Funding gap hits agric sector

0

Despite a significant boost in funding to the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies through the District Assemblies Common Fund, the agriculture sector— a key driver of the economy and employing over 50 per cent of the population—has been neglected, with no direct allocation from the GH¢987.96 million first-quarter 2025 disbursement, a Graphic Business analysis has found.

This means that agricultural initiatives such as the Ghana Commercial Agriculture Project are helping smallholder farms increase their productivity, and the Savannah Agricultural Value Chain Development Programme, which is working to expand the production of key crops like maize, soybean, and rice, will face challenges.

Additionally, the Inland Valley Rice Development Project, which focuses on developing rice production in inland valleys, providing infrastructure support and improved inputs, and the Youth in Agriculture Programme, which is designed to attract the youth into agriculture, will also be hard hit due to low funding.

This is because the disbursements to the MMDAs were allocated to specific projects. The projects include: 25 per cent for model markets, 10 per cent each for health infrastructure, educational infrastructure, school furniture, and water and sanitation projects, plus 20 per cent for completing abandoned legacy projects.

This represents a notable improvement from 2017-2024, when only 40-50 per cent of DACF allocations reached the assemblies, leaving local governments under-resourced.

Funding gap

The funding gap has prompted urgent calls for policy reform, with experts warning that systematic underfunding of agriculture at the local level jeopardises Ghana’s food security and rural development goals.

An agribusiness and investment strategist, Raymond Denteh, told the Graphic Business that the District Assemblies Common Fund’s lack of direct funding for agriculture was a significant misalignment between national development goals and local government planning in a country where over half the population depends on farming.

He said the district-level Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA) offices remained severely under-resourced, with extension officers lacking basic tools, mobility and digital infrastructure, while they maintained unacceptably high officer-to-farmer ratios that limited their effectiveness.

Key recommendations

He explained that the lack of DACF allocation to agriculture could hinder its growth at the local level in Ghana. However, he stated that district assemblies should adopt several innovative and strategic approaches to maintain service delivery and promote local economic development.

Mr Denteh made several key recommendations, including diversifying and strengthening Internally Generated Funds (IGF) by improving collection systems for property rates, market tolls, and business permits through digitisation, with a portion allocated explicitly for agricultural development and extension services.

He further advocated the establishment of agricultural land banks in collaboration with traditional authorities to attract investors and facilitate land access for youth and agripreneurs, while leveraging strategic partnerships with Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), and donor-funded projects for co-financing opportunities.

Furthermore, he suggested expanding support for Village Savings and Loans Associations (VSLAs) via Social Welfare and Community Development departments to enhance grassroots financial inclusion and serve as platforms for microenterprise growth, especially benefiting women and youth in rural areas.

Efficient resource utilisation

Meanwhile, in a separate interview, the former General Secretary of the General Agricultural Workers Union (GAWU) argued that effectively using allocated resources was more important for transforming Ghana’s agricultural sector than a significant budget increase.

“While it is desirable to allocate more resources to agriculture, we must remember that the key to advancing agriculture is ensuring the efficient use of resources within the sector,” he stated.

He cited the Planting for Food and Jobs programme as an example, explaining that although over GH¢5 billion had been invested, the country had little to show for it due to the imprudent use of resources.

He identified significant weaknesses in the implementation of agricultural policies that needed to be addressed to ensure the success of new initiatives.

He said allocated funds in the budget were often not fully disbursed at the end of the day, creating a gap between planned and actual spending. He said that where disbursements were made, the money did not always reach the target beneficiaries, with funds sometimes diverted for other purposes or inputs smuggled out of the country.

Additionally, he said that even when resources reached farmers, there was no guarantee they would be used as intended, with some farmers selling fertilisers meant for their farms or using less than the recommended quantities.

“You need to trace the value chain of the supply to ensure that at every stage, the things are properly done the way you want it to be done,” he advised, stressing the critical role of agriculture in the country’s economic development, particularly in light of the government’s 24-hour economy policy.

“Agriculture is the mainstay of the economy. It produces food for us to feed on. It also produces the raw materials for most of our industries,” he stated, adding that the 24-hour economy, which seeks to increase manufacturing and productivity, would require raw materials that must come from the agricultural sector.

“I would strongly suggest that we should get agriculture to get back to its glory days, to serve as the foundation to produce enough foodstuff for this country and, at the same time, raw materials for our industries,” he said.

Oseikrom Sikani vows to get student dismissed over ‘theft’

Oseikrom Sikani vows to take action against a student for snatching money meant for all students Oseikrom Sikani vows to take action against a student for snatching money meant for all students

Popular Ghanaian musician Oseikrom Sikani has vowed to take disciplinary action against a student of Kumasi High School for allegedly snatching money that was meant to be shared among the entire student body.

In a video shared by content creator Kwadwo Sheldon on his Instagram page on June 30, 2025, the musician stated that he would report the student to school authorities if he did not come forward and admit to the act.

According to Sikani, the incident occurred during a visit to the school, where he intended to distribute money to the students.

However, one student reportedly took the money for himself.

Meanwhile, other students who were present at the scene have pleaded with the musician to let the issue go and not report the student to the school’s administration.

As of now, there has been no official response from either the school or the student involved.

Parliament okays $360 million World Bank support for 2025 budget

0

A $360 million financing deal for the Second Resilient Recovery Development Policy Financing between the government and the World Bank’s International Development Association (IDA) has been approved by parliament.

On Tuesday, Thomas Nyarko Ampem, the deputy finance minister, gave the House a tour of the facility.

Enhancing the standard of living for citizens, boosting economic growth, maintaining macroeconomic stability, reducing inflation, and reviving economic growth are the objectives of the funding.

During deliberations, the Minority expressed objection to the facility, but the Finance Committee recommended approval.

Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, the ranking member of the Committee on Economy and Development, charged that the administration was hiding what he described as a loan deal behind words.

The Finance Committee’s recommendation to adopt its report on the funding arrangement was followed by the approval.

I was forced out of CalBank but I hold no grudge

Frank Adu Jnr is a former Chief Executive Officer of CalBank Frank Adu Jnr is a former Chief Executive Officer of CalBank

Former Chief Executive Officer of CalBank, Frank Adu Jnr, has disclosed that his exit from the bank was not voluntary but the result of an administrative decision by the Bank of Ghana.

Speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express on Monday, June 30, 2025, he revealed that his contract had not yet expired when the decision was made.

“You mean my forced retirement from CalBank? Well, I say forced because I had a contract which hadn’t expired, and the Bank of Ghana Governor thought that he would use this administrative decision to cause me to take early retirement,” he said.

He emphasised that he harbours no resentment over how his nearly two-decade tenure ended.

“I bless him for it because I think I’ve profited from that,” he added.

Frank Adu clarified that his concerns were with the administrative process, not with any individuals often blamed for changes within the financial sector.

He said he could have legally challenged the Bank of Ghana’s decision to end his tenure, as it violated an active contract.

Although urged by influential figures to take legal action, he chose not to pursue the matter.

He explained that his retirement plan was always flexible, and stepping down at 57 was close to his original goal of retiring at 55.

He expressed no regrets and said he feels at peace, viewing early retirement as a blessing that freed him from the stress of handling bad loans and regulatory demands.

His comments come amid ongoing discussions about regulatory interventions and leadership changes in Ghana’s banking industry.

Pan-African Progressive Front ushers new era for African unity

0

The Pan-African Progressive Front (PPF) has chalked up a significant milestone with the official inauguration of its headquarters in Accra, marking what the organisers describe as a turning point in the ongoing struggle for African unity and self-determination.

The historic launch on Monday, June 30, 2025, drew a strong presence of dignitaries, activists, intellectuals, and cultural figures to celebrate a movement grounded in the legacy of Pan-Africanism and committed to shaping Africa’s future.

Speaking at the ceremony, a former presidential advisor and member of the PPF International Organising Committee, Dr. Eric George Alexander Don-Arthur, described the memorable opening of the PPF headquarters as a monumental step forward for the Pan-African cause.

He expressed pride in Ghana’s role as the host of the new secretariat and called it a timely boost to the continent’s collective ambitions.

“Today marks a significant milestone in our journey toward promoting Pan-Africanism, unity, and progress across the length and breadth of our continent. We are reminded of the rich history and legacy of Pan-Africanism. From the early pioneers who fought for independence and self-determination to the modern-day champions of African unity, we stand on the shoulders of these giants.”

