Register all mining machinery by August 1 – Interior Ministry issues ultimatum

0

All machinery used in mining activities must be registered with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) by August 1, 2025, the Ministry for the Interior has directed.

It warned that equipment that remained unregistered after the deadline would be confiscated by the state.

“The Ghana Police Service and DVLA have been directed to enforce this directive from August 2, 2025, onward rigorously,” a statement signed by the Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, said.

Reform

The move is part of the government’s efforts to reform the mining sector and track the activities of mining entities to help contain illegal mining in the country.

The statement advised the public, especially those who used mining machinery, to take note and comply with the directive.

“The Ministry of the Interior is committed to ensuring internal security and the maintenance of law and order in the country,” it emphasised.

Since assumption of office, the government has taken steps to deal with illegal mining, otherwise known as galamsey, in the country.

In line with that, there have been a series of arrests and the confiscation of machinery.

Earlier in May this year, the government directed owners and operators of excavators to register the equipment with the DVLA within two weeks or have them confiscated by the state.

The Chief Executive Officer of DVLA, Julius Neequaye Kotey, who gave the directive, had said that effective June 1 this year, any unregistered excavator would be confiscated.

Briefing

At a media briefing in Accra, Mr Kotey stressed that after the two-week ultimatum, the police and the DVLA’s operational team would confiscate any excavator at any mining site or in commercial use, which has not been registered with the DVLA.

Additionally, he said, the DVLA, in collaboration with other state agencies such as the Minerals Commission, National Security, the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority, and the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority, had started registering and tagging all new excavators coming into the country.

“This exercise is to enable the identification of every excavator and equipment that enters the country and to trace their ownership, including their operations, to curb the phenomenon of unregistered excavators and farm equipment in the system, which cannot be tracked for their activities,” he said.

He added that the inter-agency collaboration was meant to facilitate the government’s effort to fight illegal mining.

Perez Musik said gospel artistes face spiritual and physical attacks Perez Musik said gospel artistes face spiritual and physical attacks

Gospel singer Perez Musik has stated that both spiritual and physical attacks are a normal part of the gospel music industry.

His comments follow a recent revelation by fellow gospel artiste Cwesi Oteng, who said he experienced spiritual attacks early in his career.

Cwesi Oteng shared this during an appearance on Joy Prime TV, where he explained that some people targeted his music and albums spiritually because his style was changing the Ghanaian gospel music scene.

Perez Musik when asked about the attacks in the industry on Joy Prime TV’s Changes aired on July 15, 2025, Perez Musik shared his perspective on the issue.

According to him, such attacks, whether spiritual or physical, are not unusual for gospel artistes.

He explained that people often try to bring others down, especially when they don’t fully understand them.

“Attacks are normal. The attacks are many, some of them are physical, some of them are spiritual. Some people would slander you…When you are a mystery to people, they always try to figure out a way to get to you. So, sometimes it’s best to remain the mystery that they know you for because when you talk too much or you show too much you give them a lot to be able to get to you.

“Spiritually I would not say they attacked me, but those things happen. But I don’t focus on such things. He who lives in me is greater than he who lives in this world,” Perez Musik stated.

KAA’s ‘Big Bang’ enters NPP flagbearer race in style

0

Former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and former Press Secretary to former President Kufuor, Ing. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, has re-entered the political spotlight with a bold move ahead of the party’s next flagbearership contest.

Popularly known as KAA, the respected engineer and politician is putting finishing touches to his expansive Campaign Headquarters at Foire Heights, located on the Ring Road Central in Accra, signalling his intent to return with renewed vigor and purpose.

The move is being interpreted by political observers as a strategic step in positioning himself strongly for the upcoming NPP race.

This “big bang” re-entry appears keen to project readiness, vision, and a serious commitment to the party’s future.

The location, size, and timing of the official announcement further reinforce speculations that his campaign machinery is being revived for a high-impact rollout.

In remarks to the media, KAA stated that the NPP — and Ghana as a whole — require a deep reorientation in order to get back to our Roots.

“It’s time to recalibrate both party and country. We need to renew ourselves and redefine what party politics and governance stands for; essentially for the welfare of the underprivileged in society,” he said.

According to him, Ghana’s challenges call for a new kind of political leadership — one that is compassionate, courageous, and committed more to our collective welfare rather than personal gain.

“Ghana needs a leader with the vitality and versatility to confront today’s realities and shape a better future,” he added.

Agona West NPP executives reject suspension of parliamentary candidate

0

A group of constituency executives of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Agona West has rejected the reported suspension of the party’s 2024 parliamentary candidate, Christopher Arthur, describing it as invalid and procedurally flawed.

Earlier, a letter jointly signed by the constituency chairman and secretary announced that Arthur had been suspended pending a final decision by the Constituency Disciplinary Committee.

The suspension was based on allegations that he violated a directive from the NPP General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua, which barred aspirants from mobilising or engaging party structures for internal campaign activities.

Arthur was specifically accused of organising an electoral area meeting on Sunday, July 6, 2025, in defiance of party guidelines.

However, in a counterstatement, six constituency officers—including Deputy Secretary Patience Abban, Organiser David Essandoh, and Nasara Coordinator Haruna Rashid Osman—disputed the legitimacy of the action.

They claimed that the suspension of both Mr Arthur and Yaahem Electoral Area Coordinator, Rigs Mohammed, for their campaign support for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia lacked merit and due process.

“No such decision has been made by the Constituency Executive Committee at any meeting,” the statement read. “The appropriate processes and consultations were not followed before the issuance of the suspension letter.”

The group insists that the suspension was unilaterally executed and called on the party leadership to intervene to ensure procedural fairness and internal cohesion.

Arts, culture showcased at launch of Asogli Teza 2025

0

By Frank Kwame Abbor

Ho, July 16, GNA – This year’s celebration Asogli Teza festival has officially been launched in Ho, with a showcase of arts and culture and emphasising their role national cohesion, identity preservation and socio-political transformation.

The event, held on July 14, 2025, in Ho, was steeped in the cultural wealth of the Asogli State, presenting a vibrant tapestry of Ewe tradition woven into the national narrative of unity and purposeful development.

The festival will be celebrated on the Together in Honesty and Purpose, We Build a Just, Peaceful, Prosperous Nation,” and the theme resonates profoundly within the aesthetics and cultural elements showcased at the festival launch.

Every display from the rhythm of the drums to the dignity of the royal regalia was not just a performance, but a coded message on the values of truth, peace, justice, and collective identity.

The ceremony transformed art into a civic message, and culture into a vessel for ethical renewal.

Mr. James Gunu, the Volta Regional Minister, described the festival as “a rallying point for development and social cohesion.”

He reinforced the idea that culture, when appropriately harnessed, functions as a soft power in the pursuit of peacebuilding, civic education, and democratic growth.

In appreciating the arts, one must first note the symbolism embodied in the colourful display of traditional attire, the kente, batakari, and hand-woven fabrics worn by chiefs, performers, and community members alike.

These garments are not merely decorative. They are carriers of philosophy, clan identity, and ancestral knowledge. Their prominence at the launch attests to a deliberate reclaiming of indigenous expression as central to modern public life.

The performances by groups such as the Asogli Asafo, Kekeli Cultural Group, and Ho Bankoe Zibo Group served as living archives of heritage, capturing in dance and drum the historical experiences of migration, conflict, reconciliation, and community bonding.

These acts, rooted in oral tradition, remind audiences that cultural knowledge remains a dynamic process, constantly renewed through intergenerational participation.

Importantly, the launch event did not present culture as static nostalgia, but as a framework for critical engagement with the present.

Through the aesthetic excellence of the arts on display, the people of Asogli called attention to the need for a peaceful and just society, where purpose, integrity, and service are the core pillars of governance and development.

Togbe Adzie Lãkle Howusu, Divisional Chief of Ho-Dome, observed that the unity and cultural pride among the youth echoes a vital educational message.

By situating the youth at the centre of cultural transmission, the Asogli State reaffirms its investment in sustainability, moral discipline, and social responsibility all necessary virtues for nation-building under the banner of honesty and purpose.

The event, which took place at a civic location like the GNAT Hall, further symbolised the convergence of traditional leadership, state institutions, and the public in a shared space of cultural diplomacy.

At the launching were stakeholders from across the region, chiefs, queens, government officials, corporate actors, and security services, and this created a multidimensional dialogue on development through the lens of culture.

In appreciating the ceremony’s visual and performative richness, one must also commend the organisational detail, choreography, and coordination that went into creating such an immersive experience. The launch balanced solemn tradition with modern event management, demonstrating that cultural celebration can be both ancient in form and contemporary in execution.

Moreover, the linguistic, musical, and visual expressions on display affirm that the arts are not marginal to society but central to the construction of meaning, values, and collective aspirations.

