Parliament declares Kpandai seat vacant after court orders rerun

0

Parliament has formally declared the Kpandai constituency seat vacant, clearing the way for a fresh election after a High Court ruling annulled the December 2024 parliamentary result.

In a letter dated 4 December, the Clerk to Parliament, Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, informed the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Jean Mensa, that the legislature was acting in compliance with a directive from the Tamale High Court.

Akan NPP Communications Officer endorses Dr Bawumia for 2028

By Daniel Agbesi Latsu

Kadjebi (O/R), Dec.8, GNA – The Communications Officer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Akan Constituency, Oti Region, Mr Frank Adjei-Worlanyo, has declared his support for Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as the Party’s preferred candidate for the 2028 presidential elections.

Mr Adjei-Worlanyo, speaking with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Kadjebi in the Oti Region, said Dr Bawumia, who served as Vice-President from 2017 to 2025, remained the most strategically positioned individual to lead the Party back to power, referencing what he described as a consistent historical pattern in Ghana’s Fourth Republic.

He explained that Ghana’s democratic journey since 1992 had been marked by peaceful transitions of power, often following a recurring trend in which candidates who lost previous elections later returned to win subsequent ones.

Tracing the electoral outcomes, he noted the transfer of power from former President Jerry John Rawlings to John Agyekum Kufuor in 2000; from Mr Kufuor to the late Professor John Evans Atta Mills in 2008; from President John Dramani Mahama to Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in 2016; and most recently, from President Akufo-Addo back to Mr Mahama in 2025.

According to him, these transitions suggested what he referred to as “an unbroken cycle” in which losing candidates eventually emerge victorious in later contests. He argued that this pattern now placed Dr Bawumia in a favourable position ahead of the 2028 general election.

Mr Adjei-Worlanyo said: “History shows that candidates who lose to an eventual president often return to win the next election. Dr Bawumia, having contested in 2024, stands as the next logical beneficiary of this democratic rhythm.”

He urged NPP delegates and stakeholders to consider this historical trajectory as they prepare for future internal Party decisions, emphasising that the Party stood to benefit from aligning with what he described as the “predictable rhythm” of Ghana’s electoral transitions.

He stated that Ghana’s democracy had matured into a system where power had consistently alternated between the two major political parties, reinforcing the need for strategic political planning grounded in historical precedent.

Mr Adjei-Worlanyo expressed confidence that if the trend continued, Dr Bawumia would be well positioned to lead the NPP to victory in 2028 and restore the Party to government.

Ghanaian comedian Jacinta Ocansey, popularly known as Jacinta, has expressed profound gratitude to Ghanaians, especially her fans, for supporting her just-ended concert.

In an exclusive interview with GhanaWeb’s Isaac Dadzie at the “Jacinta the 4runner” concert, held on December 7, 2025, Jacinta noted that her success in an industry dominated by men should serve as an inspiration for young girls.

According to her, the industry is saturated with negative news reports; therefore, young girls should draw motivation from her journey.

There’s nothing wrong with men making advances at women – Jacinta

“In a world where people don’t have much to hold on to, and where there’s a lot of negative, should I say press, there are many things that don’t motivate you. I think it is good to see a young girl living her dream, admire her, and thank God for her,” she said.

Jacinta further stated that Ghanaians, especially women, should be proud of her achievements.

“You don’t have to want to be like me, but this is my journey, just appreciate it. So, I think it’s good. It’s a good form of inspiration. So, what more can we expect from the lady?” she added.

IMANI files RTI request seeking full disclosure on SIM registration plan

0

Policy think tank IMANI Africa has filed a Right to Information (RTI) request demanding full disclosure on the government’s proposed nationwide SIM registration exercise, expected to commence in early 2026.

The request, submitted on Monday, December 8, 2025, to the Ministry of Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovations, seeks details on the legal framework, technical design, procurement processes, and data protection safeguards underpinning the initiative. IMANI said the request was formally received by the Minister’s secretary.

In its submission, IMANI requested information on the legal instruments authorising the new SIM registration regime, the technical and biometric verification architecture to be deployed, procurement records and vendor selection processes, as well as institutional oversight arrangements.

The think tank also demanded clarity on data protection and privacy safeguards for Ghanaians whose information would be captured.

IMANI cited growing public concern over the cost, governance and transparency of the planned exercise, particularly regarding the involvement of private vendors and the handling of citizens’ biometric data.

The RTI request invokes Article 21(1)(f) of the 1992 Constitution and the Right to Information Act, 2019 (Act 989), which guarantees the public’s right to access information held by public institutions.

According to IMANI, the request is aimed at promoting accountability and ensuring that the SIM registration exercise is conducted in the public interest, with adequate legal, technical and privacy protections in place.

Tariff hikes disrespectful and unjustified – TUC

0

Dr Ken Tweneboa Kodua, Vice Chair of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), has condemned the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) for announcing electricity and water tariff increases without exhausting negotiations with organised labour.

Speaking on Eyewitness News on Monday, December 8, Dr Kodua described the process as incomplete and disrespectful, revealing that the TUC had been working to establish a fair and realistic tariff structure for its members and that the decision taken by the PURC must be questioned.

He further stressed that the premature announcement of tariffs undermines the collaborative efforts between PURC and TUC, noting that such unilateral decisions could erode trust and compromise future engagement between the regulatory body and organised labour.

“The process and the procedure were not exhaustive. We were as a team trying to come up with a fair, realistic tariff that we could even explain to our members. That process was truncated, and this tariff was announced.

“That is not respectful and not in the best interest of fairness in our partnership with PURC. PURC, in its own wisdom, started engagement processes with TUC, and why they halted and chose to announce these tariffs without exhausting the process must be answered,” he stated.

In response to the announcement, organised labour has called for a suspension of the 9.86% increase in electricity tariffs and the 15.92% hike in water tariffs, scheduled to take effect from January 1, 2026.

Labour also pledged to resist any tariff increase that could negate the gains from the planned 2026 wage rise unless the government adjusts the proposed 9% wage increase to offset the additional burden on workers.

Dr John Kpikpi, Progressive Alliance of Ghana flagbearer for 2024 election Dr John Kpikpi, Progressive Alliance of Ghana flagbearer for 2024 election

The 2024 Presidential Candidate of the Progressive Alliance of Ghana (PAG), Dr John Kpikpi, has suggested that the poor WASSCE results recorded this year may be a more accurate reflection of Ghana’s educational performance, one that has long been concealed by widespread examination malpractice.

Speaking in an interview on Metro TV’s Good Afternoon Ghana programme, Dr Kpikpi said the latest results, which have sparked a national debate, should not surprise anyone who understands the depth of malpractice that has taken root in schools across the country.

He argued that for years, unethical practices during examinations have created an illusion of academic excellence.

Dr Kpikpi explained that many parents openly pay illegal fees to teachers and schools, who in turn collaborate with invigilators to influence exam outcomes.

According to him, this practice has become so entrenched that it has misled the nation into believing students were performing better than they actually were.

He commended the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) for what appears to be a renewed effort this year to clamp down on cheating, which he believes has exposed the true state of academic performance in the country.

Dr Kpikpi insisted that rather than lamenting the decline in results, stakeholders should confront the uncomfortable reality revealed by stricter supervision and use it as a turning point to address deep-seated problems in the education system.

“I wonder whether these results we’ve seen now are actually the real results that we shall be receiving all these years, but they have been masked by serious exam malpractice, which is entrenched and practised across this country.

“In most schools, parents happily pay money and schools receive money from parents to buy invigilators.

“In fact, it has become the norm. It looks like this year, WAEC found a way to dig in and tackle all of these, and the result is what is coming out without the mask on it.” He concluded with a firm observation.”

Absa and MEST Africa announce the 2025 winner for the MEST Africa Challenge

0

Absa, in partnership with the Meltwater Entrepreneurial School of Technology (MEST Africa), proudly announces Black Swan from Mauritius as the winner of the MEST Africa Challenge (MAC) 2025.

Launched in August 2025, this year’s Challenge attracted 828 leads and 313 applications across eight Absa markets. After progressing through the Top 20 and Top 10 stages, Black Swan has emerged as the overall winner.

The 2025 competition aligned closely with Absa’s innovation priorities, focusing on FinTech and strategic value-chain solutions that enhance financial inclusion and respond to evolving customer needs.

Black Swan, an AI-driven company using alternative data to build credit scores for Africa’s unbanked population, stood out with a solution that demonstrates clear market relevance, solid product market fit, and strong potential to scale with meaningful impact and value.

