Prime Minister Narendra Modi has accepted Ghana’s highest state honour, recognising it as a symbol of immense pride for the 1.4 billion people of India.

During his visit to Ghana, Prime Minister Modi was conferred with the Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana, the country’s highest civilian honour, by President John Mahama.

“It is of immense pride and honour for me to be conferred with Ghana’s highest honour… I express my deep gratitude to President Mahama, the Government of Ghana, and the people of Ghana. I humbly accept this honour on behalf of 1.4 billion Indians,” he stated.

In his acceptance speech, delivered on July 3, 2025, Prime Minister Modi expressed gratitude towards the Ghanaian President and dedicated the award to the youth of both nations, emphasising shared values and historical ties.

He also announced plans to enhance cooperation through a “Comprehensive Partnership,” focusing on defense, security, skill development, and support for Ghana’s ‘Feed Ghana’ program.

Modi pledged to double trade between India and Ghana over the next five years and to share India’s digital payment platform, Bharat UPI.

He also highlighted the importance of collaboration in counter-terrorism efforts.

“We have decided to double our trade within the next 5 years. In the area of FinTech, Bharat UPI will share the digital payment experience with Ghana,” he affirmed.

President Mahama welcomed Modi, noting the enduring relationship between the two countries, rooted in the legacy of their first leaders, Ghana’s first President Kwame Nkrumah and India’s former Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru.

This visit marks the first by an Indian Prime Minister to Ghana in over 30 years and underscores the commitment of both nations to mutual growth and cooperation.

Don’t launch policies and hide documents- Oppong Nkrumah to government

0

The Member of Parliament for Ofoase Ayirebi, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has called on the NDC government to submit all newly launched policies, including the 24-hour economy initiative, to Parliament for scrutiny, monitoring, and evaluation.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem morning show, the former Information Minister expressed worry over what he described as a growing trend of the government launching major programmes without presenting the necessary documentation to Parliament.

He said it is not the first time the NDC has launched a policy and failed to provide the details to Parliament, citing the instance of the One Million Coders programme, which he accused them of launching without bringing any document to parliament.

The Ranking Member on the Economy and Development Committee also referenced President Mahama’s recent announcement during his tour of the Bono Region that over 2,000 Ghanaians had been selected to travel abroad for work.

He said the president claimed the government had signed a contract to help more than 2,000 Ghanaians travel and work abroad, which he (Oppong Nkrumah) described as fine, but demanded that parliament must see the paperwork to understand the processes involved.

Oppong Nkrumah said while such initiatives may appear promising, Parliament must be allowed to perform its oversight role, explaining that one cannot keep launching programmes and avoid accountability.

After every launch, bring the document to Parliament. Let’s evaluate it, ask questions, and monitor progress. That’s how governance works, he added.

Touching specifically on the 24-hour Economy policy, which has now been officially launched, Mr. Nkrumah warned that failure to submit the full policy framework to Parliament could lead to doubts about the government’s transparency.

This 24-hour economy is very important. But without bringing the full document for monitoring, how can we hold them accountable? They want to avoid scrutiny, and that’s not right, he said.

He claimed the NDC has so far launched about six key policies since assuming office, but only one has been submitted to Parliament for review.

They passed the E-Levy at night—no public engagement. They launched the Adwumawura programme and still haven’t brought even a single page explaining what it entails. The National Apprenticeship Programme, the AGRAC Economic Transformation Agenda—same story. Where are the documents? he queried.

Meanwhile, the newly launched 24-hour Economy policy spans 283 pages and provides detailed plans for implementation and funding. It also signals a shift in focus—from merely keeping businesses open around the clock to addressing broader structural challenges in Ghana’s economy.

Mr. Oppong Nkrumah urged the government not to repeat past mistakes.

We’re not saying don’t implement your programmes. Just do the right thing and bring them to Parliament. Let’s all work together in the interest of accountability and transparency, he stressed.

The Assembly presented maize, palm oil, Heineken beer and soft drinks.

Minority Leader demands EC explanation in Parliament

0

Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin is the Minority Leader in Parliament Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin is the Minority Leader in Parliament

The Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, has condemned the Electoral Commission’s (EC) decision to hold a rerun of the Ablekuma North parliamentary election, describing the move as “unfair” and “unjust.”

Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Thursday, July 3, 2025, Afenyo-Markin expressed concern over the EC’s sudden and unexplained reversal on the electoral process.

“Yesterday, we woke up to a surprise announcement by the Electoral Commission. The Commission informed the nation that there would be a rerun of the elections on July 11, 2025 and they listed polling stations where these elections would take place,” he said.

The Minority Leader challenged the EC’s integrity, referencing the Commission’s own earlier statements.

“When the Mandamus order was granted by the courts and the EC was in the process of finalising the collation amid disturbances, they themselves issued a public statement and addressed the press, telling the people of Ghana that only three polling stations remained to finalise the collation process and enable them to declare the results,” he noted.

He also pointed out that the EC had previously requested police protection to complete the collation and questioned what had changed.

“Not long after that, they wrote to the Ghana Police Service requesting security. A member of this House filed an urgent question, which compelled the EC to appear before Parliament. The Deputy Chair, Dr Bossman, sitting in for his boss, told us that all they needed was security to finish collation at the three polling stations. I ask, what has changed? Mr. Speaker, we must be careful how we manage our democracy,” he remarked.

