Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has issued a strong warning against the growing popularity of “Detty December,” a phrase commonly used to describe Ghana’s festive end-of-year party season that draws thousands of tourists annually.
Speaking during a traditional durbar held at the forecourt of Job 600 to mark Labour Day on May 1, 2025, Bagbin expressed deep concern over the image the term projects internationally.
He recalled a recent encounter in the United States where a young woman told him she was planning to visit Ghana specifically for “Detty December.”
“She said she was coming to attend Detty December. I said, ‘I’ve never heard of Detty December. What is Detty December?
“I was told it’s when people come into Ghana from all over the world, do whatever they want for free, and then go back. This is destroying our country,” he said.
The Speaker linked the concept of “Detty December” to the increasing use of substances such as Tramadol and a newer drug referred to as ‘Red.’
“No wonder ‘Red’ is now in Ghana. As leaders, we have not yet accepted Tramadol, and now they want us to accept Red. This is what is happening, and it’s destroying our country. We must all stand up and fight it,” he urged
.
He further expressed his disappointment over how positive cultural initiatives like the ‘Year of Return’ and ‘Beyond the Return’ are, in his view, being overshadowed by activities that erode Ghana’s moral and spiritual fabric.
“We cannot move from ‘Homecoming’ to ‘Year of Return’ and then desecrate this holy country with ‘Detty December.’ We must all stand up and fight it,” he emphasised.
Concluding his remarks, the Speaker issued a firm warning: “I’m giving notice. We’ll take this one up again and fight it to make sure Ghana remains the holy land that the Lord made for us.”

The Supreme Court of Ghana has thrown out the application for the reversal of the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo by President John Dramani Mahama.
The five-member panel of the apex court of the land, chaired by the Acting Chief Justice, Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, dismissed the petition filed by the Member of Parliament for Old Tafo, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, by a 3:2 majority decision.
The justices who voted to dismiss the application included Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, Justice Yonny Kulendi, and Justice Amadu Omoro Tanko.
The dissenting judges were Justice Ernest Gyaewu and Justice Henrietta Mensah-Bonsu.
The chairman of the panel announced that the full judgement would be released on May 21, 2025.
Vincent Ekow Assafuah filed a motion at the Supreme Court seeking to halt the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Sackey Torkornoo by President John Dramani Mahama.
The application, filed on Thursday, April 24, 2025, requested that the Supreme Court issue an order restraining any further action related to the Chief Justice’s removal under Article 146 until the court has heard and delivered its final ruling on an already pending matter regarding the issue.
Assafuah, through his lawyers, also requested that the court restrain the committee of inquiry established by the president from proceeding with the probe into the petitions filed against the Chief Justice.
In the suit, the lawmaker raised concerns that the petition against the Chief Justice, her subsequent suspension, and the formation of a committee to investigate the matter are “a farce and the product of a pre-conceived orchestration to unconstitutionally remove the Chief Justice from office.”
In documents shared by the Law Platform and sighted by GhanaWeb, Assafuah provided evidence to support his claims, alleging that President Mahama and certain members of his administration had previously launched attacks against the judiciary, particularly the Supreme Court, which the Chief Justice heads, and had consistently expressed intentions to remove Justice Torkornoo from office.
“That other appointees of the President have, in very recent times, expressed a view on the petitions purportedly presented against the Chief Justice and indicated that she will surely be removed. Attached herewith and marked as Exhibit ‘F’ is a publication of a recent statement by the Deputy Director of Operations at the Office of the President and Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Mustapha Gbande, in which he stated that the Chief Justice will be removed.
“That following the purported suspension of the Chief Justice and the composition of a committee to inquire into the three petitions against her, statements made by other appointees of the President show that the President’s decision was part of machinations by the NDC Government to control and interfere with the independence of the judiciary. Attached herewith and marked as Exhibit ‘G’ is a copy of a publication by the Deputy Director of Elections and Information Technology of the NDC, Dr Rashid Tanko-Computer, in which he stated that the NDC was pleased with the suspension of the Chief Justice,” excerpts from the application filed read.
Before the judgment of the court on Tuesday, May 6, 2025, the decision to reconstitute the panel which presided over the case faced strong opposition from former Attorney General Godfred Dame, who is also the legal representative for Vincent Ekow Assafuah.
Dame objected to the panel’s reconstitution, according to GhanaWeb’s legal affairs correspondent, George Ayisi, arguing that Acting Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie—now presiding over the case—is directly affected by the outcome and, therefore, should not lead the proceedings.
However, Deputy Attorney General Justice Srem Sai countered that the argument was based on a misconception of personal benefit to the Acting Chief Justice, which, he said, did not exist.
After a brief deliberation, the court unanimously overruled Dame’s objection, affirming that the new panel, chaired by Justice Baffoe-Bonnie, would proceed with the hearing.
The panel was reconstituted due to changes in the composition of the bench, with some justices now serving on the Chief Justice Removal Committee and others being replaced.
The original panel, which was presided over by Prof Henrietta Mensah-Bonsu, included Samuel Asiedu (now on the removal committee), Ernest Gaewu (who retains his place on the new panel), Yaw Asare Darko, and Richard Adjei Frimpong—both of whom have been replaced.

The Renal Unit at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital has remained closed for over a week, leaving many patients who depend on life-sustaining dialysis treatments in a state of distress and uncertainty.
Frustrated patients have voiced concerns over the silence from hospital authorities, noting that no official explanation has been provided for the sudden shutdown. The lack of communication has heightened fears about the potential health risks associated with delayed or missed treatments.
Kojo Baffour Ahenkora, spokesperson for the Renal Patients Association, confirmed the continued closure and lamented the toll on patients. According to him, members are experiencing increased anxiety, deteriorating health, and mounting complications due to the disruption of their treatment schedules.
“Some of my patients are complaining that they cannot sleep, they are having fatigue at night, they cannot eat, and they are vomiting. You can just imagine the complaints that keep coming. Korle-Bu is a bit cheaper, and so when something like this happens, they should communicate with us. We are an association. Accra, May 06, GNA – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has cancelled 341 unreturned Diplomatic Passports and 360 Service Passports issued by the previous Government.
In a statement copied to the Ghana News Agency, the Foreign Affairs Ministry said further to its public announcements of 15th January, and 10th March, 2025 on the recall of Diplomatic and Service Passports, it was announcing that, effective Tuesday, 6th May, Diplomatic and Service passports issued to the underlisted category of persons had been cancelled and were not valid for international travel: Former Ministers and spouses, former Members of Parliament, former Members of the Council of State and spouses and former/retired Justices of the Superior and Lower Courts.
The rest are former Regional Ministers, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives, former Officers of State Institutions, Chairpersons and Members of Boards, Officials of the National Cathedral Project, former Non-Career Ambassadors and Dependents, Religious and Traditional Leaders, Businessmen and Entrepreneurs, former Government Functionaries and all other persons holding official passports not currently serving in any official capacity for the State, or otherwise holding any position that falls under the requirements of sections 6 and 7 of the Passports and Travel Certificates Act, 1967(NLCD 155).
It said the Ministry acknowledges the compliance of 407 holders of Diplomatic and 403 Service Passports, who duly returned their passports in line with the recall directive as of 6th May.
“Consequently, owing to the failure or refusal of the other holders to comply with the directive, the underlisted 341 unreturned Diplomatic and 360 Service Passports bearing the following serial numbers have been hereby cancelled with immediate effect on the instructions of the Honourable Minister for Foreign Affairs,” the statement said.
It said all the affected passports had been placed on the StopList and shall be confiscated from any person attempting to travel with same.

Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Agri-Impact, Juliana Asante-Dartey, in her address explained that the event was to ensure the agri-businesses and micro-businesses understood the consortium’s especially, TechnoServe’s role in the Programme as well as support drive to growth and development.
“Even though we have increasingly gotten better at being self-reliant, we are still bringing in a lot of rice. Ghana’s demand for poultry is over 400,000 metric tonnes. The country is doing less than 20% of that, so most of it has to be imported. Even tomatoes—we still bring them in from neighbouring countries. The situation is not any different with soya, even though it is needed in the poultry and food processing industries,” she explained.
“We are seeking to improve outputs from the value chains to the tune of over 189,000 metric tonnes over four years. In terms of import substitution, we hope that we will be able to reduce importation by $200 million by the end of the four years,” she said.
In his welcome address, HAPPY Programme Director, Frank Obiora Mgbemena, noted that, TechnoServe, over the next two years, will work alongside the participants’ businesses to support business re-engineering efforts by providing technical assistance, grants, market linkages, crop business services, and developing the financial resilience of their businesses to attract more investment.
Agriculture Lead for the Mastercard Foundation in Ghana, Daniel Ninson, pointed out that the Foundation was poised to work with business leaders to strengthen ecosystems where young people could thrive.
One of the micro-entrepreneurs and a team lead at Hakama, a tomato processing company, Zainab Acheampong, expressing her excitement about the project, disclosing that the technical support and grant will help expand their business.
The Supreme Court, in a narrow 3-2 majority decision, has dismissed an application seeking to halt the process for the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo and revoke her suspension from office.
The application, filed by Member of Parliament for Old Tafo, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, was represented in court by lawyer and former Attorney General, Godfred Yeboah Dame.
Acting Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, along with Justices Yonny Kulendi and Amadu Tanko, ruled to dismiss the injunction request. Justices Henrietta Mensah Bonsu and Ernest Gaewu dissented, opposing the majority decision.
The court indicated that the full reasons for its decision will be made public on May 21, 2025.
Chief Justice Torkornoo was suspended by President John Dramani Mahama on Tuesday, April 22, following the establishment of a prima facie case against her. The action was based on petitions filed by private citizen Daniel Ofori, senior police officer Ayamga Akolgo, and the civic advocacy group Shining Stars of Ghana.
A five-member committee has since been constituted to investigate the allegations leveled against the Chief Justice.
Before the petition was referred to the Council of State, Assafuah filed an interlocutory injunction at the Supreme Court, seeking to restrain the president from transmitting the petition to the Chief Justice for a response.
BoG gold reserves hit 31.37 tonnes as of April 30, 2025
The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has increased its gold reserves to 31.37 tonnes as of April 30, 2025, marking a sustained upward trend in the central bank’s strategic effort to shore up the country’s foreign exchange reserves and enhance monetary policy credibility.
The April figure reflects a modest rise from the 31.01 tonnes recorded at the end of March 2025 and continues the growth trajectory observed since May 2023, when reserves stood at just 8.78 tonnes.
The more than threefold increase over a two-year period signals a decisive policy shift by the central bank, leveraging Ghana’s gold-producing capacity to support macroeconomic stability.
This accumulation has been driven primarily by the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme introduced by the BoG.
The initiative aims to increase the country’s foreign exchange buffers, boost investor confidence, and reinforce the stability of the Ghana cedi amid volatile global financial conditions.
At the launch of the programme, the BoG noted that beyond bolstering reserves, it also intended to expand gold holdings to serve as collateral for securing cheaper sources of international financing. This would improve short-term foreign exchange liquidity and reduce reliance on more expensive borrowing instruments.
The Bank’s strategy also aligns with ongoing efforts to diversify Ghana’s reserve assets, moving away from traditional holdings such as U.S. Treasury instruments toward assets with more intrinsic value, like gold.
Analysts say the accumulation of gold is a prudent response to rising global interest rates and capital flow volatility. They note that a robust gold reserve position enhances Ghana’s balance of payments resilience, provides a buffer against external shocks, and strengthens the central bank’s policy toolkit.

An Accra High Court has issued a bench warrant for the arrest of Deborah Seyram Adablah, the young woman at the centre of a high-profile sexual harassment lawsuit involving senior banker, Ernest Kwesi Nimako.
Seyram Adablah, a social media influencer, who gained notoriety in 2023 after suing her alleged “sugar daddy,” Ernest Nimako, for breach of promise, claimed the banker failed to fulfil certain financial and material commitments made during their intimate relationship.
Among her demands were monetary compensation and ownership of a Honda Civic gifted to her.
On May 16, 2023, the court ordered Adablah to hand over the vehicle with registration number GC 7899-23 to the court registrar for safekeeping until the case’s final determination.
However, reports indicate she has defied this order.
In a new development, the High Court has issued a bench warrant for her arrest on grounds of contempt.
According to GHOne TV, the warrant was issued after Selorm Adablah released two videos on social media in which she launched scathing attacks on the judiciary, particularly targeting the presiding judge, Justice John Bosco Nabarese.
In the videos, she accused the judge of favouritism and unprofessional conduct.
“This Judge John Bosco Nabarese said they needed seven days for the judgment to be effective if I had failed to deliver the vehicle as Judge Olivia Owusu had ordered. But he refused to set it aside and now he’s claiming my lawyers insulted him,” she alleged.
She went on to openly challenge the judge, saying, “You, Judge John Bosco, what they did was wrong but you’re not allowing them to bring the car back. You are joking. What is preventing you from doing the right thing?”
Adablah further warned the judge to be fair in his rulings or “face her wrath,” making a controversial statement, “be ready to dance to this drum you are beating. You cannot be sitting there, chopping salaries that are coming from my menstruation and still sideline me.”
She also questioned the integrity of Ghana’s judiciary and dismissed the contempt proceedings as meaningless.
“That contempt case is dead on arrival. I try to advise others not to go to court because I know the system but always remember: the judiciary is an arm on its own, but one full of spirits. So, we shall see.”
She concluded by vowing to appeal the judgment, adding, “as an old man, you should be retiring in peace, not carrying young spirits with you but since you’ve chosen that path, you will carry them.”
The court has since ordered her to appear and explain why she should not be held in contempt.

