Ghanaian rapper, Opanka, has disclosed that his two years stay in the United States had nothing to do with his music career.
Contrary to popular speculation, Opanka clarified his time in the States was just to further his education.
In a recent interview, the rapper, who has been making waves in the Ghanaian music industry for years, stated that his decision to prioritise his education over his music career is his commitment to personal growth and development.
“My two years living in the states had nothing to do with me putting my music career on hold. The power that social media or technology is carrying, you can travel out for shows and that’s why I travelled out.
“You could be in Ghana and people outside Ghana will be hearing your music, you could equally be outside the country and people here will hear it. Right now, let’s say you travel out and you post something on YouTube, it’s the same YouTube that you would watch it and when they are on digital stores too, it’s the same thing,” he stated.
Opanka added that he went to America for a concert and he got the opportunity to further his education.
“First of all, I went to America for an award show and a concert. The whole thing was supposed to take us a month. After the concert, I had the opportunity to go to school and I believe everyone knows that education is power.
“So, meaning the knowledge I will acquire from education, when I add it to my music, everything will be on a different level. As I’ve gotten that opportunity, I thought it was wise to do it and I could still do the music as I’m outside the country,” he added.
The Convention Peoples Party (CPP) has thrown its support behind the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government’s initiative to operationalize Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL), a task force led by North Tongu MP, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, to reclaim misappropriated state assets.
According to the CPP’s 2024 flagbearer, Nana Akosua Frimpomaa Kumankumah, ORAL is a commendable initiative by President John Dramani Mahama’s administration aimed at addressing the misuse and dissipation of state resources over the years.
Speaking on Accra-based CTV’s “OMAN GHANA NKUSUO” morning show co-hosted by Obaapa Yaa Titi and Odehyeeba Kofi Essuman on Monday, January 20, 2025, she commended the ORAL Chairman for his selfless dedication to the cause and urged him to extend the initiative to cover historical loot dating back to 1966—when the CPP government, led by Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, was overthrown in a coup.
Madam Kumankumah emphasized that following the 1966 coup, numerous CPP-owned properties were confiscated and repurposed for state use, including:
The Ministry of Information building in Accra The CPP’s Brong Ahafo Regional Office in Sunyani The CPP’s Central Regional Office in Cape Coast, now housing the Ghana Education Service.
She urged the ORAL task force to extend its mandate to recover these properties, emphasizing that the confiscation of CPP assets played a role in the party’s political suppression and ultimate criminalization following the coup.
While supporting the initiative, Madam Kumankumah cautioned NDC appointees, stating that ORAL would become a benchmark for accountability when the NDC eventually leaves office.
She warned against any misuse of public resources, emphasizing that history would judge all political officeholders by the same standards.
The CPP’s endorsement of ORAL adds momentum to the initiative as it seeks to recover lost national assets and promote transparency in governance.

play videoGoverns Kwame Agbodza is the Minister of Roads-designate
The Minister of Roads and Highways-designate, Governs Kwame Agbodza, has expressed concern over the country’s road sector debt, which currently stands at GH¢15 billion, encompassing both principal and accrued interest.
Appearing before the Appointments Committee on January 20, 2025, Agbodza provided a breakdown of the debts and their corresponding interests from 2017 to date, emphasising that the structure of contracts in Ghana has led to this alarming accumulation, failing to provide value for money for the government and contractors.
He detailed the debt figures as follows:
“The NPP government is leaving a minimum of GH¢100 million in commitments. What you should be worried about is that, as of today, certificates unpaid by the Government of Ghana amount to about GH¢20 billion. The Road Fund debt alone stands at about GH¢15 billion. If you take the indebtedness up to 2025, this debt is a significant concern,” he stated.
He elaborated further, “Look at these details: In 2018, we owed about GH¢113 million, and the interest on this amount has risen to GH¢665 million. For 2019, the interest on GH¢210 million is now GH¢960 million. In 2020, we owed GH¢424 million, and the interest has ballooned to GH¢1.5 billion. By 2021, the debt was GH¢616 million, and the current interest is GH¢1.69 billion. For GH¢693 million owed in 2022, the interest now stands at GH¢1.4 billion.”
Agbodza stressed the need for reforms in the way contracts are signed to prevent further escalation of debt.
“The question is, how do I explain to taxpayers in Adaklu that we owe GH¢113 million, yet we are paying GH¢665 million in interest? These issues concern all of us in the road sector. This is not money that has been thrown away, but rather a result of how contracts are written in this country. If someone raises a certificate and it isn’t paid on time, 30% interest accrues. This is why we are now paying GH¢15 billion in Road Fund debt alone,” he explained.
Agbodza proposed working closely with the Finance Minister if approved to address the inefficiencies in contract agreements and debt management.
“This cannot continue. It is not value for Ghana, nor is it value for the contractor. It is money being wasted. The way forward is to sit down with the Finance Minister and restructure this system,” he added.
play videoBlack Stars assistant coach, John Paintsil
Former Black Stars player Charles Taylor has claimed that John Paintsil would perform significantly better than Otto Addo as the Black Stars head coach.
Taylor argues that player management, rather than tactical expertise, is the most crucial factor in winning games.
Speaking on Angel TV, he suggested that if Otto Addo were unavailable, Paintsil would be more effective in motivating the players.
“John Paintsil can do the job better than Otto Addo if he is put in charge. Coaching isn’t just about a certain level of expertise, it’s about how you engage with the players, and that is key to winning games,” Taylor stated.
He continued, “It’s not just about the players you invite; otherwise, we would be winning our games. I’m not saying Paintsil is the perfect candidate, but in Otto’s absence, he could do a better job by motivating the players to beat teams that Otto Addo has struggled against.”
John Paintsil was appointed in March 2024 as an assistant coach under Otto Addo’s technical team. However, following a poor first year, the Ghana Football Association is reportedly considering a backroom staff reshuffle at the request of the head coach.

The Chairman of the Ministerial Vetting Committee in Parliament, Benard Ahiafor, has suspended today’s sitting following misunderstandings among Members of Parliament (MPs).

Anhwiaso (WN/R), Jan 20, GNA-Dr. Alhaji Ben Ali Seaman, former constituency organiser of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), in Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai has advised President John Dramani Mahama, not to repeat previous mistakes made during his first administration.
According to him, repeating such mistakes would be tantamount to total failure and disappointment of Ghanaians.
Alhaji Seaman mentioned, erratic power supply, unemployment, and poor management of the economy as some of the issues that did not go well in President Mahama’s previous administration.
He continued that Ghanaians were eager and yearning for the full implementation of the 24-hour Economy, Women’s Bank, Free Tertiary Education, Free admission for level 100 tertiary students and Free SHS to all private schools.
These were contained in a Press statement issued and copied the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Anhwiaso.
He indicated that Ghanaians were waiting for the scrapping the betting tax, E -Levy, and COVID tax as well as the stablisation of the Cedi to Dollar exchange rate and fuel prices.
He warned that individuals who would be favoured to serve in Mahama’s government should not be arrogant, self-centered, and disrespectful leaders.
Alhaji Seaman expressed concern about the NPP humiliating defeat in the 2024 polls and called for the revision of the selection of leaders from the National, Regional, and Constituency levels.
He also called for the party’s electoral college to be expanded to cover all card-bearing members to exercise their franchise. That, he noted, would enable the party members to elect dedicated leaders, selfless, and committed leaders to steer the affairs of the party.
Bereaved families of nine local miners who died during a violent confrontation with military officers at Anglogold Obuasi Gold Mine have gathered at the Obuasi Government Hospital to take delivery of the bodies.
The hospital authorities are finalising autopsy on the bodies before they are released to police for subsequent release to the families for the necessary rites.
Hospital authorities have confirmed a total of nine deaths, with eight injured persons sent to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.
There has been a heavy deployment of military officers at all entry and exit points of the mines.
Public and private schools in Obuasi, however, remain closed as authorities of the Ghana Education Service continue to monitor the security situation.
The incident occurred late on Saturday, January 18, 2025, around 11:00 PM, when a group of approximately 60 illegal miners breached the security fence and attempted to access the Deep Decline area of the mine.
The miners were reportedly armed with locally manufactured rifles, pump-action guns, knives, axes, gas cylinders, and other tools, and opened fire on the military personnel when confronted.
In self-defence, the soldiers returned fire, resulting in the fatalities with other illegal miners seriously injured. The remaining individuals fled the scene.
One soldier sustained injuries after being hit by pellets from a pump-action gun but has since received treatment. The soldiers retrieved six pump-action BB cartridges at the site.

