Nana Agradaa Clashes With Journalist At Amasaman High Court

0

Televangelist and controversial public figure Nana Agradaa, also known as Patricia Asiedua Asiamah, was involved in a heated confrontation with journalist Mike 2 of Adom FM during her court appearance on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, at the Amasaman High Court.

Nana Agradaa, who is currently serving a 15-year prison sentence for fraud and “charlatanic advertisement,” appeared in court seeking bail pending the appeal of her conviction. However, the court session took an unexpected turn when she allegedly attempted to have journalist Mike 2 removed from the courtroom.

What Happened?

According to Mike 2, upon entering the courtroom to cover the proceedings, he was approached by a police officer who ordered him to surrender his phone and leave the courtroom. Mike 2 protested, explaining that he was an accredited journalist and had not used his phone during the session.

He further revealed that he witnessed Nana Agradaa signaling to her lawyer, after which her legal team allegedly engaged court officials and a police officer. Shortly afterward, he was informed that he needed to exit the courtroom because “she didn’t want me there.”

Mike 2, however, refused to comply without clarification. He reported the incident to the court registrar, who later confirmed that no one had the right to prevent a duly accredited journalist from observing the proceedings. Eventually, he was allowed to re-enter the courtroom.

Court Outcome

Despite the altercation, the legal process continued. At the end of the hearing, the High Court denied Nana Agradaa’s bail request. The judge ordered the lower court to upload all case documents to facilitate the next phase of her appeal process. Nana Agradaa was then escorted back to Nsawam Prison, where she is currently serving her sentence.

Public Reactions

The incident sparked mixed reactions across social media and in public discourse. Some praised Mike 2 for standing his ground and defending press freedom, while others criticized Nana Agradaa for allegedly attempting to manipulate the courtroom environment to control media coverage.

The event has renewed conversations about the rights of journalists in Ghana, especially during high-profile legal cases involving celebrities and public figures.

Why This Matters

This confrontation highlights the ongoing tension between media professionals and individuals involved in sensitive legal battles. It also raises questions about media access to public court proceedings, the treatment of journalists, and the role of the press in ensuring transparency in judicial matters.

As Nana Agradaa continues to serve her sentence, the public remains eager to follow her legal journey and the wider implications for Ghana’s legal and media landscape.

Angola’s National Oil, Gas & Biofuels Agency President to Outline Angola’s $60B Investment Strategy

0

Paulino Jerónimo, President of Angola’s National Oil, Gas & Biofuels Agency (ANPG), will share insights into the country’s upcoming investment opportunities at the Angola Oil & Gas (AOG) conference – taking place September 3-4 in Luanda. As the country’s upstream regulator, the ANPG has been making considerable strides towards opening-up the market to foreign investment, with recent reforms and block opportunities set to drive the next wave of oil and gas production in Angola. Jerónimo’s insights at the event will not only provide a comprehensive overview of Angola’s block opportunities, but support new investments across the upstream sector.

Angola is experiencing a surge in upstream oil and gas investments, with $60 billion planned across the market for the next five years. These investments have been made possible with the country’s ambitious licensing strategy, as well as ongoing regulatory reforms and flexible investment structures spearheaded by the ANPG. As the country prepares to launch its next licensing round and promotes acreage on offer through direct negotiation, Angola is affirming its position as a prime investment destination for oil and gas companies.

As sub-Saharan Africa’s second largest oil producer, Angola implemented an aggressive strategy in 2019, whereby the country seeks to award 50 concessions by 2025. To date, more than 30 new concessions have been awarded over four licensing rounds. The country is expected to launch its next licensing round in 2025, offering ten blocks for exploration in the offshore Kwanza and Benguela basins. This next round follows a successful tender launched in 2023 and concluded in 2024, whereby nine companies qualified as operators and five qualified as non-operators. Since this round, the ANPG has received proposals from three international companies for nine blocks in the onshore Kwanza basin. Proposals were submitted for blocks that were not awarded during the 2023 tender.

In addition to licensing rounds, Angola offers flexible investment structures that continue to entice new players to the market. In recent years, Angola launched a permanent offer scheme, enabling companies to invest outside of the confines of traditional licensing rounds. Currently, 11 blocks are available on permanent offer. In 2024, the country went a step further, introducing five marginal fields for development. Situated in producing blocks with proven systems, these marginal fields are well-suited for smaller players seeking near-term production.

Meanwhile, Angola is also expanding and modernizing its library of seismic data under efforts to support future exploration campaigns. Currently, the country’s basins are support by a wealth of 2D and 3D seismic data, with recent acquisition campaigns aimed at improving the understanding of on- and offshore acreage. The ANPG has been spearheading efforts to reprocess existing seismic data, seeking to improve geological updates. In early 2025, energy data and analysis company TGS completed the reprocessing of the Block 16 GeoStreamer MC3D seismic dataset in the Lower Congo basin. This follows an announcement made by TGS at AOG 2024, with the company set to reprocess its onshore Kwanza basin dataset. These efforts provide detailed insights into the subsurface, thereby mitigating investment risks and improving decision-making.

At AOG 2025, Jerónimo is expected to outline Angola’s strategy to increase production through new exploration campaigns. By exploring the country’s opportunities – from offshore blocks to onshore drilling to partnerships and seismic acquisitions – Jerónimo will offer operators the insights they need to invest in Angola.

We traded a flat screen for a black and white box – Sammi Awuku mocks NDC over dumsor levy

MP for Akuapem North, Sammi Awuku MP for Akuapem North, Sammi Awuku

Former National Lottery Authority (NLA) boss and leading NPP figure, Sammi Awuku, has taken to Facebook to express outrage over what he describes as a crushing wave of taxes and utility price hikes under the current Mahama-led NDC administration.

Reacting to the implementation of the new fuel tax, officially known as the Energy Sector Levy (Amendment) Act, 2025 — or the “Dumsor Levy” — Awuku minced no words.

“A day of reckoning is here,” he declared. “In May 2025, electricity tariffs went up by 14.75% and water by 4.02%. Today, July 16, we’ve been slapped with another 2.45% hike in electricity. That’s a total of 17.2% in less than three months.”

Comparing this to the previous NPP government, Awuku noted that “all of 2024 saw less than an 11% increase and even had a 6.65% reduction for lifeline users in the first quarter.”

He was even more scathing about the newly rolled-out fuel levy. “As if that’s not enough, here comes the D-Levy.

“Call it the Death Levy, Demolition Levy, Dumsor Levy or just plain Disrespect — it fits,” he wrote, expressing clear disapproval of the GHC1 tax per litre of fuel now imposed on all Ghanaians.

Drawing a comparison with the controversial E-Levy introduced under the previous administration, Awuku pointed out that the D-Levy is far more punishing.

“E-Levy was a 1% tax charged only on mobile money transactions exceeding GH¢100. The Dumsor Levy or D-Levy is a new tax imposed, charging GHC1 on every litre of fuel you buy,” he explained.

“Unlike the E-Levy which spared you if your transaction was under 100 cedis, this one hits you even if you’re just buying 12 cedis worth of fuel. It’s like saying ‘thank you for suffering, here’s more.’”

Awuku went further to highlight recent increases in fuel prices, revealing that “petrol went up by 2% and diesel by 5% from July 2, thanks to COMAC’s projections.”

In a sharp jab at the government’s cost-cutting narrative, he quipped: “If government is serious about cutting down fuel allocations, maybe they should start by closing their private pump at the presidency.”

He also questioned the ever-expanding list of government appointees, saying, “Let’s be clear — who exactly is a government appointee? Because the list keeps growing like a family WhatsApp group.”

Ending on a sarcastic but somber note, Awuku wrote, “We really traded our flat screen TV for a black and white box. What a time. Good morning, Ghanafo).”

Hawa Koomson’s assault is nothing special

Member of Parliament for Pusiga, Laadi Ayii Ayamba Member of Parliament for Pusiga, Laadi Ayii Ayamba

Member of Parliament for Pusiga, Laadi Ayii Ayamba says the brutal violent attack the former Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, Mavis Hawa Koomson suffered was nothing special.

According to her, numerous cases of political violence have occurred in the past where political activists including a sitting member of parliament were physically assaulted during a by-election.

She, therefore, queried how the assault the former MP suffered during the Ablekuma North Parliamentary elections re-run has suddenly gained currency on the lips of the minority.

Madam Laadi Ayii Ayamba stated this on the floor of parliament on Wednesday July 16, 2025, while reacting to a statement laid on the floor by the minority leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin.

In his statement, the Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin indicated that the brutal attack on Hawa Koomson was not just political misconduct but a well calculated military style operation that target political opponents.

He, therefore, called on the house as well as Civil Society Organisations to roundly condemn such acts of politically coordinated violence and intimidations in our body politic.

The minority leader’s statement generated huge controversy as members from the majority side reacted to his statement with defiance positions.

