Ghanaians will punish any government that refuses to deliver on its mandate
The Director of Election and IT NDC, Edward Omane Boamah
The Director of Election and IT of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, has urged the Mahama-led administration to prioritise accountability, humility, and truthfulness as it steps into governance.
Dr. Boamah emphasised the need for the NDC to learn from past mistakes and focus on delivering on its mandates to avoid the punishment of Ghanaians.
He further highlighted the importance of being transparent with citizens, especially in times of challenges.
“We went into this election, yes, I had predicted 57.3%, but many disagreed. What this should tell us is that Ghanaians will punish any government that refuses to deliver on its mandate. For me, this is what our party must take into account as some of our people step into government. We must keep this at the back of our minds and serve the good people of Ghana in humility. Where it is impossible to do it, we should be truthful to the people of Ghana and tell them this is not possible, or that it will take some time to fix it. We should be truthful,” he noted in a video shared on X by Metro TV on January 9, 2024.
The Director of Elections and IT expressed concern over the state of government institutions, describing them as decaying and pervasive.
He mentioned the Electoral Commission and the Judicial Service as examples of institutions that need reforms.
“There are a lot of our institutions that are decaying, and it’s pervasive. Look at the Electoral Commission, look at the judiciary, and many others. We need to right the wrongs. We need to fix our country so that not just our generation, but the generations yet unborn, shall be proud that there came a generation that saw the wrongs that had gone on over the past eight years and were determined to address them. Look, I went into this election with a maximum estimate of 169 parliamentary seats. As we speak, the NDC is above 180,” he added.
Dr. Boamah also lauded President John Dramani Mahama’s leadership, highlighting his commitment to truthfulness and accountability.
”And that is why I’m happy. President Mahama spoke extensively about being truthful. President Mahama is committed to ensuring accountability,” he added.

Israel Commits To Invest in Ghana’s Solar Energy System
The Ambassador of the State of Israel to Ghana, Roey Gilad, has announced his government’s commitment to invest in Ghana’s solar energy system to enhance the country’s electricity supply.
According to Ambassador Gilad, this investment in solar energy can contribute to a more consistent and reliable electricity supply while promoting sustainability, energy independence, and economic growth.
The initiative aims to reduce Ghana’s reliance on fossil fuels, thereby enhancing energy security and mitigating the impact of price volatility.
“Israel has demonstrated significant economic progress, particularly in developing industries and advancing technology. Given the abundant sunlight in Ghana, Israel possesses cutting-edge technology in solar energy that could support the country’s development in this field,” stated Amb. Gilad.
Israel’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sharren Haskel, emphasised that following a meeting with President John Dramani Mahama and Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, the current government is deeply focused on agriculture and food security, exploring how Ghana can leverage Israel’s expertise in agricultural technology.
“Israel has pioneered advanced agricultural technologies that can greatly benefit our collaboration in this area. Moreover, our partnership extends beyond technology to cultural issues, such as early childhood education and the empowerment of women. We have implemented various programmes, and there are numerous fields where we can collaborate. I look forward to discussing these opportunities further,” she added.
*Israel Safe*
In the wake of the recent terrorist attack by Hamas in southern Israel, the Deputy Minister, Sharren Haskel, addressed concerns regarding travel safety to the country, highlighting that many nations have recently lowered their travel warnings for Israel.
“We are actively working on expanding all travel routes in and out of the country,” she stated.
The Deputy Minister assured potential visitors that Israel is safe for travel and that the nation is well-prepared to handle extreme situations.
She emphasised the defensive measures in place, noting that nearly every home in Israel is equipped with a shelter. “When an alarm sounds, residents can quickly take refuge in these shelters, ensuring their safety,” she explained.
Sharren Haskel further elaborated on the preparedness of Israeli citizens, stating that they are well-informed and ready for emergencies.
She added that advanced technology has been developed to counter missile and drone attacks, enabling Israel to intercept most threats. “This makes Israel one of the safest places to travel, even amid regional conflicts,” she asserted.
Reflecting on the aftermath of the events of October 7, she praised the resilience of the Israeli people in rebuilding both human resources and infrastructure.
“Throughout our history, we have faced difficult times, yet many companies are investing in Israel and looking to expand,” she remarked.
The Deputy Minister emphasised that even during conflicts, the dedication and productivity of the Israeli workforce remain strong. While acknowledging that rebuilding will require time and substantial investment.
“Numerous international companies recognize our capacity for growth and innovation,” she stated.
Looking ahead, Sharren Haskel outlined plans for the upcoming year, focusing on economic recovery and business investments.
She expressed a desire to foster collaboration with international partners, stating, “Together, we can achieve great things.”

Kejetia traders worried over recent market fires
Traders at the Kejetia Market in Kumasi are growing increasingly uneasy following recent fire outbreaks in major markets across the country earlier this month. They are calling on the government and relevant authorities to take urgent steps to ensure the safety and security of their market.
The traders expressed concerns about the lack of support and reconstruction efforts following a fire that gutted part of the Kejetia Market two years ago. According to them, the affected shops remain unrepaired, leaving many traders stranded and unable to work.
President of the Federation of Traders at Kejetia Market, Nana Kwesi Prempeh said the recent fire incidents in places like Katamanto, Kwadaso Wood Market, and Tamale Timber Market have heightened their fears.
“These recent fire outbreaks make us very apprehensive because two years ago, we experienced a similar situation here at Kejetia. Unfortunately, repair works have not been done, and traders affected by the fire have been left on their own. We have also heard rumours of attempts to cause arson in markets during election periods, which has kept us on high alert,” he said.
The Ashanti Regional Office of the Ghana National Fire Service has also cautioned traders to adhere to fire safety protocols. A representative of the service advised market managers and traders to strictly enforce rules, such as prohibiting cooking in the markets.
“Some traders secretly use gas cylinders in the market despite the ban. They should remember that their investments are at risk, and if a fire destroys the market, it is their livelihood that suffers,” the officer said.
Nana Kwesi Prempeh has called for an emergency meeting involving market managers, traders, and government officials to address fire safety concerns. He proposed strict enforcement of market bylaws, including regulating opening and closing times, to reduce the risk of fires.
Traders are urging authorities to prioritise the safety of the Kejetia Market, noting that delays in addressing these issues could lead to more losses and disruptions to their businesses.

Old students of Wesley Girls Senior High School have taken to social media to celebrate a historic moment for Ghana and their alma mater.
This was on the back of the coming into office of Professor Naana Opoku-Agyemang as the first female vice president of the Republic of Ghana.