“Congratulations to Black Swan. This year’s Challenge brought forward solutions that reflect how people and businesses want to manage their financial lives in a simpler, more accessible, and more integrated way. Black Swan secured the winning position because their solution meets a clear need and shows potential to complement the services we provide across our markets.

The Challenge has revealed just how much opportunity exists to enhance customer experiences through thoughtful innovation,” says Tawanda Chatikobo, Head of Digital for Absa Regional Operations (ARO), Retail and Business Banking.

Across the continent, FinTech start-ups are tackling persistent challenges, from access to finance and digital payments, to supporting small businesses across largely informal economies. While their strength lies in deep local insight, many lack access to the scale, infrastructure, and institutional reach needed to grow.

Ashwin Ravichandran, Portfolio Advisor and MAC Lead at MEST Africa, added: “Congratulations to Black Swan and all ten finalists of this year’s MEST Africa Challenge. This year showed a clear shift toward building for scale; founders are prioritising compliance, interoperability, and cross-border readiness from day one.

FinTech is now powering real sectors like agriculture, energy, and trade, and that’s where lasting impact will come from. At MEST, we’re inspired to see entrepreneurs building solutions that are deeply local yet globally adaptable.

It reflects a new maturity in African innovation; grounded in customer realities, and ambitious enough to scale across borders.”

As the 2025 winner, Black Swan will receive a USD $50,000 seed equity investment to accelerate its growth, along with the opportunity to collaborate with Absa on potential pilots that drive innovation across the continent.

“Congratulations to Black Swan on reaching this milestone. What resonated with us was the technical discipline behind their approach: the architecture, the clarity of the build, and the way they’re thinking about scaling responsibly. For us, the Challenge is about expanding Absa’s view of the technology landscape and identifying where new capabilities or partnerships might emerge.

“As we move into exploratory conversations and potential pilot work, we recognise that meaningful progress will come from blending enterprise-scale platforms with the speed and creativity of startups to unlock new pathways for innovation,” Tamu Dutuma, Head of Strategy and Transformation for Technology at Absa Regional Operations (ARO).

This year’s Challenge showcased diverse thinking and solutions. The finalists are actively building technology solutions aligned with Africa’s strategic digital evolution and global trends.

“The MEST Africa Challenge reflects our commitment to empowering Africa’s tomorrow together, one story at a time. By supporting founders with bold ideas and transformative solutions, we aim to build an ecosystem where innovation thrives and financial inclusion becomes a reality for many more across the continent,” concludes Dutuma.

World Bank’s new outcome bond supports clean cooking initiative in Ghana

The World Bank (International Bank for Reconstruction and Development, IBRD has priced its latest outcome bond, a US$200 million Clean Cooking Outcome Bond maturing on 31st March 2032.

The bond aims to make cleaner cooking accessible to more than one million people in Ghana.

Under the terms of the bond, an amount equivalent to some of the coupon payable to investors will be frontloaded and paid instead to support projects distributing over 400,000 cleaner cookstoves in Ghana. The bond coupon includes a fixed rate component and a variable component that is linked to the sale of carbon credits generated from the use of the cookstoves. Proceeds from the US$200 million bond will support World Bank–financed sustainable development projects.

“This transaction shows how investors can align financial returns with tangible development outcomes – expanding access to cleaner cooking solutions in Ghana. Strong investor uptake reflects a growing appetite for outcome bonds and the potential to use this kind of financial structure to address pressing development challenges,” said Anshula Kant, Managing Director and World Bank Group Chief Financial Officer.

Through the transaction, approximately US$30.5 million of private capital is mobilised to support the projects, which are designed and implemented by East Africa-based company UpEnergy. The projects are expected to make cleaner cooking accessible to 1.3 million people, cutting reliance on biomass, which will significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The initiative reduces household air pollution, improves health outcomes, and helps to create local jobs through the manufacturing and distribution of improved cookstoves and the distribution of electric cookstoves.

Standard Chartered is sole Lead Manager and Bookrunner for the transaction.

“We’re proud to partner with the World Bank and UpEnergy to deliver the first Clean Cooking Outcome Bond. The bond underscores the power of our global network, which we have brought to bear alongside our capital markets, structuring, carbon and commodities markets expertise to deliver long-term value in Ghana, through the delivery of health, social and environmental outcomes. The US$200 million size for the outcome bond and diverse investor base from four different regions across our footprint is testament to the success of this innovative transaction,” said Henrik Raber, Global Head, Global Banking at Standard Chartered.

The bond is 100% principal protected with the USD 200 million proceeds supporting the World Bank’s sustainable development activities globally. Investors in the bond will forego a portion of the ordinary fixed coupon payments, with an equivalent amount redirected, through a hedge transaction with Standard Chartered, to provide upfront financing for clean cooking projects in Ghana, delivered by UpEnergy.

The projects have been authorised by the Governments of Ghana and Switzerland and will generate carbon credits in the form of Internationally Transferred Mitigation Outcomes (ITMOs). ITMOs are units representing verified greenhouse gas emission reductions that can be transferred internationally between countries or jurisdictions under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement.

The KliK Foundation in Switzerland has committed to purchase these carbon credits under an offtake agreement. A portion of the carbon monetization revenue will be paid to bondholders as the variable coupon component, in addition to the fixed minimum rate component from the World Bank. This is the first financing to connect cash flows on a bond to the generation of ITMOs, introducing a new model for channeling private capital into smart development solutions.

“We are pleased to participate in this innovative transaction given its attractive relative valuation, strong verification process and comprehensive impact reporting alongside industry leading partners. We are especially excited to support the operationalization of Article 6.2 of the Paris Agreement by investing in a transaction that will create high-quality Internationally Transferred Mitigation Outcomes (ITMOs), helping Ghana and Switzerland collaborate to meet their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the accord,” said Stephen M. Liberatore, CFA Head of ESG/Impact, Global Fixed Income, Nuveen.

“By being part of this transaction, we deploy capital where it makes most impact. We are actively supporting innovative projects that have real environmental and social outcomes. Financial performance and responsibility go hand in hand, creating value that extends beyond traditional returns,” said Alexander Onica, Head of Fixed Income and FX, Skandia.

“Mackenzie Investments is proud to partner with the World Bank on the Clean Cooking Outcome Bond. This innovative transaction, which helps fund the mass distribution of electric and improved charcoal cookstoves in Ghana, helps reduce emissions and represents a meaningful step forward in scaling the global adoption of Internationally Transferred Mitigation Outcomes (ITMOs) under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. By directly linking investor capital to measurable climate outcomes, the bond advances multiple sustainable development goals while delivering a compelling risk-adjusted return profile. Mackenzie is confident that the bond’s combined environmental and investment attributes will generate strong value for both society and our clients,” said Hadiza Djataou, Vice President & Portfolio Manager, Fixed Income, Mackenzie Investments.

“Velliv is very pleased to support another impact investment through the World Bank’s innovative outcome bond structure. The World Bank Clean Cooking Outcome Bond will provide cleaner and more fuel-efficient cookstoves for the local population of Ghana in order to support the country’s energy transition and displace polluting and inefficient cooking practices. In addition, the bond will provide an attractive risk-adjusted return for our pension savers,” said Lea Vaisalo, Chief Investment Officer, Velliv Pension.

“This marks L&G’s first outcome bond investment, and we’re proud to partner with the World Bank and Standard Chartered to support an important cause. Harmful cooking practices impact health, the environment, and livelihoods, yet the Clean Cooking Alliance estimates a USD 8 billion funding gap to achieve universal access to clean cooking by 2030. Through our Nature & Social Outcomes strategy, we invest on behalf of our Defined Contribution members, demonstrating how pension capital can deliver measurable social impact while generating positive returns for retirement members,”said Jake Harper, Senior Investment Manager, Asset Management, Legal & General.

“The Rathbone Ethical Bond and Rathbone Greenbank Global Sustainable Bond funds are pleased to support the World Bank on another outcome bond. The new innovative structure offers principal protection from the World Bank, and at the same time provides funding to clean cooking projects in Ghana through the frontloaded portion of the coupon, generating carbon credits, Rathbones continue to support bond structures that are ways of dealing with the Anthropocene,” said Bryn Jones, Head of Fixed Income, Rathbones Asset Management.

