Over 2,000 CHPS compounds to be constructed in the next four years – Kwakye Ofosu

Felix Kwakye Ofosu is the Minister of State in charge of Government Communications Felix Kwakye Ofosu is the Minister of State in charge of Government Communications

The Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has stated that the John Dramani Mahama government will construct over 2,000 Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) facilities, popularly called CHPS compounds.

According to him, this will be achieved through a government directive requiring every district in the country to construct two CHPS compounds every year, using a share of their District Assembly Common Fund (DACF).

He said that under this requirement, over 600 CHPS compounds are expected to be constructed across the country every year, starting from 2025.

“Each district is required to construct two new CHPS compounds this year, each district. So if you put that together, we are talking in the sense of almost close to 600 CHPS compounds that will be put up this year alone, or at least work on them will start this year.

“If we maintain the tempo, that should give us over 2,000 CHPS compounds in the next four years,” he said while addressing the media in a video shared by GHOne TV on June 29, 2025.

He added that the move would be “a significant step towards improving healthcare services for the people of Ghana.”

World Bank targets boost in West Africa power trade

The World Bank plans to strengthen electricity trade across Africa The World Bank plans to strengthen electricity trade across Africa

The World Bank has outlined plans to strengthen electricity trade across West Africa, building on years of investments in critical power infrastructure.

Speaking at an MoU signing between Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire on June 27, 2025, Senior Energy Specialist at the World Bank, Maame Taboah Ankor, noted that the Bank has been instrumental in financing the physical infrastructure now integrated into the West Africa regional power pool.

“For the past couple of years, the Bank has been very fundamental in financing all the physical infrastructure that we can now say is part of the West Africa regional power pool,” she stated.

She explained that the focus is now shifting toward advancing electricity trade to fully leverage these infrastructure investments.

“We are moving towards a significant step where we advance to the trade, which is, for us, the soft side, the essential connection needed to bridge the physical infrastructure with the soft elements that ensure continuous trade on the lines we have financed,” Ankor said.

She expressed confidence that with strong leadership and effective partnerships, the initiative would deliver lasting benefits to the people of West Africa.

“I believe with your continuous leadership and partnership, we can achieve a lasting impact for the people of West Africa,” she added.

Modified Taxation takes of July 1, anchors govt revenue drive

0

The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has disclosed that key policies in the country’s tax administration laws are expected to be implemented from July 1, 2025, to boost domestic revenue drive for the government.

These include the Modified Taxation Scheme, VAT on Real Estate, and VAT on Non-Life Insurance.

Modified Taxation Scheme (MTS) – Simplified Approach for Informal Sector.

The MTS introduces a flexible framework targeting micro, small and medium businesses across the country. This is in line with the Income Tax Act, 2015 (Act 896).

Acting Commissioner-General of the GRA, Anthony Kwasi Sarpong, clarified in a recent media engagement that the scheme is not an additional tax but a simplified method of calculating personal income tax for eligible traders and entrepreneurs.

“We, as GRA, are tax implementors, and as the President has announced and reiterated by the Minister of Finance, the country must mobilise more revenue so that we can take care of critical budgetary allocations, as many of the donor partners have closed their doors to Ghana. What we need to do is to look at the existing revenue handles and implement them to the latter.

“We believe that if we’re able to do these, then we can seal many of the revenue loopholes that are being closed onto us as a country. I can assure you that these are not new taxes and it is not intended to overburden Ghanaians but rather to support the resetting of the economy,” he noted.

Key Highlights of the Scheme:

• Eligibility: Ghanaian residents earning income solely from business activities within the country.

• Tax Categories:
o Presumptive Tax Based on Instalments (PTI): Fixed quarterly payments (up to GH¢45) for businesses with an annual turnover below GH¢20,000.
o Presumptive Tax Based on Turnover (PTT): A flat 3% rate for businesses earning between GH¢20,000 and GH¢500,000 annually.
o Modified Cash Basis (MCB): For businesses exceeding GH¢20,000, applying graduated rates with allowable deductions.

• Multiple payment options, including mobile money, USSD codes (*222#), and bank deposits.

• Simplified registration via GRA offices or a dedicated mobile app.

Alongside the Modified Taxation Scheme, GRA is implementing several other strategic initiatives designed to plug revenue leakages and broaden the tax base. These measures form part of the government’s comprehensive strategy to reduce reliance on debt financing and strengthen domestic revenue mobilisation.

The Special Voluntary Disclosure Program (SVDP), which was rolled out in 2024, is being deepened. It is an initiative that seeks to give expression to the income tax law and residents who earn incomes abroad. This program provides an opportunity for these persons to voluntarily disclose incomes earned abroad, which they haven’t paid tax on, without incurring penalties.

VAT on the Rental of Immovable Property and the Supply of Immovable Property by Estate Developers will also be implemented in accordance with the provisions of the Value Added Tax (VAT) Amendment Act, 2023 (Act 1107), all estate developers are to charge VAT on the supply of immovable property.

Estate developers must charge a 5% VAT on:
• Immovable property by an estate developer calculated on the taxable supply
• Immovable property for rental purposes, other than for accommodation in a dwelling or a commercial rental establishment

A 1% COVID-19 levy is also applicable on the supply of immovable property.
Additionally, an appointed withholding agent who fails to charge and account for the tax to the Commissioner-General by the 15th of the month following the due date shall be liable to pay the VAT that should have been withheld, along with a penalty of thirty per cent (30%) of the amount.
Exemptions for residential dwellings and agricultural properties.

VAT on Non-Life Insurance

As stipulated in the VAT (Amendment) Act, 2023 (Act 1107), Insurance premiums covered for VAT purposes include fire, marine, liability, property, indemnity, engineering, travel, burglary, personal accident and workmen’s compensation insurance.

Insurance companies must take note and charge a 15% VAT on all insurance premiums covered under this provision.

To make the implementation more effective, the companies are expected to:
• Update their accounting and invoicing systems to incorporate the VAT;
• Train staff on the application and reporting on the VAT;
• Communicate proactively with clients about the changes; and
• Ensure timely registration for VAT, if not already registered

The combination of these measures represents a balanced approach to revenue generation. The Authority is creating multiple pathways for compliance while ensuring critical sectors contribute their fair share.

Women Caucus of Parliament declare support for Vice-President Opoku-Agyemang

0

The Women’s Caucus in Parliament has pledged its full support to Vice-President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, promising to assist her in delivering on her national mandate and advancing inclusive governance.

Led by its President and Member of Parliament (MP) for Ada, Comfort Doyoe Cudjoe-Ghansah, the group paid a courtesy call on the Vice-President at the Jubilee House on Friday, June 27, 2025.

The visit brought together 40 female MPs from both sides of the House to express their solidarity and commitment to the first female Vice-President in Ghana’s history.

Addressing the Vice-President, Mrs Cudjoe-Ghansah described her elevation to the high office as “not just a personal achievement—it is a national turning point.” She added: “You have broken ceilings and lifted the aspirations of many. We are here not just to celebrate you, but to tell you that we are solidly behind you.”

