Ghana to regulate crypto exchanges

0

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) is putting the finishing touches on a comprehensive regulatory framework for cryptocurrency platforms and Virtual Asset Service Providers (VASPs), according to Governor Johnson Asiama.

Speaking at the Graphic Business/Stanbic Bank Breakfast Meeting, Asiama emphasised the urgency for clear rules amid the rise of digital financial technologies.

“Crypto is like the air we breathe—you can’t stop it. So let’s regulate it properly,” he stated. “We are working on a framework that aligns with our anti-money laundering and financial stability mandates.”

To ensure a robust and collaborative regulatory environment, the BoG has been in close consultation with the Financial Intelligence Centre (FIC) and the Ministry of Finance.

The forthcoming regulations will establish clear licensing requirements, operational standards, and safeguards against abuse for all crypto-related entities operating in Ghana.

Governor Asiama was clear in stating that the central bank is not opposed to innovation, but rather committed to preserving financial integrity.

“Crypto is here. The question is how do we manage it, not whether to ban it,” he said. “The Bank is not anti-innovation. We only seek to ensure that digital financial products do not undermine confidence in the monetary system or facilitate illicit transactions.”

With this move, Ghana is positioning itself among a small but growing number of African nations proactively tackling the regulation of digital currencies. The new framework aims to balance oversight with flexibility, ensuring that the fintech and crypto sectors can continue to innovate within a safe and supervised environment.

This regulatory step is expected to strengthen public trust, prevent money laundering, and attract responsible fintech players to Ghana’s digital economy.

Ghana needs a Pricing Regulatory Authority to curb unfair price hikes – Economist

Dr Ing. Peter Debrah, economist and enginee Dr Ing. Peter Debrah, economist and enginee

Renowned economist and engineer, Dr Ing. Peter Debrah, has called for the urgent establishment of a Pricing Regulatory Authority in Ghana to monitor and control the rising cost of essential goods and services.

Dr Debrah argues that the current consumer protection framework lacks the legal authority to regulate prices effectively, especially in the face of arbitrary price hikes linked to currency fluctuations and inflation.

“Ghana finds itself in a troubling economic cycle, where prices continue to rise without justification or oversight,” he said in a statement released Tuesday. “The time has come for Ghana to establish a Pricing Regulatory Commission or Authority.”

While existing institutions like the Consumer Protection Agency and Ghana Standards Authority focus on product quality and safety, Dr Debrah stressed that these bodies are not empowered to set or monitor prices.

“Consumer protection ensures product quality; price regulation ensures product affordability. Both are essential, but they must function independently,” he said.

He proposed that a Ghana Pricing Regulatory Authority (GPRA) should be tasked with:

Setting price ceilings and floors for essential goods,

Requiring price reductions when input costs or exchange rates improve,

Investigating and penalizing opportunistic pricing,

Issuing public bulletins on benchmark prices.

Dr Debrah was particularly critical of the dollar-linked pricing culture in Ghana, saying it lacks fairness.

“Today, nearly every product, from food to cement, is tied to the U.S. dollar. Yet, when the dollar drops, prices remain high. The GPRA will fix this with automatic price reviews tied to exchange rates and real costs,” he added.

He cited countries such as India, Malaysia, and South Africa that have successfully implemented similar pricing oversight systems to stabilize their economies and protect consumers.

To function effectively, Dr Debrah emphasised that Parliament must pass a new law to empower the authority with legal tools such as price audits, margin regulation, and enforcement powers.

“Ghana cannot continue to operate in an environment where prices go up but rarely come down,” he warned. “A Pricing Regulatory Authority is not a luxury, it is a national economic necessity.”

He urged policymakers to act swiftly, stating that “a country that controls how prices are determined controls its future.”

An Amansaman High Court has dismissed a bail application by convicted Founder of Heaven Way Church, Evangelist Patricia Asiedua, popularly known as Nana Agradaa.

Nana Agradaa appeared before the Amasaman High Court on July 15, 2025, to seek bail pending her appeal regarding her 15 year sentence.

In a video shared on social media, Agradaa’s lawyer told the media “We wanted bail pending the appeal and the court did not grant it.”

Also, in the same video, Nana Agradaa was seen in a brief moment where prison officers had covered her head as they placed the convicted preacher into a vehicle.

Background:

In 2022, Agradaa was arrested following allegations of fraud involving some members of her church.

According to the complaints, Agradaa advertised on her TV station and social media platforms that she could double the money of anyone who attended an all-night church service at her Weija-based church.

During the service, she reportedly asked over 1,000 attendees to hand over their money, promising supernatural returns.

However, the promised “money doubling” never occurred, sparking widespread outrage and prompting several victims to lodge complaints with the police.

Agradaa was subsequently charged with charlatanic advertisement and defrauding by false pretences.

On July 3, 2025, the Accra Circuit Court found her guilty on both counts. Before sentencing, the court ordered a pregnancy test, a routine legal procedure to determine appropriate custodial measures for female convicts.

According to her lawyers, Agradaa’s 15-year jail term is an ‘excessive’ sentence designed to appease the public.

Media personality Miriam Mensah, known as Mimi Kay, has shared stories of her time as a teenage mother, revealing that she gave birth while preparing for her Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

In an interview on “Just Being Us,” hosted by MzGee on Akwaaba Magic, on DStv, Mimi recounted the profound impact of losing her father, a well-respected military officer and the family’s sole breadwinner.

Mimi shared that the trauma from her father’s passing led to her being diagnosed with an anxiety disorder, which manifested in self-harming behaviors.

She added that this loss created a devastating void in her life.

“I would lock myself up. I would self-harm. I was diagnosed with anxiety disorder,” she explained.

In her search for comfort after her father’s death, Mimi became pregnant after having unprotected sex with a young man who ultimately denied responsibility for the pregnancy.

“I met this boy, and what happened, happened. I got pregnant. I wrote my BECE with a child,” she recounted.

Mimi noted that the absence of a father figure influenced her relationship choices.

“The anxiety didn’t go away. I entered relationships where I handed my entire self over, as if saying, ‘Use me,'” she admitted.

Despite the enduring effects of her trauma, Mimi highlighted the significance of faith and therapy in her healing process.

“You never truly heal from trauma, but if you have God, it makes the journey better and easier,” she said, revealing that she had to undergo therapy multiple times.

‘Betrayal of national values’ – CDM slams Ghana’s UN abstention

0

President John Dramani Mahama President John Dramani Mahama

The Centre for Democratic Movement (CDM) has criticised Ghana’s decision to abstain from voting on the renewal of the UN mandate for the Independent Expert on Protection Against Violence and Discrimination Based on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity (IE SOGI).

