ORAL has arrogated to itself powers they don’t have

Member of Parliament of Suame, John Darko Member of Parliament of Suame, John Darko

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament of Suame, John Darko, has raised concerns about actions of the Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) Committee, asserting that it has overstepped its boundaries.

He also questioned the legitimacy of its decisions, noting that the committee has taken on powers it does not possess and describing its actions as questionable.

“And listen, this so-called committee has arrogated to themselves powers they don’t have, okay? We need to question every move they make,” John Darko said in a video shared on X by JoyNews on January 16, 2025.

John Darko also expressed disapproval of the committee’s activities, particularly prior to the swearing-in of President John Dramani Mahama.

“But I wouldn’t have any problem with it if he did it after he was sworn in. Yes, I wouldn’t. But before he was sworn in, he didn’t have the power to do that. That is what we are saying,” he said.

The MP further criticised the committee’s approach, suggesting that any outcomes derived from its current foundation would be basically flawed.

“In the end, they are saying they will prepare every document and go and give it to the president. If you understand that, you know what is referred to. It’s going to be a fruit from a poisoned tree. The fruit of a poisoned tree. The foundation is wrong. Whatever comes out of it will be wrong as well,” he asserted.

A total of 206 people from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have submitted their applications for the positions of Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) in the Northern Region.

These applications represent 16 constituencies within the region.

The Northern Regional branch of the NDC has grouped the applicants into four groups, with vetting scheduled to take place from January 18 to January 21, 2025, at the Northern Regional Coordinating Council in Tamale.

In a statement, NDC General Secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, urged the vetting committee to take into account customary, geographical, and ethnic balance during the vetting process.

“Due consideration must be given to the customary, geographical, and ethnic composition of each district to ensure a balanced distribution of political power and influence. This approach aims to foster unity and rally the entire district around a common developmental agenda,” he emphasized.

Mr. Kwetey also cautioned that the competence and relevant experience of each applicant should be critically assessed, as these attributes are essential for effectively managing the complexities associated with the office of an MMDCE.

Mahama Appoints Muslim To Replace Sammi Awuku At NLA

0

In a move that has sparked controversy, President John Dramani Mahama has appointed a Muslim to head the National Lottery Authority (NLA).

The appointment, which took effect from January 15, 2025, has been met with public backlash on social media, with many criticizing the decision as being against the Islamic faith.
Muslims are generally against gambling and the NDC made fetish about Muslims sensitivity to such acts.

According to a statement from the Office of the President, Mohammed Abdul-Salam was appointed as the Acting Chief Executive Officer of the NLA, pending receipt of the constitutionally required advice of the Board of the Authority, given in consultation with the Public Services Commission.

The appointment has raised eyebrows, as many have questioned the wisdom of appointing a Muslim to head an institution that deals with gambling, which is considered haram (forbidden) in Islam.

The public’s reaction on social media has been overwhelmingly negative, with many expressing their disappointment and frustration with the appointment.

Some have even called for the appointment to be revoked, citing concerns about the potential conflict of interest and the impact on the Muslim community.

Akufo-Addo Faces Backlash as Joy News Poll Exposes Alleged Failures in NPP Leadership

0

A Joy News survey conducted through social media platforms has pointed to former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as the primary reason for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) defeat in the December 2024 elections, as reported by Adomonline.

Respondents highlighted his administration’s harsh economic policies, perceived nepotism, corruption, and the arrogance of his appointees as key factors contributing to the party’s loss.

The survey sought to understand public sentiments regarding the NPP’s unexpected loss in both presidential and parliamentary elections.

Many respondents criticized Akufo-Addo’s leadership, particularly his handling of economic policies and his reluctance to act decisively on public grievances.

A significant portion of the criticism centered around economic policies such as the e-levy, betting tax, COVID-19 levy, and poor debt management strategies.

Respondents argued that these policies imposed severe economic hardships on Ghanaians and alienated even the party’s core supporters.

Additionally, Akufo-Addo was accused of shielding his cousin, former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, despite mounting public and parliamentary pressure to remove him.

This decision, respondents claimed, portrayed the administration as unresponsive to public concerns and deepened discontent within the party.

The former President also faced backlash for instances of perceived arrogance, such as allegedly instructing chiefs to stand to greet him.

Respondents viewed such actions as disrespectful to traditional authorities, further eroding public trust.

The survey revealed that internal dissatisfaction within the NPP also played a significant role. Respondents claimed that Akufo-Addo’s refusal to heed advice and make timely changes in his government fostered apathy among party members.

This inaction was said to have denied deserving members opportunities and fueled dissatisfaction at the grassroots level.

