Torrential rains flood Frankadua- homes and farmlands destroyed

The downpour, which began late Saturday caused the Alabo River to overflow its banks The downpour, which began late Saturday caused the Alabo River to overflow its banks

Heavy rains have left a trail of devastation in Frankadua, a community in the Asuogyaman District of the Eastern Region.

The downpour, which began late Saturday and lasted into Sunday (June 14–15), caused the Alabo River to overflow its banks, submerging parts of the community.

At least 16 houses have been flooded, farmlands washed away, and properties destroyed, forcing several families to seek refuge with neighbours or in temporary shelters.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency, Simon Babah, Assembly Member for the Frankadua Electoral Area, described the situation as dire.

“This is unlike anything we’ve seen in recent years,” he said.

“Entire homes are underwater. People have lost not just shelter but also their means of livelihood.”

Residents are calling for urgent support from both the local assembly and disaster response agencies to mitigate the aftermath and prevent future occurrences.

“The Alabo River broke its boundaries and flooded our homes, destroying properties and displacing residents,” Mr Babah added.

He expressed concern over the condition of several submerged buildings, warning that “some structures are on the brink of collapse,” and urged authorities to prioritise regular dredging of the Alabo River to avert future flooding.

He noted that the last time such a flood occurred was 40 years ago. “I believe if the river is dredged regularly, this kind of disaster can be avoided,” he added.

Following the incident, Godwin Bobobee, the District Chief Executive for Asuogyaman, visited the affected areas to assess the extent of the damage.

He expressed deep concern over the impact of the flood and immediately contacted the Member of Parliament (MP) for the constituency, Thomas Ampem Nyarko, to inform him about the situation.

In a swift response to the disaster, Teddy Safori Addi, Director General of Operations at the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), mobilised emergency relief supplies, including buckets, mattresses, blankets, and toiletries, for families affected by the floods.

He announced that temporary shelter was being arranged at the Baptist Primary School to accommodate the displaced.

The MP for Asuogyaman, who is also Deputy Minister of Finance, donated GHC32,000 to support recovery efforts. Each of the 16 affected households is expected to receive GHC2,000 from the fund.

Authorities have assured residents that further assessments will be conducted to determine any additional support needed.

The visit by the officials brought a sense of hope and comfort to the affected families, reaffirming that they are not alone in this difficult time.

NEON Alison Brie and Dave Franco in ‘Together’

Michael Shanks, the director behind the Alison Brie and Dave Franco-led horror film Together, is speaking out against the copyright infringement lawsuit filed over the film last month.

The movie, the first feature from Shanks, stars Brie and Franco as Millie and Tim, a fictional married couple who are drifting apart. But as the story progresses, they become closer than ever in a literal, physical sense. The film, in theaters July 30, sold for a reported $17 million after a bidding war at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.

However, in a suit filed on May 13, producers Jess Jacklin and Charles Beale claimed that Together is a “blatant rip-off” of their 2023 independent film, Better Half, stealing several plot and thematic elements, including the central concept of a couple who “wake up to find their bodies physically fused together as a metaphor for codependency.”

Although Better Half was written and directed by Patrick Henry Phelan, Jacklin and Beale’s production company, StudioFest, is the only plaintiff named in the suit.

“My client’s original work was stolen,” Jacklin and Beale’s lawyer Dan Miller alleged in a statement to EW last month. “The similarities between the two works are staggering and defy any innocent explanation. We intend to hold the defendants accountable, and look forward to trial.”

In a statement to Entertainment Weekly on Wednesday, Shanks called the allegations “entirely untrue,” and argued that Together is not just a script but “a reflection of something deeply personal.”

“I’ve been with my partner for over 16 years– almost half my life. That entanglement of identity, love, and co-dependence is what inspired Together,” Shanks said. “It’s not just a script; it’s a reflection of something deeply personal. Tim’s story, his love for Millie, his relationship to his family, his relationship to unfulfilled ambitions as a musician, is completely rooted in my own personal life. I lost my father at a young age in the same way our main character does, his trauma is rooted in my own. To have this called into question is not only deeply upsetting but entirely untrue.”

He went on, “I wish I didn’t have to clarify this, but I completed the first draft in 2019 and registered it to the Writer’s Guild of America that same year. In October 2020, I received development funding from Screen Australia to further the project. In 2022, my agent at WME introduced me to Dave Franco. From our very first meeting, we bonded over our love of horror, and I pitched him Together — a script I had been trying to get into production for years, with no luck. Soon after, he and Alison Brie came onboard to act in and produce the film.”

“To now be accused of stealing this story — one so deeply based on my own lived experience, one I’ve developed over the course of several years — is devastating and has taken a heavy toll,” Shanks added. “The suggestion not only undermines the work but also attempts to erase the emotional and professional journey I’ve taken to bring it to life. But more importantly: the facts matter. The timeline is documented. The drafts, submissions, and correspondence are all there.”

The director concluded his statement by saying, “I stand by Together, its origins, and the years of work it took to make it real. To make this independent film was an absolute dream come true that required years of hard work and no shortage of luck. It’s been the most insane whirlwind of good fortune to have collaborated with so many amazing artists to make this film a reality and I’m so excited to share it with the world later this year.”

Shanks’ statement comes after a May 21 letter to the plaintiffs’ lawyers, obtained by Variety. In the letter, attorney Nicolas Jampol urged the plaintiffs to drop the lawsuit, warning that if they pursue it further the defendants will seek compensation for their attorneys’ fees.

“Accusing people of copyright infringement — especially ones who have dedicated their lives to creating original works and performances — should not be done lightly,” Jampol wrote. “This is particularly true when the works are as obviously dissimilar as these.

A statement made on behalf of NEON, WME, Brie, Franco, and the director, was also sent to EW on Wednesday.

“The plaintiff is doing nothing more than drumming up fifteen minutes of fame for a failed project, demonstrated by the fact they contacted the press before filing their lawsuit, and did so without doing the most basic due diligence,” the statement reads. “There was zero outreach to the defendants to determine whether or not the Together script predated the plaintiff’s script, which it does.”

Noting that Shanks registered the initial version of Together‘s script with the WGA in 2019, almost a whole year before the plaintiff sent its script to WME, the response adds that “Almost all of the alleged similarities were in Shanks’ original 2019 script, much of it inspired by his own life and relationship with his longtime girlfriend.”

“The plaintiff doesn’t care about the facts, they only care about making waves in the press right before a film’s release in order to get a payday. We look forward to presenting our case in court,” the statement concludes.

Better Half ‘s synopsis describes the film as “a surreal, satirical comedy about a man and a woman who have a one-night stand and wake up to see that they have become literally and physically attached — an attachment that seems to be progressing toward total connection/immersion unless they figure out how to reverse it.”

The suit claimed that Brie and Franco were pitched Better Half in 2020 but that they and their agents at William Morris Endeavor turned it down. In emails reviewed by EW, the casting director sent a script and synopsis to Franco and Brie’s agents at WME in August 2020.

After clarifying whether the note was an offer for the couple to star in the movie together, Franco’s agent responded, “Dave is going to pass, but thank you for thinking of him.”

The lawsuit alleged that the defendants rejected the initial offer “because they wanted to produce the film themselves and have WME package the project with one of the agency’s own writers.” It highlights several alleged similarities between the two films.

“This lawsuit is frivolous and without merit,” a WME spokesperson told EW at the time in response to the allegations. “The facts in this case are clear, and we plan to vigorously defend ourselves.”

Sanction Kennedy Agyapong for his comments against Bawumia – NPP told

0

The Upper East Regional Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Peter Ayinbisa, has called for disciplinary action against Kennedy Agyapong, a former flagbearer aspirant of the party, for what he describes as open defiance of party rules.

Ayinbisa’s call comes in response to recent comments made by Agyapong in viral videos, where he criticised the NPP’s 2024 flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, and questioned the rationale behind giving him a second chance in future elections.

A simple yet chic tracksuit set has become a must-have for travellers – and it’s so popular that one of the colours sold out in just five minutes.

Australian fashion-forward brand All For Mimi has been struggling to keep up with demand since releasing its viral hoodies and track pants in early May.

The set features buttery-soft fabric, perfect for anyone looking to elevate their airport loungewear while travelling in comfort – or avoid the stress of choosing an outfit for an early morning flight.

All For Mimi founder Sophia Begg designed the track sets herself, with the range offering three ‘dreamy’ colours: Midnight, Chill and Scarlett.

On the night of the launch on May 2, Midnight proved to be a fan favourite colour, selling out in just minutes.

‘It’s such a crazy feeling,’ Sophia told FEMAIL.

‘Working so hard on a product and seeing the customers and community love it and feel confident in our pieces is an unexplainable feeling.’

The track set, featuring a zip jacket ($109), hoodie ($99) and track pants ($89), has been a huge hit among shoppers, with many calling it ‘the best airport fit to exist’.

‘Obsessed is an understatement,’ one said.

‘Total vibes, love it,’ another shared.

The 21-year-old, who hails from NSW, is a full time content creator with more than two million followers across her social media platforms.

She was inspired to create her clothing brand All For Mimi, as a sweet nod to her great-great-grandmother Mimi, who was a fashion designer herself.

‘I was not fortunate enough to meet her, but with every story, I grew more and more connected to her,’ Sophia said.

‘Her love for glamorous fashion, coupled with her refusing to accept the status quo, has stayed with me as I’ve grown into the woman I am with a desire to follow in her footsteps. I wanted to dedicate my brand to Mimi in her honour, and I hope to carry on her legacy in my work.’

The fashion entrepreneur put blood, sweet and tears into designing her own range of clothes – a lengthy process that took over three years before she finally launched the business in October 2023.