Professor Naana Jane Opuku-Agyemang was sworn in on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, at the Black Star Square, where she took her vice presidential oath of office.
Reacting to this historic achievement, two alumni of the Wesley Girls took to TikTok to mock their rivals, bragging that their school has produced Ghana’s first female vice president in the person of Professor Naana Jane.
In the TikTok video sighted by YEN.com.gh, the two ladies, clad in their school’s uniform, danced to the Kwen Kwen campaign song of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
“Mood because even if you say Geyhey lost NSMQ, we can say bring your vice president and CJ,” the caption on the video read.
Professor Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang is an old student of the Wesley Girls Senior High School, completing her secondary education in 1971.
After her time at the Central Region-based secondary school, Professor Naana Jane enrolled at the University of Cape Coast, where she was awarded a B.Ed.(Hons) in English and French in 1977.
Before breaking the glass ceiling as Ghana’s first female vice president, Professor Naana Jane previously served as the minister of education between 2013 and 2016.
She had also earlier set the record as the first female vice-chancellor of a public university in Ghana, serving the University of Cape Coast until her subsequent appointment as the education minister.

Mozambique tense as opposition leader returns from exile
Mozambique’s opposition leader Venâncio Mondlane
Mozambique’s opposition leader Venâncio Mondlane has returned home from exile where he has been in hiding following October’s disputed presidential election that sparked deadly protests.
Mondlane landed at the main airport in the capital, Maputo, on Thursday morning amid tension and heavy security, with thousands of people having gathered to welcome him.
He said he was returning to be closer to the protest movement that has seen weeks of nationwide demonstrations in which dozens of people have been killed.
His return comes ahead of next week’s swearing-in as president of Daniel Chapo, of the ruling Frelimo party, who was confirmed as the winner of October’s poll by the constitutional court.
After having emerged from the airport building, video shows Mondlane kneeling on the ground with a Bible in his hand being cheered by supporters.
He began to pray and swore to serve the people of Mozambique as the president elected by the people and not by a court.
In his first comments Mondlane said that he was ready to talk about how to resolve the tension over the disputed poll, which he says was stolen from him.
“I’m here in the flesh to say that if you want to negotiate… I’m here,” he said.
Mondlane has been organising protests through broadcasts on Facebook, but over the weekend announced his impending return, saying they “don’t need to chase me anymore”.
In a defiant message he said: “If [the authorities] want they can kill me, but the fight will continue”.
Ahead of his landing, the airport was heavily guarded with police officers trying to prevent Mondlane’s supporters from reaching the area.
Roads leading to the airport were blocked with security forces restricting people from getting to the airport unless they had a ticket for a flight.
Tear gas was fired on crowds in the area and snipers were positioned on buildings nearby, the Reuters news agency reports.
Mondlane said his return was “a unilateral decision” that did not result from any political agreement.
He maintains he won the election and has previously said he would install himself as president on 15 January.
The final official results from the constitutional court two weeks ago gave Chapo 65% of the vote and Mondlane 24%.
Since the October election, waves of protests have left more than 270 people including protesters, children and members of the security forces dead, according to rights groups.
Asokwa Municipal Assembly expresses concern about attacks on assembly members
By Muyid Deen Suleman
Kumasi Jan 09 – GNA – The Asokwa Municipal Assembly has condemned the unprovoked attacks by alleged NDC foot soldiers on some assembly members in the municipality.
Nana Yaw Wiredu, the Presiding Member (PM) of the Assembly, said the violent attacks being orchestrated by certain elements in the National Democratic Congress (NDC), if not stopped immediately could degenerate into conflict in the municipality.
In a statement issued in Kumasi, Nana Wiredu pointed out that, the physical attack on Mr Raymond Opoku Agyemang, the Assembly Member for Atonsu-Agogo South electoral area, by some NDC foot soldiers over an Astroturf on Tuesday January 08, 2025, was uncalled for and needed to be investigated.
Mr Opoku Agyeman was said to have received severe beatings from the thugs when he tried to mediate in a confrontation between the NDC foot soldiers and management of a local football club in the area on the use of the newly constructed Astroturf in the electoral area.
The NDC thugs, allegedly led by one Issaka, invaded the park while the team was training and demanded their immediate vacation from the park.
Despite attempts by the team Manager to resolve the issue amicably, the foot soldiers remained adamant, and this resulted in altercations between the thugs and the management of the team.
Mr Opoku Agyeman, who was notified about the situation and was invited to intervene, was subjected to severe beatings.
Attempts to explain that the football team had received official approval from the Municipal assembly to use the park did not go down well as the thugs numbering about 20 subjected him and other team managers to severe beatings.
Nana Wiredu in the statement described the assault as appalling and intolerable and called on law enforcement authorities to promptly investigate the matter and ensure that the culprits faced the full rigours of the law.
He expressed dismay at the behavior of the NDC foot soldiers, urging the Asokwa Police to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident and mete out appropriate sanctions on the perpetrators.
Nana Wiredu called on the NDC leadership in the Ashanti region and the Asokwa constituency to immediately rein in their members, to desist from such acts since such intimidation and violence would not be tolerated by the Municipal Assembly.
He further mentioned that the Assembly had complied with directives regarding the removal of government appointees, emphasizing that this should have facilitated a seamless transition instead of hostility.
Nana Wiredu assured the Assembly Members of their safety, vowing that the Assembly, in collaboration with law enforcement agencies, would take measures to prevent such occurrences in the future.
He encouraged the assembly members to remain composed as the process of appointing a new Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) and other government appointees progressed in an orderly manner.
He said all procedures leading to the appointment of a new MCE and other government appointees would be executed smoothly and peacefully.

Ghanaians Urged To Prioritize Regular Exercise
Kwasi Badu (1st right), presenting a cheque to one of the beneficiaries
PRESIDENT OF the 4 Garrison Officers’ Mess Keep-fit Club (Ridge) in Kumasi, Kwasi Badu, has encouraged more Ghanaians to join Keep-fit clubs to engage in fitness to promote a healthy lifestyle.
He explained that sedentary live styles lead to so many ailments, hence the call for a regular exercise to release unwanted materials from the body to enhance their health.
Mr. Badu said these during an annual dinner organised by the club to support the needy.
At the event, a cheque of GH¢160,000 was given to eight orphanages in the region for their upkeep. The money was solicited through individual contributions from the members of the club.
The beneficiaries include Obeng Kwakye Foundation, Ashan Children’s Home, Kumasi Cheshire Home and Cherubs Home.
Others are Frhab Ghana Charity Foundation, Perfect Peace Foundation, Blessed School and Missionary of Mercy.
Presenting a cheque of GH¢20,000 to each of the beneficiaries, Mr. Badu stated that the gesture was part of the club’s areas of focus and contributions to help put smiles on the faces of the children and other less privileged in society.
“As a Keep-fit club, the passion to help the needy in the society is something that we all cheerish most. When you pay a visit to any of the orphanages here, the conditions there are so horrible that sometimes if you are not careful you may end up crying so we took it upon ourselves to lend a helping hand to them,” he said.
He pledged the club’s readiness to continue to improve the lives of the less privileged in society, and appealed to the heads of the beneficiary foundations to use the money judiciously and for its intended purposes for the well-being of the children.
Mr. Badu called on other groups to support the orphanages to render quality care and support.
He seized the opportunity to invite male interested individuals to join them. “We are about 121 members, and I will appeal to anyone who is interested in exercise to join us,” he added.
Some of the children who accompanied their heads to the event prayed for God’s blessings for the members of the club.
The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Frhab Ghana Charity Foundation, who spoke on behalf of the other beneficiaries thanked the Keep-fit Club members and urged other corporate bodies and groups to emulate the kind gesture to assist their facilities.

