Ghana’s Youth Minister joins Mark Cuban at Global Citizen summit in Detroit

0

Ghana’s Minister for Youth Development and Empowerment, George Opare Addo, joined global business and cultural leaders at the Global Citizen NOW summit in Detroit, urging greater investment in Africa’s youth to secure the continent’s digital future.

The event, which took place on Wednesday, brought together figures including billionaire investor Mark Cuban, Ethiopian-born celebrity chef Marcus Samuelsson, and Detroit’s Poet Laureate jessica Care moore.

Discussions focused on tackling urban challenges through innovation, small business growth and the responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI).

Speaking on a high-level panel, Mr Opare Addo called for young Africans to be equipped not just as consumers of technology, but as creators.

“For young people to be able to appreciate AI, then they must be not just users of it, but makers of it,” he told the global audience.

His comments highlighted concerns that African nations could be left behind as AI transforms economies and reshapes the global job market.

The minister’s message is closely tied to Ghana’s efforts to position itself as a centre for digital innovation.

The government has rolled out initiatives to integrate STEM and AI into school curricula and support start-ups led by young people in sectors such as agritech and fintech.

At the summit, Mr Opare Addo’s remarks came during discussions on how cities can become engines of equity and opportunity – issues also at the heart of Ghana’s development agenda.

Detroit was chosen as the host city due to its own story of resilience and cultural revival, drawing parallels with rapidly growing cities like Accra.

Other speakers included Mark Cuban, who described AI tools like ChatGPT as “the great equalizer” for small businesses, and Marcus Samuelsson, who stressed the power of food to unite communities and preserve cultural identity.

Detroit’s Poet Laureate jessica Care moore warned against losing local identities amid urban renewal, urging greater investment in the arts. Meanwhile, Global Citizen co-founder Simon Moss called on city leaders, not just national governments, to spearhead efforts to combat poverty and inequality.

The summit also launched “AI for All,” a global campaign aiming to equip 10 million people—particularly women and underserved youth—with AI literacy by 2030.

Ghana’s participation at such international forums underlines its commitment to making sure young people play a central role in driving the country’s digital transformation.

“Africa’s youth are not just a demographic statistic—they are the key to unlocking a more just, innovative, and prosperous future. But we must give them the tools not just to consume innovation, but to create it,” Opare Addo added.

Chris Brown pleads not guilty to more assault charges

The 36-year-old star is accused of causing actual bodily harm to a music producer The 36-year-old star is accused of causing actual bodily harm to a music producer

US singer Chris Brown has pleaded not guilty in court to two charges relating to an alleged bottle attack at a London nightclub two years ago.

The 36-year-old star is accused of causing actual bodily harm to a music producer during an incident that prosecutors have described as “unprovoked”.

He is also charged with having an offensive weapon – namely a tequila bottle.

The two charges were added last month to a more serious count of attempting to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH), to which Mr Brown has already pleaded not guilty. The singer will face trial in October 2026.

He wore a brown suit with dark rimmed glasses to the latest plea hearing at Southwark Crown Court in London on Friday.

He gave a brief wave as he arrived before putting his hand to his chest. About 20 fans turned up to support him in the public gallery, with two saying “we love you Chris” as he left the court.

Prosecutors have previously said the alleged victim, Abraham Diaw, was standing at the bar of Soho’s Tape nightclub on 19 February 2023 when Mr Brown struck him several times with a bottle.

The singer was arrested at the five-star Lowry hotel in Salford, Greater Manchester, in May, after returning to the UK to prepare for a European tour.

He was held in custody for almost a week, before being released after agreeing to pay a £5m security fee to the court.

A security fee is a financial guarantee to ensure a defendant returns to court. Mr Brown could be asked to forfeit the money if he breaches bail conditions, which were kept in place at Friday’s hearing.

Under those conditions, Mr Brown must live at an address in the UK while awaiting trial, and was ordered to surrender his passport to police.

However, he is allowed to honour his Breezy Bowl XX world tour dates by surrendering his passport but getting it back when he needs to travel to the gigs.

He has played a string of stadium and arena shows across the UK and Europe in recent weeks, ending in Paris last weekend. The North American leg of his tour is due to start later this month and end on 18 October.

The next court hearing has been scheduled for 24 October.

Mr Brown is one of the biggest stars in US R&B, with two Grammy Awards, and 19 top 10 singles in the UK – including hits like Turn Up The Music, Freaky Friday, With You and Don’t Wake Me Up.

His co-defendant Omololu Akinlolu, a 39-year-old American who performs under the name HoodyBaby, also pleaded not guilty to causing actual bodily harm.

He previously entered a not guilty plea to the charge of attempted grievous bodily harm.

Viral photos of gay couple kissing at Independence Square were AI-generated – Dafeamekpor claims

Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor is the Majority Chief Whip in Parliament Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor is the Majority Chief Whip in Parliament

The Majority Chief Whip in Parliament, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, has dismissed viral images of a gay couple kissing beneath Ghana’s Independence Arch as fake, asserting they were generated using artificial intelligence (AI).

Addressing the matter on the floor of Parliament on Friday, July 11,2025, the Member of Parliament for South Dayi said the images lacked authenticity and should not form the basis of any parliamentary action.

“The matters that the First Deputy Minority Whip alluded to regarding the fact that two persons were seen kissing at the Independence Square are totally falsehood.

“It was an AI-generated image posted by someone onto his social media handle, so my brother Habib has no documents to stand on predicate upon which he will be demanding that the Minister of Foreign Affairs be invited to speak to such matters and also to justify why we abstained from a certain vote at the UN”, he stated.

His comments come in response to concerns raised in Parliament over images of a South African gay couple, Lue and Rue, that went viral on social media.

The images showed the pair holding hands, kissing, and wrapped in the Ghanaian flag at iconic national monuments including the Independence Square and the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum.

The couple has since admitted that the act was a deliberate protest against Ghana’s controversial anti-LGBTQI+ Bill.

President John Dramani Mahama President John Dramani Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has directed the Minister for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, and the Attorney General, Dominic Ayine, to immediately review all fees imposed by shipping companies operating in Ghana and ensure that they receive parliamentary approval.

In a speech delivered on Friday, July 11, 2025 President Mahama emphasized that any charges levied without parliamentary approval are illegal and unjustified.

The directive follows a meeting he held with freight forwarders, who raised concerns about certain shipping lines imposing unapproved administrative fees that increase operational costs and undermine revenue optimization at Ghana’s ports.

“We have tasked the Minister of Transport to investigate the matter, engage with the shipping lines, and review those administrative charges.

“The law states that all fees and levies must be ratified by Parliament. Therefore, no entity can impose any fee within the jurisdiction of Ghana without such approval. We consulted the Attorney General, and it is clear that no fee or levy can be charged within Ghana’s territory without parliamentary endorsement,” citinewsroom.com quotes the president as saying.

Mohammed Kudus is now part of the Tottenham Hotspur team Mohammed Kudus is now part of the Tottenham Hotspur team

Ghanaian International Mohammed Kudus completed a transfer from West Ham United to Tottenham Hotspur in a deal worth £55 million spread over three years.

The 24-year-old contributed 22 goal involvements scoring 13 goals and assisting 9 in his 65 appearances for the Hammers after joining from Ajax in 2023.

Tottenham unveiled their new signing on Thursday, July 10, 2025, on their social media handles with many fans excited about his arrival.

However, Kudus has revealed the reason why he signed for the North London club saying, “One of the most important parts of why I came here is the project and how the manager sees it, and to develop under him.

“With the history of where he’s come from, I’ve seen the amount of talent he’s developed to become great players. It’s a big sign of why I wanted to work under him as well.”

Kudus will wear the number 20 and work under new Tottenham coach Thomas Frank who also joined the club from Brentford to take the role of Ange Postecoglou, who was sacked after winning the Europa League.

Tottenham will look to make a statement in next season’s Premier League after finishing on a poor note last season.

South Africans fear spike in HIV infections as US aid cuts bite

0

Gugu used to collect her antiretrovirals from a USAID-funded clinic in central Johannesburg.

But when President Trump’s cuts to aid funding were announced earlier this year, she and thousands of other HIV-positive patients across South Africa suddenly faced an uncertain future.

Gugu was lucky, the clinic where she got the medication that helps suppress her symptoms contacted her before it closed down.

“I was one of the people who was able to get their medication in bulk. I usually collect a three-month prescription. But before my clinic closed, they gave me nine months’ worth of medication.”

She will run out of antiretrovirals (ARVs) in September, and then plans on going to her local public hospital for more.

A former sex worker, the 54-year-old found out she was HIV-positive after she’d quit the industry.

Ten years ago she got a chesty cough, and initially thought it was tuberculosis. She went to a doctor who told her she had a chest infection and treated her for it.

But when the treatment failed, she went to a clinic to get an HIV test.

“By then I already assumed that I was HIV-positive, and I told the nurse this.”

