Black Queens celebrate their 4-2 penalty win

THE BLACK Queens booked their place in the semifinals of the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after a dramatic 4-2 penalty shootout victory against Algeria, setting up a clash with host nation Morocco.

Ghana dominated the early proceedings and thought they had taken the lead midway through the first half when Stella Nyamekye slotted home. However, the goal was ruled out for offside after a VAR review, leaving the match goalless at the break despite near misses from Doris Boaduwaa and Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah.

Head coach Kim Lars Björkegren made pivotal second-half changes, introducing Evelyn Badu and Princella Adubea to inject fresh energy. Badu nearly snatched a late winner but missed a clear chance, sending the game into extra time.

The Black Queens grew into extra time, with Boaduwaa twice finding herself one-on-one with the goalkeeper but failing to convert. With the deadlock unbroken, the tie went to penalties, where goalkeeper Konlan emerged as the hero, making key saves to seal Ghana’s 4-2 triumph.

The victory propels the Black Queens into their first WAFCON semifinal since 2016. They will face Morocco, last year’s finalists, at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, with kick-off at 19:00 GMT.

Björkegren’s side will now aim to secure Ghana’s first appearance in a WAFCON final since 2006.

962 small-scale mining licences risk revocation over irregularities

0

The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah Kofi-Buah, has warned of the possible revocation of 962 small-scale mining licences as part of efforts to combat illegal mining.

The minister made this known following a committee’s report on the status of small-scale mining licences across the country.

The committee, which was established to review existing mining licences, presented its report to the Minister at the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources on Monday, 21st July, 2025.

Per the committee’s report, a total of 1278 licences were reviewed, out of which 316 were cleared of any irregularities.

The remaining 962 were, however, fraught with multiple irregularities ranging from documentation gaps, process anomalies, and data quality.

Reacting to this, the Minister warned that all 962 defective licences will be permanently revoked in two weeks if the anomalies are not rectified.

He further indicated that his outfit is determined to preserve the environment and will take all necessary steps against persons who flout mining regulations.

He also added that stringent measures are being put in place to reform the whole licensing regime as part of efforts to sanitise mining across the length and breadth of the country.

The Minister is expected to offer more clarity on the latest directive on Wednesday, 23rd July, 2025, during the Government Accountability Series at the Jubilee House, Accra.

Meanwhile, a review of large-scale mining licenses is also expected to begin to deal with irregularities in the large-scale mining sector as well.

“You are a conman” – UTAG-KNUST Boss calls out Mahama over galamsey

0

President of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), KNUST Chapter, Prof. Eric Abavare, has launched a scathing critique of President John Dramani Mahama, accusing him of lacking genuine commitment to the fight against illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.

Speaking to Citi News, Prof. Abavare described the president’s post-election conduct as inconsistent with the strong anti-galamsey stance he displayed during the 2024 campaign period.

His comments follow the signing of a pact between presidential candidates of the two main political parties ahead of the 2024 general elections. The agreement included critical commitments such as the repeal of Legislative Instrument (L.I.) 2462 and the declaration of a state of emergency in areas affected by illegal mining.

According to Prof. Abavare, President Mahama has failed to uphold those pledges since assuming office, casting doubt on his sincerity.

“Mr. President, I do not want to use the word that you are a conman, but from the actions so far, it is evident that you are a conman. You are a conman in the sense that the alacrity and pragmatism with which you exhibited prior to the election are not the same,” he stated.

He further suggested that President Mahama may have vested interests that are hindering a decisive response to the crisis.

“It means that you have some interest. I do not want to be told that because of the GoldBod, gold exploration and gold mining, but that cannot equate the danger,” Prof. Abavare said.

He called on the president to show consistency and follow through with the commitments made, warning that failure to do so will erode public trust and undermine the integrity of governance in tackling illegal mining.

Moliy fires back at NYB over performance critique

Moliy (L) responds to NYB's (R) critique Moliy (L) responds to NYB’s (R) critique

Ghanaian singer Moliy has responded to media personality Yaw Boadu-Ayeboafoh’s criticism of her stage performance.

Yaw Boadu-Ayeboafoh, popularly known as NYB, made comments about Moliy’s stage performance during a discussion on DGN TV’s Entertainment Guide where they reviewed performances from this year’s Ghana Party in the Park event held in the UK.

While talking about which artistes stood out, NYB mentioned that although Moliy has one of the biggest songs globally from Ghana, her performance lacked lasting impact.

“Moliy needs to add certain elements to her performances that could stick in our minds. I even forgot she was there even though she has the biggest song in the world from a Ghanaian. I think they need to add certain elements to her performance to make her stand out when everything is done and dusted,” NYB said.

Moliy did not take his comments lightly and took to her X page on July 21, 2025, to respond.

According to her, growth takes time and experience, and she believes she has already made major progress.

“Technically that’s what experience is supposed to do, make you better, much like anything in life, but go off. I went from zero bookings last year to the most booked Ghanaian artist this summer doing shows worldwide. Dey play,” she posted.