Angel Sports is reporting that the John Dramani Mahama administration has put in a formal request to the Ghana Football Association to provide a detailed report on the state of Ghana Football.

A renewed promise: Resetting Ghana’s future

By Ernest De-Graft EGYIR
On January 7 ,2025, the world witnessed the dawn of a new chapter in Ghana’s political history with the inauguration of His Excellency John Dramani Mahama as President of the Republic of Ghana. This event was not just a ceremonial transition of power; it marked the reaffirmation of our collective commitment to democratic ideals and Ghana’s potential for transformation.
President Mahama’s address was a masterclass in statesmanship—grounded in history, imbued with optimism, and focused on actionable outcomes. His speech artfully wove together reflections on Ghana’s journey, a sober assessment of its current challenges, and a visionary roadmap for a brighter future.

Leadership rooted in reflection
The President opened with a poignant nod to Ghana’s democratic legacy, particularly the Fourth Republic’s resilience since its establishment in 1993. By referencing milestones such as the first democratic handover of power in 2001 and his own journey alongside former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, President Mahama invoked a sense of continuity and shared purpose.
This reflection was not mere nostalgia; it was a reminder of Ghana’s potential to overcome obstacles through unity, respect for democratic principles, and the will of the people.
A Call for a National Reset
The central theme of the President’s speech was “resetting Ghana”—a call to recalibrate the nation’s governance, economy, and social fabric. This theme resonated powerfully with a populace that has endured economic turbulence and governance challenges in recent years. President Mahama acknowledged the frustrations of ordinary Ghanaians and the mandate for change they delivered through the ballot box.
His emphasis on “resetting” struck a chord because it wasn’t about starting anew but about recalibrating the systems, mindsets, and institutions that have guided Ghana thus far. It was a clarion call to refocus on collective goals, individual responsibilities, and shared prosperity.
Strategic Priorities for the Future
President Mahama outlined four critical areas of focus for his administration:
- Economic Restoration and Stability: Recognizing the dire economic circumstances, the President promised swift and decisive action to stabilize the macroeconomic environment and rebuild investor confidence. His proposed 24-hour economy is a bold and innovative step toward unlocking Ghana’s dormant potential and fostering productivity.
- Governance and Constitutional Reforms: The emphasis on governance reform signals an intent to rebuild trust in public institutions and enhance accountability. This will be critical for addressing the disillusionment many Ghanaians feel toward the democratic process.
- The Fight Against Corruption: By placing accountability front and center, President Mahama demonstrated his understanding that good governance is the bedrock of sustainable development.
- Youth Empowerment and Inclusivity: The President’s message to the youth was especially inspiring. His focus on education, entrepreneurship, and job creation reflects a commitment to harnessing Ghana’s most valuable resource—its young population.
A Historic Moment for Gender Equality
The inauguration of Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang as Ghana’s first female Vice President was a significant milestone that President Mahama rightly celebrated. It underscored his administration’s commitment to inclusivity and the empowerment of women. This historic achievement sends a powerful message about Ghana’s progress toward gender equity and the value of diverse leadership in nation-building.
Facing Global and Regional Realities
President Mahama demonstrated a keen awareness of the broader geopolitical and environmental contexts in which Ghana operates. From shifts in global economic power to the growing risks of pandemics and climate change, the President framed Ghana’s challenges within a global lens, emphasizing the need for regional cooperation and proactive policymaking.
A Vision Rooted in Action
What set this speech apart was its blend of vision and pragmatism. The President’s 26 actions for the first 120 days signaled an administration ready to hit the ground running. His emphasis on “actions louder than words” reflected a deep understanding of the urgency of the moment.
A Shared Covenant with the People
The President concluded with a heartfelt appeal to every Ghanaian to join him in this journey of renewal. By calling for a collective covenant, he reminded us that leadership is a partnership between the government and the governed. His invocation of faith in Ghana—its people, institutions, and future—was both inspiring and unifying.
A Message of Hope and Resolve
In sum, President Mahama’s inaugural speech was a resounding call to action for all Ghanaians. It balanced the gravity of our challenges with the hope of what we can achieve together. His focus on accountability, inclusivity, and innovation sets the tone for an administration that is deeply attuned to the aspirations of the people.
As we move forward, it is incumbent upon all stakeholders—government, private sector, civil society, and individuals—to play their part in realizing the vision of a reset Ghana. Together, we can co-create a nation that not only lives up to its promise but exceeds all expectations.
Let us rally behind this leadership and embrace the opportunities that lie ahead. Ghana’s best days are yet to come.

‘Back to gari soakings’ – Sarkodie’s latest post sparks reactions online
Sarkodie’s recent Instagram post has sparked a heated debate on social media.
On January 8, 2025, the rapper shared a story on Instagram that simply read, “Back to gari soakings like we never left.”
Although the post lacked context, many interpreted the comment as a reaction to President John Dramani Mahama’s return to office on January 7, following his victory in the 2024 general elections.
Sarkodie has previously been vocal about his dissatisfaction with Mahama’s administration from 2013 to 2016, often expressing his grievances through his music.
However, the rapper’s relative ‘silence’ during the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia administration (2017-2024) led some to speculate that he had aligned himself with the NPP.
Currently, his latest post has triggered a mix of reactions, with some critics accusing him of hypocrisy, while others have threatened to withdraw their support for his craft.
Despite the backlash, many of his fans have defended the rapper, arguing that the post was not a political commentary but rather a light-hearted reflection on life’s simplicities.

