Professional services firm PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) is urging Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson to provide updates on planned Value Added Tax (VAT) reforms and other tax measures during the upcoming mid-year budget review on July 24.
In its maiden budget earlier this year, the government outlined plans to implement VAT reforms over the course of 2025.
Speaking to Citi Business News, PwC Senior Partner, Vish Ashiagbor called for greater clarity on the current tax framework.
“We expect the Minister to confirm that the budget presented in March is largely on track. That stability has been reassuring for the business community,” Ashiagbor said.
“However, you’ll recall that the March budget also raised expectations around VAT system reforms and the potential removal of levies such as the COVID-19 tax. At the time, we were told more assessment was needed before implementation.”
The business community is now looking to the mid-year review for clearer timelines and direction on these tax policy changes.

The central bank is increasing scrutiny on businesses in the real estate and private education sectors that continue to quote prices and demand payments in US dollars – in a renewed effort to enforce the Ghanaian cedi’s legal tender status.
Bank of Ghana Governor Dr. Johnson Pandit Asiama said the practice of dollar-pricing within the country’s borders constitutes an “economic distortion” and breaches national monetary law.
In addressing the UPSA Law School’s Banking Roundtable, Dr. Asiama stated that such informal dollarisation undermines the transmission of monetary policy and erodes public trust in the national currency.
While the cedi has appreciated more than 42 percent against the US dollar so far this year – bolstered by tighter monetary policy, improved reserves and stronger trade performance – the Governor warned that these gains remain vulnerable to behavioural and institutional gaps in currency usage.
He singled out the real estate and education sectors as “priority enforcement zones”, citing recurring violations where dollar invoicing has become common practice.
‘’A disturbing trend persists: a growing number of local businesses and service providers, particularly in real estate, education, and vehicle imports, are demanding payments in US dollars or quoting prices in foreign currency. This is a breach of law and a breach of trust in our national currency’’, he said
We must decisively reverse this culture
Countries such as Kenya and South Africa provide instructive examples. In Nairobi or Cape Town, it would be nearly impossible for a citizen to demand or accept dollars for domestic transactions. The pride in the local currency is enforced not only through law, but through civic responsibility. In Ghana, we must cultivate a similar ethic of currency patriotism.
The Bank of Ghana is working with stakeholders to re-emphasize the legal tender status of the Cedi and discourage foreign currency invoicing for local goods and services. At the same time, we are promoting greater access to cedi-based digital payments to eliminate friction and deepen currency formalization, said the Governor
“The use of foreign currency in everyday domestic transactions is not only illegal; it signals a loss of confidence in the cedi,” he said.
Under Ghanaian law, the cedi is the sole legal tender for all payments within the country. This status, enshrined in the Bank of Ghana Act (Act 612), gives the central bank exclusive authority to issue currency and mandates the cedi’s use in all commercial transactions.
The Bank is working with law enforcement agencies, Ghana Revenue Authority and sector regulators to identify and prosecute businesses that violate this provision. Circulars have already been issued to regulated institutions and additional compliance mechanisms are expected in coming months.
While no new penalties were announced, the Governor’s speech implied that a stricter enforcement regime is imminent. He called on stakeholders – including businesses, financial institutions and regulators – to help restore the cedi’s dominance by pricing goods and services in the national currency.
Beyond enforcement, the central bank is also expanding digital payment infrastructure to support use of the cedi. It is piloting the eCedi – a central bank digital currency – and tightening regulations around fintech and virtual asset platforms to ensure that innovation does not bypass monetary policy controls.
Dr. Asiama drew comparisons with peer economies in Africa, particularly Kenya and South Africa, where it is uncommon and culturally unacceptable for local businesses to demand foreign currency for domestic transactions.
He argued that Ghana needs a similar sense of “currency patriotism”.
The speech comes amid a broader effort by the central bank to consolidate recent macroeconomic gains. Inflation had dropped to 13.7 percent by June – down from a peak of 54.1 percent in late 2022 – and gross international reserves have climbed to over US$11billion.
Still, the Governor acknowledged that legal tender status alone is insufficient to sustain the cedi’s resurgence. “The strength of a currency,” he said, “ultimately depends on the confidence of the people who use it.”

Head of Communications for Asante Kotoko’s Circle 0086, Martin Tawiah, has thrown his full support behind the Fabu Census, describing it as a transformative initiative for the club’s future.
Speaking to Agyapa Radio, Tewiah revealed his personal commitment to the project, which was launched under the Nana Yaw Amponsah administration to engage Kotoko fans, especially in the diaspora.
“I’m one of the very first people who contributed to the Fabu Census. The Nana Yaw Amponsah administration started the initiative with the fans in the diaspora. It’s a very good initiative,” he stated.
Tewiah explained that the overarching vision of the Fabu Census is to raise funds to build a 40,000-seater stadium for the club within five years—a plan that he fully supports.
“The vision for the Fabu Census is to generate money to build a 40-seater capacity stadium for the club in five years. That’s the plan that was communicated to us and I bought the silver package. I’ve paid $5 a month since 2022.”

The Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe Constituency Jerry Ahmed Shaib, has denied making a statement suggesting he would sell his parliamentary seat if Dr Mahamudu Bawumia is elected as the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer.
A story circulating online, particularly on opr.news, carried the headline: “I Dare My NPP, I’ll Sell My Seat If Bawumia Is Mistakenly Elected as Flagbearer.”
Shaib has described the report as false, malicious, and intended to mislead the public and sow division within the NPP.
In a statement issued on July 21, 2025, Shaib denied ever granting any interview formal or informal expressing such views.
“I categorically deny ever making such a statement. I have not granted any interview formal or informal expressing such views. The story is entirely false, malicious, and clearly intended to mislead the public and sow division within the New Patriotic Party (NPP),” he said.
He condemned the publication as a “reckless piece of fabrication” and an act of irresponsible journalism, adding that it was defamatory and calculated to tarnish his reputation.
“This is a blatant case of irresponsible journalism and the spread of fake news. The story is not only a reckless piece of fabrication but also defamatory and calculated to lower my hard-earned reputation before right-thinking members of society,” he stressed.
Shaib further noted that the online platform behind the story had failed to provide any details regarding when, where, or how the alleged interview was conducted, which, in his view, confirmed the fictitious nature of the publication.
The Weija-Gbawe legislator has demanded an immediate cessation of the circulation of the false report, a full retraction, and an unqualified public apology through the same channel.
He warned that failure to comply would leave him with no choice but to pursue legal action to protect his name and integrity.

Dr Edward Omane Boamah, the Minister of Defence, has outlined a 15-point vision for retooling the Ghana Armed Forces as part of efforts to enhance its capabilities and readiness.
Among the 15 points vision is a one-billion-dollar investment to modernise Ghana Armed Forces over three and a half years.
Others are advanced tactical vehicles, body armour, and digital communication systems for the Army and maritime enhancement.
Dr Omane Boamah stated this when he took his turn at the Government Accountability Series for the first half of the year at the Presidency in Accra.
The Government Accountability Series is being organised by the Presidency Communications Bureau as part of efforts to promote transparency and accountability in governance.
The rest of the three-and-a-half-year vision for retooling the Ghana Armed Forces includes new air assets, including Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), for the Ghana Air Force to operate effectively and the construction of 10,000 housing units across all garrisons.
Others are enlistment and recruitment to increase the manpower strength of the Ghana Armed Forces by 12,000 over the next three and a half years and strengthening bilateral and multilateral alliances.
The rest are enhancing local production through Defence Industries Holding Company Limited (DHOC) and aligning defence strategy with national development goals.
Regarding security challenges, he cited threats such as chieftaincy, illegal mining (galamsey), violent extremism with foresight and readiness, and preparing for floods, droughts, and food security.
The Minister mentioned promoting diversity and inclusion in the Armed Forces, ensuring the well-being of veterans through the Mahama Cares, building more health facilities, and additional funding from DHOC.
On National Service, Dr Omane Boamah said they would be training 10,000 youth in disaster preparedness and patriotism.
Touching on national unity and progress, Dr Omane Boamah emphasised collective responsibility and unity for Ghana’s progress.
“As we stand at the threshold of a new era, the Mahama Second Coming, and resetting Ghana, let us remember that our strength lies in not just our arms, but in our unity, our resilience, and our unwavering commitment to Ghana’s progress,” the Minister said.
“Today, we have outlined a vision for a modernised, industrialised, and inclusive defence sector that serves as a beacon of hope and stability in our region,” Dr Omane Boamah stated.

