“They Protected Us Better Than Police” – Obiri Boahen Defends Disbanded Vigilante Groups

News Hub Creator2h

Former Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Obiri Boahen, has criticised the party’s decision to disband its vigilante groups, calling the move “childish” and politically costly as reported by Ghana Web.

His remarks follow violent scenes at the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun, where prominent NPP figures were reportedly assaulted by individuals suspected to be affiliated with the opposition.

Boahen argued that the Delta Force and Invisible Force played a crucial role in the NPP’s 2016 electoral victory and offered protection that state security agencies could not.

He expressed frustration over the party’s failure to protect theit own, especially during critical political events.

He attributed the current vulnerability of party members to the passage of the Vigilantism and Related Offences Act in 2019, which led to the formal disbandment of political militia groups.

According to Boahen, this decision left the NPP exposed to attacks from opponents. “It did not make sense when the NPP introduced a law to disband vigilante groups,” he said.

Using the recent incident as an example, he warned that such attacks could escalate in future contests if measures are not taken to secure party loyalists.

Boahen also claimed that he had strong ties with the disbanded groups and would have been made their patron if they were still active.

He stressed that while political violence is not ideal, the reality of Ghana’s political terrain demands that parties take steps to protect their members.

“Strangely, You’re Picked Over Zanetor” – Afenyo-Markin Slams Prof Ayensu in Fiery Exchange

0

A heated exchange erupted in Parliament on July 14, 2025, after Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin directed criticism at Professor Grace Ayensu-Danquah, MP for Essikado-Ketan as reported by Ghana Web.

The Effutu legislator accused the newly elected MP of acting out of order during proceedings, instructing her to sit down and refrain from interrupting while a leader was speaking.

The tension escalated as Afenyo-Markin questioned why Prof Ayensu was reportedly being considered for a ministerial appointment in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government ahead of more senior MPs.

Referring to the MP for Klottey Korle, he remarked, “You came to meet Dr Zanetor here, and for some strange reason, it appears your name is being considered when even party stalwarts like Helen Ntoso are still waiting.”

Prof Ayensu, who is the Deputy Minister of Health-designate, pushed back strongly against the comments. Addressing the Speaker, she stated that the remarks were discouraging and discriminatory toward female legislators.

“Mr Speaker, there are only 14% of women in this House, and some of these statements are very discouraging,” she said.

She further noted that her actions were misinterpreted, explaining she had only stood to catch the Speaker’s attention, not to disrupt proceedings.

Prof Ayensu called for the expunging of Afenyo-Markin’s remarks from the official records, saying she was “offended by it, having done nothing to deserve such treatment.”

The incident has sparked fresh concerns over the treatment of women in Ghana’s Parliament, especially as they continue to push for fair representation and respect within the legislative chamber.

CODEO Condemns Ablekuma North Electoral Violence

A violent scene during the election

The Coalition of Domestic Election Observers (CODEO) has expressed its grievances on the disruption that occurred during the Ablekuma North Constituency election re-run in Accra.

In a statement issued yesterday, the coalition condemned the   violence and intimidation against poll workers, voters, journalists and two female politicians that disorganised the electoral process.

The coalition further commended the Ghana Police Service for interdicting the officer who allegedly assaulted a journalist, and urged the police to apprehend and prosecute all persons involved in the acts of violence.

It stated, “Perpetrators must face the full force of the law to deter others from engaging in such undemocratic practices during elections and clamp down on impunity.”
CODEO also urged all Ghanaians and the media who captured various angles of the incidents to make their videos and photos available to the Ghana Police Service, to aid in their work.

Again, the coalition also condemned the use of “incendiary and provocative language” by both the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) at the end of the election.

“It is clear that political party actors are unwilling to learn from the many years of election-related violence and the numerous victims it has produced in the Fourth Republic,” it stated.

It added that this toxic political culture must be removed from competitive politics, stating that “it will one day overwhelm all of us and destabilise Ghana’s young democracy.”

Further, it stated that the security lapses observed during the Ablekuma North Constituency election re-run despite the visibility of security personnel, questions the state of the Ghana Police Service.

The group expressed surprise on the roaming of unauthorised persons, who were allowed to move freely around the polling stations posing fear to voters without interception.

CODEO, therefore, called on President John Mahama and the Ghana Police Council to invoke their constitutional authority under Article 202(2) to launch an official inquiry into the police’s handling of election security during the re-run.

Mohammed Kudus (L) told Stonebwoy (R) how much he loved the refix on the song Mohammed Kudus (L) told Stonebwoy (R) how much he loved the refix on the song

A video of Ghanaian dancehall musician, Stonebwoy, has sparked social media discussions after he composed a refix of his “Overlord” song for Ghanaian football international, Mohammed Kudus.

On July 11, 2025, Tottenham Hotspur released a short video of Kudus during his unveiling.

In the 38-second video, Kudus was welcomed with a special refix of Stonebwoy’s hit song, ‘Overlord,’ from his 2024 ‘Up & Running’ album where the lyrics were altered to fit the player’s transfer.

In a recent video making waves on social media, shared on July 14, 2025, the Tottenham player, during his photoshoot, was called by the football management to listen to the song.

In the video, Mohammed Kudus noted, “This track is mad and I really like it.”

In the same video, Mohammed Kudus was seen on a video call with the Bhim Nation President, Stonebwoy, where he expressed his joy after listening to the song.

“I hear the track. E be mad waa. The lyrics of the song are crazy. In August, you have to come to the stadium because it is another shutdown. That is my new ringtone,” he said.

Stonebowy in response to Kudus also disclosed that he composed the song in less than 24 hours after news broke about Kudus’ transfer to Tottenham.

“I composed the song yesterday. I didn’t sleep because we had to fix it just yesterday. Can’t you see my eyes?

“I hope you love the tack. Anything you want to fix inside the track now now, we fit do,” Stonebowy told him.

The video has quickly gained traction online, especially among Ghanaians who were thrilled to see one of their top music icons featured in a global football announcement.

Five cost-cutting measures Mahama has introduced in the last 6 months

0

President Mahama commits to fiscal discipline President Mahama commits to fiscal discipline

President John Dramani Mahama has, in the last 6 months in office, adopted various fiscal discipline measures to ensure expenditure rationalisation amid the country’s economic recovery.

In a recent development, the president has, effective immediately, directed the cancellation of payment of fuel allowances and allocation of fuel to all political appointees.

According to him, this is aimed at curbing government expenditure, cutting costs and channelling public funds into priority areas.

This brings the total number of cost-cutting measures to five.

The measures announced so far include:

1. No DStv subscription: President Mahama has prohibited the usage of DStv and other satellite television subscriptions at the Jubilee House and will expand it to other government agencies later.

According to the government, the action is part of a larger cost-cutting plan to cut back on unnecessary public spending and show government humility.

“I can reveal to you that if you come to this house, there’s no office in this house that is allowed to subscribe to DSTV or any satellite television,” he said.

2. No first-class travel: President John Dramani Mahama announced a ban on first-class travel for government appointees, emphasising that his administration will be marked by modesty and respect for the people of Ghana.

According to a report by myjoyonline.com, he made this known at the swearing-in ceremony of ministers at the Jubilee House on Friday, February 7, 2025.

The president stressed that public officials must be mindful of how they use state resources.

