KOKA says Iddrisu’s advice to Dumelo was misinterpreted KOKA says Iddrisu’s advice to Dumelo was misinterpreted

Entertainment critic and NPP communications team member, Kwaku Osei Korankye Asiedu, popularly known as KOKA, has weighed in on the recent controversy between John Dumelo and MP of Tolon, Habib Iddrisu.

Iddrisu came under fire from some industry personalities and netizens on social media after he advised the Deputy Minister of Agriculture-designate, John Dumelo, during his vetting to focus on his role as he was “no longer in the movie industry” and that he should be “as serious as he can.”

However, speaking in an interview with Max TV on February 28, 2025, KOKA defended Iddrisu’s comments, stating that the MP did not say anything wrong.

According to him, Iddrisu’s advice to Dumelo was misinterpreted.

According to KOKA, Iddrisu’s remarks were meant to guide Dumelo in his new role, emphasizing the need for humility, seriousness, and focus.

“Iddrisu did not say anything wrong. Real life is like drama on its own. The MP was simply advising Dumelo to take his new role seriously, work closely with his boss, and avoid letting his star personality overshadow his boss unintentionally,” KOKA explained.

He further clarified that Iddrisu’s intention was to caution Dumelo against treating his new responsibilities like a movie role, urging him to approach the position with dedication and professionalism.

“He was telling Dumelo to be humble, apply seriousness, and focus on assisting his boss. He shouldn’t take it as a movie because, in real life, everything requires commitment,” KOKA added.

KOKA also criticised those who lambasted the MP, suggesting that they may not have fully understood the context of his statement.

“It seems those attacking the MP were not mature enough to grasp what he said. I didn’t see anything wrong with his statement,” he stated.

Meanwhile, various creative arts personalities, including George Quaye, Nana Poku Ashis, Kwame Dadzie, D-Black, and the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, among others, have lambasted Iddrisu for his statement and demanded an apology.

Citizens are part of the problem – OSP condemns support for corrupt officials

0

Kisi Agyebeng is the Special Prosecutor of Ghana Kisi Agyebeng is the Special Prosecutor of Ghana

Kissi Agyebeng, the Special Prosecutor of Ghana, in a scathing rebuke, has denounced citizens who enable and support corrupt officials, saying they are complicit in perpetuating the problem.

Since taking office in 2021, the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has come under scrutiny for its alleged inaction on high-profile scandals, causing public outrage.

Despite that, Agyebeng, speaking at the 5th Annual Constitution Day Public Lecture on Friday, February 28, 2025, revealed that citizens distrust anti-corruption institutions, believing they are influenced by politics and ineffective in holding elites accountable.

“Citizens view anti-corruption law enforcement institutions as largely hindered by political marginalization and thus part of the problem. This is because citizens perceive a high incidence of impunity amongst the elites, as they should, and that corruption investigations would ultimately amount to nothing and yield no consequences,” he said.

He further disclosed that although citizens correctly condemn corruption among officials, they also contribute to the problem by supporting or participating in corrupt activities themselves.

“I do not blame them. Further, citizens view those in authority as the problem and are quick to condemn corruption attendant upon official acts, as they should. Yet citizens play a significant role in the problem through acts of open support for official corruption and sometimes participation in the same,” he added.

In 2021, former president Akufo-Addo officially swore into office Kissi Agyebeng as the Special Prosecutor. The 47-year-old lawyer took over from Martin Amidu, who resigned from office in November 2020.

Consumers prepared to spend more on environmentally friendly phones

Fast-changing consumer attitudes towards repair and reuse of mobile phones are driving a rapidly growing market for ‘circular’ devices and services which could exceed $150bn by 2027, according to a new report published by GSMA.

The GSMA’s ‘Rethinking Mobile Phones: the Business Case for Circularity’ report which surveyed more than 10,000 mobile phone users across 26 countries worldwide, showed that evolving consumer attitudes, regulatory changes and the growing impacts of e-waste are converging to challenge the traditional linear business model of the mobile phone industry.

The report said more than 70 per cent of consumers surveyed globally stated that they would be prepared to spend more on environmentally friendly phones.

It highlighted the growing opportunity for the mobile industry to embrace circularity, not simply for positive environmental reasons, but also commercial benefits.

Within the report, a survey of 31 operators from around the world highlighted how they were embracing circular business models.

About 90 per cent of operators surveyed already operated at least one circular business model, with refurbishment and e-waste management being the most popular.

However, respondents recognised huge potential in scaling up further; 80% with refurb programmes thought ‘a lot more’ could be done.

It said this could include developing leasing, renewal and upgrade propositions which would tap into new revenue streams, increase customer loyalty, and provide quality assurance.

Mr Steven Moore, Head of Climate Action, GSMA, said fast-growing consumer demand for green and refurbished phones, as well as repair services, was a fantastic business opportunity for the mobile industry.

He said unlocking this requires strong collaboration across the value chain, helped by enabling policies and incentives from governments, bringing together manufacturers, mobile operators, refurbishers, repairers, and recyclers to address key barriers to unlock new revenue streams and future-proof business models.

He said sales of new mobiles had slowed in recent years, with consumers holding on to devices for a year longer than a decade ago, and many turning into a rapidly growing market for used and refurbished phones.

This shift reflects growing consumer interest in refurbished phones to save money, get a higher-end device, and minimise environmental impacts.

About 85 per cent of consumers globally consider sustainability to be important when purchasing a device, exceeding other criteria such as device aesthetics (73 per cent) and AI capabilities (67 per cent).

One in six phones sold in France last year was refurbished, while over half of Indian consumers surveyed were likely to consider refurbished for their next phone purchase.

Two-thirds of consumers surveyed globally reported needing to have their current or previous phone repaired.

Neymar reveals how his penalty kick technique helped Messi win the World Cup

0

Messi converting a spot kick during the 2022 World Cup Messi converting a spot kick during the 2022 World Cup

Neymar Jr. has made a stunning claim, crediting his penalty kick technique as the secret behind Lionel Messi’s triumph in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

After successive failures and narrowly missing out on the coveted trophy in 2014, when Argentina lost the final in extra time to Germany, Messi finally had his moment in 2022. The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner guided Argentina to their third World Cup, winning the overall best player of the tournament.

Argentina’s route to the World Cup saw them awarded five penalty kicks, with spot-kicks against Saudi Arabia and Poland in the group stages, and then three more in the knockout phase against the Netherlands, Croatia, and France.

Messi converted all but one, missing against Poland as Wojciech Szczesny made a fine save to deny him. Messi’s five penalties at Qatar 2022 were the most by any player in any single edition of the World Cup.

However, Neymar, in an interview with Podpah, disclosed how Messi, using his technique, bore fruit for him at the World Cup.

“We were practicing penalties, and he was like, ‘How can you hit it like that?’ I looked at him and said, ‘Are you crazy? You’re Messi. If I can hit it like that, you can too. You train, master it.’ Then he started laughing and said, ‘I’ll try too,’ then he started,” he said.

Despite that miss against Poland, Neymar revealed that the reason behind the miss was because Messi ditched the technique he taught him.

“In the World Cup, for example, he scored several penalty goals like that. The only one he didn’t hit while looking at the goalkeeper, he missed,” he added.