Apart from leadership issues, respondents criticized appointees within Akufo-Addo’s government for their alleged arrogance and inaccessibility.

Many accused them of being disconnected from the electorate, leading to further disaffection.

Corruption scandals under his administration also resurfaced, with respondents referencing Akufo-Addo’s reputation as a “clearing agent” for exonerating accused appointees without thorough investigations.

The neglect of key projects in NPP strongholds, particularly in the Ashanti, Western, and Bono/Ahafo regions, was another significant point of contention.

Respondents cited unfulfilled promises, such as the Suame Interchange, as missed opportunities to strengthen voter loyalty.

Mahama appoints Mohammed Abdul-Salam as Ag. CEO of NLA

President John Mahama has appointed the former Northern Regional Secretary of the National Democratic Congress, Mohammed Abdul-Salam, as the Acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Lottery Authority (NLA).

The appointment was made in accordance with Article 195(1) of the Constitution and Section 45(1) of the National Lotto Act, 2006 (Act 722).

This was announced in a release issued by the Secretary to the President on Wednesday, January 15, 2025.

According to the statement, the appointment is pending the Constitutionally required advice of the Board of the Authority, provided in consultation with the Public Services Commission.

It further indicated that the appointment takes effect from Wednesday, January 15, 2025.

The appointment follows the resignation of Samuel Awuku as the Director-General of the NLA on January 13, 2025.

In a formal letter addressed to President John Mahama, Mr Awuku expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to serve as Director-General since his appointment in August 2021 by the former president, Nana Akufo-Addo.

Mr Awuku, now a Member of Parliament emphasised his commitment to his new parliamentary responsibilities and requested the appointment of a successor to ensure a seamless transition at the NLA.

Can the president-elect meet Ghana’s high expectations?

Ghana’s former President John Mahama won last month’s elections by a landslide but he will be under enormous pressure to meet the expectations of voters as he assumes office.

After more than three years of economic misery, Ghanaians want a quick fix.

Mahama promised to create jobs and tackle corruption but that will be easier said than done.

He swept back to power after eight years in opposition, running what political analyst Nansata Yakubu described as a “masterclass” in campaigning.

Mahama defeated Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia by 56.6% of votes to 41.6% to notch up the biggest margin of victory by a candidate in 24 years.

His party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), also managed to land an overwhelming majority in parliament, securing 183 seats out of 276.

They are one seat short of the two-thirds majority needed to pass laws and approve budgets and contracts without the vote of MPs from the other side of the political divide.

The result of one parliamentary seat is yet to be declared because of discrepancies. Four other seats are being challenged in court by the NDC.

But voter turnout was lower than in the 2020 election, especially in some of the heartlands of Bawumia’s New Patriotic Party (NPP), suggesting some people there – disillusioned with its performance in government – stayed at home.

As Mahama’s supporters celebrated his victory, Belinda Amuzu – a teacher in the northern city of Tamale, a stronghold of Mahama – summed up their hopes.

“I’m expecting the new government to change the economy, so that the hardship will come down. He should also prosecute corrupt officials so that it will be a lesson to others,” she told the BBC.

“The hardship” has become a common phrase in Ghana since the economy hit rock-bottom in 2022, causing a cost-of-living crisis that shredded Bawumia’s reputation as an “economic whizz-kid” – and led to his defeat at the hands of Mahama.

However, during his state of the nation address on Friday, outgoing President Nana Akufo Addo said he was leaving behind a recovered economy.

“We are handing over the country with gross international reserves of almost $8bn (£6.4bn). This is more than the $6.2bn my administration inherited in 2017,” he said.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has disbursed about $1.9bn to support the country’s economic recovery since Ghana signed onto the programme in 2022.

However, opposition MPs disagree with Akufo Addo’s assessment.

“The people of Ghana have already given their verdict on the true state of the nation and that verdict was very clear. Economic hardship, huge debt overhang, high youth unemployment, hopelessness and more,” said minority MP Emmanuel Armah Kofi Boah.

Ghanaian economist Prof Godfred Bokpin told the BBC the challenges facing the next government were huge.

“What Ghana needs right now is credible leadership, lean government and efficiency in public service delivery. Without that, there cannot be a future,” he said.

Mahama has promised to bring down the size of the cabinet from more than 80 to around 60, but Prof Bokpin argued it should be even smaller while political analyst Dr Kwame Asah-Asante stressed the need for appointments to be on merit rather than loyalty.

Mahama was flanked by former Education Minister Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, who is set to become Ghana’s first female vice-president.

Dr Yakubu said her appointment was not one of “tokenism” and she was not someone who could be “manipulated”.