Watch scenes from the Black Star Square a day after President Mahama’s inauguration
Watch the moment Kwesi Pratt clashed with Kweku Baako over military takeovers in Africa
Kwesi Pratt Jnr. (L) and Abdul Malik Kweku Baako Jnr. (R)
An intellectual clash unfolded on the January 8, 2025, episode of Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana program when Kwesi Pratt Jnr., Managing Editor of The Insight newspaper, and Abdul Malik Kweku Baako Jnr., Editor-in-Chief of the New Crusading Guide, shared opposing views on military takeovers across the African continent and Ghana.
The debate between the two distinguished media personalities stemmed from Kwesi Pratt’s admiration of the loud cheers that erupted from the crowd at Black Star Square during President John Dramani Mahama’s investiture on January 7.
This occurred when the military leader of Burkina Faso, Ibrahim Traore, was introduced moments before stepping onto the podium to exchange pleasantries with Mahama.
Reacting to the moment, which has since sparked widespread conversation among Ghanaians, Kwesi Pratt described it as a public endorsement of military leadership over democratically elected leaders. He pointed out that the military leader received the loudest applause from the crowd compared to the other democratically elected leaders who attended the event.
Kwesi Pratt explained that the loud cheers in response to Traore’s presence spoke volumes, emphasising that it represented a public endorsement of military coup d’etats and the opposition to various issues plaguing many African countries.
He specifically highlighted concerns such as neo-colonialism, the struggle for Africans to gain control over their own resources for their benefit, among other challenges.
He was however, sharply interjected by Kweku Baako whose opinion opposed military takeovers.
Expressing his strong disapproval of military takeovers, Kweku Baako argued that such actions have not brought any positive benefits to the continent, citing how past military leaders who assumed power often turned into dictators.
He emphasised that this is precisely why past leaders fought to restore constitutional order, ensuring that leaders are democratically elected.
Read excerpts of their conversation below:
Kwesi Pratt: Something very significant happened at the Black Star Square. The Head of State who had the largest applause, and the most emphatic display of public enthusiasm was Ibrahim Traore. That should say something. The public endorsement as far as I’m concerned…..
Kweku Baako: We have seen it all before. I am very cynical and skeptical about these characters. You’ve seen it all, so please ……..
Kwesi Pratt: No problem but for the moment yesterday, all the so called democratically elected leaders did not get the kind of endorsement Ibrahim Traore got at the Independence Square and that is a statement.
Kweku Baako: I’m struggling to get the logic of your point. What is it? what was the Ghanaian community who were the majority at the place endorsing?
Kwesi Pratt: They were endorsing the struggle against neo-colonialism, they were endorsing a struggle for African people to take hold of their resources and to exploit it for their own benefits, endorsing a regime that is saying no to foreign military base on African soil. Democracy must yield something that people wants…

WAPCo’s offshore pigging exercise could trigger energy supply risks
File photo of a power sub station
The Executive Director of the Institute for Energy Security (IES), Nana Amoasi VII, has raised concerns over the timing of the planned maintenance activities on the offshore West African Gas Pipeline (WAGP), warning that the exercise could expose Ghana to significant energy supply risks.
The mandatory maintenance operation, set to run from January 20 to February 16, 2025, involves cleaning, inspecting and replacing sub-sea valves along the pipeline. Initially slated for October 2024, the schedule was deferred at the request of the Ministry of Energy, according to a statement issued by Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo).
Nana Amoasi VII, in an interview with B&FT, while citing that the rescheduling raises critical questions, noted the need for adequate preparations for the supply of liquid fuel to power plants in the eastern corridor of the country.
This is given that the current arrangements will starve these plants of natural gas supply. But with the current liquid fuel shortage, he maintained that the country could be put through another period of ‘dumsor.’
The WAGP serves as a critical infrastructure for delivering natural gas from Nigeria to Ghana, Togo and Benin, fuelling power plants and supporting industrial activities. A disruption in its operations, even temporarily, could strain energy production capacity and potentially lead to power outages or increased reliance on costly alternative energy sources.
The IES Director stressed the importance of creating room for additional liquefied fuel supplies before proceeding with the maintenance work. “If not, considering the current challenges onshore, going ahead with the clean-up offshore will impact fuel supply.”
He also urged GRIDCo to engage the government to extend the execution of the exercise, ensuring preparedness and dispelling any notions that the timing is politically motivated.
Nana Amoasi VII further suggested that proper engagement with the government would enable GRIDCo to conduct a more comprehensive risk assessment of any further rescheduling.
He expressed scepticism about the planned duration of the maintenance, citing previous exercises by the company with exceeded timelines.
“If you defer a planned maintenance unnecessarily, then you are accepting that there can be a false shutdown of the system,” he said. Such delays, he warned, could lead to larger challenges, underscoring the importance of thorough and timely preparation.
GRIDCo’s report on the impending exercise stated that a total of 180 million standard cubic feet per day (mmscfd) of gas is consumed by the Sunon Asogli Plant, Cenpower, KTPP, TT1PP, AKSA, and Bridge Power plants in Tema.
During the pigging period, the WAGP lateral in Tema will be closed, leading to no gas supply for these thermal plants – except those capable of running on liquid fuel. This will require the shutdown of several gas-fired plants in Tema, reducing generation capacity.
Meanwhile, thermal plants in the Western Region—TAPCo, TICo, Karpower, and Twin City—consume about 230 mmscfd of natural gas. Additionally, Anwomaso Thermal Power Station in Kumasi and Genser Energy Power Stations together consume 75 mmscfd of gas. Non-power sectors in the West account for another 35 mmscfd.
With domestic gas production from ENI and Tullow providing a total of 345 mmscfd, the region’s supply will be sufficient to meet demand; even accommodating the 80–90 mmscfd delivered from Nigeria via the WAGP.
To facilitate the pigging exercise, gas production from ENI and Tullow will need to be adjusted to balance supply and consumption. GRIDCo also plans to dispatch hydro plants at high capacity during the maintenance period to offset the thermal generation shortfall in Tema. Akosombo GS is projected to run all six units continuously, while Bui GS will operate its units in staggered shifts to maximise output.
However, the report noted that a deficit in generation capacity is still anticipated, emphasising the urgent need to procure liquid fuel to sustain thermal plants in Tema. An estimated US$89.9million is required to purchase the necessary liquid fuel to meet demand during this period.

A member of the Black Satellites team that won the 2009 Under-20 World Cup in Egypt, Philip Boampong, has slammed Andre Dede Ayew for allegedly signing an insurance deal without the players’ knowledge.
In his narration, Boampong noted that after they won the tournament, team captain Dede Ayew and some officials signed a deal without seeking the opinion of the entire team.
The defender stated that the deal involved an insurance policy that the players were supposed to benefit from for 15 years.
However, because they had not been informed, none of the players benefited, despite having funds deducted from the financial reward package which was given to them.
During an interview with Global Sports Studios, Boampong expressed his displeasure over how Dede Ayew handled the deal without the players’ knowledge.
“There was an investment, and he [Dede Ayew] was part of it, but we did not know anything about it. We were called for a general meeting and informed about an insurance policy. It was supposed to cover us for fifteen years in case of injuries, but we didn’t know.
“If we had known, we would have sought treatment when we got injured. So, with over 22 players, we were deducted some amount of money, yet we didn’t benefit. At least, he should have told us,” Boampong said in Twi during the interview.

