NIB records GH¢74.38 million profit in first half of 2025 after years of losses

0

The National Investment Bank (NIB) The National Investment Bank (NIB)

The National Investment Bank (NIB) has posted a profit before tax of GH¢74.38 million for the first six months of 2025, marking a significant turnaround amid ongoing government recapitalisation efforts.

This marks a strong recovery from the same period in 2024, when the bank recorded a loss of GH¢44.79 million.

Notably, this is the first time since 2016 that NIB has published its financial statements, a move the bank says reflects renewed operational efficiency, effective cost management, and a successful capital recovery strategy.

The bank also reported that customer deposits have increased to GH¢7.3 billion, while its Capital Adequacy Ratio (CAR) improved to 41.34%, significantly above the regulatory minimum.

NIB’s equity position also showed improvement, growing to GH¢892.27 million, effectively reversing its previous negative position. Total assets surged to GH¢8.55 billion, up from GH¢5.71 billion in June 2024, while net operating income rose to GH¢326.28 million.

The Managing Director of NIB, Dr Doliwura Zakaria, said the bank is firmly on a path of positive growth.

“This publication is a declaration of our readiness. It reflects not just our financial health, but the strength of our people, systems, and vision for the future. We are firmly on a growth trajectory,” he noted.

He explained that the release of the financial statements is a strategic step in NIB’s transformation journey, intended to demonstrate renewed stakeholder confidence and full compliance with regulatory expectations under the Companies Act, 2019 (Act 992), and the Banks and Specialised Deposit-Taking Institutions Act, 2016 (Act 930).

NIB’s Head of Marketing and Corporate Communications, Marian Toure, added, “This disclosure reaffirms our commitment to accountability and signals a new era of transparency and responsible banking. We look forward to engaging stakeholders, partners, and customers in this revitalised phase of growth.”

Woman leads church in thanksgiving for Chelsea’s Club World Cup triumph

The Chelsea fan giving a testimony at church The Chelsea fan giving a testimony at church

It’s not every day that a football match turns into a Sunday sermon, but for one passionate Chelsea fan, the Blues’ stunning 3-0 demolition of Paris Saint-Germain at the FIFA Club World Cup was more than a game; it was a reason to gather the faithful and lift voices in thanksgiving.

On Sunday, July 20, 2025, exactly a week after Chelsea’s shock victory in New Jersey, which crowned them world champions for the first time in the expanded 32-team format, a video has gone viral of a woman leading an entire church congregation in praise and prayer, all in Chelsea’s name.

She did not hold back as she sang, and testified before the altar and brimming with gratitude for what she believes is divine favour on her beloved team.

She sang with Chelsea’s name, and when it was her turn to speak, she poured out her heart in words that blended football passion with deep faith:

“God has truly blessed Chelsea. Not long ago, we gathered to thank Him for our 1-0 victory, but now, he has given us three goals, so we have come again to share his goodness and testify to his blessings,” she said.

To her, the emphatic score line wasn’t just a tactical masterclass by Cole Palmer and his teammates; it was a holy sign.

“You did not let us be put to shame. These three goals stand for the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, a sign that God truly cherishes this team,” she added.

But the prayer didn’t stop with Chelsea. In an emotional twist, she turned her praise towards home, interceding for Ghana’s own giants, Asante Kotoko, to be lifted just as Chelsea were.

“We also lift Kotoko before you. May you bring victory to the Asante land just as you did for Chelsea. Continue to bless Chelsea and its players, and keep all the supporters in your care,” she said.

ICC consider three new member applications from Africa

0

Cricket's world governing body has been based in Dubai since 2005 Cricket’s world governing body has been based in Dubai since 2005

Three African countries will apply to become Associate members of the International Cricket Council later this year.

Burkina Faso, Mauritius and Burundi are all planning to submit the relevant paperwork with the ICC’s membership committee before December’s deadline.

BBC Sport understands the trio had hoped to be considered by the governing body at this year’s ICC Annual General Meeting.

However, none of the three countries were able to progress further with their applications due to various administrative queries raised by the ICC.

At last weekend’s AGM in Singapore the ICC increased their total number of members to 110 after Zambia and Timor-Leste were both given Associate status.

Zambia were expelled by the ICC in 2021 for problems relating to their governance but have now been readmitted.

The ICC said after their AGM that USA Cricket will “remain on notice” amid ongoing membership compliance concerns.

USA Cricket was at serious risk of being suspended by the ICC, which would have resulted in a cut to central funding and the United States’ men’s and women’s sides barred from ICC events.

BBC Sport has seen evidence that USA Cricket has addressed five of the eight issues flagged by the ICC relating to governance, finance and administration.

Rather than an outright suspension the ICC have opted to give USA Cricket more time to resolve remaining issues with the caveat that the global governing body’s board “reserve the right to take such actions as it deems appropriate”.

One key area Cricket USA are under pressure to address is satisfying the criteria laid out by the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee for National Governing Body (NGB) status.

NGB status is required for a sport to participate in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, where cricket is set to return after an absence of 128 years.

“USA Cricket is required to undertake comprehensive governance reforms, including but not limited to completing free and fair elections within three months,” said an ICC statement.

USA Cricket was initially placed on notice at the ICC’s 2024 AGM in Sri Lanka for “non-compliance with ICC membership criteria”.

Cricket Chile were placed on notice at the same time but have addressed issues relating to its governance structure to the ICC’s satisfaction.

After crying ‘Walahi, we will rescue Ghana’, you’ve been caught in such a ‘cheap way’ – Kpebu taunts Mustapha Hamid

0

Renowned private legal practitioner, Martin Kpebu, has taken a swipe at former Chief Executive Officer of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Dr Mustapha Abdul-Hamid, who has been charged together with eight others for their alleged involvement in a GH¢280 million extortion and money laundering scheme.

Speaking in an interview on TV3 on July 19, 2025, Kpebu expressed shock over the fact that Dr Mustapha Abdul-Hamid could be implicated in such a matter.