‘All For Mimi is known for its quality pieces and inclusivity in the size range and styles to cater for every body,’ she said.

‘We put every bit of love and care into designing our pieces and do not sell something unless it is of the highest quality and comfort.

‘We have received so many shipments that have been messed up during production and had to forfeit stock because we refuse to sell anything that we don’t 100 per cent stand by and love.

‘We are so proud of every piece we sell.’

The brand’s sell-out piece is the ‘life changing’ tank top, which has been flying off the shelves since its launch.

‘Our viral tank is obviously iconic and probably my most worn AFM piece,’ she said.

‘It’s the top we cannot keep in stock – it goes absolutely wild. It’s the softest material ever, yet is so flattering, and gives an instant boob lift.’

Fans of the top has been raving about it, with one saying: ‘Every big busted girls dream tank.. I’m a 12F I brought black and white, both sizes S and M and when I tell you they literally are life changing I mean it, snatched tick… girls supported tick.

‘This fabric is unmatched so buttery and soft I can’t wait to buy more – definitely will be getting smalls for other colours in future for a more snatched look.’

Another fan favourite piece is the Harper jacket.

‘Our jacket in red sold out within one minute and we’ve restocked twice. We still have people asking to this day, a year later, if we’ll bring it back in stock,’ Sophia said.

But if Sophia had to choose just one piece from her collection, the business owner said the pyjamas are her all-time favourite.

‘They’re the comfiest PJs I’ve ever worn and I live in them,’ she said.

All For Mimi has been growing rapidly, amassing nearly 200,000 loyal fans across its social media platforms.

‘We’re constantly designing new collections and pieces which is so fun,’ Sophia said.

‘We are rapidly growing our team which is super exciting and we are actually moving out of our first ever office, which is bittersweet.’

Ato Forson’s Economic Turnaround Fuels Presidential Speculation

0

Dr Cassiel Ato Forson
Dr Cassiel Ato Forson

Ghana’s Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Baah Forson is emerging as a potential presidential contender following his aggressive economic stabilization measures that have begun yielding tangible results.

Since taking office in January 2025, the Oxford-trained economist has implemented what analysts describe as “shock therapy” for Ghana’s battered economy – combining fiscal discipline with strategic relief measures that have slowed inflation, strengthened the cedi, and rebuilt foreign reserves.

Key to Forson’s growing political capital has been his transparent approach to governance. He has live-streamed procurement meetings, fast-tracked right-to-information requests, and maintained candid communication about Ghana’s economic challenges. This contrasts sharply with previous administrations, earning him credibility even as he implements tough reforms.

The minister’s technical background – including four parliamentary terms on the Finance Committee and two years as Minority Leader – has enabled him to navigate complex debt restructuring negotiations. His $8.7 billion external debt plan recently secured IMF approval, while domestic measures like abolishing the e-levy and increasing mining sector taxes have balanced public relief with revenue generation.

Economic indicators show marked improvement under his watch. Inflation has dropped from 54% to 21.2% since December 2024, while the cedi has appreciated 42% against the dollar. These gains are translating to reduced transport costs and lower import prices, making the recovery palpable for ordinary Ghanaians.

Political observers note parallels with Kenya’s Mwai Kibaki, who leveraged his reputation as a competent finance minister to win the presidency. Forson’s non-tribal appeal and middle-class support base could prove decisive in any future leadership contest. However, risks remain – including potential debt restructuring fatigue and unresolved questions about his involvement in a decade-old ambulance procurement case.

With Ghana’s 2026 mid-term elections approaching as a key test, Forson’s ability to maintain economic stability while delivering visible public service improvements could determine whether his technocratic success transforms into presidential ambition.

Asante Kotoko in advanced talks to sign highly rated Gold Stars midfielder

0

Asante Kotoko are closing in on the signing of Charles Gyamfi Kamara, the highly-rated attacking midfielder from Bibiani Gold Stars, as negotiations between the two clubs reach an advanced stage.

The Porcupine Warriors have identified Kamara as a key target in their squad rebuild ahead of the 2025/26 Ghana Premier League season.

Known for his vision, creativity, and ability to unlock defences, the 24-year-old has been a standout performer for Gold Stars over the past two seasons.

Sources close to the deal indicate that discussions over personal terms and a transfer fee are progressing well, with both clubs optimistic that an agreement will be finalized in the coming days. While the move is not yet complete, all signs point to Kamara donning the famous red jersey soon.

Kamara would become one of Kotoko’s marquee signings of the transfer window, as the club looks to bounce back stronger next season following an inconsistent 2024/25 campaign.

Justin Kodua attributes NPP’s 2024 loss to global wave against incumbents

0

The NPP General Secretary has argued that the party’s loss in the 2024 general elections was part of a broader global trend that saw incumbent governments being voted out due to economic pressures and shifting political dynamics.

According to Justin Frimpong Kodua, the NPP’s defeat should not be viewed in isolation but rather in the context of international patterns of voter behaviour.

Speaking on Channel One TV on Wednesday, 18 June, Mr Kodua explained that while the NPP was conducting an internal review of its electoral performance, it was important for Ghanaians to recognise the broader forces at play.

“Certainly, the election in 2024 is something that, if we are to do retrospection, there were several factors that caused our defeat. It is not only restricted to governance,” he said.

He cited waning enthusiasm among the party’s base as a key domestic factor.

“Apathy also set in within the party, and then there’s the normal political cycle, many Ghanaians feel that after eight years in power, there should be a change in government,” he stated.

Mr Kodua further noted that this cyclical expectation contributed to the desire for political change at the ballot box.

Beyond Ghana’s borders, he pointed to global events that had negatively affected economies and, by extension, incumbent popularity.

“Do you know that as many as 60 countries’ incumbent governments lost the elections? What happened to us was part of a trend happening across the globe,” he asserted.

He referenced the economic aftershocks of the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war as having severely strained national economies, including Ghana’s.

If you want to find a way to stop this vetting, stop what you are doing — Afenyo-Markin slam Ahiafor

0

During the vetting session for seven nominees to the Supreme Court, tensions flared once again between Bernard Ahiafor, Chairman of the Appointments Committee of Parliament, and Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, the Ranking Member of the Committee.

According to GhanaWeb, the disagreement took place on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, during the appearance of Justice Hafisata Amaleboba before the committee.

The two lawmakers have been involved in multiple confrontations since the vetting process began on Monday, June 16.

The latest dispute began when Ahiafor interrupted Afenyo-Markin’s questioning, claiming the Minority Leader was reiterating a query the nominee had already responded to.

Ahiafor insisted that the line of questioning had already been addressed and suggested moving on to a new topic.

This sparked a strong reaction from Afenyo-Markin, who expressed frustration at what he saw as an effort to obstruct the vetting process.

He warned that the chairman’s actions were being observed nationally and implied that such conduct could damage the integrity of the committee’s work in the long run.

He further suggested that if the intention was to prevent a thorough vetting, the nominee should simply be released from the process.

“Chairman, if you want to find a way to stop this vetting, I will urge you; stop what you are doing. The whole country is watching you. Stop what you are doing. Stop what you are doing. If you want us to fold up, I’m not here to debate with you. I’ll fold. Discharge her. Let us go. If that’s what you want to achieve. I’ve seen it all,” he stated.

He emphasized that his questions were within the scope of the proceedings and cautioned against setting a precedent that could undermine the committee’s future credibility.

Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum declares intent to contest NPP Flagbearer slot

0

The Member of Parliament for Bosomtwe and former Education Minister, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, has formally declared his intention to contest for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential candidacy ahead of the 2028 general elections.

In a Facebook post on Wednesday, June 18, Dr Adutwum announced his resolve to join the race once nominations are officially opened by the party.

“With humility, conviction, and a resolute heart, I, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, declare my intent to run for the flagbearership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), should nominations be officially opened by the party,” he stated.

Dr Adutwum becomes one of the prominent figures to publicly declare interest in the party’s top leadership role, joining an emerging list of contenders which includes Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, businessman and Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, and Minister for Agriculture Bryan Acheampong, among others.

His announcement comes a day after the NPP formally scheduled January 31, 2026, as the date for its presidential primaries to elect a flagbearer for the 2028 elections. The decision was confirmed following a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held on Tuesday, June 17, and later endorsed by the National Council of the party.

Thr General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua explained that the decision to hold the primaries on that date does not require a constitutional amendment or approval by the national delegates conference, as it falls within the Council’s mandate.

“The date for our presidential primaries is set for January 31, 2026. That will be the date that we shall hold our presidential primaries,” Mr Kodua stated.

Dr Adutwum, a respected educationist and reform advocate, is widely credited for several policy shifts in the education sector during his tenure, including reforms to the Free SHS programme and the promotion of STEM education. He is seen by his supporters as a candidate who combines technocratic competence with political experience.

LatexFoamPromo

In his declaration, Dr Adutwum appealed to the grassroots of the NPP and urged unity as the party prepares for what could be a keenly contested leadership race.

Meanwhile, a nine-member committee chaired by former Bekwai MP Joseph Osei Owusu has been tasked to plan the NPP’s National Delegates Conference in July 2025. The conference will review and adopt constitutional amendments ahead of the primaries.

As the 2028 electoral cycle edges closer, the January primaries are expected to be a defining moment in determining the future leadership of the NPP and its chances of returning to power.

Profile

Born on April 9, 1964, at Jachie in the Ashanti Region, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum holds a PhD in Educational Policy, Planning and Administration from the University of Southern California. He also holds master’s and postgraduate degrees in education and teaching from universities in California, and a bachelor’s degree in Land Economy from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST). He is married with four children and serves as a member of several international advisory boards in education.

‘I have dined with the devil before’

0

Mustapha Gbande, Deputy Director of Operations at the Presidency Mustapha Gbande, Deputy Director of Operations at the Presidency

Deputy Director of Operations at the Presidency, Mustapha Gbande, has revealed that he once had a relationship with the devil.