Dr. Don-Arthur also announced that Accra will host a major international conference in October to mark the 80th anniversary of the Fifth Pan-African Congress.

Held in Manchester in 1945, the famous Congress was a defining moment in Africa’s liberation history. It brought together influential figures including Kwame Nkrumah, George Padmore, W.E.B. Du Bois, Jomo Kenyatta, and Hastings Banda, whose advocacy and activism sparked a wave of independence movements across Africa.

“This year’s commemoration is not just about remembering the past,” Dr. Don-Arthur noted. “It is about rekindling the fire of freedom and working toward total unification, economic emancipation, and rapid development. The October event will be a rallying point for all progressive voices in Africa and the diaspora.”

Adding his voice to the passionate plea was a former presidential candidate in Ghana, Dr. Abu Sakara, who called on African leaders and citizens alike to renew their commitment to a united, self-reliant continent.

He urged attendees to work diligently to realise the African dream and emphasised that true liberation would only be achieved when Africans take full ownership of their natural wealth and chart their own course.

“We are committed to working hard to realise this dream. Our focus is on social justice, cultural pride, and building a stronger, more prosperous Africa. We want a continent where every individual can thrive using our vast resources to benefit our people. Pan-Africanism remains at the heart of our collective fight for liberation and self-determination.”

Veteran journalist and former Minister for Information in Ghana, Fritz Baffour, in another solidarity message, said the struggles of many African migrants attempting perilous journeys across deserts and seas should serve as a wake-up call. For him, this desperation is a tragic symbol of lost hope, contrasting sharply with the optimism of the early post-independence period.

“In 1945, we believed Africa was on a winning path. But the steady retreat of progressive thinking and the influence of external forces have challenged that optimism. It is good that we now have an organisation like the PPF because the seeds of this struggle were planted right here in Ghana. We must answer the question of who we are. We have to find pride in our identity and use that understanding to build a better future.”

He concluded with a call to action for the younger generation to engage with the ideals of the movement and step forward in building the dream of African unity and greatness.

In his keynote address, the Paramount Chief of the Essikado Traditional Area, Nana Kobina Nketsia V, urged leaders and citizens to foster inclusiveness and a communal spirit.

He spoke passionately about the need for authenticity, humility, and conscious leadership in African governance.

“It is not African to drive big cars and carry grand titles while the man on the street is suffering. Let us share in the pain of others. We must question everything we are told. Do not accept things blindly. Be aware, be conscious, and lead with compassion. That is what true African leadership looks like,” Nana Nketsia added.

Following his captivating presentation, Nana Nketsia led the dignitaries present to cut the tape to officially open the magnificent PPF headquarters located at Ringway Estates in Accra.

The impressive ceremony, which was moderated by veteran journalist Kwesi Pratt, who doubles as a member of the PPF Planning Committee, was interspersed with thought-provoking poetry recitation by Oswald Okantey.

The PPF is a platform for the promotion of the Pan-African agenda as determined by the Fifth Pan-African Congress in Manchester in 1945.

It is also aimed at uniting anti-imperialist forces, including political parties, organised labour, youth and student groups, women’s movements, cultural organisations, and environmental groups on the African continent.

As part of efforts to unite Africa, the PPF organised an online forum among key Pan-African organisations on June 17, 2025, where participants resolved to petition the African Union (AU) to demand real compensation from Western countries for their colonial legacy in Africa.

Mahamudu Bawumia Commands 56% in NPP Flagbearer Poll, Leaves Ken Agyapong Trailing

0

Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has emerged as the frontrunner in the race to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP) into the 2028 general elections, according to a new poll by Global Info Analytics.

According to a report by Ghana Web, the poll, which surveyed the preferences of party supporters and potential delegates, found that 56% back Dr. Bawumia as their top choice for the NPP’s presidential candidacy.

This strong lead positions him well ahead of his closest rival, Kennedy Agyapong.

Kennedy Agyapong, the former Member of Parliament for Assin Central, garnered support from 23% of respondents.

He has already announced his intention to contest the party’s flagbearership, maintaining a visible presence within party circles.

Trailing in third place is Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, the former Minister for Education, with 9% of respondents backing his candidacy.

Though not as prominent in public discourse as the top two contenders, his inclusion suggests a base of support within the party’s ranks.

In fourth place is Dr. Patrick Yaw Boamah, the Member of Parliament for Okaikoi Central, who secured 4% of the votes despite not formally declaring his intention to contest.

His presence in the poll indicates a growing recognition among party members.

Dr. Bryan Acheampong, MP for Abetifi and former Minister for Food and Agriculture, received 3% support, placing fifth among the listed contenders.

The poll results shows a clear advantage for Dr. Bawumia, though the contest remains dynamic with other figures likely to intensify their campaigns in the coming months.

COVID-19: 107 out of 316 suspected cases confirmed, no deaths

0

Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has confirmed a recent rise in COVID-19 cases, attributing the majority of infections to an outbreak on the University of Ghana campus.

Addressing Parliament on Tuesday, July 1, the Minister said 107 cases had been confirmed out of 316 suspected samples, with the Omicron variant identified as the primary driver of the surge.

“As of now, 316 suspected cases, 107 of those cases have been confirmed as COVID-19. Fortunately, no hospitalisations and no deaths,” he told lawmakers.

Mr. Akandoh explained that the outbreak is currently limited to the university community and has not spread significantly to other parts of Accra or the country.

He linked the rise in infections to recent Hall Week celebrations on the Legon campus, where large crowds gathered with minimal adherence to COVID-19 safety protocols.

“Mr. Speaker, after sending in a team to investigate, we found a few key issues that fuelled the spread. The most significant factor was the recent Hall Week celebrations held at the University. These events brought large crowds together, with little use of face masks or distancing,” he noted.

In response, the Ministry of Health has deployed a national response team to work closely with university and municipal health officials. The Minister said meetings were also held with the Director-General of the Ghana Health Service, heads of the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research, and the School of Public Health.

As part of the containment measures, all future hall week activities on campus have been suspended. Additionally, nationwide alerts have been sent to health facilities to remain vigilant.

A campus-wide public education campaign has also been rolled out using posters, student leadership platforms, and university radio stations to reinforce adherence to public health protocols.

The Minister urged the general public to remain cautious and continue observing preventive measures such as proper hand hygiene, wearing face masks in crowded areas, and getting vaccinated, especially those who are due for booster shots.

“Avoid gathering if you are sick,” he advised.

Even the office of the President is not above the law – Mahama

0

President John Dramani Mahama has made a call to all Ghanaians to hold those in authority, including himself, accountable.

According to John Mahama, even the office of the President, which by the grace of God he now holds, is not above the law.

Speaking at the National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving on Tuesday, July 1, President Mahama stated, “Let us remain vigilant against the voices of tribalism, the voices of religious extremism and against the poison of political division.

2 policy think tanks call for full disclosure on tariff increment

0

Two policy think tanks have called for full public disclosure of the data and methodology used in determining the tariff rates by the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC).

The two noted that the recent 2.43 per cent tariffs increments announced by the commission and scheduled to start today was outrageous.

In a statement, jointly signed by West Africa Regional Director of CUTS International and Benjamin Nsiah, Executive Director of CEMSE, the civil society organisations (CSOs) and copied to The Ghanaian Times, stated that the tariff adjustment violates Section 3(c) of the PURC Act 538 of 1997, which mandates fairness in electricity pricing to benefit government, producers, and consumers alike.

The CSOs argued that consumers had anticipated a reduction in electricity tariffs due to the cedi’s significant appreciation against the dollar and declining inflation both critical indicators used in determining electricity pricing.

They explained that the cedi appreciated by over 30 per cent between the first and second quarters of the year, moving from GH¢15.70 to GH¢10.31 per dollar.

This, they emphasised, translated into overpayments by end-users and generated approximately GH¢1 billion in windfall revenues for the government and distribution companies, which could have been used to clear arrears or finance emergency power supply, rendering the new tariff increase unjustifiable.

They further criticised the PURC for relying on a miscalculated inflation rate of 20.67 per cent, instead of the current rate of 18.4per cent.

The CSOs also argued that the minor increase in gas prices by 1 per cent or $0.08 had a negligible impact on overall cost and could not reasonably support the tariff hike.

The CSOs questioned why the PURC cited a GH¢488 million deficit without accounting for the earlier windfall from currency gains.