He asserted that the former NPA boss should be the last person to be caught in such a corruption scandal because of his pronouncements before his government came to power.

“By all means, the OSP will have something up his sleeves that we don’t know about. Because we all know that it’s not a child’s play to lay criminal charges on someone. So, if they didn’t have the evidence, they wouldn’t do that. If you read the facts, you see that they say that about GH¢24 million went through Mustapha Hamid directly. This means that they would be bringing the very persons who put that money in his hands. Because you would have no basis for saying he received GH¢24 million directly if you cannot adduce that evidence.

“The total figure is GH¢280 million. They are saying that out of that figure, Mustapha Hamid – Walahi, Walahi, Walahi – received 24 million directly in his hands. And so that means that they would be bringing the witnesses,” he said.

“When we started hearing this through the grapevine, I was like, ‘Walahi, Walahi, Walahi’ man… About eight years ago, he said the NDC had run the country down, we need to rescue this country and shed tears. He should have known that he should be the last person to be caught like that – in a very cheap manner,” he added.

The lawyer clarified that even though the former NPA boss is innocent until proven guilty by the court, the evidence shows that he took monies that were not entitled to him.

By Iddi Yire

Accra, July 21, GNA – Dr Edward Omane Boamah, the Minister of Defence, has outlined a 15-point vision for retooling the Ghana Armed Forces as part of efforts to enhance its capabilities and readiness.

Among the 15 points vision are a one-billion-dollar investment to modernize Ghana Armed Forces over three and a half years.

Others are advanced tactical vehicles, body armour, and digital communication systems for the Army and maritime enhancement.

Dr Omane Boamah stated this when he took his turn at the Government Accountability Series for the first half of the year at the Presidency in Accra.

The Government Accountability Series is being organized by the Presidency Communications Bureau as part of efforts to promote transparency and accountability in governance.

The rest of the three- and half-year vision for retooling the Ghana Armed Forces include new air assets, including Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), for the Ghana Air Force to operate effectively and the construction of 10,000 housing units across all garrisons.

The rest are enhancing local production through Defence Industries Holding Company Limited (DHOC) and aligning defense strategy with national development goals.

Regarding security challenges, he cited threats such as chieftaincy, illegal mining (galamsey), violent extremism with foresight and readiness, and preparing for floods, droughts, and food security.

The Minister mentioned promoting diversity and inclusion in the Armed Forces, ensuring the well-being of veterans through the Mahama cares, building more health facilities, and additional funding from DHOC.

On National Service, Dr Omane Boamah said they would be training 10,000 youth in disaster preparedness and patriotism.

Touching on national unity and progress, Dr Omane Boamah emphasized collective responsibility and unity for Ghana’s progress.

“As we stand at the threshold of a new era, the Mahama Second Coming, and resetting Ghana, let us remember that our strength lies in not just our arms, but in our unity, our resilience, and our unwavering commitment to Ghana’s progress,” the Minister said.

“Today, we have outlined a vision for a modernized, industrialized, and inclusive defense sector that serves as a beacon of hope and stability in our region,” Dr Omane Boamah stated.

“Let us march forward together with Ghana Armed Forces as our guardians of peace and architects of prosperity.”

He encouraged Ghanaians to march forward together with the Ghana Armed Forces as their guardians of peace and architects of prosperity.

He further appealed to Ghanaians to uphold the sacred covenant to protect every Ghanaian and propel their nation towards a safer, stronger, and more prosperous future.

He said Ghanaians must recognize that defence went beyond the booths, barracks, and borders, because it affected everything.

“Security is the seabed of progress. Let our guiding principles be one Ghana, one destiny.”

The Minister reiterated that modernised, expanded, responsive and happier Military was the goal.

He underscored that Ghana Armed Forces service was not only a duty; stating that it was a national covenant.

Nairobi seminar ends with call for global action on North Korean rights

0

African civil society leaders, policymakers, and human rights advocates have joined international voices in calling for urgent global action to address the deepening human rights crisis in North Korea, following the conclusion of a high-level seminar in Nairobi.

Held at the Marriott Hotel and themed “Enhancing Human Rights Activities in North Korea”, the seminar brought together more than 30 participants from Africa, Asia, and Europe, including North Korean escapees, to exchange insights and build momentum for coordinated international engagement.

“This seminar marks a new chapter in how diverse regions can come together to uphold the universal values of human dignity and freedom,” said Prof. Hung Kook Park, the lead organiser.

“We are witnessing a growing wave of moral solidarity from Africa to the Korean peninsula.”

The event, co-organised by the World Institute of Intercultural Services and Tongil Majung of South Korea, culminated in the adoption of a joint resolution.

The resolution urges stronger international monitoring, more African representation in global human rights dialogue, and increased support for awareness and resettlement initiatives for North Korean escapees.

The emotional highlight of the seminar came with personal testimonies from North Korean defectors, which underscored the harsh realities faced by millions under one of the world’s most repressive regimes.

Signed by delegates from three continents, the resolution symbolises a unified front against human rights violations and a call for renewed commitment to justice, peace, and dignity—values the participants say must transcend borders.

Organisers expressed hope that the Nairobi seminar will serve as a launchpad for deeper African engagement in global human rights efforts and a louder voice for those who continue to suffer in silence.

‘Promote positive music, not senseless music’

0

Dennis Tawiah is the CEO of Akwaaba UK Dennis Tawiah is the CEO of Akwaaba UK

The CEO of popular UK-based event organising company, Akwaaba UK, Dennis Tawiah, has urged media platforms in Ghana to promote songs with positive lyrics and themes.

Speaking in an interview with GhanaWeb on X Spaces on July 18, 2025, Tawiah addressed the negative publicity surrounding hardworking artistes and other stakeholders in the music industry, especially in the media.

He added that such platforms tend to champion senseless songs, citing instances where artistes singing incoherent music are embraced by the media over truly talented musicians.

“The media has a role to play in all this. The media tends to project music that would not take us anywhere.