In an interview with Joy Prime on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, the outspoken politician distinguished between what he described as “Sunday school Christians” and believers who have endured real-life spiritual battles.

“Much as I am a good Christian, I am not a Sunday school Christian. There is a difference. You may be a Sunday school Christian because you have never encountered the devil. I have seen and dined with the devil before. Of course, I have done things in my life,” he said.

When the host pressed him to elaborate on what he meant by “eating with the devil,” Gbande explained that his words reflected past experiences that have deepened his appreciation for salvation.

“I just said that Sunday school Christians take Jesus Christ and God for granted. But those of us who have dined with the devil understand what it takes to receive salvation. And when you are a true Christian or Muslim, you know what that means. Christians often take God for granted.”

Gbande’s remarks appear to be a critique of what he perceives as shallow religious commitment, contrasting it with the profound gratitude and reverence felt by those who have endured spiritual and moral adversity.

His comments seem intended to highlight the seriousness of faith and the importance of not taking God’s grace lightly.

408 prisons officers pass out

0

The government has reaffirmed its commitment to ensure the completion of the abandoned Nsawam Remand Prison project as part of the ongoing efforts to decongest Ghana’s overcrowded correctional facilities.

The announcement was made during a passing-out parade for Recruit Course 125 at the Prisons Officers Training School (POTS) in Accra yesterday.

In all, 408 newly trained officers comprising 220 males and 188 females duly passed out and were duly inducted into the Ghana Prisons Service.

In a speech delivered on his behalf by the Deputy Minister for the Interior, Mr Ebenezer Okletey Terlabi, at the ceremony, Alhaji Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka said the government would resume work on the Nsawam facility, which has remained dormant for more than eight years.

“We are committed to completing this vital project to improve inmate accommodation and reduce congestion in our prisons. Our vision is to transform correctional facilities into humane, modern institutions focused not only on custody but also on rehabilitation and reintegration,” he stated.

Mr Terlabi highlighted the urgent need for reforms, noting that Ghana’s prisons remain dangerously overcrowded, posing serious risks to both inmates and officers.

He said the completion of the remand facility, along with the construction of a new, state-of-the-art prison complex, were key components of the government’s strategy to address the crisis.

Alhaji Muntaka further outlined the government’s broader prison reform agenda, which includes raising the Prisoners’ Daily Feeding Rate to GH¢5, issuing health insurance cards to inmates, expanding vocational and agricultural training programmes, and incorporating prison labour into national sanitation efforts.

“This is not an act of charity, it is a strategic investment in national security and human capital,” he emphasised.

The Minister reminded the new officers of their critical role in supporting rehabilitation efforts.

“You are no longer just individuals; you are now officers of a noble institution. Serve with integrity, fairness, and compassion,” Alhaji Muntaka urged.

The ceremony also celebrated exceptional recruits for their outstanding performance during training. Female Recruit Officer (FRO) 23, Hlormenu Rebecca Mawusi was named Overall Best Recruit, while Recruit Officer (RO) .140, Boakye Paul received the award for Best in Physical Training. RO.58, Blandy Bright Azaa Sumah earned the Commandant’s Award, RO.10, Yamoah Frederick was recognized as Best in Drill, and RO. Essel Joseph was honoured as Overall Best Recruit (Academics).

The programme was in attendance by the Director-General of the Ghana Prisons Service Mrs Patience Baffoe-Bonnie, Senior and Junior officers from the Ghana Prisons Service, Academia, and families of the newly recruits.

‘No-bra, no-exam’ rule at Nigerian university sparks outrage

0

A university in Nigeria has sparked outrage after a video went viral showing female students being touched to see if they were wearing bras before taking part in an exam.

In the footage, female staff at Olabisi Onabanjo University in south-western Ogun State are seen touching some students’ chests as they queue to enter an examination hall.

The university has not yet commented on the video, but a student leader defended the bra policy as being part of the institution’s dress code aimed at maintaining “a distraction-free environment”.

However, he acknowledged that other ways were needed to enforce the policy that has been condemned by critics as archaic, sexist and likened to sexual assault.

A senior official at campaign group Human Rights Network told the BBC that students could sue the university for violating their rights.

“Unwarranted touches on another person’s body are a violation and could lead to legal action. The university is wrong to adopt this method to curb indecent dressing,” Haruna Ayagi said.

A student who did not want to be named told the BBC that the university enforced a strict moral code despite not being a religious institution.

She said their clothes were always being checked.

In response to the outcry, the president of the university’s students’ union, Muizz Olatunji, said on X that the university promoted “a dress-code policy aimed at maintaining a respectful and distraction-free environment, encouraging students to dress modestly and in line with the institution’s values”.

He added that the policy was not new, and the union had “engaged with the institution to explore alternative approaches to addressing indecent dressing, focusing on respectful and dignified interactions between students and staff”.

He also published the dress code, which included a ban on any clothes “capable of making the same or opposite sex to lust after the student in an indecent manner”.

The university was founded in 1982 as Ogun State University when Olabisi Onabanjo was the state governor. It was renamed after him in 2001.

‘It’s not about what favours him’ – Bawumia camp downplays claims of advantage in NPP primary

0

Former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia Former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia

The Director of Communications for Dr Mahamudu Bawumia 2024 campaign,

Dennis Miracles Aboagye has rejected claims that the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) decision to hold its presidential primary on January 31, 2026, was intended to give the former Vice President an unfair advantage.

Speaking on Joy FM on June 18, 2025, Dennis Miracles Aboagye dismissed the suggestions, insisting that Dr Bawumia is prepared for the internal contest regardless of the date selected.

“Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has been through this process multiple times. For him, it’s not a question of what favours or works against him,” myjoyonline.com quoted Aboagye to have said.

“What matters is that the date has been set, the rules will be laid out, and the internal debates can begin.”

He emphasised that Dr Bawumia remains focused on engaging party delegates with his message of forward-thinking leadership and is not concerned about when the primary take place.

The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the NPP officially announced Saturday, January 31, 2026, as the date for the presidential primary during a key meeting held on Tuesday, June 17, 2025.

The decision, communicated by the party’s General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua, paves the way for the selection of a new flagbearer to lead the party into the 2028 general elections.

Aboagye defended the NEC’s authority, noting that the party’s constitution grants it the power to set internal election timelines.

“As of now, I’m not aware of any decision that tilts the process in favour of one aspirant over another,” he stated.

“All aspirants, including Dr Bawumia, have an equal number of days to present their case to party delegates.”

He further argued that the focus should be on the vision and leadership qualities of the aspirants, not the date of the primary.

“The goal is not just to lead the NPP into 2028 but to provide bold leadership for Ghana as a whole.”

Bottled trust: Why Nigeria lags behind Ghana on traceability

0

Sibling nations, diverging paths

When Nigeria’s Super Eagles scored a goal against the Black Stars of Ghana during the semi-finals of the Unity Cup on May 28, 2025, at London’s Brentford Community Stadium, something unexpected happened. The Ghanaian DJ on duty cheekily blasted a popular Nigerian Afrobeats anthem.

The crowd erupted, some in laughter, others in utter amazement. One might argue the Ghanaian DJ should have known better than to celebrate with Nigerians against his home team. However, it was a light-hearted moment that reminded us of something deeper: these two West African nations share more than just geographical proximity. They share history, rivalry, and cultural influence. Yet, when it comes to consumer protection, product authentication, and traceability, they appear to be playing very different games. Whilst Ghana pushes ahead with digital compliance for public safety, Nigeria still struggles with faded or illegible labels, unverifiable NAFDAC numbers, and persistent risks of counterfeit products even on everyday products like sachet and bottled water.

Excise duty and digital safety: Ghana’s strategic use of QR codes

In Ghana, excise tax stamps are mandated on bottled water, alcoholic beverages and carbonated drinks. These stamps aren’t just tax tags; they’re QR-coded digital tools embedded directly onto the product, often on the bottle cap. A quick scan tells consumers the product’s origin, regulatory clearance and tax compliance..

Nigeria, in contrast, exempts bottled water from excise tax, creating a regulatory blind spot. While excise is now applied to carbonated drinks under the Finance Act 2021, bottled water remains outside the fiscal net, even as its safety & quality authentication remains challenging.

Dangerous waters: Why the issue is urgent

Sachet water, widely consumed in Nigeria, has long been linked to public health risks. According to THISDAY, unsafe sachet water has been cited in outbreaks of illnesses like cholera, dysentery, diarrhoea, and typhoid in Port Harcourt and beyond. In fact, studies confirm sources of harmful bacteria in sachets from commercial vendors in metropolitan Port Harcourt. These findings are backed by the shutdown of three unregistered sachet‑water factories in Port Harcourt due to hygiene violations by NAFDAC in mid-2024. Nonetheless, many consumers still rely on sachets often without means to verify safety, due to faint or fake NAFDAC numbers and an absentee QR code verification system that provides immediate feedback before a buying decision.

According to the World Health Organisation, safe and sufficient water facilitates the practice of hygiene, which is a key measure to prevent not only diarrhoeal diseases but also acute respiratory infections and numerous neglected tropical diseases.

In Ghana, supermarkets and neighbourhood stores reject products that lack QR labels. In Nigeria, lax quality & safety control measures mean counterfeit products can flow freely in clubs, supermarkets and street corners undetected and pose serious public health risks.

A wider crisis: Fake alcohol, risky cosmetics

NAFADC has occasionally raided markets and destroyed seized fake alcoholic beverages and carbonated drinks based on tip off, but the problem has persisted regardless. Some consumers now resort to drinking only water at public events, occasions, clubs, etc., for fear of injuring their health, and even the water too may not be safe!