Watch as Ashaiman residents applaud President Mahama for reviving stalled road project

Residents of Ashaiman are excited about the rehabilitation of road infrastructure Residents of Ashaiman are excited about the rehabilitation of road infrastructure

Residents of Ashaiman are excited about the rehabilitation of road infrastructure within the municipality.

This initiative aimed at improving the traffic situation began on Sunday, July 20, 2025.

One local resident publicly praised the current administration led by John Dramani Mahama for its commitment to addressing the challenges citizens face.

“If the government does good work, we will acknowledge it. This area is the Ashaiman traffic light, specifically Hon Ernest Dogbe’s residential area. Mr Dogbe has submitted proposals to the road minister several times during the NPP administration, but his calls fell on deaf ears. They never came to Ashaiman to construct our roads,” the resident lamented.

“The Ashaiman constituency, specifically the road from the Ashaiman traffic light to Melcom market and straight to Afienya road, leads to the motorway. When the NDC came into power, with the help of His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, funds were allocated for these roads to be rehabiliated by the transport minister. Construction works are currently in progress,” he further stated.

According to a post on X by Sikaofficial on July 21, 2025, the ongoing roadworks have become a beacon of hope for the community.

The post’s caption read, “An Ashaiman resident has lauded the current John Dramani Mahama-led administration for its efforts in addressing the challenges of citizens, after sighting road rehabilitation works actively ongoing in the Ashaiman Municipality.”

These projects are not only improving infrastructure but also boosting the community’s morale.

“I will highlight the good work that the NDC government is doing. This road construction will last for many years. This is one of the positive initiatives by Mahama, his ministers, and MPs,” a resident added.

“A contract has been awarded to the Chinese company OMEL, which is leading this road construction initiative,” he noted.

“Stop robbing NPP of its shine” – Miracles slams Bawumia critics

0

Dennis Miracles Aboagye, aide to former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has refuted claims suggesting that Dr. Bawumia was elevated above other flagbearer hopefuls during the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) National Delegates Conference held over the weekend.

Responding to criticisms raised by some party members, including Kwasi Kwarteng, Spokesperson for flagbearer hopeful, Kennedy Agyapong, in an interview on Citi Eyewitness News on Monday, July 21, he described the accusations as baseless and an unfortunate distraction from what he believes was a successful and unifying party event.

“I think it is a sad situation. It is sad that anytime the party is taking its shine and taking its glory, we will have such issues coming up and basically robbing the party of its shine. I mean, this is completely unfounded. Where is this coming from?”

He stressed that the event was not centered on any individual, but rather on the collective interests of the party, with everyone present fully aligned with that focus.

“Everybody at the stadium and all those who were watching on TV acknowledged the beauty of the occasion. First of all, Saturday had nothing to do with contestants. There was no single individual at the venue on Saturday who was more important than the party NPP. It was all about NPP on Saturday.”

Miracles further expressed frustration that the successful nature of the conference was being overshadowed by what he called unfair and divisive narratives.

“I think it is quite unfair on the party that after such a successful event, we have to be saddled with this conversation. It is high time Kwesi Kwarteng and co stop this. It is unfair to the party. Basically, they are robbing the party of its shine.”

“This foundation was built by NPP”- Old Tafo MP Vincent Assafuah on Black Queens’ performance at WAFCON – Ghana Latest Football News, Live Scores, Results

0

The Member of Parliament for Old Tafo, Vincent Ekow Assafuah insists the performance of the Black Queens at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco can be credited to the foundation built by the NPP government in the previous administration.

The Black Queens defied al odds to reach the semi-final of the 2024 WAFCON after beating Algeria on penalties last Saturday.

Ghana will face host nation Morocco in the semi-final on Tuesday as the quest for a first ever WAFCON title continues.

While Ghanaians celebrate the success of the team, Honourable Assafuah believes the NPP government deserves some praise for some of the policies laid down in reviving women’s football in the country.

“Beyond the celebration of this victory lies the story of resilience and long-term investments and sustained commitment, particularly in the often underappreciated area of women’s football. While recent support must be acknowledged, this achievement is undeniably built on the foundation laid by the previous New Patriotic Party’s government,” the ranking member of the Parliamentary select committee on sports said.

“We took deliberate steps to reposition women’s sports as a national priority. It was under the leadership of the NPP that we witnessed the revamping of the women’s league through structed funding and logistical backing,” he added.

Ghana made a return to the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations after qualifying for the tournament for the first time in seven years.

Defence Minister orders probe into ammunition transferred to National Security

0

The Minister of Defence, Dr Edward Omane Boamah, has tasked the National Security Secretariat to investigate the transfer of thousands of rounds of military ammunition from the Ghana Armed Forces to the Secretariat in 2024, which he said remains unaccounted for.

Speaking during the Government Accountability Series on Monday, July 21, Dr. Boamah questioned how such a significant volume of ammunition could be transferred to an agency that does not maintain an active fighting force.