Zimbabwe journalist detained for interviewing official critical of Mnangagwa

0

Zimbabwe President and Zanu PF leader Emmerson Mnangagwa Zimbabwe President and Zanu PF leader Emmerson Mnangagwa

A prominent Zimbabwean journalist is facing charges of inciting violence after he interviewed a senior ruling party official who demanded that President Emmerson Mnangagwa not extend his term in office.

Blessed Mhlanga, who works for online-based television station Heart and South, was on Tuesday remanded in custody following his arrest the previous day on charges that have alarmed government critics.

Harare Chief Magistrate Farai Gwatima said he will rule on the journalist’s application for bail on Thursday after prosecutors opposed his release pending trial, claiming that he was a flight risk.

Prosecutors said Mr Mhlanga incited violence through his interviews with ruling Zanu-PF central committee member Blessed Geza on January 27 and February 11 where the official condemned President Mnangagwa’s rumoured plans to hang on to power beyond 2028 when his term ends.

A Zanu-PF faction has been pushing for the amendment of Zimbabwe’s constitution to allow the 82-year-old ruler to remain in power until 2030.

Mr Geza and other former fighters in Zimbabwe’s 1970s liberation war have been vocal in their opposition to the controversial plan.

They accuse President Mnangagwa of failing to live up to expectations after his rise to power seven years ago through a coup that toppled longtime ruler Robert Mugabe.

Police are also seeking the war veterans’ leader, who they say has gone into hiding, and is wanted for inciting violence.

Chris Mhike, Mr Mhlanga’s lawyer, said the charges were trumped up and were an attack on press freedom in Zimbabwe.

“What happened to press freedom in this country? I am pained that I am standing in court defending a journalist’s right to freedom of expression,” Mr Mhike told the magistrate.

“The last point is that the accused did not do this once but twice, yes he didn’t do it twice but many times. It’s his job.

“Whether you agree with what (Mr) Geza said, the public is entitled to hear it. It’s not my client who put these statements to the public.

“I pray that the court makes a finding that the state has failed to find compelling reasons to detain my client.”

Amnesty International called for Mr Mhlanga’s release and the unconditional dropping of all charges against the journalist.

“Authorities must not misuse the justice system to silence journalists and clampdown on freedom of the media,” the international rights group said in a statement.

“Freedom of the media is important in advancing human rights. Responsible reporting on the issues that shape people’s lives is a key building block of any free society.

“Journalism is not a crime, and media practitioners should be able to carry out their work without fear of reprisals.”

The Zimbabwe National Editors Forum said it was alarmed by the journalist’s arrest, which it said was harassment of media workers doing their work “in the public interest.”

President Mnangagwa’s government often deals with critics ruthlessly with several opposition and politicians enduring several months behind bars without trial only to be acquitted by the courts.

Zimbabwe is ranked 116th out of 180 countries in the Reporters Without Borders’ 2024 World Press Freedom Index.

The Zimbabwean ruler is accused of failing to keep his promise to turn the Southern African country into a “new kind of democracy” when he took over from Mr Mugabe after the 2017 coup.

It’s Already Underway – Hassan Tampuli Mocks Mahama’s Hajj Village Sod-Cutting

0

According to GhanaWeb, former Deputy Minister of Transport and current Member of Parliament for Gushegu, Hassan Tampuli, has criticized President John Dramani Mahama’s announcement to inaugurate the new Hajj Village, suggesting it is an attempt to take credit for a project that was already launched by the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) government.

Tampuli highlighted the ongoing construction at the site, sharing photos that demonstrate significant progress, which raises questions about the need for Mahama’s ceremonial sod-cutting.

In a Facebook update, he expressed doubts about the event’s purpose, clarifying that the project began in 2024 under the leadership of former Transport Minister Kweku Asiamah, in partnership with the Ghana Airport Company and the Hajj Board.

The MP noted the irony of the situation, pointing out that the initiative has been in motion since the previous year and questioned the timing of the ceremony.

This discussion was sparked by a social media poster announcing the sod-cutting event, which has led to widespread skepticism regarding its necessity.

The new Hajj Village, situated behind the existing facility and near Action Chapel on Spintex Road, started development in 2024.

The Hajj Task Force’s announcement has resulted in a flurry of reactions online, with many users familiar with the project expressing that it is already sufficiently advanced, negating the need for a new ceremonial beginning.

The secret to wearing red with confidence

0

Red is a colour that speaks volumes. It’s powerful, vibrant, undeniably bold and currently trending from runways to street-style fashionistas. Whether it’s a striking cherry dress or a subtle pair of heels, wearing red is all about confidence and intentional styling.

If you’ve been hesitant to embrace this eye-catching colour, here’s how you can make red work for you in the chicest way possible.

Start small

If you’re not ready to go all-in with red, start by incorporating small accents into your look. Think of a red lip, a crimson manicure, or a scarlet handbag. These touches add a pop of colour without overwhelming your outfit. A little red goes a long way in elevating a neutral ensemble.

Choose the right shade

Red comes in many shades—from deep burgundy to bright cherry. The key is to find a shade that complements your skin tone. Fair complexions often suit blue-based reds, while warmer undertones shine in orangey or coral reds. Try on a few shades to see which one feels most flattering and empowering.

Pair red with neutrals

To keep red looking chic and sophisticated, balance it with neutral tones like black, white, beige, or grey. A red blazer over a monochrome outfit or a red skirt paired with a crisp white blouse ensures the colour stands out in a refined way.

Style tip: Red paired with neutrals is super stylish, red paired with baby blue is what we’re seeing everywhere.

Keep the silhouette simple

When wearing bold red, it’s best to keep the silhouette clean and tailored. A red sheath dress, a structured blazer, or a well-fitted pair of trousers in this colour exudes elegance without feeling over the top. Avoid overly busy designs or too many frills, as they can detract from the impact of the colour itself.

Tone it down with texture

Textured fabrics like knits, suede, or tweed can soften the intensity of red, making it feel more wearable for everyday occasions. For instance, a red cashmere sweater paired with jeans can look effortlessly stylish without feeling overpowering.

Don’t forget about prints

If solid red feels too daring, try incorporating the colour through prints. Think red floral patterns, stripes, or plaid. A printed red dress or scarf can offer a subtler way to wear the hue while still making a statement.

Go monochrome

For the ultimate power move, try wearing red head-to-toe. A monochromatic red outfit—whether it’s a suit, dress, or matching separates—creates a bold, cohesive look. To break up the intensity, mix different textures or add subtle gold or silver accessories.

Balance your makeup

If you’re wearing red clothing, consider keeping your makeup minimal to avoid clashing. A natural base with a touch of mascara and a neutral lip allows the red to take centre stage. Alternatively, if you’re keeping your outfit neutral, a classic red lip can tie everything together beautifully.

Own it

The most important tip for wearing red is confidence. Red is a colour that demands attention, so wearing it requires a sense of self-assuredness. Stand tall, smile, and let the boldness of red reflect your inner strength.

Government will ensure academic freedom in tertiary institutions- Education Minister

0

By Kodjo Adams

Accra, Feb. 28, GNA – Mr Haruna Iddrisu, the Minister of Education, has expressed the government’s commitment to ensuring unfettered autonomy and academic freedom in tertiary institutions.

The move, the Minister stated, was necessary for tertiary education institutions to fulfil their respective mandates without interference.

This was in a statement read by Dr Emmanuel Newman, Director of Tertiary, Ministry of Education, on behalf of the Minister at the climax of the 75th anniversary of Accra Technical University (ATU).