She was right, and she has been on ARVs ever since. We’re not using her real name at her request.

She currently works as a project coordinator for an NGO.

“We help pregnant sex workers get their ARVs, to ensure their children are born HIV-negative. We also do home visits to make sure that the mothers take their medication on time, and to look after their babies when they go for their monthly check-ups.”

Many HIV-positive sex workers in South Africa relied on private clinics funded by the US government’s now-defunct aid agency, USAID, to get their prescriptions and treatments.

But most of the facilities closed after US President Donald Trump cut most foreign aid earlier this year.

Gugu believes that many sex workers could be discouraged from going to public hospitals for their ARVs if they can no longer get them from clinics.

“The problem with going to public hospitals is the time factor. In order to get serviced at these facilities, you have to arrive at 4 or 5am, and they may spend the whole day waiting for their medication. For sex workers, time is money,” Gugu says.

She adds that she recently went to her local hospital with some friends to register her details and build a relationship with staff.

“The nurse who attended to us was very rude. She told us there was nothing special about sex workers.”

She thinks this could lead to many sex workers defaulting on their medication, “especially because their hospital files contain a lot of personal information, and the concern is that sometimes the nurses at these local clinics aren’t always the most sensitive in dealing with this kind of information”.

In a report released on Thursday, the UN body in charge of fighting HIV/Aids does not single out the US, but says that drastic cuts from a number of donors have sent shockwaves around the world, that the “phenomenal progress” in tackling the illness risks being reversed.

“New HIV infections have been reduced by 40% since 2010, and 4.4 million children have been protected from acquiring HIV since 2000. More than 26 million lives have been saved,” UNAids says, warning that if the world does not act, there could be an extra six million new HIV infections and four million Aids-related deaths by 2029.

UNAids said that, before the funding cuts, the annual numbers of new HIV infections and Aids-related deaths had sunk to their lowest levels in more than 30 years.

All of the data published in the report is from before the US and other donors slashed funding earlier this year. But it does highlight how much progress could be lost as a result of these cuts.

Sub-Saharan Africa has seen a 56% decline in the number of new infections. The region is still the epicentre of the epidemic – half of all new infections last year were from the continent. But four African countries – Lesotho, Malawi, Rwanda and Zimbabwe – were on track to achieve a 90% decline in new infections by 2030 compared with 2010.

Another success story for Africa has been the performance of antiretrovirals, which help suppress HIV symptoms. Along with other medical advances in the field, they helped increase life in sub-Saharan Africa from 56 years in 2010 to 62 years in 2024.

The turnaround began when then-US President George W Bush launched an ambitious programme to combat HIV/Aids in 2003, saying it would serve the “strategic and moral interests” of the US.

Known as the President’s Emergency Plan for Aids Relief (Pepfar), it led to the investment of more than $100bn (£74bn) in the global HIV/Aids response – the largest commitment by any nation to address a single disease in the world.

South Africa has about 7.7 million people living with HIV, the highest number in the world, according to UNAids.

About 5.9 million of them receive antiretroviral treatment, resulting in a 66% decrease in Aids-related deaths since 2010, the UN agency adds.

South Africa’s government says Pepfar funding contributed about 17% to its HIV/Aids programme. The money was used for various projects, including running mobile clinics to make it easier for patients to get treatment.

The Trump administration’s cuts have raised concern that infection rates could spike again.

“I think we’re going to start seeing an increase in the number of HIV infections, the number of TB cases, the number of other infectious diseases,” Prof Lynn Morris, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Johannesburg’s Wits University, tells the BBC.

“And we’re going to start seeing a reversal of what was essentially a real success story. We were getting on top of some of these things.”

Gugu points out that treatment is a matter of life and death, especially for vulnerable populations like sex workers.

“People don’t want to default on their ARVs. They’re scared that they’re going to die if they don’t get access to them.

The cuts have also affected research aimed at finding an HIV vaccine and a cure for Aids.

“There’s the long-term impact, which is that we’re not going to be getting new vaccines for HIV,” Prof Morris adds.

“We’re not going to be keeping on top of viruses that are circulating. Even with new viruses that might appear, we’re not going to have the surveillance infrastructure that we once had.”

South Africa has been one of the global leaders in HIV research. Many of the medications that help prevent the virus, and which have benefitted people around the world, were trialled in South Africa.

This includes Prep (pre-exposure prophylaxis), a medication which stops HIV-negative people from catching the virus.

Another breakthrough preventive drug released this year, Lenacapavir, an injection taken twice a year and that offers total protection from HIV, was also tried in South Africa.

In a lab at Wits University’s Health Sciences campus, a small group of scientists are still working on a vaccine for HIV.

They are part of the Brilliant Consortium, a group of labs working across eight African countries to develop a vaccine for the virus.

“We were developing a vaccine test to see how well that works, and then we would trial it on humans,” Abdullah Ely, an Associate Professor at Wits University, tells the BBC in his lab.

“The plan was to run the trials in Africa based on research carried out by Africans because we want that research to actually benefit our community as well as all mankind.”

But the US funding cuts threw their work into doubt.

“When the stop order came, it meant we had to stop everything. Only some of us have been able to get additional funding so we could continue our work. It’s set us back months, probably could even be a year,” Prof Ely says.

The lab lacks funding to carry out clinical trials scheduled for later this year.

“That is a very big loss to South Africa and the continent. It means that any potential research that comes out of Africa will have to be tested in Europe, or the US,” Prof Ely says.

In June, universities asked the government for a bailout of 4.6bn South African rand ($260m; £190m) over the next three years to cover some of the funding lost from the US.

“We are pleading for support because South Africa is leading in HIV research, but it’s not leading for itself. This has ramifications on the practice and policies of the entire globe,” says Dr Phethiwe Matutu, head of Universities South Africa.

South Africa’s Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi announced on Wednesday that some alternative funding for research had been secured.

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the Wellcome Trust have agreed to donate 100m rand each with immediate effect, while the government would make available 400m rand over the next three years, he said.

This would bring the total to 600m rand, way below the 4.6bn rand requested by researchers.

As for Gugu, she had hoped that by the time she was elderly, a cure for HIV/Aids would have been found, but she is less optimistic now.

“I look after a nine-year-old. I want to live as long as I can to keep taking care of him,” she tells the BBC.

“This isn’t just a problem for right now, we have to think about how it’s going to affect the next generation of women and young people.”

Minority condemns violence, police inaction in Ablekuma North rerun

0

The Minority Caucus in Parliament has bemoaned what it describes as widespread acts of violence and lawlessness that disrupted today’s parliamentary rerun election across 19 polling stations in the Ablekuma North Constituency.

In a statement signed by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Caucus accused members of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) of inciting and perpetrating violent acts.

It specifically named Malik Basintale, Deputy National Communications Officer, and Mustapha Gbande, Deputy General Secretary, as key instigators caught on video directing and encouraging the disturbances.

“Their actions, and the justifications being offered by other NDC leaders, are a direct attack on our democratic process,” the statement read. “These acts are depriving the people of Ablekuma North of their constitutional right to representation.”

Among the incidents cited were physical assaults on New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie, former Fisheries Minister Hawa Koomson, and former MP Darkoa Newman at the St. Peter’s Polling Station. A reporter from the EIB Network, Banahene Agyekum, was also allegedly slapped by a police officer while covering events at North Odorkor 2.

The Caucus further accused the Ghana Police Service of complicity, claiming officers stood by as the violence unfolded, despite earlier warnings of possible disruptions. It called for investigations into the police conduct and the incidents reported.

Another flashpoint occurred at Awoshie DVLA Polling Station, where individuals dressed as security personnel were arrested for failing to produce identification. Additionally, clashes between NDC supporters and the police at Asiedu Gyedu Memorial School 1 heightened tensions and disrupted voting.

Chris Lloyd Nii Kwei Asamoah, Deputy National Organiser of the NPP, was also reportedly assaulted.

The Minority also took issue with the presence of the Ministers for the Interior and Defence at various polling stations, describing it as a “public gimmick” meant to conceal their inaction.

Beyond the physical confrontations, the Caucus reiterated its objection to the Electoral Commission’s (EC) decision to rerun elections in 19 polling stations, insisting that only three were initially identified as needing collation for a final result.

The shift, they argued, raises suspicions of political manipulation.

Calling on the Ghana Police Service and the EC to act swiftly, the statement urged increased protection for voters, electoral officers, journalists, and candidates. It also called on the international community, civil society, and media to monitor developments closely.

“The continued disenfranchisement of Ablekuma North residents, who have been without parliamentary representation since January 7, 2025, is unacceptable,” it added.

The Minority concluded by affirming its commitment to justice, rule of law, and electoral integrity

Ghana, Ukraine to deepen cooperation on food security and agriculture

0

President John Dramani Mahama and his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, have agreed to deepen bilateral ties with a strong focus on agricultural and food security collaboration.

In a phone conversation held between the two leaders, both sides emphasized the need to develop joint initiatives in the agro-industrial sector.