“Recently, on one Ghanaian platform, one artiste was spitting some bars that did not make sense, and they picked it up and were making a big deal out of it. I was like, ‘Hold on a minute, there’s better music out there. This guy is just like a comedian?’ Yet, everyone was hyping him like he had done something creative,” he said.

He challenged media stakeholders to reconsider the kind of content they promote and focus on promoting positive music.

“You have a big platform; let’s promote good music. Let’s promote positive music. Let’s put the rubbish music aside,” he said.

Tawiah’s plea comes amid what some have termed the glorification of low-quality tracks, which they say undermines Ghana’s cultural brand and fails to support hardworking artistes.

As CEO of one of the premier Ghanaian music promoters abroad, Tawiah has long advocated for unity among artistes, the media, and event organisers to propel Ghanaian music onto the global stage.

Pacquiao draws with Barrios in comeback fight

Manny Pacquiao (L) was held to a majority draw by 30-year-old Barrios at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas play videoManny Pacquiao (L) was held to a majority draw by 30-year-old Barrios at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas

Former senator of the Philippines and professional boxer, Manny Pacquiao, says he wants a rematch against WBC welterweight champion Mario Barrios after missing out on the title on his return to boxing.

The 46-year-old Filipino, returning to the ring four years after retiring, was held to a majority draw by 30-year-old Barrios at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on July 19, 2025.

One judge scored the fight 115-113 in Barrios’ favour, while the other two scored it 114-114

Pacquiao, who has won 12 world titles across eight weight divisions, was ahead on the judges’ scorecards in the 10th round but lost the last three.

“I thought I won the fight. It was a close fight. My opponent was very tough. It was a wonderful fight,” Pacquiao said.

Asked if he wants a rematch, he said: “Yes, of course.”

Pacquiao became the oldest fighter to win the welterweight title when he did so at the age of 40 in 2019.

No fighter has won a major world title after being inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame; Pacquiao was given the honour in June 2025.

Pacquiao, who failed to win re-election as a senator in the Philippines government in May, was granted a title shot because of the WBC’s rules on former champions coming out of retirement.

He spent two months in a training camp before the fight.

“His stamina is crazy,” Barrios said.

“He’s still strong as hell and his timing is real. He’s still a very awkward fighter to try to figure out,” he added.

Kenyan police arrest rights activist Mwangi over role in deadly protests

Kenyan human rights activist Boniface Mwangi Kenyan human rights activist Boniface Mwangi

Kenyan police have arrested prominent human rights activist Boniface Mwangi and plan to arraign him on Monday on suspicion of facilitating “terrorist acts” linked to deadly anti-government protests last month, police said on Sunday.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said on X that detectives had arrested Mwangi at his home in Machakos County on Saturday and had seized “two unused tear gas canisters and one 7.62mm blank round”, along with two mobile phones, a laptop and notebooks.

In addition to the terrorism charges, Mwangi is also due to be arraigned for unlawful possession of ammunition, the X post said.

A representative for Mwangi could not immediately be reached for comment.

Hundreds of Kenyans took to the streets last month following the death in police custody of political blogger Albert Ojwang – reigniting a protest movement fuelled by anger over the cost of living and what activists say is police brutality and corruption.

The government-funded Kenya National Commission on Human Rights said 19 people were killed in the protests on June 25 that DCI referred to in its post about Mwangi. Another 31 people died when protests flared again on July 7, the commission said.

The protesters are mostly young adults desperate for job opportunities who organise through social media channels.

Mwangi is a well-known activist who once ran for parliament on an anti-corruption platform.

In May, he was arrested and deported from neighbouring Tanzania, where he had travelled to observe a hearing in a treason case against detained opposition leader Tundu Lissu.

He said afterwards that members of the Tanzanian security forces had sexually assaulted him during his detention, and on Friday he filed a complaint at the East African Court of Justice in connection with those allegations.

Wiawso residents laud Government’s decision to pay allowances to assembly members

0

By Alex Baah Boadi

Sefwi-Wiawso (WN/R), July 21, GNA – Residents of Sefwi-Wiawso in the Western North Regional capital have lauded the National Democratic Congress (NDC) led administration for the payment of allowances to Assembly members.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), the residents commended the initiative, stressing that it would go a long way to enhance local governance since it would go a long way to make the assembly members more effective in their various electoral areas.

“Assembly members play a critical role within the local government concept and giving them allowances would enhance local participation, since most of them are the first point of call in issues of local governance, problem solving and local development,” Mr Kwabena Nkuah, an opinion leader indicated.

Others were of the view that as much as the government deserved commendation, unit committee members should also be considered since they also played a crucial role in ensuring assembly members performed creditably.

Mr Farouk Ahmed Omar, Assembly member for Market Area and Asawinso zonal council chairman, told the Ghana News Agency that the gesture was a welcoming news since that was the first time assembly members would be getting monthly allowance.

He commended President John Dramani Mahama for the achievement and appealed for the prompt payment of the allowance which he said would help solve petty challenges at the various electoral areas.

The assembly member used the opportunity to appeal to the local government ministry to consider creating additional electoral areas, especially within the Wiawso Municipality since many of the exiting electoral areas were too large for just one assembly member to effectively handle.

The government last week released the first tranche of Gh25 million for the payment of nontaxable allowance to assembly members across the country.

Adutwum hails NPP renewal after National Delegates conference

0

New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, has lauded the party’s recent National Delegates Conference, describing it as a resounding demonstration of unity, energy, and renewed purpose.

In a Facebook post following the conference, Dr Adutwum said the event reaffirmed the NPP’s strength and vitality, signalling a new era of growth for the party.

“The National Delegates Conference served as a powerful reminder that the New Patriotic Party remains vibrant, purposeful, and ready for renewal,” he wrote.

According to the former Education Minister and MP for Bosomtwe, the gathering reflected the party’s core ideals of service, sacrifice, and progress.