It doesn’t stop at drinks. Imported beauty care products, creams, lotions, and and perfumes flood Nigerian

markets, often bearing vague inscriptions like “Produced and Marketed for” with no traceable address or QR data in violation of international product transparency standards,, which puts public health at risk.

What Nigeria needs: A unified digital window

Following the launch of the Single Window in 2024 and the planned phased implementation of the project, there is no better time to mirror or consider what Ghana has achieved in trying to stamp out counterfeited consumer goods by digitally verifying all consumable goods through QR codes. This practice will enhance consumer safety and public health, reduce counterfeit products in the market and supportAfCFTA implementation by improving cross-border product verification, trust, and regional trade compliance.

Countries like Ghana have already laid the groundwork. Global brands like Starbucks go even further, allowing customers to scan a QR code on their coffee cup and trace the product back to a cooperative in Ethiopia, with added assurance of fair-trade certifications, ethical sourcing, and quality control data. It’s not just about where the coffee came from; it’s about how it was grown, who grew it, and whether it passed global quality standards. If a cup of coffee in Seattle can be traced to Sidama or Yirgacheffe with verified quality markers, then a bottle of table water in Abuja should be traceable to a licensed bottling plant in Lagos complete with NAFDAC clearance, water treatment certification, and production batch testing and authentication.

This dual function: traceability and product quality authentication, is what’s missing from Nigeria’s current system. We don’t just need to know where a product came from; we need to be sure it’s safe, legal, and of acceptable quality. Without both, counterfeiters will continue to thrive, and trust in the market will remain dangerously low.

If you’re bold enough to insult, show your face

0

Ghanaian media personality MzGee Ghanaian media personality MzGee

Ghanaian media personality MzGee has taken a strong swipe at social media users who hide behind anonymous or ghost accounts to spew insults and negativity online.

Speaking during a passionate monologue on her Gee O’clock show, the broadcaster questioned the courage of trolls who lack the guts to confront people with their real identities.

“If you’re bold enough to go and insult people, come with your real face. Let’s see who we’re dealing with,” she stated. “Why do you go and create ghost accounts to talk trash? Me—who am I in the scheme of affairs—that you’d create a whole ghost account just to come and insult me?”

MzGee described the trend as both cowardly and toxic, highlighting how these faceless accounts often embolden others to join in online harassment.

She noted that many of these accounts bear fake names, untraceable handles, or cartoonish avatars—making it impossible to engage meaningfully or even determine the mental state of the people behind them.

“You can’t even tell whether you’re dealing with a brainy person or an idiot. And yet they want to dictate how you should behave on your own page,” she added.

The broadcaster’s remarks speak to a broader conversation around cyberbullying and the lack of accountability on social media.

While some fans encouraged her to ignore such comments and “be the bigger person,” MzGee insisted that trolls should not be allowed to operate unchecked. She urged critics to own their comments and identities if they truly believe in what they post.

“If you want to do drama, let’s do drama face-to-face. Don’t hide. If you’re going to be disrespectful, be bold enough to come with your real name and picture.”

Her comments come after she was attacked on social media for sharing a video of herself in a joyous mood.

Build inclusive societies – Ghana’s First Lady to African counterparts

0

Ghana’s First Lady, Lordina Mahama Ghana’s First Lady, Lordina Mahama

Ghana’s First Lady, Lordina Mahama, has encouraged African First Ladies to intensify efforts in building healthier and more inclusive societies for national development.

She emphasised that Africa must aspire to greatness by uniting public and private partnerships, combining compassion with expertise, and ensuring that every life—no matter how remote or marginalised—can flourish.

Addressing the opening of the 2025 Merck Foundation Africa First Ladies Initiative Platform in Dubai on Wednesday, Mrs Mahama noted that the Merck Foundation Talent Programme had empowered 110 Ghanaian youth in fields such as music, ICT, filmmaking, and fashion, helping them to recognise their natural talents and pursue excellence.

“I urge all of us to take this spirit home and increase our efforts to build healthier, more inclusive societies,” she said.

The two-day summit marked the eighth anniversary of the Merck Foundation and the 13th anniversary of its development programmes, reflecting a legacy of impactful partnerships and support for vulnerable communities across Africa.

Mrs Mahama expressed gratitude to the Merck Foundation for “30 years of study support and empowering many people to heal, dream, and rise.”

She reaffirmed her commitment to strengthening collaboration through the Lordina Foundation, particularly in enhancing health, education, and combatting stigma in Ghana.

“Our partnership with you will deliver a lot to the benefit of our people,” she stated.

Mrs Mahama praised the Foundation’s role in transforming public health, girls’ education, and media in Africa, stressing the need to “raise voices and break the silence to ensure every woman recognises her worth and every child thrives in dignity and health.”

She reiterated: “I urge all of us to take this spirit home and increase our efforts to build healthier, more inclusive societies.”

Mrs Mahama joined 16 other African First Ladies in sharing experiences and solutions to common challenges.

Senator Dr Rasha Kelej, CEO of the Merck Foundation, applauded the First Ladies for their commitment.

She revealed that over 2,270 scholarships had been awarded to qualified doctors from 52 countries, covering 44 underserved specialties such as oncology, fertility care, cardiology, and trauma surgery.

Under the girls’ education programme, Senator Kelej noted that about 1,000 scholarships had been provided across more than 17 countries in partnership with First Ladies.

“…This is very important to create awareness about the impact and to encourage others to join our platform,” she added.

Prof. Dr Frank Stangenberg-Haverkamp, Chairman of the Merck Foundation Board of Trustees, cited a 2021 WHO report showing that Africa bears 24 per cent of the global disease burden, yet has only 2.91 healthcare workers per 1,000 people.

He noted that the human resource gap—worsened by the uneven distribution of the workforce between urban and rural areas, and between the public and private sectors—had significantly affected health outcomes.

“For instance, before the start of the Merck Foundation’s programmes in 2012, there was not a single oncologist or fertility and reproductive care specialist in some countries. But through the Foundation’s support and its partners, healthcare capacity in Africa has been significantly strengthened,” he added.

The annual summit featured panel discussions, alumni testimonials, media engagement, and a conference dinner, attracting high-level delegates from across the continent.

Experts question whether $499 gold Trump phone can be US-made

0

Experts have cast doubt on the Trump Organisation’s claim that its proposed smartphone can be entirely manufactured in the US.

One industry analyst told the BBC it would be “virtually impossible” for the gold-coloured handset, which will retail at $499 (£367.50), to be built in the United States.

Questions have also been raised about the ethics of what is the latest in a series of attempts to cash in on President Donald Trump’s name.

“It’s unbelievable that the Trump family has created yet another way for President Trump to personally profit while in office,” said Meghan Faulkner, communications director for Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington.

The phone will also come alongside a mobile phone service with a monthly fee of $47.45.

The figure is a reference to Trump serving as the country’s 47th and 45th president.

Trump has said he has put his business interests in a trust, which is managed by his children. The White House has maintained that he acts in the interests of all Americans.

But Ms Faulkner said the latest venture raised familiar issues, including whether the new business will win customers from people hoping to influence Trump and how the president will craft policies and regulations for an industry in which his family now has a stake.

Made in America?

The Trump family has not said which company would manufacture its phone in the United States.

“Eventually, all the phones can be built in the United States of America,” Eric Trump said on “The Benny Show” podcast on Monday, suggesting the phones released in August may not entirely be manufactured within the country.

Technology experts have questioned what the Trump Organisation’s “built in the United States” claim about its handsets means and argued it is probably not currently possible to manufacture smartphones from scratch in the US.

“They don’t even have a working prototype. It’s extremely unlikely,” said Prof Tinglong Dai, who teaches operations management at Johns Hopkins’ Carey Business School.

“You would have to have a miracle. You would need to have economies of scale. You would need to have a sustainable demand for this kind of product,” Prof Dai added.

The decision comes as Trump tries to pressure Apple chief executive Tim Cook to manufacture iPhones sold to American buyers in the US.

Last month, the president threatened to place a 25% import tax “at least” on iPhones not manufactured in America.

Analyst Leo Gebbie of CCS Insight noted that the US currently “simply does not have the high-tech supply chain” required for smartphone assembly, especially not in time to be released in August, as the Trump Organisation has said.

“However, it’s possible that the device could be assembled in the US with parts imported from abroad. This might be the most likely outcome that lets the T1 claim American sovereignty,” Mr Gebbie said.

The announcement was light on details, including the name of the business partner that will run the service and is licensing the name.

The Trump Organization did not immediately respond to questions from the BBC about its business partner, criticisms around potential ethics issues and a request for details of its “built in the United States” claim.

In announcing its plans, it said “hard-working Americans deserve a wireless service that’s affordable, reflects their values, and delivers reliable quality they can count on”.

It pitched a policy of “discounted” international calls to families with members serving outside the US in the military.

The announcement said the mobile service would have customer support staff based in the US to answer questions, as well as the gold-coloured phone, which is currently available for pre-order.

Trump’s net worth has more than doubled

The deal is an extension of a business strategy that Trump embraced long before his presidency, striking deals to sell his name to hoteliers and golf course operators in exchange for fees and royalties.

But the opportunities to profit from his brand have expanded since he entered politics a decade ago.

In his most recent financial disclosure, Trump reported making more than $600m last year, including millions from items such as Trump-branded bibles, watches, sneakers and fragrances.

Forbes in March estimated his net worth was $5.1bn, more than double what it was a year earlier.

It said the surge was due in part to the president’s “diehard following”, which is credited with helping to prop up the value of Trump’s social media company that runs the Truth Social platform, which accounted for roughly half his wealth last year.

The idea of a Trump-related smartphone has received mixed reactions online, with some people ready to buy it and others mocking the concept.

