200,000 children in Ghana have uncorrected refractive errors- Dr Agyemfra

0

More than 200,000 children in Ghana suffer from uncorrected refractive errors, a leading cause of visual impairment, with one in four schoolchildren requiring vision correction.

A Chief Optometrist at the Trust Hospital in Accra, Dr Naa Kowah Agyemfra, said that although refractive error, which causes visual impairment, accounts for 50 per cent of the cases, less than 30 per cent of those with refractive errors have access to proper correction due to cost, access issues or myths.

“Obviously, this is not just a clinical problem but a public health crisis and a cultural communication gap,” she stressed.

Dr Agyemfra made the remarks while delivering an address at the second Refractive Error Day Symposium & 8th White Coat Ceremony at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST)

it was on the theme: “Bridging the gap: Dispelling refractive error myths to improve access”.

The white coat ceremony marked the transition of 100 level 400 Doctor of Optometry students from preclinical studies to clinical practice, where they were robed in white coats, widely recognised as a symbol of medical professionals.

They took the optometry oath, promising to practise the art and science of optometry diligently and conscientiously, uphold and promote the highest standards, ethics and ideals of the profession, as well as safeguard patients’ information.

Disproving myths about refractive errors, she explained that it was false to believe spectacles weaken the eyes.

Instead, she emphasised they help the eyes focus better, stressing “without them, you strain your eyes more and may even develop headaches”.

Additionally, she said sugar does not directly cause refractive errors.

However, it can affect the vision of people with diabetes, but glasses or spectacles are for refraction and not for sugar levels.

She also added, “children, teens and adults can all have refractive errors.”

Dr Agyemfra, also the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Eye Express, Accra, emphasised that wearing glasses was not a sign of weakness but a means of empowerment, noting, “refractive errors are not curses but are correctable conditions”.

Recruitment

The President of the Ghana Optometry Association (GOA), Professor Samuel Bert Boadi-Kusi, stated that no optometrists have been employed in the public sector for nearly five years, despite training institutions producing approximately 200 optometrists annually.

Instead, he said that what was always done was replacing those in active service who retired, resigned or died.

Therefore, he called on the government to recruit optometrists to work actively, especially in underserved areas.

Furthermore, he urged the Ministry of Health and its agencies to urgently review the long-overdue approval of a two-year horsemanship programme for Doctors of Optometry, with suitable remuneration.

Prof. Boadi-Kusi advocated refractive services to be integrated into primary healthcare and included in the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS). He emphasised that refractive error was a health issue and a barrier to education, opportunities and dignity.

Challenges myths

A Professor at the School of Optometry and Visual Science, University of Cape Coast (UCC), Professor Emmanuel Kwesi Abu, who chaired the event, said that globally, refractive errors remained underdiagnosed, undertreated and misunderstood.

Despite the availability of simple, affordable interventions such as spectacles, he expressed concern that millions still suffer because of misinformation, cultural beliefs and limited access to services.

He told the students that their field was rapidly evolving with advances in diagnostic imaging, ocular therapeutics, contact lens innovations, and public health strategies.

Therefore, he encouraged them to stay curious and keep up with new trends.

Impact

In a welcome address, the Head of Department of Optometry and Visual Science at KNUST, Professor Mohammed Abdul-Kabir, stated that refractive error, if left uncorrected, can significantly and adversely affect patients’ well-being and may also lead to poor academic performance among children.

He urged the students stepping out to begin the clinical phase of their training to work harder and stay up-to-date with modern eye health and optometry care techniques.

Dr. Adrian Alter appointed new IMF resident representative for Ghana

0

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has named seasoned Senior Economist, Dr. Adrian Alter as its new Resident Representative to Ghana, effective September 2, 2025.

He succeeds Dr. Leandro Medina, who concludes his three-year tenure in August 2025 after playing a crucial role in Ghana’s ongoing US$3 billion Extended Credit Facility (ECF) programme.

Dr. Alter, who is currently part of the IMF mission team overseeing Ghana’s ECF, brings more than a decade of international macroeconomic experience.

His expertise spans financial stability, monetary policy, inflation management and sovereign debt restructuring.

He has supported IMF programmes in Ghana, Tunisia and Serbia and is expected to be in Accra in August for a smooth transition before assuming full responsibilities in September.

His mandate will include coordination of the IMF programme, policy dialogue with key institutions such as the Ministry of Finance and Bank of Ghana and stakeholder engagement with civil society and the broader policy community.

Dr. Alter holds a Ph.D. in Quantitative Economics and Finance from the University of Konstanz, Germany, and an MSc in Finance from HEC Lausanne in Switzerland.

He has also completed executive training in Financial Stability at Yale University.

Prior to joining the IMF, Dr. Alter worked with the European Central Bank, Deutsche Bundesbank and UBS Investment Bank focusing on banking supervision, systemic risk and macro-prudential policy.

His research and professional background align closely with Ghana’s current economic priorities under the ECF, including structural fiscal reforms, domestic revenue mobilization and strengthening of financial institutions.

Dr. Alter’s experience and policy acumen are expected to be instrumental as Ghana works toward meeting the IMF’s benchmarks and sustaining macroeconomic recovery

His role will also involve supporting ongoing tax policy reforms, monitoring fiscal targets and ensuring that IMF-backed strategies translate into inclusive and durable growth.

The exit of Dr. Medina marks the end of a critical phase of the programme, during which Ghana secured multiple disbursements and undertook debt restructuring negotiations.

The appointment of his successor, also signals the Fund’s continued commitment to supporting Ghana’s economic stability and reform agenda.

Ghana Finalizes Agreement to Build Local Tractor Assembly Hub

0

• Ghana partners with Hattat Traktör to set up a tractor assembly plant.
• Aim to boost agricultural mechanization, with 78% of work still done manually.
• Part of a broader national support program for farmers.

Ghana has finalized an agreement with Turkish equipment manufacturer Hattat Traktör to establish a new agricultural tractor assembly plant within the country. Agriculture Minister Eric Opoku announced the deal on July 4 via his Facebook page.

Under this partnership, Hattat Traktör will provide technical assistance to 10G Globaltech Ltd, a Ghanaian firm selected to lead the industrial project alongside the Ministry of Agriculture.

Once operational, the assembly unit is expected to significantly boost Ghana’s ability to supply tractors to farmers. Further information regarding the start date, construction timeline, production capacity, or specific location of the plant has not yet been disclosed.

The announcement follows Opoku’s June unveiling of the “Farmers Service Centres.” This government program aims to equip each agricultural district in the country with fully stocked centers containing machinery and inputs to boost farm productivity. For authorities, enhancing local tractor assembly capacity is a major strategic priority, especially since mechanization in Ghanaian agriculture remains limited.

A 2022 study found that approximately 78% of agricultural operations in Ghana are still performed manually. This low level of mechanized farming is one of the main obstacles to expanding cultivated land in the country. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Ghana has 10 million hectares of arable land, of which 7.4 million hectares were being used in 2022.

Moreover, several factors must be addressed to meaningfully advance agricultural mechanization in Ghana. A 2020 report by the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) highlighted the lack of well-structured mechanization services in the country. The organization cited high equipment costs and limited access to credit as major barriers for both farmers and the development of the local supply market.

Entertainment Critique Targets King Paluta’s Public Conduct

Ghanaian entertainment commentator MC Yaa Yeboah has criticized musician King Paluta following an incident during his UK performance, asserting he “lacks personality” beyond his music.

Speaking on Accra-based United Television’s United Showbiz on July 5, Yeboah addressed a viral clip showing Paluta insulting an event patron.

“If you take away King Paluta’s music, he lacks personality. There is nothing to like about him,” Yeboah stated, urging the artist to build a respectful public image independent of his craft. She emphasized that his rise from underground acclaim required sustained personal development: “When the music is not there, people should love you for your personality.”

The controversy stems from Paluta’s alleged confrontation with a woman at a UK show, where he reportedly interpreted her expression as dislike and responded with insults. While Paluta has not publicly addressed the incident, industry observers note rising scrutiny of Ghanaian artists’ off-stage conduct amid global exposure.

This critique surfaces amid broader discussions about artist accountability in Ghana’s entertainment sector. Similar debates followed recent incidents involving musicians like Shatta Wale and Medikal, highlighting tensions between creative expression and public decorum. Analysts suggest such incidents could impact brand partnerships and international bookings for artists perceived as volatile.

