Ibrahim Mahama has offered to cover all of Suzzy's medical expenses Ibrahim Mahama has offered to cover all of Suzzy’s medical expenses

Ghanaian businessman and philanthropist Ibrahim Mahama has pledged to cover all medical expenses for Suzzy Pinaman, a second-year student at Adventist Senior High School in Bantama, Ashanti Region, who was shot in the eye by a classmate.

The commitment comes after Suzzy made a heartfelt appeal to Ibrahim Mahama and former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong for assistance to fund her treatment.

On April 4, 2025, during a school break, Suzzy sustained a critical gunshot wound to her forehead when a fellow student, Bernard Amoabeng, allegedly discharged a firearm during an argument about its functionality.

The incident left Suzzy visually impaired, with residual bullet fragments in her eye causing severe pain and preventing her from sleeping or closing her eyes.

Unable to attend school and with her family struggling to afford treatment, Suzzy publicly appealed for help in a video, stating, “Hon. Kennedy Agyapong and Ibrahim Mahama, I am pleading with you to hear my cry and come to my aid. I have no one.”

Following the viral appeal, Ibrahim Mahama, through his aide Rafik Mahama, announced his support.

In a Facebook post, Rafik confirmed that Ibrahim Mahama would fund Suzzy’s medical expenses, both locally and internationally if needed.

“Suzzy will be in Accra on Monday to begin the surgery process. Speedy recovery, Suzzy,” Rafik wrote.

The family according to GhPage which spoke to Suzzy, is expected to arrive in Accra on May 5, 2025, to commence treatment at Dr Agarwals Eye Clinic.

Suzzy was initially rushed to Kwadaso Hospital and later transferred to Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) for emergency surgery to remove the bullets.

Despite efforts, her condition remains severe, prompting plans to fly her abroad for specialized treatment.

Why is Abeiku Santana still on Okay FM during office hours? – Okraku Mantey raises concern

Mark Okraku Mantey has accused Abeiku Santana of breaching Public Service laws Mark Okraku Mantey has accused Abeiku Santana of breaching Public Service laws

Former Deputy Minister for Tourism, Mark Okraku Mantey, has accused Gilbert Abeiku Aggrey, known as “Abeiku Santana,” the Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Tourism Authority, of breaching Public Services Commission regulations.

Commenting on the appointment of media practitioners to various positions by the John Dramani Mahama government in a recent Joy FM interview, Okraku Mantey criticized Abeiku Santana for continuing his media practice during public office hours.

“Why is Abeiku Santana going on air, holding a public office, and still working at Okay FM?” he questioned.

“Abeiku Santana works for the Ghana Tourism Authority, a public office, and is using office hours to work at Okay FM. It’s not acceptable. It’s not,” Okraku Mantey added.

He further argued that, contrary to popular belief, the media in Ghana is not necessarily neutral, particularly toward the New Patriotic Party (NPP), which lost power in the 2024 general election.

“When they were bashing us, I kept telling my NPP colleagues that the media today is not as neutral as they make us believe. You see media people taking positions? Yet, when they were on air, they claimed to be neutral,” he said.

Citing the example of NPP MP for Ofoase-Ayerebi, Okraku Mantey noted that, in contrast to current trends, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah left the media long before entering politics.

“Someone might mention Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, but Honourable Oppong Nkrumah left Joy FM years ago, stayed home, ran his private business, and only then entered politics. But today, you see people leaving media houses and immediately taking up positions,” he said.

Barker-Vormawor rallies GBA members to overturn resolution demanding reversal of CJ suspension

Convener of the Fix The Country Movement and a member of the Ghana Bar Association (GBA), Oliver Barker-Vormawor has called on fellow GBA members to convene a special general assembly to reverse the Association’s recent resolution challenging President John Dramani Mahama’s suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo.

Speaking on TV3’s KeyPoints on May 3, 2025, Barker-Vormawor labeled the resolution as politically driven and a threat to judicial independence.

He criticized the resolution as lacking legal merit, describing it as “an appeal cloaked in impropriety” that fails to meet the standards of a legitimate challenge.

Barker-Vormawor argued that the GBA’s stance disregards established Supreme Court precedent and risks being misinterpreted internationally and domestically as an attack on the judiciary’s autonomy. “History will not forgive us if we let this slide,” he warned, urging members to act swiftly to overturn what he called a reckless move.

Barker-Vormawor emphasized that constitutional interpretation must remain rooted in legal doctrine, not political sentiment, accusing the GBA of injecting politics into a matter of law.

He insisted that the resolution’s wording dangerously implies misconduct by the President, despite clear legal precedent supporting the suspension process.

Echoing similar sentiments, Godwin Edudzi Tameklo, CEO of the National Petroleum Authority, accused the GBA of “manifest hypocrisy” in its commentary on judicial matters.

Edudzi Tameklo highlighted inconsistencies in the GBA’s stance, noting that the Association had criticized President Mahama’s judicial appointments in 2023 under then-Chief Justice Nene Amegatcher but remained silent on similar actions under other administrations.

He referenced the 2023 appointment of Justices Yaw Appau and Gabriel Pwamang to the Supreme Court, where Mahama selected the second- and fourth-ranked candidates recommended by the Judicial Council, prompting strong GBA objections and a Supreme Court challenge.

“How come the bar is only vocal when President Mahama is the one acting?” Tameklo questioned, calling for fairness in the GBA’s approach. He argued that the Association’s current resolution contradicts its earlier position and undermines democratic principles.

Barker-Vormawor’s call for a special assembly aims to realign the GBA’s actions with legal integrity, urging members to reject the resolution and uphold the judiciary’s independence.

Interim coach of Asante Kotoko, Abdul Karim Zito, has urged his team to remain focused ahead of their clash with Hearts of Oak.

The Porcupine Warriors will face their fiercest rivals at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday, May 4, as part of Matchday 30 in the 2024/25 Ghana Premier League season.

Kotoko have secured four consecutive victories against the Phobian Club in all competitions.

Speaking ahead of the match, Zito emphasized the need for his team to stay focused to continue their strong run against their archrivals.

“We are going in with the mentality of winning. They [Hearts of Oak] know very well that they’ve lost to Kotoko for some time, so I think they will double their efforts,” he said.

“What we have to keep in mind is that, despite the favorable results in the last four matches, we still need to stay focused and maintain a good attitude toward our objective to secure the result,” Zito added.

The highly anticipated game is scheduled to kick off at 15:00 GMT.

We told you NDC walks with dumsor but you didn’t listen

NPP 2024 flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia NPP 2024 flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia

Former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has reminded Ghanaians of his party’s warnings about the National Democratic Congress (NDC) ahead of the 2024 elections.