“We have kept our nation safe and stable notwithstanding the irregular transfer of thousands of
rounds of military ammunition in 2024 from the Ghana Armed Forces to the National Security
outfit.

“The reality is that to date, those ammunitions have not been accounted for. How the Ghana Armed Forces could transfer ammunition to the National Security that doesn’t have a fighting force in 2024 is a question that has to be answered.

“The Ghana Armed Forces has passed it on to the National Security Secretariat to investigate since they were the recipient,” he stated.

‘It is dumb to involve your daughter in Agradaa’s imprisonment’

Prophet Kumchacha (R) has slammed Angel Asiamah (L) for involving daughter into Agradaa's court case Prophet Kumchacha (R) has slammed Angel Asiamah (L) for involving daughter into Agradaa’s court case

Nicholas Osei, popularly known as Prophet Kumchacha, has slammed Angel Asiamah for dragging Agradaa’s daughter into the issue bothering on her mother’s incarceration.

It would be recalled that on July 19, 2025, a video of Agradaa’s teenage daughter went viral on social media, where she was seen making a passionate plea for the court to pardon her mother, who is currently serving a 15-year jail term.

In the video, Agradaa’s daughter noted that her mother’s imprisonment has created a void in her life.

Reacting to this development, Prophet Kumchacha, in a video shared on social media on July 20, 2025, described the incident, possibly supervised by Agradaa’s husband, Angel Asiamah, as dumb.

In the video, Kumchacha emphasised that Angel Asiamah’s decision to involve the minor is a wrong move that can negatively affect the child’s future.

“Asiamah, be sensible. There are a lot of people in Nsawam prison for stealing. Some are even there in jail for stealing a tuber of cassava. If you want public sympathy, all you need is a good lawyer.

“Don’t you know you are destroying the small girl’s future? She is even a minor. Involving her in this issue can destroy her life because social media doesn’t forget,” he said.

Parliament approves consideration of Ghana Medical Trust Fund Bill under Certificate of Urgency

0

Parliament has approved the consideration of the bill under a certificate of urgency Parliament has approved the consideration of the bill under a certificate of urgency

The Parliament of Ghana has approved the consideration of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund Bill, 2025, under a certificate of urgency, following its presentation by the Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, on Monday, July 21, 2025.

The decision comes in response to the pressing need to address the rising cases of chronic and non-communicable diseases in the country, with the bill aimed at establishing a sustainable funding mechanism to support affected Ghanaians.

The Ghana Medical Trust Fund Bill, also referred to as the “Mahama Cares” Fund, was laid before Parliament and underwent its First Reading on the same day. The bill seeks to mobilize resources to finance and support individuals living with chronic illnesses, providing financial relief for the cost of care and medication for non-communicable diseases (NCDs).

The urgency of the legislation was underscored by the Health Committee of Parliament, which emphasized the critical need for swift action due to the increasing health crises driven by the upsurge in NCD cases.

In its report, the Health Committee highlighted the extensive stakeholder consultations conducted prior to the bill’s formulation, noting that the groundwork ensures the bill’s readiness for expedited consideration.

“Given the wide stakeholder consultations undertaken prior to the formulation of the Bill and having regard to the impending health crises risk given the upsurge in chronic and non-communicable disease cases, the Ghana Medical Trust Fund Bill, 2025 be considered under a certificate of urgency to facilitate the operationalization of the Fund for the benefit of Ghanaians,” the Committee stated.

The bill is expected to bolster the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) by providing access to the uncapped portion of the National Health Insurance Levy, thereby enhancing funding for medical services.

The Ghana Medical Trust Fund, launched by President Mahama on April 29, 2025, at the University of Ghana Medical Centre, has already garnered significant support.

On May 17, 2025, the Military High Command, led by Lieutenant General William Agyapong, donated a month’s salary to the fund, signaling strong institutional backing. Additionally, the Institute of Leadership and Development (INSLA) commended the Cabinet’s approval of the bill on June 25, 2025, noting its potential to establish a long-term, sustainable funding source for healthcare financing.

The bill is now expected to be taken through a Second Reading following the unanimous approval of the House to consider it under a certificate of urgency on the recommendation of the Health Committee of Parliament.

Despite indicating their support for the consideration of the bill, the Minority noted that the objective of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund in comparison to the NHIS has the potential of leading to duplicity.

Shatta Wale — The ‘Rebel’ Who Defied the System and Transformed Ghanaian Music

0

In the often turbulent waters of Ghana’s entertainment industry, one name consistently sparks both fervent adoration and fierce debate: Shatta Wale.

Often portrayed as a controversial figure, a closer look reveals the story of an artist who, for years, found his brand a deliberate target of traditional media gatekeepers.

What many label as “bullying” on his part is, in reality, a powerful defense against a system designed to control and suppress, a fight that has ultimately paved the way for a more equitable future for Ghanaian musicians.

