The vetting of the Minister-designate of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, was primarily conducted in English, the official language of the country.

However, during the proceedings, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader and Ranking Member of the Appointments Committee, decided to switch things up by testing Iddrisu’s proficiency in ‘Twi,’ one of the most widely spoken languages in Ghana.

Afenyo-Markin asked Iddrisu, “Haruna Iddrisu, how long have you served as a Member of Parliament?” in Twi, to which Iddrisu responded confidently, “Close to twenty years.”

This exchange drew applause from the Committee and other attendees.

In a light-hearted moment, Afenyo-Markin jokingly declared, “You’ve passed,” prompting more laughter and applause from those present.

The exchange brought to light Iddrisu’s linguistic capabilities, with his CV listing his proficiency in English, Dagbani, Hausa, and Twi.

Afenyo-Markin expressed his admiration for Iddrisu’s Twi proficiency, remarking, “I am impressed with your Twi. I sense there is a southern inspiration.”

Iddrisu, in turn, credited his wife for guiding him to improve his Twi, further lighting up the moment and showcasing the personal side of the minister-designate.

Fitch upgrades outlook for Ghanaian banks amid economic turnaround

Fitch Rating upgrades Ghana's outlook Fitch Rating upgrades Ghana’s outlook

Fitch Ratings has upgraded its outlook for the Ghanaian banking sector, citing improved solvency and a more stable operating environment.

In a report assessing the solvency of Ghanaian banks, the agency attributed the positive shift to the almost completion of the sovereign debt restructuring and the gradual stabilisation of the Ghanaian economy.

The agency observed that strong profits driven by high treasury bill yields were fuelling a capital recovery of Ghanaian banks for 2023 and 2024.

According to the rating agency, this trend is crucial as regulatory interventions from the Central Bank relating to the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP) are set to expire by the end of 2025.

The DDEP, implemented in late 2022, significantly impacted bank capital, but regulatory measures have helped mitigate these losses.

The report highlighted that the successful conclusion of the Eurobond exchange in October 2024 had improved Ghana’s access to international finance and eased local currency liquidity pressures.

This, coupled with the anticipated decline in macroeconomic volatility, including increased GDP growth and stabilised inflation, is expected to further reduce risks for the banking sector.

The report noted that while the sovereign default posed solvency challenges, the Ghanaian banking sector’s reliance on domestic deposits had largely insulated it from acute liquidity pressures.

Fitch expects the external debt restructuring to be completed soon, further enhancing the operating environment for Ghanaian banks.

The agency anticipates that the majority of banks will achieve capital compliance by year-end 2025 as capital levels continue to strengthen.

This positive outlook for the Ghanaian banking sector comes as a welcome development, signalling a gradual recovery from the economic challenges faced by the country in recent years.

What Mustapha Ussif asked Haruna Iddrisu during his appearance before the Appointments Committee

Former Minister of Sports, Mustapha Ussif, quizzed Karela United owner, Haruna Iddrisu, on his plans to address the high dropout rates during the latter’s vetting as the Minister of Education-designate.

Ussif began the session by praising Haruna on his appointment, expressing his delight at seeing someone from his ethnic background honoured with such a significant role.

“Let me congratulate my senior brother, and let me put it on record that I’m very proud of you,” Ussif remarked.

Following his warm words, he proceeded to question Haruna on his plans to address the high dropout rates at the basic education level in the Northern Region.

“According to African Education Watch, in the Northern Region, only 5 out of 19 students who enroll in kindergarten are able to complete primary school, and of those, only three go on to complete Junior High School (JHS).

“As the first Minister of Education from the northern sector of our country, what will you do to address this issue?” he asked.

In response, Haruna Iddrisu expressed gratitude to Mustapha for the warm compliments before assuring him that his ministry would work to bridge the educational gap between the northern and southern regions.

“It is important to recognise that, as a country, there is a north-south divide when it comes to access to education. Beginning in 1876, when the first school was established, the north only got its first schools around 1951. This highlights the gap and the existing deficit.

“We will work to close that gap. In fact, even with the implementation of the Free Senior High School policy, participation rates have been notably high in northern Ghana. This suggests that poverty was a key barrier to accessing quality education in the north,” he added.

The Minister of Education-designate, Haruna Iddrisu, appeared before the Appointments Committee of Parliament on Monday, January 20, 2025.

The session was marked by mutual respect between the two politicians, with Ussif playing a key role in scrutinising the minister-designate’s vision for Ghana’s education sector.

LGBTQ+ is repugnant to my values and ethics

0

Haruna Iddrisu, the Education Minister-Designate, has strongly opposed LGBTQ+ practices, stating that they are inconsistent with his personal values and ethics.

He emphasized the importance of safeguarding Ghana’s cultural and moral value system.

During a meeting with the Catholic Bishops’ Conference in Accra on Tuesday, January 14, 2025, President John Dramani Mahama proposed a new approach to the ongoing debate surrounding the Anti-LGBTQ+ bill.

He suggested that the bill be introduced as a government-sponsored initiative rather than a private member’s bill.

President Mahama argued that government sponsorship would grant the bill greater legitimacy and improve its chances of passing through Parliament.

Appearing before the Appointments Committee of Parliament on January 20, Haruna Iddrisu remarked, “It’s a cultural wrong, with my religion as a Muslim, you know where I stand on this matter. It is repugnant to my Muslim values and ethics.”

He continued, “I do not want to believe that many a Ghanaian parent would want their children trained in a way which is not consistent with the way I and you were brought up as Ghanaians. That a man can relate to a man and a woman can relate to a woman.

“We’re a country and we define our values both social and cultural, and we should expect all other persons to respect those values.”

Iddrisu added, “We’re a country, we have our own values, and we have a duty to preserve those values within the ambit of the constitution.”

BezoMoney: Empowering Ghana’s Savings Culture with Digital Solutions and Financial Innovation

0

Collaborating with prominent Ghanaian fintech company, Zeepay, BezoMoney is rolling out BezoSusu to users nationwide as part of the startup’s ambitious expansion strategy. Typically, the team of ten is focusing on digitizing an area that has been overlooked by some of the country’s leading fintech centers.

With backing fromMEST,Goodsoil VC , and various other partners, Mubarak Sumaila, CEO, and the BezoMoney team are replacing traditional “under-bed saving boxes” with modern, user-friendly digital saving wallets.