According to him, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) cautioned that the NDC and “dumsor” (power outages) are inseparable, indicating that the party is incapable of resolving the country’s power crisis.

However, Ghanaians did not heed his warnings and have now learned the hard way.

Bawumia stated that a constant power supply is essential for a 24-hour economy, but the NDC has failed to deliver this since coming to power, delaying their flagship 24-hour economy program.

“Can you have a 24-hour economy with dumsor? It is not possible. We warned Ghanaians that the NDC and dumsor walk together. Once they take one step forward, dumsor follows. Ghanaians didn’t listen, but today it is clear we have a major problem. We managed this for eight years, but for them, four months in, it’s a big challenge,” he told enthusiastic party supporters during his Thank You Tour.

Bechem United will aim to end their six-match winless streak when they host Legon Cities at Nana Fosu Gyeabour Park on Sunday, May 4, 2025.

The Hunters, currently in 10th place with 40 points, have struggled recently but are hoping for a strong finish to the season.

The visitors, Legon Cities, are in a precarious position. Unless something dramatic happens in their remaining games, they could be relegated to the lower division.

The Royals sit in 17th place with 25 points from 29 matches and are also winless in their last seven games.

This is a must-win game for Legon Cities, as their fate could be sealed if they fail to secure a victory.

NPP criticizes President Mahama for ignoring salary concerns on May Day

President John Dramani Mahama President John Dramani Mahama

A member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Communications Team, Fiifi Decker, has expressed disappointment in President John Dramani Mahama’s failure to address workers’ salaries during the 2025 May Day celebrations on Thursday, May 1.

In an interview on Happy 98.9 FM’s Epa Hoa Daben show with Reynolds Agyemang, Mr. Decker noted that although President Mahama recently announced a 10% salary increment for public sector workers, the raise was widely criticized as insufficient. Despite these concerns, no adjustments were made.

He contrasted this with recent hikes in utility tariffs by the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC)—14.75% for electricity and 4.02% for water—which take effect tomorrow, May 3, 2025.

Decker argued that the utility increases surpass the salary increment, exacerbating the financial burden on public workers. He expected the President to use the May Day platform to announce a further salary adjustment aligned with the rising cost of living, but unfortunately, the President did not.

He also expressed concern over the ongoing power crisis, commonly referred to as “Dumsor,” which has worsened despite the increase in electricity tariffs.

He emphasized that workers, such as hairdressers, barbers, and tailors, depend heavily on electricity to run their businesses and are being adversely affected.

Mr. Decker urged President Mahama to implement effective measures to resolve the ongoing electricity challenges and ease the economic pressure on Ghanaian workers.

Ghana captain Jordan Ayew increased his English Premier League goal tally to five this season after scoring in Leicester City’s 2-0 victory over already relegated Southampton on Saturday, May 3, 2025.

Ayew doubled the lead for the Foxes, who have been relegated from the top flight with matches to spare, in the 44th minute.

He took a free-kick that hit the wall, but the ball came straight back to him, and he fired a low-effort shot from 22 yards that beat Ramsdale.

He has now scored three goals in 16 Premier League appearances against the Saints.

Ayew was substituted in the 70th minute by Jeremy Monga.

NPP National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye (Nana B) NPP National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye (Nana B)

NPP National Organizer, Henry Nana Boakye, claims that President John Dramani Mahama is planning to run for a third term in office, citing his appointment of new Supreme Court Justices and an alleged ploy to dismiss Chief Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo as evidence.

According to Nana Boakye, there is what he describes as a “sinister motive” behind the controversy surrounding the judiciary.

He explained on Peace FM’s “Kokrokoo” show that the President seeks to gain absolute control over the judiciary, as he currently holds executive and parliamentary control.

He stressed that the President’s nominees to the Supreme Court are part of a grand strategy to pack the court with loyalists to support his bid for a third term in government.

“He knows it will be difficult to get a referendum. So, what I can do is pack the court with judges who will favor me, then sponsor a judicial interpretation of Article 62, which states that everybody has two terms,” he told host Nana Yaw Kesseh.

“Therefore, he seeks an interpretation to mean that the two terms can be continuous and consecutive. He wants to rely on such an interpretation to go for a third term,” he added.

Condemning this move, Nana Boakye labeled His Excellency John Mahama a “tyrant.”

He said, “It is worrying that our democratically and constitutionally elected President is becoming a constitutional tyrant and a dictator.”

Olivier Verdon scored the opening goal just before halftime, and Swiss-Ghanaian striker Kwadwo Duah sealed the victory for the Eagles.

The speedy winger has won league titles in each of his five seasons with Ludogorets, accumulating nine trophies with the club.

This season, Tekpetey made seven appearances across all competitions, scoring twice.

He is expected to join his teammates for a title celebration at the Ludogorets Arena before their match against Levski.

Ghana Cedi May Strengthen to GH¢10 per Dollar with Policy Reforms

0

Ghana’s cedi could appreciate to GH¢10 against the US dollar if government policies such as the 24-hour economy initiative and agricultural modernization achieve their goals, financial economist Professor Lord Mensah has projected.

The currency currently trades at GH¢15 in Accra forex bureaus and GH¢14.15 officially, according to the Bank of Ghana, marking a modest recovery from its GH¢16 low earlier this year.

Mensah linked the cedi’s stabilization to fiscal discipline under the current administration. In a May 3, 2025, social media post, he wrote, “The cedi is appreciating due to fiscal consolidation and financial discipline. Once the 24-hour economy and agriculture policies take effect, the cedi will sell at 10 cedis to the dollar.” His remarks, originally posted in full capitalization on X (formerly Twitter), highlight cautious optimism among analysts about Ghana’s economic trajectory.

While some observers initially tied the cedi’s rebound to global dollar trends, Mensah emphasized domestic factors, including reduced government spending and investor confidence in flagship programs. The 24-hour economy policy, designed to extend commercial activity across sectors, aims to curb unemployment and attract foreign investment. Parallel agricultural reforms targeting export growth and food security could further stabilize the currency by reducing import reliance.

Economists warn, however, that sustained gains depend on consistent policy execution and external variables such as commodity prices and global financial conditions. Achieving GH¢10 to the dollar a psychological milestone would require prolonged macroeconomic stability, a challenge for emerging economies navigating post-recovery phases.