For far too long, the narrative surrounding Ghanaian music has been shaped by a select few: radio presenters, producers, and industry “kingmakers” who held immense power over artists’ careers. Shatta Wale, born Charles Nii Armah Mensah Jr., refused to conform to this status quo. Recognizing the inherent bias and limitations of traditional outlets, he shrewdly pivoted to online avenues.

Platforms like YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, and more recently, TikTok, became his primary stages. He leveraged these digital spaces to connect directly with his loyal fanbase, the “Shatta Movement,” by passing the conventional channels that sought to dictate his music and persona.

This strategic shift wasn’t merely about promotion; it was a declaration of independence. Shatta Wale actively encouraged his fans to stream his music on all available platforms, from Spotify to Apple Music, empowering them to directly support his craft and ensuring he received a fairer share of the proceeds. This move, while revolutionary, inevitably rattled the established order.

The comfortable control once wielded by gatekeepers began to erode, leading to what many inside sources have confirmed was a concerted effort to sabotage Shatta Wale’sbrand and elevate other artists at his expense. Indeed, several individuals have, over time, publicly confessed to being part of such schemes.

A Champion for Artists, Not a Bully

It is in this context of relentless opposition that Shatta Wale’soften-fiery online presence must be understood. His live Facebook and TikTok sessions, where he confronts his detractors head-on, are not acts of gratuitous aggression but rather a defense mechanism against persistent undermining. These sessions, while sometimes raw and unfiltered, are a direct response to the bullying he endured from a system that sought to silence him.

Despite these battles, it’s crucial to note Shatta Wale’s sustained relationships with a significant number of media personalities. He frequently appears on “friendly” stations, engaging in interviews that showcase his musical vision and connect with a broader audience. This nuanced approach demonstrates that his critiques are aimed at systemic issues, not a blanket animosity towards all media.

The ongoing attempt to brand Shatta Wale as simply a “bully” overlooks the fundamental triggers of his actions. His outspokenness, though at times controversial, has been instrumental in challenging the antiquated structures of the Ghanaian music industry. He has consistently championed forartists to receive their fair due, advocating for better royalties and respect for their creative endeavors. His fight has, in many ways, inspired a new generation of musicians to demand their worth and explore independent avenues for success.

Beyond the Music: A Cross-Generational Icon

Beyond the public spats, Shatta Wale’s career is a testament to remarkable success and entrepreneurial spirit. His high-profile collaboration with international icon Beyoncé on “Already” from “The Lion King: The Gift” album propelled him onto the global stage, solidifying his international appeal.

His strong “bromance” with Jamaican dancehall legend Vybz Kartel has also been a significant influence and endorsement within the global dancehall community.

What truly sets Shatta Wale apart is the breadth of his appeal. His fanbase isn’t confined to a single demographic; it spans generations and diverse social spheres. Recently, the President of Ghana himself was seen enthusiastically singing along to Shatta Wale’s hit song “Mahama Paper” during a performance at the Accra Sports Stadium—a powerful testament to his widespread acceptance.

Many high-profile Ghanaians, including respected men of God, influential politicians, and distinguished academics, openly profess their admiration for his music and impact.

This broad appeal has also made him a magnet for respectable corporate brands. Shatta Wale has enjoyed successful associations with major players like Kasapreko and prominent mobile phone companies, further underscoring his commercial viability and widespread influence. His impact isn’t just limited to Ghana; his fanbase and influence extend across Africa and beyond, making him a truly pan-African and global music force.

His ventures also extend beyond music. Shatta Wale has successfully delved into real estate, demonstrating a keen business acumen. His innovative “Shaxi” ride-hailing service, launched with a significant personal investment, provides employment opportunities for many young Ghanaians, showcasing his commitment to empowering his community.

Those who have had private interactions with Shatta Wale often describe a calm, respectful, and surprisingly humble individual, a stark contrast to his often-provocative public persona. This duality underscores the strategic nature of his public actions, which are often calculated responses aimed at challenging the status quo and securing a better deal for artists.

I end this piece by stating that Shatta Wale’s journey is not one of a simple bully, but rather a visionary who recognized the flaws in a traditional system and dared to challenge it. His “bullying” was a self-defense mechanism, a necessary disruption that has undeniably paved the way for a more artist-centric industry in Ghana.

His successes, from global collaborations and entrepreneurial ventures to his unparalleled cross-generational appeal, stand as a testament to his resilience and unwavering commitment to his craft and the welfare of his fellow musicians. He is, undeniably, a cornerstone of the modern Ghanaian music landscape.

Man Utd slash Garnacho and Sancho transfer prices as INEOS take a major hit

Manchester United are prepared to accept very low offers for Ruben Amorim’s exiled cast-offs – just to get them out of the club. Amorim has banished five players – Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, Jadon Sancho, Antony and Tyrrell Malacia – from training after they all expressed their wish to leave.

While Rashford is finalising a loan move to Barcelona for the upcoming season, the futures of the remaining four are still up in the air, leaving them in a state of uncertainty. The United squad jet off to the US tomorrow (Tuesday) to kick-start their two-week pre-season tour, and Amorim has dropped all four from the travelling group, forcing them to stay behind and train. Such is United’s eagerness to offload them, the club are ready to take a significant loss on their transfer fees.