Seyram Adablah, a social media influencer, who gained notoriety in 2023 after suing her alleged “sugar daddy,” Ernest Nimako, for breach of promise, claimed the banker failed to fulfil certain financial and material commitments made during their intimate relationship.
Among her demands were monetary compensation and ownership of a Honda Civic gifted to her.
On May 16, 2023, the court ordered Adablah to hand over the vehicle, with registration number GC 7899-23, to the court registrar for safekeeping until the case’s final determination.
However, reports indicate she has defied this order.
In a new development, the High Court has issued a bench warrant for her arrest on grounds of contempt.
According to GHOne TV, the warrant was issued after Selorm Adablah released two videos on social media, in which she launched scathing attacks on the judiciary, particularly targeting the presiding judge, Justice John Bosco Nabarese.
In the videos, she accused the judge of favouritism and unprofessional conduct.
“This Judge John Bosco Nabarese said they needed seven days for the judgment to be effective if I had failed to deliver the vehicle, as Judge Olivia Owusu had ordered. But he refused to set it aside, and now he’s claiming my lawyers insulted him,” she alleged.
She went on to openly challenge the judge, saying, “You, Judge John Bosco, what they did was wrong, but you’re not allowing them to bring the car back. You are joking. What is preventing you from doing the right thing?”
Adablah further warned the judge to be fair in his rulings or “face her wrath,” making a controversial statement, “Be ready to dance to this drum you are beating. You cannot be sitting there, chopping salaries that are coming from my menstruation, and still sideline me.”
She also questioned the integrity of Ghana’s judiciary and dismissed the contempt proceedings as meaningless,”That contempt case is dead on arrival. I try to advise others not to go to court because I know the system. But always remember: the judiciary is an arm on its own, but one full of spirits. So we shall see.”
She concluded by vowing to appeal the judgment, adding, “As an old man, you should be retiring in peace, not carrying young spirits with you. But since you’ve chosen that path, you will carry them.”
The court has since ordered her to appear and explain why she should not be held in contempt.

Ghana is intensifying efforts to monitor and conserve its biodiversity resource as part of commitments to global environmental goals, including the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.
Through pockets of existing projects data and the Future of Biodiversity Monitoring and Mapping in Ghana, a new initiative, has commenced to identify gaps and opportunities to build robust framework to better protect nature as well as aid decision making.
Dr Peter Dery, the Director of Environment at the Environment, Science and Technology opened a national stakeholders’ workshop on biodiversity monitoring and mapping, said natural resources were vital to the nation’s economy, cultural identity, and ecological resilience.
The workshop will identify further prioritisation of these opportunities for development into research project proposal (by project partners) potentially incorporating some or all of the following; green financing, novel technologies, building capacity and digital infrastructure in this region
The Project Organising Partners include UNESCO, Development Bank Ghana (DBG), Ghana Environment Protection Authority (EPA) and UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (UK and West Africa offices).
In a speech delivered on his behalf Dr Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, the Minister of Environment, Science and Technology said natural resources were vital to the nation’s economy, cultural identity, and ecological resilience.
Dr Muhammed said Ghana was one of Africa’s biodiversity hotspots, with diverse ecosystems across forests, wetlands, savannahs, and coastal zones.
He said the initiative was in line with the country’s vision to integrate biodiversity into national development planning, provide evidence/science-based decision-making and build capacity for sustained biodiversity monitoring.
The Minister noted it was a priority to update and implement Ghana’s National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP) in line with the Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF)
Government, the Minister added, hoped to finalise the National Biodiversity Plan and establish a formal legal framework for biodiversity conservation and sustainable use.
Mr Edmond Moukala, the Representative of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) reiterated the organisation’s commitment to promoting biodiversity conservation and sustainable development through its global programmes and initiatives.
He noted that the national workshop highlighted the significance of its flagship Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme and the World Network of Biosphere Reserves, which includes 756 sites across 136 countries, including Ghana.
Mr Moukala stated that Ghana’s Bia, Lake Bosomtwe, and Songor Biosphere Reserves played a vital role in demonstrating how biodiversity conservation can be harmonised with sustainable livelihoods.
Those reserves, he said, served as model sites for testing interdisciplinary approaches to managing changes in social and ecological systems.
“UNESCO remains committed to supporting national and international efforts to build sustainable green economies, bridge data gaps, and strengthen the link between biodiversity and climate resilience,” he said.
Professor Helen Roy, the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology and University of Exeter, said the world was facing biodiversity loss caused by human activities, climate change and pollution.
She noted there were initiatives in the biodiversity framework which could facilitate restoration if countries worked hard to effectively implement them.
Professor Roy noted that working together with stakeholders and exploring new tools, technologies would help better protect nature.
The fierce debate over who deserves the title of Ghana’s greatest footballer has taken centre stage once again after Abdul Razak launched a sharp response to Mohammed Polo’s claim that Razak didn’t deserve his 1978 African Footballer of the Year award.

A bus seen in flames after overturning on the Katosi-Nyenga Road in Buikwe District on May 5, 2025
Police have said that three people died and 30 others were hospitalised with serious injuries following a Monday evening bus crash on the Katosi-Nyenga Road in Buikwe District.
However, there are fears that the number of fatalities could be higher as detectives are still verifying the number of passengers who were on board.
Ssezibwa Region Police Spokesperson, Ms Hellen Butoto said in the morning of Tuesday, May 6, 2025, that the three people were burnt beyond recognition after the Scania bus belonging to YY Coaches overturned and burst into flames after the driver lost control when he tried to dodge hitting a boda boda rider who was crossing the road.
“The injured are receiving treatment at Kawolo General Hospital and St. Charles Lwanga Hospital in Buikwe District,” Ms Butoto said.
Ms Butoto explained that confirming the number of fatalities was challenging initially, as police were gathering information from the bus company about the number of passengers on board.
According to Ms Butoto, “The unidentified bodies were taken to Kawolo General Hospital mortuary, as investigations about the particulars are ongoing.”
Ms Butoto said the injured included 10 male adults, 14 female adults, 2 male juveniles, and 4 female juveniles.
Eyewitnesses said the Mbale-bound bus transporting an unknown number of passengers from Kampala overturned and caught fire near Makindu Village Trading Centre in Najja sub-county in Buikwe District.
Mr Moses Katongole attributed the crash to poor planning, citing the narrow road constructed as an alternative route to reduce traffic between Kampala and Jinja.
Mr Katongole noted that over the past two years, the road has increasingly become congested with heavy trucks.
“This road needs to be expanded, especially around trading centers, with speed humps and signage to alert motorists, because the area has become a black spot for accidents,” said Mr Katongole said.
One of the boda boda riders in the area, Mr Rashid Kazibwe, attributed the road’s narrowness to the government’s reluctance to compensate landowners for acquiring more land to construct wider roads, unlike other parts of the country.

Joseph Ade Coker, former Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has criticized the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for their protest against the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, calling it a “childish” political stunt.
Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Tuesday, May 6, Coker defended the government’s actions, asserting that due process was being followed and that the NDC would not be swayed by the opposition’s actions.
“The government is doing the right thing, and due process is being followed.
All the petitions they sent were childish, because nothing will move President Mahama or the NDC from adhering to the constitutional provisions of this country,” Coker said.
He emphasized that the suspension was part of a lawful procedure and that President John Dramani Mahama remained committed to upholding the constitution.
The protest, organized on May 5 by a coalition of opposition parties led by the NPP, saw demonstrators calling for the reversal of the Chief Justice’s suspension.
Petitions were presented to the Presidency, Parliament, and the Judiciary, urging President Mahama to act in favor of Torkornoo’s reinstatement.
Justice Torkornoo was suspended on April 22, 2025, following the establishment of a prima facie case against her, based on complaints from private citizen Daniel Ofori, police officer Ayamga Akolgo, and the civil society group Shining Stars of Ghana.
A five-member committee has been set up to investigate the allegations, in line with Article 146(6) of the 1992 Constitution.

Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has reiterated his calls for an end to the cycle of political blame. He is also asking for the establishment of a national system for reconciliation to strengthen Ghana’s democracy.
Speaking on Adom TV’s Badwam on Tuesday, May 6, the Minority Leader questioned the persistent political culture in which incoming governments criticise their predecessors, describing it as a “vicious cycle” that undermines national unity.
“When will this vicious cycle end? No government can ever be perfect,” Afenyo-Markin said.
The Minority Leader lamented the habitual tendency of successive governments to shift focus away from governance and instead concentrate on faulting their predecessors.
“It always happens that whenever a party assumes power, it criticises the previous government—perhaps for an injustice done to someone. It happens all the time; people always have complaints,” he asserted.
He appealed for a formal structure to promote reconciliation and help the country move past partisan divisions.
“My question is that can’t we have system in place to create a room to reconcile and tame some of these things?” he asked.
The MP stressed that changes in government are often driven by public dissatisfaction, but said Ghana must learn from its past.
“Let’s not be repeating some of the negatives that have affected our democracy since 1992,” he cautioned.
Afenyo-Markin also took issue with the current government’s approach to governance, referring to the ongoing political “reset” as negative and exclusive.
“The reset should promote reconciliation; it should bring everyone on board,” he argued.
Speaking on economic matters, he expressed concern that Ghanaian-owned businesses feel more vulnerable than their foreign-owned counterparts.
“In today’s Ghana, Ghanaian businesses feel less secure than foreign-owned businesses. I have been talking to businessmen,” he noted.
Reflecting on his party’s electoral defeat, the Minority Leader acknowledged that they failed to meet the expectations of the electorate.
“We are not in government because we failed to meet the expectations of ordinary Ghanaians. A new agenda was presented, Ghanaians bought into it, and now they are in office,” he stated.
However, he was critical of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s performance so far, scoring the administration under 20% for its first 120 days in office.
“If I were to mark the NDC administration in their first 120 days… less than 20%. I would give them 20% only because I am a private sector operator,” he said.

The Minister of Energy, John Abdulai Jinapor, has deflected blame for the ongoing power outages or dumsor to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration.
It is a crisis the National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration inherited, he claimed during a radio interview last week.
The persistent load shedding, according to him, is deep-rooted and was left behind by the NPP administration.
“In fact, as far back as December, when we were about going into the election — and that was the last month of the NPP administration — they were shedding about 500 megawatts of power,” he revealed.
“If you look at the whole of 2024, not virtually every month — every month — there was load shedding.”
According to Mr. Jinapor, the crisis was so severe last year that even the former Energy Minister faced intense criticism.
“It got so heated that the minister came under fire,” he recalled. “So this thing didn’t start today.”
He stressed that while Ghanaians are rightfully upset about power outages, the issue did not originate under his watch.
“If the roads are bad, people are unhappy. If water does not flow, people are unhappy. But the night, when the lights go out, people get very upset and angry. That’s what I’ve seen. And so naturally, people want to see their lights on, which is expected,” he added.
A former Attorney-General (A-G) and Minister for Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame has objected to the acting Chief Justice, Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, presiding over the case seeking to halt the suspension of the Chief Justice, Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkonoo.
Mr Dame who is lawyer for Vincent Assafuah, the legislator challenging the suspension of the Chief Justice, argued in court today that Justice Baffoe -Bonnie had an interest in the case and therefore should recuse himself from the five -member panel.
According to counsel, the outcome of the case had the potential to affect the status of the suspended Chief Justice and the Acting Chief Justice and therefore it was in the interest of justice for Justice Baffoe -Bonnie not to be part of the panel.
Mr Dame added that Justice Baffoe -Bonnie had assumed all the powers of the Chief Justice and therefore ought not to be on panel.
“It important that justice must not be seen to be done but must be manifestly seen to be done,” he added
He cited three cases involving the status of the Chief Justice, and stated that in all those cases the Chief Justice, although had the power to empanel did not include himself to the panel.
Response
In his response, the Deputy A-G, Dr Justice Srem -Sai described the objection as “misconceived” and urged the court to overrule it.
It was his submission that the position of Acting Chief Justice came with duties and not any personal interest.
Again, he argued that it was the position of the law that in any constitutional matter as is currently the case, neither the parties or the judges were deemed to have any personal interest.
The Deputy A-G further argued the objection was also misconceived because the case involved the substantive Chief Justice and not the Acting Chief Justice.
“It is not the Acting Chief Justice who is the subject matter of removal proceedings , it is the substantive Chief Justice who is still Chief Justice. The objection has no basis in law,” the Deputy A-G argued.
As at the time of filing this report, the five -member panel, presided over Justice Baffoe -Bonnie, has gone into chambers to rule on the objection.
Former Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame, has described President John Dramani Mahama’s alleged failure to notify Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Torkornoo of petitions seeking her removal in time as an “egregious violation” of Ghana’s Constitution.
Mr Dame made the submission Tuesday, 6th May, while arguing in court in support of an injunction application aimed at halting the Chief Justice’s suspension.
According to him, it is constitutionally imperative that the Chief Justice be promptly informed of any petition affecting her office.
“It constitutes an egregious violation of the Constitution not to notify the Chief Justice six weeks after receiving the two petitions,” Dame submitted.
He stressed that such procedural lapses undermine the principles of natural justice and transparency enshrined in the 1992 Constitution.
The former Attorney General’s comments come amidst heightened legal and political scrutiny over the ongoing processes to suspend the Chief Justice, which have sparked concerns about constitutional compliance and judicial independence.

