Ghana’s Minister of Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, has concluded a series of engagements in China aimed at advancing the country’s ongoing debt restructuring efforts.

In a post on his social media handle, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson disclosed that the mission included meetings with China’s Ministry of Finance, China Exim Bank, and key financial and contractor creditors.

He noted that the discussions were constructive and represent significant progress toward finalising the debt restructuring process.

The finance minister described the engagements as a critical step in the government’s broader efforts to stabilise the economy, address the country’s debt challenges, and protect the well-being of citizens.

“We are steadily closing this difficult chapter in our economic history, and doing so with a solemn pledge; never again shall our people be subjected to such hardship,” he added.

He indicated that the progress made in China strengthens Ghana’s position as it works to conclude this difficult chapter in the country’s economic history and move toward a more resilient, inclusive, and stable future.

“This mission was not just about numbers and negotiations, it was about safeguarding the future of our economy and the well-being of every Ghanaian,” he stated.

“The progress we’ve made gives me great confidence that we are on the brink of a new era of stability, resilience, and inclusive growth. Ghana will rise stronger from this episode in our history, and together, we will build an economy that delivers for every citizen,” he concluded.

Former Black Stars striker Asamoah Gyan, famously known as “Baby Jet,” is once again commanding attention, but this time, it’s not on the football pitch.

In a TikTok video making waves online, Gyan is seen inspecting his poultry farm while dressed in stunning royal attire.

Clad in a richly embroidered traditional robe and a matching crown-like headpiece, he moves calmly through rows of healthy hens, pausing to check the birds.

This latest venture comes shortly after Gyan shared a powerful message on X, describing himself as “Nana Asamoah” and hinting at a new chapter where his true influence would be felt.

Many see this poultry farm as a sign that Gyan’s promise of “real power” is taking shape, feeding people, creating jobs, and showing that his ambitions reach far beyond football.

Asamoah Gyan’s journey to this point is nothing short of remarkable.

He rose from playing for Liberty Professionals to becoming Ghana’s all-time leading goal scorer.

He made his debut for the Black Stars at just 17, scored Ghana’s first-ever World Cup goal in 2006, and became the highest-scoring African player in World Cup history with six goals across three tournaments.

His club career took him from Italy’s Udinese to France’s Rennes, then to Sunderland in the English Premier League, where he won hearts with his big goals and charismatic celebrations.

Later, he played in the UAE, China, Turkey, and India, before hanging up his boots in June 2023.

Inviting suspects politely dignifies corruption – Sukparu defends EOCO’s firm action

0

Member of Parliament for Sissala West, Mohammed Adams Sukparu, has argued that extending courteous invitations to corruption suspects risks dignifying their alleged wrongdoing, insisting that firm, swift action by state agencies like EOCO is the right approach.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Tuesday, July 1, he waded into ongoing public commentary following the arrest of the former Managing Director of GIHOC Distilleries, Maxwell Kofi Jumah, stressing that justice should not be compromised under the guise of protocol or politics.

“If you sit and invite them to come at their own time with their lawyers, then it will look like we are trying to dignify the act of corruption,” he stated.

Mr. Sukparu rejected claims that the arrest of Mr. Jumah was politically motivated, insisting that it was not a “political prosecution,” but rather an important step to hold public officers accountable, regardless of their political affiliation.

“I do not see it as the government going after its opponent. I believed if any of President Mahama’s appointees is engaged in any act that is suspected to be corruption, certainly the same way that investigations are being conducted, the same thing will be applied to an NDC appointee.”

According to him, President John Dramani Mahama’s administration will equally support similar probes if any of his appointees are suspected of corruption, noting that individuals who engage in such acts are “enemies to our progress.”

His comments come in the wake of the arrest of Maxwell Kofi Jumah, who was taken into custody following an official complaint by GIHOC Distilleries. The complaint alleged that Mr. Jumah had unlawfully taken vehicles belonging to the company.

Mr. Jumah was arrested and later granted GHS500,000 bail with two sureties after appearing at the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) headquarters on Monday, June 30.

The Ghana Police Service, during a press briefing led by DCOP Lydia Yaako Donkor, confirmed that three of the vehicles in question had since been retrieved.

University of Ghana hall week caused COVID-19 resurgence – Health Minister

0

The recent surge in COVID-19 cases within the University of Ghana community has been directly attributed to the institution’s recent hall week celebrations, Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh informed Parliament today, July 1, 2025.

The minister emphasised that these festive gatherings served as the primary catalyst for the localised outbreak.

Addressing the House, Mr Akandoh provided an update on the situation, assuring Ghanaians that while COVID-19 is no longer a global health emergency, it continues to flare up occasionally, particularly during certain seasons.

He confirmed that Ghana’s national disease surveillance system promptly detected the increase in cases at the University of Ghana, identifying the variant as the familiar Omicron sub-variant, which is known for its high transmissibility but typically causes mild illness.

As of today, July 1, the minister reported 316 suspected cases within the University of Ghana community, with 107 of these confirmed as COVID-19.

Crucially, he noted that there have been no hospitalisations and no deaths associated with this specific outbreak, with all confirmed cases currently recovering well.

“The recent COVID-19 cases are localised at the University of Ghana community only,” Mr Akandoh stressed, highlighting the effectiveness of Ghana’s robust influenza surveillance system, which detected the cases and was confirmed by the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research.

He lauded Ghana’s foresight in maintaining COVID-19 monitoring, even as many countries have scaled down testing.

Pinpointing the cause of the spike, Mr Akandoh stated unequivocally, “The most significant factor was the recent Hall Week celebrations held at the University. These events brought large crowds together, with little use of face masks or distancing.”

He added that a general drop in adherence to basic COVID-19 safety protocols and some challenges with contact tracing also contributed to the spread.

Upon receiving the initial alerts, the government promptly dispatched a national team to collaborate with the university and municipal health authorities.

Key officials from the Ghana Health Service, Noguchi, and the School of Public Health convened meetings, and alerts were issued nationwide to all health facilities.

The University of Ghana has since suspended all remaining hall week activities and launched a campus-wide education campaign utilising various channels.

Looking ahead, the ministry is bolstering support for Legon Hospital and the Student Clinic with additional resources and preparing the Ghana Infectious Disease Centre for any potential severe cases.

Efforts are also underway to provide more Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs), train frontline health workers, enhance data tracking, and continue daily testing and monitoring.