The vote took place during the 59th Session of the Human Rights Council (HRC59) in Geneva. CDM called the move a “dangerous dereliction of duty” and a “moral, cultural, and constitutional betrayal.”

In a statement issued on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, CDM expressed disappointment that Ghana “chose silence” at a critical time when, in their words, the global stage demanded “clarity and conviction.”

The group noted that while the government framed the abstention as a defence of neutrality, it was in fact “a calculated evasion of leadership.”

“This is not about protecting people from violence, a principle that no Ghanaian disputes,” the group stated.

“It is about extending a mandate that consistently promotes legalising same-sex marriage, self-determined gender identity, and criminalising cultural definitions of family and sexuality,” the statement said.

CDM argued that Ghana missed a vital opportunity to stand with other African nations that voted against the mandate.

“It is a moment of shame for a country that once proudly declared its commitment to cultural integrity and family values,” the statement added.

‘Have you seen $1m before?’ – Anokye Frimpong blasts CJ Torkornoo over $10m demand

0

A photo collage of Anokye Frimpong and Gertrude Torkornoo A photo collage of Anokye Frimpong and Gertrude Torkornoo

Private legal practitioner and historian, Anokye Frimpong, has strongly criticised suspended Chief Justice, Gertrude Araba Sackey Torkornoo, for her decision to sue the government at the Community Court of Justice of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) over her suspension and the ongoing hearing of three petitions for her removal.

Sharing his views on the issue, Anokye Frimpong described the decision as premature and an embarrassment to the country, while questioning the motivation behind Justice Torkornoo’s demand for $10 million in compensation.

Speaking to GBC on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, he criticised Justice Torkornoo for her compensation demands, slamming the $10 million claim as excessive and warning that it could potentially destabilise the economy.

“But going to ECOWAS, I believe it’s 100% premature.

“What about your status? What are you looking for? $10 million? If it is possible to get that money, it means you are collapsing the economy of Ghana. Ask yourself whether you have seen $1million before and you want your country to pay you that money. It means you do not have any respect for the economy of the country,” he said.

Anokye Frimpong stated that Gerturde Torkornoo should have sought support from prominent figures and decision-makers in Ghana to appeal her case on her behalf, and only approached the ECOWAS Court after exhausting all domestic options.

He said; “We have certain personalities like Cardinal Appiah Turkson, Archbishop Palmer-Buckle, Duncan-Williams, the Asantehene, National Chief Imam and certain individuals that you can nicodemously talk to and they can work things out for you easily without the embarrassment of going to ECOWAS.”

Anokye Frimpong further argued that Justice Torkornoo’s decision to approach the ECOWAS Court casts a negative image on the country, particularly its judicial system by suggesting an inability to effectively address human rights issues.

“When you get there, you are embarrassing the country to the extent that you are telling the whole world that Ghana’s judicial system is not enough to deal with human rights and other matters, and therefore, we are supposed to resort to that place.

“It’s an embarrassment to the nation and an embarrassment to yourself because you know the law and when the judicial process in your country has not been completely exhausted you are not supposed to go out,” he concluded.

Justice Torkornoo has asked the Community Court for a number of reliefs, including the revocation of her suspension, a stop to the ongoing hearing on the three petitions for her removal, which were submitted to President John Dramani Mahama, and a demand for $10 million in compensation.

NDC approached me to contest Mfantseman or Ayawaso West Wuogon seats – Prof Gyampo

0

The acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ghana Shippers’ Authority, Prof Ransford Gyampo, has revealed that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) approached him on two occasions to contest as its parliamentary candidate.

According to him, the first approach came ahead of the 2016 general elections for his hometown constituency, Mfantseman in the Central region, and the second was in the lead-up to the 2019 Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election.

Prof Gyampo disclosed this during an appearance on Adom FM’s Burning Issues, where he addressed public concerns about his recent appointment under the Mahama administration.

“President Mahama first invited me in the lead-up to the 2016 election to contest in my hometown, Saltpond, Mfantseman. But I didn’t feel the time was right. In Ayawaso West Wuogon, after Boakye Agyarko’s death, the call came again. I was then a visiting scholar at the University of Bristol. But I insisted on continuing to teach,” he recalled.

However, he noted that when the opportunity to serve arose a third time, he accepted it with a sense of national duty.

“I thought that if they believe I possess qualities that can contribute to nation-building and development, then I should avail myself,” he said.

Mahama Pressured To Address ‘Igbo King’ Brouhaha

0

FLASHBACK: President Mahama in a handshake with Eze Dr. Chukwudi Jude Ihenetu

PRESIDENT JOHN Dramani Mahama is under pressure to comment on the ongoing controversy surrounding the establishment of an Igbo Kingdom in Ghana by Eze Dr. Chukwudi Jude Ihenetu at Prampram in Ga State, Accra.

This controversy came about when Eze Dr. Chukwudi Jude Ihenetu was seen in a viral video claiming to have acquired 50 acres of land in Prampram along the Aflao road (Old Ningo) within the Ga Traditional Council purposely to establish an Igbo Kingdom, which will accommodate his tribe mates in Ghana.

Many citizens have criticised the intention of this ‘Igbo King’, noting that the presence of a foreign monarch undermines Ghana’s sovereignty and traditional chieftaincy institutions, hence the “Nigeria Must Go Protest” scheduled for July 19.

On social media, many of the youth have, since the video surfaced, called on President John Mahama to, as a matter of urgency, make a statement on the matter before it escalates.

While the presidency is yet to issue an official communication to that effect, the Ningo Traditional Council has dismissed claims that a supposed Igbo King from Nigeria has established a new kingdom within the Old Ningo area.

In a letter addressed to the Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, the Council, led by its President and Paramount Chief, Nene Osraogbo Djangmah XII, said no such authority has been granted to any individual to declare a kingdom on Ningo land.

“Our attention has been drawn to recent media publications about the alleged establishment of a kingdom by a self-proclaimed King of Igbos in Old Ningo within Ningo Paramountcy,” the Council stated, following an emergency meeting on Tuesday, July 8, 2025.

The Traditional Council clarified that the Ningo Paramountcy remains solely under the leadership of HRM Nene Osroagbo Djangmah XII, and “does not intend to have another ruler domiciled on our land.”

‘This is how we build a more equitable society’ – Bawah Mogtari lauds Mahama for scrapping fuel allowance for appointees

0

Joyce Bawah Mogtari, Special Advisor and Aide to President John Dramani Mahama, has praised the President’s recent directive to scrap fuel allowances and allocations to government appointees.