Member of Parliament for Pusiga, Laadi Ayii Ayamba who first reacted to the statement from the majority side indicated that the call by the minority leader smacked of hypocrisy.

This, she said, was due to the fact that the same minority leader and his side maintained loud silence when they were in the majority position and a lot of such acts happened.

Though she condemned the violence, she was quick to add, “Mr Speaker, this is the first time in my fourth year in parliament that after numerous electoral violence that have occurred in this country, this [has been made] a special one.

“Mr Speaker, I would have stayed out mentioning my sister’s name, Hawa Koomson but once her name is on the statement and it has been mentioned, I will do that”

“Hawa Koomson knows it so well that apart from the atrocities that have ever occurred in her own constituency where lives were lost, she knows it very well that if she went to that election and came out without any problem, it will have been coming from her own attitude”. She added.

According to the Pusiga MP, she was shocked when she learned that the former MP used “pepper spray and I saw her even spraying it”

She continued that she was a victim of politically motivated vigilante attacks at Atiwa where she said, she ran back to Accra to save her dear life.

“Mr Speaker, are we saying that this is the first time we have had such a problem? This is not the first time I was a victim at Atiwa by-election.

“This is not the first time, but I have never heard a word being authored. Mr Speaker, Techiman South, what did we not see, what lives have we not lost? We lost lives”. She stressed.

She alleged that even though precious lives were lost in the aforesaid constituency during the 2020 elections, no investigations were made to bring the perpetrators to book.

Former Member of Parliament for the Awutu-Senya East constituency in the central region, Mavis Hawa Koomson suffered her worst attack in her entire political life on the 11th of July at Ablekuma North.

She was kicked and stamped many times by individuals alleged to be members of the ruling government’s party, the National Democratic Congress.

‘Ghana has a fantastic reputation abroad’

The outgoing United Kingdom’s High Commissioner to Ghana, Harriet Thompson, has lauded Ghana’s international reputation, highlighting the country’s cultural pride, hospitality, and enduring traditions as key elements of its strong global appeal.

Speaking in an interview on Channel One TV‘s The Point of View on Wednesday July 16, she emphasised that Ghana’s image abroad is overwhelmingly positive, largely due to the distinctive warmth and welcoming nature of its people.

“Ghana has a fantastic reputation overseas,” she noted. “Perhaps even more so, Ghanaians have a reputation of being very warm, very welcoming, and very proud of their rich traditions and culture.”

Her comments reflect the longstanding diplomatic and people-to-people ties between Ghana and the UK, as well as growing international recognition of Ghana’s political stability, cultural heritage, and vibrant civil society.

The High Commissioner’s remarks come at a time when Ghana continues to promote itself as a destination for investment, tourism, and Pan-African engagement.

Fitch expects policy rate to hold at 28% as BoG convenes emergency meeting today

0

As the Bank of Ghana (BoG) convenes an emergency session of its Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) today, Thursday, July 17, 2025, Fitch Solutions expects the central bank to maintain its benchmark policy rate at 28%, despite growing signs of easing inflation and mounting pressure for monetary policy loosening.

According to Fitch’s research division—a subsidiary of Fitch Ratings—BoG officials are likely to wait for firmer evidence of sustained disinflation before initiating a rate-cutting cycle.

The central bank surprised markets in March with a 100-basis-point rate hike, citing persistent inflationary pressures.

However, Fitch now projects that BoG could begin lowering rates as early as September, provided macroeconomic indicators continue to improve.

Should the MPC opt to start easing in July, Fitch estimates the policy rate could fall to between 24% and 25% by year-end—below its current projection of 26%.

Headline inflation fell sharply to 13.7% in June, significantly narrowing the gap between inflation and the policy rate. Ghana now holds one of the highest real interest rates among African frontier markets, as the central bank maintains a tight monetary stance.

The ongoing disinflation trend has been bolstered by a relatively stable Ghanaian Cedi and a resilient external sector.

Since May, the Cedi has remained steady, supported by a build-up in international reserves, which climbed to $7.9 billion in April—equivalent to nearly four months of import cover.

This reserve growth has been largely driven by surging gold export revenues and high global gold prices, fuelled by geopolitical uncertainty and strong demand for the metal from central banks globally.

Industry reports confirm Wendy Shay as Ghana’s most streamed female artist, with her musical journey from healthcare professional to entertainment powerhouse now spanning seven years.

The RuffTown Records signee has amassed an estimated $500,000 net worth through music royalties, brand partnerships, and her award-winning Shay Foundation.

Public records show the artist’s 2018 debut single Uber Driver under producer Bullet’s guidance marked the beginning of a chart-dominating career. Verified streaming data reveals collaborations with artists like Shatta Wale on Stevie Wonder have collectively garnered millions of plays across digital platforms. The Ghana Music Rights Organization recently listed Shay among its top royalty earners for the first half of 2025.

Cultural observers note Shay’s 2022 enstoolment as Queen Ewurabena Ofosuhemaa Shay I in Gomoa Afransi reflects her growing societal influence. The Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture included her in last year’s “Music for Development” initiative, recognizing artists contributing to national soft power. Her foundation’s child welfare programs received commendation during the 2024 Forty Under 40 Awards ceremony in Accra.

While entertainment industry analysts highlight Shay’s consistent output – including three studio albums and multiple charting singles – the artist maintains focus on her craft. During a verified interview on United Showbiz last month, she stated music remains her primary commitment without elaborating on personal matters.

Two partner to boost intra-Africa payments

0

The continent’s efforts to simplify financial transactions and bolster economic growth across the country took a significant leap forward when two institutions partnered to launch a single payment platform for cross-border transactions in local currencies.

Through a collaboration between the Pan-African Payment and Settlement Systems (PAPSS) and Onafriq, the move seeks to address the persistent challenges faced by small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and everyday individuals when navigating the complexities of currency and payment systems across Africa.

With the launch of the platform in Accra last Thursday, Ghanaians can now send money to their counterparts in Nigeria using their bank, mobile money or fintech USSD codes and vice versa.

Representatives from both parties demonstrated how to send money through their mobile money accounts to bank accounts in Nigeria using the platform.

Currently, the regulator, Bank of Ghana (BoG), has approved a six-month pilot programme to allow Onafriq and PAPSS to assess transaction flows, user adoption and foreign exchange performance while delivering better rates and more accessible services to customers.

As part of this pilot, Onafriq, which operates in more than 40 countries on the continent, is leveraging PAPSS infrastructure and regulatory coverage to offer its fintech, mobile money and traditional partners in Ghana unparalleled access to cross-border payment capabilities.

The pilot will focus on Nigeria, with further plans of expanding to all 54 African countries after the pilot.

Vision

The Founder and CEO of Onafriq, Dare Okoudjou, explained that the partnership was born out of a shared vision of making cross-border payments as seamless as domestic transactions.

“If you provide a phone number, it should be enough to transact,” Okoudjou said, adding that the goal of enabling users to transfer money effortlessly across different countries, just as they do within their own countries, was necessary to boost intra-African trade.

The initiative, he said, aligned with the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) framework by making free trade more accessible to ordinary individuals, particularly those in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and informal sectors, who lack the resources to navigate existing barriers.

Mr Okoudjou said transaction fees would be determined by the partner organisation (like MTN) while Onafriq would provide the underlying infrastructure for these transactions.

On exchange rates, he said they would be determined by supply and demand dynamics, with expectations that increasing currency participation would lead to better rates for end users.

“This partnership represents a significant step towards enhancing financial integration across Africa, making cross-border transactions easier and more efficient for individuals and businesses alike,” he added.

Local currency

PAPSS CEO Mike Ogbalu explained that the new system would allow transactions to originate and settle in local currencies, significantly reducing reliance on third-party currencies.

“The more we use our currencies, the stronger they become,” Mr Ogbalu said, adding that this multilateral net settlement approach would streamline payments and lower transaction costs.

Bryan Acheampong promises new political leadership style

Dr Bryan Acheampong, MP for Abetifi Dr Bryan Acheampong, MP for Abetifi

As the NPP gets ready for its National Conference on Saturday, July 19, 2025, many are talking about one man—Dr Bryan Acheampong.

His decision to run for the party’s flagbearer isn’t just about politics. It is about fixing what’s broken and bringing people together with a new leadership style.

A statement from his team members and copied to the Ghana News Agency in Accra said Dr Acheampong had served as MP for Abetifi, held top ministerial roles, and built strong and successful businesses in the private sector.

“Through his foundation, he has helped many Ghanaians, showing he’s not just about talk but about action.

“Since he started engaging Ghanaians on his ambition, his message has focused on uniting and renewing the party to grow the economy fairly.

“Many now see him as a leader who acts, unites, and brings fresh energy to the NPP”.

The Statement said the NPP was facing internal challenges with disagreement and doubt, which Dr Acheampong believed was the time to come together, not fight.

“He has asked all party members to focus on building a stronger NPP, not chasing personal ambition. “This is not the time for division or personal ambition. It is the time to build.”

