“We’re in a progressive process” Didi Dramani, after to defeat Asante Kotoko

0

Accra Hearts of Oak head coach Didi Dramani has remained calm and optimistic despite his side’s defeat to arch-rivals Asante Kotoko in the 2025 President’s Cup, describing the result as part of the football journey.

Speaking after the match, Dramani reflected on the key moments that shaped the game, including the injury to a pivotal player:

“It’s part of the industry. At a time we were controlling, we lost a key player [Osei Asibey]. They took a chance, and so we have to acknowledge that.”

The new Hearts boss emphasized that the team is still in the early stages of building something solid and sustainable.

“We are in a progressive process,” he said. “I’m very impressed with the composition and execution. There is a lot we have done, but there is a lot we have to put in. I believe we will get there with some adjustments.”

Dramani also extended appreciation to the supporters, who turned out in large numbers to back the team despite the off-season scheduling.

“We love the fans so much. We want to see more of this.”

The match served as the first major test under Dramani’s leadership and, despite the result, offered promising glimpses of the club’s new direction.

Hearts of Oak who had a great outing on the night, unfortunately, lost the game 2-1 at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Govt misses T-bills target for sixth time as investors turn to BoG bills

0

The government has failed to meet its Treasury bill target for the sixth consecutive week, as investor appetite continues to favour higher-yielding Bank of Ghana bills over standard T-bill offerings.

According to the latest auction results from the Bank of Ghana, the government mobilised GH¢2.96 billion, falling short of its GH¢3.35 billion target by 11.56%.

Despite the shortfall, all bids were accepted, with GH¢316 million of the total coming from the 364-day bill.

Investor demand remained strongest for the 91-day bill, which attracted GH¢2.028 billion, representing 68.37% of total bids.

The 182-day bill saw limited interest, with just GH¢622.79 million in bids.

Meanwhile, interest rates continued their downward trend across the yield curve.

The 91-day bill dropped by 14 basis points to 14.56%.

While the 364-day bill posted the sharpest fall, tumbling by 58 basis points to 15.16%, that of the 182-day yield also declined to 15.01%, from 15.25% the previous week.

Market watchers say, attribute the soft performance to investors seeking better returns amid tightening liquidity and a preference for Bank of Ghana instruments, which offer comparatively more attractive yields.

US$1.17 billion in Eurobond coupons paid since debt deal

Government has completed all scheduled Eurobond debt service obligations for 2025, having paid a total of US$1.17billion in coupons since concluding a US$13billion restructuring deal in October 2024.

The Ministry of Finance confirmed on Thursday, July 3 that the latest coupon payment of US$349.52million was made on July 3 through the Bank of Ghana (BoG), bringing the country’s Eurobond servicing record fully up to date for the year.

This follows earlier payments of US$475.6million in October 2024 and another US$349.52million during January 2025.

“This timely payment reaffirms Ghana’s commitment to macroeconomic stability, prudent debt management and constructive engagement with external creditors,” the ministry said in a statement.

Officials believe the consistency in post-restructuring debt servicing could help improve the nation’s sovereign credit profile and support its bid to regain access to international capital markets. The ministry noted that such discipline is expected to positively influence credit rating assessments and investor sentiment in the months ahead.

The country completed restructuring its Eurobond obligations last year under a market-led process aimed at easing near-term repayment pressures and aligning debt service with its medium-term fiscal framework. The current schedule indicates a steep rise in external payments next year, with US$1.41billion in Eurobond debt service due in 2026.

Ahead of this month’s coupon payment, the nation received US$360million in budgetary support from the World Bank, approved on June 29, 2025 under the Second Resilient Recovery Development Policy Financing programme.

The funding is intended to bolster fiscal and external buffers and support reforms aimed at restoring macroeconomic stability.

The World Bank disbursement also comes in anticipation of another US$370million from the International Monetary Fund, contingent on Executive Board approval scheduled for July 7. Combined, the two inflows bring at least US$730million in expected foreign exchange support this month – resources that the BoG has incorporated into its liquidity and reserve management plans.

Foreign reserves stood at over US$11billion as of end-June, equivalent to five months of import cover. The central bank has stated that this buffer has been built deliberately, supported by programme-related inflows, domestic foreign exchange (FX) purchases and a strategic external debt service plan that prioritises market confidence.

Government officials continue to underscore the importance of maintaining the post-restructuring payment schedule as a means of anchoring investor expectations and avoiding renewed financial instability.

The country’s debt crisis, which peaked in 2022, forced authorities to suspend payments on external debt and turn to the IMF for a US$3billion support programme. The subsequent Eurobond restructuring, part of a broader debt resolution process that included bilateral and commercial creditors, was seen as a milestone in the nation’s economic recovery agenda.

Savings and budgeting tools

While near-term financing needs remain substantial, officials are cautiously optimistic that improved fiscal management, revenue reforms and external support will allow Ghana to navigate upcoming debt service obligations without further market disruption.

“Our focus is to preserve the gains made so far and maintain fiscal and external discipline,” the Finance Ministry said.

Ghana forward Joseph Paintsil has opened up on suffering racist abuse online following his recent goal drought at Los Angeles Galaxy.

The Major League Soccer winner ended his scoring drought on Friday evening after netting a brace in LA Galaxy’s 3-0 victory over Vancouver Whitecaps.

Paintsil curled home LA Galaxy’s second in the 60th minute after Matheus Nascimento had opened the scoring in the first half. The 27-year-old sealed victory for Galaxy after converting from the spot with 13 minutes remaining.

In reacting to the victory, Paintsil said he remains focused despite the racist abuse he suffers.

“There is always a backlash and a lot of comments calling me “Monkey” and someone, they will kill my mom and all these kinds of things,” he said after the match.

“But this is something that is always footballers are going to go through, and I take it in hand. But yeah, we just keep focusing, and I will just do whatever I need to do in my power. I cannot do everything in this club. I will just do what I have to do and just leave the rest to God and He will handle the rest.”

Paintsil, who joined LA Galaxy last season and led them to MLS triumph, has netted three goals in 14 games in the 2025 campaign.

Onua Maakye Begs President Mahama to Reduce Evangelist’s 15-Year Jail Term

Media personality Afia Tagor has raised eyebrows following the sentencing of Agradaa for fraud on Thursday, July 3, 2025

The journalist went on the Onua Maakye show to make a passionate appeal to President John Dramani Mahama over the televangelist’s situation

Afia Tagor’s appeal to the president triggered mixed reactions from many Ghanaians on social media

According to a report by YEN news on Friday 4,2025, popular Ghanaian media personality Afia Tagor has appealed to President John Dramani Mahama to help embattled televangelist Agradaa after she was jailed for 15 years for some financial crimes.

On the Friday, July 4, edition of the Onua Maakye show, the journalist noted that the Heaven Way Church founder’s prison sentence was harsh and that she warranted a lighter jail term.

Afia Tagor pleaded with President John Dramani Mahama to ‘reset’ Agradaa’s sentence and reduce it to two years or one and a half years.

She said:

“We are begging you to reset Agradaa’s jail term as part of the wider national reset agenda. We would accept two years or even one and a half years like that.”

The media personality also appealed to the First Lady, Mrs Lordina Mahama, to plead on behalf of the embattled televangelist for a more lenient sentence.

Afia Tagor also recounted the excitement Agradaa shared after she hugged President John Dramani Mahama and his wife during their encounter at the National Day for Prayer and Thanksgiving celebration on Tuesday, July 1, 2025.

She said:

“You knew she would go to jail when she came to the Thanksgiving event and said she would she would be content even if she went to hell or passed away after hugging you on that same day. So, we are begging Mrs Lordina, please speak to the president on our behalf.”

Defence Minister Lists 6 NPP Officials Who Caused Total Damages To Pensioners And Youth Of Ghana

0

Dr. Omane Boamah, Ghana’s Defence Minister, has openly blamed former top officials of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for creating economic conditions that devastated pensioners, young citizens, and other at-risk groups.

In a scathing social media post that has quickly spread online, Dr. Boamah lambasted the “so-called Competent Economic Management Team” of the NPP for mishandling the country’s economy. He pointed directly at figures such as Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Professor Gyan Baffour, Dr. Akoto Osei, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, Alan Kyerematen, Boakye Agyarko, Ken Ofori-Atta, and Yaw Osafo-Maafo.

