 after his contract expired, a departure he claims greatly affected him.

After leaving Chelsea, Musonda joined Spanish side Levante, then moved to Cypriot club Anorthosis a year later, his final club, which he departed last year.

Musonda confirmed his decision to hang up his boots on Rising Ballers’ YouTube channel on June 30, 2025, during an interview, stating, “It took some time. I have been thinking about it for the last couple of years. Purely because of my own experiences and who I am as a person.”

“I want to be doing things with purpose. I want to inspire and motivate people. I want to create opportunities. I am starting something new that will hopefully help players,” he expressed his future aspirations, focusing on purpose and making a difference.

“Today, I have made a decision… I am going to retire from professional football,” he continued.

“It is not an easy decision, but I am building up towards the next stage now. I will still be involved in football, in roles to help players express themselves and giving them an opportunity to showcase how good they are… I want to help players who don’t have the chance to showcase their talent. I know how it feels and with football changing so much, many players never get the opportunity to show what they can do, I want to make a difference,” he added.

Transgender pipo for US military dey ‘in survival mode’ as ban on dia service start

0

Afta 17 years for di US Army, Maj Kara Corcoran, 39, bin dey prepare to graduate from one ogbonge military leadership programme.

But some complication dey.

Two days bifor di ceremony, dem tell Kara say she gatz conform to male regulations, wey mean say she go wear man uniform and cut her long blonde hairwey she don dey grown since 2018 wen she tell di Army say she don dey identify as a woman.

Di directive bin come from di Pentagon, and flow down through her chain of command for Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.

“Nothing about me be man, but dem go force me to wear male uniform just so I go fit waka across di stage wit my mates,” she tok, hours bifor di ceremony. “E no be my choice to cut my hair. I dey do am bicos I gatz do am.”

Kara na one of di several thousand transgender pipo wey dey affected by a ban, wey President Trump bin announce for January. Di ban prevent trans pipo from serving for any job for di US military.

Di ban bifor Trump first term bin focus on new recruits and allow some exceptions, especially for di ones wey don already dey serve. But di 2025 policy remove almost all di exceptions.

Official figures show say transgender pipo for di US armed forces dey, but oda estimates dey much higher, at about 10,000.

Di new policy tok say pesin wey get history or diagnosis of gender dysphoria no dey compatible wit di high mental and physical standards necessary for military service.

Gender dysphoria na wia pesin dey feel say dia gender dey different from di sex of dia birth.

For im executive order, President Trump say “di Armed Forces don dey afflicted wit radical gender ideology” and say di policy go make sure say staff dey “free of medical conditions or physical defects wey fit require too much time lost from duty for necessary treatment or hospitalization”.

Di order also tok say “for man to say im be woman, and for im to need make odas honor dis falsehood, no dey consistent wit di humility and selflessness wey dey required from a service member”.

One poll for February dis year suggest say 58% of Americans “dey in favor of allowing openly transgender men and women to serve for di US military, but dis support don drop from 71% in 2019 and 66% in 2021”.

Critics don call di ban discriminatory and legal challenges don dey filed from serving transgender officers and human rights groups.

Since February, di BBC don dey follow di lives of Maj Kara Corcoran and anoda officer for di Navy, Lt Rae Timberlake, as dem dey try manage di uncertainty of dia military careers.

Dem share wetin dem think and feel in dia personal capacity, no be as tok-tok pipo for di US military or dia oda colleagues.

A career in kwesion

Kara don spend most of her adult life for di US Army. Her combat deployments include time for Afghanistan wia she bin serve as platoon leader and company commander, wen she bin dey live as man, bifor she transition.

Since den, she say she don legally changed her name and gender and she dey use female pronouns.

Transgender pipo bin dey disqualified from all jobs for di military until 2016, but over di past decade, as goments dey change, US policy dey also change.

.2016: Obama comot di ban on trans pipo wey dey serve, and allow dem to access funds through di military for gender-related treatment

.2017: Trump announce ban on trans pipo wey dey serve, sake of medical costs and potential disruptions

.2021: Biden sign order to restore di right of trans pipo to serve

.2025: Trump announce a new ban and tell military bases to initiate separation proceedings against personnel wey get gender dysphoria

“For a long time, I keep silent,” Kara tok. Wen she join di army in 2008, women bin no dey allowed for combat positions.

Kara bin marry a woman and dem born children, although dia relationship later break down as she dey grapple wit her identity.

Las las, she come out as a transgender woman for 2018 and start her hormonal and surgical transition. She say she bin get di support of her commanding officers, wey bin still dey work wit di previous set of guidelines, despite Trump’s 2017 ban. She tell di BBC say di transition improve her ability to serve.