The statement said Dr. Acheampong’s style had been likened to Lee Kuan Yew, the first Prime Minister of Singapore.

“ Singapore had serious problems, but Lee led with discipline, vision, and integrity. He built a strong country by staying focused and being honest. Dr. Acheampong is trying to do the same for the NPP: unite the party, strengthen its core, and build trust to win the love of Ghanaians again.

“Recently, some social media posts tried to paint a confusing picture about his role at the National Council meeting. His team quickly responded with a clear message: any official information must come from the party’s spokespeople. This kind of calm, no-drama leadership is what the party and the country need”.

The statement said Dr. Acheampong’s plan was simple, to rebuild the NPP first as change starts with ordinary people, not just party executives.

“His ideas aim to restore trust and help the party connect better with Ghanaians.

“Ghana is going through a tough time. The NPP needs someone who can bring people together, focus on solutions, and lead with strength. Dr Bryan Acheampong has shown he has the experience, the mindset, and the heart to do it.

“He’s not just running for office. He’s ready to lead a real transformation. If the NPP wants to move forward, this is the kind of leader it must stand behind”.

Renowned Ghanaian artiste, Edem, has been officially unveiled as the Brand Ambassador for the Safer Digital Ghana Campaign, a bold initiative led by the Cyber Security Authority (CSA) under the Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation.

The appointment was formally announced during a brief ceremony held at the CSA Headquarters.

In his acceptance speech, Edem expressed deep gratitude to the ministry for entrusting him with such a vital national responsibility.

He highlighted the importance of digital safety in today’s world, emphasising that the internet, while powerful and resourceful, also poses significant threats that affect individuals, businesses, and even nations.

“We live in an era where the digital world shapes nearly every aspect of our lives; how we learn, work, communicate, and express ourselves.

“With just a few clicks, we gain access to opportunities but also expose ourselves to cyber threats,” he said.

Edem explained that this campaign is more than just about awareness.

He said it aims to empower all Ghanaians, from school children to business owners, government workers, and everyday citizens to take an active role in protecting themselves and their communities online.

“As the face of this campaign, I’m not just here to represent; I’m here to advocate for change.

“I am truly committed to using my platform to promote cyber hygiene, encourage reporting of cyber incidents, and champion safe internet practices especially among the youth who are the direct consumers of my work,” he added.

He concluded by reaffirming his dedication to serving in this role to the best of his abilities and called on all Ghanaians to recognise cybersecurity as a shared responsibility and a national priority.

The CSA believes that with Edem’s influence, the campaign will reach wider audiences, fostering a culture of responsible digital living and securing Ghana’s digital future.

‘I won’t quit politics over Ablekuma North incident’- Hawa Koomson

0

Mavis Hawa Koomson is the former Minister of Fisheries Mavis Hawa Koomson is the former Minister of Fisheries

Former Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture Developemnt, Hawa Koomson, has stated that the brutal assault she suffered during the recent Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun will not force her out of active politics.

Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM and monitored by GhanaWeb on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, she stressed that such actions discourage female participation in politics.

“I will not quit politics; this will rather make me stronger. It won’t deter me, we’ve been fighting for years to end violence against women in politics, and yet this is how we are treated? It’s unfortunate, but I am not giving up.

“Everywhere I go, I protect myself because I am a politician, and people hate me. I’ve become a threat to the NDC. In the last election, I stayed out of the media and spent my time in churches preaching peace, and after the election, I’ve been quiet, minding my business,” she said.

During the recent parliamentary rerun at Ablekuma North, chaos broke out at the Odorkor Methodist Church polling station, where thugs overwhelmed security personnel and physically assaulted several individuals, including the former Awutu Senya East Member of Parliament, Hawa Koomson.

Hawa Koomson was shoved to the ground and stomped in the chest and groin before police intervened to rescue her.

The closely contested rerun ended with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Ewurabena Aubynn, winning with 34,090 votes, narrowly defeating the New Patriotic Party (NPP)’s Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie, who garnered 33,881 votes.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Interior, Mohammed-Mubarak Muntaka, has assured the public that all perpetrators of the violence will be identified and face prosecution in accordance with the law.

Trade minister engages Moroccan delegation on strategic investment partnerships

Abderrahim Cherrab and Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare (R) Abderrahim Cherrab and Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare (R)

The Minister of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, received a visiting delegation from the Kingdom of Morocco led by Abderrahim Cherrab, Deputy Head of Mission at the Moroccan Embassy in Ghana, to explore opportunities for enhanced trade and agribusiness collaboration between the two nations.

Welcoming the delegation, Ofosu-Adjare underscored the longstanding diplomatic and cultural relations between Ghana and Morocco, stressing the mutual benefits that can be harnessed in trade, agribusiness, and tourism.

Drawing from her personal experience in Morocco, she praised the country’s hospitality and expressed optimism about deepening bilateral cooperation, especially in areas such as fertilizer manufacturing, job creation, and food production.

She outlined Ghana’s investor-friendly environment, noting incentives such as tax breaks, low transportation costs, and government-backed support systems that make the country a strategic hub for manufacturing.

“The government is committed to using its purchasing power to promote locally produced goods, and we welcome Morocco’s investment in manufacturing plants that will create jobs and expand market access,” she stated.

On the topic of agribusiness, the minister stressed the Ministry’s focus on commercial contract farming and climate-smart agriculture to ensure consistent raw material supply to local industries.

She highlighted Ghana’s litigation-free lands and irrigation potential as key attractions for investors.

Ofosu-Adjare also emphasised harmonization of trade standards between the two countries, proposing the use of Ghana as a base for Morocco’s automobile investments in West Africa, especially in the electric vehicle space.

“We have a one-stop shop at the Ministry to facilitate investor entry, and we are excited about the future collaborations that lie ahead between Ghana and Morocco,” she assured.

In response, Abderrahim Cherrab expressed Morocco’s keen interest in strengthening ties with Ghana, particularly in the area of food security.

He said the visit followed a recent bilateral engagement between Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, and his Moroccan counterpart, and aimed to assess Ghana’s public sector governance in food systems and identify areas for cooperation.

He disclosed that the Moroccan mission comprised experts from the Moroccan Agency for International Cooperation, National Institutes, and Polytechnic University.

Key items under discussion included the shipment of 2,000 tons of fertilizer to Ghana, the deployment of a diagnostic mission to assess Ghana’s agricultural landscape, and the potential establishment of a fertilizer production unit.

Cherrab highlighted the shared challenges between the two countries, including over-reliance on primary agriculture, low soil fertility, poor farm input usage, and post-harvest losses.

He emphasised Morocco’s readiness to share best practices in food systems and soil fertility management, and to foster South-South cooperation through joint projects and knowledge exchange.

He further mentioned a Memorandum of Understanding signed in 2015 between both nations, aimed at advancing bilateral regulations and cooperation.

The Moroccan delegation called for a joint commercial meeting between Ghana’s Ministry of Trade and Morocco’s Ministry of Industry and Trade to facilitate next steps in collaboration.

“We are hopeful that this visit will usher in a new era of meaningful cooperation, particularly in food security, which remains vital to our shared goals for sustainable development,” he concluded.

The meeting ended on a note of mutual commitment to continued collaboration, with both parties agreeing to fast-track engagements in trade harmonization, agribusiness development, and industrial investment for shared prosperity.

Education Minister proposes voluntary fund for teacher accommodation deficit

The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has expressed the government’s commitment to addressing the acute housing deficit facing teachers across the country.

Speaking at the inauguration of the National Teaching Council (NTC) and the Chartered Institute of Bankers Council on Tuesday, July 15, the Minister proposed a voluntary housing fund, where teachers could contribute up to GH¢200 monthly.

These contributions, he explained, would be complemented by government support. The fund, backed by pension schemes, would serve as collateral to facilitate the construction of decent accommodation for teachers, particularly those stationed in rural and underserved areas.

This initiative, he noted, is aimed at tackling the long-standing shelter challenges teachers face both during and after their years of service.

“I met with your pension fund managers, and I pledged to them that we should work together, and the government is ready to partner with you in addressing the housing or shelter needs of teachers.

“If, for instance, teachers will agree that at the end of each month you make a token contribution of 200 cedis, government probably can complement it with another 200 cedis, then we can build two or three bedrooms house, service it with that, and use the pension fund as a guaranteed collateral so that five, ten years, a teacher can walk home gallantly that he is retiring  with a home and not threatened by the security of post-retirement”. he said

Cameroon’s Biya, 92, reshuffles military top brass ahead of vote

0

Cameroon’s 92-year-old President Paul Biya, the world’s oldest head of state, has overhauled the military’s top ranks in what analysts say is an effort to ensure the armed forces back his bid for an eighth term after a public outcry.

The personnel moves, announced late on Tuesday in a series of presidential decrees, affect nearly all branches of the armed forces.

They include the appointment of new chiefs of staff for the infantry, air force and navy as well as the promotion of eight brigadier generals to the rank of major general.