She praised the Vice-President’s leadership, stating that her presence had brought a sense of inclusiveness and hope for Ghanaian women. “Where there is a woman, there is peace. Where there is a woman, there is care. And where there is a woman, there is abundance,” she noted.

The Vice-President of the Caucus and Deputy Minority Leader, Patricia Appiagyei, MP for Asokwa, also urged Professor Opoku-Agyemang to ensure the effective implementation of the Affirmative Action Act, which was passed in July 2024.

She reaffirmed the caucus’s commitment to working collaboratively with the Vice-President to achieve key policy goals.

Responding to the show of support, Vice-President Opoku-Agyemang expressed her deep appreciation to the group and praised the increasing representation of women in Ghana’s legislature.

“We are very proud of the numbers we have now—forty women in Parliament. That’s no small feat,” she said.

She recounted efforts made during the campaign to support female candidates, noting that she had personally visited eight constituencies where women were contesting.

She urged the MPs to leverage their positions to mentor young women and promote inclusive leadership in their constituencies.

“Now that we are here, what are we doing with the opportunity?” she asked. “It cannot just be about us. We must use this chance to help others, especially young women and girls in our constituencies.”

The Vice-President also encouraged the caucus to reconnect with female aspirants who lost their seats in the last elections and explore ways to involve them in the national development agenda.

She pledged to deepen collaboration with the caucus in shaping policies that promote gender equality and inclusive governance.

Deloris Frimpong Manso, popularly known as Delay, a renowned Ghanaian media personality, has shared the story of how she started her own TV show, “The Delay Show.” Speaking at the AYA Women Summit, Delay recounted her journey in the media industry, highlighting the challenges she faced and the determination that drove her to succeed.

Delay began her radio career at 17 with Live FM, where she worked for a year and a half before taking a break. She later returned to work with Meridian FM and then Adom FM, where she hosted a program from 12:00 am to 4:00 am without pay, as she wasn’t considered a staff member. However, her time at Adom FM came to an abrupt end when Fred Nuamah informed her that her services were no longer needed.

Undeterred, Delay continued to pursue her passion for media. She worked with Top Radio from 2005 to 2007, playing test transmissions, and later joined Oman FM, where she spent 9 years. During her time at Oman FM, Delay was introduced to television by Felix Anna, who had noticed her during an audition for a news caster position at TV3.

Delay’s television debut was on an entertainment show in Akan, which she did for a season. However, she was let go after demanding payment for her services. Despite this setback, Delay’s sister encouraged her to start her own show. This encouragement proved to be a turning point in Delay’s career, leading to the creation of “The Delay Show,” which has become a household name in Ghana.

Through her journey, Delay has demonstrated resilience and determination, overcoming numerous challenges to achieve success in the media industry. “The Delay Show” has become a platform for entertainment, discussion, and inspiration, showcasing Delay’s talent and dedication to her craft.

The greatest betrayals in Ghana’s history

0

Ghana has seen many great leaders who placed the country on the world stage, with some fighting vigorously to secure the freedom Ghanaians enjoy today.

History shows that these leaders did not have smooth journeys and often suffered betrayal, sometimes at the hands of people closest to them.

Historian and lawyer Yaw Anokye Frimpong, in a recent interview on Max TV, provided historical details of some of the greatest betrayals the country has witnessed.

Below are some of these great leaders and the betrayals they suffered:

Kaku Ackah

One of the great leaders of pre-independent Ghana who was betrayed, according to Anokye Frimpong, was Kaku Ackah I, the great-grandfather of Ghana’s first president, Dr Kwame Nkrumah.

Kaku Ackah I, the chief of Nzema in the 1840s, was betrayed by his own people after refusing to accept British rule by declining to sign the Bond of 1844.

He refused to sign the bond because he believed that although the land would remain theirs, the people would be ruled by British laws, effectively selling their freedom to the colonialists.

Kaku Ackah I not only refused to sign but openly called the other chiefs who signed the bond “fools” for surrendering their freedom, which led to an attack by the British.

During the conflict, his own soldiers, who had secretly conspired with the British, retreated, leading to Kaku Ackah’s arrest.

At his trial, Kaku Ackah impressed the British when he declared that, as a sovereign chief, he could not subject himself to a foreign court and insisted they should kill him instead.

Although initially sentenced to death, the British reduced his punishment to solitary confinement. He died after six years in prison.

The British described Kaku Ackah as a great man who defended his conscience. He was buried at the Cape Coast Castle, becoming the only black person to be buried there.

Prempeh I

Nana Prempeh I (L) and the Current Asantehene

According to Anokye Frimpong, another great betrayal was suffered by Nana Prempeh I, the 13th Asantehene.

He explained that Kwame Tua, a former sub-chief of Asanteman, who remains disliked to this day, betrayed Nana Prempeh I by revealing the location of the sacred Golden Stool to the British.

During the governorship of Maxwell, the British actively searched for the Golden Stool, believing it would bring them wealth and power in the region.

Kwame Tua provided information about the stool’s whereabouts and those connected to it, which eventually led to the arrest of Nana Prempeh I.

While under British protection, Kwame Tua further betrayed Prempeh by having affairs with the wives of the imprisoned Asantehene and even publicly marrying one of them.

Dr James Emmanuel Kwegyir Aggrey

Dr Kwegyir Aggrey is on Ghana’s five cedi note:

Another betrayal, according to Anokye Frimpong, involved Dr James Emmanuel Kwegyir Aggrey.

Dr Kwegyir Aggrey, who held two doctorate degrees, was so brilliant that he was envied by the whites, who could not match his excellence.

His remarkable work with the Phelps Stokes Fund, a foundation focused on Africa’s development, drew international attention.

Anokye Frimpong claimed that when white officials realised Dr Aggrey’s growing influence, they saw him as a threat.

In 1927, after returning to the United States to present his project reports, Dr Aggrey was allegedly poisoned and died at the age of 51.

Raphael Grey Armattoe

Anokye Frimpong also recounted the betrayal of Raphael Grey Armattoe, a brilliant scientist and political activist who died at just 41 years old.

Armattoe was the first African to be nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1948 and finished second for the Nobel Prize in Science and Physiology.

He invented a medication that saved millions of Nigerians from ringworm and blood diseases.

Armattoe, a passionate advocate for the unification of British and French Togoland (modern-day Eweland), was the first person to write a book in three international languages, English, French, and German.

According to the historian, Armattoe was poisoned shortly after delivering a speech at the United Nations on Ewe unification. He was taken to Germany for treatment, but did not survive.

Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah

Dr Kwame Nkrumah (L) and his foreign affairs minister, Dr Alex Quaison-Sackey

Finally, Anokye Frimpong said Ghana’s first president, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, was betrayed by his trusted confidant, Dr Alex Quaison-Sackey, who served as Nkrumah’s foreign affairs minister.

He alleged that Dr Quaison-Sackey played a key role in the CIA-backed plot that led to Nkrumah’s overthrow in February 1966.

According to the historian, Nkrumah deeply trusted Quaison-Sackey, who reassured him that he could safely travel without fearing a coup. However, Quaison-Sackey allegedly colluded with the CIA.