The National Commission on Culture has previously advocated for etiquette training for performers, though no formal policies exist. As Ghana’s creative exports grow, the balance between artistic authenticity and professional conduct remains a focal point for industry stakeholders.

Some member of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), mainly the grassroots of the party, have expressed their frustration after reports of the appointment of Rosemond Obeng, a former aide of former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, as a senior presidential staffer emerged.

Following the reports, a video of Rosemond Obeng announcing her appointment in Mahama’s government has popped up.

The former aide to Dr Bawumia, the presidential candidate of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) for the 2024 Election, who jumped ship to join the NDC in the run-up to the election, confirmed her new role in the John Dramani Mahama government.

Rosemond Obeng, who was representing the Minister of State in charge of Government Communication, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, at a school programme, said that she was now an aide at the Office of the President.

“I am singularly honoured to share in this special moment with you all here today at North Hills International School at the 6th Annual Speech and Prize-Giving Day.

“As the lady introduced me already as a representative from the Office of the President, in my capacity as a presidential aide, I bring you warmest greetings from Honourable Felix Kwakye Ofosu. He is the Minister for Government Communications, and he is the one I am representing today as the guest speaker,” she said.

She went on to tout the commitment of the government to the development of the youth.

“This government, under the leadership of HE John Dramani Mahama, is committed to the development of our young people. They are our hope,” she added.

Rosemond Obeng, popularly known as “People’s Mother,” resigned from the NPP to join the NDC a few days before the December 2024 Election.

The former aide to Dr Bawumia, who was a former National NPP TESCON coordinator, in an interview on GHOne TV, said that based on her experience working with the former vice president, she was of the view that he lacked the courage and leadership qualities to steer Ghana’s affairs.

“We require crucial leadership, and I am aware that my father and former boss is unable to provide it. We get bad results, output, and performance from bad leadership,” she said.

Musicians are the most pampered professionals ever – Bullgod on King Paluta’s outburst at fan

Bullgod is an artiste manager and entertainment pundit Bullgod is an artiste manager and entertainment pundit

Artiste manager and entertainment pundit, Bullgod, has stated that musicians are the most pampered professionals, more than individuals in any other field.

He made the statement while reacting to rapper King Paluta’s recent outburst, where the ‘Makoma’ hitmaker insulted a fan during his performance in London.

Speaking on UTV’s United Showbiz, Bullgod explained that unlike other professionals such as soldiers or doctors, musicians often expect constant praise and applause, which he believes has made many of them entitled.

“Artistes are the most pampered professionals ever. I’ve not seen a soldier going to war and asking for people to cheer him on, I’ve not seen a doctor doing surgery and expecting people to cheer him before, except artistes. They feel as though they are human than somebody. If your gifts call crowds, you have to respect the crowds. This is disrespect at the highest level,” he said.

Bullgod expressed disappointment in King Paluta’s attitude and criticised him for disrespecting a fan who came to watch him perform.

According to him, for someone who struggled underground for over a decade, the rapper should be more appreciative and humble.

“King Paluta is a fool. A fool is somebody who is unwise, a fool is somebody who does not recognise where he is. Today I was on a particular platform where he mentioned on that same platform that he was underground for 15 years and I stated that I’ve understood why he was underground for 15 years.

“If he goes now, he will be away for 88 years. He is human, some of these things could happen but the moment you get into that realm where you start insulting people and people are calming you down, you have to listen to them,” Bullgod added.

Why Dr Omane Boamah ditched NPP for NDC under Kufuor’s era – Kwesi Pratt details

0

Kwesi Pratt Jnr (L) says defence minister Edward Omane Boamah (R) was a number of the NPP Kwesi Pratt Jnr (L) says defence minister Edward Omane Boamah (R) was a number of the NPP

Did you know that the current Minister of Defence of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) government, led by President John Dramani Mahama, Dr Edward Omane Boamah, was a member of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP)?

According to veteran journalist, Kwesi Pratt Jnr, in an interview on Radio Gold’s Alhaji and Alhaji, the Minister of Defence used to be a member of the NPP.

“Dr Omane Boamah is Minister of Defence. One of the three key ministers in this administration. Where did he come from? I know how he entered the NDC,” he said.

He went on to narrate how Omane Boamah left the NPP to join the NDC when he was the President of the National Union of Ghana Students.

He asserted that the now defence minister left the NPP to join the NDC after he was castigated by his party members when he decided to criticise happenings in the John Agyekum Kufuor government.

“In the second term of President Kufuor, when prices were running helter-skelter, especially of fuel and so on, we decided to set up the Committee for Joint Action. So, at the meeting, I argued that what was happening was something which worried even people in the NPP, and, therefore, it was important to get those people in the NPP to speak out.

“So, I was tasked to find somebody like that. At the time, Dr Omane Boamah, as President of the National Union of Ghana Students, was under attack by the NPP and had been drawn into a fight with the NPP. So, I suggested Dr Omane Boamah, and I was asked to bring him and to make him read the first statement of the Committee for Joint Action,” he narrated.

He continued to say that; “That is how Dr Omane Boamah eventually became a member of the NDC and has risen to the very top, and there are many others.”

A section of football fans on social media has lambasted legendary footballer Cristiano Ronaldo for absenting himself from the funeral of his teammate Diogo Jota.

On July 5, 2025, mourners, including global football stars, attended the funeral of Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silver in their hometown of Gondomar, Portugal.

Players and coaching staff from the Portuguese national team and his club side, Liverpool, were present in large numbers to pay their last respects to the player who lost his life in a fatal accident after their car crashed in Spain.

However, Ronaldo was noticeably absent among the dignitaries while the event was ongoing, prompting questions from football fans across the globe.

Some questioned why Ronaldo, the captain of the Portuguese national team, would skip such an event for a teammate whom he paid tribute to on his social media page.

The aggrieved fans accused the Al Nassr forward of being egoistic and showing disrespect to the deceased, with whom he played in the team to clinch major international trophies.

Despite the barrage of criticisms, Ronaldo has not issued a statement or addressed concerns about his absence from the funeral.

Parliament to sit on Mondays and Saturdays to expedite Legislative work

0

Ghana’s Parliament is set to extend sittings from Monday, July 7, 2025, as it intensifies efforts to complete outstanding parliamentary work ahead of its planned adjournment.

Presenting the Business Statement for the seventh week, Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga underscored that the House would now meet on both Mondays and Saturdays to fast-track the consideration of Legislative Instruments (LIs) that need to mature before the end of the session.

Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga, who also chairs the Business Committee, noted that the week ahead will be demanding, with 55 ministers and the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Johnson Asiama, expected to appear before the House to respond to questions from members of parliament.

He hinted that, in line with Standing Order 160, new bills could be introduced and, if deemed urgent, passed through all necessary stages within a single sitting.

Additionally, the week could see the laying of papers, presentation of committee reports, and debates on motions with any accompanying resolutions.

“Motions may be debated and their consequential resolutions, if any, taken during the week. In accordance with Standing Order 216(2) and subject to Standing Order 67, the Committee submits to the House the order in which business shall be taken.”

During deliberations on the Business Statement, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin urged the Majority Leader to invite the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Jean Mensa, to brief the House on the rerun of parliamentary elections in 19 polling stations within the Ablekuma North Constituency.

Mahama finds solution for Akufo-Addo’s US$400 million National Cathedral hole

0

The government, has announced plans to convert the controversial National Cathedral project into a National Cultural Convention Centre (NCCC), positioning it as the flagship hub for Ghana’s burgeoning creative economy and cultural diplomacy.

The stalled National Cathedral project, initiated by the Akufo-Addo government as part of a promise made to God by Nana Akufo-Addo, the NPP Presidential candidate, to aid him in winning the 2016 general elections, was estimated to cost US$400 million.

President Mahama calls for national unity at post-election dialogue

0

President John Mahama has called for sustained collaboration among stakeholders to safeguard Ghana’s democracy and to consolidate its position as West Africa’s most peaceful nation.

The President made the remarks while addressing the closing session of the Post-2024 Elections Evaluation Dialogue in Koforidua, organised by the National Peace Council (NPC) in partnership with the West Africa Network for Peacebuilding (WANEP), the Ghana Center for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana) and other stakeholders.

The three-day conference, on the theme: “Dialoguing for a Stronger Democracy and Social Cohesion,” was funded by the European Union (EU), the United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS), and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and aimed to assess the conduct of the 2024 general election to improve future electoral processes.