Ghana’s strategy mirrors approaches seen in nations like Rwanda, which stabilized its currency through targeted reforms after periods of economic turmoil. Such efforts often hinge on balancing domestic priorities with external pressures, including fluctuating demand for key exports like cocoa and gold. As debates continue over the feasibility of Mensah’s forecast, analysts stress that rigorous implementation and adaptability to geopolitical uncertainties will determine whether these policies translate into lasting resilience. The coming months are likely to test Ghana’s ability to sustain momentum while addressing structural vulnerabilities in an increasingly volatile global market.

The cedi is just appreciating on the heels of fiscal consolidation and financial discipline by the current administration. By the time 24-hour economy and agriculture policies kick in, the Cedi will be selling at 10 Cedis to the dollar. Let me go change my dollars, quick.

US President Donald Trump has attracted criticism from some Catholics after posting an AI-generated image of himself as the Pope.

The picture, which was shared by official White House social media accounts, comes as Catholics mourn the death of Pope Francis, who died on 21 April, and prepare to choose the next pontiff.

The New York State Catholic Conference accused Trump of mocking the faith. The post comes days after he joked to reporters: “I’d like to be Pope.”

Trump is not the first president to be accused of making a mockery of the Catholic faith. Former US President Joe Biden caused outrage a year ago when he made the sign of the cross at a pro-abortion access rally in Tampa, Florida.

Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni declined to answer questions about Trump’s post during a briefing with journalists on Saturday. The Vatican is preparing to host a conclave to choose Francis’s successor beginning on Wednesday.

The image posted by Trump on Friday night features him wearing a white cassock and pointed miter, traditionally worn by a bishop. He wears a large cross around his neck, and has his finger held up, with a solemn facial expression.

The New York State Catholic Conference, which represents bishops in New York, took to X to criticise the picture.

“There is nothing clever or funny about this image, Mr President,” the group wrote.

“We just buried our beloved Pope Francis and the cardinals are about to enter a solemn conclave to elect a new successor of St Peter. Do not mock us.”

Left-leaning Italian former Prime Minister Matteo Renzi also blasted Trump’s post.

“This is an image that offends believers, insults institutions and shows that the leader of the right-wing world enjoys clowning around,” Renzi wrote in Italian on X.

But the White House rejected any suggestion that the Republican president was making fun of the papacy.

“President Trump flew to Italy to pay his respects to Pope Francis and attend his funeral, and he has been a staunch champion for Catholics and religious liberty,” said press secretary Karoline Leavitt.

Trump posts AI-generated photo of himself as pope, drawing internet outrage

0

President Donald Trump posted an AI-generated photo showing himself as the pope ahead of this week’s gathering of cardinals to choose a new leader of the 1.4-billion-strong Catholic Church, and just days after he joked he would “like to be pope”.

Trump, who is not a Catholic and does not attend church regularly, posted the image on his Truth Social platform late on Friday, less than a week after attending the funeral of Pope Francis, who died at 88 last month. The White House then reposted it on its official X account.

The image shows an unsmiling Trump seated in an ornate chair, dressed in white papal vestments and headdress, with right forefinger raised.

The irreverent posting drew instant outrage on X, including from Republicans against Trump, a group that describes itself as “pro-democracy conservative Republicans fighting Trump & Trumpism.” The group reposted the image, calling it “a blatant insult to Catholics and a mockery of their faith”.

Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni declined to comment on the image during a briefing with journalists about the process of electing a new pope, which begins on May 7.

Former Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi wrote on X: “This is an image that offends believers, insults institutions and shows that the leader of the global right enjoys being a clown. In the meantime, the American economy risks recession and the dollar loses value.”

Closer to home, the Catholic bishops of New York state also expressed their displeasure on X.

“There is nothing clever or funny about this image, Mr. President,” they wrote. “We just buried our beloved Pope Francis and the cardinals are about to enter a solemn conclave to elect a new successor of St. Peter. Do not mock us.”

Trump on Tuesday had jokingly said he would be his own first choice to become pope, before adding that there was a “very good” candidate in New York, Cardinal Timothy Dolan.

Dolan, the archbishop of New York, is not on the short list of possible contenders for the top spot, but it does include another American, Cardinal Joseph Tobin, archbishop of Newark, New Jersey.

There has never been a pope from the United States. In mid-February, both Trump and the official White House social media accounts posted a different AI-generated image of the president wearing a crown and captioned “CONGESTION PRICING IS DEAD.

Manhattan, and all of New York, is SAVED. LONG LIVE THE KING!”

In West Palm Beach, Debbie Macchia, 60, stood waiting with a dozen other supporters as Trump’s motorcade arrived at his golf club on Saturday morning.

“He was clearly joking. Clearly joking,” said Macchia, who is Jewish. “But I wouldn’t want to see them do anything sacrilegious with the pope, or anything.”

GEXIM seeks strategic partnership to finance Ghanaian businesses

0

In line with President John Dramani Mahama’s agenda to position Ghanaian businesses to play a major role in driving Ghana’s economic growth, management of the Ghana Export – Import Bank (GEXIM) is seeking strategic partnership with the country’s development partners, development finance institutes, export credit agencies and other global investors to support Ghanaian businesses.

The Acting Chief Executive of GEXIM, Sylvester Adinam Mensah led a management team from the bank to engage various financial institutions and funding agencies on the side-lines of the recently held 2025 Spring Meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank Group (WBG) in Washington DC., from 21st to 26th April 2025.

The GEXIM team met with the leadership of the Export – Import Bank of the United States of America (US EXIM Bank), African Export – Import Bank (Afreximbank), Saudi Fund for Development (SFD), Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development (KFAED), International Trade Administration of the U.S. Department of Commerce, US Africa Trade Desk and Cygnum Capital.

Sylvester Mensah revealed that the engagements were to explore strategic collaborations to secure funding solutions to assist Ghanaian businesses to explore new markets.

“We had the opportunity to share our strategic direction and immediate priorities in line with President Mahama’s resetting agenda in addition to some of our bankable pipeline projects in our meetings. I am particularly excited about the prospects of our meetings based on the positive and encouraging feedback received so far and convinced of securing funding to support Ghanaian businesses to enable them to contribute to economic development. Currently, the high cost of local financing with short-term interest rates is a disincentive for local traders, inhibiting the expansion of most Ghanaian businesses”, he emphasised.

Over the years, financing has remained one of the key barriers to the development of Ghanaian businesses.

A 2020 survey by the Ghana Enterprises Agency (GEA) revealed that 60% of Small and Medium-sized Enterprise (SME) owners identified funding, inadequate skills in financial management and business planning as significant challenges facing their businesses.

A-Plus hasn’t been removed from Majority caucus – Mahama Ayariga

0

The Majority Leader in Parliament, Mahama Ayariga, has rejected media reports suggesting that Kwame Asare Obeng, also known as A-Plus, has been removed from the Majority Caucus WhatsApp platform following a reported fallout with Attorney General Dr. Dominic Ayine.