The Minister of Defence, Dr Edward Omane Boamah, has revealed that thousands of rounds of military ammunition transferred from the Ghana Armed Forces to the National Security Secretariat in 2024 have not been accounted for.
He has therefore expressed outrage over the situation, questioning why such a magnitude of ammunition could be transferred to an agency that does not maintain an active fighting force.
Dr Omane Boamah made the revelation when he took his turn at the newly instituted programme by the government known as the “Government Accountability Series” on Monday, July 21, 2025.
He has therefore directed the National Security Secretariat to thoroughly investigate the circumstances surrounding the transfer of the ammunition and its current whereabouts, as it has not yet been accounted for
“The reality is that to date, those ammunitions have not been accounted for,” he emphasized.
Explaining why the issue must be investigated, he said, “How the Ghana Armed Forces could transfer ammunition to the National Security that doesn’t have a fighting force in 2024 is a question that has to be answered”.
Notwithstanding the irregular transfer of the thousands of rounds of military ammunition which have not been accounted for, he expressed optimism that “we have kept our nation safe and stable.”
The Ghana Armed Forces, he indicated, “has passed it [the investigation] on to the National Security Secretariat to investigate since they were the recipient.”
The Minister of Defence, Dr Edward Omane Boamah’s turn at the “Government Accountability Series” afforded him the opportunity to update the nation on the achievements of the government’s defence sector under the leadership of President Mahama.

Key players in Ghana’s agricultural sector are urging the government to take swift action to ban the illegal trade in donkey hides.
They warn that if the current rate of donkey slaughter continues unchecked, the species could face extinction—an outcome they insist must be prevented at all costs.
According to the stakeholders, the illicit trade is largely driven by some Chinese nationals operating in Ghana’s northern regions, who, with the support of local collaborators, slaughter donkeys for their hides.
These hides are then processed and exported to China for commercial purposes.
One of the leading voices in the campaign is Professor Roger Kanton, an agricultural research scientist and leader of the Fight Against Donkey Extinction Project Team, Ghana.
Speaking during an engagement with the Parliamentary Select Committee on Agriculture, Food, and Cocoa Affairs, Prof. Kanton emphasized the urgent need for government intervention.
He noted that both the African Union (AU) and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) have already outlawed the trade in donkey hides.
However, the practice remains widespread in countries like Ghana and Nigeria.
“The ECOWAS veterinary doctors met in Abuja and issued a communiqué. That was actually the first formal document we received—our Chief Director from Ghana participated in that meeting, and it gave us legal grounds to act.”
“Later, a publication from Dakar further affirmed that ECOWAS member states had agreed that unless this trade is banned, donkeys could become extinct. We used these documents to raise public awareness, and eventually, the AU also issued a similar directive,” Prof. Kanton explained.
The Ghana Medical Relief (GMR), a non-profit humanitarian organisation, has set out to provide free medical care to 10,000 residents of Berekum and surrounding communities in the Bono Region.
The 2025 Medical Outreach Mission has mobilised 110 volunteers, comprising various medical professionals in the United States and Ghana to contribute to quality healthcare delivery in underserved communities.
This year’s mission will take place from Monday, July 21, to Friday, July 25, 2025.
The mission will deliver essential healthcare services, including general medicine, paediatrics, dental care and urology.
Other services are obstetrics and gynaecology, ophthalmology, health education, and the provision of free medications to beneficiaries.
Speaking to journalists at the opening of the Mission in Accra, Dr Samuel Kwapong Owusu, President of the GMR, said the Mission would also provide free Health Insurance registration for patients with chronic medical problems.
He stated that through the Mission, the volunteers had reached out to thousands of patients in remote communities, many of whom had never seen a healthcare provider ever in their lives and mainly relied on preventive healthcare.
“The goal is to get to Berekum and screen as many people as we can and provide services in that community. One of the most common things we see with these missions is complete lack of medical care.
“So, the idea is for people to be seeing their physicians and providers regularly and not wait until when they get sick,” Dr Owusu said.
The GMR appealed to local institutions to support the Mission to expand their reach to benefit more patients in remote communities who need quality healthcare.
Dr Owusu said the goal of the Mission was to set up screening centres in the communities as part of its sustainability plan to support preventive healthcare.
“At GMR, when we screen these patients, they go to the pharmacy, and we start them with sample-free prescriptions. And anyone who has chronic medical problems, they get insurance on the spot,” he said.
Since 2018, the GMR has successfully conducted similar medical missions in communities such as Asiakwa, Anomabo, Atibie, Agogo, Tamale, and Bortianor.
The Organisation’s most recent mission in Bortianor in July 2024 served more than 5,200 patients and supported NHIS registration for 2,500 individuals.
The Mission is entirely driven by volunteers and supported through donations from generous individuals and institutions.
The organisation and its partners seek to directly contribute to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 3, which seeks to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all.

Ghana’s Energy Minister, John Jinapor, has announced that the government is currently engaged in negotiations with Independent Power Producers (IPPs) to restructure payment terms, aiming to alleviate the strain of the country’s mounting energy sector debt.
The total debt stands at approximately $3.1 billion, with $1.7 billion owed specifically to IPPs. MrJinapor expressed optimism that these discussions will yield a mutually beneficial outcome for both the government and the IPPs.

To address the challenges within the energy sector, the government has already initiated several reform measures. These include the implementation of the Distribution Network Improvement Programme, which involves proactive fault detection and rectification across Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) feeders.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has officially approved the 2025 GHALCA Top 4 competition, a much-anticipated pre-season tournament organized by the Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA).