BezoMoney, which graduated from the MEST incubator in 2019, secured a $100,000 pre-seed investment to offer digital savings wallets to Ghanaians. In 2021, the startup raised $200,000 in seed funding, led by Goodsoil VC, to launch and expand products like BezoSeries, BezoCredit, and other inclusive financial solutions.

Founded in August 2019 by Mubarak Sumaila and Diana Osei, BezoMoney aims to help individuals and groups save money while building financial credit through their savings history. In a discussion with Adwoa Acheampomaa, BezoMoney’s Head of Marketing, she shared lesser-known insights into the financial habits of everyday Ghanaians.

Adwoa Acheampomaa revealed that a significant number of Ghanaians still rely on the tradition of saving in small boxes hidden under their beds, commonly referred to as “Susu.” This practice emerged as a response to the often unreliable financial institutions in the country. She further explained how various unions, including the Market Women Association, Taxi Drivers Association, and local church groups, adopt collective saving strategies designed to improve the quality of life for their members.

Over time, numerous citizens have raised concerns about difficulties in accessing their savings, a problem that extends to some financial institutions as well. In February 2020, the Ghanaian government had to reimburse customers who lost their savings and investments with collapsed savings and loans and microfinance companies. Additionally, the Bank of Ghana revoked the licenses of 347 microfinance companies in 2020 due to their failure to comply with regulatory requirements.

To address the distrust Ghanaians have towards savings and loans companies and microfinance institutions, BezoMoney introduced BezoSusu and BezoSmartSavings. These USSD-powered platforms enable users to transfer funds from their Mobile Money wallets to Bezo wallets and set savings goals based on predetermined commitments. By dialing *920*75#, any Ghanaian can easily join the startup’s saving plans. In its beta phase, BezoSmartSavings has already gained over 1,000 users, attracting participants from regions around Greater Accra to the digital platform.

S&P’s global financial literacy survey reveals that Africans have the lowest financial literacy scores worldwide. This lack of financial knowledge hinders the progress of fintech companies in the country striving to digitize the sector. In response, BezoMoney launched BezoSeries, a podcast aimed at providing valuable financial education to the public. The podcast’s goal is to raise awareness about the importance of saving and help BezoMoney customers cultivate healthy saving habits.

In the coming quarters, the funded startup plans to introduce additional innovative mobile-based products, including insurance support, credit-building opportunities, payment services, and other relevant fintech solutions tailored to the traditional Ghanaian market.

Scrapping road tolls was illegal; we’ll restore them – Agbodza

0

Kwame Governs Agbodza, the Minister-Designate for Roads and Highways, has criticised the previous government’s decision to abolish road tolls, describing the move as an “illegal act.”

Speaking during his vetting in Parliament on Monday, January 20, he detailed the events leading up to the controversial policy change and highlighted the financial implications of the decision.

Agbodza also hinted at the reintroduction of road tolls as a measure to enhance revenue generation for national development.

Agbodza disclosed that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) members on the Roads and Transport Committee of Parliament had cautioned against the policy before it was officially announced.

Despite their warnings, the then-Minister of Roads and Highways, Kwasi Amoako-Attah, proceeded with the decision, disregarding the concerns raised by stakeholders and experts.

Highlighting the financial repercussions of the decision, Agbodza pointed out that road tolls had been a significant source of revenue for the Road Fund, which is critical for maintaining and expanding the country’s road network.

“It is a matter that has attracted national attention. Accrual to the road fund was only GH¢250 million and we worked to increase it to gh¢1.5 billion, today, it is over GH¢2 billion, so we cautioned the government against cancelling the road tolls and we were surprised that they cancelled it. It was an act of illegality to cancel it.”

When questioned about the potential reintroduction of road tolls, the Minister-Designate also stated unequivocally that they would make a comeback under his leadership.

He explained that restoring tolls is necessary to enhance revenue collection and ensure the sustainability of road infrastructure development.

Trump promises ‘new golden age’ after swearing-in as 47th US President

0

Donald Trump has officially taken the oath of office as the 47th President of the United States, vowing to usher in a “new golden age” for the nation.

In a widely anticipated inaugural address delivered from the rotunda of the US Capitol, Trump outlined an ambitious vision aimed at restoring American greatness. He pledged bold policy changes, economic revitalization, and a renewed emphasis on national pride.

“The golden age of America begins right now,” Trump declared. He promised that under his leadership, the nation would “flourish and be respected” and positioned himself as both a “peacemaker and a unifier.”

During his speech, Trump criticized the previous administration’s handling of critical issues, particularly the migrant crisis, describing it as a symptom of a broader “crisis of trust” in government.

The ceremony was attended by a mix of tech billionaires, cabinet nominees, and former presidents, marking a significant moment in U.S. political history. Minutes before Trump took the oath, outgoing President Joe Biden issued last-minute pardons for members of his family.

As part of his immediate policy agenda, Trump is expected to sign a series of executive orders in the coming hours. These include declaring a “national emergency” at the US-Mexico border, designating drug cartels as terrorist organizations, and dismantling government diversity programs.

Amponsah explained that despite the financial setbacks, he views the investment in his craft as valuable.

“And that is what George Quaye said about investing in oneself, so all the money that I spend, even if it doesn’t come back as profit, it would come back into my craft,” he said.

Our salary is just GH¢15k as MPs, find a job before entering politics

0

Kwame Governs Agbodza is the Minority Chief Whip and Minister of Roads and Highways-designate Kwame Governs Agbodza is the Minority Chief Whip and Minister of Roads and Highways-designate

The Minister-designate of Roads and Highways, Kwame Governs Agbodza, has advised the youth to establish stable careers before pursuing a full-time career in politics.

This, he explained, would provide the financial stability necessary to navigate the high demands of political life.

Speaking during his vetting by Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Monday, January 20, 2023, Kwame Agbodza shared insights into the financial realities of being a politician.

He pointed out the significant expenses associated with constituency responsibilities, which often outweigh the incomes earned from public office.

“In my own life, the resources I spend in my constituency, the bulk of it does not come from my political salary. As you know, my salary is GHc15,000 cedis. By the time I finish my weekend funeral rounds, I must have spent all of that. The rest comes from my consultancy work and other small ventures,” he explained.

Agbodza emphasised that political office alone is insufficient to sustain the financial obligations expected of politicians, particularly in rural and underprivileged communities where many residents look to their representatives for support.