He also stated that he had directed the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, to officially inform ministers and government appointees of an immediate restriction on non-essential travel.

“Any travel that is deemed essential and necessary must be cleared first with the Office of the Chief of Staff and such travels will have to be taken in modesty; no first class,” he said.

3. No government appointee must buy state assets: President John Mahama, as part of his campaign promise and decision to tackle corruption through Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL), announced that no appointee under his government will be allowed to buy state assets.

In an engagement on July 7, 2025, he said, “Anybody serving in my government will not be allowed to buy a state asset. Nobody serving in my government will buy a state asset. Vehicles, cars, buildings, land, or anything else, nobody serving in our government will be allowed to buy a state asset.”

4. No cash gifts above GH¢20k: During the launch of a new code of conduct for appointees on May 5, 2025, President Mahama reiterated that all government appointees are barred from engaging in acts that compromise ethical standards, reinforcing his administration’s commitment to integrity in governance.

“We all know our cultural fondness for gifts, but we must now draw a clear line between appreciation and influence. Appointees are prohibited from accepting gifts or favours, especially from companies or individuals with vested interests in government decisions. If a gift is received during an official engagement and its estimated value exceeds GH¢20,000, it must be declared. Upon leaving office, such gifts must be surrendered unless expressly permitted by the President to retain them,” he stated.

5. No fuel coupons for government appointees: President John Dramani Mahama has further directed the cancellation of payment of fuel allowances and allocation of fuel to all political appointees with immediate effect.

The directive forms part of a broader curb in government expenditure aimed at cutting costs and channelling public funds into priority areas.

The president believes that leadership must also bear its part of the sacrifices it wants the citizens to make.

President Mahama has, moreover, suspended Independence Day celebrations at the Independence Square to save costs.

He has also announced a review of port charges pending parliamentary approval.

Despite these measures, it is unclear how much the government is saving from these cost-cutting measures.

Employment measures have not worked – ISSER report

0

Government interventions intended to reduce youth unemployment have since 2015 failed to effectively address the issue, a report on a study by the Institute of Statistical, Social and Economic Research (ISSER) has established.

The report further emphasised that while initiatives such as the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP), Youth in Agriculture Programme (YiAP), and Nation Builders Corps (NABCO) offered training and job placement opportunities, they often overlooked youth interests, as the training modules and job offerings were developed without the direct input of the intended beneficiaries.

It identified two main causes of high youth unemployment in the country: a significant mismatch between the skills gained through training and labour market demands, and a shortage of job opportunities to accommodate the increasing number of young people entering the workforce.

These are some of the findings of the study included in the report titled “Ghana Social Development Outlook (GSDO) Report 2024”.

The report, which was launched last Friday, attracted personalities such as the Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs of the University of Ghana, Professor Gordon Akanzuwine Awandare, and the Executive Director of the Institute for Democratic Governance (IDEG), Dr Emmanuel Akwetey, with the Executive Director of the Ghana Integrity Initiative (GII), the local chapter of Transparency International, Mary Awelana Addah, chairing the function.

The report is structured in 10 chapters covering education, health, housing, water and sanitation, employment, energy, gender equity, social relations, and population, among others, providing timely insights supported by data and expert analysis.

The 2024 edition is the seventh in the series of the report.

Findings

The Head of Social Division of ISSER, Dr Martha Awo, who shared the report findings, stated that government programmes such as NEIP and YiAP offered training modules, while NABCO, for instance, was focused exclusively on job placement.

She explained that the training programmes were focused primarily on the agricultural sector and entrepreneurship.

Dr Awo said job placement programmes did not centre on the provision of what the International Labour Organisation would classify as decent jobs.

She said payment of arrears, in particular, led to disaffection among beneficiaries towards the system.

“Young people’s interests are not central to the development of either the training modules or the kinds of jobs on offer for them,” she said.

Going forward, Dr Awo suggested efforts to ensure that the training opportunities provided were fit for purpose and that the intended jobs were decent enough.

“Young people should be included in the design of the training and job placement programmes. A tracer study should also be conducted to determine the extent to which these programmes shape the trajectories of young people,” she said.

Employment policy

The Director of ISSER, Prof. Peter Quartey, called on the government to develop a comprehensive employment policy to provide decent jobs for the youth in the country.

He explained that the proposed policy should harmonise the various youth employment initiatives introduced by past governments into a cohesive document, ensuring continuity and stability rather than the current practice of changing programmes with each new regime.

The ISSER Director said the country could support its development agenda and create meaningful opportunities for young people.

Prof. Quartey said the report, published biennially since 2012 by ISSER’s Social Division, had become a key resource for tracking the country’s social development progress.

“Each edition reflects our commitment to providing accessible, evidence-based analysis that informs policy and contributes meaningfully to national development discourse.

“Over the past six years, we have benefited from the support of industry partners such as the Agricultural Development Bank (ADB), Ghana, whose contributions have strengthened our dissemination efforts, including the production of policy briefs, organisation of events, and targeted media engagements,” he added.

Lwengo government teacher found hanged in suspected murder

0

A probe is underway into the incident A probe is underway into the incident

Police in central Uganda are investigating the suspected murder of a 46-year-old government teacher whose body was discovered tied and hanged inside his home in Lwengo District, officials said Monday.

The victim, identified as Dennis Mutebi, was a teacher at Kyangwe Primary School and also served as treasurer for CBS POWESA, a regional education support organisation in the Masaka sub-region.

His body was found on Sunday in his bedroom in the Western Zone of Kinoni Town Council, according to local leaders. Police said he appeared to have been tied with ropes and hanged from the headboard of his bed, in what residents described as a brutal and baffling attack.

“We were shocked to find our neighbour murdered in such a brutal manner,” said Richard Ssembatya, the area’s LC1 chairperson.

He added: “This is the first time something like this has happened in our village. We demand justice.”

Police said the motive remains unclear. A motorcycle and several sacks of dried coffee beans were found untouched in the house, ruling out robbery as an immediate cause, residents said.

Mutebi’s brother, Joseph Ndawula, urged authorities to prioritise the investigation and bring those responsible to justice.

“We are heartbroken, and we call upon the police to find those responsible for this terrible act,” he told journalists.

District Youth Councillor Annet Nambalirwa described the slain teacher as a peaceful and respected member of the community.

“Mutebi was a lively and peace-loving individual. His death is not just a loss to his family but to the entire education community. We must not rest until justice is served,” she said.

Police led by ASP Ronald Gume retrieved the body and transported it to Masaka Regional Referral Hospital mortuary for a postmortem examination. No arrests had been made by Monday morning, but police said inquiries were ongoing.

The killing has sent shockwaves through the local community and raised fresh concerns over the safety of rural educators and residents.

Uganda has experienced occasional violent crimes in recent months, with civil society groups urging law enforcement to bolster community policing and intelligence-led investigations.

Authorities have appealed to the public to share any relevant information that could assist in identifying the assailants.

If you want to come after me, do so directly – Mustapha Gbande dares NPP

0

Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mustapha Gbande, has firmly denied allegations linking him to violent incidents during the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, monitored by DailyNewsGhana, Gbande dismissed claims made by the Minority Caucus in Parliament—led by Alexander Afenyo-Markin—that he and NDC Deputy National Communications Officer, Malik Basintale, played roles in inciting unrest during the July 11 polls.