A key outcome of the talks was an agreement to convene a ministerial-level meeting to begin practical work toward strengthening cooperation in agriculture.

President Zelenskyy revealed that a Ukrainian delegation will soon visit Ghana to explore areas of mutual interest and advance discussions. One of the major initiatives discussed was the establishment of a logistics hub for food storage in Ghana—an effort the Ukrainian leader expressed readiness to support.

The hub, once established, is expected to improve food supply chains, reduce post-harvest losses, and contribute to regional food stability, especially in West Africa.

While agriculture was the central focus, the two leaders also discussed potential cooperation in technology, particularly Ghana’s interest in Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for monitoring and securing its northern borders.

President Mahama invited Zelenskyy to visit Ghana, an invitation which was warmly received, with both leaders agreeing to meet in person in the near future to advance discussions.

Nollywood actress Lizzy Anjorin has responded forcefully to her colleague Iyabo Ojo’s recent public outcry, where the latter warned that Lizzy should be held responsible if anything were to happen to her or her children.

In a strongly worded Instagram post, Lizzy Anjorin denied the allegations and went on the offensive, accused Iyabo Ojo of orchestrating a donation scam disguised as activism.

NPP Deputy Organiser Chris Asamoah beaten to pulp during Ablekuma North polls

0

Deputy National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Chris Lloyd Nii Kwei Asamoah, was beaten by a group at the St. Peter’s Polling Station in Odorkor.

This occurred during the rerun of the 2024 parliamentary election in the Ablekuma North constituency.

The incident on Friday unfolded amid chaos as an unidentified group stormed the polling station, attacking several NPP members, including a party official.

In the footage, an initial scuffle is seen near the gate leading to the polling station.

Mr Asamoah is seen attempting to flee but is punched to the ground.

This is followed by a barrage of kicks and slaps as he is mobbed by the angry group.

The assault forced a brief halt to the voting process and caused panic among voters.

This was just one of multiple instances of violence recorded during today’s polls.

Tensions also escalated at the St. Peter’s Society Methodist Church polling station in Odorkor, part of the Ablekuma North constituency.

The electoral rerun was violently disrupted when a group of unidentified “macho men” stormed the premises in coordinated fashion, arriving in a pickup truck accompanied by multiple motorbikes, forcing panic among voters, electoral personnel and security forces.

Eye‐witnesses report that the assailants overpowered the security detail and launched an assault on several political figures, including former MP and ex‐Fisheries Minister Mavis Hawa Koomson.

Disturbing video footage shows her being forced to the ground and reportedly stomped in the chest and groin area before officers intervened.

Other victims included NPP parliamentary candidate Nana Akua Afriyie and a female party agent, both reportedly injured amid the turmoil.

Later in the morning, a JoyNews journalist was slapped and pushed by a thug.

Meanwhile, former Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has condemned the violent incidents reported during the ongoing parliamentary rerun in Ablekuma North.

Agrimercarb’s Insect Protein Innovation Safeguarding Aquaculture

0

A staff of Agrimercarb

As Ghana’s aquaculture sector expands to meet growing demand for locally produced fish, so is the soaring cost of quality fish feed. At the center of this challenge is protein meal, the most expensive component of fish feed.

Agrimercarb, a promising agritech startup supported by the Kosmos Innovation Center (KIC), is offering a game-changing solution.

Agrimercarb produces high-quality, consistent protein meal derived from black soldier fly larvae (BSFL), which are fed on locally sourced organic waste.

This innovative model not only reduces the cost of protein meal but also contributes to sustainable agriculture by turning waste into a valuable resource.

“Agrimercarb’s insect protein is a viable, eco-friendly alternative to imported fishmeal, reducing feed costs while improving fish health. By integrating frass, a nutrient-rich byproduct of BSFL, as a natural condiment in the feed, we offer farmers a product that is not only cheaper but also healthier for their fish and the environment,” says Luther Jesse Quashie, Co-founder of Agrimercarb.

Ghana’s dependence on imported fishmeal has long made the local aquaculture sector vulnerable to price fluctuations and supply chain disruptions. Agrimercarb’s localized production model provides a more stable, affordable, and sustainable supply of protein meal, enabling smallholder farmers to remain competitive.

“We are excited about Agrimercarb’s bold approach to tackling systemic challenges in aquaculture. Their work aligns perfectly with KIC’s mission to support innovative agribusinesses that are transforming food systems sustainably and inclusively, “Benjamin Gyan-Kesse, Executive Director of the Kosmos Innovation Center, expressed confidence in Agrimercarb’s potential.

With growing traction in Ghana and beyond, Agrimercarb is poised to lead a new era of sustainable aquaculture and resilient feed systems in West Africa.

Working in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation, KIC is committed to empowering young people to find innovative solutions that also create job opportunities.

Justin Bieber drops surprise new album, ‘SWAG’

0

'SWAG' is the Canadian singer’s seventh studio album, it features 21 tracks ‘SWAG’ is the Canadian singer’s seventh studio album, it features 21 tracks

Justin Bieber has sprung a surprise on fans – releasing his first new studio album in four years.

“SWAG,” the Canadian singer’s seventh studio album, features 21 tracks, including collaborations with rap artist Gunna, gospel singer Dijon, rapper Lil B, comedian Druski, rapper Sexyy Red, musician Cash Cobain and singer-songwriter Eddie Benjamin.

The album’s final song, “Forgiveness,” is performed not by Bieber but by pastor and gospel singer Marvin Winans.

Justin Bieber is seen on The Upper East Side on January 31, 2025 in New York City.

“Congratulations @lilbieber for making a wild and deeply inspiring record,” Dijon wrote in a post on Instagram Friday in which he shared the album, along with images of what appear to be recording sessions.

“Grateful to have been able to witness and be a tiny part of a beautiful thing. Humbled!” he added.

The album from Bieber, who in March shared a social media post about feeling “unworthy,” and in June posted on Instagram about being “broken,” is infused with a tone of vulnerability.

In the 14th track, “Therapy Session,” Bieber tells Druski, “I think that’s been a tough thing for me recently is feeling like, you know, I have had to go through a lot of my struggles as a human, as all of us do, really publicly. And so people are always asking if I’m okay, and that starts to really weigh on me.”

“It starts to make me feel like I’m the one with issues and everyone else is perfect,” the 31-year-old, who welcomed his first child, Jack, in August last year, went on to say.

Another track with Druski, “Standing on Business,” makes light of a video of the singer that went viral in June, in which he goes on a rant at paparazzi whom he said were trying to provoke him while he was at the beach.

In the track, Druski mocks the way Bieber maintains his flawless pronunciation of the word “business” while haranguing the paparazzi.

A trotro driver in Kumasi has sparked outrage after a video surfaced showing him driving off with a police officer from the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) clinging to the bonnet of his vehicle.

The incident, captured in a video on X on July 11,2025, shows the officer desperately holding on as the vehicle moves through traffic.

The dramatic footage has since gone viral, prompting strong reactions from the public over the growing disregard for law enforcement.

It’s unclear what led to the altercation, but the video suggests the officer had attempted to stop the driver for a traffic-related offence before the situation escalated.

Authorities are yet to issue an official statement, but the Ghana Police Service is expected to investigate the incident and identify the driver involved.

Many social media users have condemned the driver’s actions, describing them as reckless and dangerous. Others have also raised concerns about the safety and enforcement challenges faced by officers on duty.

IMF endorses ECG privatisation

0

Electricity Company of Ghana logo Electricity Company of Ghana logo

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has endorsed the liberalisation of the operations of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), the State-owned electricity distributor, for private sector participation.

The Fund is of the view that private sector participation would attract the much-needed investment and technical expertise to address legacy debts, making the energy sector financially sustainable.

This was in the IMF July country report on the fourth review of the Ghana’s US$3 billion-three-year Extended Credit Facility (ECF) arrangement, which identified the energy sector as a major source of fiscal risk.

The Electricity Company of Ghana is responsible for distributing electricity in the southern part of Ghana, covering six administrative regions: Greater Accra, Eastern, Volta, Ashanti, Western and Central.

According to the Fund, in the absence of any policy action, the annual energy sector shortfall is estimated to reach US$2.2 billion in 2025.

That reflected ECG’s large commercial and technical losses and slow electricity tariff adjustment in the face of exchange rate fluctuations and higher power generation costs, notably due to reliance on costly liquid fuels, the IMF observed.

“Staff welcomes the cabinet decision to open the electricity company’s operations to the private sector, and the efforts made towards the energy sector’s financial sustainability -including resuming the quarterly electricity tariff increases,” the Fund stated in its appraisal on the ECF programme.

The IMF observed progress in reducing the energy sector challenges including the 14.75 per cent increase in electricity tariffs in April 2025 by the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) and compliance improvement with the Cash Waterfall Mechanism somewhat in 2025.

Nonetheless, the report indicated that “some IPPs received less than expected, as fuel payments and the addition of an IPP diluted Cash Waterfall Mechanism distributions.”