The themes embedded in the dance steps, the drum language, and the symbolic artefacts form a unique grammar of cultural advocacy.

The arts, as demonstrated at the Asogli Teza launch, are instruments for social dialogue and participatory governance. They help communities to articulate grievances, celebrate achievements, and imagine futures anchored in justice, peace, and prosperity. In this sense, the event was both a cultural showcase and a civic classroom.

As the launch sets the tone for the full celebration in September, it invites Ghanaians to see festivals not merely as tourist attractions, but as strategic platforms for cultural diplomacy, youth mentorship, and moral reflection.

The fusion of aesthetics with purposeful messaging at this launch must be studied, replicated, and scaled across the country.

Fuel allowance cut a mere distraction from GH¢1 energy levy — Collins Adomako-Mensah

0

Collins Adomako-Mensah is the Deputy Ranking Member of the Energy Committee of Parliament Collins Adomako-Mensah is the Deputy Ranking Member of the Energy Committee of Parliament

Deputy Ranking Member of the Energy Committee and Member of Parliament for Afigya Kwabre North constituency, Collins Adomako-Mensah, has dismissed President Mahama’s directive of scrapping fuel allowances for government appointees as a move aimed at calming public outrage over the new GH¢1 per litre energy sector levy.

Speaking to GhOne TV on Tuesday, July 15, he questioned the fiscal impact of the President’s directive, calling for transparency on how much the government was previously spending on fuel for its appointees and how much would be saved now.

“Government must tell us the actual figures. How much money was being spent on fuel for appointees, and what impact will this directive have?” he questioned.

According to him, the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) is set to commence the implementation of the controversial GH¢1 levy on every litre of fuel sold starting July 16, a policy expected to generate GH₵5.7 billion in revenue.

He argued that this significant cost burden on Ghanaians far outweighs the negligible savings from the cancelled fuel allowances for government officials.

“This directive is just a political gimmick to reduce the tension in the system. What Ghanaians need to focus on is the real story, the GRA’s implementation of this levy that will directly affect every fuel consumer,” he stated.

Responding to a question that fuel prices have dropped and the new levy would have minimal impact, He strongly disagreed, arguing that using the drop in prices as a basis to introduce a levy makes little economic sense and only compounds the financial pressure on citizens.

“The claim that prices have dropped, so the levy shouldn’t be a concern, is misleading. If anything, the gains from improved exchange rates should ease the burden on consumers, not add to it,” he said.

He stressed that the decision by the President to cancel appointees’ fuel allowances will not pacify the public once the levy kicks in.

“This letter changes nothing. Ghanaians will get angry, and that anger will be fully felt tomorrow,” he said.

You are no longer in the position of President; please stop using state emblems – Koku Anyidoho Informs Akufo-Addo

0

Former Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Samuel Koku Anyidoho, has raised concerns over former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s use of Ghana’s Coat of Arms in an official statement released on Monday, July 14, 2025.

The statement from the Office of the former President was issued to deny recent media reports claiming that Akufo-Addo was attempting to influence the upcoming New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Delegates Conference.

Mahama’s silence on Ablekuma North chaos troubling – Miracles

0

Aide to former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has sharply criticised  President John Dramani Mahama for his continued silence following the violent disturbances that marred the parliamentary rerun in the Ablekuma North constituency on Friday, July 11, 2025.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Wednesday, July 16, he condemned the attacks, emphasising that violence has no place in Ghana’s democratic process and should be condemned by all, regardless of political affiliation.

“It is an unfortunate situation. I am completely against violence in any form, and I am of the view that bullets know no political colours. It has been six days and the president is yet to make a simple comment on it,” he stated.

He expressed disappointment at the silence from President Mahama, describing it as deeply worrying, especially when journalists, politicians, and even innocent civilians, including a woman, were assaulted in broad daylight.

“At the scene, journalists were beaten, politicians, ordinary people, and even a lady was slapped, and we have the president completely quiet as if he doesn’t live in the country and doesn’t know what is going on. Even just a tweet or Facebook post will do,” he added.

According to him, such silence from a statesman of Mr. Mahama’s stature undermines public confidence and fails to show solidarity with victims of political violence.

“Those things are very cautious to do for your people. If the president is listening, I will urge him to do so because it is not too late. It will be a blot on his conscience if he doesn’t because I will not stop talking about it,” he stressed.

The parliamentary rerun in the Ablekuma North constituency turned chaotic when a group of unidentified macho men stormed the St. Peter’s polling centre, causing confusion and disrupting the voting process.

Channel One News’s Jude Duncan reported that  Former Fisheries Minister Mavis Hawa Koomson was attacked in the fracas.

Eyewitnesses said the group arrived in a well-coordinated fashion, triggering panic among voters and electoral officials. The ensuing violence led to a temporary suspension of voting activities until security personnel intervened to restore order.

In response to the incident, the Accra Regional Police Command released a statement signed by Superintendent Juliana Obeng, Head of the Public Affairs Unit, assuring the public of thorough investigations.

ECG’s full compliance with Cash Waterfall Mechanism boosting power stability

0

The Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, has announced that the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has complied with directives aimed at ensuring transparency, efficiency, and regular cash flow within Ghana’s power sector.

Speaking at the government accountability series on Wednesday, July 16, the Minister revealed that in February 2025, he instructed ECG to adhere strictly to the Cash Waterfall Mechanism (CWM), a financial framework designed to ensure equitable and timely distribution of revenue across all players in the power value chain.

“To bring about efficiency and compliance, in February 2025, I directed that ECG fully comply with the Cash Waterfall Mechanism. I also directed that they operate a single holding account, and that account should be opened with Ghana Commercial Bank, a state-owned bank,” Jinapor stated.

According to the Minister, ECG has since met all the conditions, which has significantly improved the flow of funds to key institutions including independent power producers (IPPs), fuel suppliers, GRIDCo, and the Volta River Authority (VRA).

“This is ensuring that so far there is constant flow of cash to electricity generators, fuel suppliers, GRIDCo, VRA, and all power sector players,” he noted.

The compliance, Jinapor added, has played a critical role in the relative stability of electricity supply across the country in recent months.

“The mechanism puts in place a minimum guarantee when it comes to payments to the IPPs. This has also contributed largely to the stable power that we currently experience,” he said.

Ghana tops global real policy rate rankings at 14.3%

0

Ghana now has the world's highest real interest rate of 14.3% Ghana now has the world’s highest real interest rate of 14.3%

Fitch Solutions has announced that Ghana currently holds the highest real policy rate globally, at 14.3%, according to its latest outlook report.

This figure reflects a sharp drop in inflation amid a still-elevated benchmark interest rate. Ghana’s headline inflation eased to 13.7% in June this year, while the Bank of Ghana maintained its policy rate at 28% since March.

The report notes that the combination of slowing inflation, strong external buffers, and rising investor appetite for emerging market yields supports the case for imminent monetary easing.

“This continues to attract yield-seeking investors, particularly in the context of policy loosening in developed markets. However, high gold prices and the accumulation of FX reserves suggest the BoG can begin cutting rates without triggering significant depreciation of the cedi,” Fitch stated.

Fitch Solutions projects that the central bank will initiate a policy easing cycle in September, with a cumulative 200 basis-point cut expected by year-end bringing the rate down to 26%.

The firm also observed that the recent disinflationary trend increases the likelihood of an earlier rate cut.

“Given the sharp drop in inflation combined with robust reserves and muted global energy prices, we cannot rule out a rate cut in July,” Fitch added.

In response to the latest data, Fitch Solutions has revised its inflation outlook downward. Average inflation is now forecast at 15.4% for 2025 and 12.2% for 2026, down from previous projections of 17.1% and 13.9%, respectively.

President Mahama declares galamsey menace a national emergency

0

By Iddi Yire

Accra, July 16, GNA – President John Dramani Mahama has declared the menace of illegal mining (galamsey) in the country as a national emergency due to its severe environmental, social, and economic consequences.

The President made the declaration in his remarks at Juaboso at a durbar of the Chiefs and People of the Western North Region during his Thank You Tour of the Region.

The nationwide Thank You Tour is to enable the President express gratitude to Ghanaians for their massive support for him, during the 2024 general election.

“Our forests, rivers and green belts are national treasures. But we are alarmed by the environmental destruction that is reported across Awaso, Dadiaso, and Sewfi Ahwiaso, mainly due to illegal mining. I must be honest, this is a national emergency,” President Mahama said.

He noted that the National Task Force would continue its efforts to halt illegal mining in the nation’s forest reserves and water bodies.

“I have also noted the activities of illegal anti-Galamsey task forces that go around extorting money from legitimate small-scale mining companies,” he said.

“I have requested that the authorities arrest and prosecute any individuals involved in this illegal anti-Galamsey activity.”