He noted that the ability to provide such assistance often depends on income streams outside of politics.

He further encouraged young people interested in public service to acquire practical experience and build sustainable livelihoods before entering the political arena.

“My advice to the young man who wants to enter politics is to get a day job that is sustainable first,” he stated.

The Member of Parliament of Adaklu, Kwame Agbodza, was the first ministerial nominee to be vetted as part of the ongoing approval process for President John Dramani Mahama’s latest ministerial appointments, although this is the second list of nominees being vetted.

Asante Kotoko new signing Daniel Adrian Adjetey Asante Kotoko new signing Daniel Adrian Adjetey

The new signing of Asante Kotoko, Daniel Adrian Adjetey has opened up on why he chose to join the club.

According to him, one of the main reasons is the exceptional project the club’s management presented to him.

“It’s an incredible feeling to join Kotoko. This is one of the biggest clubs in Africa, and I’m honoured to be part of it. I’ve had the privilege of playing abroad, but coming back to represent Kotoko feels special. One of the reasons I wanted to play in Ghana again is the exceptional project the club’s management put forward to me,” Daniel Adrian Adjetey said as quoted on the website of his new club.

The defender sealed his move to the Porcupine Warriors club on Monday, January 20, after a successful medical examination.

In his maiden interview, Daniel Adrian Adjetey shared his readiness to work hard for his new club to ensure the team succeeds.

Zulu king’s first wife fails to halt third marriage

0

Zulu monarch Misuzulu kaZwelithini has faced a stumbling block over his planned wedding Zulu monarch Misuzulu kaZwelithini has faced a stumbling block over his planned wedding

The first wife of South Africa’s Zulu King Misuzulu kaZwelithini has failed in her legal attempt to halt his plans to take a third wife.

Queen Ntokozo kaMayisela went to court ahead of what was expected to be the wedding later this week.

But despite the ruling, it is not clear whether the wedding will still go ahead as planned.

On Saturday, South African media quoted a letter reportedly from the king saying the ceremony had been called off “due to reasons beyond the control of the royal house”.

Polygamous marriages are recognised in South Africa but only if they are registered as customary weddings.

This latest row comes amid a series of scandals that has hit King Misuzulu since he came to power just over two years ago.

The Zulu king does not have formal political power and the monarch’s role within broader South African society is largely ceremonial, but he remains hugely influential with a yearly government-funded budget of several million dollars.

Before he was enthroned, the king married Mayisela in 2021 in a civil marriage.

In her legal argument heard in the high court on Monday, the queen, through her lawyer, said that the king could not marry anyone else as their marriage was still in force.

Under South African law, a civil marriage must either be dissolved or converted to a traditional union before a man can take any more wives.

In rejecting the application to halt the king’s marriage to Nomzamo Myeni, Judge Bongani Mngadi said that as the queen had already consented to the idea that her husband could marry other women, she could not prevent a ceremony from taking place.

Last year, according to what was said in court on Monday, the royal couple had agreed to convert their civil marriage to a traditional one. But since then the king has applied for a divorce, saying that their relationship had broken down.

Despite the reported letter, as well as the king’s lawyer in court, saying that the wedding would not take place, contradictory statements have also emerged.

South African news site TimesLIVE is reporting that the bride-to-be said she knew nothing about the letter and as far as she understood, her wedding would proceed as initially planned.

According to another news site, IOL, which reportedly spoke to the couple, the king insisted that he loved Myeni and would “marry her by force”.

Since his coronation in October 2022, there has been controversy around some of the decisions King Misuzulu has made.

In December, he unlawfully suspended the board of the Ingonyama Trust, which owns and controls vast tracts of communal land in KwaZulu-Natal, which is supposed to be for the benefit and welfare of communities under the king’s leadership in the region.

King Misuzulu is the sole trustee and chairperson of the trust but has no powers to hire or fire board members.

He has also recently summarily fired two close aides, including his traditional prime minister, in quick succession – moves which raised eyebrows among royal watchers.

Misuzulu’s position as king is also being questioned by some and a legal case is currently under way challenging his recognition as monarch by the state.

He ascended to the throne sooner than expected after his father, King Goodwill Zwelithini, died during the Covid pandemic in March 2021 of diabetes-related complications.

Zwelithini was the Zulu nation’s longest-reigning monarch, having served on the throne for almost 50 years.

Ghana Culture Forum Congratulates Dzifa Gomashie

0

The Ghana Culture Forum (GCF) has congratulated Abla Dzifa Gomashie (MP) on her nomination as the Minister-Designate for Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts.

In a statement issued, GCF urged the Appointment Committee to offer her favorable consideration, expressing confidence in her nomination.

It emphasized Dzifa Gomashie’s long-time dedication to Ghana’s artistic and cultural landscape, starting with her theater arts program, which has made her a vital member of the creative community.

“It is evident that Dzifa’s transition into the political arena was motivated by her genuine concern for the state of culture and the creative sector,” the statement said.

“As a passionate creative individual with a deep understanding of the sector, GCF believes she possesses significant insights that will aid in advancing our collective goals,” the statement read.

The statement expressed optimism that two key factors—the existing processes and the people in charge of them will have a significant impact on her success as Minister.

“The agenda for the cultural sector is forward-looking, and we trust that both the machinery and its operators will be well-equipped to meet the challenges ahead.”

As the government’s representative for the cultural sector, GCF encouraged her to consider taking the following steps to address key problems facing the creative industry.

GCF wants Dzifa Gomashie to establish a comprehensive framework for the culture and creative sector while empowering relevant state institutions for effective management.

GCF urged her to conduct a thorough audit of existing legislation and legal frameworks governing the culture and creative sector to ensure alignment and coherence with the established framework.

“We wish you great success in your upcoming vetting process and look forward to realizing our shared vision for the development of Ghana’s culture and creative sector,” the statement added.

This support was demonstrated through the opening of the Liberian General Consulate in Dakhla in 2020 and Liberia’s participation in the 2021 Ministerial Conference in Support of the Autonomy Initiative under Morocco’s Sovereignty.

E-Gate at KIA was to be done for free, but NPP govt paid $1.7m without a contract

The Minister-Designate for Roads and Highways, Governs Kwame Agbodza, has criticized the procurement and financial handling of the electronic gate (E-Gate) system at Kotoka International Airport (KIA). He revealed during his vetting before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Monday, January 20, that the project, which reportedly cost $1.7 million, was executed without a formal contract.Mr.