Peace ranking

Citing the 2024 Global Peace Index, which ranked Ghana 55th globally, a four-place drop from 2023, President Mahama described the report as a reminder of the need for continuous efforts to maintain peace.

“While we remain the most peaceful country in West Africa, we cannot afford complacency.

We must address electoral violence, toxic political rhetoric and mistrust in institutions,” he stated.

He condemned isolated incidents of violence during the 2024 polls and directed the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to ensure swift investigations and prosecution of offenders.

He also disclosed that the Attorney-General was finalising a report for Cabinet to compensate victims of electoral violence.

Democratic governance

President Mahama commended the Electoral Commission of Ghana, security agencies, political parties and civil society organisations for their roles in ensuring a peaceful election, but emphasised the need for further reforms.

“Democracy should not be a winner-takes-all system. We must invest in civic education, youth engagement and non-violent political participation,” he said.

While acknowledging the impact of the Vigilantism and Related Offences Act (2019, Act 999) in reducing political violence, he stressed the need for stronger measures to address grievances and ensure fairness in institutions.

Inclusive governance

The President urged participants to ensure the dialogue’s recommendations, covering electoral integrity, misinformation, youth engagement and media responsibility, were forwarded to relevant institutions, including the Constitutional Review Committee, for implementation.

Quoting Nelson Mandela, he said: “Great anger and violence can never build a nation.”

He called for a rejection of divisive politics and a renewed commitment to national unity.

“As President, I reaffirm my dedication to preserving Ghana’s peace and upholding the dignity of every citizen. Let this dialogue mark a new chapter of cooperation and progress,” he declared.

The event brought together political leaders, religious groups, civil society organisations and development partners to evaluate the 2024 polls and propose measures for more credible future elections.

Winner takes all

In his welcome address, the Chairman of the NPC Governing Board, Most Rev. Emmanuel Kofi Fianu, stressed the need for participants to critically reflect on the role of political parties in restraining their members and cultivating democratic tolerance.

“Our democracy must never be reduced to a winner-takes-all contest where the stakes are so high that violence becomes an option,” he said.

Most Rev. Fianu called for more investment in civic education and youth political dialogue.

Summon EC Over Ablekuma North Re-run Decision – Minority

0

Alexander Afenyo-Markin

The Minority in Parliament has raised serious concerns over the Electoral Commission’s (EC) decision to rerun parliamentary election in 19 polling stations within the Ablekuma North Constituency, describing the move as inconsistent and politically suspicious.

In a spirited address to the House, the Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, called for the EC to be summoned before Parliament to explain the rationale behind what he described as a sudden U-turn.

He said the Commission’s decision contradicts earlier assurances that it had completed the collation of results in the constituency and only required security clearance to declare a winner.

Mr. Afenyo-Markin questioned whether the EC was succumbing to political pressure, particularly from the National Democratic Congress (NDC), following public threats by its National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, to remove the EC Chairperson and her deputies.

“When it is clear that the EC was on course to complete this process, we are being told today that there is going to be a rerun in some polling stations. It is unfair, it is unjust,” the Minority Leader said.

He cited a precedent in the Dome-Kwabenya Constituency, where the EC relied on tally sheets to declare results despite outstanding polling stations. “Mr. Speaker, today we have a member in this chamber from Dome-Kwabenya because when it was left with a few polling stations, the EC relied on tally cards,” he noted.

Recounting a briefing by a Deputy EC Chairperson to Parliament, Mr. Afenyo-Markin said the Commission had previously indicated that all that was needed to finalise the Ablekuma North results was security to collate results of the last three polling stations. “I ask a question: what has changed?” he queried.

He warned that the politicisation of electoral processes could set a dangerous precedent. “Today it may benefit you, but tomorrow it may be your turn,” he cautioned, urging Majority Members of Parliament (MPs) to support the call for the EC to brief Parliament. “We must not allow this,” he added.

Responding to the concerns, the Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga, defended the Electoral Commission, stating that the decision to rerun the 19 polling stations was based purely on procedural lapses.

According to Mr. Ayariga, the EC discovered that its own presiding officers at the affected stations failed to verify the results, making them unreliable. “The EC is saying that their own presiding officers did not verify the 19 polling stations, and because of that, those results cannot be used,” he explained.

He also pushed back against accusations of political interference. “Let us not politicise this and say that just because a National Chairman of a political party made a statement, the EC is intimidated. Why are you afraid?” he challenged the Minority.

Former Minister of Food and Agriculture, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, has emerged as the surprise contender in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer race, with his popularity surging by more than 15 percentage points in just two months – making him the fastest-rising candidate in the contest so far.

Govt to offer incentives for e-waste collection

0

The government is finalising processes to start implementing an incentive-based payment system to encourage the return of electronic waste (e-waste) to designated collection centres.

When operational, the programme will be part of a broader effort to manage e-waste effectively and promote a circular economy for electronic and electrical equipment.

This initiative aims to significantly reduce the environmental and health risks associated with improper e-waste disposal, such as pollution and contamination, and to promote sustainable waste management practices that prioritise human health and environmental protection.

It will be implemented by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), in collaboration with the Electrical and Electronic Waste Management Fund (E-Waste Fund), as a funding agency.

The Deputy Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the E-Waste Fund, Amos Blessing Amorse, who disclosed this to the Daily Graphic during an engagement with operators in the e-waste value chain in Accra last Thursday, stated that the programme, when fully operational, would help reduce environmental and health risks associated with improper e-waste disposal.

“These are ways of disposing of e-waste. In fact, in the coming days, what we want to do is that we will be collaborating with the EPA, where we will have bins for the collection of some of these fractions.

“A lot of people do not even know that when you have e-waste products in your house and you take them to certain designated centres, you are entitled to incentives.

This is something that is not known, and so, we want to introduce it to encourage people to return their e-waste,” he said.

The workshop

The workshop brought together actors across the electronic waste value chain, including representatives from academia, development partners, industry associations, recyclers and scrap dealers to validate a new guideline on engagement with stakeholders.

The engagement marks a major step in ensuring transparency, collaboration and clarity in how the fund interacts with its diverse partners and how those stakeholders, in turn, engage the fund.

The workshop created an opportunity for participants to review and provide feedback on the draft guidelines, which outline the channels, modalities and procedures for engagement between the fund and various stakeholder groups.

These include protocols for public consultation, information sharing, feedback mechanisms, and roles during project implementation.

Accountability

Mr Amorse stated that the validation of the guidelines was expected to pave the way for a more inclusive and accountable management system for the fund, especially as it scales up operations in line with Ghana’s environmental and development goals.

He said the fund was established under the Environmental Protection Act, 2025 (Act 1124) with a mandate to mobilise and disburse financial resources to support the sound management of electrical and electronic waste across Ghana.

Significant strides

The Head of Operations at the E-Waste Fund, Obed Boah, stated that the fund over the past year had made significant strides in implementing pilot projects, awareness campaigns and financing mechanisms aimed at reducing the harmful environmental and public health impacts of e-waste.

He said as part of its institutional strengthening, the fund has developed a set of engagement guidelines to streamline communication, roles and expectations with its stakeholders.

He added that the E-Waste Fund remained committed to working hand in hand with both formal and informal sector actors to ensure that the country’s growing electronic waste challenge was tackled sustainably and equitably.

I took the land my late friend and I bought, now strange things are happening

File photo of a worried man File photo of a worried man

Dear GhanaWeb,

I lost a close friend last year in a tragic road accident on the way to Kumasi. Before his passing, he entrusted me with GH₵200,000 for a piece of land we had planned to buy and share between us.

The land cost GH₵300,000, and I was supposed to add GH₵100,000, take one-third of the land, and he would take two-thirds. We were scheduled to meet the landowner the weekend after, but he died before that could happen.

His wife wasn’t aware of this plan, he had intended to surprise her with the land and a building project the following year.

As far as I know, no one else knew either. His passing hurt deeply, but despite the grief, I went ahead and bought the land. It was in a prime location, and I didn’t want to miss the opportunity.

I waited for about three months to see if anyone, his wife or family, would bring it up, but no one did. That seemed to confirm what he told me: he had kept it secret. So, I began working on the land myself.

But now, I’m beginning to question everything. Since starting the project, things have been going wrong. Workers ran off with my money. Thieves stole my materials. My house was robbed three months ago. My son has been in the hospital since May. I even mistakenly sent out almost GH₵80,000 in a wrong transaction.

It’s been one setback after another.