In a statement issued on May 3, 2025, Ayariga called the report, originally published by GhanaWeb, “entirely false and misleading.”

“The attention of the Office of the Majority Leader has been drawn to a publication by GhanaWeb on May 3, 2025, captioned: ‘A Plus reportedly removed from Majority Caucus WhatsApp platform following feud with AG Ayine.’ The said publication is entirely false and misleading,” the statement read.

Ayariga clarified that A Plus, the Member of Parliament for Gomoa Central, remains an active member of the Majority Caucus and continues to be part of its official communication platform.

“For the avoidance of doubt, Hon. Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A Plus, remains a full member of the Majority Caucus in Parliament and continues to be on the official Majority Caucus WhatsApp platform. There has been no removal, and no such decision has been taken by the leadership of the Caucus,” the statement concluded.

Ayariga called on GhanaWeb to retract the publication and issue a correction to prevent the spread of misinformation.

NPP’s ‘Thank You’ tour hasn’t turned ‘chaotic’ – Salam Mustapha

0

National Youth Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Salam Mustapha, has dismissed claims that the party’s ongoing “Thank You” tour has descended into chaos, calling such assertions completely unfounded.

This follows controversy surrounding the tour, which has drawn criticism over remarks made by former presidential candidate Dr Mahamudu Bawumia. Additionally, former presidential aspirant Kennedy Agyapong withdrew from the tour after a KNUST student was reportedly stabbed during one of its sessions.

Speaking in an interview on Channel One Newsroom on Saturday, May 3, Mustapha firmly rejected the idea that the tour, designed to express gratitude to party supporters and energise the grassroots, has been plagued by disorder.

“Not at all [things have not become chaotic]. It cannot be chaotic. Absolutely not, it cannot be chaotic. It is not chaotic,” he insisted.

He emphasised that the tour is in line with the NPP’s long-standing traditions and has always been conducted in a structured and orderly fashion.

“On any account, at any material point in time, the NPP has done thank you tours—this is not new,” he said.

Obetsebi Lamptey Interchange Phase II suspended over delayed funds – Engineer

0

The Chief Resident Engineer of the Obetsebi Lamptey Interchange project, Ing. Owusu Sekeyere Antwi, has disclosed that phase II of the major road project has been suspended due to funding delays caused by outstanding payments owed to the contractor.

Speaking to the media on Saturday, May 3, Ing. Antwi revealed that while only a few works remain to be completed, construction activities have slowed significantly because of resource constraints.

“We are left with a few things to be done, but the contractor has slowed down a little because of resources. In terms of outstanding IPCs, we have over 20 million euros to pay, but the Minister of Finance last year did some payments which were not paid out of the IPCs, so we need to balance all those things to be able to know how much we owe the contractor,” he stated.

His comments come amid growing concern over delays in the delivery of key road infrastructure projects across the country. The Obetsebi Lamptey Interchange is considered a critical link in Accra’s urban road network, expected to ease vehicular congestion in the  Greater Accra Region.

Meanwhile, contractors working on the project have appealed to the government for expedited financial intervention to prevent further disruption.

A parliamentary oversight committee also pledged to engage the relevant ministries to help resolve the bottlenecks and ensure timely completion.

In a related development, Chief Resident Engineer for the Ofankor-Nsawam Road Project, Ing. Kwabena Bempong,  confirmed that the project has also experienced a 15-month delay.

Initially set for completion in July 2024, the road project is now expected to be finalised sometime between mid-2025 and late 2025.

Ing. Bempong attributed the delay to two key challenges, namely the delays in compensating affected residents and difficulties in relocating utility infrastructure along the construction path.

Bawumia Links NDC to Renewed Power Crisis in Post-Election Critique

Dumsor

Former Ghanaian Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia has doubled down on his pre-election warnings about the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and its handling of Ghana’s electricity shortages, known locally as dumsor.

Speaking to supporters during his ongoing “Thank You Tour,” Bawumia argued that the current administration’s struggles to stabilize power supplies validate his earlier claims that the NDC cannot resolve the country’s energy challenges.

“We told Ghanaians that the NDC and dumsor walk together, but they didn’t listen,” Bawumia said, referencing his 2024 campaign rhetoric. He tied the resurgence of blackouts to the collapse of the NDC’s flagship 24-hour economy policy, questioning how such an initiative could function without reliable electricity. “Can you have a 24-hour economy with dumsor? It is not possible,” he asserted, drawing cheers from New Patriotic Party (NPP) loyalists.

The former vice president contrasted the NDC’s four months in office with the NPP’s eight-year tenure, claiming his party limited severe outages to eight weeks during its governance. His remarks align with broader NPP efforts to reframe its 2024 electoral loss by emphasizing policy contrasts, particularly on energy management.

The term dumsor, a Ga word meaning “off-on,” became emblematic of Ghana’s 2012–2016 power crisis under former President John Mahama, with outages costing the economy an estimated $1 billion annually. While the NDC has historically defended its infrastructure investments, including the Ameri and Karpower plants, Bawumia’s latest critique revives debates over which party bears greater responsibility for the sector’s cyclical challenges.

Energy experts note that Ghana’s current grid instability stems from multiple factors, including transmission bottlenecks and financial strains on utility providers. The recent shutdown of the 560MW Sunon Asogli Power Plant, attributed to debt disputes, has exacerbated public frustration. NDC officials, however, dismiss Bawumia’s claims as politically motivated, arguing that inherited debts and legacy infrastructure issues require time to resolve.

Public sentiment remains divided, with many Ghanaians recalling the social and economic disruptions of past dumsor periods. Businesses, particularly small enterprises and hospitals, report renewed anxiety over erratic power supplies, though the government insists the situation is temporary.

Bawumia’s focus on energy policy underscores its enduring significance in Ghanaian elections, where voters often treat reliable electricity as a baseline expectation. His rhetoric also reflects internal NPP strategies to consolidate opposition narratives ahead of the 2028 polls, positioning the party as a steward of stability against what it frames as NDC mismanagement.

As Ghana grapples with these familiar challenges, the cyclical nature of the dumsor debate highlights deeper systemic issues, including underinvestment in renewable energy and politicized oversight of state utilities. With both parties leveraging the crisis for electoral gains, analysts stress that lasting solutions will require bipartisan cooperation rather than partisan blame-shifting. For now, the lights and the political jostling remain flickering.