Recalling a previous electoral incident, he said, “Today, we have a member in this chamber from Dome/Kwabenya because, when only a few polling stations were left, the EC relied on tally cards. Michael Oquaye Jnr. protested, but he did so without violence. He did not storm the EC collation centre with his constituents. He expressed his disagreement in a civil manner.”

Afenyo-Markin further questioned the EC’s independence.

“It is unfair. It is unjust. Is it the case, and I don’t want to believe it is, that recent public comments by some senior politicians are forcing the EC to act to safeguard their positions? Are they succumbing to the whims and caprices of certain extremists or hardliners? It is not fair. Maybe today this decision benefits some people, but tomorrow it may not.”

He urged Parliament to hold the EC accountable.

“I would humbly plead with my colleague opposite to schedule the EC to appear before us. We just welcomed Prime Minister Modi, who commended us on our democratic strides. We must not take these democratic gains for granted. Many countries in our sub-region wish they were Ghana, but they lost their way because they failed to protect their institutions and now they are paying dearly for it.”

“Let’s not find ourselves saying ‘had I known.’ The EC must come to this House and brief us on why, despite their earlier clear position, they have now changed course. We must not allow this to pass without explanation. Mr. Speaker, I expect that next week, the EC will be scheduled to appear and provide answers.”

On Thursday, June 19, 2025, the EC had stated that it was not yet at the point of declaring the election inconclusive.

“For Ablekuma North, we have not reached the point where we can say we do not have results. When we try and cannot obtain the results, then we will consider a rerun. A rerun is a last option,” the EC said at the time.

However, on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, the EC announced it would rerun the Ablekuma North parliamentary election in 19 out of 37 polling stations on Friday, July 11, 2025.

According to the Commission, the decision followed extensive consultations with the two major political parties.

The EC said this meeting was a follow-up to an earlier engagement held on June 12, where both parties presented their positions regarding the disputed parliamentary seat.

Both parties reportedly maintained their initial positions from the previous meeting.

The Ablekuma North seat is being contested by Ewurabena Aubynn of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and Ana Akua Owusu Afriyie of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

‘This is too excessive, it was just GH¢540’

Lawyer for convicted evengelist Patricia Asiedua, aka Agradaa Lawyer for convicted evengelist Patricia Asiedua, aka Agradaa

Following the sentencing of evangelist Patricia Asiedua, famously known as “Nana Agradaa,” to 15 years in jail, her lawyers have described the sentence as “too excessive.”

The founder of Heavenway International Church was sentenced to 15 years with hard labour for charlatanic advertisement and defrauding by false pretences on July 3, 2025.

An Accra Circuit Court, presided over by Justice Evelyn Asamoah, passed the judgement after a pregnancy test was conducted on Agradaa.

However, Agradaa’s lawyers claim that the sentencing was given not based on the case at hand but simply due to Agradaa’s personality.

Addressing the media outside the court premises, her lawyers said that they would file an appeal on Monday, July 7, 2025.

“We will trigger processes on Monday. We believe that the sentence of 15 years is too excessive. Even the amount involved is just GH¢540. How can someone be alleged to have defrauded someone of GH¢540 and be convicted for 15 years?

“Agradaa has been jailed just because of who she is and not because of what she has done,” they claimed.

Her lawyers also denied claims that Agradaa’s behaviour throughout the court procedures may have influenced her sentencing, stating that she has never missed her day of court, nor has she failed to submit evidence.

“From day 1, the lady has always appeared before the court. These sentences are passed just to appease the public because of who she is and not because of the case or evidence provided… It is an indication of a premeditated mind,” he said.

Background:

In 2022, Agradaa was arrested over allegations of fraud involving some members of her church.

According to the complaints, Agradaa advertised on her TV station and social media that she could double the money of those who attended an all-night church service at her Weija-based church.

During the service, she reportedly asked over 1,000 attendees to hand over their money, promising supernatural returns.

However, the promised “money doubling” never happened, leading to widespread outrage and numerous complaints to the police.

She was subsequently charged with charlatanic advertisement and defrauding by false pretences.

On July 3, 2025, an Accra Circuit Court found Agradaa guilty on both counts. Before sentencing, the court ordered a pregnancy test, a common legal procedure to determine appropriate custodial measures for female convicts.

When she asserted that she was unable to pay, the situation escalated dramatically.

One of the collectors reportedly grabbed her, initiating a physical struggle.

The incident has quickly gone viral, with many condemning the collector’s actions as excessive and potentially illegal.

Social media users are expressing their outrage and calling for authorities to investigate the matter and hold those responsible accountable.

Palestinian footballer Muhannad al-Lili has died from injuries he sustained when Israeli forces bombed his family home in the Maghazi refugee camp, in central Gaza.

Al-Lili, who played for Nadi Khadamat al-Maghazi football club, was gravely wounded in the airstrike a few days ago. Despite desperate efforts to save him, he succumbed to his injuries, local outlet The Cradle confirmed.

His death is another devastating blow to Palestinian sport, already battered by the ongoing conflict that has cost countless lives and uprooted entire communities.

Muhannad al-Lili’s passing has sparked an outpouring of grief in the local football community, where he was known not only for his talent on the pitch but for representing hope and pride for his club and fans amid unimaginable hardship.

Since October 2023, Israel’s war in Gaza has killed over 57,000 people, with some estimates closer to 75,000, and left tens of thousands more wounded.

Entire neighbourhoods, hospitals, and farmland have been destroyed, pushing millions to the brink of famine and forcing almost the entire population to flee multiple times.