Anokye Frimpong claimed that the CIA promised to make Quaison-Sackey the next president of Ghana, which motivated his betrayal.

Akufo-Addo urges African countries to channel 30% of reserves into continental institutions

0

Ghana’s former President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has proposed that African nations allocate 30 per cent of their sovereign reserves to multilateral financial institutions within the continent.

According to him, this move would empower development finance institutions such as the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) and the African Development Bank (AfDB) to more effectively respond to Africa’s pressing development needs.

The statement echoed a proposal he first advanced to the African Union (AU) while serving as Ghana’s President and as the lead advocate for the AfCFTA, which has its Secretariat in Accra.

Speaking on Friday, June 27, during a panel of former African Heads of State at the 2025 Afreximbank Annual Meetings in Nigeria, Akufo-Addo stressed that such a strategy could reshape Africa’s financial landscape.

He lamented that many African countries continue to deposit their reserves in foreign banks—often at negative interest rates—while struggling to finance critical infrastructure and development projects at home.

“The institutions we need to drive our development are not in our hands,” he said, emphasising the importance of financial sovereignty. “If we don’t control our financial institutions, we cannot sustainably fund our development.”

Akufo-Addo called for stronger collaboration to bolster Afreximbank and the AfDB, urging leaders to take bold steps beyond rhetoric. “We have to put our mouth where our thoughts are. Let’s make the decisions that will enable us to resolve our problems. We can’t do it just by talking,” he said.

He also criticised the continued delay in operationalising the African Central Bank, a long-standing proposal that has been discussed for over two decades. He argued that institutions such as the African Central Bank, African Investment Bank, and African Monetary Fund are critical to achieving the continent’s financial autonomy and accelerating development.

Highlighting the importance of Africa-owned financial institutions, he cited Afreximbank’s recent support for Ghana, which received US$750 million in financing at a time when it had lost access to international capital markets.

Banks wrote-off GH¢654.2m as bad debt in first four months of 2024

0

Governor of Bank of Ghana, Dr. Johnson Asiama

Banks in Ghana wrote off GH¢654.2 million as bad debt in the first four months of 2025.

According to the Domestic Money Bank Report by the Bank of Ghana, this is lower than the GH¢863.4 million recorded in April 2024 and GH¢1.087 billion in April 2022, respectively.

The provision for bad debt was classified as loan losses, depreciation & others.

The report pointed out that the industry’s exposure to credit risk, however, improved between April 2024 and April 2025, as indicated by a decline in the non-performing loan (NPL) ratio during the review period, but remained elevated in April 2025.

Similarly, the banking industry’s asset quality improved during the period under review. The NPL ratio reduced to 23.6% in April 2025, from 25.7% in April 2024.

When adjusted for the fully provisioned loan loss category, it declined to 9.0% in April 2025 from 11.1% in April 2024.

The decrease in the NPL ratio was attributable to the higher growth in total loans relative to the growth in NPL stock.

The industry’s NPL stock grew by 8.7% to GH¢21.7 billion in April 2025, up from GH¢20.0 billion in April 2024.

The decomposition of the NPL stock indicated that the private sector accounted for the larger share of non-performing loans, in line with its larger share of industry credit.

The proportion of NPLs attributable to the private sector picked up to 93.4% in April 2025, from 91.0% in April 2024, while that of the public sector decreased to 6.6% in April 2025, from 9.0% in a similar period 2024.

NPP used propaganda to paint NDC as a bad government

Mr Logic says NPP made NDC look bad through propaganda Mr Logic says NPP made NDC look bad through propaganda

Talent manager and entertainment pundit, Mr Logic, has stated that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is a political party with good intentions, but the New Patriotic Party (NPP) made it look otherwise through propaganda.

In a video that has been shared widely on social media, Mr Logic, who is known to be a sympathiser of the NPP, admitted that in the past, the leadership of the NPP used propaganda strategies to convince Ghanaians that the NDC was not a good party for governance.

He said this made people believe the NDC had nothing good to offer, even though that was not the reality. According to him, this negative perception was created by how well the NPP controlled the political narrative at the time.

“I think the NDC is a political party with a heart. Back in those days, you were made to think that the NDC was a bad government. We used to think like that because the NPP government was very good at propaganda. They made some of us think that NDC was not good until the hands of power changed,” he said.

Now that the NDC has returned to power, Mr Logic believes Ghanaians are beginning to see the party’s efforts in improving the country.

He added that he hopes the positive work being done by the NDC, led by John Dramani Mahama, will continue so that Ghana can see better days.

“Now look at what is happening in Ghana. I’m just hoping that things keep getting better. I want to salute John Dramani Mahama, the President of Ghana,” he added.

Speaking at the 2025 World Drug Day at the Accra International Conference Centre, Her Excellency, Vice President, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, called for the prevention of illicit drugs in the country.

She emphasised the importance of prevention in the fight against drug abuse and noted that Ghana has made progress against conventional narcotics but the shift to synthetic opioids demands adaptability.

“The evidence is clear, invest in prevention,” the Vice President said, highlighting the theme of World Drug Day 2025. “We must recognize the urgency of this issue and rise to the occasion to put in place appropriate and pragmatic preventive measures,’ she noted.

Professor Naana Opoku-Agyemang commended the Narcotics Control Commission for its dedication to combating drug abuse and illicit trafficking.

The Vice President urged stakeholders to support the Commission with the necessary tools, training, and resources to stay ahead of the evolving threats.

“We must also address substance use disorders with compassion,” the Vice President emphasised.

Newly appointed Afreximbank president, George Elombi Newly appointed Afreximbank president, George Elombi

The newly appointed President of the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank), George Elombi, has pledged to prioritise transforming Africa’s trade structure while investing in critical infrastructure such as seaport terminals and power stations.

His vision aims to sustain and deepen the bank’s mission of promoting intra-African trade and development.

Speaking at a press conference after his unanimous appointment during the Afreximbank Annual Meetings in Abuja, Elombi reaffirmed his commitment to upholding the bank’s founding treaty, with a renewed focus on strengthening Africa’s trade systems.

“To change the structure of our trade so that we can confront development challenges head-on, a process we have already begun in recent years we must continue with determination,” Elombi said.

He outlined plans to focus on infrastructure that directly supports trade, including export processing zones, seaport terminals, power stations, and the development of human capital.

“We must address the export processing zones, the seaport terminals, the power stations, and the infrastructure that underpins them, along with the human resources and investment capital needed to deliver results,” he stated.

He further added that, “When these elements are in place, our continent will be transformed.”

Former NPP Ashanti Regional Chair aspirant calls for unity ahead of internal polls

0

A leading member and former Ashanti Regional Chairman aspirant of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Odeneho Kweku Appiah, has urged party leaders to put aside religious, tribal, and economic divisions in the interest of building a unified and resilient party ahead of the 2028 elections.

Delivering the keynote address at the NPP’s National Chairmen Conference held at the Longford Royal Center in Kumasi, Mr. Appiah emphasized unity, discipline, and reform as critical to the party’s success. The conference was held under the theme, “Building Momentum: The Role of NPP Constituency Chairmen in Uplifting the Party Towards 2028 and Beyond.”