“These are the very people who caused our suffering,” said Adwoa Mensah, a retired nurse in Accra, recalling how she lost her savings during the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme. “Now they’re acting like saviors?”

In his post, Dr. Boamah declared:

“The so-called Economic Management Team inflicted serious harm on Ghanaians—especially pensioners, youth, women, and the disabled. After all this, rather than sincerely apologizing, they’re already focused on the next elections. The NPP’s only priority is regaining power, not fixing the mess they left behind.”

His statement reflects rising public anger, especially among those affected by past economic reforms. For example, Kwesi Baffour, a university graduate from Kumasi, said: “No job after service, no hope. Yet the same people want us to trust them again? That’s laughable.”

Though the NPP hasn’t issued a formal reply, some party members have brushed off Boamah’s comments as election-driven propaganda.

Nonetheless, many citizens see his words as a rare moment of political accountability. As the 2024 campaign season intensifies, these sentiments could play a crucial role in shaping voter decisions.

Elegance with a Flattering Silhouette

0

When it comes to bridesmaid dresses, style and comfort often go hand in hand. One popular choice that perfectly balances both is the mermaid bridesmaid dress. Known for its sophisticated and flattering silhouette, the mermaid style continues to capture the hearts of brides and their bridal parties alike.

The mermaid bridesmaid dress is characterized by a form-fitting bodice that hugs the torso and hips, flaring out dramatically at or just below the knees. This silhouette mimics the tail of a mermaid, hence the name. Unlike the traditional A-line or ball gown shapes, the mermaid dress accentuates the natural curves of the wearer, creating an elegant and statuesque look.

One of the main reasons brides choose mermaid dresses for their bridesmaids is because of their universally flattering fit. Whether the bridesmaid is petite, tall, or curvy, the mermaid cut emphasizes the waist and elongates the legs, creating a beautiful hourglass shape. This makes every bridesmaid feel confident and radiant on the big day.

Additionally, mermaid dresses come in a variety of fabrics and styles, from structured satin to flowing chiffon, allowing for versatility. Some feature delicate lace overlays or intricate beadwork, adding a touch of glamour and refinement.

Mermaid bridesmaid dresses can be customized to match the wedding theme and color palette perfectly. Many designers offer off-shoulder, strapless, halter, or one-shoulder options, giving bridesmaids room to choose a neckline that suits their personal style and comfort level. Pairing these dresses with understated accessories and elegant heels completes the look without overwhelming the silhouette.

While mermaid dresses are stunning, they can sometimes restrict movement due to their fitted design. Bridesmaids should consider fabrics with some stretch or choose a design that offers a slight flare for easier walking and sitting. It’s important that the dress allows the bridal party to feel comfortable throughout the celebration.

Conclusion: Mermaid bridesmaid dresses combine timeless elegance with a flattering design that enhances every figure. Their versatility and style make them an excellent choice for weddings that aim for a chic, polished look. Bridesmaids can confidently walk down the aisle knowing their dress not only complements the bride’s vision but also highlights their individual beauty. Whether classic or modern, a mermaid bridesmaid dress is sure to make a stunning impression.

COPEC, GPRTU demand clarity and timelines on new GH¢1 fuel levy

0

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Chamber of Petroleum Consumers (COPEC) are calling on the government to provide clear timelines for the implementation and duration of the GH¢1 fuel levy, set to take effect on July 16.

The two groups are also demanding transparency in how the revenue will be used, warning against making the levy a permanent fixture.

After initial resistance, the GPRTU says it is no longer opposed to the GH¢1 fuel levy following discussions with key stakeholders. Industrial Relations Officer of GPRTU Abass Imoro speaking to Citi Business appealed that the levy must not be collected indefinitely.

With diesel prices recording a slight increase in the first pricing window of July, and petrol prices dropping marginally, he warns that any further hikes could result in higher transport fares.

“We will still say it is a little better than where we were so let’s move forward and see. We are working and we will want to make sure we are making profit out of what we are doing. So when we get to a stage where we see no profit why not, we will start to make sure we also gain something out of what we are doing.

“We also plead with those in authority to also make sure they come out with a timeline that we are taking this [fuel levy] for 6 months or for 1 year or whichever date they think it will sustain as up to,” Abass Imoro said.

The Chamber of Petroleum Consumers (COPEC) is also raising red flags. Executive Secretary Duncan Amoah is demanding that the levy be time-bound and fully accounted for.

He insists the revenue should go directly into improving Ghana’s energy sector.

“This new GHȼ1 levy should not be treated as one of those old taxes that we have left on the price build up forever. Whatever can be done in the short to medium term to get the energy or power sector to what you will call full cost recovery, we should gravitate towards that and then make the power sector equally deregulated like we have done with the petroleum sector. That way the sector will be able to finance itself without imposing any hardships on trotro drivers, taxi drivers because there is a challenge with the sector,” he remarked.

Meanwhile, the Chamber of Oil Marketing Companies says its members are preparing for the rollout of the levy on July 16, which coincides with the start of the second pricing window for the month.

However, the Chamber’s CEO, Dr. Riverson Oppong, says it’s too early to tell what exact impact the levy will have on fuel prices, citing ongoing global and local market volatility.

“It will be too early to say whether fuel prices will go up or down. The same position we took from the day this new levy came into being,” he mentioned.

Saudi Arabia to increase embassies in Africa- Al-Khereiji

0

The Saudi Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Walid Al-Khereiji, has revealed that his country intends to increase the number of its embassies in African countries to more than 40 over the coming years.

He also expressed Saudi Arabia’s aspiration to invest $25 billion in Africa.

Al-Khereiji made the remarks while attending a reception marking the annual Africa Day commemoration, held at the Culture Palace in the Diplomatic Quarter in Riyadh.

Al-Khereiji stated that Saudi Arabia would finance and secure $10 billion in exports to Africa and provide $5 billion in additional development financing to Africa by 2030.

“Saudi Arabia also affirms its commitment to developing cooperation and partnerships with African countries, expanding trade and integration, and enhancing consultation, coordination, and mutual support within international organisations on issues of common interest,” he said.

Al-Khereiji explained that African countries occupy a significant position on the country’s foreign policy map and diplomatic network.

“Saudi Arabia has provided more than $45 billion to support development and humanitarian projects in 54 African countries,” he said while noting that the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre (KSrelief) has provided more than $450 million in aid to 46 African countries.

The deputy minister emphasised that Africa is a continent of promising opportunities, with its natural resources, ambitious youth, and renewable potential.

“Despite the challenges of conflict and climate change, the spirit of African cooperation and the aspirations of the continent’s people for peace, justice, and development remain stronger than any challenge,” he added.

Ghana’s 24H+ programme: Who’s leading, how it’s measured, and when it starts

0

Ghana’s economy is undergoing a bold reimagination with the rollout of the Ghana 24H+ Programme. This policy proposal seeks to restructure economic productivity by extending working hours and services across critical sectors.

As a timely response to high unemployment, underutilised infrastructure, and the pressures of global competition, the initiative holds strong potential. However, success depends heavily on institutional coordination, robust implementation frameworks, clearly defined Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), and realistic timelines.

For the Ghana 24H+ Programme to succeed, strong institutional support and leadership are crucial. Key institutions such as the Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations, the Ministry of Trade and Industry, the Ministry of Energy, and local government authorities must coordinate to define sector-specific operational models.

Additionally, the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC), Ghana Standards Authority, and Ghana Revenue Authority will play vital roles in developing incentives, safety standards, and monitoring systems for businesses transitioning to round-the-clock operations.

Beyond the public sector, private sector associations, including the Ghana Employers’ Association, Association of Ghana Industries (AGI), and SME networks, must be involved early in the policy process. Their participation ensures practical business alignment, labour safety, and buy-in for voluntary shift systems.

Educational institutions, training centres, and labour unions will also be critical. They must prepare workers through reskilling and advocate for protections that ensure health, safety, and fair wages, particularly for night shifts and vulnerable workers.

While the programme is commendable, its success will ultimately depend on the chosen implementation strategy, which will determine whether the vision is realised or ends up as yet another unfulfilled initiative in the country’s history.