Aid points have turned deadly, with dozens killed while waiting for food. The UN has described the situation as “apocalyptic,” as Gaza’s people endure relentless airstrikes, hunger, and mounting civilian casualties.

“NDC in Power, But Arrests Continue’ – Tensions Escalate as Executives Remanded in Assin Central

News Hub Creator1h

Tensions within the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Assin Central have reached a boiling point as aggrieved members protest against the Central Regional Chairman, Mr. Richard Kofi Asiedu, following the police remand of two party executives, Mr. Andoh Ohenebeng and Mr. Boadi Prince Kwame as reported by ModernGhana

The conflict dates back to the 2024 general elections, when Mr. Asiedu controversially withdrew the candidacy of Assin Central MP, Nurein Shiabu Migyimah. Asiedu claimed that Migyimah had an inappropriate relationship with the wife of the Constituency Secretary.

However, the NDC’s National Functional Executive Committee overturned this decision, and Mr. Asiedu was suspended in July 2024 for the unlawful withdrawal.

The situation took a more dramatic turn in July 2025 when the Assin Nsuaem Kyekyewere Circuit Court remanded Ohenebeng and Boadi over allegations that they spread false information about Mr. Asiedu.

They accused him of sabotaging the Assin Central MP’s nomination for Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), alleging that Asiedu bribed assembly members to reject the nominee and vowed to undermine the MP’s future elections.

Protests erupted on social media, with supporters of the NDC expressing their anger. “Did we follow the NDC only to be arrested?” one member questioned.

Many are accusing Mr. Asiedu of attempting to silence his critics through intimidation, particularly those aligned with the Assin Central MP.

Party members are now calling on President John Dramani Mahama and the Attorney General to intervene to secure the release of the detained executives and prevent further divisions within the party.

Ablekuma North: We’ve never supported the decision for rerun

0

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has refuted claims by the Electoral Commission (EC) that there was consensus during consultations leading to the decision to rerun the parliamentary election in the Ablekuma North constituency.

The EC, in a statement issued on July 2, announced that it would conduct a rerun of the December 7, 2024, parliamentary election in Ablekuma North.

The decision, according to the Commission, followed disputes over the authenticity of the election results and came after what it described as “extensive consultations and a review of the electoral process” in the affected constituency.

However, speaking at a press conference on July 3, NPP General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong pushed back against the EC’s narrative, insisting that the party did not support the decision.

“At the meeting with the EC on July 1, our representative — our Director of Elections, Evans Nimako, and the former Member of Parliament for Ablekuma Central, Ebenezer Nartey — vehemently opposed the decision by the EC,” Mr. Frimpong said.

“So it cannot be that after extensive discussions, the EC is painting the picture as if the party [NPP] there agreed. The NPP reps at the meeting opposed the EC’s position.”

Meawhile, the National Coordinator of the District Road Improvement Programme(DRIP), Nii Lante Vanderpuye, has accused the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of opposing the Electoral Commission’s decision to rerun parliamentary elections in parts of the Ablekuma North Constituency because they anticipate a likely defeat.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Thursday, July 3, he stated that the NPP’s resistance to the rerun is rooted in fear, despite their claims that Ablekuma North is one of their strongholds.

“The only reason the NPP has taken this position of rejecting the rerun in the 19 polling stations is because they foresee defeat. If the NPP claims these polling stations are their stronghold, then why are they afraid? Let’s grow up, sit down, and follow the EC’s directive. Whoever wins, wins.”

The conviction relate to charges brought against her in 2022 after several victims reported the matter to the police.

Kuami Eugene names favourite Ghanaian actors, bemoans lack of local films on streaming platforms

Ghanaian singer, songwriter, and producer Kuami Eugene has shared his favourite Ghanaian actors and actresses while expressing concern about the limited availability of local films on international streaming platforms.

Speaking in an interview with Kwame Dadzie and Doreen Avio on Hitz FM’s morning show, Daybreak Hitz, Kuami Eugene said, “I actually watch Ghanaian movies. It’s just that there isn’t much of it on Netflix or other streaming platforms. Most of them are in cinemas, and it’s quite difficult for me to go to cinemas. But I love Ghanaian movies.”

The Monica hitmaker named legendary actors Agya Koo, Santo, Lilwin, Kwaku Manu, Dr Likee, and Akrobeto as his favourite male actors. Among female actors, he mentioned Nana Ama McBrown and Vivian Jill Lawrence.

Kuami Eugene’s comments highlight a growing concern within Ghana’s film and entertainment industry. While local films enjoy strong followings in cinemas and on traditional television, their limited representation on global streaming services such as Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Showmax restricts their reach to wider audiences.

Many filmmakers and industry stakeholders have long called for better investment, marketing, and digital distribution strategies to improve access and visibility for Ghanaian films.

16,000 govt services to go digital on Ghana.gov – Sam George

0

Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, has announced that over 16,000 government services will soon be made accessible through an upgraded Ghana.Gov platform as part of efforts to modernise public service delivery and improve digital governance.

Speaking at a media briefing on Thursday, July 3, he disclosed that the Ghana.Gov platform is currently undergoing a comprehensive redesign spearheaded by the Ministry in collaboration with the National Information Technology Agency (NITA).