Education Ministry secures $117m for Basic School interventions

0

The Ministry of Education has allocated an additional $117.1 million from the Ghana Accountability for learning outcomes (GALOP) and its second additional funding (AF2) project initiative to scale up targeted interventions in basic schools across the country.

The funding is expected to support a range of education-enhancing programmes, including teacher training, school grants, and performance-based incentives aimed at improving learning outcomes.

This was made known during the First meeting of the project oversight committee for the Ghana Accountability for learning outcomes project (GALOP) on Tuesday, July 15.

In a speech delivered on behalf of the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu,  who chairs the Project Oversight Committee, he emphasised the importance of deploying and monitoring every intervention effectively.

“GALOP AF2 provides an additional 117.1 million dollars to scale up targeted interventions in basic schools. We must ensure that every intervention from teacher training and school grants to performance-based incentives is effectively deployed and monitored.

“As a committee, our effectiveness would be measured by the clarity of our direction, the quality of our oversight, and the responsiveness of our system to on-the-ground realities,” he stated.

The project has been funded by the World Bank, the Global Partnership for Education, among others. The meeting saw in attendance development partners, heads of implementing agencies, and members of the project oversight committee, which included the World Bank.

The Ministry also underscored the critical role of oversight and responsiveness in the implementation process. “Our effectiveness will be measured by the clarity of our direction, the quality of our oversight, and the responsiveness of our system to on-the-ground realities,” the official added.

Punish Ablekuma North Election Offenders – Bullgod Tells Mahama

0

Artiste manager and entertainment critic, Lawrence Nana Asiamah Hanson, otherwise known as Bullgod, has spoken out strongly against the recent violence that marred the Ablekuma North election rerun, calling for immediate punishment of those responsible.

Speaking on UTV’s United Showbiz, he condemned the violent incidents and warned of the consequences of political lawlessness being allowed to fester.

He, therefore, called on President John Dramani Mahama and the Inspector General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, to bring the perpetrators to book.

Bullgod referenced previous incidents, including the assault of Member of Parliament, Sam George years ago, as examples of a pattern of impunity that must end.

“It’s not good, and frankly, it reflects badly on all of us. Years ago, Sam George was beaten in broad daylight — a Member of Parliament — and no one was arrested. Now, it’s happened again. There are clear videos showing the faces of those involved. If we’re not serious, three years will pass and nothing will be done,” he said.

The music executive also questioned the role and preparedness of security agencies at such events, stating that while the police were present, they are often ill-equipped to respond to sudden threats.

“The police are not there to die for us. If someone pulls a gun, they’ll run. They have families too,” he noted, adding that those who instigate violence must be held accountable.

Bullgod urged the government to act decisively, insisting that President John Mahama is aware of the events, as his representatives and security officials were present on the ground during the incident.

“We don’t need to tell the President; he has seen it… Everyone knows what happened. I believe His Excellency John Dramani Mahama and our father, the IGP, will do the right thing.”

He further questioned the need for prolonged investigations when video evidence clearly shows those involved in the attacks, suggesting that the lack of accountability continues to endanger Ghana’s democracy.

“It’s sad, and we must move away from this kind of politics. Some of these small clashes are likely to spiral out of control,” he added.

The Ablekuma North election rerun was ordered by the Electoral Commission (EC) following irregularities during the December 2024 general elections.

However, the process has been marred by reports of violence, voter intimidation, and the presence of individuals in unapproved uniforms.

Bullgod joins a growing number of public figures and citizens calling for justice and a peaceful political environment.

My Curves Are Natural, Not BBL – Wendy Shay

0

Wendy Shay

Singer, Wendy Shay, has strongly denied rumours suggesting she underwent plastic surgery to enhance her body, particularly a Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL).

In a post on X, the “Too Late” hitmaker declared that her curves are natural.

Wendy expressed frustration over assumptions that any curvy African woman must have had cosmetic surgery. She questioned why society is quick to associate fuller figures with surgical enhancements, especially when African women have naturally possessed such body types long before the rise of BBLs.

“So y’all want to tell me before BBL, Africans didn’t have a natural shape like mine? What’s with this BBL tag… Is it because I have gained at the right places?” she posted.

The Rufftown Records artist explained that her recent change in appearance is due to natural weight gain, not surgery. She added that people may not have noticed her body shape earlier because of the harsh criticism and body shaming she faced when she first entered the music scene.

“Y’all should get a life and stop being naive. What you are seeing is 100% natural and it is not my fault y’all didn’t realise it earlier because of the bullying when I stepped into the game,” she wrote.

Wendy Shay also criticised unrealistic beauty standards and the constant scrutiny women face, adding that society always finds something to criticise.

“It’s either your booty is too big, too small, or too fake. Mind your business! Africa, wake up!”

The statement has since attracted widespread discussion among social media users.

Wendy Shay remains one of Ghana’s most talked-about female artists, known for her music, confidence, and outspoken nature.

Movement for Change member backs government’s withdrawal of military protection for civilians

Nana Yaw Sarpong is a leading member of the Movement for Change Nana Yaw Sarpong is a leading member of the Movement for Change

A leading member of the Movement for Change, Nana Yaw Sarpong, has welcomed the decision by the Ministry of Defence to withdraw military protection for civilians who are not legally entitled to such services.

The directive affects public officials, former ministers, and business persons who have been benefiting from military escorts without official justification.

Speaking on TV3 New Day on Tuesday, July 15, Sarpong described the move as timely and necessary in restoring discipline and professionalism in Ghana’s security sector.

According to him, individuals who feel the need for additional protection should resort to private security services at their own expense.

“The police have a mandate. If you occupy an office and need additional security outside the police, you go and then you seek for one and you pay for it,” he said.

He expressed concern over the misuse of military personnel to guard private properties while Ghana continues to face unresolved security challenges.

“For us to use our military when our borders are open and we still have not been able to deal with the issues, for heaven’s sake, that is not what the military is for,” he stressed.

The Ministry of Defence has indicated that the withdrawal directive forms part of broader efforts to ensure that military deployment aligns strictly with legal and national security protocols.

‘We need industrialisation for Ghana’s development’

Cletus Seidu Dapilah is the MP for Jirapa Cletus Seidu Dapilah is the MP for Jirapa

The Member of Parliament for Jirapa, Cletus Seidu Dapilah, has made a passionate call for Ghana to move beyond theoretical discussions and adopt practical strategies to drive industrialisation.

He said he believes industrialisation is a key pillar for the country’s economic growth and long-term development.

Speaking on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana on July 15, 2025, Dapilah emphasised that Ghana has for too long depended on academic and policy-level rhetoric without translating those ideas into concrete action.

According to him, the country’s development goals will remain unfulfilled unless deliberate efforts are made to implement industrial policies on the ground.

“We need industrialisation for the development of this country. We lack practical experience to drive industrialisation; enough of the theory,” he stated.

Dapilah noted that while successive governments have introduced various industrial policies, many have failed to achieve the intended outcomes due to a lack of follow-through and inadequate investment in technical and vocational training.

He added that bridging the gap between education and industry is crucial.

He also called for stronger collaboration among the government, the private sector, and academic institutions to create hands-on training opportunities that can prepare young people for industrial jobs.

He also advocated for improved infrastructure and financial support for small and medium-scale manufacturers.