Catherine Afeku [L] and Hawa Koomson will keenly contest for the National Women’s Organiser position
Former Minister of Tourism under the Akufo-Addo administration, Catherine Afeku, appears to have thrown a subtle jab at the former Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Mavis Hawa Koomson, over her comments regarding the qualities required for the next National Women’s Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Both former ministers, who are also former legislators, have openly declared their intentions to contest for the National Women’s Organiser position when nominations open.
Speaking in an interview with the media during last weekend’s National Conference of the NPP, Catherine Afeku — who is a former Member of Parliament for Evalue-Ajomoro-Gwira — made a passionate call for the NPP to elect a woman with both strength and humility as the party’s next National Women’s Organiser.
The eloquent and outspoken politician underscored the need for a leader who combines toughness with patience and possesses the emotional intelligence to connect with women across the country.
“For the National Women’s Organiser position, we want a woman who is tough but has patience. That person must have acumen and be ready to listen to the women,” she said.
She further cautioned against electing individuals whose attitudes may tarnish the image of the party. “We don’t want someone who is arrogant and violent. That person should not bring shame to the party with her conduct,” she stressed.
Madam Afeku, who served as a Cabinet Minister and a Member of Parliament for Evalue-Ajomoro-Gwira, emphasized that the interests and development of women within the party must remain a top priority at all times.
“What is important is that, at all times, the interest of women and their development will be sought and remain a priority,” she added.
Though Catherine Afeku did not mention any names in her submission, some political watchers believe her comments were directed at Mavis Hawa Koomson, who is undoubtedly one of the most popular female politicians in Ghana and is expected to give Afeku stiff competition during the contest.
Critics of Mavis Hawa Koomson have described her as a violent woman, citing her involvement in the chaos that occurred during the 2020 voters registration exercise in Kasoa during which she fired a pistol allegedly in self defence and the recently held parliamentary rerun at Ablekuma North.
The latter incident reportedly resulted in her being physically assaulted by some thugs believed to be affiliated with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) after she allegedly used pepper spray in self-defence.
However, the former Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya West has vehemently denied the assertion that she is a violent person, stressing that she would never endanger lives.
“I have children and brothers. Why would I want to harm someone’s child? I won’t allow anyone to kill, and I certainly won’t do it myself,” she said in a recent interview on Asempa FM monitored by GhanaWeb.
PURC has recovered over GH¢4 million for the Electricity Company of Ghana
The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has recovered over GH¢4 million for the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in the first half of 2025 through customer complaint interventions.
Out of 700 complaints lodged between January and June in the Greater Accra Region, the PURC resolved 689, representing 98 per cent. These resolutions resulted in payments totalling GH¢4,295,445.64 to ECG and GH¢173,986.60 to customers.
Madam Gifty Bruce-Nelson, Greater Accra Regional Manager of PURC, said a combined GH¢4,469,432.25 was disbursed to utility providers and consumers to promote sustainability and satisfaction.
“Quality of service tops the lists of complaints with 450 complaints where customers have challenges including frequent outages, faulty transformers, broken poles, faces going off, no flow of water and low pressure on water flow amongst others,” she said.
Madam Bruce-Nelson noted that complaints also included billing discrepancies, malfunctioning meters, and property damage due to outages.
Most reports were submitted electronically (406), with others via phone (117), walk-ins (56), written submissions (53), toll-free calls (21), and field visits (4).
Compared to the same period in 2024, 804 complaints were made, with 233 electronic submissions.
That year, ECG recovered GH¢11,441,875.55 and customers received GH¢552,972.69 through PURC’s efforts.
In her mid-year briefing, Madam Bruce-Nelson indicated that 555 complaints (79 per cent) were against ECG, 109 (16 per cent) against Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL), and 36 (5 per cent) against customers.
She said the Commission had intensified public education efforts, conducted 20 visits to ECG service centres, and engaged in community, prepaid, and industrial monitoring.
“Power supply in all the communities visited was quite stable except for the Volo community which complained of frequent power outages which sometimes last for two days for power to be restored.
“Most postpaid meters in the community are SHEP meters which are not captured in the ECG system,” she noted.
In 2024, ECG recovered GH¢29,080,692.20 from 17 institutions out of a total debt of GH¢33,807,691.20, and customers received GH¢867,535.67.
That year, 1,444 complaints were lodged, with 99 per cent resolved.
Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, Member of Parliament for Ofoase Ayirebi and a member of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Constitutional and Legal Committee, has dismissed a viral video suggesting former President John Agyekum Kufuor has been sidelined by the party as doctored and misleading.
Speaking on The Point of View with Bernard Avle on Channel One TV on Monday, July 21, Oppong Nkrumah said the footage had been selectively edited to push a false narrative.
“That video is a controversial video. You’re somebody who is very skilled in this enterprise. Go and watch that video and see how it has been edited. I won’t make any further comments. Go and watch and see how it’s been edited. And you can make a judgment for yourself whether it is the full words that he spoke or whether it has been truncated for a particular purpose. We’re in a time of competition,” he said.
He cautioned that such tactics by individuals within the party to create division through manipulated content were both dangerous and counterproductive.
“This attempt by some party persons to create an impression by using some of these videos, heavily edited, I challenge you to go and look at the video where they bring in the red lines to cut out what he’s saying in detail.
“This attempt to use former leaders to pitch them against current leadership should stop. There’s not a single council meeting we have gone to that we have not invited former President Kufuor,” Oppong Nkrumah warned.
His remarks come amid heightened concerns over internal tensions within the NPP, particularly following the absence of both former Presidents Kufuor and Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo at the party’s National Delegates Conference held on July 19.

The Ghana Union of Traders Associations (GUTA) has issued a warning of nationwide demonstrations should the government fail to take decisive action against the increasing infiltration of foreigners into the domestic retail sector.
The Association argues that retail trading is explicitly reserved for Ghanaian citizens under national law and laments the growing disregard for this provision.
According to Section 27(1) of the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre Act, 2013 (Act 865), non-Ghanaians are prohibited from engaging in retail trade, hawking, petty trading, or operating in stalls and markets.
Yet, foreign nationals continue to visibly flout this restriction, especially in major trading centres, sparking mounting frustration among local traders.
Traders, particularly mobile phone dealers and shopkeepers, have expressed dismay over what they describe as weak enforcement of the law, allowing foreign operators to undercut prices and threaten the sustainability of Ghanaian businesses.
In an interview with Citi FM, the Greater Accra Regional Chairman of GUTA, Nana Kwabena Peprah, criticised the government’s inaction and warned of growing agitation among members.
“We’ve not had any response from the government after the protest at Circle, neither have we had any invitation from the government to dialogue on the issues. Due to the protest at Circle, we are getting feedback from all other sectors including the regions,” he stated.
“People are agitating and the government must immediately take action or else, GUTA members will begin demonstrations on those issues.”
The threat follows a recent protest at Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra and comes amid renewed debate about the country’s retail trade policy and its enforcement mechanisms.
GUTA has cautioned that if regulatory authorities fail to rigorously implement the GIPC Act’s provisions, the consequence could be widespread unrest within Ghana’s commercial landscape.

As the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) convened on Saturday, July 19, to refine its constitution, a foundational step to strengthen the elephant to pull down the umbrella in 2028, another intriguing narrative unfolded on the sidelines, capturing public attention.
Joy News got the NPP 2024 Parliamentary Candidate for the Aowin Constituency, Fuseini Yakubu Abanga (NPP Abanga), for an interview, leading to bombshells, turning the minds of viewers to relatives in different political organisations.
Politics is often deemed a brutal arena, yet some families have masterfully navigated its complexities, demonstrating remarkable influence across the political spectrum.
Political dynasties are a global phenomenon, and Ghana is no exception, with families often nurturing successive generations into positions of power. Beyond generational succession, some families have strategically extended their reach into multiple political affiliations.
Former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill famously remarked, “Politics is not a game. It is an earnest business.”
Consciously or unconsciously, these families embody the adage: “Never put all your eggs in one basket,” perhaps as a safeguard against Ghana’s often winner-takes-all political environment.
This article delves into prominent Ghanaian families with representation across the nation’s political divide.
The Abanga Twins
Alhassan Yakubu Abanga (NDC) and Fuseini Yakubu Abanga (NPP) are identical twins who, despite sharing a womb, birth, and upbringing, find themselves on opposite ends of Ghana’s political spectrum.
Their striking resemblance often makes them indistinguishable, leading Fuseini to adopt the moniker ‘Abanga NPP’.
The twins gained prominence in 2022 when both decided to elevate their political careers.
Alhassan successfully secured a Vice Chairman position within the National Democratic Congress (NDC), having previously played various roles for the NDC’s Tertiary Educational Institutions Network (TEIN).
Conversely, Fuseini’s bid for the NPP’s National Youth Organiser position was unsuccessful.
Prior to his parliamentary candidacy, Abanga NPP was a key official of the Tertiary Students Confederacy (TESCON) of the NPP and has been attached to the Office of the General Secretary of the NPP since 2015.
In the last elections, he contested the Aowin seat in the Western North Region but lost, a setback he attributed to his twin brother.
The Kamara relatives: Boniface and Baba
Alhaji Abubakar Boniface Siddique, a veteran of the governing NPP, shares a familial bond with Alhaji Baba Kamara, a prominent figure in the opposition NDC.
Alhaji Siddique has served in various capacities within the NPP administration, including Minister of State at the Office of the Vice President, former Minister for Inner Cities and Zongo Development, and Minister of Youth, Labour, and Employment (2005-2007). He also previously served as the Member of Parliament for Salaga.
Alhaji Baba Kamara, a businessman, held the influential position of National Security Advisor to former President John Mahama.
Notably, Alhaji Siddique has openly stated that his political affiliation did not hinder his personal well-being, even when the NDC was in power, thanks to the support, both financial and otherwise, from his ‘brother’ on the other side.
At a 2017 town hall meeting, Alhaji Siddique candidly addressed party foot soldiers embroiled in partisan conflicts, elaborating on the benefits of having a relative in the opposing party.
“We will never starve in my house. My party, the NPP, may have been in opposition, but I was not. When the NDC was in power, I didn’t lack anything. When I go to my brother, Kamara, for money, he will give me. Today, I am in power [and] when he needs something, he will call me. We speak all the time. So think about it,” Alhaji Siddique advised the gathering.
The Jinapor Brothers
The highly revered Paramount Chief of the Buipe Traditional Area, Abdulai Jinapor II, should be a proud father because he can almost always point to a son in government, considering Ghana’s two-horse political governance.
Go to the opposition NDC, and you will find a Jinapor, turn to the governing NPP; there is also a Jinapor – these two parties have shared the spoils for the past eight elections under Ghana’s Fourth Republic.
The brothers are not mere members of the two political giants.
John Jinapor is MP for Yapei Kusawgu and serves as Minister of Energy and Green Transition.
His younger brother, Samuel Jinapor, is currently the MP for Damongo, a seat he snatched from the NDC’s Adam Mutawakilu, an associate of his brother.
The Mahama, Otiko, and Joyce Bawa Triangle
Former President John Mahama has a long and distinguished career within the NDC, culminating in his ascent to the presidency.
His cousin, Joyce Bawa-Mogtari, has also excelled within the same party, earning the admirable tag of ‘Communicator Extraordinaire’ for her impeccable execution of duties as Special Advisor and aide to President Mahama.
A highly regarded lawyer, Mrs. Bawa-Mogtari is often cited as a potential female presidential candidate in Ghana after holding previous ministerial roles, including deputy for the transport ministry.
Within the same family, Mrs. Bawa-Mogtari’s sister, the strong-willed and vocal Otiko Afisa Djaba, aligned with the elephant, ditching the umbrella.
Ms. Djaba, a former Women’s Organiser of the NPP and former Minister of Gender, stepped down from public service after declining an appointment as Ghana’s Ambassador to Italy in 2018 under then-President Nana Akufo-Addo.