“The Ghana.Gov platform is undergoing comprehensive reengineering led by the Ministry and NITA to modernise citizen interaction with government. The redesigned site, which will launch after the public tender process, will feature significantly faster access, full Ghana Card integration, and an intuitive, streamlined interface tailored for both individuals and businesses.”

He added that once completed, the new platform will enhance transparency, convenience, and reliability in accessing public services, making it easier for citizens to interact with the government without physical barriers.

“We intend to put 16,000 government services on that platform,” Sam George stated, emphasising the administration’s commitment to digital transformation.

In a related development, the Minister assured Ghanaians that while digital systems are being strengthened, citizens’ freedoms remain protected. He reiterated the government’s commitment to upholding free speech even as it moves to combat the growing threat of misinformation online.

He revealed that the National Misinformation and Disinformation Bill is nearing completion and will be presented to Parliament in its upcoming session.

The legislation, he said, is designed to curb the deliberate spread of false information while safeguarding the fundamental right to free expression.

A joy ride on ‘Love on the Ropes’

0

WHEN the two-man cast play began at exactly 4pm at the National Theatre, no one in the packed theatre could have predicted the emotional rollercoaster they were about to ride.

Love on the Ropes, a riveting stage production by celebrated playwright Ebo Whyte, began as a comedic take on marriage, social media, and love in the digital age but ended as a raw, dramatic unraveling of secrets, betrayal and the reality that not all love stories are meant to last.

The story centres on Aisha Hammond Hamis, a flamboyant lifestyle influencer, and her husband Donatus Hammond Hamis aka The Don, a former boxer turned politician she jokingly calls ‘Microsoft’ for being soft.

On their 18th wedding anniversary, The Don’s publicly declares his love for his wife, a reminder of his enduring affection despite their rocky past.

The Don reveals that for 18 years, he’s visited his father-in-law’s house every morning with a megaphone to remind him that the daughter he once said he had “nothing good to offer her” is still loved. He even bought a house nearby to rub it in for his father-in-law.

Together, they recount the obstacles they faced: a father-in-law with fists of fury, an uncle who accepted a box of cigars for dowry, and a relationship that survived against the odds.

As a wedding anniversary gift, The Don offers her a blank cheque, but Aisha chooses a solo trip to Israel “to walk where Jesus walked.” Her return gift to her husband? She offers sex but must be done in their backyard and a live stream to talk abou their love story. The Don refuses.

Soon, the cracks in their union widen. When Don hints at a boxing comeback, Aisha panics, calling him “no Mike Tyson” and declaring she’s not ready to be a young widow. But when he mentions a $20 million payout win or lose, she flips and urges him to take on the challenge.

They stage a livestream in their garden to present their relationship as picture-perfect. But midway, The Don confesses he’s participating “under duress but Aisha quickly tries to salvage their image.

The tipping point comes with the mention of their late daughter, Fofie. Aisha urges The Don to confront his pain; he refuses, leading to a tense altercation. As he walks off during the livestream, Aisha breaks down dramatically, crying and using humorous viral phrases like “Awurade fa me hyɛ wamotuam sɛ deodorant.”

She later pretends the entire drama was staged, though it’s clearly not. Refusing to speak to The Don unless he confesses his darkest moment and streams it live, she declines a lunch invitation. The Don relents but insists it stay private. Aisha refuses again. That’s when The Don confronts her with knowledge of her affair with her ex, Jayden.

Aisha admits the affair but deflects, claiming it was to protect The Don during his political struggles. He shows her evidence. She claims it’s AI-generated before finally confessing. Then, in a cruel twist, she tells him Jayden is the love of her life and The Don is merely a sidepiece.

But things go from bad to worse when Aisha discovers Jayden is a scammer. He replaces her jewelry with fakes and blackmails her with intimate content. She goes to confront him with The Don’s gun( unknown to her is a toy gun) to find Jayden in a pool of blood.

For some reason, she believes she killed him and rushes home distraught, only to learn later Jayden is alive and The Don, anticipating her every move, set up surveillance and security.

Finally, The Don reveals he’s known of the affair for the past four years. She blames spiritual forces; he blames her choices. He files for divorce, gives her a settlement, and walks away singing KiDi’s Thunder Fire You, and then dances out of her life to Wendy Shay’s It’s Too Late.

Afia Schwarzeneggar swipe at some prominent pastors in Ghana Afia Schwarzeneggar swipe at some prominent pastors in Ghana

Popular Ghanaian media personality, Valentina Nana Agyeiwaa, popularly known as Afia Schwarzenegger, has taken a swipe at some prominent pastors in Ghana.

She has labelled these individuals as fake and unnecessarily involved in politics instead of genuinely preaching the word of God.

In a video shared online, Afia claimed that certain famous pastors in the country misuse their influence to do more harm than good.

According to her, these pastors do not properly preach the gospel but rather exploit their status for personal or political agendas.

However, she praised a few of them whom she described as true men of God.

She specifically mentioned Rev. OB, the head pastor of MOGPA Church, and Prophet Ogyaba as examples of religious leaders who focus solely on their spiritual duties.

Afia further commended the Muslim community, particularly Imams, stating that they are consistent in speaking the truth and do not deceive people.

She concluded her statement by advising pastors in Ghana to stay away from politics if they want to earn the respect of the public.

According to her, their primary duty should be preaching the word of God, not meddling in political affairs.

Leader of Heaven Way Church, Evangelist Patricia Asiedua, popularly known as Nana Agradaa, has called on her church members to pray for her following her 15-year prison sentence.