Previously their collective value was estimated at £150million at their peaks. Three years ago, Rashford was valued at £100m, but the fee Barca will need to pay to secure him permanently at the end of his loan deal in 2026 is now just £40m.

Garnacho’s highest market value was £70m a year ago, but his stock has fallen so drastically that United are willing to accept around £40m for the 20-year-old winger. It’s a similar tale with Jadon Sancho, who was signed from Borussia Dortmund for £73m in 2021.

But United are now content to let him go for £15m, just to be rid of him, although with only a year left on his contract a loan move next season is most likely. Winger Antony, who joined United for £86m in 2022, has also seen his value nosedive.

Interested clubs are now being quoted around £30m to sign him, while a fee of approximately £2m will be accepted for Malacia, who was valued at £20m just a few years ago.

United have previously included players in their tour squad who they intended to sell, such as Romelu Lukaku, who joined the 2019 tour of the Far East and Australia but did not play before his transfer to Inter Milan later that summer.

However, the United board’s support for Amorim’s tough decision to leave his outcast stars behind to train while the rest of the team embark on a profitable three-game tour of the States, highlights the strong backing for the Portuguese head coach’s vision, despite last season’s disappointing 15th-place finish in the Premier League.

“A good president should not be limited by term of office”

Akyem Asuom Krontihene, Nana Boadi Amponim Obodade III, has sparked national debate by calling for a constitutional referendum that would allow former President John Dramani Mahama to serve beyond the current two-term limit if re-elected.

Speaking passionately during a press engagement ahead of Mahama’s thank-you tour in the Eastern Region, the chief questioned the fairness of term limits that, in his view, prevent exceptional leaders from continuing their work. He described Mahama as a “Good Samaritan” who has returned to rescue Ghana, likening his leadership to the redemptive spirit of Ghana’s first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

“In just six months, President Mahama has revived the economy, exposed corruption, and restored national hope,” he said, citing revelations of financial scandals such as the alleged National Service fraud and procurement irregularities. “It was God’s timely intervention that brought him back.”

Nana Boadi extended gratitude to former First Lady Lordina Mahama, whom he praised for her support of her husband’s return to politics. “If I were her, I would have said, ‘You’ve been MP, Vice President, President — what more do you want?’ But she humbly allowed him to return, and for that, we must thank her.”

The Krontihene expressed strong belief in the vision of Mahama’s proposed “Big Push” agenda, which includes a $10 billion investment in infrastructure, job creation, and national development. He argued that such a transformative plan should not be cut short by arbitrary term limits.

“The man is doing a yeoman’s job, dependable, diligent with wisdom and experience.
Can such a leader be limited by time?” he asked, revealing that many opinion leaders and citizens he has engaged support constitutional reform to allow continuity in leadership.

He also expressed confidence in key figures in Mahama’s camp, including Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, whom he described as “a strong, respectful, hardworking, humble lion, and even suggested that Chief of Staff be made the President ‘s Running Mate if the Referendum comes on.

Touching on national security, Nana Boadi warned of past political tensions and urged Ghana’s security agencies to remain vigilant ahead of the next bye elections at Akwatia .
He concluded with a plea for peaceful democratic processes as the country considers its path forward.

“If we want continuous progress,” he said, “we must rethink the structure of our democracy — not for personal gain, but for national prosperity.”

Gov’t to recruit 12,000 into Armed Forces by 2028 – Defence Minister

0

The Minister for Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, has announced the government’s plan to recruit 12,000 new personnel into the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) over a three-and-a-half-year period, beginning in 2025.

Speaking during the Government Accountability Series in Accra on Monday, July 21, Dr. Boamah said the recruitment drive forms part of efforts to boost the operational capacity of the Armed Forces and support Ghana’s industrialisation and food security goals.

“I am excited to announce that, as has been communicated by the Commander-in-Chief, a
comprehensive enlistment and recruitment exercise is to be undertaken with the view to
increasing the man-power strength of the Ghana Armed Forces. Altogether, we are enlisting and
recruiting Twelve Thousand (12, 000) personnel within the next three and a half years,” he stated.

He revealed that future enlistment exercises would target individuals with specific professional qualifications, including agricultural extension officers, artisans, engineers, and biochemists, to meet the evolving needs of the GAF and contribute to national development initiatives.

The Minister also addressed concerns about over 2,000 potential recruits who were left out during the previous administration despite available vacancies at the Army Recruit Training School.

He encouraged them to reapply, provided they still meet the requirements.

“I wish to emphasize that the over 2,000 potential recruits who could not undergo training under the previous administration, even though vacancies existed at the Army Recruit Training School, are strongly encouraged to reapply. Provided they still meet all the established criteria. I urge those who will not qualify at this stage not to lose hope,” he stated.