The Ramadans: Samira, Abu, and Others
The Ramadan family is one of Ghana’s most prominent, with members extending their political influence across the PNC, NPP, and NDC.
Alhaji Ahmed Ramadan, a former chairman of the PNC, was appointed Ghana’s first Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates by President Akufo-Addo in 2017.
He passed on his political legacy to his three children: Abu Ramadan, former Youth Organiser of the PNC and former Deputy Director-General of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO); Mohammed Adamu Ramadan, Member of Parliament for Adentan (NDC); and former Second Lady Samira Bawumia (NPP).
Mrs. Bawumia is frequently mentioned in discussions about potential female presidential candidates.
While not a conventional politician in appearance, her political acumen was evident during the 2020 elections.
She is particularly remembered for her electrifying 2016 speech, which many credit with delivering a decisive blow to then-President Mahama and the NDC, contributing to the NPP’s first-round victory.
FormerVice President Bawumia and His Father
The name Bawumia is synonymous with former Vice President and 2024 Presidential Candidate of the NPP, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
However, before Dr. Bawumia’s rise, his father, Alhaji Mumuni Bawumia, had already forged a significant political path.
Unlike many of the families highlighted, the father and son held differing political ideologies.
While Dr. Bawumia champions the NPP, his father’s political journey saw him as a member of the Northern People’s Party and later the United Party.
He famously crossed carpets to the Convention People’s Party in 1958 while still in parliament, subsequently serving in several ministerial roles under Kwame Nkrumah’s governments.
Alhaji Mumuni Bawumia, a lawyer and the paramount chief of Kperiga, also served as chairman of the Council of State in the Fourth Republic from 1993 to 2000.
The Ayarigas
Hassan Ayariga, the eldest of the three brothers, was the People’s National Convention (PNC) presidential candidate for the 2012 elections before breaking ranks to form the All People’s Congress (APC).
His younger brothers, however, have remained steadfastly loyal to the NDC.
Mahama Ayariga serves as the Member of Parliament for Bawku Central and holds the position of Majority Leader in Parliament.
His extensive political experience includes roles as former Minister of Information and Media Relations and former Minister of Youth and Sports under the first Mahama administration.
The youngest, Osman Ayariga, is the NDC Deputy National Youth Organiser.
The Naabu Brothers
Despite being brothers, Daniel Bugri Naabu and Joseph Bipoba Naabu maintain distinct political affiliations.
Bugri is a staunch NPP member, while Bipoba proudly aligns with the NDC.
The vociferous Bugri gained prominence after defeating Haruna Tia Sulemana to become the Northern Regional NPP Chairman in 2014.
He is credited with increasing the party’s parliamentary seats in the region from 10 to 13 in the 2016 elections.
However, a controversial attempt to garner sympathy votes in 2018 backfired, leading to his loss in the re-election bid for the Northern Regional Chairman.
He was later appointed to the National Council of the NPP and, even as the Paramount Chief of Namong in the Northern Region, he remains influential within the party, having publicly endorsed Dr. Bawumia’s presidential bid in 2020 with the declaration, “With Bawumia, we win finish.”
His junior brother, Bipoba, served two terms as the NDC Member of Parliament for Yunyoo from 2012 but lost in 2020 to Oscar Liwal. His allegiance to the NDC remains unwavering.
Yaw Osafo-Maafo and Dr. I.K. Adjei-Maafo
Yaw Osafo-Maafo is a familiar figure in Ghana’s contemporary political landscape, much like his senior brother, Dr. I.K. Adjei-Maafo, was in the 1980s and early 1990s.
Yaw Osafo-Maafo served as the Senior Presidential Advisor to the Akufo-Addo government, wielding significant power and influence across various sectors.
He was also the Senior Minister of the Republic of Ghana from 2017 to 2021 and a Member of Parliament for Akim Oda from 1997 to 2009, having previously held cabinet roles, including Finance Minister, in the Kufuor Administration (2001-2009).
Few people are aware that his brother, Dr. I.K. Adjei-Maafo, served as Secretary for Agriculture during the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC) era.
Dr. Adjei-Maafo’s role as a government officer in charge of Cocoa Schedule extended from the PNDC into the early period of the NDC government, which assumed office in 1992.
Kojo Yankah (NDC) and Prof. Kwesi Yankah (NPP)
Another intriguing family dynamic exists within the Yankah household, with two distinguished intellectuals on opposing political sides.
Kojo Yankah is a former Member of Parliament for Agona East, a seat he won in 1992 on the ticket of the NDC. He served as Central Regional Minister and later Ashanti Regional Minister under the Rawlings administration.
The renowned statesman is also the founder and president of the African University College of Communications (AUCC) and a former editor of the Daily Graphic.
Several years later, his brother, Professor Kwesi Yankah, was appointed Minister of State in charge of tertiary education in 2017 by President Nana Akufo-Addo. Professor Yankah openly stated his long-standing membership in the NPP.
He also served as the Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana and the president of Central University. The accomplished author and academic was inducted as a fellow of the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1999.
Peter Ala Adjetey and Larry Adjetey
For older Ghanaians, the Rt. Hon. Peter Ala Adjetey is a familiar name, having presided over Ghana’s parliament from 2001 to 2005 under the Kufuor regime.
The late statesman was also the Member of Parliament for Kpeshie in the Third Republic and the United National Convention (UNC) Parliamentary group leader during that period.
In 1995, he became Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), a position he held until 1998.
However, throughout these years, his son, Larry Adjetey, aligned himself with the rivals of his father’s party.
An experienced lawyer called to the Ghana Bar in 1984, Larry, plays a significant role as a leading member of the NDC.
In 2009, he was vocal in defending the Mills administration’s efforts to retrieve state vehicles and properties from past NPP ministers and appointees, urging the public not to perceive it as a “witch-hunt.” He was also named as part of the NDC’s legal team ahead of the 2020 elections.