“Our shared ideals, service, sacrifice, and progress resonated through the crowd, and in that unity, I saw hope,” he added.

The former Education Minister and presidential aspirant pledged to play a key role in rebuilding the party with a clear vision and a focus on national development.

“As we rebuild, we do so not with fear but with steadfast faith in our people, our values, and the vision of a Ghana that thrives through education, innovation, and opportunity for all,” Dr Adutwum stated.

He described the moment as the beginning of a resurgence for the NPP, emphasising the need to reconnect with the party’s grassroots and present Ghanaians with a refreshed agenda for progress.

“The resurgence of our party has begun, and I am proud to be part of this historic journey,” he declared.

Dr Adutwum concluded by expressing hope for the future of both the party and the nation.

“May God bless every patriot, our great elephant party, and the nation of Ghana,” he said.

MP Defends 1D1F Incentives –

0

Michael Okyere Baafi

Former Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry and Member of Parliament for New Juaben South, Michael Okyere Baafi, has dismissed claims that businesses abused the erstwhile New Patriotic Party (NPP) government’s flagship One District, One Factory (1D1F) incentives programme.

Addressing journalists in Parliament last Friday, Mr. Baafi addressed misconceptions surrounding the structure and implementation of the 1D1F policy, insisting that the incentives under the initiative were transparently administered and subject to strict eligibility criteria.

“I was hoping to address this matter on the floor of Parliament, but unfortunately, I was not given the opportunity. I feel compelled to clear the air, especially in light of suggestions that businesses under the 1D1F programme have abused government incentives. That is entirely inaccurate,” Mr. Baafi stated.

He explained that the 1D1F policy is structured as a two-tier programme, consisting of Greenfield and Brownfield businesses. Greenfield projects refer to entirely new businesses that were incorporated after the policy’s inception, while Brownfield projects involve existing businesses that are facing challenges, such as financing or operational constraints, and require government support to continue or expand operations.

“The government’s role in 1D1F is purely facilitative. It remains a private-sector-led initiative. Government involvement is meant to stimulate participation by offering standardised incentives—not direct financial handouts or unchecked benefits,” he emphasised.

Mr. Baafi strongly refuted the Majority Leader’s statement on the floor which alleged that companies under the programme had misused the incentives granted by the state.

“That claim is unfounded. There’s no evidence to support it. The programme was designed with transparency and fairness, and every applicant had to go through a rigorous vetting process,” he stressed.

Under the 1D1F initiative, participating companies benefit from a comprehensive incentives package including, a five-year corporate tax holiday that exempts companies from the standard 25% tax rate; and import duty waivers on machinery and raw materials essential for production.

“These incentives are not unusual; they’re global best practices in industrial development,” Mr. Baafi said and added, “No country achieves successful industrialisation without offering support to its investors. If you want to stimulate growth in your real and productive sectors, incentives are essential.”

Responding to concerns that some firms may have gained access to the programme through undue advantage, the former Deputy Trade and Industry Minister assured that every company underwent a detailed evaluation process before being accepted into the programme.

“We do not admit businesses into the 1D1F scheme overnight. There are inspections, feasibility studies, and consultations with professional auditors and consultants to ensure the viability and sustainability of these ventures,” he said.

The Minister of Defence, Dr Edward Omane Boamah, has assured the public that the government will continue to uphold law and order in conflict-prone areas, especially where chieftaincy disputes are rife.

He emphasised the need to clearly distinguish between criminal acts and traditional matters to maintain peace and justice.

Speaking during the Government Accountability Series on Monday, July 21, Dr Boamah stressed that this approach is crucial to ensuring that individuals who exploit traditional tensions to commit crimes are held accountable under the law.

“We shall always separate crimes from traditional matters, enabling us to deal appropriately and legally with criminals who foment trouble in the name of chieftaincy conflict,” he stated.

Dr Boamah acknowledged the persistent instability in parts of the country, particularly in Bawku and Alavanyo, but gave the assurance that the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) remains vigilant and fully engaged in monitoring these areas.

“We acknowledge that the situation in Bawku and Alavanyo and their immediate surroundings remains volatile. The Ghana Armed Forces is actively monitoring and has put in place robust mechanisms to ensure any potential escalation is swiftly contained in the interest of the people and long-lasting resolution of the conflict through dialogue,” he indicated.

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to dialogue as the preferred path to achieving lasting peace but warned that violent actors hiding behind tradition would face the full force of the law.

Thief sought refuge within local church in Hohoe in the Volta Region after failed robbery attempt Thief sought refuge within local church in Hohoe in the Volta Region after failed robbery attempt

A suspected thief sought refuge within a local church in Hohoe in the Volta Region after a failed robbery attempt.

In an attempt to escape the fury of irate community youth who pursued him, he ran into a church for cover.

According to a post on X by Sikaofficial, dated July 21, 2025, the suspect attempted to escape the fury of the youth by running to a church, but the experience was short-lived, as he was picked up by the police to face the full rigours of the law.

The caption that accompanied the X post read, ” The suspect, a middle-aged man, is accused of targeting the homes of individuals when they are away at Sunday morning service. Fortunately, he was allowed to rest peacefully in the church with angry youth agitating outside until police officers arrived to apprehend him.”

One of the victims expressed his frustration, saying, “I don’t want him to be beaten by the angry mob, so I am closing the door. But your face is captured if you like; come again,” he said to the thief.

“He should have been baptized before being taken away—that’s the work he does. Every Sunday, he comes to operate in people’s homes while we are at church. Fortunately, he was caught today. When the angry youth intended to beat him, he ran to hide in the church. He should thank the pastor; otherwise, the youth would have dealt with him quite harshly,” the man added.

What appeared to hurt the youth the most was the fact that the suspected thief had been making away with food prepared in anticipation for the lunch after church services on Sundays.

“He stole all our balls of banku that we had prepared and kept in the kitchen. Why didn’t he run to hide in a mosque? He’s a Muslim. We’re very disappointed and angry about his actions,” he lamented.

The Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana (IEAG) has raised concerns over the lack of inclusive consultation by the Ministry of Finance ahead of the Mid-Year Budget Review scheduled for Thursday, July 24, 2025.

The Association claims it was excluded from a recent Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) meeting focused on proposed VAT reforms, despite being a key player in Ghana’s trading sector.

Speaking to Citi News on Sunday, July 20, 2025, the Executive Secretary of the IEAG, Samson Asaki Awingobit, said the government’s approach to stakeholder engagement has not been transparent.

“I was in a meeting last week when I heard that the GRA was holding discussions with the business community on VAT reforms. I reached out to their communications officer and asked, ‘Which stakeholders are you talking to, if we weren’t invited?’” he stated.

According to him, GRA officials claimed they were engaging stakeholders in phases and would reach out later.

However, with only days to the budget review, the IEAG says it has still not been contacted.

The Association is urging the Finance Ministry to broaden the consultative process to ensure that all voices within the trading sector are heard before any new tax measures are introduced.

How Mourinho sneaked into Chelsea dressing room in a laundry basket after UEFA ban in 2005

0

Mourinho hid in a laundry basket back in 2005 Mourinho hid in a laundry basket back in 2005

It remains one of the most outrageous tales in modern football, and now, Jose Mourinho has finally admitted it’s true; he really did hide in a laundry basket to get around a UEFA ban and deliver his team talk to Chelsea’s players.

Back in 2005, Mourinho was hit with a two-match touchline suspension just before Chelsea’s crucial Champions League quarter-final clash with Bayern Munich.

The ban meant the fiery Portuguese manager couldn’t be anywhere near the dugout or even in the dressing room on match day.

But true to his reputation for bending the rules to win, Mourinho came up with an audacious plan to defy UEFA’s watchful eyes.

“I go to the dressing room during the day, so I was there from midday, and the game is seven o’clock. I just want to be in the dressing room when the players arrive,” Mourinho revealed years later on beIN Sports.

Newspapers first reported rumours of the laundry basket caper back in 2007, but it wasn’t until recently that Mourinho opened up about how he and Chelsea’s kit man, Stewart Bannister, pulled it off.

“I went there and nobody saw me. The problem was to leave after. And Stewart Bannister, the kit man, put me in the basket. It was a little bit open so I could breathe,” he said.

But smuggling the ‘Special One’ out proved far trickier than sneaking him in. Suspicious UEFA officials were determined to catch him red-handed.

“But when he is taking it outside the dressing room, the UEFA guys were following and desperate to find me, so he closed the box and I couldn’t breathe. When he opened the box, I was dying. I am serious, I was claustrophobic, I promise. It’s true,” Mourinho said.

In the end, Mourinho’s covert pep talk paid off, at least for that round. Chelsea won the first leg 4-2 at Stamford Bridge and edged Bayern Munich 6-5 on aggregate.

But their European adventure ended at the semi-final stage with that infamous ‘ghost goal’ by Liverpool’s Luis Garcia.

GAFTA donates GH₵100,000 to National Film Authority’s development fund

0

The Ghana Academy of Film and Television Arts (GAFTA) has donated GH₵100,000 to the National Film Authority (NFA) to support cinema development and infrastructure, in a move hailed as a major step in revitalising Ghana’s film sector.

The symbolic presentation took place at the NFA Conference Hall, where GAFTA executives handed over the cheque to NFA leadership. The amount represents usage fees received from Breakwater Studios, based in California, for archival footage used in a documentary about Ghanaian cinematography pioneer Rev. Chris Hesse.

Dr Fara Awindor, President of GAFTA, described the donation as the beginning of “an important chapter in the growth and development of our young but promising National Film Authority”.

He noted that the NFA’s sustainability requires continuous support from both within and beyond the creative industry.

Dr Awindor also highlighted GAFTA’s long-standing commitment to digitising Ghana’s film archives, particularly those kept outside the country. He referenced the decades-long advocacy by Rev. Chris Hesse to secure government backing for the preservation of Ghana’s celluloid materials housed at Iron Mountain, a storage facility in the United Kingdom.

“Protecting and digitising Ghana’s film heritage, especially the valuable materials housed abroad, is not just a technical exercise. It is a national imperative,” he said, adding that well-preserved archives serve as tools for education, research, and national pride, and could also be financially beneficial to the industry.

The GH₵100,000 is earmarked for the NFA’s Film Development Fund to support cinema initiatives and infrastructure development.

Receiving the donation on behalf of the NFA, Mr Kofi Adinkra, Head of Business Development and Marketing, expressed gratitude.

“You are the source of this home. You contributed immensely to creating what we have here, and we are happy to receive you,” he said. “This meeting is very special. I don’t think I’ve seen such heavyweights coming together like this since the authority was conceptualised, and I truly appreciate it.”

Also present at the event were Jamila Arthur, Legal Counsel at the NFA, and Georgina Aziedoime, the Authority’s Accountant.

Mr George Bosompim, GAFTA’s Public Relations Officer, explained that the idea for the donation emerged from earlier discussions between the two institutions. He noted that beyond the financial support, GAFTA also hopes to help rehabilitate the historic Rex Cinema, which was the first cinema acquired by Ghana’s first president, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah.

“We are happy to be back here to tell you that we’ve come to honour what we told you,” he said.

The GAFTA delegation included veteran filmmakers, board members and industry pioneers who have played key roles in shaping Ghana’s creative sector over the years. Their presence signalled a renewed commitment not only to preserving Ghana’s film history but also to shaping its future.

The donation marks a milestone in local reinvestment, with funds sourced from international interest in Ghanaian archival material now channelling back into national development.

“This is one of the many ways GAFTA is helping to unlock new opportunities for Ghanaian cinema. Let us continue to build structures that honour our past, support our present, and define our future,” said Dr Awindor.

As the cheque was handed over and cameras captured the moment, it was evident: Ghana’s film industry is moving forward with unity, vision and purpose.

