Kasoa NDC executives criticise MP over alleged disregard of constituency executives

0

There is growing tension in the Awutu Senya East Constituency among members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) over appointment allocations.

Amid the tension, party members had warned that the NDC risks the parliamentary seat for only one term if matters were not addressed.

Member of Parliament (MP) for the Constituency, Mrs. Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor, has been accused of sidelining constituency executives in decision-making, employing divide-and-rule tactics, disregarding party structures, and misallocating appointment slots.

Black Satellites’ U-20 World Cup Hopes End In Penalty Shootout Loss To Egypt

0

Ghana’s Black Satellites were eliminated from the TotalEnergies U-20 Africa Cup of Nations after a heartbreaking penalty shootout defeat to host nation Egypt on Monday, at the New Suez Stadium, ending their bid to return to the FIFA U-20 World Cup.

The Satellites entered the quarterfinal unbeaten, having topped Group C with seven points. Forward Jerry Afriyie returned to the starting lineup to bolster the attack, but Ghana struggled to convert early dominance into goals.

Egypt took the lead in the 19th minute after a defensive mix-up between Dacosta Antwi and goalkeeper Gidios Aseako allowed Momen Sherif to score. Sherif added a second nine minutes later with a brilliant solo run

Ghana responded just before halftime, as Abdul Aziz Issah fired home a spectacular long-range strike to reduce the deficit. The Black Satellites equalised in the second half and pushed for a winner, but the match went into extra time.

A turning point came in the second period of extra time when Aaron Essel was sent off for a late challenge. Despite being down to 10 men, Ghana held on to force penalties.

In the shootout, Egypt converted all five spot-kicks. Ghana’s only miss came from Antwi, handing the hosts a 5-4 win.

The result ends Ghana’s quest for a first U-20 World Cup appearance since 2015.

Lecturer blasts politicians for hypocrisy over Sammy Gyamfi’s dollar gift saga

0

Political Science Lecturer at the University of Ghana, Dr. Kwame Asah-Asante, has criticised politicians for what he describes as sheer hypocrisy in their handling of the controversy involving a dollar gift from NDC Communications Officer Sammy Gyamfi to self-styled evangelist Patricia Oduro Koranteng, popularly known as Nana Agradaa.

Speaking on JoyNews’ , Dr. Asah-Asante described the situation as unfortunate but cautioned against treating it in isolation.

“It is unfortunate that what happened has happened. It is borne out of indiscretion—nothing more, nothing less. So my view is that the government will investigate and take an appropriate decision on that,” he stated.

He acknowledged Sammy Gyamfi’s public apology, describing it as a step in the right direction.

“Once you do that, it shows remorse. You have to show remorse, and it’s in there. There is also the fact that you have weighed your actions and, for that matter, you want to assure the public that there will not be a repeat of such an action,” he explained.

Dr. Asah-Asante noted that accepting responsibility voluntarily is a key part of good governance.

“It is a fine thing in politics that once you realise that you have gone wrong, you, on your own volition, come out to say that you are wrong. That is in line with governance processes.”

However, he said the larger issue lies in the double standards that characterise Ghanaian political life.

“Another issue that I can find in this area is the issue of hypocrisy in Ghanaian politics. I am not saying this to defend Sammy Gyamfi or whoever, but the hypocrisy here is that if you look at people giving gifts to their followers or their party people, look, a lot of political parties and politicians are guilty in this country.”

He cited a common practice among MPs that goes unchallenged.

“There are MPs who complain that their constituents besiege them in their offices and take money from them. Have we, as a society, commented on that?”

Dr. Asah-Asante also dismissed suggestions that the act would have been acceptable had it been done in private.

“Some are saying Sammy should’ve given the money in private—that would’ve passed. But you ask yourself, if it’s not okay in public, will it be okay in private? You see the hypocrisy in here.”

He pointed to a cultural dilemma in reconciling traditional values with professional ethics.

“We have been socialised as a society to give to the needy, to support and lend a helping hand. But when we do this, we are also caught in the ethics of our profession that say you shouldn’t do this or that.”

He warned that this confusion could present challenges for public officers in the future.

“There is a danger ahead of us as to whether people, especially public officers, can help those in need without coming under fire.”

Dr. Asah-Asante also highlighted gaps in the code of conduct regarding the giver of gifts.

“If you read the code of conduct, it is silent on the giver of a gift but talks about the recipient. What happens to the one who gives, and the person who receives and puts pressure on you? There are a lot of big conversations around this.”

He concluded with a call for national reflection.

“In light of societal demands and all that, I will urge people to reflect on the fact that, as a Ghanaian society, giving gifts or accepting gifts—is it wrong or is it not? If there’s a way we have to look at it, let’s look at it.”

Djokovic Andy Murray End Coaching Partnership Ahead of Wimbledon

0

Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray (L)

Novak Djokovic has parted ways with Andy Murray after a short-lived coaching stint, ending their collaboration by mutual agreement just months before Wimbledon.

The partnership began in November and saw Murray join Djokovic’s team as he aimed to extend his Grand Slam tally.

Under Murray’s guidance, Djokovic reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open before retiring due to injury. However, results since then have been disappointing, with the world No. 1 winning just one match in his last five tournaments and suffering a surprise defeat to 19-year-old Jakub Mensik in the Miami Open final.

“Thank you, coach Andy, for all the hard work, fun and support over the last six months – really enjoyed deepening our friendship,” Djokovic said in a farewell message.

Murray responded, “Thanks to Novak for the unbelievable opportunity to work together. I wish him all the best for the rest of the season.”

The decision means Murray won’t be in Djokovic’s box when the Serb attempts to win an eighth Wimbledon title in July.

Djokovic has accepted a wildcard for next week’s Geneva Open, still searching for form on clay after a first-round exit in Monte Carlo and missing the Italian Open without explanation.

Their coaching arrangement was initially described as “indefinite,” focused on the U.S. swing and select clay-court events. Despite its brevity—just four tournaments—the partnership drew praise, with Djokovic lauding Murray’s natural coaching instincts and tennis IQ.

Revealed – ‘Mini micro’ minority plans to impeach President John Mahama

0

The Minority in Parliament says it is considering impeachment proceedings against President John Mahama.

The NPP accuses him of orchestrating what they call an egregious constitutional breach that has left the country without an acting President.

According to the minority, President Mahama violated the 1992 Constitution, following the simultaneous absence of the President, Vice President, and Speaker of Parliament from the country without an Acting President being sworn in.

GUTA, AGI set 60-day deadline to cut prices as Cedi strengthens

0

The Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) and the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI) have announced a 60-day window for businesses to adjust prices in response to the Ghana cedi’s recent appreciation against the US dollar.

This decision followed a high-level meeting on Wednesday, May 14, with the Minister for Trade and Industry, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare. The meeting was convened amid growing calls from the public for market prices to reflect the cedi’s strengthening performance, which now sees it trading at approximately GH₵12.40 to the dollar.

Although prices of goods remain relatively unchanged, GUTA and AGI explained that there is a natural lag between changes in the exchange rate and price adjustments on the market due to older stock acquired at previous, higher rates.

GUTA President, Dr. Joseph Obeng, appealed to government to maintain the cedi’s current stability, assuring that traders would adjust prices as new stock arrives.

“The government should continue to do its good work by sustaining the appreciation of the cedi, and we will do our job. We will respond positively. The market forces will determine the prices, and they will respond accordingly,” he said.