The Greater Accra Regional Security Council (REGSEC) is set to resume the demolition of unauthorized structures on protected Ramsar sites in Sakumono, Klagon, and Tema today, July 22, 2025.
This latest phase of the operation follows recent flooding in the Tema West Municipality, which resulted in significant destruction of property.
Authorities have attributed part of the flooding to the encroachment on wetlands, particularly within the Sakumono Ramsar site, where buildings have been constructed on watercourses.
REGSEC, in collaboration with the National Security and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), has already demolished several illegal structures in the area.
The affected buildings were located within designated wetland zones, which serve as natural flood control systems.
The ongoing demolitions are part of efforts to prevent future disasters and restore the integrity of the Ramsar sites.
Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Ocloo, is expected to lead a team of security officials to continue the operation this morning.
The Mankessim Circuit Court has ordered a pregnancy test to be conducted on 40-year-old Rebecca Ofori, accused of stealing an 11-month-old baby at the Ajumako Market in the Central Region.
Rebecca Ofori, who appeared before the court presided over by Justice Gloria Naa Bortoh Laryea, admitted to the offense of stealing the baby, as captured on CCTV camera.
She admitted to the offence when she first appeared before the court on Monday, July 21, 2025, after being arraigned by the police.
Following her admission of guilt, the court ordered the test to ascertain her status, whether she is pregnant or not, so that a sentence could be passed.
The report is expected to be presented to the court on Tuesday, July 22, when the accused will make her second appearance before the court.
40-year-old woman Rebecca Ofori was captured on a CCTV camera stealing an 11-month-old baby at the Ajumako Market in the Ajumako-Enyan-Essiam district in the Central Region.
She secretly sent the innocent baby from the Central Region all the way to Tarkwa Benso in the Western Region, under the pretext that she had adopted her from her mother.
However, Rebecca’s account turned out to be false when news of her stealing the baby, as captured on CCTV, went viral, prompting suspicions from people within her neighborhood.
She was, therefore, reported to the police in Tarkwa, who arrested her and informed the Ajumako police, who had earlier sent an intel about the missing child.

The Tumu Traditional Council, in consultation with the other Traditional Councils in the Sissala area, has taken a decisive step to safeguard the livelihoods of maize farmers in the Sissala area by announcing a new minimum price for maize.
This follows series of complaints from major maize farmers to the traditional council after a sharp drop in the market price, which seems to threaten the economic well-being of farmers across the maize-producing communities.
A statement issued by Kuoro Richard Babini Kanton VI, the President of the Tumu Traditional Council, in collaboration with the Gwollu, Zini, Welembelle, Pulima, Lambussie, Bawiesebelle, Banu, Kojikperie and the Funsi Traditional Councils, said the price of maize had dropped from GHC 550 to as low as GH¢400 per 100kg bag in recent weeks.
This significant drop, despite the high quality of maize produced in the Sissala area, has left many farmers struggling to meet their production costs and abandoning their farms.
The statement said, “The recent drop in price is unacceptable and unsustainable for the farmers.
“We cannot stand by while our hardworking farmers, who produce some of the most sought-after maize in the world, are exploited and impoverished while input prices remain the same”, it added.
The situation led to consultations with some major buyers in the area, including the West African Regional Company (WARC), private buyers, where the traditional council set a new minimum price of GHc 500 per 100kg bag of maize, effective July 8, 2025.
Farmers have, therefore, been strongly advised not to sell their produce below this price to any buyer or individual, or company.
The chiefs emphasised that the move was meant not only to stabilise income for farmers but also to ensure that agricultural production remained sustainable in the area and to protect vulnerable farmers.
The directive comes amid growing concerns that if the price crash is not addressed, many farmers may be forced to abandon maize farming, which forms the backbone of the local economy.
The statement called on all stakeholders, including buyers, farmers, and government authorities, to support this effort to protect one of Ghana’s most productive maize hubs.
Mr Mahamud Aduna, the President of the Sissala Union, also a commercial maize farmer, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Tumu that most maize farmers were being priced out by middlemen who manipulated the market, leaving little for the farmer after production.
He said, from conservative estimates, the Sissala area’s production of maize and other grains was more than half of Ghana’s maize requirements.
Aduna urged the government to introduce special initiatives to optimise maize production for the country and the sub-region.
He also appealed to the government to pay attention to the area by providing access roads and agricultural mechanisation to reduce the reliance on labour intensive production.
Alhaji Kasim Buwale of the Sissala area farmers’ Association told the GNA that they had thousands of tonnes of maize piled up, but selling them now at GHC400 would erode their production capital.
He gave the assurance that the Sissala area could produce enough maize for the country if supported.
The Ministry of Energy has emerged as the sector with the highest financial irregularities in the 2024 Auditor-General’s Report, accounting for GH¢15.8 billion—representing a staggering 86% of total public sector irregularities recorded for the year.
According to the Auditor-General’s breakdown of financial breaches across Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), the Ministry of Energy alone was responsible for GH¢15,832,975,487 out of the GH¢18.42 billion in total irregularities for the year ending December 31, 2024.
The bulk of these irregularities stemmed from contract and procurement breaches, as well as store and tax-related irregularities, underscoring persistent issues in how public contracts are awarded and executed within the sector.
At the centre of the issue is the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), whose financial underreporting and deficient internal control systems accounted for some of the most serious breaches cited in the Auditor-General’s 2024 report.
In 2023, ECG understated its revenue by over GH¢2.95 billion. While the company actually collected GH¢11.59 billion, it declared only GH¢8.64 billion to the Ministry of Energy and other oversight institutions.
This development is particularly concerning given the country’s ongoing energy sector recovery efforts and the large public investments being channeled into infrastructure, electricity access, and energy transition projects.
While the Auditor-General’s report clarified that a substantial portion of the irregularities is classified as recoverable, the report strongly urges enforcement of financial management rules, enhanced accountability, and a stronger role for internal audits in MDAs.
The report stated: “We recommended strict implementation of our recommendations to ensure financial discipline in the management of public resources.”
The Ministry of Energy’s figure dwarfs irregularities recorded by other key institutions, pointing to an urgent need for reforms in procurement processes and contract supervision in the sector.
The findings come at a time when the government is also under pressure to meet IMF performance benchmarks and restore fiscal stability. As such, these revelations are likely to influence budgetary allocations and sectoral oversight decisions in the second half of 2025.

Former Member of Parliament for Manhyia North, Collins Owusu Amankwah, has accused the government and the Inspector General of Police (IGP) of engaging in selective arrest and detention regarding political issues.
According to the former legislator, the government and the police administration appear to have a malicious mission meant to gag and intimidate members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
His allegations come on the heels of the arrest of one Francis Asante, alias Nana Kwasi, who in a viral video described himself as the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the Delta Forces vigilante group associated with the NPP.
Speaking to the media after a failed attempt to secure bail for the suspect, Amankwah described his inability to get the suspect from the claws of the police as politically motivated.
He explained that after the suspect’s caution statement had been taken by the police, “a young man claiming to be an official with national security came in and said he had been ordered from above to come for him.”
“We are calling on the government to, as a matter of urgency, put an immediate end to arbitrary arrests that are ongoing, arbitrary detention, political intimidation, and acts of bias,” he said.
He alleged that the suspect had been subjected to inhumane treatment while in detention, cautioning that power must be exercised with integrity, accountability, and human dignity.
He accused the government of engaging in selective application of justice, a phenomenon he termed as dangerous for national cohesion.
The self-acclaimed former chairman of Delta Force in the Ashanti Region was picked up in Kumasi by the National Security and transferred to Accra, where he has been in detention.
A report by GBC indicated that he was “arrested in connection with an alleged threat he made in a video that has since gone viral on social media”.
It has been reported that the suspect claimed in the said video that someone would be killed during the upcoming by-election at Akwatia.
According to GBC’s source, “the arrest of Swanzy, seen in a military camouflage in the video, is a proactive measure to ensure life and property are protected before, during, and after the polls.”