The MP concluded by urging leaders to be bold and visionary in their approach.

“We must create a system that allows our young people to build, produce, and innovate. That’s the only way we’ll see true progress in Ghana’s industrialisation journey,” he said.

Some Black Queens players celebrating a goal Some Black Queens players celebrating a goal

Ghana’s Black Queens turned on the style in Marrakech, brushing aside Tanzania 4-1 to storm into the quarter-finals of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations on Monday, July 14, 2025.

The Queens went into halftime frustrated at 1-1, but a ruthless second-half surge saw them fire three unanswered goals to set up a last-eight showdown with Algeria.

Their bright start paid off early when Tanzania’s goalkeeper fluffed a clearance, ricocheting the ball off Princella Adubea and into the net for Ghana’s opener.

But after taking the lead, the Queens eased off the pedal, allowing the Twiga Stars back into the game.

Goalkeeper Cynthia Konlan had to bail them out with a crucial save, while Alice Kusi rattled the woodwork moments later. Ghana were made to pay when Stumai Abdallah Athuman pounced to draw Tanzania level before the break.

Chances fell to Princess Marfo and Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah to restore the lead, but both were denied as the first half ended all square.

Ghana, however, came out firing in the second half, driven by Marfo’s electric runs down the flank. Her persistence earned a penalty, calmly converted by Kusi, her second goal of the tournament, to swing the momentum back Ghana’s way.

Injured Adubea made way for Evelyn Badu, who needed just 12 minutes to make it 3-1, tapping home a rebound to put daylight between the sides.

Boye-Hlorkah then capped off a fine night for the Queens, curling a beautiful strike into the top corner to seal a statement win.

Next up is Algeria on July 19, 2025, and a place in the semi-finals now beckons for the resurgent Black Queens.

“No matter how badly they treat you, never drop to their level”- Essikado MP after spat with Afenyo-Markin

Essikado-Ketan Member of Parliament, Prof Dr Grace Ayensu Danquah, has issued what appears to be a pointed response directed at the Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin’s controversial comments on her recent appointment.

The Minority Leader suggested in Parliament that the elevation of Dr Grace Ayensu, who has been nominated as a Deputy Health Minister, was for “strange reasons,” apparently in comparison to other female MPs, including Dr Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, who has not received any appointment yet.

Francis Doku calls for independent body to produce Ghana’s annual tourism report

0

The Chief Executive Officer of Maestro Africa Group, Francis Doku, has called for Ghana’s annual tourism report to be produced by an independent institution rather than the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA).

Speaking on Joy FM’s with Kwame Dadzie, Doku expressed doubts over the accuracy of figures presented in the 2024 Ghana Tourism Report. He suggested that a body such as the Ghana Statistical Service would be more appropriate for compiling the data.

“Last year, we had a very long conversation [about] the fact that Kwadwo Antwi had said tourism had become the number three contributor to the economy, and I said I didn’t see any evidence to support it. I still contest it because it wasn’t mentioned in the Finance Minister’s report or anything. Because the numbers we generate in tourism are supposed to sit somewhere. Somebody should have it,” he said.

Francis Doku referenced practices in countries like South Africa and Kenya, where national statistics agencies are responsible for producing tourism data.

“For example, in South Africa, it is the Statistical Service Department that releases the tourism report. Kenya also has a service that releases the report. Because you cannot be the referee and the player by yourself,” he added.

He stressed the need for broader discussion around the credibility and transparency of tourism data in Ghana.

The 2024 Ghana Tourism Report, published by the Ghana Tourism Authority a few weeks ago, claimed that the country welcomed over 1.28 million international tourists in 2024, marking a 12 percent increase from the previous year. The GTA says this growth generated about $4.8 billion in revenue, signalling a steady recovery for the sector after the COVID-19 slowdown.

While the GTA hailed the figures as evidence of a successful post-pandemic rebound and effective tourism promotion campaigns, some stakeholders, including Mr Doku, remain sceptical about the methodology used in gathering and reporting the data.

Tems Makes History As First African To Headline FIFA Club World Cup Final

Grammy-winning Nigerian singer, Tems, has become the first African artist to headline the FIFA Club World Cup final, making history with a powerful performance during the match between Chelsea and PSG on Sunday, July 13.

Tems thrilled a global audience with some of her biggest hits, including “Essence,” “Born in the Wild,” and “Free Mind.” Her performance was part of the official entertainment for the final, co-produced by FIFA and Global Citizen, and received wide praise from both football and music fans.

This milestone places Tems among global music icons such as Shakira and Jennifer Lopez, who have previously performed at FIFA events.

In 2021, Tems earned her first Grammy for her role in Future’s hit “Wait For U” featuring Drake. In 2025, she added another Grammy to her name, winning in the Best African Performance category.

With this historic moment, Tems continues to raise the bar for African artists on the global stage.

Bright Simons

Azumah Resources Ghana Limited has distanced itself from policy analyst, Bright Simons, stating emphatically that he does not represent the company in any capacity, and his public commentary should not be interpreted as the official position of the firm.

The announcement comes amid heightened public commentary and media reports, particularly concerning statements made by Simons.

“Mr. Bright Simons does not represent, act on behalf of, or speak for the Shareholders or Directors of Azumah Resources Ghana in any capacity,” the Board stated, calling his remarks “personal opinions.”

Negotiations With E&P

Meanwhile, the company has revealed that it is currently in talks with Engineers & Planners (E&P) to resolve the ongoing commercial dispute between the two entities.

The Board of Directors of Azumah Resources clarified that discussions between the two companies are being conducted within the framework of Ghana’s legal and regulatory systems, and with guidance from relevant ministerial bodies, according to a statement issued on Sunday, July 13, 2025.

“Azumah Resources is currently engaged in confidential, good-faith negotiations with Engineers & Planners (E&P), with the shared objective of achieving a constructive and mutually acceptable resolution to the present impasse,” the statement read.

The company cautioned the media and public to refrain from speculative or misleading reports, which it fears could jeopardise the integrity of the negotiation process. Instead, it urged stakeholders to rely on official spokespersons for verified information.

Azumah Resources also addressed the inclusion of the ECOWAS Bank for Investment and Development (EBID) in some public narratives.

The company clarified that while discussions had taken place in Lomé in 2023 regarding potential financing, EBID’s interest was purely indicative and contingent on internal credit assessments and Board approval.

“Any extrapolations beyond this context are both inappropriate and unauthorised,” the company added.

Reaffirming its commitment to professionalism and transparency, Azumah Resources emphasised its intent to act in the best interest of all stakeholders, including the Republic of Ghana.

“Akwatia Is Too Early for Any Reprisals” – Prof. Aning Quells Fears Ahead of By-Election

0

Security analyst Professor Kwesi Aning has dismissed concerns that the upcoming Akwatia by-election could be a flashpoint for political violence, following the recent disturbances during the Ablekuma North rerun as reported by Citinewsroom.

In an interview with Citi FM’s Eyewitness News on July 14, Prof. Aning emphasized that any move to seek immediate retaliation would not only be tactically flawed but also premature.

He argued that politically motivated reprisals are unlikely to occur so soon after the last incident.

“I think Akwatia is too early for any reprisals,” he stated, suggesting that individuals or groups planning any form of retaliation would be more strategic and delay their actions until attention and security presence diminish.