Her comments follow a Tuesday, July 15, 2025 order from the President demanding cancellation of all fuel allocations to government appointees, as well as digital TV subscriptions and other related benefits previously funded by the state.

President Mahama Scraps Fuel Allowances For Appointees

0

President John Dramani Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has cancelled the payment and allocation of fuel allowances to all political appointees, effective immediately.

This decision is part of the administration’s efforts to reduce public expenditure and redirect funds to priority sectors. According to a statement signed by Minister of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the directive aims to curb government spending and demonstrate leadership’s commitment to making sacrifices alongside citizens.

“The President believes that leadership must also bear its part of the sacrifices it is calling on the people to make,” the statement noted.

This move is the latest in a series of austerity measures introduced by the Mahama government, including reducing the size of government and cancelling satellite TV subscriptions for state institutions. The decision comes just before the implementation of a GH₵1.00 levy on every liter of fuel purchased, aimed at funding fuel procurement for power generation.

President Mahama’s fuel cut is hypocrisy, not sacrifice

0

MP for Old Tafo Constituency, Ekow Vincent Assafuah MP for Old Tafo Constituency, Ekow Vincent Assafuah

Member of Parliament for Old Tafo, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, has criticised President John Dramani Mahama’s recent announcement to cancel fuel allowances for political appointees, describing it as “populist gimmickry” that lacks genuine sacrifice and legal backing.

Assafuah argued that while the move might generate positive headlines, it exposes a deeper issue of “hypocrisy, not honesty.”

He questioned the President’s sincerity, pointing out that the directive does not apply to Mahama himself because he is “elected” and therefore exempt.

“So much for leading by example,” he wrote on his official Facebook page.

According to Assafuah, the fuel allowances in question form part of official service conditions for government appointees, and cancelling them unilaterally amounts to “an illegal and unethical variation of service conditions to the detriment of officeholders.”

“That’s not bold leadership, it’s shallow populism,” he stated.

Drawing on historical context, Assafuah recalled a similar episode in 2013 when then-President Mahama announced a 10% pay cut to fund CHPS compounds.

“But what happened?” he asked. “Many of his own appointees secretly opted out, and at the instruction of his Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, their monies were refunded. So who was really sacrificing?”

He contrasted Mahama’s recent directive with a 2022 initiative by the Akufo-Addo government, where a 30% pay cut for government appointees was publicly announced by the then Chief of Staff as a genuine cost-saving measure.

“That was leadership with shared responsibility and not empty theatre,” Assafuah noted.

He further claimed that most appointees don’t even receive “fuel allowances” as popularly imagined.

Instead, the real drain on state resources is “the fuel depot at the Osu Castle and Jubilee House, where appointees draw fuel directly, leaving the government with millions of cedis in debt to GOIL.”

Assafuah called on President Mahama to “start there” if he truly wants to cut waste and reform government spending.

Meanwhile, a statement issued by the presidency and signed by spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu confirmed the fuel allowance cancellation as part of broader cost-cutting measures.

The presidency says the decision is in line with President Mahama’s belief that “leadership must also bear part of the sacrifices it’s calling on the people to make.”

Other measures reportedly include the reduction in the number of ministers and the cancellation of satellite TV subscriptions for government offices.

Still, Assafuah remains unconvinced: “President Mahama is not sacrificing, he’s grandstanding.

‘Ghana deserves more than Mahama’s headline-chasing and hollow gestures. We deserve principled leadership and responsible governance.”

Koku Anyidoho slams Akufo-Addo’s use of state seal

0

Founder and CEO of the MILLS Institute, Samuel Koku Anyidoho Founder and CEO of the MILLS Institute, Samuel Koku Anyidoho

A former Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Samuel Koku Anyidoho, has criticised former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for using the Coat of Arms of Ghana as a letterhead on a correspondence dated July 14, 2025.

Anyidoho argued that the Coat of Arms, which serves as the official Seal of the State, is a symbol reserved strictly for the sitting president, and its use by any other person constitutes a breach of protocol.

He said this in a post on X on July 15, 2025.

“The Coat-of-Arms is the Seal of the State and must only be used by a Sitting President. This anomaly must be rectified,” he stated.

His remarks come in response to a letter issued by former President Akufo-Addo, which bore the national Coat of Arms as its official header.

The statement has triggered public debates about the proper use of state symbols by former heads of state.

Some critics say such use could confuse the public or blur the lines of constitutional authority.

As of now, there has been no official response from the Office of the former president.

The Coat of Arms is a central emblem of state power in Ghana and is used exclusively by the president and selected state institutions in the execution of official duties.

Why rejecting coins can harm the economy

0

Coins play an important role in Ghana's monetary system Coins play an important role in Ghana’s monetary system

‎Rejection of coins can have several impacts on the economy, such as contributing to inflation, weakening monetary policy, and increasing printing costs for the central bank.

Coins play an important role in Ghana’s monetary system by facilitating small transactions and ensuring price accuracy.

The coins currently in circulation are the 1 pesewa, 5 pesewas, 10 pesewas, 20 pesewas, 50 pesewas, GH¢1 coin, and GH¢2 coin.

The Head of Currency Management at the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dominic Owusu, has stated that all these coins are legal tender and must be accepted in every form of payment.

“Please accept the coins. No one should reject any coin legally issued by the Central Bank,” he told the media in Accra.

He also cautioned the public against rejecting coins, especially the 10 and 20 pesewa denominations.

Coins allow traders to provide exact change, and when they are rejected, sellers are often forced to round prices up.

For instance, if a buyer pays GH¢3.00 for an item priced at GH¢2.80 and the seller refuses to give 20 pesewas in change, the price is effectively increased. If this happens on a large scale, it can gradually push prices up, contributing to inflation.

Coins are meant to make small transactions easier and more accurate. Without them, basic purchases can become difficult.

The BoG is responsible for managing the country’s money supply to maintain economic stability. When coins are rejected, it disrupts the smooth flow of money.

Rejecting coins is more than just an inconvenience, it affects inflation control, everyday transactions, public spending, and trust in the national currency.

This is why it is important to accept all legal denominations, no matter how small. Doing so supports a stable and inclusive economy.

The BoG is therefore reminding the public that coins are not just spare change, they are an essential part of the country’s financial system.

Ex-Nigeria President Buhari’s life in pictures

0

Muhammadu Buhari witnessed and shaped Nigeria's political evolution over five decades Muhammadu Buhari witnessed and shaped Nigeria’s political evolution over five decades

Muhammadu Buhari’s life tracked the dramatic changes in politics in Nigeria over the last five decades – and he was often at the centre of events.