Mr Akandoh reiterated his assurance to the public, stating, “This is not a new virus, and we are not back to 2020. This Omicron variant has been with us before. It spreads fast, yes – but it is mostly mild. And we know how to manage it.”

He urged calm, cooperation, and adherence to public health practices.

While COVID-19 vaccination is no longer part of routine immunisation, the ministry has initiated processes to secure vaccines for vulnerable populations, emphasising their role in preventing severe disease and deaths.

Treatment options, including Paxlovid for eligible patients, are available, and most mild cases can recover at home.

The minister also briefly touched on the rise in seasonal flu cases and ongoing reports of cholera, urging the public to maintain good hygiene practices.

He further updated Parliament on the MPOX situation, with 133 confirmed cases mostly in Western, Greater Accra, and Western North Regions, noting no admissions or deaths to date, and most affected individuals having fully recovered.

In conclusion, Mr Akandoh urged collective responsibility. The Ministry remains committed to protecting the health of all Ghanaians, even as vigilance is paramount.

Look to the past to build the future – Cardinal Turkson to Ghanaians

0

His Eminence Cardinal Peter Kodwo Appiah Turkson, a globally respected figure in Catholic leadership and peacebuilding, has urged Ghanaians to look to their history as a guide toward unity, justice, and sustainable development.

Delivering the sermon at the National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving held on Tuesday, July 1, Cardinal Turkson reflected on Ghana’s current national challenges, stressing that the country is once again at a pivotal crossroads.

“Crossroad examples are always with us. We live, and we face them all the time,” he said.

He encouraged Ghanaians to take inspiration from the biblical people of Israel by reflecting on their own national past to discern the right path forward.

“But let us, like the people of Israel, find solutions to how we discern the real path in crossroad experiences from going into our past. For it is our past that indicates to us how well we lived and how happy we were,” he said.

Citing landmark moments in Ghana’s post-independence development, Cardinal Turkson referenced national ideals like “Freedom and Justice,” and highlighted institutions such as the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), which symbolised Ghana’s early commitment to technological and human advancement.

“There have been experiences in the past that animate and spur us, but there have also been experiences in the past that we do not want to revisit,” he noted.

“But when we revisit our past, it is to enable us to reset the well-being for all—what we call the common good.”

He called on both leadership and citizens to recommit to inclusive development and ensure that every Ghanaian is carried along in the journey toward national progress.

Aggrey Memorial SHS headmistress displays seized condoms, pills at PTA

By Prince Acquah

Cape Coast, July 01, GNA – Parents were stunned when Mrs. Dorothy Adentwi-Hayford Aggrey Memorial SHS headmistress displayed seized condoms, pills, and unauthorized items from students during a spirited address at the school’s PTA meeting in Cape Coast.

In a firm stance against growing indiscipline in the school, Mrs. Adentwi-Hayford placed the confiscated items on the high table as a visual illustration of the moral and disciplinary challenges some students posed.

Though she declined to name the culprits, she assured parents that appropriate disciplinary actions—alongside counselling—would be taken.

She clarified that while the majority of students were disciplined, a persistent few continued to exhibit deviant behaviours that undermined the school’s standards.

“These include sneaking out without exeat, bullying, stealing, truancy, and general apathy towards academic work,” she said.

More troubling, according to her, was the conduct of some parents who condoned such behaviours. She condemned instances where parents verbally attacked or placed curses on school authorities for disciplining their wards without verifying the facts.

Determined to restore order, Mrs. Adentwi-Hayford announced stricter disciplinary measures, warning that any form of misconduct would not be tolerated as the school strives to move from a category B to a category A institution.

She urged parents to take an active interest in their children’s welfare beyond just providing for their material needs.

“When your children return home with complaints, please investigate. Contact the school before jumping to conclusions,” she advised.

She also called on parents to respect the school’s security protocols, which are designed to protect the students.

Several parents who contributed during the open forum supported the headmistress’ call for tougher discipline, commending her efforts to maintain high standards.

Ghana and China trade blame as tensions rise over surging galamsey activities

0

Ghana, Africa’s leading gold producer, has become a hotspot for illicit mining activities, with many of the operations allegedly involving Chinese nationals.

While some Ghanaians accuse Chinese actors of fuelling the crisis, China’s ambassador to Ghana, Tong Defa, has rejected the notion that the problem stems solely from Chinese nationals.

“The issue did not originate from the Chinese,” Ambassador Tong stated in an interview with local media. “Some of those who are even caught red-handed are simply migrant workers trying to make a living.”

He added that Chinese nationals were unable to obtain mining licences in Ghana and were typically brought in by Ghanaians who facilitated the illegal operations.

“The perception is unfair to me, personally, and to the majority of Chinese nationals here,” Tong added. “When I post on social media, comments often suggest that galamsey is entirely caused by China, which is a significant injustice.”

His comments follow several arrests, including Chinese nationals, during government crackdowns on illegal miners.

Illegal gold mining has wreaked havoc across Ghana’s Western, Ashanti and Eastern regions. Environmentalists warn that the use of toxic chemicals has polluted major rivers and degraded fertile land through rampant deforestation and soil erosion.

One of the most prominent examples of Chinese involvement is Aisha Huang, dubbed the “Galamsey Queen.” She was sentenced in 2023 to 4½ years in prison and fined US$4,000 after returning to Ghana despite a previous deportation.

Ambassador Tong defended China’s presence in Ghana, highlighting its investments in infrastructure.

“Chinese companies have built numerous buildings, roads and ports,” he said. “Yet, do ordinary Ghanaians truly recognise these efforts, or do they consistently associate us solely with galamsey?”

The Administrator of Ghana’s Minerals Development Fund (MDF), Hanna Louisa Bissiw, responded with a firm stance, promising zero tolerance.

“Let me be unequivocally clear: there will be no compromise on what we have to do. It’s an absolute ‘never’,” Bissiw declared. She also noted that during a recent visit to China, officials there expressed support for Ghana’s anti-galamsey efforts.

Former UN senior governance adviser Baffour Agyeman-Duah said the situation suggests complicity at immigration points.

“Most of the Chinese involved appear to be rural and not highly educated,” he said. “This implies a deliberate system is in place to recruit and move them through Ghana’s borders into mining areas.”

University of Ghana professor Gladys Nyarko Ansah criticised the ambassador’s rationale.