Thank You Tour: Let’s not deepen the cracks

0

Salam Mustapha, the National Youth Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has called for unity within the party, urging members not to exacerbate the current internal tensions following the fallout from the ongoing “Thank You” tour.

Speaking to Channel One Newsroom on Saturday, May 3, Mustapha emphasized that while disagreements within the party are natural, they must be handled with care to avoid further divisions.

His comments come amidst growing calls for a suspension of the “Thank You” tour after internal wrangling, including the withdrawal of Kennedy Agyapong, a former flagbearer aspirant.

“What I will rather ask is that we do not deepen the cracks. It is okay to disagree but we should also mind the language,” Mustapha said, stressing the importance of maintaining decorum even amid differences.

Despite the controversy surrounding Agyapong’s pull-out, Mustapha remains optimistic that the tour will continue without disruption. He pointed out that the Thank You tour was progressing steadily, with recent events in the Bono East and Savannah regions running smoothly.

The NPP now faces the challenge of unifying its members and ensuring that the tour continues without further internal strife.

“Only $1.75m Reached the Vendor” – AG Uncovers Missing Millions in Cybersecurity Contract

0

A major financial scandal has rocked Ghana, with revelations from the Attorney General’s office detailing how a former top intelligence official, his wife, and a banker allegedly conspired to embezzle over GH¢111 million in state funds as reported by Ghana Web.

Kwabena Adu Boahene, the former Director General of the National Signals Bureau (NSB), his wife Angela Adjei-Boateng, and their former bank officer Mildred Donkor have been named in court documents as central figures in the alleged scheme.

They face charges including stealing, money laundering, and causing financial loss to the state.

In one case, Adu Boahene signed a $7 million cybersecurity contract with an Israeli firm in 2020.

However, only $1.75 million reportedly reached the intended vendor, while the remaining GH¢39.5 million was funneled to the couple’s private firm, BNC Communications Bureau.

According to the Attorney General, GH¢27.1 million was moved directly from NSB’s Fidelity Bank account to a private BNC account at UMB under the guise of software payment.

Mildred Donkor, who previously managed the couple’s banking affairs at UMB, was also a director of Advantage Solutions Limited—a company allegedly used to conceal the diverted funds. Investigations revealed that the funds were used to acquire luxury properties and vehicles both locally and abroad.

In a separate case, Ghana Water Company reportedly paid over GH¢62 million to BNC Communications for services originally contracted to the NSB.

“Mr Adu Boahene provided the account details of his private company,” the AG said, indicating the misuse of public contracts.

More charges are expected in the coming weeks as investigations continue.

The two Ghanaian giants go head to head on Matchday 30 of the Ghana Premier League at the Accra Sports Stadium, with both looking ahead to claim the bragging right after the game.

“For me, I know it going to be a very difficult game because we always say form doesn’t count in Kotoko and Hearts of Oak matches but I know that the Porcupine will definitely win because they’ve been under a lot of pressure and I know that they will go to Accra to deliver. Black Star Experience key to Ghana’s branding – Edem Tsotorme

0

Entertainment journalist, Edem Mensah Tsotorme has expressed optimism about the newly launched Black Star Experience, describing the initiative as a promising step toward repositioning Ghana as a cultural and creative powerhouse in Africa.

Speaking on The Chat on Channel One TV on Saturday, May 3, Tsotorme praised the concept and execution of the launch but emphasised the importance of sustained commitment to fully realise its potential.

“If you look at the whole set-up and the kind of speeches that we heard and the conversation, the memorial that we heard after the launch looks promising. But I just want to believe that it will not rest there,” he said

President John Dramani Mahama officially unveiled the Black Star Experience on Thursday, May 1, as part of his 120-day social contract, aimed at enhancing national identity and leveraging Ghana’s rich creative and cultural heritage for economic development.

Tsotorme explained that the initiative ties into the broader strategy of nation branding, where countries actively cultivate a positive global image to boost trade, attract investment, and promote tourism.

“If you look at the whole idea about the Black Star Experience, it revolves around nation branding. With nation branding, what you do is you try to create a unique image, or you create a unique appeal for people to have that kind of thought that anytime your name comes to mind, they can have that positive feeling,” he noted

He further highlighted the economic potential of such branding, pointing out that a positive national reputation naturally draws investors and trade partners.

“There is also an economic impact on nation branding. When a country is known for a certain positive reputation, it attracts trade, investors, and that importance is enormous,” he added.

The Black Star Experience is expected to serve as a unifying platform for Ghana’s arts, culture, tourism, and creative sectors, positioning the country as a leading destination for African excellence and innovation.

Health Minister in a pose with some members of the baord after inauguration Health Minister in a pose with some members of the baord after inauguration

The Minister for Health, Mr. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has officially inaugurated the newly constituted boards of major health institutions, including Korle Bu, Komfo Anokye, Tamale, Cape Coast, and Sunyani Teaching Hospitals, the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), and the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Mr. Akandoh underscored that the appointments are not ceremonial but represent a “solemn call to service” that demands integrity, discipline, and a results-oriented approach.

He announced that all board members will be required to sign performance contracts outlining key performance indicators, with regular progress reports to be submitted directly to his office.

“We require more than good intentions—we need measurable outcomes and a relentless focus on results,” the minister emphasized.

To strengthen hospital operations, Mr. Akandoh directed all teaching hospitals to maintain two distinct accounts: one dedicated to infrastructure maintenance and another for servicing essential medical equipment. “Maintenance is not an optional extra but a foundational obligation,” he stressed.

Turning to the growing threat of opioid abuse, the minister called on the FDA to step up its regulatory and enforcement mechanisms. “We cannot and will not allow this crisis to spiral further,” he declared.

In addressing the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons, Mr. Akandoh highlighted the Mahama Cares Initiative, which aims to eliminate financial barriers to treatment for non-communicable diseases.

He urged the college to expand specialist training programs in critical areas such as cancer care, dialysis, and organ transplantation to ensure equitable healthcare access across the country.

“These are responsibilities to be honored, not privileges to enjoy,” the minister concluded, charging all board members to uphold the highest standards of public service and accountability.

BEK condemns NPP ‘Thank You’ tour stabbing incident

0

The Business Executives for Ken (BEK), a group that sympathises with the vision and aspirations of former MP for the Assin Central, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, has condemned the reported stabbing incident of a student of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), during the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) national ‘Thank You’ tour in Kumasi, the Ashanti Regional capital.

The incident consequently led to the immediate withdrawal of Mr. Agyapong from the tour on safety and security grounds for him and other party members.