At first, I thought I could handle it all, but now I wonder: could this be spiritual? Could my friend’s spirit be upset? Or is it just a string of bad luck?

I’ve thought about seeing a spiritual person for help, but part of me feels the right thing might be to give his wife a portion of the land, maybe a quarter. I know it’s less than what her husband was due, but at least it’s something.

Still, I’m scared of the questions. What if she asks why I never mentioned this before? What if it brings drama to both our lives? Part of me wants to just walk away from the land and leave it all behind.

What do you advise I do?

This timely payment reaffirms Ghana’s commitment to macroeconomic stability, prudent debt management, and constructive engagement with external creditors,” the statement said.

The ministry further noted that this development is expected to positively influence Ghana’s credit ratings trajectory in the coming months, as it demonstrates continued discipline in debt servicing post-restructuring.

It added that this will also boost investor confidence in Ghana’s sovereign credit profile and economic recovery programme, while supporting foreign exchange market stability, as the debt service has been factored into the Bank of Ghana’s reserves and liquidity management strategy.

Central Nairobi sealed off ahead of Kenyan protests

0

Key roads into Nairobi city centre have been blocked Key roads into Nairobi city centre have been blocked

Kenya’s security forces have blocked all major roads leading into central Nairobi, ahead of planned nationwide protests.

Much of the city centre is deserted, with businesses shut and a heavy security presence on the streets. Some schools have advised students to stay at home.

Hundreds of early-morning commuters and overnight travellers were stranded at checkpoints, some located more than 10km (six miles) from the city centre, with only a few vehicles allowed through.

Within the city, roads leading to key government sites – including the president’s official residence, State House, and the Kenyan parliament – are barricaded with razor wire.

In a statement issued on Sunday evening, the police said it was their constitutional duty to protect lives and property while maintaining public order.

Monday’s protests, dubbed Saba Saba (Swahili for 7 July), commemorate the 1990s struggle for multiparty democracy in Kenya.

These demonstrations have been organised primarily by young people, demanding good governance, greater accountability, and justice for victims of police brutality. They are the latest in a wave of anti-government protests that began last year.

On 25 June, at least 19 people were killed and thousands of businesses looted and destroyed in a day of nationwide protests that were being held in honour of those killed in last year’s anti-tax protests.

Recent demonstrations have turned violent, with reports of infiltration by “goons”, who are accused of looting and attacking protesters. Civil society groups allege collusion between these groups and the police – accusations the police have strongly denied.

On Sunday, an armed gang attacked the headquarters of a human rights NGO in Nairobi. The Kenya Human Rights Commission had been hosting a press conference organised by women calling for an end to state violence ahead of Monday’s protests.

This year marks the 35th anniversary of the original Saba Saba protests – a key moment that helped usher in multiparty democracy in Kenya after years of one-party rule.

The response by the then government under President Daniel arap Moi was brutal. Many protesters were arrested, while at least 20 people were reportedly killed.

Since then, Saba Saba has come to symbolise civic resistance and the fight for democratic freedom in Kenya.

Tips to avoid romance scams

Financial scams are evolving, with some of the most dangerous ones no longer starting with a cold call or phishing email, but a conversation that feels personal. Romantic financial scams (or romance scams), often disguised as genuine connections, are costing everyday South Africans millions.

In a growing trend locally, reminiscent of what viewers saw in the Netflix documentary The Tinder Swindler, scammers use charm, digital intimacy and emotional manipulation to swindle unsuspecting victims out of thousands of rands.

Ester Ochse, product head of FNB Integrated Advice, warns that these scams are on the rise, particularly targeting people who are active on dating platforms or those who engage regularly on social media.

“Romance scams are not just about emotional manipulation; they’re calculated financial heists. Using strategies such as social engineering, scammers build trust over weeks or months, only to strike when you least expect it, often under the guise of a crisis or business opportunity,” Ochse says.

Some of the behavioral red flags to lookout for:

  • Too good to be true: Overly polished profiles, instant emotional connections and sudden promises of a lavish lifestyle.
  • Urgency and secrecy: Claims of emergencies or opportunities that require immediate funds or a request to make use of your bank account, often with instructions not to tell family or friends.
  • Distant relationships: Scammers often claim to be working abroad, or in remote areas, to avoid face to face meetings.
  • Requests for money: These start small (airtime, data, food) and escalate to large sums for travel, investments, or emergencies.

These scams don’t just empty out your bank account; they can derail your long-term financial goals or implicate you in other fraudulent activities,” adds Ochse. “And during a time when many South Africans are trying to build financial resilience, every cent counts.”

A growing concern in South Africa and globally

Online romance scams are becoming more common as more people look for love online. In 2022, South Africans were scammed out of over R125m by dating scammers, according to the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research.

And in 2024, commercial crime rose by 18%, with romance scams playing a leading role in that increase, according to the SAPS. These figures highlight just how important it is to stay alert and protect yourself when building relationships online.

How to stay safe

Ochse urges consumers to treat new digital relationships like you would treat your online banking password or PIN – never share it with anyone.

Ettienne Fourie, head of fraud for retail at FNB adds: “We strongly encourage people to always remain vigilant and cautious to mitigate the chance of these fraudulent incidents materialising. Customers need to be aware that fraudsters are constantly coming up with new ways to deceive you to ultimately defraud you, including the use of romantic relationships. If something seems too good to be true, it usually is.”

“Love is not a financial plan,” says Ochse. “If someone you’ve never met in person asks for money, step back and ask yourself why. In many cases, the person on the other side of the screen is playing the long game. Don’t be swindled, your heart might recover but your finances may not,” adds Ochse.

Customers are encouraged to use their banking channels to immediately report any suspicious activity or unauthorised transactions in their bank accounts, for immediate action to help protect their money.

NPP Confirms Participation in Ablekuma North Rerun Despite Objections

0

Npp

Former Okaikoi North MP Issah Fuseini has stated the New Patriotic Party (NPP) will fully contest the Electoral Commission’s upcoming parliamentary rerun in Ablekuma North Constituency.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s The Big Issue on July 5, Fuseini dismissed speculation of a boycott, declaring: “We’ll not boycott this election.” His comments directly countered suggestions the party might withdraw from the process.

This assurance comes against the backdrop of the NPP’s public rejection of the EC’s rerun decision days earlier. Deputy General Secretary Haruna Mohammed had expressed disappointment, asserting no consensus was reached during stakeholder consultations. In a Citi FM Eyewitness News interview, Mohammed stated: “Our representatives were at the meeting… there was no such agreement with the EC,” citing the EC’s own release acknowledging party disagreements.

The party maintains its objection to the rerun’s validity across 19 polling stations while committing to participate. Fuseini framed the decision to contest as consistent with the NPP’s character, rejecting the National Democratic Congress’ speculation about a potential boycott.

Ken Leads NPP Flagbearer Race With 51.4% – Survey

0

Kennedy Agyapong

A recent survey conducted by Sanity Africa, a Pan-African civil society organisation, has put Kennedy Ohene Agyapong ahead of all potential candidates in the upcoming opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer race, securing 51.4% of the votes among delegates.

He is followed by former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia with 42.2%, while former Minister of Food and Agriculture, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, and former Education Minister, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum trail with 3.1% and 3.0% respectively.

The survey, conducted between April and June 2025, assessed the voting intentions of delegates across four key demographic categories: gender, religion, age bracket, and employment status.

Regionally, Mr. Agyapong, former Member of Parliament for Assin Central, leads in 10 out of the 16 regions, while Dr. Bawumia is favoured in six. The Savannah and Upper East regions show a tight race between the two frontrunners.

In the Ashanti Region, Dr. Adutwum performed notably well, receiving 9.5%, while Dr. Acheampong’s best performance was in his home region of Eastern with 13.7%.

Gender and Religious Dynamics

In terms of gender dynamics, Dr. Bawumia leads among male delegates with 48.9%, compared to Agyapong’s 42.4%. Dr. Acheampong and Dr. Adutwum follow with 6.1% and 2.6% respectively. Conversely, Mr. Agyapong commands a significant lead among female delegates, garnering 57.8% support compared to Dr. Bawumia’s 37.1%.

On religion, 52.8% of Muslim respondents expressed support for Dr. Bawumia, while 43.1% preferred Mr. Agyapong. Among non-believers and traditionalists, Kennedy Agyapong led with 55.1% versus Dr. Bawumia’s 40.6%. Christian respondents showed a strong preference for Mr. Agyapong, with 61.6% indicating support, highlighting the role of shared faith in leadership choices.