One of the promoted generals is the coordinator of the elite Rapid Intervention Battalion (BIR), a special forces unit often deployed in counter-terrorism operations and seen as central to Biya’s security apparatus. The decrees also named a new special presidential military adviser.

The decrees were published two days after Biya, in power since 1982, announced he would run for his eighth term in office in Cameroon’s presidential election scheduled for October 12. The seven-year term could keep him in office until he is nearly 100.

The announcement prompted an unprecedented public outcry in the press and on social media in Cameroon, where Biya’s age and long absences have raised questions about his fitness to rule.

The government has said Biya is in good health and dismissed any suggestions otherwise.

The decrees concerning the armed forces reflect “a strategy by President Biya and his collaborators to consolidate power by building a fortress of loyal army generals around him” that can suppress any protest to his continued rule, said Anthony Antem, peace and security analyst at the Nkafu Policy Institute in Yaounde.

Celestin Delanga, researcher at the Institute for Security Studies (ISS), said the decrees “come in a unique political and security context.”

Biya wants to ensure stability during and after the election, and “additional trusted personnel are needed” for that, he said.

The cocoa- and oil-producing Central African nation also faces a host of serious security challenges, notably a conflict with Anglophone separatists and threats from Nigeria-based Islamist fighters in the north.

The government gave no explanation for the overhaul.

The last significant military shake-up in Cameroon came just last year, shortly after Biya returned in October from his latest extended stay abroad which revived speculation about his health.

Let’s see if officials still idle cars now that fuel is on their tab

0

The Managing Editor of the Insight Newspaper, Kwasi Pratt Jnr, has said he is closely watching to see whether government officials will continue the habit of leaving their vehicle engines running for hours, now that they will be paying for their own fuel.

His comments follow President John Mahama’s recent directive to scrap fuel allowances for government appointees.

Speaking on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana on July 16, 2025, Pratt noted that many officials often leave their engines idling during meetings simply to avoid returning to a hot car.

“I’m waiting to see if they will leave their engines running for hours now that they’ll be buying the fuel themselves,” he said.

He further urged the government to strictly implement the policy and ensure effective monitoring to prevent abuse.

President Mahama’s directive forms part of broader cost-cutting measures aimed at reducing government expenditure.

Build on teacher licensure reforms – Eduwatch to Mahama

0

Executive Director of Africa Education Watch, Kofi Asare, is calling on the current government under President John Dramani Mahama to build on the teacher licensure reform efforts initiated during the Akufo-Addo administration, rather than discard them.

His comments follow a recent directive from the Ministry of Education instructing the National Teaching Council (NTC) to organise a final sitting of the current teacher licensure examination framework by August 30.

The directive, issued by Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu during the inauguration of the newly constituted NTC board on Tuesday, July 15, forms part of a broader plan to transition to a new framework for assessing teacher qualifications.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s The Point of View on Wednesday, July 16, Mr. Asare explained that the review process began under the previous administration in 2024, led by then Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, who initiated extensive stakeholder consultations.

He stressed the importance of continuity in education reforms, saying, “Building upon is good for policy development.”

According to him, student-teachers had hoped the new Mahama administration would review the existing licensure regime, which has long been mired in political controversy.

“The Teacher Licensure exams have been controversial because almost every educational policy issue in Ghana has been politicised since the introduction of the Free Senior High School,” he said.

“The second reason why it has been politicised is that there are many student-teachers who were not happy with the licensure regime.”

He added, “They were expecting that since the NPP government introduced the policy on a full scale, a new political authority would be the best to review the licensure exams. The student-teachers had an issue with the examination because of the high failure rates.”

“And also because of the inconvenience of writing an exam almost one year after they had finished school. Even though there are concerns, the reform leading to the concerns has been quite grounded in politics.”

Talents wasting in Ghana – Gloria Sarfo decries decline of film industry

Ghanaian actress Gloria Sarfo has voiced her frustration over the current state of the country’s film industry, describing it as a space where talent is being wasted due to a lack of opportunities and consistent production.

In a social media post, the actress expressed concern about the limited number of films being produced in Ghana, especially when compared to Nigeria’s film industry, where, according to her, actors are constantly engaged in back-to-back productions.

Gloria lamented that Ghanaian producers struggle to even shoot a single movie in a year, while many gifted performers remain underutilized.

She revealed that fans and loved ones often tell her she is wasting her talent in Ghana—an observation she now finds difficult to refute.

“It’s heartbreaking,” she wrote. “We are wasting so much talent because the industry is practically idle. Something needs to change.”

She described the situation as disheartening and called on stakeholders to urgently find sustainable solutions to revive the once-vibrant industry.

Gloria Sarfo further suggested that Ghanaian actors may have to take the initiative to produce their own films, to fill the void left by inactive producers.

Calling for national attention and collaboration, she urged the creative arts community to come together and reignite the industry, which she believes still holds immense potential—if given the necessary push.

‘Vice President’s residence hosted Kevin Taylor after secret arrival’ – Adom-Otchere alleges

0

A photo collage of Paul Adom-Otchere (L) and Kevin Taylor (R) A photo collage of Paul Adom-Otchere (L) and Kevin Taylor (R)

Good Evening Ghana show host Paul Adom-Otchere has made damning allegations against National Security, claiming they helped Kevin Taylor enter the country unnoticed despite a bench warrant for his arrest.

Speaking on his show aired Tuesday, July 15, 2025, Adom-Otchere alleged that security operatives, in defiance of a bench warrant issued by the courts, met Taylor at the airport and granted him access to Gate 19 at Kotoka International Airport, a section he claims is reserved exclusively for high-profile officials and diplomats.

“This is what we have been told, but we just hope it’s not true. He arrived as Kevin Taylor and went through gate 19 at the airport, which is ordinarily reserved for high-profile diplomats. He was met by national security in gross violation,” Adom-Otchere alleged.

According to him, his arrival in the country with the help of the state security apparatus constitutes what he describes as a ‘gross violation of a court order’, one that cited Kevin Taylor for contempt over allegedly scandalising the judiciary.

“Ministers and the president may or may not be aware. He has arrived in Ghana in gross violation of a court order. The court order was against contempt of court. He spoke about certain things that the court believed were scandalising.

“…This guy sits in America, scandalises the court in the name of politics, a bench warrant is issued, his party is in power, so the state security apparatus sponsored by the taxpayer goes to pick the guy who has scandalised one of the most important institutions of democracy, the courts, and they bring him in,” he indicated.

Adom-Otchere further alleged that, with the help of National Security, Taylor was accommodated at Prestige Link, the official residence reserved for the Vice President of Ghana, raising questions about the rationale behind such actions by state security operatives.

He condemned the development, raising concerns over how someone like Taylor, who, according to him, has a reputation for verbally attacking prominent figures and institutions in the country, could be allowed to stay at a residence regarded as highly prestigious.

“He came by United Airlines flight U A 996, according to the story, from Washington, D.C. with an entourage. The report is that they sent him to Prestige Link to go and live in the house that is reserved for the vice president of Ghana. This is the same house that John Dramani Mahama lived in as vice president and even as president. When President Mahama was exiting his presidency in 2016, this is the house that he wrote to Nana Akufo-Addo, and Nana Akufo-Addo agreed that President Mahama could have it. Later on, party hawks prevailed on Akufo-Addo by force that President Mahama cannot have it and so, President Mahama had to relocate and find his own place where he has been living until he was re-elected as president,” he continued.

He further expressed his disgust, saying, “This house is where Aliu Mahama lived. It’s a COCOBOD house that is reserved for the vice president of Ghana. This is the house that has been given to ‘Mr Sansa Daly’ and his entourage to stay in the official residence of the vice president of Ghana. This guy sets up a media organisation to basically drop down insults on every important Ghanaian. He supports and assists the political party; there’s no problem. Every political party supports their own, but you cannot support your own by using taxpayers’ resources to bring in somebody like that.”

Adom-Otchere went on to suggest a possible motive behind Taylor’s arrival in the country, revealing that Taylor has filed an application at the apex court, possibly in relation to the bench warrant issued for his arrest.

“He is now worried about the bench warrants, so he has filed an application at the Supreme Court. This is very interesting, and it should be worrisome if it is true that he is staying in the official residence of the Vice President of Ghana. Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang appears to have her own house she’s comfortable with, and doesn’t want to move, so the vice president’s official residence is vacant. This is the place where a fugitive from justice, against whom there’s a bench warrant, is protected by the state apparatus to go and stay.”

He therefore cautioned the government over its actions, calling on officials to be held to account.

Dual-track model best for supervising virtual assets – Dr Atuahene

0

Banking Consultant, Dr Richmond Atuahene Banking Consultant, Dr Richmond Atuahene

Financial sector watchdogs – the Bank of Ghana (BoG) and Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) – must adopt a hybrid regulatory approach combining principles-based and risk-based frameworks to effectively supervise its growing virtual assets ecosystem, according to a new policy recommendation by banking and governance consultant Dr Richmond Akwasi Atuahene.