Top party figures including the 2024 presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, and former Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong, were in attendance.

Mr. Appiah called on party leadership to prioritise collective goals over individual ambition and work to overcome internal divisions.

He also called for reforms to the party’s leadership qualification structure, advocating that those who have served at the polling station or constituency level be given the opportunity to ascend to regional and national leadership roles.

“We have a great party to protect, promote, rebuild, reorganize and maintain its integrity,” he declared.

He reiterated the need for strong party unity and strategic rebuilding efforts to recapture power in the 2028 general elections.

Why wedding rings are worn on the fourth finger of the left hand

0

Have you ever wondered why wedding rings are worn on the fourth finger of the left hand?

This is something common in Western culture and something many of us grew up seeing.

The main reason comes from ancient Rome. The Romans believed that a special vein, called the vena amoris or “vein of love,” runs directly from the fourth finger on the left hand to the heart.

Ghana’s Ibrahim Fuseni delighted after breaking 100m 10-second barrier

0

Ghanaian sprinter Ibrahim Fuseni has expressed immense joy after clocking a sub-10 second time for the first time in his career.

The 22-year-old stormed to victory in the men’s 100m at the ATX Sprint Classic in Texas on Saturday, recording a wind-assisted time of 9.85 seconds (+2.4 m/s).

He finished ahead of Americans David Foster and Dapriest Hogans, who both clocked 9.95 seconds to place second and third, respectively.

Reflecting on the performance, Fuseni revealed that a lesson from his previous race helped him push through the finish this time.

“In my last race, I eased up with about 30 meters to go.

“After reviewing the footage, I realized I had the potential to break the 10-second barrier if I ran through the line. So this time, I made sure not to hold back.

“It feels incredible to finally do it—even with the slight tailwind.”

Fuseni has been in impressive form throughout the season and now has his sights set on qualifying for the World Championships in Tokyo later this year, aiming to become the third Ghanaian sprinter, after Abdul Rasheed Saminu and Benjamin Azamati, to secure a spot at the global event.

US should not host 2026 World Cup – Fans fume after prolonged suspension of Chelsea-Benfica game

US President Donald Trump (L) engaging FIFA President Gianni Infantino (R) on football matters US President Donald Trump (L) engaging FIFA President Gianni Infantino (R) on football matters

Social media was abuzz with outrage as football fans expressed anger over the prolonged suspension of Chelsea’s round of 16 match against Benfica during the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, due to adverse weather conditions in the United States.

The London-based club was leading 1-0, thanks to Reece James’ goal, until the 85th minute when the match was suspended for nearly two hours due to severe weather at the stadium.

Initially, the game was expected to resume within 30 minutes, but tournament regulations require that in the event of a storm or thunderstorm, the match must remain suspended until weather conditions are deemed safe.

The intensity of the storm forced match officials to delay the game significantly, taking the contest deep into the night.

When play resumed, Malo Gusto’s handball in the box handed Benfica a penalty, which Ángel Di María converted to equalise.

Chelsea, however, capitalised on their numerical advantage after Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni was sent off, scoring three more goals through Nkunku, Pedro Neto, and Dewsbury-Hall to seal a commanding 4-1 victory.

The long suspension sparked furious reactions from fans online, with many criticising the decision to host such an important tournament in a country where weather conditions can severely disrupt matches.

Some fans went as far as to call for the United States to be stripped of the rights to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup if solutions are not found to prevent similar interruptions.

Others took aim at FIFA, accusing the governing body of failing to implement proactive measures to mitigate such risks and putting the safety of players and supporters at risk.

However, FIFA official and former Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger defended the decision, saying that the weather protocols in place are designed to prioritise the safety of everyone involved.

Ghanaian musician Kuami Eugene has stated that despite his mainstream success in secular music, he still considers himself a minister of God.

In an interview with Doreen Avio, the award-winning highlife artiste explained that his journey began in the church, where he was groomed both spiritually and musically. According to him, his identity as a gospel minister has not changed.

“Sometimes I see a post on social media, and somebody wants to share something—Eugene Marfo will just pop up. I’m still a minister of God, and the transition started from the church. The church taught me everything I know—how to play the piano, guitar, and everything. While I was in school, I was still doing music and playing drums for the church. I was doing music, but the push wasn’t there like I’m getting now,” he said.

Kuami Eugene also shared how a trip to the Volta Region for a gospel event played a key role in changing the course of his life and career. Invited by a friend who was a pupil teacher at the time, the trip became a turning point.

“She was a pupil teacher, and she invited me for a three-day convention with her church. I was Minister Eugene Marfo then. That was actually where I received my first pay, so shout out to that female friend of mine,” he recalled.

Following that experience, he was selected for MTN Hitmaker, where he emerged as second runner-up before being signed by Lynx Entertainment. That marked the beginning of his rise in Ghana’s music industry.

He credited God, his family, and key mentors like Richie Mensah and Eric Goka for their support in his journey.

Kuami Eugene, born Eugene Marfo, has since become one of Ghana’s most prominent musicians, known for hit songs such as , , , and .

He has won several awards, including Highlife Artiste of the Year and Artiste of the Year at the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards.

He is currently promoting his latest single titled .

Ugandan leader Yoweri Museveni, 80, to seek reelection

0

Ugandan leader Yoweri Museveni has confirmed he intends to contest in next year’s presidential election, potentially extending his rule in the East African country to nearly half a century.

In a post on the X platform late on Saturday, Museveni said he had “expressed my interest in running for… the position of presidential flag bearer,” for his ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party.

The 80-year-old has been the ruler of Uganda since 1986, when he seized power after leading a five-year guerrilla war.

The ruling party has changed the constitution twice in the past to allow Museveni to extend his rule, and rights activists have accused him of using security forces and patronage to maintain his grip on power. He denies the accusation.

Museveni said he is seeking reelection to grow the country to a “$500 billion economy in the next five years.” Uganda’s GDP currently stands at approximately $66 billion, according to the Ministry of Finance.

The country will hold its presidential election next January, when voters will also elect lawmakers.

Museveni’s closest opponent is expected to be pop star-turned-politician Bobi Wine, who came second in the 2021 presidential election and has already confirmed his intention to run again in 2026.

Wine, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi, rejected the 2021 results, saying his victory had been stolen through ballot stuffing, intimidation by security forces, and other irregularities.

BAMAKO, June 27 (Xinhua/GNA) — More than 128 tons of narcotics were incinerated on Thursday in Mali, as part of the observance of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, the Central Office for Narcotics Control (OCS) announced on Friday.

The incinerated substances were seized across Malian territory between June 27, 2024, and June 26, 2025, and included psychotropic drugs, counterfeit medicines, hookah devices, and drug-related accessories, the OCS said in a press release.

The market value of these substances is estimated in the tens of billions of CFA francs (10 billion CFA francs is approximately 17.8 million U.S. dollars), the statement added.

“This incineration operation aims to show the public that these dangerous substances, can only be destroyed through incineration. They are burned to protect the health of our population from the harmful effects of their consumption,” OCS Director Fousseny Keita was quoted in the statement.