The President said in addition, they were establishing a forward operating base of the Ghana Armed Forces in Punikrom, as requested by the Chiefs of the Western North Region, to respond swiftly to security threats and border-related crimes.

He reiterated that peace was a precondition for development.

BoG Cautions Against High Dollar Use

Dr. Johnson Pandit Asiama

The Governor for the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr. Johnson Pandit Asiama, has raised concerns over the use of foreign currencies for domestic transactions in the country.

Speaking at the Graphic Business Breakfast Meeting held in Accra, the Governor mentioned that the growing trend of dollarisation is a threat to the country’s monetary stability.

He said, “We are still grappling with a deep-rooted culture of dollarisation. Too many businesses continue to price in dollars in real estate, education, and luxury retail despite transacting entirely in Ghana”.

He stressed that the practice is a violation of the money laws and also destroys confidence in the cedi.

“This practice not only violates the legal tender laws but also erodes confidence in the Cedi,” he stated.

He further highlighted concerns over the growing mismatch between forex inflow and domestic reinvestment.

“Even more concerning, is the mixed match between forex inflows and domestic reinvestment. While exports have risen, a significant portion is either held offshore or not channelled back into productive activities at home,” he stated.

The Governor used the opportunity to call on businesses and stakeholders to strictly adhere to the use of the Cedi in all local transactions.

He also urged regulatory authorities to step up enforcement efforts to curb the rising trend of unofficial dollarisation in the economy.

The investment price of the Bank of Ghana’s (BoG) gold coins continues to decline, a development attributed to the Ghana cedi’s appreciation against the US dollar.

The Central Bank introduced these gold coins as a strategic measure to discourage the hoarding of US dollars and absorb excess liquidity in the market, ultimately aiming to strengthen the cedi against major foreign currencies.

As of Wednesday, July 16, 2025, the BoG reported the following updated prices for its gold coins:

• The 0.25 oz coin is now selling at GH¢9,620.38, down from GH¢9,638.11 on July 15, 2025.

• The 0.50 oz coin is priced at GH¢18,523.98, down from GH¢18,555.44.

• The 1.00 oz coin is selling for GH¢36,373.75, down from GH¢36,436.67.

The Ghana gold coin is available in three denominations: one-ounce, half-ounce, and quarter-ounce, and can be purchased through commercial banks.

ECG sees significant growth in revenue generation – John Jinapor

0

Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, has revealed that the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has recorded an increase in revenue generation in recent months.

According to him, the company’s monthly revenue generation has increased significantly.

Speaking at the Government’s Accountability Series held at the Jubilee House on Wednesday, July 16, Mr Jinapor credited the progress to his ministry’s sustained efforts since assuming responsibility for the energy sector six months ago.

“ECG’s monthly revenue is witnessing some significant increase, this increase represents about a 47.3% increase as compared to the same period last year. And so as you can see, we are seeing some real significant increase in revenues.”

However, the Minister cautioned that while the revenue gains are encouraging, they remain insufficient to fully address the broader challenges confronting the country’s electricity sector.

He underscored the need for innovative and diversified funding mechanisms to support long-term infrastructure development, reliability, and sustainability.

“Because of the huge challenges and the debt that we encountered, we need to pursue additional policy measures to ensure that we put the power sector on track.”

Since assuming office in January, the government has continued to explore ways to stabilise the country’s energy sector.

One such initiative is the introduction of a GHC1 fuel levy, which, according to the government, will be used to address challenges within the sector and ensure a stable supply of electricity.

Buhari death don create political vacuum for Northern Nigeria?

0

Di death of former Nigerian president, Muhammadu Buhari, don get significant impact for di kontri political scene, especially for di northern region.

Sabi pipo say im death fit start beta struggle for power for di north as di 2027 general elections dey draw nearer.

For dis region, dem bin dey see Buhari was as not just ordinary politician, but as bridge wey connect di poor to di political elite.

Many believe say e inherited im grassroots support base from di late president, Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, as e develop a cult-like following among di urban and rural poor (wey dem dey call di “talakawa” for Hausa language).

Buhari image as a man of integrity bin fetch am massive 12 million votes, mostly from di north, during di 2011 presidential election.

Di former major general who im supporters dey call “Sai Baba”, bin achieve dis wit limited resources and despite say e no get nationwide political operation.

E later lead im opposition All Progressives Congress to ogbonge victory for di 2015 presidential election, as e win 15.4 million votes and beat di incumbent president, Goodluck Jonathan, by more dan 2.5 million votes.

Dis mark di turning point for Buhari who bicom di most powerful politician for di kontri.

“I belong to everybody, and I belong to nobody,” e tok for im 2015 inaugural speech.

Dis statement shock di political class for Nigeria, as e mean say tins no go be business as usual for dose wey place personal ambition bifor ideology.

“Im speech shock di elitist class and plenty of dem bin run comot from di kontri afta dat,” Professor Khalid Aliyu, di Secretary-General of Jama’atu Nasril Islam, JNI, tok.

Gimba Kakanda, Senior Special Assistant to di President on Research and Analytics, say Buhari bin surprise many pipo who bin initially dismiss am as a parochial northerner or religious extremist wey no get intention to unite di kontri.

“E show say e dey willing to engage and work wit all parts of di federation. Di 2015 speech bin capture di essence of dat transformation and intent,” e tok.

However, no be evribody bin dey convinced.

Journalist Nicholas Ibekwe believe say Buhari statement later turn out to be just ordinary catchy quote.

“E no live up to am wen e dey for power. Most of di important positions na northerners e give dem to. So, wetin e bin really mean?” e tok.

“Buhari na just fortunate politician wey get political charisma, but e neva at any time rally di north for a particular course outside of im interest.”

Man of integrity

Although Buhari bin come under fire for im first term for office sake of im handling of security, economic and corruption issues, e still win ogbonge victory for di 2019 elections. Again, most of im vote base come from di north.

For di 2023 presidential election, as e dey prepare to comot from office, Buhari again make history. Dis time e refuse to endorse any of di candidates. Dis na di first time wey sitting president go openly refuse to support anybodi for im party primary election.

Instead, e declare say e go support whoever win di party ticket, to create level playing field and throw di race open.

“E good say e bin chose to dey neutral and to only be a guide. E bin no want to interfer for pipo affairs,” JNI Professor Aliyu tok.

However, some bin tink say by doing dat, e don squander opportunity to solidify im own political strength.

As e leave office two years ago, Buhari bin dey vocal about im own future as e tok say e no want to be disturbed.

E no be surprise say afta e hand over to President Bola Tinubu, he retire to im hometown for Katsina state and no too dey appear for public.

“Im death go create very big vacuum. We see how afta e move to Daura, di place turn to political pilgrimage wit pipo looking for im for guidance and advice,” Professor Aliyu tok.

“Im core support base fit don diminish towards di end of im tenure, but significant number of di pipo wey believe in him still dey loyal to di very end,” Senior Special Assistant Kakanda tok.

“Dat kind of loyalty dey rare, and e show di depth of di connection e bin get wit ordinary pipo.”

But journalist Ibekwe believe say Buhari death no go leave political vacuum for northern Nigeria.

“Im supporters bin don always be for only him,” e tok.

“Weneva e no stand for election, dem bin vote differently for oda pipo.”

2027 elections

As di formidable figure for northern politics dey buried on Tuesday, many pipo dey ask how dis go affect di chances of im All Progressives Congress party for di 2027 general election.

Kakanda believen say im passing go spark power shift for di north.

“We dey likely to witness a transition toward a multipolar configuration. Power and influence for di North go now dey more fragmented, sake of diversity of sub-regional and ethnic actors rada dan one single dominant figure,” e tok.

Concerns dey say President Tinubu fit struggle to consolidate im support for di north without Buhari clout.

Dose wey bin rely heavily on im popularity go now need to work extra hard to build dia own alliances and mend political fences.

Electoral Violence: Stop the use of ‘macho men’ during elections

Nana Romeo accused politicians of using macho men to intimidate voters Nana Romeo accused politicians of using macho men to intimidate voters

Media personality and entertainment pundit Nana Romeo has cautioned against the use of bodybuilders, popularly known as ‘macho men’, by politicians, especially during elections.

Speaking during a discussion on UTV, Romeo argued that political parties routinely hire these muscular enforcers to intimidate voters and opposition supporters, sometimes even engaging in violent attacks.

“Politicians have a habit of calling these men to escort them during elections to intimidate individuals. I don’t know how much they are being paid, because some of them don’t even think about what they are doing.

“Their habit of attacking individuals could get someone killed. Even the steroids they take to gain muscles can affect their health,” he warned.

He cited the electoral violence during the Ablekuma North constituency rerun on July 11, 2025 where the former MP for Awutu Senya East, Hawa Koomson, was attacked. According to Romeo, the situation could have turned tragic.