It was on the theme: “75 Years of Impacting Society and Driving Innovation.”

He encouraged the University to come up with innovative ideas and adopt the best practices in teaching research for the socio-economic transformation of the nation.

He said the University was among the first universities to be elevated to technical universities with great transformation, including the expansion of academic programmes.

The University, the Minister stated, had invested in cutting-edge technology, fostering an emerging culture of innovation in the institution.

He charged the University to produce competitive professionals, who are equipped to meet the current needs of the nation.

Mr Iddrisu urged the University to put in place measures to deepen the relationship between the institution and industry to foster the development of the relevant workforce for the country.

He pledged the government’s support to provide the needed resources for the development of the country’s educational institutions.

“The government will also continue to work with relevant stakeholders to expand infrastructure in tertiary education institutions,” he said.

He urged the alumni of the institution to sponsor the development of one building to accommodate about 500 students and be named the Alumni Hostel.

King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, the Ga Mantse, commended the University for its profound impact on the nation, saying the anniversary was a testament to decades of commitment, diligence, and visionary leadership.

King Tsuru II said the University stood the test to become a beacon of innovation, practical knowledge, and vocational excellence.

University’s achievement in its ranking and Sustainable Development Goal awards, he said were indications of its exemplary achievements as a hub of academic excellence, shaping minds, developing skills, and advancing technical and vocational landscape.

He said the Ga state valued education as a cornerstone of progress by championing educational empowerment.

“Education uplifts communities, preserves our heritage, builds resilient societies, and our commitment to fostering strong partnerships with leading institutions like the Accra Technical University.”

He called for collaboration between academia and industry, ensuring that graduates possessed skills that match contemporary industrial needs, to boost socio-economic growth.

Professor Amevi Acakpovi, the Acting Vice-Chancellor of ATU, said the University’s success had been transformative, from 15 students to over 29,000 currently.

The University has expanded academic programmes to meet technological development and remained a centre of excellence in practical knowledge.

The University, as part of its anniversary activities, organised debates with other sister technical Universities, donations to prison inmates, lectures on innovation and ecosystem, and clean-up exercises, among others.

President John Dramani Mahama is Ghana's president President John Dramani Mahama is Ghana’s president

President John Dramani Mahama has announced that the government will airlift 5,000 Ghanaian pilgrims to Mecca for the 2025 Hajj.

Speaking at the sod-cutting ceremony for the Hajj Village on Friday, February 28, 2025, he emphasised the government’s commitment to ensuring a smooth pilgrimage process.

“After we pay off the millions of dollars of debts that have accumulated in Saudi Arabia from earlier Hajj operations, this year, we intend to airlift exactly 5,000 pilgrims to the Holy Land. And the taskforce has announced March 13, 2025, as the deadline for payment,” he stated.

President Mahama further disclosed that the government had secured a pre-financing arrangement with a local bank, ensuring that all deposits for accommodation, transportation, and other essential facilities were fully covered.

“We have facilitated a pre-finance arrangement with one of the local banks. And so, I’m pleased as I speak to you to announce that all deposits for accommodation, transport, and other facilities have been paid,” he said.

He also directed the Hajj Task Force to strictly adhere to the set limit of 5,000 pilgrims.

“I’ve instructed the Hajj Task Force that they should cut off at exactly 5,000 and not go beyond 5,000. We don’t want the previous situation where people rush with late payments and we are unable to airlift them and become complaining,” he stated.

The hidden obstacle to Ghana’s tourism growth

0

File photo of some tourist sites in Ghana File photo of some tourist sites in Ghana

In simple words, reciprocity means “tit for tat”, or “I will treat you the way you treat me”.In official language, reciprocity means: permitting the application of the legal effects of specific relationships in law when these same effects are accepted equally by foreign countries.

Others will explain it as the right to equality and mutual respect between states

So far, for the official and simplified explanation. Now let’s see what the differences and realities are and what the effects of reciprocity are to position Ghana as a tourist destination.

A Ghanaian traveling to the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, the European Union and other – mostly developed countries – has to fulfill the following requirements:

I. Fill, complete and sign a visa form and show proof of payment, have a valid passport, submit a passport picture.

II. Have a travel insurance, submit proof of accommodation, submit a travel itinerary, show a round-trip ticket, submit proof of financial means, show supportive documents related to the purpose of stay and evidence of intention to return.

III. Provide an original copy of a birth certificate, previous passports, evidence of social ties, marriage certificate, salary slips, employment letter stating terms and monthly income, tax clearance certificates, proof of active business and any other document that the officer of the country we wish to visit deems necessary for your applications.

Equal application of rules:Because of reciprocity, the Government of Ghana applies almost the same rules for every visitor/tourist from developed countries who want to visit Ghana. Because we Ghana and Ghanaians deserve to be respected or treated the same way as the embassies of developed countries treat us.

Based upon equal treatment human rights, I think what Ghana demands: to be treated with equal respect (and I mean treated with respect 100%) but let’s look at the daily reality.

How many tourists or visitors from the earlier mentioned countries are overstaying, moving, or at least trying to move illegally to Ghana? How many Ghanaians have overstayed their visas and/or disappeared completely in the countries they visited?

Many developed European countries have been overflowed by asylum and greener pastures seekers illegally crossing land borders but many others have been hiding under the disguise of being tourists.

The story is not different in the USA and Canada. I recently read that the number of overstaying and disappearing Ghanaians in the USA has risen above the number of Nigerians overstaying their visas. That puts the visa abuse of Ghanaians at a level more than six times higher than the most populous African country Nigeria.

Should we be surprise that developed countries treat Ghanaian visitors as “suspects” who will try to establish themselves in their country?Let’s get to the effects of reciprocity on the Ghanaian tourism industry.

Tourists are going on holidays for relaxation and want to avoid problems and stress. The Western or modern tourists are getting more and more interested in visiting new countries around the world because they are looking for new, safe and affordable and adventures destinations and Ghana could profit from this trend.

In my opinion, Africa always has a magical sound to Europeans looking for adventure. But actually they are looking for safe and hassle free adventure (is that even adventurous?).South Africa, Zimbabwe, Mauritius, Namibia, Rwanda, Kenya, Zanzibar, Tanzania and many other countries either allow visa free, visa on arrival or E-visa for tourists of most developed countries and forget about reciprocity in the interest of their tourism sector.

But not Ghana, with the exception of one month last year, we allow specific groups of tourists to travel to Ghana and obtain visas on arrival.

I started writing this article on the day our new government and President are settling down in office, and I pray that Ghana will drop its pride concerning reciprocity and will allow every tourist visa free entrance to Ghana, just like we did for travelers holding an African passport.

I am sure this simple step will have a larger effect on the development of Ghana as a tourist destination than many successful and less successful efforts of our Ghana Tourism Authority to promote tourism in Ghana.

But who am I, Just a Concerned Ghanaian; Nico van Stallone Nico is a graduate of the Hotel School of Amsterdam with majors in tourism, service and marketing with over 40 years experience in Tourism and Hospitality sector in the Netherlands, Ghana, Germany, France and South Africa, where he operated hotels, lodges restaurants and guesthouses.

Odoley Sowah calls for allowances for assembly members

0

Rita Naa Odoley Sowah, the Deputy Minister Designate for Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs, has reiterated the need for assembly members to receive allowances to support their work.