The former Nigerian president, who died on Sunday at the age of 82, became the country’s military leader after a coup, was imprisoned by a new junta, then reinvented himself decades later to win the presidency in a democratic election.

Often pictured in dark glasses or thick, black-framed spectacles and traditional zanna cap, much of Buhari’s life was played out in public.

Buhari – pictured here in 1977 with the then-King of Sweden Carl XVI Gustaf and Saudi Arabia’s Sheikh Ahmed Zaki Yamani in 1977 – began his military career straight out of school.

By the time this picture was taken, Buhari had risen to become a regional military commander.

A few years later, in 1983, soldiers overthrew elected President Shehu Shagari.

Although Buhari took the role of military ruler, he denied having plotted the coup, saying he was simply installed by senior commanders who needed a figurehead. Other accounts describe Buhari as playing a more active role in the takeover.

After two years of iron-fisted rule, characterised by a crusade against corruption and various human rights abuses, Buhari was himself ousted. The new junta placed him under house arrest for three years.

In 2003, following decades away from politics, Buhari decided have another go at the leading the country.

This time, he bid for the top job through a democratic election – running for the All Nigerian Peoples Party (ANPP).

Here he can be seen on the right, with his running mate Chuba Okadigbo on the left and ANPP chairman Don Etiebet.

Buhari was well beaten by Olusegun Obasanjo in 2003, and he made two other unsuccessful runs for the presidency in 2007 and 2011.

Despite these failed bids, he accumulated supporters, including disaffected youngsters, with his pledges to fight corruption and insecurity.

Buhari was particularly popular in Nigeria’s north, the region in which he was born.

Here, a sign displayed in the city of Kaduna during the 2015 election, tells passers-by that locals will only vote for “Baba” Buhari.

Buhari was eventually elected in 2015, besting incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan.

He made history, becoming the first ever opposition candidate to win a general election.

The historic moment in which Jonathan called Buhari to concede was captured on camera.

But after finally taking office, Buhari’s first term was rocky. The economy entered a recession for the first time in a decade and security crises piled up.

When Buhari’s wife – pictured below – publicly criticised his administration, the president sparked outrage by saying she belonged to the kitchen.

Despite the challenges of his first term, Buhari was re-elected in 2019.

As the president of one of Africa’s largest economies, he travelled the world, attending high-profile summits and meeting his fellow heads of state.

Buhari was greeted by Queen Elizabeth at a Commonwealth leaders gathering in 2015.

Earlier in 2015, he was welcomed to the White House by then-US President Barack Obama.

And in 2018, Buhari was the first leader from sub-Sahara Africa to meet president Donald Trump in Washington.

Following his death, at a clinic in London, Buhari is being remembered by some as a man who broke his campaign promises and crushed dissent.

By others, he was champion of order who tried his best amid a dysfunctional political system.

In a tribute to his old rival, Jonathan described Buhari as someone who “was selfless in his commitment to his duty and served the country with character and a deep sense of patriotism”.

Minority in Parliament label Mahama’s fuel allowance scrap as “settings” and PR gimmick

0

The Minority in Parliament has described President John Dramani Mahama’s decision to scrap fuel allowances and allocations for all political appointees as a populist move and “a PR gimmick.”

President Mahama today, July 15, cancelled the payment and distribution of fuel to all political appointees as part of wider efforts to cut government spending and promote fiscal discipline.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament, Member of Parliament for Akuapem North, Sammy Awuku, questioned the sincerity of the directive and called for more decisive action if the government is serious.

“If the President wants to really show that he’s committed on this fuel allowance and the cutting down of fuel and scrapping of it, I’m challenging them to close down the fuel depot at the Castle and Jubilee [House]. Because with that, then that means they are no longer going to take the fuel for free,” he said.

Mr Awuku also raised concerns about the lack of clarity about who qualifies as a political appointee.

“Does it include ministers? Does it include CEOs? Does it include presidential staffers? Who are the political appointees? Are you just talking of ministers or deputies, CEOs?” he quizzed. “Again, I need clarification on the definition of the fuel allowance.”

He further demanded transparency on the amount of money saved from the directive.

“Does it mean fuel for any political appointee, or are they trying to say that the money that will be used to pay these appointees will be refunded, or they’ll be made to pay back? We need clarity. Then again, how much is being spent on these fuel allowances, so that after scrapping, how much savings are we making? So these are very serious questions that we need to ask.”

He added: “If the Minister for Communication drives from here to Ada or Ningo-Prampram to do government business, at the end of the day, is he returning the fuel in the vehicle that the State bought for that trip? Or some way, somehow, there wouldn’t be any fuel at all?”

“I just see it as populist. It’s just a public gimmick and a clear case of PR in settings. That’s what I would say.”

However, NDC MP for Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abirem, Samuel Atta Mills, defended the President’s decision.

“I think it’s a great idea. Do you know how many government vehicles we have? So many government vehicles, and I think it’s a good example that they should buy their own fuel. I think that would be good for the nation.”

He argued that other public office holders must be willing to sacrifice for the greater good of the country.

“Members of Parliament, don’t we go around? Some of the ministers, are they not Members of Parliament? And then they go around just like we do and we, the Members of Parliament, we buy our own fuel. Nobody gives any Member of Parliament fuel allowance. No, we pay, we buy our own fuel,” Mr Mills said.

“Whether coupons or whatever, we buy our own fuel. So you are a minister and then you are buying your own fuel, you are just sacrificing a little bit for the nation, that is it”, he added.

Mahama’s fuel cuts commendable, should be codified

0

The President of policy think tank IMANI Africa, Franklin Cudjoe, has strongly endorsed President John Dramani Mahama’s recent decision to scrap fuel allowances and allocations for all political appointees, describing it as a “wonderful initiative” that should be codified into law to prevent future reversals.

President Mahama has with immediate effect, cancelled the payment of fuel allowances and the allocation of fuel to all political appointees, as part of broader efforts to reduce government expenditure and promote fiscal discipline.

The announcement was made in a statement issued by the Minister for Government Communications and Presidential Spokesperson, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, on Tuesday, July 15, 2025.

Speaking in an interview on Citi Prime News in reaction to the announcement on Tuesday, July 15, Cudjoe dismissed criticisms, labeling the move as mere populism or propaganda, stating:

“That’s a wonderful initiative, and I think that regardless of how people describe it as propaganda or populist, we love it. Even if you save a million, it could go as far as supporting some indigenes in the country.”

He emphasised that the initiative is not just symbolic, but a concrete step toward responsible governance and long-overdue public sector reform.

“This is a very important initiative which John keeps giving, which is a very important part of the conversation about reset… We are grateful for that,” he added.