“Is the ambassador saying that because some Ghanaians engage in stealing, Chinese migrants in Ghana should also engage in stealing?” she asked.

Security analyst Ndubuisi Christian Ani, from the Institute for Security Studies, said Ghana must balance its respect for China with accountability.

“Ghana tends to be lenient on arrested Chinese persons involved in illegal mining, partly because of its high regard for China,” he noted. “But criminal activities must be treated as such to avoid impunity.”

As diplomatic tensions flare, the galamsey crisis underscores deeper questions of complicity, enforcement, and geopolitical ties. While both Ghanaian and Chinese actors have roles in the problem, what remains critical is whether both governments will collaborate sincerely to root out illegal mining, or continue pointing fingers as Ghana’s land and water resources continue to suffer.

African artistes need to stop being obsessed with money

Motolani Alake is a Nigerian music executive Motolani Alake is a Nigerian music executive

Nigerian music executive Motolani Alake has urged African artistes, particularly those from West Africa, to reassess how they value their music and approach business negotiations in the industry.

In an interview on Hitz FM on July 1, 2025, Alake expressed concern over what he described as an unrealistic obsession with money that many African musicians have, especially when negotiating deals involving their music catalogues.

According to him, many artistes walk into meetings asking for millions of dollars for catalogues that barely generate any revenue.

“African artistes, especially West African artists, need to stop being obsessed with money that makes no sense. Your entire catalogue cannot be making $1,000 or $5,000, and you’re asking for a million dollars,” he said.

Motolani went on to say that the essence of any business deal is for it to be mutually beneficial. He noted that some artistes appear to misunderstand the value of their work and walk into negotiations with inflated expectations, which can ruin genuine business opportunities.

“The entire concept of a deal that makes sense is that it makes sense for everybody,” he stated.

He advised artistes to conduct market research before heading into negotiations. He explained that even top-level musicians with decades of experience still take the time to study trends and data before putting out new work or entering deals.

“I think people need to do market research. I know a big artist, a legendary artist in Nigeria right now that is about to release an album, and what he’s currently doing is market research. If an OG like that is doing market research. What goes into that is understanding the sound, understanding the palettes, studying data, studying the change in attitude, studying social media, studying marketing tactics. Understanding what operates, talking to his friends that have done certain types of deals,” Alake explained.

He noted that artistes should walk into meetings knowing the true value of their work and be realistic about what they ask for, rather than chasing figures that aren’t backed by data.

“If you’re going to walk into a room, you need to know exactly what you’re walking into. I think a lot of people don’t do that. They just open their mouth and ask for a million. The way African artists ask for a million dollars is just insane. Everybody wants a million dollars,” he added.

‘Even office of the President I hold is not above the law’

0

President John Dramani Mahama President John Dramani Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has urged Ghanaians to hold public officials accountable, noting that true leadership should not be seen as a means for personal enrichment, but rather a sacred responsibility to serve, protect, and uplift the most vulnerable in society.

He was speaking at the maiden National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving on July 1, 2025.

“We must hold those in authority, including myself, accountable to the highest standards of integrity and humility. Public office is not a privilege for personal gain. It is a sacred trust bestowed by the people and a responsibility to serve all, especially the most vulnerable of us. Even the office of the President, which by the grace of God I now hold, is not above the law”, he noted.

President Mahama also emphasised the need for ethical governance and civic responsibility, stating that a morally grounded society is key to building a just, peaceful, and prosperous Ghana.

He stressed that it must also be rooted in honesty, respect, and reverence for God, the kind of leadership that prospers and leads the country toward enduring greatness.

“Leadership must be grounded in justice, in honesty, and in the reverence of God. If we want a just Ghana, we must be just in leadership,” he said.

President Mahama further posited that for the country to flourish in greatness, its citizens must embody good values, compassion for one another, and a spirit of sacrifice.

“A nation’s greatness is not measured by the heights of its skyscrapers or the size of its budgets, the values of its people are the true measure of a nation’s greatness.

“The virtues of courage, honesty, discipline, sacrifice, and compassion are what really measure the greatness of any nation. It is in these quiet strengths that the true power of our country Ghana resides. It is through these virtues that we will rise and prosper,” he added.

The National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving drew attendees from all walks of life and across the political divide, including religious leaders, traditional chiefs, government officials and some members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The popular phrase “Dzata is cooking!” has taken over X as Ghanaians express their views on what many see as a significant step towards more affordable data access.

The buzz follows an announcement made on June 10, 2025, by the Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, indicating that telecom companies would increase data allocations effective Tuesday July 1, 2025.

Tottenham reignite interest in Kudus amidst Champions League ambitions

Mohammed Kudus is a player of West Ham United Mohammed Kudus is a player of West Ham United

English Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur has reignited its interest in signing Ghanaian winger Mohammed Kudus from West Ham United.

According to renowned football expert Fabrizio Romano, who announced on X on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, Kudus is open to joining Tottenham as he desires to play in the Champions League next season.

The Ghanaian international joined West Ham from Ajax on August 27, 2023, in a five-year deal worth £38 million.

Kudus has been a revelation since his move, and the Hammers are now looking to make a significant profit from his potential sale.

While Kudus has an £85 million release clause that is active only for the first ten days of July, Tottenham is optimistic they can secure his services for a lower fee.

West Ham is reportedly open to cashing in on Kudus as they need funds for a squad rebuild during this summer’s transfer window, particularly to support new manager Graham Potter’s plans.

With West Ham’s mid-table position and need for squad investment, selling Kudus could outweigh the drawbacks of strengthening a rival, allowing the club to effectively reshape the team for a top-half push.

Chelsea and Newcastle are also reportedly among the clubs monitoring Kudus’s situation.

Parliament to debate 24-Hour Economy Policy document-Goosie Tanoh assures

0

By Godwill Arthur Mensah

Accra, July 01, GNA-Mr Augustus Obuadum Tanoh, Presidential Advisor for the 24-Hour Economy Secretariat, has given the assurance that the 24-Hour Economy Policy document will be presented to Parliament after its unveiling on July 2, for comprehensive debate by members of Parliament.

That, he believed, would enable legislators from both side of the aisle to make inputs into the policy to ensure its holistic and seamless implementation.

“We need to debate the content of the programme to justify the creation of an Authority. So, it is inevitable that it is going to happen,” Mr Tanoh stated.