Policy success hinges on implementation, and Ghana must avoid the common trap of high-ambition, low-action programmes. A phased implementation strategy is necessary, starting with pilot zones in major cities such as Accra, Kumasi, Tema, and Takoradi. These regions already host key industrial and service hubs where infrastructure, energy access, and urban density make 24-hour operations more feasible.

Again, the government should also adopt a sector-prioritised approach, beginning with areas naturally suited to night operations or already operating extended hours. These include Healthcare and emergency services, Manufacturing and agro-processing, Hospitality and tourism, Digital services and call centres, and Transport and logistics.

Incentives such as tax breaks, subsidised electricity tariffs for night-time use, or extended credit for SMEs could encourage participation. Additionally, national campaigns must educate the public on the socio-economic benefits and help shift mindsets around working hours.

Monitoring progress will require measurable outcomes. The government, in collaboration with development partners, must define clear Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to evaluate both the pace and impact of implementation.

These KPIs should track progress in areas such as job creation through shift-based work, business adoption of 24-hour operations, energy reliability during night hours, and improved access to essential services. Indicators must also address worker safety, productivity gains, and inclusivity across genders and regions.

Regular monitoring and public reporting will promote transparency, guide adjustments, and ensure the programme stays aligned with its goals of economic transformation and inclusive growth across the country. These indicators should be disaggregated by gender, age, and region to track inclusiveness and equity. The Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) and National Development Planning Commission (NDPC) must be empowered to collect and publish periodic performance data.

A credible programme must be time-bound with short, medium, and long-term milestones. For the 24H+ Programme to succeed, a phased and realistic timeline is essential. In the short term (0–12 months), the government should focus on stakeholder consultations, developing legal frameworks, and identifying pilot zones.

The medium term (1–3 years) should see operational rollouts in key sectors like manufacturing, healthcare, and ICT, supported by incentives and workforce training. In the long term (3–5+ years), nationwide expansion can follow, guided by data, impact assessments, and policy refinements. Clear timelines will ensure structured implementation, accountability, and public confidence in this transformative national development initiative.

Finally, Maham’s 24H+ Programme offers an ambitious, transformative model for modernising the economy and reducing unemployment. Yet, it is not a simple switch to flip; it requires institutional synergy, data-driven policy design, grassroots support, and continuous feedback.

If government institutions act with urgency and clarity, and if implementation is smart and inclusive, the 24H+ Programme could be a historic turning point in Ghana’s development. It would mark a shift not just in timekeeping, but in mindset, one where productivity, opportunity, and service are no longer bound by the clock.

The policy is aimed at stimulating productivity, accelerating exports, and generating inclusive economic opportunities across key sectors such as agriculture, pharmaceuticals, manufacturing, infrastructure, logistics, and textiles.

In an interview with the media during a tour of its facilities in Tema on Friday, July 4, 2025, the Chairman of COCOBOD, Dr. Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, stressed the need to boost the Board’s productivity.

This includes taking full advantage of the opportunities presented by the new policy.

A 22-year-old Nigerian hairdresser, Nicky Isabella, also known as Bella, has been sentenced to five years in prison by the Achimota Circuit Court for trafficking two young Nigerian women to Ghana and forcing them into prostitution.

The court presided over by Mrs. Akosua Anokyewaa Adjepong convicted Isabella after a full trial.

Isabella lured the victims to Ghana with promises of jobs at a supermarket in Adjiringanor, Accra, but instead seized their earnings and subjected them to exploitation. She made them swear an oath on the Bible, cutting pieces of their pubic hair and threatening to use them in rituals if they disobeyed her orders.

The victims, aged 22 and 23, have been rescued and are receiving psychosocial support. Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) William Ayariga, Director of the Anti-Human Trafficking Unit, emphasized that Ghana is not a safe haven for human traffickers and vowed to continue arresting and prosecuting offenders.

“We are not slowing down. We will continue arresting, investigating, and prosecuting offenders. No form of human trafficking or migrant smuggling will be tolerated in Ghana. Justice will prevail,” DSP Ayariga said.

Ghana Acquires New Planes in 2025 Inspired by Captain Ibrahim Traore’s Vision for National Aviation Growth

0

Monday, July 7, 2025

In a bold move towards establishing its domestic aviation market, Ghana has bought a new fleet of planes in what can be described as one significant milestone in Ghanaian aviation history. This expansion has been attributed massively to the efforts and forward thinking of Captain Ibrahim Traore, the force behind Ghana’s aviation market. The newly bought planes, which will come into use in 2025, are all part of the greater plan towards enhanced connectivity in Ghana, driving economic growth, and making Ghana the region’s leading aviation center in West Africa.

This major fleet acquisition comes as the airlines of the world come out of recession, and Ghana wants to capitalize on this momentum. The Ghanaian national airliner will gain improved service quality, greater capacity, and broader route options domestically and internationally through the acquisition of new aircraft.

Captain Ibrahim Traore’s Vision for Ghana’s Aviation Future

Captain Ibrahim Traore, known for his exceptional leadership and vision for Ghana’s aviation growth, has been instrumental in driving this transformation. Under his leadership, the national airline has pursued ambitious goals of fleet expansion, improved service, and enhanced safety standards. Captain Traore’s vision goes beyond the immediate fleet acquisition; it encompasses the broader development of Ghana’s aviation infrastructure, with plans to improve airports, expand training programs, and make the country a central hub for air travel in Africa.

By acquiring modern, fuel-efficient planes, Captain Traore aims to ensure that Ghana’s national airline can compete with the world’s leading carriers while providing world-class service to passengers. His vision is focused on enhancing the travel experience for both business and leisure passengers, increasing the airline’s international reach, and supporting the national economy through increased trade and tourism.

Fleet Expansion and Its Impact on Ghana’s National Airline

The acquisition of new planes is a critical component of the airline’s strategy to modernize its fleet and improve operational efficiency. Ghana’s new aircraft, which include state-of-the-art models from reputable manufacturers, will replace older planes and allow the airline to operate longer, more efficient routes. The new planes are also expected to reduce operating costs, with better fuel efficiency and lower maintenance costs compared to older models.

These new additions to the fleet will significantly increase the airline’s capacity, enabling it to serve more passengers and expand its flight offerings. The airline will be able to connect Ghana to more international destinations, including major cities across Africa, Europe, and Asia, making Ghana a more accessible destination for both business and leisure travelers.

Moreover, the new fleet will help Ghana’s national airline remain competitive in the fast-growing African aviation market. By investing in modern, efficient aircraft, the airline will be able to improve its service quality, attract more passengers, and bolster its position as a leader in the West African aviation sector.

Strengthening Ghana’s Aviation Infrastructure and Economy

The introduction of new planes is not just about expanding the fleet; it is part of a broader effort to develop Ghana’s aviation infrastructure. The government has invested in upgrading key airports across the country, ensuring that they can handle the increased capacity that comes with the new aircraft. This includes modernizing terminals, improving air traffic control systems, and enhancing ground services to provide a seamless travel experience for passengers.

The economic impact of this expansion will be far-reaching. Increased air travel will lead to higher tourist arrivals, boosting Ghana’s tourism sector. The expansion will also facilitate more business exchanges, attracting foreign investments and opening up new trade routes. As the national airline expands its routes, Ghana will be better positioned to attract international travelers and businesses, further strengthening its position as a key player in Africa’s economy.

Aviation Training and Employment Opportunities in Ghana

Another important aspect of Ghana’s aviation expansion is the creation of jobs and training opportunities for young Ghanaians. With the acquisition of new planes, the airline will need to hire additional staff, including pilots, cabin crew, maintenance technicians, and airport ground staff. This will provide new employment opportunities in the aviation sector and help build a skilled workforce capable of supporting the growing industry.

In addition to creating jobs, the fleet expansion also offers a chance to develop Ghana’s aviation training programs. By providing training for local talent, Ghana is ensuring that it has a sustainable and highly skilled aviation workforce. This aligns with the government’s broader objectives of improving education and training in technical fields and supporting the country’s growth as a regional aviation hub.

The Future of Ghana’s National Aviation Industry

The acquisition of new planes is just the beginning of a long-term strategy to position Ghana as a key player in the African aviation industry. The country’s national airline, under Captain Ibrahim Traore’s leadership, is set to continue expanding its routes, improving its fleet, and contributing to the development of Ghana’s economy. With the right investments in infrastructure, training, and service quality, Ghana’s aviation sector has the potential to become a major success story in Africa.