“Where do I have to wait in line to buy the new Trump phone?” one X user wrote.

Others have mocked the design, and poked fun at the phone habits of the man it’s named after, asking if texts on the new handset will all be in capital letters.

The mobile phone market in the US is currently dominated by three major players: AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile, which all offer phone service starting at less than $40 a month.

There is also a growing number of smaller firms paying to use those networks to target niche groups of potential customers by offering lower prices or tailored plans.

The largest of those companies, which are known as mobile virtual network providers, have less than 10 million subscribers, according to a 2024 report by the Federal Communications Commission.

Mint Mobile, which was backed by Hollywood star Ryan Reynolds, was sold to T-Mobile for $1.35bn in 2023. At the time, one analyst estimated the service had roughly two to three million subscribers.

The actor had a 25% stake in the business, giving him a potential payout of about $300m.

Makola onion seller sues Telecel for GH¢2 million for using her picture without her consent

0

An onion seller near Makola Market in Accra, Madam Faustina Djagbele Abbey, has filed a GH¢ 2 million lawsuits against telecom giant Telecel, operated by Ghana Telecommunications Company Limited, for what she describes as a gross violation of her privacy, personal liberties, and image rights.

According to court documents filed at the High Court, through her legal counsel Bernard Owiredu Donkor of Thompson Law Consult, Madam Abbey claims Telecel used her photograph without her knowledge or consent in marketing campaigns for the company’s “Telecel Red Save” product.

The said image has reportedly been circulated widely across billboards, traditional media, and social media platforms.

In her statement of claim, Madam Abbey avers that she only became aware of the unauthorised use of her image after being alerted by friends and customers. She says the unexpected publicity has led to psychological distress, strained family relations, and misconceptions about her financial status.

According to her, some family members now assume she has become financially well-off, resulting in tension and discomfort in her personal life.

“The use of my photograph without my consent has unnecessarily exposed me,” Madam Abbey noted in her writ.

“I am unable to deal with the enormous publicity. It has impacted heavily on my mental health.”

She also alleges that Telecel’s actions were deliberate and targeted, exploiting her vulnerable position as a market trader for corporate gain. She warns that the company is likely to continue its conduct unless the court intervenes.

Madam Abbey is seeking three key reliefs from the High Court:

1.A declaration that Telecel violated her privacy and personal liberties.

2.A declaration that her image rights were abused through the unauthorized use of her photo.

3.An order directing Telecel to pay GHC 2,000,000.00 as compensation for the alleged violations.

Additionally, she wants all advertisements bearing her image whether on billboards, social media, or any other platforms to be pulled down.

This can never happen under Nkrumah, Rawlings or Acheampong – Kwesi Pratt on Gilad’s comment on Ghana

0

A photo collage of Israeli Ambassador to Ghana, Roey Gilad and Kwesi Pratt Jnr A photo collage of Israeli Ambassador to Ghana, Roey Gilad and Kwesi Pratt Jnr

Veteran journalist and Managing Editor of The Insight newspaper, Kwesi Pratt Jnr, has criticised the Israeli Ambassador to Ghana, Roey Gilad, following comments the envoy made regarding Ghana’s recent vote abstention on Iran’s nuclear compliance at a Vienna-based International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) meeting.

Speaking during a panel discussion on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana on June 18, 2025, Pratt condemned what he described as the “effrontery” of the ambassador for questioning Ghana’s foreign policy stance, accusing him of overstepping diplomatic boundaries.

“The arrogance of Israel and its officials is sickening, the Israeli ambassador in Ghana is teaching our government how to behave in international relations? Who is he to determine Ghana’s interests?” he questioned.

According to Pratt, Gilad’s reported call for Ghana to reconsider its traditional alignment with the African Union (AU), Non-Aligned Movement, and the Arab League represents an unacceptable intrusion into Ghana’s sovereignty.

“This is a direct insult to Ghana. He says our government is not pursuing Ghanaian interests well, who gave him that authority? These are decisions for the Ghanaian people to make,” he fumed.

Pratt argued that such interference would not have been tolerated under previous leaders such as Kwame Nkrumah, General Ignatius Kutu Acheampong, or Jerry John Rawlings.

“This could never have happened under Nkrumah, Acheampong or Rawlings. Our government must show some muscle and defend our sovereignty,” he asserted.

Pratt called on the Ghanaian government to take immediate diplomatic action in response to what he sees as disrespectful conduct.

“I want to see this government take some action to protect national dignity. Let these diplomats understand that it is we, the Ghanaian people, who gave our leaders the mandate, not any foreign envoy,” he said.

The controversy stems from remarks made by Ambassador Gilad during a recent breakfast meeting with editors, where he expressed disappointment in Ghana’s abstention from the IAEA vote regarding Iran’s nuclear activities.

Gilad acknowledged Ghana’s sovereign right to abstain but suggested a rethink of its longstanding non-aligned policy, which he claimed is heavily influenced by the AU and Arab League.

He urged Ghana to take a more “balanced” approach to global issues and questioned whether abstention was in the country’s best interest.

“Even though Israel respects Ghana’s sovereignty and non-aligned stance, I don’t know whether this [abstention] serves the best interest for Ghana,” Gilad said.

Despite Ghana’s neutrality in the vote, the ambassador highlighted Israel’s support for Ghana in various sectors, including agriculture. He also pointed to visible signs of affinity between the two countries, such as the presence of Israeli flags on canoes at Accra’s beaches and the popularity of Israeli products at Makola Market.

However, these symbolic gestures, Gilad noted, do not always translate into support on the international stage, an observation that appears to have triggered Pratt’s fiery rebuttal.

Asante Kotoko have officially presented the 2024/25 MTN FA Cup trophy to the life patron of the club, His Royal Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi.

The presentation ceremony, held on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, followed the Porcupine Warriors’ hard-fought 2-1 victory over Golden Kick FC in Sunday’s FA Cup final at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium.

Kwame Opoku opened the scoring early for Kotoko, but the Division One side equalised through a stunning free-kick from Bless Ege, sending both sides into the break level.

In a dramatic conclusion to the match, Kotoko were awarded a controversial late penalty, which Opoku calmly converted to hand coach Karim Zito’s side their 10th FA Cup title.

After returning to Kumasi on Monday, June 16, 2025, Kotoko’s delegation visited the Manhyia Palace on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, to pay homage and present the trophy to Otumfuo, who has been a longstanding spiritual and moral pillar for the club.

The delegation was led by Interim Management Committee (IMC) Chairman Nana Apinkrah Akwasi Awuah, with key figures including Technical Director Kwesi Appiah and club legend Malik Jabir also in attendance.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II praised the team for their resilience and dedication throughout the competition and lauded their composure in the final.

He also used the occasion to encourage the players and management to build on this success and aim for a strong showing in continental competition next season.

Sinking fund reactivation is our insurance – Economic Advisor Sharif Mahmud Khalid on Fitch upgrade

0

The Economic Policy Advisor to the Vice President has described the reactivation of Ghana’s sinking fund as a critical step in shielding the country from future debt shocks.

Dr Sharif Mahmud Khalid, speaking on Joy News’ PM Express on Wednesday, June 17, argued that this move, along with fiscal discipline and targeted reforms, is what earned the country its latest credit upgrade by Fitch Ratings.

Fitch had upgraded Ghana’s Long-Term Foreign-Currency Issuer Default Rating (IDR) from ‘Restricted Default’ to ‘B-’ with a Stable Outlook, citing improved debt servicing prospects.

Dr Sharif Khalid said, “If you’ve activated a sinking fund, which is an insurance measure, to service most of these debts, and then you’ve committed to both external and domestic debt programs, invariably, it’s going to improve [your rating].”

He called the sinking fund a signal of commitment and responsibility.

“It’s not just about Fitch. It’s about what we’re doing internally. Reactivating the sinking fund tells the markets that we are serious about debt service. That’s insurance for our future.”

Dr Sharif Khalid was quick to clarify that this recovery isn’t accidental.

“The government’s commitment, initiative, and program have brought us here. This didn’t come from luck. It came from decisions—some of them difficult ones.”

Responding to co-panellist Prof. Godfred Bokpin’s concerns about premature confidence, Dr Sharif Khalid said the government isn’t acting with hubris.

“I wouldn’t say the government is getting bullish. What we’re doing is stabilising. That’s the priority. We’re tightening internal controls, reducing appointments, and managing spending. These are deliberate signals to the market.”

He explained that the impact of spending decisions is often preempted by the budget itself.

“Once the budget is read, the market responds—whether you’ve spent a penny or not. That’s because the market knows your allocations. So yes, spending matters, but perception drives market response too.”

On the bigger picture, Dr Sharif Khalid tied Ghana’s recovery trajectory to its domestic debt exchange programme, which helped calm investor fears and reduce short-term risk.

“Prof [Bokpin] mentioned that we started to make some gains thanks to the domestic debt exchange programme. That’s true. That alone sent a signal to rating agencies. And now that we’ve made external commitments through the Paris Club and China, those too feed into the outlook.”

Despite the external upgrade, Dr Sharif Khalid noted that the government isn’t rushing back to foreign capital markets.

“We’re not ready to push externally yet. We’re still focused on stabilising the domestic market. Until we see more consistency and resilience at home, we’re holding off.”

Dr Sharif Khalid was both optimistic and cautious. While celebrating the upgrade, he stressed that it should be seen as a “vote of confidence in our reforms”, not an invitation to relax.

“The last thing we want is to fall back. We’ve seen the bottom. We’ve taken the pain. Now we have to build. The reactivation of the sinking fund shows we’re planning ahead.”