“E don make me to dey more focused, more resilient,” she tok. “Pipo get dis common misconception say transitioning na liability. For me, na di opposite.”

Now, as Trump latest policy come into effect, dem don tell Kara say if she no leave voluntarily, dem fit force her out of di service against her will through one process wey dem dey call involuntary separation.

Involuntary separation na wen pesin dey discharged and dem no choose to comot by dia own freewill. E fit affect any service member, no be just pipo for combat roles.

On top losing dia jobs, pipo fit also lose benefits like pensions, healthcare and disability provisions.

Di Department of Defense say pesin wey comot involuntarily fit get only half of wetin dem for get if dem bin comot voluntarily – di difference fit be tens of thousands of dollars.

Despite dis, Maj Kara Corcoran says she no wan walk away.

“I no go separate voluntarily,” she tok. “I go go thru di involuntary separation and wetin e look like and how horrific dem wan make am for me and oda service members.”

‘Di single dumbest phrase for military history’

Odas like former US Navy Seal, Carl Higbie, dey support Trump ban. Carl now dey host one TV show for di conservative network Newsmax.

E believe say transgender pipo no dey fit for service for di US military, as e tok say gender dysphoria fit require ongoing medical care and accommodations wey fit affect deployability.

“You no fit dey take Ritalin [medicine wey dem dey use to treat ADHD] or some kind prescription medicine dem, and still be eligible service member for combat. Why you go dey on hormone therapy, wey we know say e dey get emotional effects sometimes?” e ask.

Wen we ask am weda e think say biological women wey dey on hormonal medicines, like some treatment for menopause, dey fit to serve for di armed forces, e say: “I think say e get certain times wia we suppose dey more concern about killing bad guys dan making sure say we get gender quotas for a combat operation.”

Di ban on transgender service members na part of a broader shift for US military policy – Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, wey Trump bin appoint and who also be former army officer, don move to cancel diversity, equity, and inclusion programmes.

“I think di single dumbest phrase for military history na ‘our diversity is our strength’,” Hegseth tok for one event for di Pentagon in February.

And in April, e post on X say e don “proudly end” di Women, Peace and Security programme, wey be initiative to invite more women and girls to be part of conflict resolution. E call am a distraction from di ogbonge task of “war-fighting”.

A family wey go soon change

Many bin don see dis policy shift coming. For di early hours of 6 November, wen Donald Trump secure im victory for di 2024 US presidential election, Lt Rae Timberlake make a decision.

A non-binary navy officer, Rae join di Navy at di age of 17 and serve on top di nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Nimitz and also for di Middle East.

Rae fall unda di trans umbrella bicos even though dem register dem as female for dia birth, dem no dey identify as either male or female, and dia pronouns na dem.

Rae say coming out as non-binary in 2020 and transitioning, bin bring clarity to their identity. “Di moment I hear di word ‘non-binary’, I know say e fit me,” dem tell di BBC.

But wit di 2024 Trump victory, Rae feel say di clock don dey tick for dia career. Dem request to transfer from dia West Coast base, to a base closer to family for di east, wey go dey give dem support.

Rae, dia wife and daughter move for di middle of school term, as dem hope say dia possible separation from di Navy don dey near.

“E bin feel like di safest move for us, in case dem force me to leave di service,” Rae tok.

Dem add say dem no dey surprise by President Donald Trump executive order in January, or a memorandum from di Department of Defense di following month.

Di memo tok say military bases must identify service members wey get or wey dey exhibit symptoms of gender dysphoria. Di final deadlines for pipo to come forward voluntarily na 6 June for active-duty personnel and 7 July for reserve and National Guard members.

In May, di Department of Defense say 1,000 service personnel don identify diasef as trans, but dem neva update dat number since den.

Di military get 30 days from di deadline to start involuntary separation proceedings.

Di memo include a provision for pipo to be considered for a waiver on a case-by-case basis. One of di conditions include say di staff go be pesin wey “neva attempt to transition to any sex oda dan dia sex”.

By di time dem publish di memorandum, Rae don already take a new post for Maryland, and di family don dey adjust to dia new home.

“Watching Rae lose dia career, e dey painful,” dia wife, Lindsay, tok. “We dey in survival mode. We neva get time to connect as family. We just dey make hard choices.”

For Rae, di emotional cost dey high. Dem don decide say dem want more control ova di future, so dem don request to retire from di Navy, and by doing so dem don identify diasef for voluntary separation. Di application neva dey accepted yet, but Rae believe say e go dey accepted.

Dem expect di financial implications to be substantial. As dem neva complete 20 years of service, Rae says dem fit forfeit eligibility for a military pension. Dem estimate say pension payments fit add up to about $2.5m ova di course of dia retirement.