Looking ahead, Ghana’s national airline aims to increase its international market share, offer more competitive prices, and continue improving service quality. This will make it easier for people to travel to and from Ghana, fostering deeper international relationships and supporting the growth of key sectors like tourism, trade, and business.

Conclusion: Ghana’s Bright Aviation Future

With the visionary guidance of Captain Ibrahim Traore, Ghana’s aviation industry will be revitalized and enhanced. Acquisition of new planes in 2025 will mark a significant achievement in modernizing the nation’s flag carrier and improving its service lines. This will have a bountiful effect on the Ghanaian economy, create employment, and boost the nation’s status as a trendsetter in the African aviation industry.

With increased investment in aviation facilities and manpower, future prospects remain good for Ghana’s aviation industry. If aided in the right way and progressive expansion, Ghanaian national carriers will be key players all across the world, offering quality services across the world to passengers across the world.

Police recruits urged to exhibit competence that matches public confidence

Some officers of the Ghana Police Service Some officers of the Ghana Police Service

Commissioner of Police (COP), Daniel Kwame Afriyie, Director-General in charge of Private Security Organizations, has charged newly passed-out police recruits to exhibit high levels of competence that matches the trust and confidence reposed in them by the public.

Addressing 238 recruits at the Volta Regional Police Training School in Ho, COP Afriyie reminded the officers that the nation’s reliance on the Ghana Police Service for the maintenance of peace, security, and social cohesion which were critical pillars for national development, remained unshaken.

The graduating cohort comprised 31 Under Cadets and 207 General Recruits.

COP Afriyie emphasized the vital role of the Police in the successful implementation of the government’s flagship 24-Hour Economy policy, noting that a well-secured environment was essential for uninterrupted economic and social activity.

He announced that the Police Administration had already established a special unit, namely, the 24-Hour Economy Security Secretariat at the Police Headquarters to coordinate security aspects of that initiative.

Commending the recruits for their impressive parade and smart turnout, he noted that their display reflected dedication, resilience, and commitment throughout the rigorous training period.

He stated, “Your performance affirms the popular saying that ‘smartness in uniform reflects mental alertness and a sound mind in a sound body.’ It is a clear demonstration of your readiness to serve the nation diligently.”

The recruits underwent a comprehensive training programme, including both academic and fieldwork components.

The academic areas covered Police Science, Law, and Social Sciences, while field exercises included public order management, disaster and incident response, swimming, driving, riding, and other practical disciplines.

COP Afriyie expressed confidence that the training had equipped the recruits with the knowledge and skills needed to perform effectively, with integrity and professionalism.

The Reviewing Officer highlighted emerging security threats such as cybercrime, violent attacks, communal conflicts, and evolving criminal tactics, stressing that these developments demanded a more diverse, specialized, and skilled Police Service.

He acknowledged ongoing reforms under the leadership of the Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, which include reviewing operational capacity, revitalizing specialized units, and addressing dwindling morale and manpower challenges.

“In response to these realities, the Police Administration is restoring focus and capacity in our specialized operational units and is committed to boosting manpower and morale to enhance performance,” he noted.

COP Afriyie reminded the recruits of their core duty to serve the public with integrity, fairness, and respect for human rights.

“As Police Officers, you are servants of the people. The badge on your chest is not a license to intimidate, but a pledge to serve with humility, courage, and honour,” he said.

He advised them to uphold the Police Service motto, “Service with Integrity,” and avoid any conduct-on or off duty-that could bring the Service into disrepute.

He stressed the importance of police-public relations, saying, “To every crime committed, there is a public eye that sees it. A positive relationship with the public is essential to encourage the flow of information vital for effective policing.”

COP Afriyie also reminded the public that national security was a shared responsibility and called on all citizens to support the Police Service through cooperation, respect, and the provision of credible information.

“Ghanaians must not only demand accountability from the Police but must also play their part in making our country safe,” he added.

G/Recruit Emmanuel Amedome-Reigns was named Overall Best Recruit of the 2024/2025 intake.

The event drew a number of dignitaries, including James Gunu, the Volta Regional Minister; Richmond Edem Kofi Kpotosu, Member of Parliament for Ho Central; senior commanders of the Police Service in the region; heads of sister security agencies; families and friends of the recruits; and other notable personalities.

The National Team boasts of an impressive track record, having won a total of 350 medals The National Team boasts of an impressive track record, having won a total of 350 medals

Charles Osei Asibey, President of the Ghana Armwrestling Federation, is unnerved that the federation will need about $42,000 to enable the national Armwrestling Team, Golden Arms, participate in the upcoming Africa Armwrestling championship in Abuja, Nigeria.

Osei Asibey bemoaned that the Golden Arms, arguably the most consistent in Ghana and Africa, deserves better.

The National Team boasts of an impressive track record, having won a total of 350 international medals in five African championships and a World Championship.

The team, which also led the charge to save Ghana during the last Africa Games, has nothing to boast of.

The GAF President said, “We admit, it is not smooth economically but there should be a way. The team requires about $42,000 to cater for essential expenses of transportation, feeding, accommodation, equipment, competition fees, and other logistical costs.”

He added “It is a challenging situation and we at Ghana Armwrestling Federation calls on Ghanaians, corporate organizations, and government agencies to contribute to our tireless effort to ensure we compete and win”.

The distressed leader has thus launched a campaign calling on corporate and state institutions to support Golden Arms’ participation in the upcoming 14th African Armwrestling championship slated for July 23 to 27 at the Mashood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja, Nigeria where about 400 Armwrestlers from over 20 countries will converge to determine Africa’s best in the various Armwrestling categories.

The defending champions from Ghana who have been training intensively since February and is poised to deliver an outstanding performance on the African stage will be represented by a contingent of 20 athletes and 4 officials at the annual event.

The Ghana Armwrestling Federation, hopeful to receive some support from the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation (MoSR) is committed to helping the Golden Arms achieve their goals and is counting on the support of the public to make this possible.

Empress Gifty’s Advice On Marriage Sparks Reactions Among Ghanaians

News Hub Creator12h

Gospel singer Empress Gifty has ignited a heated debate on social media after advising young men: “Don’t Marry Single Mothers. They Will Be a Burden For You.” The controversial statement has generated widespread reactions from Ghanaians across various social platforms.

The advice, which was shared on Urban Groove’s social media platforms, has divided public opinion. While some users have expressed support for the gospel singer’s perspective, others have criticized the statement as insensitive and judgmental.

The controversy highlights ongoing societal debates about marriage, relationships, and single parenthood in Ghana. Many commentators have questioned the appropriateness of such advice from a public figure, particularly one in religious circles.

Critics contend that such advice fails to consider the diverse circumstances that lead to single motherhood and the strength these women demonstrate.

The incident has sparked broader discussions about relationship advice, societal expectations, and the role of public figures in shaping social discourse. As the debate continues online, it reflects deeper conversations about modern relationships, family structures, and social values in contemporary Ghanaian society.

Stop Distracting and Allow Mahama Govt To Work, NPP’s Dr. Charles Wereko Brobbey Tells Minority MPs

0

A founding member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Charles Wereko Brobbey, has urged the party to end its constant criticism of the Mahama administration and rather allow the government to focus on addressing the country’s pressing issues.

Speaking in an interview with a local radio station, Dr. Wereko Brobbey, affectionately known as “Tarzan,” expressed concern about what he described as the NPP’s “habitual distractions” aimed at undermining the current government.

He stressed that such behavior does little to help Ghana move forward and only deepens the country’s political divide.

According to him, it is important for any opposition party to play a constructive role by offering alternative policies and holding government accountable without engaging in needless obstruction.

“Let’s stop the distractions and let Mahama work. Whether you like it or not, he’s the President right now, and our focus should be on ensuring Ghana succeeds, not on scoring political points,” Dr. Brobbey said.

He warned that the NPP’s constant attacks could be seen by Ghanaians as a refusal to accept democratic outcomes. “We must remember that the people voted, and that decision must be respected until the next election,” he added.