There were significant deviations between ECG’s validated and declared collections (GHS5.3 billion) and between CWM allocations and actual payments (GHS3.9 billion), the report noted.

To reduce the energy sector shortfall in the short term and enhance efficiency, the Bretton Woods institution recommended a full and consistent implementation of the Cash Waterfall Mechanism.

That implies the country ensuring regular payments to Independent Power Producers (IPPs) and fuel suppliers, addressing legacy arrears, and improving transparency, governance and accountability.

The IMF urged the Government to accelerate the implementation of the Energy Sector Recovery Programme measures, including conducting a multi-year tariff assessment to reflect changes in the costs of energy production by end-September 2025, enhance revenue collection and limit arrears accumulation.

In an earlier interview with the Ghana News Agency, Nana Amoasi VII, the Executive Director, Institute for Energy Security, said privatisation could bring in expertise, investment, and efficiency improvements that are needed to address infrastructure challenges and improve service delivery in the power sector.

Referring to the 2019 failed agreement with Power Distribution Services (PDS), he called for a well-designed, transparent, and best practices to avoid the pitfalls experienced in the past deal.

The failure of PDS to achieve certain pre-conditions led to the country missing some US$190 million in investment under the second tranche of the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) power compact.

Alice Albright, Chief Executive Officer of MCC, on Thursday, May 9, 2024, stated that the Corporation had no immediate plans, but remained opened to working with Ghana for long-term sustainability of related infrastructure and financial recovery in the energy sector.

Asante Kotoko investigating Justice Blay’s controversial comments

The club expressed disappointment with the nature of Blay's accusations The club expressed disappointment with the nature of Blay’s accusations

Asante Kotoko have begun internal investigations into allegations made by former midfielder Justice Blay, who accused teammate Kwame Opoku of a personal betrayal involving his girlfriend.

The club has described the claims as troubling and unexpected, confirming steps are being taken to verify the facts.

Speaking to Luv FM, Communications Director Sarfo Duku expressed the club’s disappointment with the nature of the accusations, particularly given Blay’s previous standing with the team.

“Justice Blay’s comment is very unfortunate, it was the least expected of him. As a club, we are looking at the whole issue, we are investigating it, and we may come out officially at the appropriate time,” he stated.

Blay, who was released in June 2025 after being informed he was not part of Kotoko’s plans for the upcoming season, alleged in a Pure FM interview that Opoku had secretly dated his girlfriend after being introduced to her.

He claimed the betrayal strained their relationship in camp, despite efforts to maintain professionalism on the pitch.

The midfielder also said some teammates frequently smoked “shisha” in the clubhouse, claims that have added to growing concerns about discipline within the squad.

Arrest warrants issued for Togolese instigators

Togolese government officials addressing the media Togolese government officials addressing the media

In response to calls for insurrection and disinformation campaigns launched from abroad, the Togolese government convened national and international media on July 9 in Lomé.

The objective was clear: to present the facts, identify those responsible, and reaffirm its determination to protect republican institutions against any form of subversion, including those taking place in the digital space.

The illegal demonstrations that occurred in June served as a springboard for certain bloggers to ignite social media. Through violent messages filled with vulgar and offensive language, these individuals targeted the country’s leaders, with particular virulence directed at the President of the Council, Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé.

“The instigators and accomplices of these calls to destabilize the institutions of the Republic will be pursued to their last hideouts and punished in accordance with the law,” declared the Minister of Security and Civil Protection, Colonel Calixte Madjoulba, during the press conference.

According to members of the government, most of the individuals behind these calls reside abroad, notably in France. Through inflammatory rhetoric, they urged the population, especially the youth, to overthrow the constitutional order, attack the symbols of the Republic and state authorities, take to the streets, vandalize public property, confront law enforcement, and in extreme cases, even take the lives of those who support the legitimate government.

“These calls to violence, repeatedly circulated on TikTok, Facebook, and WhatsApp, were disseminated in a coordinated and targeted manner, with the sole aim of sowing fear, chaos, and division,” emphasized one of the ministers present.

During the conference, several video clips illustrating these incitements were shown. The authorities highlighted the active role played by each blogger or influencer involved, through aggressive and hate-driven digital campaigns.

Government officials unanimously condemned these attempts to incite public disorder and denounced the misuse of human rights rhetoric as a tool for destabilization. They also warned against the spread of fake news, manipulated content and fabricated videos, all contributing to widespread and deliberate disinformation.

They criticized a segment of civil society accused of intentionally distorting facts, notably by falsely attributing deaths to the security forces. The Minister of Security praised the professionalism of the law enforcement agencies, which, according to him, effectively contained the unrest and prevented the instigators from carrying out their plans to plunge the country into chaos.

A Warning…

The illegal and violent demonstrations that marred several days in June 2025 were not without consequences. Multiple authoritative voices have called on the government to fully assume its sovereign duty to protect citizens, regardless of the source or nature of the threat.

These voices also warned against the growing risk of digital tools being weaponized as a means of destabilization. In this context, any act of defiance against legitimate authority must be swiftly identified, discouraged, and punished with the utmost severity.

Held under the banner of transparency and public accountability, the press briefing was led by four members of the government: Minister of Security and Civil Protection Colonel Calixte Madjoulba; Minister of Territorial Administration Hodabalo Awaté; Minister of Human Rights Adjéoda Adjourouvi; and Minister of Technical Education Kokou Tchikpé.

Together, they presented the facts, clarified responsibilities, and reiterated the state’s unwavering commitment to defending the republican order against all forms of aggression, including those propagated online.

NPP wants to mar the beauty of the voting process, NDC not involved in violence – Tanko Computer

0

Deputy Director of Elections and IT for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Rashid Tanko Computer, has accused the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of entering the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun with intention to disrupt the electoral process rather than engage in a fair contest.

Speaking on The Pulse on JoyNews, Mr. Tanko said the voting had so far been smooth, but claimed intelligence gathered by the NDC pointed to deliberate attempts by the NPP to undermine the process.

“Everything is going on smoothly. Like I told you this morning, as of yesterday, we knew that the NPP is coming into this election not to contest, but to mar the beauty of the rerun – just to mar the whole process. That is what their intention is.”

He raised concerns over what he described as unnecessary spending by the NPP candidate, questioning the sudden mobilization of large sums of money shortly before the polls.

“Look, as of yesterday evening-less than 12 hours to the election—she [the NPP candidate] mobilized not less than one million Ghana cedis. What is she going to use the money for? Your guess is as good as mine.”

“People who have defied the orders of their national executive are being beaten here and there. Intelligence we picked shows that their own party people are beating them because they disobeyed party orders and decided to contest.”

He was quick to distance the NDC from any such acts of violence, insisting that their members had conducted themselves in a disciplined and lawful manner throughout the election.

“All our party people, I can assure you, are disciplined. They know what is expected of them because we are winning the seat. That is why we’ve put these things together.”

He emphasized that any disruptions reported at polling stations were likely a result of internal NPP tensions, not the actions of the NDC.

“ I know the NDC is not involved in this at all.”

Forestry guard goes missing in Nkwanta South

0

A 37-year old forestry guard, Daniel Obeng, has gone missing in the Nkwanta South Municipality of the Oti Region.

Information gathered by the Ghana News Agency (GNA), reveals Mr. Obeng was last seen on July 4, 2025, after being transferred from Nkwanta township to Tutukpene, a suburb of Nkwanta South.

GNA gathered that the victim joined the Forestry Service Commission in 2012 and had previously worked at Brewaniase and Bontibo, cocoa farming communities in Nkwanta South.

Mr. Obeng was known for his tireless work ethic and had recently been transferred to his new jurisdiction, where relatives, friends and colleagues have not been able to contact him.

Colleagues who wished to remain anonymous, disclosed that they were with him on the day of his arrival at Tutukpene, however, the following day, they went to his house and found the room half-open with an MP3 player playing music inside.

They said upon knocking and receiving no response, they waited for several hours, thinking he might have stepped out. However, when he failed to return, they entered the community to search for him but could not find him.

In an exclusive interview with the GNA, Mr. Christian Obeng, father of the forestry guard, expressed his unwavering faith that his son is alive.

Mr. Obeng described his son as a young gentleman with dark complexion, and not too short in stature.

He urged anyone who finds a person matching that description to kindly alert the police, assembly members and traditional authorities.

“I believe my son is alive, Obeng is not dead, I trust in God, I will surely see my son.”

The GNA’s engagement with the Nkwanta south Forestry Manager, Mr. Isaac Boamah Amanquah, confirmed that the missing guard has a history of bipolar disorder.

He explained that Mr. Obeng’s condition required medical attention and whenever symptoms arise, he was given medication to stabilize his brain.

He revealed that some community members reported spotting the guard on July 5, 2025, at about 0500 hours to 0600 hours taking a walk on a farm path.