“All that we need is for the government to sustain the dollar rate, and in two months, everybody in the country will witness that the business community also thinks about the consuming public. We depend on them to survive, so there is no way we will not pass on any gains when we have them.”

AGI President, Dr. Humphrey Ayim-Darke, shared a similar view, pledging that manufacturers are prepared to reflect the gains in their pricing.

“We commend the government and also want to state that we are committed to reflecting these gains in our pricing. Prices are ultimately determined by the forces of supply and demand. We believe sincerely that within the 60 days, the impact of the stronger cedi will be seen in the wholesale and retail prices.”

The Ministry of Trade expressed optimism about the sustainability of the cedi’s performance and reaffirmed government’s commitment to ensuring a stable economic environment.

I was uncertain about winning, but I didn’t defeat myself mentally’ – King Promise

King Promise won the TGMA 2025 Artiste of the Year King Promise won the TGMA 2025 Artiste of the Year

Ghanaian singer and songwriter Gregory Bortey Newman, popularly known as King Promise, has revealed that while he wasn’t certain of winning the ultimate award at the 2025 Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMAs), he made a conscious effort not to doubt himself.

Speaking in an interview on Daybreak Hitz with DJ Slim on May 13, 2025, King Promise shared that he chose to stay positive and hopeful, focusing on the possibility of success rather than defeat.

“It was the mind-set, you are never so sure like you don’t know the result, you don’t know what’s going to happen but in my mind, I couldn’t defeat myself. I couldn’t say if I don’t win, I told myself I’m not going to say if I don’t win. Why should I say that? If I win so it’s more like a mind-set thing” he stated.

When asked if he had his own speech and everything prepared before winning the award, he said that he didn’t prepare any speech but KillBeatz asked him to write something down because he had a feeling he would win the award.

“No I didn’t, just like last year I didn’t prepare anything. KillBeatz asked me if I have my speech ready and I told him no. then he said he had a feeling, KillBeatz never speaks of feelings and when he does it means it’s serious.

“So he asked me to write something and what I could think about me saying what I said at the end of my speech. I said when I came here same time seven years ago, I had seven nominations and I won zero,” King Promise said.

The “Terminator” hitmaker shared motivation to the up and coming artistes. He said they should keep working harder and never give up just as him and they will be recognised one day.

“Any young person watching me right now should use me as an example of resilience because I didn’t stop. When people laughed at me, it just served as fuel for me to work harder because as it was funny to them, for me I believe in God’s timing and look at me now, today I’m the chosen one,” he added.

‘This is an opposition that created the cedi crisis’

Fifi Fiavi Kwetey is the General Secretary of the NDC. File photo. Fifi Fiavi Kwetey is the General Secretary of the NDC. File photo.

The General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, has accused the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of attempting to distort Ghana’s economic narrative by taking credit for the recent appreciation of the cedi.

According to him, the NPP is scrambling to claim political glory for an economic recovery they had no hand in.

Speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express on May 13, 2025, Kwetey argued that the NPP is being disingenuous by celebrating the cedi’s stability while refusing to take responsibility for what he described as the economic mess they left behind in.

“They want to take credit for the recent cedi stability but forget that they were the very architects of the collapse,” he indicated.

He accused the NPP of cherry-picking economic indicators that suit their narratives, while ignoring the broader context of the financial difficulties that plagued their administration.

According to Fifi Kwetey, the NPP abandoned its economic responsibilities during its final years in office and has only resurfaced now that the NDC is enacting difficult but necessary reforms.

“It’s almost as if they caused the house to burn down and now want applause for showing up with a cup of water. They ran away from every negative indicator, the inflation, the debt, the hardships but now that the currency is inching back up, they want to suddenly own it,” he said.

Kwetey said that the NPP’s sudden interest in the economy is politically-motivated and a tactic to remain relevant.

He questioned why the party failed to take decisive actions during its tenure if it truly believed in its own economic management team.

“If they had that much faith in their own economic team, why did they spend their last year in power pointing fingers and hiding behind excuses?” he asked.

He added that the NPP’s lack of accountability in the face of crisis undermines their current attempt to appear as credible economic stewards.

He urged Ghanaians not to be misled by what he called a desperate attempt by the NPP to claim undeserved credit.

“This is an opposition that created the crisis. Now, they want to claim the recovery they did nothing to bring about,” he stated.

Carlo Ancelotti Named Brazil Coach

0

Carlo Ancelotti

Carlo Ancelotti will leave Real Madrid and take over as coach of the Brazil national team through the 2026 World Cup.

The Italian — Brazil’s first full-time foreign coach in a century — will officially take charge on May 25 after La Liga ends, the Brazilian Football Confederation said on Monday. Details of the deal were not released.

“Bringing Carlo Ancelotti to coach Brazil is more than a strategic movement. It is a statement to the world that we are determined to recover the top of the podium,” CBF President Ednaldo Rodrigues said.

“He is the greatest coach in history and, now, he will be with the greatest national team on the planet. Together, we will write new glorious chapters of Brazilian soccer.”

There was no immediate comment on the move from Ancelotti or Real Madrid.

The CBF added “Ancelotti starts his mission this week” in meetings with coordinator-general Rodrigo Caetano and former defender Juan, the confederation technical coordinator, so he can pick his squad for the next World Cup qualifiers against Ecuador and Paraguay in June.

Ancelotti’s contract with Madrid ends next year but Rodrigues said its expected to be terminated early. The CBF president in a video thanked Real Madrid president Florentino Perez “for the comprehension, dialogue and support that made this transaction possible.”

Meanwhile, Carlo Ancelotti has dismissed suggestions he had lost the love of Real Madrid and its fans but admitted the club may need fresh impetus.

He said: “I have never felt that Madrid did not love me. Madrid loves me. It has always shown me affection. I couldn’t be Madrid’s coach all my life. This ends for many reasons.”

“They Sponsored People Against Us” – Prof Gyampo Exposes Internal Sabotage in Anti-Galamsey Fight

0

Professor Ransford Gyampo, a vocal advocate against illegal mining, says he now sees a clear change in how his criticisms of the government’s handling of the galamsey crisis are being received as reported by Ghana Web.

Speaking in a recent interview, the academic and Ghana Shippers Authority CEO highlighted his continued frustration with the country’s slow response to the environmental and health risks posed by illegal mining.

“This galamsey thing, it’s too drastic a situation. Maybe we should allow all of us to start falling ill, maybe allow all of us to start dying,” he said, revealing the dire consequences of inaction.

Gyampo has long been outspoken about the devastating effects of galamsey on Ghana’s water bodies, forests, and local communities.

However, he notes that previous attempts to raise concern were often undermined, even from within the ranks of civil society.

According to him, internal sabotage was a real challenge. “They went their own way to sponsor some of our own members to form splinter groups,” he stated.

What’s changed now, Gyampo explains, is his ability to gauge how the public and political actors respond to his advocacy. “The difference now is that I can measure the body language, judge the response, and see the reception,” he said.

While Gyampo clarified that his comments are not a personal attack on former President Mahama or a dismissal of any government’s effort, he stressed the urgency of a more coordinated and sincere approach to solving the galamsey crisis.

Ghana’s FreezeLink gains international acclaim as Bloomberg recognises innovative Agri and Pharma solutions

0

In a proud moment for Ghanaian enterprise, FreezeLink, a company dedicated to transforming Africa’s agricultural sector, has been named among Bloomberg’s ‘African companies to watch’.