“We have a fantastic first female vice-president in Prof Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang,” she told the BBC Focus on Africa podcast.

Prof Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang helped John Mahama achieve a landslide victory

Mahama served his first four-year term as president after winning in 2012, but lost his re-election bid in 2016 as Nana Akufo-Addo rose to power with Bawumia as his running-mate.

Dr Yakubu said Mahama contested the 2016 election on his track record in building roads, schools and hospitals but voters rejected him, as their mantra then was: “We don’t eat infrastructure.”

But, she said, during the Covid pandemic voters came to appreciate the infrastructure his government had built, especially hospitals.

This – along with the fact that the economy had plunged into a deep crisis under the current government, forcing it to seek a $3bn (£2.4bn) bailout from the IMF – led to Mahama being re-elected, Dr Yakubu added.

She told the BBC that Mahama would now be expected to fulfil his campaign promise to create jobs in order to bring down the unemployment rate of almost 15%, and to ease the cost-of-living crisis by scrapping some taxes – or what Ghanaians call “nuisance taxes”.

Mahama has promised to make Ghana a “24-hour economy” through the creation of night-time jobs in both the public and private sectors. He said he would give businesses tax incentives to stay open at night and reduce electricity prices for them.

But his critics have doubts, pointing out that Ghana plunged into its worst electricity crisis during his first term and the power cuts were so bad that Mahama joked at the time that he was known as “Mr Dumsor” – “dum” means “off” and “sor” means “on” in the local Twi language.

He has pledged to abolish several taxes – including the much-criticised electronic levy on mobile transactions and the one on the carbon emissions produced by petrol or diesel-powered vehicles.

Prof Bokpin said he doubted the Mahama administration would be able to fulfil its promises.

“They have not done the cost-benefit analysis. There’s no budgetary space to translate those promises into actuals,” he said.

Prof Bokin believes that complete economic recovery and growth will take a long time.

He said: ”If you’re talking about economic transformation and inclusive productivity growth, you’re looking at probably 15 years and beyond of doing the right things conistently.

“In Ghana we are unable to do the right thing consistently for long. We do the right things in between elections and then we mess up.”

But Mahama is confident he will prove his critics wrong, saying he intends to renegotiate the conditions of the IMF loan so money is freed up for “social intervention programmes” in a country where 7.3 million people live in poverty.

In an interview ahead of the election, Mahama told the BBC the IMF wanted “a certain balance” in government finances.

“If you’re able to cut expenditure, and you’re able to increase revenue and increase non-tax revenue coming in, you’ll be able to create a balance,” he said.

Ghanaians are hoping that food prices will drop under the new government

Dr Asah-Asante said Mahama’s experience as former president would stand him in good stead to navigate Ghana through choppy waters.

“Of course, he is likely to encounter difficulties, but he has what it takes to turn things around,” the analyst added.

Apart from the economy, corruption is one of the biggest issues facing Ghana but not everyone is convinced that Mahama will be able to tackle the scourge.

Mahama’s previous stint in government – as vice-president and president – was plagued by corruption allegations, although he has consistently denied any wrongdoing.

In 2020, a UK court had found that aviation giant Airbus had used bribes to secure contracts with Ghana for military planes between 2009 and 2015.

An investigation was then started in Ghana, but the Office of the Special Prosecutor, in a decision announced just months before the election, concluded there was no evidence that Mahama was involved in any corrupt activities himself.

The outgoing government has also been dogged by corruption allegations, including over the purchase of ambulance spare parts at a cost of $34.9m and a controversial national cathedral project in which $58m has been spent without any progress in building it.

Mahama promised his government would tackle corruption, and ensure that officials were prosecuted for wrongdoing.

“We are thinking about special courts,” he told the BBC.

Mahama has already set up what he calls Operation Recover All Loot (Oral), aimed at investigating state funds and assets allegedly stolen by outgoing government officials.

Dr Asah-Asante said Mahama should demand financial accountability from the outgoing government during a handover phase so that “whatever has gone wrong, he will be able to right” as soon as his government takes office next month.

The analyst added that Mahama, who will be inaugurated on Tuesday when President Akufo-Addo steps down after his two terms in office, had no choice but to meet the expectations of Ghanaians – or else they would “punish his government the way they have punished the NPP”.

Mahama succinctly acknowledged this in his victory speech, saying: “Expectations of Ghanaians are very high, and we cannot afford to disappoint them.

“Our best days are not behind us; our best days are ahead of us. Forward ever – backwards never.”