Prof. Aning stressed the importance of taking a long-term view on election security, noting that threats may surface when institutional focus on violence prevention weakens.

He cautioned that those with ill intent may avoid heavily policed elections, waiting instead for more opportune moments when the national focus has shifted elsewhere.

He also advised against deploying security forces solely in high-profile areas like Akwatia.

Instead, he advocated for a more distributed and sustained security strategy that anticipates potential hotspots over time.

According to him, “They will bide their time. They will wait for an opportunity where these acts of violence have been forgotten.”

He urged election stakeholders and security agencies to adopt a proactive approach, maintaining a vigilant and visible presence beyond election day.

This, he believes, will help to deter future acts of politically motivated violence and reassure the public of their safety during the electoral process.

Ewe Loyalty Foundation supports orphanage

By Evans Worlanyo Ameamu

Abor (VR), July 15, GNA -The Ewe Loyalty Foundation, a non-governmental organisation (NGO) in the Volta Region, has demonstrated its commitment to social responsibility by donating to ‘In My Father’s House Village Orphanage at Abor in the Keta Municipality.

The donation, worth over GHC10,000, included essential items such as bags of rice, gallons cooking oils, boxes of spaghetti and tin tomatoes, assorted drinks, parks of bottled and sachet water, detergents, toiletries, learning materials, as well as clothing and footwear.

Mr Julius Kukubor, the Founder of the Association, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), said the main objective of the Foundation was to give hope to the less privileged students in the areas, by helping to meet their daily needs, and further ensure the long-term development of the school.

Mr Shine Eric Setor, the General Secretary of the Foundation, explained that uplifting the less privileged was the sole duty of the Organisation and believed that the support was not just an act of charity, but an investment in the future of these children and the country.

He said the Ewe Loyalty Foundation was founded in March 2021 as a Facebook group and was officially registered with the Registrar General Department in October 2023.

“The primary aim of the foundation is to support its members, orphans, prisoners, hospitals, and deprived schools by visiting, making donations, and volunteering in any way possible to help members of the Ewe communities.”

Reverend Father Joseph Rabbi Ozy, the Director of the school, who received the items on behalf of the staff and students, expressed gratitude to the Foundation for their kind gesture, and urged them to extend their donations to all who may need their assistance.

He said the management of the school was happy for the transformative impact of such donations on the well-being and growth of the children, saying the gesture was highly appreciated and would support the school in several ways.

He said the foundation’s donation to Orphanage was just a testament to the commitment to social responsibilities and their efforts would have a significant impact on the lives of the children, and their kindness was a reminder of the importance of giving back to the community.

Some teachers and students who interacted with the GNA expressed excitement over the donations and thanked the donors for the timely intervention which would undoubtedly make a difference in the lives of many children and communities.

They appealed to other philanthropists, corporate organisations, individuals and the government to help alleviate some of the pressing challenges the school faced, which included infrastructure needs.

NPP’s indecision caused low turnout – Adomako Kissi

0

Former Member of Parliament for Anyaa Sowutuom, Dr. Dickson Adomako Kissi, has attributed the low voter turnout during the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun to the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) indecision and lack of clarity leading up to the polls.

Speaking on Breakfast Daily on Channel One TV on Tuesday, July 15, Dr. Kissi stated that voter confusion and uncertainty stemmed from the party’s wavering stance on whether to participate in the rerun. This situation ultimately affected NPP’s performance at the ballot box.

“I must admit the party was not very decisive leading up to this, and that may have also contributed to the lower voter turnout.

“People thought about whether we were partaking or not. Bad news travels faster than good news; once you say you’re not going, everybody hears. But when you say you are going and are campaigning on the ground, then people become aware,” he said.

Dr. Kissi also accused the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of engaging in voter suppression tactics during the rerun, citing acts of intimidation in what he described as a calculated effort to silence the NPP’s base in a traditionally strong-hold constituency.

“What happened in Ablekuma North was largely voter suppression in grand style. The constituency has largely been an NPP stronghold, so if you’re the NDC, the best thing you can do is suppress voters by intimidation. This was a clear case of a voter suppression scheme or scandal,” he asserted.

His comments follow the violence that marred the rerun held on Friday, July 11, in 19 polling stations across the Ablekuma North Constituency. The Electoral Commission (EC) had called for the rerun after identifying irregularities in the collation process, particularly, a failure by some Presiding Officers to validate scanned pink sheet results.

The rerun became a major flashpoint between the EC and the NPP, with the party’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, strongly rejecting the Commission’s decision. Mr. Kodua maintained that the party’s parliamentary candidate, Nana Akua Afriyie, had won the original election and that all verification and collation procedures were properly followed.

Despite the party’s official boycott, Nana Akua Afriyie defied the directive and contested the rerun. In the outcome, the NDC’s Ewurabena Aubynn emerged victorious with 34,090 votes, narrowly defeating Afriyie, who garnered 33,881 votes.

However, Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie has rendered an unqualified apology to the party’s National Council for defying its directive to boycott the recent parliamentary rerun in 19 polling stations.

Brouhaha over posters of Ernest Kumi’s wife settled

0

Former District Chief Executive (DCE) for Denkyembour in the Eastern Region, Seth Birikorang, has dismissed reports suggesting that the wife of the late Akwatia MP, Ernest Yaw Kumi, intends to contest in the upcoming New Patriotic Party (NPP) primaries.

This follows the circulation of viral posters featuring the widow, Mavis Kumi, announcing her purported intent to contest in a potential by-election.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Birikorang, a close friend of the family, refuted the reports as false.

He clarified that the widow’s actual name is Mavis Asiamah, not Mavis Kumi as stated on the poster, and described the poster as fake.

According to him, Mavis has no interest in politics, has not expressed any intention to succeed her husband, and has not authorised anyone to promote her as a candidate.

“It was around 2:00 p.m. on Monday when someone drew my attention to the flier, and the family is really disturbed about the development.

“I want to state categorically that she has no plans to succeed her husband. Under no circumstances will she consider that, so I will urge all those driving that campaign to stop. The family is troubled and yet to come to terms with his sudden death, so it is a difficult moment, and we don’t need this,” he stated.

NPA, Judiciary join forces to crack down on petroleum sector crimes

0

NPA CEO Godwin Edudzi Tameklo met with Acting Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie on July 15, 2025 NPA CEO Godwin Edudzi Tameklo met with Acting Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie on July 15, 2025

The Chief Executive of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Godwin Edudzi Tameklo, has called on Acting Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie to consider creating a dedicated petroleum court to expedite the prosecution of fuel-related cases in the downstream petroleum sector.

According to him, the existing regulatory framework under the National Petroleum Authority Act, 2005 (Act 691), which mandates the Authority to regulate and oversee activities within the sector, has not kept pace with the industry’s evolving dynamics.

Speaking at a high-level engagement on Monday, July 15, 2025, Tameklo explained that although the Authority has internal structures to resolve some disputes, criminal cases often suffer delays in the general court system.

He stressed the need for specialised judicial support either in the form of a dedicated court or by assigning a judge to periodically preside over petroleum-related issues.

“Our role as an authority extends beyond regulation to protecting national economic and energy security. Criminal infractions in the downstream sector threaten this mandate. A strong collaboration between the NPA and the Judiciary will ensure that offenders are held accountable swiftly, serving both justice and deterrence,” he said.