Months after his resignation as the senior pastor of City of David Parish of RCCG, Region 20, Lagos, Pastor Idowu Iluyomade has started his own church.
LEADERSHIP gathered that the church, which is also based in Lagos, is named ‘Family Fellowship’.
Recall that Iluyomade was earlier suspended by the leadership of the RCCG for throwing an elaborate 60th birthday party for his wife,
Dr. Siju Iluyomade, shortly after the death of Herbert Wigwe, a member and financier of his parish.
The cleric was thereafter transferred to another parish of the church following the outcries that greeted the birthday bash.
Iluyomade was later moved to the Throne of Grace, Ebute Metta headquarters of the church after he was suspended for three months
He subsequently resigned his pastoral relationship with the RCCG and has been rumoured to begin a new ministry since then.

Whyte ready to fight Joshua
British heavyweight contender Dillian Whyte has declared his readiness to take on Anthony Joshua a second time, following the latter’s shock knockout loss to Daniel Dubois last September, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
The “Body Snatcher”, who lost their first encounter by seventh-round stoppage a decade ago, believes Joshua’s career is nearing its end.
“If he wants to fight, then all they’ve got to do is call me,” Whyte told Sky Sports.
“I’m always up for fighting AJ. No problem for me. However, personally, I think he’s finished.”
Whyte’s comments come days after WBC champion Tyson Fury announced his retirement following back-to-back losses to Oleksandr Usyk, potentially scuppering hopes of a long-awaited showdown with Joshua.
However, promoter Eddie Hearn believes Fury’s retirement announcement is merely a negotiating tactic.
“If you ever want to come back and get the max, you have to retire first, haven’t you? Someone then has to bring you out of retirement,” Hearn told iFL TV.
“I think he’ll want to fight again, I think he will get bored and he will know the British public want to see the AJ fight.”

The gospel singer’s current skin tone has sparked rumours of bleaching.
A video circulating on social media shows Florence looking noticeably slimmer than usual, with her hands appearing significantly darker than the rest of her body. This contrast has led to rumours of skin bleaching, with many questioning her current beauty regimen.
One comment read, “She doesn’t look like herself anymore. What happened to her vibrant and natural look?”
“The multi-coloured skin tone is a clear sign of bleaching. It’s so sad to see her like this.” Another added.

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has accused Bernard Ahiafor, Chairman of the Appointments Committee, of being rude during the vetting of ministerial nominees. The accusation came after Ahiafor asked Afenyo-Markin to withdraw the statement, “You and your colleagues have rudely intervened in my submission,” insisting that he take back his words.
The Politics disagreement arose during the vetting of Minister-designate for Roads and Highways, Kwame Governs Agbodza. A heated exchange unfolded when Afenyo-Markin attempted to make preliminary comments about the sacking of CEOs of state institutions. However, the Majority caucus blocked his efforts, arguing that the topic was outside the scope of the ministerial vetting process.
This led to a series of disagreements and delays.
In an attempt to resolve the matter, a brief five-minute suspension was called, but tensions remained high. Afenyo-Markin expressed frustration with his colleagues, including Chairman Ahiafor, accusing them of rude behavior and acting in bad faith. He pointed out that the meeting resumed without the Minority members, despite his earlier request to join after a caucus meeting.
Afenyo-Markin stated, “Chairman, don’t raise your voice. You suspended the sitting for five minutes.
You called me, and I told you I was meeting with my caucus. I would join you, but then you proceeded without me. I want to register my protest that this was done in bad faith.”
He continued, “This is not what we agreed upon. I was responding to a point of order when you rudely interrupted me and insisted you had made a ruling.
Please lower your voice, Chairman. All of your colleagues, including you, have been rude to me this morning. The frequency with which I am interrupted is unacceptable.”
After his outburst, Afenyo-Markin apologized to the Chair following objections to his remarks.
The Minister-Designate for Roads and Highways, Governs Kwame Agbodza, has revealed that the controversial E-Gate system at Kotoka International Airport (KIA) lacks a formal contract.
This revelation, made during his vetting in Parliament on Monday, January 20, raises serious questions about the procurement process and financial claims surrounding the project.
The E-Gate system, introduced as part of efforts to modernise operations at Ghana’s premier international airport, was reportedly set to cost the government a staggering $240 million.
However, the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) refuted these claims in a statement issued on December 19, 2024, dismissing the alleged cost as inaccurate.
Agbodza, who is also the Member of Parliament for Adaklu, provided additional details during his appearance before the Appointments Committee stating that the project was part of ongoing work by the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) and was initially intended to be implemented at no cost to the government.
The Minister-Designate explained that the GCAA had already been working on a similar system as part of its broader modernisation efforts. According to him, the E-Gate was meant to be developed as a complimentary feature, requiring no additional cost.
“If the government had listened to what I was saying, it wouldn’t have resulted in some of the embarrassment we saw at the airport when the former Vice President was trying to commission it. There is not even any contract for the E-Gate. There is no contract for the $1.7 million they were talking about.
“When I started talking, this project was already being implemented by the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority and the E-Gate was supposed to be done for free so when I started talking, they went and prepared a memo for it.”

