UNICEF: 138 million children doing child labour globally

0

Cologne, Jun. 11, (dpa/GNA) – Nearly 138 million minors were engaged in child labour worldwide in 2024, according to a new report released on Wednesday by UNICEF and the International Labour Organization (ILO).

The figure includes around 54 million children in work likely to jeopardize their health and safety.

Child labour occurs most frequently in agriculture, with the worst-hit region being sub-Saharan Africa, where 87 million children are affected.

The figures show a decline in child labour to almost 138 million in the 2021-24 period, down from 160 million in the 2016-20 period.

Nevertheless, the target of eliminating child labour by 2025, included in UN Development Goals, will not be reached.

The report came ahead of the World Day Against Child Labour which is being marked on Thursday.

“The new child labour report underlines the grim reality that millions of children are still being denied the right to learn, to play and simply to be a child, despite all progress,” UNICEF Germany head Christian Schneider said.

The successes achieved pointed the way ahead through legal protection, better social protection, investment in free and high-quality education and work with dignity and fair pay for adults.

These were “effective instruments for protecting children from child labour,” Schneider said.

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) raided the offices of Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Limited (SML) in Accra, reportedly arresting three top directors of the company.

The operation was in relation to the revenue assurance contract the company signed with the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo government and the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), which was later suspended in 2024 following public criticisms of the contract and after an audit report.

The OSP has indicated that the former Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, whom it has declared wanted, is a suspect in a number of its corruption-related cases under investigation, including the GRA–SML revenue assurance contract.

Leaked letters sighted by GhanaWeb indicated that the raid on the SML offices in Accra came after the company told the OSP that it could not provide certain information about the company as requested.

A letter dated March 20, 2025, from the lawyers of SML to the Director of Investigations at the OSP, titled “Re: Request for Information and Production of Document,” indicated that the company needed more time.

In another letter, dated March 27, 2025, the lawyers broke down the requests from the OSP into categories: what their client had provided, what it could not produce, and what it did not have in its possession.

The lawyers, Sam Okudzeto and Associates, listed the following as the requests of the OSP that had been met:

– Employee master list, together with CVs of key management members and technical staff

– All proposals (technical and financial) submitted by SML to the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) and Ministry of Finance (MoF)

– All correspondence between SML and GRA and MoF

– Contract agreements and related documents regarding contracts signed with GRA

– Contract agreements and related documents with GRA and MoF

– List of all equipment and software purchased by SML for the GRA/MoF projects, outlining the suppliers, cost price, date of acquisition, date of installation and location of installation

– All performance reports submitted by SML to GRA/MoF – 1st batch (second batch to be delivered next week)

– Annual financial statements and management accounts of SML for the period from 2017 to 2024

– General ledger of SML for each of the 2017 to 2024 accounting years.

Also, the OSP’s requests that SML said it did not have in its possession are:

– Responses received from the GRA and MoF in respect of proposals submitted by SML

– Minutes of all meetings held with GRA and/or MoF

– All invoices submitted by SML to GRA/MoF for payments

– Receipts issued to GRA/MoF for payments received

– Cheque register

– Receivable and payable reports for the stated period

– Fixed asset register

– Evidence of capital introduced by shareholders of SML

– Chart of accounts of SML

– Accounting procedures manual of SML, if any

– Any other relevant information.

For the following requests, the company said it would not provide the documents.

It stated:

“Pursuant to section 29(3) of the Office of the Special Prosecutor Act, 2017 (Act 959), our client further instructs us that it is unable to provide the remaining documents listed in your letter of 3rd March 2025, and numbered 6, 13, 15, 16, 18, 22 and 24 for the following reasons:

“1. Our client has an obligation not to disclose such documents to third parties because of its contractual obligations on non-disclosure and confidentiality.

“2. Secondly, our client asserts its statutory right not to self-incriminate. Contrary to what the law requires, your letter did not provide the exact nature, type and scope of the corruption or corruption-related offences that your office is investigating. In other words, your letter fails to state which of the offences listed in section 79 of Act 959 your office is investigating against our client. In the circumstances, our client is asserting its privilege against self-incrimination provided under section 97 of the Evidence Act, 1975 (NRCD 323).”

Ken Agyapong’s argument against Bawumia not tenable

0

A former National Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akomea, has reacted to recent comments by Kennedy Agyapong in Mampong in the Ashanti Region and described the assertions as not true.

Mr Agyapong, a former Assin Central Member of Parliament and a presidential aspirant as part of his preparatory works towards Election 2028 ahead of the NPP’s presidential primary for that election had told some party members in Mampong that they should reflect on the current state of the party and be cautious against overlooking performance in decisions about leadership selection.

He was contributing to internal conversations over the party’s future and the implications of its recent electoral performance under Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the party’s 2024 flagbearer.

He argued that poor electoral performance should not be rewarded with another opportunity to lead the party into the next national election.

“Let no one be deceived,” Mr Agyapong said. “Our party has a history of rewarding strong candidates. If you lead us into an election and perform abysmally, you should not expect another chance.”

He challenged the view that the NPP has a culture of giving its presidential candidates multiple opportunities, stating that this only applies when the candidate’s first attempt demonstrates significant promise.

“In 1992, Prof. Adu Boahen, despite being a hero of our democratic struggle, was not given another opportunity after losing that election. He was a principled man who sacrificed for the country, yet the party moved on because performance matters,” Mr Agyapong asserted.

He contrasted that precedent with the experiences of former President John Agyekum Kufuor and current President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, both of whom were allowed to contest a second time after strong showings in their initial bids.

“Kufuor campaigned for barely a few months in 1996 and still made a remarkable impact. That performance earned him the trust of the party to try again in 2000—and he won. Nana Addo also showed electoral strength before getting a second chance,” he noted.

“The facts are there. If someone leads us to one of our worst electoral outcomes, we cannot pretend as if that didn’t happen. This is a serious political party. We don’t hand out leadership as a consolation prize,” he stated emphatically.

 Watch the attached video below

But reacting to Mr Agyapong, Nana Akomea in a radio interview with Citi FM, which was monitored by Graphic Online on Wednesday evening said “many of the things my brother Kennedy said in Mampong are simply not true or they are not tenable.”

He disagreed with the assertion by Mr Agyapong that in 1996, former President Kufuor had only three months to campaign in the presidential election and that was why the NPP gave Kufuor a second chance in 1998.

Nana Akomea said that statement was not true and that 1996 Kufuor was elected at Legon in April 1996, which gave him a clear eight months before the elections.

He said the delegates in 1998 gave Kufuor a second chance because of the hard work he put in 1996 against Rawlings.

He said if the length of time to campaign available for a flagbearer was what was to be considered, then it was rather Prof Adu Boahen who had two months to campaign against Rawlings in 1992.

“Then Adu Boahen would have been selected again in 1996 instead of Kufuor but Kennedy Agyapong is saying that Ghanaians are saying that if the NPP brought he [Kennedy], the NPP will win the elections. I don’t know which Ghanaians are saying so, or which poll that had been done that shows so.

“And then he says that Bawumia lost the elections because of the religious factor, that the Christians simply did not want to vote for a Muslim. If you bring religion into this campaign it is a terrible mistake. What you are saying is that the Muslims do not have a stake in the party. What are you going to say to Muslims when you win the flagbearership?”

He said it is not in the interest of Ken Agyapong or anybody to be campaigning based on exclusion.

He said in any case Dr Bawumia did better in over 50 constituencies where the NPP parliamentary candidates were Christians.

And also the Prof Oquaye committee that the party set up, religion was not a key factor when party members appeared before the committee, he said.

Wontumi must plead his case in court not with Mahama – Manasseh tells NPP elders

0

Manasseh Azure Awuni an award-winning investigative journalist has sent a message to the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

According to Manasseh Azure Awuni the NPP should allow their Ashanti Region Chariman Bernard Antwi Bosiako commonly known as Chairman Wontumi to plead his case in court.

He noted that Chariman Wontumi has been accused of criminal conduct and must plead his case in court and not with President John Dramani Mahama.

NDC remains supreme over anyone else – Fifi Kwetey tells party members

0

General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, has reaffirmed the party’s supremacy over individuals, warning against what he described as growing personal ambitions that undermine the collective identity of the NDC.

Speaking during the party’s 33rd-anniversary commemorations on Tuesday June 10, he cautioned members who treat the NDC as a mere platform for personal advancement, reminding them that loyalty to the party must supersede allegiance to any individual.

“The reason why some of them are in this party is because there is a vehicle that will win elections for them. So then it means that we have many among us who have become convenient members of our party and some of these convenient members even have the audacity to want to aspire for the leadership of this great party. How dare you?” he said.

He stressed that the NDC is the enduring institution that must command the utmost loyalty—above individuals, political titles, or even state power.