Age-Based Trends

Age demographics reveal that Dr. Bawumia resonates more with middle-aged voters (40–55 years), leading Mr. Agyapong by over three percentage points – 49.7% to 46.3%. Among mature voters (55 years and above), Dr. Bawumia maintains a nearly 10-point lead.

However, Mr. Agyapong dominates among younger delegates under 40, with 63% support compared to Dr. Bawumia’s 33.5%. In this age group, Dr. Acheampong emerges as a distant third, while Adutwum gains less than 1% support.

Employment Status and Grassroots Support

The survey categorised employment status into four segments: full-time employed, self-employed/business people (including market women, artisans, farmers, and traders), unemployed, and students.

Among full-time employees, the report said Dr. Bawumia leads with 53.8% support, ahead of Mr. Agyapong at 41.9%. Across all employment segments, Dr. Bryan Acheampong consistently ranks third, averaging 4.3% of voter preference.

The self-employed group – including traders, market women, and artisans – strongly supports Mr. Agyapong, giving him 55.5% compared to Dr. Bawumia’s 39.5%. Kennedy Agyapong also leads decisively among students (58.9% vs. 32.7%) and the unemployed (52.8% vs. 39%).

These trends mirror the age-based analysis, where younger delegates—more likely to be students or unemployed—overwhelmingly favour Mr. Agyapong.

Broader Implications

The survey highlighted distinct demographic patterns. Dr. Bawumia’s strongholds include Muslim delegates, adult males (aged 40–55), and full-time employed voters. Mr. Agyapong, meanwhile, draws his strongest support from Christian delegates, women, youth (under 40), students, the unemployed, and the self-employed—segments often seen as the party’s grassroots and the demographic future of the country.

Mr. Agyapong’s appeal to younger and economically aspirational voters, according to the survey, may indicate a growing desire for change, fresh leadership, or a more populist direction within the NPP.

Dr. Acheampong ranks third across most categories, while Dr. Adutwum performs slightly better among older and Christian voters.

Bryan Acheampong’s Popularity Surges –

0

Bryan Acheampong

Former Minister of Food and Agriculture, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, has emerged as the surprise contender in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer race, with his popularity surging by more than 15 percentage points in just two months – making him the fastest-rising candidate in the contest so far.

According to a new survey by the Future Governance Analytics Project (FGAP), Dr. Acheampong’s support jumped from 12.7% in April to 28.1% by June 2025. This dramatic 15.4-point rise positions him as a strong third force behind former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and ex-Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong.

While Bryan’s numbers are rising, the two front-runners are witnessing steady declines, according to the survey. Dr. Bawumia has lost 9.2 points, while Mr. Agyapong is down by 7.8. The survey said this suggests a growing appetite within the NPP for a fresh face and a new direction.

“This is no longer a two-horse race,” one party insider was quoted as saying, and added, “Bryan Acheampong’s momentum is real, and he’s quickly turning doubters into believers.”

Dr. Acheampong’s rising popularity has been credited to a targeted grassroots strategy, focusing on direct engagement with delegates, party foot soldiers, and regional stakeholders.

Unlike his opponents, whose campaigns are more public and high-profile, Dr. Acheampong has focused on behind-the-scenes consultations that are quietly reshaping perceptions, the survey indicated.

It added that the Abetifi MP is presenting himself as a technocrat with real-world governance and business experience. His campaign emphasises competence, unity, and results, setting him apart from the more polarising tones of his rivals.

While Mr. Agyapong draws on populist fervor and Dr. Bawumia leans on his vice-presidential record, Dr. Acheampong positions himself as the “operator” who can stabilise the party and government, according to the report.

The survey also pointed to his experience as a Cabinet Minister and entrepreneur as central to his message, indicating that supporters say he blends political insight with private-sector efficiency, making him appealing to both party elites and the grassroots.

Key Endorsements

The report also noted key endorsement by MP for Mpraeso, Davis Ansah Opoku, and former Asante Akim North MP, Andy Appiah-Kubi, as a signal to a growing coalition of younger MPs and party veterans rallying behind his candidacy.

The survey indicated that the surge in Bryan’s numbers is also energising younger delegates and segments of the party who are calling for generational change.

With the NPP preparing for what many see as a critical 2028 general election, some believe Dr. Acheampong represents a bridge between the party’s past and future, the survey indicated.

It, however, acknowledged that challenges remain, with Dr. Bawumia still commanding strong institutional backing and a broad national profile.

Mr. Kennedy Agyapong, it said, continues to draw significant grassroots enthusiasm. The survey stated that as the race intensifies ahead of the 2026 primaries, internal alliances, regional loyalties, and strategic decisions will prove decisive, but for now, “Bryan Acheampong’s star is rising—and fast.”

From underdog to contender, his popularity surge is changing the narrative within the NPP, and possibly the future of the party itself, the survey asserted.

Armed robbers shoot 4 passengers at Buduatta Junction, one suspect arrested

0

Four passengers are currently receiving treatment at the Winneba Trauma and Specialist Hospital after suspected armed robbers opened fire on a commercial vehicle at Buduatta Junction along the Kasoa-Winneba Highway. One of the assailants has been arrested by the police.

The attack occurred at dawn around 1:00am when the robbers blocked the highway and began robbing commuters at gunpoint.

A Toyota Hiace minibus, which was carrying passengers, came under fire when the driver attempted to stop.

Four passengers sustained gunshot wounds during the incident.

Police say this is part of a pattern of armed robberies in the Gomoa East District, particularly between May and June this year, with victims previously attacked around Potsin Junction and Okyereko Junction.

Due to increased police checkpoints in those areas, the robbers are suspected to have relocated their operations to Buduatta Junction.

According to the Central East Regional Police Command, officers from the Formed Police Unit (FPU) and the Kasoa Divisional SWAT team responded swiftly to the scene.

The wounded passengers were rushed to the hospital, and the affected vehicle was escorted to the Dominase District Police Command.

While returning from the operation, officers encountered two suspicious individuals near the Onion Market around 2:30 a.m. One fled into the bush, but the other was arrested.

Upon search, three mobile phones belonging to the passengers were found on him, and he was positively identified by both the driver and some of the passengers.

The arrested suspect has since been transferred to the Central East Regional Police Command for further interrogation, while all four victims remain hospitalized.

Meanwhile, officers at the Gomoa Dominase District Police Command have raised concerns about inadequate resources.

They say the station lacks vehicles and sufficient personnel to effectively combat the increasing robberies in the area.

They are appealing to the government and the Inspector General of Police to urgently address these challenges to help safeguard lives and property.

Ghana Grows movie premiere ignites new thinking among youth in Ashaiman

0

The Ashaiman community came alive on Saturday, 5th July, as hundreds of young people gathered for the premiere of three youth-led short films under the Ghana Grows Program. The event, a partnership between the Mastercard Foundation and the Springboard Road Show Foundation, with creative direction from Meraki Arts Africa, utilised the power of storytelling to redefine how young Ghanaians perceive agriculture and agribusiness.

The films, written and produced by Meraki Arts, boldly challenges long-held stereotypes around agriculture and ATVET (Agricultural Technical and Vocational Education and Training), while spotlighting real-life stories of transformation and purpose.

Describing the evening, Comfort Ocran, Executive Director of the Springboard Road Show Foundation, said:

“This was more than a film premiere. It was a turning point, proof that stories can unlock confidence, reshape mindsets, and inspire a new generation to see agriculture and ATVET as creative, fulfilling, and dignified career options.”

Celebrated actor Adjetey Anann, who appeared in the series, praised the energy and insight the young filmmakers brought to the screen. “It’s more than entertainment, it’s about identity, dignity, and the future we’re building together,” he said.

The premiere drew participation from youth across Ashaiman and beyond, along with media houses, creative industry leaders, and key stakeholders. Following the screenings, a lively panel discussion offered the cast and production team a platform to share their journey and reflections on storytelling as a tool for mindset change.

Ashaiman was chosen for its vibrant youth population and track record of community-led success stories. Its energy and engagement captured the very essence of Ghana Grows, to spark real change where it matters most.

Led by the Springboard Road Show Foundation and funded by the Mastercard Foundation, the Ghana Grows Program continues to make strides nationwide by promoting agriculture and ATVET as modern, viable, and respected career paths for Ghana’s youth. With support from creative and technical collaborators such as Meraki Arts Africa, Lyme Haus, and others, the program remains committed to mindset shift, skills development, and youth empowerment.