Mr. Amanquah stated that after Daniel’s disappearance, an official complaint was lodged with the Nkwanta south District Police Command and extract was subsequently issued for radio publicity to aid in the search efforts.

He said despite the reported sighting, search parties have been unable to locate him.

Meanwhile, the search efforts, which began on July 6, 2025, are still underway.

Odorkor Methodist Church considers ditching poll centre role over violence

0

St. Peter’s Methodist Church in Odorkor is seriously considering withdrawing its premises as a collation centre for future elections, citing significant safety concerns and property damage inflicted during the volatile Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun on Friday, July 11.

The decision by the church leadership underscores the escalating challenges faced by public and private institutions that offer their spaces for Ghana’s electoral processes, often bearing the brunt of political tensions.

Rev. Ebenezer Kofi, the church’s overseer, confirmed the contemplation of this drastic step, expressing deep distress over the events that marred the rerun.

His announcement highlights a growing disillusionment among community institutions that provide vital support for Ghana’s democracy but often receive little protection or compensation when violence erupts.

Friday’s rerun in Ablekuma North, held across 19 polling stations to resolve a protracted electoral dispute from the December 7, 2024, general elections, was fraught with tension from the outset.

Their forceful entry disrupted the voting process, causing widespread panic among voters and leading to a temporary suspension of polling.

The assailants violently assaulted key figures of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), including the party’s parliamentary candidate, Nana Akua Afriyie, and former Fisheries Minister Hawa Koomson.

Eyewitnesses described the incident as “well-coordinated and deliberate”, suggesting premeditation rather than spontaneous unrest.

Police struggled to restore order, further emphasising the challenges in controlling politically motivated violence at polling centres.

Speaking in an interview with Citi News on Saturday, July 12, Rev. Kofi articulated the church’s resolve.

“A decision has to be taken by the leadership of the church where we will take the collation centre from here, and by extension, we will take the polling station from here to prevent further incidents,” he stated, indicating a broad consensus within the church leadership.

He confirmed that the church intends to formally request the Electoral Commission (EC) and security agencies to relocate both the collation centre and the nearby police post from the church premises.

Rev. Kofi also shed light on the cumulative impact of hosting electoral activities, revealing that the December 2024 general elections had also left a trail of damage at the church, yet the EC had offered no compensation.

“Most of our assets were vandalised and destroyed because of the collation… even yesterday I was told that the residence of one of the ministers was also damaged,” he lamented.

This lack of redress for damages often deters institutions from offering their facilities in subsequent elections, potentially forcing the EC to use less suitable venues.

The incident in Ablekuma North is not an isolated one but forms part of a worrying trend of increasing electoral violence in Ghana.

The 2020 general elections, for instance, were marred by multiple incidents of violence that resulted in at least eight fatalities, prompting widespread calls for accountability that largely remain unanswered.

The December 2024 elections also saw at least six deaths, alongside numerous reports of assaults on journalists and political figures.

Organisations like the Ghana Centre for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana) and the Institute for War and Peace Reporting (IWPR) have consistently highlighted the entrenched nature of electoral violence and the prevailing culture of impunity.

Despite the NPP officially boycotting the rerun, its candidate, Nana Akua Afriyie, defied the party’s directive and contested the election.

She ultimately lost to Ewurabena Aubynn of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) by a narrow margin.

The rerun’s outcome shifts the balance of power in parliament, but the violence that accompanied it leaves a deeper scar on Ghana’s democratic fabric.

The incident at St. Peter’s Methodist Church in Odorkor serves as a potent reminder of the need for the Electoral Commission, political parties, and security agencies to proactively safeguard electoral venues and ensure accountability for violence.

Without robust measures to protect these critical democratic spaces and compensate for damages, the integrity and accessibility of Ghana’s electoral process remain at risk.

King Paluta is strong-headed, he is known for things like that

DJ Slim described King Paluta as 'strong headed' DJ Slim described King Paluta as ‘strong headed’

Ghanaian DJ and industry insider DJ Slim has lambasted rapper King Paluta following the latter’s explosive outburst at a recent event in London.

Paluta’s performance at the All‑White Boat Party turned sour when, during his set at the high-profile party, Paluta reportedly became agitated when a guest appeared unresponsive to his performance.

In a viral video, the Aseda hitmaker was seen angrily berating the attendee, claiming he needed to “free his mind.”

The incident drew swift criticism, with media critic Bullgod highlighting how Paluta’s underground roots made the display especially disappointing.

In an interview on GhanaWeb’s X spaces on July 11, 2025, DJ Slim slammed Paluta’s behaviour and described it as “way above the line.”

Slim, who has had a personal relationship with King Paluta, described the artiste as someone known to be “strong-headed,” narrating an incident in Kumasi even before his rise to fame.

“He is quite known for these things, he is very strong-headed, even before he got hit songs like Makoma and Aseda. He was like that.

“There was an issue in Kumasi when he was billed to perform. He didn’t show up and the frustrated fans decided to ransack the equipment of the media house and the organisers. The issue got back to me and when I reached out, he said he would not apologise or address the issue,” he said.

Addressing the incident, DJ Slim said, “Right now we are not on talking terms… I know he is strong-headed, but this is way above the line.”

Slim further expressed concern that Paluta’s recently acquired fame may be fueling erratic behavior.

“I have dealt with artistes from the group up, and some of these things are as a result of fame. People experience fame for the first time and cannot handle it… we can only pray for him,” he added.

He further expressed fears that the artiste may not have anyone to guide him since he has “disrespected his godfathers” in the industry.

“Because as it stands now, I do not know anybody who can sit him down and talk to him. Because most of his godfathers, he has disrespected them, so I do not know who can talk to him,” he said.

The incident has prompted outcry on social media, with many accusing Paluta of straying from professionalism and respect.

Meanwhile, King Plauta nor his management have addressed the incident.

Justice Blay issues apology after explosive claims about former kotoko teammates

0

Justice Blay in one of the games for Kumasi Asante Kotoko Justice Blay in one of the games for Kumasi Asante Kotoko

Former Asante Kotoko midfielder Justice Blay has issued a formal apology following his explosive comments made during a live interview on Pure FM Sports, where he accused former teammates of misconduct and made several personal revelations.

In the now-viral interview, Blay alleged that Guinean midfielder Camara Mohammed “snatched” his girlfriend, a situation he said led to a police case after confronting the woman.

He further claimed that striker Kwame Opoku also took over another romantic partner he had introduced to him. Blay didn’t stop there, naming Joseph Ablor and Camara Mohammed again, this time accusing them of smoking shisha, as he pushed back against claims that he was the only player at the club with off-field issues.

Amid public backlash and growing criticism from fans and observers, Blay released an official apology on Friday, July 11, 2025, through the JBlay Foundation. In the statement, he admitted that his remarks were made in a moment clouded by deep personal emotions following his departure from the club.

“Upon reflection, I recognise that my words may have caused disappointment or offense to the club, my former teammates, the passionate supporters, and specific individuals whose names were mentioned,” the statement read.

Blay went on to express his “sincerest and unreserved apology” to Asante Kotoko SC, its management, technical team, players, and fans. He stressed that it was never his intention to tarnish the club’s image or undermine the contributions of those he worked with.

He acknowledged that his emotions got the better of him during the interview and took “full responsibility” for his words. “This experience has served as a powerful reminder of the values of emotional discipline, humility, and maturity—on and off the pitch,” he added.

Mother mourns ‘beautiful’ 12-year-old shot while watching TV during Kenya protests

0

On Monday, as anti-government protests swept across parts of Kenya, 12-year-old Bridgit Njoki sat watching television in her family’s modest home.

She had no idea that the deadly clashes between these protesters and Kenya’s armed police would find their way into her living room.

A single bullet pierced the roof, puncturing the ceiling and striking Njoki in the head, her mother, Lucy Ngugi, tells the BBC. Within hours, she was pronounced dead in hospital.

“She was my everything,” Ms Ngugi says, while sobbing in her home just outside the capital, Nairobi. “She was all I had.”

“Let me be the last mother to weep because of the death of a child. An innocent child. I wish she was even playing outside… but inside the house? Oh Lord, this is painful.”

Njoki is one of the youngest victims of the violence that has rocked Kenya over the past month. According to the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR), almost 70 people have died and hundreds were wounded in the three major protests that have taken place since 17 June.

The protests – mainly led by young Kenyans – reflect growing discontent over issues like the cost of living, tax hikes, runaway public debt, and police brutality.

On 7 July, the day Njoki died, the authorities barricaded major roads in preparation for the demonstrations.

Video evidence shows the police firing tear gas, and in some cases, live rounds in residential areas where protesters had regrouped.

“The bullet came over the roof of the house. It penetrated into the ceiling, right where Njoki was seated on a chair,” says Njoki’s grandmother, Margaret Njeri.

“Immediately, her mother grabbed her and came screaming to my home: ‘Mum, my child has been shot!’ I couldn’t even hold the child.”