The recommendation, contained in a paper dubbed ‘Pathways to the financial regulation of virtual assets (crypto-assets) eco-systems in Ghana: A Case for Hybrid Financial Regulatory Approaches’, comes as the country prepares for its first comprehensive regulatory regime on cryptocurrencies and digital assets.

The proposed model seeks to balance regulatory flexibility with targeted enforcement in high-risk areas such as money laundering, consumer fraud and market volatility.

Dr Atuahene argues that such an approach will provide a stable foundation for innovation while protecting financial integrity and investor interests.

“Principles-based regulation enables Ghana to accommodate technological change without constantly rewriting the rules, while a risk-based approach ensures that the most dangerous activities receive the most regulatory attention,” Dr Atuahene said in a recent policy briefing. “It is a measured response to a dynamic, high-stakes environment.”

Crypto regulation gains momentum

The recommendation comes as Ghana moves toward formal oversight of the digital assets sector. In August 2024, the Bank of Ghana released draft guidelines for regulating Virtual Asset Service Providers (VASPs), with plans to enact a VASP Act by the end of September 2025.

All VASPs, including crypto exchanges, custodians and wallet providers, are required to register with the central bank by August 15, 2025, or face disqualification from future licensing.

Historically, both the Bank of Ghana and the SEC maintained a conservative stance on cryptocurrencies. In 2018 and 2022, the central bank issued public notices warning that cryptocurrencies were not legal tender and operated outside the existing regulatory framework. The SEC echoed this position in 2019, cautioning investors that it had not approved any crypto investment products.

Despite these warnings, the domestic market for virtual assets has expanded rapidly, fuelled by high mobile phone penetration, widespread Internet access and growing interest in alternative financial assets. A recent study suggests that up to 17 percent of Ghanaian adults now own some form of digital asset, predominantly Bitcoin and stablecoins.

Global alignment and local adaptation

The proposed hybrid regulatory model aligns with international best practices promoted by the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), the Financial Stability Board (FSB) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF). These bodies have consistently advised jurisdictions to adopt frameworks that are proportionate, risk-sensitive and technologically neutral.

Under a principles-based approach, regulators articulate desired outcomes—such as transparency, fair dealing and market stability—without prescribing rigid rules. This gives regulated entities the flexibility to determine how best to comply, encouraging innovation and adaptability.

A risk-based approach, by contrast, prioritises regulatory focus and enforcement according to the relative risk posed by different actors or activities. It allows for efficient allocation of regulatory resources, with heightened scrutiny applied to entities with systemic reach or those exposed to financial crime risks.

Some investment analysts believe that combining these models, the country can build a regulatory system that is both resilient and responsive, where the framework avoids the rigidity of a rules-based approach, which often lags behind innovation, while ensuring adequate safeguards in areas of highest concern.

Institutional readiness and capacity gaps

Dr Atuahene’s report emphasises the need for institutional preparedness to implement such a framework. Both the Bank of Ghana and the SEC will require significant capacity-building, including specialised training in blockchain analytics, digital forensics and market surveillance. Cross-agency coordination will also be critical to address regulatory overlaps and ensure comprehensive supervision.

Additionally, the report recommends the use of regulatory sandboxes—controlled environments where firms can test innovative products under regulatory supervision—as a tool to support market development while maintaining oversight.

“The success of any hybrid regulatory model will depend not only on its design, but also on the institutional strength and enforcement capabilities of the regulators involved,” Dr Atuahene noted.

Crypto prices and policy urgency

The urgency of regulatory clarity is heightened by recent developments in global crypto markets. Bitcoin reached a new all-time high of US$123,000 in early July before stabilising around US$120,000, driven by institutional demand, favourable U.S. policy signals and expectations of looser monetary conditions. Ghanaian participation in the market has followed suit, with a growing number of retail investors exposed to the asset’s volatility.

Without a clear regulatory framework, local investors remain vulnerable to fraud, market manipulation and the collapse of unregulated platforms.

Barcelona unveiled this mural of Yamal to celebrate the news Barcelona unveiled this mural of Yamal to celebrate the news

Barcelona have officially confirmed that 18-year-old forward Lamine Yamal will wear the club’s iconic No. 10 shirt starting from the 2025/26 season.

The announcement was made on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, the same day the Spanish international signed a new long-term contract that will keep him at the club until June 2031.

Yamal takes over the famous number from Ansu Fati, who joined AS Monaco earlier this summer after struggling with injuries in recent seasons.

The No. 10 shirt has previously been worn by some of Barcelona’s greatest legends, including Lionel Messi, Ronaldinho, Rivaldo, Romário, and Diego Maradona.

Barcelona marked the moment with a post on social media that read, “From Rocafonda to the world. Lamine Yamal 10,” celebrating both the shirt reveal and the player’s 18th birthday, which he celebrated on June 13.

The highly rated forward, who emerged from Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy, has already made 106 senior appearances for the club, scoring 25 goals.

He wore the No. 19 shirt last season, having previously featured with the No. 41 and No. 27 before breaking into the first team.

Yamal’s new contract includes a €1 billion release clause, highlighting Barcelona’s commitment to keeping one of their most promising young stars amid interest from top clubs across Europe.

His appointment as the new No. 10 comes at a symbolic moment for the club, as Yamal has been widely seen as a key part of Barcelona’s plans to rebuild and compete for major trophies again.

Messi famously wore the shirt from 2008 until his departure to Paris Saint-Germain in 2021, during which time he became Barcelona’s all-time top scorer and won 10 LaLiga titles and four Champions League trophies.

Having already won two LaLiga titles, a Copa del Rey, and a Spanish Supercopa, the teenager is expected to play an even bigger role in the coming years as he steps into one of the most significant shirt numbers in world football.

Elegance, Confidence, and Timeless Beauty

0

There’s something undeniably captivating about a “goddess look.” It’s a blend of grace, poise, and confidence that exudes an almost ethereal charm. Serving classy goddess looks doesn’t require elaborate, over-the-top outfits or excessive embellishments. Rather, it’s about embracing timeless elegance, simplicity, and confidence in your own beauty. Whether you’re dressing for a special event or simply want to channel that goddess energy into your everyday style, here’s how you can effortlessly pull off a classy, goddess-inspired look.

A key element of a goddess-inspired look is clothing that flows gracefully around the body, often with draped fabrics or flattering cuts. Think of floor-length gowns, empire waist dresses, or flowing skirts that move with you. Soft, breathable materials like chiffon, silk, and satin not only add movement but also elevate the overall look, giving you an ethereal feel. A maxi dress with a subtle slit or a dress with an open back can evoke the effortless beauty of a goddess, making you feel both regal and serene.

To complement your elegant outfit, go for makeup that enhances your natural beauty without overpowering it. A soft, dewy complexion with a light foundation or BB cream creates a fresh, glowing look. Focus on subtle, natural tones—think bronze highlighter for a sun-kissed glow, soft peach blush, and neutral eyeshadow. A soft winged eyeliner or full, fluttery lashes will bring attention to your eyes. Finish with a nude or soft red lip to keep the focus on your graceful beauty.

For a true goddess vibe, hair plays an essential role in defining the overall look. Soft, cascading waves, a sleek bun, or a chic updo exude elegance and royalty. If you’re looking for a more relaxed look, loose curls or a messy braid with a few wisps of hair falling gently around your face will add a relaxed yet sophisticated vibe. You can also accessorize your hair with delicate headbands, gold hairpins, or floral embellishments to further enhance the goddess aura.

Jewelry should be minimal but striking. Think delicate gold or silver pieces like thin chains, stud earrings, and stackable rings. Statement earrings can be added for an evening look, but keep them elegant and refined. A dainty bracelet or a cuff with subtle detailing can complete the look, adding an extra touch of class without overwhelming your outfit. Remember, less is often more when channeling a classy goddess.

The most important aspect of serving a classy goddess look is carrying yourself with confidence. A goddess isn’t just defined by her clothes, hair, or makeup; it’s her poise, grace, and the way she holds herself that makes her truly captivating. Stand tall, move gracefully, and radiate self-assurance. Confidence is the most powerful accessory you can wear, and it will make any look feel effortlessly chic.

While bold colors have their place, a true goddess-inspired look often involves soft, neutral tones like ivory, beige, gold, and pastels. These shades have an inherent elegance and are easy to wear, giving you a sophisticated and polished appearance. You can mix these colors in your outfit, accessories, and makeup to create a cohesive, graceful look.

Drawing inspiration from nature is another way to evoke goddess energy. Floral patterns, leaf motifs, and earthy tones reflect natural beauty, while fabrics with a shimmer can resemble the light of the stars. Even choosing accessories like stone necklaces, crystal earrings, or gold bangles can enhance this connection to nature, adding to the goddess-like vibe.