“Our investment in the World Bank Clean Cooking Outcome Bond is another tangible example of how the fixed income markets are evolving and facilitating opportunities to direct capital to impactful initiatives. In this case improving the everyday lives for many people in Ghana; funding programs specifically targeted at replacing polluting stoves and fuels with modern, cleaner cooking solutions at scale. For us, this is a natural evolution of the ‘outcome bond’ structures we have historically invested in, such as biodiversity and reforestation – retaining principal protection and a clear risk/return profile, while explicitly linking part of the economic value to real‑world development outcomes,” said Harrison Hill, Impact-Aligned Bond Strategy Portfolio Manager, RBC BlueBay Asset Management.

Suspend tariff hikes now – Organised Labour to gov’t

0

Organised Labour has called for a suspension of the 9.86% increase in electricity tariffs and a 15.92% hike in water tariffs, set to take effect from January 1, 2026.

The association insists it will resist any tariff increase that wipes out the gains from the 2026 wage rise unless the government increases the 9% wage adjustment.

Speaking to the media on Monday, December 8, Secretary General of the Trades Union Congress Joshua Ansah warned that the association may take action if the government does not suspend the increases for further negotiations.

“The PURC had sent a message to engage the TUC over the tariffs on Monday, December 8, only for the Commission to miraculously announce the tariff on December 2, 2025.

“This, we find unacceptable. Following our meeting this afternoon, the TUC has resolved that in the spirit of fairness and mutual respect for our social partnership, we demand that the government suspend the announced tariff increases.

“Government and PURC should, as a matter of priority, immediately engage as agreed to exhaust the consultative process. Leadership of TUC wishes to assure Ghanaian workers that it will resist any tariff increases that will erode the mega 9% government wage adjustment unless the government comes back to the negotiation table,” he stated.

An Accra High Court has dismissed an application filed by lawyers for the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP, Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, which sought further disclosures from state prosecutors in his ongoing illegal mining case.

During the sitting on Monday, December 8, 2025, both parties presented their arguments with the Deputy Attorney General, Dr Justice Srem-Sai, asking the court to dismiss the request.

‘Wontumi is financially struggling; MTN even reverses MoMo sent to him’ – Yandoh alleges

Counsel for Wontumi, Andy Appiah-Kubi, argued that the prosecution’s witness relied on a purported deed or agreement allegedly signed by Wontumi and another accused person, stressing that copies of these documents were needed to adequately prepare for the trial.

Dr Srem-Sai opposed the application, stating that the prosecution does not possess such documents and that the charge does not require their existence.

After reviewing the submissions, Presiding Judge Audrey Kocuvie-Tay dismissed the application for further disclosures.

Speaking to journalists after the proceedings, Andy Appiah Kubi explained the purpose of the motion.

“Today, we filed a motion seeking orders for the prosecution to provide copies of any assignments from either the first accused person, our Chairman Wontumi, or the third accused person, Akonta Mining, the Attorney General wants the court to believe that no such deed or assignment exists”, he noted.

The case, which centres on allegations that Chairman Wontumi permitted mining on his Samreboi concession without authorisation, is expected to proceed to the next phase of the Case Management Conference.

Telecel champions the next wave of Innovators at Tech in Ghana 2025

0

The Director of External Affairs at Telecel Ghana, Komla Buami, has advocated for a new era of collaboration and investment in young innovators as the country positions itself for a digital future.

Speaking at the 2025 Tech in Ghana conference on the theme: ‘When Tradition Meets Innovation’ held at the Manhyia Palace, Mr. Buami shared the telecommunications giant’s sustained investment in nurturing young talents, supporting tech startups, and championing partnerships that accelerate the growth of the country’s digital economy.

Addressing an audience that included chiefs, policy makers, captains of industry, entrepreneurs and key figures in the tech ecosystem, he described Ghana’s next digital leap as contingent on bold investment in the next generation of thinkers and makers.

“Connectivity alone isn’t enough. We must invest in the next wave of thinkers and innovators. We must be intentional about building a constant talent pipeline to lead the digital revolution,” he said, urging industry leaders to overcome the trap of working in silos that has often hindered collaboration in the sector.

Telecel Ghana has already demonstrated this commitment through initiatives like the DigiTech Academy, which has trained about 2,000 upper primary and junior high school students across 13 regions in robotics, coding, artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, and digital marketing.

Through DigiTech, many young graduates have been equipped to build prototypes of smart home systems, automated farm harvesters, and web applications addressing challenges such as malnutrition and mental health.

“Ghana is not short of talent; we’ve simply not been asking our young people to dream big enough and not given them the tools and enabling environment to lead the digital revolution. That should change now,” Mr. Buami said.

He also shared the telco’s efforts to address gender disparity in engineering through its Female Engineering Students Scholarship Programme (FESSP), which has trained more than 100 female engineers by providing mentorship, financial support, and practical work experience.

Telecel has recently reinforced its commitment to digital skills development by partnering with the Ghana One Million Coders initiative, offering free access to its Startocode platform for 100,000 young people. The platform provides courses in Python, web development, data analytics, and digital entrepreneurship, with a particular focus on empowering female learners.

Beyond talent development, Telecel has played a leading role in strengthening Africa’s startup ecosystem. Through the Africa Startup Initiative Programme, Telecel Group has supported more than 40 startups, provided more than $750,000 in benefits, and helped create nearly 4,000 jobs, with about 70 per cent of these startups being women-led.

Mr Buami also stressed the importance of collaboration across sectors, arguing that innovation cannot happen in isolation. He urged tech founders to work with traditional industries, AI innovators, government, content creators and universities to grow the tech industry inclusively.

“Innovation doesn’t happen in compartments. Across the world, collaboration is leading innovation. Open-source ecosystems are winning. Cross-sector partnerships are winning. And Ghana must win this way too,” he said.

Positioning itself as a long-term partner in Ghana’s digital journey, Telecel has pledged to continue investing in connectivity infrastructure, mentoring young innovators, and supporting the broader tech ecosystem to ensure Ghana’s digital revolution is inclusive and sustainable.

Tech in Ghana: Royal Edition 2025 is the 16th edition of the national tech conference, and the first ever to be held in the Ashanti Region under the patronage of Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.  The conference brought together startups, investors, government representatives, and tech enthusiasts from the diaspora to explore how sectors like agriculture, education, manufacturing and fintech are being transformed by technology.

Lumba, who passed away on July 26, 2025, is expected to be laid to rest on Saturday, December 13, 2025, with his final funeral rites on the same day at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.

Ahead of the funeral, the late musician’s family visited the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi, on Monday, December 8, 2025. The visit, YEN.com.gh understands, was to officially invite the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, to the funeral.

Watch the arrival of Lumba’s abusuapanin at Manhyia below:

Hours after the arrival of Lumba’s family at Manhyia, reports emerged that the Asantehene had postponed his encounter with the family to Thursday, December 11.

It is currently unclear what led to the decision to postpone the meeting, but the outcome appeared to please the Ernestina Fosuh faction more. Her uncle, Wofa Yaw Opoku, also appeared to be in a good mood as he left the meeting, apparently pleased with Otumfuo’s decision.

Ernestina Fosuh’s younger sister, Faustina, widely seen as a member of Abusuapanin’s camp, also appeared displeased after stepping out of the meeting, further fuelling speculation that things went wrong for their camp.

December 11 coincidentally happens to be the date for the first hearing in the lawsuit filed by Ernestina Fosuh and others against Abusuapanin Kofi Owusu.

A dispute has emerged between members of the highlife icon’s family since his death over his widowhood rites and the organisation of his funeral.

Daddy Lumba’s abusuapanin angry with bloggers

Moments after the meeting with Otumfuo was postponed, Abusuapanin Kofi Owusu was spotted driving away in his car.

When some bloggers approached him to ask if Daddy Lumba’s funeral had been postponed, Kofi Owusu angrily told off one of the bloggers and threatened to smash his camera for making such an utterance.

“Who told you it [Lumba’s funeral] will not come off. I’m going to smash your camera,” he said.

Reactions to Daddy Lumba’s Abusuapanin’s Manhyia behaviour

The video of Daddy Lumba’s Abusuapanin behaviour towards the bloggers at Manhyia has sparked reactions online. Many observed that Kofi Owusu looked pained by the decision of Manhyia to postpone the meeting. Below are some of the comments

Paramount launches rival bid for Warner Bros Discovery

0

Paramount Skydance has made another offer to buy Warner Bros Discovery as it seeks to trump a rival plan from Netflix to buy the company’s studio and streaming networks.

Paramount, which is backed by the billionaire Ellison family, said it was making a direct offer to shareholders of $30 per share to scoop up the whole of Warner Bros, including its traditional television networks.

It said its proposal was a “superior alternative” to Netflix’s, delivering more cash upfront to shareholders and greater prospect of approval by regulators.