“Mali is considered a transit country for narcotics and psychotropic substances,” he noted, expressing the regret that much of this trafficking is carried out by Malians, most of whom are young people aged between 15 and 45.

Nigerian Super Falcons Defeat Ghana 3:1 in Friendly

0

Super Falcons of Nigeria on Sunday defeated their Ghanian rival three goals to one 3:1 to show their superiority in a resounding victory. This is a preparatory match towards the 2024 Women’s African Cup of Nations

This match is coming after Following a  goalless draw against Portugal in Lisbon. The Super Falcons has shown their ready heading into continental battle.

Ghana, meanwhile, entered the fixture in high spirits, having posted back-to-back wins over Malawi (3-1) and Benin Republic (4-2) as they continue their revival under new leadership.

The opening half-hour saw both sides trade possession in an evenly contested affair.

But it was Nigeria who eventually took control, with forward Chinwendu Ihezuo breaking the deadlock in the 34th minute — her second goal for the national team.

Just before half-time, Asisat Oshoala doubled Nigeria’s lead from the penalty spot, calmly converting after a foul inside the box. The goal marked a personal milestone for the Barcelona striker, her first for Nigeria since October 2023 and her first for club or country in 2025.

Buoyed by their momentum, the Super Falcons came out firing in the second half.

Within five minutes of the restart, Rasheedat Ajibade extended the lead to 3-0 with a confident finish — her third goal in just two appearances, having netted a brace against Cameroon earlier this month.

Ghana began to threaten as Nigeria eased off the pace.

Midfielder Evelyn Badu thought she had pulled one back, only for her effort to be ruled out for offside. But the Black Queens eventually got their reward in the 88th minute when Alice Kusi converted from the penalty spot to notch a deserved consolation goal.

The Super Falcons saw out the win comfortably despite the late goal, in a morale-boosting result as they turn their focus to their WAFCON opener on July 6 against the Northern African heavyweights Tunisia

King Paluta hurls insults at guest over reaction to his performance at All White Boat Party in London

Ghanaian musician King Paluta has come under fire on social media after angrily insulting a guest who reportedly did not enjoy his performance at an event in London.

The incident occurred during the All White Boat Party, where the Aseda hitmaker was one of the performers. In a video shared on social media, King Paluta was seen pausing his performance to hurl insults at a female guest who appeared unimpressed with his act.

Reports suggest that the guest was not vibing with his performance and even signalled for the Aseda hitmaker to leave the stage.

This did not sit well with King Paluta, who immediately responded with harsh words.

“I am here because of my fans. She can’t stand there and give me that facial reaction. If you don’t give a f** about me, I don’t give a f** about you either. Your ugly wig,” he said during the outburst.

Despite efforts by some people in the crowd to calm him down, King Paluta insisted on expressing his anger, saying he needed to “free his mind.”

After the incident, he continued his performance with his song ‘For the Popping’, and many people at the front of the crowd were seen dancing and enjoying the show.

However, the video of his outburst has gone viral, sparking backlash from social media users who criticised him for being unprofessional.

One X user wrote, “Very, very unprofessional. Tsww… so he expects people to always jam to his songs when performing??? What if she was tired? Does he expect everyone to fall in love with his songs? Not everyone will like the songs you release. He should know this and stop creating unnecessary scenes.”

Another added, “Paluta should relax, and as an artiste, he should know there’s always criticism and not everyone will like you. So why rain insults on someone because of criticism? He should just be careful—some people can cause your entire career to go down.”

What CIA documents say about Quaison-Sackey’s role in Kwame Nkrumah’s overthrow

0

Dr Alex Quaison-Sackey (L) has been accused of selling out Dr Kwame Nkrumah to the CIA Dr Alex Quaison-Sackey (L) has been accused of selling out Dr Kwame Nkrumah to the CIA

President John Dramani Mahama recently disclosed that the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) of the United States (US) was responsible for the removal of Ghana’s first President, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah.

Speaking at the 68th Independence Day celebration at the Jubilee House on March 6, 2025, the president revealed that declassified US intelligence documents show the CIA orchestrated the coup that ousted Nkrumah while he was out of the country.

“The verdict of history is now loud and clear. Declassified documents from the United States archives reveal that this was a coup inspired and engineered by the CIA,” he said.

A GhanaWeb search of the CIA archives uncovered two documents that reference Dr Nkrumah’s Foreign Minister, Dr Alex Quaison-Sackey, who has long been accused of betraying Ghana’s first president to the agency.

Dr Quaison-Sackey was allegedly paid by the CIA and promised the presidency in exchange for his role in facilitating Nkrumah’s removal.

It is unclear whether the CIA documents found by GhanaWeb are the same ones President Mahama referenced, but one of the documents indicated that Nkrumah’s Foreign Affairs Minister was now aligned with the military leaders who had seized power.

“THE RECORD Morning Meeting of 3 March 1966 reported that in the wake of anti-Sukarno student demonstrations in Djakarta, Sukarno had closed the schools.

“Reported Nkrumah’s arrival in Guinea. There is some possibility that Nkrumah may be so detached from reality as to try to return to Accra. Ex-Foreign Minister Qualson-Sackey has thrown in with the new regime,” parts of the first document read.

It is in the second document that insinuations were given about Quaison-Sackey being a CIA agent.

“Maybe we’re being too hasty. Maybe Alex Quaison-Sackey, the right-hand man of the late and unlamented left-wing regime of Kwame Nkrumah, was really a secret CIA agent who worked his way up to be president of the United Nations General Assembly and foreign minister of Ghana and then, at a prearranged signal, hustled Nkrumah off to Peking and engineered the coup which overthrew him,” parts of the document read.

It also showed some of the actions the late minister took after the coup, including failing to adhere to Nkrumah’s order to go and defend him at the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), now African Union (AU).

“But lacking any such evidence, we find Mr Quaison-Sackey’s behaviour most remarkable. When Nkrumah rushed from Peking to Moscow and thence to Guinea to try to salvage what he could of his dignity, he ordered his foreign minister to man the defences at the Organisation of African States in Addis Ababa. Instead, Mr Quaison-Sackey hied himself to London and then back home to Ghana, where he extolled the new regime as a breath of freedom and warned that sneaky old Nkrumah would try to worm his way back into power with Russian and Chinese help.”

The document also showed details of some of the supposed actions Dr Quaison-Sackey took as the head of the United Nations General Assembly, suggesting that he might have been pretending to support Dr Kwame Nkrumah.

“Well. In fact, well, well. Has it taken Mr Quaison-Sackey this long to see the light? Or has he seen it all along and simply preferred to keep his job and his gold robes and his beaded cane [which the affable gentleman said represented authority] by advancing the cause of a regime which he secretly despised? As president of the General Assembly, Mr Quaison-Sackey protected the Soviet Union from censure for its delinquency in assessments; he pleaded the cause of communist China; he blamed the United States for the atrocities at Stanleyville; he urged an invasion of Rhodesia; and in general, he served as spokesman and defender of a regime where freedom was nothing but a word on postage stamps,” part of the document reads.

Global rating agencies biased against African countries

0

Former president Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo Former president Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo

Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has renewed his call for the establishment of an African-led credit rating agency.