Ablekuma North Parliamentary: NPP Rejects EC’s Re-run

0

Justin Kodua Frimpong

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has rejected the Electoral Commission’s (EC) decision to rerun elections in 19 polling stations within the Ablekuma North Constituency, threatening legal action if the EC fails to comply with the directive of the High Court.

At a press conference last Thursday, the NPP General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, stated that only three polling stations remain uncollated out of 62, as per the court’s orders. He stressed that the EC had already verified and certified 59 of the 62 results and had previously indicated there was no legal barrier to completing the collation of the final three.

“The EC’s sudden U-turn to rerun 19 polling stations is not only shocking but unlawful,” Mr. Kodua said, adding that the NPP “completely rejects” the Commission’s decision.

He further referenced a June 19 appearance before Parliament by the EC Deputy Commissioner, Dr. Bossman Asare, who confirmed that only three polling station results remained outstanding.

Mr. Kodua questioned the EC’s basis for expanding the number to 19, especially when both NPP and National Democratic Congress (NDC) agents had approved the scanned results used during the collation.

“Even if we were to accept a rerun, it ought to be in the three polling stations outstanding. How did the EC suddenly decide that 19 stations were unverifiable?” he queried.

The NPP General Secretary accused the EC of engaging in double standards and acting contrary to agreements with both political parties to collate the results of the remaining three stations. He cited the example of the Glory Land Hotel polling station (C161205A), which is among the three pending but omitted from the EC’s list of 19 for the proposed rerun.

He emphasised that no provision in Ghana’s Constitution, PNDC Law 284, or Public Elections Regulations (CI 127) gives the EC the authority to rerun elections it has already conducted and collated.

“In fact, we have evidence that some presiding officers from these 19 polling stations were present at the collation centre to verify their results,” he said. “Under the EC’s own rules, unverifiable results cannot be included – yet these were.”

Kodua added that the EC’s claim that results from the 19 polling stations were not verified by presiding officers is “misconceived” and inconsistent with its earlier communications.

He reiterated that NPP’s parliamentary candidate, Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie, won the Ablekuma North seat with 34,613 votes, ahead of the NDC’s 34,199, based on pink sheet evidence.

“No amount of arm-twisting can change this fact,” he stressed, confirming that NPP lawyers had been instructed to challenge the EC’s decision in court.

He urged the EC to respect the High Court’s orders and complete the collation process. “The EC must act within the confines of the law. It is not above the law, nor does it have the discretion to do as it pleases,” Kodua said.

Court jails man for attacking and robbing pregnant woman

0

The Ho Circuit Court has sentenced a 25-year-old man to 19 years imprisonment in hard labour for attacking and robbing a pregnant woman of her cash and cellular phone.

Paul Avortide, alias “Tinted,” was convicted on his own plea of guilt by the Court presided over by Mr Osman Abdul Hakeem.

His accomplice is one Harmony Nbonu, 23, also known as “Arab Money”, who was acquitted and discharged by the Court.

Avortide has since been handed over to the Ho Regional Prison authorities to begin his prison term.

The Police told the Court that Avortide, on May 21, 2025, at about 0400 hours, at Tsikpota near New Housing, Ho, wielding a machete, threatened Madam Ogechi Chidiebere, a Nigerian, the complainant and victim, resident in Ho.

Avortide robbed the victim of her GH¢3,000.00 and Tecno Spark 30c mobile phone valued GH¢2,500.00. She was on her way to antenatal care at the Ho Municipal Hospital.

Prosecution said on June 19, 2025, at about 1800 hours, the Regional Police Intelligence team arrested Nbonu at the Ho main Market, in possession of the stolen phone.

During interrogations, he named Avortide as the one who sold the phone to him at GH¢ 850.00.

Police said coordinated efforts between them and the Nbonu led to the arrest of Avortide at Matse, a suburb of Ho.

The Court was told that after Police investigations, Avortide was charged with the offence of robbery, Contrary to Section 149 of the Criminal Offences ACT. 1960 (ACT 29) as amended by the Criminal Offences (Amendment) ACT, 2003 (ACT 646) whilst Nbonu was charged with the offence of dishonestly receiving Contrary to Section 146 of the Criminal Offences ACT, 1960 (ACT 29).

However, after the trial, Nbonu was found innocent.

Watch the emotional scenes as Agradaa’s church holds first service after her 15-year jail sentence

Many members of the church could not hold back their emotions play videoMany members of the church could not hold back their emotions

It was a deeply emotional atmosphere at the Heaven Way Church on Sunday, July 6, 2025, as members gathered for their first service without their founder and leader, repented priestess Evangelist Patricia Oduro Koranteng, popularly known as Nana Agradaa, following her recent 15-year jail sentence.

With their spiritual head absent, the congregation was led by Nana Agradaa’s husband, Pastor Angel Asiamah, who stepped in to deliver the sermon.

Pastor Asiamah was seen wiping tears from his face multiple times as he led the service.

As he encouraged the congregation to remain steadfast and hopeful, many members could not hold back their emotions. Some were seen wiping their faces, while others lay prostrate on the floor in fervent prayer, visibly shaken by the situation.

“Let us continue to pray without ceasing,” Pastor Asiamah urged.

Nana Agradaa has been convicted for 15 years at an Accra Circuit Court presided by Justice Evelyn Amoah, on charges of charlatanic advertisement and defrauding by false pretences.

Agradaa’s conviction stems from a viral video from 2022, in which she promised to double money for individuals who attended an all-night service at her church in Weija.

Background

Agradaa was arrested on Sunday, October 9, 2022, following a series of public complaints.

“The police have arrested Patricia Asiedua, alias Nana Agradaa, following allegations of a money-doubling scam levelled against her by some members of the public. The suspect is currently assisting with police investigations,” a statement from the Ghana Police Service read at the time.

The arrest followed an all-night church service held on October 7, 2022, during which Agradaa allegedly promised financial returns to attendees.

Several congregants later accused her of fraud, claiming they were asked to give her money with the assurance it would be doubled, but received nothing in return.

Many of the victims shared their experiences online, alleging that after collecting their money, Agradaa simply dismissed them from the premises without fulfilling her promise.

These reports led to public outcry and prompted police action.

Following her arrest, the police urged anyone who had been affected by the alleged scheme to report to the Accra Regional Police Command to assist with ongoing investigations.

Our forests invaluable, let’s protect it – Akufo-Addo

0

Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is now the immediate past President of Ghana Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is now the immediate past President of Ghana

In July 2024, the then President of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, called on Ghanaians to protect the nation’s forests, describing them as invaluable assets.

He noted that while forests offer ecological, economic, and cultural benefits, they are increasingly under threat from illegal logging, agricultural expansion, and climate change.

Akufo-Addo made these remarks at the International Conference on Afforestation and Reforestation held in Brazzaville.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has emphasised the importance of Africa’s forests to its people, describing them as invaluable.

He said that although the forests provide ecological, economic, and cultural benefits essential to our way of life, they are threatened by illegal logging, agricultural expansion, and climate change.

At the closing ceremony of the International Conference on Afforestation and Reforestation in Brazzaville, on Friday, July 5, 2024, he encouraged leaders to take decisive action to implement sustainable forest management policies, combat illegal activities, and support the livelihoods of communities dependent on these ecosystems.

He suggested that investing in research and technology to enhance the understanding of forest dynamics is also crucial for improving reforestation efforts.

Making a case for Ghana, he said the West African country has made significant strides in forest restoration, adding that since 2016, “we have established over one million hectares of forest plantations, enrichment planting, and native tree seedling projects.”

These efforts, he said, have created rural employment for thousands and supported food security through agroforestry initiatives.

Nana Akufo-Addo further stated that Ghana’s Green Ghana Day Initiative, launched in 2021, has seen the planting of over 52 million trees in just four years, thanks to the enthusiastic participation of citizens, schools, and the private sector.

Despite these achievements, he admitted that much work remains.

“We need increased and dedicated financing to sustain our efforts. The tropical domain, home to nearly half of the world’s forests, cannot fund the required $393 billion annually alone. We must pool resources and incentivize local communities to protect forests,” he said.

He encouraged the gathering to think globally but act locally, prioritising environmental stewardship alongside development.

He indicated that Ghana remains committed to leading in forest conservation and restoration, thus helping to ensure a sustainable future for all.