President Donald Trump has said “there could be a problem” with Netflix’s purchase, pointing to competition concerns given the size of the companies.

The hostile bid from Paramount, a smaller player than Netflix which is known for brands such as CBS News, Nickelodeon and Mission Impossible, is the latest twist in a saga that started a few months ago, when Paramount started submitting offers to buy Warner Bros.

That eventually prompted Warner Bros, owner of HBO and classics from Looney Tunes to Harry Potter, to formally open a bidding process.

Paramount had been seen by many on Wall Street as a strong suitor for Warner Bros, in part because the relationship between David and Larry Ellison, who is a Republican megadonor, and Trump was expected to help ease the approval process.

But Warner Bros declared Netflix the winner of that auction on Friday, announcing a deal that valued its studio and streaming networks, including HBO, at about $83bn, including its debt.

It said the sale would proceed after a planned spin-off of other parts of Warner Brothers’ business, including CNN, into an independent company.

Paramount’s offer values the entire company at $108.4bn, which it said was a better deal.Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, is among the financial partners Paramount is working with as part of the deal, according to paperwork submitted to the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Eithertakeover is expected to face scrutiny from competition regulators in the US and Europe.

Analysts said Netflix’s plan would likely raise concerns about dominance in streaming, while Paramount’s proposal would prompt a review of the impact on advertisers and local television distributors, given the power of a combined company over sports and children’s networks.

Paramount’s plans, which would put CBS and CNN under the same parent company, have also been closely watched because of the potential impact on the news business and the Ellisons’ ties to Trump.

The president said over the weekend he expected to be involved in the approval process.

But he has offered little certainty about his views.

While noting potential concerns about Netflix’s tie-up on Sunday, he also praised the streamer’s bosses. Meanwhile on social media on Monday, he took aim at Paramount for a 60 Minutes interview that it aired with former Trump ally Marjorie Taylor Greene, a Republican representative.

In an interview with CNBC, Paramount chief executive David Ellison said he had had “great conversations” with Trump about the deal, while noting that he did not want to speak for the president.

Netflix is the biggest streaming company in the world, with more than 300 million subscribers. It said on Friday it believed the takeover would help supercharge its business and expressed confidence in winning approval from regulators.

But Wall Street analysts have long said they believe a Paramount-Warner Bros combination makes sense, giving the company the scale to compete against rivals such as Netflix and Disney.

It would build on Mr Ellison’s purchase earlier this year of Paramount, which he folded into his Skydance film studio.

“Paramount ultimately needs this deal more than Netflix,” said Ben Barringer, head of technology research at Quilter Cheviot, calling the Warner Bros assets simply “nice to have” for the streamer.

Speaking to CNBC on Monday, Mr Ellison talked up the benefits of his plan for the entire media industry, arguing that Netflix’s takeover of Warner Brothers Discovery would give one firm too much power over actors and other players in the industry.

“It’s a horrible deal for Hollywood,” he said.

He also said he thought Warner Bros’ plan to spin-off its traditional networks into an independent company would set them up to fail and ultimately prove a mistake for shareholders.

“I think [its shares are] going to be worth a lot less than people are claiming,” he said.

Shares in Warner Bros were up more than 3% in midday trade on Monday, while Paramount shares were also up.

Shares in Netflix, however, dropped.

Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson has urged staff of the Osu Tax Service Centre to scale up their efforts in domestic revenue mobilisation.

Dr Forson, who paid a working visit to the Centre on Monday, said while government has made significant gains in expenditure control and the Bank of Ghana continues to perform strongly, revenue generation must now “rise to the challenge.”

Addressing staff, the minister stressed that his visit was meant to encourage and not to interfere with their work.

“I will not obstruct revenue collection, no matter whose ox is gored,” he assured.

inance minister tasks MDAs to reduce audit infractions to the barest minimum in 2026

He noted that improving compliance and strengthening collection is far more sustainable than resorting to tax increases.

“It pains me anytime we resort to higher taxes instead of widening compliance and improving collection. We cannot keep piling taxes on an already burdened taxpayer,” he said.

Dr Forson announced that next year, the ministry will deploy new electronic tools to enhance efficiency in revenue administration.

To incentivise staff, the Minister pledged to approve all bonuses due them—provided they meet their targets.

“Together, we can build a fairer, stronger, and more sustainable revenue system for Ghana,” he added.

Dr Martin Kolbil Yamborigya, Acting Commissioner for the Domestic Tax Revenue Division, welcomed the Minister and expressed excitement on behalf of the team, noting that the visit was both timely and motivating.

The Chairman of the GRA Workers Union, Theophilus Ehun, also assured Dr Forson of the staff’s commitment, saying they will work diligently to achieve the targets set for them.

The visit forms part of the Finance Minister’s renewed push to strengthen compliance, modernise tax administration, and reduce Ghana’s reliance on tax increases by improving efficiency and fairness within the revenue system.

The Continent Adopts a Global Movement and Transforms it into a uniquely African Celebration of Care and Shared Humanity

Millions across the world’s most generous continent by percentage of income donated came together on December 2, 2025, with unprecedented continental coordination to celebrate GivingTuesday, honouring giving traditions that have sustained communities for centuries and transforming the global day of generosity into a powerful, continent-wide expression of African solidarity and community care.

Country leaders, youth networks, nonprofits, and local partners led hundreds of events across the region. Highlights include:

  • The Giving Festival – Nigeria: A national celebration of community philanthropy and creative giving.
  • Mozambique Generosity Forum – Mozambique: A gathering of civil society, youth leaders, and community actors advancing local generosity models
  • Ghana Philanthropy Week – Ghana: A week-long campaign elevating everyday acts of giving rooted in Ghanaian cultural traditions
  • Periods Are Power Exhibition – Uganda: A landmark partnership launch between Rotary Uganda District 9213 and GivingTuesday Uganda, spotlighting dignity, menstrual equity, and community solidarity.
  • Community Clean-Ups – Zambia: Youth and community groups mobilizing environmental action and neighbourhood care
  • Charity Football Games – Sierra Leone & Nigeria (Kaduna Chapter): Sport leveraged as a unifying tool to drive awareness and charitable giving

The GivingTuesday Africa Hub hosted Sankofa, a high-level conversation on reclaiming, honouring, and reimagining Africa’s rich traditions of giving. Leaders, practitioners, and storytellers joined to explore how indigenous generosity systems can shape contemporary civic engagement and philanthropy. Young people, through GivingTuesday Spark, also played a central role, leading campaigns, volunteering, and championing community causes in schools and neighbourhoods across the region.

Africa Unites in Unprecedented Acts of Generosity for GivingTuesday 2025

“Nigeria ranks 1st in Global generosity, with 89% of citizens donating and giving 2.83% of their income to charity says Catherine Mwendwa, Director of GivingTuesday Africa Hub. “When Kenya hosts Africa’s first Giving Machines, or Uganda launches its inaugural Philanthropy Week, we’re not importing charity. We’re scaling what we’ve always done, and the Africa hub showcases how Ubuntu, Harambee, Stokvels, and dozens of other African giving systems offer blueprints for community-driven change worldwide.”

This year’s momentum was strengthened by the efforts of our partners and the long-standing support of influential African creatives and changemakers. As the world reflects on GivingTuesday 2025, the Africa Hub moves forward with renewed purpose: to anchor Africa firmly within the global movement, elevate our diverse giving traditions, and remind the world that true humanity is built and sustained through community.

Over 200 Dormaa farmers set to thrive under Nkokonkenkete initiative

0

Joseph Addae Akwaboa, the Bono Regional Minister, has said that Dormaa Central, Dormaa East, and Dormaa West districts have been selected in the region to pilot the ‘Nkokonketenkete’ project aimed at strengthening and increasing poultry production and reducing imports.

According to the minister, the government Under the project will supply farmers with four-week-old birds to raise and sell.

The Minister made this known during this year’s National Farmers Day held in the Region at Amasu in the Dormaa Municipality. Over 200 farmers, he said, will be supported annually in every constituency.

He added that Veterinary and animal health services were being enhanced, reducing disease outbreaks through improved surveillance and vaccination coverage.

He assured that the region takes pride in Dormaa Ahenkro being a poultry hub, and continues to lead in livestock production, and as a driver of the local economic development.

In the Agriculture sector, the Minister said the region was making great strides and would continue to lead in agricultural development.

“Per available statistics, we remain one of the top producers of maize,

cashew, plantain, eggs, and poultry in the country. Under the 2025 district agricultural performance review, Bono Region achieved a 12% increase in maize yields and 9% growth in rice production due to improved seed distribution and extension services”, he said.