For his part, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie welcomed the proposal and described it as “worth exploring,” noting the frustrations caused by protracted court trials. He cautioned, however, that a shortage of judges and heavy court dockets could pose challenges.

“I support the idea of a dedicated court that can handle your cases with expedition. Criminal prosecution is not just about punishing offenders, it is also about deterrence, letting people know there are consequences for breaking the law,” he added.

The proposed collaboration with the Judiciary marks a critical step toward ensuring that these powers are effectively exercised to safeguard industry integrity and protect consumers.

Spanish government demands investigation into Lamine Yamal’s controversial ‘dwarf’ birthday party

Lamine Yamal recently celebrated his 18th birthday Lamine Yamal recently celebrated his 18th birthday

The Spanish government is set to open an investigation into Lamine Yamal’s 18th birthday party, which took place on July 12, 2025, in Barcelona.

Reports from Spain indicate that “dwarves”, who could be described as midgets, were hired to entertain guests at the event, sparking criticisms from a section of the public.

The Association of People with Achondroplasia and Other Skeletal Dysplasias (ADEE) fumed that the entertainment was degrading to people with related conditions.

One of the models who attended the party, named Claudio Calvo, also claimed Yamal paid for 12 women with a certain breast size to attend the bash.

In light of the criticisms, the Spanish government is planning to take legal action against the Barcelona prodigy for alleged exploitation of dwarfism.

However, one of the accused entertainers denied claims of exploitation during the party, saying they were treated with dignity and criticising ADEE for disregarding them which negatively affects their job as entertainers.

“No one disrespected us; let us work in peace. I don’t understand why there’s so much hype. We’re normal people who do what we want in an absolutely legal way.

“(ADEE) is humiliating people with dwarfism. For a couple of years now, these people have been harming us; they want to ban a job that we like, and in no case have they offered jobs or courses to affected people. We work as entertainers; why can’t we do it? Because of our physical condition?” he questioned as quoted by Goal.com.

Yamal’s father has denied any wrongdoing and refuted the accusations.

Mahama scraps fuel allowances for political appointees

President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, has cut fuel allowances to all political appointees.

A statement from the presidency said that the decision taken by the president is to help cut costs and help channel public funds into priority areas.

The statement signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu said the president believes that leadership must also bear part of the sacrifices it’s calling on the people to make.

A Modern Take on Timeless Style for Women

    0

In recent years, vintage fashion has seen a remarkable resurgence, with modern women embracing styles from past decades and infusing them with contemporary flair. This revival is more than just a nod to nostalgia—it’s a celebration of timeless elegance, quality craftsmanship, and unique expression. From fabrics that whisper old-world glamour to silhouettes that redefine sophistication, vintage material trends are once again shaping the fashion landscape.

    Velvet: Luxe Revival of Glamour

Velvet has long been associated with luxury, and its return to prominence in women’s fashion is anything but surprising. Historically favored in the 1920s and again in the 1970s, velvet is being embraced today for its rich texture and regal aesthetic. Whether it’s a velvet slip dress for evening wear or a casual velvet blazer, the fabric adds an unmistakable touch of refinement.

“Velvet is not just a material—it’s a statement. It brings a sense of richness to everyday fashion,” says vintage style curator Elise Morano.

Current trends favor deep, jewel-toned hues like emerald, ruby, and sapphire, merging old-school glam with modern silhouettes for a sophisticated look that works across seasons.

Tweed: Classic Structure with a Modern Edge

Once synonymous with British heritage fashion, tweed remains a staple in the modern vintage wardrobe. This textured fabric gained popularity in the 1950s and 1960s, thanks to icons like Coco Chanel, and it continues to hold sway today. Its durability and elegance make it perfect for structured blazers, midi skirts, and two-piece sets.

Designers are reimagining tweed with brighter colors and sleeker cuts, making it more versatile and approachable for the everyday woman. It’s the perfect balance of professional and stylish—timeless, yet entirely now.

Lace and Chiffon: Romantic Echoes of the Past

Soft, flowing fabrics like lace and chiffon recall the femininity and delicacy of early 20th-century fashion. Popular during the 1920s and 1930s, these materials are being reintroduced in modern wardrobes through vintage-inspired gowns, blouses, and accessories.

Today’s designers incorporate these fabrics into contemporary styles that speak to romanticism without feeling outdated. Think sheer lace overlays, floral chiffon dresses, and intricate trims that add grace to any ensemble. These materials remain staples for those seeking a gentle, whimsical charm in their wardrobe.

    Corduroy: From Retro to Runway

Corduroy, once considered a practical fabric of the 1970s, has transformed into a fashion-forward material. With its soft ridges and durable weave, corduroy pants, jackets, and skirts are enjoying renewed popularity.

Modern iterations feature slimmer cuts, brighter colors, and unexpected pairings—like corduroy jumpsuits or tailored suits—making the material relevant to today’s street style and office wear alike. It’s a nostalgic trend with real functionality, proving that comfort and style can coexist.

    Denim: The Everlasting Icon

Few fabrics have the cultural staying power of denim. From the rebellious youth of the 1980s to the grunge scene of the 1990s, denim has been reinvented time and time again. Now, high-waisted jeans, cropped jackets, and denim midi skirts are all drawing inspiration from vintage styles while being reshaped by modern aesthetics.

Faded washes, distressed details, and patchwork designs lend a casual coolness that continues to resonate. Denim remains the ultimate vintage-meets-modern staple—a foundation for any wardrobe.

    A Vintage Future

What sets vintage fashion apart is its ability to remain relevant while honoring the past. Whether it’s the sensual drape of chiffon or the structured charm of tweed, vintage materials are being reimagined by a new generation of women who crave authenticity and individuality in their style.

Accra, July 15, GNA – As part of efforts to align national security institutions with the Government’s 24-Hour Economy Policy Agenda, the Ghana Immigration Service, has developed a 24-Hour Policy at its Headquarters in Accra.

Alhaji Mohammed-Mubarak Muntaka, the Minister for the Interior/National Security, said as of June, the Service had also prosecuted 13 suspects in Accra for human trafficking, illegal entry, and document forgery, whilst deterring breaches and enhancing national security.

He noted that the Service had analyzed 263 document fraud cases, identifying 111 as fraudulent, preventing identity theft, and related crime.

Alhaji Muntaka made the disclosure in his Mid-Year Review Report for the Ministry of the Interior/National Security at a press conference at the Presidency in Accra.

The press conference, which was organised by the Presidency Communication Bureau, dubbed the “The Governance Accountability Series”, is part of efforts by the Government to deepen transparency and accountability in governance.

He said the Ghana Immigration Service rescued 21 human trafficking victims, intercepted 291 irregular immigrants, and arrested 223 individuals for immigration breaches. “Additionally, they have intercepted smuggled goods, including 406 bags of cocoa beans, 1,115 general cans, 11 bags of fertilizers, 50 gallons of fuel, with one vehicle impounded,” Alhaji Muntaka said.

The Minister said the Service had also increased interagency collaboration, which had facilitated coordination among agencies for prevention of crime and public safety.

He said the Service had removed a total of 1,617 foreigners for various breaches under the Section 20 and 21 of Immigration Act 573.