This acknowledgment shines a spotlight on the local company’s groundbreaking work in eliminating food and medicine waste through cold chain logistics and engineering solutions – particularly via its innovative solar-powered cold storage and pay-as-you-go (PAYGO) financing models.

Bloomberg’s citation places FreezeLink among a select group of African companies identified as “reshaping the continent’s economy through visionary leadership and innovative solutions.”

FreezeLink exemplifies this by directly addressing a fundamental bottleneck in Africa’s development. By providing affordable and sustainable cold storage infrastructure, the company not only removes significant post-harvest losses but also empowers farmers to access broader markets, thereby enhancing their incomes and contributing to greater food security.

This impact is amplified for consumers, who benefit from a more stable and safer supply of essential goods.

FreezeLink’s established expertise in the sensitive logistics of life-saving healthcare products further bolsters the reliability and quality inherent in its cold chain solutions.

The perennial challenge of post-harvest losses in African agriculture is finding a formidable adversary in Ghana’s FreezeLink. Solomon Kportuphey, a FreezeLink spokesperson, articulated the company’s strategic vision, stating, “Our ambition is to forge ‘Horticulture highways,’ seamlessly connecting African farmers to both local and global markets through the provision of essential cold storage, transport, and engineering services.”

Further amplifying FreezeLink’s international profile, the company’s CEO is scheduled to address the main plenary session of the upcoming Qatar Economic Forum, powered by Bloomberg.

This prominent platform will provide an opportunity to showcase FreezeLink’s impactful solutions to a global audience, alongside fellow speakers, including Michael Bloomberg, Tony Elumelu, and Elon Musk.

This achievement by FreezeLink underscores the potential of Ghanaian ingenuity to address critical challenges and drive positive change. It is a testament to the hard work and vision of those involved and a source of inspiration for aspiring entrepreneurs across the nation.

Don’t Dilute Pentecostal Identity – Wengam To Lecturers

Rev. Stephen Wengam

Lecturers of Assemblies of God, Ghana Theological and Missions Seminary (AGTMS) have been meeting in Accra on strategies to maintain their spiritual solidity and enhance their intellectual capacity.

The programme was facilitated by Africa’s Hope, a US-based non-governmental organisation (NGO).

The General Superintendent of Assemblies of God, Ghana, Rev. Stephen Wengam called on the participants to invest in their personal development, and not “lose sight of deep spirituality which is a core part of our Pentecostal distinctiveness.”

He bemoaned “a trend where Pentecostal scholars, in their bid to bridge the knowledge gap, are beginning to play down on spirituality, especially, prayer.”

Rev. Wengam explained that Assemblies of God, Ghana chose as its theme for 2025, “Pray Without Ceasing For Supernatural Manifestations (1 Thessalonians 5:17),” to help correct this anomaly.

The General Superintendent emphasised that “lecturers cannot give what you do not have,” adding that the future security of the Pentecost distinctiveness largely depends on them.

The Ghana Gold Board and the National Security have intercepted a gold smuggling operation, leading to the arrest of some individuals of foreign nationality involved in the illegal activity.

According to videos shared on Facebook by Channel One and sighted by GhanaWeb on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, the arrested suspects were allegedly found in possession of gold bars, a substantial amount of cash, and ammunition.

Additional media reports indicate that currency counting machines were also among the items seized by the authorities.

The videos show the intercepted items wrapped in blue polythene bags, along with leather bags containing various other materials, all of which have been tagged for easy identification.

The report further noted that an official press briefing is expected to be held soon to provide comprehensive details on the operation, including information about the apprehended suspects and the items seized.

Additional information from citinewsroom.com stated that according to the police, the suspects were arrested in Anyinam, located in the Eastern Region of Ghana.

The operation reinforces the government’s commitment to cracking down on illegal activities in the gold mining sector, adding to several recent raids that have resulted in the arrest of suspects and the confiscation of gold materials.

Generational change in music is important, but we shouldn’t throw away our culture

Kenneth Appiah is a gospel musician and founder of gospel group, Soul Winners Kenneth Appiah is a gospel musician and founder of gospel group, Soul Winners

Gospel musician and founder of gospel group Soul Winners, Kenneth Appiah has stated that while change in music is necessary, Ghanaian artistes must preserve and promote their cultural heritage.

In an interview on Adom TV, Kenneth Appiah acknowledged that the world is evolving, and with it comes new trends and shifts in the music industry.

While he believes generational change is necessary and inevitable, he cautioned against abandoning the cultural roots that define Ghana’s musical identity.

“As the world evolves, new generations come up and different changes take place. However, one piece of advice I would give is that we should not abandon our cultural landmarks, as doing so would mean losing an important part of our identity. I urge everyone to make efforts to maintain and promote our cultural heritage,” he said.

According to Kenneth Appiah, cultural identity plays a role in shaping the uniqueness of Ghanaian music. He encouraged musicians especially the younger generation to find ways to incorporate cultural elements into their work, even as they innovate.

To support his point, the veteran gospel singer mentioned specific traditional Ghanaian dances that he believes should be promoted and celebrated more often.

“For example, we should help popularize dances like Borborbor from the Volta Region, Kpanlogo from the Ga people, and Adowa. These aspects of our culture deservet be popularise,” he added.

Is there a vacuum of power in Ghana?

0

The three most powerful in Ghana – the President of the Republic, the Vice-President and the Speaker of Parliament – are all currently out of the country.

President John Dramani Mahama is out of the jurisdiction to attend to other obligations under the African Union; Vice President Prof Naana Jane Opoku-Agyeman is also out of the country seeking medical attention; while the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, is also out of the country for an unknown reason.

This has led to a section of the public, mostly proponents of the opposition, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), saying that the country is in a constitutional crisis because the seat of government is vacant, with the leadership of the party threatening to start impeachment proceedings against President Mahama.

They accuse the government of violating the 1992 Constitution of Ghana because nobody is heading the country per the provision of the constitution, which is unacceptable.

They argue that with the President, Vice President and the Speaker of Parliament being out of the country, the Chief Justice, per the provision of the constitution, should be the Acting President, but this is not the case because of the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

But is their argument legally sound? What do the laws of the country say about the issue at hand?

Does the Speaker of Parliament or the Chief Justice become Acting President when both the president and the vice president are out of the country?

Article 60:

Article 60 of the 1992 Constitution touches on the role of “the Vice President” and the “succession to the presidency.”

Here are the exact words of Article 60 on the matter at hand:

“(8) Whenever the President is absent from Ghana or is for any other reason unable to perform the functions of his office, the Vice President shall perform the functions of the President until the President returns or is able to perform his functions.

“(9) The Vice President shall, before commencing to perform the functions of the President under clause (6) of this article, take and subscribe the oath set out in the Second Schedule to this Constitution in relation to the office of President.

“(10) The Vice President shall, upon assuming office as President under clause (6) of this article, nominate a person to the office of Vice-President subject to approval by Parliament,” parts of the article read.

From the sections of Article 60 listed above, it is very clear what should be done when the President is out of the country or is incapacitated from performing his duties.

The provision of the article, which is, perhaps, causing the headache at hand, is Article 60(11).

This article states that “Where the President and the Vice President are both unable to perform the functions of the President, the Speaker of Parliament shall perform those functions until the President or the Vice President is able to perform those functions or a new President assumes office, as the case may be.”