He noted that the youth in the region were responding positively to the call for youth in agriculture.

In an effort to promote youth in agriculture, the Minister said the Mahama-led government has reintroduced School Farms at all levels of education.

The purpose is to inculcate the passion of farming in the youth and change their misconception about the ecosystem of agriculture.

In this regard, a total number of 42 educational Institutions across the region have been involved, including 2 Colleges of Education, 21 Senior High Schools, 3 Vocational/Technical Schools, 8 Junior High Schools, and 7 Basic Schools.

Each institution will be provided with inputs to cultivate maize, vegetables, and livestock for their own consumption.

Accordingly, a total number of fertilisers has been received for distribution to these schools for the next year’s farming season.

Istiqamah SHS at Wenchi was adjudged the Best SHS in Practical Agriculture. This is sad, to motivate them to continue in such commendable efforts and encourage others to follow.

Touching on government policy on the Agriculture sector, the Minister said the government has established Farmer Service Centres for extension service delivery. These are areas where farmers will access extension services and receive supplies for inputs.

“I wish to put on record that out of 50 piloted service centres nationwide, the Bono region had 3 to be situated at Wenchi, Sampa, and Wamfie,” he said

On this year’s 41st National Farmers ‘ Day theme, “Feed Ghana, Eat Ghana and Secure the Future”, the Minister called on Ghanaians to recommit to eating food produced in Ghana to promote and prioritise local food consumption, such as rice, maize, plantain, yams, cashew, vegetables, and poultry.

“Increased local consumption stimulates production, strengthens value chains, and protects the cedi. A strong taste for consuming foreign foods injects large sums of money into the home economies of such imports to the disadvantage of our own economy, he noted.

On Agriculture modernisation, Akwaboa said it was imperative for farmers to embrace modern technology and scale down the traditional practices of farming to increase production to meet local consumption and for export.

“Embracing Modern Technology includes the use of drones for spraying, digital extension platforms, and climate-smart practices. These are no longer optional but essential for sustaining productivity, he advised.

The Bono Minister also called for the collective pursuit of youth participation in the agriculture agenda and assured them of the government’s willingness to continue to support young farmers through training, access to land, mechanisation, and agribusiness financing.

He stressed that this would strengthen partnerships and collaboration between government, private investors, farmer groups, traditional authorities, and development partners to scale up innovations and investments in agriculture for the holistic development of the agriculture sector.

The Minister noted that the Bono region remains Ghana’s leading cashew producer, contributing nearly 45% of national output. And to improve tree crop production, the government has rolled out “Boosting the Tree Crop

Sector” initiative to enhance tree crop production.

Accordingly, the Tree Crop Development Authority (TCDA) continues to provide support for cashew, mango, coconut, and shea value chains.

I’m under pressure to secure jobs for grassroots – Ashanti Regional NDC Chairman

0

The Ashanti Regional leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has acknowledged mounting pressure to secure jobs for grassroots members in the region.

The Regional Chairman of the party, Augustus Nana Kwasi Andrews, however, urged calm among supporters amid concerns over delays in appointments and employment opportunities.

Speaking to journalists in Kumasi on December 8, Mr. Andrews commended party members for their critical role in securing the NDC’s victory in the 2024 general elections, assuring that the party would not neglect those who worked tirelessly for the win.

Despite the Ashanti Region traditionally being a stronghold of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), the NDC made significant gains in both the presidential and parliamentary elections.

More than a year after the victory, party leadership and government officials are facing increasing pressure from supporters seeking job placements, a situation Mr. Andrews described as a major challenge.

He called on party members to remain patient and trust the leadership to address their concerns in due course.

“Looking at the campaign that we did last election (2024), they did very well. They used their energy, their money, their resources, everything. And you know that when you work for somebody, and the person wins power, you have to compensate the person. And there’s a lot of pressure on me. So everybody is demanding.

He added, “The grassroots are calling for more, and everybody needs their own share. That’s why I’m asking my branches to remain calm. They should have hope in H.E President John Dramani Mahama.

“We know that not everybody will get, but the few that will get an appointment, we have to bring it down so that everybody can enjoy their sweat.”

He also assured the party’s resolve to work closely with the Government to deliver on key promises made to the people of the Ashanti Region.

The party says it will ensure that the people of the Ashanti Region are not disappointed.

Nationwide protests are ‘an attempted coup’ -Tanzanian government asserts

0

Minister of Home Affairs, George Simbachawene, speaks to journalists in Dar es Salaam on Dec 8, 2025 Minister of Home Affairs, George Simbachawene, speaks to journalists in Dar es Salaam on Dec 8, 2025

Dar es Salaam. The Minister for Home Affairs, George Simbachawene, has stated that what is planned to take place nationwide on December 9, 2025, are not protests but an attempted coup, as they have no legal basis.

He said the alleged demonstrations, which are said to be open-ended and nationwide, are unlawful because no written application has been submitted, there is no known organiser, and it is unclear where they would begin.

He urged citizens that on December 9, 2025, if they have no essential reason to leave their homes, they should remain indoors and not be persuaded in any way to observe or participate in the planned activities.

These remarks were based on events that occurred during and after the General Election of October 29, 2025, in various parts of the country, where demonstrations escalated into violence, resulting in deaths, injuries, and destruction of both private and public property. including buildings and transport infrastructure.

On December 2, 2025, President Samia Suluhu Hassan, while addressing elders in Dar es Salaam Region, said that what happened on October 29, 2025, was an attempt to overthrow the Government, which had failed, adding that the state was now well prepared for December 9, 2025, or any similar eventuality.

On Monday, December 8, 2025, in Dar es Salaam, Minister Simbachawene held a press briefing together with the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Camillus Wambura, to discuss the security situation ahead of December 9.

He said that on December 3, 2025, the Police Force issued a warning about another threat being mobilised online, in which individuals were allegedly encouraging and organising what they termed “open-ended” protests, stressing that the Government had banned them.

“These demonstrations do not show who has applied for them, who is organising them, or what their objective is. Lawful demonstrations are those for which a formal permit is sought, the message is clear, and the Police are informed.

These are not demonstrations because they have no permit and no identified organisers — this is an attempt at a coup,” he said.

The Minister emphasised that those supporting the December 9 protests should realise that such actions are unlawful.

“If you have no compelling reason to go out, do not go out to observe what is happening. The Government and the Police assure that security will be maintained. If you choose to go out, you are not prohibited, but carry your essential items and be prepared to answer questions, as you will be questioned,” he said.

On the issue of an internet shutdown, Simbachawene said those inciting the protests were using alarming information online, but so far, there was no threat that would justify shutting down the internet, adding that such a measure would only be used as a last resort.

On December 3, 2025, Police Spokesperson David Misime said officers had observed calls for demonstrations on social media, but stressed that not a single individual had formally notified the Police of any such protests.

Police arrests

Speaking on police arrests, Minister Simbachawene said he had already discussed the matter with the Inspector General of Police, Camillus Wambura, and agreed that arrests must be carried out in accordance with the law.

He criticised the practice of officers wearing face coverings during arrests, pursuing suspects at their homes while armed, and operating without police uniforms.

“The type of arrest I support is a lawful and dignified one. An officer should report to the local leader, the person should be known, and their workplace should be identified. There is no need to raid someone’s home wearing a mask. We have agreed that arrests should be conducted with decency,” he said.

He added that while security matters can be complex, such heavy-handed methods should be proportional to the offence, especially in cases involving minor online posts.

“These practices fuel public resentment towards the Police,” he

concluded.

Alumni support essential to educational progress – Former GES Director

0

A former director of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Enoch Hemmans Cobbinah, has charged old students of secondary cycle institutions to work together as partners of development in Ghana’s educational sector.

According to him, this has become necessary to catch up with global evolutions that are changing the face of education and training.

Speaking as Chairman on the occasion of the 116th Anniversary and Homecoming of the Ghana Secondary Technical School over the weekend, he indicated the importance of the partnership because the government cannot do it alone.

“The task ahead is enormous, but so should our collective commitment to the continued progress of GSTS and Ghana be. To alumni associations, the community and potential partners, we cannot rely on the government alone to make GSTS great. That is why we shall continue to count on you to do more through mentorship, financial and other forms of contributions.”

Mr. Cobbinah, an old student of the school, described the results of efforts to support it as a renaissance that will turn things around.