Kuami Eugene has shared his heartfelt passion for supporting children and giving back to society, a mission deeply rooted in his own childhood experiences. The Highlife and Afrobeats star opened up about his journey, emphasizing how his humble beginnings shaped his desire to create joy for children, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds.
In an interview on Joy Prime, Kuami Eugene reflected on his upbringing. “I think every child deserves everything they can get in life. But then again, that’s not what’s happening,” he said. Raised by loving parents who lacked the resources for luxuries, Kuami recounted, “We used to live in the streets, so I didn’t get to do the children’s park or enjoy those childhood experiences.”
This difficult past has inspired the singer to ensure that children have access to joyful moments he never experienced. One way he plans to achieve this is through a special Christmas event designed to be fun and affordable for families. Explaining his vision, he said, “I told myself that if I get to a level where I can handle something like that, I’d try as much as possible to spend a day with all the kids and make it very affordable.”
For Kuami Eugene, the event is about giving back, not making money. “It’s not about the money. If I’m able to get like 20,000 kids excited in one day, I think the blessings from God are worth more than the money,” he explained.
He also expressed gratitude to Richie Mensah, CEO of Lynx Entertainment, for believing in him and changing his life. “Richie Mensah saw this poor boy from the street and made him who I am today. So it’s my job to extend hands to others who can’t afford it, not because I need money, but because I want to do it,” Kuami Eugene added.
Through his story and actions, Kuami Eugene continues to inspire others, proving that success is most meaningful when it’s used to uplift those in need.
Accra, Jan. 18, GNA—Madam Samia Yaba Nkrumah, daughter of Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, has urged African leaders to prioritise unity and integration to ensure the continent’s economic prosperity and global standing.
“For the African to prosper, for our economic survival, we must put our heads together and build our nations together. Even one person or one country can leave a lasting impact. It is not a sentimental goal but a serious economic project,” she said, referencing her father’s vision for a united Africa.
She was delivering the commencement speech at the Pan-African Leadership Global Conference, Graduation and Awards organised by the Pan-African Leadership Institute (PALI), in Accra.
The event, held on the theme: “Transformational Leadership: from PALI to the World,” celebrated the graduation of 269 senior leaders from 33 countries who completed courses such as corporate leadership, youth leadership, political leadership and entrepreneurial leadership.
Awards were presented to distinguished professionals for their contributions to leadership and development.
Madam Nkrumah, also a journalist and politician, described African unity as the foundation for survival and growth.
She encouraged Africans to remain resolute in fulfilling the aspirations of their forebears who sacrificed for the continent’s liberation and development.
Madam Nkrumah urged institutions across the continent to adopt Pan-African studies in their curricula, emphasising that a mindset rooted in Pan-Africanism would empower the next generation to complete Africa’s economic independence.
She lauded PALI for its role in nurturing leaders who embodied Pan-African values, adding that unity and collaboration among African nations would provide the leverage needed to influence global policies, build industries, and enhance economic resilience.
“As our forebears dreamt of a united Africa, we must now make it a reality. The journey ahead demands courage, humility, and collaboration, but together, we can build a prosperous Africa that takes its rightful place in the world.”
Ms Cheryl Wilkins, Co-Director of the Centre for Justice at Columbia University, USA, delivered a keynote address highlighting Ghana’s potential as a hub for transformative leadership.
Sharing her experiences, Ms. Wilkins commended the entrepreneurial spirit of Ghanaians, especially women leaders, whom she described as “unstoppable” and essential to the nation’s progress.
“One image that will stay with me is of a young girl walking to school, balancing books on her head with unwavering focus.”
“She symbolised the future of Ghana—determined, focused, and resilient. She reminded me of the driving force behind great leaders, past and present,” she said.
Ms. Wilkins also acknowledged the significant strides made by Ghanaian women in leadership roles, from banking to education, and expressed hope that these examples would inspire the next generation of African leaders.
In his welcome address, Mr Ade Adebadjo, Chancellor of PALI, underscored the transformative power of knowledge.
He reflected on the Bible’s story of the Queen of Sheba and its emphasis on the pursuit of wisdom, drawing parallels to the graduates’ journey.
“It is important to know things. Knowledge and wisdom are the basis of power. The difference in life can be between what you know and what you do not know,” he said.
Dr Kofi Osei-Kusi, President of PALI, presented the institutional report, celebrating the accomplishments of over 300 leaders from 33 countries who participated in the institute’s programmes last year.
He described the humility required by leaders to embrace continuous learning and announced a milestone for PALI: the relocation of its global headquarters to Trinidad and Tobago in February 2025.
“This marks a new chapter in PALI’s Pan-African agenda. As we hand over the torch to our Caribbean partners, we remain committed to raising holistic, entrepreneurial, and conscientious leaders across the globe,” he said.
Nana Yaa Ampem Darkoa I, the Nkabom Hene of the Akuapem Traditional Area, representing Oseadeyo K. Akuffo III, the Omanhene of Akuapem, praised PALI’s contributions to leadership and education.
She highlighted the Akuapem Traditional Area’s focus on eco-tourism and STEM education, inviting attendees to visit and explore its cultural heritage, including the annual Odwira Festival.
“Our chief is committed to preserving the environment and promoting sustainability. We aim to create a space that supports eco-tourism while maintaining the cultural and historical significance of our traditions,” she said.
The Traditional Leader also lauded the executive graduates for their dedication to learning and encouraged them to contribute their newfound knowledge to Africa’s development.

In a statement, the organisers commended Eduamoah for his dedication and service to the party at various levels. They highlighted his contributions as a Branch Executive, Constituency Organizer, two-term Member of Parliament (MP) for Gomoa East, and the current Central Regional Vice Chairman of the NDC.
“As field marshals, we feel honored and humbled that President Mahama continues to recognize and reward hardworking party executives with key leadership positions,” the statement read.
The statement was jointly signed by Joseph Kojo Mensah (Ajumako Enyan Essiam), Raymond Armah Narh (CR Dean of Organizers), and Nanka-Bruce (Cape Coast South).
The group expressed confidence in Eduamoah’s ability to foster unity in the region and effectively lobby for the region’s fair share of national development projects.
The organisers outlined key infrastructural projects they expect the new minister to prioritize and revive, including:
Komenda Sugar Factory – To boost employment and the sugar industry.
Fisheries University at Anomabo – To enhance education and skill development in the fisheries sector.
Fishing Processing Plant at Elmina – The second largest in West Africa, which remains underutilized.
Nursing and Teacher Training Colleges at Ajumako Biseasi – To expand access to tertiary education in the region.

The event took place on January 18, 2025, at the International Conference Centre.
The talented actress was recognised for her outstanding performance in the movie ‘Widow’s Gift’, directed and produced by Juliet Ibrahim.

A deadly confrontation between soldiers and illegal miners at the AngloGold Ashanti mine at Obuasi in the Ashanti Region, left seven people believed to be illegal miners dead.
The incident occurred on Saturday, January 18, 2025, when close to 60 miners supposedly armed with weapons, including “pump-action guns,” attempted to force their way into the AngloGold Ashanti-operated site.
According to a statement from the Ghana Armed Forces, the miners opened fire on soldiers when intercepted, prompting the military to retaliate in self-defense.
Locally, the news has been a major talking point for most media houses, however, the interest has caught on internationally. Here is how some international media covered the story:

Soldiers shoot dead at least seven miners in Ghana
At least seven people have been killed in a clash with soldiers on duty at a mine in the central Ashanti region, according to the army.
The Ghana Armed Forces said about 60 illegal miners, armed with among others things “pump action guns”, had forced their way into the mine run by global giant AngloGold Ashanti and fired at the soldiers when they were intercepted.
This prompted the soldiers “to retaliate in self-defence”, leading to the deaths and injuries, it said in a statement.
A representative of the miners denied that they had been armed.
Following news of the deaths, there were protests in Obuasi town where several buses were set on fire.
Angry residents poured onto the company’s grounds following the killings, burning at least three vehicles and other equipment belonging to AngloGold Ashanti.
President John Mahama has ordered investigations into the matter, saying anyone found to have acted unlawfully will be brought to justice.
A statement from the presidency indicated that eight people had died.
We are poisoning ourselves’: Ghana gold rush sparks environmental disaster
The government has asked AngloGold Ashanti to cover the medical expenses of the injured and the burial costs, while requiring security agencies to ensure peace in the area.
The company said the situation had since calmed down and it was working closely with the authorities.
It said its main concern was “the safety and health of our employees and those in our community” who were affected by the incident.
The local chairman of the Ghana National Association of Small Scale Miners, Kofi Adams, was quoted by the Reuters news agency as saying that the violence was “unprecedented”.
He said that nine people had died and 14 severely injured adding that it was “difficult to understand why it had happened”.
In the past, he said, warning shots had been fired to ward off intruders. He also disputed the allegation by the military that the people had been armed.
The army said the “illegal miners were wielding locally manufactured rifles, pump action guns” and other weapons. It said it had a duty to defend itself, innocent civilians and property, including by using lethal force.
There have been tensions between AngloGold Ashanti and residents who accuse them of exploiting mineral resources without doing much to develop the area or create jobs.
Some local small-scale mining associations have been asking to be given some of the company’s mining concessions.
The company insists it has been doing a lot for the local communities.
On Monday, some schools built and managed by the company in the area announced a two-day shutdown following the disturbances.
There have been several conflicts between security officers and mining communities in the past, but the situation has been exacerbated by the country’s current economic problems.
Ghana is going through its worst economic crisis in a generation with high public debt, high inflation and unemployment.
Amid the economic crisis, there has been a rise in small-scale mining, including unregulated sites that have been accused of having a devastating impact on the environment.