The NPP’s national ‘Thank You’ tour has been largely characterised by tensions, with notable party bigwigs like Mr. Agyapong, who contested as a flagbearer in the party’s primaries leading to the 2024 general elections; and the party’s Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe Abronye, popularly known as Abronye DC, seen involved in heated alterations in Berekum in the Bono Region during the tour.

Unfortunately, the situation got out of control when a group of young men suspected to be party vigilantes allegedly stabbed a KNUST student who is believed to be a staunch supporter of Mr. Agyapong.

In a statement, the group condemned the incident and called for tolerance among party leaders and members.

“We want to state unequivocally that, as a progressive group, we condemn this violent incident. The practice of democracy should be receptive of varying views and opinions without inflicting bodily pains on others who do not share in our ideologies. Such acts are archaic and backward, and they should not be countenanced in our political space”, they said.

The group also “respectfully” called on the Police Service to “swiftly” investigate the matter and bring the perpetrators to book.

“We further urge the police service to be on the alert and tighten security on such political tours in order to prevent the recurrence of such unfortunate incidents. No blood stain must be seen in the course of any political activity”, they intimated

Additionally, the group entreated the party leadership to offer a fair playing ground for all candidates seeking to contest for the flagbearship position, insisting that “the party should not project any candidate over another and should allow the grassroot and the delegates to freely elect the people’s leader who will be accepted by all.”

The group also commended Mr. Agyapong on his withdrawal from the tour, describing it as a “display of leadership and for prioritizing human life over his political ambitions.”

The group assured Mr. Agyapong of their continued “unflinching support”, emphasizing that they believe “he is the most competent leader who can bring about the needed economic transformation and discipline” for Ghana.

Ghana’s Executive-Judiciary Ties Spark Calls for Constitutional Reform

0

Martin Kpebu
Martin Kpebu

Legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has intensified scrutiny of Ghana’s 1992 Constitution, likening its framework for judicial appointments to a “buy-one-get-one-free” arrangement that grants the executive branch disproportionate influence over the judiciary.

During a recent appearance on TV3’s KeyPoints, Kpebu criticized Article 144, which empowers the president to appoint justices “in consultation” with the Council of State and Parliament, calling the provision a gateway to political interference.

“Our constitution is structured so that controlling the executive comes with indirect control of the judiciary,” Kpebu stated on May 3. “Through appointments and financial leverage, the judiciary risks becoming an extension of executive power.” He condemned this dynamic as “unwieldy” and “undemocratic,” arguing it undermines the separation of powers a cornerstone of democratic governance.

Kpebu further rebuked the constitutional text for assuming politicians would exercise authority with unimpeachable integrity, a premise he dismissed as naive. “The drafters imagined presidents as philosopher-kings, but humans are flawed,” he said. “Laws must account for human shortcomings, not wishful thinking.” His remarks amplify longstanding demands for reforms to insulate judicial processes from partisan manipulation and clarify appointment procedures to ensure transparency.

The critique extends beyond constitutional structure to institutional conduct. Kpebu separately challenged the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) for labeling its recent statement on Chief Justice Kwasi Anin-Yeboah’s suspension a “resolution,” a term he claims politicized the issue. “Calling it a resolution invites partisan interpretation,” he argued. “Had it been framed as an appeal for restraint, I would endorse it.” He also questioned the GBA’s decision-making process, citing inadequate member consultation and poorly timed deliberations during its annual conference.

Kpebu’s dual focus on constitutional flaws and institutional rhetoric underscores a broader reckoning with Ghana’s judicial independence. Analysts note that vague constitutional language, such as Article 144’s “consultation” clause, has fueled executive overreach concerns for decades. These debates resurface amid public skepticism over delayed court rulings and allegations of judicial corruption, reinforcing calls for systemic safeguards.

Ghana’s judiciary, once hailed as a regional beacon of stability, now faces pressure to address structural vulnerabilities. Legal scholars argue that constitutional clarity is vital to restoring public trust, particularly as the nation grapples with the legacy of past authoritarian regimes. Kpebu’s analogy of a “buy-one-get-one-free” system while stark reflects deepening frustration over the blurred lines between political and judicial authority. As demands for reform gain momentum, his critique encapsulates a central challenge: crafting laws that constrain power rather than enable its abuse.

Kennedy Agyapong will be NPP’s 2028 flagbearer

0

Prophet Bernard Elbernard Nelson-Eshun and Kennedy Agyapong Prophet Bernard Elbernard Nelson-Eshun and Kennedy Agyapong

The General Overseer of Spiritlife Revival Ministries, Prophet Bernard Elbernard Nelson-Eshun, has shared a vision predicting Kennedy Agyapong’s emergence as the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.

In a Facebook post on May 3, 2025, Prophet ElBernard described a spiritual experience where he witnessed internal party deliberations doubting Agyapong’s leadership capabilities.

However, the vision revealed a strong support from the youth rallying behind Agyapong, leading to a nationwide movement that eventually swayed party elites to endorse him.

“I will see and hear a confidential discussion among the elite, prominent figures in politics and members of parliament… They will be deliberating, asking, “Can he lead our party? Does he have what it takes?” And many among them will say, “We will not support his candidacy.”

“I will see a group of passionate young people who have embraced the vision and message of Kennedy Agyapong. They will be energized, rallying others to join the movement. It will grow rapidly, with youth from all political backgrounds uniting around him. Some will even leave their former parties, seeing their future in his leadership,” he wrote.

According to Prophet Nelson-Eshun, this strong movement by the youth will eventually lead to Kennedy Agyapong being the major flagbearer for the NPP in 2028.

“In the conclusion of the vision, I will witness Kennedy Ohene Agyapong elected as the flagbearer of the party. A new movement will emerge, one that brings renewed strength, unity, and energy to the New Patriotic Party. I will marvel at how the choice of one man could revive the party and prepare it with vigor for the 2028 election,” he added.

This prophecy aligns with previous predictions by other religious figures, including Rev Isaac Owusu-Bempah, who in November 2023, asserted that Agyapong would become Ghana’s president, contingent upon certain conditions and divine guidance.

Kennedy Agyapong, a seasoned politician and businessman, served as the Member of Parliament for Assin Central until January 2025.

Despite losing the NPP’s 2024 flagbearer race to Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Agyapong’s political journey appears to be far from over.

Bawumia Urges NPP Unity, Cautions Against Media Infighting

0

Dr Mahamudu BawumiaDr Mahamudu Bawumia
Dr Mahamudu Bawumia

Former Ghanaian Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia has called for an end to public clashes among members of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), warning that internal attacks disseminated through media platforms undermine the party’s cohesion and electoral prospects.

His appeal came during the NPP’s post-election “thank you tour” in the Savannah Region on Saturday, where he addressed regional stakeholders amid ongoing reflections on the party’s 2024 campaign challenges.