Franklin Cudjoe further urged the government to ensure effective compliance and called for the measure to be codified, suggesting legislation that would make the fuel allowance ban permanent.

“What we need to do is to find a way of making sure that this thing is done, people comply, and eventually codify it so that nobody brings it back again,” he stressed.

Avoid AI in early writing stages – Mamle Wolo urges aspiring writers

0

Multi-genre Ghanaian-German writer and author, Mamle Wolo, has advised budding writers to limit their reliance on Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools when starting their writing journey, encouraging them instead to cultivate originality and personal creativity through consistent practice.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Tuesday, July 15, Mamle Wolo acknowledged the growing influence of AI in creative processes but stressed that the act of writing must begin with individual effort and expression.

According to her, AI should not be used during the formative stages of writing, stressing that it may only be helpful later to refine a writer’s work.

“When you start writing, I would say, do not go to AI first. These days, trying to fight against AI is like fighting against the calculator in the past. If you want to write and you feel a little bit nervous, the most important thing to do is to just sit down and force it out, even if what you have written seems silly or like garbage.

“That act of writing is what makes it start to flow. But if you do not have anything to work with, you cannot continue. You do not use AI in those formative stages, maybe something that could be used to brush it up,” she said.

Her remarks come on the heels of the official launch of the 2025 edition of The Literacy Challenge, a flagship nationwide competition organised by Citi FM in collaboration with Channel One TV.

The initiative is aimed at testing and nurturing the writing, critical thinking, and analytical abilities of Junior High School (JHS) students across the country.

This year’s challenge poses a topical and globally relevant essay prompt: “In not less than 600 words, discuss the effects of Climate Change on Agriculture in Ghana. What challenges do these effects create for individuals, families, communities, and the nation? Suggest practical solutions to help all Ghanaians mitigate these challenges.”

To participate, students must be between the ages of 11 and 15. Essays must be handwritten, endorsed by a parent or guardian, and must include full contact details of the participant. The deadline for submission is Saturday, July 26, 2025.

Entries can be delivered in person to the front desks of Channel One TV or Citi FM, or mailed to P.O. Box GP 14123, Accra Central.

Finalists in the competition will compete for the coveted title of Ghana’s Most Outstanding All-Round JHS Student and a grand cash prize of GH¢10,000, along with a trophy and national recognition.

The Literacy Challenge is powered by Citi FM, supported by Channel One TV, and proudly sponsored by BEL MOOO and GB Investment.

An eyewitness has shared details surrounding the assault on former Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Mavis Hawa Koomson, during the parliamentary election rerun at Ablekuma North on Friday, July 13, 2025.

Speaking with GhanaWeb TV, the witness alleged that the attack was an act of retaliation tied to a previous incident at Kasoa, where Hawa Koomson is accused of orchestrating an assault on an individual connected to the group.

“According to what I heard, her attackers accused her of masterminding an earlier assault on one of their members at Kasoa and saw the rerun as an opportunity to retaliate. When she began questioning the process, tensions rose. I was present and witnessed it all,” the witness recalled.

The attackers, she claimed, came from Darkuman specifically to carry out the act.

“The thugs who assaulted her came from Darkuman. They jumped over the wall to enter the polling station and assaulted her,” she added.

Chaos broke out at the Odorkor Methodist Church polling station, where thugs overwhelmed security personnel and physically assaulted several individuals, including the former Awutu Senya East Member of Parliament.

Hawa Koomson was shoved to the ground and stomped in the chest and groin before police intervened to rescue her.

The closely contested rerun ended with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Ewurabena Aubynn, winning with 34,090 votes, narrowly defeating the New Patriotic Party (NPP)’s Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie, who garnered 33,881 votes.

Meanwhile, the Minister of the Interior, Mohammed-Mubarak Muntaka, has assured the public that all perpetrators of the violence will be identified and face prosecution in accordance with the law.

Agradaa’s request for bail ahead of 15-year prison appeal thrown out

BoG warns against coin rejection, cites risk to economic stability

Bank of Ghana cautions public over rejection of coins Bank of Ghana cautions public over rejection of coins

‎The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has raised concerns over the continued rejection of coins, especially the 10 and 20 pesewa denominations, warning that such conduct could disrupt the country’s efforts to maintain economic stability.

‎In a citinewsroom.com report, the Central Bank reminded the public that all coins and banknotes it issues are valid legal tender and should be accepted in all monetary transactions.

‎This message was delivered by Dominic Owusu, Head of Currency Management at the BoG, during the opening session of a currency management and forecasting workshop organised by the West African Institute for Financial and Economic Management (WAIFEM) on Monday, July 14, 2025.

‎He has reiterated that all legally issued currencies, including coins, must be accepted by the public.

‎“Please accept the coins. No one should reject any coin legally issued by the Central Bank” he stated.

‎He is urging Ghanaians to use all denominations from the smallest pesewa coins to the two cedi coin since they are all recognised as legal tender.

‎According to him, coins play a key role in maintaining price and without them, traders may be tempted to round up prices, which can contribute to inflation.

‎Additionally, coins have a longer lifespan compared to paper notes, helping the country save money on printing and replacement costs.

Vinicius Jr demands to be Real Madrid’s highest paid player

0

Vinicius Jr's Real Madrid contract will end in 2027 Vinicius Jr’s Real Madrid contract will end in 2027

Brazilian winger Vinicius Jr’s contract renewal talks with Real Madrid are said to have been put on hold following a disagreement over financial demands.

According to Spanish sports journalist Josep Pedrol, who works with El Chiringuito, the negotiations have not been finalised yet.

It was noted that the player is committed to staying at the club for a longer period but wants a significant increment in his salary to match his performances.

Vinicius renewed his contract in 2022, signing a 75 million euros deal for five years with an average salary of 15 million euros net per season.

Reports indicate that he is requesting an average salary of 20 million euros net per season which would extend to 2030.

The request, if granted, would make the Brazilian the highest-paid player at Real Madrid, surpassing Kylian Mbappe’s 15 million euros net per season salary.

The Los Blancos have a salary policy where no player will be paid beyond 15 million euros net per person to avoid falling victim to Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules in the future.

This has led to a pause in the talks over the salary increase for this summer with talks expected to resume in the 2025/2026 season.

Vinicius’ recent decline in performance has also contributed to the delay in the contract renewal as the club monitors his progress.

Saudi Arabian clubs and European teams including Paris Saint-Germain are interested in the player if he decides to exit.