“This party is the supreme vehicle and that is a message this morning I want to reach even the Jubilee House. Even the Flagstaff House must appreciate the NDC is a supreme vehicle. Even leaders of our party will come and go but the party remains. Presidents and vice presidents will come and go but the party remains and that must always be number one loyalty.”

Kwetey also expressed concern about internal divisions and waning commitment to the party’s historical roots, taking issue with some leaders’ reluctance to engage in traditional NDC commemorations such as the June 4 uprising anniversary.

“It will come in a place where individuals feel all allegiance to individuals and not to the party. Celebrations such as June 4, which is the very spirit and the foundation of our party—and you have even members of the functional executives of our party who don’t want to have anything to do with June 4 celebrations. How dare you?” he urged.

Kwame Pianim: Mahama is the only one who can reset Ghana; he listens

Mahama is the only one who can reset Ghana; he listens

0

Renowned economist Kwame Pianim has praised President John Dramani Mahama for his attentive leadership, describing him as the only leader capable of “resetting Ghana” amid pressing national challenges.

Speaking at the Jubilee House in Accra on Wednesday June 11 when the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) paid a courtesy call on the President, he highlighted the president’s responsiveness, recalling how teachers approached Mahama with their concerns, confident that he would listen and act.

“Here we tend to underpay our teachers but with you as a listening president, I was happy when they were coming; they said let’s go and talk to the president — I said with this president if he tells you he is going to do something, he will do it,” Pianim stated.

He contrasted Mahama’s leadership with unmet promises by others, referencing a failed promise of 10,000 houses for teachers that never materialised.

“Someone told them he was going to give them 10,000 houses, they got zero. I told them this is a listening president.”

Pianim urged all Ghanaians, across political divides, to rally behind Mahama. “Of the 35, 36 million Ghanaians alive, you are the only one who can reset Ghana for us. I have been talking to the other people on the other side; when I put on my political hat, all of us have to make democracy work and support you because if you fail us — this is a historic opportunity for Ghana to get on the right path.”

He further encouraged the president to govern beyond political pressures: “You are the right person, you don’t need the voters, you don’t need the party, do the best for Ghana and leave a legacy.”

Mahama does what he says he will do – Pianim

0

Economist Kwame Pianim has backed President John Mahama as the most capable leader to navigate the nation’s current challenges.

This follows a productive engagement between the President and the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) at the Jubilee House today.

Mr Pianim described Mahama’s leadership style as exceptional and responsive, particularly commending his hands-on approach to addressing educators’ concerns.

“Here we tend to underpay our teachers but with you as a listening president, I was happy when they were coming; they said let’s go and talk to the president — I said with this president if he tells you he is going to do something, he will do it,” Pianim stated.

Comparing him to previous administrations, Mr Pianim indicated that “someone told them he was going to give them 10,000 houses, they got zero.”

“I told them this is a listening president,” he explained.

Mr Pianim urged Ghanaians to rally behind the President’s RESET campaign.

Alban Bagbin (R) has said he will not refer Dr Ayew Afriye (L) to the Privileges Committee Alban Bagbin (R) has said he will not refer Dr Ayew Afriye (L) to the Privileges Committee

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has announced that the Ranking Member on the Health Committee, Dr Nana Ayew Afriye, will not be referred to the Privileges Committee following chaotic scenes in Parliament on Tuesday, June 10, 2025.

Addressing the House on Wednesday, June 11, 2025, he explained that the matter would not be referred to any committee.

Alban Bagbin stated that the disagreements would be resolved through open discussions among parliamentary leadership and Members of Parliament.

“… however, the situation is always right on the floor. I want members to take this in good faith. This is not a matter to be referred to any committee. It’s a matter that I have discussed with leadership, and we have agreed that it should be resolved. And we will solve it here openly for all of us to be guided, so that in future we don’t fall foul of the law,” he stated.

On Wednesday, June 11, 2025, the House was briefly adjourned following a heated argument between the Minority and the presiding Speaker of Parliament over the refusal to allow a statement on the ongoing strike by the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA).

Tensions escalated when parliamentary marshals nearly removed the Ranking Member on the Health Committee, Dr Nana Ayew Afriye, from the Chamber.

The Member of Parliament for Effiduase/Asokore visibly agitated, had risen to demand that Parliament address the nationwide strike of nurses, which has severely impacted healthcare delivery in the country.

Trust Mahama to deliver on his promises – MP

The Member of Parliament for Builsa South, Dr Clement Apaak, has encouraged Ghanaians to continue to keep their trust in President John Dramani Mahama to deliver on his promises.

This comes on the back of media reports that the government has reclaimed the Finance Ministry bungalow sold to the executive secretary of the former President Akufo-Addo’s administration, Mr Asante Bediatuo.

I kept my six children united despite having them with three men – Maame Dokono

0

Maame Dokono said she raised all her six children together Maame Dokono said she raised all her six children together

Veteran Ghanaian actress and broadcaster, Grace Omaboe, popularly known as Maame Dokono, says she made a deliberate decision to raise all six of her children together, even though they were from three different men.

“They grew up together nicely because I don’t leave my children with the men. When I’m going, I go with them. You’re growing, and while you’re growing, you see that this is your sibling. And that’s because you’ve been together always and know he or she is family,” she said.

Maame Dokono was speaking at A Convergence of Mothers, an event held at La Palm Royal Beach Hotel in Accra and organised by media personality, MzGee.

The veteran actress, who had two children with each of her three partners, said she never allowed the dynamics of her relationships to determine how her children were raised.

“I made sure I gave them a good education. While I was growing up, I made sure I took them abroad. One is a medical doctor, and one is an engineer. They went first, and then the twins followed. For the twins, it wasn’t difficult because the other one worked on the documents for the other twin,” she said.

Despite juggling multiple jobs, she maintained a strong bond with each of her children and ensured they never lacked what they needed.

“I was doing about seven jobs at the same time. Whenever I travelled and returned, I bought each of them what they liked. I think because the children were all with me, I was always busy,” she recalled.

Now in her later years, Maame Dokono says her decision to keep her family close was worth every sacrifice. Her advice to single mothers: be present, be intentional, and work hard.

“Work and earn more so you can take care of your children. Never let your children be in need. And no matter what you have, let your children know they should appreciate what they have, no matter how little it is,” she added.

The event, themed “Yesterday’s Daughters, Today’s Mothers,” created a space for intergenerational conversations on motherhood, exploring challenges and lessons across time.

24-Hour Economy: Tema, Takoradi ports to operate round-the-clock soon

0

The government is set to declare Tema and Takoradi ports as 24-hour operational hubs following the official rollout of the national 24-hour economy initiative on July 1, 2025.

President John Dramani Mahama announced during his address at the ongoing Ghana Horticulture Expo on Wednesday, June 11, 2025, highlighting the pivotal role of logistics and exports in Ghana’s economic transformation.

“We are also implementing a game-changing strategy, which is the 24-hour economy, to unlock Ghana’s production potential across all sectors,” the President said.

“I am pleased to announce that from July 1, the 24-hour Economy policy will be ready to go into operation.”

According to President Mahama, the policy aims to boost productivity and revenue generation by promoting continuous economic activity, particularly in sectors like agribusiness and exports.

He noted that the initiative will significantly benefit the horticulture industry by enhancing the speed and efficiency of moving perishable goods such as pineapples, vegetables, and herbs from farms to international markets.

“This policy will provide the framework for continued production, processing, and logistics in horticulture,” he explained. “It allows perishable goods to move swiftly from the field to international shelves, thereby minimising losses and maximising value.”

He further disclosed that the Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Agri-business, and the Ministry of Transport are collaborating with key agencies such as the Ghana Revenue Authority, the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority, and the Ghana Shippers’ Council to operationalise 24-hour services at Tema and Takoradi ports.

EOCO and NIB investigate Ken Ofori-Atta, extradition processes underway

0

Former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta is facing deepening legal troubles, as both the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) and the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) have declared him a wanted man.

The two state agencies have reportedly launched separate, active investigations into Mr. Ofori-Atta’s financial dealings during his tenure as Finance Minister, signaling an escalation in the scrutiny surrounding his stewardship of the public purse.

This development comes amid ongoing efforts by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) to get Mr. Ofori-Atta to answer questions about alleged financial misconduct.

Speaking exclusively to JoyNews, the Deputy Attorney General, Justice Srem-Sai, confirmed that the government has now initiated processes to extradite Mr. Ofori-Atta from abroad, where he is currently believed to be.

“The arrest comes in many forms. You can arrest him and keep him temporarily, but beyond that, there must be a formal extradition process,” Justice Srem-Sai explained.

“So the fact that you are on the Red Notice is not automatic that there is an arrest warrant for which you will be extradited.”

He further clarified that the Office of the Attorney General is leading the coordination of extradition efforts with foreign governments.