Ashie Moore responds to Kwaku Azar’s allegations, urges calm and respect for legal process

0

The Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the ruling National Democratic Congress, Mr Emmanuel Nii Ashie Moore, has issued a detailed rejoinder refuting recent allegations allegedly made against him by legal scholar Professor Kwaku Asare (Kwaku Azar).

The statement, released through his legal counsel, addresses claims of misconduct, extortion, and political abuse in connection with an ongoing criminal case involving Singaporean national Mr Toh You Kang.

Mr Moore denies all accusations, insists the matter is being handled lawfully by Ghana’s legal institutions, and calls on the public to remain calm and allow due process to run its course.

Read the full rejoinder below.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Date: 1st July 2025

Accra – Ghana

RE: RESPONSE TO PROF. KWEKU AZAR ALLEGATIONS AGAINST MR. EMMANUEL NII ASHIE MOORE — CALL FOR CALM AND RESPECT FOR LEGAL PROCESS.

The attention of Mr. Emmanuel Nii Ashie Moore and his legal team has been drawn to a series of unfounded allegations circulating in sections of the media and public discourse, purporting to suggest misconduct, extortion, political abuse of state institutions, and human rights violations in connection with an ongoing criminal matter involving Mr. Toh You Kang, a Singaporean national.

We wish to unequivocally state the following:

1. Background to the Matter.- RCID/AR CASE R/O NO: 222/2025

In May 2025, Mr. Emmanuel Nii Ashie Moore lodged a formal complaint with the Greater Accra Regional Command of the Ghana Police Service against Mr. Toh You Kang, citing defrauding by false pretence. Following preliminary investigations, Mr. Kang was remanded in lawful custody and has remained on remand for the past five weeks.

Subsequently, a related complaint of stealing was filed with the Economic and Commercial Crime Office. Owing to the complexity and magnitude of the alleged fraud totaling over USD 5.8 million both dockets were recommended for consolidation and referred to the Attorney General’s Department for legal advice and prosecutorial determination.

This process was carried out in accordance with the laws of Ghana, devoid of interference or political influence.

2. Response to Key Allegations

a. No Receipt of USD 800,000 for ECG Contracts:

Mr. Moore never received $800,000 from Mr. Toh You Kang for purposes of securing contracts from the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG). Rather, Mr. Kang misrepresented himself as a legitimate investor and defrauded Mr. Moore and his business partners.

b. No Coercion for Political Contributions:

Allegations that Mr. Moore solicited funds from Mr. Kang for political purposes, particularly in connection with the 2024 NDC campaign, are patently false. Fundraising efforts for the campaign were conducted transparently by ‘Monitor and Win’ committee to boost grassroots participation and reward hardworking party members.

c. No False Invitation or Assault:

Mr. Kang is a regular visitor to Ghana and was lawfully arrested based on the criminal complaint. There is no evidence of assault, extortion, or coercion during or after his arrest.

d. Legal Representation and Human Rights:

At all times, Mr. Kang has had access to multiple lawyers, has not been denied communication with family (and with his Mobile phone whilst in Police custody), and has been treated in full compliance with Ghanaian law and human rights standards.

e. False Image Circulation Claims:

Accusations that Mr. Moore circulated semi-nude images of Mr. Kang to extort his family are entirely false, malicious, and defamatory. Mr. Kang has been in lawful police custody throughout.

3. Institutional Integrity and the Rule of Law

As a senior political figure and respected entrepreneur, Mr. Emmanuel Nii Ashie Moore has demonstrated unwavering trust in Ghana’s legal institutions by submitting himself to due process and refraining from any self-help or political manipulation. He believes firmly that justice must be served through independent, lawful, and transparent mechanisms.

Ghana’s law enforcement agencies, including the Police and the Economic and Commercial Crime Office (CID), have handled this matter with professionalism, neutrality, and respect for legal thresholds. The Attorney General’s Department, the constitutionally mandated authority, now has carriage of the matter, and we await their considered advice and direction.

4. Political Neutrality and Investment Climate

Mr. Moore (a successful entrepreneur and politician) remains committed to safeguarding Ghana’s reputation as a safe and welcoming destination for genuine foreign investment. However, our institutions must not be used as sanctuaries for individuals who exploit diplomatic, commercial, or political goodwill to perpetrate financial crimes.

Allegations of political interference or state abuse serve only to undermine public confidence in our democracy and institutions, and we urge the public to treat such narratives with the skepticism they deserve.

5. Call for Calm and Due Process

No individual is above the law, and equally, no individual should be vilified or defamed without evidence. The matter involving Mr. Toh You Kang is now within the lawful domain of the Attorney General’s Department, and we call on all well-meaning Ghanaians to respect the process and refrain from politicizing what is clearly a commercial and criminal dispute.

 6. Conclusion

We reiterate that, in Ghana, no individual is above the law, nor is any person beneath its protection. As officers of the court and custodians of our democracy, we urge the public and the media to uphold the sanctity of due process, resist sensationalism, and allow justice to take its natural course.

Let truth prevail, and let the institutions of our Republic function without interference or distortion.

We remain confident that justice will be served.

***

Signed,

Gideon Tettey Tetteh, Esq.

Legal Counsel to Mr. Emmanuel Nii Ashie Moore

Ghanaian Telcos fully implement increased data bundles from July 1 as promised

0

Telecommunication companies in Ghana have begun rolling out increased data allocations following a government directive aimed at improving internet affordability.

 • Telecommunication companies in Ghana have introduced increased data allocations following a government policy.
 • The initiative, effective from 1 July 2025, offers an additional 10%-15% data at no extra cost to consumers.
 • The policy aims to tackle public concerns over high data prices and enhance digital inclusion.

The initiative, championed by the Ministry of Communications and Digitalisation, comes in response to growing public dissatisfaction with high data prices and poor value for money. The Ministry said the adjustment is part of broader efforts to expand digital inclusion and reduce financial strain on consumers.

According to the implementation details:

 • MTN has increased data volumes by 15% across all packages.
 • Telecel and AT have each implemented a 10% increase in their bundle allocations.

High-value data plans have seen the most noticeable enhancements:

 • AT’s GHC400 bundle now offers 236GB, up from 195GB.
 • Telecel’s GHC400 package has surged to 250GB, up from 90GB.
 • MTN has reintroduced its GHC399 plan, now delivering 214GB, up from 92.88GB under the former GHC350 plan.

Minister for Communications and Digitalisation, Sam George, has tasked the National Communications Authority (NCA) with ensuring full compliance by all telecom providers. He cautioned that telcos failing to comply would face regulatory sanctions.

“This is about fairness and inclusion. Every Ghanaian deserves affordable access to digital services,” Minister George stated.

Telecom operators began informing subscribers of the updated bundle offerings via SMS and app notifications ahead of the official launch. The move has received praise from consumer rights and digital advocacy organisations, who have welcomed the shift as a step toward a more consumer-friendly telecom sector.

Even if I don’t make it to heaven, I’m okay after hugging President Mahama

Agraada met President Mahama at National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving Agraada met President Mahama at National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving

Evangelist Patricia Asiedua, popularly known as Agradaa, has stated that hugging President John Dramani Mahama at the National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving was so fulfilling that even if she doesn’t make it to heaven, she feels content.

The prayer event, held on July 1, 2025, drew thousands of Christians, religious leaders, and other members of the public from across Ghana. It was held under the theme, “Reset, Reflect, and Renew for National Prosperity.”

The event aimed to bring people together to pray for the peace, growth, and future of the country.

Among those who attended was Agradaa, who appeared deeply moved by both the message of the event and her interaction with the former President.

Speaking to the media after the event, she said she was happy and honoured to be part of the national gathering.

She praised Mahama for what she described as a “remarkable and godly initiative,” explaining that in times like these, it is important for the country to pause, reflect, and pray together.

According to her, the former President had demonstrated true leadership by organising such an event that focused on seeking God’s guidance for the nation.

“I’m really excited to be here, especially because I got to see the President in person. What he has done is beautiful. It shows he has a vision for the country and cares about where Ghana is heading. I even had the chance to hug him today, and honestly, even if I don’t make it to heaven, I feel fulfilled,” she said.