The challenge of this provision is whether the phrase “unable to perform the functions” includes the Vice President and the President being out of the country.

Article 60(8) states that when the President is “absent from Ghana or is for any other reason unable to perform the functions of his office,” the Vice President should be the Acting President.

The question now is whether the president and vice president’s absence from the country means that they are unable to perform their duties, which brings in the question of the Speaker of Parliament acting as Acting President.

Despite the confusion highlighted above, one clarity on the “succession to the presidency” is the role of the Chief Justice. Nowhere in Article 60 is it stated that the Chief Justice should be the Acting President in the absence of the President, the Vice-President or the Speaker.

In fact, the only hint of the role of the Chief Justice is the Acting President taking the oath of the Office of the President, which is the preserve of the head of the country’s legislature, per the Second Schedule to the 1992 Constitution.

The constitution does not address a situation where the President, the Vice President and the Speaker of Parliament are all out of the country, which has opened the provisions of Article 60 to several interpretations.

Or maybe it was clear in the minds of the framers of the 1992 Constitution, the distinction between the President and/or the Vice President being out of the country and them being unable to perform their functions.

Here is what legal experts have said on the matter:

The Member of Parliament for Suame, John Darko, who is the legal counsel for the Minority Caucus of Parliament, has said that the current situation violates the provisions of Article 60.

He argues that the President, the Vice President and the Speaker of Parliament not being in the country creates a vacuum at the seat of government, blaming President John Dramani Mahama for what is happening.

Speaking in an interview with JoyNews on Tuesday, May 13, 2025, the Minority’s Legal Counsel, John Darko – Member of Parliament for Suame – called on Ghanaians to condemn the president’s actions.

He emphasised that the Minority is prepared to invoke constitutional provisions to remove President Mahama from office if necessary.

“The problem is that at the time the President was leaving, the Speaker of Parliament had already left. So, when the President chose to travel, he knew – or at the very least ought to have known – that his departure would create a vacuum and constitute a breach of the Constitution. But Emperor Mr President decided, ‘I am the President and I can do whatever I like – damn the consequences,’ and left the country.

“Is that why we voted for the President – to violate our Constitution? We will keep bringing this up, and at the appropriate time, if we must invoke the impeachment provisions, we will do so. We will not sit idly by while the Constitution entrusted to us is violated without consequences,” he said.

Prof Asare:

Renowned US-based Ghanaian lawyer and scholar, Prof Stephen Kwaku Asare, has argued that the laws on presidential succession are very clear and do not mean that the absence of the president and his vice means the Speaker should be the Acting President.

“Crucially, unlike Article 60(8), Article 60(11) drops any reference to ‘absence from Ghana.’ That omission is intentional and telling. The framers clearly distinguished between ‘absence from Ghana’ and ‘inability to perform’. The former is routine and expected. The latter is serious—death, resignation, illness, or incapacitation,” he explained.

He added, “There is no clause that says if the President and Vice-President go to Togo, the Speaker gets to play President. There is no ‘Kotoka clause’ in the Constitution. That fiction was manufactured by judicial misinterpretation; not democratic mandate.”

El Chapo & Deputy Jesus

0

El Chapo, Kasongo, Hustler, Deputy Jesus and Chicken Seller are just some that he has acquired in recent years.

As is often the case when people are given alternative monikers, some are affectionate but some are intended to mock, while others reflect a profound anger.

A history of the president’s aliases offer a window into how the perception of him has changed.

Ruto has acknowledged the rechristening trend, joking recently that Kenyans are “finishing” him with the numerous labels.

“You have given me so many names. I had the name William Kipchirchir Samoei Ruto. You added Survivor… Zakayo… now you are at Kasongo [the title of a Congolese song about abandonment and heartbreak]. Will you stop at 10, or should I prepare for more?” he recently asked.

The crowd, at a rally in the capital, Nairobi, responded that they had even more.

Before he was elected president in 2022, Ruto attracted handles that bolstered his reputation as a man of the people.

Hustler – Kenyan parlance for someone eking out a living against the odds – helped portray him as someone who would prioritise the needs of the struggling folk.

Chicken Seller, referring to his childhood when he hawked poultry on the roadside, resonated with many who saw his life as an epitome of their own.

“These were very positive [names]. They sold him to the public in terms of votes,” political analyst Prof Herman Manyora told the BBC, arguing that they helped catapult him into the top job.

“Names really stick with Ruto,” he added.

But the president has been a high-profile figure in Kenyan politics for a long time, including serving as deputy president for nine years until 2022, and has never been far from controversy.

Prof Manyora recalls the label Arap Mashamba – which translates as “son of farms” – coined just under a decade ago and relates to Ruto’s ownership of vast tracts of land across the country. Concerns have been raised about how some of these have been acquired.

In 2013, a court ordered Ruto to surrender a 100-acre (40-hectare) farm and compensate a farmer who had accused him of grabbing it during the 2007 post-election violence. He denied any wrongdoing.

Ruto’s penchant for quoting Bible verses also earned him the Deputy Jesus tag. He has also been given the name Nabii, or prophet.

However, it is since his rise to the presidency that the nickname manufacturers have been working overtime – with at least a dozen being created – and they have become increasingly critical.

One that has stood out is Zakayo – Swahili for the name Zaccheaus, a Biblical figure who is portrayed as a greedy tax collector who climbed a tree to see Jesus.

Ruto’s government introduced a raft of unpopular taxes and many Kenyans began to say that he had betrayed the “hustlers”.

“He failed to deliver after becoming president,” Prof Manyora said.

The pain of paying more taxes, and a perception that the extra money will be wasted, is the focus of many conversations.

Last year, young people came out onto the streets of Nairobi for weeks of protests, which turned deadly, against a fresh government proposal to raise taxes that was later dropped.

The chant “Ruto must go” became a rallying call for the demonstrators and now Must Go has become another way to refer to the leader.

The creative christeners have also focussed on the allegation that the president enjoys foreign travel.

Hence the title Vasco da Ganya – a play on the name of the 15th Century Portuguese explorer, Vasco da Gama, and the Swahili word danganya, which means “to lie”.

Ruto’s honesty has also been called into question with Kaunda Uongoman, which mimics late Congolese musician Kanda Bongoman.

The first part refers to the president’s love for the Kaunda suit – a safari jacket with matching trousers – and Uongoman, which incorporates the Swahili word uongo, meaning “lies”.

But the president seems impervious to this volley of verbal attacks.

Government spokesman Isaac Mwaura said the manifold nicknames “don’t raise concerns” in the office of the president but simply “capture how people view a person”.

Ruto is “very hands-on and doing his best to transform the economy… It’s normal for any leader to have many nicknames as this signifies his various attributes and initiatives as a leader”, he told the BBC.

Mwaura also argued that the government has had to raise taxes to pay for new projects, reduce the budget deficit and fix the economy.

Nevertheless, when people have gone beyond inventing new names and used satire and forms of art to ridicule the president, there has been a negative reaction from officials.

Some cartoons and AI-generated images, including showing the president in a casket, have been described as “reckless” and “distasteful”.

Some of the alleged producers of this online content have been victims of abductions. This, Prof Manyora said, should be seen as a sign of intolerance by the government.

Lachon Kiplimo, a 23-year-old university student, said that while he supported the president, some of the promises he has made have been “unrealistic”, which fuels the nicknames.