I’ll Still Advocate De-capping Of Road Fund – Agbodza

0

Kwame Governs Agbodza, the Minister-designate for Roads and Highways, has reiterated his commitment to advocating for the de-capping of the road fund, emphasizing that this would help resolve long-standing issues with contractor payments and ensure better infrastructure development.

Speaking during his vetting before the Appointments Committee, Mr. Agbodza outlined his concerns with the current management of the road fund.
He noted that while significant amounts are collected into the fund, only a portion is released for use by the Roads Ministry.
He explained that much of the fund is taken by the Finance Ministry and returned as a Government of Ghana (GOG) fund, rather than being used directly for road sector projects.

“When you see the amount of money collected into the road fund and the amount released to them, it turns out that the Finance Ministry just takes part of the road fund and gives it back as GoG funds. So, they don’t actually put in much money of themselves,” Mr. Agbodza remarked.

The Minister-designate stressed that releasing the full road fund directly to the sector would provide immediate relief for contractors who are owed significant sums, thus preventing the compounding interest that has added to the mounting debt.
“I would still continue to advocate for the road fund to be decapped,” he affirmed. “It is better for them to have that money and pay off contractors that they owe to stop the compounding interest than to keep on taking away more than 60% of their money,” he added.

Mr. Agbodza also pointed out that the current system has contributed to delays in crucial road projects, with many contractors unable to complete their work due to the backlog of unpaid debts.
“The problem stays with all of us, so I will continue to advocate for the decap of the road fund,” he intimated.

President John Dramani Mahama says he will call on the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, in his efforts to address Ghana’s prevailing economic challenges.

According to President Mahama, the Asantehene was helpful during his past administration in dealing with economic challenges. He disclosed this at the first Akwasidae celebration at the Manhyia Palace on January 19, 2025.

“Our nation, Ghana, is facing a dire economic crisis. While this is not the first time we have been in such a crisis, this particular one is characterised by a high rate of inflation, macroeconomic instability, a depreciating currency, and a debt default which has shut us out of the international credit market.

“It’s a more daunting challenge than we have ever experienced in our history. Your Royal Majesty, as a former president between 2013 and 2017, we faced macroeconomic instability, and I remember some of the obstacles we encountered in our efforts to bring stability to our economy and restore economic growth.

“I had the privilege of calling on you to use your influence and diplomacy to smooth the path towards prosperity and progress. Anytime I called on you, you didn’t hesitate. I would like to thank you for the cooperation I enjoyed with you at that time,” President Mahama stated.

He continued: “As we have inherited a difficult economic situation, I will be calling on you again from time to time. I know that anytime I call on you, you will not hesitate to work together to put our nation back on its feet.”

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, said he trusted President Mahama would not disappoint them.

“We would like you to please remember always the undertakings and promises you have made. I implore you to fulfil all your promises to us in the great Asante Kingdom.

“We have absolute trust in you that you shall not let us down. All ongoing developmental projects within the kingdom and across all kingdoms, you will fulfil them,” the Paramount Chief of the Mampong Traditional Area, Dasebre Osei Bonsu II, spoke on behalf of the Asantehene.

Trump to declare national emergency at border in flurry of day one orders

0

Incoming President Donald Trump plans to declare a “national emergency” at the US-Mexico border as part of a broader first-day flurry of executive orders aimed at quickly reversing the Biden administration’s policies.

Trump, who will be sworn-in as president on Monday, is expected to sign as many as 100 executive orders by the end of the day, touching on issues ranging from immigration and energy to the economy and gender issues.

As part of his plans, Trump will also order construction on the border wall to be resumed and that some criminal organisations be officially designated as foreign terrorists.

While campaigning, Trump vowed to shut down what he termed the “open-border” policies of Joe Biden.

In a series of calls with reporters on Monday morning, incoming Trump administration officials outlined dozens of executive orders the president-elect planned to take when he officially takes office, including 10 focused on what one official described as “common sense immigration policy”.

Officials said that Trump plans to end birthright citizenship, meaning that the children of undocumented migrants living in the US will no longer automatically be considered US citizens.

Birthright citizenship, however, is enshrined in the US Constitution and would require a two-thirds vote in both chambers of Congress to change. The official provided no further detail on how Trump plans to accomplish this.

As part of the national emergency designation at the border, Trump will also direct the Department of Defense to “seal the border” and surge additional resources and personnel, including counter-drone capabilities.

Additionally, the Trump administration plans to reinstate the controversial “Remain in Mexico” policy that requires that migrants wait for their asylum proceedings on the Mexican side of the border.

Incoming Trump officials also promised the beginning of what they described as an “all-of-government approach” to tackle inflation, as well as executive orders to boost US energy production and address the high costs of energy for consumers.

Officials confirmed, however, that no new tariffs would be announced on Inauguration Day, despite being a central part of the incoming president’s economic vision.

Trump had previously said he would impose new tariffs on goods entering the US from Canada, Mexico and China on his first day in office.

Incoming officials also said that Trump plans to “end DEI [diversity, equity and inclusion” inside the government, and make it official policy that the US recognises two sexes – male and female.

The incoming White House Press Secretary, Karoline Leavitt, tweeted that Trump would also move to rename the Gulf of Mexico the “Gulf of America”.

The tallest mountain in North America, Denali, will also again be called Mount McKinley – its name until it was changed by President Barack Obama in 2015.

Trump officially became president at noon local time (1700 GMT) at the US Capitol. He was expected to begin signing orders shortly thereafter.

Following his swearing-in, Trump will deliver an inaugural address, followed by a luncheon, parade and a series of inaugural balls in the evening.

About 20,000 people are expected at the parade, which was moved inside to the Capital One Arena over the weekend due to concerns over frigid temperatures that swept across Washington DC.

The crowd is just a small fraction of the approximately 220,000 tickets guests were expected to watch the event from the grounds of the US Capitol.

On Monday morning, a desk had been set up in the centre of the arena – which some have speculated could be used to sign executive orders in front of his supporters.

Mahama’s commitment to 60 ministers shows he’s a promise keeper

Roads and highways minister-designate, Kwame Agbodza Roads and highways minister-designate, Kwame Agbodza

The Minister of Roads and Highways-designate, Kwame Governs Agbodza, has praised President John Dramani Mahama for his commitment to limiting the number of ministers in his administration to 60, highlighting the move as a means to reduce wasteful public expenditure.