NPP suspends Agona West 2024 Parliamentary Candidate for defying party directive

    0

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has suspended its 2024 parliamentary candidate for Agona West, Christopher Arthur, for breaching a directive issued by the party’s General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua, which prohibits internal campaign activities for party positions.

In a letter jointly signed by the constituency secretary, Anthony Kwame Kum, and chairman, Alhaji Gibrine Tanko, Arthur was accused of convening an electoral area meeting on Sunday, July 6, 2025. The party described the meeting as a clear violation of party regulations and an act of administrative indiscipline.

“Your action not only disregards the authority of the General Secretary but also undermines internal unity and the strategic work being done to strengthen the party ahead of the next general election,” the letter stated.

Four key cost-cutting measures to cut public spending

This brings the total number of cost-cutting measures to four.

He made this known at the swearing-in ceremony of ministers at the Jubilee House on Friday, February 7, 2025.

President Mahama has also suspended Independence Day celebrations at the Independence Square to save costs.

He has also announced a review of port charges pending parliamentary approval.

Despite these measures, it is unclear how much the government is saving from these cost-cutting measures.

Minority MPs demand reversal of Mahama’s ban on State land transactions

    0

The Minority caucus in Parliament is demanding the immediate reversal of President John Mahama’s directive to the Lands Commission to halt all processing of State lands.

Barely a week after assuming the reins of power, the President ordered the immediate cessation of all activities related to the sale, lease, or processing of transactions involving State and public lands.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Tuesday, July 15, the Member of Parliament for Subin, Kofi Obiri Yeboah, acknowledged the President’s intention to safeguard public lands but stressed that the sweeping nature of the directive could harm legitimate landholders and stall economic activity.

“Although the President’s decision may aim at safeguarding public lands, these directives may also affect individuals and corporate entities who may have legitimately acquired interests in these lands,” the Minority said.

They further argued that if the government genuinely believes the private sector is the engine of growth, then such a ban undermines its own economic principles.

“The government, as a matter of urgency, should lift the ban,” the statement urged.

The MPs also expressed concern about potential revenue losses to the state, noting that the Lands Commission generates significant income through stamp duties, consent fees, and lease preparations all of which contribute to the Consolidated Fund.

“A continued halt will adversely impact the Consolidated Fund,” they warned.

BoG Spent $1.4bn On Forex Intervention – IMF

    0

    Dr. Johnson Asiama

Latest report by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has revealed that the Bank of Ghana (BoG) sold $1.4 billion in forex market in the first quarter of 2025.

The country’s report shows a sharp increase in the $1 billion the Bank injected in the forex market in 2023 rising further to $3 billion in 2024, with $2 billion sold in the fourth quarter in the lead up to the 2024 general election.

“The BoG’s footprint in the FX market continued to increase, with inflows reaching US$11 billion (up 42 percent from 2023) and FX sales (FXI) tripling to US$3 billion in 2024 (including US$2 billion in Q4). Large-scale FXI continued in 2025, reaching US$1.4 billion in Q1,” it noted.

The report revealed that the strong external sector along with repeated FXI contributed to a 60 percent nominal exchange rate appreciation against the US dollar between November 2024 and May 2025.

The report also disclosed that although 2024 growth was stronger than anticipated, staff lowered its 2025 growth projection to 4 percent on a larger negative fiscal impulse than previously anticipated and a tighter monetary policy showing a favourably macroeconomic outlook.

The IMF report stated that only three out of eleven structural benchmarks (SBs) due between January and May 2025 were met as some missed structural benchmarks  were implemented with delay, attributing that to factors such as quarterly electricity tariff adjustments (quarterly SB starting from end-January 2025).

“This  resumed only in April 2025 due to delays in appointing a new board of the energy sector regulator (PURC), while the publication of the audit of Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG)’s collections and uses (end-January 2025 SB) was achieved in February 2025 and covered a longer period than mandated by program conditionality,” it explained.

“The full integration of Ghana Electronic Procurement System (GHANEPS) with GIFMIS, an end-December 2024 structural benchmark, was achieved in May 2025. The authorities completed the forward-looking overarching restructuring plan for NIB in May (prior action) and the government has recapitalised NIB to ensure a non-negative Capital Adequacy Ratio (CAR) (prior action)—and to fully comply with the minimum CAR of 13 percent (without forbearance), ahead of the end-2025 timeline,” parts of the report read.

It further stated that the authorities have implemented ahead of schedule two end-September 2025 SBs: amending the fiscal responsibility framework and adopting a strategy to restructure Electricity Company of Ghana, including opening operations to private sector participation.

Parts of the report also mentioned that the Ministry of Finance (MoF) is implementing a multipronged strategy to address the causes and budgetary impact of 2024 fiscal slippages, envisaging short and medium-term measures building on the ongoing PFM reforms.

The short-term measures, it stated, included reversing new hires of civil servants and pausing unbudgeted projects originated by policy decisions from the previous administration, enacting a 2025 Budget consistent with a 1.5 percent of GDP in the fiscal primary balance (end-March 2025 SB) and enacting changes to the PFM and Public Procurement Acts to improve the fiscal responsibility framework (end-September 2025 SB).

Lamine Yamal faces huge fine for presence of 'dwarfs' at 18th birthday party

The Spanish Government has demanded an investigation into Barcelona superstar Lamie Yamal’s controversial 18th birthday party after ‘dwarfs were exploited’ and women with ‘specific breast measurements were paid to attend’.

A social media model named Claudio Calvo alleged that  Barcelona sensation Yamal paid for 12 women with a ‘certain breast size’ to attend the bash, and now the government is seeking a huge fine and a probe into the mafia-themed bash following outrage that he used people with dwarfism as entertainment.

The Spanish playmaker celebrated his 18th birthday on July 13, with around 200 people attending the event, including friends, family, and teammates.

Jesus Martin Blanco, the director general for the rights of persons with disabilities in Spain’s Ministry of Social Rights, has called for an investigation, while the Association of People with Achondroplasia and other Skeletal Dysplasias in Spain (ADEE) condemned what it called “a violation of ethical values” and said it will look to take legal action.

Earlier, the ADEE threatened to take legal action, and the Spanish government joined those condemning Yamal and demanded a probe into the party.

According to Marca, Yamal could be hit with a fine of up to £867,000, and the General Director of Disability in the government, Jesús Martín, wants ministers to approve an investigation.

“We are concerned that people with money, people with power, believe themselves to be unpunished. The law is for everyone, for the humble and for the powerful.’ Martin also expressed his fear that this kind of party could impact impressionable young fans who look up to Yamal and copy his behaviour.

“The ADEE, a member organisation of the Spanish Confederation of People with Physical and Organic Disabilities, condemns and publicly denounces the hiring of people with dwarfism as part of the entertainment at the recent 18th birthday party of soccer player Lamine Yamal,’ their statement read.

“The Association announces that it will take legal and social action to safeguard the dignity of people with disabilities, considering that these actions violate not only current legislation but also the fundamental ethical values of a society that seeks to be egalitarian and respectful.”

Too many Ghanaian businesses continue to price in US dollars – BoG Governor

    0

Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr Johnson Pandit Asiama, has raised serious concerns over the continued use of foreign currencies, particularly the US dollar, in domestic transactions, describing the trend as a growing threat to Ghana’s monetary stability.