“What happened was very bad. If the police hadn’t intervened, they could have killed her,” he said.

Romeo also criticised the hypocrisy of some politicians, accusing them of condemning such acts while in opposition, only to repeat them once in power.

“The sad thing is that when another political party comes into power, they do the same thing. They condemn it one year, then turn around and do the same the next.”

He further condemned certain government appointees for mocking the incident on social media.

“Even after this, we’re seeing posts from some government appointees giving these men titles and joking about the incident.”

Finally, Romeo expressed disappointment in the Ghana Police Service saying, “Up till now, they haven’t been able to arrest anyone in connection with the incident.”

Goaso Astroturf cost government GH¢4.2m, Mim facility privately funded – Kofi Adams

The Goaso Astroturf was commissioned in December 2024 The Goaso Astroturf was commissioned in December 2024

Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has revealed that while the Goaso Astroturf was constructed at a cost of GH¢4,240,337, the Mim Astroturf was fully sponsored and built by a private entity, without any government funding.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, Adams provided the breakdown after questions were raised about the government’s resource commitment to the two facilities.

“Examination of data available in the Ministry of Sports and recreation indicates that the Goaso Astroturf was constructed by the government of Ghana at a cost of GH¢4,240,337. However, the Mim Astroturf was sponsored and constructed by a private entity of which the government of Ghana had no resource commitment in terms of funding,” he said.

His comments come months after the official commissioning of the Goaso Astroturf on 30th December 2024.

The ceremony marked the completion of the modern facility expected to boost football and other sports in the Asunafo North Municipality and the wider Ahafo Region.

The facility was officially handed over to the National Sports Authority (NSA) in the Ahafo Region, with Festus Boffah assuring the community of proper maintenance to ensure its long-term use for youth development, local teams, schools, and professional sporting events.

When pressed further about the Mim AstroTurf, which also serves the Asunafo North area, Kofi Adams clarified that the project was not under his ministry’s purview.

“The Mim AstroTurf in the Asunafo North is not owned by the ministry. I will therefore request the honourable member of parliament for Asunafo North to redirect the question to the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs for the needed responses,” he added.

Mali military leader extend presidential rule, remove term limit… Who else fit follow?

0

Despite im promise to return democracy to im country, Mali military leader, General Assimi Goita, don secure five-year presidential term from di transitional parliament and e no need to hold elections.

Di parliament approve di new bill last week, and di bill tok say 41-year-old General Goita fit renew im mandate “as many times as necessary” and until Mali dey “pacified”.

Dis don clear di general to lead di West African kontri until at least 2030.

Mali na one of di six kontris for di Sahel region – Mali, Chad, Guinea, Burkina Faso, Niger and Sudan – wey don all experience coups since 2020.

Sabi pipo say oda kontris wey bin get coups like Mali fit follow dia example now and suspend presidential elections.

Restoring democratic rule?

General Goita bin come to power in 2020 afta e comot former President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita for coup.

Less dan one year later, di general launch second coup to remove two civilians who been dey appointed sake of international pressure to bring Mali bak to democratic rule.

General Goita den push UN forces comot from im kontri and cut ties wit dia former colonial power France.

Neighbouring Burkina Faso and Niger, who bin also experience military-led coups for 2022 and 2023 respectively, follow Mali example to stop dia relationship wit France and make friends wit Russia.

Di three kontris later withdraw dia membership from di Economic Community of West Africa States (ECOWAS), to avoid pressure to restore democratic rule.

General Goita now na di leader of di Alliance of the Sahel States (AES) wey Mali, Burkino Faso and Niger form new.

As e don show say e sabi how to do political manoeuvring, sabi pipo say Goita dey chart course for Burkina Faso military leader, Captain Ibrahim Traore, and di one for Niger General Abdourahmane Tchiane.

“Wit dia effective use of misinformation and propaganda especially tru social media, dem don dey warm dia way into di hearts of pipo, especially di youths even for outside dia kontris,” Kabiru Adamu, security expert and Executive Director of Beacon Security and Intelligence, tok about di three leaders.

Adamu say Mali na di symbol of di complex social and political issues wey dey drive insecurity for di Sahel region, including attacks by armed Islamic groups, communal violence, human rights concerns and economic challenges.

E say di military-led govment for Mali capital Bamako so far don fail to achieve any of dia stated objectives around national security, institutional reform and return to democratic rule.

Instead, e dey use populism and a dislike of French control to stay in power.

“But dis no go last,” Adamu warn.

“Crisis dey shele for Mali and e go get ogbonge consequences for di region,” e tok.

Opposition crackdown

Since e enta power, General Goita don dey look for help from Russia to quench di jihadist violence by groups wey get link with di Islamic State (IS) and Al-Qaeda.

For im continued crackdown on dissent, di military junta don also banned evri political party for Mali.

Since e introduce di ban in May, e don put two opposition leaders for detention afta a rare pro-democracy protest.

Paul Ejime, global affairs analyst and publisher of PGlobalMedia.com, say dem dey suppress di media for Mali and dia neighbouring kontris.

E say afta Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger bin withdraw from ECOWAS, e dey clear say di three kontris want to dey operate witout pressure to return to civilian rule.

“From wetin dey happen for Mali, e show say di military govment na opportunist power grabbers,” e tok.

“You can see di massive ongoing repression.”

However, Ejime say although di junta dey currently ride di wave of anti-French sentiment, opposition to dia rule dey increase.

International affairs expert and media consultant, Ilyasu Gadu, describe wetin dey happen for Mali as “worrying and disturbing development”.

“Di fear be say e go dey contagious and e go spread to di oda neighbours,” e tok.

“If you check out di political developments for all di three kontris, na always di same.

“Dem bin come like say dem be messiah, claiming say dem wan to restore order, preying on di ill-feelings of di pipo against dia democratic goment and promising wetin dem no fit fulfil, just to get into power.”

Di head of Niger’s military govment General Abdourahamane Tiani (R) and im Mali counterpart Gen. Assimi Goita (L). Both kontris don cut dia relationship wit ECOWAS.

Busia Institute Slams Ablekuma North Violence

0

The Busia Institute for Rural and Democratic Development (BIRDD) has “unequivocally condemned the acts of violence and lawlessness that marred the recent re-run elections in the Ablekuma North Constituency of the Greater Accra Region.”

Democracy thrives on the free exchange of ideas and the sanctity of choice, the institute observed in a press release, adding that “elections must be open, transparent, and fair, and thereby offering candidates the opportunity to present their platforms and citizens the right to vote without fear, coercion, or manipulation.”

In a functioning democracy, the victor earns a credible mandate, while the defeated concedes with dignity, the release signed by Anane Agyei, Executive Director of BIRDD, continued.

What transpired in Ablekuma North, however, gravely undermines these foundational principles, according to the Busia Institute.

“When elections are tainted by violence, they cease to be democratic exercises—they become battlegrounds.

“Of particular concern is the reported inaction of security agencies, who stood by while individuals attacked journalists and innocent citizens. Even more troubling is the fact that none of the perpetrators—despite being visibly identified in widely circulated videos—have been arrested,” the Busia Institute lamented.

Such impunity not only weakens the legitimacy of our electoral processes but also threatens Ghana’s hard-won international reputation as a beacon of democratic stability in Africa, said the institute, which pointed out that “the violence in Ablekuma North casts a dark shadow over our democratic credentials and risks eroding public trust in our institutions.

“As an institute dedicated to the promotion of democracy and ethical leadership, BIRDD issues this strong condemnation of the violence and electoral anomalies.”

They called on the Inspector General of Police, the Electoral Commission, and all relevant security agencies to take swift and impartial action on the matter.

The individuals responsible must be held accountable without delay, the institute demanded, as it “extend our deepest sympathies to the victims of these heinous acts, and we commend the courage of journalists who continued their duties under perilous conditions.”

Furthermore, the institute urged the government, civil society, and the donor community to invest in preventive peacebuilding and civic education, particularly in electoral hotspots, noting that “these proactive measures are critical to averting violence in future elections. Failure to act decisively now risks reversing Ghana’s democratic gains and dragging the nation into an avoidable crisis.”

Drivers Threaten Sit-Down Strike In Sekondi-Takoradi

0

Joseph Simmons Cudjoe, GPRTU Chairman, Western Region

Members of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis and Jomoro Municipality of the Western Region have threatened to embark on a sit-down strike on Monday, July 21, 2025, over unauthorised transport operators in the area.

According to the drivers, they will take the action if the Effia-Kwesimintsim Municipal Assembly (EKMA) and Jomoro Municipal Assembly fail to remove the unauthorized transport operators at the Takoradi Jubilee Park and near the Elubo police station.

The chairman of the Regional GPRTU, Joseph Simmons Cudjoe, described the activities at the Takoradi Jubilee Park and around the Elubo Police station as a threat to both public safety and their operations.