‘A Potential Turning Point’: Fitch Lifts Ghana’s Credit Rating To B- As Inflation Drops, Outlook Stabilizes

The credit rating upgrade aligns with improving macroeconomic indicators. Inflation slowed to 18.4% in May, down from 21.2% in April, marking the lowest reading since February 2022, according to data released by the Ghana Statistical Service in early June.

“This signals a potential turning point in Ghana’s post-Covid and post-debt-restructuring economic recovery,” says David Amuquandoh, a Ghanaian financial expert and the founder and CEO of Lyte Digital Inc., to FORBES AFRICA.

GPL champions Bibiani Gold Stars close to signing former Nsoatreman defender Emmanuel Ankrah

Bibiani Gold Stars are in advanced negotiations to sign former Nsoatreman FC center-back Emmanuel Ankrah, GHANASoccernet can exclusively reveal.

The Ghana Premier League champions, preparing for their CAF Champions League debut, have identified the experienced defender as a key reinforcement for next season.

Ankrah previously worked under Gold Stars coach Frimpong Manso during their time together at Bofoakwa Tano in the 2023/24 campaign.

Manso is reportedly pushing hard to reunite with the commanding center-back, valuing his leadership qualities and understanding of the coach’s system.

The deal is now in its final stages, with only minor details remaining before completion.

Ankrah’s potential arrival would bolster Gold Stars’ defensive options as they prepare for both domestic and continental competitions.

His familiarity with Manso’s methods could prove invaluable during their historic Champions League campaign.

Ghana defender Baba Rahman unfazed by boos as he eyes Black Stars comeback

0

Ghana defender Baba Rahman Ghana defender Baba Rahman

Ghana defender Baba Rahman says he has learned to cope with jeers from fans and remains open to returning to the Black Stars, after over a year away from the national team.

The left-back, who impressed for Greek side PAOK last season, says he remains in contact with the national team technical team and is preparing for a possible comeback.

Speaking on the boos, which many thoughts had contributed largely to his national team break, Rahman told Joy Sports, “The jeering didn’t faze me during the match, as a pro, you learn to handle that. But after the final whistle, as I walked to the team bus, it really hit home,” he said.

“We had just won, so naturally, I expected some enthusiasm or backing, but instead, I was still being jeered. That part was hard to swallow.”

Since that incident, Rahman has stayed away from the Black Stars despite being consistent for his club and being one of Ghana’s most improved defenders in recent seasons, playing at a high level, including excelling in European competitions such as the Europa League.

His last match was in September 2023, when he was subjected to boos by Black Stars fans, who felt he had underperformed in the 2-1 victory over the Central African Republic in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match.

Fight against drugs not merely a professional duty, but a moral obligation

0

Interior Minister, Mohammed Mubarak-Muntaka Interior Minister, Mohammed Mubarak-Muntaka

Interior Minister Mohammed Mubarak-Muntaka has urged the graduating officers of the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) Cadet Course 8 to see the fight against drugs as a moral obligation to protect communities, families, and the future.

He said the fight is not merely a professional duty and raised an alarm over the rise in the number of young people becoming addicted to prescription drugs

“This is worrying,” the Minister said, and noted that the trend not only threatened individual lives, but the entire society.

“Ghana is not immune to the scourge of illicit drug trafficking and substance abuse, so as you step into your roles as Narcotics Control Officers, remember that the thrust of the nation rests upon your shoulders,” the Minister urged.

Alhaji Muntaka was speaking at the graduation parade and parchment ceremony for the NACOC Cadet Course 8, at the Leadership Training School, Eastern Naval Command at Tema, in Accra.

The occasion marked an important feat in Ghana’s collective efforts to combat the menace of illicit drugs and ensure the safety and well-being of citizenry.

The ceremony witnessed the graduation of 186 cadet officers: 72 females and 114 males who have successfully completed the mandatory Basic Narcotics Cadet Training Programme to augment the institution’s manpower capacity in combating the illicit drug menace confronting the Country.

The training, which lasted for six and half months has equipped the officer cadets with skills in areas such as pharmacology of drugs, financial investigations, profiling of passengers, document fraud, and intelligence cycle.

Muntaka said the government remained committed to providing the necessary support to NACOC to ensure that the Commission continued to produce well-trained cadets who would serve not only NACOC, but also other security agencies across the nation.

The minister said the recent increase in the seizure of illicit narcotic drugs and the arrest of suspected drug traffickers was an indication of Ghana’s renewed fight against illicit drugs.

“…the increase in the arrest is an explicit manifestation of much more tighter measures put in place to make Ghana unattractive for illicit drugs trafficking syndicates,” he stressed.

He said drug trafficking networks had become more evasive and complex in recent times, exploiting borders, the youth, and other vulnerable areas but the government, in collaboration with NACOC, was committed to dismantling these networks and ensuring a safer environment for all citizens.

Muntaka said enforcement alone was not enough, and that it was vital to strengthen prevention programmes, enhance rehabilitation efforts, and strengthen international cooperation to tackle this menace at its roots.

He directed NACOC as a matter of urgency to operationalise the Substance Use Disorder Rehabilitation Fund as provided for in section 22 of the NACOC Act, 2020.

He said the fund would facilitate among others, research in the area of addiction disease and treatment of persons with substance use disorders, as well as setting up of rehabilitation centres for the treatment of persons with substance use disorders, as drug use was a public health issue.

The Minister donated to the fund a seed money and urged all and sundry, particularly corporate bodies to support the fund as part of their corporate social responsibilities in addressing the threats of substance abuse that was becoming a canker among the youth.

He called on the leadership of NACOC and other security agencies, for intense collaboration and intelligence-sharing in the common and shared responsibility in the fight against illicit drug trafficking and substance abuse.

The award winners were Mr. Richard Kobetta, best in shooting, Lawrence Edem Mensah, best in physical training male and best in drill, and Madam Margaret Kudiabor, best in physical training female.

Madam Yamyolia Nahajat Ananga Wuntima was awarded as the best in academics and the overall best.

Golden Kick FC head coach Fiifi Parker Hanson is proud of his team’s achievement in reaching the FA Cup final, despite suffering a 2-1 defeat to Asante Kotoko.

Hanson believes that playing in the final has been a valuable experience for his side.

“Playing in the final of the FA Cup has been a great value and a great achievement for the team,” Hanson said. He emphasised that the experience gained from participating in the final is more important than the outcome.

Hanson revealed that his team focused on their own preparations, without paying much attention to their opponents.

“Our focus was not on Asante Kotoko but on ourselves,” he said. “We did not even watch their matches during preparation for the final.”

The FA Cup final appearance is a significant milestone for Golden Kick FC, and Hanson is likely to build on this experience to drive future success. Asante Kotoko, meanwhile, will represent Ghana in the 2025/26 CAF Confederation Cup.

Ghana international Kamaldeen Sulemana Ghana international Kamaldeen Sulemana

Atalanta have joined the race to sign Ghana international Kamaldeen Sulemana from Southampton this summer.

The Serie A outfit, who are keen to make a meaningful impact next campaign, have earmarked the pacey winger as one of their targets for the summer transfer window. The club is determined to add Sulemana to their ranks for the 2025/26 football campaign.

Amid growing interest in the attacker, Southampton are demanding a 10m euros valuation for the transfer of the talented Ghanaian winger.

Atalanta have already contacted Sulemana’s representative in an attempt to lure the winger to Italy this window.

The 23-year-old made 26 appearances in the Premier league in the recently concluded season, scoring one goal and providing an assist across the period.

Sulemana will compete in the English Championship in the upcoming campaign if he is unable to secure a move from Southampton this summer. The Saints struggled in the recently concluded Premier League season, finishing bottom with just 12 points from 38 matches.

Currently under contract until 2027, the pacey Ghanaian winger has yet to make a decision about his future. While on holidays, the former FC Nordjaelland and Stade Rennais star is weighing up his options having attracted interested from several clubs in Europe.

Aside, Atalanta, Sulemana is on the wishlist of fellow Serie A club Genoa and Turkish outfit Trabzonspor.

No bias towards Bawumia in NPP presidential Race – General Secretary

Bawumia 5 NPP’s 2024 Flagbearer and 2028 Presidential candidate hopeful, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia

The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) general secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua, has denied rumors that the party’s next presidential primary is being planned to benefit Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia or any other contender.

This follows issues surrounding the NPP’s officially scheduled January 31, 2026, presidential primary. In response to suggestions made by the Constitution Review Committee, the National Council of the party authorized the date.

In an interview on Wednesday, June 18, on Channel One TV, Kodua rejected the idea as baseless, saying “I will be very surprised for anyone to think that an election that is yet to be conducted will favour a particular candidate.”

In support of the party’s internal election system, he pointed out that its procedures had been democratic and constant over time.

“If you have monitored our electoral history even from 1992, 1996 to 2000, at every election — from national through to polling stations — about 70%, sometimes even 80%, of current executives retain their positions,” citinewsroom.com quoted him to have said.

Kodua stressed that no candidate gains an advantage from the order of internal elections, whether they begin at the national level or at the level of polling stations.

“The fact that you may even start from polling station to national or national to polling station does not make it skewed towards a particular person. There are current executives who will still continue to be executives.”

The Southern Sector recorded a 2-1 win over the Northern Sector in the 2025 All Star Festival event.

The game, which took place at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium on June 18, 2025, saw numerous Black Stars players feature for both teams.

The Southern Sector began the game on a high note, scoring two goals in the first half.

Majeed Ashimeru’s brilliant strike in front of the penalty box broke the deadlock before another player added the second.

The Northern Sector, captained by Jordan Ayew, created chances in the second half, but Benjamin Asare’s excellent saves denied them more goals.

As they persistently pressed, Emanuel Boateng netted the consolation goal, but their search for an equaliser proved futile due to Asare’s heroics, and the match ended 2-1.