“We are currently in the process of taking steps to have him extradited to Ghana,” he stated.

For the extradition to be successful, the Deputy AG stated that the alleged crimes Mr. Ofori-Atta is being investigated for must also be considered crimes in the country where he is located.

“We make a formal application to the law enforcement agency in that country. They will place him under arrest, and he will go through extradition proceedings,” the Deputy Attorney General noted.

“We are in the process with law enforcement in the U.S. to actively look for him,” Justice Srem-Sai confirmed, while noting that other jurisdictions are also under consideration depending on where he is eventually found.

Upon arrival in Ghana, he stated that Mr. Ofori-Atta will be arrested, cautioned, and formally charged, saying that the legal process would then proceed with possible bail considerations and trial.

The former minister was earlier declared wanted by the OSP following months of failed attempts to get him to appear for questioning. With EOCO and NIB now actively involved, the pressure on Ofori-Atta has significantly intensified.

Take deadbeat fathers to court – Legal practitioner urges single mothers

0

Abena said that women have the right to report any breach directly to the relevant authorities Abena said that women have the right to report any breach directly to the relevant authorities

Legal practitioner, Abena Boakye, has advised single mothers not to hesitate in taking legal action against fathers who neglect their responsibilities, urging them to use the Family Tribunal to demand child maintenance.

Speaking at the ‘A Convergence of Mothers,’ a forum held in Accra and hosted by media personality, MzGee, the lawyer emphasised that the legal system provides clear channels through which women can enforce maintenance obligations and ensure their children are cared for.

“People talk about the fact that some men don’t take care of their child. Please, mothers, you can go to the Family Tribunal for maintenance. You drive the man to court. It actually works,” she said.

The lawyer explained that once a court order is issued, women have the right to report any breach directly to the police and relevant authorities if the man fails to uphold his part of the agreement.

“When the fathers renege along the line after being responsible for a few months after the court decision, the women have the right to report to the police station, fill out a form, and bring a copy back to the court and Social Welfare,” she noted.

She disclosed that the courts are empowered to take stringent action in cases where fathers deliberately avoid their responsibilities, including issuing bench warrants and publicising the offender’s identity.

“In some instances, we issue bench warrants because if you don’t do the extreme, they won’t come back. There has been a case someone was evading maintenance; we hoisted his picture at Kotoka International Airport. For my boss, she would even publish it in the dailies,” she said.

Her call was part of a broader conversation on the challenges facing single mothers in Ghana and the need to empower them with legal knowledge and practical tools to protect their children’s welfare.

Themed “Yesterday’s Daughters, Today’s Mothers,” the event brought together women from various fields to share experiences and insights on raising children in Ghana’s changing social landscape.

It featured panel discussions on legal rights, parenting, child welfare, and mental health.

Abena Boakye’s contribution highlighted the role of the justice system in supporting mothers, while also challenging societal norms that often leave women to shoulder the burden of parenting alone.

Dr Tanko Rashid 'Computer' refutes 'fake' PhD allegations Dr Tanko Rashid ‘Computer’ refutes ‘fake’ PhD allegations

The Deputy Director of Elections and IT for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and Acting CEO of the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC), Dr Rashid Tanko-Computer, has addressed the the controversy surrounding his PhD credentials.

According to him, “I was accepted into some of the top schools across the region, but at that time, I didn’t have enough money to attend. I studied at the Tamale-Bimbila School, which is my village school. At an early age, I earned the nickname ‘Computer’ because, during that period, secondary education was reduced from five years to three years. Unfortunately, when I entered the first year, I fell seriously ill and was bedridden for almost 12 months

“I suffered from an illness that was prevalent in my area. I believe it was a spiritual attack on my leg, which kept me down for nearly a year. During this time, we had two Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO) teachers who came from the UK to teach us — one taught English, and the other taught Mathematics. They were instrumental in our education. One of them, Madam Katherine, taught Mathematics, and her methods were challenging for my classmates to grasp. I was the only one who could understand her teachings. While I was bedridden, a friend would bring me notes from class, and I would copy and study them in bed. When the end-of-year exams came around, the headmaster insisted that I be allowed to take them.”

He further explained that; “I was transported on a bicycle every day to sit for the exam. Despite missing a whole year of classes, I was able to take the exam and ended up topping my class. That’s how I got the nickname ‘Computer.'”

According to a report by myjoyonline.com dated June 11, Tanko-Computer was responding to the allegations questioning the authenticity of his doctoral degree, which has sparked heated debates online.

“When I read a book, I remember it perfectly. Even if you ask me about it in 100 years, I will repeat everything for you. I was born with this gift; it runs in my family. I believe God was very generous to me after I lost my parents at a young age. When I pick up a document to read, it just sticks in my mind,” he remarked.

He also shared, “On the math paper that day, I scored 98 out of 100, while the second-place student scored 57. I still remember that. After seeing my results, Madam Katherine said, ‘This is a computer man.’ At the time, I didn’t even know what computers were in my village. That’s when people began calling me ‘Computer,’ and the name stuck with me, so I had to gazette the name ‘Computer’ and add it to my name. Many people don’t know my real name is Rashid; they recognise me solely as ‘Computer.’ If I say Rashid, people don’t know who I am; even my bosses refer to me as ‘Computer.'”

Dr. Rashid expressed his frustration over the unfounded claims, stating, “I don’t respond to idiots.”

He emphasised that his academic credentials are publicly verifiable and that he has consistently demonstrated his expertise through his work.

“If you go to party quarters across the country and ask for Tanko Rashid, people may not know who that is. But mention ‘Computer,’ and it’s like WiFi — everyone knows,” he shared.

He then recounted his journey to Accra.

“After finishing secondary school, I attended teacher training college. I would have elaborated on my academic journey, but time is limited. Out of 103 students who took the first exam, only two of us passed: me and one other lady, who was fortunate to sit next to me. In a way, I helped her succeed. I would have entered university at that time, but due to financial constraints, I attended teacher training college to support myself, and later on, I became a professional teacher.

“I was fortunate to win an award at teacher training college as one of the best students. During that time, there was a shortage of teachers for secondary schools. When I graduated, I was supposed to be placed in JHS or primary schools; secondary schools were meant for graduates and diploma holders. “

Dr Rashid urged his detractors to focus on constructive criticism rather than personal attacks.

Despite the allegations, Dr Rashid’s professional achievements and contributions speak for themselves.

“The wisdom of the Ghana Education Service (GES) saw my talent and decided I shouldn’t be sent to JSS to teach, so I was placed directly in a secondary school to teach. That’s something many people don’t know: as the CEO of GIFEC, my journey as a ‘Computer’ started a long time ago.”

Watch Tokyo’s over-80s still going strong

0

Some over aged players, playing in the Tokyo Senior Football League Some over aged players, playing in the Tokyo Senior Football League

In the heart of Tokyo, a group of senior citizens are rewriting the rules of ageing, one kick at a time.

The Tokyo Senior Football League, affectionately called SFL80 (Soccer for Life 80) is a groundbreaking football league for players aged 80 and above.

It’s not just a novelty, it’s a celebration of longevity, spirit, and the enduring love of the beautiful game.

Launched in April 2023, the SFL80 has drawn in around 40 players, split across three teams: Red Star, White Bear, and Blue Hawaii.

With an average age of 84, the league’s oldest player is the remarkable Shingo Shiozawa, a 93-year-old former race car designer who now serves as the goalkeeper for White Bear.

While the players may no longer have the explosive speed of their youth, their footwork, tactical awareness, and sheer determination remain intact.

Each match is kept short, just 15 minutes, with one half to respect the players’ physical limits. Substitutions are freely allowed, and special rules have been crafted to protect the well-being of the competitors.

Despite their age, the players compete on full-size fields, the same dimensions used in professional Japanese leagues.

The games are scheduled once a month from February to April, skipping the scorching summer months of July and August due to heat-related health risks.

The SFL80 is the latest chapter in a football movement that began in Tokyo over two decades ago, when leagues for players aged 60 and up began to form.

In 2012, the SFL70 was launched, followed by SFL75, giving rise to a full pyramid of senior leagues.

As of 2023, the numbers showed a thriving football culture among Tokyo’s aging population.

In 2023, the Tokyo Senior Football League featured 31 teams and 620 players in the 0-65 League, 18 teams and 449 players in the 0-70 League, 9 teams and 187 players in the 0-75 League, and 3 teams with 62 players in the newly introduced 0-80 League.

AGI’s Ralph Ayitey calls for revival of Akosombo textiles to restore Ghana’s industrial glory

0

Ralph Ayitey addressing the Parliamentary Select Committee on Trade, Industry and Toursim

The National Treasurer of the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI), Mr Ralph Ayitey, has called for urgent steps to revitalise the Akosombo Textiles Limited (ATL) located in Juapong of the Volta region, once a symbol of Ghana’s industrial strength and cultural identity.