Ghanaian businessman involved in romance scam extradited to US by FBI

Dada Joe Remix (In orange shirt) has been extradited to the US Dada Joe Remix (In orange shirt) has been extradited to the US

Ghanaian businessman Joseph Badu Boateng, popularly known as Dada Joe Remix, has been extradited to the United States for his alleged involvement in a romance fraud scheme estimated at over $100 million.

His extradition follows close collaboration between the U.S. Diplomatic Security Service (DSS), the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and Ghanaian law enforcement authorities.

Boateng is accused of orchestrating a sophisticated fraud ring that exploited victims, primarily U.S. citizens, through romance and inheritance scams.

According to U.S. prosecutors, he and his network used fake online profiles, often posing as potential romantic partners, to manipulate victims into sending large sums of money under false pretenses, including fabricated inheritance claims and financial emergencies.

After months of investigations and cross-border coordination, Ghanaian authorities arrested Boateng and others and then facilitated his extradition to the United States, where he will now face trial.

Romance fraud is a growing global cybercrime tactic in which scammers exploit emotional vulnerability, often leading victims to financial ruin.

U.S. officials have occassionally expressed concern over the increasing use of West Africa-based networks in such operations, prompting deeper international cooperation to combat the crime.

Joseph Badu Boateng is now expected to stand trial in the US.

Background

Dada Joe Remix was arrested in Ghana on May 28, 2025, following a formal extradition request from the U.S. government.

According to court documents, the FBI alleges that between 2013 and March 2023, Boateng and his associates defrauded elderly Americans by promising them access to non-existent gold and jewelry, while demanding fictitious fees and taxes to facilitate their release.

A grand jury indictment, unsealed on May 30, 2025, in the U.S. District Court for the District of Arizona, charges Boateng with conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering.

Ghanaian authorities, citing their obligations under the Extradition Act of 1960, worked closely with U.S. diplomatic and law enforcement officials in a covert operation.

Boateng will now face prosecution in a federal court in Arizona. If convicted, he could face substantial prison time.

The Long Bob Is Summer’s It-Girl Cut—And Hair Experts Say The Style Works for Nearly All Face Shapes

0

Introducing Your New Summer Style: The Lob Steve Granitz – Getty Images

Unless you’ve been living on planet Mars for the past century, you would have heard of the bob haircut. You know, the chin-length ‘do that celebs like Lily Collins are best known for sporting—oh, and the one that’s been around since the 1900s with many an iteration. We’ve seen everything from the bottleneck bob to the French bob, but one style that’s, arguably, less intimidating than the super short cut and more wearable is the long bob—aka, the lob.

But what defines a long bob? And what face shapes are best suited to the style? Well, we consulted professional hairstylist Jordanna Cobella, who shared her expertise on everything to know about the lob. Keep reading for your most asked questions, answered!

What is a long bob?

A long bob or lob is, as expected, longer than a traditional bob; specifically, it falls between the chin and shoulder, and, as Jordanna says, “offers a more versatile and softer alternative to traditional short bobs.”

Continuing, Jordanna says: “It can be worn blunt with a sharp edge (no layers) and almost all one length for a striking finish. That or it can be cut, feathered, and textured, with shattered layers for a more effortless finish with movement.”

What face shapes does a long bob work for?

Firstly, whatever hairstyle you want, you should get; at Cosmo we don’t like subscribing to the idea that you’ve got to have a certain look just because you have a specific face shape or hair type. That said, the beauty of a long bob is that it works for nearly all face shapes, so we’re all winners here!

If you have a round face, Jordanna says that the lob “can elongate your features, making it appear more oval.

“For those with square faces, soft layers around the face soften angular features. And if you have an oval face, you’re lucky because you can rock a lob in almost any form.”

And the same goes for texture and hair type, too. If you’ve got thicker, curlier hair and want to lift off some weight, opt for a layered bob, whereas if you have thinner locks, a blunter cut will add the illusion of fuller strands.

What to ask your hairdresser for when getting a long bob

As Jordanna tells us, whenever going to the hairdressers for a new look, you should be super clear about the length you want; this is the pièce de résistance, so it’s got to be right! So, come prepared with inspiration pics galore—like the ones in this article… wink, nudge.

“Visually show your hairdresser where you want the bob to sit when it’s dry (hair shrinks when dry, so this will not match the length when it’s wet). Ask your stylist to leave enough length so you can wear it straight, curled, or wavy, so it’s versatile,” explains Jordanna.

You can also ask for a more modern, asymmetrical take on the lob if you’re after something a little different. This style is defined by an uneven length, often with the back being shorter than the front, as Margot Robbie so perfectly demonstrates below.

Long bob styling tips

Low-maintenance girlies, listen up because Jordanna says that a long bob is all about effortless styling. Hallelujah!

“You can keep it sleek and straight for a polished look, or add some waves and lived-in kinks for that beachy vibe,” she says. For more volume, try a root-lifting spray and scrunch it with your fingers. You can also create a slightly tousled, lived-in texture with a salt spray, scrunch, and diffuser.

[/iframe][composite id=’00261b3b-0645-4459-a170-84b24dc74eca’ mediaId=’6b553f15-1a70-47b2-8f82-e98c70035193′ size=”medium”]

Above all, a long bob is the perfect style for those looking for a healthy-looking yet stress-free style. Your grown-out bob just got a little more intentional!

Majority Leader challenges NPP to pick a female running-mate for 2028 general elections

0

By Godwill Arthur- Mensah

Accra, July 01, GNA-The Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga, has asked the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) to fill the Party’s running-mate position with a female candidate to demonstrate its commitment to gender empowerment.

Mr Ayariga, also the Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, said the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) had already shown the way by appointing Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang as its running-mate and subsequently elected as Ghana’s first female Vice President, a historic feat in Ghanaian politics.

“We, the NDC, can only go forward…,” he said amid cheers on the floor of Parliament on Tuesday when responding to the Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin’s comments that President Mahama was not committed to gender equity.

Mr Ayariga dismissed some allegations made by the Minority Leader to the effect that only few women were appointed into ministerial positions in the Mahama-led Government.

The Majority Leader asked the NPP to allow female candidates to go unopposed in constituencies considered “safe seats” in their strongholds, especially in the Ashanti region, whilst the NDC did same in the Volta region.

In that way, he believed, there would be sufficient women legislators in Parliament to enable the President to choose his ministers from at any point in time.

” Now, the Minority Leader has suddenly become a gender champion when as a Majority Leader in government, he could not protect his female MPs’ seats in the last elections and lost most of them….”dzi wo fie asem” to wit, “focus on your internal issues,” triggering another lighthearted cheers from both side of the aisle.

Earlier,  the Minority Leader, Afenyo-Markin, stated that President Mahama had failed to fulfill his election promise to appoint 30 per cent of females into his Cabinet.

“We have women MPs in the majority side of the House who have the requisite credentials to be ministers but they have been relegated to the background,” Mr Afenyo-Markin stated.

The MP for Effutu alleged that only 28 women were appointed by the President as mayors and Chief Executives of the metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies.

AMOSA 2001 launches 25th anniversary and legacy ICT lab project

0

The 2001 Year Group of the Aggrey Memorial Old Students Association (AMOSA) on Friday, June 27, officially launched its 25th Anniversary celebrations with a ceremony at the Erata Hotel in East Legon, Accra.

The milestone event also marked the unveiling of the group’s ambitious Legacy Project — the development and resourcing of a state-of-the-art ICT Lab and Resource Centre for their alma mater, Aggrey Memorial A.M.E Zion Senior High School.

The ceremony was chaired by Ing. Mrs. Rita Ohene Sarfoh, Director of Engineering at the Ministry of Roads and Highways. She also served as moderator and mother of the occasion, guiding the programme with a mix of warmth and professionalism.

She was supported by Mrs. Vivian Fiscian, a renowned development practitioner and child welfare advocate, who lent her voice to the evening with insights on the importance of education, technology, and alumni involvement in national development.

Also present were the Headmistress of Aggrey Memorial A.M.E Zion Senior High School and the President of AMOSA Global, Dr. Benjamin Otchere-Ankrah, whose presence underscored the unity and shared commitment to the school’s advancement.

In his welcome address, Mr. Joseph Baffoe, President of the AMOSA 2001 Year Group, extended warm appreciation to all present. He passionately outlined the urgent need to support the school, noting the high student population and the insufficient ICT infrastructure.
He emphasised that the Legacy Project, aimed at delivering a modern ICT centre equipped with adequate computers, high-speed internet, a server, a projector, and full civil works, was a timely response to the evolving educational needs of students. The ICT project is estimated at GHc954,000.