Some renowned players who featured for the Southern Zone include Thomas Partey (captain), Majeed Ashimeru, Razak Simpson, Gideon Mensah, and others.

Those who represented the Northern Sector include Jordan Ayew (captain), Emmanuel Boateng, Samuel Owusu, among others.

The All Star Festival is an annual football event that brings together Ghanaian football stars to compete for fans’ enjoyment.

‘I just want to bury my grandma but Ghana Embassy has my passport and won’t respond’

0

Jamaican content creator known as Maya Jamaican content creator known as Maya

A Jamaican content creator known as Maya has taken to social media to share her experience with the Ghana Embassy in Washington, D C, after visa processing delays left her unable to travel home to attend her grandmother’s funeral.

In a video message that has since gone viral, Maya revealed she submitted her passport to the Ghanaian embassy over six weeks ago to renew her visa paying for a 15- to 20-day service but has yet to receive any response or her passport.

“My grandma just died in Jamaica. I am devastated. I want to go home for her funeral and I can’t because of the Ghanaian embassy in Washington, D C,” she said.

Maya said her repeated efforts to reach the embassy through phone calls, emails, and live chat support have yielded no results.

“Nobody answers the phone. Nobody answers an email, this is unacceptable, Ghana. This is unreasonable.”

She also explained that while Jamaican passport holders can travel to Ghana visa-free, her current Jamaican passport has expired, making it impossible to travel without her Ghanaian visa.

“How is it you can accept people’s money, people who have a love and a genuine interest in visiting your country and you treat people like this?” I have a family emergency… and nobody has the courtesy to respond?”

Across social media and travel forums, applicants report similar frustrations: prolonged processing times, lack of communication, and unclear guidance.

Many say their travel plans have been upended or delayed due to what they describe as inefficiency at the embassy.

Meanwhile, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Minister of Foreign Affairs, has blamed the United States Postal Service’s (USPS) logistical issues for the delays in the issuance of U S passports and visas.

On Wednesday, June 18, 2025, he revealed this information on the floor of Parliament in response to mounting worries about visa packages being late, which have caused applicants to become anxious in recent weeks.

The minister claims that while there has been a noticeable improvement in the procedures for issuing passports and visas, the last phase of delivery continues to be a problem.

“While the visa and passport issuance process has significantly improved, the primary challenge remains mainly in delays, largely due to logistical failures by the United States Postal Service,” he noted.

About 490 legitimately approved visa packages that were mailed on June 6 and 9, 2025, were improperly scanned, according to Ablakwa.

This resulted in tracking issues and general anxiety among applicants.

“In response, we have directly engaged USPS to mitigate future disruptions,” the minister assured Parliament.

Additionally, he described the actions taken to resolve the problem. In order to increase tracking and delivery efficiency, mail deployments are being staggered, with a daily limit of 200 items.

The minister reiterated the government’s resolve to guarantee that all Ghanaians obtain their travel documents in a timely and stress-free manner, and he said that monitoring systems are being reinforced to prevent similar occurrences from happening again.

Gban community group condemns violent attack on police, demands urgent security measures

0

The AGD has described the attack as life-threatening and a tragic validation of their warnings The AGD has described the attack as life-threatening and a tragic validation of their warnings

The Alliance for Gban Development (AGD), a community-based organization in the mining enclave of Gban in the Talensi District of the Upper East Region, has condemned a recent violent attack on police patrol officers and renewed its urgent call for improved and lasting security measures in the area.

The group’s statement follows a disturbing incident on the night of June 13, 2025, when four police officers on patrol were ambushed by unidentified gunmen.

Three officers sustained gunshot wounds and were rushed to a private health facility in Bolgatanga after being rescued by reinforcements.

The AGD described the attack as “life-threatening” and a tragic validation of its earlier warnings about growing insecurity in the area, which were raised during a press conference on June 7, 2025.

That earlier warning prompted a swift response from regional and district authorities, including the deployment of ten additional officers to support the existing six in Gban.

However, the AGD says the renewed violence shows that the interventions are insufficient and poorly equipped to match the threat levels.

According to the group, patrol officers continue to use motorbikes despite operating in a volatile, gold-rich area with poor road infrastructure.

“This is a gross failure by authorities in strategic security deployment,” the group stated in a press release.

The AGD is demanding the following:

1. Provision of Armoured Patrol Vehicles

The group is calling for the immediate provision of at least two armoured pickup vehicles by Earl Group International and Cardinal Namdini Mining Limited. They have issued a July 2025 ultimatum, threatening to stage demonstrations if no action is taken.

2. Permanent Police Presence

They are demanding adequate and permanent police deployment at strategic points across the mining enclave—not as a temporary intervention, but as a long-term commitment to community safety.

3. Intelligence-led Investigations

The AGD expressed concern over the lack of arrests despite numerous armed robbery cases and hinted at possible complicity within the security apparatus. They are calling for a thorough, intelligence-led investigation to bring the perpetrators to justice.

The AGD stressed that the region cannot continue to live under the constant threat of violence and urged national security agencies to act decisively—not just issue promises.

“Our people deserve to live without fear. Our police deserve to serve without being sacrificed,” the group’s Secretary John Kpal Bognaab, added.

The Ministry of Youth Development and Empowerment has announced the immediate suspension of the Central Management System (CMS) used by the National Service Authority (NSA) for the posting of service personnel.

“This decisive step has been taken in the national interest,” the statement read.

“Measures are being put in place to ensure that the operations of the Authority are not disrupted. Alternative systems and verification procedures are being reviewed to maintain smooth and transparent service delivery,” the statement noted.

While the Ministry did not disclose specific details about the nature of the concerns, it emphasised that the process will be thorough and in the best interest of the public.

The Tricky Trees looks to make more strategic signings to strengthen their squad and are eager to start the season with a win at the City Ground against Brentford.

Under the guidance of Thomas Frank, Brentford have established themselves as a formidable Premier League side. The Bees are targeting a top-half finish and potential European qualification. However, they face challenges with the departure of long-term manager Thomas Frank and potential key player exits. Whoever the new manager will be, will aim to win their first game to bring some hope of continuous glory.

Under the guidance of Fabian Hürzeler, Brighton have shown significant progress. The Seagulls are targeting a top-six finish to secure European football for the upcoming season.

“Unwarranted touches on another person’s body is a violation and could lead to legal action.

The university was founded in 1982 as Ogun State University when Olabisi Onabanjo was state governor. It was renamed after him in 2001.

Krachi East MP calls for intensive public education against land degradation

0

Member of Parliament for Krachi East, Nelson Kofi Djabab Member of Parliament for Krachi East, Nelson Kofi Djabab

The Member of Parliament for Krachi East, Nelson Kofi Djabab, has called for intensive public education to combat rampant land degradation, linking the phenomenon to climate change.

Speaking during parliamentary proceedings on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, the MP emphasised the need for greater community awareness, building on discussions about recent rainstorms that have affected his constituency and others.

Djabab identified practices such as indiscriminate bush burning, tree felling, and general land degradation as major contributors to environmental depletion, warning that the nation’s climate cover is rapidly diminishing.

He noted that the problem, already evident in areas like Nandom, could soon affect the entire country if not urgently addressed.

The MP urged the Ghana National Fire Service and other relevant stakeholders to intensify efforts in educating communities about the consequences of such destructive activities.

“I call on the Ghana National Fire Service to educate our people because rampant environmental destruction—such as indiscriminate bush burning, tree felling, and land degradation—is becoming widespread,” he stated.

He also commended President John Dramani Mahama’s “One Man, One Tree” initiative, which aims to promote environmental conservation, and encouraged schools to revive student-led tree-planting exercises as a way to combat degradation.

“It is against this background that I call on schools across the country to support this timely and relevant initiative. We need to return to the days when schoolchildren regularly planted trees on their school compounds,” he urged.

Djabab further appealed to stakeholders in the education sector, including headmasters and teachers, to prioritise tree planting as a vital effort to protect the environment for future generations.

NPP Race: We’re keeping aspirants in check

0

General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Kodua Frimpong, has revealed that the party leadership is actively working behind the scenes to address internal tensions and manage the conduct of presidential aspirants ahead of the January 2026 primaries.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s The Point of View on Wednesday, June 18, Kodua responded to concerns that the NPP leadership was not doing enough to call its presidential hopefuls to order amid growing intra-party jabs and public criticisms.

According to him, the absence of public rebukes should not be misconstrued as inaction.

“That’s why we continue to caution personalities in the party. There are so many behind-the-scenes discussions and meetings and activities that go on. And you may not know the number of times that we have engaged certain personalities… how we’re able to prevent or even stop people from making certain comments and also how we’re even able to calm tempers in certain quarters,” he stated.

He stressed that while the party may not always issue public statements to condemn particular behaviour, internal structures are actively at work to maintain unity and discipline.

“The fact that I have not come out publicly to rebuke Mr. A or B doesn’t mean the party has not taken certain actions,” Kodua added.

The NPP is preparing for its presidential primaries scheduled for January 31, 2026, amid a competitive race involving several high-profile figures. With rising tensions among factions, party officials are under pressure to maintain cohesion and protect the party’s image in the lead-up to the 2028 general elections.

Justice Amaleboba supports limit on Supreme Court judges but calls for reforms first

0

Supreme Court nominee Justice Hafisata Amaleboba has backed proposals to place a limit on the number of justices serving on the Supreme Court bench but cautioned that such a move should follow reforms to address the operational challenges facing the judiciary.

She made the remark on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, during her vetting by Parliament’s Appointments Committee.

“I support capping the number of Supreme Court judges, but we should not rush to do so until we address the challenges facing the Supreme Court, such as case backlogs and its various jurisdictions,” Justice Amaleboba said in response to a question at the vetting.