Bawumia highlighted how rival factions weaponized public criticisms from within the NPP during the election cycle, stating, “Our own utterances against each other, against the party, and against our government were used against us.” He revealed that political opponents funded media advertisements featuring damaging remarks made by NPP members, amplifying divisions during critical campaign phases. “Such conduct does not help the unity and strength of our party,” he asserted, urging members to resolve disputes privately rather than through press statements or social media broadsides.

The former vice president’s remarks underscore growing concerns about factionalism within the NPP following its contentious 2024 electoral performance. While not explicitly naming specific incidents, his reference to media-sponsored attacks aligns with reports of party figures openly criticizing leadership decisions and candidate strategies in the months preceding the polls. Analysts note such infighting often distracts from policy messaging and erodes voter confidence.

Bawumia’s plea for tolerance marks his latest effort to position himself as a unifying figure within the party, which faces a pivotal transition ahead of Ghana’s 2028 general elections. His Savannah Region address emphasized mutual respect as foundational to rebuilding trust among grassroots supporters and regional organizers, particularly in areas where internal discord reportedly dampened voter turnout.

Political observers point to a broader pattern across African democracies where intra-party conflicts, once aired publicly, become fodder for opposition campaigns. The NPP’s experience mirrors challenges faced by Ghana’s National Democratic Congress (NDC) in previous cycles, when leaked recordings and press statements fueled perceptions of disarray. As digital media accelerates the spread of political rhetoric, leaders like Bawumia face heightened pressure to balance free expression with strategic discipline a tension central to modern party governance.

The NPP’s leadership has yet to announce formal measures to address internal communication protocols, but Bawumia’s public intervention signals recognition that electoral success may hinge on presenting a united front. With Ghana’s political landscape increasingly polarized, the party’s ability to heed this call could shape its trajectory in the coming years.

“I commend the dedication and resilience of our journalists and media professionals. Continue to uphold the highest standards of journalistic integrity, fostering informed public discourse, and contributing to a stronger, more vibrant Ghana,” President Mahama stated.

Reiterating his government’s commitment to press freedom, the president referenced remarks by the Minister in charge of Government Communications at the recent GJA Honours Night, where the government pledged to support a ‘free and thriving media space.’

“Let’s work together to enhance our democracy through truth, accuracy, and ethical reporting, ensuring a free and responsible press that empowers citizens and strengthens our nation.

“As my Minister for Government Communications stated on Friday at the GJA Honours Night, the government will continue to work towards a free and thriving media space in Ghana,” he added.

The statement comes amid global celebrations of World Press Freedom Day, which highlights the importance of independent journalism and the challenges faced by media professionals worldwide.

Agyapong Allies Condemn Abronye’s Remarks as Divisive in NPP Rift

0

Kwame Baffoe Abronye

Supporters of New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential aspirant Kennedy Agyapong have rebuked Bono Regional Chairman Kwame Baffoe Abronye for comments they claim undermine party cohesion, urging unity ahead of the 2028 elections.

The backlash follows Abronye’s Friday appearance on Wontumi Radio, where he targeted Agyapong in a critique described by allies as inflammatory and counterproductive.

In a statement, Agyapong’s camp labeled Abronye’s remarks “regrettable and disappointing,” stressing the need for disciplined dialogue among party members. “While we have forgiven the comments, such language fractures the unity essential for our collective success. Our focus must remain on defeating the NDC, not internal divisions,” the group asserted. They appealed for calm, discouraging retaliatory actions and reaffirming Agyapong’s commitment to “peace and discipline.”

The exchange highlights simmering tensions within the NPP as it navigates post-election strategizing. Analysts note that internal discord, particularly between factions aligned with potential presidential contenders, risks diluting efforts to reclaim power in 2028. Agyapong, a vocal figure during the 2023 primaries, retains a significant support base advocating for grassroots-driven leadership.

Ghana’s political history shows that intra-party disputes, if unchecked, often embolden opposition gains. The NPP’s ability to reconcile competing ambitions while projecting solidarity will likely influence its electoral viability. With the National Democratic Congress (NDC) capitalizing on governance critiques, the NPP faces mounting pressure to present a cohesive front. While robust debate is inherent in democratic processes, the line between constructive criticism and divisive rhetoric remains precarious, testing the party’s resilience in a polarized climate.

Australia PM Albanese makes stunning comeback with landslide win

0

Labor’s Anthony Albanese has defied the so-called “incumbency curse” to be re-elected Australia’s prime minister in a landslide.

Official vote counting won’t finish for days, but Albanese’s centre-left government will dramatically increase its majority after the conservative Liberal-National coalition suffered a thumping defeat nationwide.

“Today, the Australian people have voted for Australian values: for fairness, aspiration and opportunity for all; for the strength to show courage in adversity and kindness to those in need,” Albanese said.

Coalition leader Peter Dutton, who lost his own seat of 24 years, said he accepted “full responsibility” for his party’s loss and apologised to his MPs.

Following the result, UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio both said they looked forward to deepening their bilateral relationships with Australia.

Cost-of-living concerns – particularly the affordability of healthcare and housing – dominated the five-week campaign, but international relations also reared its head, with the issue of how to deal with Donald Trump looming large over the election.

Dutton was seen by many as Australia’s Trump, which appeared to go down badly with voters, despite his attempts to shake off comparisons made between his policies on immigration, public sector cuts and China, and the Trump administration.

Labor has seen swings towards them right across the country – a rare feat for a second-term government in Australia – and Albanese becomes the first prime minister to win back-to-back elections in over 20 years.

The party’s success has also tempered a trend of voters abandoning the two major parties, which was the big story of the last election in 2022.

Labor is on track to finish with 86 seats, the Coalition about 40, and the Greens Party with one or two, according to projections by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC). Other minor parties and independents are ahead in nine seats.

That represents an increase of nine for Labor and a significant drop in support for the Greens. However most “teal” independents have been returned in their more conservative, inner-city electorates.

It’s a remarkable turnaround from the start of the year, when polling put Albanese’s popularity at record lows after three years of global economic pain, tense national debate, and growing government dissatisfaction.

In his Saturday night victory speech, Albanese addressed some of the election’s key issues, which also included migration, climate change and energy.

He reiterated his promises to make healthcare – most critically GP appointments – more affordable, put buying a house in reach for more Australians, and do more to address climate change and protect the environment.

Notably, he also vowed to advance reconciliation for First Nations people: “We will be a stronger nation when we Close the Gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians.”