In her response, Ing. Mrs. Ohene Sarfoh expressed her delight at being part of the initiative and pledged her unwavering support until the project is completed. She lauded the year group for their foresight and unity. Mrs. Vivian Fiscian, on her part, emphasised the importance of rebranding the school and positioning it to better serve future generations.

The fundraising segment of the event was led by Mr. Yoofi Brew, an accomplished media and creative professional, whose energy and charm moved many to contribute generously toward the cause.

Several guests made immediate donations and pledges, marking a strong start to the group’s fundraising efforts.

The night ended on a high note with balloons released, symbolising the dawn of a new era of impact, legacy, and renewed purpose for AMOSA 2001.
As the year group looks ahead to the successful execution of the Legacy Project, the energy and commitment witnessed on the launch night served as a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when old students come together for a worthy cause.

Amaarae’s talent is insane; people are finally noticing it – Kuami Eugene

Kuami Eugene is a Ghanaian musician

Ghanaian musician Kuami Eugene has described Amaarae as a legend whose talent is only now receiving the mainstream recognition it truly deserves.

In an interview with Doreen Avio, Kuami Eugene said Amaarae has always had a unique and consistent sound, even though her music didn’t initially appeal to the wider Ghanaian audience.

“Amaarae is my big sister. She’s a legend, though. But the funny thing is, it has never been quiet with Amaarae. It’s just her circle… That’s where she finds herself,” he said.

He explained that Amaarae’s music has always leaned towards the alternative side of the spectrum, which may not have resonated immediately with mainstream Ghanaian listeners who are more accustomed to Afrobeat, highlife, and hiplife sounds.

“The people she used to appeal to are not the regular Ghanaian masses. She’s been making waves since. It’s just quite sad that people are now getting to know Amaarae. But I’m excited they’re getting to know Amaarae now because the talent she has is insane,” Kuami Eugene added.

Amaarae, known for her genre-defying style and growing global appeal, has gained significant international attention in recent years.

NPP must be strategic in choosing 2028 flagbearer – Pius Hadzide

0

Spokesperson for Bryan Acheampong’s 2028 campaign, Pius Enam Hadzide, has urged the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to be politically smart and strategic in selecting its next presidential candidate.

Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Mr. Hadzide warned that if the party chooses a candidate without careful consideration, past controversies associated with that person could be used as a reference point to undermine the campaign.

“If we’re not careful and select just anyone, every time an old issue comes up, they’ll link it to our candidate. That can cost us dearly,” he said.

According to him, the decision to change a candidate should not be taken lightly, but must be aimed at helping the NPP win power in the 2028 elections.

“This is not about change for change’s sake. It’s about change that gives us a real shot at winning power in 2028 — for the sake of everyone in the party,” he added.

Mr. Hadzide stressed the need for deep thinking and unity in choosing a candidate, stressing that the party must select someone who appeals broadly to members across all levels.

“That’s why I believe Bryan Acheampong is the best option. He’s young, relatable, and well-liked by everyone in the party. I don’t think there’s anyone in the party who can say they have a problem with Bryan. He’s helped a lot of people — financially and otherwise.”

He described Bryan Acheampong, the Member of Parliament for Abetifi and former Minister for Food and Agriculture, as a “great unifying force” with no bad blood or divisions linked to his name.

“If there must be a change, then it must be Bryan. He represents boldness, unity, and forward-thinking. We need a leader who can take a decision and stand by it — Bryan is that kind of person,” Mr. Hadzide stressed.

“Where we are now, we need a man to lead us — and Bryan Acheampong is our best bet,” he concluded.

Mr. Acheampong has already declared his intention to contest the NPP’s flagbearer race ahead of the 2028 general elections.

He made the announcement during a meeting with the leadership of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, where he sought their prayers and blessings.

Meanwhile, the New Patriotic Party has scheduled its presidential primaries for Saturday, January 31, 2026, following a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held on Tuesday, June 17, 2025.

Let’s build bridges, not barriers – Mahama urges unity at National Day of Prayer

0

President John Dramani Mahama has made a passionate call for national unity, urging Ghanaians to rise above tribal, religious, and political divisions that threaten the country’s cohesion and progress.

Speaking at the National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving on Tuesday, July 1, President Mahama emphasised the urgent need for citizens to foster togetherness and mutual respect as the nation seeks healing and transformation.

“Let us remain vigilant against the voices of tribalism, the voices of religious extremism and against the poison of political division. These are the seeds of division that we must never let take root in our precious nation, Ghana,” he declared.

He also encouraged Ghanaians to use words and actions that heal rather than harm, adding, “We must speak a language of peace, compassion, and mutual respect. We must build bridges, not barriers, for we are one people sharing one land and pursuing one identity and destiny.”

President Mahama also took the opportunity to reflect on leadership and accountability, stressing that public office is a sacred responsibility and not a privilege for personal enrichment.

“We must hold those in authority, including myself, accountable to the highest standards of integrity and humility. Public office is not a privilege for personal gain; it is a sacred trust bestowed by the people and a responsibility to serve all, especially the most vulnerable,” he said.

He reaffirmed his belief in equality before the law, stating, “Even the office of the President, which by the grace of God I now hold, is not above the law.”

The National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving brought together religious leaders, politicians, and citizens from all walks of life, united in intercession for peace, integrity, and national renewal.

Africa World Airlines launches Accra–Ouagadougou route, expands into Sahel region

0

Africa World Airlines (AWA) has officially launched a new direct flight route between Accra, Ghana and Burkina Faso’s capital Ouagadougou, marking a significant step in its expansion into the Sahel region.

The inaugural flight was announced at a brief ceremony in Accra, symbolizing AWA’s strategic commitment to enhancing intra-African connectivity and promoting regional trade under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

Founder of Africa World Airlines and Agbogbomefia of the Asogli State, Togbe Afede XIV, underscored the airline’s dedication to strengthening integration across the continent.

“Our safety record is great. Our reliability is great, and that’s the kind of tradition we expect to continue—the service we want to offer our friends from Burkina Faso,” he said.

“Hopefully, through them, we’ll link all of the Sahel to the rest of Africa, in line with President John Mahama’s vision of bringing Burkina Faso and Niger back into the fold.”

Togbe Afede XIV also acknowledged the concerns of passengers about rising airfares but assured that the airline remains focused on delivering value while prioritizing safety.

“I know that our passengers are concerned about ticket prices. We all need to understand that aviation is a very difficult business—capital intensive, with very small margins. Passengers demand the best of services, and we strive to provide the best value for money as we work to integrate the continent,” he explained.

He further addressed public expectations regarding ticket pricing amid the recent appreciation of the Ghana cedi, assuring that there will be some adjustment in the future.

“Yes, prices will go down, but it takes time. Many of our costs were based on the old exchange rate, and we continue to meet obligations priced at those earlier levels. But I want to assure our customers that AWA is committed to value, service, and most importantly—safety,” he emphasized.

Togbe Afede XIV called for support from industry partners, customers, and stakeholders to help AWA achieve its vision of connecting Ghana and Africa to the rest of the world.

AWA is starting with three flights a week with plans to improve across the region.

With the launch of this new route, Africa World Airlines becomes one of the few carriers offering regular commercial flights between Ghana and Burkina Faso, opening new opportunities for trade, tourism, and diplomatic engagement between West African nations.

Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyabeng accused of interference in scholarship corruption probe

0

A former Deputy Staff Officer of the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), DSO Mark Kwaku Asiedu-Arthur, has sued the OSP and the Attorney General at the Human Rights Division of the High Court in Accra, claiming that his dismissal was unconstitutional and violated his fundamental human rights.

According to court documents filed by his lawyer, Derrick Aboagye Asamoah, the applicant was employed by the OSP in July 2023 and served diligently until his appointment was abruptly withdrawn in June 2025.

Asiedu-Arthur contends that the decision to revoke his appointment was not only procedurally unfair but also motivated by victimisation.

He insists that the real reason for his removal was linked to his involvement in politically sensitive investigations, particularly one involving the Scholarship Secretariat.

He alleges that the Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, had a personal interest in the Scholarship Secretariat case and sought to punish him for pursuing it.

In his motion, Asiedu-Arthur argued that the OSP’s withdrawal of his appointment letter dated July 31, 2023, was done “without a hearing, and based on previously disclosed information,” describing the act as “unfair, unreasonable, and in breach of Article 23 of the Constitution, 1992.”