The large-scale recruitment is expected to enhance the country’s security architecture and provide employment opportunities for the youth, while aligning military capacity with emerging national priorities.

Yaa Asantewaa Girls’ SHS stages late comeback to book national spot

0

Yaa Asantewaa Girls’ Senior High School has pulled off a stunning comeback to win their contest in the Ashanti Regional qualifiers of the 2025 NSMQ, securing a place at the national championship.

In a contest filled with tension and shifting leads, it was Juaben SHS who dominated the early rounds. They led with 21 points at the end of Round One, while Yaa Asantewaa trailed behind with 12 points, tied with Islamic SHS.

In Round Two, Juaben stayed ahead with 20 points, followed by Yaa Asantewaa and Fomena T.I. AMASS both at 15 points, and Islamic SHS at 14. After Round Three, Juaben had extended their lead with 33 points, with Yaa Asantewaa just behind on 31.

But the tide turned dramatically in the final round. Yaa Asantewaa surged ahead to finish the contest with 40 points, overtaking Juaben SHS, who remained at 33. Islamic SHS and Fomena T.I. AMASS ended with 27 and 25 points respectively.

The win marks a return for Yaa Asantewaa Girls’ SHS, who missed qualification for the national competition in 2024. Their triumph ends that dry spell and reaffirms their place among Ashanti’s strongest contenders for the 2025 NSMQ title.

Juaben SHS, despite a strong showing and leading most of the way, will miss out on national qualification.

No need to declare Artiste of the Year – Ola Michael insists

Ola Michael is a popular media personality Ola Michael is a popular media personality

Popular media personality Ola Michael has declared he will stage a “one-man demonstration” if event organisers Charterhouse attempt to release the winner of the 2019 Vodafone (now Telecel) Ghana Music Awards Artiste of the Year award.

It may be recalled that after a violent altercation between the camps of Stonebwoy and Shatta Wale on the night of the awards in 2019, the winner was never announced and has been left blank in the history books.

However, in a series of interviews since that incident, Stonebwoy has been calling on CharterHouse to officially announce him as the winner, claiming that an inside source had revealed to him that he is the winner of the award.

Speaking on United Showbiz on July 19, 2025, Michael described the infamous 2019 night, which saw dancehall artistes Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy clash, including the latter brandishing a firearm on stage, as a traumatic episode for Ghana’s music industry.

“That night was a very traumatic night for the whole country. We had never seen anything like that before,” he reminded viewers.

Michael also questioned why Stonebwoy claims to be the winner of the award, stating that such claims may be disrespectful to the other nominees in the category.

“Why does he think it is he who won it? Who told him he was the winner? No one saw the winner because the envelope was never opened. What if it was someone else in the category?” he questioned.

Ola Michael added that there was no need for the official winner to be announced out of respect for those who were traumatised that night.

He further warned that should CharterHouse proceed to release the official winner, he would personally go on a protest.

“There is no need for Charterhouse to release the name. If they release the name, I will demonstrate,” he said.

Adan Official unveils soul-stirring new single ‘Faded Energy’

0

Adan Official is a Ghanaian rapper Adan Official is a Ghanaian rapper

Ghanaian rapper Adan Official has released a new single titled ‘Faded Energy’, a deeply introspective record that blends emotive lyricism with a raw, melodic soundscape.

Known for his honest storytelling and compelling delivery, Adan uses this track to share a personal journey of self-discovery, disappointment, and ultimately, quiet triumph.

Speaking on the inspiration behind Faded Energy, Adan explained, “Risen through the thoughts of a failing youth till now, I express every deep-felt emotion on a song after a long period of trying to get what I desire.

But after some years I realized that all I was looking for was by my side, never got to see and take it along with me. We fail to see the little wins in our lives, never again will I wait for my big dreams, I’m already living it in my small world.”

This poetic reflection lies at the heart of the track, which explores the emotional toll of chasing elusive dreams while missing out on the beauty of the present.

‘Faded Energy’ serves as both a confession and a breakthrough, a moment where the artist reckons with his past expectations and finds meaning in the progress he has made.

Adan Official’s delivery on the track is raw yet controlled, with poignant bars that echo the struggle of many young Africans searching for identity and purpose in a fast-paced, validation-driven world. The production is stripped down and atmospheric, allowing his words to cut through with powerful clarity.

With ‘Faded Energy,’ Adan continues to establish himself as one of Ghana’s most thoughtful and emotionally resonant rap voices, an artiste unafraid to bare his soul and speak to the inner lives of his generation.

‘Faded Energy’ is a strong reminder that sometimes the most impactful victories are not in the spotlight but in the quiet moments of personal clarity.

Maurice Ampaw slams Ken Agyapong’s call for ‘change,’ backs Bawumia for 2028 election victory

0

Lawyer Maurice Ampaw has expressed his disapproval of Kennedy Agyapong’s recent gestures at the NPP’s National Delegates Conference, particularly his call for “change.”

“I was so disappointed when I saw Kennedy Agyapong giving a signal with both hands for ‘change.’ Change for what?” Ampaw questioned.