It’s a veiled reference to the biggest moment of Albanese’s tenure, the failed Voice referendum of October 2023, which sought to recognise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the constitution, and simultaneously establish a parliamentary advisory body for them.

Australia remains the only Commonwealth country to have never signed a treaty with its Indigenous people.
Soul-searching after emphatic result

The Voice was one of Albanese’s most defining policies, and his most striking setback – it was overwhelmingly rejected after months of often toxic and divisive national debate.

Indigenous Australians have told the BBC they feel like they’ve been forgotten by policymakers since.

The prime minister also found difficulty trying to walk a middle path on the Israel-Gaza war, raised eyebrows after buying a multi-million dollar beach pad in the midst of a housing crisis and, like other leaders globally, he grappled with tough economic conditions.

With tanking poll numbers, Albanese was broadly seen as the underdog coming into the election, and was poised to be the next victim of the “incumbency curse” – a term to explain a global trend where struggling constituents were turfing out governments after a single term.

Dutton, on the other hand, looked like he was writing a great political comeback – he was on the edge of bringing his party from its worst loss in 70 years back into office in a single term.

It has been almost a century since a first-term government has failed to win re-election, but as Australian National University Emeritus Professor John Warhurst said: “Dutton entered the campaign [year] in front. It was his to lose.”

Instead tonight Dutton has overseen a party loss so emphatic he has lost his own electorate of Dickson, to Labor’s Ali France.

“I love this country and have fought hard for it,” he told supporters in Brisbane, conceding defeat.

“We have been defined by our opponents in this election which is not a true story of who we are, but we will rebuild from here and we will do that because we know our values, we know our beliefs, and we will always stick to them.”

His campaign was marred by unforced errors: including a series of policy backflips which caused confusion, awkward mistakes on important issues like cost of living and, perhaps most memorably, accidentally booting an AFL ball into a cameraman’s head.

“The opposition has been shambolic,” Prof Warhurst says.

But the government – while resolute and disciplined in its campaign – was timid. It’s strategy was largely allowing voters to judge Dutton and his party, rather than advancing bold or convincing policies, analysts say.

And that’s something we heard from voters throughout the campaign too.

While the Coalition turns to licking its wounds and choosing its next leader, it will again have to reckon with its direction.

Last election, analysts and some of the party’s own MPs cautioned against a move towards the right. They questioned whether Dutton – a polarising figure considered by many to be a conservative hard man – was the right person to rebuild support, particularly in the moderate areas where they lost a lot of it.

After a campaign which in its dying days ventured into culture war territory and what some say are “Trumpian” politics, the Coalition is going to have to ask those questions again – and if they want to be competitive, perhaps find different answers.

“We have to stop drinking the Kool-Aid from the fire hose and we need to have a serious review… we delude ourselves that we are just a few tactical devices away from winning an election,” former Liberal strategist Tony Barry told the ABC.

But meanwhile Labor has to decide what it wants to achieve with the large mandate Australia has handed them.

Albanese’s “incumbency curse” turned out to be a gift, with international uncertainty appearing to have swayed voters in countries like Canada away from change. Likewise, Australia voted for stability.

Labor struck a “middle-of-the-road path” with its a policy platform, but can now afford to be braver, says Amy Remeikis, chief politicial analyst at the Australia Institute think tank.

“That was the path that they took to the election, and that is what they are seeing has paid dividends for them. But the question now is: ‘Will Labor actually do something with power?’”

‘CJ requested 5 Judges, what’s the fuss about 7?’ – Justice Abdulai questions

0

Law lecturer and private legal practitioner, Justice Abdulai, has dismissed criticisms surrounding the nomination of seven new Court of Appeal judges to the Supreme Court, describing the concerns as misplaced and hypocritical.

Speaking on The Big Issue on Channel One TV, on Saturday, May 3, Justice Abdulai argued that neither the timing of the appointments nor the perceived lack of regional or political balance holds merit, especially when the nominations came at the request of the judiciary itself.

“In fact, I do not think that the timing is an issue at all. I do not think that the issue about balancing, or not balancing is an issue at all,” he stated.

He added: “Because it is the same Chief Justice that requested for five anyway. If you requested for five and you are getting seven, should that be an issue? So clearly I think we’re being hypocritical.”

His remarks come amid heated public discourse following President John Dramani Mahama’s nomination of seven judges to the apex court.

While some critics have raised questions about the timing and political implications of the appointments, Abdulai insisted that the focus should remain on judicial efficiency and institutional needs rather than speculation.

The appointments are expected to go before Parliament’s Appointments Committee in the coming weeks for vetting.

Government moves to revive ‘troubled’ telco AT, eyes investment and job security

Sam George is the Minister of Communication, Digitalisation, and Innovation Sam George is the Minister of Communication, Digitalisation, and Innovation

The Minister of Communications, Samuel Nartey George, has assured Ghanaians that the government is taking deliberate steps to revive the struggling state-owned telecommunications company, AT, amid long-standing financial and operational challenges.

Describing AT as “a troubled company,” the minister acknowledged that while the company faces serious problems, some dating back as far as 2009, it still boasts some of the most skilled professionals in the sector and has managed to stay afloat through difficult times.

“There are hard conversations to be had and tough decisions to be made, but we will take them,” he said. “We are committed to saving the company, protecting the jobs of 500 permanent staff, and supporting the livelihoods of over 10,000 others who depend on AT.”

He stressed that the ultimate goal is to ensure Ghanaians get value for money through improved customer service, noting that AT belongs wholly to the state.

“This is a 100% government-owned company it belongs to all of us. We must make it work for our own people,” he said. “I wasn’t appointed to lament, I was appointed to fix the lamentations. And we will fix them.”

The Minister revealed that a number of proposals have already been submitted, and the government is hopeful that within the next eight weeks, a clear roadmap will emerge to put AT back on a strong economic footing.

Acknowledging the company’s significant debt burden, he confirmed that the Ministry has begun engaging with creditors to restructure what is owed, an essential step if AT is to attract new investment.

“You can’t attract investment if you don’t deal with the debt,” he stated.

On the issue of Spectrum, the Minister explained that the resource is not handed out freely.

“When Spectrum is allocated, companies are given 30 days to pay. I don’t know if AT, in its current form, can meet that requirement. But we are also conducting a Spectrum rationalisation to ensure better use and commercial value.”

He said the government is exploring a range of policy and structural options, including technical management support to stabilise AT.

“I’ve received three proposals already from external companies interested in investing in AT. But this time, we’ll be cautious and ensure that any commitments made are fully enforced,” he said.

The Minister emphasised that the government’s immediate focus is to restore the company, protect jobs, and deliver better service to the Ghanaian people.