Captain Smart Shócks Ghanaians, Explains Why Nana Agradaa Will Not Spend 15 Years In Jail

“Let’s Get the Facts Straight”—Captain Smart Breaks Down Nana Agradaa’s Sentence

On Friday morning, July 4, 2025, Onua Maakye host Captain Smart took to the airwaves to set the record straight on a hot topic: the sentencing of Evangelist Patricia Asiedua, better known as Nana Agradaa.

According to him, most media headlines are getting it wrong.

“People are shouting ‘15 years!’ but they’re not telling you the full story,” Captain Smart said firmly. He explained that while the court did issue three five-year sentences against Agradaa, they’re running concurrently—so she’ll only serve five years, not 15.

“Fifteen years is not really fifteen years,” he emphasized. “The internet is confusing people.”

Captain Smart didn’t stop there. He revealed that Agradaa’s lawyers are already preparing an appeal, and he floated the possibility of a presidential pardon—possibly from John Mahama, if he returns to power. He made a passionate plea, pointing out that Agradaa is a mother with a young child, and that her presence in the child’s life should be considered.

“Every child deserves their mother,” he said, clearly moved.

The original conviction was delivered on July 3, 2025, with Agradaa found guilty of defrauding people by falsely promising spiritual money multiplication.

The debate around her sentence continues—but Captain Smart wants people to focus on the facts, not the noise.

Ghana Represents at Cabo Verde’s 50th Independence Celebration

0

Okudzeto Ablakwa

North Tongu MP Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa represented Ghana at Cabo Verde’s 50th independence anniversary, acting as President John Mahama’s envoy.

In a social media reflection, Ablakwa described the participation as a “profound honour,” emphasizing the significance of Ghana-Cabo Verde historical ties.

According to his official statement, Ablakwa highlighted Ghana’s foundational role in Cabo Verde’s liberation struggle, noting Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah’s support for freedom fighter Amílcar Lopes Cabral during the anti-colonial movement against Portuguese rule. The MP referenced Nkrumah’s iconic quote: “We prefer self-government with danger to servitude in tranquility,” underscoring shared liberation values.

The diplomatic engagement reinforced bilateral relations between the two nations amid ongoing foreign policy collaborations.

Bryan Acheampong’s campaign gathers momentum

0

Accra, July 7, GNA – Dr. Bryan Acheampong has jolted the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Presidential race.

From a modest 12.7 per cent support base in April, Acheampong now commands about 28.1 percent, charting an eye-catching 15.4-point leap that catapaults him firmly into the top tier of contenders. Once seen as a long shot in a field dominated by the familiar figures of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and Kennedy Agyapong, Bryan is now quickly reshaping the dynamics of the race.

A statement copied to the Ghana News Agency in Accra on Monday said both front-runners were losing ground.

It alleged that Bawumia’s support had dipped by 9.2 points, while Kennedy Agyapong was down by 7.8.

“The losses may reflect growing dissatisfaction among delegates, shifting loyalty dynamics, or simply the unpredictability that comes when the party base is no longer content with business as usual. What is clear is that Bryan is not just catching up, he is making significant strides”.

The survey, according to the statement conducted by the Future Governance Analytics Project (FGAP), comes at a pivotal moment as the party’s internal structures begin to mobilize ahead of the 2026 primaries.

It said while other aspirants – including Kwabena Agyapong, Boakye Agyarko, and Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum – continue to poll below the 3 per cent  mark, Bryan’s rise had shifted conversations from “whether he can compete” to “whether he could win.”

The statement said with the  combination of strategy, timing, and message discipline, Acheampong had pivoted from conventional top-down politicking to a more deliberate grassroots engagement strategy, meeting quietly but consistently with delegates, regional influencers, and rank-and-file party members.

It said his narrative was one of competence and clarity, grounded in his background as a former Cabinet Minister, a successful entrepreneur, and the MP for Abetifi.

“He’s positioning himself as the “results man”, someone who understands the machinery of government, the language of business, and the practical frustrations of everyday Ghanaians.

“His technocratic tone and focus on unity and renewal set him apart from the more polarizing figures in the race. Unlike Kennedy Agyapong, who often leans on populist energy, or Bawumia, whose message is now burdened by incumbency, Bryan projects the image of a focused operator who can steady the ship and chart a new course”.

It said Acheampong’s rise had not happened in isolation.

“Strategic endorsements are playing a crucial role in amplifying his credibility. Notably, Davis Ansah Opoku (MP for Mpraeso) and former Asante Akim North MP Andy Appiah-Kubi have thrown their weight behind him, an indication that his campaign is gaining traction among both the party’s young guard and seasoned operatives”.

The statement said he was also  benefitting from the perception of momentum.

“In politics, numbers matter—but so does narrative. And Bryan’s is fast becoming the most compelling story of the race: the underdog-turned-contender whose ascent is not driven by noise, but by movement.

“It’s still early days. Flagbearer races – especially in the NPP – are long and unpredictable, often shaped in the final weeks by internal lobbying, regional alliances, and behind-the-scenes negotiations. Bawumia still has a formidable network and significant institutional backing. Kennedy Agyapong remains a charismatic campaigner with deep loyalty in the party’s grassroots.

But Bryan Acheampong has introduced a new and potent variable into the mix: momentum. And in politics, momentum can be contagious”.

The statement said the next few months would be decisive.

“Will Bryan consolidate his gains and expand beyond his early bases of support? Will his surge invite tougher scrutiny, internal sabotage, or coordinated resistance from the frontrunners’ camps? Can he maintain his positioning as the campaign’s disruptor while transitioning into a consensus builder?

“For now, the spotlight is firmly on him. What was once a two-horse race is now a three-way contest, and the man from Abetifi is not just making noise, he’s changing the narrative”.

The statement said if the trends continue,

Bryan Acheampong may not only be catching up, he could be writing the NPP’s next chapter.

It misleading and factually inaccurate to attribute ECG’s challenges to my leadership – Afenyo Markin

200,000 Children in Ghana have uncorrected refractive errors — Dr Agyemfra

Citi News report on plantain seller inspires NDC’s ‘No Fees Stress’ Policy

0

A report published on CitiNewsroom.com and Channel1News.com on October 24, 2024, which highlighted the plight of 20-year-old Fauzia Ali—a brilliant graduate of Serwaa Kesse Girls Senior High School in the Ahafo Region—did more than draw attention to her financial challenges.

It not only resolved her immediate burden but also inspired the then-opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to incorporate her story into a broader policy proposal in its manifesto.

Fauzia, who dreamed of becoming a medical doctor, excelled in the 2023 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), earning a distinction in Integrated Science. Her outstanding performance earned her admission into the six-year MBChB (Medicine) undergraduate programme at the University for Development Studies (UDS) in Tamale.

However, her path to medical school was nearly derailed due to financial constraints—until the report brought her situation to national attention.

Fauzia’s widowed mother, Zainab Ali, who supports the family through a modest roasted plantain business, was unable to raise the GH¢10,000 required for her daughter’s admission and initial expenses. With her earnings barely sufficient to meet the family’s daily needs, Zainab faced the painful reality of being unable to fund Fauzia’s dream of becoming a doctor.

Instead of preparing for medical school, Fauzia spent her days helping her mother sell roasted plantains in New Zongo, a vibrant community in the Asokore Mampong Municipality of the Ashanti Region. Though disheartened, she clung to hope—praying for a breakthrough that could change her future.

“There is no money for me to pursue the medicine programme I was admitted to at UDS,” Fauzia said at the time, her voice heavy with emotion. “I am pleading with anyone who can help me achieve my goal.”

The Citinewsroom.com and Channel1news.com report went viral with several individuals, corporate bodies and philanthropists, including the office of the 2024 Flagbearer of the NDC, now President, John Dramani Mahama, reaching out to offer support to Fauzia Ali.

Mr. Mahama subsequently met Ms. Fauzia Ali in Tamale during one of his campaigns ahead of the 2024 elections. He later met Fauzia’s mother in Kumasi during the same campaign rounds where he presented an amount of GH¢20,000 as his initial support and pledged to ensure the NDC Government gives her a scholarship to enable her to pursue her education should the party win power.

During the launch of the ‘No Fees Stress’ policy on Friday, July 4, 2025, at Koforidua, in the Eastern Region, President Mahama referenced Fauzia Ali’s story highlighted by Citinewsroom.com and Channel1news.com and said that the story pushed the NDC to include such a policy in its manifesto.