Ablekuma-North: Presiding Officer lays down his tools, re-collation suspended
By Edward Acquah
Accra, Jan. 09, GNA – Mr Vincent Obeng, the Presiding Officer for the Ablekuma-North Constituency, says he cannot continue with the re-collation of the disputed parliamentary results due to “frustration” and chaos that has characterised the exercise.
The EC on Wednesday suspended the re-collation exercise for Ablekuma-North for the fifth consecutive time after hours of altercation over the validity of the statement of results sheets for the collation.
The results for three polling stations are outstanding.
The EC cannot declare the results unless the remaining three are verified and added to the tabulated results.
The Commission said it would communicate its next line of action in due course.
The EC has been relying on the scanned copies of the statement of results sheets from the political parties to collate the results for some 62 polling stations whose pink sheets got missing following the close of polls.
For some 20 polling stations results that could not be verified independently by the Returning Officer, he summoned the Presiding Officers in the effected polling stations to assist with the authentication.
Ahead of Wednesday’s re-collation, there were seven outstanding polling station results yet to be verified.
After hours of heated exchanges between agents of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC), the Commission was able to authenticate the results for four out of the seven outstanding polling stations.
Mr Obeng, who was visibly exhausted by the turn of events, expressed frustration about the protracted impasse and urged the Commission to find a new Returning Officer to complete the work.
“It is so unfortunate for me to make this statement that I am done with Ablekuma North. They should find a new Returning Officer to continue their work for them,” he said.
Dr Serebour Quaicoe, Director of Training, EC, said the Commission would engage the Returning Officer to rescind his decision.
“The EC has no interest in who becomes the Member of Parliament for Ablekuma North,” he said.
Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie, the NPP Parliamentary Candidate for Ablekuma-North, said her independent collation suggested that she was leading by more than 300 votes.
“I will fight till the end because I know I won,” she told journalists.
However, Mr Musah Kalamu, Ablekuma-North Constituency Organiser, NDC, said the Party would not accept the results for the 62 polling stations in contention.
“We want a rerun of the elections in the 62 polling stations. We cannot accept the scanned copies of the results presented by the NPP,” he said.

NPP Must Rise Again –
Eight years ago, the people of Ghana decisively rejected John Dramani Mahama, handing him what was described as the worst defeat ever suffered by an incumbent government. Yet, eight years later, he has staged a remarkable comeback, securing the largest victory in nominal terms under the 4th Republic.
Today, the NPP faces its moment of reckoning after a painful and humiliating defeat. But this is not the end of the party; it is only a test of its resilience. Moving forward, the party must commit to honest, open, and constructive dialogue within its structures to assess what went wrong, acknowledge missteps, and draw valuable lessons. This internal process will lay the foundation for genuine reconciliation, renewal, and progress, anchored in unity.
The NPP’s history is rich with the sweat, sacrifice, and toil of its founding fathers, who faced countless setbacks but never surrendered. From the ashes of defeat, they built a party rooted in principles, courage, and perseverance—a legacy that must inspire us today. It is this same spirit of determination and unity that the NPP must harness to rise again.
The next year must be a period of rebuilding and restoration. The focus should be on strengthening internal bonds, engaging all voices, and charting a new course with clarity and purpose. This is a time for sobriety, reflection, and decisive action, driven by a shared responsibility to uphold the party’s values and future.
No candidate can lead the party back to power unless the foundation of the party itself is strengthened and united. The lessons from this defeat must inspire humility, strategic thinking, and a renewed commitment to the ideals that built this party. We must rise not just for ourselves, but to honour the legacy of those who came before us and to secure the future for generations to come.
The clock is ticking, and the time for renewal and revival begins now. NPP will rise again!
Happy Constitution Day to all Ghanaians as we reflect on our democratic journey and recommit to the values of development, freedom, and justice.

IGP Dampare’s Attempt to Win Favor ‘A Desperate Act to Save His Job
“IGP Dampare’s Attempt to Win Favor ‘A Desperate Act to Save His Job” – ACP Agordzo
News Hub Creator2h
Retired senior police officer ACP Benjamin Agordzo has criticized Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr. George Akuffo Dampare for directing traffic during former President John Dramani Mahama’s inauguration on January 7, 2025 as reported by Ghana Web on Thursday, January 9, 2025.
The event, held at the Black Star Square, saw Dr. Dampare step out of his car to manage traffic despite deploying officers for the task.
While the act has been lauded by some as a display of leadership, others have dismissed it as a publicity stunt. The Forum for Development and Accountable Governance (FDAG) labeled the move “a shameful display” and accused the IGP of using the occasion to push a personal agenda.
“This is not about leadership but an orchestrated campaign to retain his position,” FDAG said in a statement.
ACP Agordzo echoed these sentiments, accusing Dr. Dampare of engaging in “public theatrics” to win favor with the incoming National Democratic Congress administration. In a Facebook post on January 8, he described the gesture as an act of desperation.
“Those who have eyes can see what Dampare is about. This kind of ‘eye service’ aimed at catching the attention of the NDC leadership is shameful,” he wrote.
Critics argue that such acts detract from addressing critical challenges such as rising crime rates.
Calls for new leadership within the Ghana Police Service have intensified, with detractors urging a change toward more effective strategies to restore public trust and order.
Man who walked from Kumasi to Mahama’s inauguration receives car gift
Alhaji Ayaana Yakubu, the 65-year-old man who walked from Kumasi to Accra to honour President John Dramani Mahama’s inauguration on January 7, has been gifted a brand-new Renault car, an undisclosed sum of money, and shopping vouchers worth GH¢5,000.
The gesture was made possible by a philanthropist who, choosing to remain anonymous, reached out to ensure Alhaji Ayaana’s remarkable effort was recognised and rewarded.
The presentation was made by Kofi Okyere Darko, widely known as KOD, a renowned broadcaster and showbiz personality.
Sharing the moment on his Instagram handle, KOD posted a video of the handover ceremony. The footage shows Alhaji Ayaana, visibly moved, receiving the car keys before stepping inside his new vehicle.
Alhaji Ayaana is no stranger to symbolic acts of patriotism. His recent walk is the latest in a series of inspiring journeys aimed at honouring Ghana’s democracy and promoting national unity.
In 1997, Alhaji Ayaana gained nationwide recognition for walking long distances to celebrate the second-term inauguration of former and late President Jerry John Rawlings.
Two years later, in 1999, he organised a 16-kilometer peace and health walk in Tamale to advocate for unity and well-being, demonstrating his belief in the power of grassroots initiatives to inspire change.
KOD, who facilitated the reward ceremony, described the event as an honour to be part of.
In his Instagram post, he wrote: “This afternoon, I had the honor of presenting Mr. Yakubu—a gentleman who walked all the way from Kumasi to congratulate H.E. President Mahama on his victory in the last elections—with a brand-new Renault car, an undisclosed amount of money, and shopping vouchers worth GH¢5,000 from Nineteen57.”
KOD further acknowledged the generosity of the anonymous philanthropist, who made the entire initiative possible.