During his vetting by the Appointments Committee on Monday, January 20, Agbodza emphasised that Mahama’s decision to stick to this pledge, including Deputy Ministers and Regional Ministers, demonstrates his dedication to keeping his promises.

Mr Agbodza described Mahama as a “man of his word,” noting that many doubted a president would maintain such a limit on the number of ministers.

The Adaklu lawmaker also pointed out that this step was a positive example of fiscal responsibility, reinforcing the President’s focus on ensuring a leaner and more efficient government.

This approach, according to the nominee aligns with Mahama’s broader agenda of cutting waste and prioritising effective governance.

“The fact that President Mahama is insisting on having only 60 ministers, is one of the ways to cut waste in public expenditure. Nobody thought that a president would insist on having 60 ministers including Deputy Ministers and Regional Ministers and he is doing. He’s a man of his word.

No Contract For E-gate – Agbodza

0

Minister-designate for Roads and Highways, Governs Kwame Agbodza, has revealed that there is no formal contract for the e-gate project at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA), despite previous claims of substantial financial investments.

Speaking before the Appointments Committee of Parliament on Monday, January 20, 2025, Mr. Agbodza expressed frustration at the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS), which has been central to the implementation of the e-gate system.
He pointed out that GIS had previously stated the total cost of the project at GHc297 million, contradicting earlier reports that had indicated a GHc240 million estimate.

“I don’t see how that is a rebuttal. In fact, you’ve just confirmed what I said,” Hon. Amoako-Attah told the committee. “You’re talking about a lifecycle cost of GHc297 million, while I had originally pointed out the GHc240 million. So what’s the point of this rebuttal?”

He questioned the legitimacy of the project, noting that only a few e-gates have been physically installed, and their cost appears to be far less than what is being quoted for the overall project. “These few e-gates could cost up to GHc1.7 million, but somehow, the figures being thrown around for the full implementation don’t add up,” he said.

“If I were to tell you today that there is not even a contract for the e-gate, there is no contract,” he emphasized.
“So what’s the GHc1.7 million you were talking about?”

The Minister-designate indicated that the project was initially supposed to be carried out by the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) at no cost to the government.
“The e-gate was supposed to be done for free,” he said.
“Why are we even paying for something that should be free?” he quizzed.

Mr. Agbodza further disclosed that the former government backtracked on the project’s financials.
He cited a memo suggesting the project cost had now ballooned to GHc147 million, with a 10-year contract duration, raising questions about the viability and oversight of the initiative.
“Why are we paying for a project that has already been implemented by other agencies like GCAA?” he asked.

The Minister-designate expressed deep concern that the Ghana Immigration Service had overstepped its mandate by leading the project, which, according to international resolutions, should be managed by the Ghana Airport Company Limited.

“Immigration Service, you have confirmed my allegation that you’ve forgotten this project lies with the GCAA,” Mr. Agbodza stated.

“You have no business carrying this out,” he said.

Mankessim Ex-Queenmother, 4 Others Face Murder Trial

0

An ex-Queenmother of Mankessim in the Central Region, Nana Ama Amissah III, and four persons are set to face committal proceedings over the alleged murder of Samuel Ampofo, the Mankessim Municipal Director of the National Investigations Bureau, and Kofi Yamoah over the installation of a new Queenmother, reports say.

She is alleged to have masterminded the shooting incident after chairing a meeting where the accused allegedly planned the disturbance which led to the murder of the two.

The accused, including an officer of the Ghana Fire Service are being held over the murders which occurred in 2019 during a series of disturbances that left the two dead and several others, including a Police Chief Inspector sustaining gunshot injuries.

The six who have provisionally been charged with murder are expected to appear before the Weija-Gbawe Magistrate Court.

Their arraignment followed the conclusion of investigations by the Cold Case Unit of the Ghana Police Service, six years after the incident.

13 suspects were initially arrested for their alleged involvement in the disturbances and the murder but the Office of the Attorney General has charged and advised the prosecution of six people.

They are James Kofi Obosu, also known as Nana Obosu Amissah, a farmer; Nana Ama Amissah III, ex-queen mother of Mankessim; Joseph Kobina Ansah, also known as Nana Okutseku, a Fire Service officer; and Robert Gardiner, a driver.

The rest are John Eric Kofi Turkson, also known as Nana Edu, and Clement Kwesi Owusu, an electrical contractor and teacher, respectively.

Background

On December 7, 2019, at about 1:30 p.m., a procession on the principal streets of Mankessim following the installation of the new Queenmother, Nana Araba Otua I, turned bloody when a gunman opened fire into the crowd, killing two persons.

The installation followed a Cape Coast High Court ruling that quashed the gazetting of Nana Osagyefo Amanfo Edu VI and Nana Ama Amissah III following a suit filed by the Paakesedo Nsona Family challenging the legitimacy of the duo.

The deceased, who were pronounced dead at the Mankessim Roman Hospital, were identified as Samuel Ampofo, the Mfanseman Municipal Director of the National Investigations Bureau, and Kofi Yamoah.

Police investigations revealed that when the procession got close to the family house of the Edu Nsona Royal family, one of the two gates laying claim to the Mankessim paramountcy, members of the Aduko Paakesedo Nsona Family had a tip-off that some people were planning to disrupt the installation of the new queenmother.

A witness in the case who went in to verify the information met Nana Obosu Amissah in possession of a pump-action gun in the company of Clement Owusu and Nana Edu.

Nana Amissah fired at the witness but missed.
It was at this point that the deceased NIB Director, Samuel Ampofo, saw Nana Obosu and asked him to put the gun down. The plea fell on deaf ears as Obosu allegedly shot him at close range.

The action of the accused angered a section of the mob, who chased, overpowered, and attempted to lynch him but for the swift intervention of the police.

While a postmortem examination revealed the deceased died of gunshot wounds, a ballistic examination on pellets retrieved from the bodies of the deceased indicated they were capable of being fired from a pump action or a single-barrelled gun.

A witness in the case at an identification parade conducted in May 2022 identified the accused James Kofi Obosu as the one who shot and killed Samuel Ampofo and Kofi Yamoah.

Police Investigations

A 7-member police team from the Cold Case Unit at the headquarters of the Criminal Investigations Department of the Ghana Police Service spent months investigating the case.