MSF says 3 of its workers were ‘intentionally’ killed in Ethiopia’s Tigray

0

The abandoned wreckage of a vehicle used by the Spanish branch of MSF on the road to Sheweate Hugum The abandoned wreckage of a vehicle used by the Spanish branch of MSF on the road to Sheweate Hugum

Doctors Without Borders says three of its staff were “intentionally” killed in 2021 during the fierce fighting in Ethiopia’s Tigray region.

The organisation, known by its French initials MSF, on Tuesday published the findings of its internal review into the killings of Maria Hernandez, a Spanish national, and Ethiopians Yohannes Halefom Reda and Tedros Gebremariam Gebremichael.

The northern region of Tigray erupted in a brutal civil war against the federal government from 2020 and 2022 that killed some 600,000 people.

The conflict prompted a humanitarian disaster, leaving a million displaced, and a fragile peace deal has caused simmering resentment.

MSF accused the Ethiopian government of failing to “fulfil its moral obligations” to conclude investigations. “The review confirmed that the attack was an intentional and targeted killing of three clearly identified aid workers,” says its statement.

Hernandez was one of MSF’s emergency coordinators in Tigray, while Reda and Gebremichael were a coordination assistant and driver for the NGO. All three employees of MSF-Spain were shot dead on June 24, 2021, in southern Tigray.

The NGO said they and their vehicle were all clearly identified. According to the medical charity, a convoy of Ethiopian soldiers was present at the time of the attack.

MSF said despite numerous follow-ups with the federal authorities in Addis Ababa, they had not received “any credible answers” and the government had “failed to fulfil its moral obligations to conclude an investigation into the attack”.

“This was not the result of crossfire, nor was it a tragic mistake. Our colleagues were killed in what can only be described as a deliberate attack,” said Paula Gil, president of MSF-Spain.

The report follows from an international investigation in 2022 when the NGO said the three aid workers had been killed “intentionally,” without providing further details.

The New York Times newspaper claimed in a 2022 investigation that an Ethiopian army officer had given the order to kill the three aid workers.

But Raquel Ayora, director-general of MSF-Spain, said on Tuesday, “We cannot confirm that or go that far.”

The report’s findings were presented to authorities, who did not respond, the NGO said. Ethiopian authorities refused to meet the president of MSF-Spain to discuss the MSF investigation into the killings.

The 2020-2022 war pitted federal forces, supported by local militias and the Eritrean army, against Tigrayan rebels. All of the warring parties have been accused of war crimes.

However, an NGO called The Sentry said in June that, while all sides perpetrated war crimes, the nature of the atrocities committed by the Eritrean army was “unmatched in scale and premeditation”.

Ethiopia, Africa’s second-most populous country with nearly 130 million inhabitants, has been led by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed since 2018.

The suspects

Three suspects who succeeded in robbing money meant for the payment of salaries of workers of a company in the Shama District of the Western Region, have been arrested.

The robbery incident occurred at Nyanikrom near Shama Junction on Wednesday, July 9, 2025.

It happened after staff of the company had gone to withdraw the money from a bank.

The Western Regional Police Command arrested the three suspects whose names were given as Francis Mensah alias Francis Kwaw, 34;  Ebenezer Cofie, 32; and Samuel Bentum, 35 years.

The arrest followed a targeted surveillance operation based on credible intelligence that the suspects, who had insider information, were planning to rob officials of the company.

This was contained in a statement issued and signed by the Head of Public Affairs Unit of the Regional Police Command, Supt Olivia Ewurabena Adiku.

According to the statement, on that fateful day, at about 12pm, staff of the company had withdrawn money from a bank in Takoradi.

While they were returning to the company’s premises, they were ambushed near Unique School Junction at Nyanikrom by the suspects who were on a motorbike.

The suspects forcibly broke the window of the vehicle which was carrying the company’s staff and the money, and made away with the cash.

Prompt response by police personnel who had mounted surveillance in the area led to the arrest of the three suspects and recovery of GH¢149,500.

The suspects are currently in police custody assisting with investigations.

Meanwhile,  a driver of the company, identified as Maxwell Kofi Yeboah, who is alleged to have conspired with the suspects, is currently at large and being pursued by the police.

The Regional Police Command has assured that efforts are ongoing to apprehend the remaining suspect and bring all the perpetrators to justice.

Ablekuma North rerun: Hawa Koomson admits using pepper spray in self-defence

0

Former Awutu‑Senya East MP, Mavis Hawa Koomson, has broken her silence after deploying pepper spray during the tumultuous Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun last Friday, 11 July, stating her actions were a protective measure amid a life-threatening situation.

The election day descended into disorder at the St Peter’s Methodist Church polling station, following reports of unidentified men overpowering police and assaulting voters and officials—including Koomson.

Viral footage captured her reaching for a canister and deploying pepper spray as a group of men advanced on her.

In her first interview since the incident on Accra’s UTV on Tuesday, 15 July, Koomson told viewers she had arrived at the centre with her security team but was compelled by police to enter alone. “I did not go there to cause trouble,” she insisted

Koomson alleged she was targeted by individuals she recognised from Kasoa, linked to the opposition NDC. “One of them shouted, ‘Where is Hawa Koomson?’ and they just pounced on me,” she recounted, dismissing suggestions that her action was premeditated. “The claims that I went there…with ill intentions and carried pepper spray for that purpose are unfounded”.

Describing the incident as terrifying, she added: “My son was stabbed during the voter registration exercise, so I know I’m a target for the NDC. When I saw the thugs walking toward me holding knives, I acted in self-defence.”

While several voices—, including NPP and NDC figures have exchanged accusations over the day’s violence, Koomson remains steadfast that her only intent was to protect herself in a volatile environment.

Govt sets August 18 deadline for registration of mining machinery

0

As part of efforts to streamline operations in the mining sector and clamp down on illegal mining activities, the government has issued a directive requiring all machinery used in mining activities to be registered with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) by August 18, 2025.

According to a statement issued by the Ministry of the Interior on Tuesday July 15, any mining equipment found unregistered after the deadline will be confiscated by the State.

The directive, signed by Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, further authorises the Ghana Police Service and the DVLA to begin rigorous enforcement of the new requirement starting August 2, 2025.

“The general public, especially those who use mining machinery, are advised to take note and comply with the directive,” the statement read.

The government says the move is part of broader efforts to reform the mining sector, enhance accountability, and support the fight against environmental degradation caused by illegal mining, often referred to as galamsey.

The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring internal security and the maintenance of law and order, warning that failure to comply will have serious consequences.

We’ll scrutinise govt policies — GNAFF President

0

The Ghana National Association of Farmers and Fishermen (GNAFF) says it will scutinise government policies and programmes to ensure that they serve the interest of Ghanaians, especially farmers, fishermen and women.