According to her, placing a cap too early, without addressing the court’s growing workload and overlapping jurisdictions, could create more problems in the future.

“Prematurely capping the number could necessitate frequent constitutional amendments if increases are justified. Once these issues are resolved, we can better assess annual caseloads and establish a reasonable cap,” she added.

Ghana’s Supreme Court currently has 13 justices. If all seven nominees under consideration are approved, including Justice Amaleboba, the number will rise to 20. This prospect has stirred debate within Parliament and among legal professionals over its possible impact on the court’s effectiveness and public confidence.

Dr Amaleboba also spoke on the responsibilities of judges who hold traditional titles, stating that such judges must be cautious in public discourse.

“As a judge and a chief, one must be measured in political commentary, especially in supporting one group over another,” she said. “Judges should exercise restraint in their language to maintain neutrality.”

LatexFoamPromo

During the vetting, she explained that Ghana’s legal framework already allows for child maintenance under the Matrimonial Causes Act.

“In Ghana, we already have provisions for child support, referred to as maintenance,” she said. “Under the law, one can apply for maintenance without seeking divorce.”

She added that the adoption process begins with the Department of Social Welfare, which conducts an initial assessment before a court decision is made. A Central Adoption Authority, she noted, has now been established to manage such applications more efficiently.

The Appointments Committee is expected to complete its vetting of all the nominees in the coming days, after which it will present its recommendations to Parliament.

Ghana and China’s Hunan Province to deepen economic relations

The minister invited more Hunan multinational companies to explore business opportunities The minister invited more Hunan multinational companies to explore business opportunities

Ghana and China’s Hunan Province have committed to strengthening economic cooperation in agriculture and agribusiness, smart industrialisation, and sustainable mineral processing, following high-level talks at the 4th China-Africa Economic and Trade Expo (CAETE).

Cao Zhiqiang, Vice Governor of Hunan, hosted Ghana’s Minister for Trade, Agribusiness, and Industry, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, for bilateral discussions focused on building stronger trade, investment, and technical exchanges between Ghana and Hunan Province.

In her remarks, the minister commended the Vice Governor and the Hunan Province for their high level of industrialisation driven by innovation and underscored the need for partnership.

She indicated that the achievements of the province were a clear indication that, by walking shoulder to shoulder, Ghana could leverage this strategic relationship to leapfrog its industrialisation agenda.

Additionally, the minister highlighted Ghana’s stable business environment, adherence to the rule of law, competitive returns on investment, and a youthful and growing middle class as key factors that should attract potential investors from Hunan Province.

She also emphasised Ghana’s strategic location as a gateway to the West African region and global markets.

The minister invited more multinational companies from Hunan to explore business opportunities in manufacturing, garments and textiles, pharmaceuticals, and components manufacturing, and to take advantage of Ghana’s 24-hour economy policy.

Bilateral trade between Ghana and Hunan Province was estimated at USD 2.5 billion as of the end of 2024, with at least eight top multinational companies from Hunan operating in Ghana. These include Zonda, Sany, Hunan Construction, and Zoomlion.

The minister extended an invitation to the Vice Governor to lead a high-level delegation to Ghana to explore further business opportunities later in the year.

Cao Zhiqiang commended the minister for making a strong case for investment in Africa, particularly in Ghana, during the CEO Dialogue.

According to the Vice Governor, the province is committed to partnering with the government of Ghana and the private sector to enhance industrialisation for mutual benefit.

Touching on the province’s current economic development, the Vice Governor emphasised that Hunan is one of the fastest-growing provinces in China, with a 2024 GDP of approximately 5.4 trillion yuan (about USD 760 billion), growing around 5.5% year-on-year—slightly above the national average.

The tertiary sector (services) contributed significantly to this growth, while advanced manufacturing and the digital economy also expanded rapidly.

The Vice Governor noted that the province has positioned itself as a hub for industrial innovation and research, aerodynamics, logistics and infrastructure development, and education, among others.

He agreed to the minister’s proposal for technical exchanges between Ghana and Hunan to enhance skills and expertise development in critical sectors of the economy.

Ghana’s top leagues, including the Premier League, Malta Guinness Women’s Premier League, and Division One League, will maintain Sunday matchdays. The MTN FA Cup will feature mostly weekend matches, with select midweek games in the early rounds. Women’s FA Cup matches will also remain weekend fixtures.

Digital football makes a return with the eTrophy eFootball competition, and both the Beach Soccer and Futsal Premier Leagues will continue as part of the season’s offerings.

On the regional front, leagues such as Division Two, Division Three, and the Colts competitions are expected to begin by October 1 and finish by May 31.

A major expansion of the Girls Colts League (U15 and U17) will take place nationwide, supported by FIFA and the Ten Regional Football Associations.

The GFA also plans off-season youth tournaments and has announced early timelines, including the player registration window and its 31st Annual Congress, aimed at improving season readiness for all stakeholders.

The Minister of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, has called for more strategic Chinese investments under the Belt and Road Initiative during the China-Africa CEO Dialogue held on Friday, June 13, 2025, in Changsha, Hunan Province.

The CEO Dialogue was one of the major highlight events of the 4th China-Africa Economic and Trade Expo (CAETE), which took place from June 12 to 15.

The Dialogue attracted more than 500 high-level participants, including government officials, CEOs of state agencies and multinational companies, representatives from international organizations, African chambers of commerce, business associations and enterprises, financial institutions, and the China-Africa Development Fund (CADFund), among others.

The platform provided an opportunity for African and Chinese business communities to deepen engagement, with a focus on green energy and financial innovation as drivers of economic growth.

In her address, the Minister highlighted Ghana’s unique value proposition, anchored on a peaceful business environment, adherence to the rule of law, and its strategic location at the centre of the world—positioning the country as a gateway to the global market.

She noted that Ghana continues to attract significant Chinese private sector players, mentioning well-known names such as Zonda Sinotruk, Sunda, Keda, Sentuo, Sunon Asogli, and Huawei, which have become household names. The Minister therefore urged other potential Chinese investors to take advantage of the government’s flagship 24-hour economy policy.

Additionally, she made a strong case for Africa, emphasising that the continent is expected to be the second-fastest-growing economy in the world this year, with 40 countries—including Ghana—projected to achieve higher growth rates compared to 2023.

The Minister underscored that Africa stands at a pivotal moment of transformation, innovation, and industrial development.

According to her, the true potential of Africa lies not only in its natural resources but in its capacity to process, refine, and innovate—turning raw commodities into high-value products that generate jobs and drive sustainable economic growth.

“Let us move beyond traditional trade relationships and embrace transformational partnerships—ones that promote technology exchange, sustainable industrial practices, and globally competitive African enterprises,” she stated.

She also encouraged Chinese investors to leverage the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), which offers an unprecedented opportunity to access a market of 1.3 billion people with a combined GDP of $3.4 trillion and a rapidly growing middle class.

The just-ended 4th CAETE was expected to conclude 128 cooperation projects with a total value exceeding $7 billion through signed agreements and matchmaking sessions. These projects span sectors including manufacturing, energy, transportation, logistics, healthcare, and information services.

Other high-level speakers at the plenary session included Cao Zhiqiang, Vice Governor of the People’s Government of Hunan Province; Joseph Olasunkanmi, Director General of the Nigeria-China Strategic Partnership; Miss Ahunna Eziakonwa, Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations and Assistant Administrator and Director of the Regional Bureau for Africa at UNDP; and Chief Diana Chen, Chair of Choice International Group.

NPP presidential primaries not skewed to favour Bawumia

0

General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Kodua, has rejected claims that the party’s upcoming presidential primaries are being structured to favour Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia or any particular candidate.

This follows concerns surronding the NPP’s presidential primaries, which have been officially scheduled for January 31, 2026. The date was approved by the party’s National Council following recommendations from the Constitution Review Committee.

Speaking in an interview on Channel One TV’s The Point of View on Wednesday June 18, Kodua dismissed the notion as unfounded, stating, “I will be very surprised for anyone to think that an election that is yet to be conducted will favour a particular candidate.”

He defended the party’s internal election structure, noting that its electoral processes have remained consistent and democratic across the years.

“If you have monitored our electoral history even from 1992, 1996 to 2000, at every election — from national through to polling stations — about 70%, sometimes even 80%, of current executives retain their positions,” he explained.

Kodua emphasised that the sequence of internal elections, whether starting from the polling station level or national level, does not create an advantage for any aspirant.

“The fact that you may even start from polling station to national or national to polling station does not make it skewed towards a particular person. There are current executives who will still continue to be executives.”

We won’t repeat mistakes, forgive us – NPP to Ghanaians

0

The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Kodua, has issued a public apology on behalf of the party, acknowledging past governance shortcomings and pledging that the NPP will not repeat the mistakes of its previous administration if given another opportunity by the Ghanaian people.

Speaking candidly about the party’s performance in office , Kodua admitted that while the NPP made significant efforts during its time in government, it fell short in some areas.

“As a political party, certainly we did our best, but we couldn’t have gotten everything right,” he said. “And I have always said that on behalf of our then government, our political party — certain things that we could not do right — we apologise for it.”

The NPP, which lost the 2024 general elections after eight years in power, has been undergoing a period of introspection and restructuring.

Kodua emphasised the party’s readiness to learn from its past and grow stronger. “As a party, we are always ready to learn and make sure that when we come back to power, the good things that we did we will build on. And those mistakes that we made — we will not repeat those mistakes.”

His comments come as the party gears up for its next phase of political reorganisation, with the presidential primaries set for January 31, 2026, and a major constitutional reform expected to be adopted at the National Delegates Conference in July 2025. The NPP leadership has insisted that the party is focused on internal restructuring as a foundation for winning back public trust.