He cited the use of El Chapo, referring to the former Mexican drug lord, after Ruto promised a machine that would produce a million chapatis (also known as chapo in Kenya) every day to feed schoolchildren in the capital.

Mr Kiplimo however reckons that the way the president brushes off the monikers, and in fact seems to embrace them, shows how strong he is.

Prof Manyora believes the young people who come up with the alternative labels for the president do it as a form of catharsis, a way of releasing tension.

This view is backed up by 24-year-old student Margaret Wairimu Kahura, who said that many Kenyans “are in a lot of pain”.

She feels that the mockery is a way of letting Ruto know how the youth are feeling.

She says that no other Kenyan president has been subjected to this level of lampooning, and “so this is unique [but] in a bad way”.

It is true that previous heads of state had nicknames but they have not been so numerous.

The last President, Uhuru Kenyatta, was called Kamwana (“young boy”), Jayden (a Kenyan reference to a pampered or lazy child) and Wamashati (for his love of print shirts).

His predecessor, Mwai Kibaki, was known as General Kiguoya (a general who is afraid) and Fence Sitter.

Perhaps the age of social media, with its insatiable appetite for new content to keep people amused, has increased the trend towards name calling.

But for many, like Ms Kahura, the volume of nicknames for Ruto are a genuine reflection of “the different problems that people are facing”.

NDC Legal Director questions rationale behind leak of memo in case against former Signals Bureau Chief

0

The Director of Legal Affairs for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Godwin Edudzi Tamakloe, has raised serious concerns about a leaked memo that has surfaced in the ongoing legal proceedings against the former head of the Signals Bureau, Mr. Kwabena Adu Boahene.

According to Mr. Tamakloe, the memo, authored by Mr. Boahene and reportedly addressed to the National Security Coordinator to explain expenditure decisions made during his tenure, was never intended for public circulation.

Govt deports 3 foreigners, prosecutes 3 others over gold smuggling

0

The Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) is drawing a clear distinction in its enforcement approach to gold smuggling, as it begins implementing the newly enacted Ghana Gold Board Act, 2025 (Act 1140).

In a press briefing held on Tuesday, May 14, GoldBod spokesperson Prince Minkah announced that three foreign nationals arrested prior to the April 30 deadline for attempted gold smuggling will be deported, while another three, caught after the law took effect, will be prosecuted.

The six suspects, all foreign nationals, were picked up in two separate operations—one in the Ashanti Region and another in Anyinam.

According to GoldBod, the timing of each arrest determined the legal consequences the suspects now face.

“They will be repatriated to their home country to reunite with their families,” Minkah clarified.

The deportees, all Indian nationals, were arrested before the new regulations came into force. Authorities said that although they were in violation of Ghana’s existing gold trading framework, their actions did not yet fall under the punitive scope of Act 1140.

However, the second group, apprehended in Anyinam after April 30, is not as fortunate. They will face prosecution under the new legislation, which reserves Ghana’s local gold trading exclusively for the Gold Board.

“If you’re a foreigner and caught trading gold illegally, you will face the law,” Minkah cautioned, emphasizing the strict penalties outlined in the new legal regime.

Authorities recovered several items from the latter group, including gold counting machines and cash in U.S. dollars. These assets have been confiscated and will be used as evidence in their prosecution.

The Ghana Gold Board Act, passed to curb illegal gold exports and tighten control over the mineral trade, granted a transition period for foreign actors to exit the domestic gold market. That window closed on April 30.

Mr. Minkah reiterated that the law aims to restore integrity to the gold trade, reduce smuggling, and ensure that the value generated from Ghana’s natural resources benefits the nation directly.

As enforcement escalates, GoldBod says it is boosting surveillance and strengthening collaboration with security agencies to prevent future breaches.

“The rules are clear. Foreigners can no longer operate in our local gold trade. There will be no excuses moving forward,” he warned.

Disclosing corruption for public good is justifiable – Martin Kpebu defends Adu-Boahene

0

Private legal practitioner, Martin Kpebu, has clarified that disclosing state secrets, even if punishable by law, does not amount to treason under Ghana’s Constitution—particularly when the information serves the public interest.

Speaking on TV3’s New Day on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, Mr. Kpebu addressed growing debate surrounding revelations made by embattled former National Signals Bureau (NSB) boss, Kwabena Adu-Boahene, who is currently facing charges for allegedly diverting state funds into a personal account.

Gov’t deports 3 foreigners, set to prosecute 3 others over gold smuggling

0

The Ghana Gold Board has announced that three out of six foreign nationals arrested for smuggling gold will be deported, while the remaining three will face prosecution under Ghana’s new gold trading laws.

The decision was disclosed by Prince Minkah, spokesperson for the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), during a press conference in Accra on Tuesday, May 14.

A total of six suspects were apprehended in two separate operations.

The first batch of three suspects was arrested in the Ashanti Region before the enforcement of the Ghana Gold Board Act, 2025 (Act 1140).

These individuals will be deported since their arrest occurred before the April 30 deadline for foreigners to exit Ghana’s local gold trade.

First batch of arrest that will be deported.

“They will be repatriated to their home country to reunite with their families,” Minkah stated.

The second batch of three suspects was arrested in Anyinam after the new law took effect.

These individuals will face prosecution under the new law, which reserves local gold trading exclusively for the Gold Board. Authorities confiscated gold counting machines and cash (USD) from them.

Mr Minkah stressed that the Ghana Gold Board Act strictly prohibits foreign nationals from participating in Ghana’s local gold trade.

“If you’re a foreigner and caught trading gold illegally, you will face the law,” he warned.

While the first group was given leniency because their arrest preceded the deadline, the second group will face the full rigors of the law.

The Ghana Gold Board Act, 2025 was introduced to regulate gold trading and curb illegal exports.

Foreigners were given until April 30 to exit the local gold market, with strict penalties for violators.

The three deportees, all Indian nationals, will be sent back to their country. The remaining three will be prosecuted, with their confiscated assets held as evidence.

Authorities have vowed to intensify surveillance to prevent further smuggling attempts.

If Mahama doesn’t sack Sammy Gyamfi by next week, he will have me to contend with — Ellen Daaku

0

According to GhanaWeb, Ellen Ama Ofosuaa Daaku, a representative of the New Patriotic Party’s Communications Team, has urged former President John Dramani Mahama to relieve Sammy Gyamfi of his duties as Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board.

This call follows the circulation of a video in which Gyamfi appears to give out US dollars to Evangelist Patricia Asiedua Oduro Koranteng, also known as Nana Agradaa.

Daaku believes the incident contradicts the National Democratic Congress’ recently introduced ethical guidelines.

Speaking during an interview on Angel TV on May 13, 2025, she noted Gyamfi’s prominent role within the party and his close ties to Mahama, implying that his actions undermine the party’s credibility.

She further suggested that Gyamfi could become a fall guy if the party chooses to enforce its internal rules strictly.

Referring to the timing of the video’s release shortly after the launch of the party’s code of conduct, she warned that failure to take disciplinary action could weaken the initiative.

Daaku also cited a past case involving Victoria Hammah, a former deputy minister who was dismissed from office after making controversial remarks in a leaked audio recording.

Drawing parallels, she implied that similar standards should apply to Gyamfi, who is now facing public scrutiny over the dollar-sharing video.

Daaku expressed her readiness to push for Gyamfi’s removal if action is not taken promptly, giving a one-week deadline for Mahama to respond.