This follows a proposal made by Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin recently that the 24-Hour Policy document needed to be debated on the floor of Parliament to get the buy-in of parliamentarians to ensure the ownership of the policy by all Ghanaians, irrespective of one’s political inclinations.

Mr Tanoh made this known during a media encounter in Accra June 30, to solicit media support to disseminate information about the policy to the citizens.

President John Dramani Mahama is expected to officially launch the 24-Hour Economy Policy document on Wednesday, July 2, 2025.

It is envisaged that the flagship programme would create not less than 1.7 million jobs in the next four years to propel industrial transformation.

Mr Tanoh also stated that the 24-Hour Economy Secretariat would also be converted into an Authority to enhance its scope of operations and that would require parliamentary approval.

“There has been approval to convert the current 24-Hour Secretariat into an Authority. And of course, it will get to be passed by a parliamentary majority,” he added.

In his interactions with the media, Mr Tanoh said government has envisaged to mobilise four billion US dollars in the next four years from development financial partners and institutions across the globe to ensure full-scale implementation of the programme.

The programme is designed to transform the economy and stimulate private sector participation to create jobs and ensure prosperity for all Ghanaians, he added.

The Government, he said, would provide an initial seed capital of $300 million to support businesses and individuals who would sign up onto the programme to ramp up production.

He said the programme had three key pillars including the Production Transformation, Supply Chain and Market Efficiency and Human Capital Development.

He said the three thematic pillars of the programme are supported by eight sub programmes including Grow 24, Make 24, Connect 24, Show Ghana, Go Ghana, Digital Technology, and Aspire 24.

Mr Tanoh indicated that government drew lessons from previous governments’ development initiatives including Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah’s seven-year development plan, Savannah Development Authority (SADA) and the National Development Planning Commission’s 40-year development plan.

Mr Abdul-Nasser Suglo Alidu, the Head of Strategy and Programme at the 24-Hour Economy Secretariat, in a presentation on the policy, highlighted the various sub programmes, noting that the programme was designed to transform production with agriculture as its main anchor to ensure food sufficiency.

It was also intended to develop the country’s value chain to achieve greater productivity and expand output in the industries to enhance food self-sufficiency and promote export-driven economy, Mr Abdul-Nasser explained.

For instance, he indicated that the ‘Make 24’ component was meant to boost manufacturing of goods and services, while the ‘Aspire 24’ was intended to change the mind-set of Ghanaian workers and minimise the bureaucratic bottlenecks in the public sector to aid in changing attitudes of the citizens for optimal productivity.

The ‘Show Ghana’ component for instance, was to showcase the rich diverse cultural identity of the Ghanaian people and connect with the diasporan community to promote tourism.

The ‘Go Ghana’ initiative was meant to mobilise the citizens to build a prosperous nation while the ‘Made-in-Ghana’ component meant to promote local manufacturing of goods and encourage Ghanaians to patronise domestically manufactured items.

Mr Abdul-Nasser stated that the programme would also roll-out the Volta Economic Corridor where there would be industrial parks, agro ecological parks and lake transportation on the Volta Lake to boost socio-economic development within the enclave.

Mr Abdul-Nasser said the programme has a national character and designed to utilise the human resource capacity and ingenuity of Ghanaians to accelerate socio-economic transformation and create jobs.

He cited Singapore, Malaysia, China and Denmark, which in the past implemented similar initiatives and believed that very soon Ghana would become a model of industrial transformation in West Africa and Africa at large.

President John Dramani Mahama has urged Ghanaians to reject tribalism, religious extremism, and political hostility, describing them as dangerous seeds of division that threaten the nation’s peace and unity.

Speaking at the inaugural National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving on July 1, 2025, he praised Ghana’s exceptional level of religious tolerance, saying it remains one of the country’s greatest assets in a world that is increasingly divided by faith and identity.

“Our different traditions and our backgrounds have not weakened us. They have strengthened us in our shared identity. This is a precious gift we must protect.

“Let us remain vigilant against the voices of tribalism, against the voices of religious extremism, and against the poison of political hostility. These are the seeds of division that we must never let take root in our precious nation, Ghana. We must speak a language of peace, compassion and mutual respect. We must build bridges, not barriers, for we are one people sharing one land and pursuing one identity and destiny,” he stated.

The President further commended the peaceful coexistence between Christians and Muslims in Ghana, noting that churches and mosques do not compete for dominance but rather coexist in mutual respect and dignity.

“In Ghana, churches and mosques do not compete for dominance. They coexist in mutual respect and in dignity. Our different traditions and our backgrounds have not weakened us. They have strengthened us in our shared identity,” he remarked.

President Mahama reminded citizens that true thanksgiving is not merely expressed in words but in actions that reflect unity, justice, and compassion.

“Let us speak words that heal, not words that harm, let us be honest in our dealings, generous in our compassion, and upright in our conduct,” he urged.

He called on both leaders and citizens to uphold values that strengthen the nation, stressing accountability, humility, and a sustained commitment to peace.

President Mahama has officially designated Republic Day which falls on July 1, as Ghana’s National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving, to be celebrated annually.

The Founder and General Overseer of Action Chapel International, Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams, has called on President John Dramani Mahama to seize his second term as an opportunity to strengthen Ghana’s economy and further stabilise the local currency, the cedi.

Speaking during the National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, in Accra, Duncan-Williams urged the president to leave a lasting legacy for generations to come.

“Mr President, within three years, make a difference. Impact this world and change the narrative of Ghana. Let the cedi thrive under your leadership. Let the cedi flourish under your leadership and let things get better and better under your leadership like never before,” he said.

He called for the immediate development of a comprehensive national agenda, similar to long-term development plans in countries like China, India, and Dubai, which, according to him, have 100-year national visions that transcend political cycles.

“Ghana, our motherland, is where our vision and agenda are. Under the leadership of President John Dramani Mahama, a national agenda will be established to compel all stakeholders to follow that agenda,” he added.

Men are not made to be with one woman sexually – 2Baba

Nigerian musician Innocent Idibia, popularly known as 2Baba Nigerian musician Innocent Idibia, popularly known as 2Baba

Nigerian musician Innocent Idibia, popularly known as 2Baba, has sparked controversy on social media following a comment he made during a recent podcast appearance.

In a video shared on X on June 30, 2025, 2Baba stated that men are not biologically built to be with just one woman sexually.