During a case docket review between 2021 and 2022, the unit picked up fresh intelligence leading to the arrest of the other accused persons in 2023.

These included WhatsApp chats, audio recordings, and face-to-face interviews with witnesses.

While the first accused, James Kofi Obosu, was the first to be arrested in Mankessim, followed by four others, Nana Ama Amissah was later arrested at the CID Headquarters in Accra when she honoured a police invitation to assist investigations.

Police investigations revealed a longstanding chieftaincy feud between the Paakesedo Nsona and Edu Nsona royal families that instigated the shooting incident.

On November 29, 2019, the Cape Coast High Court quashed the gazette of Nana Osagyefo Amanfo Edu V1 and Nana Ama Amissah III, respectively following a writ filed by the Aduko Paakesedo Royal family.

The court argued that the Chieftaincy Declaration Forms B of the two traditional leaders were forged and therefore defective.

Following this ruling, the Aduko Paakesedo Family decided to install a new queenmother on December 7, 2019.

The dissatisfied accused persons tried to use the police to thwart attempts of their opponents to install new chiefs.

Sources at the Attorney-General’s office say when all efforts of the Edu Nsona Royal family to use police and the Municipal Security Council to stop the installation failed, they hatched a plan to ‘import’ and arm some Zongo Boys from Kumasi to disrupt the installation.

This plan was allegedly hatched during a series of meetings organised at the behest of the embattled ex-queenmother.

The first accused, James Kofi Obosu, allegedly negotiated with a Zongo chief to bring the “Boys” at a cost of GHȼ10,000.00.

On December 7, 2019, Nana Obosu is alleged to have met Yahaya and his thugs at the Mankessim Roundabout at about 4 a.m. and allegedly took them to Okutseku’s house, where they were briefed and guns and machetes were handed over to them to cause mayhem.

The thugs were alleged to later been sent to the Edu Nsona Royal family house at Anaafo Junction, where they allegedly shot the Mankessim Municipal Director of NIB, Samuel Ampofo, and Kofi Yamoah.
Three persons, Frederick Amonoo, Kwasi Owusu, and Detective Chief Inspector William Nyarko, were also injured.

Football coaches call for support to address sports challenges

0

By Francis Blankson

Ashaiman, Jan. 20, GNA - Some football coaches and players in Ashaiman have called on the Ministry of Sports and Recreation to prioritise addressing the infrastructure deficit for sports activities and improve on the welfare of players and athletes nationwide.

They said in addition to infrastructure, there was a need for the ministry to tackle funding challenges, provide coaching clinics, and enhance youth tournaments and intensify scouting programme.

According to them, these measures would boost local and international sports activities and contribute to the country’s socio-economic development.

Speaking an interview, Mr. Joseph Mawunor, coach of Regent Football Club, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that the ministry needed to adopt a proactive approach to resolving the numerous challenges facing sports in Ghana.

Mr. Mawunor said inadequate funding had hindered the growth of talent and skills while depriving the country of the economic and social benefits associated with sports.

“There is a critical need to focus on grassroots development, particularly through coaching clinics, youth tournaments, and scouting programme. Efforts must be enhanced to sustain the interest of young people in sports,” Mr. Mawunor said.

Mr. Kwesi Amawu, a professional footballer, said mismanagement, delayed funding, and poor infrastructure in almost all regions of the country.

“We have been struggling with poor infrastructure, delayed funding, and mismanagement for years. If these issues are fixed, it will enhance our competitiveness on the global stage,” he said.

Similarly, Mr. Abdul Majid Adamah, another footballer, emphasised the importance of sustainable initiatives over temporary financial aid.

He expressed disappointment in Ghana’s inability to qualify for the African Cup of Nations and urged the government to focus on long-term solutions for youth and sports development.

“A one-time handout won’t solve our problems; what we need is a structure that will benefit both the current and next generations. The government should prioritise sustainable youth and sports development programmes,” he added.

Mr. Tijani Mohamed, a footballer, said the lack of funding for local players had left many struggling to make ends meet, forcing some to abandon sports to seek alternative livelihoods.

He appealed to the government to support talent development by providing resources for local teams to ease the burden on players.

”The ministry should put measures in place to nurture talents and equip local teams with the tools they need to thrive,” he said.

The Member of Parliament of Asokwa and Deputy Majority Leader, Patricia Appiagyei, affectionately referred to Haruna Iddrisu as her “beloved son” during his vetting on Monday, January 20, 2025.

Expressing her support for Iddrisu’s nomination as Minister-designate of Education, she emphasised her belief in his abilities.

“It will be most unfortunate if I don’t add my voice, my beloved son, in whom I am well pleased. So, I just didn’t want to keep quiet but to bless him. I know your competencies and I know when people were questioning why education, I knew what you could do. So, I bless you,” she said.

Haruna Iddrisu’s career began in 2004 when he contested the newly-formed Tamale South Constituency at the time and won.

Throughout his career, he served as the Ranking Member of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Communications and was the Minority Spokesman on Communications in the 4th Parliament, when his party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), was in opposition.

Despite his party’s defeat in the 2016 presidential elections, Iddrisu was re-elected and assumed leadership as Minority Leader in the 7th Parliament.

Iddrisu continued his political success, winning his Tamale South seat again in the 2020 parliamentary election with a landslide victory, despite the NDC’s loss in the presidential race.

His political influence further solidified in May 2023 when he became the first incumbent MP in Ghana’s history to run unopposed for four consecutive terms.

Rex Omar and Dzifa Gomashie Rex Omar and Dzifa Gomashie

Ghanaian highlife artist, Rex Omar, has expressed his support for the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts-designate, Abla Dzifa Gomashie.

Rex Omar, according to some people, was touted as a strong contender for the position due to his significant contributions to President John Dramani Mahama’s manifesto on creative arts.

However, the appointment was given to Dzifa Gomashie in a communiqué released by the president on January 17, 2024.

In an interview with Tony Best on Akoma FM’s Entertainment 360, the “Wo dofo ne hwan” hitmaker praised the decision, stating that Dzifa’s appointment is a step in the right direction.

He expressed confidence in her ability to excel in the role and clarified that he is not disappointed about not being selected for the role.

“If you analyse President Mahama’s appointments, you’ll notice that almost all the appointees served as deputy ministers in the previous administration. This puts them, including Dzifa, in a prime position to make an impact.