Court to begin trial of two escapee prisoners on Jan 27
An Accra Circuit Court has scheduled the trial of two remand prisoners accused of escaping from the Manet Police Station Cells for January 27.
The trial date was set after the prosecution completed all necessary disclosures.
They are expected to present around three witnesses during the proceedings.
The accused, Pius Anundoabil Ayoma, 23, an electrician, and Godwin Klu, 26, a tiler, face charges of conspiracy to commit a crime, specifically escaping lawful custody and causing unlawful damage.
Both defendants have pleaded not guilty before the court, presided over by Mr. Samuel Bright Acquah.
The prosecution, led by Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Maxwell Oppong, informed the court that the complainants in the case were police officers from the Manet Police Station in Accra.
It was stated that Ayoma, the first accused, and Klu, the second accused, are both remand prisoners at the Manet Police Station cells.
The prosecution outlined that Ayoma faces charges of robbery, attempted murder, and rape, while Klu is charged with theft.
Both accused persons were standing trial at the High Court (Criminal Court 5).
DSP Oppong further revealed that Klu had been convicted to serve a four-year sentence.
The prosecution explained that while arrangements were being made to transfer the accused to prison custody, they devised an escape plan.
The accused managed to break the burglar bars at the window of their cell, damaged the wire mesh, and tore the mosquito net, creating an opening through which they intended to escape.
On March 2, 2023, around 0200 hours, Klu attempted to flee through the hole but was unable to due to his large size.
Ayoma also tried to escape but got his trousers caught on the rough edges of the iron bars. Klu helped Ayoma by freeing his trousers from the rod and giving them back to him so he could escape.
However, Klu himself failed to escape and was subsequently transferred to Ankaful Prisons to begin serving his sentence.
A search operation was launched to locate Ayoma.
Intelligence gathered by a joint team from the National Investigation Bureau and the Ghana Police Service revealed that Ayoma was hiding between Shukura and Afienya.
On May 4, 2023, at around 2000 hours, Ayoma was located in his hideout in Afienya and was taken into custody by the Regional Criminal Investigations Department.
During interrogation, Ayoma admitted to the escape attempt in his caution statement.

Why Captain Ibrahim Traore Removed His Beret Before Greeting Opoku Agyemang But Not Mahama
Why Captain Ibrahim Traore Removed His Beret Before Greeting Opoku Agyemang But Not Mahama
News Hub Creator3h
Social media has been rife with the appearance of Mali’s military leader, Captain Ibrahim Traore, with many commenting on his invitation as a dangerous move by John Dramani Mahama because he is not a democratic leader. Meanwhile, the gestures of Ibrahim Traore portray him as a different person from what is being read on social media.
Seeing Captain Ibrahim Traore remove his beret before greeting vice president, her excellency Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang was nothing short of remarkable. This simple yet profound act speaks volumes about his character and the values he upholds. The reason why he removed his beret before greeting Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang with a handshake is because it is an act of respect for her as a woman.
Captain Ibrahim Traore’s gesture carries significant cultural and symbolic weight. It challenges the stereotype that African men do not respect women, sending a clear message to the world that African men deeply honour and value their women like any other continent. Women, after all, are the guardians of traditions, the mothers of humanity, and the embodiment of social values. Mothers rise first to care for the home and rest last, tirelessly nurturing society for good. Such dedication deserves nothing less but utmost respect and reverence.
For a leader as influential as Captain Ibrahim Traore, this moment was more than just courtesy, it was a lesson to all. As a role model to young men across the continent, his actions set a powerful precedence. He demonstrated that leadership is not just about authority but also humility, honour and recognition of vital role of women in the society.

Why the 4 independent MPs in 9th Parliament can’t form their own caucus
The four independent MPs of the 9th Parliament
The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, on Wednesday, January 8, 2024, explained why the four independent members in the 9th Parliament have to join either of the two main caucuses – the Majority and the Minority – instead of forming their own caucus.
According to the Speaker, the issue boils down to the total number of independent MPs in the House and the criteria provided by the Standing Orders of Parliament.
Speaker Bagbin explained that, as provided for in the new Standing Orders of Parliament, independent MPs must meet a minimum requirement of seven members to form their own caucus.
He added that with the number of independent MPs in the 9th Parliament standing at four, they fail to meet the criteria, hence the need for them to join either of the two main caucuses.
“We are still talking about Majority and Minority Caucuses because, by our rules, we have made provisions for a third caucus, and that is the Independent Caucus. But we decided that to constitute a third force, that is the Independent Caucus, you needed to have seven independent members in Parliament.
“As of now, we have four, and so the four have not met the threshold of seven,” the Speaker stated during deliberations by the House on the constitution and selection of committees on Wednesday.
He emphasized that for the independent MPs to be duly recognized as members of their chosen caucus, they would have to officially write to his office informing him of their decision.
“My instructions to the four independent members are that they have the option to decide which of the caucuses to officially transact business with in the House. They have that option, and that is usually done officially in writing to the Speaker of Parliament. I will make it known to the House, and it will be captured in the official records of the House.”
The 9th Parliament of Ghana, inaugurated on January 7, 2024, consists of 183 National Democratic Congress (NDC) members forming the Majority, while the opposition New Patriotic Party, which forms the Minority Caucus, is made up of 88 MPs.
Meanwhile, Kpeli Worlasi of Afram Plains North, Kwame Asare Obeng of Gomoa Central, Stanley Yaw Nandaya of Wulensi, and Kwame Ohene Frimpong of Asante Akyem North, who are the independent MPs in the 9th Parliament, have all announced their decision to join the Majority Caucus.
The 9th Parliament is currently without a representative for Ablekuma North, which has been under serious dispute between the NDC and NPP since the December 7, 2024, election.

GUTA supports reconstruction with GH¢40,000
Fire destroys structures, shops at Kantamanto
The Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) has donated GH¢40,000 to support the reconstruction of the Kantamanto Market, which was ravaged by a fire on January 2, 2025.
The donation, presented by GUTA’s First Vice-Chairman, Clement Boateng, aims to alleviate the plight of traders who lost their livelihoods in the disaster.
During the presentation, Boateng appealed to financial institutions to assist the affected traders by rescheduling their loan repayments to give them more time to recover from their losses. This appeal is particularly significant, as many traders had taken out loans from banks to finance their businesses.
The Kantamanto Market fire has sparked widespread concern and calls for support. Many key figures, including Nana Kwame Bediako, a business entrepreneur and presidential hopeful, as well as former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, among others, have donated funds to support the affected traders.
Boateng stated, “I want to take this opportunity to appeal to the banks because I know that many people here have taken loans from financial institutions. I appeal to these institutions to reschedule loan arrangements, extending the repayment period to give the traders some respite.”
Sports minister appointment should be based on competence, not political affiliation
John Dramani Mahama has not announced his sports minister yet
Former Board Member of Asante Kotoko, Alhaji Abu Lamine, has advised President John Dramani Mahama to select someone who is well-versed in sports and its related activities as the Minister of Youth and Sports.
According to him, there should not be any bias in the appointment towards persons who are more loyal to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and contributed to its success in the general elections.
The former Kotoko board member stated that since Ghanaians rejoice when the national teams are thriving, the president should give priority to the sports minister appointment.
Speaking in an interview with Asempa FM, Alhaji Lamine warned against the government prioritizing political loyalty over competency in choosing the sports minister.
“With sports, it is what gives us happiness. We beg the government to appoint someone who understands the game and can initiate sound policies.
“They should not bring someone just because of political affiliation. It should be someone with sports knowledge that is given the nod as the sports minister,” he said.
Meanwhile, John Mahama is yet to announce his ministerial appointees, with several sports personalities’ names being linked to the role.

