‘I angrily reacted to my girlfriend, and it landed me in big trouble’

Dear GhanaWeb,

I’m a 27-year-old man who graduated from university two years ago. I have a girlfriend who has been incredibly supportive and loving. When I earned my degree, I shared with her my desire to pursue a career in my field of study and explained that I couldn’t work in any unrelated industry.

My girlfriend lives independently and is very hardworking. Finding a job in this country is challenging, so I am currently unemployed and still job hunting.

Things got so bad that I couldn’t afford my rent, and my landlord evicted me. I called my girlfriend, and she suggested I move in with her. I was both happy and emotional; I couldn’t believe how blessed I was to have such a loving and understanding partner.

She works every day except Sundays, leaving me home alone most of the time.

She has done everything a girlfriend could do to make her man happy. She buys me clothes, feeds me well, and pays all the bills in the house. I have assured her multiple times that I’ll take care of her as soon as I secure a good job.

Two months ago, I ran into an old friend, and we exchanged contacts. It had been years since we last saw each other, so we decided to catch up. Unfortunately, I didn’t have any money to plan the meet-up.

My girlfriend is naturally jealous, so I didn’t know how to tell her I needed money to see another woman. I lied to her, saying I needed money for transport and food to go job hunting. She sent me the money, and I met my friend.

Honestly, I didn’t plan to cheat on my girlfriend, but it just happened. During our meeting, my friend confessed that she had a long-time crush on me and had always wanted to be intimate with me. We were close back in the day, and she knew how to arouse me. She started seducing me, and I gave in.

We ended up having sex. Afterward, we continued talking, and I felt happy at the time.

Three days ago, she sent me a suggestive message, and my girlfriend saw our chats. The messages clearly showed I had been cheating. I tried to explain myself, but she wouldn’t listen.

She started shouting, accusing me of being a lazy cheat, and demanded that I pack my things and leave. She even went as far as shouting in front of our neighbors, telling them she fed and clothed me.

Her words humiliated me. I tried to calm her down and reason with her, but she kept yelling and calling me names. I couldn’t take it anymore. In a moment of anger, I punched her hard under her chin and neck, and she fell. I had never hit her before, but I lost control.

I immediately rushed her to the hospital. She has been unconscious for three days, and the doctors haven’t said much about her condition. They keep asking me what happened, but I don’t know what to say.

I’m terrified of what will happen if she wakes up and tells them I hit her. What if I get arrested? I didn’t mean to hurt her, but I don’t know if she’ll forgive me or protect me this time.

I don’t know what to do. Should I stay and face the consequences, or should I leave and let her family handle the situation? The problem is, I have nowhere to go if I leave. I feel so lost and disturbed.

What should I do?

How an NPP MP acquired prime Cantonments land valued at $700k for GH¢42,000 – Ablakwa details

0

MP for Akim Swedru, Kennedy Osei Nyarko MP for Akim Swedru, Kennedy Osei Nyarko

In a recent exposé, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Member of Parliament for North Tongu and Chairman of the Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) committee, revealed that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP for Akim Swedru, Kennedy Osei Nyarko, acquired prime public land in Cantonments, Accra, under highly controversial terms.

According to Ablakwa’s report, Kennedy Osei Nyarko purchased the land in question for a mere GH¢42,000 (approximately US$2,800) in 2021, with authorization from then-President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

This transaction granted the MP a 99-year lease on the property, from January 1, 2021, to December 31, 2120, with an annual ground rent of GH¢10,500 for the first four years.

“Unimpeachable and irrefutable Lands Commission documents reveal that President Akufo-Addo authorized this outrageously unconscionable transaction in 2021. The NPP MP who benefited from this condemnable rip-off is Hon. Kennedy Osei Nyarko, MP for Akim Swedru. From the Lands Commission’s records, Hon. Kennedy Osei Nyarko now owns the prestigious land in question for 99 years (from January 1, 2021, to December 31, 2120),” he wrote.

According to Mr. Ablakwa, this deal is unconscionable due to the significant discrepancy between the price paid by the MP and the prevailing market rates at the time, which would have valued the land at between US$700,000 and US$800,000.

This raises questions about the fairness and transparency of the allocation of public assets, especially when compared to the conditions under which other Ghanaians might secure similar property.

The land in question, according to the North Tongu MP, was originally designated for agricultural mechanization, a sector in which Mr. Osei Nyarko himself had served as Deputy Minister.

Ablakwa argues that, instead of safeguarding this land for its intended public use, Nyarko allegedly colluded to repurpose it for private gain, an action that did not receive parliamentary approval as required by law.

“The irony is that this is the Cantonments Agricultural Mechanization land that Hon. Kennedy Osei Nyarko should have been keen on protecting as a former Deputy Agric Minister. He should not have actively colluded with elements in the former administration to illegally rezone the land without parliamentary approval, forcefully evict staff from the Agricultural Mechanization Department, and members of the Vegetable Producers and Exporters Association, just because he and a few politically exposed persons coveted the land,” he stated.

Mr. Ablakwa asserts that the acquisition by the Akim Swedru MP exemplifies a broader issue of state capture and the misuse of public lands under the previous administration.

“Article 257 of Ghana’s 1992 Constitution is clear: public lands belong to all Ghanaians. President Akufo-Addo was merely a caretaker on our behalf. This is certainly not the kind of trusteeship we expected. The GH¢42,000 Cantonments land deal highlights the grave injustice and deep rot associated with how public lands and other state assets were looted under the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia administration,” Mr. Ablakwa wrote.