He indicated that the government has provided a designated terminal at Abenbebom in Apremdo near Takoradi for all drivers operating within EKMA.

However, he said some of the drivers continue to operate illegally from the Takoradi Jubilee Park.

“If EKMA fails to remove drivers currently working illegally at the Jubilee Park, we will advise ourselves. We are law-abiding drivers; we will not take the law into our own hands. Instead, we will embark on a peaceful sit-down strike,” he pointed out.

He said, “All drivers operating from Agona Nkwanta, Kojokrom, Daboase, Sekondi, and Takoradi will not work on Monday, July 21, 2025″.

“The strike action will officially begin at 12:00 am on Monday. But prior to that, red bands will be tied at all terminals and on every vehicle across the metropolis to show how angry and serious we are about this issue,” he noted.

He added that if the assemblies fail to act, the protest will escalate to the regional and national levels.

“If our sit-down strike at the district levels do not yield any result, we will extend to all parts of the region and proceed to the national level,” he noted.

He revealed that the National Secretariat is fully aware of the situation and is behind the regional secretariat.

“The National Secretariat understand the challenges we are facing and are ready to support us every step of the way,” he noted.

He, then, called on the Western Regional Minister, the Ministry of Transport, and all authorities concerned to intervene and remove all drivers operating at all unauthorized places.

Suspended Chief Justice Torkornoo’s $10 Million ECOWAS Showdown Tests Ghana’s Democratic Pillars

0

The unprecedented lawsuit mounted by suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo against the Republic of Ghana at the ECOWAS Court of Justice is more than a personal quest for vindication—it’s a high-stakes constitutional drama unfolding on both domestic and regional stages.

Her demand for a staggering $10 million in compensation for alleged moral and reputational damages follows her suspension by President John Dramani Mahama on April 22, 2025.

This has thrust Ghana into an intense national debate about the very foundations of its democracy and the independence of its judiciary. This marks the first time in Ghana’s 68-year history that a sitting Chief Justice has faced the commencement of removal proceedings and responded with a regional legal action.

A Plea for Dignity

At the heart of Chief Justice Torkornoo’s ECOWAS suit is a powerful human element. She alleges her suspension violates her fundamental human rights to dignity, fair hearing, and fair conditions of work, as enshrined in Articles 5, 7, and 15 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights. Beyond the legal system, her filing paints a picture of a leader subjected to “immeasurable public ridicule,” and professional harm.

On June 25, 2025, in a televised address to the nation, Chief Justice Torkornoo highlighted the “unprecedented nature” of her situation, stating that the “perversion of law, rules, and due process… are driving the proceedings and this renders the proceedings unconstitutional.” Her personal narrative resonates with some Ghanaians, who are questioning whether due process is indeed being served or if there are politics at play.

This skepticism is not new. Recent Afrobarometer surveys indicate an alarming decline in public trust, with 62% of Ghanaians saying they have little or no trust in the courts, a sharp increase from 30% in 2005/06. Even more starkly, a staggering 97% of Ghanaians perceive judges and magistrates as corrupt, often citing this perception to the judiciary’s handling of politically sensitive cases.

Navigating Dual Jurisdictions

The decision to approach the ECOWAS Court while domestic proceedings are ongoing presents a fascinating legal tightrope walk. While Ghana’s Supreme Court dismissed Chief Justice Torkornoo’s injunction application on admissibility grounds—not the merits—it leaves substantive arguments regarding the legality of the process still pending at the national level..

The ECOWAS Court, as a human rights court of first instance, has a well-established jurisprudence of hearing cases even when parallel domestic proceedings are active, provided the case is not before another international court.

As private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu stated, “Under ECOWAS jurisprudence, having a case before a domestic court is not a bar to filing before the ECOWAS Court.” This principle stands in contrast to the stricter exhaustion requirements of some other international tribunals. It is outlined in cases like Registered Trustees of HEDA Resource Centre v. Republic of Nigeria (2021), showcases the ECOWAS Court’s commitment to ensuring access to regional human rights remedies.

However, some Ghanaian legal experts, including former Ghana School of Law Director Kwaku Ansah Asare, view the ECOWAS recourse as a misstep. He argues that Ghana’s 1992 Constitution, specifically Article 146, provides a clear framework for judicial removal, and that “Our procedures are firmly embedded in the High Court rules and the Evidence Act of 1975. ECOWAS does not have a sub-regional procedure that we are violating.”

He went as far as to suggest the Chief Justice is “shooting herself in the foot” and “worsening her own predicament through missteps.” This divergence of opinion underscores the complex interplay between national sovereignty and emerging regional legal frameworks in West Africa.

Political Undertones

President Mahama’s administration, represented by justices like Deputy Attorney General Justice Srem-Sai who confirmed the ECOWAS filing on July 4, 2025, maintains its actions are in strict adherence to Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution. The article dictates a process involving a prima facie case by the Council of State before a committee of inquiry is established.

While the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) emphasizes its commitment to constitutional fidelity, the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has largely maintained a watchful silence, highlighting the political risk of attacking the judiciary.

However, the public narrative is far less reserved. Many Ghanaians view the process through a political lens, fueled by past rhetoric.

“The Chief Justice’s removal is political. We heard President Mahama suggest the court is packed with NPP people and that his appointees should prepare to take over. It’s political,” said Ato Yawson, a Ghanaian law student, reflecting a common sentiment. This perception of political interference, if solidified by the ECOWAS ruling, could severely undermine the rule of law and democratic accountability, essential for both domestic stability and international standing.

The Commonwealth Lawyers Association (CLA) has also weighed in, highlighting concerns that “the power to suspend a judge may be abused to penalise or intimidate independent-minded judges and to prevent them from deciding cases.”

Apart from the legal and political spheres, Ghana’s judicial crisis carries tangible economic implications. Legal experts warn that prolonged legal battles and regulatory uncertainty could deter foreign direct investment (FDI), an essential component of Ghana’s industrialization plans.

Investor confidence hinges on predictable legal environments and a strong rule of law. A negative outcome at ECOWAS, or continued perception of judicial vulnerability, could pressure asset valuations and impact Ghana’s attractiveness as a market, despite its IMF-backed reforms.

The final ruling of the ECOWAS Court transcends Chief Justice Torkornoo’s fate. It will reshape the trajectory of judicial independence in Ghana, and set a powerful precedent of accountability for high-ranking officials in the West African nation. This decision will permanently define the future of justice and democratic governance across the African continent.

List of people EOCO is likely to investigate

0

The Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dr Akuritinga Ayine, has directed the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) to investigate the 36-page illegal mining (galamsey) report compiled by former Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Prof Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng.

The report, which was reportedly submitted to the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo administration in 2021, implicated a number of people in the then-government and political figures in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The then-government basically rubbished the report, stating that most of the allegations in it were the views of Prof Frimpong-Boateng and were not backed by evidence.

But now that the Attorney General has ordered that the EOCO investigates the report, the persons and the entities implicated in the report are likely to be investigated.

The report, which was addressed to the Chief of Staff and the Ghana Police Service, implicated some New Patriotic Party (NPP) members, including MPs and top government officials, as having been involved in the galamsey menace.

Portions of the report indicated that these MPs and government officials were either directly involved in galamsey or were using their powers to protect relatives who were involved in the menace.

The 36-page report implicated persons including the former MP for Manso Nkwanta, Joseph Albert Quarm; former Director of Operations at the Presidency, Laud Commey; former Executive Assistant and Head of Social Media at the Presidency, Charles Nii Teiko; and Frank Asiedu Bekoe, former Director of Political Affairs at the Office of the Chief of Staff.

Prof Frimpong-Boateng also accused the former Minister of Information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, of hatching a plot to bring him down over his (Frimpong-Boateng’s) fight against the menace.

Below is a full list of persons named in Prof Frimpong-Boateng’s report on galamsey and how he detailed their supposed involvements:

Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie aka Sir John (deceased):

In parts of his report, Prof Frimpon-Boateng noted that the late Sir John was actively giving out timber concessions even in forest reserves for logging.

He was also cited to have given forestry entry permits to mining companies, both large and small scale, including those of foreign nationals, for prospecting activities at a time when the president had put a ban on that activity.

Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko:

Leading member of the NPP, Gabby Otchere-Darko, was cited in the report as having called him (Prof Frimpong-Boateng) to inform him that he was a lawyer for Heritage Imperial Ltd, a company that was destroying the Krobo and Apaprama Forest Reserves and polluting River Offin.

Kojo Oppong Nkrumah:

Prof Frimpong Boateng, in the report, said that Oppong Nkrumah hatched a plot to bring him down over his (Frimpong-Boateng’s) fight against the menace.

According to Frimpong Boateng, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah gathered and incited a team of journalists to attack him and sabotage his work.