Former Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin Central, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, has condemned recent comments made by the Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye, describing them as divisive and damaging to the unity of the party.
The remarks, made during a programme aired on Wontumi Radio and TV on Friday, May 2, were seen by many within the party as an unprovoked attack on the former NPP presidential aspirant.
The show, hosted by Kwaku Kyeremateng Nkansah, featured Mr. Abronye in his capacity as a regional chairman and a member of the party’s National Executive Committee.
In a press statement signed by Prince Adjei, Personal Assistant to Mr. Agyapong, the former presidential hopeful expressed deep disappointment at Abronye’s utterances, warning that such comments could inflame tensions within the party and undermine efforts to foster unity.
“One would expect his remarks to foster unity and discipline within the party,” the statement noted, and added, “But unfortunately, his comments about the party, specifically about Hon. Ken Ohene Agyapong, were both regrettable and disappointing.”
The statement further urged all of Mr. Agyapong’s supporters to remain calm and resist the urge to retaliate, emphasising his commitment to peace, discipline, and unity within the NPP.
“We respectfully urge all Hon. Ken Ohene Agyapong supporters to exercise restraint and refrain from responding in kind. Our commitment is to peace, discipline, and unity within our great party. The thrust is for all to know that we’ve forgiven Mr. Abronye,” the statement intimated.
The statement also cautioned party communicators and leaders to be mindful of their language, especially in public discourse. While acknowledging the importance of free speech, the statement stressed the need for responsibility and decorum when addressing internal party matters.
“Unmeasured attacks only weaken the fabric of our unity,” it added, continuing, “Hon. Ken Ohene Agyapong has consistently demonstrated loyalty, discipline, and an unwavering belief in the unity of the NPP.”
Calling for a collective redirection of energies, the statement emphasised that the party’s focus should be on defeating the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2028 general election — not on internal divisions.
“Our actual political opponent is not within our party,” the statement read. “If we genuinely seek to capture power in 2028 and deliver progress and prosperity to the Ghanaian people, then our focus must shift to the NDC, rather than internal skirmishes,” the statement noted.
The release called on all party faithful to uphold unity and collaborate in building a stronger NPP for the future of Ghana.
The General Secretary of the Industrial and Commercial Workers’ Union (ICU) Ghana, Morgan Ayawine, has called on the government to implement policies that would alleviate the high cost of living and bring rapid economic relief to the working class.
“I call on the government and all stakeholders in labour, to put in place policies and measures that would ameliorate the prevailing high cost of living, and bring rapid economic relief to the working class and Ghanaians in general,” he said in a statement.
He praised the resilience of workers in the face of daunting economic difficulties, making mention of the challenges of ever-increasing utility bills, high rent, unaffordable food prices, and unbearable medical bills.
“I doff my hat to you, gallant workers of Ghana, for your unflinching resilience over the past years, in the face of daunting economic difficulties, and for tenaciously holding the fort inspite of excruciating economic hardship you have been enduring, where the “take-home” pay of some of you could hardly take you to the door step of your workplace, let alone take you home for you and your families to live dignified lives,” he added
He also urged the government and stakeholders to put in place measures that would amend the prevailing economic hardship, emphasizing the need for job creation and sustainable economic policies.
“I deem it pertinent to mention the re-naming of the Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations as the Ministry of Labour, Jobs and Employment. This is quite reassuring and a clear reflection of trade unions’ view for the government to prioritise job creation in its economic policies and accelerate sustainable job creation to meet the urgent needs of the teeming unemployed youth in the country.”
Emphasising the importance of industrial democracy, social partnership, and worker-management relationships, highlighting the need for fair treatment of workers and optimum wages and benefits, he called on employers to adhere to the Collective Agreement and the Labour Act, 2003 (Act 651), ensuring that workers receive their fair share of the wealth they contribute to creating.
“Equally, employers are obligated to ‘play the game by the rule’ so to speak, and ensure that workers are treated fairly in accordance with the dictates of the Collective Agreement and the Labour Act, 2003 (Act 651) and not be short-changed,” he added.
The National Organizer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye, has said that the massive protest against the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, held by his party along with some opposition parties, should send a clear message to President Mahama to be more cautious.
Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem morning show, Nana Boakye said the protest was a warning to the president.
“The protest against the Chief Justice should tell Mahama to be careful. I have never seen a government face such a massive demonstration. The protest was huge, and we will make the government uncomfortable,” he said.
Nana Boakye described the impact of the demonstration, saying, “The protest has shaken the world. I was amazed by the flow of people, especially on a Monday morning. The turnout was massive.”
He also pointed out that despite Mahama’s government receiving a strong mandate from the people, it has failed to live up to expectations.
“The Mahama government may have received massive support from the people, but they have failed them. That’s why so many people came out to pour their frustrations on the streets. People are fed up,” he stated.
Nana Boakye expressed his surprise at the speed with which frustrations have mounted.
“I was overwhelmed by the turnout. The way Mahama has started governing, it’s clear that people are already angry — and it’s only been five months,” he added.
He continued, “Some of the actions of this government are very troubling, and we are ready to expose their wrongdoings. Less than five months into the administration, they are already making things difficult for Ghanaians.”
The NPP National Organizer also criticized the NDC for creating a hostile environment towards the judicial system.
“Despite receiving a strong mandate, the NDC has fostered a hostile environment towards the judiciary. The recent crowd at the NPP-led demonstration against the suspension of the Chief Justice is a sign that Ghanaians are already growing frustrated with the new administration.”
Nana Boakye further declared that the NPP and other opposition parties would continue their protests.
“We will announce a series of demonstrations in the coming days, and we will provide the public with all the details,” he added.
The protest, which saw participation from other opposition parties alongside the NPP, was held in Accra. It was sparked by what the opposition called a “dangerous interference” with the judiciary after President Mahama suspended Chief Justice Torkornoo.
PROF. OTCHERE Addai-Mensah has officially been relieved of his duties as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi.
The termination of his contract was reportedly announced to him by the Health Minister, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, in Kumasi, and he is said to have taken it in good faith.

Barring any last minute hitch, Dr. Paa Kwesi Baidoo, an Orthopedic Surgeon who works at the same hospital, will be appointed as the new KATH CEO in the coming days.

The Minister of Health, reportedly, announced to Prof. Addai-Mensah last week that his tenure as the KATH CEO has officially ended.
On behalf of President John Dramani Mahama and the government, he commended Prof. Addai-Mensah for his invaluable services to KATH.
The Minister of Health, however, urged Prof. Addai-Mensah to use the days ahead to prepare for his exit and leave office this week, to enable his predecessor to take over.

Ho, May 06, GNA – The 15th Ho East Presbytery Synod of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church, Ghana is to open at Abutia Teti in the Ho West District of the Volta Region, on Thursday May 8, 2025.
The three-day synod is on the theme “Care for Creation: The Task and Mission of the Church.”
Rev. Richard Mawutor Buamah, Acting Clerk of the Presbytery disclosed this to the Ghana News Agency, in Ho, on Monday.
He said it would be under the chairmanship of Rev. George Akuamuah-Boateng, Moderator of the Presbytery.
Rev. Buamah stated that as a prelude, there would be a pre-synod crusade from Tuesday to Thursday, at 1900hours each evening.
He intimated as part of the crusade there would be door to door evangelism, healing and deliverance at the crusade.
The Acting Clerk continued that the official opening of Synod would be Friday, May 9th at 0900hours followed by a plenary session through to Saturday, 10th May.
He said the Synod would be climaxed by a thanksgiving service on Sunday 11th May 2025.
Rev. Buamah said Mr. James Gunu, Volta Regional Minister, would be the Guest of Honour, adding that the General Assembly Executives of the church were also expected to grace the Synod with their presence.
He stated that delegates to the Synod include Presbytery executives, all Pastors in the Presbytery, a Catechist, a Presbyter, one youth and Treasurer each from all Pastoral districts and Parishes, representatives of Church groups and heads of the Church’s institutions in the Presbytery.
Rev. Buamah urged all delegates to the Synod to be on time and help make it a success.

Presidential staffer for the Black Star Experience initiative, Rex Omar, has urged young Ghanaians to be mindful of their social media activities, stating that their posts should positively represent Ghana to the world.
Speaking in an interview on JoyPrime TV, the veteran musician emphasised that the Black Star Experience is about showcasing Ghana’s best, from culture and fashion to food and lifestyle, in order to attract tourists and investors.
“Every Ghanaian, when you wake up in the morning, ask yourself: I am the Black Star. What is going to be my experience today? What am I doing to shine the Black Star?” he said.
He also encouraged citizens to make conscious choices that promote Ghanaian identity, including the clothes they wear and the food they eat.

Rex Omar went on to emphasise the influential role of social media, particularly among the youth. He advised young people to think critically about the content they share online.
“Whatever you are doing on social media, ask yourself, will it attract someone to want to come to Ghana?” he said.
He explained that the core of the Black Star Experience initiative is about putting Ghana’s “best foot forward” to make the country more appealing to the outside world.
“People want to come and feel us, experience us. We must show them something worth coming for, not just the land, but the culture, the people, the food, the fashion, and the spirit of Ghana,” he added.
The African continent is one of two continents in the world which has not yet had any of its members elected as the leader of the Catholic Church; the Pope.
As the cardinal electors of the Catholic Church prepare to enter the Sistine Chapel to commence the conclave for the election of the new Pope, many have opined that it is time for an African to lead the Catholic Church.
These opinions are informed by the massive growth in the Catholic Church on the African continent, which now contributes about 25 percent of the Church’s total population globally.
Currently, out of 252 cardinals, only 135 are eligible to participate in the election of the next Pope — i.e., cast ballots and be voted for in the upcoming conclave, which will take place on Wednesday, May 7, 2025.
Out of the 135 eligible candidates, 53 are from Europe; 23 from Asia; 21 from Latin America; 18 from Africa; 16 from North America; and 4 from Oceania.
Among the 18 African cardinal electors, the names of about five of them have come up as serious contenders to be the successor of the late Pope Francis.