Ablakwa called for support of the ORAL initiative, which aims to recover assets allegedly looted from the state.

The North Tongu MP is also advocating for the passage of his private member’s bill, which would ban politicians and politically exposed persons from purchasing state assets, and mandate parliamentary oversight and public transparency for any such transactions.

“What is not right is certainly not right. I know there are many patriotic NPP members who will not support such naked injustice. Those who have not looted from the Ghanaian people do not attack ORAL — indeed, they boldly support ORAL, as the Constitution demands of all good citizens. The current generation of politicians must reflect and acknowledge that if those who came before us engaged in such despicable, unpatriotic conduct, no state asset would have been left for us. At this rate, what state assets are we leaving behind for the youth and for subsequent generations? How can we develop our country if all strategic state assets are looted by a few?” he questioned.

“I wholeheartedly agree with Prof. Kwaku Azar that ORAL must go with OPAL (Operation Prevent All Loot) — this is why I am vigorously pursuing my private member’s bill, which seeks to ban politicians and politically exposed persons from purchasing state assets. My bill also makes it mandatory for all transactions involving state assets to receive parliamentary approval. The Ghanaian people must first be convinced that there is even justification for selling that state asset. It is also in the bill that the transactions must go through value-for-money audits, and the amounts involved and beneficiaries must be published for the Ghanaian people to know,” he added.

GRA chases Nana Kwame Bediako for tax evasion of GH¢7 million

In January 2024, the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) accused Ghanaian businessman Nana Kwame Bediako, also known as ‘Cheddar,’ of tax evasion.

“Despite settling a sum of GH¢209,171.00 between 2018 and 2020, he once again failed to file his returns for the post-2020 period,” it said.

Nana Kwame Bediako, also known as ‘Cheddar,’ who has announced his candidacy for the Presidential position in Ghana’s upcoming general elections, has been accused of tax evasion by the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).

According to a reliable source at the GRA, Cheddar had been fined a total of GH¢50,000.00 for his failure to file personal income tax returns from 2013 to 2016.

“Despite settling a sum of GH¢209,171.00 between 2018 and 2020, he once again failed to file his returns for the post-2020 period,” the source said.

The source revealed that for the years 2021-2022, the GRA estimated Cheddar’s tax assessment to be GH¢2,088,228 and GH¢5,096,536 respectively, along with penalties for his failure to file his personal income tax returns.

The source expressed concerns about Cheddar’s involvement in a tax evasion scandal, stating that it not only raised questions about his financial practices but also casts doubt on his commitment to national development.

The source said “as a presidential candidate and self-proclaimed saviour of Ghana, his actions set a worrisome example for the ethical standards expected from individuals in influential positions.”

The significant fines imposed by the GRA highlight the seriousness of Cheddar’s tax evasion, emphasising the importance of accountability and transparency, especially for those who claim to champion the progress of the nation.

The source emphasised the importance of personal income tax as a crucial source of information regarding an individual’s investment activities and asset holdings.

“It plays a vital role in identifying potential unreported or questionable income, including transactions such as asset purchases. The persistent failure to pay penalties instead of simply declaring income raises broader questions about the sincerity and integrity of someone aspiring to lead the nation,” the source said.

“It must be noted that this scandal is not just about an individual’s failure to pay taxes; it is about the societal impact of tax evasion and measuring the rhetoric of an aspiring president against his conduct. Tax evasion diminishes the resources available for essential public services, infrastructure development, and poverty eradication measures,” the source said.

Former sports minister, Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye Former sports minister, Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye

Ace sports presenter Dan Kwaku Yeboah has publicly approved Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye, the former Member of Parliament for Odododiodio, as the ideal candidate for the position of Minister of Sports and Recreation in the John Dramani Mahama government.

Dan Kwaku Yeboah is in awe of the experience and competence of Nii Lante Vanderpuye, whom he describes as Ghana’s best sports minister in the last decade.

Speaking on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo program, Kwaku Yeboah stated that Nii Lante Vanderpuye stands head and shoulders above anyone who has served in the role and deserves to be given the position to advance the progress of Ghana sports.

Kwaku Yeboah reasons that having served as a sports journalist and sports minister, Nii Lante Vanderpuye has the knowledge and personality to navigate the issues in the sector.

“Even under Nana Addo, Nii Lante should have been the sports minister. Because he was once a sports journalist, he understands the industry and what needs to be done to improve the sector. He’s no pushover. During his time, he ensured effective management of resources. He’s been my best sports minister for the past ten years,” he said.

His endorsement comes amid rife reports that Nii Lante Vanderpuye is the frontrunner for the Minister of Sports and Recreation role under the government.

The reports pit him against Kofi Adams as the two people who are being considered for the role, with Nii Lante slightly ahead due to the overwhelming clamor for him.

In March 2013, Nii Lante Vanderpuye was appointed Deputy Minister for Trade and Industry under the John Mahama government.

He served in this role until 2014, when he was reassigned as Deputy Minister for Local Government and Rural Development, a position he held until 2015.

Following a ministerial reshuffle in 2015, Vanderpuye was appointed Minister of Youth and Sports by President John Dramani Mahama, replacing Dr. Mustapha Ahmed.