Yaw Osafo-Maafo:

According to Prof Frimpong-Boateng, the former Senior Minister, Yaw Osafo-Maafo, connived with some persons to accuse him of selling excavators and putting the proceeds in another person’s account.

He noted that the former Senior Minister covered up for John Ofori-Atta, then National Security Coordinator for the Central Region, and Ekow Ewusi.

Charles Owusu:

Charles Owusu, who was then Director of Operations at the Forestry Commission under Sir John, was accused of conniving to use Chinese gangs to do mining on behalf of Sir John.

He is also said to have called Prof Frimpong-Boateng during an operation at Bepotenten to claim some of the concessions and excavators.

Joseph Albert Quarm:

Joseph Albert Quarm, who is a former Member of Parliament for Manso Nkwanta, was cited in the report as having used his position as a member of the board of the Minerals Commission to acquire several dozens of large-scale concessions in his district for community mining purposes.

He is said to have sold these to private individuals for GH¢200,000 per concession.

Laud Commey, Charles Nii Teiko:

Laud Commey and Charles Nii Teiko, both former Jubilee House appointees, are said to have supported illegal mining or interfered with the fight against the menace.

S K Boafo:

SK Boafo, who was the Chairman of the Minerals Commission Board, was accused by Prof Frimpong-Boateng of supporting the position of the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources after the appointment of Kwaku Asomah-Cheremeh, against a community mining programme.

According to him, the ministry was angry that the IMCIM was at the forefront in matters concerning small-scale mining, which they said were among the functions of the Minerals Commission.

Prof Frimpong-Boateng also noted in his report that SK Boafo even blocked the MCE of Asante Akim Central from allowing the IMCIM to commission community mining sites in the area, threatening that she would lose her job if she did.

Frank Asiedu Bekoe (Protozoa):

Frank Bekoe, who was said to be working at the Office of the Chief of Staff, allegedly was one of the other ‘big men’ who called Prof Frimpong-Boateng in January 2021, after a taskforce entered a concession at Bepotenten for an operation to seize excavators and destroy galamsey sites.

According to Prof Frimpong-Boateng, Bekoe called the taskforce and asked for the release of the excavators at the blind side of the Chief of Staff.

Kweku Baako:

Prof Frimpong-Boateng, in his report, said that renowned journalist, Kweku Baako, called him to express displeasure about his operation at a mining concession owned by his (Kweku Baako’s) friends Donald Entsuah and Simon Ayman, a Canadian National, under their company – C&J Aleska.

He added that Baako’s New Crusading Guide Newspaper later reported false articles about him with ‘a lot of lies and misrepresentations’.

I Didn’t Plan ‘Shake It To The Max’ Dance – Moliy

0

Moliy

Singer Moliy has revealed that the viral dance challenge for her hit song ‘Shake It to the Max’  wasn’t planned or paid for — she created it herself while simply having fun.

Speaking with American media platform Revolt, Moliy explained that she wasn’t willing to pay influencers to create a challenge for the song, so she decided to freestyle her own moves.

“I was just goofing around. I’m not much of a dancer, and I wasn’t willing to pay anyone to create a challenge for me at the time. So, I really was just moving around, and I don’t know, it just kinda worked,” she said.

The challenge quickly caught on and has since gone viral, with fans and creatives around the world putting their own spin on it.

Moliy expressed excitement over how the song has grown, crediting people like Claudia K, who created a challenge for Shenseea’s verse, and dancers Davy and Mélo, who came up with choreography for the hook.

“Both of them have been instrumental in pushing the song further,” she noted.

‘Ghana’s democracy is under threat with NDC’s super-majority in Parliament’ — Political Analyst cautions

0

By Godwill Arthur-Mensah

Accra, July 16, GNA – Dr Rasheed Draman, the Executive Director of the African Centre for Parliamentary Affairs, has cautioned that the current super-majority status of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Parliament can pose a serious threat to Ghana’s democracy.

“Everywhere in the world, a majoritarian Parliament can be very tyrannical, if it goes unchecked, particularly when the majority side decides to follow directions at every stage.

Ghana’s democracy is not self-sustaining. In moments of political dominance, it becomes fragile,” Dr Draman noted.

Dr Draman made the remarks during a two-day capacity-building workshop for the Parliamentary Press Corps in Accra.

The political analyst cited the July 11 re-run of the 19 polling stations in the Ablekuma North constituency, which the NDC’s parliamentary candidate won, bringing the Party’s seats in Parliament to 184.

“The ruling NDC now has super-majority in Parliament with two-thirds members that can pass laws and take decisions without the Minority Caucus,” he added.

He indicated that though the situation was good for the ruling party but posed a serious risk to the country’s democracy.

The workshop, organised by the Media Relations Department of the Parliamentary Service, was held on the theme, “Enhancing the Image of Parliament through the Towering Role of the Media” which provided a platform for the Parliamentary Press Corps to reflect and re-assess their work towards improving national conversations.

Dr Draman stated that the current NDC’s super-majority in Parliament posed a risk to the country’s democracy because of “constitutional overreach”.

He noted “if the Majority Caucus want to amend the Constitution, they can do it…It’s only the anger of Ghanaians and education provided by journalists can aid to stop that process”.

Dr Draman stated that there was also the risk of the Majority passing bills into law without any debate, rubber stamping government policies and undermining independent voices like the civil society organisations and the media.

The political analyst, therefore, urged the media to be extra vigilant on the activities of the Majority Caucus and business of Parliament to avert potential tyranny under democracy.

Of the 276 seats in Parliament, the ruling NDC has 184 seats while the opposition NPP has 87 now following the sudden demise of the Akwatia MP Ernest Yaw Kumi with four independent legislators who are caucusing with the Majority NDC side.

Mahama’s fuel ban could deliver 81 maternity clinics, 121 schools and 303 CHPS compounds – Dr. Khalid

0

President Mahama

President John Mahama’s decision to scrap fuel allowances for political appointees could save Ghana over GH¢121 million in four years.

According to Economic Policy Advisor Dr. Sharif Mahmud Khalid, the savings could fund hundreds of health and education projects across the country.

Speaking on  on Tuesday, July 15, Dr. Sharif said a rough estimate using fuel consumption data from GOIL showed that if 1,000 government vehicles—comprising 500 saloon cars and 500 4x4s—were using 50 liters of fuel per week per vehicle, Ghana could save “probably about a total of 2.5 million plus a month and 30 million plus a year.”

He stressed these were conservative projections.

“The fleet could be more than 1,000, but I’m just using 1,000 as a benchmark figure here to see what we could accumulate,” he explained.

Using a four-year outlook, Dr. Sharif pegged the potential savings at “GH¢121 plus million in four years,” and offered a snapshot of what such an amount could mean in concrete terms for development.

“If you look at these figures of four years, we’re probably talking about, let’s say, a maternity block for a hospital or clinic costs probably about GH¢1.5 million… we could probably get an average of 81 of them out of the savings,” he said.

He went further, stating that based on current unit cost assumptions, the same savings could build 303 CHPS compounds or 121 six-unit classroom blocks. “That is, if you use 1,000 fleets, 500 being saloon, 500 being 4×4… So there’s some real justification to what it is,” he said.

Though he clarified that the figures were not exact government projections, Dr. Sharif said they were meant to give Ghanaians “the holistic picture of what expectation we could have, and the savings we could make if we actually adhere to this policy.”

He emphasised that these examples were not declarations of government plans, but rather illustrations of the scale of development potential Ghana could unlock by cutting wasteful expenditure.

“This is what I did in the studio, using GOIL’s figures… I’m sure subsequently, the President and the government communication machinery will be coming out to say, this is what we’ll use the money for,’” Dr. Sharif concluded.

Ablekuma North Troublemakers Will Face Justice – Muntaka

0

Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak

Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has condemned the violent incidents during the Ablekuma North Constituency re-run, vowing that all the perpetrators will be arrested and prosecuted irrespective of their political affiliation.

According to him, all the video evidence gathered from the scene have been handed over to the Inspector General of Police, and investigations are underway to identify the troublemakers.

“I have spoken to the IGP firmly on all the happenings of Ablekuma North, and the videos have been forwarded to him. We’ve instructed him to act swiftly and bring the perpetrators to book,” the Minister said during the Government Accountability Series at the Jubilee House yesterday.

A re-run of votes in 19 polling stations in Ablekuma North last Friday was marred with pockets of violence and disturbances in some polling stations, resulting in the EC temporarily suspending voting in some polling stations.

Former Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Mavis Hawa Koomson and the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Deputy National Organiser, Chris Lloyd Nii Kwei Asamoah, were physically assaulted by a group of people allegedly belonging to the National Democratic Congress (NDC). A journalist was also assaulted by a police officer.

Various individuals and groups have condemned the barbaric incident and have called for swift action to punish the perpetrators of the violence.