“This renaissance would mean supporting a new bold vision to rekindle and deepen science and technical education. That enables us, in collaboration with key stakeholders and partners, to nurture a pipeline of future-ready students with practical skills and competencies required to plug into the 4th industrial revolution technologies, particularly artificial intelligence, robotics and so on,” he said.

He was speaking on the theme “Advancing Educational Excellence, 116 Years of GSTS Impact and Growth in Ghana”.

Also speaking at the event, headmaster of the school Rev. Dr. Kennedy Obeng called for a conscious investment into modern facilities to help build students who can contribute immensely to the development of Ghana and world at large.

He also called on the government to do its part in reaching targets set in line with modern global standards like STEM.

“We’ve heard the vision of government vis-a-vis our development aspiration. There should be conscious investment and provision of infrastructure and resources in modern classrooms, libraries, laboratories and to provide conducive learning environment.”

“There is also the need for us to have access to technology such as computers and internet connectivity to enhance digital teaching and learning. Resources such as the provision of modern classrooms, libraries and laboratories are important,” he stated.

As part of activities to mark its 116 years of existence, new executives for the Ghana Global GSTS Alumni Association were inducted into office to spearhead affairs for the next four years.

Dr Koma Steem Jehu-Appiah, Ghana’s Ambassador to the Russian Federation, once again demonstrated his commitment to engaging with Ghanaian nationals in Russia by attending a thrilling football match at the Spartak Moscow Stadium on Saturday, December 6, 2025 .

The match, which pitted Spartak Moscow Football Club against Dynamo, ended one goal apiece. The ambassador was accompanied by the Head of Chancery of the Ghana Mission in Moscow.

Dr Jehu-Appiah, along with his member of staff watched the match from the VIP section through the generosity of Ivan Romanovsky, the Vice President of Lukoil for the Americas, Africa and Middle East, the owners of Spartak Moscow Football Club.

The ambassador’s presence at the stadium was, primarily, to support Alexander Dkiku, a Ghanaian footballer who plays for Spartak Moscow and also a member the Ghana Black Stars Team.

After the match, Ambassador Jehu-Appiah took the opportunity to speak with Djiku, urging him to maintain his excellent form as Ghana prepares for the 2026 FIFA World Cup scheduled to take place in the USA, Canada and Mexico.

The ambassador’s message was a timely reminder of the importance of Djiku’s contribution to the Ghana senior national male football team.

Parliament's notice to the EC officially makes Nyindam's Kpandai seat vacant Parliament’s notice to the EC officially makes Nyindam’s Kpandai seat vacant

Parliament has formally notified the Electoral Commission (EC) of vacancy regarding the Kpandai parliamentary seat, following a recent court order for a rerun of the 2024 parliamentary elections in the constituency.

In a letter dated December 4, 2025, signed by Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, the Clerk to Parliament and addressed to the Chairperson of the EC, Jean Mensah, it stated;

“In exercise of the power conferred and the duty imposed on the Clerk to Parliament by Article 112(5) of the 1992 Constitution, I hereby formally notify you of the occurrence of a vacancy in the membership of Parliament, occasioned by the Order of the High Court, Tamale, for a rerun of the Kpandai Parliamentary Elections, given on November 24, 2025.”

The development has officially triggered the process for the EC to organise a rerun in the Kpandai Constituency, as mandated by law.

On November 24, 2025, the Tamale High Court ordered a rerun of the parliamentary election in the Kpandai constituency, directing the Electoral Commission to conduct fresh polls within 30 days.

Kpandai MP speaks on High Court’s election rerun decision

The ruling followed a petition filed by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate, Daniel Nsala Wakpal, challenging the declaration of Matthew Nyindam as the Member of Parliament for Kpandai.

Wakpal argued that the December 7, 2024, parliamentary election was fraught with irregularities.

He cited inconsistencies in Pink Sheets (Form 8A) from 41 out of 152 polling stations and asked the court to nullify results from only those affected polling centers.

In delivering his verdict, Emmanuel Brew Plange, ruled that the irregularities identified were significant enough to affect the integrity of the entire electoral process in the constituency.

He subsequently ordered a complete rerun of the parliamentary election in Kpandai in the next 30 days.

Salah will not feature for Liverpool in their UCL fixture Salah will not feature for Liverpool in their UCL fixture

Liverpool have decided to leave Mohamed Salah out of the squad to face Inter Milan in the Tuesday, December 9, 2025, Champions League fixture, though the forward will not face disciplinary action despite his headline-making interview over the weekend.

The decision comes 48 hours after Salah unleashed a stunning outburst following the dramatic 3–3 draw with Leeds, claiming he had been “thrown under the bus,” insisting he had “no relationship” with manager Arne Slot, and even hinting that Liverpool’s upcoming league match against Brighton could be his final appearance at Anfield.

The 33-year-old was present in training on Monday, December 8, 2025, and worked with the squad as usual, but he will not travel to Italy.

Club sources say the call to remove him from selection was made internally, with Slot fully consulted and supportive. Liverpool believe giving Salah a short break from match involvement is “in the best interests of everyone.”

Salah, who has been a consistent starter and talisman since arriving in 2017, has seen his role diminish in recent weeks, starting on the bench in the last three matches amid a noticeable dip in form. The Egyptian has scored five goals in 18 appearances this season.

The forward is still set to join Egypt for the Africa Cup of Nations on December 15, 2025, after Liverpool’s matches against Inter and Brighton, a timeline he hinted could mark the end of his Liverpool journey.

Ghana commits GH¢207m to data reforms as Deputy Minister pushes for innovative financing

0

The Deputy Minister for Finance and Member of Parliament, Thomas Nyarko Ampem, has called for sustained and innovative financing mechanisms to transform Ghana’s national data ecosystem, describing high-quality statistics as essential to effective governance, accountability and inclusive development.

Speaking at the inaugural 2025 Annual Forum for Data Producers, Users and Enhancers at the Alisa Hotel in Accra, held to mark African Statistics Day, the Deputy Minister said credible data has become central to national planning, particularly in a world shaped by economic uncertainties, demographic shifts, climate pressures and rapid technological change.

He told participants that “data exposes inequalities, strengthens transparency and drives smarter investment decisions,” adding that countries with strong statistical systems often demonstrate higher levels of public sector efficiency.

Mr Ampem outlined Ghana’s recent gains in modernising its statistical architecture, citing the successful implementation of the region’s first fully digital Population and Housing Census, the introduction of high-frequency surveys, and advances in enterprise, labour and agricultural statistics. He also pointed to the growing use of geospatial technologies and digital dissemination tools such as StatsBank and the Ghana Stats App, which have improved public access.

Despite these achievements, he acknowledged persistent gaps in the system, including fragmented administrative data platforms, weak interoperability and excessive dependence on donor support. He expressed optimism that the forthcoming National Strategy for the Development of Statistics III (2026–2030) and the Power of Data Initiative would serve as long-term frameworks to confront these challenges.

The Deputy Minister revealed that GH¢207 million has been allocated in the 2026 Budget for key statistical activities such as GDP and CPI rebasing, national surveys and improvements in economic performance measurement. He said the government is also seeking to expand the Monthly Indicator of Economic Growth to enable policymakers to track economic trends up to 10 weeks faster.

A major reform highlighted at the forum is the ongoing integration of administrative data systems using the Ghana Card’s unique identifier. According to Mr Ampem, this will drastically reduce future census costs by more than 70 percent while ensuring a continuous supply of reliable population data. Government will also introduce “Ghana in Numbers”, an annual visual publication aimed at making data more accessible to citizens.

He further disclosed that the Statistical Service Act is under review to improve the autonomy and global standing of the Ghana Statistical Service. Calling for collective action, he encouraged institutions to embrace advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence and satellite imagery, improve interoperability and strengthen capacity for evidence-informed planning.

On financing, he urged the adoption of blended finance, results-based financing, public-private partnerships and the creation of a National Data Fund. He appealed to development partners to align their support with national priorities, while urging data producers to innovate and policymakers, researchers and the media to use more data in their work.

“As we mark African Statistics Day 2025, let us reaffirm our collective commitment to building a resilient and sustainably financed data ecosystem for Ghana,” he said, adding, “When we invest in data, we empower citizens, improve governance and create opportunities for equitable development.”

Government Statistician, Dr Alhassan Iddrisu, who also addressed the forum, reiterated the urgent need for sustainable financing and innovation to reinforce Ghana’s statistical system. He described data as “the backbone of effective governance and development planning”.

“A nation becomes what it measures, what it funds, and what it chooses to understand. Sustainable development starts with sustainable data,” he told participants drawn from government, civil society, academia, development institutions and the private sector.