Dr. Brobbey, who has previously served in various government and public service roles, also called for unity and maturity in Ghana’s political discourse. He advised political leaders to place national interest above party interest.

“It’s not always about NDC or NPP. It’s about Ghana. If the country fails, it affects all of us — not just one party,” he emphasized.

His comments come at a time when the Mahama-led government is facing growing criticism from sections of the opposition over economic challenges and ongoing reforms.

But Dr. Brobbey believes that instead of constant negativity, the opposition should offer support where necessary and challenge constructively where needed.

Many political observers have welcomed his statement, calling it a bold reminder that politics must serve the people, not party agendas.

Whether the NPP leadership will heed Dr. Brobbey’s advice remains to be seen. But his message is clear:

“It’s time to stop the noise and let the government work.”

U.S. Embassy in Accra celebrates 249th independence anniversary

0

The United States Embassy in Accra on Thursday held a ceremony to mark the 249th anniversary of U.S. Independence, highlighting the strong and enduring partnership between the United States and Ghana.

The event which brought together senior government officials, members of the diplomatic corps, civil society representatives, business leaders, religious and traditional leaders, served as a platform to celebrate shared democratic values, mutual respect, and cooperation in key areas such as trade, security, health, and agriculture.

Delivering his remarks at the event, the Chargé d’Affaires at the US Embassy, Rolf Olson, reaffirmed the commitment of the United States to deepening bilateral relations with Ghana.

He noted the historical similarities between the two nations, both of which transitioned from colonial rule to democratic governance.

“We are both countries that had to adjust from forming part of another nation, to conceiving, creating, building, adapting, and sustaining our own,” he said.

Mr Olson highlighted recent political parallels between the two countries, observing that in both Ghana and the U.S., a former president returned to office after defeating an incumbent vice president in elections held this past January.

He underscored the achievements of the US-Ghana cooperation, especially in public health, agriculture, education, and national security.

In addition, he highlighted the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), which provides Ghana with duty-free access to the U.S. market, stressing that “For 25 years, the U.S. has granted African countries access to our markets through AGOA — a tool that continues to strengthen Ghana’s export capacity.”

The Chargé d’Affaires also called for increased trade and investment in energy, mining, and high-value sectors that drive job creation, adding that “Economies can only grow when countries are safe and secure.”

Representing the Government of Ghana, Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Ms Dzifa Gomashie, conveyed congratulations on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama and the people of Ghana.

She praised the United States for its global leadership in promoting freedom, innovation, and inclusive development. Citing AGOA’s impact, she noted that Ghana exported about $1.2 billion worth of goods to the U.S. in 2024, primarily in apparel, cocoa products, and processed agricultural goods.

“These trade flows are more than statistics. They reflect livelihoods, dignity, and empowerment for Ghanaian workers, especially women and youth,” she said.

Ms Gomashie acknowledged USAID’s $150 million investment in Ghana this year, targeting maternal health, food security, and sanitation.

She urged the U.S. to renew and modernise AGOA ahead of its expiration in September 2025.

On security, the Minister assured continued cooperation in counterterrorism and peacekeeping, and addressed visa-related concerns, stating that Ghana is working seriously to resolve them.

The event concluded with both nations reaffirming their commitment to shared prosperity, peace, and democratic values.

Small Arms Commission demands swift passage of firearms regulation bill

0

The National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons has called for the urgent passage of a new Firearms Regulation Bill to address the growing misuse of weapons across the country.

The commission maintains that the absence of a clear regulator and weak legal framework has led to the unchecked use of dangerous firearms, especially during festivals.

This comes after a student of Bimbilla Senior High School died after being struck by a stray bullet during the Fire Festival in Bimbilla in the Northern Region.

Speaking on the Channel One Newsroom on Sunday, July 6, 2025, the Ag. Executive Secretary of the Commission, Adam Bonaa, said that the commission is still working with security agencies to intensify public education and enforcement, while pushing for swift action from Cabinet and Parliament.

“The laws we have currently for gun regulation are over 50 years old. From the point of view of the commission, we have a bill that is at the ministerial level, waiting to be sent to the cabinet and eventually into law. This is because at the moment, there is no regulator when it comes to firearms.

“So, anybody at all is getting access to guns. Children in second-cycle schools are stealing their parents’ sidearms to school, but unfortunately, we are not able to deal with these issues. I am sure that this will be dealt with, hopefully, in the next few months.

“Once this bill is passed, a lot of changes are going to take place within the arms space in this country. But until that is done, we can only continue to work with the police and the other security agencies to educate the public,” he said.

Liberia inaugurates West Africa’s largest iron ore concentrator, advancing $1.8 billion mining expansion

0

Liberian’s President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has officially opened ArcelorMittal, a cutting-edge iron ore concentrator at the Tokadeh mine in northern Liberia, marking a defining moment in the country’s post-war economic transformation.

The inauguration event, held in Nimba County and attended by ArcelorMittal’s Executive Chairman Lakshmi N. Mittal, showcased one of Africa’s largest iron ore beneficiation plants.

This new concentrator – the first of its kind in West Africa – is the centerpiece of ArcelorMittal’s Phase II Expansion Project, a US$1.8 billion investment that brings the company’s total investment in Liberia to about US$3.5 billion.

It is one of the most significant private-sector investments in Liberia since the civil war, cementing ArcelorMittal’s role as the nation’s biggest foreign investor.

President Boakai hailed the project as a “turning point” for Liberia’s industrial future, calling it a symbol of the country’s resilience and a vote of confidence in its stability.

The new concentrator is engineered to transform Liberia’s abundant but lower-grade iron ore into a high-grade product, adding substantial value before export.

Using advanced beneficiation technology, the plant upgrades raw hematite ore (~35% iron content) into premium 66% Fe magnetite concentrate.

This higher-grade concentrate commands a better price on global markets and is in growing demand for efficient, lower-emission steelmaking processes like Direct Reduced Iron (DRI). By processing the ore on African soil, Liberia will ship a higher-value product rather than just raw ore, aligning with broader African goals of industrialization and value addition.

“The iron ore that leaves Liberia should not just be raw material—we must add value, create jobs, and build an industrial base for our future,” President Boakai said at the ceremony.

This emphasis on local beneficiation echoes the African Union’s vision for mineral-led industrialization, demonstrating how African countries like Liberia (and by extension Ghana and others) can leverage natural resources to spark homegrown industrial development instead of exporting commodities in their lowest form.

ArcelorMittal’s Executive Chairman Lakshmi Mittal noted that the concentrator will significantly improve product quality and “guarantees the long-term future of mining in Liberia,” securing the country’s position as a key supplier of high-grade iron ore.

IArcelorMittal’s expansion has been just as much about building Liberia’s infrastructure as boosting output. Alongside the concentrator, the company has invested heavily to modernize critical transport and energy facilities.

The 243-kilometer railway linking the Tokadeh mines to the coastal port of Buchanan has been completely overhauled, with hundreds of thousands of new sleepers laid, track geometry improved, and new passing loops added to handle long, heavy trains.

These upgrades mean Liberia’s mining corridor now meets international operational and environmental standards, paving the way for multi-user access and regional integration.

ArcelorMittal has publicly endorsed an open access policy for the railway, working with the Liberian government on a practical operational framework to allow other mining companies to utilize the rail and port under fair agreements.

This sets the stage for Liberia to serve as a regional minerals hub: iron ore deposits from neighboring Guinea and Sierra Leone could potentially be transported via Liberia’s infrastructure in the future, strengthening West African economic integration.

“These projects are essential to deepening Liberia’s integration into global value chains and unlocking long-term benefits for our people,” President Boakai noted, underscoring how improved infrastructure will connect Liberia – and West Africa – more deeply to international trade networks.

The scale of ArcelorMittal’s Phase II expansion has delivered an immediate boon in employment and training opportunities for Liberians.

During the construction of the concentrator and associated infrastructure, over 5,000 jobs were created on site, the majority filled by Liberian workers. Now that the plant is operational, it is expected to generate roughly 1,000 permanent new jobs in mining, processing, rail operations, and port logistics.

“This brings great relief to our economy noting that it is impacting the area of job creation,” President Boakai said, highlighting the tangible impact on families and communities. ArcelorMittal Liberia currently employs about 2,000 Liberians full-time and, through this expansion, has supported over 10,000 direct and indirect jobs over its two decades in the country.