He explained that while a man can love and respect a woman deeply, it is difficult for him to remain sexually faithful to only one partner.

“Sexually, it is impossible for a man to be with just one woman. His heart, love, and respect can belong to one woman, but sexually, men are not built to stick to one woman. A man can love a woman completely, but staying with only her isn’t possible,” he said.

He further argued that men are naturally polygamous.

2Baba said many relationship problems, including heartbreak and emotional distress, could be avoided if society accepted polygamous relationships.

“What I’m saying is based on biology, and anyone who wants to argue with me can go ahead. This is a fact, and we need to accept it. A lot of heartbreak and unnecessary stress would be avoided if we just embraced this simple truth,” he added.

His comments have since triggered mixed reactions on social media.

While some users criticised the ‘African Queen’ hitmaker, accusing him of promoting indiscipline and adultery, others expressed support for his viewpoint.

One user on X commented, “When someone does something wrong and starts lying to themselves, they begin to seek facts or opinions that justify their actions. Now imagine such a person being influential and affluent, they become another version of wrong in society.

“2Face is slowly becoming, or has already become, a terrible example. He’s the reason people now believe ALL MEN are naturally polygamous (not even polyamorous, sef). Someone who isn’t a scientist is now trying to ‘fact-check’ nonsense.”

Another user added, “Only a disciplined and God-fearing man sticks to one woman.”

Stakeholders at AASUP technical workshop on ESG compliance Stakeholders at AASUP technical workshop on ESG compliance

As Ghana marks ten years of progress under the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Association of African Sustainability Practitioners (AASUP) has intensified efforts to support state institutions in meeting their climate and sustainability obligations.

AASUP on June 27, 2025, held a high-level training workshop for the State Interests and Governance Authority (SIGA) focused on enhancing capacity in Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) reporting and climate risk compliance.

The session brought together SIGA officials and sustainability experts to examine global ESG standards, regulatory frameworks, and performance-based reporting models.

Speaking at the technical workshop, the president of AASUP, Humphrey Tetteh, described the initiative as a critical step in shifting national efforts from climate awareness to concrete action.

“Every company must now report on their climate-related activities, and SIGA, as a key regulator, should be equipped to lead. This is how Ghana can meet its global commitments to reduce emissions and build a sustainable future,” he said.

To address the skills gap in the sustainability sector, Tetteh also announced a partnership between AASUP and Accra Technical University to deliver certified climate training programmes aimed at developing a workforce ready to implement climate and ESG policies on the ground.

“The sustainability space is one of the most in-demand fields globally. We can’t rely solely on traditional degree paths that don’t reflect the skills needed in practice,” he added.

The Head of Risk and Sustainability Management at the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund, Kwadwo Kwakye Gyan emphasised SIGA’s pivotal role in ensuring state-owned enterprises (SOEs) comply with evolving ESG standards.

According to the Head of Planning, Research and Strategy at SIGA, James Korsa said the training aligns with the authority’s strategy to integrate sustainability into governance.

He said the ESG indicators will be further embedded into performance contracts with public institutions.

“We’ve already included green indicators in our performance contracts, but we’ll be expanding that to reflect ESG and climate action in a more comprehensive way. This will help align institutions with national and international targets,” he noted.

The highest-living frog in Africa discovered on Mount Kilimanjaro

0

A surprising splash of life startled a team of trekkers navigating the alpine heights of Mount Kilimanjaro.

At an elevation of 3,960 metres above sea level—where icy winds lash and the landscape appears lifeless—they spotted a tiny frog hopping near a stream.

The discovered Amietia wittei clings to a mossy rock, blending perfectly into its icy alpine surroundings.

Long thought unable to survive at such extremes, this amphibian’s presence marked a milestone in African herpetology.

The frog, first seen by a team from Altezza Travel, prompted immediate interest from researchers.

Until then, no amphibians had been documented above 3,000 metres in this region.

What began as a curious sighting quickly evolved into a scientific investigation.

In February 2025, a dedicated expedition led by the Tanzania Wildlife Research Institute (Tawiri), in partnership with Altezza Travel, returned to the upper slopes of Kilimanjaro.

Scientists Wilirk Ngalason Mroso, Shayo Adolph Felix, Juma Idd Kimera and Yoel Kitungul, accompanied by seasoned guides, surveyed four icy streams between 3,600 and 4,100 metres.

Their mission was to confirm the frogs’ presence and assess their ecological significance.

Among them was a renowned South African herpetologist, Prof Alan Channing, who joined the team to lead the taxonomic analysis.

Over five challenging days, the researchers found several frog populations thriving in small alpine pools—definitive proof that these cold-blooded creatures had carved out a niche at the roof of Africa.

Subsequent DNA analysis identified the species as Amietia wittei, or Witte’s River Frog.

While the species was already known to science, its discovery at such an altitude was unprecedented.

“We were stunned. This is now the highest-dwelling frog species recorded on the African continent,” said Prof Channing.

These frogs were found nearly 1,000 metres above their previously known range, making them not just a biological curiosity, but also a possible indicator of environmental shifts on Africa’s tallest mountain.

A mountain of surprises

The expedition’s lead guide, Mr Peter Lyamuya, was among the first to spot the frog.

With dozens of Kilimanjaro ascents to his name, he described the encounter as “one of my proudest moments. Nature still holds secrets, even in places we think we know.”

Guides and porters from Altezza Travel played a vital role, carrying research equipment, navigating the remote terrain, and assisting in frog collection—all under sub-zero conditions.

Although Kilimanjaro is one of Africa’s most visited natural landmarks, this discovery highlights the mountain’s often-overlooked biological richness.

“Finding frogs at that altitude is like discovering life on another planet—it’s truly astounding,” said Prof Channing.

An amphibian like no other

In recent years, scientists have uncovered a wave of new amphibian species. Seven new tree frogs were documented in Madagascar in 2024, while researchers in Tanzania’s Ukaguru Mountains found a ‘silent’ frog species that communicates using throat spines instead of sound.

But the Kilimanjaro frogs are unique. They were not hidden deep in an uncharted jungle, but thriving in one of the continent’s best-known tourist destinations.

Their survival in cold, oxygen-poor air—where temperatures drop well below freezing at night—demonstrates a rare and extreme form of adaptation.

Globally, fewer than ten frog species have been recorded above 4,000 metres. Until now, none had been found at such elevations in Africa.