Conclusion: Serving classy goddess looks is not about trying to fit into a mold, but rather about embracing your own unique beauty with confidence and poise. By choosing flowing silhouettes, subtle makeup, elegant hairstyles, and minimalistic accessories, you can create a timeless, graceful look that makes you feel like a goddess every day. The key is to carry yourself with self-assurance, embodying elegance and sophistication in every aspect of your appearance.

My Mother Has Warned Me Not To Get Pregnant For My Husband Because- Woman Narrates Painfully

0

From the very start, my mother tried to make me marry a man just because he was rich. She believed that his money would secure my future, but I couldn’t agree with her. I gently told her, “I’m sorry, but I can’t marry him. I don’t love him. I can’t see myself spending the rest of my life with someone I don’t have feelings for. Plus, he’s much older than me. It just doesn’t feel right.”

But she wouldn’t take no for an answer. She tried everything she could—talking, begging, even guilt-tripping me—just to convince me to say yes to him. But no matter what she did, I stood my ground. I refused to give in to the pressure.

Eventually, when I felt ready, I introduced the man I truly loved to her, the one I wanted to marry. That’s when everything really fell apart. She flat-out refused. She said she would never support our relationship or our marriage. She didn’t even try to……Read Full Story Here………

Parliament passes Fisheries and Aquaculture Bill

0

Parliament has passed the Fisheries and Aquaculture Bill, 2025, to enhance effective regulation of Ghana’s fisheries and aquaculture sector.

The purpose of the bill is to establish a modern legal framework to improve governance, development and sustainability within the sector, which plays a crucial role in the national economy.

The bill specifically seeks to review and consolidate laws related to the sustainable exploitation of fisheries resources.

It also provides for the implementation of an Electronic Monitoring System to meet European Union and United States market requirements for legally sourced seafood.

Once assented to by the President, the bill will establish a Fisheries Commission to ensure the long-term conservation, development, management and utilisation of Ghana’s fisheries and aquaculture resources. It also introduces stricter penalties for illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing.

Ghana’s current legal framework, the Fisheries Act, 2002 (Act 625), is outdated and lacks provisions to effectively address IUU fishing and impose adequate penalties on offenders. Ghana was issued a “yellow card” by the European Commission in 2021 for failing to tackle IUU fishing adequately.

Failure to update the legal regime could result in a “red card”, which would trigger a ban on the export of fish and fishery products to the European market, potentially costing Ghana an estimated $425.9 million in lost revenue.

The bill was presented to Parliament by the Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Emelia Arthur, on June 3, 2025, and was referred to the Committee on Food, Agriculture and Cocoa Affairs for consideration.

Restoring Ghana’s ecosystem: The Politics, Science, Human, Economy – Reflections from BiM-NECS 2 – EnviroNews

At a time when Ghana’s forests, wetlands, and grasslands are buckling under pressure from human activity and climate change, the 2nd Biennial Media Forum on Natural Resources, Environment, Climate Change and Science (BiM-NECS 2) served as a clarion call for integrated action.

BiM NECS 2BiM NECS 2
Prof. Mercy Derkyi, Director, Quality Assurance and Academic Planning Directorate, University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) Sunyani, delivering her keynote address at BiM NECS 2 in Kumasi

With the theme “Ecosystem Restoration: The Politics, the Science, the Human, and the Economy,” the Forum gathered journalists, public officials, scientists, researchers, development workers, civil society actors and gender advocates in Kumasi on Tuesday, June 3, 2025, to reimagine the future of ecosystem restoration, through the lens of both policy and people.

Actualising Ghana’s vested interest in ecosystem restoration

In her keynote address, the Director, Quality Assurance and Academic Planning Directorate of the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR), Sunyani, Professor Mercy Adutwumwaa Derkyi acknowledged Ghana’s vested interest in ecosystem restoration as seen in major initiatives such as the Bonn Challenge, the National Reforestation Programme, Green Ghana and Tree for Life, involving state and non-state actors.

However, she specified that the success and sustainability of such efforts are undermined by “the politics of power dynamics, social issues, governance lapses, corruption, and weak enforcement.”

Prof. Derkyi called for a strong political will and genuine grassroots involvement as critical to overcoming these structural challenges. “We must ask ourselves,” she said, “how do we move from declaratory commitments to concrete actions? Who decides which ecosystems matter most? And how do we meaningfully empower local communities in this process?

In answering these questions, the keynote speaker outlined several guiding principles for effective ecosystem restoration, including: a clear definition of restoration goals, assessment of ecosystem recoverability, making a choice between natural regeneration and assisted restoration, conservation prioritization for areas deemed beyond recovery and balancing scientific knowledge with traditional ecological knowledge (TEK).

Prof. Derkyi underscored the importance of leveraging innovations in ecological science such as remote sensing, drone technology, geographic information systems (GIS) and emerging AI tools, to monitor ecosystem health and inform evidence-based interventions. She emphasised that “balancing scientific knowledge with traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) is vital for crafting sustainable and inclusive restoration strategies.”

Among the scientific and institutional initiatives, she highlighted were: the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research-Forestry Research Institute of Ghana’s (CSIR-FORIG) work in high-quality forest tree seedling production and the promotion of lesser known species; and UENR’s Earth Observation Research and Innovation Centre (EORIC), which provides real-time satellite and GIS solutions in areas such as climate, disasters, biodiversity, water, energy, agriculture, ecosystems and health. This includes the Carbon Tower Project under the Carbon Flux Monitoring Project in Bia Tano, which measures forest-level carbon dioxide flux and supports Ghana’s mitigation and adaptation efforts.

Prof. Derkyi cited another key project, the “EU-supported Landscapes and Environmental Agility across the Nation (LEAN)” initiative, which she commended for combining scientific research with traditional knowledge. Implemented by Tropenbos Ghana and EcoCare Ghana and their local partners, the LEAN project ensures community involvement and provides research grants to university students including those from UENR.

Prof. Derkyi further called for the establishment of a national Data Centre to track progress on Ghana’s ecological restoration targets, especially those under the UN Decade of Ecosystem Restoration, and to support transparency and accountability. She advocated for the active involvement of key institutions like the Forestry Commission, academia, and the media to ensure inclusive partnerships that enhance communication and collaboration among researchers and journalists.

“Restoration is not just about nature – it is also about livelihoods,” Prof. Derkyi concluded, stating that “Healthy ecosystems can drive green jobs, eco-tourism, and sustainable local enterprises.” However, she cautioned that restoration must not rely solely on external donor funding, which is often unsustainable. She proposed long-term national commitment and investment in nature-based developments.

The human dimension of restoration

The Principal Project Manager at Proforest African Regional Office in Accra, Afua Serwaa Akoto Prempeh, who chaired the event, urged the media to translate the statistics of environmental degradation and climate change into stories that resonate with the realities of everyday Ghanaians.

To strengthen her point, she used the example of 17-year-old Aisha from Kundugu, in the Wa East District of Ghana’s Upper West Region, who having migrated down south, now works as a porter in the Madina market. Ms. Prempeh spotlighted the economic toll of climate change on rural livelihoods, warning that without urgent climate action, an additional one million people could fall into poverty, with household incomes projected to fall by as much as 40% by 2050.

“These are not just numbers,” she stressed. “They are lived experiences of countless young people like Aisha, whose families can no longer survive on farming due to climate variability.” Ms. Prempeh cited Aisha’s story to ascertain some fundamental issues.

First, it lends credence to research by the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) proving that in northern Ghana, a high climate vulnerability hotspot, youth migration (both rural-urban and rural-rural), is a popular phenomenon, with nearly one in five Ghanaian youth born in the north residing in the south. Secondly, Aisha’s story turns the politics, facts, numbers, science, the abstract into reality, and “brings to light the intersectionality of people, nature and climate.”

The Chairperson noted that Ghana will need an estimated $2 billion annually to effectively respond to climate impacts. She explained that this daunting figure underscores the critical role of the media in making climate data more accessible and actionable for the public and policymakers alike.

Ms. Prempeh applauded the Forum’s founding vision, which recognizes that how the media communicates environmental issues is just as vital as what is communicated. “Media has a powerful role in disseminating public interest information such as those relating to natural resources, environment, climate change and science through relatable and actionable knowledge products.”

She also highlighted the importance of inclusivity, urging the media to ensure that marginalised voices are not left out of the conversation.

EPA’s new environmental face

The Ashanti Regional Director of the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA), Dr. Jackson Nyantakyi, presented highlights of the newly enacted Environmental Protection Act, 2025 (Act 1124). It replaces the outdated Environmental Protection Act 1994 (Act 490) that established the Environmental Protection Agency. Act 1124 addresses gaps such as weak sanctions and poor inter-agency coordination on environmentally related matters as well as inadequate coverage of climate change issues.

Notably, Act 1124 empowers the Authority to block rezoning if it poses environmental risks and establishes a National Environment Fund to finance long-term sustainability initiatives.