In addition to job creation, a strong emphasis has been placed on skill development to ensure Liberians are at the helm of the industry.

The company’s Training Academy in Yekepa has been expanded and modernized, offering a fully funded multi-year technical training program for youth.

Dozens of young Liberian engineers and technicians are being trained in disciplines such as mechanical maintenance, electrical systems, heavy equipment operations, and ore processing, gaining the expertise needed to operate the sophisticated new concentrator and related facilities.

“I saw young men and women being trained to run this complex facility. They are the true face of Liberia’s tomorrow,” President Boakai remarked, referring to the new cadre of skilled workers emerging from these programs.

This transfer of knowledge and skills is expected to have a long-term multiplier effect, empowering a new generation of Liberian professionals to lead not only in mining, but also to apply their expertise in other sectors.

The expansion has also invigorated local businesses: Liberian contractors were engaged for civil works, trucking, camp services and more, meaning thousands of indirect jobs and a stimulus to local enterprises in Nimba, Bong, and Grand Bassa counties.

As Liberia’s largest taxpayer, ArcelorMittal Liberia’s enlarged operations will contribute increased tax revenues and royalties to the government, enabling greater public investment in development projects across the country.

ArcelorMittal Liberia’s current mining infrastructure has been built with future expansion in mind: the upgraded rail and port can handle up to 30 million tonnes of ore annually, leaving room for a further increase beyond the initial 20 Mt target.

In fact, company officials disclosed ambitions for a phased ramp-up to 30 Mt per year and possibly building a pelletizing plant down the line.

Such expansions would not only boost output but could also enable more in-country processing (like making direct-reduced iron pellets), which would be a game-changer for West Africa’s role in the global steel supply chain.

The project’s social sustainability is also underlined by ArcelorMittal’s community development commitments. The company contributes about $3 million annually to a community development fund, which has financed schools, clinics, water systems, and livelihood programs in local communities.

President Boakai emphasized the importance of this partnership approach, stating that large investments must “enrich the corporate social responsibility envelope” so that communities feel the benefits “not just in employment, but in schools, clinics, and markets”.

He urged ArcelorMittal to continue its support for education, healthcare, and small businesses in Liberia, reinforcing that sustainable development should be a mutually beneficial endeavor for both the investor and the nation.

The successful commissioning of this world-class concentrator in Liberia carries broader implications for Africa’s development trajectory.

It demonstrates that with a stable investment climate and forward-looking policies, African countries can attract and absorb multibillion-dollar investments in heavy industry.

“We would not have invested this scale of capital of nearly $3 billion if we didn’t believe in Liberia and its people,” ArcelorMittal’s Lakshmi Mittal commented, stressing the company’s long-term confidence in the country.

Such an endorsement from a global industry leader sends a positive signal to international markets about West Africa’s potential as an investment destination. For African governments, the Liberia project highlights the importance of creating a conducive environment for investors while also negotiating agreements that ensure local benefits.

The expansion’s regional integration angle also resonates with continental initiatives like the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), which aims to bolster cross-border infrastructure and industrial supply chains.

By developing a mining and transport corridor that could eventually service multiple countries, Liberia is helping lay groundwork for West African economic corridors that could link mines, power plants, ports, and cities across borders.

The project’s focus on value addition and skills transfer aligns with the African Union’s Agenda 2063 goals of inclusive growth and sustainable development.

It offers a case study to other resource-rich nations – such as Guinea, Sierra Leone, or Ghana, on how investing in local processing facilities and infrastructure can amplify the economic impact of natural resources.

For investors and companies, ArcelorMittal Liberia’s venture underscores the opportunities in Africa’s drive toward industrialization: building mines and plants not only to extract resources, but to refine and export higher-value products and ultimately, finished products.

It also shows that strong ESG practices and community engagement can go hand-in-hand with profitability, thereby de-risking large projects.

In sum, the newly inaugurated Tokadeh concentrator stands as a landmark of African industrial progress, a shining example of resilience, ambition, and partnership.

Liberia has emerged from the shadows of conflict and crisis to reclaim its place on the global mining map, this time with a focus on sustainable growth and shared prosperity.

The nation is now poised to export not just raw materials, but innovation, skills, and a narrative of success. As the first high-grade iron ore shipments from the concentrator set sail later this year, a powerful message reverberates across the continent: Africa is open for business and ready to lead in transforming its natural wealth into lasting development.

News Hub Creator2d

Interior Minister, Alhaji Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak has confirmed that, military personnel who were body guards for Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Jean Mensah has been withdrawn.

In an interview on JoyNews midday news, the interior explained that, the decision to withdraw the military security detail for the EC Chair is based on a new policy not use military personnel as personal body guards for civilians.

He indicated that, the EC Chair still has police protection despite the withdrawal of military personnel as body guards at her residence.

The Interior Minister is of the view that, the use of military personnel as body guards for civilians sends a wrong perception as the duty of the military is protect the territorial borders of the Country, whiles the police is to protect citizens and maintain law and order.

He further added that, using military personnel as protection sometimes reduce the numbers of military who are needed to perform other important duties.

His comments comes in the wake of reports that, the security detail of Mrs. Jean Mensah has been withdrawn by the Mahama led administration.

In the erstwhile administration, the EC boss was protected by military personnel rather than police officers as it is now.

The decision to use military personnel to protect the EC Chair in the erstwhile administration was creticised by some Ghanaians, including the then opposition NDC.

Nana Agradaa’s Lawyer Shócks Ghanaians As He Reveals The Truth About Her Case

0

Private legal practitioner Theophilus Donkor has broken his silence regarding his withdrawal from the legal team defending self-proclaimed evangelist Nana Agradaa, citing alleged misconduct by one of the judges involved in the case.

In an interview on Metro TV, Donkor detailed his reasons for stepping away from the high-profile case involving Nana Agradaa, legally known as Patricia Asiedu. He claimed that his ability to represent his client was severely undermined by persistent hostility from a presiding judge, creating what he described as an “unworkable” courtroom environment.

“I had to withdraw from the case because a particular judge continually threatened and clashed with me during proceedings,” Donkor said. “It became impossible to continue under such circumstances.”

Donkor also criticized the 15-year prison sentence handed to Nana Agradaa, describing it as disproportionately severe. He revealed plans for an appeal, suggesting that the defense believes there is a strong basis to challenge both the conviction and sentencing.

Nana Agradaa, who leads the Heaven Way Champion International Ministry, was convicted by the Accra Circuit Court on charges of defrauding by false pretenses and promoting charlatanic practices. The charges followed a 2022 incident where she was seen in a viral broadcast promising to double individuals’ money using spiritual powers. Several victims came forward during the trial, reporting significant financial losses after being enticed by her televised claims.

The court concluded that Agradaa had engaged in a deliberate scheme to deceive the public, using her religious platform to exploit vulnerable individuals for personal gain.

Donkor’s allegations regarding judicial conduct have added a new layer of controversy to the case, prompting broader discussions about the integrity of court proceedings and the treatment of legal practitioners in Ghana’s justice system.

As public interest in the case continues, Agradaa’s legal team is expected to formally file an appeal in the coming weeks, challenging both the conviction and the length of the sentence.

The case has reignited national debate over the regulation of spiritual leaders and the growing concern over fraudulent religious practices in the country.

Police probe killing of Bimbilla SHS student during fire festival

0

The police in the Northern Region have launched investigations into the tragic killing of Fatima Abukari, an 18-year-old student of Bimbilla Senior High School.

She was shot during the Fire Festival in Bimbilla, Nanumba North Municipality, on Saturday, July 5.

Fatima was struck by a stray bullet while patrons of the festival were marching in a torchlit procession toward the Wampu Dam.

She has since been buried in accordance with Islamic customs.

According to Chief Inspector Lukman Neindoo, Northern Regional Police Public Relations Officer, officers visited the crime scene on the morning of July 6 to gather evidence. BB cartridges were recovered at the scene, but no arrests have been made so far.

Chief Inspector Neindoo cautioned the public against the possession and use of unlicensed weapons, particularly firearms.

He emphasised that the ban on fire festival celebrations in certain areas was not arbitrary.