During her vetting before the Parliamentary Appointments Committee on Friday, February 28, 2025, she underscored the vital role assembly members play in local governance and emphasized the importance of equipping them with the necessary resources to fulfill their responsibilities effectively.

Sowah’s remarks follow President John Dramani Mahama’s State of the Nation Address (SONA) on Thursday, February 27, 2025, in which he announced plans to introduce allowances for assembly members.

Describing the initiative as a step in the right direction, Sowah stressed that assembly members undertake significant duties that often go unrecognized. She called for urgent action to ensure they receive the necessary financial support to enhance service delivery at the local level.

“The president during the SONA yesterday mentioned allowances for assembly members and I believe it is in the right direction,” she stated.

Sowah underscored the critical role assembly members play in local governance, particularly in addressing community needs and driving development at the grassroots level.

She noted that while assembly members are often the first point of contact for community issues, they frequently lack the financial support necessary to carry out their duties effectively.

“When you come to assemblies, some of them are salaried workers. When you go into some communities, the workers there are enormous, even the assembly members. So, they need these resources to support them in their work.

“In as much as the unit committee members are the first point of call, a journey of a thousand miles, they say, begins with a step. So, as we have started with giving the assembly members allowances, I believe that the unit committee workers will follow,” she stated.

Ghana’s debt servicing to hit GH¢280 billion in next four years – Mahama

0

President John Dramani Mahama is Ghana's president President John Dramani Mahama is Ghana’s president

President John Dramani Mahama has painted a gloomy picture of the current state of Ghana’s economic situation.

According to him, in the next four years, Ghana’s debt servicing will amount to GH¢280 billion, and this comprises GH¢150 billion for domestic debt and GH¢130 billion in external debt servicing.

Delivering the State of the Nation Address (SoNA) on the floor of Parliament in Accra on Thursday, February 27, 2025, President Mahama said, “Mr. Speaker, our financial sector continues to struggle despite the reportedly spending of GH¢29.9 billion on the financial sector cleanup exercise to date by the previous administration.

What is troubling is that in the next four years our debt servicing will amount to GH¢280 billion, and this comprises 150 billion for domestic debt and 130 billion in external debt servicing.”

President Mahama also touched on the severe financial challenges facing Ghana’s energy sector.

He revealed that the financing shortfall for the energy sector has risen significantly to approximately $2.2 billion or GH¢34 billion for the year 2025.

The energy sector, according to him, faces serious financial challenges primarily due to collection and system losses, non-compliance with the cash waterfall mechanism, and legacy debts.

Why is it so difficult for men to take care of us?

0

Ghanaian actress, Vicky Zugah Ghanaian actress, Vicky Zugah

Ghanaian actress, Vicky Zugah, has expressed concerns over how some men are demanding more from women without reciprocating the same efforts.

In a post shared on social media on Instagram on February 28, 2025, Vicky Zugah said the current generation of men prefer to equally split bills with women, however, they are not willing to assist with house chores.

“The men you sent to take care of us are now calling us gold diggers. They want responsibilities shared while demanding more than they give. They want to do 50/50 with us… How did we get here? Why is it so difficult for this generation of men to freely and effortlessly take care of us?

“Most men want wives who can submit to them as head of the house and still pay 50 percent, work the same hours as them, and expect us to come and cook and take care of the kids. The chores are not entirely my problem; my problem is the splitting of bills. If I am too busy, I can hire a maid. When you all are busily demanding submission, know that it comes with being a man: protecting and providing,” she stated.

She further called on men to provide for women and avoid the ideology of splitting bills.

“I am not disputing the fact that there are a few generous men out there. When next you meet at the table of men, kindly advise your men for us,” she added.

‘Leave Mahama alone, the economy was wickedly and criminally managed’

Award-winning investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni Award-winning investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni

Award-winning investigative journalist, Manasseh Azure Awuni, has taken to social media to defend President John Dramani Mahama following criticisms by proponents of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) after his State of the Nation Address (SONA) on Thursday, February 27, 2025.

Manasseh asserted that statements made by President Mahama on the state of the economy he inherited from the NPP government led by former President Nana Addo Dankwa are nothing but the truth.

“Leave Mahama alone. That the economy was wickedly and criminally managed is a fact,” he wrote in a post shared on X on Friday, February 28, 2025.

The journalist, in another post, stated that the NPP lost the 2024 Election because of their bad management of the economy.

He added that even a Member of Parliament of the NPP and a former Deputy Minister of Finance of the Akufo-Addo government admitted the economy was managed badly.

“You lost the debate on the economy when Dr. Bawumia sought refuge in digitalisation, instead of the economy he’s noted for.

“Journalists should remind the NPP that Kwaku Kwarteng, a deputy finance minister in Akufo-Addo’s first term, said in 2024 that the economy was being managed like a ‘ponzi scheme.’ President Mahama is charitable in describing the mess the NPP left behind,” he wrote.

What President Mahama said about Saglemi Housing project in 2025 SONA

0

President John Dramani Mahama has acknowledged Ghana’s challenges in the housing sector, emphasising the current housing deficit of 1.8 million units.

According to him, the high costs of building materials, land, and other factors have contributed to the rise of slums in various communities.

Delivering his first State of the Nation Address on February 27, 2025, he pledged his administration’s commitment to providing affordable housing options for Ghanaians.

He also noted that one of his first steps would be to ensure the completion of the Saglemi Housing Project.

He said, “Mr. Speaker, the quality of life in any nation relies significantly on a well-regulated and efficient housing market that guarantees access to decent homes.”

“The housing deficit, estimated at 1.8 million units, has loomed large over us for years. High costs associated with land, construction materials, and financing have made homeownership unattainable for many, primarily affecting vulnerable populations and contributing to the rise of slums.”

The president stated that the Saglemi Housing Project would be just the beginning, as his government aims to implement additional affordable housing schemes for Ghanaians.

“My government is steadfast in its commitment to completing all ongoing housing initiatives, beginning with the Saglemi Affordable Housing Project. We will also implement a low-cost Social Housing Project supported by a District Housing Scheme. This project aims to remove the financial barriers to homeownership,” he added.

He also noted that workers in the formal sector, whether public or private, who have 15 to 20 years before retirement, would be able to purchase and own a house in cedis, with the cost deducted monthly from their salaries until fully paid.

The Accra High Court has ordered Accra Hearts of Oak to pay an amount of GH¢108,637 to their former Commercial Affairs Manager, Charles Kwarteng, over wrongful dismissal.

According to ghanasoccernet, the presiding judge, Anna Akosua Appiah Gottfried Anaafi Gyasi, ruled that the contract between Hearts of Oak and Kwarteng was valid before termination.

Although the Phobians argued against the claim, they did not provide enough evidence to substantiate their claims.

Upon investigation, the court discovered that Hearts of Oak withheld Kwarteng’s salary in August 2021, did not pay his Tier 2 pension contributions for 24 months, and did not pay fuel allowances for 17 months.

In the court’s ruling, the presiding judge stated that Kwarteng had a valid case and deserved compensation for using his private vehicle for official work.