The NDC’s parliamentary candidate, Ewurabena Aubynn, was declared the winner after narrowly defeating the NPP’s Nana Akua Afriyie, who decided to contest the re-run despite the party boycotting it.

Condemnation

The Interior Minister has added his voice to the condemnation and promised to ensure all those involved face the law, indicating that “We are not going to condone wrongdoing, whether it involves people from within our party or from outside going around to do the untoward.”

Mohammed-Mubarak used the occasion to reiterate the Interior Ministry’s commitment to seize every opportunity presented to it towards executing its mandate, plans, programmes, and ensuring peace and security for the good people of Ghana.

The Minister also described the violent incident as a scar on the conscience of all Ghanaians, stating that “as a people who have practised democracy for over three decades, we can’t simply just go and have elections and it be violence-free.”

He further used the occasion to remind the public about the Vigilantism and Related Offences Act, 2019 (Act 999), which outlawed thuggery.

“For all the groups, whether you are in the NDC, whether you are in the NPP, whether you are independent, let me remind you of the Vigilante Act and what it says… I want to remind all of us, including myself, that if anybody organises this, this is what awaits you,” he said.

Mohammed-Mubarak also touched on the attack on a journalist and indicated that the said police officer who has since been interdicted, is known.

“We know where he is, we know where we can find him, and we can easily go after him,” he indicated.

He also used the occasion to urge all Ghanaians to play their roles in maintaining peace in the country, stating that “We must all contribute our quota in ensuring that we live peacefully with each other regardless of gender, religion, ethnic origin, or economic or social status.”

Odododiodioo MP hails impact of ‘life-saving’ Street Academy

0

The Street Academy held its 25th annual Health Walk through the principal streets of Accra last Saturday to create awareness about the needs of vulnerable children in society.

Special guests included the Member of Parliament (MP) for Odododiodioo, Alfred Nii Kotey Ashie, and former 2-time IBF bantamweight world champion, Joseph King Kong Agbeko, both beneficiaries of Street Academy.

The institution, located inside the Arts Centre near the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum in Accra, offers free tuition and mentoring for underprivileged children through basic education and has held the annual health walk for nearly three decades to also sensitise the public to the benefits of healthy living and the need to keep fit.

“I have been a part of Street Academy for over 20 years, as well as my brother Agbeko, who is here. He has gone on to become a world champion, I am here as an MP. There are several others who have become better people thanks to Street Academy, and we are very grateful,” Mr Ashie said.

“This school took us off the streets; it is a lifesaving initiative. If not for Street Academy, probably some of us would still have been on the streets, our lives messed up.

“It shapes character positively, so we want to encourage and inspire others, it doesn’t matter how your small your beginning is, your determination can take you up,” he stated.

The Founder and Administrator of Street Academy, Ataa Lartey, expressed gratitude to the MP, Agbeko, as well as 2022 Commonwealth Games silver medallist, Abraham Mensah (also a Street Academy alumnus), a famous actor, Don Ziggy, and many others who showed up to support the health walk.

He appealed for government, corporate and philanthropic support for the Academy to build an astro turf to enhance the nurturing of talents in more sporting disciplines, unlike just the six they practice currently, which include football, boxing and table tennis, through which they have produced national stars.

French giants Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) are planning to make a huge offer of about €250 million to sign Chelsea star player Cole Palmer.

According to a report which emerged on July 14, 2025, by Spanish media outlet Fichajes, the reigning UEFA Champions League holders are impressed with Palmer’s performances and would want to add him to their attackers.

Despite the reports, the French giants are yet to make an official bid and approach The Blues to make their intentions known and determine their stance.

However, Chelsea have made it clear in the past that none of their key players will be sold regardless of the offer as they intend to groom them for exploits in the future.

Palmer himself is said to be comfortable in London and is not considering any departure as the club continues to evolve with their strategy of signing young players.

The news comes after Chelsea thrashed PSG 3-0 to clinch the first FIFA Club World Cup in the United States of America to the surprise of many football fans.

The English international scored twice and made one assist which earned him the award as the Player of the Tournament.

ENFORCEMENT OF THE GHANA SHIPPERS’ AUTHORITY ACT, 2024 – MATTERS ARISING

0

The attention of the Ghana Shippers’ Authority (GSA) has been drawn to an article seeking to know about the extent of the effectiveness of the GSA Act, 2024 (Act 1122) since its passage by Parliament on 29th July 2024 and assent by the then President of the Republic of Ghana on 17th October 2024.

“We acknowledge the concerns raised in the said publication and wish to use this opportunity to address some factual inaccuracies, and also provide clarity on the GSA’s mandate and ongoing interventions to ensure a conducive shipping and logistics ecosystem for all players in the sector.”

The transformation of the GSA from a purely advocacy institution to a regulatory authority by the passage of Act 1122 (2024) marked a significant milestone in the development of Ghana’s trade sector. The shift reflected a broader national commitment to foster inclusive, transparent, and cost-effective governance of the sector. Under the new law, shipping service providers-including shipping lines, freight forwarders, terminal operators, and clearing agents are required to submit all proposed charges, fees, and tariffs to the GSA for review and approval prior to their implementation.

In line with this mandate, the GSA has enforced this obligation without let or hindrance. Early this year, for example, GSA engaged Shipping Lines as well as Ground Handlers who operate at the Kotoka International airport, and who in compliance with the law, submitted their charges for review and approval. Taking each case on its merit, some of them were refused the increment in the fees and charges they proposed because, their stated reasons for doing so were not well grounded commercially.

In a statement issued in Accra copied the Ghanaian Times by the GSA said it was being mindful that its role as a Regulator is not aimed at stifling businesses and international trade in particular, GSA has adopted an inquisitorial rather than adversarial approach to enforcing its Act. In this regard, thorough investigations into complaints, claims and assertions have informed the decisions and actions taken in response to shipper complaints. Active engagements of the stakeholders involved, to grant a hearing to each side have been employed to ensure that the outcomes of interventions aid progress rather than stagnation or retrogression.

Currently, GSA is engaging the Bank of Ghana (BoG) on a complaint it received from some shippers and Freight Forwarders regarding the arbitrary application of foreign exchange rates by some Shipping Lines. In pursuit of a fair outcome, GSA upon the findings of an investigation it conducted into the complaint, requested a meeting with the BoG as the Regulator of the Forex space, the Shipping Lines, as well as the complainants to elicit a directive from BoG to prohibit the illegal act.
A meeting held on Tuesday, 15th July 2025 between the BoG, GSA, shipping lines and other stakeholders is expected to culminate in the issuance of a conclusive resolution of the challenge by the BoG this week. The directive will be duly published for the attention and benefit of all stakeholders.
The statement issued by the Public Affairs Department of the GSA concluded

To further fortify the execution of its mandate, GSA has sought the input of all stakeholders in the shipping and logistics sector in drafting the Legislative Instrument that will drive the enforcement of Act 1122 (2024). They include the regulators of all the transport modes (air, sea and land) by which international trade is undertaken, service providers, terminal operators and Shipping Lines. This collaborative approach further underscores GSA’s resolve to ensure that enforcement of the law would remain without fear or favour, whilst upholding its mutually beneficial essence for the utmost good of Ghana and her people.

The Ghana Shippers’ Authority hereby reassures the general public that, it remains committed to serving the interests of all stakeholders in the shipping and logistics sector, and beyond that, GSA is particularly focused on positioning Ghana as the preferred hub in international trade. These objectives remain the guiding principles in our operations and will be upheld at all times.

NPP breaks silence on rumours of late Ernest Kumi’s wife contesting Akwatia seat

The Eastern Regional branch of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has dismissed reports circulating on social media suggesting that Mavis Kumi, widow of the late Akwatia MP Ernest Kumi, intends to contest the upcoming by-election in the constituency.

In a press statement signed by the Regional Chairman, Jeff Konadu Addo, on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, the Party described the claims and accompanying campaign flyers as false, misleading, and “deserving of the utmost contempt.”

“We wish to categorically state that this information is false, misleading, and should be treated with the utmost contempt it deserves,” citinewsroom.com quoted part of the statement as saying.

According to the regional leadership, the Party has been in close contact with Mavis Kumi and her family since the passing of Ernest Kumi, and she has made her position clear.

“She has unequivocally communicated that she has no interest in contesting the seat or participating in active politics at this time. Her current focus is to mourn her husband with dignity and in peace,” the statement noted.

The NPP urged party members, supporters, and the general public to disregard the unauthorised flyers and avoid spreading misinformation, particularly during a period of mourning.

“Misinformation of this nature only adds pain to an already grieving family… such conduct must be strongly discouraged,” the statement added.

Meanwhile, the NPP Constituency Chairman for Akwatia, Kofi Nyame, has also denied reports suggesting that Mavis Kumi is preparing to contest the party’s primary.