“It is not for nothing that the Overlord of Dagbon, Yaa Naa Abukari II, banned the celebrations in the Tamale Metropolis and Sagnarigu Municipality,” he stated.

“No one has the right to carry an assault rifle unless it is licensed for a lawful purpose.”

The police say a press conference will be held soon to provide updates on the incident and other security issues in the region, including the recent killing of a youth group member in Tamale.

The fire festival had been partially banned in parts of the Northern Region due to heightened security concerns.

Despite the restrictions, celebrations continued in some communities, including Bimbilla, where the tragic incident occurred.

NPP, Minority caucus to converge at EOCO over detention of Abdul-Wahab Hanan

0

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the Minority in Parliament will today, Monday, July 7, 2025, converge at the offices of the Economic and Organised Office (EOCO) to protest the continued detention of the former Chief Executive Officer of the National Food Buffer Stock Company (NAFCO), Abdul-Wahab Hanan.

The party has accused EOCO of violating his human rights, insisting that the conditions of his bail have already been met.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s Newsroom on Sunday, NPP National Youth Organiser Salam Mustapha criticised EOCO’s handling of the matter, calling on the agency to seek justice through the courts rather than keeping the former CEO in custody.

“If Hannan has done something wrong, put him before a court of law and let him have his day. We will go to the EOCO office together with some MPs, party sympathisers, and executives, and ask why. We want to know why he is still being kept in the station when the conditions that you put on him have been met.”

He further expressed frustration over EOCO’s lack of communication and what he described as punitive detention, despite the bail evaluation exceeding the required threshold.

“The evaluation report that we have far exceeds those bill conditions. When everything was finished, we were calling Raymond Archer, his deputies, to come and just go through and grant the young man bail to go home, none of them picked their phone calls. So, he has been left there as punishment for exactly what we do not know.”

Abdul-Wahab Hanan was arrested by EOCO on June 25, together with his wife, over alleged financial crimes. While his wife has since been granted bail set at GH¢30 million, Hanan remains in custody, yet to fully satisfy the conditions of his GH¢60 million bail.

The arrest, part of a wider investigation into suspected economic crimes at NAFCO, was carried out simultaneously in Accra and Tamale, and also led to the apprehension of a third, unidentified individual believed to be connected to the case.

Koku Anyidoho endorses transformation of National Cathedral

Founder and CEO of the Atta Mills Institute for Transformational Development, Koku Anyidoho Founder and CEO of the Atta Mills Institute for Transformational Development, Koku Anyidoho

Founder and CEO of the Atta Mills Institute for Transformational Development, Koku Anyidoho, has thrown his support behind the Mahama administration’s decision to convert the stalled National Cathedral project into a National Cultural Convention Center under its proposed 24-hour economic plan.

In an exclusive interview, the respected public policy advocate described the move as a pragmatic and forward-thinking decision that puts the national interest above partisan politics.

“For me, whether it is a National Cathedral or a National Cultural Center, once the structure carries the national flag and serves the people of Ghana, I am fully in support of it,” Anyidoho stated.

The announcement has sparked widespread debate, especially given the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) earlier fierce opposition to the National Cathedral project while in opposition.

The NDC’s decision to re-purpose the project while in government has raised eyebrows, with some accusing the party of hypocrisy.

However, Anyidoho defended the change in stance, noting that ensuring the structure does not become yet another abandoned project is a victory for national development.

“That prime land is too strategic for our national spatial development. I’m simply relieved that the project will remain a national asset and not be handed over to private developers. That alone makes this decision worth supporting,” he emphasised.

Reflecting on the legacy of the late President John Evans Atta Mills, Anyidoho recalled his former boss’s belief in national cohesion.

“As we approach July 24, which marks 13 years since we lost President Atta Mills, I remember his words: there is more that unites us than divides us. I see this decision in that light, it is about bringing the nation together, whether through religion or culture,” he said.

He added that while the previous administration sought to use the project to promote religious unity, the current administration’s focus on cultural unity is equally valid, so long as the project serves the supreme interest of Ghana.

When asked about criticisms that the NDC is now embracing a project it once harshly opposed, Anyidoho dismissed the idea that such political shifts are inherently negative.

“I leave those who want to play petty partisan politics to continue,” he remarked.

“I choose to look at this issue from a nationalistic, patriotic, and statesmanlike perspective. As long as the project is not left to rot and continues under the Ghanaian flag, I pray it is completed for the benefit of current and future generations.”

Anyidoho stressed that adjusting policy positions based on the realities of governance should not be viewed as weakness but as strength, rooted in honesty and practical leadership.

“The petty partisan politics is killing this dear country of ours,” he warned.

“Changing minds when faced with new realities is not a sign of failure. It’s a sign of responsible governance based on facts, not fiction.”

With the project now set to serve as a National Cultural Convention Center, Anyidoho’s comments underscore the importance of unity, continuity, and national focus in policymaking reminding all Ghanaians that the true measure of leadership lies not in political point-scoring, but in building legacies that serve the collective good.

NDC Party elders urged to resolve disputes in Assin Central Constituency

0

Concerned grassroots members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Assin Central, are urgently calling on party elders to intervene in an ongoing dispute that is threatening harmony in the party within the constituency.

The urgent plea was made by Emmanuel Abdoni, the NDC communications officer for Assin Central during a press briefing at Twifo Oil Palm Plantation Limited (TOPP) police station in the Twifo Atti Morkwa District.

He cited a recent controversy that erupted following President Mahama’s nomination of Charlotte Boakye as the Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE) for Assin Central.

The nomination sparked division among party members with allegations that Central Regional Chairman, Richard Asiedu allegedly rewarded people to kick against Boakye’s nomination.

Consequently, Boakye could not be confirmed for the position, he alleged.

Further compounding the issue, was the alleged case of three members of the party being taken to court by Asiedu and remanded in police custody for a week for organising a press conference to blame Asiedu for Boakye’s rejection.

Abdoni and other concerned members are now calling for the intervention of party elders nationwide to resolve the issue and secure the release of the three individuals.

Boakye on the other hand has also added her voice to the mediation calls, by pleading with the Vice President, Professor Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang to intervene.

She emphasised the need for unity to ensure the party remained strong and appealing to Ghanaians.

Daniel Gyetuah Gibson, a member of the Central Regional Council of Elders, on his part, also revealed frantic efforts made to mediate the dispute but to no avail, alleging that Asiedu was not ready for the resolution of the matter

He therefore called on the national elders to step in to prevent further deterioration of party unity in Assin Central.

Why Kalybos campaigned for NPP in 2024 elections

Popular Ghanaian comedian and actor, Richard Kweku Asante (L) Popular Ghanaian comedian and actor, Richard Kweku Asante (L)

Popular Ghanaian comedian and actor, Richard Kweku Asante, popularly known as Kalybos, has opened up about the personal reasons that influenced his decision to join the New Patriotic Party (NPP) campaign ahead of the 2024 general elections.

Speaking in an interview on Joy FM on July 5, 2025, Kalybos revealed that his support for the NPP was rooted in his belief in the transformative impact of the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy, a flagship initiative of the former current government.

Addressing public perceptions that celebrities often endorse political parties for financial gain or personal benefits, Kalybos was quick to dismiss such notions.

Kalybos recounted how, before the introduction of Free SHS, he was overwhelmed by the constant demands for financial assistance to pay school fees not only from his immediate family but also from his extended family and community members.

“Back then, the amount of money I spent on school fees was unbelievable, there is this public perception that once you appear on TV, you’re rich. So, people kept coming with school fee issues from family, from my mother’s side, from the community. It was endless,” he said.

The financial strain, he said, took a toll on his ability to save or invest in personal projects. At times, he found himself financially drained after meeting these obligations.

While admitting that there was a “little bit of selfishness” in his decision to support the Free SHS policy, Kalybos explained that his so-called selfishness stemmed from a desire to ease the financial burden that had weighed on him for years.

“If I could help promote this policy and make sure it stays, it meant I could save money and finally pursue projects I had put on hold.

“Before Free SHS, I become broke after paying fees in September. But with the policy in place, I finally had breathing space.”

“I have worked with both sides before, but this was something I personally saw the value in. It wasn’t just talk; it made a real difference in people’s lives and in mine too.”