He made the appeal during a meeting with the Parliamentary Select Committee on Trade, Industry and Tourism, where he underscored the need to restore ATL to its former prominence.

The committee sought to be apprised of the reasons why some service providers and manufacturers have not adjusted prices or charges downwards following the strengthening of the Cedi against major global currencies.

Mr Ayitey, who is also the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Coconut Groove Regency Hotel, bemoaned the current state of Ghana’s textile industry, lamenting that the country continues to rely heavily on imported textile products, despite possessing local capacity that remains grossly underutilized.

“I work in the hospitality space, as I mentioned, and I can tell you for a fact that about 75% of our input is imported from outside Ghana. Let us talk about towels, let us talk about bedsheets, where is Juapong Textiles? I know for the fact that the Minister is working very hard at it, but the speed at which we need to get Juapong working and as well as any potential ones, is very, very critical,” he said.

He stressed the need for policy direction and targeted investment to bring ATL back to full production. He further advocated for the establishment of a cotton processing factory to feed Akosombo Textiles with raw materials, noting that vertical integration would enhance sustainability and job creation.

“But who is going to feed Juapong? Ghana hasn’t gotten a cotton industry, Burkina Faso has a cotton industry, Benin, they’re stars, how come we cannot have a cotton industry that will be able to put Juapong in place?” he bemoaned.

Once a powerhouse of Ghana’s manufacturing sector, Akosombo Textiles was established in 1967 and gained renown for producing high-quality African prints that adorned citizens across the sub-region.

The company became synonymous with authentic Ghanaian identity, producing designs that reflected cultural heritage, political milestones, and social themes. At its peak, ATL employed thousands of workers and served as a cornerstone of industrialisation in the Volta Region.

However, over the years, the influx of cheap imports, policy inconsistencies, and infrastructural neglect gradually crippled operations.

Calls for its revival have grown louder, as stakeholders increasingly view its restoration as key to reviving Ghana’s textile industry and bolstering local manufacturing.

SML condemns OSP’s ‘unwarranted’ raid

0

Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Limited (SML) has strongly criticised a raid conducted by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), calling it “unwarranted and unjustified.”

The operation, which took place on Tuesday, June 10, saw OSP officials, accompanied by National Security operatives, storm SML’s offices in Osu and Tema without prior notice or the presentation of a warrant, according to the company.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, June 11, SML expressed concern that the raid jeopardises the integrity and continuity of a critical national revenue assurance system it operates in partnership with the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).

The company said that key assets were seized during the operation, including servers, proprietary documents, gold analysers, and other technical equipment — with many still under development and vital to their work with the GRA.

SML also reported that four of its employees were temporarily detained, while two others were assaulted during the raid.

“The unwarranted invasion and coordinated operations conducted on Tuesday, 10th June 2025, by
personnel from the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), supported by National Security operatives, at our divisional offices in Osu and Tema. The operation led to the removal of critical working equipment, significant damage to properties, the temporary detention of staff members and assaults on staff members.

“The forceful dismantling of the nation’s only independent, real-time petroleum monitoring system risks
eroding years of progress in revenue assurance. Without urgent corrective action, the sector is
again open to revenue loss,” the statement indicated.

SML indicated that it has, since March 2025, cooperated with the OSP regarding the probe.

“Since receiving an official request from the OSP on 13th March 2025, we have fully cooperated. We submitted all requested documentation within our contractual obligations on non-disclosure and confidentiality, on 27th March 2025 and have remained available to respond to further enquiries.

“In light of this cooperative record, we were surprised by the nature and execution of yesterday’s June 11 overwhelming forceful action, which occurred without prior notice, formal engagement, or presentation of a warrant,” the statement said.

SML has appealed to the GRA, the Ministry of Finance, and other state institutions to immediately intervene.

The company has called for a review of the actions taken and emphasised its commitment to transparency and national development.

Reduce airfares to reflect Cedi gains

0

Government wants domestic airline operators to consider reducing airfares following the recent appreciation of the Ghanaian Cedi against major international currencies.

According to the Transport Ministry, the strengthening of the local currency is easing foreign exchange-related operational costs for businesses, particularly in the aviation sector. Authorities believe it is time for consumers to benefit from the improved macroeconomic conditions.

Speaking at a high-level stakeholders’ breakfast meeting organised by the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority on Wednesday, June 11, 2025, Transport Minister Joseph Bukari Nikpe emphasised the importance of reflecting on the current economic gains in pricing.

“You are aware of the gains our Cedi has made. The Cedi has appreciated against all the major currencies as such we anticipate that it will trickle down to the service delivery in our country and the cost of doing business in our country.

“It is only my prayers that they will listen to the requests and also review downwards their fares. You heard them saying that they are working at it, considering other factors. We are very hopeful that very soon they would have ended their deliberations and would have seen some fare reductions,” he stated.

I have an ‘abnormal’ child with my younger brother and I want to get rid of him

0

File photo of a worried woman File photo of a worried woman

Dear GhanaWeb,

I’m a twenty-five-year-old woman who lives with her parents and a brother. My parents barely stay at home and give us attention. Eventually I grew fond of my brother.

I’m two years old than him, but he’s literally my best friend and who I confide in the most. He doesn’t have friends so he’s mostly in my room, having fun and other things.

As time went by, my brother and I got intimate and it ended in pregnancy. Honestly, we didn’t expect it to end the way it did, so I had to quickly terminate it.

Everything I did to terminate the pregnancy was futile. I took different medicines and bled a couple of times, but after about five months, I realised the pregnancy was still there.

It was too late to abort by then and I was falling sick in bits.

So, I had the baby, I didn’t have a choice. The child came out abnormal. His head is out of shape, his left leg is tinny while the other is growing fine.

He’s two years and can’t still walk.

I’m so sad. I cry everyday. My brother is living his life, takes no responsibility and pretends he doesn’t even know he’s the child’s father. Just because I can’t tell anyone the child is for my kid brother.

I want to get rid of him. Having him around is just pain. He is still a baby, no one loves him, I just keep hating him daily because he is abnormal and an incest child.

I’m always insulted by my parents for having a child like that and they don’t know my brother is even his father.

I know no one sent me to have an affair with my brother, but it has already happened.

I want really get rid of him. Will I be judged for doing that? What should I do now?

In a report by myjoyonline.com on June 11, 2025, the minister urged students to remain calm, focused, and determined as they prepare for their exams.

Iddrisu, also the Member of Parliament for Tamale South, emphasised that the BECE marks a significant milestone in the candidates’ academic journeys and encouraged them to perform to the best of their abilities.

In his message, Iddrisu wished the students success, courage, and wisdom as they tackle their examinations.

“On behalf of the President, the Ministry of Education, and the Government of Ghana, I want to extend warm wishes and heartfelt encouragement to all candidates. As they enter the exam hall, I urge them to remain calm, focused, and determined while avoiding any form of examination malpractice. Believe in your ability to succeed,” he said.

He expressed hope that the candidates would achieve their desired grades, assuring them of the ministry’s support and commitment to ensuring a smooth and successful examination experience.

“They have prepared for this day, and they will succeed through honest efforts. They should remember that this examination is just a test of memory; it does not reflect their growth, character, or potential—traits for which they have been trained,” he added.

The minister expressed confidence in the candidates’ abilities, stating that they should be well-prepared for the exams.

This year’s BECE began on Wednesday, June 11, 2025, and will conclude on Tuesday, June 17, 2025.

BoG cautions against unlicensed digital platforms, YellowPay and HanyPay

YellowPay deals in digital transactions YellowPay deals in digital transactions

The Bank of Ghana has warned against online digital platforms, YellowPay and HanyPay, describing them as unapproved and unlicensed for operations.

In a release on June 11, 2025, the Central Bank noted that YellowPay, an unapproved digital payment platform provided by Yellow Card Financial Inc, an entity not licensed by the bank, is actively promoting itself as a provider of digital payment services, cryptocurrency trading, and cross-border remittance solutions.

“The platform purports to enable users to make payments, send and receive electronic money and stable coins across borders, as well as convert stable coins into local currency; activities which require appropriate licensing from the Bank of Ghana,” it said.

The Central Bank also noted that YellowPay is engaged in an ongoing collaboration with HanyPay, an entity that claims to be licensed by the Africa Diaspora Central Bank (ADCB).

This partnership reportedly seeks to develop and integrate a new stablecoin, AKL Lumi, into the global financial ecosystem.

“This development raises significant regulatory concerns, as HanyPay is neither licensed nor authorised to operate within the jurisdiction of Ghana. In addition, the Bank of Ghana does not recognise ADCB as a central bank,” the BoG said.