He added, “Kennedy, you know I’m not against you, but that sign for ‘change’ you made, what does it imply? Are you calling for a change in the NDC or the NPP? For what reason? You’re in opposition; it was inappropriate to signal for ‘change’ at that rally. It was wrong.”

Ampaw criticised the “change” gestures, arguing they were unnecessary.

He further stated, “What are you changing? It isn’t campaign time. You need to be consistent and support Bawumia. Anyone who intends to contest for the presidency deserves recognition; we appreciate all of you. However, Bawumia is our best choice.”

Ampaw believes Dr Bawumia is in a strong position, as noted in a post on X by Sikaofficial dated July 21, 2025.

The accompanying caption read, “Lawyer Maurice Ampaw voiced his disappointment over the ‘change’ sign gestures made by Kennedy Agyapong during the NPP’s National Delegates Conference. He argued that there was no need to call for change, as Dr Bawumia requires just 9% more votes to secure victory in the 2028 elections.”

The post elaborated, “According to Ampaw, the NDC has already exhausted its propaganda against Dr Bawumia, which in his view, makes the former Vice President the strongest candidate for the party going into the next election.”

Ampaw emphasised that Dr Bawumia needs only 9% more votes to surpass the 50% threshold necessary for victory in 2028.

He remarked, “Wherever your brother has climbed, support him further, and you’ll also rise. Bawumia has reached a stage where he needs just 9% of the votes to win. It’s not the time to start over. Whatever needed to be said about Bawumia was already said in 2024. The insults and propaganda have been exhausted.”

According to Ampaw, any attempts by the NDC to undermine Dr Bawumia have already failed, stating, “There’s nothing that the NDC or anyone else can use against Bawumia in 2028.”

BoG assures GUTA of forex availability amid concerns

GUTA recently complained over the unavailability of forex at banks to conduct business GUTA recently complained over the unavailability of forex at banks to conduct business

The Bank of Ghana has assured the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) that it is working to ensure sufficient foreign exchange (forex) is available to traders on the exchange market.

This comes in response to recent complaints by GUTA regarding the shortage of dollars on the market.

The Union expressed concern over the persistent difficulties traders face in accessing foreign exchange through the banking system.

Speaking at the Graphic Business/Stanbic Bank Breakfast Meeting in Accra on July 15, 2025, Dr Obeng highlighted how the lack of reliable forex access is severely impacting business operations, particularly for importers and small-scale traders.

He noted that the situation has forced many traders to turn to the black market, where exchange rates are significantly higher and more volatile.

“There are many reasons why traders choose to do business with particular financial institutions. As I speak, we [traders] are finding it extremely difficult to access foreign exchange at the banks. The forex simply isn’t available, and we have some bankers present at this event who, I believe, should address this situation,” he stated.

However, in a statement sighted by GhanaWeb Business and issued by the GUTA President, the Association acknowledged the Bank of Ghana’s assurance to promptly address the issue.

“Following numerous complaints by members of the business community about difficulties in accessing foreign exchange from commercial banks, a meeting was held between the Bank of Ghana and the leadership of GUTA, during which the Bank assured the business community that there is enough forex available, and that there is no cause for alarm,” the statement noted.

It further stated that the central bank is currently engaging commercial banks to determine the cause of the perceived forex shortage and urged calm in the market.

“The Bank of Ghana also intimated that it will communicate with the commercial banks to find out the cause of the perceived shortage, and will do everything necessary to resolve the problem. In light of this, the leadership of GUTA is asking members of the business community to remain calm as the Central Bank works to resolve the issue,” it added.

The statement concluded with a call for feedback from members: “However, members should report to us if the problem persists.”

Bawumia deserved special protocol at NPP Confab

0

The Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Divine Agorhom, has defended the party’s decision to allow its 2024 presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, to address delegates during the just-ended National Delegates Conference.

His remarks come in response to complaints from some presidential hopefuls within the party who expressed dissatisfaction over being denied the opportunity to speak at the event held on Saturday, July 19, at the University of Ghana Stadium in Accra.

While they allege being sidelined, Dr. Bawumia was granted the opportunity to speak, sparking accusations of unfair treatment.

Speaking in an interview with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Eyewitness News on Monday, July 21, Mr. Agorhom dismissed the concerns and insisted that the protocol afforded Dr. Bawumia was appropriate, considering his position as a former Vice President and the NPP’s immediate past flagbearer.

He clarified that no official nominations for the party’s next presidential candidate have been opened, and as such, no individual currently holds the status of a presidential aspirant.

“We must put it on record that as we speak now, we have not opened nominations. So, we don’t have any aspirants for that matter. We’re all equals. We’re all equal party members. Except for the fact that we had a former Vice President in our mix, so we needed to give him that protocol, that respect,” he stated.

Responding to the criticism over Dr. Bawumia’s address to delegates, Agorhom stated that the former Vice President merely waved at party faithful and delivered brief remarks, which should not be seen as a breach of fairness.