NPP Delegates Conference Sparks Controversy Over Alleged Bias Toward Bawumia

0

Kennedy Agyapong

The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) July 19 Delegates Conference at the University of Ghana Stadium has ignited internal strife, with Kennedy Agyapong’s campaign team accusing organizers of orchestrating preferential treatment for former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

In a sharply worded statement, campaign spokesperson Kwasi Kwarteng alleged that Bawumia was granted exclusive access to the stadium’s inner perimeter to interact with delegates a privilege denied to other flagbearer hopefuls. “This engineered optics creates a skewed impression of massive support,” Kwarteng asserted, arguing that genuine grassroots sentiment was reflected outside the venue, where rivals like Agyapong engaged delegates under equal conditions.

The Agyapong camp framed the incident as a repeat of missteps that contributed to the NPP’s 2024 election loss, warning against “stage-managed spectacles” and urging delegates to prioritize “real change” over “leadership-imposed narratives.” The statement concluded with a pointed jab: “If we haven’t learnt any lessons, maybe we need a class at the Patriotic Institute.”

While Bawumia’s visible reception dominated coverage, the backlash underscores a fiercely contested flagbearer race ahead of the 2026 primaries. Analysts suggest the NPP faces a critical test in balancing internal unity with democratic fairness as it rebuilds for the 2028 elections.

COP Yohuno Approves Foreign Medical Care For Ailing Officers

0

THE INSPECTOR General of Police, Commissioner of Police (COP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has announced major reforms in the healthcare of police officers, stating that critically ailing officers whose conditions require special care will be granted access to receive treatment abroad when need be.

Speaking at the Regional Commanders Conference at the Police Headquarters, Accra, COP Yohuno indicated that leaders of the service have implemented measures geared towards upholding the welfare, particularly the health, of officers who render their services to enhance the nation’s security. Therefore, arrangements have been made for personnel in each of their ranks to access specialised care abroad if the need arises to save an officer.

“In the area of health, arrangements have been made for personnel with critical conditions to access specialised care, including treatment abroad when necessary,” he stated.

COP Yohuno further added that with the support of President John Dramani Mahama, the leadership of the Police Service is engaging a top kidney specialist in the UK, “where advanced procedures enable donors to be discharged on the same day, demonstrating the high standard of care we aim to provide for our dedicated men and women in uniform.”

He assured that the reforms he made were not merely administrative decisions, saying, “They show our deepest concern for the well-being of those who serve. The well-being of our personnel remains a top priority. We are investing in initiatives that aim to boost morale and create a supportive environment where officers can thrive.”

“Encouraging personnel to take holiday leaves, improving access to healthcare, and expanding housing schemes are all part of this effort,” he added.

On the matters of evolving criminal trends, COP Yohuno said the service has significantly upgraded its intelligence systems and expanded its operational capabilities. He added that technological reforms are being implemented, with “digitised administrative processes and a revamped criminal data management system making our work more efficient and transparent.”

“We have enhanced our rapid response capacity and operationalised more Public Safety Centres, enabling quicker responses to incidents nationwide. A recent example is AMBER Alert Ghana, which partnered with Meta,” he indicated.

COP Yohuno said these efforts are supported by strong inter-agency cooperation, particularly with the Ghana Armed Forces, the Immigration Service, and the Narcotics Control Commission, which reinforces the collective nature of the national security mission.

“Our international collaborations have equally gained momentum; we continue to work closely with bodies such as INTERPOL and the West African Police Chiefs Committee, enabling us to address cross-border crime more effectively. “Through these partnerships, our officers are benefitting from advanced training in areas such as cybercrime, terrorism, and transnational organised crime,” he added.

Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, on his part, announced that President John Mahama has earmarked a retooling fund of GH¢1 billion for the security services.

He stated that the fund will go into modern equipment, vehicles, technology, accommodation, and capacity building.

“The Ghana Police Service will receive a significant portion of this fund. It is our collective duty to ensure that these resources are used efficiently and transparently to improve national security outcomes,” he added.

Ghana’s music industry not attractive to investors

0

Soraya Opare-Riley is an event planner Soraya Opare-Riley is an event planner

Event planner and industry professional, Soraya Opare-Riley, has stated that Ghana’s music industry is not attractive enough to draw in investors.

According to her, the industry is still in its early stages, and anyone who chooses to invest in it feels like they’re taking a big risk.

Speaking on GhanaWeb’s X Space on July 18, 2025, Soraya shared her views on why investors shy away from putting money into the music business in Ghana.

She explained that the negativity often pushed by the media and bloggers, is so much that it scares off potential investors.

She explained that aside from the fact that the industry is still growing, the public perception and commentary around artistes and those who support them often create problems.

Soraya gave an example of how damaging rumours can be for both an investor and an artiste.

“As it stands now, the music industry is not attractive to invest in. It is not attractive to invest in because we are at the early stages and the early stages, anybody would make investing in sector risky. One of the things that would deter somebody from taking a risk is that a big man who is coming to invest would sit down and some press house or some blogger will now come and say ‘Because so and so invested in Sefa, edey chop am.’ That negativity would deter an investor,” she said.

She added that even when the investor manages to make a profit, bad publicity might still damage their reputation and affect their willingness to keep investing.

“The negative misinformation of the music industry is something that would deter anybody. Even if you do make a profit, you would make a profit but you are getting a bad press, why would you want to continue?” she asked.

Soraya also pointed to the rise of social media as a factor that fuels these challenges. According to her, once something is posted online, it spreads and shapes how people in other countries see Ghana’s music scene.

“It has exacerbated because of social media, where people sit down and just write anything…When you put something on social media, that becomes your story to anybody in India, China or anywhere around the globe. When they read about it. That is what they see, that is what they hear, so they don’t see the positive side of the Ghanaian music industry,” she explained.

UNDP Ghana holds 5th Nimdie Series for MSMEs with a focus on innovation for competitive growth

0

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Ghana hosted the fifth edition of the Nimdie Series, bringing together entrepreneurs and thought leaders to explore how Ghanaian Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) can stay competitive through innovation.