The release signed by Sandra Thompson, BoG Secretary, noted that this notice serves to inform the public, financial institutions, and all relevant stakeholders to desist from engaging with Yellow Card Financial Inc and HanyPay Ghana, on the basis that their activities are not approved by the Bank of Ghana.

How Richard Ofori was ‘smuggled’ into Ghana’s AFCON 2023 squad to get him a new club – Felix Kyei reveals

0

Here, Richard Ofori touched the ball during a game, leading to a corner and ultimately a goal Here, Richard Ofori touched the ball during a game, leading to a corner and ultimately a goal

Medeama SC goalkeeper, Felix Kyei, has lifted the lid on the inclusion of Richard Ofori in Ghana’s squad for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast, suggesting the decision was driven more by sympathy than performance.

Ofori, who had played less than ten games at the time for his club, was a notable name on the 26-man list submitted by then-head coach, Chris Hughton.

The experienced goalkeeper had not enjoyed the best of form leading into the tournament, and his selection raised eyebrows, especially after Ghana crashed out in the group stage, following a series of costly errors by the shot-stopper.

In the must-win game against Mozambique, Ofori was in the spotlight for the wrong reasons.

A lapse in concentration led him to concede a needless corner, which ultimately resulted in a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser.

That goal eliminated the Black Stars from the tournament and sparked widespread criticisms from fans and pundits alike.

Now, Kyei, who was placed on the standby list for the tournament, has disclosed in an interview with Medeama FM that Ofori’s inclusion was less about merit and more about giving him a platform to relaunch his career.

“Chris Hughton told me if he has to drop any goalkeeper, it should be Richard Ofori, but because of his leadership roles and other stuff, he has to be included in the team. Again, I was told Ofori’s inclusion was to help him regain his confidence and also use the tournament as a springboard to get a new club,” he said.

Despite the disappointment of being left out, Kyei says he bore no resentment toward the coach or Ofori, choosing instead to take the decision in stride.

“It was Christmas, so Hughton wished me well, and I told him I have no qualms since he is the head coach and knows what’s best for the team. It’s normal; anything can happen during national team call-ups,” he concluded.

Dressed in a black spaghetti top and fitted jeans, she accessorized with a simple necklace and bracelets, sipping on a Kalypo as she waited for her frontal wig to set. Her laid-back charm and effortless style made this ordinary moment feel iconic.

Another clip shows her waiting in a VIP bus, vibing to highlife music in a sleeveless halter-neck dress. The outfit, paired with bold red nails, showcased her love for detail. She wore no heavy makeup, letting her natural beauty and warm personality take the spotlight. Her visible wrist tattoo added an extra touch of individuality.

In a third video, Philipa turns heads in a short strapless dress, revealing her well-toned legs and signature glow. She paired the look with soft makeup, fluttery lashes, and a stack of earrings. Her confidence in front of the camera was clear, embodying the poise and energy of a young woman coming into her own.

More than a Machine: How Gen Z confides in AI Chatbots

0

Was I the Problem?

That night, I didn’t cry, I typed.
And I didn’t message any other friend.
I messaged Artificial Intelligence (AI).

“Was I the problem?” That was the question I typed into an AI chatbox one night, my heart heavier than I wanted to admit.

My best friend, more like a sister, had started drifting away from me. We used to share everything: secrets, laughter, dreams. The kind of bond that didn’t need constant talking to feel real. But something shifted. She stopped returning my calls. My messages sat on “read.” When we did speak, her replies were dry, distant, like reading from a script.

I kept wondering what I had done wrong.
But I couldn’t bring myself to talk to anyone else. I didn’t want to seem clingy or dramatic. My mind was loud, and my heart was sore. So I did the unexpected, I turned to AI.

I typed:

“I think my best friend is ignoring me. I don’t know why. I feel really down. Was I the problem?”

It felt strange at first to talk to artificial intelligence about something so personal. But the response surprised me.

“Maybe it’s time to talk to her. Be honest. And if she still pulls away, remember that you deserve peace too. Life moves on, and so should you.”

That one paragraph didn’t solve everything. But it gave me clarity. It was a pause in the storm. And it made me realise something: I wasn’t completely alone.

Real Voices, Real Relief: How Gen Z Turns to AI for Comfort

For many Gen Z, AI has quietly become more than just a homework helper or productivity tool. It’s becoming a listener.

But first, let’s define what AI is and who Gen Z’s are;

AI refers to computer systems designed to perform tasks that typically require human intelligence. In this context, AI refers to conversational tools like ChatGPT, Replika, and Snapchat AI programmes designed to simulate human-like conversation and provide responses based on one’s input.

Gen Z includes people born roughly between the early 2000s and 2012. They are the first generation to grow up entirely in the digital age, raised on smartphones, social media, and instant information.

Known for being tech-savvy, socially aware, and mentally health-conscious, Gen Zers often navigate life through a screen. It’s no surprise they’re among the first to explore emotional support through AI.

Let’s continue.

In moments of anxiety, heartbreak, or confusion, especially when people feel alone or unheard, AI offers something unexpected: comfort. I spoke to some users to seek their views on the use of AI for emotional support.

One user told me;

“I felt I had no one to talk to. No listening ears. I opened up to AI, and it felt safe. It gave me a logical, kind response.”

Since then, they use it almost daily. Whether it’s about school stress, relationship drama, or personal growth, they feel understood.

Another person described using AI during a depressive episode:

“It encouraged me. Then it gently suggested seeing a real counselor. It didn’t judge. It just helped.”

They laughed as they recalled once asking AI for money, “and it actually pointed me to legit loan sites!”

Some say they trust AI more than people.

“At least AI doesn’t backbite,” one person said. “I don’t worry it’ll snitch.”

But not everyone feels the same.

“It helped, yeah. But I wouldn’t tell others to do it. It’s sort of madness, excuse me to say,” someone added with a smile.

Another says those who rely on AI are just lonely and fear judgment.

“Let’s be frank with ourselves, people who always resort to AI are all lonely people, they keep to themselves, because they fear to be judged, they are lonely and sometimes it’s pride”.

Is that really what it is?

Talking to AI First: How Gen Z Rehearses Emotions

Before facing real conversations, many Gen Zers are practising them with AI.

It might sound strange, but for some, typing out what they want to say, venting, questioning, or preparing for a hard conversation helps them sort through messy emotions.

I’ve done it too.

As an introvert, it’s not that I can’t talk to people, but rehearsing emotionally heavy conversations helps me stay grounded. AI became the space where I could test my thoughts without fear of how they’d land.

When I had to confront a friend about something hurtful, I first typed out the situation to an AI Chabot. It helped me find the right words. And when I finally had the conversation in real life, I was calmer and more confident.

For some, AI is just a thinking partner.
For others, it’s a mirror that listens and replies.

The AI Generation: When Gen Z Talks to Machines

With tools like ChatGPT, Snapchat AI, and Replika becoming part of our daily lives, Gen Z is building a new kind of relationship with artificial intelligence.

We’re the generation raised on Google, YouTube, and Instagram. But beyond school help or fun chats, AI is becoming something deeper: an emotional companion.

In a world where therapy is expensive, friendships are fragile, and social media feels fake, AI offers something real.

Not perfect advice. But a place.
No judgment. No pressure. Just room to breathe.

And for many of us, that’s enough.

From a psychological perspective, the growing emotional reliance on AI raises both curiosity and caution.

Therapists recognise that AI provides immediacy and non-judgment, especially at 2 a.m. when no one else is available. For many Gen Z, this accessibility makes AI feel more dependable than people.

But psychologists also ask; will this dependency create deeper isolation?

One thing is clear; AI is not replacing therapy, but for some, it’s a bridge. A moment of calm. A mental dress rehearsal. A way to feel heard without fear.

For me, it’s not an escape. It helps me face things more clearly.
It gives me space to feel heard. To think. To heal.

Maybe that’s what adaptation looks like.

We’re learning to survive in a world that doesn’t always pause for emotions.
And somehow, even in this strange new rhythm, we’re okay.

We’re not broken.
We’re just finding new ways to cope.

Alban Bagbin is the Speaker of Parliament play videoAlban Bagbin is the Speaker of Parliament

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has reminded Members of Parliament about the powers vested in the office of the Speaker and the need for strict adherence to parliamentary procedures and decorum.

Reacting to the chaos that erupted in the House on Tuesday, June 10, 2025, he stated, “I don’t need to talk to you about the powers of the Speaker. They are clearly stated in the law. If you read the Parliament Act 1965 and the orders of the House, they are actually colossal. And if fully applied, it could be of serious danger to the career progression of Members of Parliament.”

He pointed out the need for MPs to respect authority within the Chamber.

“Shakespeare taught all of us that even a dog is obeyed in office,” he remarked.