A legal and political battle

Even though di Department of Defense say di ban go maintain consistent medical and readiness standards across di forces, opponents, argue say di policy dey target a vulnerable group unfairly.

Three lawsuits don dey filed for court to challeng di legality.

For one high-profile ruling, one federal judge bin block di ban temporarily, sake of concerns of weda e dey constitutional and suggest say e dey discriminate based on gender identity.

However, for April, di Supreme Court lift di injunction, allowing di policy to move forward as litigation continues.

Di legal back-and-forth don leave transgender service members for limbo.

Job hunting for di civilian sector don dey tough for Rae. “I bin apply for one position wey get ova 800 applicants for one day,” they tok, adding say civilian life go offer less security dan di Navy. “E dey competitive and daunting out dia.”

But dem say di next chapter na about not feeling “unda threat for who I be”.

Looking ahead

Kara no self-identify by di 6 June deadline, so she dey wait now to see if di military go flag her for separation – di 30-day window mean say dat one suppose happen by 6 July. She go see wetin unfold from dia.

Di US Department of Defense no gree give statement to di BBC but dem point to previous statements wey say dem dey committed to treating all service members wey di policy impact wit dignity and respect.

One US defence official say di “characterization of service go dey honorable except wia di record of di service member otherwise warrant a lower characterization”.

For now Kara remain for her base for Fort Leavenworth but she dey prepared to leave wit little notice if she gatz to. She don turn her car into a mobile home wit one big power bank, cooking equipment, and a fold-out mattress.

“On top I also get eight-gallon water tank. I fill am up, pump am wit air compressor, and I fit take shower out in di wild. At least I get somewia to live.”

Wen she graduate from di leadership programme wit distinction, after complying wit di male uniform and grooming standards, she say e bin “mean a lot, but how I take do am bin feel like say I dey erase my identity”.

“Dis na about pipo who don dedicate dia lives to service, now dem dey tell dem say dem no longer dey fit, not bicos of performance, but bicos of who dem be.”

Kara bin join di Army in 2008 and transition 10 years later

Former US Navy Seal, Carl Higbie, believe say trans pipo no dey fit to serve for di armed services

Local languages to be introduced in Parliamentary debates soon

0

Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has announced that local languages will soon be introduced during parliamentary deliberations.

Speaking at the launch of the Open Parliament Action Plan, Alban Bagbin emphasised the need to preserve Ghana’s cultural identity in national discourse.

He noted that allowing MPs to speak local languages on the floor of Parliament is a step toward inclusivity and deeper citizen engagement in democratic governance.

“No society develops with the language of another society. So, we have to get that terminology we are talking about in place. We want our language to be heard on the floor. So, we are going to start very soon.

“It is captured in our standing orders for all MPs to use their mother tongue, so long as they can symphoniously translate into the official language of English,” he said.

He added: “Very soon, we will employ experts in these languages to come and support us as translators.”

This is not the first time the Speaker has made such a proposal. On February 16, 2024, he first announced the intention to allow local language use in Parliament, citing Standing Order 63, which states: “Members of Parliament will be free to use any local language, as long as it is interpreted and translated for the benefit of all.”

Crop Top and Skirt Duo Makes an Unstoppable Comeback in 2025

0

The classic combo of crop top and skirt is rewriting the rules of modern fashion—again. Once a go-to summer outfit, this stylish duo has evolved into a year-round fashion favorite, and it’s not hard to see why. With its blend of comfort, versatility, and expressive flair, the crop top and skirt trend is redefining what it means to dress with confidence.

At the heart of this trend lies the crop top—a midriff-baring piece that comes in endless variations, from minimalist cuts to statement prints. When paired with a skirt—be it mini, midi, or maxi—the results are fashion-forward and attention-grabbing.

A crop top with a high-waisted maxi skirt creates a flowy, elegant look ideal for beach days, festivals, or relaxed outings. On the flip side, teaming it with a fitted mini skirt adds an edge, making it a favorite for night outs and streetwear-inspired aesthetics. Meanwhile, midi skirts strike a perfect balance for brunches, date nights, or even casual office days with the right layering.

What keeps this style relevant is its seasonal adaptability. Summer collections embrace breathable fabrics and floral prints, while cooler months invite layered interpretations with denim jackets, oversized blazers, or cozy knit cardigans.

Celebrities, fashion influencers, and top designers are continuously reinventing this duo with co-ord sets, asymmetrical cuts, bold colors, and textured fabrics. Whether you’re pairing yours with sneakers for a daytime stroll or stilettos for an evening glam, the crop top and skirt ensemble allows room for personal expression like no other.