Held virtually under the theme “Product and Service Innovation: Staying Ahead in a Competitive Market”, the session featured insights from Ekow Mensah, a seasoned social entrepreneur, and Ronald Tagoe, founder of customer engagement platform MNotify.

Since being launched in 2024, the Nimdie Series has become an important knowledge-sharing platform that addresses the root challenges faced by MSMEs. It offers a mix of thought leadership, case studies, and real-world examples to help businesses scale with purpose.

In the latest edition, social entrepreneur Ekow Mensah, introduced a framework for demand-driven business growth, while digital entrepreneur Ronald Tagoe shared how his company, MNotify, evolved from a campus bulk SMS service to a full customer engagement platform using AI-powered chatbots. These stories offered practical inspiration for MSMEs looking to innovate in product design, customer service, and business models.

Beyond knowledge sharing, the Nimdie Series also serves as a springboard for deeper partnerships and policy discussions, positioning MSMEs to take advantage of opportunities under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and beyond.

Dr. Edward Ampratwum, Head of Inclusive Growth and Accountable Governance Cluster at UNDP Ghana underscored the importance of the Nimdie Series and emphasized the critical role of innovation in strengthening Ghanaian MSMEs.

“With over 90% of businesses in Ghana fall within the MSME space, Innovation, whether through new products, improved services, or more efficient delivery models, is no longer optional. In today’s highly competitive environment, it is a necessity for survival and growth. Many MSMEs do not make it past their third year, and a key reason is the lack of innovation. That’s why discussions like today’s are vital, especially as we prepare our MSMEs to tap into larger markets such as the AfCFTA”, Dr. Ampratwum added.

As the series continues throughout the year, future sessions will tackle other critical areas such as digitalization, finance, and market access—ensuring that MSMEs across Ghana are supported with the insights and partnerships they need to succeed.

2019 VGMA: ‘Take Charterhouse to court or shut up’

Nana Frimpong Ziega (pictured) says Stonebwoy should either take Charterhouse to court or shut up Nana Frimpong Ziega (pictured) says Stonebwoy should either take Charterhouse to court or shut up

Ghanaian entertainment personality, Nana Frimpong Ziega, has reacted to an earlier statement made by dancehall act, Stonebwoy about the unannounced 2019 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMAs) Artiste of the Year category.

Stonebowy, in an interview with Joy Prime on July 17, 2025, noted that he believes he won the award, even though the Artiste of the Year (AOTY) category was not officially announced.

Reacting to Stonebwoy’s claim, Nana Frimpong Ziega has stated that the dancehall musician should either take Charterhouse to court or stop making such pronouncements in the media.

Nana Frimpong Ziega stressed that if Stonebwoy cannot sue the organisers of the VGMAs, he should allow history to write itself.

“Anybody can take it to court, including Stonebwoy. He is a stakeholder, and if he can’t take the case to court, he should keep quiet and allow history to tell the story. He should stop lamenting,” he said.

Nana Frimpong Zeiga further noted that Stonebwoy’s constant complaint about the 2019 Artiste of the Year category smacks of a panic reaction from promising artistes in the Ghana music industry.

“I think Stonebwoy is saying all these because he is experiencing a panic attack; because he sees himself as the biggest artiste in the country. He is afraid that people like Black Sherif will take over from him in the coming years. So, he is always doing something for people to know he won it,” he added.

Fight that escalated during 2019 VGMAs:

In 2019, a feud erupted between two Ghanaian dancehall musicians, Stonebwoy and Shatta Wale, after the former was crowned the Reggae Dancehall Artiste of the Year.

The confusion started when Shatta Wale and his militants rushed onto the stage when Stonebwoy was about to receive his award.

Afraid of what could happen, Stonebwoy quickly pulled out a gun, which resulted in a sudden halt of the event.

The Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, has officially inaugurated a new Grant Committee under the Ghana Economic Transformation Project (GETP), aimed at boosting private sector growth by providing targeted support to micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

Speaking at a brief ceremony in Accra, the sector minister expressed appreciation to the World Bank for its financial support and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to developing sectors of the economy that are not reliant on natural resources.

She explained that the main goal of the GETP is to encourage private investment and business expansion in areas beyond Ghana’s traditional resource-based industries.

“The project is designed to increase productivity and investment in these sectors, driving sustainable growth,” she said.

The trade minister noted that many MSMEs are still struggling to recover from the impact of COVID-19, making it essential to provide well-structured financial support to help them become more competitive and resilient.

Under the Enterprise Growth component of the GETP, several grant programmes have been rolled out to support different groups of entrepreneurs.

The newly formed Grant Committee will be responsible for overseeing the fair and efficient distribution of these grants, ensuring they achieve tangible results for the targeted businesses.

Although the GETP began in 2021 and is expected to conclude in November 2025, grant disbursements under the Enterprise Growth Programme, which launched in 2023, are still ongoing.

Chairman of the Committee, Stephen Kwaku Bonnah, assured the Minister of the Committee’s full commitment to fulfilling its responsibilities.

Ghana dominated the opening period, with Doris Boaduwaa and Chantelle Hlorkah both coming close to opening the scoring against stubborn Algerian resistance.

Goalkeeper Cynthia Konlan emerged as Ghana’s hero, producing two crucial penalty saves to send her team through to the semi-finals.

By Benjamin Asomah

Berekum, (Bono), July 21, GNA – Elder Simon Ampaabeng Kyeremeh, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Berekum East in the Bono Region, has launched a charity foundation to provide alternative livelihood and empowerment support to drug addicts in the Berekum Municipality.

In an interview with the media on the side-lines of the launch held in Berekum, Elder said the foundation would also intensify public education on the dangers of substance abuse and illicit drug peddling in the municipality.

He said it would collaborate with health professionals, relevant state institutions as well as stakeholders to help stem the growing trend of drug abuse and peddling among the youth in the area.