She said, “If Mahama doesn’t sack Sammy Gyamfi, I, Ama, am ready. By next week, if we come and Sammy Gyamfi is still at post, he will have me to contend with.”

Over 900 farmers in Tano North screen for various health condition

By Christopher Tetteh

Koforidua, (Ahafo), May 14, GNA – More than 900 farmers in the Tano North Municipality of the Ahafo Region have been screened for various health conditions.

The free health screening, conducted by the organisers of the Nightingale Prestigious Awards (NPA) scheme was spearheaded by Miss Freda Asante Asuama, the 2024 overall best winner of the Awards.

Ms Asuama is a public health nurse and midwife at the Wenchi Methodist Hospital in the Bono Region also distributed1000 exercise books, sanitary pads and other educational materials to some selected basic and Senior High Schools in the area.

The beneficiaries of the exercise, held at Koforidua, were mostly women farmers, chiefs and queens as well as students and pupils from the various cocoa growing communities in the Municipality.

They were drawn from communities including Susuaho, Koforidua, Twuahu and Duayaw- Nkwanta, and were screened for high blood pressure, sugar levels as well as eye, ear, nose and throat related complications and given free medications.

However, those who were diagnosed with serious complications were referred to health facilities for medical care.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on the side-lines of the exercise, Ms explained that the event was in line with a project she was implementing as the 2024 winner of the NPA.

She said the project also aimed at inspiring young people, particularly girls to take their education seriously and to achieve high academic excellence, saying the school children need to know their health status.

Ms Asuama said the distribution of the free sanitary pads would help sustain the interest of girls in schools and thereby improve their studies.

She also expressed concern about the increasing trend of substance abuse and peddling among the youth, including teenagers, and called for concerted and decisive approaches towards tackling the problem.

Ms Asuama said substance abuse and addiction could lead duodenal ulcers, foetal alcohol syndrome, infertility, mental disorders, liver cirrhosis, stroke, and heart enlargement.

She called on parents, traditional authorities, community leaders religious organisations to come together and find lasting solutions contributing to drug abuse and peddling among the youth.

It will benefit him if he responds – Vida Adutwumwaa on King Promise ignoring Stonebwoy’s message

Vida Adutwumwaa is the Public Relations Officer of Burniton Music Group Vida Adutwumwaa is the Public Relations Officer of Burniton Music Group

The Public Relations Officer of Burniton Music Group, Vida Adutwumwaa, has stated that it would be in King Promise’s best interest to respond to Stonebwoy’s congratulatory message after winning the Artiste of the Year.

Stonebwoy, who was one of the leading contenders for the Artiste of the Year award at the 2025 TGMAs, lost out to King Promise.

Despite the outcome of the event, Stonebwoy took to X on May 12, 2025, to congratulate King Promise. In his message, he welcomed the “Paris” hitmaker into what he called “the league of winners.”

However, during an interview on Hitz FM on May 13, 2025, King Promise played down the congratulatory message. He said he had been told about it but didn’t think it was a big deal.

“I have been told about his congratulatory message. I don’t think it’s a big deal. I’ve responded to a few, but I haven’t been on X today. They were telling me about it, and I told them to cool down. It’s not a big deal,” King Promise said.

In response, Vida Adutwumwaa, speaking on the ‘Street is Watching’ podcast hosted by DJ Slim, said while Stonebwoy’s team does not expect a response from King Promise, it would actually be in King Promise’s best interest to acknowledge the message.

“We are not expecting him to respond. If he does, what will it change? It will rather benefit him if he responds. For us, we have extended our hand; whether it’s accepted or not is up to them,” she said.

Hiding the Mike Oquaye report indicates that the detail is horrible – Kwesi Pratt

The Managing Editor of the Insight Newspaper, Kwesi Pratt Jnr, has taken a swipe at the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for failing to make public the findings of the report compiled by Professor Mike Oquaye.

The report, which contains critical assessments of the party’s defeat in the 2024 general elections, has reportedly been kept away from both party members and the general public.

Speaking on Good Morning Ghana on Metro TV on May 14, 2025, Pratt said that keeping the report away from both party members and the public is deliberate to hide damaging information.

“Hiding the report indicates that the detail is horrible, but there is need for transparency and accountability within the party,” he indicated.

Pratt suggested that the decision to withhold the report may stem from fear of political backlash.

“If the report contains insights that are damaging, it is precisely those insights that must be addressed if the party wants to rebuild public trust,” he stated.

He further advised that suppressing uncomfortable truths could harm the NPP more than the report itself.

Pratt questioned whether key stakeholders within the party, including grassroots members, have been given access to the contents of the report.

He emphasised that political renewal must begin with openness and a willingness to confront inconvenient realities.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) officially received the final report from the committee led by former Speaker of Parliament, Prof Aaron Mike Oquaye, which was tasked with investigating the party’s defeat in the 2024 general elections.

The 12-member committee was established to examine the factors behind the NPP’s loss of both the presidency and its parliamentary majority in the 2024 Election.

The party lost the presidency to the National Democratic Congress’ John Dramani Mahama and experienced a significant decline in its parliamentary seats.

The report was presented during an emergency National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held on Wednesday, April 16, at the Alisa Hotel in Accra.

Following the presentation, NPP General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, confirmed receipt of the report and assured that its contents and recommendations would be communicated in due time.

Real Madrid considering selling Vinicius Jr after demanding double Mbappe’s salary in contract talks

Spanish giants Real Madrid are mulling over the potential sale of one of their star players, Vinicius Junior, after making huge financial demands in negotiations for a contract renewal.

It is reported that the Brazilian wants to feel valued regarding his brilliant performances in aiding the team to win UEFA Champions League titles as well as La Liga.

According to Spanish outlet Marca, with his contract ending in 2027, he is said to demand a significant increment in his salary, which would be double what French attacker Kylian Mbappe earns.

As per the Spanish outlet, there remains a difference between the salary increase requested by the player, which would take his deal from less than £14.3m (€17m) per annum to a staggering £25.5m (€30m).

Vinicius’ current deal, which he signed in 2022, is similar to high earner Mbappe’s, who joined the club in the 2024/2025 season.

However, in a bid to get the deal over the line, representatives of Vinicius at Roc Nation Brazil are purportedly in active discussions with Saudi Pro League sides, which are thought to be advanced, although nothing has been signed yet.

Despite the contract renewal standoff, Vinicius has made it clear that he wants to stay at Madrid for a long time and make history.

“I have a contract until 2027, but I have always said that I want to play here for a long time, to be able to make history and to receive the affection of the fans along with the president, all the players, and the coaching staff.

“God willing, hopefully in the next few days, all the negotiations can be resolved, and I can stay here for much longer,” he said, as reported by Mail Sport.

White South Africans going to US are cowards, Ramaphosa says

0

President Cyril Ramaphosa has called a group of 59 white South Africans who have moved to the US to resettle “cowards”, saying “they’ll be back soon”.

The group of Afrikaners arrived in the US on Monday after President Donald Trump granted them refugee status, saying they faced racial discrimination.

But Ramaphosa said those who wanted to leave were not happy with efforts to address the inequities of the apartheid past, terming their relocation a “sad moment for them”.

“As South Africans, we are resilient. We don’t run away from our problems. We must stay here and solve our problems. When you run away you are a coward, and that’s a real cowardly act,” he added.

Trump and his close ally, South Africa-born Elon Musk, have said there was a “genocide” of white farmers in South Africa – a claim that has been widely discredited.