In 2025, this look is more than a trend—it’s a movement. A celebration of femininity, body confidence, and timeless appeal, proving that fashion is not just what you wear—it’s how you wear it.

King Paluta Lashes Out At Guest During London Performance

0

King Paluta

Musician King Paluta allegedly verbally attacked a female guest during his performance at an All White Boat Party in London.

The incident, which has since gone viral on social media, occurred while the Aseda hitmaker performed to music lovers at the ceremony.

In a video circulating online, King Paluta paused mid-performance to confront a woman in the audience who appeared unimpressed with his set.

According to eyewitnesses, the guest visibly expressed her disinterest and even signalled for the rapper to leave the stage — a gesture that seemed to ignite King Paluta’s anger.

“I am here because of my fans,” he shouted during the outburst. “She can’t stand there and give me that facial reaction. If you don’t give a f** about me, I don’t give a f** about you either. Your ugly wig,” he added, visibly upset.

Though some attendees tried to calm him down, King Paluta continued venting, saying he needed to “free his mind” before resuming the performance. He later performed his song ‘For the Popping’, with many fans at the front still dancing and enjoying the music.

The incident has sparked mixed reactions online. While some fans defended the artist’s right to respond to perceived disrespect, others criticised his choice of words and called for greater composure during performances.

‘Oppressive’ NDC Leading Calculated CJ, EC Heads Removal – Ahiagbah

0

Richard Ahiagbah

The Director of Communications for the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has accused the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) of orchestrating a calculated political agenda to remove the heads of constitutional bodies – the Chief Justice (CJ), the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC) and her deputies.

According to him, the NDC’s true intent is to remove Justice Gertrude Torkornoo as Chief Justice, which then opens the door for them to remove Jean Mensa as the EC Chair and her two deputies – Dr. Eric Bossman Asare (Corporate Services) and Samuel Tettey (Operations).

His comment followed suggestions by the National Chairman of the NDC, Johnson Asiedu Nketia that the entire leadership of the EC must be removed, claiming they are “not fit for purpose.”

“There has to be a change… The three top leadership must all go. They have managed the commission so badly… Resetting the EC means bringing it back to an institution that is fit for purpose. The way it is existing now, it is not fit for purpose,” he said on Joy News on June 25, 2025.

Reacting to the comments on Channel One’s Big Issue on Saturday, Mr. Ahiagbah said it solidifies the NDC’s broader agenda of undermining the independence of state institutions ahead of the 2028 elections.

He also indicated that it has become clear the Chief Justice would be removed from office, although the three petitions calling for her removal are light in weight and inconsequential.

“I am not surprised, these things will materialise. The first stop is the Chief Justice; she is a goner. The commentary of the NDC is clear and explicit that the Chief Justice is going to go, even though the evidence is light and inconsequential. And immediately she is gone, they will go back to remove the EC Chairpersons. It is cast in stone,” he noted.

Oppressive Regime

Mr. Ahiagbah also accused the NDC of trying to remove the Chief Justice in an unprecedented and dangerous manner, indicating that the current NDC government will go down as the most judicially oppressive regime if it succeeds in removing the CJ in this manner.

“This Chief Justice matter—the NDC will go down in history as the most judicially oppressive regime, one that took our judiciary over, subjugated it, if they conclude this process and therefore appoint a CJ to replace Madam Gertrude Torkornoo.

Mr. Ahiagbah added that “It is unheard of that a President would go as far as they are seeking to go in the absence of very compelling, clear-cut evidence of misconduct, or incapacity to perform or execute the task of the office of the CJ.”

There are currently three petition calling for the removal of Justice Torkornoo as the Chief Justice.

Petitions

Three petitions which were filed some time in February 2025, have led to President John Mahama suspending the Chief Justice after the finding of a prima facie case against her by the Council of State.

President Mahama on April 22, 2025, suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo following the setting up of a five-member committee to probe the three petitions calling for her removal from office.

The suspension followed the finding of prima facie by the Council of State following the forwarding of the three petitions by the President.

The committee is chaired by Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang, a Justice of the Supreme Court and also includes Justice Samuel Kwame Adibu-Asiedu, a Justice of the Supreme Court, Daniel Yaw Domelevo, Major Flora Bazaanura Dalugo and Prof. James Sefah Dzisah.

The Supreme Court has so far dismissed three separate applications calling for the revocation of the suspension and an order nullifying the steps taken by the President in respect of the petitions, as well as the setting up of a five-member committee to probe the petitions.

The National Lottery Authority (NLA) has responded to the call by the Vota Regional Coordinating Council to support victims of tidal waves by presenting a cheque of GHS 100,000 to the Council.