Mozambique tense as opposition leader returns from exile
Venâncio Mondlane maintains he won last year’s election alleging that the poll was riggeed
“Back to Gari Soakings Like We Never Left”
Renowned Ghanaian rapper Sarkodie has once again become the center of attention after posting a cryptic message on Twitter: “Back to Gari Soakings like we never left.” While the phrase may seem simple at first glance, it has sparked a heated debate among fans and social commentators, with some interpreting it as a veiled political message and others dismissing it as a casual remark.
Gari Soakings: A Symbol of Hard Times
Gari soakings, a basic dish made from cassava flakes mixed with water, sugar, and sometimes peanuts or milk, is widely regarded in Ghana as a meal for those experiencing financial hardship. Sarkodie’s tweet has therefore been seen by some as a commentary on Ghana’s current socio-economic state.
With a recent change in government following the return of former President John Dramani Mahama to power after eight years, some netizens have drawn parallels between the cryptic post and the country’s cyclical economic challenges. During Mahama’s previous tenure from 2013 to 2016, Sarkodie was vocal about the hardships Ghanaians faced, often criticizing the administration in his music and interviews.
However, Sarkodie was notably silent during the economic struggles under the administration of Nana Akufo-Addo, leading to criticism of bias and accusations of supporting the New Patriotic Party (NPP). Now that Mahama has returned to power, some see Sarkodie’s tweet as a subtle jab, suggesting that the hardships associated with the past administration are resurfacing.
Political Interpretations
One Twitter user wrote, “Sarkodie knows what he’s doing. ‘Back to Gari Soakings’ is a clear reference to Mahama’s return and the tough times that come with it. He’s reminding us of the struggles.”
Another added, “This tweet is deeper than it looks. Sarkodie spoke up under Mahama, but went quiet under Nana Addo. Now that Mahama is back, the narrative of suffering has returned.”
Alternative Views
Not everyone agrees with the political interpretation. Others believe the rapper’s post was casual and not meant to carry any deeper meaning. “Why does everything Sarkodie says have to be political? It’s just gari soakings. Let’s not overthink this,” a fan commented.
Some also argued that the tweet could be a reflection of personal nostalgia or a metaphor for resilience. Sarkodie, known for his grounded nature and connection to his roots, may have been using the phrase to remind fans of simpler times or to tease an upcoming project.
Sarkodie’s Silence
As is typical of the rapper, Sarkodie has chosen not to clarify the meaning behind his tweet, leaving fans and critics to debate its significance. Whether the post is a reflection of personal sentiment, social commentary, or simply a playful statement, it has once again shown Sarkodie’s knack for engaging his audience.
Sarkodie’s cryptic message has stirred mixed reactions, with interpretations ranging from political critiques to casual reflections. Whether intentional or not, his words have reignited conversations about Ghana’s socio-economic struggles and the role of public figures in addressing them.

Unlocking Ghana’s Future: How Salt Can Drive Industrialisation, Transform The Economy and Empower Communities
Prof. Douglas Boateng
Professor Douglas Boateng, a globally renowned industrial engineer, industrialist, Pan-Africanist, chartered director, and social entrepreneur, as well as the Chair of the Minerals Income Investment Fund (MIIF) and Labadi Beach Hotel, has highlighted the transformative potential of Ghana’s salt industry.
In a recent interview with international industrial journalist, Professor Boatenf said while gold, cocoa, and oil have traditionally been the pillars of the nation’s economy, salt; a resource often overlooked, holds the promise to revolutionize Ghana’s economic landscape. It could drive industrialization, generate sustainable jobs, and empower communities while creating high-value allied industries.
“Salt is not just a mineral. It is a foundation for transformation and an opportunity to industrialise our economy,” Professor Boateng remarked. “With strategic development, salt can create jobs for our youth, empower women, and position Ghana as a leader in the global chemical industry.”
He explained the critical role of salt in producing essential chemicals such as chlorine, caustic soda, and soda ash, which are vital for industries like pharmaceuticals, plastics, detergents, and agriculture. With Ghana’s abundant reserves and strategic location, salt offers a unique chance to diversify the economy, reduce reliance on volatile commodities, and secure long-term growth.
“Salt is not just about extraction. It’s about unlocking its potential through value addition,” he added.
“Processing salt into high-value products can provide opportunities for skilled workers, unskilled laborers, and entire communities. From chemical engineers to local entrepreneurs, the ripple effects are immense,” he said.
Professor Boateng underscored the benefits for women and youth, who often face barriers to inclusion in traditional industries. “Imagine women leading salt-processing enterprises or young people gaining stable employment in industries powered by our salt reserves. With the right leadership, investment, and governance, this vision can become a reality,” he stated.
MIIF’s investment in Electrochem Ghana Ltd. has already laid the groundwork for this transformative industry. However, Professor Boateng stressed that further investments are essential. “This is a national opportunity. The question is whether we will take ownership of our resources or allow external interests to dominate. To secure long-term dividends for future generations, we must act decisively,” he cautioned.
Drawing on global examples, he pointed to India’s thriving chemical industry, built on the strategic use of its salt reserves. “India transformed its salt into billions of dollars in export revenue while creating millions of jobs. Ghana has the potential to do even more by leveraging our natural advantages and investing in innovation and infrastructure.”
Discussing MIIF’s strategy, he explained, “The Fund is focusing on salt production areas, including the Central Region, to expand Ghana’s capacity. With coordinated governance and investment, this industry could add tens of billions of dollars to the economy by 2040, while catalyzing industrialization and value creation.”
Professor Boateng outlined the steps needed for success. These include building processing plants, improving transportation networks, and creating storage facilities. Training programs must equip Ghanaians with the skills to work in salt extraction and value-added industries. Empowering women and youth to lead these enterprises is critical. Attracting capital and expertise through public-private partnerships is also essential, alongside policies that ensure sustainable growth.
In his summary remarks, Professor Boateng shared a thought-provoking reflection:
“Salt is more than a resource; it is a symbol of what Ghana can achieve when we think beyond the immediate. It is a seed. If we plant it wisely and nurture it with vision and unity, it will grow into a tree of prosperity. Its branches will offer shade to generations yet unborn.”
“Let us seize this moment. Let us invest in what matters. When a nation believes in its potential, the possibilities are endless. The future does not wait; it belongs to those who prepare for it. Salt can be the cornerstone of Ghana’s industrialization journey; but only if we dare to act today,” he concluded.