The US has also accused the South African government of seizing land from white farmers without paying compensation.

More than 30 years after the end of decades of rule by South Africa’s white minority, black farmers own only a small fraction of the country’s best farmland, with the majority still in white hands, leading to anger over the slow pace of change.

In January President Ramaphosa signed a controversial law allowing the government to seize privately owned land without compensation in certain circumstances, when it is deemed “equitable and in the public interest”.

But the government says no land has yet been seized under the act.

Trump has offered to resettle the white Afrikaners, descendants of mostly Dutch settlers, saying they were fleeing a “terrible situation” in South Africa.

Speaking on Monday at an agricultural exhibition in the Free State province, Ramaphosa said the Afrikaners were moving to the US because they were not “favourably disposed” to efforts aimed at addressing the country’s challenges.

“If you look at all national groups in our country, black and white, they’ve stayed in this country because it’s our country and we must not run away from our problems. We must stay here and solve our problems,” Ramaphosa said.

“I can bet you that they will be back soon because there is no country like South Africa,” he added.

His “coward” remark angered some social media users, who condemned it as an insult to aggrieved white South Africans.

The group of Afrikaners were welcomed by top US officials who claimed they had been “living under a shadow of violence and terror” in South Africa.

“Welcome to the land of the free,” Deputy Secretary of State Chris Landau said as he received the South Africans who landed at Dulles airport near Washington DC on Monday.

Some held young children and waved small American flags in the arrival area adorned with red, white and blue balloons on the walls.

Earlier on Monday, President Ramaphosa told an Africa CEO forum in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, that he had recently told Trump during a phone call the US assessment of the situation was “not true”.

“We’re the only country on the continent where the colonisers came to stay and we have never driven them out of our country,” he added, dismissing claims Afrikaners were being persecuted.

Ramaphosa said dozens of white South Africans who arrived in the US on Monday “don’t fit the bill” for refugees.

Sammy Gyamfi must go, just like Victoria Hammah – NPP communicator

A member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Communications team Ellen Ama Ofosuaa Daaku has stated the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board, Sammy Gyamfi must be sacked just like Victoria Hammah was in John Mahama’s first term in office.

Ellen Ama Daaku recalled President Mahama’s past disciplinary actions within the NDC citing Victoria Hammah, a former Deputy Minister, who he dismissed after a leaked recording suggested she would quit politics if she had access to $1 million.

GoldBod, National Security foil attempt by foreigners to smuggle gold

0

The Ghana Gold Board, in collaboration with National Security, has arrested three Indian nationals for engaging in illegal gold trading, bringing the total number of foreigners arrested to six.

According to the police, the suspects were arrested in Anyinam, located in the Eastern Region of Ghana.

Items retrieved during the operation included gold bars, stacks of cash, and money-counting machines.

This latest arrest follows an earlier one on April 29, 2025, involving three other Indian nationals, which occurred before the Ghana Gold Board’s official announcement directing foreign nationals to exit Ghana’s gold trading market.

However, according to the Head of Public Relations at the Ghana Gold Board, Prince Minkah, the three recently arrested individuals will be arraigned to face the full rigour of the law.

NSA Boss Outlines Vision For Modern Sports Infrastructure In Ghana

0

Yaw Ampofo Ankrah

The Director General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, says Ghana is shifting from short-term stadium renovations to a long-term strategy focused on modernizing the country’s sports infrastructure.

Mr. Ankrah emphasised that the goal is not just to refurbish existing structures but to build durable, world-class facilities.

“Our vision goes beyond renovation. It’s about re-engineering—building facilities that are modern, durable, and capable of hosting international competitions,” he said.

While acknowledging the recent renovation works at various stadia nationwide, he stressed the need for a more forward-thinking approach.

“We need stadiums that can serve the nation for decades, rather than constantly spending on renovations that don’t last,” he added.

Mr. Ankrah also appealed to stakeholders across the sports sector to support this new direction, aimed at transforming Ghana’s sporting infrastructure for the benefit of future generations.

KAIPTC launches Political Advisor Course to bolster Peace Support Operations in Africa

0

By James Amoh Junior, GNA

Accra, May 14, GNA – The Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC) has opened its 2025 Political Advisor Course for Peace Support Operations in Africa.

The course, co-developed and co-funded by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Defence and the KAIPTC, aims at enhancing the analytical and diplomatic capabilities of personnel deployed to peace missions across the continent.

The two-week course, which has participants from the sub-region, will cover topics including negotiation and mediation, reporting and briefing, public diplomacy, and media engagement.

It is designed to equip participants with internationally recognised competencies required for advising mission commanders and heads in UN, AU, and ECOWAS peace operations.

The Political Advisor Course serves as a critical component of KAIPTC’s broader mandate to strengthen peace support operations through research, training, and partnerships with international institutions.

Air Commodore David Anetey Akrong, the Commandant of KAIPTC, underscored the increasing need for well-trained political advisors within multi-dimensional peace operations, particularly in a context of rising regional instability and fragile states.

“The African continent has witnessed a surge in international efforts to end wars, stabilise fragile states, and rebuild war-torn societies,” he said.

Air Commodore Akrong observed that the global security landscape – particularly across the African continent – had become increasingly complex over the past decade.

He noted that conflicts now bore national, regional, and global consequences, fuelled by factors such as radicalisation, terrorism, transnational organised crime, and foreign influence operations.

The impact of these crises, he admitted, were far-reaching, resulting in mass civilian suffering, displacement, food insecurity, environmental degradation, and the disruption of local and regional economies.

“All these challenges combined deprive individuals and entire societies of peace, prosperity, and sustainable development,” the Commandant said.

According to Air Commodore Akrong, addressing such multidimensional conflicts required personnel with robust, cross-cutting expertise.

He stated that those involved in peacebuilding and post-conflict recovery must be well-equipped to operate under increasingly comprehensive mandates, underscoring the critical role of political advisors in contemporary peace support operations.

Mr Jürgen Heissel, the Austrian Ambassador to Ghana, who declared the course officially open, commended KAIPTC for its continued commitment to capacity building and praised Ghana for its role as a regional anchor of stability.

“Ghana and Austria share a commitment to democracy, security, and the rule of law,” he stated.

He emphasized that Austria’s diplomatic and security cooperation with Ghana and the wider West African region was grounded in shared values, citing projects such as military dog training and peacekeeping collaboration as examples of their bilateral engagement.

Austria, which has deployed over 100,000 troops to UN peacekeeping missions, is also a candidate for a seat on the United Nations Security Council for 2027–2028.

Amb. Heissel highlighted Austria’s interest in contributing meaningfully to global peace and security by addressing issues such as terrorism, climate-related security threats, and hybrid warfare.

“Those engaged in rebuilding war-torn societies under increasingly multi-dimensional mandates require broad expertise and skills,” he said.

The Austrian Ambassador urged participants to fully engage and said, “your active engagement and exchange will enrich and deepen everybody’s understanding and benefit the missions and institutions you represent.”

Don’t sack Sammy Gyamfi – Victoria Hamah tells Mahama

0

Former Deputy Communications Minister Victoria Hamah has appealed to President John Dramani Mahama to issue a formal reprimand, rather than dismissing Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), Sammy Gyamfi, following a controversial dollar donation to former fetish priestess-turned-evangelist Patricia Asiedua Asiamah, popularly known as Nana Agradaa.