A flagbearer hopeful of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, has stated that he holds no animosity towards the party’s 2024 flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, over being overlooked for the running mate slot ahead of the general elections.
Speaking in an interview on Channel One TV on July 21, 2025, Dr Adutwum dismissed reports suggesting he was upset about being passed over in favour of Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh.
When asked if he had any issues with Dr Bawumia over the snub, he responded, “No, if I were angry, I wouldn’t have gone to campaign for Bawumia. Nobody campaigned for him more than me,” he stated.
He further highlighted his efforts in promoting Dr Bawumia’s vision, particularly in education.
“Go and look at the campaign we mounted. Go and see what we did, talking about Bawumia’s vision for education. Who was able to get the national media, at my own expense, to capture Bawumia’s vision for Ghana? I’m not petty.”
Dr Adutwum emphasised that the choice of a running mate was entirely Dr Bawumia’s decision, which he fully respected.
“He chose whoever he wanted; that was his judgment call. It wasn’t my judgment. This time, I’m saying it’s me representing myself. I’m not waiting for somebody to choose or not to choose,” he noted.
Dr Bawumia picked former Energy and Education Minister, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, as his running mate for the 2024 elections.
However, the NPP lost to the National Democratic Congress (NDC), led by President John Dramani Mahama.
Meanwhile, Dr Adutwum has announced his intention to contest the NPP’s flagbearership ahead of the 2028 general elections.

In an interview on JoyNews’ PM Express on Monday, July 21, the party stalwart stressed that the stakes for the NPP and Ghana are too high for that kind of superficial approach.
“People are coming out there because they satisfy the qualification and eligibility criteria as set out in the party’s constitution or even the national constitution,” he acknowledged.
The context of his remarks followed a comment by host Evans Mensah suggesting that the party’s limited expansion of its electoral college may have opened the door to heavy monetisation of the primaries.
The host noted that the new system, while larger than before, still leaves room for well-funded aspirants to target delegates and influence outcomes.
“But you see, whoever should be the president of this country, we are not looking at just the qualification, eligibility criteria for whoever should be our president.”
His critique, directed at the party’s internal processes and the character of the emerging contest, signalled a deeper concern: the growing focus on who can contest rather than who should lead.
“We are not just looking for a flagbearer,” the former Suame MP declared. “We are looking for a president or a presidential candidate.”
Referencing a pivotal moment in the NPP’s political history, Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu recalled the warning of party elder Kwame Pianim in 2007, when 17 aspirants vied to succeed President J.A. Kufuor.
“Pianim stepped in and made a profound statement that ‘NPP, you’re not looking for a flagbearer. People seem to think that we are looking for a flagbearer. As for the flagbearership, any idiot could become the flagbearer.’ But we are looking beyond the flagbearer, because you are looking for a presidential candidate who ultimately will become the president of this country.”

Financial irregularities in the operations of public boards, corporations, and statutory institutions surged by 109% in 2024, rising from GH¢8.8 billion in 2023 to GH¢18.4 billion, according to the latest Auditor-General’s report.
The sharp spike reverses a downward trend observed over the past two years and raises fresh concerns about worsening financial oversight and weak public fund management.
The report indicates that irregularities increased across all categories except payroll-related issues, which declined significantly from GH¢8.7 million in 2023 to GH¢191,601 in 2024.
Of the total GH¢18.4 billion flagged, GH¢15.57 billion is classified as recoverable. These include unpaid taxes, locked-up investments, outstanding loans to employees, inter-agency debts, and unretired imprest.
The remaining GH¢2.84 billion relates to administrative issues such as procurement infractions and procedural delays. While these do not amount to direct financial loss, they reflect poor compliance with public financial management regulations.
The Auditor-General emphasized the need for urgent action to address the lapses:
“We recommended strict implementation of our recommendations to ensure financial discipline in the management of public resources.”
With mounting pressure on public finances, the report reinforces calls for stronger oversight and timely recovery of misused or outstanding public funds.
Energy Ministry accounts for 86% of 2024 public sector irregularities – Auditor-General
Ghana’s Energy Minister, John Jinapor, has announced that the government is currently engaged in negotiations with Independent Power Producers (IPPs) to restructure payment terms, aiming to alleviate the strain of the country’s mounting energy sector debt.
The total debt stands at approximately $3.1 billion, with $1.7 billion owed specifically to IPPs. MrJinapor expressed optimism that these discussions will yield a mutually beneficial outcome for both the government and the IPPs.
Reforms
To address the challenges within the energy sector, the government has already initiated several reform measures. These include the implementation of the Distribution Network Improvement Programme, which involves proactive fault detection and rectification across Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) feeders.
Additionally, the government has terminated 202 underperforming contracts with ECG, valued at $227 million, £1.17 million, and €4.08 million.
The introduction of the new Zeus billing system within a three-month timeframe is another key initiative aimed at enhancing revenue assurance.
Furthermore, the government is ensuring full compliance with the Cash Waterfall Mechanism (CWM) to guarantee timely payments to power producers and fuel suppliers.

Recent data highlights some positive trends, such as ECG’s record revenue performance in June 2025, which reached GHS 1.678 billion. This represents a significant year-on-year increase of 47.3 per cent.
The Cabinet has also approved private sector participation (PSP) in electricity distribution through a multiple leasehold model, a move expected to bring additional expertise and investment into the sector.
Enhanced gas supply commitments from major partners like N-Gas, ENI, and the Jubilee partners are set to ensure a more reliable fuel source for power generation.
Despite these efforts, the energy sector continues to face structural inefficiencies that place considerable pressure on the national budget. Under-recoveries in the power sector are currently estimated at around two per cent of GDP, which is roughly four times the annual capital investment in infrastructure.
Fiscal space
Participants in a recent high-level discussion emphasized the urgent need for accelerated reforms to address these challenges. Resolving the sector’s issues would not only free up critical fiscal space but also unlock vital investments necessary for driving inclusive and sustainable economic transformation.

The Ashanti Regional Communication Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Paul Yandoh, has apologised to the former Director-General of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), Ernest Thompson, over comments he made about him.
According to Yandoh, he had earlier claimed that a court case involving Ernest Thompson had been cancelled by the Attorney-General, a statement which prompted Thompson to sue him at the High Court.
Speaking during a panel discussion on Pure FM Kumasi, which was shared on social media, Yandoh publicly apologised to Thompson and appealed to him to withdraw the case.
The NPP communicator pleaded with fellow panel members to intervene on his behalf, expressing regret over his comments.
“Please talk to him for me to have mercy on me. The courtroom is not a nice place to be,” he said.
Yandoh further complained that NPP members were being silenced through legal actions, which he believes is affecting their freedom of speech.
Expressing his frustration, Yandoh stated, “As I speak, I have been taken to court. Ernest Thompson has taken me to court because I said the Attorney-General had withdrawn his case.
“I don’t understand. If the courtroom was a pleasant place, would his case have been cancelled? Your case has been cancelled, but you have taken me to court, what should I go and do there? The court is not a nice place.”
He added that he was willing to apologise because of the seriousness of the matter.
“If they are taking me to court, why won’t I apologise? I will apologise because this is the High Court. So please, talk to him for me because the courtroom is not a nice place. He should leave me to have my freedom,” Yandoh pleaded.

Owusu Amankwah has alleged that the detained Delta Force kingpin, Francis Asante, has been held for days without food.
Speaking to the media about his inability to secure bail for the suspect, the former legislator alleged that the suspect has become “motionless” due to the fact that he has not been given food.
He described the situation of the detained Delta Force officer in custody as “inhumane” and slammed the government for using state security to intimidate members of the NPP.
He alleged, “What the young man is going through is inhumane; what he is going through is pathetic. No food has been given to him, and it appears that he’s becoming motionless”.
He expressed his disappointment in the Inspector General of Police (IGP) because, according to him, the IGP has a high interest in the arrest of the Delta Force officer and his continuous detention.
“We are calling on the government to, as a matter of urgency, put an immediate end to arbitrary arrests that are ongoing, arbitrary detention, political intimidation, and acts of bias,” he said.
He cautioned the government to exercise the powers of the state that have been vested in it with extra care and caution, adding that capricious use of power is a recipe for dangerous resentments.