“For a typically tropical animal to survive up there challenges what we thought we knew about amphibian ecology,” said one member of the research team, adding: “It’s like a frog climbed to the top of Africa and decided to stay.”

Fragile waters, rising threats

With the discovery comes responsibility. Scientists are now assessing the conservation needs of these highland amphibians, which face mounting environmental threats.

One pressing concern is pollution from trekking-related activities. Each year, tens of thousands of climbers ascend Kilimanjaro. Porters often wash utensils directly in mountain streams using soaps and detergents—small acts that add up over time.

“We observed frogs were absent in areas where washing had occurred,” said Tawiri’s Wilirk Mroso, adding. “Even minor pollution could be driving them away.”

Water scarcity is another looming issue. The research team noted a significant decline in stream flow, likely linked to climate change.

“Three of the five streams we surveyed dry up completely during the dry season,” added Mr Mroso.

For a frog whose tadpoles may require up to two years to mature in frigid waters, this could mean entire generations wiped out by prolonged drought.

Natural predators also pose a threat. Species such as herons, while native to the ecosystem, benefit from the reduced stream depth and cover, making it easier to prey on vulnerable tadpoles.

Protected, but not immune

There is, however, cause for optimism. The frogs’ habitat lies entirely within Kilimanjaro National Park (Kinapa), offering protection from logging, farming, and infrastructure development.

Yet researchers argue that legal protection is not enough.

To secure the frogs’ future, the team recommends tighter regulation of detergents and waste disposal, ongoing water quality monitoring, and improved environmental awareness among both trekkers and tour operators.

“This isn’t just about saving a frog—it’s about protecting the entire mountain ecosystem,” said Dmitry Andreichuk, expedition leader at Altezza Travel.

Frogs are widely regarded as bioindicators—organisms that reflect the overall health of an environment.

Their decline could foreshadow broader ecological damage affecting other wildlife and even human communities downstream.

“Protecting the frogs protects the streams. And protecting the streams protects us all,” said Prof Channing.

Many villages around Kilimanjaro rely on water from these mountain springs for drinking, agriculture, and daily needs. Cleaner water sources mean healthier communities.

Guides become guardians

For Mr Lyamuya and his colleagues, the discovery has reshaped their view of the mountain they’ve guided for years.

“This frog may be tiny, but its discovery sends a big message. We must protect its fragile home. In doing so, we also protect Kilimanjaro’s natural heritage,” he said.

Tawiri and Altezza Travel expressed gratitude to Tawiri director general Dr Eblate Mjingo, Tanzania National Parks Authority (Tanapa), Conservation Commissioner, Mr Musa Juma, and Kinapa chief park warden, Ms Angela Nyaki, for supporting the expedition.

As word of the discovery spreads, it serves as a reminder: even well-trodden landscapes can still hold untold wonders.

The frogs of Kilimanjaro have leapt into the scientific spotlight, challenging assumptions and prompting fresh calls for conservation.

Their story is not only about survival—but stewardship. Of mountains, waters, and the delicate connections that sustain life.

‘I’m Still A Minister Of God’

Kuami Eugene

Ghanaian musician, Kuami Eugene, has stated that despite his mainstream success in secular music, he still considers himself a minister of God.

In an interview with Doreen Avio, the award-winning highlife artiste explained that his journey began in the church, where he was groomed both spiritually and musically. According to him, his identity as a gospel minister has not changed.

“Sometimes I see a post on social, somebody wants to bring something, Eugene Marfo will just pop up. I’m still a minister of God and the transition started from the church.

“The church taught me every single thing that I know how to play the piano, guitar and everything. When I was schooling, I was still doing the music while I was playing drums for the church. I was still doing the music thing, but the push wasn’t there like I’m getting now,” he said.

Kuami Eugene also shared how a trip to the Volta Region for a gospel event played a key role in changing the course of his life and career. Invited by a friend who was a pupil teacher at the time, the trip became a turning point.

“She was a pupil teacher and she invited me there for like a three-day convention with her church. I was Minister Eugene Marfo then. That was actually where I had my first pay, so shout out to that female friend of mine,” he recalled.

Following that experience, he was selected for MTN Hitmaker, where he emerged second runner-up before being signed by Lynx Entertainment. That marked the beginning of his rise in Ghana’s music industry.

He credited God, his family, and key mentors like Richie Mensah and Eric Goka for their support in his journey.

Kuami Eugene, born Eugene Marfo, has since become one of Ghana’s most prominent musicians, known for hit songs such as AngelaWish Me WellOpen Gate, and Monica.

He has won several awards including Highlife Artiste of the Year and Artiste of the Year at the Telecel Ghana Awards.

Seek bail review in court, not public space – Sukparu tells Wahab’s Lawyers

0

Member of Parliament for Sissala West, Mohammed Adams Sukparu, has urged the legal team of former National Food Buffer Stock Company CEO, Abdul Hannan Wahab, to avoid politicising the bail conditions set by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), and instead seek redress through the courts.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Tuesday, July 1, Sukparu emphasised that suspects who consider bail terms excessive have the legal right to apply for a variation.

“When you are detained and granted bail, and you think the bail condition is too much for you to provide, you can go to court for it to vary,” he explained.

He cautioned against turning the matter into a political debate, stressing the need to allow EOCO to carry out its investigations without interference.

“I will use this opportunity to urge the lawyers that we should not do politics with it. They should use the right thing, which is the court, to seek the variation so that they can grant them bail for EOCO to also continue with its investigation,” he said.

His comments come in the wake of the arrest of Abdul Hannan Wahab and his wife during a coordinated EOCO operation in Accra and Tamale on Wednesday, June 25, 2025.

The two are being investigated for alleged offences including tax evasion, money laundering, and causing financial loss to the state.

Mr. Wahab was granted bail of GHS 50 million with two sureties, both to be justified, while his wife received a GHS 30 million bail under similar terms.

Government launches national secretariat to oversee all anti-galamsey operations

Jemima Okang Addae

1 minute read

The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources has inaugurated a new intelligence-led secretariat to serve as the central coordinating body for all anti-illegal mining operations nationwide.

The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) is a product of inter-agency collaboration aimed at addressing the environmental devastation caused by illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.