The Director-General, Mr. Mohammed Abdul-Salam, presented the cheque to the Volta Regional Minister, Hon. James Gunu, who was accompanied by the Municipal Chief Executive of Ketu South Municipal Assembly, Mr. Nicholas Kwabla Worclachie, along with some assembly members.

Mr. Abdul-Salam emphasized the NLA’s swift response to the disaster, stating that the organization, through its Good Causes Foundation, acted promptly to help alleviate the plight of the victims.

“We have seen the devastation the tidal waves have caused in these communities, and that is why when the Volta Regional Coordinating Council, through the Regional Minister, appealed to the NLA for support, we prioritized it.  We believe our contribution will provide immediate relief to these displaced families and support them in this time of need”.

The Municipal Chief Executive of the Ketu South Municipal Assembly, Mr. Nicholas Kwabla Worclachie, expressed profound gratitude to the NLA for the kind gesture, which will undoubtedly make a substantial impact on the lives of the affected people.

According to the Volta Regional Minister, Hon. James Gunu, the NLA is the first institution to respond to their call for help among many. He thanked Mr. Abdul-Salam and management for the support.

He further explained that the victims of the tidal waves have had their economic livelihoods cut off and are living in tents; thus, the funds will be used to provide much-needed shelter, food, and clothing to the displaced victims of Agavedzi, Asalakope, and Amunitsi, addressing their immediate needs.

The NLA Good Causes Foundation is the Authority’s charity arm, spearheading its corporate social responsibility. The Foundation operates on four pillars: Health, Education, Youth and Sports Development, and Arts and Culture. It is hinged on Section 2(3) of the National Lotto Act, which mandates the NLA to conduct, as part of the operation of National Lotto, a lottery to provide care and protection for the physically or mentally afflicted, the needy, the aged, orphans, and destitute children.

Ghana deports convicted Nigerian for smuggling fake currency worth over $100,000

A 55-year-old Nigerian man convicted of smuggling large sums of fake CFA Francs currency, amounting to over $100,000, into Ghana, will be deported to Nigeria.

The convict, Aremu Timothy Adegboyega, was convicted by an Accra Circuit Court.

Adegboyega, who was initially on trial after pleading not guilty, changed his plea to guilty midway through the court proceedings.

He was charged with two counts of possessing forged notes contrary to Section 18(2) of the Currency Act, 1964 (Act 242) and one count of illegal entry into Ghana.

The court fined him the equivalent of GH¢3,000 or two years in prison with hard labour. He was also fined the equivalent of GH¢1,440, a two-year prison term.

Adegboyega was arrested on January 17, 2023, by Customs officers stationed at the Aflao border.

He was a pillion passenger on a motorcycle and carrying a backpack; he drew the suspicion of the officers, who searched his belongings.

The search uncovered bundles of currency suspected to be counterfeit: CFA Francs totalling CFA 80,653,000 and Naira totalling ₦101,500.

Further investigations revealed that the accused had smuggled the forged currency into Ghana from Togo.

During interrogation, he confessed in a caution statement that he knew the notes were forged.

He claimed he had received the counterfeit currency from an individual named Alhaji Saibu in Nigeria, acting on instructions from one Alhaji Dials, allegedly a mafia figure based in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.

The case was handed over to the Ghana Police Service on January 20, 2023, for further investigation, which is reportedly ongoing.

Authorities say the conviction sends a clear message to anyone attempting to undermine Ghana’s financial and border security systems.

Let the Cedi flourish under your leadership — Duncan-Williams to Mahama

Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams, Founder and General Overseer of Action Chapel International, has called on President John Dramani Mahama to lead a bold transformation agenda that will strengthen the economy and unite the nation under a clear, long-term development vision.

Speaking during the National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving held on Tuesday, July 1, at the State House in Accra, the revered clergyman urged President Mahama to use his second chance at leadership to make a lasting impact.

“Mr President, within three years, make a difference. Impact this world and change the narrative of Ghana. Let the Cedi thrive under your leadership. Let the Cedi flourish under your leadership and let things get better and better under your leadership like never before,” he declared, drawing strong applause from the congregation.

Archbishop Duncan-Williams also stressed the need for a values-based national identity anchored in patriotism and faith.

“We need to develop a strong love for God. Also, love the country and the love for Ghana,” he said, warning against political divisions that weaken national progress.

He called for the immediate development of a comprehensive national agenda, similar to long-term development plans in countries like China, India, and Dubai, which, according to him, have 100-year national visions that transcend political cycles.

“Ghana, our motherland, is where our vision and agenda are. Under the leadership of President John Dramani Mahama, a national agenda will be established to compel all stakeholders to follow that agenda,” he added.