Cardinal Peter Kodwo Appiah Turkson is the Chancellor of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences and the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences.
He previously served as the Archbishop of Cape Coast, from 1992 to 2009.
Cardinal Appiah Turkson, who is currently 76 years old, was made a cardinal by Pope John Paul II in 2003.
Pope Francis died on Easter Monday, April 21, 2025, following a cerebral stroke which led to a coma and irreversible heart failure.
He is Ghana’s first cardinal and has held several key positions at the Vatican, including being the first Prefect of the Dicastery for the Promotion of Integral Human Development, former President of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, and the Treasurer of the Symposium of Episcopal Conferences of Africa and Madagascar (SECAM).
He also served on several Vatican bodies, including the Methodist-Catholic Dialogue (since 1997), the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity (since 2002), and the Pontifical Commission for the Cultural Goods of the Church (since 2002).

Cardinal Robert Sarah is currently the Prefect Emeritus of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments.

Cardinal Philippe Nakellentuba Ouédraogo (Burkina Faso):
Cardinal Philippe Nakellentuba Ouédraogo is the Emeritus Archbishop of Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.
Cardinal Nakellentuba Ouédraogo, who is currently 79 years old, was made a cardinal in 2014 by the late Pope Francis.
He was ordained a priest of the Diocese of Kaya, in his home country, Burkina Faso, on July 4, 1973.
After serving for five years as vicar of the cathedral parish, he studied at the Pontifical Urbaniana University in Rome from 1979 to 1983, earning a doctorate in canon law.
Cardinal Nakellentuba Ouédraogo is the head of the Symposium of Episcopal Conferences of Africa and Madagascar.
As part of efforts to reduce the cost of doing business in the commercial shipping sector, the CEO of the Ghana Shippers’ Authority, Prof. Ransford E. V. Gyampo, has held talks with air freight stakeholders at Kotoka International Airport (KIA).
The engagement included a meeting with the management of the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL), the Agency mandated to plan, develop, manage, and maintain all airports in Ghana, including KIA. This interaction follows similar engagements with stakeholders in the sea and land freight sectors.
In addition to the engagement with GACL, the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Shippers’ Authority, in the company of top management members, paid a working visit to the offices of two major ground handling and cargo companies — Aviance Ghana and Swissport Ghana.
The GSA delegation also held a separate meeting with freight forwarders operating at the Kotoka International Airport to deepen stakeholder collaboration and address operational concerns.
Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL)
The Managing Director of GACL, Mrs. Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare, welcomed the GSA team and congratulated Prof. Gyampo on his appointment. She reaffirmed GACL’s commitment to working collaboratively with state institutions to ensure smooth and mutually beneficial operations.
“We are always ready to support GSA’s operations, and as we have collaborated in the past, we will continue to engage with you to improve the sector,” she said.
Prof. Gyampo recounted his visits to key sea freight stakeholders such as the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), Meridian Port Services (MPS), and various shipping lines.
He also referenced engagements with land freight stakeholders including the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) and the Ghana Immigration Service at Aflao, Kpoglo, and Akanu-Noepe borders, as well as freight forwarders operating in those areas.
He explained that these visits are aimed at collecting first-hand information and encouraging all stakeholders to work towards achieving President John Mahama’s vision of boosting economic growth by reducing the cost of doing business in Ghana.
He added that, with the enactment of the GSA Act 2024 (Act 1122), all shippers and shipping service providers are expected to adhere to a reasonable level of standards to improve their operations and ensure greater predictability for businesses.
“Our role is to protect the interests of shippers — whether by sea, land, or air — while also recognising the concerns of shipping service providers. We will incorporate operating standards into our Legislative Instrument (LI) to ensure that all sector players perform their duties diligently,” Prof. Gyampo said.
Mrs. Afriyie Opare welcomed the approach and encouraged continued collaboration between the GSA and GACL.
Aviance Ghana
At Aviance Ghana, Managing Director Mr. Mark Kamis expressed appreciation for the longstanding collaboration with the GSA and looked forward to enhanced engagement.
He congratulated Prof. Gyampo on his appointment and reaffirmed the company’s commitment to supporting Ghana’s global visibility.

Swissport Ghana
At Swissport Ghana, Managing Director Mr. Gerald Suckling lamented the unstable performance of the sector in recent years.
He noted that the decline in the production of perishable and non-perishable goods in the country has caused some cargo airlines to halt operations in Ghana, negatively affecting Swissport’s business.
He also pointed out that, despite being the largest and most patronised cargo handler over the years, Swissport is currently seeing a drop in exports.
He cited the delayed clearance of goods — largely due to importers’ poor preparation and funding issues — as another key challenge.
Prof. Gyampo acknowledged the concerns and highlighted the need to create a conducive business environment to safeguard investments such as those made by Swissport.
“We must work together to attract and retain business in Ghana. We are committed to addressing your concerns and creating a favourable business climate for all. This is essential to protecting the interests of both shippers and service providers,” he stated.
Mrs. Monica Josiah, Head of Operations at the GSA, took the opportunity to commend Swissport for the positive feedback it received in the GSA’s Service Level Survey.
Meeting with Freight Forwarders
During a meeting with executives of Freight Forwarder Associations operating at KIA, several concerns were raised regarding operational challenges negatively affecting shippers.
Key amongst them was the frequent breakdown of the Integrated Customs Management System (ICUMS), which plays a crucial role in the clearance process. The freight forwarders complained that outages of the ICUMS system sometimes last more than a day, leading to delays and increased costs, which are ultimately passed on to shippers.
They also criticised the slow responsiveness of certain State Agencies involved in the clearance process, saying it often results in bribery.
“One agency advertises 24-hour permit issuance, but in reality, it takes two or more days. Without their permit, we cannot proceed, and this causes delays,” one freight forwarder explained.
Another added, “Due to weight discrepancies, we cannot use the pre-clearance option in ICUMS. Often, the declared weight differs from the actual weight upon arrival, forcing us to restart the process. That’s why we prefer to begin clearance only after the consignment arrives.”
Mrs. Josiah urged freight forwarders to report such issues to the Shipper Support Unit at KIA with adequate evidence. The GSA, she assured, will investigate and demand refunds or redress where applicable.
Prof. Gyampo also encouraged the freight forwarders to operate within the law to ensure that the GSA can advocate effectively on their behalf.
“We will not shield anyone — I want to be clear about that. Do your work in line with the law, and we will always support you,” he concluded.