Her plea comes after an Accra Circuit Court, presided over by Justice Evelyn Amoah, convicted her on charges of charlatanic advertisement and defrauding by false pretences.

In a 45-second video, Agradaa is seen urging her followers to keep her in their prayers during this difficult time.

Watch the video below:

Background

Agradaa was arrested on Sunday, October 9, 2022, following a series of public complaints.

“The police have arrested Patricia Asiedua, alias Nana Agradaa, following allegations of a money-doubling scam levelled against her by some members of the public. The suspect is currently assisting with police investigations,” a statement from the Ghana Police Service read at the time.

The arrest followed an all-night church service held on October 7, 2022, during which Agradaa allegedly promised financial returns to attendees.

Several congregants later accused her of fraud, claiming they were asked to give her money with the assurance it would be doubled, but received nothing in return.

Many of the victims shared their experiences online, alleging that after collecting their money, Agradaa simply dismissed them from the premises without fulfilling her promise.

These reports led to public outcry and prompted police action.

Following her arrest, the police urged anyone who had been affected by the alleged scheme to report to the Accra Regional Police Command to assist with ongoing investigations.

Government releases $300 million for Eurobond payments Government releases $300 million for Eurobond payments

Eurobond holders are set to receive their coupon payments today, July 3, 2025, as the government releases $300 million for debt servicing.

According to reports, the cedi component of the debt has been handed over by the government to the Bank of Ghana to facilitate payments to bondholders.

The payments are being processed by the Bank of Ghana through its correspondent banks in Europe and the USA, targeting bondholders who participated in the debt restructuring exercise.

The government is making the payments from the Debt Service Accounts, which were established to support coupon payments due to Eurobond holders.

Another payment is expected to be made in August 2025.

In October 2024, the government resumed Eurobond debt servicing after reaching a debt restructuring agreement with bondholders.

Last year, the government released a total of $520 million to pay the bondholders, which included a $120 million consent fee for those who agreed to exchange their old bonds under specified conditions.

The government successfully secured almost 100% participation from Eurobond holders in the restructuring deal.

Ghana was compelled to restructure its Eurobond debts following a severe economic downturn in recent years, which rendered it unable to meet its debt obligations.

Ultimately, the government managed to restructure $13 billion in Eurobond debt, with repayment scheduled to fully commence in 2026.

Following the success of the inaugural edition, which attracted hundreds of footballers from across the sub-region, One World Sports Management Group, organizers of the West African Talent Hunt, have set their sights on expanding the tournament across the entire African continent.

The three-day tournament featured players from across the sub-region, representing sixteen teams as they showcased their talents and skills to a high-profile delegation of European scouts.

The scouting team, led by the world-renowned Innocent Okeke, the first Black individual to obtain a FIFA license to operate in Scandinavian countries, observed the matches with keen attention, aiming to identify, sign, and nurture the next big star from the West African sub-region.

Speaking to the media about the event’s success, Sammy Anim Addo, a member of One World Sports Management, expressed his profound excitement about the turnout and elaborated on the principles and objectives underpinning the competition.

Sammy Anim explained that One World Sports Management aims not only to discover talents and place them with clubs but also to ensure the holistic development of players, fostering them not just as footballers but as individuals with strong moral values and strong support systems.

He emphasized that One World Sports is pioneering a new chapter in talent management by focusing not only on footballing talent but also on other sporting disciplines.

The former Executive Council member of the Ghana Football Association noted that his organization seeks to bridge the gap between African sporting talents and the global stage by exposing them to world-class talent development and management practices.

Tanzanian PM to step down in surprise move

Kassim Majaliwa says he will remain a ruling party official Kassim Majaliwa says he will remain a ruling party official

Tanzania’s Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa has announced that he will not seek re-election in the forthcoming parliamentary elections, effectively preventing him from being re-appointed.

Majaliwa had earlier said that he would defend his legislative seat for a fourth time in October before making the surprise announcement on Wednesday.

The 64-year-old was appointed prime minister in 2015 and was seen as a possible successor of the late President John Magufuli after he died in 2021.

He has continued to hold the position under President Samia Suluhu Hassan, who is seeking to retain the presidency under the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM).

Majaliwa, who has represented the coastal Ruangwa region since 2010, said his decision was guided by God and he had made it “in good faith”.

“It is time to allow others to unite and build on the development foundation we’ve established,” said Majaliwa, without elaborating on his reasons to pull out from the elections.

It comes just a week after Majaliwa said that he would seek another term in parliament.

He also told Ruangwa residents last September that he would run again, with his unexpected withdrawal sparking speculation of a power struggle within the ruling party.

Majaliwa said he would continue serving as a senior CCM official and support Samia’s presidential bid.

In Tanzania, the prime minister leads the government business in parliament and is appointed by the president from among the elected MPs.

Seen as a quiet but firm leader, Majaliwa is credited with ensuring a smooth and calm political transition after Magufuli’s death.

The former teacher rose to become an influential figure within the CCM party, which has governed Tanzania since 1977. He served as a junior minister under former President Jakaya Kikwete.

His exit follows that of Vice-President Philip Mpango, who in May announced his retirement from politics.

Analysts say the withdrawal of the two senior politicians gives President Samia space to consolidate her control of CCM and craft her second-term leadership line-up.

Political analyst Nicodemus Minde told the BBC that the move might be part of a plan by Samia to ensure balance at the top of her government, if she wins the elections, because they are both Muslim in a country with a Christian majority.