“I was given a task during the campaign, and it has ended. I have not asked anyone for a reward. With Dzifa’s wealth of experience, she has my full support to succeed,” Rex Omar explained.

With Dzifa Gomashie’s appointment, many industry pundits speculate that Rex Omar might be considered for the position of deputy minister, given his extensive experience and contributions to the creative arts sector.

GH₵345m needed to implement free tuition policy for first year university students -Haruna Iddrisu

The Minister-designate of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has announced that approximately GH₵345 million will be required to fully implement the government’s proposed free tuition policy for first year university students in the country.

Appearing before the Appointments Committee of Parliament on January 20, 2025, he stated that the policy is intended to make tertiary education more accessible to students across the country.

The Member of Parliament of Tamale South stated that the allocated funds would include tuition fees for freshers.

Haruna Iddrisu further explained that the government plans to channel the required funds directly to the affected universities and it would also include

reimbursing students who have already paid their tuition fees.

“The country will require about GH₵₵345 million of the population of students who enter tertiary institutions, that is what the state will be required to do. We intend to provide that money to the affected universities, at least, to make refunds to those who have already paid fees,” he stated.

Haruna Iddrisu also pointed out that the new policy will give some flexibility to parents and guardians.

“The beauty of this is that parents who are willing to pay can do so under this policy that has been introduced by the NDC,” he stated.

During the 2024 Election, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) promised to implement the free tertiary tuition policy as part of efforts to reduce the financial burden on students and their families.

There was no contract, no need to pay even $1 – Agbodza

Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia at the commissioning of the KIA E-Gates play videoVice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia at the commissioning of the KIA E-Gates

The Minister of Roads and Highways-designate, Kwame Governs Agbodza, has noted that the electronic gates launched by the former Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, at the Kotoka International Airport should not have come at an extra cost to the government.

He explained that the total cost of the gates could have been $1.7 million instead of the $240 million quoted by the former government.

“Indeed, the few physical E-Gates that were planted could cost GH¢1.7 million but if Ghana had listened to what I was saying, it wouldn’t have resulted in some of the embarrassment we saw at the airport when the former vice president was trying to commission it. If I were to tell you that there was even no contract for the E-Gates, there is no contract. And they didn’t know,” he said during his vetting on January 20, 2025 at Parliament.

Agbodza reiterated that the government should not have paid a dime for its construction since this fell under the jurisdiction of the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority.

“The E-Gate was supposed to be done for free. Why are we even supposed to pay even $1 for something that we were supposed to get for free? So, when they started backtracking, they did this memo: Contract value: $147, $765, $627 million. Contract duration: 10 years, support and management fee; 10% support and maintenance fee; 18%. I repeat, Ghana not ought not to pay even $1 for the so-called E-Gate project.

“Immigration, you have confirmed my allegation that you have forgotten that the implementation of this lies in the domain of the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority, you have no business carrying this and this is a UN Security Council resolution. it lies with Ghana Airports Company Limited,” he concluded.

The former Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, commissioned the E-Gates at the Kotoka International Airport a few days to the 2024 general elections.

Controversies surrounding the project highlighted the cost of the gates as a rip-off to the taxpayer.

Arsenal legend Ian Wright has criticized Thomas Partey’s costly mistake in the Gunners’ 2-2 draw against Aston Villa, labelling it as “unforgivable.”

Arsenal blew a two-goal lead on Saturday, January 18, 2025, with Partey’s defensive lapse allowing Ollie Watkins to grab a late equaliser.

While acknowledging that the Ghanaian midfielder was played out of position at right-back, Wright insisted that Partey’s lack of awareness in the moment was inexcusable.

“He [Thomas Partey] is not a right-back, and that is understandable, but as a professional player, he should have sensed the danger and not moved away,” Wright said on Premier League Productions.

“He should have stuck with him and closed Watkins down, but he failed. At that level, making such mistakes is unforgivable, and he cost Arsenal a win,” he added.

The draw dealt a blow to Arsenal’s title hopes, as they now sit six points behind league leaders Liverpool, having played one game more.

On what grounds are you ordering AngloGold Ashanti to bear costs of injured persons? – Assafuah to Mahama

0

Vincent Ekow Assafuah is the Old Tafo MP Vincent Ekow Assafuah is the Old Tafo MP

The Member of Parliament of Old Tafo, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, has questioned President John Dramani Mahama regarding his directive for the management of AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) to fully cover the medical expenses of the injured individuals.

Appearing as a guest panelist on UTV on Monday, January 20, 2025, Assafuah questioned the basis on which the president is issuing such a directive to the mining company, considering that investigations have yet to begin and no findings have been established.

The New Patriotic Party lawmaker suggested that the content of the statement released by the presidency implies that President Mahama has already taken sides with the deceased illegal miners, branding the mining company as the guilty party.

“Armed Forces have stationed men at the AngloGold Ashanti and they witnessed people besieging the premises. The report provided by them which we, as lawyers call prima facie evidence or case, has given you an outline of what happened, adding that they were attacked unprovoked,” he said.

Assafuah argued that the president should have waited for the findings from the investigations before directing the company to cover the expenses.

“How do you include in your statement that AGA should bear the expenses of the medical expenses of the deceased and facilitate the burial arrangements for those who lost their lives? These people were there unprovoked and so, one way or the other, it is like you have already taken a stance.

“You have already taken sides asking people to compensate the deceased while asking for an investigation. On what basis are you telling the company to bear the cost? If you read the entirety of the statement, you can clearly see he has already concluded that the company is guilty,” he added.

His statement follows the violent clash between illegal miners and military personnel, which resulted in the loss of seven lives and left many others injured.

Meanwhile, President John Dramani Mahama, in a statement issued by his spokesperson, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has directed an investigation into the incident so that the persons found culpable for the incident would be held accountable.

“The government wishes to express deep regret over the tragic loss of up to eight (8) lives, said to be illegal miners, following a violent clash at a mining site at Obuasi.

“In response to the unfortunate incident, President John Dramani Mahama has ordered an immediate investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the clashes and ensure that any individuals found to have acted unlawfully are brought to justice,” part of the statement read.

The government also asked the management of AngloGold Ashanti to bear the medical expenses of the injured individuals fully and facilitate the burial arrangements of those who have lost their lives.

GH₵345m needed for free tertiary admission policy – Haruna Iddrisu

0

The Minister-Designate for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has revealed that approximately GH₵345 million will be needed to fully implement the government’s proposed free tuition policy for first-year tertiary students.