The judge’s orders include:

Payment of salary arrears: GH¢10,987 and full salary for August 2021

Payment of fuel allowance: GH¢24,650 for 17 months

Compensation for Private Vehicle Use: GH¢50,000

Payment of Tier 2 pension contributions: Full contributions for 24 months

Legal costs: GH¢20,000 to be paid to the plaintiff

G20 finance meeting ends without consensus or communique

0

Governor of the SA Reserve Bank, Lesetja Kganyago, and South African Finance Minister Godongwana Governor of the SA Reserve Bank, Lesetja Kganyago, and South African Finance Minister Godongwana

South Africa voiced dismay on Thursday that Group of 20 talks it hosted on global economic issues ended without consensus, after top officials from several countries skipped it and delegates remained far apart on issues such as climate finance.

The two-day G20 meeting of finance ministers and central bankers in Cape Town failed to come up with a joint communique.

However a “chair’s summary” issued by the host said participants “reiterated the commitment to resisting protectionism.

The summary added they had “supported a rules-based, non-discriminatory, fair, open, inclusive, equitable, sustainable and transparent multilateral trading system,” using several words the Trump administration has already strongly objected to.

South Africa had hoped to make the G20 a platform for putting pressure on rich countries to do more to tackle climate change, to give more towards poorer countries’ transitions to green energy and to reform a financial system that favours investment banks at the expense of poor sovereign debtors.

But the talks were overshadowed by the absence of several key finance chiefs – such as from the United States, China, India and Japan – and foreign aid cuts by major economies like the United States and Britain, against a backdrop of rising geopolitical tensions.

South African Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana said he was “not happy” the G20 meeting could not issue a joint communique.

“I’m not going to (name) … any specific country, but climate issues are becoming a challenge for the first time,” he told Reuters after issuing the G20 summary.

“I think there is a view that we should prioritise other things than necessary climate financing.”

In an earlier news conference, he said that though there was a difference of opinion on the way forward on climate action: “there has been general agreement against protectionism and economic fragmentation.”

Bank of Japan Governor Kazuo Ueda told reporters after the meeting that “the broader G20 view was that if downside risks like geopolitical tension and supply chain disruptions materialize, that could hamper the G20 goal of achieving sustainable, balanced global growth.”

G20 countries account for 85 percent of global gross domestic product and 75 percent of international trade. The grouping was formed in response to the 1999 Asian financial crisis to improve cooperation in addressing shocks across national borders.

The chair’s summary has become a feature of multilateral meetings in which participants do not reach a formal consensus.

On the global economy, the summary noted that growth patterns varied across economies and said various risks and trends had been discussed.

“Inflation has receded, supported by well-calibrated monetary policies and the unwinding of supply shocks, although progress has varied across countries,” the summary said.

Police boost security at Christian Methodist School after students clashed with local youth

The Ghana Police Service has taken control of security at Christian Methodist School in New Aplaku, Weija, in the Greater Accra Region on Friday, February 28, following a violent clash between students and local youth over a stolen phone.

A heavy police presence remains at the school amid fears of reprisal attacks.

To ensure students’ safety, the police have evacuated them in batches using police vehicles. The operation aims to transport students safely while preventing further disturbances.

Two people, including a student, were reportedly injured during the clashes.

Meanwhile, the Headmaster is meeting with the Regional Education Director to discuss reinforcement measures.

ASP Godfred Bampoe, Officer at the Weija SCC Police Station, addressed the students, outlining the evacuation process.

NPP will someday come to power even if I’m dead and gone – Afenyo-Markin to Majority

0

Alexander Afenyo-Markin (L) is hopeful the NPP will recapture power in future Alexander Afenyo-Markin (L) is hopeful the NPP will recapture power in future

The Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, has stated that he is confidence that the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) will one day be elected into power by the electorates again.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Friday, February 28, 2025, Afenyo-Markin emphasised his certainty that his party will eventually become the Majority in Parliament, regardless of how long it takes for them to assume power as the government of the day.

According to him, there is no obstacle that can prevent such a day from coming to pass.

He added that even if he does not live long enough to witness the day the NPP is elected back into power, as long as the country continues to practice its democracy, that day will inevitably arrive.

“If today, you are of the view that in this debating chamber, they should call 7 Majority MPs and only 3 Minority MPs because you have the rule, I will not debate or let us break shoulders over this matter because I know that in as long as there is life, even if I am dead and gone and this democracy we have all established is in force, the NPP will someday come into power. Be it 100 years, the NPP will someday come,” he said.

Afenyo-Markin, also the Member of Parliament of Effutu, was responding to the Majority MPs’ demand for a larger number of their caucus members to be given the platform, while only a smaller number of Minority MPs should be granted the opportunity to speak during debates in the chamber.

This was after the Majority pushed for the time allotted for debates in the chamber to be proportional.

The lawmaker cautioned the Majority side about their actions, indicating that they are setting a dangerous precedence and that their behavior will eventually come back to haunt them.

“I would strongly urge upon the Majority Leader that some of these new precedents that they are introducing must be measured, because we are watching and taking notes. A day may come that references will be made,” he cautioned.

FDA Probes Unapproved Drugs Import Report

0

THE FOOD and Drugs Authority (FDA) has announced the initiation of an investigation into a recent report by BBC Africa Eye, which revealed that India’s Aveo Pharmaceuticals has been exporting unapproved drugs containing tapentadol and carisoprodol to West African countries, including Ghana.

The FDA has clarified that it has not registered tapentadol or carisoprodol as single-ingredient products, nor has it approved Tafradol, a fixed-dose combination of both substances, for any medical condition.

The Authority has assured the public that it is actively collaborating with key stakeholders to investigate the concerns raised in the BBC Africa Eye report, adding, “The FDA remains committed to protecting public health and ensuring the safety of all regulated products in Ghana.”

In response to these findings, the FDA has directed Samos Pharma to immediately cease using Westfin International Private Limited and Aveo Pharmaceuticals as exporters. Additionally, the Authority has suspended the processing of Masters Pharmaceutical Limited’s application that involves Aveo Pharmaceuticals as a contract manufacturer, effective immediately.

This action comes in light of the BBC Africa Eye findings regarding Aveo Pharmaceuticals’ involvement in the illegal manufacturing and distribution of opioid products.

BBC Report

An Indian pharmaceutical company is manufacturing unlicensed, highly addictive opioids and exporting them illegally to West Africa where they are driving a major public health crisis in countries including Ghana, Nigeria, and Cote d’Ivoire, a BBC Eye investigation has revealed.

Aveo Pharmaceuticals, based in Mumbai, makes a range of pills that go under different brand names and are packaged to look like legitimate medicines. But all contain the same harmful mix of ingredients: tapentadol, a powerful opioid, and carisoprodol, a muscle relaxant so addictive it’s banned in Europe.

This combination of drugs are not licensed for use anywhere in the world, and can cause breathing difficulties and seizures. An overdose can kill. Despite the risks, these opioids are popular as street drugs in many West African countries, because they are so cheap and widely available.

In response to the above claims, the Authority indicated that the FDA Centre for Import and Export Control (CIEC) has not received or processed an import permit application for Tafradol or similar brands, as such products are unauthorised for use in Ghana.

A statement, signed by the CEO, Mrs. Delese Mimi Darko, revealed that during the BBC investigation, the Food and Drugs Authority was contacted and categorically confirmed that the drugs in question are unapproved and illegal for importation.

“This exposé reinforces the Authority’s longstanding enforcement efforts against the illegal importation of unregistered drugs and substances of abuse, including Tramadol, Trafanol, Tarapamol, and Tramaking. Through rigorous surveillance, the FDA has imposed fines, seized illicit drugs, and ensured their safe disposal,” part of the statement read.