The Speaker further stated that those in leadership are not above reproach, and there is a constitutional process for challenging decisions.

“When we sit here, we are not saints. We are not infallible. But there’s good reason why we are called Right Honorable. And you are called only honorable,” he noted.

Bagbin emphasised that once the Speaker is presiding, his authority must be respected.

“The Speaker, however, the situation, is always right on the floor. When he’s wrong, the law has given you the opportunity as to how to come back to the same floor to prove that he was wrong, so please, I repeat, even a dog is obeyed in office,” he added.

His remarks follow chaotic scenes in Parliament on Tuesday, June 10, 2025.

The House was abruptly adjourned after a heated confrontation between the Minority and the Speaker’s chair over the refusal to allow a statement on the ongoing strike by the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA).

Tensions escalated when parliamentary marshals nearly removed the Ranking Member on the Health Committee, Dr Nana Ayew Afriye from the Chamber.

He was on his feet to demand that Parliament address the nationwide strike, which has severely impacted healthcare delivery in the country.

Ghana’s Bold Strides Against Illicit Trade: A Commendable Fight With More To Be Done

0

Illicit trade, characterised mainly by smuggling products into the country without paying the required duties, has long been a shadow activity of the economy that drains national revenue, fuels corruption, and undermines legitimate businesses. Ghana, under the leadership of President John Dramani Mahama, has embarked on a renewed fight against this menace, particularly targeting mining sector corruption and the illicit tobacco trade. While significant strides have been made, there remains a need for sustained efforts, strengthened enforcement, and international collaboration to secure lasting victories.

The recent seizure of GH¢20.6 million worth of illegal cigarettes and controlled pharmaceuticals in Tamale is a testament to Ghana’s commitment to tackling illicit trade. The Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) demonstrated swift action in intercepting the contraband, reinforcing the government’s resolve to protect public health and economic stability.

Similarly, the administration’s crackdown on illegal mining, or “galamsey,” is commendable. With over 670 km² of land devastated by unlawful mining activities, reforms such as the Environmental Protection Act (EPA) 2025 and the enhancement of the EPA’s enforcement capacity, are steps in the right direction. The focus on providing alternative livelihoods and implementing stricter penalties signals a proactive approach to dismantling illicit networks.

Regarding excisable products, initiatives like the destruction of seized goods, inter-agency collaborations between the Customs and other law enforcement agencies like the FDA, and the enforcement of tax stamps ensure that revenue losses are minimized while protecting consumers from unregulated products.

Despite these commendable efforts, Ghana must adopt a more aggressive and multi-dimensional approach to illicit trade. To fortify the fight, the country should enhance border security and surveillance, as porous borders remain a major enabler of smuggling.

Increased investment in customs training, technological surveillance and intelligence-sharing mechanisms with neighboring countries will help curb illicit cross-border activities. Punitive measures such as arrest of key actors, fines and penalties, withdrawal of business licenses have also proven to be very effective in the fight against illicit trade.

Strengthening political will and leadership within regulatory bodies is also crucial, as enforcement remains a challenge when oversight agencies lack the necessary resources or leadership (tone from the top). Implementing a zero-tolerance policy for corruption within regulatory agencies and appointing competent, reform-driven officials will ensure continuity in the fight against illicit trade.

Additionally, expanding funding for environmental reclamation and alternative livelihoods is essential, particularly in tackling illegal mining. Securing partnerships with international environmental agencies and donor organisations can help Ghana fund large-scale land restoration programs. Public awareness and consumer engagement should also be prioritised, as educating the public on the dangers of illicit trade particularly in tobacco and pharmaceuticals—will strengthen consumer resistance to illicit products.

Nationwide campaigns and the involvement of civil society organisations can amplify these efforts. Lastly, fostering regional and international collaboration is necessary, as illicit trade is a transnational problem. Strengthening partnerships with ECOWAS, the African Union, and international law enforcement agencies will improve intelligence-sharing and border control measures.

President Mahama’s government has demonstrated commendable leadership in tackling illicit trade. However, the fight is far from over.

The Customs Division headed by its commissioner must intensify its border security operations, deploying both human and technological resources to track and intercept illicit goods before they enter the market. In addition to physical enforcement, the use of data analytics and surveillance technology can play a pivotal role in detecting and preventing cross-border illegal activities. The government must also ensure that these measures are backed by sufficient funding and personnel to ensure their effectiveness.

Fighting illicit trade is a shared responsibility. The government must sustain and strengthen enforcement efforts. Traders must stop selling illicit products, and consumers must reject and stop demanding them. Community vigilance and public awareness are key. A well-informed and empowered citizenry becomes a vital force in dismantling illicit networks.

Furthermore, in the fight against illicit trade, the government must encourage whistleblowing. Citizens and industry insiders who report suspicious activities should be provided with a safe, protected, and rewarding framework to do so. This can empower the public to act as an extension of the enforcement arm, providing valuable intelligence that will help uncover and dismantle illicit trade networks.

With stronger enforcement, enhanced political will, collaborative efforts, and effective prosecution and punitive measures, Ghana can emerge as a model for combating illicit trade in Africa. The momentum must not wane, a 360 multifaceted approach is needed —there is still much to be done, and now is the time to act decisively.

Boyfriend allegedly shoots lover dead at Yeji

A 20-year-old woman, Philipa Frimpong, popularly known as Yaa Baby, has been shot dead by her boyfriend at Vutedeke, a suburb of Yeji in the Pru East District of the Bono East Region.

According to reports, the tragic incident occurred in the late afternoon of Tuesday, June 10.

The suspect, identified as popular TikToker Hayford Boateng, also known as Kobby GH, has been arrested in connection with the shooting.

Yaa Baby sustained a gunshot wound to her left arm and was rushed to St. Martin’s Hospital in Yeji, where she was pronounced dead.

It remains unclear what led to the shooting that claimed her life.

Two of Hayford’s friends—28-year-old Kojo Emmanuel and 34-year-old Michael Kabutey—who were reportedly present at the scene, have also been taken into custody and are assisting police with investigations.

Government called upon to partner private sector in implementation of 24-Hour Economy policy

The Eastern Regional Manager, Ghana National Chamber of Commerce and Industry, is appealing to the government to partner the private sector in the successful implementation of the 24-Hour Economy policy as part of efforts to address the unemployment situation among the country’s youth.

Justice Kwabena Wilson is making a fervent call to the government to collaborate with the private sector in implementing its 24-Hour Economy initiative, with the goal of fostering economic growth and job creation, especially for the youth.

The 24-Hour Economy aims to stimulate economic activity beyond traditional daytime hours, potentially leading to increased employment, particularly for young people. However, the success of such an initiative hinge on the private sector’s ability to innovate, invest, and operate businesses on a continuous basis.

Justice Kwabena Wilson, who believes government support can provide the necessary framework, infrastructure, and incentives for private sector participation, explained that the Chamber wants the government to be aware of such projects to encourage it to come in and support them to complete and start operation under the 24-Hour Economy policy.

The manager, citing a privately-owned roofing sheet manufacturing and installation company at Asuoyaa in the Eastern Region to buttress his point, said the project which is 90% complete has an estimated production capacity of 10,000 metric tons per annum.

The manager speaking in an interview with the press at Asuoyaa near Koforidua in the Eastern Region, said a strong foundation had already been built on which to establish government’s flagship program, emphasising that such collaboration would go a long way to complement efforts at solving the unemployment canker in the country and particularly in the Eastern region due to the absence of industries in the region.

“With projects like these, there’s already significant grounds on which to establish the 24-Hour Economy policy, so the government should take advantage of this by supporting this kind of development to be operational,” said the manager.

According to him, President Mahama, who is limited to just his 4-year second term must take advantage of these already existing projects rather than beginning new projects from the scratch.

Stressing on the project’s promising job opportunities, Wilson said, “We’re all aware of the absence of industries in the region, which accounts for the high rate of unemployment. I’m confident that completing this project would help reduce the unemployment rate in the region.”

Aside from its productivity, the company is also intended to create employment opportunities in the area and train the youth, women, and physically challenged persons in roofing and roofing related skills and expertise.

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has cautioned the public against engaging with two digital financial service providers — YellowPay and HanyPay — for operating without the necessary licenses and regulatory approvals in Ghana.

In a public notice dated June 10, 2025, the central bank flagged YellowPay, a product of Yellow Card Financial Inc., for promoting itself as a provider of digital payment services, cryptocurrency trading, and cross-border remittance solutions, despite lacking authorization to operate in Ghana.

According to the BoG, YellowPay enables users to send and receive electronic money and stablecoins, convert them into local currency, and make payments across borders—functions that fall under the Bank’s regulatory mandate and therefore require licensing. The institution clarified that Yellow Card Financial Inc. is not licensed by the Bank of Ghana to conduct any such activities within the country.