The family had thought they were far from the violent clashes, given they lived in Ndumberi, a village nearly two kilometres (1.2 miles) from a main road.

“I was sure it was a bullet,” says Njoki’s mother. “The bang that hit the roof was so loud. Very loud.”

The police have dismissed the family’s claims, insisting a bullet couldn’t travel from the main road to their house. But Njoki’s lifeless body told a different story.

A report from the 12-year-old’s post-mortem examination says doctors retrieved a bullet from her body, and that her head injury was “consistent with a gunshot”.

Njoki had been a Grade 7 student at Benson Njau School in Ting’ang’a, a nearby village. As the family’s firstborn, she was a caretaker, helper, and the pride of the household.

“She was always number one in her class,” her grandmother says. “So obedient, so specific, so neat.

“Even in the way she spoke. She was just a very good girl. She loved serving in church. She helped her siblings. She cooked for me. She was everything.”

Njoki’s mother describes her as “a beautiful girl, a charming girl, who had so many dreams”.

Her father is crushed, unable to speak. Her siblings are also silent. Grief hangs like a shroud in the house, while Njoki’s chair sits empty.

The deaths of dozens like Njoki have drawn international condemnation.

The UN said it was deeply troubled by the killings and criticised the Kenyan police for using “lethal ammunition” against protesters.

This all feels like a repeat of last year, when according to the KNCHR, more than 50 died in a police crackdown on months of anti-government protests.

President Ruto has taken a particularly hard-line stance this time.

In a national address following the 7 July protests, in which 38 people were killed, according to the state-run human rights commission, Ruto said: “Anyone caught burning another person’s business or property should be shot in the leg, hospitalised and later taken to court. Don’t kill them, but ensure their legs are broken.”

Ruto has accused political rivals of inciting violence in a bid to unseat him illegally, but the president’s opponents have dismissed this allegation.

Meanwhile, back in Ndumberi, Njoki’s family are simply calling for an end to the brutality.

“I’ll bury Njoki, but I’ll never forget the Saba Saba Day [7 July]. Let Njoki be the last sacrifice of these protests,” her mother says.

The ongoing anti-government protest movement has reshaped Kenyan politics. It has demanded transparency, empathy and a listening ear. But it has also paid in blood.

And as the uprising continues, Njoki’s name and those of many others lost have become a symbol – of innocence, state overreach, and a lack of accountability.

“Let’s not burn our country. Let’s have a dialogue. Let’s talk. We are brothers and sisters, I’m begging our government – let this not happen to any other parent,” Njoki’s mother says.

“Don’t let another child die like Njoki.”

Adutwum condemns violence, urges swift probe

0

Bosomtwe Member of Parliament (MP), Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, has condemned the violent incidents that marred the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun on Friday, July 11, 2025.

Citing the assaults on former Awutu Senya East MP Mavis Hawa Koomson and journalists, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful said it was “deeply regrettable” and a serious threat to Ghana’s democracy.

“This recurring cycle of electoral violence must come to an end and be consigned to the dark days of our past.

“As a country committed to democratic governance, we must prioritise the peace and stability of our nation above all other partisan and self-interests,” he stated.

He warned that Ghana’s hard-won democratic gains must not be reversed by what he described as acts of political aggression and intolerance.

Reflecting on the recent election outcome, Dr. Adutwum said it should serve as a reminder to all political stakeholders that power must be earned through ballots, not intimidation.

“The overwhelming political victory that Ghanaians bestowed on President Mahama should be a testament that, as a people, we should not use electoral violence to settle past political scores,” he said.

He urged the Interior Minister, Muntaka Mubarak, to initiate a comprehensive investigation into the incidents and ensure those responsible are held accountable.

“Accountability is critical if we are to restore public confidence and deter future acts of electoral violence,” he stressed.

Dr. Adutwum concluded with a call for national unity and a renewed commitment to peace, law, and democratic principles.

‎PRESS STATEMENT

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

STATEMENT BY DR. YAW OSEI ADUTWUM, NEW PATRIOTIC PARTY FLAGBEARER HOPEFUL, ON THE VIOLENCE THAT MARRED ABLEKUMA NORTH RE-RUN

I wish to express, in the strongest possible terms, my condemnation of the acts of violence that marred the just-concluded Ablekuma North re-run

The brutal assault on the former Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, Hon. Mavis Hawa Koomson and a journalist from the EIB Network is not only deeply regrettable but also a threat to our democratic values.

This recurring cycle of electoral violence must come to an end and be consigned to the dark days of our past. As a country committed to democratic governance, we must prioritize the peace and stability of our nation above all other partisan and self-interests.

The collective efforts we have made over the years to build a strong and united Ghana should not be undone by acts of political intolerance, aggression, and violence.

The overwhelming political victory that Ghanaians bestowed on President Mahama should be a testament that, as a people, we should not use electoral violence to settle past political scores. Our deepened contemporary political credentials as a nation should teach us to come to terms with the fact that it is high time we kept our past political differences at bay and adopted values that will unite us as a people.

I urge all Ghanaians to remember that we are, first and foremost, one people. Political competition must never come at the expense of human dignity and life.

Our desire to see our respective parties succeed must not translate into violence or injury against fellow citizens.

Accordingly, I call on the Hon. Minister for the Interior to, as a matter of urgency, initiate a thorough investigation into the incidents of violence and ensure that the perpetrators are identified and brought to justice.

Accountability is critical if we are to restore public confidence and deter future acts of electoral violence.

Let us work together to preserve the peace, uphold the rule of law, and safeguard the democratic values that form the bedrock of our Republic.

We Need Ablekuma Seat To Put NDC On Their Toes – Titus Glover

0

Daniel Nii Kwartei Titus Glover

The former Greater Accra Regional Minister under the erstwhile NPP government, Daniel Nii Kwartei Titus Glover says the NPP “needs to win the Ablekuma North seat” contrary to the party’s announcement of withdrawing from the race earlier.

Daniel Nii Kwartei Titus Glover who served as a member of Parliament for Tema East said this in an interview with the media at the Presby Church polling station at the Ablekuma North Constituency.

“We can’t compromise this seat, our people need to come out and vote to enable Akua Afriyie to be in parliament to support the work of the Minority leader to put the NDC on their toes,” he said.

He also mentioned that additional seats would provide them with an opportunity to prepare ahead of the 2028 general election.

“The NDC came to power with deceit, they are doing the opposite of all the things that they said they would do,” he said.

Although he was hopeful that the Parliamentary candidate of the NPP, Akua Owusu Afriyie, would emerge the winner at the end of the polls, he said the party will accept the outcome of the results if the NDC’s Parliamentary candidate also wins.

Ablekuma North rerun: NDC didn’t deploy macho men

0

Rashid Tanko-Computer, Deputy Director of Elections and IT for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has denied allegations that the party deployed macho men during the parliamentary rerun in the Ablekuma North constituency.

His comments come in the wake of a violent incident at the St. Peter’s Society polling station on Friday, July 11, when a group of unidentified men stormed the centre, attacking voters and election officials and forcing a temporary suspension of voting.

Among those assaulted were the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) parliamentary candidate, Nana Akua Afriyie, and former Fisheries Minister, Mavis Hawa Koomson.

Citi News journalist Jude Duncan confirmed that both women were physically assaulted, prompting the deployment of additional security personnel to restore order. Voting resumed shortly afterward under tight security.

Speaking to Citi News’ Hanson Agyemang after the declaration of results, Rashid Tanko rejected the claims linking the NDC to the violence.

“What is the illegality here? NDC has not deployed any macho men anywhere; we have full confidence in the state security. We won the election on the basis of our track record,” He stated.

He emphasised that it is the responsibility of the security agencies to investigate and address the violent incidents, adding, “That falls within their domain.”

The Electoral Commission conducted the rerun in 19 polling stations to resolve a longstanding electoral dispute following the December 7, 2024, general elections. The NDC’s Ewurabena Aubynn was declared winner of the contest.

This marks the first time since 1992 that the governing party has claimed the traditionally New Patriotic Party (NPP) held seat, following years of political dominance by the opposition party.

The rerun, conducted in 19 polling stations, brought finality to months of legal and electoral disputes stemming from the December 7, 2024, general election.

After Friday’s rerun, NDC’s Ewurabena Aubynn polled 34, 090 votes while NPP’s Akua Afriyie polled 33, 881 votes.

Police reviews operational capacity to combat Cybercrime and emerging security threats

0

In recent years, Ghana has witnessed a surge in cyber-related offenses, as well as organized robbery syndicates, posing fresh challenges to national security and public safety.

To address this, the Police Administration has initiated a comprehensive review of its operational capacity to effectively respond to rising sophisticated crimes such as cyber fraud, armed robbery, and other emerging security threats.

As part of the strategy, the Service is placing renewed emphasis on professional development, specialized training, and orientation for both new recruits and existing officers.

The review process includes tactical training, cybercrime investigation modules, intelligence gathering techniques, and the use of modern surveillance tools.