In a statement issued by the Ministry’s Director of Communications, Ama Mawusi Mawuenyefia, it was noted that the Secretariat’s core function is to initiate, coordinate, and supervise all activities geared toward combating illegal mining and its associated harms.

“The objective of NAIMOS is to create a well-coordinated framework to guide the nationwide crackdown on illegal mining,” the statement read.

The Ministry also stressed that no individual or group—formal or informal—will be permitted to embark on any anti-illegal mining operation without prior consultation and approval from the Secretariat.

“For the avoidance of doubt, all anti-galamsey operations, swoops, and raids conducted without the express authorisation of NAIMOS are strongly discouraged,” Ms Mawuenyefia added.

The Ministry believes this centralised approach will ensure consistency, accountability, and efficiency in the fight against illegal mining, which continues to pose a significant threat to Ghana’s natural resources and water bodies.

‘Nobody will harass you under NDC’

0

A private legal practitioner and member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) communications team, Hamza Sayibu Suhuyini, has praised the NDC for fostering an environment that protects and encourages dissent, press freedom, and civic expression.

Addressing recent criticisms from the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) on TV3’s “New Day” on Tuesday, July 1, Suhuyini asserted that such open criticisms are indicative of the NDC’s tolerance for opposing views.

“It is exciting because it shows that during the reign of a particular political party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), dissenting views, which is a fundamental pillar of democratic governance, is encouraged,” he stated.

He argued that under the NDC’s leadership, citizens can voice their criticisms of the government without fear of political retaliation or state harassment.

“There is no way you speak your mind and find it difficult to go home,” Suhuyini declared.

“Even if your views go against the government, you are rest assured that nobody will use state power to harass you,” he said.

Referring to recent attacks on journalists in the country, Suhuyini drew a veiled comparison between political regimes, suggesting the NDC upholds civil liberties more consistently than its opponents.

“I’m pretty much convinced that you have come to accept that your freedoms were meddled on the streets in broad daylight like we witnessed in the past. May the soul of Ahmed Suale rest in peace,” he stated.

Suhuyini urged institutions like the GBA to appreciate the democratic space they operate within, attributing it to the NDC’s steadfast commitment to Ghana’s constitutional freedoms.

“These freedoms we represent simply constitute a manifestation of our commitment to the fundamental laws of this country,” he said.

Explaining his appearance in the photo that sparked the trolling, Akwaboah recounted a stressful workday in which he performed at a show outside Accra and had to travel to and from the city overnight.

“I had a show at Kwahu. I had to leave Accra at 8:30 in the evening, got there at midnight, did my show and a little meet and greet, and then had to get back to Accra. I got back at 7 am and still had to go to church because I can’t miss church.

“So, I didn’t sleep throughout that night. And I was so tired. After church, my wife insisted on taking a picture and decided to share on social media. Then I went to sleep. Only to wake up and some people had zoomed into my tired face and were saying things on social media about me and my marriage,” he recounted.

Despite the harsh comments, Akwaboah stated that he and his wife were not bothered by the comments.

“People mocked my looks, claimed marriage aged me, and even dragged my wife. But their trolling doesn’t pay my bills,” he said.

The musician lamented the general attitude of Ghanaians toward celebrities, stating, “I don’t know why we have reduced the industry to this. Because it is only in Ghana that we do this. But there is a wise saying that you are what you say. So, if you say bad things about people, the same will happen to you.”

GoldBod to crack down on illegal gold trading after GhanaWeb’s illegal gold market documentary

0

The Ghana Gold Board has issued a stern warning to individuals trading gold without a license, following GhanaWeb’s recent documentary, which uncovered numerous shops in Wassa-Akropong operating without the necessary permits.

The documentary, titled “The Gold Market That Fuels Galamsey,” highlighted the proliferation of unlicensed gold shops in the Western Region town, where the lucrative nature of gold trading has driven widespread illegal small-scale mining.

Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board, Sammy Gyamfi, has warned that anyone trading gold without a valid GoldBod license will be arrested and prosecuted.

Addressing journalists on June 30, 2025, Gyamfi stated, “If you are not licensed by the Ghana Gold Board, you are committing a crime if you buy gold or engage in any form of gold trading.”

He emphasised that traders holding licenses under the now-defunct Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC) regime can no longer operate unless they reapply under the new GoldBod system.

“We will no longer continue to recognize licenses issued under the old regime,” he added.

On compliance, Gyamfi noted that President John Dramani Mahama is set to inaugurate the GoldBod Taskforce to clamp down on illegal gold trading, gold smuggling, and price distortions in the gold market.

“With the establishment of the Gold Board and the integration of the task force under the direction of President Mahama and the Minister of Finance, we hope to intensify the fight against smuggling. The approach so far has been ad hoc. We have been relying on national security personnel on a temporary basis.

“So, you realise that anytime we deploy national security, the market becomes disciplined. But when they are withdrawn, illegal activities quickly resume,” he said.

Sammy Gyamfi stressed that the new task force will be permanent and will serve as a constant enforcement presence in the gold market.

“This time around, we are not going to recall them. We will have a permanent, standby force protecting the national interest, ensuring that everyone trading in gold is licensed.

“To have a license means we have your data, we’ve conducted the necessary due diligence on you, we know the source of the funds you’re using to trade in gold, and we can confirm that it’s clean money, not connected to money laundering or terrorism financing,” he explained.

According to Gyamfi, these initiatives form part of the government’s broader agenda to combat illegal mining and safeguard the environment.

Gold coin is a strategic measure to discourage the hoarding of US dollars Gold coin is a strategic measure to discourage the hoarding of US dollars

Prices of the Bank of Ghana’s (BoG) gold coins have increased slightly in response to the performance of the cedi against the dollar on the interbank foreign exchange market.

The Central Bank introduced the gold coins as a strategic measure to discourage the hoarding of US dollars.

As of Tuesday, July 1, 2025, the bank reported the following updated prices:

– The 0.25 oz coin is now selling at GH¢9,427.45, up from GH¢9,386.83 on June 30, 2025.

– The 0.50 oz coin is priced at GH¢18,139.84, down from GH¢18,058.60.

– The 1.00 oz coin is selling for GH¢35,606.98, down from GH¢35,444.48.

According to the Central Bank, the initiative is designed to absorb excess liquidity in the market and help strengthen the Ghana cedi against major foreign currencies.