L-R: Former President Nana Akufo-Addo and President John Mahama at the Nayiri’s palace L-R: Former President Nana Akufo-Addo and President John Mahama at the Nayiri’s palace

President John Dramani Mahama is drawing praises from a section of the public for his visit to Bawku and Nalerigu as part of efforts to find a permanent solution to the Bawku chieftaincy crisis.

One picture from Mahama’s visit to the Nayiri’s palace in Nalerigu is particularly earning him more admiration from the public.

The president was captured quietly sitting on a plastic chair as he was being addressed by Nayiri-Naa Bohugu Mahami Abdulai Sheriga.

This image stands in sharp contrast to the visuals from a similar visit by former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, who travelled to the Nayiri’s palace with his ‘special’ presidential chair.

Following Mahama’s visit, visuals of Akufo-Addo’s visit to the same location have also gone viral.

These visuals show former President Akufo-Addo addressing the Nayiri with his presidential chair, which was transported from Accra, positioned behind him.

It is worth noting that former President Akufo-Addo was heavily criticised for transporting the chair to every public event he attended in the country, with many pointing to the costs involved in its transportation.

The Vice President of the Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA), John Ansah, has credited former Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kwesi Nyantakyi for paving the way for Ghanaian football to gain recognition from the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

This week, reports confirmed that the current GFA President, Kurt Okraku, has filed his nomination to contest for a position on the CAF Executive Committee in the elections scheduled for March 2025.

Ansah believes this opportunity is largely due to the groundwork laid by Nyantakyi.

In an interview with Happy FM, Ansah praised Nyantakyi for being a trailblazer in ensuring CAF’s engagement with Ghanaian football.

“Kwesi Nyantakyi paved the way, and that got CAF to monitor football proceedings within the country. So, whenever you perform well and your zone acknowledges your efforts, you’ll be rewarded. This wouldn’t just be a plus for the president but for the country as a whole,” Ansah stated.

Reports indicate that with Djibril Hamidou, President of the Niger Football Association and current WAFU Zone B representative on the CAF Executive Committee, contesting for a position on the FIFA Council, Kurt Okraku is expected to run unopposed for the CAF EXCO seat.

Mahama Ayariga Will Ensure Harmonious Relations In Parliament – NDC Cadre

0

Alhaji Mohammed Mashood, Member of the Zongo Caucus in the Upper East Region

The nomination of the Member of Parliament representing the Bawku Central Constituency in the Upper East Region, Mahama Ayariga has resulted in some separate jubilations in various suburbs of the constituency.

The Bawku MP has enjoyed so much support from the constituency, just as the National Democratic Congress since 2004, and therefore, jubilations are expected, especially, when the electorates see the nomination as a reward for their loyalty to the ruling government.

A member of the Mahama Ayariga Campaign team and member of the Upper East Regional Zongo Caucus, Alhaji Mohammed Mashood in an exclusive interview with the Daily Guide said Hon. Mahama Ayariga’s nomination is very appropriate, considering his experience in parliament and politics in general.

“He is solid and one of the best choices the NDC could have made. I look forward to his leadership of the Majority Caucus in Parliament. Hon. Ayariga is principled and disciplined in thought and speech. A brilliant choice for the Majority leader position and “leader of Government Business” in Parliament.”

Earlier, this year, Alhaji Mohammed Mashood had called on President Mahama to reciprocate the support from the Bawku Traditional Area and the Upper East Region with strategic appointment and commit himself to the return of peace to the Bawku area.

President John Dramani Mahama on January 14, 2025, paid a working visit to the Bawku Municipality to discuss possible ways to return lasting peace to the area.

The President’s visit, according to Alhaji Mashood is a show of commitment to the development of Bawku and the residents.

“It is our prayer that the government moves fast to put in place measures to start the journey towards a lasting peace for boost business confidence. Business is not booming like some years past, all because of the situation we find ourselves in, in the Bawku Municipality.”

Alhaji Mashood called on other persons appointed by the President to occupy various positions, to have their constituencies and the country at heart, and to always do what is right at all times.

“This is what Cadres do; that is the spirit behind the NDC. As a former Executive member and a Cadre, what I know is that, if you are given a position to occupy, it is for the good of the people and the country as a whole. Political positions are not for enjoyment, it is an opportunity to serve, that is the Cadre spirit and every NDC member must know this.”

The Upper East Region as at the time of filing this report on Thursday, January 16, has had three persons appointed by the President to serve in his government.

The nominees are the member of Parliament for the Bolgatanga East Constituency, Dr. Dominic Ayine, the Member of Parliament for the Bawku Central Constituency, and the NDC’s longest-serving party executive in the Upper East Region, Donatus Akamugri, who will serve as the Upper East Regional Minister.