He claimed the OSP’s actions were tainted with illegality, procedural unfairness, and bad faith.

The applicant is seeking a declaration from the court to nullify the termination and is demanding compensation for what he describes as the infringement of his fundamental human rights.

He is also asking the court for “an order for reinstatement or, in the alternative, payment of compensation in a lump sum, recovery of legal costs in line with the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) scale of fees, and any other remedies the Honourable Court may deem fit.”

In his affidavit, Asiedu-Arthur stated that his prior termination from the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) had been fully disclosed during the OSP recruitment process and was accepted by the panel.

He emphasised that he served the office for nearly a year without any disciplinary issues or misconduct.

He explained that during his tenure at the Investigations Division of the OSP, he led inquiries into alleged corruption at the Scholarship Secretariat. His team, he said, arrested suspects, collected statements, and gathered substantial evidence.

At the height of the investigation, they were preparing to arrest Kingsley Agyemang, then CEO of the Scholarship Secretariat and now the Member of Parliament for Akim Abuakwa South.

In the affidavit, Asiedu-Arthur claimed, “That at a point in the investigation, my team was preparing to arrest Mr. Kingsley Agyemang, the Chief Executive Officer of the Scholarship Secretariat, who is now the Member of Parliament for Akim Abuakwa South and a very close friend of the Special Prosecutor (Mr. Kissi Agyebeng, Esq).

“That owing to the imminence of the 2024 general elections and the fact that Mr. Kingsley Agyemang, of the Scholarship Secretariat, was a parliamentary candidate for the Abuakwa South Constituency, the Special Prosecutor, in or around October 2024, directed that the investigation involving the Scholarship Secretariat be discontinued so as not to prejudice his political ambitions.”

Asiedu-Arthur contends that the sudden discontinuation of the investigation, followed by the termination of his appointment, amounts to victimisation and a breach of his rights under Articles 23 and 191 of the 1992 Constitution, which guarantee administrative justice and protect public servants from arbitrary dismissal.

Both the Attorney General and the Office of the Special Prosecutor have been named as respondents in the suit.

‘Dada Joe Remix’ extradited to US over alleged $100 million romance, inheritance scam

Dada Joe Remix was arrested in Ghana on May  28, 2025 Dada Joe Remix was arrested in Ghana on May  28, 2025

Embattled Ghanaian “businessman” and philanthropist, Joseph Kwadwo Badu Boateng, popularly known as Dada Joe Remix, has officially been extradited to the United States following a coordinated effort between U.S. diplomats and Ghanaian authorities.

He is expected to stand trial for allegedly orchestrating a multi-million-dollar fraud ring that targeted American victims through elaborate romance and inheritance scams.

Images shared on social media on Tuesday July 1, 2025, showed Dada Joe in an orange jumpsuit and shackles, being escorted by U.S. officials.

The extradition underscores the growing collaboration between Ghana and the U.S. in tackling transnational fraud.

U.S. Justice Department officials and the FBI are also expected to pursue the extradition of additional suspects linked to similar fraudulent operations.

The Ghana Gold Board has reported that gold exports for June 2025 alone reached $900 million.

According to the Chief Executive Officer, Sammy Gyamfi, gold exports in the first six months of 2025 have already surpassed the total gold exports recorded for the entire year of 2024.

He noted that over 50 tons of gold from small-scale miners have been exported since the establishment of GoldBod.

Addressing a press conference on June 30, 2025, Gyamfi stated, “You know that in the whole of 2024, gold exports for the entire year stood at 66 tons, with an export value of $4.6 billion. We’ve done only six months, and yet we’ve crossed the $4.6 billion we achieved in the whole of 2024. We’ve gone beyond $5 billion.

“In terms of volume, we are also approaching the 66-ton mark. We’ve already done over 50 tons, and we are optimistic that by the end of next month, we will have hit 60 tons.”

He added that revenue from gold exports has contributed significant foreign exchange inflows, which have helped to strengthen the cedi.

The GoldBod CEO further highlighted that, for the first time in six months, gold exports from small-scale mining have exceeded those from large-scale mining.

“This month alone, we have brought in no less than $900 million in forex for the Bank of Ghana. So, if the Bank of Ghana has enough forex liquidity for the market and government obligations, and the cedi is strong and stable, it is because of some of these initiatives the GoldBod is undertaking,” he added.

Sammy Gyamfi also announced that all licenses previously issued under the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC) are no longer valid, adding that the new licensing regime has officially commenced.

Ghana needs divine healing from corruption and moral decay

0

The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, has called on the people of the region to fervently seek the face of God in prayer to cleanse the nation of corruption, moral decay, and practices that continue to hinder its progress.

He made the call while addressing worshippers during the National Prayer and Thanksgiving Day service held at the Calvary Charismatic Centre (CCC) in Kumasi on Tuesday, July 1.

According to the Minister, the challenges confronting the country go beyond politics and policy and require divine intervention to restore righteousness, integrity, and accountability in both public and private life.

“As we are gathered here today, we pray that God heals our lands from all the rot and corrupt activities. We seek that God gives us one heart of purpose and unity that will drive our national developmental agenda,” he said.

Ghanaian dancehall musician Stonebwoy, in an earlier interview on the +44 Podcast with Sideman & Zeze Millz in May 2023, stated that he is the originator of the “Afro Dancehall” genre in Ghana.

According to the “Jejereje” hitmaker, he coined the term Afro-Dancehall 10 years ago, following his re-entry into the music industry around 2007.

Stonebwoy explained, “It is literally broken down as Afrobeat and dancehall. It is very simple in that context. I am very confident that I coined this name more than a decade ago, and I have been living up to it till today.”

Ghanaian musician Stonebwoy has taken pride in being the originator of the Afro-Dancehall genre, a space that has inspired many young musicians.

The award-winning singer, regarded as one of Ghana’s biggest musical exports, expressed his fulfillment in witnessing the growth and widespread adoption of Afro-Dancehall tunes.

“It is literally broken down as Afrobeat and dancehall. It is very simple in that context. I am only very confident enough to have coined this name more than a decade ago, and I have been living up to it till today.

“I believe that it is a very beautiful space to be in. It will interest you to know that there are tons of African youths who are into the Afro-Dancehall style and who pay a lot of respect to the name Stonebwoy for being a fierce force and pushing this to the world,” the dancehall musician elaborated in the interview.

According to Stonebwoy, Afro-Dancehall was born when he received a musical calling back in 2007.

He said it took careful thought and hard work to create the perfect name for a genre that combines African sounds with dancehall rhythms.

“My history with Afro-Dancehall is that I should be, you know what they say, that an idea is not in one man’s head, it will interest you to know that I have been pushing Afro-Dancehall as a coin, as a term, from the early days when I started my career, even before I officially launched. It was the calling I had. I sat and wondered what I was going to call it, and as far back as 2007 and 2008, I have been about it,” he added.

The hitmaker has continued to make waves following the release of his 17-track album, ‘5th Dimension,’ in April 2023.

Stonebwoy was also adjudged Best Reggae/Dancehall Artiste at the 24th edition of the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA).

Former deputy staff officer sues OSP for wrongful termination, alleges victimisation

Kuami Eugene expresses intense admiration for Amaarae’s talent

Ghanaian music star Kuami Eugene has praised fellow artiste Amaarae, describing her as a long-standing musical force whose extraordinary talent is only now being widely recognised by the mainstream.

Speaking in an interview with Doreen Avio, Kuami Eugene referred to Amaarae as his “big sister” and a “legend,” expressing admiration for her consistency and unique appeal over the years.

“Amaarae is my big sister. She’s a legend, though. But the funny thing is, it has never been quiet with Amaarae. It’s just her circle… That’s where she finds herself,” he said.

He explained that Amaarae’s sound—often rooted in alternative and global influences—resonated strongly within niche audiences but remained relatively under the radar of Ghana’s mainstream music consumers.

“The people she used to appeal to were not the regular Ghanaian masses. She’s been making waves since. It’s just quite sad that people are now getting to know Amaarae. But I’m excited they’re getting to know her now because the talent she has is insane,” Kuami Eugene added.

Amaarae, known for her genre-bending sound and bold artistic style, gained international acclaim with her hit single , which charted globally and featured artists like Kali Uchis and Moliy. She has since performed on major global stages and continues to be a leading figure in the alternative African pop scene.