At least seven people killed by army at Ghana’s AngloGold Ashanti mine
A Ghanaian small-scale miners’ association on Sunday said soldiers killed nine unarmed people at an AngloGold Ashanti (AU.N), opens new tab mine on Saturday night, while the army said seven illegal miners had been killed in a firefight.
Kofi Adams, local chairman of the Ghana National Association of Small Scale Miners, told Reuters that nine people had been killed and fourteen severely injured in the incident at the Obuasi gold mining site in the West African country’s Ashanti Region.
He said the people had not been armed.
Earlier, Ghana’s armed forces said that about 60 illegal miners carrying locally manufactured rifles and other weapons breached the mine’s security fence at around 11:00 pm (2300 GMT) on Saturday and fired on a military patrol deployed there, leading to a shootout.
“This is unprecedented (and) it’s difficult to understand why this happened,” Adams said, noting that in the past, trespassers on the site had been scared off with warning shots.
Ghana’s President John Dramani Mahama ordered an immediate investigation into the incident, the presidency said in a statement on Sunday, calling it “tragic”.
The government has asked AngloGold Ashanti to cover the medical expenses of the injured and the cost of burials, the presidency’s statement said.
AngloGold Ashanti could not immediately be reached for comment.

At Least Seven Dead In Clash Between Illegal Miners, Soldiers At AngloGold Ashanti Mine In Ghana
Clash between soldiers and illegal miners at AngloGold Ashanti mine has left seven dead, sparking protests in Obuasi.
At least seven people have been killed in a violent confrontation between soldiers and illegal miners at a site in the central Ashanti region of Ghana, according to the Ghana Armed Forces.
The incident occurred when around 60 miners, armed with weapons including “pump action guns,” attempted to force their way into an AngloGold Ashanti-operated mine.
The miners opened fire on the soldiers when intercepted, prompting the military to retaliate in self-defense, resulting in fatalities and injuries, the army stated in a press release.
However, a representative of the miners denied claims that the miners were armed, disputing the military’s version of events.
Following the deaths, protests erupted in Obuasi, the town near the mine. Angered residents stormed the grounds of AngloGold Ashanti, setting at least three vehicles and other equipment ablaze. Several buses were also torched during the unrest.
In response to the violence, President John Mahama has ordered a full investigation. He assured that anyone found guilty of unlawful conduct will face justice. The presidency’s statement confirmed that eight people had died, despite earlier reports citing seven fatalities.
The government has instructed AngloGold Ashanti to cover the medical expenses of the injured and burial costs for the deceased. Security agencies have been deployed to ensure peace in the area.
The company has reported that the situation has since calmed, and it is collaborating with authorities on the ongoing investigation. A spokesperson emphasized the company’s primary concern for the safety and health of its employees and the affected community members.
Kofi Adams, the local chairman of the Ghana National Association of Small Scale Miners, called the violence “unprecedented.” Speaking to Reuters, Adams said that nine people had died and 14 had been severely injured.
He expressed confusion over the escalation of the situation, stating that in previous confrontations, warning shots had been fired to deter intruders.
The Ghana Armed Forces reiterated that the illegal miners were armed with locally made rifles, pump action guns, and other weapons, and insisted it had a duty to protect itself, civilians, and property, including through the use of lethal force if necessary.
Tensions between AngloGold Ashanti and local residents have been building for some time. Many accuse the company of exploiting mineral resources without adequately contributing to the region’s development or creating jobs.
Some small-scale mining associations have called for a share of the company’s mining concessions.
In response, AngloGold Ashanti maintains that it has contributed significantly to the local communities, including through infrastructure projects and employment.
The unrest is also a reflection of broader tensions in Ghana, where the country is grappling with a severe economic crisis marked by high inflation, public debt, and unemployment.
The crisis has led to a surge in small-scale mining, including illegal and unregulated operations that have been criticized for their harmful environmental impact.
As part of the fallout from the violence, some schools built and managed by AngloGold Ashanti in the area have shut down for two days, following the disturbances. ‘

The Minister of Roads-designate, Kwame Governs Agbodza, has announced that road tolls will be reintroduced.
According to him, the collection of road tolls will return with technological advancements that will make the process easier and more efficient.
He emphasised that road tolls were a significant source of revenue for the road sector.
Appearing before the Appointments Committee on January 20, 2025, he stated, “As a result, I believe there was some level of negligence in the way it was handled. They claim road tolls were generating about GH¢8 million, but today, there are contractors working for Ghana who are owed GH¢5,000 cedis. Can you imagine the number of road weeders who could be paid with GH¢80 million?”
He added, “Our side consistently stood on principle and said to bring the road tolls back. Yes, road tolls are coming back, but not in the form of building obstructions on the road and having someone manually collect money. They will return through a technological platform that makes it fair, easy to collect, easy to account for, and transparent so the public knows what the money is being used for. We shall come out with a policy on how it will be implemented.”
Road tolls were abolished in November 2021 by the former Nana Akufo-Addo administration.

Scene of the petrol tankers explosion in Dikko, Niger State, Nigeria, on January 18, 2025
The death toll from a gasoline tanker explosion in north-central Nigeria has risen to 86, the country’s emergency response agency said on Sunday.
The blast happened in the early hours of Saturday near the Suleja area of Niger state after individuals attempted to transfer gasoline from a crashed oil tanker into another truck using a generator.
The fuel transfer sparked the explosion, resulting in the deaths of those transferring the gasoline and bystanders.
In an update, Hussaini Isah of the National Emergency Management Agency told the Associated Press that an additional 55 people were injured and are receiving treatment at three different hospitals in the Suleja area.
“There were people that were burnt to ashes. How can we get that figure?” The official said, indicating that the death toll might be higher than 86. “We won’t know the exact figure without forensics.”
The blast claimed so many victims because a crowd had gathered at the scene, including people taking pictures, bystanders, and others attempting to scoop gasoline, Isah said.
Gasoline prices in Africa’s most populous country has soared after the administration of President Bola Tinubu removed subsides on the product more than a year ago in an attempt to channel the resources to more developmental purposes. However, the policy has caused untoward hardship.
Scooping gasoline from a fallen tanker is common in Nigeria as some people see that as an opportunity to get free product that they could either use or resell for a profit.

The Minority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, has criticised the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) government for the violent clash between illegal miners and military personnel at Obuasi.
According to the Nsawam Adoagyiri lawmaker, the NDC government must bear the blame for the unfortunate incident, which has reportedly resulted in the deaths of seven individuals and left several others injured.
He faulted the ruling government, suggesting that it may have indirectly contributed to the tragic incident that resulted in lives being lost.
He specifically pointed to the party’s comments and remarks made during the 2024 general elections, implying that these may have incited and motivated the illegal miners to engage in such actions.
In response to the presidency’s statement directing investigations into the incident, the New Patriotic Party lawmaker urged the NDC to rather reflect on their actions.
“Rather bow your heads in shame. Your irresponsible election comments have brought us this lowest ebb! God should save this country, I am sick!” he wrote on X on January 19, 2025.
Annoh-Dompreh’s comments come in response to President John Dramani Mahama’s directive ordering investigations into the shooting incident.
The president has asked that investigations be conducted into the matter to bring the culprits to book.
In a letter signed by the president’s spokesperson, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, he said, “The government wishes to express deep regret over the tragic loss of up to eight (8) lives, said to be illegal miners, following a violent clash at a mining site in Obuasi.
“In response to the unfortunate incident, President John Dramani Mahama has ordered an immediate investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the clashes and ensure that any individuals found to have acted unlawfully are brought to justice.”
However, the government has asked the management of Anglo-Gold Ashanti to bear the medical expenses of the injured individuals fully and facilitate the burial arrangements of those who have lost their lives.
“The security agencies have also been tasked to take prompt action to restore peace in the area and implement measures to prevent similar occurrences,” he noted.