The National Day of Prayer brought together political leaders, clergy, and civil society groups to intercede for peace, unity, and direction for the nation under the theme of thanksgiving and hope.

Koku Anyidoho, a former Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has criticized president John Dramani Mahama over the appointment and role of Felix Kwakye Ofosu, who serves as Minister of State in charge of Government Communications.

According to Anyidoho, it is improper for one person to serve as the spokesperson for both the presidency and the entire government.

He argued that the individual who speaks for the president should not necessarily speak for the government as a whole.

Speaking in an interview on Sompa TV on June 26, 2025, Anyidoho stated that, historically, only President Mahama adopted such a structure.

“Why should we have a system where one person speaks for both the government and the president? President Mahama introduced this system in 2013 during his tenure,” he said.

“Apart from President Mahama, where in Ghana’s political history has it been established that one person serves as the spokesperson for both the presidency and the entire government?”

Ghanaian media personality Deloris Frimpong Manso, popularly known as Delay, has opened up on a difficult experience she faced early in her journalism career.

Speaking at the AYA Women’s Summit on June 30, 2025, Delay who said she began her media journey at just 17 years old, recounted how Fred Nuamah once sacked her from Adom FM.

According to Delay, she hosted her show during the midnight hours, working from 12 a.m. to 4 a.m., but was not officially recognised as a staff member, something that eventually led to her dismissal.

“I first came to radio when I was 17. I worked with Live FM… I worked with Adom FM for a year. On Adom, I used to come on air at 12 midnight and close at 4 AM. I never got paid because I wasn’t considered a worker until one Mr. Fredrick Nuamah sacked me that my service wasn’t needed there,” she said.

Delay went on to describe how the abrupt dismissal negatively affected her and caused her to take a break from the media.

“The radio dream was cut short for a while until I came back on the radio in 2005 when Top Radio relaunched their station… I stayed there for 2 years, and Oman FM came for me. I worked there for nine years.

“There was a guy, Rex Annang who introduced me to television. Years before I had gone for an audition at TV3 that was how I was with Rex who was one of the guys who did the audition,” he added.

She also narrated how she transitioned into television, giving out credit to a key personality who helped guide her into that path.

‘No group can conduct anti-galamsey raids without approval’ – Lands Ministry cautions

0

Lands ministry has launched a secretariat that will now supervise anti-galamsey raids Lands ministry has launched a secretariat that will now supervise anti-galamsey raids

The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources has withdrawn the authority of independent groups or individuals to conduct operations at illegal mining sites.

This move is part of a renewed effort to combat illegal mining activities through a centralised, intelligence-led approach.

The ministry, in a statement signed by its Director of Communications and issued on June 30, 2025, Ama Mawusi Mawuenyefia, announced the establishment of the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS).

This secretariat is now the sole central authority mandated to initiate, coordinate, and supervise all anti-illegal mining operations across the country.

“The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources wishes to formally announce that, in line with the government’s commitment to addressing the menace of illegal mining, an effective and robust intelligence-led secretariat has been officially launched to operate as the central authority for initiating, coordinating, and supervising all anti-illegal mining operations across the country,” the statement read.

NAIMOS is a collaborative effort involving stakeholders from the Ministry of Defence, Ministry of the Interior, the National Security Council, and the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources.

Its objective is to create a well-coordinated framework to effectively crack down on illegal mining and its associated environmental harms.

The ministry explicitly cautioned individuals and groups against undertaking independent anti-illegal mining initiatives without prior approval and clearance from NAIMOS.

“In view of this integrated intelligence initiative, the ministry wishes to emphatically state that no person, individual, or organised group is allowed to embark on any anti-illegal mining operation without consulting the duly established Secretariat, which has been formally tasked for that purpose,” the statement emphasised.

“For the avoidance of doubt, all anti-galamsey operations, swoops, and raids conducted without the express approval and authorisation of the Secretariat are strongly discouraged, and we urge all concerned Ghanaians to take note of this arrangement and comply accordingly,” it added.

‘It was a disaster’ – Frank Adu Jnr slams Akufo-Addo, Ofori-Atta over economic management

Former CEO of CalBank, Frank Adu Jnr, has criticized the economic leadership of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and his Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, describing their tenure as “disastrous.”

Speaking in an interview on JoyNews on Monday, June 30, 2025, the respected banker did not mince words when asked to evaluate Ofori-Atta’s legacy, summing it up in one phrase: “Disaster! Disastrous.”

Adu attributed the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) defeat in the 2024 general elections to the widespread public dissatisfaction caused by the government’s economic policies over the last eight years.