Commercial banks are expecting a 200-basis point cut in the Bank of Ghana’s (BoG) Monetary Policy Rate (MPR) ahead of the 125th Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting.
The anticipated reduction is expected to ease capital costs for banks and trigger lower interest rates, encouraging lending to businesses and individuals and thereby boosting economic growth.
John Awuah, Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Association of Banks, expressed optimism that recent improvements in key macroeconomic indicators—declining inflation and a stabilising exchange rate—would prompt the Central Bank to act decisively.
He made the remarks in response to a Ghana News Agency query during a media engagement at the 11th Absa-UPSA Law School quarterly banking roundtable in Accra on Thursday evening July 17, 2025.
The MPC is scheduled to meet from 28th to 30th July, with the new policy rate to be announced on 30th July.
The rate currently stands at 29 per cent, a level of concern for commercial banks, small enterprises and individual borrowers.
“The signals are encouraging. We believe the economy is ripe for a reduction in the policy rate by at least 200 basis points, which will translate into more competitive lending rates across the commercial banking sector,” Awuah stated.
A 200-basis point cut would lower the benchmark interest rate from 29 to 27 per cent, potentially making borrowing more affordable for businesses and consumers.
“If the policy rate moves in directions southwest, definitely we are going to have a kind of reduced lending rate,” Awuah added, indicating a likely reduction in commercial banks’ lending rates.
On Thursday, 17th July, the MPC held an emergency meeting to review economic developments ahead of its formal session.
The Committee noted that headline inflation had declined for six consecutive months to 13.7 per cent in June 2025. The Cedi appreciated by 42.6 per cent year-to-date against the US dollar, while GDP growth reached 5.3 per cent in the first quarter of 2025.
Provisional data showed a trade surplus of US$5.6 billion and a current account surplus of US$3.4 billion in the first half of 2025, up from US$1.4 billion and US$283.1 million, respectively, during the same period in 2024.
Gross international reserves rose to US$11.1 billion at the end of June 2025, equivalent to 4.8 months of import cover, compared with US$8.98 billion at end-2024.
On the global front, the Committee highlighted uncertainty, a weakening growth outlook—with projections slowing to 2.8 per cent in 2025 from 3.3 per cent in 2024—tight financial conditions, and disinflation.
“Overall, the Committee noted significant improvements in the current macroeconomic conditions and the positive outlook. Inflation expectations are broadly anchored, external buffers have strengthened, and confidence in the economy is returning,” the BoG stated following the emergency meeting.
Meanwhile, BoG Governor, Dr Johnson Pandit Asiama, has raised concerns over the persistent dollarisation of transactions in sectors such as real estate, education, and luxury retail.
“This practice not only violates legal tender laws but also undermines confidence in the Cedi,” he remarked at a Graphic Business/Stanbic breakfast meeting, signalling upcoming policy measures to strengthen foreign exchange management.

The Bank of Ghana is being urged to intensify public education and enforcement efforts to promote the use of lower-denominated cedi coins and notes.
According to financial analysts, the widespread rejection of these smaller denominations is contributing to inflationary pressures and eroding public confidence in the local currency.
Speaking to Citi Business News as Ghana marks the 60th anniversary of the cedi, Nelson Cudjoe Kuagbedzi, Head of Finance at Merban Capital, explained that vendors’ refusal to accept these denominations is having a ripple effect on the economy.
“One of the challenges confronting the usage of the cedi as a legal tender in Ghana has to do with the fact that both buyers and sellers do reject the lower-denominated currencies,” he said.
“Now the effect of the rejection is that these lower-denominated values induce inflationary pressures, because basic goods become more expensive.”
He continued, “So anytime these currencies are rejected, prices shoot up for basic goods and this induces inflationary pressures. Again, the rejection of the lower denominated currencies also induces loss of confidence in the cedi as a legal tender.”
Kuagbedzi called on the Bank of Ghana to launch an aggressive public sensitisation campaign to reinforce the legitimacy and continued value of these denominations.
“So I think the Bank of Ghana needs to embark on aggressive education, sensitisation and conscientisation of the public to the fact that this lower denominated currency still remains a legal tender for the purposes of business transaction and anybody who refuses to accept this legal tender is actually going contrary to the laws of the land.”
The Ghana Union of Traders Associations (GUTA) is threatening a nationwide protest if government fails to take decisive action against the continued participation of foreigners in the local retail sector.
They maintain, retail trade is an area explicitly reserved for Ghanaians under the law.
Section 27(1) of the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre Act, 2013 (Act 865), prohibits non-citizens and foreign-owned enterprises from engaging in retail trade, petty trading, hawking, or selling goods in stalls and markets across the country.
However, the persistent presence of foreign nationals in these activities especially in urban trading hubs has led to rising frustration among Ghanaian traders.
According to affected traders who are mostly mobile phone dealers and shop owners, lax enforcement of this legal provision has emboldened foreign nationals to operate illegally, undercutting local businesses and undermining their competitiveness.
Speaking to Citi Business News, the Greater Accra Regional Chairman of GUTA, Nana Kwabena Peprah, warned that the government’s silence in the face of repeated calls for enforcement is fuelling discontent among its members.
“We’ve not had any response from the government after the protest at Circle, neither have we had any invitation from the government to dialogue on the issues. Due to the protest at Circle, we are getting feedback from all other sectors including the regions.
“People are agitating and the government must immediately take action or else, GUTA members will begin demonstrations on those issues.”
The warning follows a demonstration by traders last week and comes amid renewed concerns of Ghana’s retail policy and its implications for local businesses.
The inability or unwillingness of regulatory bodies to implement key provisions of the GIPC Act, if left unresolved, GUTA insists, could lead to widespread unrest within Ghana’s commercial corridors.

Four suspects who had been standing trial for the 2019 murder of Josephine Asante, former Marketing and Public Affairs Manager of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), have been discharged.
The TDC District Magistrate Court in Tema, presided over by Benedicta Antwi, acted on the advice of the Attorney-General’s Department, which cited insufficient evidence to continue with the prosecution.
Those discharged include the deceased’s houseboy, Christian Adjei, along with Richard Kwabena Kwakye, Dominic Owusu, and Frederick Owusu Oppong.
Chief Inspector Hilda Asante Sarkodie, who led the prosecution, told the court that the Attorney-General’s advice — signed by Principal State Attorney Joshua Sackey — concluded that the suspects had been arrested and charged based merely on suspicion.
The advice emphasised that suspicion without corroborating material evidence was inadequate to sustain criminal charges.
The report further questioned the credibility of the prosecution’s case and cast doubt on the identification of the actual perpetrator, leading to the recommendation that all four be discharged.
Josephine Asante was found murdered under mysterious circumstances at her home at Emefs Estates near Afienya on January 13, 2019, shortly after returning from a GPHA staff party.
The investigation has since been plagued by multiple arrests, re-arrests, and prolonged procedural delays, with no clarity on who committed the crime.
While the court’s decision brought relief to the accused persons, it sparked outrage and disappointment among the deceased’s family, who have long demanded justice.
The court advised the bereaved family to consult a lawyer and consider petitioning the Attorney-General if they were dissatisfied with the decision.
Speaking to Joy News after the ruling, Josephine’s brother, Robert Tandoh, expressed frustration and disbelief.
“I’m shocked but not surprised. It’s taken us five years to get here, five years of investigations, only to be told there’s insufficient evidence. What exactly was the police investigating all this time?” he questioned.
Mr. Tandoh criticised the Attorney-General’s advice for failing to recommend further investigations, calling it a blow to the family’s search for justice.
“This just confirms what I’ve always suspected — that in Ghana, you can get away with anything,” he said.
Despite the setback, he affirmed the family’s determination to continue pursuing justice and their intent to obtain court documents for possible legal action.
He also called on the media and the public to help keep the case in the spotlight.
“We won’t forget, and we won’t stop. But we need your help to keep this case from fading into silence,” he added.
The case remains unresolved, casting a shadow over Ghana’s criminal justice system and highlighting the frustrations of victims’ families in high-profile murder investigations.
Josephine’s widower, Franklin Kwame Asante, also voiced deep anguish over the Attorney-General’s advice and questioned why key evidence — including a video confession from the prime suspect — was disregarded.
“The person confessed. He’s on video. Now you turn around and say there was no witness? When people commit murder, do they bring spectators?” he asked.
Despite his heartbreak, he vowed to fight on: “We’re down, but we’re not finished. We’ll take it up again and find out if there is truly justice in this country.”