“He [Bawumia] walked around to wave at the party people, some of whom had come from various regions. I don’t see anything wrong with that. The opportunity Bawumia had was to wave at the party people. Given the opportunity to wave at the people, what’s wrong with that? What is the problem with this?

“We should be careful not to take away a successful conference by looking for faults where there aren’t any. The matter should rest,” he stated.

The NPP’s National Delegates Conference was held to reaffirm party structures, mobilise support and amend its constitution ahead of the 2028 general elections.

Ghana safe despite ammunition transfer concerns

0

Ghana’s Minister of Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, has assured the public that the country remains safe, stable, and peaceful, despite recent concerns surrounding national security.

Speaking about the current state of the nation, at the Government Accountability Series in Accra on Monday, July 21, Dr. Boamah stated:

“It is with confidence and pride that I state that to a very large extent, Ghana is SAFE, STABLE, PEACEFUL AND READY TO EXPERIENCE HER GOLDEN AGE UNDER THE RESET AGENDA.”

His remarks come amid questions about the transfer and handling of military ammunition in 2024. Dr. Boamah acknowledged the irregular transfer of thousands of rounds of ammunition from the Ghana Armed Forces to the National Security outfit, noting that the whereabouts of the transferred ammunition remain unaccounted for.

Despite this, the Defence Minister emphasised that the government has maintained national stability and order, underscoring the country’s readiness to enter what he described as a “golden age” under the Reset Agenda.

“We have kept our nation safe and stable notwithstanding the irregular transfer of thousands of rounds of military ammunition in 2024 from the Ghana Armed Forces to the National Security outfit. Ammunitions which have since not been accounted for,” he stated.

Black Queens players celebrating their win against Algeria Black Queens players celebrating their win against Algeria

Comfort Doyoe Cudjoe-Ghansah, Member of Parliament for Ada and First Deputy Majority Whip, has sent a strong message of support and caution as the Black Queens gear up for a historic semifinal clash against hosts Morocco at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

The Black Queens advanced to the semifinals for the first time since 2016 after edging past Algeria in a nerve-racking 4-2 penalty shootout following a goalless draw on Saturday, July 19, 2025.

They now face a formidable challenge against the Atlas Lionesses at the Stade Olympique de Rabat on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, with a coveted place in the final on the line.

In her message, Cudjoe-Ghansah extended warm congratulations to the team, praising the players not only for their resilience but for inspiring countless young girls across the country to believe in their sporting dreams.

“This victory doesn’t only bring glory to Ghana, but it also ignites hope of every young girl who dreams of rising through sports to represent our beloved country,” she said.

As excitement builds for the semifinal, the First Deputy Majority Whip urged the Queens to stay focused and carry the nation’s hopes with pride.

“We urge them to carry the hope and prayers of the entire nation with pride and confidence,” she added.

But alongside her praise, the Ada MP delivered a firm reminder to all political actors and Ghanaians to resist using the team’s remarkable journey for political gain.

“This is woman power, it is not political power but women power, and the women are performing so nobody should politicise them. All we need is victory,” she stressed.

A win for the Black Queens will see them play in their first WAFCON final in nearly two decades.

Usyk Stops Dubois To Cement Legacy As Undisputed Heavyweight Champion

Oleksandr Usyk with his titles

Oleksandr Usyk reaffirmed his status as boxing’s premier heavyweight with a clinical fifth-round stoppage of Daniel Dubois at Wembley Stadium, solidifying his place in history as the first undisputed heavyweight champion of the four-belt era.

The 38-year-old Ukrainian, already a former undisputed cruiserweight king and Olympic gold medallist, weathered Dubois’ early pressure before dismantling the Briton with trademark precision and timing. Usyk first floored Dubois with a sharp lead right hook during a fierce exchange, sending the Londoner to his knees.

Though Dubois beat the count, Usyk sealed the contest moments later with a perfectly timed left hook, toppling his rival onto his back. Unable to recover, Dubois was counted out as Usyk dropped to his knees in tears of triumph.

The victory extends Usyk’s dominance over Dubois, whom he previously stopped in 2023 after surviving a controversial beltline strike that Dubois’ camp insisted should have counted as a knockdown. Dubois, riding high from a stunning knockout of Anthony Joshua last year, entered the rematch with renewed belief and began confidently, pressing forward and landing heavy rights. But Usyk’s slick southpaw jab, feints, and surgical counters gradually wore him down.

With the win, Usyk remains unbeaten at heavyweight, adding another chapter to his storied career. He never lost the IBF title in the ring but was forced to vacate it ahead of this bout after prioritizing his rematch with Tyson Fury. Dubois, elevated to full champion before this fight, now sees his reign end abruptly.

“Thirty-eight is only the start,” Usyk said afterward. “This is for the people, for our world. Now I want to rest and go home to my family.”

A deflated Dubois, 27, vowed to return: “I gave everything I had. There are things I could have sharpened up on, but I’ll be back.”