OMCs explain current fuel situation; allay fears of impending shortage

0

The Chamber of Oil Marketing Companies (COMAC) has shot down reports suggesting an imminent fuel shortage in Ghana.

It assures the public that there is no cause for alarm. In a statement, COMAC clarified that any risk of fuel shortage has been effectively mitigated.

The statement addressed media reports that misrepresented comments by the Chief Executive Officer of COMAC, Dr. Riverson Oppong over a looming fuel crisis.

COMAC explained that Dr. Oppong’s remarks were meant to update stakeholders on a temporary reduction in petrol stock due to operational factors including the suspension of refining activities at the Sentuo Oil Refinery.

“We assure the public that this is no looming fuel shortage, as adequate supplies are currently available at the ports, with additional volumes expected to further cushion the market”, the statement mentioned.

According to COMAC, the current stock of petrol is sufficient to cover approximately three weeks of national demand.

Additionally, ongoing import plans show that vessels are actively discharging fuel, with more waiting at anchorage to offload.

This proactive import strategy has helped stabilise supply and eliminate any immediate risks of shortages.

The nominee, who currently serves as the Ashanti Regional Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), is being celebrated for his youthful energy and potential to bring positive change to the region.

Most residents who spoke to the Ghana News Agency, after President John Dramani Mahama, made the announcement, said his nomination was in the right direction.

According to them, it was a strategic decision by President Mahama to address longstanding challenges in the region, particularly in infrastructure and youth unemployment.

“There are a lot of people who support the NDC, but he sees Dr. Amoakohene as a young person who works, understands the youth, and can work assiduously for the good people of the Ashanti region,” Mr Kofi Nkansah, a youth activist stated.

Residents in the Ashanti region have identified key projects they expected the incoming Regional Minister to prioritise for early completion.

They included the stalled second phase of the Kejetia-Central Market Redevelopment Project, the Suame Inter-change, other road networks and many hospital projects, which have been uncompleted for a long time.

“My problem is the youth because I get worried when I see young people selling on the streets.

He, being a young person, I know he will listen to some of their concerns and together we can move forward,” Mr Nkansah said.

Dr. Amoakohene’s appointment has been met with optimism with many hoping his leadership would mark the beginning of transformative development in the region.

Armah-Kofi Buah calls for urgent action on strange fish disease in Kamgbunli

Deputy Majority Leader, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah Deputy Majority Leader, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah

The Deputy Majority Leader in Parliament, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has expressed concerns over a strange fish disease wreaking havoc at Kamgbunli, a fishing community in the Western Region.

Sharing his thoughts in a post on his X page, on Thursday, January 16, 2025, the Member of Parliament of Ellembele emphasised the urgent need for swift action to address the crisis.

“I am deeply troubled by the alarming reports emerging from Kamgbunli, a town in my beloved Ellembele constituency, where a mysterious fish disease is wreaking havoc on the livelihoods of our fishermen and posing a significant threat to the health of our community.

“The situation in Kamgbunli is dire: fish caught in the Ebi River are exhibiting severe skin infections, making them unsuitable for sale or consumption.

Additionally, the river has taken on a noxious odor and an unsettling color, heightening concerns about potential health hazards for our residents”, he narrated.

While commending the temporary ban on fishing activities in the affected rivers as a necessary precaution, Armah-Kofi Buah stressed the importance of identifying the source of the contamination.

He also urged immediate action from the relevant authorities.

“I urgently implore the Western Regional Fisheries Commission to promptly gather samples from the impacted fish and the river. Any delay in taking these crucial steps only prolongs the suffering of the Kamgbunli community,” he noted.

He further called on key governmental bodies to intervene.

“I call upon the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, and other pertinent agencies to collaborate and offer the requisite support to investigate and address this pressing crisis,” he urged.

Over the past month, fishermen in the area have reported a worrying trend as fish caught in the Ebi River having strange skin, red, swollen lesions that escalate into gaping wounds.

I support scrapping of betting tax – Sammi Awuku

0

Former Director-General of the National Lottery Authority, Sammi Awuku Former Director-General of the National Lottery Authority, Sammi Awuku

Former Director-General of the National Lottery Authority (NLA), Sammi Awuku, has welcomed the decision by the Mahama administration to scrap the betting tax.

Mr. Awuku, who has been a vocal critic of the tax even during the tenure of the previous administration, described it as a counterproductive measure that has failed to yield positive results in many jurisdictions.

“I’m excited that the betting tax is going to be scrapped,” Awuku said during an interview with Daily Guide.

“I’ve been consistent about it, even during the NPP era, and I said it is something that personally has not worked in many of the jurisdictions anytime you have introduced taxes on betting,” he added.