According to him, existing global rating systems are biased against the continent and hinder fair access to development financing.

Speaking at the 32nd Annual Meetings of Afreximbank in Abuja, Nigeria, Akufo-Addo praised the bank for supporting Ghana during its 2022 financial crisis when international markets were inaccessible.

“At a time when Ghana couldn’t access international capital, Afreximbank stepped in with $750 million. When others looked away, Professor Oramah and his team stood with us. Ghanaians, and I as former President, remain grateful,” he said.

However, Akufo-Addo criticised international rating agencies for applying double standards that unfairly penalise African nations.

“Countries in similar situations outside Africa receive better ratings simply because they aren’t African. We are charged higher risk premiums based on skewed assessments,” he said.

His comments come in the wake of Fitch’s recent downgrade of Afreximbank’s rating, partly due to Ghana and Zambia indicating they may include the bank’s debt in their restructuring plans.

Ghana, however, maintains that Afreximbank does not qualify as a multilateral lender under IMF rules and should be treated as a commercial creditor.

Akufo-Addo urged African countries to reclaim control over their financing tools by supporting homegrown institutions like Afreximbank and the African Development Bank.

“We cannot develop our continent if the levers of finance remain outside our control,” he said.

He also reiterated his proposal to the African Union, urging member states to allocate 30% of their sovereign reserves to African financial institutions.

“These funds are sitting in foreign accounts earning little, while we struggle to fund infrastructure,” he added.

Afreximbank has invested over $2 billion in Ghana over the years, supporting cocoa financing, forex swaps, and power sector relief, including a 2014 bailout for the Volta River Authority during the energy crisis.

With Ghana still navigating debt restructuring, its continued engagement with Afreximbank remains crucial.

Why Kwame Nkrumah’s mother-in-law refused to bless her daughter’s marriage

Fathia’s mother, Mrs. Rizk

You might know that Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah married an Egyptian woman.
But you may not know the sad yet enduring story of loss, determination, and resistance that led to their marriage.

Kwame Nkrumah “met” Fathia Halim Rizk through a carefully arranged match, orchestrated as part of his vision for Pan-African unity.

According to answersafrica.com, Nkrumah sent his friend, Alhaji Saleh Said Sinare, who had studied in Egypt, to find a suitable Egyptian Christian bride.

Fathia was selected from a shortlist of women, and it was during this process that Nkrumah chose her, even though they had never met in person.

However, there was resistance. Fathia’s mother, Mrs. Rizk, an Egyptian Coptic Christian, refused to bless the union between her daughter and Nkrumah.

According to her grandson Gamal, Fathia’s brother had already married an English woman and moved abroad.

Already mourning one child’s departure, Mrs. Rizk was reluctant to lose another to marriage in a distant country.

“My grandmother’s firstborn had left Egypt with his English bride, and when my father proposed, she was reluctant to see another of her children marry a foreigner and leave the country,” Gamal was quoted as saying by Nigerian historian Adeyinka Makinde.

Despite Fathia’s explanation that Nkrumah was an anti-colonial hero akin to Egypt’s Nasser, her mother remained unmoved.

“Still, my grandmother did not relent; she refused to speak to my mother or bless the marriage,” he added.

Undeterred, Fathia left Egypt with her uncle, journeying through Khartoum, Kano, and Lagos, eventually arriving in Ghana, fully determined to marry Nkrumah despite her mother’s silence.

Fathia arrived in Accra on New Year’s Eve, December 31, 1957, and Nkrumah married her that very evening.

Despite the initial family rift, Fathia embraced her new country, quickly mastering English and stepping confidently into her role as First Lady.

She eventually earned the admiration of many Ghanaian women, especially the influential market women, who even named a kente design after her: Fathia fata Nkrumah, meaning “Fathia deserves Nkrumah.”

Though their marriage was born out of political symbolism, Fathia and Nkrumah built a life together, had several children, endured exile after Nkrumah’s 1966 overthrow, and maintained a strong bond until his death in 1972.

Fathia later returned to Ghana, where she passed away in 2007.

Four teams have secured early qualification to the quarterfinal stage of the 2025 Bankers League Gala following a competitive opening round of group matches at the Legon Stadium on Saturday, June 28.

Zenith Bank delivered a dominant display in Group A, sealing back-to-back victories against National Investment Bank (NIB) and Ecobank to secure their place in the last eight with a game in hand. Their clinical performance left little doubt about their intent to challenge for this year’s title.

In Group B, Stanbic Bank and Universal Merchant Bank (UMB) confirmed their progression after both sides recorded opening-day wins, ensuring safe passage into the knockout rounds ahead of the final group matches.

CalBank were equally impressive in Group C, dispatching ABSA and GT Bank with confident performances to top the group outright and book their quarterfinal ticket.

Group D remains the only undecided group. Consolidated Bank Ghana (CBG) and Republic Bank are currently joint leaders with four points each, having recorded a win and a draw. Standard Chartered Bank and Omnibsic, on one point apiece, still have a mathematical chance to qualify depending on the results in the final round of group matches.

The remaining group fixtures are scheduled for Saturday, July 5, at the same venue, with the quarterfinals to follow shortly after. The one-day Gala serves as a curtain-raiser to the 2025 Bankers Football League, which is set to kick off on July 12. League fixtures will be played at the McDan Astroturf and St Thomas Aquinas Senior High School pitch.

Despite their early elimination, NIB striker Kweku Ghansah remained upbeat. Speaking after his side’s loss, he acknowledged their lack of preparation but set sights firmly on the league campaign.

“Well, the game didn’t go well, but we are hoping to win our next game. Actually, we didn’t really prepare, but we’ll come back stronger,” he said. “Our main target is the league. You know, we’ve won the league three times consecutively. I’ve taken the Goal King twice. When I say we’ll come back stronger, we know what we are talking about.”

Reflecting on the tournament’s broader purpose, Ghansah praised the level of football on display and the camaraderie it fosters. “It’s a fun game, but you can see some talent in there. It’s just for exercise, networking, and fun. That’s what we’re out for.”

As part of efforts to safeguard Ghana’s financial system, the Bank of Ghana (BoG) has issued a stern warning to Ghanaians and financial service providers to steer clear of specific Money Transfer Organisations (MTOs) operating without the required regulatory approval from the Apex bank.

  • The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has warned against engaging with unlicensed Money Transfer Organizations (MTOs).
  • Ten firms were identified for allegedly violating Ghanaian financial laws by operating without necessary approvals.
  • Financial providers are instructed to avoid collaboration with these entities or face significant penalties.

In a statement released on its website on June 27, and cited by The High Street Journal, the Bank identified ten unlicensed money transfer firms allegedly conducting foreign exchange and remittance activities in violation of Ghanaian financial laws

The BoG emphasized that these entities are neither licensed nor authorised to operate within the country’s financial ecosystem.

“A person shall not engage in the business of dealing in foreign exchange without a licence issued under this Act,” the Bank quoted from Section 3.1 of the Act.