Speaking during his vetting by the Appointments Committee in Parliament on January 20, 2025, the Tamale South MP emphasized the policy’s potential to make tertiary education more accessible to a large number of students nationwide.

He noted that the allocated funds would cover tuition fees for students entering tertiary institutions, ensuring equitable access to higher education.

Haruna Iddrisu further explained that the government plans to channel the required funds directly to the affected universities.

He added that the initiative would include provisions for reimbursing students who have already paid their tuition fees, safeguarding fairness in the policy’s implementation.

“The country will require about ₵345 million for the population of students who enter tertiary institutions, that is what the state will be required to do. We intend to provide that money to the affected universities, at least, to make refunds to those who have already paid fees,” he stated.

He further emphasised that the new policy will offer flexibility to parents, allowing those who are willing to pay fees to do so under the framework introduced by the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

“The beauty of this is that parents who are willing to pay can do so under this policy that has been introduced by the NDC,” he stated.

The announcement comes after the NDC pledged to implement the free tertiary tuition policy during their 2024 campaign, aiming to ease the financial burden on students and their families while promoting greater access to higher education.

The minister-designate in his submission pledged to follow the policy through and ensure its effective implementation.

W’ell uncap GETFund to boost education infrastructure – Haruna Iddrisu

0

Education Minister nominee, Haruna Iddrisu, has pledged that a future administration under President John Dramani Mahama will uncap the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) to free up additional resources for robust infrastructure development in the education sector.

According to him, he will “engage the Minister for Finance to do this as a matter of expediency and for the President to engage with the IMF to review the memorandum, which included the GETFund in the negotiations.”

Appearing before Parliament’s Appointment Committee on Monday, January 20, Mr. Iddrisu noted that President Mahama has committed to reviewing the International Monetary Fund agreement, and part of that review will focus on uncapping GETFund to free up resources for education financing, particularly higher education.

“President Mahama and the Minister of Finance have gone public, and I joined them in saying that we will uncap the GETFund to free additional resources to support robust infrastructure development.”

He criticised the decision by a former Minister of Finance to cap GETFund, which he said has significantly limited the fund’s capacity to address critical infrastructure needs in the education sector.

“Capped, GETFund currently generates about GHS 3.2 billion. Uncapping it will make available GHS 7.9 billion to the Ministry of Education, which will accelerate expanded infrastructure development,” he stated.

He highlighted the pressing needs within the sector, including overcrowded classrooms, lack of sanitation facilities for young girls, and inadequate junior high schools, adding that “uncapping GETFund will provide the resources to tackle these challenges head-on.”

Mr. Iddrisu concluded by reaffirming the party’s commitment to using GETFund as a strategic tool to enhance access to quality education and improve infrastructure for the benefit of all Ghanaians.

Get a day job before venturing into politics – Kwame Agbodza to the youth

Minister-designate of Roads and Highways, Kwame Governs Agbodza Minister-designate of Roads and Highways, Kwame Governs Agbodza

Secular shows are the places I’m supposed to perform, not in church – Brother Sammy

Gospel musician, Broda Sammy Gospel musician, Broda Sammy

Ghanaian gospel musician, Broda Sammy, has explained his reason for performing at a secular concert after severe criticisms by some netizens.

In an interview with JoyNews, Broda Sammy noted that he performed at the event hosted by Mimlife Records at Tema as a way of winning souls for Christ.

He explained that Christians already know the gospel, hence, his mission is to bring the gospel to those who may not be familiar with it.

“This is the place I am supposed to be because my God told me he came because of sinners. I haven’t said everybody is a sinner. We are all sinners. But here is the place I am supposed to bring the gospel. Not in the church.

“The church people know God already. So, I have to introduce my God to those who don’t. That’s why I normally come here,” he said.

In an earlier interview in 2024, Broda Sammy expressed his willingness to perform in drinking spots and nightclubs if invited.

He stated that he does not discriminate against non-believers and sees everyone as people deserving of the gospel.

He said he believes that nightclubs and drinking spots are prime locations for evangelism, as they attract individuals who may not typically attend church.

Road Toll Re-introduction: There will be no toll booths

0

File photo of toll booths File photo of toll booths

The Minister of Roads and Highways-designate, Kwame Governs Agbodza, has announced that the John Dramani Mahama government will not be putting up toll booths for the re-introduction of road tolls.

Speaking at his vetting in Parliament on Monday, January 20, 2025, Kwame Agbodza said that the government would be rely on technology for the collection of the tolls when they are re-introduced.

He said that there would be no physical structures on the roads for the collection of the tolls; adding that the use of technology would not only ensure efficiency in the collection of the tolls, but would also ensure accountability.

“Yes, the road toll is coming back, but not in the form of building obstructions on the road for drivers to stop and somebody taking money from them. It will be coming back based on a technological platform that makes it fair and that makes it easy to collect, easy to account for and for the public to know what the money is actually being used for.

“Together with the (sic) minister, we shall come out with a policy as to how that will be done,” he said while answering a question on the tolls being reintroduced.

The minister-designate also criticised the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo government over the cancellation of the road tolls in 2021.

He said that the cancellation of the tolls by the government was illegal because only Parliament had the power to stop its collection.

“When the issue of the road toll started, our side, the former Minority Leader, together with me, decided to caution the government not to cancel or suspend road tolls, (but) let’s rather find ways of plugging the leakages in terms of the collection and enhance it. Hon. Haruna and I met Hon. Amoako Attah and gave our commitment that don’t cancel it. Indeed, we were surprised on the day they claimed they zeroed it.

“For me, it was an act of illegality. Yes, they said they just zeroed it, but it was a road fund and it had an Act, it was a law. So, you couldn’t unilaterally do that. As a result, I believe there was some level of negligence in the way it was done. They claimed the road toll was accruing only about 80 million. But today, there are contractors working for government of Ghana who are owed GH¢5,000 for weeding the roadside. Can you imagine how many roadside weed cleaners will be paid with 80 million? So, they cancelled it and our side consistently stood on principle and said bring the road toll back,” he reiterated.

In November 2021, the then Minister of Roads and Highways, Kwasi Amoako-Attah, unilaterally abolished the collection of road tolls despite opposition from the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, who stated that the action of Amoako-Attah was illegal and must be reversed.