Meanwhile, upon its strict ongoing enforcement, recent operations, according to the Authority, have identified the continued presence of various Tramadol brands, including Trafanol, Tarapamol, and Tramaking, in Tamale and other parts of the country.

The Authority revealed that on December 18, 2023, a container (MRKU 9648934) declared for transit to Nemin, Niger, was found to contain 181 cartons of Royal 225mg (Tapentadol and Carisoprodol), 51 cartons of Timaking 120mg (Tapentadol and Carisoprodol), and 90 cartons of Tafradol 120mg, stating that, “these were seized and disposed of following a court order   dated January 16, 2025, with destruction completed on February 21, 2025.”

The FDA has also confiscated approximately 287,011 units of Tramadol in varying strengths from 50mg to 225mg, 8,576 units of Trafadol, and 2,053 units of Tramaking at different border posts, over-the-counter medicine sellers (OTCMS), and from hawkers. None of the confiscated products had manufacturer details indicated on them.

The Authority further added that in collaboration with state agencies, including the Ghana Revenue Authority (Customs Division), Narcotics Control Commission, National Intelligence Bureau, Port Health, Ghana Standards Authority, Ghana Police Service, National Security, Pharmacy Council, Local Government, Environmental Protection Agency, and the media, has conducted multiple safe disposals of confiscated Tramadol and other opioids. Perpetrators of these illegal activities face strict regulatory sanctions, including administrative fines and prosecution.

‘I can’t work over 12 hours and be expected to cook for my husband’

0

Ghanaian media personality, Abena Moet Ghanaian media personality, Abena Moet

Ghanaian media personality, Abena Moet, has established that she will not tolerate being the only one responsible for house chores in her marital home.

In a discussion on GHOne TV, which was shared online on February 28, 2025, Abena Moet emphasised that she would not work tirelessly day and night only to come home and be expected to cook.

She explained that most men hold the belief that house chores are solely the responsibility of the wife, which often leads to a lack of support for their partners when needed.

“I can’t go out there, work 12 or 15 hours, sit at a table of men, argue my point, or even close a business deal and make money, just to come back home to meet my husband on the couch watching TV, sitting, and waiting for me to cook just because you are the man. Nobody will do that.

“In every relationship, it’s a give and take. It’s either you are helping financially or physically. It is not easy to make money; you know how it is to make money. Imagine you wake up at 4 AM, go for a meeting from 5 AM to 12 PM… and come home to cook for you,” she bluntly stated in a video that has gone viral on X.

Abena Moet added that men should also serve their wives since that is a sign of true leadership.

“When you are sweating on set, we all try to help you out, and that doesn’t make me less. So, if I go to work and come back to see you in the chair doing nothing… Jesus Christ was the head, yet he washed the feet of his disciples. To be able to lead, you must learn to serve,” she added.

BoG Governor to appear before Parliament over $250 million cost of new BoG headquarters

0

Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr. Johnson Pandit Kwasi Asiama Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr. Johnson Pandit Kwasi Asiama

The Governor of Ghana’s Central Bank, Dr. Johnson Pandit Kwasi Asiama, is scheduled to appear before the Parliament of Ghana on Wednesday, March 5, 2025.

Announcing the Business Statement of Parliament for the week ending Friday, March 7, 2025, the Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga, stated that the governor would address the House regarding the cost of the new Bank of Ghana head office, constructed under the erstwhile Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo government.

“The governor’s invitation is scheduled for Wednesday and will take place at a committee of the whole. It has been provided for in the draft document that we have,” he said.

The new Bank of Ghana headquarters, dubbed “The Bank Square,” was commissioned on November 20, 2024, by President Akufo-Addo at a reported cost of approximately $250 million.

Construction began in 2019 under a contract initially awarded to Goldkey Properties Limited in 2020 for $81.8 million, with funding purportedly sourced from internally generated funds and government support.

However, the project’s cost escalated significantly over time, with revised figures rising to $121 million and eventually reaching approximately $250 million upon completion.

The 20-storey building, located in Accra’s Central Business District, spans 21,551 square meters and includes features such as a banking hall, a currency processing center, and extensive parking facilities.

Despite various justifications, the cost has sparked significant controversy, particularly given the country’s economic challenges, including a default on Eurobond debt in December 2022 and reliance on a $3 billion IMF bailout in 2023.

Critics, including the then-opposition National Democratic Congress, labeled it an extravagant misuse of public funds, questioning the bank’s transparency and financial priorities during a period of fiscal strain.

Dr. Ernest Addison, who oversaw the project as Governor of the Bank of Ghana, proceeded on terminal leave starting February 3, 2025, ahead of his retirement on March 28, 2025, after serving two full terms since his initial appointment in April 2017.

In his stead, President John Dramani Mahama swore in Dr. Johnson Pandit Kwasi Asiama as the new Governor of the Bank of Ghana, alongside Dr. Zakari Mumuni as the First Deputy Governor, on February 25, 2025.

Is Andre Ayew being forced to retire from Black Stars?

0

Black Stars skipper André Ayew Black Stars skipper André Ayew

The fate of Black Stars skipper André Ayew with the national team remains uncertain as he is set to miss yet another international assignment in March 2025, according to multiple reports.

The Le Havre forward has not featured for the Black Stars in over a year and has reportedly lost his captaincy and shirt number in the process.

His prolonged absence, coupled with a reported change in leadership within the team, has sparked speculation that he is being forced out of the national setup.

According to Joy Sports, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) will soon announce a new captaincy structure, with André Ayew omitted from the list.

His younger brother, Jordan Ayew, is set to be named the new captain, while Alexander Djiku will take the first deputy role after Thomas Partey, who previously served as vice-captain, declined to retain the position.

Regarding Ayew’s iconic number 10 shirt, it has seemingly been handed to Mohammed Kudus, who wore it during the 2025 AFCON qualifiers. Reports suggest that the West Ham United star will continue wearing it for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

In addition to losing his captaincy and shirt number, head coach Otto Addo has hinted that the former Olympique Marseille star is not in his plans.

“We are looking at the future and focusing on long-term development. That’s mainly why we invited younger players and left out André Ayew,” he explained after excluding the veteran in his latest squad selection.

Despite these developments, the 34-year-old has made it clear that he has no intention of retiring from international duty.

“I love what I’m doing, and I’m not ready to stop,” he told BBC in an interview.

André Ayew is currently in good form for Le Havre in the 2024/25 season, leading the club’s scoring charts with three goals.

The long-standing rivalry between Naana Brown and Diamond Appiah has taken a new turn, as Naana Brown has once again called out Diamond, labelling her an “audio billionaire”—a term used to describe people who claim to be wealthy but have no real assets.

In a viral video, Naana Brown boldly challenged Diamond Appiah to publicly prove ownership of any property including the cars in her possession.

According to her, Diamond has been bragging for years about her multiple businesses and luxury assets, yet there is no evidence to support these claims.

Naana Brown’s husband could also be heard in the background, backing her as she lambasted Diamond Appiah. This comes after both women have repeatedly compared their wealth, with each claiming to be more successful than the other.

Despite Diamond Appiah’s public claims of owning multiple businesses and real estate properties, Naana Brown insists that it is all for show, accusing her of creating a false impression of wealth.