‘We made you Speaker’ – Afenyo-Markin slams Bagbin for referring to NPP caucus as ‘Micro-Minority’
Speaker Alban Bagbin (L) and Minority Leader, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) members of the 9th Parliament of Ghana took umbrage with Speaker Alban Bagbin over his description of their caucus as a ‘Micro-Minority’ Caucus.
The NPP members of Parliament (MPs) were up in arms after the Speaker referred to them as a ‘Micro-Minority’ while making a remark during proceedings on Wednesday, January 8, 2024.
The Minority Leader, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, on behalf of his caucus, expressed his displeasure at the Speaker’s description.
He claimed that without the help of his caucus, Bagbin would not have been re-elected as Speaker of the 9th Parliament.
He said that while the Majority Caucus -the National Democratic Congress (NDC) MPs – were scheming to oust Speaker Bagbin, the NPP MPs stood their ground to ensure that he was re-elected.
“Speaker, with respect, I shall respond to what you just said about your duty to protect the ‘Micro-Minority. Mr. Speaker, the rules of this House provide for the Minority and the Majority. Mr. Speaker, we do not have any ‘Micro-Minority. Mr. Speaker, the Minority caucus hereby protests the description given to us by you. Mr. Speaker, we find this unacceptable.
“Mr. Speaker, we seconded your proposal and the motion for your election. Mr. Speaker, when the so-called majority was even conspiring against you, we protested. We stopped them from that conspiracy. Mr. Speaker, it was us, the Minority of conscience,” he fumed.
He added, “This minority is the conscience of this House. Today the so-called Majority could not get its members to come to the House – 61 of you are absent. Mr. Speaker, we don’t accept the description ‘Micro-Minority,’ we are the Minority, simplicita. Speaker, please, kindly, Mr. Speaker, describe us as such. We are the Minority. We are not Micro-Minority.”
Speaker Bagbin accepted fault and said that he, for the sake of records, cannot refer to the NPP caucus as ‘Micro-Minority’.
He, however, cheekily noted that the leaders of the House are free to refer to the NPP caucus as ‘Micro-Minority,’ which further infuriated Afenyo-Markin, who said, “Nobody should ever use the term ‘micro-minority’ to describe the NPP in parliament.”

John Mahama hints at plans to privatise ECG
President John Dramani Mahama
In a bid to address financial mismanagement, inadequate service delivery, and inefficiencies in the energy sector that may have dire consequences for Ghanaians, President John Dramani Mahama has announced that the government is considering the privatization of Ghana’s power distribution company, the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
This move aims to resolve numerous problems within the entire power value chain in the country.
During a meeting with a delegation from the World Bank on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, Mahama noted that leveraging expertise from the Bretton Woods institution is part of a broader strategy to modernise and enhance the performance of the energy sector.
“If we don’t fix the Electricity Company of Ghana, we will continue to have a major problem with our whole power value chain. So, going ahead with privatizing the last point of electricity distribution, bringing in private sector efficiency is something that we want to take up again. We want to speak with the World Bank to get the expertise to be able to do that,” he said.
He asserted that once this strategy is implemented, the growing energy demands of the country will be met.
Meanwhile, energy experts, including the Institute for Energy Security (IES), have attributed the looming power outages to systemic inefficiencies and poor planning by the Akufo-Addo-led government.
The Electricity Company of Ghana in 2022 suffered a GH¢10.21 billion loss, worse than the GH¢1.91 billion recorded in 2021.
This represented more than a 433% loss in 2022, largely due to exchange rate losses resulting from the cedi depreciation and increased costs of distributing power to consumers.
The power distributor’s losses were captured in the latest Auditor General’s Report on the accounts of public boards, corporations, and other statutory institutions in 2023.
For the period under review, ECG’s income increased by 24.1% to GH¢15.03 billion in 2022 from GH¢12.10 billion in 2021, largely due to increased internally generated funds and government grants.
The grants were payments made to power-producing companies by the government on behalf of the power distributor.
Its total expenditure increased significantly by 80% to GH¢25.23 billion in 2022 from GH¢14.02 billion in 2021, mainly due to increases in direct costs and foreign exchange losses.
The increase in direct costs was primarily attributed to increases in the cost of power purchased and transmission costs.

I’m done with Ablekuma North, EC should find a new person – Returning officer
The Electoral Commission (EC) Returning Officer for the Ablekuma North constituency, Vincent Obeng, has announced his decision to step down from the ongoing collation of parliamentary results, citing frustrations encountered during the process.
Speaking to the media on Wednesday, January 8, Mr. Obeng disclosed that out of seven polling stations, results from four had been successfully collated, leaving three outstanding.
He explained that difficulties arose due to the inability of presiding officers to authenticate the statement of poll and the declaration forms.
“I hope you have all seen what is going on. Yesterday, January 7, we were left with seven polling stations to go. We came today, and we have been able to collate results from four out of the seven.
“So, we’re left with three more. We brought our presiding officers here—two came, but they couldn’t authenticate the statement of poll and declaration forms. One said she can’t come. So those are the three left,” he said.
Expressing frustration, Mr. Obeng added, “It’s so unfortunate for me to make this statement, but I’m done with Ablekuma North. The EC should find a new returning officer to continue their work.”
In response, the EC’s Director of Training, Dr. Serebour Quaicoe, expressed regret over Mr. Obeng’s remarks, attributing them to frustration. He reassured the public that the Commission would address the issue and make efforts to bring Mr. Obeng back to complete the process.
The collation process for Ablekuma North has been fraught with tension. Earlier, a scuffle erupted over the inclusion of a disputed pink sheet, further delaying proceedings.
A Presiding Officer, Nathaniel Klimsman Avumeh, denied authenticating figures from his polling station, complicating the collation process.
Tensions escalated when a party official slammed the table of EC officials, triggering chaos among opposing party members. The situation briefly devolved into physical altercations before police officers intervened to restore order.
Scrapping of E-Levy: We live to see if Mahama’s government will stand by their word
Kofi Bentil, Vice President of IMANI Africa
Kofi Bentil, a Vice President of the policy think tank IMANI Africa, has described the E-Levy as the most hated tax he has ever encountered.
The E-Levy is a tax imposed on all electronic money transfers, except those explicitly excluded by law.
The Electronic Transfer Levy Act, 2022 (Act 1075) and the Electronic Transfer Levy (Amendment) Act, 2022 (Act 1089) impose a 1% levy on electronic transfers, which is charged to the transferor at the time of transfer. The levy is collected by the entities listed in the First Schedule of the Act.
Since its introduction by the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo government, the tax has been met with widespread criticism, with many Ghanaians strongly opposing it.
The E-Levy became a key issue in the 2024 elections, with two of the major political parties pledging to scrap it if elected.
Addressing the issue, Kofi Bentil noted that the tax remains the most unpopular in the country’s history. Following the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s victory in the 2024 elections, he expressed hope that the party would fulfill its promise to abolish the levy.
In a post shared on social media, he wrote, “E-Levy is the most hated tax I’ve ever seen!! All candidates pledged to abolish it. We live to see who stands by their word!!”