‘Ato Essien is too intelligent for prison’

Ato Essien [L] and President John Mahama Ato Essien [L] and President John Mahama

Prophet Kofi Oduro, leader and founder of Alabaster International Ministry, has fervently pleaded with President John Dramani Mahama to grant clemency to jailed businessman and founder of the now-defunct Capital Bank, William Ato Essien.

The outspoken clergyman believes that Ato Essien, whom he describes as ‘too intelligent’ and highly intellectual, should not be held in prison

According to a post shared by popular X Account, Edhub, Prophet Oduro called for Ato Essien to be added to the list of persons to be pardoned by the President this year.

“Ato Essien is too intelligent for prison, and right now he’s facing a health challenge. Please, could he be added to those to be pardoned this year?” – Prophet Oduro is quoted as saying.

The man of God has joined the growing list of prominent individuals calling on President Mahama to show mercy to Ato Essien.

Recentlty, renowned Ghanaian satirist and television personality Kwaku Sintim-Misa, popularly known as KSM, made a passionate appeal to President John Mahama to grant clemency to Ato Essien.

Speaking during his programme The KSM Show, the experienced broadcaster expressed grave concern over the current health condition of Mr Essien, who is currently serving a custodial sentence.

According to KSM, the former bank owner suffered a serious accident while in prison, resulting in a severe spinal injury that has confined him to a wheelchair.

“Mr President, I beg you. Please, this man in my view has been wronged. He is languishing in jail. If you should go and visit Ato Essien right now, the man is in a wheelchair,” KSM said. “He had an accident while in jail, and I think he sustained a very severe spinal injury. So right now, the man is in extremely bad shape. He is in a wheelchair because he has a spinal problem… so many things.”

The veteran entertainer emphasized that his appeal was not based on personal friendship or sentiment, but rather on what he described as the “inhumane” nature of Mr. Essien’s current condition behind bars.

“I am using this platform to appeal to His Excellency. Please, you have the power of clemency. I am begging the President. I can use this platform for all Ghanaians to add their voices and plead that Ato Essien does not belong there,” KSM stated.

William Ato Essien, an entrepreneur and founder of First Capital Plus, which later evolved into Capital Bank, was sentenced to 15 years in prison by an Accra High Court on October 23, 2023, after being found guilty of stealing over GH¢90 million in liquidity support provided by the Bank of Ghana to Capital Bank.

He was initially given the opportunity to avoid a custodial sentence by agreeing to repay the GH¢90 million as restitution to the state. However, he failed to meet the payment terms agreed upon with the Attorney General and the court.

Essien paid GH¢30 million upfront in December 2022 but was unable to pay the remaining GH¢60 million in the agreed installments. His failure to fulfill the terms led the court to impose the custodial sentence.

Government inaugurates National Anti-Corruption Strategy working group

0

Julius Debrah, Chief of Staff at the Presidency, has inaugurated a working group to develop a new National Anti-Corruption Strategy, as part of concerted efforts to check widespread corruption in both public and private sectors.

The previous National Anti-Corruption Action Plan (NACAP) was passed by Parliament in 2014, during the first term of President John Dramani Mahama.

Debrah in his remarks during the inauguration of the Group at the Presidency in Accra, noted that destiny had, once again, bestowed on President Mahama the responsibility of shepherding the development of the second national anti-corruption strategy.

He said in the statement delivered by Ghana at the recent first resumed 16th Session of the Implementation Review Group (IRG) and the open-ended intergovernmental working group on the prevention of corruption at Vienna, Austria from 16th-20th June, some achievements of NACAP were reported.

He said the Implementation of NACAP led to an increased awareness of the havoc caused by corruption and available reporting mechanisms, including whistleblowing.

Furthermore, it led to an accelerated digitisation of financial services, revenue authorities, and ports and harbours, leading to improved efficiency and reduced discretion.

Others are an enhanced stability and soundness of the financial system through Financial Stability Council, making Ghana the second country after Mauritius to establish such a Council in sub-Saharan Africa.

In addition, it led to a reduction in sexual harassment and sextortion, supported by workplace-safe reporting mechanisms.

The report also mentioned the implementation of the National Anti-Money Laundering/Combatting the Financing of Terrorism and Proliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction (AML/CFT & P), Guidelines for Banks and Non-Bank Financial Institutions in Ghana.

Debrah said during this period, Ghana witnessed increased operational activity from key anti-corruption and law enforcement agencies such as the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), and the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), in both administrative and criminal investigation, prosecution, and asset tracing, seizure and recovery.

He said however, it was also worth noting that after Ghana’s best performing score of 48 per cent on the Corruption Perception Index (CPI) in 2014—the year the NACAP was passed by Parliament—the implementation of NACAP from 2015 2024, had coincided with a downward trending of the country’s CPI score to the current all-time low of 42 per cent in the last year of the NACAP.

Debrah said: “We have to reverse this trend, and I charge this group to ensure that the strategy does precisely that. This is consistent with the promise that His Excellency the President made to Ghanaians.”

He said accountability and the fight against corruption constitute a key pillar in the legacy term of President Mahama.

Debrah said the complexities of corruption that confront Ghanaians today equally requires a sophisticated approach to combating it.

This, he said, requires the application of technology, outside-the box thinking, effective legislation, independent anti-corruption institutions, a strong political will and a focused leadership to be able to uproot this canker from society.

The Chief of Staff noted that it was therefore their expectation that the design of the new National Anti-Corruption strategy should depart somewhat from the assumptions, programmes and implementation mechanisms of the previous NACAP to enable them to achieve meaningful, sustainable results within the shortest possible time.

He reiterated that ethics must be a key pillar in the development of the next National Anti-corruption Strategy because corruption was first and foremost a morale issue before legal.

He said the Strategy therefore ought to provide shock therapy to the anti-corruption space to set the anti-corruption fight to a beating, impactful rhythm.

The Chief of Staff said the National Anti-Corruption Strategy would be coordinated by the Office of the Presidential Advisor, National Anti-Corruption Programme (PANACP) working closely with his office through the Deputy Chief of Staff (Administration).

He said this would enable the President to track its implementation to ensure that the programme delivers on its mandate.

Debrah said the Office would work closely with principal implementing partners such as the office of the Attorney General, the Office of Special Prosecutor (OSP) and the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) to ensure that they confront the corruption menace that had eaten into their social fabric.

He expressed gratitude to CHRAJ for coordinating Ghana’s foremost anti-corruption plan in the last decade.

He assured them that the Office of the President would continue to work closely with them in promoting Human Rights and Administrative Justice in Ghana and beyond.

He expressed confidence in the technical expertise of the team that had been assembled to deliver Ghana’s next anti-corruption strategy.

“We therefore expect nothing less than your fullest commitment to the cause, so as to deliver an initial draft of the next National Anti-corruption Strategy by the 31st of August 2025,” he said.

Professor Francis Dodoo, Presidental Advisor for National Anti-Corruption Programme, said the initiative marks yet another decisive step by the President and the Government of Ghana in their collective resolve to eliminate corruption and its corrosive effect and to strengthen integrity, promote transparency, and uphold ethical governance at all levels of their national life.

Asante Kotoko extended has their dominance as the most successful club in the history of the President’s Cup on Sunday July 6, 2025, beating Hearts of Oak to claim a ninth trophy.

The record-extending triumph did not come easily as the Porcupine Warriors had to fight to come from behind to overcome their arch-rivals.

In a match filled with drama, including a goalkeeping blunder, an own goal, a missed penalty, and a disallowed goal, the Porcupine Warriors showed resilience to extend their unbeaten run against Hearts to six games.

Hamza Issah opened the scoring for Hearts of Oak in the first half, capitalising on a mistake by goalkeeper Mohamed Camara.

However, Kotoko responded strongly in the second half. Defender Konadu Yiadom turned a cross into his own net to bring the Porcupine Warriors level. Moments later, Kwame Opoku punished poor defending with a simple finish to make it 2-1.

Hearts thought they had equalised late on, but their goal was ruled out for offside, an incident that sparked protest from fans, with missiles thrown onto the pitch. Emmanuel Amankwah then missed a penalty that could have forced a shootout.

After the victory on Sunday, Kotoko have now won the President’s Cup nine times; in 1973, 1984, 2004, 2005, 2008, 2016, 2017, 2019, 2025,