As of now, Diamond Appiah has not responded to the latest accusations, but fans are eagerly waiting to see if she will rise to the challenge and prove Naana Brown wrong.

Gov’t recovers “Shelter Belt” from illegal miners

0

The government has successfully reclaimed Shelter Belt, the largest of nine forest reserves that had fallen under the control of illegal miners for almost a decade.

The operation was carried out with the assistance of security services, marking a significant step in the fight against illegal mining.

Addressing Parliament on Friday, February 28, Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, revealed that 44 out of Ghana’s 288 forest reserves are under severe threat from illegal mining activities.

He noted that nine of these reserves had been completely overrun due to illegal miners wielding sophisticated weapons, making it difficult for the Forest Commission to maintain control.

Speaking to Citi News, the Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to reclaiming lost forest reserves and restoring polluted water bodies.

“We talked about the 44 forest reserves that have been destroyed, but we won’t stop there. We will ensure the forests are recovered through afforestation under the ‘Tree for Life’ initiative. I am proud to say that, with the help of the security forces and housing sector, we have recovered the largest forestry reserve. We are taking things one step at a time and will work towards turning our waters blue again.”

He further disclosed plans to restructure the licensing system for mining, eliminating unclear classifications such as small-scale and medium-scale mining.

“We are going with policies to restructure how we give licences. There is nothing called small-scale, or medium-scale mining, we are going to restructure licensing and decentralized licensing,” he added.

Akufo-Addo’s government left GH¢450 million debt at foreign ministry

Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Minister of Foreign Affairs Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Minister of Foreign Affairs

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has claimed that the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo government left a debt of over GH¢450 million at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Speaking in an interview on JoyNews, on February 28, 2025, the minister explained that the GH¢450 million debt is mostly from access fee arrears the country owes to multinational organisations it belongs to, like the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the African Union (AU), and the United Nations (UN).

He made these remarks while bemoaning the amount of debt accumulated by the previous government, stating that some of the debt at his ministry is from arrears on payment of ongoing projects.

“The debt situation is really frightening… the foreign ministry was not left out. I have also met colossal arrears of about GH¢453 million – largely our access contributions to international organizations we belong to and a number of projects started that have not been paid for,” he said.

Ablakwa, who is also the Member of Parliament of North Tongu, said that because of the level of debts left by the Akufo-Addo government, President John Dramani Mahama has directed that the expenditures for Ministries, Departments, and Agencies be drastically cut.

He said that his ministry, for instance, has had to suspend a lot of ongoing projects and would also not be engaging in a number of activities, including the purchase of new cars.

“In preparing the 2025 budget, we had to suspend a lot of projects. What my departments wanted was about GH¢3.3 billion when we had our first management meeting, but we had to slash it; looking at the arrears situation, we took out about a billion Ghana cedis.

“We suspended all fiscal infrastructure in terms of the passport application centres we’re supposed to construct this year so that we can clear the arrears. The president instructed us that we need to cut expenditures. So, we’ve cut expenditures drastically… No new vehicles for ministers, for chief directors, whether saloon or V8s. We are cutting down on even the travel expenditure. No first-class travels,” he added.

NEWS IN: Asante Kotoko lodge complaint at CID to invite Prof. E.K Wallace of Asempa FM

0

The Management of Asante Kotoko led by Nana Apinkra has officially lodged complaint at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to invite Asempa FM’s journalist Enoch Kwesi Worlanyo Wallace following his comment over the death of staunch supporter Nana Pooley, according to Accra-based Mothers FM.

The complaint for the invitation is linked to his comment about the death of Nana Pooley.

The well-known sports presenter claimed on Thursday night that the fan was stabbed at a location described as ‘ghetto’ outside the stadium before being transported to the venue, where he was later pronounced dead.

His assertion affirms an earlier submission by the GFA chairperson on the Safety and Security, DCOP Lydia Donkor that the fan died outside the stadium.

“Per my investigations, Pooley went to a popular hood, also known as ghetto for boys conversation at Nsoatre. In the course of the discussion, there was a dispute unrelated to football. In the heat of the moment, tempers flared and Brimah allegedly stabbed Pooley. A tricycle owner called Sunsum was taking him to the hospital. On their way, Pooley saw an ambulance at the Stadium and decided to stop to receive medical attention,” Wallace narrated

“Unfortunately, due to excessive bleeding, he shortly collapsed and died. Following the police arrest, Sunsum reported himself to the police to narrate what actually happened. And so the police and some club officials are aware, hence the silence on the case recently. It is part of the reason Kotoko agreed to return to the Ghana Premier League.”

This shocking revelation that he was moved after the attack adds to the uncertainty, potentially complicating the investigation into what exactly transpired and who may have been involved.

Reacting to his comment, the management of the record holders of the Ghana Premier League has directed the CID to invite him to assist Police investigation.

Pooley lost his life after being stabbed in Nsoatre during Kotoko’s Ghana Premier League matchday 19 fixture against Nsoatreman.

His passing prompted the suspension of the league and sparked discussions about security at match venues.

However, Pooley’s funeral has been scheduled for March 6, following a one-week observation held at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi.

Ghana tackling 2025 crimes with 1972 Laws, expert says as he warns of imminent danger

0

Ghana is sitting on a ticking time bomb as it continues to confront modern crimes in 2025 with outdated laws from as far as 1972.

Security experts are sounding an alarm about the critical need for legal reforms to address evolving crime patterns, particularly in relation to small arms and light weapons.

Speaking at the WANSA-Ghana evening encounter on the theme “Enhancing Advocacy and Lobby Capacity for Reforms in Small Arms and Light Weapons in Ghana”, the Managing Director of the International Action Network on Small Arms (IANSA), Johnson Asante-Twum, highlighted the country’s failure to update its legal framework to keep pace with advancements in crime and technology.

According to him, the inability to revise these laws is exposing Ghana to significant security risks, making it increasingly difficult for law enforcement agencies to effectively combat crime.

He pointed out that while criminals are becoming more sophisticated, the nation’s outdated regulations remain largely ineffective in addressing emerging threats.

One of the most alarming issues raised by Asante-Twum is the absence of a legal limit on the number of firearms an individual can own.

He expressed concerns that, if left unchecked, this loophole could allow individuals to build personal armories, potentially fuelling crime, armed violence, and insecurity.

“The laws currently in place do not specify the maximum number of weapons an individual can own. This means a single person could legally acquire and stockpile a large number of firearms without any restrictions. In a country where we are already struggling with illegal arms proliferation, this is extremely dangerous,” he warned.

Asante-Twum further stressed the urgent need to review existing gun laws and introduce stricter regulations on firearm ownership.

He called for measures to prevent the unauthorised stockpiling of weapons, which could lead to increased criminal activities and pose a serious threat to national security.

Beyond security concerns, the expert also highlighted the economic burden that poor regulation of arms ownership places on the country.

He explained that the lack of control and proper monitoring mechanisms is resulting in huge financial losses for the state, particularly in dealing with the consequences of gun-related crimes.

Additionally, he lamented the absence of competency training facilities for firearm owners. According to him, many people who legally own weapons lack the necessary training to handle them safely, thereby increasing the risk of accidental shootings and improper use.

“The government must prioritise the establishment of training facilities for individuals who possess firearms. Without proper training, gun owners may inadvertently cause harm to themselves or others,” he said.

Asante-Twum urged the government to take immediate action to reform Ghana’s laws on arms control. He called for a review of the 1972 legislation to align it with modern realities, ensuring that law enforcement agencies have the legal backing required to effectively combat crime.