Ho, Jan. 20, GNA – Mr Richard Divine Bosson, the immediate past Municipal Chief Executive Officer (MCE) of Ho, has threatened legal action over viral claims that a ten-unit housing project in the city was his personal property.
A video circulating on social media shows the buildings neatly lined up and all at lentil level, and with the alleged narrator, Mr Stanley Nelvis Glatey, a National Democratic Congress Activist and Lecturer, alleging it was the private property of the MCE.
The voice is heard calling on the special asset recovery team, ‘Operation Recover All Loot’ (ORAL), set up by President Mahama to address alleged state capture, to investigate the housing project.
However, Mr Bosson, in a written response sighted by the GNA, has stated that the project, was being undertaking by the Assembly to provide accommodation for staff.
According to the response, the said land for the project was donated by the traditional rulers at a public and well documented ceremony, where Dr. Archibald Yao Letsa, then Volta Regional Minister, Togbe Howusu XII, Awafiaga of Asogli State and others were present for the ground-breaking exercise.
The former MCE said in the statement dated Saturday, January 18, 2025, that “The project aimed to alleviate the accommodation burden faced by Assembly staff, and we collaborated with other state institutions to achieve this goal. Specifically, the land in question is owned by the Ghana Health Service and is currently occupied by the Nurses Training College and School of Hygiene.
“We engaged with the relevant stakeholders, including the Boards of the School of Hygiene and Nurses Training College, the Principals, and the Lands Commission, to bring this project to fruition. Notably, there is a documented agreement in place that ensures the two institutions will also benefit from the facility, not just the Ho Municipal Assembly staff.
He went on to state that “a sod-cutting ceremony was held to mark the commencement of the project, and I encourage those with questions to verify the information through the aforementioned institutions.”
Mr Bosson said he considered the misinformation going round as a public deception as the matter was also bearing on his image as a public figure, and therefore would pursue legal action.
“I’m concerned about the spread of misinformation and hope that we can rely on factual accounts to guide our understanding of this matter. Throughout my service, I have diligently worked for the betterment of Ho and Ghana, and I remain committed to transparency and accountability.
“I have instructed my lawyers to take immediate action to protect my reputation and clear my name,” he stated.
Meanwhile, a group calling itself the “Coalition of Volta Youth Against the Sale of Government Lands, has called on the President to extend the ORAL to various regions and districts in the country.
According to Stanley Nelvis Glatey, the Convener of the coalition, state lands in the Volta Regional Capital had been lost to individuals, and therefore the Operation would be required in preserving the crucial assets for future use.
Governs Kwame Agbodza, the Minister-Designate for Roads and Highways, has criticised the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for what he described as a failure to prioritise road maintenance over the past eight years, resulting in significant neglect of the country’s existing road network.
Speaking during his vetting on Monday, January 20, Agbodza emphasised that maintaining the country’s current roads should be a higher priority than constructing new ones.
However, he argued that road maintenance has deteriorated significantly under the NPP administration, with the records from previous years being far superior to current efforts.
The Adaklu MP pointed to a stark contrast in the numbers, noting that in 2016, the country had managed to maintain 9,000 kilometres of roads. However, by 2023, under the NPP government, only 3,000 kilometres of roads had been maintained, illustrating a significant decline in the country’s commitment to road upkeep.
“The principle is that you should spend more on the maintenance of your existing roads than building new roads. Per the records we have in terms of road maintenance, things have gone bad in the last eight years.
“In fact the record maintenance we have for 2016 is unmatched till today. If you check the 2023 records, in areas where we did 9,000km, the NPP was just doing 3,000 km. So, they have really let the country down in terms of road maintenance programme,” he stated.
Pastor Paul Enenche, the founder and senior pastor of Dunamis International Gospel Centre, recently shared an inspiring story about his personal transformation in a YouTube video.
Speaking on the benefits of soul-winning, he highlighted how engaging in God’s work can completely change a person’s life.
Recounting his early struggles, Pastor Enenche revealed, “As a younger person, much younger in secondary school, I was a crowd-shy person. Though I was very aggressive in many ways, I was crowd-shy. Standing before people wasn’t easy.” Despite this limitation, his commitment to soul-winning and working for God broke the barriers of fear and shyness in his life.
Describing his current confidence, he boldly declared, “There is no crowd in this world I can’t face now, even if it’s hell. Put a pulpit in hell, and I’ll face all the devils there.” His powerful statement reflects the inner transformation that comes from serving God wholeheartedly.
Pastor Enenche emphasized that engaging in God’s assignments reveals hidden strengths and untapped potential within individuals. “There are things about yourself you don’t know yet until you begin to work for God,” he said, encouraging believers to step out in faith and discover their capabilities through service.
Through his testimony, Pastor Enenche underlined the life-changing impact of soul-winning, not just for the lives it touches but also for the one doing the work. His story serves as a motivation for Christians to overcome their limitations and find purpose in fulfilling God’s mission.
The Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has expressed dissatisfaction with the actions of the Chairman of the Appointments Committee, Bernard Ahiafor, during the vetting of ministerial nominees.
The dispute arose when Afenyo-Markin raised concerns about addressing the appointments of Chief Executive Officers and Managing Directors. However, the Majority argued that such discussions were outside the scope of the ministerial vetting process.
The vetting of Kwame Governs Agbodza, the minister-designate for Roads and Highways, was slated to begin at 10:00 AM. However, disagreements delayed proceedings, and as of 11:54 AM, the session had yet to commence.
The meeting was briefly suspended for five minutes to resolve the disruptions, but tensions persisted.
Afenyo-Markin accused his colleagues, including the Deputy Speaker, of exhibiting rude behaviour and criticized the chairman for proceeding in bad faith. He alleged that the vetting session resumed after the suspension, even though members of the Minority were not present.
“Chairman, don’t raise your voice, you suspended sitting for 5 minutes. You had called me and I said I was having a meeting with my caucus. I will join you, then the next moment you start. I want to register this protest that you have proceeded in bad faith.
“It’s not the understanding we had. I was responding to a point of order, you came in rudely to say you have ruled. Bring down your voice chairman, you are raising your voice. Mr. Chairman all your colleagues including you have been rude to me this morning. You have been very rude.
“The rate at which I’m being interrupted is unacceptable. The chairman rudely interrupted me.”
He refused to apologize to the Chair, despite having his attention drawn to the matter, insisting that he did not show any disrespect.
Jirapa, (UW/R), Jan. 20, GNA – The Charity Watch Foundation (CHAWAF), a United States of America (USA)-based charity organisation, has donated assorted items to the St. Joseph’s Orphanage in Jirapa to support the upkeep of the children at the facility.
The items included bags of rice, gallons of cooking oil, cartons of sardines, boxes of Nido, Millo, baby formulae, and detergents, among others, valued at about GH₵12,000.00.
The Foundation also presented an undisclosed cash amount to the orphanage to help meet other needs in caring for the children.
Presenting the items at Jirapa at the weekend, Mr Edward I. Sumaila, the President of the Foundation, said he was touched by the “great stories” of the foundation in raising “great” human resources for Ghana and beyond.
He said that triggered the Foundation’s support to the facility with the items self-financed by the CHAWAF’s Board of Directors.
Mr Sumaila expressed hope that the support would contribute to the proper growth of the children and encouraged other charity organisations to extend their support to the facility to help create a better future for the children.
“There are a lot of people across the world that struggle to make ends meet and orphans have no parents to provide for them…
So, these groceries will help them provide the quality of life that children who are privileged to live with their parents will have,” Mr Sumail, also a PhD candidate, explained.
The CHAWAF was a 501 (C) registered organisation in Columbus Ohio (OH) in the USA working to enhance education, nutrition, and Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) and provide livelihood support to vulnerable communities with a focus on Northern Ghana.
The donation was in pursuant to the nutrition and WASH components of the Foundation’s operational areas and would also contribute to achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on WASH and Nutrition by 2030.
Reverend Sister Lydia Akanpientiba, a retired Public Health Nurse, the Sister In-charge of the St. Joseph’s Orphanage, thanked the Foundation for the intervention.
She also prayed for God’s blessings to the orgnaisation to continue to support the orphanage and other needy people in society.
Rev. Sis. Akanpientiba indicated that feeding was the most pressing challenge of the orphanage, especially infant formulae – nun 1 and nun 2 – for feeding the infants at the facility.
At the time of the visit, there were four infants at the orphanage, but Rev. Sis. Akanpientiba said two more infants were expected at the facility by Monday, January 20, 2025.
She also mentioned detergents and renovation of the facility as other needs of the facility and appealed for continued support of the philanthropic organisations and individuals.
The St. Joseph’s Orphanage, which started in 1939, currently has 21 children, with the youngest being seven weeks old and the oldest being 12 years old.
At least eight illegal miners were killed in Ghana by the armed forces.
This happened in the town of Obuasi. Hence, with huge conflicting reports between the version of the army – and by miners and locals – an urgent inquiry is needed.
The BBC reports, “The Ghana Armed Forces said about 60 illegal miners, armed with among others things “pump action guns”, had forced their way into the mine run by global giant AngloGold Ashanti and fired at the soldiers when they were intercepted.”
The armed forces said the “illegal miners were wielding locally manufactured rifles, pump action guns…”
Tensions erupted after the deaths of the miners in Obuasi.
A representative of the miners rebuffed the accusation that they had been armed with weapons.
Ghana is blighted by high public debt and countless economic woes. Hence, with high unemployment and inflation, many people are desperate to make a living. Therefore, similar to events in South Africa, where many illegal miners have died, increasing small-scale mining is setting off convulsions among major companies and political officials.
The government of Ghana (President John Mahama) ordered an immediate investigation “to determine the circumstances surrounding the clashes and ensure that any individuals found to have acted unlawfully are brought to justice.”
Lee Jay Walker (Modern Tokyo Times analyst) says, “It is hoped that a genuine inquiry will be implemented and accountability will be forthcoming. However, when big business is involved – and murky political ties exist in nations like Ghana and South Africa – then doubts remain.”