According to Commissioner of Police (CoP) Asumadu Okyere-Darko, the Director-General, Police Professional Standard Bureau, the review aims at equipping personnel with modern policing techniques and digital forensics skills to stay ahead of evolving criminal activities.

He stated these on Friday at the passing-out parade of the third batch recruits of the Regional Police Training School – Kenyasi, where a total of 239, including 25 cardet officers, passed out.

CoP Okyere-Darko noted that the nature of crime is changing rapidly and criminals are becoming more organized and technologically inclined, so their officers must evolve too.

The Director-General said the police administration is collaborating with local and international institutions to ensure its personnel are not only technically capable but also ethically grounded.

He reiterated the commitment of the service to maintaining law and order, assuring the public that it is poised to restore confidence through proactive policing and strategic reforms.

Dr Ebenezer Kwaku Addo, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Asutifi North Constituency, in his congratulatory message, urged the recruits to be good ambassadors of the service in contributing their quota to ensuring law and order in society.

He expressed gratitude to the Kenyasi No. 1 Traditional Council (KTC), presided over by Nana Osei Kofi Abiri, the Paramount Chief, for their massive investment in infrastructure and human resource development of the training school.

“They could have channeled their resources to other sectors of society but in collaboration with Newmont Ahafo Development Foundation, the school was built from scratch to its present state” the MP indicated.

General Constable Mattew Ediaba Mensah, the overall best recruit of the batch, on behalf of the recruits, assured their readiness to serve Ghana with humility, love and integrity to ensure the safety of residents and property.

He stated that “we are not going out there to impose our authority on the people through harassment and intimidation. Policing is our joy and passion. We will serve with dignity”.

GHAMRO, Apprise Team Up For Artist Rights

0

The Ghana Rights Organisation (GHAMRO) is in talks with Apprise , a leading digital music distribution company, to form a strategic partnership. The two organisations aim to strengthen metadata infrastructure, copyright education, and artist welfare systems in Ghana.

The meeting, which took place at Apprise ’s headquarters in Accra, brought together GHAMRO’s CEO and senior delegates for a closed-door session with Apprise’s leadership team, led by Founder and Director Michael Bamfo.

The proposed partnership would cover joint seminars, shared consultation and referral mechanisms for artist issues, and coordinated media communication. They also plan to work together on royalty collection drives, policy review meetings, and advocacy for artist rights protection.

Also on the table include ongoing collaboration initiatives such as royalty collection drives, periodic policy review meetings, and joint advocacy to amplify government attention on copyright enforcement and artist rights protection.

Michael Bamfo, Founder of Apprise , said, “This is not just a handshake. It’s a strategic alignment between rights management and digital distribution — two pillars that must work together to protect artists and restore value to their work. We’re excited about the possibilities.”

GHAMRO provided clarity on the organisation’s role as the statutory body responsible for collecting and distributing royalties to Ghanaian music rights holders, including composers, publishers, performers, and producers. GHAMRO also oversees compliance with copyright legislation and engages in public education on intellectual property.

The collaboration, if finalised, is expected to streamline metadata accuracy, catalog integrity, and rights attribution — longstanding challenges in the Ghanaian music ecosystem that have undermined royalty payouts and international monetisation.

Apprise , one of Ghana’s fastest-growing music and media companies, offers digital distribution, IP education, artist incubation, and metadata services to both independent artists and labels. The company currently works with legacy catalogs from Amakye Dede, Afro Moses, MUSIGA, and GAPI, and emerging artists including Rama Blak, Abbi Ima, King Eazie, and many more.

A formal agreement is expected to be signed in the coming weeks, with a joint roadmap already being drafted. Both parties have committed to sharing the partnership’s progress with the public and stakeholders through coordinated media releases and public engagement campaigns.

This collaboration signals a broader trend of alignment between digital music platforms and rights organisations across Africa, as the continent’s music industry seeks to professionalise and scale.

Providing transport support to voters does not constitute vote-buying – Minister

0

Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Ocloo, has dismissed allegations that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for Ablekuma North, Ewurabena Aubynn, is engaging in vote-buying during the ongoing rerun elections.

Speaking to Citi News, Madam Ocloo justified what critics describe as “vote-buying,” insisting that providing transportation money—commonly known as “T&T”—to voters is a longstanding practice and not a form of inducement.

“People have to come and vote, so if such people come, you have to give them the T&T to go and vote. I do not think that is vote buying,” she said. “If you think that is vote buying, you can also go and buy their vote. It’s as simple as that.”

The Shai Osudoku MP explained that the support is targeted at known party loyalists who have already committed to voting for the NDC.

“If someone is loyal to you, why wouldn’t such a person vote for you with or without money? I do not think giving the person transportation is going to affect the integrity,” she noted.

According to Madam Ocloo, she shared her contact details on radio and received several calls from voters—some from as far as Tarkwa and Kumasi—seeking help to travel to their polling stations.

“I told them that when they come, they should give me a call for their T&T. We are not giving out money. I am saying that we are supporting them with their T&T,” she emphasized.

She further questioned the logic behind the allegations: “When someone calls you, saying that he or she doesn’t have money for transportation, and I tell them to hail a car and I will pay, is that vote buying?”

“If the person is from the NPP, I do not think such a person will call me for obvious reasons. It means such a person is already aligned with us. And equally, in the NPP, people call them for money for T&T,” she added.

The Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun is underway in 19 polling stations following legal disputes over the December 2024 election results. Both the NDC and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) are optimistic about securing the seat

Conflicting signals in NPP reflect deeper crisis – Movement for Change

0

The Movement for Change (M4C) has criticised the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for what it describes as internal confusion and disunity in the handling of the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun, arguing that the party’s conduct exposed deep divisions within its ranks.

The criticism follows the actions of Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie, the NPP’s candidate in the rerun, who defied the party’s decision to boycott the election and went on to contest. She ultimately lost by a narrow margin to Ewurabena Aubynn of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), polling 33,881 votes to Aubynn’s 34,090.

Although the NPP had publicly declared its withdrawal from the rerun—arguing that its victory in the December 2024 parliamentary election still stood—Afriyie’s participation, reportedly with the tacit support of some senior party members, sparked confusion about the party’s official position.

Commenting on the outcome of the July 11 vote, M4C spokesperson Andrew Appiah-Danquah said the contradictory actions of key NPP figures reflect a party in crisis.

“It tells you the extent to which the party is divided because it wasn’t just the candidate. We found very senior members of the party—Hon Bryan Acheampong, coming out in defiance of the position of the party.

“We found Hon Ken Agyapong, we found very senior former MPs, people who want to be executives like the Honourable Hawa Koomson,” Appiah-Danquah said on Channel One TV’s The Big Issue on Saturday, July 12.

“The NPP right now is a party without a soul,” he added, stressing what he called a lack of ideological clarity and strategic direction within the ruling party.

Minority demands immediate action for stranded Ghanaian students abroad

0

The Minority in Parliament is calling on the government to take immediate action to resolve a worsening financial crisis affecting Ghanaian scholarship beneficiaries studying overseas.

The caucus has expressed deep concern over distressing reports that government-sponsored students in countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, and parts of Eastern Europe are facing threats of eviction, deregistration, and even deportation due to unpaid tuition and living expenses.

Led by the Member of Parliament for Offinso North and a member of the Education Committee, Dr. Fred Kyei Asamoah, the Minority is urging swift government intervention to avert further hardship.

“Many have had to begin paying their rent in the dire circumstances. Equally worrying are parallel reports emerging from students in the UK and Eastern Europe facing similar threats. Some are already skipping meals,” he said.

Dr. Asamoah appealed directly to the Presidency, the Scholarship Secretariat, and the Education Ministry to act immediately to prevent further deterioration of the situation.

“We urge the government of Ghana through the Office of the President, the Scholarship Secretariat and the Minister for Education to immediately initiate payment plans, restore open communication with institutions and release funds to regularise the status of Ghanaian Scholarship Secretariat abroad,” he added.

The call follows growing public pressure for government accountability regarding the welfare of students sponsored under the Ghana Scholarships Secretariat’s programs.

Kumawood is not dead, we just lack cinemas

0

Ghanaian filmmaker, Jackson K. Bentum Ghanaian filmmaker, Jackson K. Bentum

Veteran Ghanaian filmmaker and award-winning director, Jackson K. Bentum, has dismissed claims that the Kumawood film industry is dead.

He has insisted that the industry is simply in a period of transition.

According to him, the revival of the industry depends on the development of cinema infrastructure across the country.

Speaking in an interview with Graphic Showbiz, Bentum explained that the widespread belief that Kumawood has collapsed stems from the decline of CD sales, which once dominated film distribution in Ghana.

He argued that like all creative industries, Kumawood is evolving and not obsolete.