“Something must have pushed him to change his mind about running again for the seat. He has served for 10 years as a prime minister, maybe he feels that is enough,” said another analyst, Ezekiel Kamwaga.

The country is due to vote in parliamentary and presidential elections, with CCM expected to retain power. The main opposition party, Chadema, has been banned for refusing to sign up to a code of ethics because it wants a series of electoral reforms.

Initially praised for easing the restrictions Magufuli had imposed on the opposition and the media, Samia has been criticised for what rights groups see as renewed repression. She took up power in 2021 after Magufuli’s death, becoming the country’s first female president.

Senior Chadema politicians have been arrested, and several opposition figures abducted and murdered.

On Thursday, the government dismissed reports of a plot to poison detained Chadema leader Tundu Lissu, who is facing treason charges in court.

It followed concerns raised by Chadema about Lissu’s safety while in police custody.

But in a statement, government spokesperson Gerson Msigwa said the Tanzanian authorities have “never had any plan to poison any individual in custody, nor do they have any intention of doing so to anyone”.

Msigwa warned that the government would take action against those involved in publishing and spreading the “false” information.

Samia’s government defends the crackdown on opposition as a move to ensure peace in the country.

June Inflation Drops To 13.7% – GSS

0

Alhassan Iddrisu (PhD

The Year-on-Year (Y-on-Y) inflation for June 2025 has dropped to 13.7%, a 4.7% decrease from the May 2025 inflation of 18.4%, the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) has said.

Also, the June 2025 Inflation is the sixth consecutive year-on-year drop in inflation; and the lowest year-on-year inflation since December 2021.

According to the latest Consumer Price Index (CPI) report released by the GSS, the decrease means that on the average, the price of goods and services increased by 13.7% between June 2024 and June 2025.

Also, on the month-on-month basis, there was deflation of 1.2% for June 2025 implying that the general price level fell by 1.2% between May and June 2025.

The downward inflationary trend over the last 6 months provides some consistency and assurance of a real sustained shift in prices, the GSS said.

It further noted that the disinflation process means some breathing room for households, a more predictable environment for businesses, and for policymakers, a powerful signal that recent fiscal and monetary efforts may be taking hold and the need stay the course.

According to the release, food and non-alcoholic beverages have remained the largest contributor to inflation, with a weight of 42.7%, despite a moderation in year-on-year inflation from 22.8% in May to 16.3% in June. Month-on-month, prices in this category saw a -0.5 percentage point change, contributing 0.9 percentage points to the national inflation figure.

The release also showed data on the top 20 individual contributors to inflation, with payment for rents topping the list. Rents saw an 86.0% inflation rate, up from 7.5% in May, contributing 2.3 percentage points to the overall inflation. Electricity prices increased by 139.3% year-on-year, contributing 1.2 percentage points. Refuse disposal services also jumped by 130.9%, adding 0.7 percentage points to inflation.

On a regional level, Greater Accra recorded the highest contribution to national inflation at 3.5 percentage points, despite a year-on-year inflation drop from 15.5% to 12.2%. Ashanti Region followed with a contribution of 3.3 percentage points, while Eastern Region contributed 1.3 percentage points.

The regions with the highest year-on-year inflation were: Upper West: 32.3%, Upper East: 18.9% and Bono: 13.8%

Regions like Bono East, Savannah, and Ahafo, however, saw inflation declines, reflecting regional variations in pricing and supply dynamics.

Ablekuma North: NPP rejects rerun of elections, heads to Court

0

By Edward Acquah

Accra, July 3, GNA- The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has rejected a decision by the Electoral Commission (EC) to rerun the election in 19 polling stations to resolve the impasse in the Ablekuma-North Constituency.

The Party has consequently directed its lawyers to file a case in court to injunct the Commission from carrying out the announced rerun scheduled for Friday, July 11, 2025.

Addressing a press conference in Accra on Thursday, Mr. Justin Kodua Frimpong, General Secretary, NPP, said the EC’s decision ran contrary to the Commission’s earlier position that it collated all but three polling station results for the Ablekuma-North Constituency.

He said per the party’s records, the three outstanding polling station results yet to be collated were: Pentecost Church Tweneboa 2, Light of Gospel Miracle Chaple, and Gloryland Hotel Polling Station.

Mr Frimpong described the EC’s latest roadmap as an “afterthought” and warned that the decision could “set a dangerous precedent in public elections and our democracy.”

He said per C.I. 127, which governed the 2024 General Election, the EC had no authority to order the rerun of an election unless directed by a Court of competent jurisdiction.

“There is absolutely no debate that there are only three polling stations yet to be collated. Even if we would accept a rerun, the rerun has to be in the three outstanding polling stations,” Mr Frimpong added.

Following a meeting with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, the Electoral Commission (EC) announced its decision to rerun elections in 19 polling stations within the Ablekuma-North Constituency to resolve the disputed results.

The EC explained that the 19 polling stations were selected because the scanned results sheets used during collation had not been verified by the Presiding Officers responsible for those stations.

Initially, the EC had collated results from all but three polling stations, but the NDC challenged the process, objecting to the use of scanned results sheets provided by the NPP.

These sheets were used after the EC’s originals were destroyed on the day of collation.

While the NDC called for a rerun in 37 polling stations, the NPP insisted that only the three outstanding polling station results should be collated to declare the winner.