The newly elected President of the association, Michael Tetteh Kwetey, said it was time for members to put their collective energies and resources together towards “the improvement of our livelihoods and the Ghanaian economy”.

He, however, assured the government of their preparedness to partner with it to increase productivity and improve people’s livelihoods.

Mr Kwetey, a businessman, was addressing the eighth national delegates congress of GNAFF at Brofoyedu in the Atwima Kwanwoma District in the Ashanti Region last Saturday, during which he was elected as new President of the association for a four-year term.

He polled 70 votes to defeat his only challenger, Dr Peter Kwesi Terkper, who had 66 votes, to win the contest at the two-day congress.

Mr Kwetey said the association’s renewed life and strength was not only a testament to the resilience and strategic relevance of the association to the local economy, but also reinforced its role as the backbone of Ghana’s economy.

He added that no society could ever imagine a future without farmers, fishermen and women, saying “this very point underscores the transformative power inherent in our collective energies and resources”.

Mr Kwetey said the new leadership would visit farmers and fishermen nationwide to further appreciate their working and living conditions, and how the association could collectively improve the conditions of farmers and its members.

Heroes

In a speech read on her behalf, the Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Emelia Arthur, described farmers and fisherfolk as the heroes feeding the nation and sustaining countless livelihoods.

She said their “resilience and hard work often in the face of adversity deserve our highest commendation”, adding that the ministry remained committed to policies and programmes that would promote a sustainable fisheries and aquaculture sector.

She encouraged the association to continue to foster unity, innovation and advocacy for the welfare of its members, and indicated that their collaboration with the ministry, other government agencies and private partners was key to achieving a vibrant fisheries and agricultural sector.

Fragmented

The Ashanti Regional Director of Agriculture, Geodfrey Appiah Acheampong, said GNAFF could not feed the nation when farmers and fishermen were fragmented, under-resourced and under-represented.

“We must continue to break silos, strengthen farmer-based organisations and promote inclusive policies that prioritise the needs of our members,” he said, adding that unity would enable them to speak with one voice, negotiate better, adopt innovative practices and adapt to climate shocks together.

The two-day congress, held on the theme: “Uniting farmers and fishermen to feed the nation”, also witnessed the election of other officers of the association.

Rev. Simon Banmarigu polled 106 votes to win the position of Youth Organiser as against 30 votes secured by Temple Solomon Adjei.

Dawuda Nashirata lost the General Secretary position to Dr Abutu Kapori.
Other elected officers who went unopposed were Dr Israel Kuadzi as Deputy General Secretary; Isaac Amanor as National Treasurer; Paul Agorsu Danklu as National Financial

Secretary; Emmanuel Anunyam as National Organiser; and Shaibu Mohammed as Deputy National Organiser.

The rest were Esther Asi Tettey Akplehey as National Women’s Organiser, Felicia Ayamga as Deputy National Women’s Organiser, and Rev. Richard Amoh as the Deputy National Youth Organiser.

New president’s profile

Mr Kwetey has over two decades of experience in business development, growth and entrepreneurship.

A businessman and entrepreneur, he is currently the Director and Chief Executive of Kwat Company Limited, a haulage company in the petrochemical industry of the downstream sub-sector of the energy sector.

Mr Kwetey holds a Master of Laws, Energy Law, from the University of Ghana, a Bachelor of Laws from Central University College and a Master of Administration in Oil and Gas Management from Coventry University.

He also has a Master of Arts degree in Development Communication from the University of Media, Arts and Communication.

The immediate past President, GNAFF, Nene Terkpetey Agbleze I, who chaired the event, called on the leadership and members to remain united to sustain the operations of the association

He said, “we need peace and unity within the association to achieve the goals and objectives of the association”.

COPEC applauds Mahama for ending fuel allowances for appointees

0

The Chamber of Petroleum Consumers-Ghana (COPEC) has described the government’s decision to scrap fuel allowances for political appointees as “commendable and forward-thinking.”

President John Dramani Mahama on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, announced the immediate cancellation of all fuel-related benefits and allocations to political appointees.

The directive, which is part of efforts to cut government spending and promote fiscal discipline, was communicated in a statement issued by the Minister for Government Communications and Presidential Spokesperson, Felix Kwakye Ofosu.

According to the statement, the move forms part of a broader cost-cutting strategy under the Mahama administration’s Reset Agenda, aimed at redirecting public funds to critical development priorities.

Reacting to the announcement, Executive Secretary of COPEC, Duncan Amoah, welcomed the decision and called for transparency in how the resulting savings will be utilised.

“We also, demand that, the monies that would have been used in providing fuel for the appointees that has been scrapped forthwith be put into an account and the proceeds of same, be used for specific public projects that will benefit both current and future generations to serve as a testament of the current government’s prudent management and utilisation of public resources,” COPEC stated.

GOVERNMENT SCRAPS FUEL ALLOWANCES FOR ALL ITS APPOINTEES

The decision by the government to effectively immediately scrap all allowances for fuel for every appointee of the president is commendable and forward-thinking, albeit a few things will have to be considered forthwith.

Fuel allowances over the years have been enjoyed by virtually all Article 71 office holders, appointees of the president and other public officers to make mobility easier for these important public office holders in addition to the age provision of vehicles, fully serviced and fueled by the state.

Our recent checks indicate averages of about 833 litres or 185 gallons per appointee per month.

These figures are staggering, though some appointees do receive way more than these average figures.

The above serves as an indication of how much the state expends on public office holders aside, providing them with ultra-new vehicles and maintenance of the same.

While we believe appointees should be catered for in a way as to reduce the tendency to be corrupted while holding public offices, we also believe the excesses of office ought to be curtailed and for that reason, we view this new directive by the President as completely laudable and commendable.

Given the above, however, it is our demand herewith that all other public office holders’ emoluments and gratuities be reviewed going forward to reflect the current economic status of the country as the government seeks to advance austerity in public spending.

We also, demand that, the monies that would have been used in providing fuel for the appointees that has been scrapped forthwith be put into an account and the proceeds of same, be used for specific public projects that will benefit both current and future generations to serve as a testament of the current government’s prudent management and utilisation of public resources.

We also further encourage the Government to consider the adoption and assembly of electric or solar-powered vehicles for public office holders going forward as has been proposed by the Minister of Energy and Green Transitions.

The departure from high consuming landcruisers and other vehicles will go a long way in eliminating the need to at any point in time, restore the now scrapped fuel allowances by the current government.