The Minority in Parliament has called on President John Dramani Mahama to take immediate action to rein in what they describe as “thugs” from the National Democratic Congress (NDC), who are allegedly disrupting the re-collation of election results in the Ablekuma North Constituency.
According to the Minority, the ongoing violence and lawlessness in the country cannot be ignored by President Mahama, who they assert is fully aware of the situation.
Speaking to the media in Parliament, the Minority Second Deputy Whip and Member of Parliament for Weija Gbawe, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, emphasised that the President, as the Commander-in-Chief, has a responsibility to ensure that order is maintained and that those engaging in criminal activities are held accountable.
Mr. Shaid, accused the NDC of deliberately inciting violence, with supporters engaging in thuggish behaviour in a bid to overturn the democratic process in the Ablekuma North constituency—an election he insists the NDC lost.
“The Minority Caucus stands united in sending a clear and urgent message to His Excellency the President, and to the Ghana Police Service, about the escalating lawlessness in the country,” Mr. Shaid declared. “We are deeply concerned by the growing chaos following the declaration of John Dramani Mahama as President.”
Mr. Shaid accused the NDC of deliberately fostering a climate of violence and disruption, with senior party members, including Mr Totobi Quakyi and Malik Basintale, allegedly orchestrating these attacks.
“The latest incident, in which NDC supporters, led by the regional organiser, physically attacked Electoral Commission officials and damaged property, is a shocking display of lawlessness,” Mr Shaid said.
“This is not just an isolated event, but part of a deliberate, coordinated effort by senior NDC members to disrupt the electoral process and prevent the NPP’s legitimate victory in Ablekuma North from being recognised.”
Mr. Shaid stressed that despite the NPP losing around 60 parliamentary seats, many of which were decided by narrow margins, the party had graciously accepted the election results. The NPP, he argued, upheld the values of democracy by conceding defeat with dignity and refraining from resorting to violence.
“The NPP graciously accepted our losses, even when the margins were as narrow as fewer than a thousand votes,” Mr Shaid noted. “We chose the path of respect for the democratic process, while the NDC, despite their clear defeat in Ablekuma North, has resorted to violence and disruption, claiming they are defending the Electoral Commission. This is nothing more than a smokescreen for their refusal to accept the will of the people.”
Mr Shaid thus reiterated his call on President Mahama to act swiftly and decisively, urging him to rein in the violent factions within his party.
“President Mahama, you can no longer claim ignorance of the escalating lawlessness and violence sweeping across the country,” Mr Shaid warned. “It is time for you to take responsibility for your party’s actions and bring the violence to an end. The time for inaction is over.”
The Minority also called on the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr George Akuffo Dampare, to take urgent action to restore law and order.
They are demanding that those responsible for the unrest be swiftly brought to justice to prevent further harm to the integrity of the nation’s democratic institutions.
“We must all stand united to ensure that Ghana’s democracy is not undermined by lawlessness and violence,” Mr Shaid concluded. “The authorities must act immediately to preserve peace, protect the rule of law, and uphold the integrity of our democratic system.”
There is still tension in Nkwanta, in the Oti Region, following last week’s violent clash, which resulted in the deaths of three individuals and left many others severely injured.
Military and police forces have been deployed to the area to prevent further clashes, but the situation has caused most residents to flee the community despite the imposition of a curfew.
A teacher in the community, who spoke to Citi News on condition of anonymity, confirmed that businesses, including schools, remain closed.
“A lot of people have left the town, so the stores have been closed. The market is the only place open, with only a few people inside. Vehicles are able to move freely through the municipality. The empty streets and closed businesses paint a picture of the uncertainty and fear gripping the area,” the teacher stated.
The violence in Nkwanta, which occurred on Wednesday, January 15, and continued into the night of Thursday, January 16, has left three people dead and several others injured.
Residents are living in fear as the situation remains tense following sporadic gunshots fired by unidentified individuals.
The government swiftly deployed security personnel to help restore calm, with additional troops being sent to enforce law and order in the area.
As a result of the conflict, about 200 people have fled Nkwanta to Pampawie, Ahamansu, and other destinations in the Kadjebi District.
Kadjebi, which borders the Nkwanta Municipality, has become a safe haven for displaced residents seeking refuge from the violence.
Barely two weeks after returning as President, John Dramani Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) are facing an uphill task in fulfilling a major election promise made to the Zongo community.
During the election campaign, President Mahama and the NDC made fees for the annual Hajj pilgrimage a key issue, pledging to drastically reduce what they referred to as the exorbitant GH₵75,000 fees charged by the Hajj Board under the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government.
At the recent Muslim thanksgiving service following his election, President Mahama reiterated the promise to significantly reduce the fare, announcing the establishment of an interim Hajj Task Force headed by MP Collins Dauda.
The interim Hajj Task Force participated in the 2025 Hajj Conference in Saudi Arabia, where they engaged with Saudi authorities and Hajj service providers. However, after these engagements, the Collins Dauda-led task force has realized that the total cost per pilgrim will likely be close to the existing Hajj fare.
A source from the Hajj Task Force, speaking on the condition of anonymity, explained:
The source continued:
Discussions between the task force and the new government are ongoing, with a decision expected before the 2025 Hajj fare is announced.
Faced with the need for a substantial government subsidy to meet its election pledge, the task force has also considered an alternative: reducing the number of Ghanaian pilgrims from the allocated 6,000 to 4,000 or fewer, to reduce the financial burden.
The new Hajj Task Force has already signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Saudi Arabia to confirm the participation of Ghanaian pilgrims in this year’s Hajj.
Hajj is an annual pilgrimage to Mecca, Saudi Arabia, which every Muslim who can afford it is encouraged to undertake at least once in their lifetime.
Following the recent global economic crisis, Hajj fees worldwide have increased, with prices doubling in some countries since the Covid-19 pandemic.
The then-opposition NDC made significant use of this issue during the campaign, with President Mahama and the NDC promising a “drastic reduction” if they came to power.
Hajj Fares in Neighboring Countries
Checks in neighboring West African countries show that Hajj prices are similar to those in Ghana.
In Nigeria, the Nigerian Hajj Commission has announced that the fare for this year’s Hajj will be 10 million Naira (about $6,000), nearly the same as last year. The Nigerian Federal Government recently declared it would not provide a subsidy for the 2025 Hajj, meaning each pilgrim will have to pay close to 10 million Naira.
In neighboring Ivory Coast, which has a large Muslim population, pilgrims paid 3.24 million CFA francs (about $5,500) for last year’s Hajj. The government recently announced that the fee will remain the same due to the “magnanimity” of President Alassane Ouattara.
In The Gambia, pilgrims are paying about 500,000 Gambian Dinar, which is equivalent to nearly $7,000. The country’s Minister for Lands and Religious Affairs announced last November that the price would remain the same for this year.
Kwame Governs Agbodza, the Minister-Designate for Roads and Highways, has refuted claims made by former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo that his government constructed 11,000 kilometres of new roads during its tenure from 2017 to January 2025.
Speaking at his vetting before the Appointments Committee of Parliament on Monday, January 20, Agbodza presented what he described as factual data on road projects completed during the period, contradicting the former President’s assertion.
Agbodza revealed that, according to official records, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government constructed only 673 kilometres of new roads, far below the 11,000 kilometres claimed by former President Akufo-Addo.
He emphasised that the majority of the work reported by the NPP involved re-gravelling and gravelling existing roads, which accounted for 6,185.90 kilometres.
“At the time of the transition, the new roads constructed amounted to 673 kilometres. The record in Parliament clearly shows that Ghana did not construct 11,000 kilometres of new roads since 2017 but rather focused on re-graveling and graveling,” Agbodza stated.
He argued that while maintenance activities like re-graveling and upgrading are important for preserving the road network, they should not be equated with constructing entirely new roads.
“At the time of the transition, the new roads constructed were 673 kilometres and so the record Parliament has is that Ghana did not construct 11,000 kilometres of new roads since 2017 but rather 673 kilometres have been constructed as new roads. The bulk of the work which has been done is re-graveling and graveling, which is 6,185.90 kilometres,” he added.