According to Mr. Frimpong, the party’s carbon copy records from 281 polling stations indicate that their candidate won by a margin of 414 votes.

He said the Party would not accept anything other than the collation of the results in the three outstanding polling stations to settle on the winner and urged the EC to “be bold” and “live with principle and conviction” to uphold its integrity.

Per the list released by the EC on Wednesday, the 19 outstanding polling stations where the elections would be rerun are: God First International School (Darkuman 1); Pentecost Church Mount Zion Assembly (Kwashieman); DVLA Office- Awoshie Adamami 2, and Living Spring Day Nursery, Kwashie Bu 1.

The others are: The Lord’s Pentecostal Church Kwashie Bu; Presby Church Odorkor 4; Church of Pentecost North Odorkor 4, Methodist Church Odorkor 1, St. John Baptist Church Odorkor 1; Radiantway Preparatory School, and Ateco School Complex, Odorkor.

The rest are: South Odorkor 4 and 5 School, Odorkor 3; Pentecost Church, Tweneboa 2; Light of Gospel Miracle Chapel, Tweneboa 2; MTTD Odorkor Divisional Station, Odorkor 1; Roman Catholic Church, Busia Junction, Odorkor 1, and Bethel Baptist Church Sakaman 1.

Renowned spiritual figure Prophet Seer Gyan has made a bold prophecy regarding newly appointed Hearts of Oak head coach, Didi Dramani, predicting that he will not complete the 2025/26 season with the club.

Speaking on Lawson Sports, the prophet claimed that although Dramani will enjoy a strong start to the campaign, his performance will dip significantly midway and decline further towards the end of the season.

“Didi Dramani will not complete the season with Hearts of Oak. He will begin the season well but will decline midway and towards the end of the season,” Prophet Gyan declared.

The prophecy comes just days after Dramani assured fans of a long-term vision to instill a solid football philosophy, club culture, and youth integration plan at Hearts. While many supporters are optimistic about his appointment, the prophecy adds a layer of intrigue and pressure ahead of the new season.

Meanwhile, Hearts of Oak prepare to rebuild and challenge for titles under Dramani as they look to have a better season than the just ended campaign where they finished 4th and got eliminated in the quarterfinals of the FA Cup.

Outside Anfield, a growing number of Liverpool supporters are gathering in solemn silence to mourn Diogo Jota, who died alongside his brother André Silva in a car crash earlier today, July 3, 2025.

No chants, no speeches, just quiet respect. Fans have been laying wreaths and flowers at the foot of the Hillsborough Memorial, paying tribute to a player who wore the red shirt with heart and grit.

Among the tributes, Jota’s Liverpool jersey has been hoisted high on a pole, a simple, powerful gesture that speaks louder than any words.

Around it, handwritten cards and notes are tucked into bouquets of red and white flowers. Some read simply: “In loving memory, the lad from Portugal.”

Jota joined Liverpool in 2020 and quickly earned a place in the hearts of the Anfield faithful for his relentless pressing, big-game goals, and quiet dedication.

Today, that devotion is being returned in the form of this growing shrine, a reminder that, for Liverpool fans, their players are family.

Details on sentencing and further court directives are expected to follow.

However, in line with sentencing guidelines, Nana Agradaa has been taken to the hospital for a pregnancy test before the Judge will sentence her.

Ghana is a shining example of democracy and progress – Narendra Modi

Indian Prime Minister Modi commits to stronger ties with Ghana

0

Visiting Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi vows to strengthen relationships between Ghana and his country, announcing a line-up of partnership between the two countries.

The Indian leader made the remarks while addressing Ghana’s Parliament on the first day of his two-day visit to the West African nation.

Prime Minister Modi expressed admiration for Ghana’s political values and development journey, describing the country as a shining example on the African continent.

“Your commitment to democratic ideals and inclusive progress truly make Ghana a beacon of inspiration for the entire African continent,” he said.

Reaffirming his country’s commitment to Ghana, he said both governments had agreed to elevate their diplomatic and economic relations into a broader, long-term cooperation framework.

“Our relationship knows no bounds and with your permission, may I say, our friendship is sweeter than your famous sugarloaf pineapple,” he joked.

“With President Mahama, we have decided to elevate our ties to a comprehensive partnership. Friends, the world order created after the Second World War is changing fast.”

Throughout his speech, the Indian Prime Minister praised Ghana’s resilience and dignity in overcoming historical and present-day challenges.

“When we look at Ghana, we see a nation that shines with courage, that rises above history, that meets every challenge with dignity and grace,” he added.

Modi pushes further India-Africa cooperation on Ghana visit – World

0

ACCRA: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday outlined plans for deeper ties between his country and Africa, as New Delhi increasingly vies for a stronger economic presence on the continent along with China and Russia.

In a speech to Ghana’s parliament, Modi highlighted a major rail project that opened in the west African nation last year, financed by the India Export-Import Bank.

He also underlined his country’s expanding diplomatic development and business footprint in Africa.

“Over 200 projects across the continent enhance connectivity, infrastructure and Industrial capacity,” Modi said. On the political front he welcomed “the establishment of Ghana-India Parliamentary Friendship Society in your parliament”.

Modi’s visit is the first to Ghana by an Indian leader in three decades.

But India’s rival China remains the most important backer of infrastructure across the continent, a position only strengthened as the United States and other Western powers slash aid programmes.

In a meeting Wednesday, Modi and Ghanaian President John Mahama agreed to deepen security and mining ties.