It further emphasized that all foreign exchange transfers to or from Ghana must be done through licensed operators, stressing that unapproved MTOs not only break the law but also undermine public trust and also expose users to the risk of fraud, data misuse, or loss of funds.

To help the public make informed decisions, the BoG has provided a complete list of authorized money transfer providers on its official website.

The unlicensed organizations named are:

  1. ACE Money Transfer
  2. Remit Union
  3. Remit Home
  4. Roze Remit
  5. Monty Global
  6. Nairagram
  7. i-Transfer
  8. Hurupay
  9. Eversend
  10. Izi Send

The Bank of Ghana’s directive was particularly accorded to local banks, Dedicated Electronic Money Issuers (DEMIs), and Enhanced Payment Service Providers (EPSPs), instructing them to avoid all forms of engagement with these blacklisted entities.

Licensed MTOs were also reminded to channel all forex flows through approved partners and adhere to operational standards or face penalties.

“Non-compliance will result in severe sanctions, including the withdrawal of the licence of the institution in breach,” the Bank warned.

To help the public make informed decisions, the BoG has provided a complete list of authorised money transfer providers on its official website. The central bank further urged Ghanaians to verify the licensing status of any MTO before initiating transactions.

According to the BoG, these regulatory provisions are in place to maintain the integrity, transparency, and security of the country’s financial system.

This announcement forms part of the BoG’s ongoing efforts to sanitise Ghana’s remittance and forex market, particularly as digital payments and cross-border money transfers gain popularity.

“Respect those who serve you for long” – Ex-Asante Kotoko star worried over unfair treatment towards captains

0

Some former players, fans and commentators have criticized Asante Kotoko’s management for what they perceive as a lack of respect or fair treatment towards captains, suggesting the club’s decision-making process could be improved.

Former Asante Kotoko midfielder, Emmanuel Gyamfi has admonished his former employees to give their long-term servers and captains proper treatment and respect.

According to the former warrior, who also served as a captain of the club, there have been instances where captains were falsely accused and dropped from the team with poor treatment.

Gyamfi speaking in an interview with Ghana Sports Page expressed frustration with how the club has handled these situations, disclosing that the captains are not given the respect, proper treatment or support they deserved from the club.

His reaction follows the club’s decision to part ways with Justice Blay after the 2024/25 season and previous captaincy issues with Felix Annan, Abdul Ganiu Ismael and Danlad Ibrahim.

“I am very surprised with what is going on. For my own, I didn’t deserve it but I was falsely accused. For God being good to me, everyone witnessed what happened. Sometimes, some of us just seek for favors that doesn’t belong to them by using all means and false claims.

“You will be surprised when you listen to my story but I never wanted to speak out or do any press conferences just because I have Kotoko at heart. Although it wasn’t about the team but I wanted to expose the one who was leading us at that time for people to know the truth so that he can leave. But the truth came out later and I was declared clean.

“For someone like Felix Annan, I think they just wanted to drag him out of the team because they don’t like the players who mostly stay for long in the team and they will start accusing you.

“I remember the love that I have for Kotoko in my peak when we got to the money zone in Africa. I had offers from Al Hilal of Sudan and Zesco United but the coach himself had to plead on the management side that he will leave if they decide to let me go and I was convinced to stay because the love I have for Kotoko.

“I tried to stay but I was later tagged with a lot of names but I am a footballer and I tried moving on. I have a strong heart and I also have God in me. For such things, I would advice the leaders to have patience and respect those who serve the club for long and try to offer the person whatever he wants because he can become a legend who can return to work as a coach, management member or whatever.

“I always feel surprised but it has already happened and I will advice the boys to accept whatever the club will tell them and move on,” said Gyamfi.

‘My elder sister died because of Adom Kyei Duah’s ‘sobolo’ – Diana Asamoah alleges

Ghanaian gospel musician Diana Asamoah has alleged that her elder sister died after consuming one of Prophet Adom Kyei Duah’s miracle drinks, commonly referred to as “Sobolo.”

In a live video, Diana Asamoah explained that her sister had been battling diabetes for 17 years and was on prescribed medication to manage the condition.

However, her condition worsened when she stopped taking her medication and instead began drinking the miracle “Sobolo.”

She claimed her sister believed in the healing powers of the “Sobolo” and refused to take her prescribed medicine, even discarding drugs sent to her by her husband abroad.

According to Diana, the consumption of the Sobolo contributed to her sister’s death.

“The Bible states that everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved; it does not say that anyone who calls on ‘Sobolo’ will be saved. As I mentioned earlier, my elder sister passed away on December 6. She had diabetes for 17 years but only deteriorated after she began consuming ‘Sobolo.’

“Her husband was abroad, and whenever he sent her medicine, she would discard it and opt for ‘Sobolo’ instead. That led to her death,” Diana Asamoah alleged.

Addressing her public criticism of Prophet Adom Kyei Duah, Diana Asamoah clarified that her comments are not motivated by hatred or rivalry.

She stated that she has no interest in establishing her own church and is not jealous of his large following.

Her concern, she said, is about the misleading teachings and practices she believes the prophet is promoting.

“I do not harbour hatred against anyone, nor have I established a church out of jealousy for the number of members you have in yours. I believe establishing a church is a noble endeavour. If the Lord has called you to establish a church, then preach the Word of God to His children,” she said.

Diana also addressed the prophet’s claim that women should not preach, opposing the statement.

She cited women in the Bible who played significant roles in spreading the gospel and encouraged other women of faith not to be discouraged by such teachings.

“Do not deceive people by claiming that women should not preach. Women proclaim the gospel, and if you are a woman who believes in the Word of God, go out there and share the gospel. We have women in the Bible like Elizabeth, Dorcas, and Priscilla who were used by the Lord. So what are you talking about? I have mentioned that you are not a preacher of the Word of God, and you have admitted this yourself, so just continue with your business,” she stated.

How Nsumankwaafoɔ ‘stopped’ the rain at grand durbar, Asantehene held to honour King Mswati III

0

A miracle reportedly happened during the grand durbar the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, held to honour the ruler of Eswatini, King Mswati III, on Thursday, June 26, 2025.

According to a report by graphic.com.gh, the Nsumankwaafoɔ of Asanteman stopped the rains from pouring at the Dwabrem at Manhyia Palace, where the durbar was held, which could have disrupted the celebration.

The report indicated that it rained heavily in surrounding areas, but there was no rain at the Manhyia Palace, leading to the belief that the Nsumankwaafie successfully prevented the rain from falling on the durbar grounds.

This allowed the durbar, which was graced by the Asantehene himself as well as all chiefs and queen mothers of Asanteman, to proceed smoothly.

It added that the Asante Nsumankwaafie, who are commonly referred to as ‘adurofuo’ (spiritual oracles), possess the extraordinary powers to stop rain from falling during important outdoor events attended by the Asantehene.

The people of the Asante Nsumankwaafie are led by the Nsumankwaahene, Baffour Asabre Kogyawoasu Ababio III.

Why I chose to invest $4 million in a school over building a house – Popular businessman explains

Dr Charles Yeboah is the Managing Director of the International Community School play videoDr Charles Yeboah is the Managing Director of the International Community School

Co-Founder and Managing Director of the International Community School (ICS), Dr Charles Yeboah, has revealed that he invested a whopping $4 million in establishing a school at a time when he had not even built his own house.