Compounding the regulatory concern is YellowPay’s reported collaboration with HanyPay, a platform claiming to be licensed by the so-called Africa Diaspora Central Bank (ADCB). The partnership reportedly involves the development of a new stablecoin, AKL Lumi, for use in global digital finance.

However, the Bank of Ghana made it clear that it does not recognize the Africa Diaspora Central Bank as a legitimate central bank, and that HanyPay is neither licensed nor authorized to operate in Ghana.

“This development raises significant regulatory concerns,” the statement read, stressing that HanyPay’s operations are not sanctioned under Ghanaian law.

The BoG has therefore directed financial institutions, the general public, and stakeholders to refrain from doing business with Yellow Card Financial Inc. and HanyPay Ghana.

The warning underscores the Bank’s commitment to protecting Ghana’s financial system from unregulated digital operations and potential risks associated with cryptocurrency activities conducted outside established legal frameworks.

‘GH Kobby lured my Yaa Baby to Mamponghene’s funeral just to kill her’

The family of late Ghanaian socialite, Philipha Frimpong, popularly known as Yaa Baby, has expressed dissatisfaction with TikToker, GH Kobby, after it was reported in the news that their daughter has been shot dead.

It may be recalled that GhanaWeb, in its earlier news, reported the shooting incident that occurred at Yeji, where three individuals: GH Kobby, Kwadwo Emmanuel (Ashawo), and Michael Kabutey, were seen having a meal with the victim before the tragic event unfolded.

Unclear what led to the shooting, eyewitnesses alleged that all they saw was that Kobby retrieved a gun from his vehicle, aimed at Yaa Baby, and fatally shot her.

In a recent development, the grandmother of Yaa Baby has accused GH Kobby of luring her granddaughter to the funeral ceremony of the late Mamponghene just to kill her.

According to Adwoa Sarfowaa, her late granddaughter was a good girl who always stays away from trouble.

“Philipha is a good girl… When she finished SHS, I was with her always… Per my knowledge, the boy lured my daughter to Mamponghene’s funeral and also dragged her to Yeji to kill her,” she said.

Yaa Baby’s grandmother further noted that she had not set eyes on GH Kobby before.

According to her, she only got to know him after news broke out that her granddaughter had been murdered.

“I have not set eyes on him before. If not for the news where people showed his pictures with me on the phone, I wouldn’t have seen him. She never complained to me that a man has beaten or maltreated her before,” she added.

Meanwhile, all three individuals are currently in police custody, assisting with investigations.

Patients stranded as healthcare delivery in public hospitals ‘crumble’

0

Healthcare delivery at public hospitals in the country continues to suffer as the nationwide strike by the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) enters its second week, leaving patients stranded and critical services disrupted.

A visit by a GhanaWeb reporter to the LEKMA Hospital and the Maamobi General Hospital on Tuesday, June 11, 2025, in Accra revealed the extent of the impact.

Only a skeletal staff remained at post, to attend to emergency cases and pregnant women reporting for antenatal care.

The typically busy wards at the health facilities appeared abandoned, with nurses’ stations empty and corridors unusually quiet.

At the LEKMA Hospital, doctors were seen stepping in to assist patients where possible.

The situation was no different at the Maamobi General Hospital, where the Outpatient Department (OPD) and nurses’ stations were completely abandoned, leaving patients unattended to and waiting in frustration.

“My daughter delivered a few days ago. We were asked to come today to see a doctor for post-natal review. The nurses are not around, but the doctors are at post with a skeletal staff. I want to plead with the striking nurses and midwives to resume duty. One lady in my hometown has lost her life due to the ongoing strike action,” a mother of a patient narrated.

The ongoing strike, initiated by GRNMA, stems from grievances over delayed fulfilment of their conditions of service negotiations and the government’s failure to address key welfare concerns raised by the Association.

It has accused the Ministry of Health and the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) of failing to honour promises made to them, including allowances, accommodation issues and workload.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health has appealed to the striking nurses and midwives to return to work while negotiations continue.

Dr Nii Moi Thompson urges productivity revolution in Africa amid global trade shifts

Dr Nii Moi Thompson is Chairman of the NDPC and Special Advisor to the President Dr Nii Moi Thompson is Chairman of the NDPC and Special Advisor to the President

The Chairman of the National Development Planning Commission (NDPC) and Special Advisor to the President on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Dr Nii Moi Thompson, has called for a productivity revolution in Africa to help the continent adapt to changing global trade dynamics.

Speaking at the second Hamburg Sustainability Conference (June 2–4, 2025), where he represented President John Dramani Mahama, Dr Thompson noted that recent trade policies, such as the US imposition of a 10% tariff on African imports, have created economic challenges similar to those seen during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Before the new US tariffs, African nations applied an average tariff of 6% on American goods, while the US charged only 0.4% on African exports.

With the new 10% US tariff, Dr Thompson warned that Africa risks losing ground in trade unless it boosts productivity.

“Africa already needed higher productivity to compete with cheap imports and in global markets. Now, with these tariffs, the need is even greater,” he said.

He added that improving labour productivity is key to narrowing income gaps between African workers and those in wealthier nations.

The Pan-African Productivity Association (PAPA), he said, will play a role in this effort.

The Hamburg Sustainability Conference gathered leaders to discuss sustainable development, with Africa’s economic resilience among the key topics.

Supreme Court quashes contempt conviction against Akwatia MP

By Joyce Danso

Accra, June 11, GNA – The Supreme Court has overturned a contempt conviction handed down by the Koforidua High Court against Mr. Ernest Kumi, Member of Parliament (MP) for Akwatia.

In a 4-1 majority decision, the apex court also restrained the trial judge from sentencing the MP and nullified the bench warrant issued against him.

The five-member panel, presided over by Justice Gabriel Pwamang, indicated that the reasons for its ruling would be delivered on July 7, 2025.

Justice Pwamang dissented, while the majority decision was delivered by Justices Henry Kwofie, Professor Henrietta Mensah Bonsu, Ernest Gaewu and Adjei Frimpong.

Mr. Kumi had filed an application for certiorari and an order of prohibition at the Supreme Court, seeking to quash the February 2025 contempt conviction by the Koforidua High Court.

The High Court had earlier issued a bench warrant against him, despite an outstanding injunction application against his swearing-in as MP.

The MP, through his lawyers, argued that the High Court judge acted with bias and violated the rules of natural justice by proceeding to hear the contempt application while a motion to set it aside was pending.

He sought the Supreme Court’s intervention to nullify the High Court’s ruling and halt enforcement of the bench warrant.

Ernest Kumi free to serve as MP

0

Kwame Owiredu, Lawyer for Ernest Kumi, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Akwatia has expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the Supreme Court ruling, describing it as a vindication of their client’s rights.

On Wednesday, June 11, the apex court quashed a ruling by the High Court in Koforidua, which had held Kumi in contempt and was set to sentence him. The Supreme Court also barred Justice Emmanuel Senyo Amedahe from proceeding with sentencing.

The ruling follows a judicial review application filed by Mr. Kumi, led by his legal counsel Gary Nimako-Marfo, who also serves as the NPP’s Director of Legal Affairs. The legal team argued that the High Court lacked the jurisdiction to hear the election petition that resulted in an injunction against the MP and the subsequent contempt proceedings.

Speaking to the media after the ruling, Kwame Owiredu said, “As we speak now, Hon. Ernest Kumi remains the elected and valid MP for Akwatia. Hon. Ernest Yaw Kumi is as free as a bird. He’s a free man, and he will continue his good works as an MP for the good people of Akwatia.”

Despite the Supreme Court’s decision, Bernard Bediako Baidoo, lawyer for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate in Akwatia, maintained that the ongoing election petition at the High Court remains unaffected.

“The petition stands. The matter would be on unabted, it’s a valid petition, and we will pursue it. We await the analysis the Supreme Court will make, and we take it from there,” he said.

In this case, while the petition was filed on December 31, 2024, Nimako-Marfo said the results were not gazetted until June 6, 2025—well beyond the statutory timeframe.

He argued that because the court’s jurisdiction was improperly invoked, all subsequent rulings, including the injunction and contempt conviction, were invalid.

He also criticised the High Court for convicting Mr. Kumi of contempt without granting him a hearing, calling it a breach of natural justice.

However, counsel for the NDC parliamentary candidate, Henry Boakye Yiadom, opposed the claims, insisting the High Court acted within its legal mandate and that both the injunction and the contempt ruling were valid.

Mahama alone can reset Ghana

0

Renowned economist Kwame Pianim has commended President John Dramani Mahama for what he described as exceptional and responsive leadership, declaring the President as the only Ghanaian capable of “resetting Ghana” in these challenging times.

Pianim made the remarks during a courtesy call by the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) on President Mahama at the Jubilee House in Accra on Wednesday, June 11.