Elder Kyeremeh said the foundation alone could not succeed in ending drug abuse and addiction and called for support from the corporate world, religious bodies and development partners to achieve desirable outcomes.

Mr David Owusu Ansah, the Berekum East Municipal Director of Education, lauded the establishment of the foundation and pledged the directorate support in its activities.

Aggrieved Menzgold clients seek mid-year budget allocation

0

The Coalition of Aggrieved Menzgold Customers has appealed to the government to factor debts owed to its members by the now-defunct Menzgold Company Limited into the upcoming mid-year budget review.

Finance Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, is expected to present the 2025 Mid-Year Budget Statement to Parliament on Thursday, July 24.

The review will highlight Ghana’s economic and fiscal performance over the first half of the year and provide updates on the implementation of the 2025 budget.

Speaking to the media on Monday, July 21, the Convenor of the Coalition, Fred Forson, acknowledged that while government has taken steps to address their concerns and has laid out a roadmap, affected customers want clear financial provisions made in the budget to bring lasting resolution to their plight.

“…I am told he is going to Parliament next week. We want to use this medium to plead that over 200 people have died and lives have deteriorated, so we plead on him to find a place in the mid-year budget and make some provisions for Menzgold customers,” Forson said.

The Coalition insists that without concrete budgetary allocations, the suffering of thousands of affected customers will persist, despite previous government assurances.

“They Chased Him with Sniffing Dogs” – NPP MP Alleges Intimidation During Ernest Kumi’s Swearing-In

0

The Member of Parliament for Oforikrom, Michael Aidoo, has claimed that late Akwatia MP, Ernest Yaw Kumi, was subjected to intimidation during his swearing-in on January 7, 2025 as reported by Ghana Web.

According to Aidoo, heavy security was deployed around the parliamentary complex, with police and military operatives using sniffer dogs in an attempt to locate and prevent Kumi from entering the chamber.

The measures were allegedly taken due to ongoing legal challenges regarding Kumi’s election victory.

Speaking in an interview on July 18, 2025, the Oforikrom MP said the situation appeared designed to frustrate the newly elected lawmaker.

“They used the dogs to search cars and all corners of Parliament to see if Ernest Kumi was hiding somewhere, just to stop him from being sworn in,” Aidoo alleged.

Despite the tense atmosphere, Kumi managed to gain entry into the chamber and took the oath of office. Aidoo described this as nothing short of a “miracle,” given the intense efforts to block his participation.

Kumi’s short tenure in Parliament was marked by controversy. After being declared the winner of the Akwatia seat with over 2,000 votes, his legitimacy was challenged in court.

Though he was eventually sworn in, he continued to face legal battles, including a contempt charge that was only overturned weeks before his passing.

Ernest Kumi died on July 7, 2025, after a brief illness. His death has reignited discussions around the challenges he faced, both politically and personally, during his time in office.

Minister Criticises Celebrities’ Unauthorised Police Escorts

0

Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak

Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has expressed his displeasure over the increasing use of unauthorised police protection services by some celebrities in the country.

Speaking at the Regional Commanders Conference at the Police Headquarters, Accra, the Interior Minister indicated that the unfortunate situation, which is not peculiar to only celebrities but business people and political actors, is disturbing, to say the least.

He said police protection is a privilege governed by law and policy, not a commodity for private gain.

“In my speech at the last Regional Commanders Conference, I drew your attention that some police personnel offer unauthorised protection services to celebrities, business people, and political actors. Let me remind you all: Police protection is a privilege governed by law and policy, not a commodity for private gain.”

The minister warned that sanctions and penalties will be imposed for individuals found abusing the services’ protection, saying, “Henceforth, any officer found engaging in such activities without proper approval will face strict disciplinary action. The Police Service must not only be incorruptible but must be seen to be incorruptible. I urge the IGP to audit all current VIP protection arrangements and ensure full compliance with regulations.”

This uproar from the Interior Minister comes exactly a month ago, when actress Salma Mumin caused a stir on social media when she shared a video of her using police protection to visit her favourite rave spot on a rainy day on Wednesday, June 4, 2025.

Salma took to her Snapchat account to share with her fans a glimpse of her morning routine as she headed out to get some water to start her day.

Driving in her white Range Rover, the star actress showed her point of view as she drove in the lane separating cars moving in separate directions while a police officer on motorbike led and cleared the way for her to drive through.

Prioritise party unity over Bawumia’s projection – Smith Buttey urges NPP members

0

Acting Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Danquah Smith Buttey, has appealed to party members to prioritise unity and focus on the broader interests of the party rather than dwell on what he described as the “undue projection” of former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia during the recent National Delegates Conference.

Speaking in an interview, Mr Buttey, who also serves as the First Vice Chairperson of the NPP, expressed concern over the way Dr Bawumia was prominently featured at the event, noting that it risked creating an impression of favouritism in the party’s ongoing presidential race.

“We urge party members who are aspiring to be presidential candidates: if what he [Dr Bawumia] did was not pleasant, we sincerely plead with them to forgive,” he said in Twi.

“We are serving the party, not individuals, and everything we do must be in the interest of unity. If anyone feels unhappy about the incident and believes it was done on the instructions of the party, let me be clear: he acted on his own.”

Mr Buttey clarified that neither the party nor its executives sanctioned the display, stressing that it should not be allowed to cause divisions.

“He has already done it, and as a party that seeks unity, this is not the time to assign blame or say his actions caused this or that. What is wrong is wrong, but the party and its executives did not instruct him to do it. Now that it has happened, and since he is one of us, and has already apologised, we are asking everyone to forgive and let it go.”

He called for reconciliation and forward movement, urging all factions within the party to work together.

“We plead with everyone—what he did wasn’t right, but I appeal to them to forgive him, and let’s focus on moving the party forward,” Mr Buttey emphasised.

His comments come amid simmering tensions within the NPP as the contest for the party’s 2028 flagbearer position gathers momentum.