Looking Ahead: The Media’s Pivotal Role

Instituted in 2023 by the Media Platform on Environment and Climate Change (MPEC) in partnership with the Afro-Sino Centre of International Relations (ASCIR) and The Steminist Foundation Ghana, BiM-NECS continues to affirm that the media is a force in environmental governance.

Touching on the importance of the BiM NECS Forum, the Chairperson stated: “This Forum exists because we believe informed conversations can drive change when they connect knowledge, practice, and policy in meaningful ways.”

This year’s Forum, organised with support from Proforest and Tropenbos Ghana, ended with the presentation of the BiM NECS 2 Kumasi Declaration. It outlined 12 action points including a resolve to elevate ecosystem restoration as a national and regional media priority through an annual media campaign aligned with the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration.

As Ghana gears up to meet her 2030 ecosystem restoration targets, BiM-NECS 2 was a reminder that restoring nature means restoring connections: between science and society, politics and people, and economics and ecosystems.

President John Dramani Mahama has pledged to commence and complete the Greater Kumasi Bypass Project under the ‘Big Push’ initiative, as well as the Accra–Kumasi Expressway, to ease traffic congestion and enhance the free movement of people and goods.

As part of his ‘Thank You Tour’ of the Ashanti Region following his resounding victory in the 2024 elections, on Wednesday, July 16, President John Dramani Mahama inspected the long-stalled Krofrom Market project, which has remained incomplete since its commencement in 2007.

He assured that the market will be completed and fully operational by the end of 2026. He also visited the Kumasi Central Market to assess progress on ongoing works.

At the Kumasi Jubilee Park, President Mahama engaged with constituents, party supporters, and faithfuls, where he reiterated his commitment to completing all stalled projects in the region.

These include the Mamponteng Market, Kejetia Market Phase Two, Afari Military Hospital, Komfo Anokye Maternity and Children’s Block, Sewua Regional Hospital, Suame Interchange Project, and the Boankra Inland Project. He also pledged to rehabilitate the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.

President Mahama further promised to commence and complete the Greater Kumasi Bypass Project under the ‘Big Push’ initiative to ease traffic congestion.

“We’re moving boldly with our ‘Big Push Agenda’, the World Bank estimates that Ghana has a deficit of infrastructure valued at $1.5 billion every year. The ‘Big Push Agenda’ is a $10 billion infrastructure agenda programme which will span 5 years at a rate of $2 billion a year.

“This will prioritise strategic infrastructure to unlock national productivity. Under the ‘Big Push’, we’re going to commence the construction of what we call the Greater Kumasi Bypass,” He stated.

He also assured the reconstruction of roads in the Tepa, Adansi, and Manso areas.

President Mahama also pledged to commence and ensure the construction and completion of the Accra–Kumasi Expressway, which will cut the travelling distance from Kumasi to Accra by 50km before the end of his tenure in 2029.

“The long-awaited Accra-Kumasi Expressway is on course. Feasibility and design work are in progress. And God willing, we shall cut the sod early next year [2025], for the start of this iconic project,” He stated

Addressing the environmental destruction caused by illegal mining, President Mahama emphasised that his government is not against mining, but against illegal and irresponsible practices.

He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to combating illegal mining, commonly known as ‘galamsey’, and promoting sustainable, lawful mining operations.

Watch as NDC member threatens, curses Hawa Koomson over 2024 election violence

Hawa Koomson was accused of being responsible for the death of an NDC member during the 2024 polls Hawa Koomson was accused of being responsible for the death of an NDC member during the 2024 polls

An old video from the aftermath of the electoral violence that led to the death of a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Awutu Senya East constituency during the 2024 general election has resurfaced.

The video re-emerged following the assault of the former Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, Mavis Hawa Koomson, at a polling station during the recent rerun of the 2024 parliamentary election for the Ablekuma North constituency.

The said video showed the Director of Eagle Eyesight Spirit, Patrick Tagoe, raining curses and threatening Hawa Koomson, who was the candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the constituency’s parliamentary election.

Patrick Tagoe accused the former legislator, who was Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development under former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, of being responsible for the death of the NDC member.

He threatened to storm Hawa Koomson’s home with his guys should the police fail to take action against her, adding that posterity will judge her.

“Hawa Koomson, are you okay? Are you normal? If nobody is going to advise this woman, time will. When your son was stabbed, all hell broke loose. Today, you have sent your boys to go and kill someone because of an election.

“You have killed someone’s child, and you are expecting to enjoy life with your children… if that happens then the God we serve is not alive,” he fumed.

“A time is coming… If God exists, I send a sickness that has no cure to Hawa Koomson, her husband and her children… This is very painful. It is not that the person has done something to you, but you made them shoot him,” he added.

Emmanuel Twumasi joins Polish side Piast Gliwice on a two-year deal

0

Ghanaian defender Emmanuel Twumasi Ghanaian defender Emmanuel Twumasi

Ghanaian defender Emmanuel Twumasi has signed for Polish Ekstraklasa side Piast Gliwice on a two-year contract. The move gives the defender a fresh start after five seasons with FC Dallas in Major League Soccer.

The 28-year-old joined Piast as a free agent when his Texas club contract ended in 2024. Twumasi played regularly for FC Dallas during his time in the MLS. He proved reliable across different defensive positions.

Football fans who follow transfer news on different platforms, such as those who watch live betting stream content , have seen more African players move to European leagues. These platforms provide real-time updates on player movements, contract negotiations, and transfer rumors, giving supporters immediate access to breaking news as deals unfold. The live coverage allows fans to track multiple leagues simultaneously and spot emerging trends in player migrations.

Poland’s top division attracts players who want to compete at the European level.

Twumasi gained experience during his American years. He played for Austin Bold, Oklahoma City Energy, Michigan Bucks, and GPS Portland Phoenix before FC Dallas. The Right to Dream Academy graduate adapted well to different tactical roles. He played both right-back and winger when teams needed him there.

His European move represents an important step for Twumasi. He must adapt to Polish football’s different style and physical demands. Piast Gliwice finished 10th last season. The club made big changes over the summer and released 12 players. They brought in new faces to rebuild the squad.

Max Moelder became the new head coach. The Swedish manager replaced Aleksandar Vukovic. The 40-year-old comes from Landskrona BoIS. He has experience with young players and likes fast, attack-minded football. This style could suit Twumasi’s pace and ability to play different positions.

Twumasi is Piast’s third summer signing. French midfielder Quentin Boisgard and Spanish striker Adrian Dalmau also joined. The big squad changes give new players real chances to earn first-team spots.

European clubs continue to target Ghanaian players who have done well in other strong leagues. Twumasi’s MLS experience gave him exposure to tough competition. The tactical discipline he learned in America should help him in Polish football.

Piast Gliwice started pre-season training with Twumasi included. Manager Moelder works on his tactical plans for the new season. Fans want to see how the Ghanaian performs in European football after his good years in America.

The transfer could open doors back to the Ghana national team . Good performances in Poland might catch the attention of national team coaches. Twumasi knows he must prove himself in this new environment. He wants to help Piast do better than their mid-table finish last season.

His move follows other Ghanaian players who have gone to European clubs recently. These players look for new challenges and career growth in different countries. Piast’s decision to sign Twumasi shows they want experienced players who can make an immediate difference.

The club hopes to mix experienced professionals like Twumasi with younger talent. This approach aims to build a stronger squad that can compete better in Polish football. Twumasi becomes part of a rebuild project that wants to improve the club’s league position and overall performance in domestic competitions.

Stonebwoy applauds gov’t for appointing creative arts professionals to leadership roles

0

Award-winning Afro-Dancehall musician Stonebwoy has commended the current National Democratic Congress (NDC) government for appointing professionals from the creative arts sector to key positions in governance.

He described the move as a major step forward for the industry and a source of inspiration for active creatives.

According to Stonebwoy, the inclusion of musicians, actors, and other practitioners in national leadership reflects a shift in mindset—one that recognises creatives as important contributors to national development.

“In the past, appointments were mostly limited to other sectors, leaving creatives underrepresented,” he noted. “But now, the government has put light on some creatives in the music and movie industry. Usually, appointees are in other sectors, but now creative practitioners are at the forefront.”

He said the development serves as a strong motivation for younger talents to aim higher and take national service seriously.

Stonebwoy also expressed a personal desire to contribute more meaningfully to national development, stating that he has a lot to offer as a creative professional.

However, he cautioned against favoritism in the distribution of opportunities and urged leaders to promote fairness and merit-based appointments.

“I have a lot of service to render to the nation, and I hope to be actively involved in initiatives,” he added.

Lamine Yamal Under Investigation Over Alleged Birthday Discrimination

0

Lamine Yamal

Spain’s Ministry for Social Rights has called for an investigation into potential violations of disability laws after reports emerged that individuals with dwarfism were hired as entertainers for Barcelona star Lamine Yamal’s 18th birthday celebration.