According to him, even when the school began to generate revenue and turn a profit, he and his wife did not purchase a vehicle or build a house, as they focused on reinvesting to grow the business.

Dr Yeboah stated that, at one point, some people around him began to question his motive for not building a house but rather focusing on the school; however, he was unbothered.

“We invested over $4 million in the school before we ever built our house. We lived in four different homes in 10 years, and people would come to the campus and say, ‘Hey, you’ve sunk so much money here, and you don’t have a house.’

“I said, that can wait, because we were not prepared and ready to just show off this beautiful house that we had created out of whatever capital we were using for the business. We could wait,” he said while speaking on the Konnect Minds podcast.

The business mogul explained that the rationale behind his decision was to establish himself financially and avoid complacency at that stage in his life.

He noted that the decision paid off, as it helped him become the prominent figure he is today, having eventually acquired most of those things.

“Showing success could wait. Even though the school borrowed and raised quite a bit of capital, we didn’t even buy ourselves a brand-new car. We could have done that, but we didn’t want to be comfortable too early,” Dr Yeboah said.

I invested in my children instead of building houses —Oga Bello

0

With over six decades in the film industry, veteran filmmaker Adebayo Salami, popularly known as ‘Oga Bello,’ remains one of the most respected and enduring figures among his peers. A proud father of 18 children, Salami began his acting journey in 1964 with the Young Concert Party, a theatre group led by the legendary Ojo Ladipo, also known as Baba Mero. In this exclusive interview with Rotimi Ige, he opens up about his latest cinema project, Her Excellency, reflects on his remarkable 60-year journey in Nollywood, and shares how his dedication to his children has yielded lasting rewards.

YOU have most of your children in the industry and they are all representing well; how proud are you as a father and what gave you the foresight to see the importance of education before craft?

Let me just say, it’s God’s design. I never thought of letting any of my children take after me. The education you are talking about, I am very passionate about education. Unfortunately, I didn’t get the support from my parents because of their level but I had it in mind that all my children must be educated even if it’s attainment of at least to get the first degree. By the time I met myself as a polygamist, I’ve had it in mind that I don’t want to leave any properties for my children. I need just two houses; one in Lagos and one in my hometown. If you meet any money in my account, share it. I’m passionate about education.

How were you able to bring them to the industry?

I didn’t bring or force them to the industry, they grew their passion towards it on their own terms, when I discovered that Femi and some of his younger siblings showed interest in the film industry, I did not scold rather supported them. For instance, whenever I’m going for rehearsals and they want to follow me and I will say no, except you have good result. That made them work hard to get good results in school and here we are. I’m very happy and overwhelmed. If I knew he (Femi) will be a filmmaker, I will not spend much money on school, I would ask him to go and read Filmmaking or Theatre Arts.

60 years in the creative space, what has kept you stronger?

Honestly, grace has brought me this far and I thank Almighty Allah for the gift of life and good family around.

How have you been able to stay relevant in the industry for so long?

It’s something I’ve always been doing is moving with time. I don’t have to be stagnant. We started on stage and from there we moved down to video and television. I followed all those steps and I made sure I do it. From there to magazine. I did travel theatre from one place to another; Kano, Warri, Kaduna, Sokoto. I move with time. When it comes to cinema, we were doing it simultaneously with theatre but the problem is that people accepted cinema than stage performances. So, we stick to cinema. Anything I want to do I learn it well, I travelled down to London to do some seminars, workshops on film production from there I went to France for some production seminars where I was able to get some francophone production books to read and learn from.

However, I learnt all practical aspect of movie from the late Adeyemi Afolayan (Ade love); my life journey in the industry has been smooth because I moved with time, you cannot compare the olden days movie making with the present day. I’m learning because you have to learn and let it sink in.

Has your age limited the kind of roles you take on knowing that you have played virtually every role?

As an actor, the question of age should not limit the kind of roles I should play. Acting is perpetually an imitation of life’s reality. For me, I don’t take roles anyhow. Even if you cast me for a role and I know I can’t fit in I will tell you no. I will rather advise.

Has there been any scar that has affected you till now?

The death of my boss, Ojo Olanrewaju, the death of his wife, his wife died seven years after and she had a lot of problems with the family. When my Oga died he left a strong word for me saying you must continue this profession because I was present when he died. I didn’t feel too comfortable to go on with it because I didn’t think it will be my source of income. When I resigned from where I was working with Ahaji Femi Okunnu as his personal assistant. We left federal ministry of works together, he said I should follow him to his chamber because he was a lawyer then. I named Femi after him. It was very difficult to start but there’s nothing I can do. When his wife died seven years after I felt I’m no more interested in this profession anymore. Late Dr. ogunbode called me and said why don’t I want to do it. He said I have future in the profession that he will pray for me. He said as hard as my tests that how I will be lifted. Which means success comes with so many obstacles.

What was your biggest hit?

The title of the stage play that brought me into limelight is Omo Gbemiga, that was the stage play we staged during my 50th anniversary. However, ‘Omo oru Kan’ in 1987 gave him my fame.

Ahead of your 60 years on stage celebration, what should we expect?

When I did my 50 years on stage, we celebrated with stage performance and musical performances from veterans. I felt what should be obtainable now and I said cinema movie. That’s what comes to anybody head if you are a filmmaker. So, for the celebration, I did a remake of one my old titles ‘Agbara Obinrin’ to ‘Her Excellency’. It’s a beautiful set up directed by Tope Adebayo and Tope Tijani and I served as the supervising director on stage.  Her Excellency parades beautiful cast that includes Sola Sobowale, Bimbo Ademoye, Femi Adebayo, Yemi Solade, Fathia Balogun, Aishat Lawal amongst others.

Why is the project ‘Her Excellency’ dear to you?

It’s dear to me because whenever I’m putting up my script, I do a lot of research and if you are a lover of my craft, you will know I do more of family-oriented stories but this particular project is pitched higher to the status of the governor. I’m trying to let people know that I don’t produce a movie that doesn’t pass message. The message there is that however you are, the wife must support her husband no matter what. Women support husband in two ways; either support or destroy his life. You have to be careful to know how you do with your husband and wife.

As a veteran, what will you like to be remembered for?

I want to be remembered for all the messages I’ve passed through my movies.

You have witnessed the old and new times in the industry, what is your assessment of the industry now?

The industry is growing fast. It depends on how you move with it. Culture is dynamic and you have to move with time. Putting Agbada to the office is old. We have more talents in terms of technical and crew. We have more actors that can interpret your roles properly. There have been a lot of positive changes, in terms of making money out of it.

Healthwise, we have seen a lot of veteran’s breakdowns, what advice do you have for younger colleagues to be more conscious of their health status?

Old age comes with so many challenges. That is certain. Preparing for old age is a personal thing. In this side of the world, they are so bad with it in every profession. Most of us don’t prepare ahead. I am just lucky as a person, I haven’t planned my retirement as well. I invested in my children instead of building houses and in old age, they will take care of me.