The Ghana gold coin is available in three denominations: one-ounce, half-ounce, and quarter-ounce, and it is being sold through commercial banks.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), Richard Ofori Agyemang, has promised a cash reward to motivate Asante Kotoko players ahead of their fierce showdown with Hearts of Oak in the 2025 President’s Cup.

The Mayor has pledged to reward Kotoko players with $200 for every goal they score against their arch-rivals, with an extra incentive to hit five goals and pocket a total of $1,000.

Speaking at the team’s training grounds on Monday, June 30, where he was accompanied by Ashanti Regional Minister Frank Amoakohene, Ofori Agyemang urged the players to make the Ashanti Region proud by putting Hearts to the sword.

“We want you to give us five goals. Every goal you score, you will earn $200. We will bring the money to the stadium. If you can score the five goals, you will earn $1,000. So, on Sunday, just make sure you beat Hearts of Oak for us,” he told the squad.

The Porcupine Warriors will lock horns with their old rivals on Sunday, July 6, at the Accra Sports Stadium, with kick-off at 4 pm.

US to deny visas to Ugandans seeking ‘Birth Tourism’

US to deny visas to Ugandans seeking 'Birth Tourism' US to deny visas to Ugandans seeking ‘Birth Tourism’

The US Mission in Uganda has issued a statement warning Ugandans planning to travel to the United States for the primary purpose of giving birth, stating that such practices are considered “birth tourism” and are not permitted under US immigration policy.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter) shared on July 1, 2025, the US Mission Uganda said consular officers will deny visa applications if they have reason to believe the applicant intends to travel for childbirth to secure U.S. citizenship for their child.

“Using your visa to travel for the primary purpose of giving birth in the United States so that your child will have U.S. citizenship is not permitted,” the post reads. “Consular officers will deny your visa application if they have reason to believe this is your intent.”

The Mission further noted that many Ugandan parents holding tourist visas have traveled to the United States with the aim of delivering children, often relying on American government assistance to cover medical costs.

“These costs are passed on to the American taxpayer,” the Mission added, saying that such parents “may not be eligible to renew their visas in the future.”

The message comes at a time of growing scrutiny by US immigration authorities, particularly in cases where visitors appear to exploit visa categories meant for temporary stays.

“Birth tourism” has long drawn criticism from US policymakers who argue that it strains public resources and undermines immigration integrity.

The Trump administration continues to tighten access to the US for immigrants from specific countries to protect their interests. Visa overstays and immigration fraud have also been cited as reasons for considering travel bans for countries like Uganda, Nigeria, Tanzania, and Sudan.

In June, the Department of State was considering travel restrictions for Ugandans as concerns about immigration misuse remain high, especially where birthright citizenship is involved.

The US Embassy requires visa applicants to be transparent about the purpose of their travel, warning that misrepresentation can result in future ineligibility for US visas.

The announcement by the mission in Uganda is part of a broader effort by the US Department of State to curb birth tourism and maintain the integrity of its visa system.

There are an estimated more than 30,000 Ugandan immigrants in the US, contributing the highest remittances among the diaspora community. Most Ugandans travel to the US to seek better education and healthcare.

Okyeame Kwame

Celebrated Ghanaian musician and entrepreneur, Okyeame Kwame, has revealed plans to embark on a landmark project with the government before the end of the current administration.

In an interview with George Quaye on Joy Prime television’s PrimeTime, the award-winning rapper said his academic commitments had delayed his engagements with state institutions, but discussions are ongoing.

“Because of school, I have been a little busy. Research and literature review. I have been a little busy so I have not had the time to pay courtesy calls on [the right institutions],” he said.

When asked whether he had political affiliations, Okyeame Kwame clarified: “You know I am ‘Made in Ghana’.”

“But I have visited KOD, we have had conversations, and hopefully, I will go and water those conversations, and I think something amazing will come out. Before the end of this four years, I will do something with government and it will be historic,” he stated.

Though he did not disclose details, the announcement has sparked public interest in what the collaboration may entail, especially considering his longstanding involvement in national campaigns.

Okyeame Kwame, known in showbiz circles as ‘the Rap Dacta’, has consistently used his influence to promote Ghanaian identity, culture and responsible citizenship. He served as the face of the Ministry of Trade and Industry’s Made in Ghana campaign and has been a key advocate for health and environmental awareness initiatives, including hepatitis B screenings and climate action.

He has also been actively engaged in arts education, creative industry policy advocacy, and sustainability campaigns, earning him both national and international recognition.

If realised, the proposed project could further strengthen ties between Ghana’s creative sector and state institutions, adding to Okyeame Kwame’s legacy as one of the country’s most socially engaged creatives.

Ghana lacks coordinated policy to tackle growing slum crisis – Urban Governance Expert

0

Urban governance and sustainable development expert, Farouk Braimah, has criticised Ghana’s failure to adopt a clear, coordinated national strategy to address the country’s growing slum crisis, despite years of political pledges and scattered interventions.

Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show with Bernard Avle on Tuesday, July 1, Mr. Braimah noted that Ghana continues to grapple with the challenge of informal settlements due to the absence of a concrete slum development or prevention policy.

His remarks follow the release of a new Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) report, Slum and Informal Settlements in Ghana, which revealed that 30.8% of the country’s urban population—about 4.8 million people—live in slums. This figure surpasses the global average of 24.7%, though it remains below the Sub-Saharan African average of 53.9%.

“One of the key points I want to raise, even though it is getting better, is that we do not have any planned policy,” Braimah stated.

“As a country, we’ve been battling issues of urban poverty since the late ’90s and early 2000s, but we still do not have an operational slum plan or policy that guides government interventions.”

He acknowledged that the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Ministry of Local Government had previously developed a draft national slum prevention policy. However, he lamented its lack of implementation.

“I think that document must be given some oxygen to be implemented at the district level,” he stressed.

Mr. Braimah also blamed poor investment planning and fragmented institutional responsibilities for the deepening crisis.

“As a country, we’ve not invested in key areas in a coordinated way. Issues of drainage, transport, sanitation, and housing are all interconnected. When efforts are compartmentalised, the impact is lost,” he noted.

He further argued that spatial plans created by many city authorities fall short of real infrastructure transformation due to the absence of actionable, physical designs.

“This again tells you that our local government system is not functioning as it should,” he said.

Mr. Braimah called for immediate cross-sector collaboration and the empowerment of local authorities to implement comprehensive, long-term solutions to slum development.