According to Spanish news agency EFE, footage shared on social media—despite a reported phone ban at the event—appeared to show people with dwarfism arriving at the party venue. The images prompted swift condemnation from the Association for People with Achondroplasia and Other Skeletal Dysplasias with Dwarfism (ADEE), which labeled the hiring practice as a breach of ethical standards and Spanish disability legislation.

In a statement, ADEE described the act as one that “violates current laws and fundamental ethical values” and vowed to take both legal and social action to “protect the dignity of people with disabilities.”

However, one of the performers involved has publicly defended their participation, telling Catalan radio station RAC1 that the work was voluntary and conducted respectfully. “No one disrespected us,” the performer said. “We’re normal people who dedicate ourselves to what we love doing in an absolutely legal way.”

The performer criticized ADEE, accusing the group of undermining entertainers with dwarfism without providing alternative job opportunities or training. “Why can’t we do what we do?” they asked. “We dance, we do magic… All this fuss is only because it was Lamine Yamal’s party.”

Yamal, who returned to preseason training with Barcelona the day after the event, is coming off a stellar season in which he helped the Catalan giants secure a treble—winning LaLiga, the Copa del Rey, and the Spanish Supercopa. The Spanish international has already made over 100 appearances for the club and scored 25 goals.

Cyber Security Authority outdoors Edem as Ambassador for Safer Digital Ghana Campaign

0

The Cyber Security Authority (CSA) on Wednesday, July 16, unveiled one of Ghana’s secular musicians, known in entertainment circles as Edem, as an ambassador for its flagship awareness programme at the agency’s office in Airport City, Accra.

The Authority is the state agency mandated to build a resilient digital ecosystem and regulate cybersecurity activities in Ghana.

Known as the Safer Digital Ghana Campaign, the nationwide initiative aims to promote online safety and cybersecurity awareness among Ghanaians.

The campaign seeks to educate citizens on the importance of cybersecurity and provide them with the necessary skills to protect themselves from cyber threats. It is expected to reach various campuses, including Senior High Schools.

It also aims to promote cybersecurity best practices across all age groups and combat cybercrime and digital threats, including phishing, scams, misinformation, online blackmail, and data breaches.

Additionally, the campaign is designed to enhance digital resilience among individuals, schools, communities, and institutions, and to raise awareness of the Cybersecurity Act, 2020 (Act 1038).

With the increasing use of digital technologies in Ghana, the Cyber Security Authority (CSA) recognizes the urgent need to promote a culture of cybersecurity awareness and responsibility among citizens.

The Safer Digital Ghana Campaign will focus on several key areas, including:

  • Educating citizens on the risks associated with online activities and providing tips on how to stay safe online.
  • Equipping citizens with the necessary skills to effectively use digital technologies and protect themselves from cyber threats.
  • Encouraging the reporting of cybercrime incidents and providing citizens with the resources to do so.

Speaking at the launch, the Director-General of the Cyber Security Authority, Mr. Divine Selase Agbeti, highlighted the importance of the campaign, stating that it will play a crucial role in reducing cybercrime in Ghana.

He emphasized that cybersecurity is not the sole responsibility of institutions, but rather, every Ghanaian must take an active role in protecting themselves and their communities online. He added that the campaign is anchored by a partnership with Edem, known in private life as Denning Edem Hotor.

Explaining why Edem was the obvious choice for the campaign, Mr. Divine Selase stated that the CSA’s strategic selection of Edem as a brand ambassador brings star power, influence, and cultural connection to the campaign—particularly among Ghana’s youth and digital-native generation.

He added that Edem is a respected public figure with an authentic passion for digital advocacy.

The CSA is urging all Ghanaians to participate in the campaign and take proactive steps to protect themselves from cyber threats. By working together, we can create a safer and more secure digital environment for everyone.

The focus of the campaign is on four target groups, with appropriate topics tailored for each:

  • Children’s Campaign: Topics include Cyberbullying, Digital Footprint, Password Hygiene, and Parental Control.
  • General Public: Topics cover Online Scams, Social Engineering, Phishing, Account Takeovers, and Fake News.
  • Businesses: Focus areas include Supply Chain Risks, Email Compromise, and Backup and Recovery Plans.
  • Government Agencies: Key topics include Insider Threats, Threat Intelligence Sharing, and Incident Reporting.

Campaign messages have also been translated into various local languages to make them more accessible and easier for people to understand.

“The Cyber Security Authority is committed to promoting cybersecurity awareness and protecting Ghanaians from cyber threats. We believe that by working together, we can create a safer and more secure digital environment for everyone.”

In an interview after the signing of the partnership document, Edem stated that the country cannot afford to overlook the growing threat of cybercrime, as it puts both businesses and individuals at risk.

He explained that the campaign aims to empower every Ghanaian to take active steps to safeguard themselves online.

He added that, as a brand ambassador, he has dedicated himself to the success of the programme.

“Our shared vision is to make Ghanaians recognise that cybersecurity is not a technical concern but a personal duty, societal obligation, and national priority, so together we can make it more secure and digitally empowered,” said Edem.

FDA Approves Samples, But Experts Warn of Widespread Gaps in Ghana’s Food Safety

While the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) regularly approves samples of food items for public consumption, health experts say these isolated checks do not reflect the true state of Ghana’s food system.

From open-market meat vendors to unregulated street kitchens, food safety enforcement remains uneven — creating hidden risks for millions of Ghanaians who rely on roadside meals daily

Data compiled by the World Health Organization and national health agencies reveals a troubling story:

-626,000 Ghanaians are estimated to suffer from foodborne illnesses annually.

-Approximately 298,100 are hospitalized, and 90,000 lives are lost — figures that equate to roughly 14% of all national hospital admissions.

-The economic toll exceeds US$70 million per year, largely due to healthcare costs and lost productivity.

From 2013 to 2021, Ghana officially recorded 1,914 cases of mass food poisoning, with at least 36 fatalities.

Globally, foodborne illnesses kill 420,000 people each year, according to the WHO. Africa bears a disproportionate share, and Ghana’s contribution to those figures is a stark reminder that regulation is not synonymous with protection.

At the heart of the issue is the FDA’s reliance on pre-market sample testing, a process in which manufacturers or importers submit select units for analysis. Once these pass the threshold for safety or quality, the product is cleared for mass distribution.

But once products hit markets — from supermarkets in Accra to kiosks in Kasoa — the FDA’s scrutiny effectively ends.

Unlike regulatory regimes in the U.S., UK, or even parts of Asia where post-market surveillance is routine and enforced, Ghana does not conduct consistent random testing of food already on shelves. In short: the public eats what the FDA approved on paper, not necessarily what was packaged in reality.

Responsibility is fragmented. While the FDA handles safety, the Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) focuses on technical standards. This siloed approach creates room for both agencies to pass the blame when things go wrong — leaving consumers dangerously unprotected.

Investigative reporting by Accra Street Journal and SKB JOURNAL have brought to light numerous cases of food adulteration and contamination:

-Expired fruit juices and counterfeit tomato paste remain fixtures in markets across the country.

-A 2023 case in Oyibi saw one death and 53 hospitalizations linked to spoiled food.

-Cholera outbreaks traced to food contamination remain frequent in urban poor communities.

-The use of harmful pesticides and unregulated food dyes remains widespread, with no centralized tracking of chronic exposure.

Despite the visible risks, regulatory field checks are rare, and most inspections focus on street vendors’ permits — not what’s actually being served.

Some efforts exist. A pilot food surveillance program launched in Adentan in 2015 showed promise — but was never expanded nationwide. According to internal documents reviewed by Accrastreetjournal.com and the SamBoad Publishing Ltd, both the FDA and GSA suffer from chronic understaffing and funding constraints, with most enforcement resources concentrated in Accra.

Regional testing labs remain under-equipped, and food-safety infrastructure at the local government level is virtually nonexistent.

While both agencies claim to coordinate through the Ghana Health Service, sources inside the FDA concede that “follow-through is minimal unless there’s media attention or a mass casualty event.”

The cost of Ghana’s regulatory apathy is not just public health — it’s public trust. In a country striving to industrialize and expand exports, a reputation for weak safety oversight threatens both domestic confidence and international trade credibility.

Consumers today face rising costs, unclear labels, and little reassurance about the origin or safety of what they’re eating. Food safety is not merely a regulatory checkbox — it is a matter of national stability.

At Accra Street Journal supervised by Samuel Kwame Boadu, we believe public safety should not be sample-based. Ghana’s food regulation strategy is built on outdated assumptions: that one product tested in a lab guarantees nationwide safety. That is not only misleading — it is life-threatening.

Until Ghana shifts from a sample-certification model to market-level enforcement, the FDA and GSA will remain watchdogs with dulled teeth. And Ghanaians will continue to pay the price — with their wallets, their dignity, and too often, their lives.

It’s time the agencies earn the trust stamped on every product they approve. Because when it comes to food, safety should be more than a seal — it should be a standard.