Highlighting his concerns, Awuku elaborated on the counterproductive nature of the tax, especially concerning government-owned institutions like the National Lottery Authority (NLA).

“Lottery was part of the betting tax. The National Lottery Authority, for instance, is owned by the government, and apart from the things that they do, at the end of the day, they must also contribute to the national kitty,” he explained.

He pointed out the dilemma posed by the tax, which made illegal betting operators more attractive to players.

“If the government is taxing itself, then what will happen is that the underground operators that we call the illegal operators, they will become emboldened. If you play with the government, you attract a 10% tax on what you win. But if you play with the illegals, you get your full money. So, I told them that, for me, it was counterproductive,” he added.

Awuku’s criticism extended beyond the tax policy itself to what he described as inconsistencies within the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) government. He noted that earlier comments by the Finance Minister-designate had gone beyond scrapping the tax to suggesting that betting and lottery activities should be banned entirely.

“The difficulty with the NDC position is that earlier the Finance Minister-designate, in time past, had said that it should be banned—not just the tax being scrapped,” he said.

Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, however, at his vetting, explained the context for making such a suggestion was different, arguing former Minister of Information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah had stated the tax was to discourage the youth from betting.

This Ghanaian bettor urges President Mahama to scrap the Betting Tax This Ghanaian bettor urges President Mahama to scrap the Betting Tax

A Ghanaian bettor has urged President John Dramani Mahama to abolish the Betting Tax, citing its negative impact on their finances.

According to him, the 10% deduction from bet winnings affects their earnings, as they don’t receive the full amount they’re supposed to get.

The individual believes that scrapping the Betting Tax will help Mahama maintain the support of the youth, who contributed to his victory in the 2024 general elections.

Speaking in an interview with Benjamin Sackey on GhanaWeb TV’s Sports Debate program, the man warned that the NDC will suffer consequences if President Mahama does not honor his promise.

“The tax should be totally scrapped to allow us to earn our rightful income. This will significantly improve our living situation. President Mahama should abolish it without hesitation.

“If he does, the youth will always support him. However, if he fails to cancel it, the consequences will be similar to what happened to the NPP,” he said.

Meanwhile, Minister-designate for Finance Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has promised to abolish the Betting Tax, citing its ineffectiveness in preventing youth involvement in betting.

Ato Forson clarified that removing the tax won’t significantly impact Ghana’s economy, considering the revenue it generates.

Don’t Travel Abroad For Greener Pastures When You Are 40 Years And Above – NDA Advises Ghanaians

0

Ghanaian content creator based in the United States, Naana Donkor Arthur, has advised Ghanaians aged 40 and above to reconsider their decisions to travel abroad in search of greener pastures.

Speaking in a recent interview, NDA, as she is popularly called, highlighted the physical and emotional toll of relocating to foreign countries at an advanced age.

According to her, people above 40 often lack the stamina required to endure the rigorous demands of working long hours in foreign countries.

“It becomes increasingly challenging to keep up with the workload abroad, especially for those who are unfamiliar with the high-pressure environment,” she explained.

Instead, Naana Donkor Arthur encouraged individuals in this age group to focus on building better opportunities for themselves within Ghana. She emphasized the importance of leveraging their existing skills, resources, and networks to improve their lives locally rather than enduring the hardships that come with “starting over” abroad.

“At 40 and above, you should be focusing on creating stability, building wealth, and leaving a legacy in your own country. Relocating to hustle in a foreign land at that age may not yield the outcomes you expect. If you travel abroad in your 20s or early 30s, you have better chance at succeeding that traveling in your 40s” she added.

Nine vie for MCE position in Asante-Akim South

0

Juaso (Ash), Jan. 16, GNA – Nine persons are vying to become the next Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Asante-Akim South as President John Dramani Mahama intensifies efforts to put together his government.

Following the revoking of the appointment of all former MCEs under former President Akufo-Addo’s government by President Mahama, various actors in the ruling party including some constituency executives of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have submitted their applications for the vacant position.

Among the executives seeking to lead the Municipal Assembly are Mr. Frank Antwi, Chairman, Mr. Akwasi Amponsah Akosah, Secretary, and Mr. Seth Asare Kumi, the Organiser.

Also in the race is Maame Sarfoah Appiah, the 2024 parliamentary candidate for the NDC, who is tipped by many as the frontrunner, having represented the party in the parliamentary race for two consecutive times.

Other contestants are from varied professional backgrounds who contributed to the party’s landslide victory in the 2024 general elections.

Interestingly, Maame Sarfoah is the only female aspirant among the lot, a development which brings to fore the perennial low participation of women in decision-making.