ACCRA, Ghana (AP) — Soldiers killed at least seven people at a gold mine in southern Ghana, the West African country’s military said.
Ghana’s armed forces said Sunday in a statement on X that around 60 “illegal miners” carrying locally manufactured rifles and other weapons breached the security fences of the Obuasi gold mining site in the Ashanti region on Saturday night. The intruders fired at a military patrol deployed there, which returned fire, killing seven of the “illegal miners” and wounding one, the military said.
In a statement, President John Dramani Mahama called for an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the shootout. The statement also said that Ghana’s government “wishes to express deep regret” over the tragic loss of life.
Mahama asked AngloGold Ashanti, the company that owns the mine, to cover the medical expenses for the wounded and burial costs.
AngloGold Ashanti is headquartered in the United States but has secondary listings in Ghana and South Africa. In Ghana, alongside the Obuasi mine, it also owns the Iduapriem mine southwest of the country.
The company confirmed that a shootout took place at the Obuasi mine and that seven “illegal miners” were killed.
“A large group of armed, illegal miners attempted to forcibly gain unauthorized access to mine infrastructure. Authorities mobilized to defend against this attack and to ensure the safety and security of employees and those in the immediate surrounds,” the company said in a statement released Sunday.
The chronic challenge of illegal gold mining — known locally as “galamsey” — was a major issue during Ghana’s presidential election campaign last month and a source of concern for voters, triggering protests and criticism against the outgoing government.
Ghana is Africa’s top gold producer and the world’s sixth largest, but the commodity has been increasingly mined illegally as people become more desperate to find jobs in a crumbling economy. The mining has polluted rivers and other parts of the environment, despite government actions to clamp down on the practice.

Kumawood actor, Kwaku Manu, has shared his opinion on former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s statue which was vandalised on January 13, 2025.
In a discussion on United Showbiz, Kwaku Manu noted that before a statue is erected in favour of a president, it should have to go through parliamentary approval.
“I am disappointed in Ghanaians because we fight for politicians, but we don’t care about ourselves. People are going through hardships in the country and the leaders are not doing anything about it. I won’t be surprised if someone vandalised the statue out of hunger… All I am saying is that before a president decides to erect a statue for himself, it should go through Parliament.
“Through that, they can deliberate if that particular president deserves it. Without that, everyone can just erect a statue on behalf of a president. These leaders should let the citizens honour them and not the other way round,” he said.
Kwaku Manu also raised concerns about the individuals who were killed at Techiman during the 2020 general elections.
“During the 2020 general elections, some people were shot dead at Techiman, everyone, including journalists, called on the president to at least deliver a speech on it. But he didn’t do it. Assuming this happened in another country, the police involved would be arrested by now,” he added.
Background:
The statue of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, located at the Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital at Sekondi, was vandalised by unknown individuals.
It remains unclear who is responsible for the destruction.
This is not the first time the statue has been tampered with, as part of it was damaged a few weeks earlier, but subsequently repaired.
President Akufo-Addo faced significant criticisms after unveiling the statue on November 6, 2024.

Sports and recreation in Ghana have suffered severe mismanagement over the past decade, with the worst decline occurring under the previous administration of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, according to a statement from Ghana Sports.
The statement, signed by Suleman Mohammed-Mustapha, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) outlines a series of failures that have tarnished Ghana’s sporting image internationally, attributing much of the decline to the National Sports Authority (NSA), which is responsible for talent development, facility maintenance, and sports administration.
According to the report, some of the most damaging incidents in Ghana’s sports sector over the last decade include:
Lack of School Sports Competitions – Since 2019, no inter-regional sports festivals have been organized for basic and second-cycle schools. Challenges in Disability Sports – Ghana’s disabled athletes struggled to secure funding for international competitions.
Poor Treatment of Female Footballers – Women’s national team players had to stage demonstrations before receiving their bonuses.
Unsafe Travel for Athletes – Ghanaian table tennis players for the All-African Games were forced to travel in the bucket of a pick-up truck.
Lack of Medical Support – Cyclists competing in national races had to wait on their bicycles for over 30 minutes before an ambulance was made available for their escort.
Inadequate Equipment – Athletes were given wrong footwear sizes, with some receiving size 36 instead of 41.
Outdated Bicycles – Ghanaian cyclists competed with aluminium-made bicycles instead of the modern fibre-glass models used internationally.
Infrastructure Failures – The Cape Coast Stadium suffered power outages during competitions, disrupting matches.
CAF Sanctions – The Confederation of African Football (CAF) banned Ghana from hosting AFCON qualifiers due to substandard pitches.
Historic AFCON Failure – Ghana failed to qualify for the 2026 African Cup of Nations, marking the first such failure in over 20 years.
Black Stars’ Poor Performance – The Black Stars were eliminated at the group stage of the 2024 AFCON in Côte d’Ivoire, further tarnishing Ghana’s football reputation.
Sports Ghana attributes these failures to poor leadership at the National Sports Authority (NSA), which has had three Director Generals within the past eight years.
The last person to hold the position, Seth Panwum, served as Board Chairman before taking over as Acting Director-General following the dismissal of Mr. Dodzie Numekevor in September 2024.
A survey conducted by Sports Ghana revealed that past NSA Directors lacked expertise in sports management, leading to the mismanagement of resources, talent, and infrastructure.
The organization is now calling for technically trained sports professionals to lead the NSA and restore Ghana’s lost sporting glory.
With the dissolution of all government boards under the NDC administration, the National Sports Authority currently has no Director-General.
Sports Ghana is urging President John Dramani Mahama’s government to appoint a qualified sports technocrat to take charge of the NSA and spearhead reforms.
The statement concludes with a plea for urgent action, emphasizing that only competent leadership can revive Ghana’s sports sector and restore the country’s prestige on the international stage.