Patriotic Institute marks fresh start for NPP – Sammi Awuku

Former Director General of the National Lottery Authority and prominent New Patriotic Party (NPP) figure, Sammi Awuku, has hailed the establishment of the NPP Patriotic Institute as a timely and bold step toward national political renewal.

In a post shared on his official Facebook page, Awuku described the initiative as a “call to action, a fresh chapter, a bolder vision, and a rekindled patriotism” that could shape the future direction of the party.

Ghanaians thrive more under NPP governments – Pius Hadzide claims

0

Spokesperson for Team Bryan Acheampong’s 2028 campaign, Pius Enam Hadzide, has asserted that Ghanaians have consistently experienced better living conditions under New Patriotic Party (NPP) governments.

In an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Mr Hadzide expressed concern over the NPP’s current political standing but remained confident that history supports the party’s track record of improving citizens’ lives.

“Ask anyone — even our opponents will admit it — Ghanaians prosper more under NPP governments,” he stated.

Mr Hadzide pointed to a number of flagship policies introduced by successive NPP administrations to support his claim. These included the Free Basic Education policy under President John
Agyekum Kufuor, which covered education from primary to junior high school, as well as the School Feeding Programme, which continues to support thousands of schoolchildren.

“Who introduced school feeding? It was the NPP. Who made it possible for your child to go to school without paying a dime from primary to JHS? It was President Kufuor’s NPP government,” he emphasised.

He also highlighted the introduction of the Metro Mass Transit system by the NPP, which, he said, greatly enhanced public transportation and improved daily mobility for many Ghanaians.
“Metro Mass was another NPP initiative. These are things that made life better for the ordinary Ghanaian,” he added.

Turning to more recent developments, Mr Hadzide cited Free Senior High School (Free SHS), introduced under President Nana Akufo-Addo, as a transformative social intervention that has relieved financial pressure on many families.

“Free SHS is one of the biggest social interventions in our history. It was the NPP that brought it,” he said.

He further claimed that businesses flourished under NPP leadership due to favourable policies and sound governance.

While acknowledging that NPP administrations may have faced “minor hitches,” Mr Hadzide insisted that the overall impact of the party’s governance had been largely positive.

“Even if there were challenges, the truth is that NPP governments make life easier for Ghanaians. Businesses grow, children go to school, and families get some breathing space,” he noted.
He warned that under the current National Democratic Congress (NDC) government, Ghana risked falling back into economic difficulties unless the NPP returned to power in 2028.

“We are not in government today, and if we don’t work hard to return in 2028, Ghanaians may fall back into the mess we’ve seen before,” he cautioned.

Mr Hadzide concluded with a rallying call for unity among NPP members, urging them to intensify efforts to reclaim power and continue what he described as the party’s pro-development agenda.

Barcelona Plan Camp Nou Tribute Match For Lionel Messi In 2026

Lionel Messi

Barcelona have confirmed plans to honour club legend Lionel Messi with a special tribute match at Camp Nou once the stadium’s ongoing renovations are complete.

The Argentine maestro, who spent nearly two decades at the club, departed in 2021 for Paris Saint-Germain after an illustrious spell that saw him win 34 major trophies, including 10 La Liga titles and four UEFA Champions League crowns. Widely regarded as the greatest player in the club’s history, Messi scored a record 672 goals in 778 appearances.

Barça vice-president Elena Fort told La Vanguardia that the tribute is non-negotiable and will take place when the refurbished Camp Nou is ready. “Leo Messi’s tribute at Camp Nou must take place when the stadium is 100% finished. It will definitely happen because he is the best player in Barça’s history,” Fort said.

Renovations are expected to be completed by summer 2026. The upgraded Camp Nou will become Europe’s largest stadium, with a capacity of 105,000. Until then, the club continues to play home matches at the Olympic Stadium.

Messi, now 38, has added two Ligue 1 titles with PSG since his Barça exit and currently plays for Inter Miami. He recently featured in a 4-0 FIFA Club World Cup loss to PSG, playing the full 90 minutes.

The planned tribute match will mark a poignant return to the stadium where Messi delivered countless magical moments.

Greed threatens Ghana’s future, Cardinal Turkson warns at National Day of Prayer

0

Cardinal Peter Kodwo Appiah Turkson has urged Ghanaians to embrace a renewed sense of responsibility and solidarity, warning that unchecked greed and selfish gain threaten the nation’s shared resources and the well-being of future generations.

Preaching at Ghana’s first National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving in Accra on Tuesday, July 1, Cardinal Turkson said the day must go beyond words and become a turning point for moral courage and spiritual renewal.

“We gather for this sacred occasion not only to give thanks to God but under the theme of reflection, reset and renewal for national prosperity,” he said.

“These are not just words, they are a call to moral clarity, national courage and spiritual awakening for fashioning a Ghana of opportunities for the inclusive well-being of all its children.”

Drawing from scripture, the Cardinal likened Ghana’s moment to the prophet Jeremiah’s call for the Israelites to “stand at a crossroads” and return to ancient, righteous paths.

He reminded Ghanaians that true prosperity goes beyond wealth and must include access to food, water, shelter, healthcare, education and peace for every citizen.

Highlighting the consequences of environmental exploitation, he used the example of the “tragedy of the commons” — where shared resources are destroyed when people put individual gain above the collective good.

“In the Rift Valley, there’s a community that keeps common grazing land for all. But if someone brings too many cows or sheep, the land fails to serve everyone. That is the ‘tragedy of the commons’,” he explained.

“Here in Ghana, our land is rich and endowed. It must serve all, not be destroyed by greed.”

He warned that Ghana is already suffering the consequences of such greed.

“The Pra River no longer yields prawns and shrimps; children who swim in our rivers are exposed to cyanide and mercury. Our church hospitals see rising cases of birth deformities. These are the consequences of irresponsible exploitation,” he lamented.

Cardinal Turkson stressed that transforming the nation is not the task of the President alone, but of every Ghanaian.

“Whatever vision of Ghana we express, we must also know our place in that vision. We need virtuous Ghanaians who live for more than personal gain,” he said.

Reflecting on Ghana’s past, from its independence symbols like the Coat of Arms to Kwame Nkrumah’s bold technological vision, the Cardinal said the nation must draw lessons from its history to build a future that serves the common good.

“To reflect is to see our blessings and our blind spots. To reset is to turn away from what destroys us; corruption, division, and exploitation. And to renew is to build a Ghana where every child can flourish,” he said.

Quoting from the Book of Jeremiah, he urged citizens to stand at the “crossroads”, look back at paths that once led to progress and unity, and reclaim those values with courage.

Closing his message, Cardinal Turkson called for a deep sense of fraternity among Ghanaians, and constant prayer for the nation, its leaders and its people.

“Virtuous living is what we all need in this land to make everything work. You don’t need to be a priest or pastor; every Ghanaian must live responsibly and think of the common good,” he said.

“Let us reflect, reset and renew; so Ghana can be a land of prosperous living for the well-being of all.”

Police Rescue Ghanaian Trafficking Victim, Warn Against Travel Scams

0

The Nigeria Police Force, through the INTERPOL National Central Bureau (NCB) Abuja, in close collaboration with police operatives of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT Police Command, has successfully rescued Sammed Iddrisu, a Ghanaian citizen who was deceptively trafficked into Nigeria under the guise of processing travel documents for migration to Europe.

This was contained in a statement signed by the Force Public Relation Officer Assistant Commissioner of Police, ACP Muyiwa Adejobi, said the operation, which was executed on 27th June 2025 in Abuja, followed actionable intelligence received from INTERPOL NCB Accra, Ghana, on 16th June 2025.

The statement also hinted that Preliminary investigations reveal that on 10th January 2025, the victim’s father, Mr. Nartey Louda, was defrauded of GHC 55,000 by a trafficker identified as Attah, who falsely promised to facilitate a French visa and related travel documents for his son.

Acting on these fraudulent assurances, Sammed was directed to travel to Abuja, Nigeria, with the expectation of collecting the said visa.

Upon arriving in Abuja on 25th June 2025, however, the victim was unlawfully detained and coerced into participating in illicit internet-based activities associated with the QNET pyramid scheme, a fraudulent operation disguised as an e-commerce business.