“Look, if it wasn’t disastrous between him and the president, the people of Ghana wouldn’t have voted the way they voted in 2024. It’s not me saying it; the verdict is captured in the results of the elections,” he asserted.

“You do not run the economy where almost everybody is suffering and expect that the people will not object. And that’s what the voters of this country did last year.”

His comments come as debate intensifies over the Akufo-Addo administration’s economic legacy, particularly in light of rising national debt, inflation, and declining living standards during its final years in office.

Frank Adu also revealed a personal connection with the former finance minister, noting that the two shared a close bond dating back decades.

“We are kind of family. On my first trip to the US, I stayed with Ken. We slept in the same bed. So that’s the relationship,” he disclosed.

“I remember when he was appointed. I sent him a message, congratulating him and urging him to do the best he could for this country, and leave a legacy, and that’s what we all expected. We were all very hopeful, but subsequent events have betrayed that hope.”

South Africa seeks extension of Trump tariff deadline to pursue trade deal

0

U.S. President Donald Trump meets South African President Cyril Ramaphosa U.S. President Donald Trump meets South African President Cyril Ramaphosa

South Africa has asked for more time to negotiate a trade deal with U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration before his higher tariff regime goes into effect on July 9, Pretoria’s trade ministry said on Tuesday.

Trump imposed a 31 percent tax on U.S. imports from South Africa in April as part of his global “reciprocal” tariffs, before pausing their application for 90 days to allow for negotiations.

South Africa aims to secure a trade deal that would exempt some of its key exports from the tariffs, including autos, auto parts, steel, and aluminium. It has offered to buy liquefied natural gas from the United States in exchange.

It is also seeking a maximum tariff application of 10% as a worst-case scenario, the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition said in a statement.

South African officials met with Assistant U.S. Trade Representative for Africa Connie Hamilton in Luanda last week, and learned that the U.S. was developing a template to use for its engagements with African countries, the statement said.

“In view of this development…, African countries, including South Africa, have advocated for the extension of the 90-day deadline to enable countries to prepare their proposed deals in accordance with the new template,” it said.

The U.S. Trade Representative’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The U.S. is South Africa’s second-largest bilateral trading partner after China. In addition to car parts and other manufactured goods, South Africa exports agricultural products to the U.S. and stands to lose about 35,000 jobs in the citrus industry if the tariffs take effect.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa first presented the proposed trade deal during his visit to the White House in May, when Trump confronted him with false claims of a “genocide” against whites in South Africa. Ramaphosa later said constructive discussions had followed.

Several people were killed during anti-government demonstrations in Togo last week, said a human rights activist, who also accused security forces of using “shocking violence” against protesters.

“We urge South African industry to exercise strategic patience and not take decisions in haste, and that the government will continue to use every avenue to engage the U.S. government to find amicable solutions,” said Trade Minister Parks Tau.

In the end, the most beautiful outfits are those that make a woman feel confident and radiant. Fashion is personal, and the right outfit can be a powerful expression of individuality and beauty.

Court Grants Kofi Boat 10 Days To Prepare For Extradition

0

Kofi Boateng

The Accra Magistrate Court has granted Ghanaian businessman, Kofi Boateng, popularly known as Kofi Boat, 10 days to gather documents in preparation for his extradition to the United States.

Kofi Boat was arrested on June 13, 2025, alongside two others — a man identified only as “Agony” and a third unnamed accomplice — in a joint operation by Interpol and the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). The trio is accused of being part of a $100 million fraud scheme involving Business Email Compromise (BEC) and romance scams.

At a court appearance on June 26, Kofi’s legal team requested a 14-day grace period to collect business records they claim are vital to his defence. They argued that he runs a frozen foods company with over 13 branches across Ghana, and the documents would demonstrate the legitimacy of his financial transactions.

However, Deputy Attorney General, Justice Srem-Sai, urged the court to limit the extension, and the judge granted only 10 days.

Kofi Boat has denied all allegations, stating that the widely reported $100 million figure is false. His lawyers contend the actual amount in question is approximately $300,000, which they insist stemmed from legitimate business dealings.

Kofi remains in custody with the National Investigations Bureau (NIB), while his wife is reportedly helping compile the necessary documents. The extradition proceedings follow a May 2023 indictment by the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, which charged the suspects with conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering.

Aquamet Technologies Drives Sustainable Aquaculture

0

Aquament beneficiaries displaying their catch

In Ghana, where fish is a staple in nearly every household, the aquaculture sector plays a critical role in national food security.

Despite producing over 89,000 metric tonnes of fish in 2023, mostly tilapia and catfish, Ghana still imports more than 60% of the fish consumed locally.