As to whether the gender equality equilibrium would play to her advantage in the keenly contested race, or not, that remained to be seen after the final nomination by the President.

Beyond the gender card, which seems to favour her, Maame Sarfoah has significantly increased the NDC’s parliamentary votes in the last two elections, cutting down a 16,000 gap in 2016 to 3,000 in 2024.

It is against this background that some party faithful, believe she could snatch the seat in 2028 if she becomes the MCE, which would put her in the position to implement the development agenda of the municipality.

Her contenders who have also played diverse roles in sustaining the party in opposition for the last eight years, also believe they deserve to be rewarded for their contributions to the party over the years.

Information gathered by the Ghana News Agency (GNA) indicates that the aspirants have intensified lobbying from the corridors of power in their quest to beat each other to the highest office in the municipality.

As they strive to catch the eye of the powers that be, the fact remains that the nomination of a candidate for the consideration of the Assembly is a sole prerogative of the President.

LilWin expresses concern over barbershop costs in Kumasi

0

Award-winning Kumawood actor Kwadwo Nkansah, also known as LilWin, has expressed his frustration over the high costs associated with running his new barbershop in Kumasi.

In December 2024, LilWin officially opened Wezzy Barbering Studios with a grand event to address the lack of professional barbers in the Offinso-Ahenekro community.

However, a month later, in an interview with ZionFelix, the actor highlighted the financial challenges of operating the barbershop, mentioning the significant expenses on items such as lights, mirrors, and other interior decorations.

“You can search the internet for the price of a barber chair. Some of them cost over $1,300. Even the lights cost $1,000, and the mirrors cost between $4,000 and $5,000.

“So owning a barbershop is not easy. I have spent a lot,” he said.

He noted that Wezzy Barbering Studios is a temporary setup to test the market, with plans to acquire more land and build a larger barbershop.

Since rising to fame in the Kumawood movie industry, LilWin has diversified his business ventures, including establishing the Great Minds International School, an ultra-modern educational institution in Offinso Ahenekro, as well as Weezy Empire Film Village in Kwamang-Boaman in Kumasi.

ACEP proposes for commercialisation of BOST, listing on GSE

ACEP claims that BOST has deviated from its primary responsibilities ACEP claims that BOST has deviated from its primary responsibilities

The Africa Centre for Energy Policy (ACEP) has joined calls for the commercialisation of the Bulk Oil Storage and Transportation Company (BOST) and its listing on the Ghana Stock Exchange.

The Centre highlights that BOST collects a margin of GHp12 per litre of petroleum to sustain its operations and maintain strategic reserves.

However, the think tank believes that BOST has not been fulfilling its core mandate.

ACEP further asserts that BOST has deviated from its primary responsibilities and now controls about 20 percent of the petroleum import market through the Gold-for-Oil program.

Additionally, BOST reportedly receives nearly GH¢600 million annually from margins on petroleum products while competing with private businesses that are subject to taxation.

During a media briefing on “Downstream Petroleum Products Taxation: A Call to Action” held on January 15, 2024, ACEP’s Policy Lead for Petroleum and Conventional Energy, Kodzo Yaotse, called for a reevaluation of BOST’s operations.

“The market we operate in today shows that we do not need BOST. Alternatively, if we are to keep BOST, we should commercialise it and list it on the stock exchange. This will ensure transparency and accountability in its operations while reducing the burden on consumers. That’s another GHp12 removed from payments,” he stated.

Man Utd legend Rio Ferdinand slams Partey over ‘mistake’ in North London Derby

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has criticized Thomas Partey for his poor defending in the lead-up to Tottenham Hotspur’s opening goal in the North London derby on Wednesday, January 15, 2025.

Ferdinand pointed out that Partey failed to close down a quick counterattack initiated by Pape Sarr.

“Partey didn’t want any part of that running against Sarr there. Your holding midfielder has to get across and slow that down,” Ferdinand said, as quoted by Football Insider.

Co-pundit Alistair Murdoch McCoist agreed with Ferdinand, stressing that Partey should have done more to contain the attack.

“That’s not good. He should be breaking his neck to cover that gap between the left-back and the left centre-back,” McCoist added.

The defensive lapse allowed Heung-Min Son to put Tottenham ahead. However, Arsenal equalized through an own goal before Partey redeemed himself with a brilliant tackle that led to Arsenal’s match-winning goal.

Meet the British-Nigerian designer attempting to break the Guinness World Record for largest sandal

Sanya made the sandal, which is 26 feet, 8.8 inches long, and 10 feet, 4.2 inches wide Sanya made the sandal, which is 26 feet, 8.8 inches long, and 10 feet, 4.2 inches wide

A British-Nigerian fashion designer has captured the world’s attention after creating an enormous sandal. Elizabeth “Liz” Sanya made the sandal measuring 10 feet, 4.2 inches wide and 26 feet, 8.8 inches long in an attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the largest sandal.