The criminal syndicate also attempted to manipulate other individuals, including a Ghanian, who managed to escape and return to Ghana, where he reported the incident to the authorities, triggering international coordination and rescue efforts.

As a result of proactive surveillance, intelligence acquisition, and a prompt response from INTERPOL NCB Abuja and the FCT police operatives, the victim was rescued and reintegration procedures are underway.

The INTERPOL NCB Abuja has initiated necessary steps to ensure these fraudulent individuals are apprehended and made to face the full wrath of the law.

The Nigeria Police Force hereby cautions members of the public to exercise due diligence, verify travel-related offers through official diplomatic channels, and report all suspicious persons or activities happening around them through appropriate and official law enforcement channels.

NDC appointees must avoid looting mindset to prevent national disaster – KSM

Veteran comedian and social commentator, KSM Veteran comedian and social commentator, KSM

Veteran comedian and social commentator Kwaku Sintim-Misa, also known as KSM, has praised the arrest of the former Managing Director of GIHOC, Maxwell Kofi Jumah, as a critical step in Ghana’s fight against systemic corruption.

Jumah was detained on June 29, 2025, by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) over the alleged theft of state vehicles, including a Genesis G90 purchased at just 5% of its actual value.

In a fiery monologue on his YouTube channel, KSM condemned the attitude among some appointees who view public office as an opportunity to plunder.

“This was a mentality that they’re here to reap and loot the country. Even with nothing to loot, the little that was there, they took.

“It’s nothing personal, but I was happy to know that work is being done and that Kofi Jumah has been picked up by National Security in Kumasi. Work is being done, and he is not the only one.

“If those who looted are being picked up one by one, that will send a signal that Ghanaians are sick and tired of being sick and tired, and they are saying ‘never again,’” he said.

He warned the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) against allowing any of its appointees in government to adopt such a corrupt mindset.

“If the NDC’s appointees adopt this mindset, it’ll be a monumental disaster.

“Resetting means thinking as one nation, one destiny. Stay focused; this isn’t the season for political games,” he added.

Dismiss case filed by suspended Chief Justice Torkornoo

Dr Dominic Akuritinga Ayine and Suspended CJ Torkornoo Dr Dominic Akuritinga Ayine and Suspended CJ Torkornoo

The Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dr Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, has urged an Accra High Court to dismiss a case brought before it by the suspended Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkornoo.

In court documents filed by Deputy Attorney General Dr Justice Srem Sai, the state argued that the issues raised by Justice Torkornoo have either already been resolved or are currently under consideration by the Supreme Court.

Justice Torkornoo has approached both the Supreme Court and now the High Court, seeking to halt her removal process following the determination of a prima facie case against her by President John Dramani Mahama.

She claims her constitutional rights have been violated, arguing that she was not adequately informed of the basis on which the President and the Council of State made a prima facie determination regarding the petitions against her.

Justice Torkornoo also alleges that she has been subjected to invasive searches when appearing before the committee and has questioned the neutrality of Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang, who is participating in the proceedings despite being involved in a related case.

Consequently, the Attorney General has outlined several related cases that have either been determined by the Supreme Court or remain pending before it. These include Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Torkornoo v The Attorney-General & 5 Others (J8/113/2025), Centre for Citizenship Constitutional Electoral Systems LBG (CenCes) v The Attorney-General & 2 Others (J1/20/2025), and Vincent Ekow Assafuah v The Attorney-General (J1/18/2025).

According to Dr Ayine, these ongoing or concluded matters render the current High Court application improper.

“The issues forming the basis of the originating motion have either been adjudicated by the Supreme Court or are pending before it. This Honourable Court is therefore urged to strike out the Chief Justice’s application for judicial review,” he said.

Justice Torkornoo was suspended by President John Dramani Mahama after the President, in consultation with the Council of State, found a prima facie case against her based on three petitions for her removal.

Analyst calls on GRA to review 3% flat tax rate for small businesses

0

Francis Timore Boi urges GRA to review 3% flat rate Francis Timore Boi urges GRA to review 3% flat rate

Francis Timore Boi, a tax analyst, is urging the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) to review the 3% flat rate applied to businesses earning GH¢20,000 or more annually, arguing that the current threshold is too low and could unfairly burden very small businesses.

His comments come amid the implementation of the Modified Taxation Scheme, which takes effect on July 1, 2025, targeting informal sector workers across the country.

While commending the GRA’s efforts to widen the tax net, he believes the GH¢20,000 threshold should be raised to ease the tax burden on micro-enterprises.

He noted that taxing businesses at that level yields only GH¢600 annually, which he sees as insignificant, suggesting that a higher threshold would be more reasonable and impactful.

Despite his reservations about the current arrangement, he acknowledged the benefits of the broader policy.

He believes expanding the tax net could eventually lead to lower tax rates across the board.

“When more people contribute to taxes, the government won’t need to rely so heavily on raising rates or introducing new consumption taxes,” he is qouted to have said by Citi Business News.

Francis also raised concerns about the timing of the rollout, stating that starting in the middle of the year gives businesses limited time to understand and adjust to the changes.

“With only six months left in the year, and with minimal public awareness, many small businesses might resist, especially those now being taxed for the first time,” he said.

He recommended that future tax schemes be introduced at the beginning of the year and accompanied by strong public education campaigns to ease implementation.

NDC’s reset is to persecute, not thank God – Haruna Mohammed

0

The Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Haruna Mohammed, has slammed the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) framing of July 1 as a National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving, saying the party’s so-called reset is more about persecuting political opponents than genuinely thanking God.

Speaking on JoyNews’ The Pulse on Tuesday, July 1, Mr Mohammed accused the NDC of hypocrisy, saying their recent rhetoric does not align with their actions in government.

“Let us be factual and let the people know that your reset is to persecute, and that’s what they are doing. It has nothing to do with thanking God,” he said in a rebuttal to earlier comments from NDC’s Deputy General Secretary, Mustapha Gbande, who claimed that while Ghanaians were renewing their minds in Christ, the NPP remained fixated on politics and numbers.

Mr Mohammed clarified that the idea of a national prayer day was not new and had been done under former President Akufo-Addo during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“On the 25th of March, 2020, His Excellency Akufo-Addo declared a National Day of Prayer, and this was done across the length and breadth of Ghana. We thanked God, and we prayed to God over a befallen pandemic. So this is not the first time,” he noted.

He added that while the NPP participated in the recent prayer service organized by President John Mahama, the NDC failed to reciprocate during similar moments under the previous government.

“They [NDC] didn’t come to thank God when we did ours,” he said.

“Now they talk about a peaceful election—he should have been clapping for us. If we [NPP] had behaved the way they did during the elections, Ghana would be in a different state.”

The NPP Deputy General Secretary also raised concerns about worsening insecurity in parts of the country under the current administration, questioning the NDC’s claims of peace.

“In his own region, Oti, people cannot sleep. They are killing them day in and day out. Bawku has escalated—peace does not exist in that place,” he said.

On the economy, he dismissed Mr Gbande’s optimism over improvements in the cedi’s performance, pointing out that the cost of living remains high.

“You talk about the cedi to dollar—but rent has not changed, food prices have not changed, cement prices have not changed,” Mr Mohammed said.

“Ghana’s democracy is deteriorating, and we should be worried.”

He added that beyond the symbolic gestures, the NDC’s actions, particularly in how it is treating dissenting voices and using bail conditions to punish political opponents, reflect a government more interested in control than reconciliation.

MTN’s new data offer hits snag as system glitch disrupts bundle purchases

0

Telecommunications giant, MTN Ghana has announced a major technical challenge affecting data bundle purchases nationwide, just hours after launching a new data volume offer that promised customers 15% additional data.

In a statement released on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, the company disclosed that the glitch has temporarily disabled customers’ ability to purchase data bundles, including access to the newly launched bonus offer.

“Whilst implementing the data offer, which will provide 15% additional volume of data from today, 1st July, 2025, MTN experienced a major technical issue which has affected data bundle purchases, including the data volume offer,” the statement noted.

MTN acknowledged the disruption caused and extended an apology to its users. “We recognise the importance of staying connected and sincerely apologise for the inconvenience this may cause.”

The telecom provider assured customers that its technical teams are actively working to resolve the issue with urgency and restore full services.

“Please be assured that our technical teams are working with urgency to resolve the issue and restore services as soon as possible,” MTN emphasised.

107 out of 316 suspected cases confirmed, no deaths – Akandoh