He highlighted the President’s willingness to listen and act on the concerns of teachers, stressing that such responsiveness sets him apart.

“Here we tend to underpay our teachers but with you as a listening president, I was happy when they were coming; they said let’s go and talk to the president — I said with this president if he tells you he is going to do something, he will do it,” Pianim stated.

Drawing a contrast, he recalled a broken promise by another leader who pledged to deliver 10,000 housing units to teachers—a commitment that, according to him, yielded nothing.

“Someone told them he was going to give them 10,000 houses, they got zero. I told them this is a listening president,” he added.

Pianim called on all Ghanaians, regardless of political affiliation, to unite behind President Mahama’s leadership.

He further urged President Mahama to rise above partisan considerations and focus on national interest.

“You are the right person, you don’t need the voters, you don’t need the party, do the best for Ghana and leave a legacy,” Pianim said.

Tottenham Snatch Thomas Frank From Brentford For £10m

0

Thomas Frank

Tottenham Hotspur have reached an agreement to appoint Thomas Frank as their new head coach, with a compensation fee of around £10 million set to be paid to Brentford.

Spurs are expected to formally announce the Danish manager’s arrival in the coming days.

Frank will replace Ange Postecoglou, who was dismissed last week despite guiding the club to a historic Europa League triumph. Spurs’ domestic form collapsed during the 2024/25 season, culminating in a 17th-place Premier League finish and 22 defeats in 38 matches.

Postecoglou’s exit was widely expected, with reports emerging even before the European final that the Australian would leave regardless of the result. Injuries were a factor in Spurs’ poor league campaign, but performances failed to convince.

Tottenham had also considered Oliver Glasner, Andoni Iraola and Marco Silva for the vacancy, but Frank quickly emerged as the preferred candidate. Talks progressed swiftly once Spurs committed to activating his release clause.

Frank, 51, has been Brentford’s manager since 2018 and has steadily built his reputation as one of the league’s most adaptable tacticians. He is currently the second-longest serving manager in the Premier League behind Pep Guardiola.

Though he has no professional playing background, Frank’s coaching record is impressive. He has overseen 152 Premier League games, collecting 200 points with a win rate of 35%. Brentford finished the season in 10th place, 18 points clear of Spurs, scoring more and conceding fewer goals.

Frank becomes Tottenham’s fourth permanent manager since 2021. The pressure will be immediate, but he inherits a squad that, despite their league standing, recently ended a 17-year wait for silverware.

BOMB – NPP bigwigs ‘fingered’ for allegedly siphoning millions from Exim Bank

0

The information gathered suggests some politically connected individuals to the erstwhile Akufo-Addo administration have been exposed for allegedly siphoning millions from Exim Bank loans.

According to the report, the siphoning scheme happened under then-CEO, Lawrence Agyinsam under the guise of promoting agriculture.

The shocking revelation suggests Exim Bank which was meant to support Ghana’s export-driven businesses was a cash cow for these individuals within the former Akufo-Addo government.

KMA impounds 22 vehicles, fines drivers for charging unapproved fares

0

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) is taking firm action against commercial drivers who go against its directive to charge unapproved transport fares.

In a special exercise conducted by the assembly’s Transport Task Force, 22 drivers were arrested for overcharging passengers, and their vehicles were impounded at the KMA premises, pending further legal action.

Head of Urban Transport at KMA, Randy Wilson, indicated the offenders will be fined between GH¢500 and GH¢1,500 before their vehicles are released, in line with the Assembly’s Special Exercise Fine approved on July 28, 2023.

The task force comprised personnel from the Department of Transport, KMA Metro Guards, Assembly Members, and other security operatives.

According to the assembly, the team acted upon evidence that these drivers were flouting the 15% reduction in transport fares, which took effect on May 24, 2025, as directed by national transport unions.

On May 26, 2025, the assembly issued a public notice cautioning all commercial drivers to strictly comply with the revised fares.

The notice warned drivers against charging unapproved fares, as the assembly noted it is a criminal offense punishable by law.

Mr. Wilson reaffirmed KMA’s commitment to maintaining discipline and fairness within the city’s transport system.

He emphasized that the Assembly will continue to enforce its regulations without fear or favor to protect the interests of the commuting public.

“KMA remains committed to promoting order, accountability, and sanity on Kumasi’s roads,” Mr. Wilson noted.

‘I will go for Grammy, BET awards soon’ – Empress Gifty claps back at Agradaa

Gospel musician, Empress Gifty Gospel musician, Empress Gifty

It appears the ongoing feud between gospel musician Empress Gifty and Nana Agradaa shows no signs of ending.

For weeks, the two have been engaged in a heated dispute, which escalated after Empress Gifty filed a GH¢20 million defamation lawsuit against Agradaa for spewing derogatory comments about her and her husband.

In the wake of the lawsuit, Agradaa took to social media to criticise Empress Gifty, stating that even a Rolex watch is more valuable than her TGMAs plaque.

In response, Empress Gifty posted a video expressing her ambitions to win Grammy and BET awards.

She also mentioned that she would appeal to the spirit of her late mother, Agaga, for protection.

“I will visit Agaga and I will present the plaques to her so that she can also protect me from any evil plot against me. I won this award by merit.

“Very soon I will go to BET and Grammys,” she said.

Meanwhile, both parties appeared before the Tema High Court for the second time on June 11, 2025, as the case continues.

Adu-Boahene failed to declare his assets – Deputy AG tells court

The Deputy Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dr Justice Srem Sai, has reportedly said that embattled former Director-General of the National Signals Bureau (NSB), Kwabena Adu Boahene, who is currently being prosecuted for alleged misappropriation of state funds, did not declare his assets.

Dr Srem Sai, according to GHOne TV, made this disclosure during court proceedings on Wednesday, June 11, 2025.

He reportedly told the court that the former NSB boss did not declare his assets as required by law.

Article 286 of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana mandates public officeholders to complete and submit Assets Declaration forms to the Auditor-General’s office upon resumption of office.

“(1) A person who holds a public office mentioned in clause (5) of this article shall submit to the Auditor-General a written declaration of all property or assets owned by, or liabilities owed by, him whether directly or indirectly – (a) within three months after the coming into force of this Constitution or before taking office, as the case may be, (b) at the end of every four years; and (c) at the end of his term of office.

“(2) Failure to declare or knowingly making false declaration shall be a contravention of this Constitution and shall be dealt with in accordance with Article 287 of this Constitution,” part of the article reads.

Section 3 of the article further states, “The declaration made under clause (1) of this article shall, on demand, be produced in evidence – (a) before a court of competent jurisdiction; or (b) before a commission of inquiry appointed under Article 278 of this Constitution; or (c) before an investigator appointed by the Commissioner for Human Rights and Administrative Justice.”

Article 287 mandates the Commissioner for Human Rights and Administrative Justice to take actions it deems appropriate against public officers who fail to declare their assets.

Meanwhile, investigations by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) and the Attorney General’s office have uncovered a number of properties allegedly acquired with embezzled state funds by Adu-Boahene and his wife.

Below is a breakdown of the properties and their estimated values under the couple’s names:

Mikel Obi questions Chelsea for snubbing Victor Osimhen to sign Liam Delap

Mikel Obi (R) wants Osimhen (L) to move to Chelsea Mikel Obi (R) wants Osimhen (L) to move to Chelsea

Former Nigerian midfielder Mikel Obi has chastised Chelsea Football Club for their lack of seriousness in signing his compatriot Victor Osimhen, instead opting to sign Liam Delap.

According to him, Delap is a good striker who proved his worth at Ipswich Town during the 2024/25 season, but his ability to thrive in a top club cannot be guaranteed.

“I just hope that it’s going to be the right decision. I like Liam Delap. He’s a good young striker who works his socks off. Is he a proven goalscorer in the Premier League? Can he do it at a big club like Chelsea? That’s the question. It’s about how the manager works with him and develops him,” he questioned, as reported by the Standard.

The former Chelsea midfielder asserted that Galatasaray striker Osimhen would be a better player to solve the club’s goal-scoring crisis.

Obi stated that Osimhen is a proven striker who can score numerous goals for the Blues to win titles in a season, as compared to an upcoming player.

“With Victor Osimhen, if you want the finished article, if you want someone who can come in straight away, get you goals, win you trophies, put you in the top four, you have to pay the big bucks. That’s what the big clubs do.

“If you want somebody to evolve over the next two, three, four years, which is what the club has done, then that also makes sense. But Chelsea Football Club’s culture is winning, straight away. If you want to win, you have to bring in a Victor Osimhen,” he said.

Chelsea signed the 22-year-old for 30 million euros from Ipswich on a six-year deal.

Chelsea’s move for Osimhen is reported to have stalled following the player’s high wage demands.