Speaking at the Graphic Business Breakfast Meeting held in Accra on Tuesday, 15th July, Dr Asiama lamented the persistent culture of dollarisation in key sectors of the local economy.

“We are still grappling with a deep-rooted culture of dollarisation. Too many businesses continue to price in dollars in real estate, education, and luxury retail despite transacting entirely in Ghana,” he said.

Dr Asiama stressed that this practice not only contravenes Ghana’s legal tender laws but also undermines public confidence in the cedi.

“This practice not only violates the legal tender laws but also erodes confidence in the cedi,” he cautioned.

He further highlighted concerns over the growing mismatch between foreign exchange inflows and domestic reinvestment.

“Even more concerning, colleagues, is the mixed match between forex inflows and domestic reinvestment. While exports have risen, a significant portion is either held offshore and not channelled back into productive activities at home,” he noted.

The Governor called on businesses and stakeholders to strictly adhere to the use of the Cedi in all local transactions. He also urged regulatory authorities to step up enforcement efforts to curb the rising trend of unofficial dollarisation in the economy.

NPP Bans Campaign Posters Ahead Of Delegates’ Confab

    0

    Joseph Osei-Owusu

THE NEW Patriotic Party (NPP) has imposed a strict ban on all campaign-related materials, ahead of its July 19, 2025 National Annual Delegates’ Conference at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium.

Speaking at a press briefing yesterday in Accra, Chairman of the Planning Committee for the 2025 National Annual Delegates’ Conference, Joseph Osei-Owusu said the ban on the posters, banners and billboards among others are all aimed at maintaining order, neutrality, and focus during the event.

He said, “There shall be no billboards, banners, posters, flyers, T-shirts, or souvenirs with aspirant branding allowed at the venue or within Accra.”

According to the Chairman, the event which is expected to draw thousands of party delegates nationwide would ensure all forms of campaign activities are prohibited within the conference venue precinct.

“To enforce compliance, the party has set up a grounds and operations team with compliance monitors to patrol the conference grounds and surrounding areas. All prohibited campaign materials will be removed and destroyed by the team,” he added.

Mr. Osei-Owusu further stated that the move also seeks to create a level playing field, prioritising party unity and strategic decision making during the conference.

A total of 5,675 delegates are expected to attend the two-day National Annual Delegates’ Conference of the New Patriotic Party, as the race for the party’s flagbearer slot begins in earnest.

Among the key contenders for the race are Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who would face the likes of former Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, former Education Minister, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, and former Minister of Agriculture and current Member of Parliament for Abetifi, Dr. Bryan Acheampong.

Ghana must shift from raw commodity exports to value-driven growth – Dr Asiama

    0

The Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Johnson Pandit Asiama, has called for a bold shift in Ghana’s economic strategy, urging the nation to move beyond its dependence on raw commodity exports and embrace value addition and service-led growth as the pathway to sustainable prosperity.

Delivering the keynote address at the Graphic Business/Stanbic Bank Breakfast Meeting in Accra on Tuesday, 15th July, Dr Asiama argued that Ghana’s traditional export model is no longer sufficient for long-term development.

“In cocoa, as we all say and as we all know, it is time to scale up value-added processing, the branding and retail export chains,” he noted.

While acknowledging that commodity production will remain critical to the economy, Dr Asiama stressed the need for local processing, downstream development, and targeted investments in high-growth sectors.

“In gold, we must accelerate efforts towards in-country refining and bullion storage. Steps are already underway to push that agenda,” he revealed.

On the oil and gas front, he emphasised that Ghana can no longer afford to delay downstream industrialisation.

“Investment in the petrochemical industry is now a clear imperative,” Dr Asiama said.

Beyond the traditional sectors, he highlighted the vast potential of non-traditional exports and high-value services as growth drivers for Ghana’s future economy.

“Ghana has an untapped edge in information technology, in digital finance, in education services, in architecture, and in our creative industries,” he pointed out.

Dr Asiama warned that failing to develop these emerging sectors would mean missing out on both economic gains and employment opportunities.

“Loss of potential abounds. With the right regulatory support and market access framework, these sectors can generate stable forex, create high-quality jobs, and diversify our revenue streams,” he concluded.

Ghana’s President scraps fuel allowances for all political appointees

    0

All political appointees under President John Dramani Mahama’s current administration will no longer receive fuel allowances or allocations, with immediate effect.

This announcement was made in a statement dated Tuesday, 15th July, and signed by the Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu.

According to the statement, this decision forms part of the government’s renewed commitment to reducing public expenditure and channelling resources into critical sectors of national development.

“This latest cost-cutting measure follows sweeping reductions in the size of government through the appointment of fewer ministers and a leaner staff at the Office of the President,” the statement read.

The directive also includes the cancellation of satellite television subscriptions at the Presidency and other government establishments. The move, the statement noted, is intended to reflect the principle of shared sacrifice between the government and the citizenry.

“The President believes that leadership must also bear its part of the sacrifices it is calling on the people to make,” the statement added, reaffirming President Mahama’s belief in setting the tone from the top.

The government has in recent weeks introduced several measures aimed at curbing unnecessary expenditure. These include limiting the number of presidential staffers and ministerial appointments, and now, eliminating fuel benefits for appointees.

The latest move is expected to bolster fiscal discipline, promote responsible governance, and serve as a symbol of accountability at a time when economic prudence is crucial.

My boyfriend makes me send him my nude pictures but I want to stop

    0

File photo of a worried woman File photo of a worried woman

    Dear GhanaWeb,

I’m a 23-year old lady dating a 32-year old man. We have dated over a year now. He’s the one taking care of me in the university and my parents too are supportive. I am in level 200; I was in the university already before we met.

My boyfriend likes to talk a lot and complain about everything. He says I’m young and he keeps trying to teach me how to live my life everyday.

He always complains about everything I do. He doesn’t want me to even have any friend. He comes to my house every Saturday only to go through my phone and see who I’m talking to.

If he doesn’t see anything, he would say I’ve deleted them but I’ve not even deleted anything before. If he sees that I’m even texting another female, he would say she would be a bad influence on me.

I am enduring everything but the one that is very worrying to me is that I have to send him my naked pictures every blessed day. It’s a routine!

I have to do it every morning before leaving home and when I return in the afternoon or in the evening. If I fail, he would get angry. No matter where I am, I have to return home. If I don’t do it, it means I am somewhere and this makes him angry.

According to him, he uses my naked pictures to check whether I’m home or not. I have to send it in different styles. Sometimes he would describe how he wants me to take the pictures and I have to comply.

It’s very stressful. Sometimes from 6pm, I can be sending different styles till maybe 10pm because he would keep saying, “I didn’t take it well or I should take it in a particular way”.

When I complain that I am tired, he would threaten to cheat on me arguing that I don’t love him.

He always says there are so many porn sites for him to visit and many ladies desperately looking to date him, so I should be grateful he is asking for my nudes. I am so tired but I don’t know what to do.

He won’t listen to anything I say. Sometimes, I just want to block him everywhere but he would come to the school to talk a full bucket. I’m not happy at all; I can’t even learn. My GPA has reduced ever since I met him but he thinks he’s helping me.

What should I do for this to stop? What if he uses the nude pictures against me one day? What do you advise I should do?