The Minority in Parliament has threatened to withdraw its cooperation in Parliament if President John Dramani Mahama fails to resolve the state of lawlessness after the general elections.
The caucus contends that the incidents of violence and the destruction of state property post-election by some individuals suspected to be affiliated with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) are meant to prevent the Electoral Commission from declaring the Ablekuma North Parliamentary election results in favor of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Addressing journalists, the Second Deputy Minority Whip, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, called on the President and the Election Security Taskforce to enforce law and order.
“To President Mahama, we call on you to take immediate steps to call your party’s thugs to order. You cannot pretend to be unaware of all the lawlessness and violence in this country. We also call on the Ghana Police Service, the IGP and the Election Security Taskforce to rise to the occasion and enforce law and order without hesitation.
“The EC officials and all the stakeholders in this electoral process must be protected. They are Ghanaians just like us. We hereby serve notice that should the president, who is the Commander-in-Chief, fail to take steps to protect ordinary citizens, we, the Minority Caucus, shall protest through lawful means and withdraw our cooperation in Parliament.”
Fashion is a powerful form of self-expression, and for African men, it offers a rich canvas to blend traditional elements with contemporary style. African men are increasingly embracing a wide range of stylish and versatile outfits that reflect their cultural heritage while showcasing modern fashion trends. From sharp tailoring to colorful prints, there are countless ways to put together a good-looking outfit that exudes confidence and flair.
1. Traditional African Attire
The first category worth exploring is traditional African wear, which is both elegant and culturally significant. Outfits such as the agbada (a flowing robe often worn by men in West Africa) and the dashiki (a loose-fitting shirt made from bright, bold fabrics) are staples in African fashion. These garments often feature intricate embroidery or vibrant patterns that make a statement. Paired with accessories like a stylish hat or leather sandals, these traditional outfits can be both comfortable and striking for various events, from weddings to formal gatherings.
2. Tailored Suits
For formal occasions, well-tailored suits are a timeless choice. African men are increasingly opting for slim-fit suits that combine the best of Western tailoring with African fabric choices. Suits made from local fabrics like kente or ankara offer a unique fusion of modern design and cultural pride. Dark tones like navy and black work well for business settings, while brighter, patterned suits can be worn for weddings, parties, or social gatherings. When accessorized with sleek shoes and a tie, this outfit delivers a sharp, sophisticated look.
3. Casual Chic
Casual wear doesn’t have to be boring. African men can look effortlessly stylish in simple yet fashionable outfits such as well-fitted jeans paired with a button-up shirt or a smart polo. For a more laid-back look, T-shirts featuring African prints or slogans provide a sense of pride and identity. Accessories like stylish watches, bracelets, and sunglasses can elevate a casual outfit, making it both trendy and comfortable.
4. Athleisure
For those who prefer a more relaxed yet trendy look, athleisure is another great option. Comfortable yet stylish, this trend involves pairing sportswear with everyday items, such as joggers with a fitted hoodie or a tracksuit with sneakers. African-inspired designs and prints can be incorporated into these outfits to add a unique twist, making them stand out from mainstream athleisure trends.
In conclusion, good-looking outfits for African men are about embracing the rich diversity of styles available. Whether through the boldness of traditional African fabrics or the elegance of a modern suit, African men have a plethora of options to create stylish, versatile, and culturally resonant wardrobes. Combining comfort, tradition, and contemporary flair ensures they always look their best, no matter the occasion.
Accra, Jan 20, GNA – The Minority Caucus in Parliament has issued an ultimatum to the government, threatening to withdraw its cooperation if adequate security measures are not put in place to re-collate the Ablekuma North parliamentary election results.
Mr Jerry Ahmed Shiab, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament (MP) for Weija-Gbawe, who addressed the Parliamentary Press Corp in Parliament House on Monday, said:
“the Electoral Commission needs to recollate the outstanding polling stations, but this requires a secure environment.”
Mr Ahmed Shiab urged President John Dramani Mahama to call the alleged NDC supporters causing chaos to order, to allow the Electoral Commission (EC) to complete its work.
The Ablekuma North constituency has been embroiled in controversy, with the EC suspending the collation of results due to escalating tensions.
The Commission had appealed for security to complete the collation process, citing the destruction of property and threats to staff by alleged NDC supporters.
The Minority Caucus’s threat to withdraw cooperation comes amid concerns over the integrity of the electoral process. With the government facing pressure to ensure a fair and transparent outcome, the situation in Ablekuma North remained a critical test of its commitment to democratic principles.

Asante Kotoko head coach, Prosper Nartey Ogum, has likened Kwame Opoku’s goal-scoring instincts to that of Cameroonian forward, Frank Etouga Mbella.
Ogum’s praise for Opoku comes after the striker scored a brace in Kotoko’s 4-1 thrashing of Vision FC in matchday 17 of the Ghana Premier League.
Speaking to the media after the game, Ogum revealed that Opoku reminds him of Mbella, who shone under his guidance during the 2021/22 season, helping Kotoko secure the Premier League title. “Yes, he is a photocopy of him, a replica in terms of goal-scoring. Mbella is a killer, and Opoku has those instincts. He knows where he is in front of the goal,” Ogum said.
Since joining Kotoko, Opoku has scored four goals in the league, leaving him five goals behind top scorer Faisal Chawetey.
With his current form, Opoku will be aiming to maintain his starting role and help win his first league title with Kotoko this season.
Kotoko’s next challenge comes in matchday 18 of the Ghana Premier League, as they face Karela United at the Baba Yara Stadium.

Banda-Ahenkro (B/R), Jan. 20, GNA – Youth groups in the Banda District of the Bono Region have described Mr Ahmed Ibrahim’s nomination as the Minister-designate for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs as ‘a source of pride and inspiration’ for the Banda people.
They expressed appreciation to President John Dramani Mahama for the nomination of Mr Ibrahim, also the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Banda Constituency, hoping to seechanges and transformation in the local government systems and structures.
Addressing a news conference at Banda-Ahenkro, Mr Jerry Sito, the Spokesperson for the Youth Groups, and the Assembly Member of Banda- Ahenkro West Electoral Area, said the youth in the area had high hopes and confidence in the MP to impact positively in the ministry by shaping policies that would impact millions of lives.
“As our MP embarks on a new chapter, our people are confident that he will continue to make significant contributions to the development of the local communities and the nation by extension”, he stated.
He said the youth were highly convinced and optimistic that with his strength, resilience, wisdom, exuberance, determination and parliamentary and political experiences, the minister-designate would be in the position to tackle all emerging challenges at the ministry.
“In fact, his nomination and political successes challenges and inspires some of us to pursue high excellence in our life careers,” Mr Sito stated.
Nana Pe-Aboatea II, the Baamuhene (sub-chief) of and the Acting President of the Banda Traditional Council, also expressed the people’s appreciation to the President for “recognizing a Banda citizen as a Minister of State and thereby setting a significant milestone in the area”.

Kwame Governs Agbodza, the Minister-Designate for Roads and Highways, has criticised the previous government’s decision to abolish road tolls, describing the move as an “illegal act.”
Speaking during his vetting in Parliament on Monday, January 20, he detailed the events leading up to the controversial policy change and highlighted the financial implications of the decision.
Agbodza also hinted at the reintroduction of road tolls as a measure to enhance revenue generation for national development.
Agbodza disclosed that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) members on the Roads and Transport Committee of Parliament had cautioned against the policy before it was officially announced.
Despite their warnings, the then-Minister of Roads and Highways, Kwasi Amoako-Attah, proceeded with the decision, disregarding the concerns raised by stakeholders and experts.
Highlighting the financial repercussions of the decision, Agbodza pointed out that road tolls had been a significant source of revenue for the Road Fund, which is critical for maintaining and expanding the country’s road network.
“It is a matter that has attracted national attention. Accrual to the road fund was only GH¢250 million and we worked to increase it to gh¢1.5 billion, today, it is over GH¢2 billion, so we cautioned the government against cancelling the road tolls and we were surprised that they cancelled it. It was an act of illegality to cancel it.”
When questioned about the potential reintroduction of road tolls, the Minister-Designate also stated unequivocally that they would make a comeback under his leadership.
He explained that restoring tolls is necessary to enhance revenue collection and ensure the sustainability of road infrastructure development.