The crowd responded enthusiastically to President Mahama’s message of gratitude and progress
Voices from across the Eastern Region rang with optimism and civic pride on Sunday July 20, 2025, as President John Dramani Mahama commenced a regional “Thank You Tour” following his 2024 landslide electoral victory.
“The word ‘thank you’ may sound simple, but in leadership, it’s powerful,” Ernestina Aboagyewaa, Deputy Women Organiser of the of the National Democratic Congress, Achiase Constituency told the Ghana News Agency. “It builds relationships and shows respect for citizens’ sacrifices.”
That sentiment echoed throughout Jackson Park in the Eastern Regional capital, Koforidua, where residents, traders, and party officials gathered in large numbers to welcome the President.
The ceremonial durbar included traditional rulers and local leaders, underscoring administration of President Mahama effort to bolster grassroots connection and regional dialogue.
Agness Bekoe, a vendor selling National Democratic Congress paraphernalia, described the atmosphere as “energised.”
Nearby, fellow trader Ekua Yeboah said business had surged: “Sales are picking up and I expect even more by day’s end.”
Francis Arthur, Secretary of the Asene Manso Akroso Constituency, lauded Mahama’s economic stewardship.
“The cedi has appreciated steadily, which reflects good governance,” Mr. Arthur said. “Now we look forward to development tailored to our local needs.”
The crowd responded enthusiastically to President Mahama’s message of gratitude and progress. “The people of Eastern Region placed their trust in me,” he said. “This tour is about saying thank you, not just with words, but with action and commitment to progress.”
The NDC, which won the 2024 presidential election under Mr. Mahama’s leadership, was prominently represented, with party colours and slogans on display throughout the park.
Beyond symbolism and celebration, residents were keen to hear specifics about regional priorities.
The President is expected to continue his tour in other regions in the weeks ahead, addressing national concerns while acknowledging local aspirations.
Ghanaian footballer Daniel Amartey has praised Hearts of Oak following his visit to the club’s Kpobiman facilities.
The former Leicester City defender, who is currently unattached, visited the club on Monday July 21, 2025.
Amartey was given a tour of the club’s ultra-modern facilities, which he compared to what he has seen in Europe.

Visitors to the United States will need to pay a “visa integrity fee,” according to a provision of the Trump administration’s recently enacted One Big Beautiful Bill Act.
The fee applies to all visitors who need nonimmigrant visas to enter, and cannot be waived.
However, travellers may also be able to get the fees reimbursed, according to the provision.
Details about the new requirement are scant, which has resulted in “significant challenges and unanswered questions regarding implementation,” a spokesperson from the U.S. Travel Association told CNBC Travel.
However, here is what is known thus far.
How much is the fee?
The fee will be at least $250 during the U.S. fiscal year 2025, which runs from Oct. 1, 2024, to Sept. 30, 2025. However, the secretary of Homeland Security is free to set the fee higher, according to the provision.
Thereafter, the visa integrity fee will be adjusted for inflation.
Who must pay the new fee?
The “visa integrity fee” applies to all visitors who need nonimmigrant visas, which includes tourists, business travellers and international students. Some visitors, including those from Australia, Japan and many nations in Europe, may not need visas to enter under the Visa Waiver Program.
When is the fee paid?
The fee is paid when the visa is issued, according to the provision. Thus, visitors whose visa requests are denied will not be charged.
Does the fee replace other visa fees?
No, the provision states that the new fee is “in addition to” other fees, including regular visa fees.
“For example, an H-1B worker already paying a $205 application fee may now expect to pay a total of $455 once this fee is in place,” Steven A. Brown, a partner at the Houston-based immigration law firm Reddy Neumann Brown PC, wrote in a post on his firm’s website.
Additionally, the fee must be paid on top of a “Form I-94 fee,” which the One Big Beautiful Bill Act increased from $6 to $24. That fee must be paid by anyone who is required to submit a Form I-94 arrival and departure record, which applies to most travelers.
How can travellers get reimbursed?
To get their money back, visa holders must comply with the conditions of the visa, which includes “not accept[ing] unauthorized employment,” and not overstay the visa validity date by more than five days, according to the provision.
Reimbursements will be made after the travel visa expires, it says.
What isn’t known
The fee has not yet been implemented, according to Brown.
It is not clear when it will begin.
“I believe it would need a regulation, or at least a notice in the Federal Register, regarding implementation on collection,” said Brown.
It is also unclear how travellers will pay the fee, the U.S. Travel Association told CNBC.
“The bill directs the DHS Secretary to charge the fee, but DHS does not own the visa application, issuance or renewal process — so where and when would DHS collect the fee?” the spokesperson said.
In response to CNBC’s enquires, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson said: “The visa integrity fee requires cross-agency coordination before implementation.”
More questions surround how and when the reimbursement process kicks in.
Since many visas are valid for several years, the U.S. Congressional Budget Office said it expects “a small number of people would seek reimbursement.”
Moreover, “CBO expects that the Department of State would need several years to implement a process for providing reimbursements. On that basis, CBO estimates that enacting the provision would increase revenues and decrease the deficit by $28.9 billion over the 2025?2034 period.”
Brown said he is advising clients to treat the fee as non-refundable.
“If you get it back, great. But it is usually difficult to get money back from the government,” he said. “I would rather them view it as a ‘bonus’ if they get the refund.”
The purpose of the fee
“President Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill provides the necessary policies and resources to restore integrity in our nation’s immigration system,” a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson told CNBC.
Data shows most visa holders comply with their visa terms. For the fiscal years between 2016 and 2022, between 1%-2% of nonimmigrant visitors overstayed their visas in the United States, according to the U.S. Congressional Research Service.
However, an estimated 42% of the approximately 11 million unauthorized population living in the United States entered the country legally, but overstayed their period of admission, the data shows.
Effect on incoming travellers
Brown said the visa integrity fee will likely impact B visa holders — or leisure and business travellers — and international students more than other types of travellers.
“For B visa holders, they may not want to add an additional $250 per person to their trip costs,” he said.
The new fee, plus the I-94 fee, come as the United States prepares to host several major events in 2026, including the “America 250” celebration, in honor of the country’s 250th anniversary, and parts of the FIFA World Cup.
These hurdles are compounded by problems at Brand USA, the destination marketing organization that promotes inbound travel into the United States, which saw the One Big Beautiful Bill Act slash its funding from $100 million to $20 million.
The cuts came after the U.S. Commerce Department fired nearly half of Brand USA’s board members in April.
In a statement, Fred Dixon, the organization’s president and CEO, said it is “disappointed” with the cuts yet hopeful that the funds will be restored for the fiscal year 2026.
“We remain focused on growing legitimate international inbound travel and the vital boost it provides to the U.S. economy,” he said.
Ahead of the passage of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, U.S. Travel Association President and CEO Geoff Freeman praised the bill’s contributions to U.S. infrastructure, air traffic control and border security.
But, he added: “The smart investments in the travel process make foolish new fees on foreign visitors and reductions to Brand USA, America’s promotion arm, that much harder to swallow.”
Hollywood is reeling from the unexpected loss of actor and musician Malcolm-Jamal Warner, and among the many who have paid tribute is singer and actor Tyrese Gibson, who poured his heart out in a touching Facebook post titled The Gentle Giant.

“He never chased noise. He stayed grounded,” Tyrese reflected. “He showed us that fame doesn’t have to strip away your soul.”
The tribute also acknowledged the personal pain the news of Warner’s passing has brought, not just to his family but to fans worldwide.
“This tragedy hit us hard. Not just because of who he was on screen, but because of who he remained when the cameras turned off.”
Tyrese’s closing words were a moving farewell, “We say goodbye to a man who gave us more than entertainment. He gave us hope. He gave us another way to exist. Rest well, Malcolm. You were everything we needed.”