He explained that while Ghana has recorded significant gains in digital censuses, modernised surveys and administrative data improvements, progress is undermined by inconsistent funding. He emphasised that “financing data is not a cost. It is an investment in economic stability, social inclusion and better outcomes for every household,” referencing global evidence that every US$1 invested in data yields up to US$32 in returns.

Dr Iddrisu welcomed the GH¢207 million allocation in the 2026 Budget, praising the Ministry of Finance and Parliament, including Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, for recognising data as essential national infrastructure.

He urged stakeholders to use the forum to propose practical solutions and innovations that can be implemented immediately, noting that reliable data influences everything from service delivery and resource allocation to risk management.

“When we produce data well, fund it sustainably and use it consistently, we strengthen institutions, protect the vulnerable and open opportunities for every community,” he said.

He concluded by urging the country to prioritise predictable multi-year financing, responsible innovation and a culture of evidence-based policymaking as Ghana works toward a robust and future-ready national data system.

M23 rebels entrench their rule in east Congo even as Trump claims peace

Hundreds of men and women sat in rows in a wooden hall listening to the leader of Congo’s M23 rebellion at the end of a two-week re-education programme.

The rebel chief, Sultani Makenga, asked the students: Do they understand that only force can free their country from misrule by the government in Kinshasa?

“Yes, Commander,” they shouted in reply, a video of the event shows.

But they won’t be putting on fatigues. These new rebel “executives” comprise the civilian frontline in a campaign by M23 rebels to entrench a parallel administration across the tracts of eastern Democratic Republic of Congo they seized in a lightning advance in January.

The course took place in September near the town of Rutshuru in Congo’s North Kivu province. There, the civilian attendees learnt the basics of handling weapons and did some military exercises.

But the focus, according to four trainees and an M23 charter document outlining the group’s doctrine, was more on Congo’s troubled history – and on how to build a new, federal state anchored in good governance, based on M23’s stated values of commitment, determination, sacrifice and discipline.

The 32-page M23 charter, which forms the basis of the civilian training course, has been circulated within the rebel group but hasn’t been previously reported.

“You have come here for training to understand why we’re leading this fight and what we need to do to free the country,” M23 commander Makenga told the students, speaking in an M23 video of the September 2 event. “We think you’ve taken that on board.”

The conflict in eastern Congo is one of eight wars US President Donald Trump says he has ended in less than a year.

At a signing ceremony hosted by Trump in Washington on December 4, Congo and Rwanda, which have long been accused of backing the rebels,

reaffirmed their commitment to peace.

US officials say Western companies could invest billions of dollars to extract Congo’s critical minerals once peace is secured.

The conflict isn’t settled, however. M23 isn’t a party to the pact that Congo and Rwanda signed. On Friday, a day after the meeting, heavy fighting continued on the ground in eastern Congo.

And as M23 takes part in separate peace talks led by Qatar in Doha, the group is tightening its grip on power, undermining the prospect of any real end to the fighting.

Under cover of the negotiations, M23 is effectively building a separate, self-sustaining government in the eastern part of Congo that has many characteristics of a fledgling state,_ Reuters_ has found.

Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams is wary of the threat posed by Croatia ahead of the 2026 World Cup tournament.

The West African football heavyweights has been paired in Group L alongside European giants, England, Panama and 2018 finalists, Croatia following Friday’s draw in Washington.

Ghana will open their World Cup account against Panama on June 17 in Toronto before taking on England on June 23 in Boston. The Black Stars will wrap up their group games against 2018 finalists, Croatia in Philadelphia on June 27.

“Everybody knows how dangerous Croatia have been in the previous World Cup. They have had different strategies. It doesn’t necessarily mean we should go and read their previous strategies as part of our preparation. They are a team that can change their style about three times within 90 minutes of play” he told Sporty FM in an interview.

The 2026 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, will feature an expanded 48-team format, giving Africa a record nine automatic slots.

It will be Ghana’s fifth World Cup appearance, having previously competed in 2006, 2010, 2014, and 2022, with their best performance coming in 2010 when they reached the quarterfinals.

‘Whether you like it or not, he will be buried on December 13’ – Lumba’s father

0

The father of the late highlife legend Daddy Lumba has insisted that the musician will be laid to rest on 13 December 2025, regardless of objections from any quarters.

The announcement was conveyed through a man who described himself as the brother of Lumba’s biological father. In a video shared on X on 6 December 2025, he asserted firmly that nothing would prevent the funeral from proceeding as scheduled.

Daddy Lumba

He stressed that the family intends to go ahead with the burial even if Lumba’s elder sister, Ernestina Fosu, disagrees. “It’s been almost five months since Kwadwo Fosu passed away. And Akosua Brempongmaa is the one causing people to insult us because she has aligned herself with Papa Shee, who is influencing her negatively,” he said.

He added that the family believes it is time to give the late musician a dignified farewell. “It is time we give Lumba a befitting burial because where he is now, I know he is not happy. I want to use this opportunity to tell everyone that, whether they like it or not, we will bury him on 13 December,” he declared.

He urged Ghanaians and sympathisers to ignore the disputes circulating online, emphasising that the family has already settled on the date. “The entire family has agreed to bury Lumba on 13 December. All preparations are underway, so no one should pay attention to the controversies circulating. The final burial has not been postponed,” he added.

Also; five individuals who identify themselves as close maternal relatives of the late highlife icon Charles Kwadwo Fosu, known to the nation as Daddy Lumba, have taken legal action at the High Court in Accra to stop his body from being released without their authorisation

Daddy Lumba’s burial has been scheduled for Saturday, 13 December.

Ghanaian Farmers Reap Policy-Driven Actions

New dawn for food futures
The futuristic vision of celebrating and empowering farmers and other agricultural workers across Ghana, uniquely initiated under the PNDC administration, led by Flt. Lt. J.J. Rawlings, in the mid-1980s, continues to deliver significant benefits. The 41st National Farmers’ Day (NFD), held on December 5, 2025, in Ho, has been widely regarded as one of the most impactful editions. From the moment the President of the Republic of Ghana, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, arrived at the grand durbar to his declaration of Ho as an ‘Oxygen City’, the atmosphere remained joyfully festive throughout. With the theme “Feed Ghana, Eat Ghana, Secure the Future,” this year’s award ceremony emphasised the importance of sustainable agrifood production for food sovereignty, shared growth, resilience, and green jobs.

A week-long series of exhibitions, well-coordinated by the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA), showcased innovations across irrigation, livestock, fisheries, digitalisation, and value addition. These exhibitions offered clear evidence that NFD has evolved from a mere celebration into a powerful public engagement platform for amplifying new farming achievements and policy discourses around modern, AI-aided, and climate-smart agriculture, as well as media encounters revealing multifaceted gaps, needing extra ‘political will’ and green investment attention.

Recognising Farming Excellence

Usually, the award ceremony goes with the giving of substantial prizes, including farming equipment, insurance packages, and a house or cash equivalent from the national to district levels. This year’s Overall National Best Farmer prize was won by Mr Abraham Kwaku Adusei from the Eastern Region of the Republic. He received an award package worth nearly USD 106,000 for his lifelong practice of sustainable, commercial, and diversified farming.

The University of Ghana (UG) outclassed other universities to become the National Best University in Practical Agriculture, recognising its contribution to research and sector-wide skill development. In a demonstration of private-sector alignment with government priorities, Stanbic Bank donated a new tractor to support MoFA’s mechanisation drives.

The policy optimism from political leadership and governance was exemplified. For example, the President, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, reasserted the government’s promise for radical agricultural reforms. He evidently pointed to a sharp reduction in food inflation, from 28.3% in January to 9.5% in October 2025, attributable to fresh policy-driven actions like improved seed and fertiliser distribution and tech-aided irrigation. While it remains unclear whether relocating the agribusiness unit from MoFA to the Ministry of Trade and Industry contributed to remarkable recent gains and progress, the momentum undoubtedly reflects the new reset policies.

The 2025 Edition Hugely Works Well

This year’s NFD intentionally focused on agrifood value-chain development, aligning strongly with the government’s ambition to reduce the national food import bill, boost locally led production and consumption, and promote systemic agricultural efficiency and transparency. The approach also supports targets under the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Agreement. NFD also motivated the youth to consider agriculture as a viable profession.

The active involvement of institutions such as UG, ADB, Stanbic Bank, AgriHouse, Sino-Machinery, and multiple financial organisations and development partners highlights a system-wide direction towards transformed agriculture. This multi-model strengthens the long-term sustainability of the NFD initiative, moving it beyond one-off awards toward strategic development.