In November 2024, the Indian prime minister visited Nigeria, discussing trade and security at a time when Indian companies had expressed interest in investing in Nigerian industries including steel.

The Indian prime minister also on Thursday called for a greater global diplomatic role for both his country and Africa, warning that “the world order created after the Second World War is changing fast”.

Global South’s voice

Modi noted that the African Union had been admitted as a permanent member to the G20 while India held the rotating presidency of the bloc.

Progress on worldwide challenges including climate change, diplomacy, “terrorism” and pandemics “cannot come without giving voice to the Global South”, he added.

India, Canada return ambassadors as Carney, Modi look past spat

India, the world’s most populous country and a nuclear-armed power, has close ties with Russia but is often in rivalry with China.

Resource-rich Ghana is Modi’s first stop in a tour that will take the Indian premier to four other countries in Africa, the Caribbean and South America.

The visit to Accra came as he made his way to Brazil for a summit of the BRICS group of emerging economies on Sunday and Monday.

Highlighting his own country’s economic development aspirations to become a “developed nation by 2047,” Modi said “India remains a committed partner in Africa’s development journey.”

India to reinforce parliamentary ties with Ghana

0

By Godwill Arthur-Mensah

Accra, July 3, GNA-Prime Minister of India Shri Narendra Modi has given the assurance that India will further reinforce parliamentary ties with Ghana to strengthen the democracies of the two countries.

He, thus, acknowledged the establishment of Ghana-India Parliamentary Friendship Society in Ghana’s Parliament.

“I invite you to visit the new Parliament of India. You will be able to see the bold steps we have taken to reserve one-third of seats in the Indian Parliament and state assemblies for women,” he said.

Prime Minister Modi made the remarks during an address on the floor of Ghana’s Parliament in Accra on Thursday.

He believed that the visit would enable Ghanaian parliamentarians to witness the debate and discussions that are the hallmark of the Indian democracy.

“I assure you they are as spirited and passionate as the game of your beloved black stars,” he stated.

He said parliamentary exercises were a cornerstone of the relationship between the two democracies and recalled the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association meeting held in Accra in 2023.

He recounted the largest Indian parliamentary delegation to Ghana, including state legislators in India, saying; “We deeply value such vibrant dialogue”.

Prime Minister Modi observed that free and fair elections were the soul of any democracy, therefore, it was “encouraging to see our electoral commissions working closely together”.

“I am confident that India’s Election Commission will be honoured to share its experience in conducting the world’s largest elections with full trust and transparency,” he added.

The Indian Prime Minister said India and Ghana shared a dream, “where every child gets opportunities, where every voice is heard and where nations rise together, not apart,” he noted.

He referenced a quote Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah made: “I am not African because I was born in Africa. But because Africa was born in me”.

In the same way, he said: “India carries Africa in its heart. Let us build a partnership, not only for today, but for generations to come,” he added.

The diplomatic relations between Ghana and India dates back to 1953 where India established a consulate in Accra.

The Indian Prime Minister’s visit defines Ghana-India relations, signalling a new chapter in strategic partnership, trade and south-south cooperation.

Nat’l misinformation and disinformation bill set to be laid before Parliament – Sam George

0

Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, has revealed that the long-anticipated National Misinformation and Disinformation Bill is ready to be presented before Parliament for review in its upcoming session.

Addressing the media on Thursday, July 3, he stated that the bill is a crucial step in safeguarding Ghana’s digital information ecosystem, particularly in an age where falsehoods and harmful online content threaten public trust, national security, and democratic engagement.

“To protect the integrity of Ghana’s digital information space, the Ministry is making steady progress toward bringing the National Misinformation and Disinformation Bill before Parliament,” he said.

He explained that the draft legislation seeks to establish a clear legal framework that empowers statutory bodies to respond effectively to the deliberate creation and spread of false information, without infringing on citizens’ right to free speech.

“This legislation is designed to strengthen legal safeguards against the intentional spread of false or harmful digital content. It will provide enforcement clarity while upholding freedom of expression,” he added.

Sam George emphasised that the bill reflects the Ministry’s commitment to promoting accountable digital communication, fostering trustworthy public discourse, and advancing digital literacy. He assured the public that free expression would not be curtailed, but must be exercised responsibly.

“We will not clamp down on freedom of expression, which will be respected. However, when your right to free expression ends, your duty not to misinform begins,” he stressed.

An old video of Black Sherif at the University of Professional Studies, (UPSA) has resurfaced amid recent viral videos showing students being sent home for what has been described as indecent dressing.

The video, shared on X on July 3, 2025, shows a UPSA official dressed in an all-black suit and wearing a face mask, questioning Black Sherif about his earrings.

The man, believed to be a lecturer at UPSA, challenged the “Soma Obi” hitmaker on his style, telling him that his attire was inappropriate for the university setting.

“He is a superstar from where? What does he do? Is he Sarkodie’s friend? But Sarkodie doesn’t wear earrings. We don’t allow it here, so go and read, we have a dress code. Are you aware of that?” the lecturer asked.

The lecturer then urged Black Sherif to familiarize himself with the school’s dress code to avoid further issues.

The old video has sparked reactions on social media, with some netizens speculating that this incident may have influenced Black Sherif’s decision to enroll at the University of Ghana instead.

One X user commented, “Your man lef go legain,” while another pointed out, “Bro, the lecturer said Sarkodie doesn’t wear earrings.”