Aquamet Technologies, a Ghanaian aquatech startup supported by Kosmos Innovation Center (KIC) is playing a critical role in national food security by supporting smallholder fish farmers grappling with challenges like poor water quality, disease outbreaks, and high feed costs.

On a mission to meet supply chain gaps with cutting-edge but affordable technology designed specifically for the realities of local fish farmers, Aquamet uses a smart water quality probe that monitors essential parameters such as temperature, dissolved oxygen, and pH levels.

Unlike traditional solutions, the device provides real-time alerts via SMS and a mobile app, ensuring farmers, even in remote areas, can respond swiftly to changing water conditions and prevent fish loss.

Since launching, Aquamet has positively impacted over 145 farmers across the Volta, Eastern, Ashanti, and Greater Accra regions. As the country works towards its national goal of producing 200,000 metric tonnes of farmed fish by 2030, Aquamet is emerging as a key player in accelerating this vision and advancing the country’s blue economy.

In addition to the hardware innovations, Aquamet offers a comprehensive farm management app featuring a feeding estimator, robust inventory tools, digital record keeping, and on-demand expert support. These tools enable farmers to reduce feed waste and fish mortality by up to 25%, while increasing productivity and efficiency across their operations.

“With Aquamet, solutions are locally built, farmer-tested, and focused on empowering the next generation of aquaculture entrepreneurs across Africa,” Frank Owusu, co-founder of Aquamet Technologies highlights.

Looking ahead, Aquamet Technologies plans to reach over 100,000 fish farmers across the continent within the next decade, contributing significantly to sustainable food systems and rural livelihoods.

Gyampo denies recruitment and travel allegations, vows legal action

0

Professor Ransford Gyampo, Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Shippers’ Authority, has dismissed as false and politically motivated, recent social media allegations accusing him of unauthorised recruitment and extravagant travel expenses.

In a statement titled “Responding to Baseless Allegations Against Me,” Prof. Gyampo said he felt compelled to address what he described as a smear campaign aimed at silencing him due to his outspoken views on national governance.

“Lies become truth in the psyche of many people in Ghana when they aren’t corrected,” he stated, adding that his response was intended “to set the records straight,” not to validate what he believes is a calculated attempt to discredit him.

Prof. Gyampo categorically denied reports that he had recruited 28 women and two men at the Authority. “I am not in charge of recruitment at my workplace,” he clarified, explaining that all staff hiring is handled by an independent private agency through a “rigorous and professional process.”

On allegations of excessive international travel, Prof. Gyampo noted that while his position occasionally demands foreign engagements, he had only participated in four trips out of 38 official opportunities—and each of them received clearance from the Chief of Staff.

“I have never travelled in First Class or Business Class. I remain the only CEO in Ghana who travels on an economy ticket,” he emphasised.

He also disclosed that legal action is being initiated against those behind the accusations. “My lawyers—and even other lawyers I don’t know—have taken over the matter and will deal with the individuals behind the baseless allegations this week,” he said.

Concluding his statement, Prof. Gyampo reaffirmed his dedication to national service and his determination to speak truth to power.

“Baseless allegations have never been enough to silence me. I will always speak my mind on every national issue while focusing on my core job of championing the interests of shippers forcefully and proactively.”

Below is the full statement

RESPONDING TO BASELESS ALLEGATIONS AGAINST ME

1. My attention has been drawn to some allegations made against me on some radio stations and on social media. I wish to thank all my admirers, well wishers, and teaming supporters all over the world on social media, for calling on me to ignore and not to respond. But unfortunately, lies become truth in the psyche of many people when they aren’t corrected. So, I plead that I am allowed to respond, not to the already known grand scheme against me because of my vociferousness against bad governance in the previous regime, but merely as a way to set the records straight.

2. I have not recruited 28 women and two men as being alleged. I am not in charge of recruitment at my work place. Recruitment over the years, I am told, has been done professionally by a private outsourced agency that follows a rigorous selection process.

3. Part of my work require that I travel and out of the over 38 opportunities, I have only honored 4 and these were with the expressed approval and permission from the Chief of Staff. Anyone can check for the evidence.

4. I have never travelled on First Class or Business class. I remain the only CEO in Ghana who travels on ECONOMY TICKET. Again the evidence of my boarding passes for all the four trips are there

5. My Lawyers and other lawyers I don’t even know, have taken over the matter and would deal with the individuals behind the baseless allegations, this week.

6. I assure all that I know the public confidence in me and I won’t do anything to betray the trust reposed in me. All must also be assured that baseless allegations have never been enough to silent me. I would remain myself and would always speak my mind on every national issues while focusing on my core job of championing the interest of shippers forcefully and proactively.