The high-profile treason case involving opposition politician Tundu Lissu was mentioned again at the Kisutu Resident Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, May 6, with defence lawyers raising concerns over continued delays and calling for greater transparency in the prosecution’s conduct.
Mr Lissu’s defence team, led by Dr Rugemeleza Nshala, told reporters outside the courtroom that the matter was brought before Senior Resident Magistrate Franco Kiswaga.
Dr Nshala revealed that Mr Lissu had declined to participate in the virtual proceedings, insisting instead on making a physical appearance in open court.
The case stems from remarks made by Mr Lissu on April 3, 2025. However, it is yet to proceed to the hearing stage, with the prosecution citing incomplete investigations as the cause of the delay.
“We informed the court that, as the charges are based solely on words allegedly spoken by our client, there is no need for further investigations. The prosecution should by now have submitted the preliminary investigation file to enable the court process to move forward,” Dr Nshala said.
Prosecutors, however, told the court that they were under no legal obligation to submit the file at this stage and assured the magistrate that the documentation would be presented upon completion of the investigation.
In response, Magistrate Kiswaga directed the prosecution to provide a comprehensive progress report on the investigation during the next court session, scheduled for Monday, May 19, 2025, to prevent further procedural delays.
“We hope that the prosecution will comply with the court’s directive so that we can proceed to a fair and timely hearing,” said Dr Nshala.
He emphasised that the case was not about any action, but rather words—words that, he claimed, had unsettled the government.
“We are ready to demonstrate that what our client said constituted democratic expression, not a criminal offence,” he added.
Fellow defence lawyer Mr Jebra Kambole echoed the concerns, noting that the content in question is publicly accessible across various platforms.
“The statements are readily available on YouTube, on CDs, and in the media. There is nothing hidden to investigate. The court has now clearly stated that prosecutors must outline the scope and status of the investigation at the next mention,” said Mr Kambole.
The defence expects that the May 19 appearance will clarify the direction the case will take as they prepare to contest the State’s charges and assert Mr Lissu’s innocence.
Mr Lissu was formally charged with treason on April 11, 2025, at the Kisutu Resident Magistrate’s Court over statements made on April 3. The incitement charge is non-bailable.
However, he also faces three additional charges under Section 16 of the Cyber Crimes Act No. 14 of 2015, which are bailable. These relate to the alleged publication of false information on YouTube with the intent to mislead the public.
The first count accuses Mr Lissu of spreading misinformation regarding the disqualification of Chadema candidates during the 2024 Local Government Elections, claiming that the move followed instructions from the President.

The Compozers’ concert, which took place at the Pink Flamingo inside Laboma Beach in Accra on Sunday, April 27, 2025, drew a large crowd. The concert was organised by leading event management organisation, Akwaaba UK.
The band’s visit to the Jubilee on Friday, April 25, 2025, showcases the strong ties between Ghana and its diaspora, as well as the country’s vibrant music scene.
Joining The Compozers on the visit to the Jubilee House were top executives of Akwaaba UK namely Michael Ayenu Mensah, popularly known as DJ Mensah, Victor Kwasi Darko Nsebi and Daniel Kusi Otchere.
Speaking about the meeting in a post on Instagram, KOD reiterated that, “Ahead of their concert in Accra tonight, I had the pleasure of welcoming The Compozers, the talented British Band of Ghanaian heritage – to the Jubilee House.”
According to him, “With over 9 years of friendship and collaboration with them, I reaffirmed the Diaspora Office’s commitment to supporting their journey in Ghana and beyond.”
He added that, “We also discussed using music as a powerful platform to project Ghana to the world, and the exciting opportunity to organise masterclasses for our local artists, helping them access the global stage.”
KOD’s gesture demonstrates the government’s interest in promoting Ghanaian talent and culture, both locally and internationally. The collaboration between The Compozers and the Diaspora Office could lead to exciting opportunities for Ghanaian artists to access global platforms.
The government is racing against time to fulfill its 120-day social contract with Ghanaians.
Tomorrow, May 7, 2025, marks exactly 120 days since President John Dramani Mahama was sworn into office, marking the deadline for fulfilling key promises outlined in the 2024 NDC Manifesto.
Nineteen promises have been fulfilled, with two in progress, while the government is yet to deliver on seven, which include a review of taxes on vehicles, Commencement of the 24-hour economy policy, a ban on illegal mining, a review of the Customs Amendment Act, 2020, and Introduction of a bill to streamline government scholarship awards.
The others are investigations aimed at purging state security agencies of vigilante elements, reopening investigations into the by-election killings.
Meanwhile, President Mahama is expected to address the nation on Wednesday, May 7, to provide an update on the progress of his administration’s 120-day contract with the people.
“On Wednesday, the President will hold a broadcast in which he will render an account for his stewardship in the last four months or 120 days. Therefore, I will urge Ghanaians to tune in and listen to the President so that they can draw their conclusion as to the level of compliance with the very promises that the President made to the people of Ghana,” he said.
Following the launch of the Code of Conduct for government appointees yesterday, the government is also set to launch a digital portal for reporting breaches of the code.
“If by close of the day, Wednesday, 7th May 2025, any of you still fails to declare your assets, count yourself automatically dismissed because when it comes to protecting the integrity of this government, I will not compromise,” he said.

President John Dramani Mahama eulogised renowned Ghanaian choreographer, Nii-Tete Yartey, for continuing to churn out some fantastic creative dance works over the years.
Speaking during the launch of the Black Star Experience event, President Mahama stated that he was particularly excited that, after all the economic crisis faced in Ghana, the creative minds in the country are still alive.
President Mahama, who spoke after a spectacular performance by the Noyam African Dance Institute, National Dance Company and Abibigroma at the Black Star Experience event, praised Nii-Tete Yartey, for putting together a fantastic creative work for the event.
“We all know about Nii Yartey, may God bless his soul. He was committed to dance choreography. We used to go to the National Theatre to watch the Ghana Dance Assembly, National Dance Company, Noyam African Dance Institute and all of them,” President Mahama stated.
He added that he was glad that Nii-Tete Yartey was continuing the legacy of his father, the late Prof. Nii Yartey, who was very much committed to dance choreography in Ghana and the rest of the world.
“I am happy that in all this economic crisis and all that, they are still alive and that the talent is still there. I also hear that though Nii Yartey is no more, his son (Nii-Tete Yartey) has taken over and he is doing fantastic creative work. This let us know that the talent is there and we must continue to nurture it,” President Mahama noted.
Speaking after the event, Nii-Tete Yartey disclosed that he was highly humbled that President Mahama follows his works and appreciates the efforts he puts into his creative works.
“It is such a great honour for the President to speak so highly of my late father, Prof. Nii Yartey, and to acknowledge my work in the industry. I remain deeply committed to advancing Ghana’s performing arts—not only through the Noyam African Dance Institute but also through projects, innovative collaborations, cultural exchanges and training programmes that continue to elevate Ghana’s global presence,” he stated.
Black Star Experience event is a special initiative aimed at repositioning Ghana as the cultural and creative hub of Africa.
The Supreme Court has dismissed Dame’s objection against Baffoe-Bonnie presiding over Torkornoo case
The Supreme Court has dismissed an objection raised by former Attorney General, Godfred Yeboah Dame, against Acting Chief Justice, Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, presiding over a high-profile constitutional case.
The objection was part of a legal challenge surrounding the suspension of Chief Justice, Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo, by President John Dramani Mahama.
The Acting Chief Justice, Baffoe-Bonnie, is presiding over the court case of suspended CJ Torkornoo.
Lawyer for the Plaintiff, Godfred Dame, raised an objection to the Acting CJ presiding on the grounds that he is directly affected by the outcome of the case and, therefore, cannot preside.
However, Deputy Attorney General, Justice Srem Sai, argued that there is a misconception of personal benefit to the Acting CJ but that is not so.
The panel has consequently recused itself to deliberate and give its ruling.
The case filed by Vincent Assafuah as a concerned citizen, questions the legality of President Mahama’s decision to suspend Chief Justice Torkornoo without first notifying her and obtaining her input before consulting the Council of State.
The MP seeks a declaration that the president’s actions were procedurally flawed and inconsistent with constitutional safeguards designed to protect the independence of the judiciary.
President John Dramani Mahama’s decision to suspend Justice Torkornoo was based on his determination that three separate petitions for her removal established a prima facie case, justifying further investigation.
As per the constitutional line of succession within the judiciary, Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, the most senior member of the Supreme Court, has assumed the role of Acting Chief Justice upon her suspension.