To end, we want to encourage, the Government to audit the petroleum price build up as some taxes on the current price build up have outlived their purposes and should be removed to give respite in the face of the imminent introduction of the new one Ghana cedis per litre levy which is set to come into effect on the 16th of July, 2025.

Signed.

Duncan Amoah.
Executive Secretary.

15 Years Sentence Challenge: Nana Agradaa denied bail

Nana Agradaa has been jaild for 15 years for charlatanic advertisement and fraud Nana Agradaa has been jaild for 15 years for charlatanic advertisement and fraud

An Amansaman High Court has dismissed a bail application by convicted Founder of Heaven Way Church, Evangelist Patricia Asiedua, popularly known as Nana Agradaa.

Nana Agradaa appeared before the Amasaman High Court on July 15, 2025, to seek bail pending her appeal regarding her 15-year sentence.

In a video shared on social media, Agradaa’s lawyer told the media, “We wanted bail pending the appeal and the court did not grant it.”

Cedi appreciated by 42% as from January to June 2025

Dr Johnson Pandit Asiama is the BoG Governor Dr Johnson Pandit Asiama is the BoG Governor

The Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Pandit Asiama, has said the local currency has appreciated by over 42% from the beginning of the year to June 2025.

According to him, this was achieved through synchronised policy execution through fiscal discipline in the foreign exchange market.

The governor noted that the gains made have reversed almost all the losses made in the last 2 to 3 years.

The Ghana cedi gained steadily on the FX market this year, moving from GH¢17 to GH¢10.30 on the interbank market.

Speaking during the Graphic Business and Stanbic Bank Breakfast Meeting held in Accra on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, he said, “The Ghanaian Cedi has appreciated by over 42% year-to-date as of June 2025, reversing nearly all the losses incurred in 2022 and 2023.”

The governor intimated that the BoG maintained a firm disinflation stance, raising and holding the monetary policy rate at 28%.

He noted that the bank conducted an active Open Market Operations (OMO) to absorb excess liquidity and enforce discipline in the foreign exchange market through structured FX auctions and forward guidance.

“These actions were not in isolation. They were reinforced by the Ministry of Finance’s commitment to fiscal consolidation, as captured in the 2025 Budget and aligned with the structural benchmarks of the IMF programme,” he noted.

Contrary to reports of market intervention, the governor stated that “what we are witnessing is the power of synchronised policy execution where the central bank’s inflation-targeting mandate and the government’s expenditure rationalisation converge to restore credibility, stabilise expectations, and anchor the Cedi”.

Manchester City confirm Kolo Toure as permanent first-team coach

Yaya Toure is the new assistant coach of Man City Yaya Toure is the new assistant coach of Man City

Manchester City have confirmed that Kolo Toure will stay on as a permanent member of Pep Guardiola’s first-team coaching staff after impressing during the Club’s FIFA Club World Cup campaign this summer.

The former Cote d’Ivoire international, who won Premier League titles as a player with both Arsenal and City, steps up to the senior role full-time after a successful stint as Assistant Lead Coach with City’s Under-18s last season.

Toure, 44, played a key role alongside Oliver Reiss in guiding the Under-18s to the Premier League Under-18 North crown, before narrowly missing out in the national final and FA Youth Cup final, both against Aston Villa.

His appointment marks another chapter in what has already been an impressive coaching journey.

Toure has gathered experience with the Cote d’Ivoire national team, worked under Brendan Rodgers at Celtic and Leicester City, and even took charge at Wigan Athletic before returning to the Manchester City fold.

City’s Director of Football, Hugo Viana, hailed the decision to add Toure to Guardiola’s backroom team on a permanent basis.

“We’ve also been hugely impressed with his work and success with our Under-18s, and by adding him into our senior staff permanently, this will only strengthen the transition for players in our Academy into the first team. As we already saw throughout his time with Pep Guardiola, Pep Lijnders and James French this summer, his massive personality of optimism and positivity is hugely infectious and we’re already looking forward to his work moving forward,” he said.

Toure’s leadership and warmth were on full display during Manchester City’s Club World Cup campaign this summer, and the club is confident he will continue to be a vital figure as Guardiola’s side look to build on their recent successes.

Burna Boy apologises for distancing himself from Afrobeats

0

Burna Boy is one of the world's most successful Afrobeats artists Burna Boy is one of the world’s most successful Afrobeats artists

Burna Boy has apologised for comments he made distancing himself from Afrobeats.

The Nigerian singer-songwriter is seen as a trailblazer who has helped to bring the genre to a global audience.

But he faced backlash over a 2023 Apple Music interview where he said it “lacks substance” and most artists in the space had “almost no real-life experiences”.

Speaking to 1Xtra’s Eddie Kadi, Burna says the reaction to his comments made him realise why it was important to have an umbrella term to advance the Afrobeats movement.

Burna, real name Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu, made history in 2023 when he became the first African artist to headline a stadium show in the UK.

By that point, he already had a Grammy under his belt and was known for dominating the Official UK Afrobeats chart.

But, he says, at the time he didn’t want his music, which he sees as a “mix of elements” to be defined by a single genre.

“I didn’t understand why people wanted my music to be inside one box,” he says.

“The way I saw it, if you just put everything into Afrobeats, you’re now comparing Socrates to Kendrick Lamar because they both said two things that rhyme so they both must be rappers.”

Burna says he was “in a dark place mentally” when he made the comments.

“I wasn’t the happiest man in the world,” he says.

He says the “division” his words caused helped him to “come to terms” with his opinion.

“I got the point of the Afrobeats tag in that moment,” he says.

“I totally get it and I apologise for that confusion.”

He says he’s now content to wear the label, which he leans into on his new album, No Sign of Weakness, released last week.

“I learnt to embrace the fact that I will always be different,” he says.

“I’m not going to be the favourite but I’m going to be the best.”

Burna Boy, who has almost 24m monthly listeners on Spotify, performed at Wireless Festival on Sunday.

He says performing live is his main passion.

“I want to be able to do this until I die,” he says.

“I want to be doing this the way someone like Coldplay has been doing it for a long time, or The Rolling Stones,” he says.

“These people are still doing what I’m doing now, so why don’t I see anyone that looks like me, on those levels, at that age?

“And it’s simple, it might sound crazy, it’s because they just don’t love it as much as I do.”

He suspected – rightly – that his idol, Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger, might understand.

So he asked him to feature on his new track, Empty Chairs.

“Mick Jagger is the rock star,” he says.

“I felt he, out of everyone in the world, would understand where I was coming from with this song lyrically and he did.”

Working with the 81-year-old rocker was “one of the best experiences I’ve had,” says Burna.

The singer’s just started his European and North American tour, which is due to wrap up at the end of the year.