Speaking on Onua TV’s Nsem Titire on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, Nyame explained that although several individuals within the party have expressed interest in contesting the by-election, Mavis Kumi is not among them.

“It’s not true. Those flyers aren’t from her; someone else is behind them,” he clarified.

Mzbel Frowns At Court System

0

Mzbel

Musician Mzbel has expressed her frustration after a court hearing she was supposed to attend was cancelled.

According to Mzbel, she was on her way to court on Monday when she was informed that the judge was on leave.

In a post online, she questioned how a court session could be scheduled if the judge wasn’t available.

“On my way to court today, only to be told the judge is on leave. How could a court session be scheduled if the judge knew they’d be away? Is this a lapse in communication or a deeper issue within our judicial system,” she wrote on both Facebook and Instagram.

Although she didn’t say which case it was, her comment has started conversations online about delays and other issues within the judicial system.

Court Throws Out Agradaa’s Bail Pending Appeal

0

Evangelist Patricia Asiedua Asiamah

An attempt by convicted self-styled Evangelist, Patricia Asiedua Asiamah aka Nana Agradaa to seek a temporary relief from her 15-year jail term, was swiftly refused by a High Court in Amasaman which dismissed her application for bail pending appeal.

Lawyers for the fetish priestess turned preacher had filed the application before the court, urging it to grant her bail while she pursues an appeal against the decision of a Circuit Court which sentenced her to jail to 15 years in hard labour for defrauding by false pretences.

The bail application was heavily opposed by the Office of the Attorney General, and the court presided over by Justice Richard Osei after listening to arguments from her legal team and the prosecution, denied the application.

Agradaa, who was wearing a long black skirt, a white long sleeve and a white scarf, was hurriedly escorted into a waiting Ghana Prison Service pickup vehicle by her husband, Eric Oduro Asiamah and prison officers, right after exiting the courtroom.

A large crowd had gathered at the court premises to catch a glimpse of the ‘Sika Gari’ televangelist whose husband has indicated that she was on a mission to win more souls for God in prison, few days after her conviction and sentencing.

Nana Agradaa, a fetish priest turned pastor was sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment by a Circuit Court in Accra on July 3, 2025, for defrauding by false pretences. She was further fined GH¢300 for charlatanic advertisement and in default will face additional 30 days jail term.

This stems from charges brought against her in 2022 for defrauding some members of the public after she successfully deceived them that she was going to share GH¢300,000 during an all-night service at Heaven Way Champions International Ministry, a church she founded.

This is not the first time Nana Agradaa has been found guilty of charlatanic advertisement. In October 2022, a Circuit Court in Accra fined her an amount of GH¢36,000 for the offence.

Appeal

Her lawyer, Richard Asare Baffour has filed a notice of appeal against the 15-year jail term at the High Court, arguing that the judgement of the Circuit Court which resulted in her conviction and sentencing is unreasonable and cannot be supported by the evidence on record, and ought to be set aside.

Agradaa is also contesting that the entire trial mounted against her was wrong in law and that, the trial judge, Evelyn Asamoah denied her fair trial by calling her to prove her innocence when the prosecution had led no or insufficient evidence againt her.

She further avers that “the trial judge demonstrated manifest bias and personal animosity towards the petitioner by persistently engaging in confrontations, harassment, and intimidation of the accused’s lawyers in open court thereby denying her adequate and effective representation.”

The notice of appeal also adds that the sentence of 15 years in hard labour “is harsh and excessive, taking into consideration the circumstance of the case.”

Public Discourse

The sentence and jail term has generated debate, with some calling it excessive, while others say it is fair and serves as deterrent to others with similar intent.

The court’s decision has nonetheless set a precedent to those who may hide behind spiritual predictions and promises to dupe others.

Her Honour Evelyn Asamoah found that Agradaa’s actions were calculated, while highlighting the need to set deterrent to others.

Court documents indicate that Agradaa had advertised on her television channel that she had powers to double money, and this attracted hundreds of desperate Ghanaians from all walks life to her church looking for a quick cashout.

It turned out that it was just a ruse to deceive unsuspecting individuals who made their way to the so-called church service.

NDC’s Yakubu Abanga pledges to resign if found guilty of galamsey involvement

0

The Third National Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Yakubu Abanga, has declared his willingness to resign from his position if investigations find him complicit in illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.

His comment comes in the wake of a directive from the Attorney General, Dr Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, instructing the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) to investigate Mr Abanga and the NDC’s National Organiser, Joseph Yamin, over allegations of fuelling unauthorised anti-galamsey taskforces.

“I am putting my position on the line, that if anybody should be bold and come out with evidence against me, Abanga Yakubu Alhassan, that I am into galamsey or I have formed a taskforce to extort money from people and bring it to me in Accra, I will resign today from my position,” Mr Abanga said in an interview.

He described the allegations as “baseless, malicious and a calculated attempt to dent my hard-earned reputation.”

The controversy stems from accusations made by a group of small-scale miners who, in a recent press statement, accused the two NDC national executives of backing fake anti-galamsey taskforces. According to the miners, the so-called task forces have been invading legitimate mining sites across the Ashanti and Western Regions.

Leader of the aggrieved miners, Andrew Abban, alleged that these taskforce operatives wear camouflage and are armed with weapons, terrorising miners at sites in Sekondi, Bekwai, Offinso, Prestea, and other areas.

In a letter sighted by JoyNews, the Attorney General has directed EOCO to interrogate Mr Abanga and Mr Yamin, and to extend the probe to others found complicit in illegal mining activities.

“The scope of this investigation should include the matters highlighted in Prof. Frimpong-Boateng’s report on illegal mining,” the letter stated.

Although Mr Abanga says he has not officially received the letter, he has pledged full cooperation with any investigations, reiterating his readiness to step down if found guilty.

The development adds another layer to Ghana’s intensifying national debate on illegal mining, corruption, and political accountability.

Hassan Ayariga is leader of the All Peoples Congress (APC) Hassan Ayariga is leader of the All Peoples Congress (APC)

Leader of the All Peoples Congress (APC), Hassan Ayariga, has defended the use of the ‘Dr’ prefix to his name.

According to him, he has three doctorates. Two of which are honorary, while one was earned through rigorous academic work.

He says the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) should have written to him to verify whether his doctorate was earned through academic work or not.

However, nothing of the sort was done before they came publicly to tarnish his hard-won reputation.

He intends to sue GTEC for the damage it caused him by the public ridicule.

“I woke up this morning and all I could hear on social media is that GTEC says I cannot use my Doctorate Degree. I ask how? I didn’t get any letter from GTEC, so how did they come to that conclusion?” he questioned.

When asked if he has a doctorate, the APC leader retorted, “Of course. If I tell you, then I will not be able to sue them. I studied for it. I have three doctorates, two as honorary and one from my school. They did not even ask me to submit it, and I didn’t get a letter from them. Why do we behave in this way?

“Somebody like Hassan Ayariga, you want to ask him about his doctorate, the most important thing is to issue him a formal letter and ask him to write to you. Now I heard it from the news that GTEC has stripped Hassan Ayariga of his doctorate,” he said.

Hassan Ayariga intends to use due process to deal with GTEC for defamation.

“It is in political science. Not from a University in Ghana, but I won’t tell you. Once they have failed to follow due process, I will use the due process to correct them and sue them for defamation of character. Before you start telling someone not to use something publicly, you must have investigated and written to that person, wait for their response and hear from them,” he stated.

Background

The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has formally directed political figure Hassan Ayariga to immediately stop using the title “Dr.”, citing a lack of verifiable documentation to support its legitimacy.

In a letter dated July 14, 2025, sighted by GraphicOnline, GTEC accused Ayariga of failing to provide evidence clarifying the origin and nature of his doctoral title despite prior requests. The Commission demanded:

– The name of the awarding institution,

– Confirmation of whether the degree was earned or honorary,

– The date of conferment, and

– Details of the academic process followed.

“To date, the Commission has not received any response from you. This continued silence is unacceptable,” GTEC stated. It further warned that the unauthorised use of academic titles “is misleading and inconsistent with the academic protocols and standards governing the conferment and use of academic ranks in Ghana.”

AY Makun

Nigerian comedian and actor, AY Makun, has responded to claims that he is no longer active and relevant in the entertainment industry.

In an Instagram post, AY addressed people who believe that fame fades with age. He disagreed with the idea, stating that he continues to enjoy the spotlight and remains committed to his craft.

“They said the spotlight dims with age, I guess mine forgot the memo. Call it grace,” he wrote.

The award-winning entertainer added that he has no plans of slowing down or retiring anytime soon. Instead, he promised to keep entertaining audiences across different generations.

AY’s message reinforces the suggestion that age does not define success, especially when passion and hard work remain strong.