Looking Ahead: Systemic Gaps and Policy Priorities

Despite national euphoria around the 41st NFD, Ghana’s overdependence on imported food remains a structural challenge. As such, meaningful improvement will require a systems rethinking method that ensures consistent implementation of integrated policies to expand access to microcredit for vulnerable farming households, mechanised tools, rural infrastructure (e.g., roads, storage, markets, etc.), and value addition facilities. The agrienergy systems must be greenly decarbonised. The women-led agroprocessing enterprises and youth-based agritech startups need financial recapitalisation. Equally vital is the need to scale up agri-innovations to reach smallholders, alongside proactively reassessing and responding to complex global polycrisis, risks, and threats likely to limit increased profitability, productivity, and sustainability. Post-harvest losses pose a serious risk too. In dry savannas of northern Ghana, where rainfall is erratically problematic, solar-powered sources for watering crops or animals are ideal. Without a broad-based adoption across different farm types, markets, and production systems, the maximum benefits of current reforms may not fully materialise to advance zero hunger or avert disaster-linked food shortages.

Besides extreme climate variability and persistent land pressures, mentoring and engaging young people is another critical factor. Practically reskilling youth capacity in climate resilience, digital literacy, and agri-entrepreneurship is essential for sustaining national food systems. In this regard, the Public Agricultural Colleges of Ghana (PACsG) — located at Ohawu, Kwadaso, Ejura, Pong-Tamale, and Damongo — remain significantly crucial. However, even as some high schools received certificates of recognition from the MoFA, the PACsG were controversially relegated in the 2025 NFD award storylines. This raises genuine concerns and has left both PACsG students and staff dispirited, especially since many of them still depend on infrastructure dating back to Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah’s regime. The inclusion of PACsG, the heart of training the country’s next generation manpower, in the upcoming government’s “School Agriculture Programme”, “Big Push Programme”, and subsequent farmers’ days is therefore strongly advocated. Just as the Ministry of Education annually honours teachers through the Ghana Education Service — celebrating Colleges of Education in the process — MoFA can elevate and strengthen its institutional reputation by prioritising, collaborating, and intentionally motivating its accredited PACsG during big spaces such as NFDs. Surely, these concerns or gaps are not new. Some assume cross-border features. However, the interconnectedness of recurring agricultural risks to different systems of environment/climate, technology, education, health, culture, and trade signals the urgency for systemic reforms and stronger public-private responses.

Conclusion

Successfully chaired by Torgbe Afede XIV, Agbogbomefia of the Asogli State, the 2025 NFD marked a strategic turning point to accelerate resetting the agri-innovation agenda of the country. By transforming agricultural value chains, renewing risk research, fine-tuning inclusivity, and adequately investing in farming-related sectors, Ghana is positioning itself for resilient and prosperous agrifood futures. With sustained policy support, especially for smallholder farmers, the reset agrifood vision of the government can translate into realistic and measurable national development gains, providing possible lessons for West Africa’s agriculture.

Ghana Federation of Labour criticises TDC over Tema demolitions

Structures mounted at unauthorised places have been demolished Structures mounted at unauthorised places have been demolished

The Secretary General of the Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL), Abraham Koomson, has criticised the demolition of homes, structures, and containers in Tema.

Hw warned that the exercise risks damaging the government’s image.

Speaking on Ahotor FM’s Yepe Ahunu show on Saturday, December 6, 2025, Koomson said the TDC demolitions were troubling as some affected structures had valid TMA permits.

“If you look at the structures they are demolishing, some have TMA permit numbers. So if TDC and TMA are not working together to approve locations for these containers, then what are they doing? They are only creating problems for the government because you can’t go around demolishing people’s structures,” he said.

Koomson urged the two institutions to harmonize their processes for issuing permits, stressing that, both act on behalf of the government and must present a united front.

He further advised authorities to redirect their attention from demolishing properties to addressing more pressing issues in the municipality, such as malfunctioning traffic lights.

GFL calls for humane approach to Tema demolition exercise

The demolitions in Tema are part of a broader campaign by both the TDC and TMA to clear unauthorized structures from public lands.

In October 2025, the TMA launched a demolition exercise targeting kiosks, makeshift shops, and illegal developments near schools, hospitals, and government installations, citing security concerns and the need to protect state lands.

However, residents and local leaders have repeatedly challenged the manner in which these demolitions are carried out.

In December 2025, residents of Tema Community One Site Three protested against TDC’s task force, accusing it of indiscriminately marking properties with “Remove now by TDC” notices without prior engagement or adequate notice.

Neymar has helped Santos to escape relegation Neymar has helped Santos to escape relegation

On the night of Sunday, December 7, 2025, when Santos desperately needed calm, courage, and a little bit of joy, a heart-warming and hilarious exchange between Neymar and a devoted fan helped set the tone for what would become a season-saving victory.

Moments before kickoff against Cruzeiro, a match Santos had to win to avoid dropping back to Serie B, Neymar was warming up near the touchline when a supporter shouted a joke that echoed around Vila Belmiro.

“Neymar, take my knee! Here for you!” the fan yelled, referencing Neymar’s meniscus injury that has troubled him for months.

Neymar, never one to miss a playful moment, turned with a grin and fired back:

“I need both.”

Without hesitation, the fan raised his hands and shouted: “Take both, it’s okay.”

The entire section behind him burst into laughter, including Neymar, who shook his head and clapped toward the stands. For a team living through months of tension, it was a rare moment of levity.

Minutes later, Neymar channelled that energy into a fearless performance, playing through pain as Santos powered to a 3–0 victory, thanks to Thaciano’s brace and João Schmidt’s strike.

Nana Yaa Serwaa Sarpong advocates Bold educational reforms at the UK House of Lords during Global Education Summit

0

On November 27 2025, global development leaders, policymakers, education experts and civil society organisations gathered at the UK Parliament’s House of Lords for the Global Education Summit hosted by The Baroness Verma of Leicester and organised by the African British Business Forum.

The high-level event focused on the global rise in out-of-school children and the urgent reforms required to deliver equitable, quality education for all.

Among the distinguished Speakers was Nana Yaa Serwaa Sarpong, Founder & President of Women in Sustainability Africa (WiSA) and General Manager of the EIB Network, who delivered a compelling address on the theme “Breaking Barriers: Empowering Out-of-School Children Through Education.”

In her remarks, Nana Yaa who is currently celebrating 26years of Service in the Media, emphasized that education must be viewed as essential national infrastructure, not charity.

Borrowing experiences from her 18 years of empowering women and young people, she presented a strong case on how Africa’s poor educational systems tie into the poor state of its Gender Equality gap.

According to her, unlocking access to education is one of the most effective ways to strengthen economies, empower women and young girls, build resilient communities and drive sustainable development.

She highlighted that each child excluded from learning represents deferred innovation, delayed opportunity and a weakened society.

Nana Yaa noted that the barriers keeping millions of children out of school are complex and interconnected—ranging from poverty and cultural norms to geographical isolation and digital exclusion.

Addressing these challenges, she argued, requires solutions that are equally comprehensive and multi-layered.

Nana Yaa stressed that girls remain disproportionately affected, and investing in girls’ education has a transformative impact across several Sustainable Development Goals, including gender equality, poverty reduction, health outcomes and climate resilience.

Nana Yaa advocated for the expansion of flexible, inclusive and community-responsive educational models, such as mobile classrooms for remote and nomadic communities, community learning hubs, after-hours programmes for working children, radio-based instruction for low-tech areas and digital platforms designed to reach learners regardless of connectivity challenges.

She warned that without deliberate action, the digital divide would continue to widen, pushing already vulnerable children further to the margins.

During her presentation, she introduced three major reforms WiSA is seeking Partners for, aimed at reshaping educational access across Africa and beyond.

These are the Digital Bridge for Out-of-School Children (DBOC), the Community Education Stewardship Hubs (CESH) involving local women educators and youth volunteers and the Teen-focused Global Skills Accelerator for Out-of-School Teens (GSA-OT).

She also underscored the need for education systems that support instruction, inclusivity and healing, particularly for children experiencing autism, trauma, displacement or conflict.

Nana Yaa emphasised that emotional and psychological support must be integrated into educational frameworks in order to restore confidence, stability and long-term learning capacity.

The summit concluded with strong commitments from stakeholders to adopt sustainable financing models, strengthen data-driven policies and expand cross-sector partnerships.

The African British Business Forum reaffirmed its commitment to championing innovative, scalable solutions to educational inclusion across the UK, Africa and the wider global community.