He explained, “There is a girl who received admission to the University of Development Studies, and her story was carried by social media. I am sure several of you would have seen it. She was sitting by her mother, and they were roasting plantains. And apparently, this girl had qualified for medicine at the University of Development Studies.

“But her mother didn’t have the money to pay the academic fees for her to register, and so, she had to sit by her mother to roast the plantain, hoping that they would be able to raise enough money.

“We looked out for her, found her and found her mother. So we took her to the University, we paid the academic fees for her, and we not only paid the academic fees for her, but we also asked UDS to give us her fees for the whole course, and they gave it to us. And we paid her fees until she finished University. So that was one of the stories that moved us to put into the manifesto the ‘No-Fee-Stress’ policy.”

During the launch of the ‘No Fees Stress’ Policy, President John Dramani Mahama announced the clearance of academic user fees for an initial 15,000 first-year tertiary students under the policy, which is a flagship, equity-based initiative aimed at eliminating financial barriers to tertiary education in Ghana.

Under the programme, the state will cover the academic-related fees of all first-year students enrolled in public tertiary institutions starting from the 2025 academic year.

The story of Fauzia Ali has undoubtedly made an impact not only on her life but the lives of many other students like her, whose academic dreams continue to be hindered by financial setbacks.

10 suspected landguards arrested by police

0

The Anti-Landguard Unit of the Ghana Police Service on Thursday arrested 10 suspected landguards who were allegedly terrorising residents of Ashongman Estates in the Ga East District of the Greater Accra Region.

The specialised unit, led by DSP Nafiu Shittu, carried out the operation at the Bank of Ghana (BoG) lands within the Ashongman Estates.

Included in the suspects who were arrested during the raid are Yussif Touffik, Chief Ali Ibrahim, Abdul Wajeed, Seidu Issah and Graham Smith.

The rest were Latiff Larry, Mohammed Omar, Emmanuel Mensah, Abdul Wallah, and Said Abdullai.

According to DSP Shittu, the suspects were part of a well-organised criminal group that has operated with impunity for several years.

He added that the raid was based on intelligence gathered from continuous complaints by residents about the activities of the gang.

DSP Shittu also indicated that his outfit would continue to ensure that lives and properties are protected, and make the area and country at large, very uncomfortable for criminals to operate in.

He added that the operation was part of a broader national strategy to eliminate landguard activities, restore peace, and secure landowners’ rights.

Residents have expressed joy over the arrests and commended the police for raiding the hideout of the landguards, whom they described as terrorists.

“We finally feel protected. These men have destroyed homes and lives for far too long,” Mr Isaac Ansah, one of the residents stated.

Watch hilarious moment SDA College of Education principal asked Mahama to dash him a vehicle

Guests and officials could not hold their laughter after the Principal of the SDA College of Education cunningly pleaded with President John Dramani Mahama to “dash him a vehicle” to replace his old one.

The hilarious exchange took place at the launch of President John Mahama’s No Fees Stress policy held at the SDA College of Education at Koforidua on July 4, 2025.

The principal, Prof Vincent Adzahlie-Mensah, while highlighting issues the college faces, and the urgent need for mobility support for principals, revealed that his official vehicle, a 2007 Nissan Patrol, is now 18 years old, prompting laughter from the attendees.

“We need vehicles for principals of colleges of education. The Minister of Education has promised to help us get those vehicles.

“Your Excellency, it will surprise you that the principal who is speaking to you came here in a 2007 registered Nissan Patrol vehicle. That vehicle is now 18 years old. I just think that it will be important for you to direct so that one vehicle will be left for the principal to drive home tomorrow,” he said.

In response to the principal’s request, President Mahama assured him and others that the Ministry of Education has already set plans in motion.

Mahama announced that in 2025, the government would be procuring 66-seater buses for tertiary institutions and 50 vehicles specifically for principals of colleges of education.

“Your principal will benefit from one vehicle… So, principal, we don’t need to leave any of the vehicles we brought behind. Yours is coming. Manage with the 18-year-old for the mean time,” the president assured him.

Speaking with journalists during a media encounter on Sunday, July 7, 2024, the former president said his administration will not tolerate the acquisition of state assets if given the nod in the upcoming December polls.

“Appointees and public office holders must change their attitudes. That is what we’re going to insist on. People that we appoint must be modest and humble, open to the people, and do things that will improve the lives of our young people. So, we’re going to hold them to a higher standard of service. You must not go and buy state property,” John Mahama declared.

“Anybody serving in my government will not be allowed to buy a state asset. Nobody serving in my government will buy a state asset. Vehicles, cars, buildings, land, or anything else, nobody serving in our government will be allowed to buy a state asset,” he emphasized.

Meanwhile, concerns have been raised about the acquisition and ownership of state assets by government officials. This has prompted the Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa to initiate a process to push a Private Members’ Bill preventing any government official or public office holder from acquiring state assets.

Ghanaians Remember Castro 11 Years After His Mysterious Disappearance

Today, July 6, 2025, marks exactly 11 years since popular Ghanaian musician Castro went missing at Ada. Many Ghanaians have taken to social media to remember him and share their thoughts about the tragic day he disappeared.

Castro, whose real name was Theophilus Tagoe, was one of the top musicians in Ghana at the time of his disappearance. He was known for hit songs like “Toffee”, “African Girls” and “Adonai Remix” with Sarkodie. His sweet voice and powerful stage presence made him a household name.

On July 6, 2014, Castro went on a holiday trip to Ada with his close friend, footballer Asamoah Gyan, and other friends. While at the Ada Estuary, Castro reportedly went on a jet ski ride with a young lady named Janet Bandu. Sadly, both of them went missing in the water and were never seen again.

Rescue teams searched for several days but could not find their bodies. The incident shocked the entire country. Many people were heartbroken and could not believe that someone as lively and talented as Castro could just disappear like that.

Under Ghana’s law, someone can only be declared legally dead if they have been missing for 7 years. That means Castro was declared legally dead on July 6, 2021. But even today, some Ghanaians still believe he might be alive somewhere.

On this 11th anniversary, fans and fellow musicians have shared pictures, videos, and messages on social media to honour his memory. Many say that Castro’s voice and music still live on and that he will never be forgotten.

MiDA to drive Grow24 with proven MCC models

The Millennium Development Authority (MiDA) is poised to play a central role in Ghana’s agricultural transformation by applying successful strategies from the $547 million Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Compact to the government’s new Grow24 initiative.

This was revealed by MiDA’s Chief Executive, Mr. Alexander Kofi-Mensah Mould, in an exclusive interview.

Grow24, recently launched by President John Dramani Mahama, is a bold agricultural policy under the broader “24hr+” development agenda.

At its heart is the Volta Economic Corridor project, which aims to irrigate over two million hectares of land for intensive, commercially viable farming.

MiDA, originally established to implement the U.S.-funded MCC Compact, will now take on an expanded role as a national delivery agency for agricultural transformation efforts.

According to Mr. Mould, MiDA’s broad experience in infrastructure, energy, and agro-industrial development makes it ideally suited to drive large-scale agricultural initiatives across the country.

“Through the MCC Compact, we developed proven, high-impact models ready for nationwide implementation,” he stated. “We’re now building on that foundation to support food security, economic diversification, and rural industrialization under Grow24.”

One of the key successes of the MCC Compact was its $189 million Agriculture Project, which included the Land Tenure Facilitation (LTF) Activity. This pilot program enhanced land tenure security, encouraged investment in agriculture, and boosted productivity.

Mr. Mould explained that core components from the Compact—such as land preparation, irrigation engineering, and integrated agronomic systems—will be adapted and scaled to meet Grow24’s ambitious targets.

He described ongoing efforts to clear and level land using precision methods, alongside the design of advanced irrigation systems tailored to various landscapes. These efforts combine agricultural science, economics, and engineering to build sustainable, large-scale farming enterprises.

The Volta Economic Corridor, seen as a flagship of the Grow24 policy, is expected to become a key food production hub, improve export capacity, and create thousands of jobs in rural communities.

MiDA’s role, Mr. Mould said, will be to provide the technical and managerial backbone necessary for the long-term success of the initiative.

“Grow24 represents a bold new vision for agricultural development in Ghana, and MiDA is fully prepared to deliver on that promise,” he concluded.

As Ghana embarks on this new chapter of agricultural growth, MiDA’s renewed mandate under Grow24 could transform the landscape of farming and agribusiness across the nation.