According to UPI, the designer spent 72 hours creating the massive clog-style sandal at Pixel Park in Lekki, Lagos, in Nigeria and completed her creation on January 4.

Her shoe was submitted to Guinness World Records as the world’s largest sandal. She hopes to break the previous record, which was set by a group of craftspeople from Municipio De Sahauyo, Mexico, who made a traditional sandal that was 24 feet, 5.31 inches long and 10 feet, 1.65 inches wide in 2016.

In a statement cited by Black Enterprise, Sanya said, “I’ll never be able to put into words what any of this means to me, I started designing shoes when I was 12, and by 14, I was selling them to fund a ‘habit’ I couldn’t afford.”

Sanya has long made a name for herself in the world of footwear design. She is famous for her ‘world’s blackest Air Forces’ and the ‘Sanya Clogs.’

She previously told the Notesphere, “When I design, I tend to propose questions and then answer hypothetically. So usually, the ‘functionality’ is a byproduct once the problem is solved.”

She also declared, “I really want to be that Trojan horse and bend the rules inside out. We need people on the inside to create the change we see on the outside.”

Sanya grew up a tomboy in an African household. According to her, one thing this taught her is that “if you stay true to who you are for long enough, people will rather change for you than for them. To have vision requires belief in something that isn’t physical yet. It’s a stubbornness and pride that what you want WILL come to pass.”

Nigerian celebrities, including Aboriomoh ‘Dremo’ Raymond, Phillip ‘Pheelz’ Moses, Peace ‘P.Priime’ Oredope, and Mayowa ‘Mayorkun’ Adewale was at the Lekki location to support Sanya during her recent record-breaking attempt.

“Believing in me is free, doubting me will cost you,” she wrote after attempting her latest record.

Mahama Ayariga

Mahama Ayariga, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Bawku Central, is set to replace Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson as the Majority Leader of the 9th Parliament.

This change follows Dr. Forson’s nomination by President John Dramani Mahama as the Minister of Finance-designate.

Mr. Ayariga’s appointment as Majority Leader has gained widespread attention, with many emphasizing his deep understanding of parliamentary rules and procedures.

As a lawyer and veteran lawmaker, he brings extensive experience and leadership to this critical role.

Having previously served as Minister of Information and Minister for Environment, Science, and Technology, Mr. Ayariga’s track record of public service further cements his suitability for this position.

His appointment is seen by some members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as a strategic move to maintain stability and effectiveness in parliamentary leadership.

Dr. Ato Forson’s new role as Minister of Finance-designate leaves a significant gap in the Majority Leader position.

Ayariga’s elevation is expected to ensure continuity and strong leadership within the government’s legislative agenda.

In addition to this development, other vacancies have emerged within the Majority bench leadership.

Governs Kwame Agbodza, currently serving as the Majority Chief Whip, has been nominated as the Minister of Roads and Highways-designate.

Similarly, Ahmed Ibrahim, the Majority Deputy Whip, has been nominated as the Minister-designate for Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs.

These changes reflect President Mahama’s efforts to realign his administration to address pressing national challenges while maintaining a strong and cohesive parliamentary team.

The nominees will now await parliamentary vetting and approval before officially assuming their new roles.

GUSA president calls for government aid amid funding crisis

0

President of the Ghana University Sports Association (GUSA), Shaibu Ibrahim Tanko, has urged the government to intervene due to the association’s funding issues.

Despite attempts to gain private sponsorship, GUSA has not succeeded.

GUSA is pivotal in promoting sports in higher education, managing events like the annual GUSA Games, and developing athletes for national and international levels.

The current GUSA Games are being hosted by the University of Cape Coast, concluding on January 18, 2025.

In an interview with Asempa FM, Tanko explained that GUSA’s main funding comes from membership fees from universities nationwide.

The lack of external sponsorship has restricted the association’s ability to grow its initiatives and improve sports at universities in Ghana.

“Our funding comes from universities. Each university contributes dues to GUSA.

” We lack sponsors. We’ve been seeking sponsors for a long time without success,” Tanko stated.

He compared Ghana’s situation to that of Kenya and Uganda, where government bodies significantly support university sports.

“We require government intervention. In countries like Kenya and Uganda, government institutions provide sponsorship,” Tanko stressed.

This plea from GUSA underscores the urgent need for more investment in sports facilities and development at both grassroots and tertiary levels to keep Ghana competitive internationally.