“Kumawood is not dead, it is just waiting for its moment in the spotlight again. When you look at major film industries such as Bollywood and Hollywood, they have transitioned from physical media to dazzling theatre premieres. Here in Ghana, we’ve also stopped selling CDs, and that’s why some people believe the industry is defunct,” he explained.

Bentum, who is currently leading efforts to rejuvenate the Kumasi-based film scene, emphasised that the real challenge lies in the country’s lack of cinemas.

“The real issue is that we lack enough cinemas. If we had more, people would realise the movie industry is still vibrant. The cinematic experience that audiences worldwide cherish must also happen here,” he added.

FDA rids Bolgatanga market of unregistered products

0

Food and Drugs Authority logo Food and Drugs Authority logo

The Upper East Regional Office of the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has rid the Bolgatanga main market of unregistered and unwholesome products to promote public health and safety.

The exercise, which was conducted on a market day, saw officials of the FDA spread across the entire market including shops in the main lorry station in the municipality.

Even though the traders on sighting the FDA officials tried to hide the unregistered products, the officials still fished out the products.

They did not spare traders, who pleaded and shouted, “Please fear God and spare us.”

The unregistered products, some of which had stickers of male sex organs, included herbal products, aphrodisiacs, ointments, hand sanitisers, herbal concoctions, body enhancement and other pharmaceutical products.

The exercise lasted several hours.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) after the exercise, Abel Ndego, the Acting Regional Head of the FDA, reiterated the Authority’s core mandate to ensure the Region remained in regulatory compliance.

“We have been doing our underground work to ensure that we raid the Region to get rid of all forms of unregistered, unwholesome products and anything that has the potential of causing public health threats,” he said.

Ndego said the Authority noticed the infiltration of unregistered and unwholesome products into the Region despite several sensitization programmes for traders over the years on the dangers and penalties for such business.

“We had earlier on done some work on it but noticed that it appears we have a lot of recalcitrants in the system who still find ways of getting these unapproved products through unapproved routes into our Region.”

“And as part of our mandate to ensure public health and safety, it is imperative that we undertake exercises like this to ensure that we maintain the safety ratings of our Region and possibly beyond,” Ndego said.

Jiah Jiato Juah, the Regulatory Officer 1 (RO 1) of the FDA, who led the team of officials to conduct the exercise, told the GNA that the Authority, as part of investigations to ascertain how the products entered the Region, visited Senkase, a community in Northern Togo, which shared border with Pulmakom in the Pusiga District where the products were smuggled into the Region.

He disclosed that Ghanaian traders crossed the border to Senkase on Thursdays and Fridays to buy the unregistered products.

He said: “We tried to find out how they bring them. Unfortunately, they don’t pass through the border because we have an officer stationed at the Pulmakom border.

“Our checks revealed that they use unapproved routes with motorbikes through Bawku and Garu.”

Juah added that their checks further revealed that a lot of the products were also found in Dakola, a community in Burkina Faso, and smuggled into the Region through unapproved routes at Paga in the Kassena-Nankana West District.

Mr Juah insisted that per the regulatory law, once the products were not registered, they could not be manufactured, distributed, imported or exported.

“Unfortunately, these products are not registered. Even the pictures on the products are clear that the FDA will never register such products,” he said.

The Regulatory Officer expressed concern that despite the health risks, some members of the public were convinced to buy and use the unregistered products, and admonished residents to be wary of the dangers of such products.

An elderly woman, Rose Akaribire Atindoo, who witnessed and appeared visibly happy with the seizure of the unregistered products by the FDA, commended the officials for the action saying, “I am happy with what the officers are doing.”

She bemoaned the indiscriminate sale and use of unregistered and unprescribed drugs, especially tramadol among the youth saying, “I am old, and it’s sad that the young ones who should take over from us, the older ones, abuse these products, and eventually die prematurely from strange health conditions,” Atindoo said.

‘Justice Blay really messed up’ – Agyemang Badu on public outburst against Kotoko teammates

Former Ghana international, Emmanuel Agyemang Badu Former Ghana international, Emmanuel Agyemang Badu

Former Ghana international, Emmanuel Agyemang Badu, has expressed disappointment in Justice Blay following the midfielder’s recent public allegations against his former teammate, Kwame Opoku.

Blay, who Asante Kotoko released in June 2025, claimed in a radio interview that Opoku betrayed their friendship by dating a woman he had introduced to him as his girlfriend.

He said this led to tensions between them in camp, although they maintained professionalism on the pitch.

Reacting to the controversy, Agyemang Badu told Luv FM that Blay should not have ended his time at Kotoko in such a manner after all he contributed to the club.

“Justice Blay really messed up. He did so much for Kotoko and shouldn’t leave the club under such circumstances,” Badu said.

Blay’s comments have drawn mixed reactions among fans and former players, with many questioning the wisdom in making such personal matters public.

His departure from the club followed news that he was no longer in the technical plans for the upcoming season.

Kwame Opoku, the player at the centre of Blay’s accusations, rejoined Kotoko in January 2025 after three years away from the Porcupine Warriors.

Mustapha Gbande denies alleged role in Ablekuma North rerun violence

0

Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mustapha Gbande, has denied allegations made by Alexander Afenyo-Markin.

According to him, the Member of Parliament accused him of inciting or directing acts of violence during the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun election held on Friday, 11th July, 2025.

In a statement issued on Saturday, July 12, Mr. Gbande expressed shock at the Minority Leader’s claims, describing them as “false, reckless, and politically motivated.”

He insisted he had no involvement in or prior knowledge of any violent incidents at the 19 polling stations where the rerun took place.

“I categorically deny any involvement in, or prior knowledge of, any of the incidents he referred to,” Gbande said.

“Such conduct from a trained lawyer and senior member of the legislature reflects a disregard for truth and the ethical standards expected of public office holders.”

Mr. Gbande confirmed his presence in the constituency as part of routine electoral monitoring but clarified that he was not at the scene when the altercation involving former MP and Minister Mavis Hawa Koomson broke out.

“When I was called upon, I rushed to the scene to assist with efforts to de-escalate the situation. Contrary to the false narrative, I asked my driver to take Madam Hawa Koomson to the hospital,” he explained.

He condemned all unlawful acts and called for a full and impartial investigation by the Ghana Police Service to ensure that the perpetrators of any wrongdoing are brought to justice.

Mr. Gbande also urged the Electoral Commission and relevant authorities to enhance measures that safeguard electoral integrity and protect the dignity of political participants during such exercises.

In response to Mr. Afenyo-Markin’s accusations, Mr Gbande disclosed that the matter has been referred to his legal team for advice.

He warned that disinformation and character assassination pose serious threats to democratic discourse.

“It is essential that we preserve a political culture rooted in truth, accountability, and the rule of law,” he noted.

“I remain committed to promoting peace, fair participation, and responsible leadership values that should guide all political actors in our nation.”

He further reaffirmed his continued dedication to his duties, stating he remains undeterred and will carry on with honesty and conviction.

Dress to Impress with Confidence and Elegance

0

When it comes to attending a party, whether it’s a formal event or a casual gathering, dressing well is key to making a lasting impression. A beautifully designed outfit can not only enhance your confidence but also set the tone for your night. Here’s a guide to help you pick the perfect ensemble for your next party.

For formal events, consider a sleek evening dress or a sharp suit. Women can opt for a long gown made of luxurious fabrics like silk or satin, with subtle embellishments such as beading or lace to add a touch of glamour. Pair it with strappy heels and delicate jewelry to complete the look. For men, a well-tailored tuxedo or a classic suit with a bow tie is always a go-to choice for sophistication. Opt for a crisp white shirt and black dress shoes to maintain an air of timeless elegance.

Cocktail parties call for a mix of elegance and playfulness. Women can explore a knee-length cocktail dress with a fitted silhouette, accentuating the curves. Dresses with asymmetric hems or a pop of bold color are trendy choices. Men can go for a stylish blazer paired with tailored trousers and a dress shirt. A statement pocket square or a patterned tie can elevate the outfit, giving it a unique flair.

For a more relaxed party setting, casual chic outfits work perfectly. Women can embrace a stylish jumpsuit, which is both comfortable and fashionable, or go for a smart blouse paired with high-waisted trousers or a skirt. Add some trendy ankle boots or block heels to bring everything together. Men can opt for a crisp shirt with tailored jeans or chinos. A leather jacket or a casual blazer can add a touch of class while keeping things laid-back.

If you love making a fashion statement, consider opting for bold, eye-catching pieces. Metallics, sequins, or animal prints can be fantastic for standing out at a party. A metallic slip dress or a sparkling sequined top can grab attention and exude confidence. Men can embrace patterned suits or jackets that break the monotony and create a fun, yet stylish vibe.

Conclusion: No matter what kind of party you’re attending, there’s always a beautifully designed style that will fit the occasion. Whether it’s a glamorous gown, a sleek suit, or a casual-chic ensemble, choosing the right outfit will not only make you feel amazing but also allow you to express your personal style. So, for your next party, make sure you dress in a way that makes you feel confident and ready to shine.