The expert emphasised the need for increased advocacy and lobbying efforts to push for legislative changes.

He urged civil society organisations, policymakers, and security agencies to work together to draft new laws that address the current security challenges.

As Ghana grapples with rising crime rates and the proliferation of illegal weapons, stakeholders in the security sector are calling for a comprehensive approach to arms control.

This includes updating existing laws, strengthening enforcement mechanisms, and investing in modern crime-fighting technologies.

Security analysts argue that without urgent reforms, the country risks becoming a haven for arms trafficking, organised crime, and armed violence.

They are urging the government to treat security reforms as a national priority to safeguard the safety and well-being of its citizens.

With crime continually evolving, the question remains: How long can Ghana continue to tackle modern threats with outdated laws before the situation spirals out of control?

Ghana, Nigeria, others excluded in US visa waiver 2025 programme

0

In a recent and highly anticipated policy review, the United States Department of State has announced the 2025 visa waiver programme update, which has significant ramifications for global travelers.

The United States removed Ghana and other African countries from the list of eligible countries for the 2025 Visa Waiver Programme (VWP), a visa-free travel initiative.

Among the most affected are African professionals from Nigeria, South Africa, and Ghana, as these nations are not included in the new list of waiver-eligible countries.

Impact of the U.S. Visa Waiver Program

The visa waiver program (VWP) is designed to allow citizens from designated countries to enter the United States for up to 90 days without obtaining a visa. Instead, eligible travelers can apply for an Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) online before departure.

This waiver simplifies entry procedures and reduces processing times for short-term business, tourism, or transit travel.

However, under the updated 2025 waiver, key African nations such as Nigeria, South Africa, and Ghana are notably excluded from the list of 40 waiver-eligible countries. For African professionals seeking to work in the United States, this update means that the streamlined waiver option is not available, and instead, they must undergo the more rigorous traditional visa application process.

The Waiver Update: What Changed in the 2025 Program?

Enhanced Security and Diplomatic Considerations:

The 2025 waiver update has introduced significant changes focused on enhancing national security and reinforcing diplomatic ties. The US authorities have revised the list of eligible countries, now including a total of 40 nations.

Notably, Romania has been added as a new entrant, while Taiwan and the United Kingdom remain eligible only under specific conditions. This strategic move reflects the US commitment to granting the waiver only to countries with robust border security and strong diplomatic relations.

Implications of the Waiver Exclusion for African Professionals

The exclusion of Nigeria, South Africa, and Ghana from the waiver list means that professionals from these countries are required to go through the standard visa application process.

This process involves several steps, including detailed documentation, an in-person consular interview, and thorough background and security checks.

Although more time-consuming, the traditional process is designed to assess the applicant’s credentials comprehensively, ensuring that only qualified professionals gain entry into the United States.

Current dumsor wreaking havoc for businesses, come clear on it

0

Nhyiaeso MP, Stephen Amoah Nhyiaeso MP, Stephen Amoah

The Minority in Parliament has called on President John Dramani Mahama to provide a clear explanation for the resurgence of the erratic power supply, popularly known as “dumsor,” which has been affecting businesses and livelihoods.

This appeal was made by Stephen Amoah, the Member of Parliament of Nhyiaeso, during a press briefing following President Mahama’s first State of the Nation Address (SONA) since assuming office on January 7, 2025.

Referencing former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s final address before leaving office, Mr. Amoah pointed out that the previous administration had successfully tackled the energy crisis.

“In his last State of the Nation Address, the former President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo stated, and rightly so, ‘it is worth emphasizing that I inherited a nation plagued by dumsor, but I am very happy to say that I leave office in 2025 with the lights on.’ Sadly, after January 7, 2025, the government of President Mahama has failed to keep the lights on,” he stated.

The Nhyiaeso MP also dismissed the government’s justification that the power crisis is a result of the maintenance program on the West African Gas Pipeline, questioning why such challenges did not disrupt the power supply under the previous administration.

“Several excuses have been given for the current excruciating dumsor – the latest being the current maintenance programme of the West African Gas Pipeline. We do not know whether, under the NPP government, the Gas Pipeline was going through similar maintenance. If so, why were the lights on, but cannot be on today because of the maintenance of the Pipeline?” he queried.

Mr. Amoah further emphasized the severe impact of the power outages on businesses, particularly small-scale enterprises such as dressmakers, ice water sellers, and hair salons, which rely heavily on a stable electricity supply.

He urged President Mahama to provide a concrete and transparent explanation for the crisis and to take immediate steps to resolve it.

“President Mahama needs to come clear on the real reasons for the current dumsor, which has created uncomfortable situations for businesses,” he asserted.

He was the star of our national team for many years

Asamoah Gyan celebrates with Kwesi Appiah after scoring a goal Asamoah Gyan celebrates with Kwesi Appiah after scoring a goal

Former striker of the Black Stars, Kwesi Appiah has lavished praises on former Black Stars teammate, Asamoah Gyan, labelling him as Ghana’s undisputed star for many glorious years.

Appiah played alongside Gyan in his first tournament for the Black Stars at the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations in Equatorial Guinea, when Ghana won silver.

In an interview with Flashscore, the Boreham Wood striker disclosed how he honored Gyan even before getting to play alongside him and acknowledging the impact he had on the team.

“Gyan was always someone I admired from afar and I followed his career, as he was the star of our national team for many years. So, to eventually play alongside him and partner him up front was a moment I will cherish forever. He’s a true legend and a great human being,” he revealed.

Since Gyan’s retirement in 2019, the Black Stars have been struggling to fill the void he left, and Appiah, having shared a dressing room with the legend, believes Gyan’s talent makes it tough to replace him.

He, however, hoped the Black Sars eventually get a player of Gyan’s quality.

“It’s a very tough task to replace someone of his calibre and quality. That type of striker and character is not produced that often.”

“At this moment in time, you have a player like Kudus and potentially Semenyo who are playing really good for their clubs so we’d hope they can eventually have that type of level and consistency for Ghana to help lead the team to glory as Asamoah Gyan so often did,” he further stated.

At 34, Appiah plays for Boreham Wood in the England National League and has already scored 23 goals in 15 National League games this season.

How Do You Expect Me To Come Back Home After Working For 12-15 Hours To Cook For You Just Because You Are My Husband? – Abena Moet Sparks Debate

0

Popular Ghanaian media personality Abena Moet has ignited a heated debate after questioning traditional gender roles in marriage.

Speaking as a panellist during a discussion on the roles of men and women in relationships on GhOne TV she challenged the expectation that wives must always cook and clean, regardless of their workload.

According to Abena Moet, marriage is a partnership where both individuals contribute in different ways. She acknowledged that while one partner may bring in financial stability, the other is expected to nurture the home. However, she argued that when both partners work long hours, there must be a compromise.

“How do you expect me to come back home after working for 12-15 hours to cook for you just because you are my husband? You will be home early but choose to sit on the couch watching TV while waiting for me to come and cook for you. Why? “ she questioned.

She further suggested practical solutions for couples juggling careers and household responsibilities. Instead of placing the burden on one person, she believes that couples should consider ordering food or hiring domestic help to lighten the workload.

Her statement has since sparked mixed reactions on social media. Some people have wondered if that is how she treats her husband at home especially as a career woman.