Ghana’s gold reserves hit GH₵46billion in April 2025

The Bank of Ghana’s gold reserves reached a valuation of approximately GH₵46.3 billion at the end of April 2025 per the central bank’s announcement on May 6 that the price of gold had risen to GH₵46,086.32 per ounce.
According to official data published by the Bank of Ghana, the nation’s total gold holdings stood at 31.37 tonnes as of April 30, 2025. This translates to 1,008,837.07 ounces of gold, using the standard conversion of 32,150.7 ounces per metric tonne.
Multiplying the total ounces by the official spot price gives a calculated value of GH₵46,439,963,249.28, marking a rapid rise in the country’s reserves and underlining gold’s importance as a strategic financial asset for the Ghanaian economy.
The central bank has gradually increased its reserves over the past two years, starting from 8.78 tonnes in May 2023 to over 31 tonnes by April 2025. This aggressive accumulation aligns with Ghana’s broader strategy to bolster economic resilience amid global financial uncertainty.
The Bank of Ghana stated that the rise in gold holdings forms part of its “Gold for Reserves” programme, aimed at diversifying the central bank’s asset portfolio and supporting the cedi. The initiative has also contributed to strengthening foreign exchange reserves, reducing reliance on the US dollar, and enhancing the country’s fiscal autonomy.
While the bank has not commented on any immediate plans to alter its gold acquisition pace, the sustained price surge and growing global interest in precious metals suggest Ghana could continue leveraging gold to stabilise its economy.
The announcement comes as gold prices rally globally due to geopolitical tensions, US tariffs, inflation concerns, and increased demand for safe-haven assets. Ghana, Africa’s top gold producer, is strategically positioned to benefit from the bullish trend.
Former Berekum Chelsea and Asante Kotoko forward Obed Owusu has shared his thoughts ahead of the highly anticipated FA Cup semifinal clash between his two former clubs, calling it a crucial encounter with continental stakes.

Abeiku Santana has refuted allegations made by former Deputy Tourism Minister, Mark Okraku-Mantey, that he continues to host radio shows on Okay FM despite his appointment as Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA).
He told NEWS-ONE on Monday that he had stopped working on the radio after his appointment.
“I have not been on radio since my appointment,” he indicated. He also addressed the issue on Facebook, describing Okraku-Mantey’s claims as “entirely false and misleading.”
Abeiku Santana emphasised that he has not engaged in any radio broadcasting activities since assuming his role at the GTA.
Okraku-Mantey had previously expressed concerns about Abeiku’s alleged dual roles, suggesting that continuing media work while holding a public office position could breach Public Service Commission regulations.
He cited the example of Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, who left his media career before entering politics, as a model for separating media and governmental responsibilities.
Abeiku Santana’s appointment as Deputy CEO of the GTA was announced on February 28, 2025. He has been recognized for his contributions to Ghana’s tourism sector and is expected to support the development of industry alliances and lead creative tourism initiatives.
Odomase (Bono), May 06, GNA – Mr Yaw Dabie Appiah Mensah, an elder of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Bono Region has appealed to the high ranking and senior members of the party avoid petty squabbles that can potentially disintegrate supporters.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Odomase in the Sunyani West Constituency, he asked the party leadership to be proactive in tackling the “unpleasant issues,” that had been unfolding within the party after its 2024 Presidential Candidate undertook his nationwide “Thank you tour”.
Mr Mensah, said he was worried about the internal wrangling that had characterised the “thank you tour” of the former Vice President Alhaji Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, stressing that if those unhealthy issues were left unresolved, they could tear the party apart and narrowed its political fortunes in the Election 2028.
“I believe Dr Bawumia initiated the thank you tour to unite and not to divide us. So, if we want him to lead us to electoral victory in 2028, then we must try and forgive each other’s offences and look ahead for that victory,” he stated.
\ He described a recent disagreement between Mr Kennedy Agyapong, a 2024 Presidential Aspirant of the party and Mr Kwame Baffoe, the Bono Regional Chairman of the NPP during the tour of the Vice President as unhealthy, urging the party leadership to resolve the discord.
Mr Mensah a former Organiser of the NPP in the then Brong-Ahafo Region underscored the need for every loyal supporter and member of the party to allow the interest of the NPP to overshadow their personal ambitions for the sake of the Election 2028.
He emphasised that internal party elections were always associated with factionalism, however “we don’t allow that to break our front,” saying it would be difficult for the party to regain political power in 2028 “we allow that to happen”.
“We should always remember that our political opponents are watching us and left to them alone, our great party is disintegrated.
In fact, we make the NPP and our great leader Dr Bawumia unpopular in the eyes of the masses if we are unable to resolve our differences,” Mr Mensah stated, pleading with disgruntled members and supporters to let the past go and look ahead to the future of the party.
Mr Mensah reminded supporters and members that the NPP had remained a strong party under a great elephant, for decades, and it was not the first time it had lost a General Election and will win again.
The High Court in Accra has granted bail to Charles Bissue and Andy Owusu the tune of GHc 200,000 each with two sureties, one of whom is to be justified.
The two have been charged with 15 counts of corruption-related offences, including abuse of office for profit.
Both accused persons pleaded not guilty to the charges and have been ordered to deposit their passports with the court registry.
They are also required to report to the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) once every month as part of their bail conditions.
The case has been adjourned to May 29.
This development follows charges filed by the Office of the Special Prosecutor against the two. Charles Bissue, a former Secretary to the now-defunct Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining (IMCIM), and Andy Thomas Owusu are accused of engaging in corrupt practices in connection with illegal mining operations.
In the first count, Bissue is alleged to have used his public office for personal gain, contrary to Section 179c (a) of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29). Court documents indicate that he received GHC15,000 from one Benjamin Adjapong through Andy Owusu on or around January 22, 2019, in Accra.

Events will span the entire year and extend across all regions—from the Chale Wote Festival in Accra’s Jamestown to the Hogbetsotso Festival in the Volta Region and Fetu Afahye in Cape Coast.
The initiative will also actively promote lesser-known gems of Ghanaian culture such as Kente weaving in Bonwire, storytelling traditions in the Northern regions, and the evolving cinematic output of “Kumawood” and “Ghallywood.”

During the 2024 campaign, President Mahama pledged to launch The Black Star Experience within the first 120 days of his administration.

“This is just the beginning,” said President Mahama. “Through our BIG PUSH policy, we will develop new tourism infrastructure, strengthen our cultural exports, and build the capacities of our practitioners.”

Coordinator, Rex Omar, praised the initiative as a game-changer for Ghana’s creative economy.