The controversy arose after a video surfaced on social media showing Gyamfi handing over bundles of U.S. dollars to Nana Agradaa during a public event. The gesture sparked widespread condemnation from civil society groups and political opponents, who described it as inappropriate and a sign of poor judgment.

In response to the backlash, Gyamfi issued a public apology, admitting the act was a lapse in judgment and expressing remorse.

However, in a social media post on Wednesday, May 14, Hamah acknowledged that Gyamfi’s action pricked the sensibilities of Ghanaians but argued that a reprimand should be given rather than a dismissal from office.

“I respectfully submit that a formal reprimand, rather than exclusion from office, represents the most constitutionally sound and developmentally judicious response. This recommendation emerges not as an attempt to trivialise the gravity of the situation, but rather as a call for balanced adjudication – one that recognises the necessity of accountability while remaining anchored in the principles of mentorship, institutional resilience, and democratic maturation,” she said.

NDC rates government’s 120-day performance at 54%

0

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has rated President John Mahama’s administration at 54 per cent for its performance in the first 120 days, describing the score as fair progress under difficult circumstances inherited from the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) government.

Speaking in an interview on JoyNews’ PM Express on Tuesday, May 13, 2025, NDC General Secretary Mr Fifi Fiavi Kwetey said the party had no illusions about achieving perfection within such a short period but was encouraged by the initial strides made.

“We weren’t expecting excellence in four months, given the state of the country we inherited after eight years of NPP leadership. Achieving 52 to 54 per cent against our own targets, in this context, is a start,” Mr Kwetey said.

The party’s internal assessment, he noted, aligns closely with findings from independent groups such as IMANI, which rated the government’s performance at 52 per cent. The NPP, on the other hand, issued a lower score of 46 per cent.

Mr Kwetey said the NDC’s leadership is determined to change the style of governance in the country. According to him, the party is committed to doing things differently and holding itself to a higher standard.

“We will not tolerate short-changing the country,” he said. “We are committed to a reset—doing things properly.”

He pointed to the recently launched code of conduct by President Mahama as evidence of efforts to tackle corruption. He acknowledged, though, that the provision allowing officials to accept gifts up to GH¢20,000 (about $1,200) could be reviewed.

“The 20,000 cedis ceiling is something we can look at again through dialogue,” he said.

On the economy, Mr Kwetey attributed the relative stability of the cedi to the new gold board initiative, which he said has brought in substantial foreign exchange revenue.

“This comes from our gold board initiative, which regulates gold exports and has brought in $2.6 billion within four months—far more than we’ve seen from cocoa syndications or similar past inflows,” he said.

Mr Kwetey also addressed concerns raised about the “Jumra” job creation programme, particularly suggestions that it could become a vehicle for corruption.

He insisted the initiative marks a shift from past policies that focused on handing out state funds.

“Our manifesto is built around a national apprenticeship programme. We’re not giving away cash like before,” he said.

“This is about helping people in the informal sector—80 per cent of the workforce—with the logistics and tools they need to grow their businesses.”

He dismissed claims by the NPP that the NDC is plotting to remove the Chief Justice, describing such accusations as signs of panic. According to him, any process currently under discussion is being pursued within the bounds of the Constitution.

Looking ahead to the 2028 general election, when the NDC will present a new presidential candidate for the first time since 2012, Mr Kwetey said he was confident in the party’s ability to manage the transition.

“Success in government and unity within the party will make that transition easier,” he said. “I believe Ghana is destined for better days, and the NDC remains the vehicle to get us there.”

When asked whether he would consider contesting for the presidential slot, Mr Kwetey said the decision ultimately lies with the party’s delegates.

“What matters is what NDC members want, not my personal ambition,” he said. “If they choose me, I’ll serve. If not, I will support whoever they choose.”

Male artistes are hungry and suffering – Afia Schwarzenegger defends Kofi Mole against drug accusations

Ghanaian socialite Afia Schwarzenegger Ghanaian socialite Afia Schwarzenegger

Ghanaian socialite Afia Schwarzenegger has fired back at critics accusing musician Kofi Mole of drug abuse.

She has urged the public to be more empathetic toward male artistes who, according to her, are struggling due to lack of sponsorship.

This comes after a recent video of Kofi Mole went viral on social media, with some netizens commenting negatively on his appearance, stating that it had “deteriorated” due to alleged drug use.

In response to this, Afia Schwarzenegger has argued that unlike their female counterparts, male musicians often lack financial backing and face intense challenges in the industry.

“You know I heard people saying Kofi Mole is doing drugs and I want to ask when was the last time Kofi gave us a hit song? Are you people sponsoring him because these male musicians suffer. If you are a celebrity and you don’t sleep with this politician you will suffer,” she said.

Drawing from her experience in the industry, Afia further alleged that some wealthy individuals exploit upcoming artistes under the guise of offering support.

“We have been in the industry for quite some time now and these rich people are fond of sleeping with these upcoming artistes. Some are even praying that the female musicians from wealthy families should lose their mothers so they can sleep with them all in the name of help,” she stated.

Afia emphasisd that the challenges faced by male artistes in Ghana are often overlooked, and harsh public criticism only makes it worse.

The boys are hungry and suffering. We have some people who call themselves a table of men and if you don’t succumb to their stupidity you would be hungry.

The entertainment industry in Ghana has collapsed. “If you are a male artiste you have to through the struggle 70 times what the female artistes are going through,” she added.

Ntim Fordjour demands retraction and apology from The Herald over defamatory publication

0

Member of Parliament for Assin South, Reverend John Ntim Fordjour Member of Parliament for Assin South, Reverend John Ntim Fordjour

The Member of Parliament for Assin South, Reverend John Ntim Fordjour has demanded an immediate retraction and an unqualified apology from The Herald newspaper over a front-page story published in its May 12, 2025, edition, which he claims is defamatory and baseless.

In a letter dated May 12, 2025, from his legal representatives, JKORANTENG@Law, addressed to The Herald’s Managing Editor, Larry-Alans Dogbey, Ntim Fordjour described the publication, headlined “Ntim Fordjour Dragged Before Police CID Over GH¢600,000.00 Contract Fraud,” as wholly untrue.

The letter stated that the allegations lack any factual basis and that the newspaper failed to contact the MP to verify the story before publication.

Ntim Fordjour, a reverend minister, former Deputy Minister of Education, and sitting MP, denied any dealings with the businessman named in the article – Sylvester Agyen, or receiving any funds as alleged.

“Our client instructs us that you neglected, failed and /or refused to reach out to him to confirm the veracity of the story before going to press. You have, by your actions, caused right thinking members of the society to think of him as a fraudulent person when no such situation exists. Please note that our client has had no dealings with the said businessman named in your publication, whether in private or in the conduct of his public duty.

“We are instructed to inform you that our client has not received any money from any person, including the said Sylvester Agyen, either directly or indirectly, or through anyone for the purpose stated in the impugned publication,” the letter said.

The letter accused the newspaper of unprofessional conduct, asserting that the story was an attempt to smear Ntim Fordjour’s reputation and distract him from addressing matters of national interest.

The MP’s lawyers demanded that the publication is retracted with the same prominence as the original story and issue an apology within 72 hours of receipt of the letter, failing which legal action would be pursued to vindicate Fordjour’s rights.

The letter emphasised Ntim Fordjour’s scandalisation by the publication, noting its potential to damage his reputation among “right-thinking members of society.”
